POLL Attack on Schmack crosses line YESTERDAY’S RESULTS EDITOR’S NOTE Eric Olson Kevin O. Johnson shouldn’t be so quick to call someone else sleazy.

Johnson, a Sycamore attorney, has history with DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack. So on Sunday, Johnson was at the end of the Sycamore Pumpkin Parade, yelling about free speech and pushing a wheeled cart emblazoned with signs ripping Schmack as a “sleazy Chicago-style politician” who abuses his power.

Johnson is angry with Schmack because until May, Johnson faced felony theft charges.

The state alleged he had failed to invest money withheld from a former employee’s paycheck in a 401(k) account. Johnson argued it was a mistake, not a crime, and that the state inflated he amount of money he withheld in order to hit him with more serious charges.

Johnson’s license to practice law was suspended for 18 months for improper fee collections by the Attorney Registration and Discipline Commission, a suspension that ended in August 2015, records show. Schmack has said he filed the complaint that led to the suspension. The criminal case against him was dismissed because the state failed to meet his demands for a speedy trial.

During those court proceedings, Johnson included a photo of a former employee’s bare breasts in the court file, which is open to public inspection, noting that the “trial version is expected to be in color.” He said at the time that “I want to cost Richard Schmack the election.”

This newspaper has criticized Schmack at times. But I have also interacted with him professionally, and seen and spoken to him while he volunteered at various community events, including the Royal Children’s Ball, which benefits the DeKalb County Youth Service Bureau.

Many people plan to vote for his opponent, Richard Amato, in next week’s election. They are angry and disappointed with decisions Schmack has made, including in the series of events that led to the setting aside of Jack McCullough’s conviction in Maria Ridulph’s homicide. That is fair.

But it’s not fair to call Schmack a sleazy bum, as Johnson did. He is not.

I was surprised Johnson’s float was even allowed in the parade.

Turns out, it wasn’t – not exactly.

Jerome Perez, who handles publicity for the all-volunteer Pumpkin Festival Committee, said Johnson had applied to walk in the parade as an independent, get-out-the-vote entry.

“When we actually saw what he brought, we had asked him not to participate, but he wanted to still walk through with it,” Perez said. “What we did is, we stuck him behind the parade banner.”

In other words, they didn’t include him in the official parade lineup, but they didn’t stop him from walking down a public street after the last official parade entry.

There has been a lot of vitriol this campaign season, a tone set by the presidential candidates. The rules for parade entries don’t address political floats, but that might change after this year, Perez said.

“We talked at the end of the parade, that we probably need to tighten our rules as far as what’s acceptable as a political entry,” he said. “We had some entries that were by nonpoliticians supporting Trump and some other things.

“We don’t really want to prohibit politicians on election years from participating, but we need to rein it in as far as what’s allowable.”

Inflammatory floats such as Johnson’s oneman attack ad are out-of-bounds and alienate people. The festival committee should make that clear for future parades.

Democrats want to maintain majority; GOP looks to take it back

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Even with only three contested DeKalb County Board races, the local Democrats’ majority is at stake in this month’s election.

Democrats hold a 13-11 majority on the board, and Paul Stoddard, chairman of the DeKalb County Democrats, said he’s optimistic his party will retain it.

Stoddard said that although much of the national focus has been on the presidential race between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, local races tend have a much greater effect on the lives of local people.

“Taxes, services, roads – all of that is based on who we elect to the County Board,” he said. “The further down the ballot you go, those are really the ones that affect us on a personal level.”

Republicans are looking to retake control, said Steve Kuhn, chairman of the DeKalb County Republicans.

“I think we have a good chance of taking the majority,” he said. “It would be good to get the majority back, but it’s going to be close.”

The DeKalb County Board has 24 members, with two from each district. Every two years, half of the board is up for re-election. However, 11 of the 14 races are uncontested this time.

Two of the three contested races are in District 4, which includes part of the city of Sycamore. Republican Laurie Emmer will face Democrat Virginia Sherrod for a four-year term. That seat has been held by Anita Jo Turner, a Democrat who is retiring from the board.

Sherrod, a retired classroom assistant and mother of seven, sees keeping the county’s budget in check as part of the “hard work of governing.”

“The county’s priorities remain efficiently providing all those services needed by the residents of DeKalb County,” she said. “That is the hard work of governing, balancing budgets while still providing

Emmer, who retired from the U.S. Army, said the county needs to steer clear of relying on reserves and property tax increases to balance the budget.

“First, we must not use the reserves since, essentially, this is not a balanced budget when taking out of the reserves,” she said. “The county needs to look at the budget as a whole and at every entity to determine if everything that can be cut has been cut.

It is difficult to lay off people. ... We must not raise taxes to balance a budget. DeKalb County’s property taxes are high enough. Until we find revenue sources, such as growth of business for example, this means painful cuts. ... I truly hope this year will be the end of painful cuts, of sacrificing jobs, but we can no longer continue with an unbalanced budget.”

In the same district, Republican Demetri Broches faces Democrat Steve Faivre to finish a two-year, unexpired term. Faivre was appointed to fill Joseph Bassett’s unexpired term when Bassett resigned.

Faivre, who is self-employed and a married father of two, said safety should come first when it comes to making decisions about the budget.

“The safety of our communi-

ty needs to be our top priority,” he said. “This includes more than law enforcement. Being prepared for weather [e.g. Fairdale], health crisis and active shooter disasters is also critical. Closely tied to safety is infrastructure – maintaining the county’s roads and bridges. ... It is important to analyze the impact of reducing staff and resources in light of meeting theses priorities, not just for the current budget year, but also with an eye on several years [and in some cases, decades] going forward.”

Broches wants to see economic development to keep the county’s budget balanced.

“DeKalb County is one of the few counties in Illinois that is still in the black, but it won’t last long if we continue each year going through our reserves,” he said. “Until we take steps to make our county more business friendly by reducing regulations and taxes, the county will continue to slowly shrink in population and jobs [will] move elsewhere, and the accompanying revenue [will] fall.

“With weak economic growth, we’ll need to continue being mindful of our expenses each year during budget time until the economic climate changes. The current priority remains in trying to keep as many county staff as possible, and allowing more revenue into our county by in-

viting more families and businesses to settle here.”

Republican Jonathan Schmarje faces Democrat John J. Wett for a seat in District 2, which includes Genoa and Kingston. Both recently answered questions at a forum held by the League of Women Voters.

Schmarje, a Navy veteran who is a stay-at-home dad, said lowering the cost of government would help ease the property tax burden.

“Property taxes are incredible. I pay the same amount in taxes [each month] as I do for the mortgage on my house,” he said. “I think now is a great time to continue to look at all of the different areas in the county through the budget, make sure we can go through and eliminate excess spending.”

Wett, a marriage and family therapist, said he has a plan to reduce spending in the sheriff’s office, which is the single largest line item in the county’s budget.

“Part of my plan is to reduce the recidivism in the jail,” he said. “If we reduce recidivism in the jail, we are cutting tax dollars spent on the jail.

From my calculations, with implementing mental health [care] in the jail, we could save about $2 [million] to $3 million per year. With that, we could freeze property taxes where they are, if not try to reduce them.”

Sycamore house fire victim identified

SYCAMORE – Authorities on Monday identified the man who died in Sunday’s early morning house fire as Jeffery M. Conery, 47, of Sycamore.

DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller said preliminary results of an autopsy performed Monday indicated the cause of death was a combination of smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Miller said no signs of foul play were found.

Firefighters were called at 4:43 a.m. Sunday to the house at 1847 Somonauk St. When they arrived, they found part of the house in flames.

Sycamore Fire Chief Pete Polarek said Monday that the cause of the fire and where it started in the home were still under investigation with help from the State Fire Marshal Office. The home did have working smoke detectors, according to a news release from the Sycamore Fire Department.

“The prominent damage was on the north end of the structure by the front entryway and the single-car garage,” Polarek said. “There was also smoke and heat damage throughout

Polarek said he believed two family pets, a cat and a dog, died in the fire as well.

The home belonged to Conery’s exwife, Kimberly A. Conery, according to county tax records.

Sycamore police Cmdr. Mike Anderson said Conery was allowed to stay at the house during the time of the fire, but he did not know the circumstances of their relationship.

Anderson said police are assisting the coroner, fire department and state fire marshal in an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

Authorities are trying not to jump to conclusions because a person was killed in the incident and because they do not have evidence to show what the circumstances were at the time of the fire, Polarek said.

WARD D. ANDERSON Born: January 15, 1941 Died: October 21, 2016

Ward D. Anderson, 75, of DeKalb died Friday, October 21, 2016 at his home. He was born in Sycamore, IL on January 15, 1941 and was the son of Arthur and Ona (Gunn) Anderson.

Ward graduated from Sycamore High School in 1959 and married Jane F. Marcheschi on January 9, 1965 at St. Mary Catholic Church in DeKalb. He was the owner and operator of Anderson Auto Sales. Ward loved building and restoring antique cars and loved going to different swap meets. He was an all-around gear head.

Survivors include wife of 51 years, Jane; son, Sam Anderson of DeKalb; and daughter, Natalie (fiancée Drew Major) Gunn of Baton Rouge, LA; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family would like to thank Kish Health Systems Hospice and Pam and Dennis Breese for all their help and kindness during these last few weeks.

Ladd’s academic involvement began at the University of Connecticut followed by professorships at Indiana, Thammasat (Bangkok), and Rutgers universities. In 1963 he joined the Department of Political Science at Northern Illinois University, lured by the promise that he could build a Center for Southeast Asian Studies. Ladd spent more than forty years at NIU as a scholar, teacher and as chair of the Political Science Department and founding Coordinator of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies. During this time he also began establishing NIU affiliations with universities in Thailand including Chiang Mai, Thammasat, and Prince of Songhkla in Pattani. In addition he maintained his publication record writing books, dozens of articles and book chapters, and countless papers at professional meetings. His output focused on public administration, security issues in the southern provinces of Thailand and the Philippines, development and social justice, and politics in Southeast Asia. His most pioneering work concerned Muslims in southern Thailand. His work brought fame and great distinction to Northern Illinois University among scholars throughout the world.

Most importantly, Ladd served as mentor for numerous graduate students who later became leading district, provincial, and national officials, respected academics, and business executives in various Southeast Asian nations. In the United States his students became academics and government officials.

A great moment in Ladd’s career came in the mid-1980s when he received the Crown of Thailand award from the Thai King. The speech in his honor by the Thai Prime Minister stressed Ladd’s involvement in founding the National Institute for Development Administration (NIDA), his restructuring of the National Research Council, his scholarly articles, and his advisory contributions to the Thai government.

Of all his achievements, quite possibly his greatest was that of conversation laced with intellect and humor. He was a story teller that captured everyone’s interest. Ladd will be remembered fondly, and missed by many throughout the United States as well as Southeast Asia.

Ladd is survived by his two sisters, Dianne Thomas and Vickie McConkey; his four nephews, Thomas McConkey, James McConkey and his wife, Theresa, Mark McConkey and his wife, Melanie, and John McConkey and his wife, Paula; and one niece, Saundra Cavaleri.

He is also survived by several great and great, great nieces and nephews, as well as many other relatives and friends.

Ladd is preceded in death by his parents, Albert Melvin Thomas and Fern Ludlow Thomas.

Eloise was married to the late Professor John J. Twombly in the St. Mary Rectory on June 5, 1943. Her husband preceded her in death on October 8, 1990. Eloise was a retired LPN, having worked many years at the St. Mary Hospital in DeKalb.

Survivors include her son, Professor John R. (Lori) Twombly; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a stillborn son; son, (Paul D); sisters (Grace Blodgett and Viola Plummer); and brothers, (Victor and Bernard Reafsnyder).

CHICAGO – Illinois Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, already facing an uphill battle for re-election, is entering the crucial final week before Election Day weakened by comments about his opponent that critics attacked as racist and “beyond reprehensible.”

Two organizations whose endorsements Kirk touted as indicators of his independence withdrew their backing over the weekend, issuing blistering rebukes. Both said they’re now supporting Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth.

Democrats are relying on winning Illinois as they look to regain control of the Senate. The party must pick up four or five seats to do so, depending on whether they retain control of the White House.

Kirk spent the weekend largely outside the public eye. Although he attended some community events, his campaign didn’t advise reporters or the public beforehand – a highly unusual move for any candidate in the waning days of a campaign, but one that allowed him to avoid rehashing the incident in the media. Duckworth had a full campaign schedule, including get-out-thevote events with civil rights icon and U.S. Rep. John Lewis.

Karmeier sworn in as Illinois Supreme Court chief justice

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Supreme Court Justice Lloyd Karmeier was sworn in Monday as the 120th chief justice of the state’s highest court during an installation ceremony in Springfield.

Karmeier, 76, was sworn in by Justice Rita Garman, who served three years as chief justice.

In remarks after being sworn in, Karmeier frequently referenced his family and others who helped him climb the legal ranks.

He noted he was wearing a robe that belonged to former Illinois Supreme Court Justice Byron House.

“No one can stand here, or sit in this position, without being profoundly moved,” he said.

State PARCC tests see more participation, improvement

CHICAGO – More than half of Illinois’ schools have improved in the second year of controversial state PARCC exams, and test participation rose statewide.

This year’s state exam results were made public Monday in the annual Illinois Report Card, an accumulation of data painting a wide picture of schools that includes various factors.

The percentage of students meeting or exceeding Illinois standards in math went from 28.2 percent in 2014-15 to 30.5 percent in 2015-16. The percentage of students meeting or exceeding state standards for English declined from 37.7 percent to 36.2 percent.

State officials believe too many students still go to college unprepared.

Officials unveil high-speed rail passenger station

DWIGHT – A new high-speed passenger rail station has been completed in the northeast Illinois community of Dwight.

The (Kankakee) Daily Journal reported that Illinois Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn announced the completion last week. The new station is among upgrades aimed at improving high-speed service between Chicago and St. Louis.

The 1,500-square-foot building features a glass facade and modern amenities for passengers on Amtrak’s Lincoln Service.

That includes connections to bicycle and pedestrian paths and free Wi-Fi. Construction began last year at the site of a former grain elevator. It’s near a historic train depot in Dwight.

The roughly $3 million project will be paid for through a federal grant.

Kirk Campaign spokeswoman Eleni Demertzis said Monday Kirk is proud of his leadership in fighting discrimination and gun violence. Kirk has an “F’’ rating from the National Rifle Association and was the second GOP senator to support same-sex marriage.

“The HRC and ARS decisions are unfortunate because they were based on politics instead of reality and further exemplified just how uncomfortable they were in supporting a Republican who was a leader for their efforts,” Demertzis said.

At least 17 dead in Chicago violence over weekend

CHICAGO – At least 17 people were killed and more than 40 injured in Chicago’s street violence over the weekend.

The Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times analyzed police data from Friday afternoon to early Monday, calling it 2016’s deadliest weekend. Chicago police couldn’t confirm that, although a spokesman said their weekend homicide count from midnight Friday through Sunday was 18.

Either way, the toll surpassed the newspapers’ analysis of holiday weekends when violence typically spikes. The Tribune reported that six people were fatally shot over Memorial Day weekend, five over Fourth of July and 13 over Labor Day. The October weekend deaths included seven people younger than 20 years old.

NEW YORK – Zika virus ravages the testes of male mice, sharply reducing sperm counts and fertility, says a study that raises a new specter about its threat to people.

Experiments found testes of infected mice shrank about 90 percent by weight, while their output of useful sperm fell by three-quarters on average, and often more. Now it’s time to find out whether Zika causes similar damage in men, experts said.

Michael Diamond of the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, a senior author of the study, said he suspects that in mice, the damage is permanent.

But experts unconnected with the study agreed that it can’t be assumed that the mouse results apply to people.

Justices sympathetic over school, service dog suit

WASHINGTON – A fluffy white goldendoodle named Wonder waited patiently Monday outside the Supreme Court while the justices inside debated the legal rights of disabled children who want to bring their service dogs to school. The court was considering the case of Ehlena Fry, a 12-yearold Michigan girl with cerebral palsy who was barred from bringing Wonder to class when she started kindergarten in 2009.

Mayor: High-profile trials let Charleston show unity

CHARLESTON, S.C. – As two high-profile cases with racial overtones get underway in Charleston, community leaders are calling on the city to again show unity and refrain from violence.

Jury selection began Monday in the trial of Michael Slager, a former police officer accused of murder in the shooting death of Walter Scott as he ran from a traffic stop in April 2015. If convicted, Slager, who is white and 34 years old, faces 30 years to life imprisonment. Separately, jury selection resumes next week in the federal trial of Dylann Roof, a 22-year-old white man who is on trial for the June 2015 slayings of nine black parishioners during a Bible study at a Charleston church.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Donald Trump plunged into his final-week sprint to Election Day on Monday decidedly on his terms: unleashing a harsh new attack against Democrat Hillary Clinton in Michigan, a state that hasn’t favored a Republican for president in nearly three decades.

His message was welcomed by supporters, but his location frustrated anxious Republicans who fear their nominee is riding his unorthodox political playbook too long – even as Clinton’s developing email problems offer new political opportunity.

“Her election would mire our government and our country in a constitutional crisis that we cannot afford,” Trump declared in Grand Rapids, pointing to the FBI’s renewed examination of Clinton’s email practices as evidence the former secretary of state might face a criminal trial as president.

National polls show a tightening race. But with more than 23 million ballots already cast through early voting, it’s unclear whether Trump has the time or capacity to dramatically improve his standing over the next week in states such as Michigan, where few political professionals in either party expect a Republican victory on Nov. 8.

Clinton, defending herself from the new FBI examination, focused Monday on battleground Ohio, a state Trump’s team concedes he must win.

“There is no case here,” Clinton insisted.

“Most people have decided a long time ago what they think about all this.”

er Robby Mook decried what he called a “blatant double standard” following a CNBC report that the FBI director opposed releasing details about possible Russian interference in the U.S. election because it was too close to Election Day. The AP has not confirmed the CNBC report, and the FBI declined to comment on Monday.

Amid the attacks and counterattacks, the race for the White House remains at its core a test of a simple question: Will the conventional rules of modern-day campaigns apply to a 2016 election that has been anything but conventional?

For much of the year, Clinton has pounded the airwaves with advertising, assembled an expansive voter data file and constructed a nationwide political organization that dwarfs her opponent’s.

The Democratic presidential nominee and her allies in a dozen battleground states have more than 4,800 people knocking on doors, making phone calls and otherwise working to support her candidacy. Clinton’s numbers, as reported in recent campaign filings, tripled those of Trump and the national and state Republican parties.

The New York businessman over the past year has largely ignored the key components of recent winning campaigns, depending instead on massive rallies and free media coverage to drive his outsider candidacy.

This week, he’s devoting his most valuable resource – his time – to states where polls suggest he’s trailing Clinton by significant margins.

WASHINGTON – The FBI will have to sort through thousands of newly discovered emails in its renewed examination of the practices of Hillary Clinton and her aides, a U.S. official said Monday, raising questions about whether any findings might be released before Election Day. The Justice Department, moving to address concerns over the timing of the revelation of the emails and a potential post-election spillover, said Monday that it would “dedicate all necessary resources” to concluding the review promptly.

The timing matters because Donald Trump has been assailing Clinton ever more vigorously since FBI Director James Comey revealed the existence of the emails in a remarkable and ambiguous letter to Congress last Friday. He said agents would take steps to review the messages, which were found on a computer seized during an unrelated investigation involving the estranged husband of a Clinton aide.

The FBI and Justice Department closed that investigation, which examined whether Clinton and her aides had mishandled classified information, without charges in July. The official who spoke to the AP was not authorized to discuss an ongoing investigation by name and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The fact that another cache of emails potentially important to the investigation has only recently been discovered raises an immediate question: How could Abedin have been unaware of their existence? The answer is not yet clear, but it’s possible that either she did not know about the emails on the computer of her estranged husband, forgot about them or for some other reason did not turn them over.

Chief development officer Tom Monaghan said the company is in the process of finding someone to be a local franchise owner, which he hopes will happen in the next three months.

“We’re looking for a small business owner to be the ‘pretzel mayor’ of their town,” he said.

Monaghan said the person should be community-minded, as part of the company’s operations includes selling its products wholesale to places like schools, hospitals and nursing homes.

In addition to traditional soft pretzels and party trays, products include specialty items such as pretzel cheesesteaks, spicy pretzel sausages, pepperoni pretzel melts and pretzel

Monaghan said the company foresees being able to support multiple locations in DeKalb based on research into the demographics of the city, but the owner of the local franchise will ultimately decide where to operate.

“It costs $150,000 to $200,000 to get an in-store location up and running, and a little more with traditional stores,” he said. “So, it depends on the person.”

DeKalb being home to Northern

Illinois University is part of the appeal, but the large population of children is also a draw for the company, he said.

“We sell our pretzels for fundraisers in the schools, birthday parties, soccer games, in the cafeteria at lunch time,” Monoghan said.

Philly Pretzel Factory was founded in 1998 in Philadelphia by Dan DiZio and Len Lehman and has expanded to more than 150 locations, according to the company’s Facebook page.

An October email surprise Political tension is running high in the United States, extraordinarily so, we’d say. And so it behooves everyone in a position of official responsibility to do everything he or she possibly can to help maintain stability – while avoiding all avoidable provocations – until the bitter competition between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump runs its ugly course Nov. 8.

That is the context for Friday’s announcement by James Comey, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, that his agency is again looking into Clinton’s private email server in light of newly discovered emails “that appear to be pertinent to the investigation.” Comey may have had good reason to inform Republican committee chairmen in Congress of the review, but his timing was nevertheless unfortunate, given its potential to affect a democratic process in which millions of people are already voting.

What might his reason be? On the merits, Clinton erred by using a private email server for her official communications as secretary of state – although as we have previously argued, the matter has been greatly overblown. According to the previous FBI review, the small amount of classified material that moved through Clinton’s private server was not clearly marked as such, and no harm to national security has been demonstrated.

The FBI conducted a thorough investigation for any prosecutable offenses, especially any involving the transmission of classified information. Comey rightly recommended against bringing charges; he told his staff that the decision was “not a cliff-hanger.” In deference to the reality that the target of the inquiry was a major-party nominee for president, he gave the public a summary of the facts and law behind his decision.

Comey went too far, however, in providing raw FBI material to Congress, notwithstanding its important oversight role; that attempt to appease Republicans set a precedent that future partisans who are unhappy with the results of FBI investigations may exploit.

Comey found himself in a bind when his investigators turned up additional, previously unexamined Clinton emails, apparently on devices belonging to top aide Huma Abedin and her husband, Anthony Weiner, seized during an FBI probe of the latter’s alleged sexual misconduct with a minor. (As if this could not get any more bizarre.) If Comey failed to tell Congress before Nov. 8 about his decision to review them, he would be accused – again – of a politically motivated cover-up. By revealing it, he inevitably creates a cloud of suspicion over Clinton that, if the case’s history is any guide, is unwarranted. Hence Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta’s not unreasonable demand that Comey “immediately provide the full details of what he is now examining.”

Podesta said he is “confident” full disclosure “will not produce any conclusions different from the one the FBI reached in July.” If so, the question will be how badly damaged was Clinton’s candidacy by the 11th-hour re-eruption of a controversy that never should have generated so much suspicion or accusation in the first place.

Provide all schoolchildren free lunch For two months, Josette Duran of New Mexico packed two lunches for her teenage son, Dylan. When he first asked for the extra meal at the beginning of the school year, she figured he was hungrier than usual. Eventually he told her he was giving the food to a friend whose mother couldn’t pay the lunch bill.

Duran continued to pack the second lunch.

When the other boy’s mother found out and tried to pay Duran back, she refused the money.

When a volleyball team raised $400 to reimburse her, she used it to pay past-due accounts for kids at her son’s school.

“Now nobody in that school owes any money, and everybody can eat,” she said in an Oct. 14 Facebook video.

Her generosity was contagious.

Jerry Fenton, more than 1,000 miles away in Burlington, Iowa, heard the story. He donated $700 to pay overdue lunch bills for students at Grimes Elementary School in Burlington, which he had attended as a child.

Such acts of generosity deserve recognition and should inspire the rest of us. But they should not be necessary when it comes to school lunch.

This country is long overdue in reconsidering how it feeds millions of schoolchildren each day. Every child in a K-12 school should receive a free lunch. All of us should share in covering

the expense the same way we fund many other costs of education, from heating school buildings to paying teachers.

Isn’t lunch as standard a part of the school day as math class?

Providing lunch to everyone is hardly a radical idea. Taxpayers already subsidize low-cost and free meals for more than 30 million students each day. How much more would it cost us to feed them all? And how much of the expense could be offset by eliminating the bureaucracy and administrative expenses in the current system?

It was 1946 when the National School Lunch Act was established. Although updated over the years, the structure remains basically the same.

The federal government gives cash subsidies and food to schools. The schools agree to meet federal requirements.

But the system inevitably turns a lunch lady into a collection agent. It embarrasses families who owe money or must admit to being poor so their children can get free meals. It embarrasses children who receive an “alternative” meal when their account is in arrears. Schools are awash in paperwork.

And generous people feel compelled to donate money so children can eat a meal at school.

There must be a better way.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Schmack’s character makes him best choice for state’s attorney

Clinton’s support level basically stayed the same (within the margin of error, anyway), while Trump’s perceptibly grew, cutting Clinton’s lead toward statistical insignificance. The ABC News numbers are an exaggerated version of what’s happened to Clinton’s average poll lead, which was cut from 7.1 percent Oct. 18 to 4.6 percent Oct. 28.

ABC News pollster Gary Langer explains the changes as movement by Republican-leaning voters back toward Trump.

Focusing on a single poll’s results is rightly criticized as cherry-picking by smart polling analysts. But in our “let’s pretend Trump won” world, this particular poll sets out with particular clarity a trend that explains what happened.

For one thing, it’s a world where voters were given time to ponder,

tells us what we want to hear, Schmack has the honesty, integrity and courage to tell us what we need to hear even when it may not be popular. If you follow politics as I do, you know this is a rare quality that deserves to be recognized.

In the end, most elections come down to a popularity contest. Unfortunately, the ability to win a popularity contest is not a useful or desirable skill for a state’s attorney. Personally, traits like honor, integrity, wisdom and experience are what matter to me. The ability to understand and address problems realistically matters to me. The efficient and effective use of our community’s resources matters to me.

And having the courage and conviction to stand up for what’s right matters to me.

If these things matter to you as well, I urge you to join me in voting for Richard Schmack for state’s attorney.

To the Editor: In an age of highly charged nonstop national campaign coverage, it’s easy to overlook the importance of our local elections.

They may not inspire the passion of a national race, but they often have more impact on our daily lives.

Because of this, I am writing to bring attention to the race for DeKalb County state’s attorney and explain why Richard Schmack has my support.

Honesty, integrity, courage and real-world experience fighting for our community are just some of the reasons I will be voting for his re-election. Mr. Schmack’s response to a question posed to both candidates in a recent Daily Chronicle article (State’s attorney candidates make their case, Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2016) clearly demonstrates these characteristics: Both candidates were asked, “Do people with limited financial means get equal treatment in the criminal justice system?”

Amato said yes, in DeKalb County, they do.

Schmack said “Absolutely not. Simple buying power guarantees that the very wealthy have an enormous advantage when they or their families are charged with a crime.”

This question reveals a stark contrast Scot Lohr DeKalb between the two candidates. While Amato

read and perhaps reread some of the Clinton campaign’s emails revealed by WikiLeaks. They heard a Clinton spokesman try to discredit the leaks as Russian disinformation, possibly altered. But they may also have noticed the Clinton folks saying they had no time to check on their authenticity.

Over the past week, the emails started getting coverage in mainstream media.

The coverage has not been so vivid as the coverage of Trump’s denunciations of Miss Universe 1996, but it has been coverage nonetheless. And the stories have been unsettling.

Consider this message from Neera Tanden, head of the pro-Democratic Center for American Progress, to her predecessor, John Podesta, chief of staff in the Bill Clinton White House and counselor in Barack Obama’s (two smart people who have operated at high levels for a long time): “Do we actually know who told Hillary she could use a private email? And has that person been drawn and quartered?” It was in July 2015, a month after Trump entered the race.

And it’s unnerving to read Abedin in 2015, years after Clinton’s concussion, emailing spokeswoman Jennifer Palmieri, “She’s going to stick to notes a little closer this am, still not perfect in her

head.” There could be an untroubling explanation, but it doesn’t suggest the kind of confidence you’d like people to have in a president.

Much embarrassing information about the Clintons has come out on Friday afternoons, so it’s perhaps fitting that early Friday afternoon, FBI Director James Comey announced that the FBI is reopening its investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private email servers because of the discovery of additional emails during an investigation of Abedin’s estranged husband, Anthony Weiner, in an unrelated case.

Comey’s July 5 statement that Clinton, although “extremely careless,” would not be criminally prosecuted hurt her in polls; this Oct. 28 announcement won’t help. Whether it will send us hurtling into the “let’s pretend” world of President Trump is unclear, but it may get us closer.

Do I think we’ll get there? No. But I’m less certain than I was last week.

The wry wit of David Brinkley was evident in his book mentioned above. when he wrote about an election in Texas. At one point he described President Lyndon Johnson and other politicians going through a cemetery to copy names off tombstones to add to voting rolls. One stone was covered with moss and hard to read, so they skipped it. But according to Brinkley, Johnson said, “You will not skip it. He’s got as much right to vote as anybody in this cemetery.”

You’re probably familiar with the question these days during a crisis, “What would Jesus do?” I am wondering what a Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, or FDR would think about today’s campaigning?

To the Editor: Because this presidential campaign began so early last year, I wondered about other campaigns. Research revealed that as early as February 1983, Sen. Alan Cranston of California, announced he was running for president in the 1984 election (Source: “Everyone Is Entitled to My Opinion,” by David Brinkley).

Political campaigns are mental and physical endurance contests.

It takes a thick skin to handle all that is hurled at them. Intelligence, too. But, one would think that anyone intelligent enough to run the country would be too intelligent to seek the office.

Because we live in the age of television, we can easily see how the presidents age while in office.

Teddy Roosevelt referred to the presidency as “the arena.” It’s also referred to as a prison, living in the White House. Others have spoken of the loneliness of the presidency.

So why do they seek the office?

A question in a poll once asked: “Would you rather be president for four years or spend a week in jail?” Result was that 52 percent said they’d rather go to jail.

Let’s play “Let’s Pretend.”

When I was a child, there was a Saturday morning radio program called “Let’s Pretend.” It used words and sounds to encourage young children to paint pictures in their heads of make-believe worlds.

So in that spirit, let’s pretend that history will show Donald Trump as being elected president Nov. 8. That result is hard to imagine for anyone who has been watching closely since the first presidential debate, which was Sept. 26.

Since then, nearly all indications have been that Hillary Clinton is certain to win. So, as a thought exercise before the results are in, let’s try to imagine how we could move from that seemingly real world to the “let’s pretend” world of President Donald Trump.

One set of clues would come from the ABC News tracking poll. On Sept. 22, before the first debate, the poll showed Clinton leading Trump by a narrow 46 percent to 44 percent – virtually the same as the RealClearPolitics average of recent polls at the time. By Oct. 22, after the three presidential debates and one vice presidential debate, that lead had become 50 percent to 38 percent.

Since then, ABC News has shown Clinton’s lead narrowing – 48 percent to

When the Huskies host the Falcons on Tuesday, the two teams come in with a combined record of 3-13.

While the powerhouse programs have given way to other teams looking for a trip to Detroit, the Huskies (2-6 overall, 2-2 in MAC West) still are

The Falcons (1-7 overall, 0-4 in MAC

East) have struggled after graduating last season’s MAC Vern Smith Player of the Year Matt Johnson at quarterback, but have steadily improved the past four games after switching to redshirt freshman James Morgan.

“You start with the arm talent, then start with the athletic ability,” Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey said of the 6-foot-4, 214-pound Morgan. “Certainly for a redshirt freshman, running an offense that I’m sure had some changes of terminology and stuff in spring being his first spring ball and him coming back and now being the

starter, you see the talent. Then you see the execution get better week by week.”

The Falcons struggled mightily the first four games of the season, including a 77-10 loss at Ohio State and a 77-3 defeat at Memphis. Their only win came in a 27-26 victory over FCSschool North Dakota, which went for two late in the game and couldn’t convert.

Continued from page 16 the Falcons have lost by only a margin of 7.5 points and have had three of those defeats come by seven points or fewer.

“The 10-day break came at the right time for us, we were able to get healthy,” said Bowling Green coach Mike Jinks, whose Falcons were off last week. “When you’re playing a lot of young guys, you want to use every practice to its fullest.”

One of the Falcons’ biggest struggles this season has come on interceptions. Morgan and opening starter James Knapke have combined to throw 20 interceptions in eight games this season. It’s good news for a Huskie defense that has combined for six interceptions in the past two weeks – including four in the 44-7 victory over Buffalo.

“I think there is a combination any time you move a quarterback off the spot, and that’s anybody, you have a better rate of getting interceptions or a bad return offensively,” Carey said of Bowling Green’s interception troubles. “Certainly there’s some youthfulness there, too, that factors into those interceptions. I see those that he has made from the standpoint where there have been some lategame scenarios where they’ve been behind and sometimes you’re taking chances that you need to take at that point, and they don’t work out.”

It is also the first midweek game of the season for the Huskies, who have to go up against the Cubs playing the Cleveland Indians in Game 6 of the World Series on Tuesday night.

BOWLING GREEN PLAYERS TO WATCH Scott Miller, soph., WR: The soph-

omore wide receiver leads the Mid-American Conference with 58 receptions (7.2 a game) and has racked

up 798 yards (99.8 a game) and nine touchdowns. He also leads the conference with 1,099 all-purpose yards.

Trenton Greene, sr., LB: While the Falcons defense has left much to be desired, Greene leads the team with 74 tackles, which is fourth in the conference at 9.2 a game.

Joe Davidson, sr., P: It’s unusual to add a punter to this, but the 6-foot-7 Davidson leads the MAC with a 47.3 yards a punt. He’s kicked 15 punts more than 50 yards, including a season-high 82-yarder.

BY THE NUMBERS 7: Northern Illinois has done a

good job protecting the quarterback, allowing only seven sacks on the season, tied for the best in the MAC. 24: However, the NIU and Bowling Green defenses have only recorded a combined 24 sacks (11 for Bowling Green, 13 for NIU), which still is fewer than conference-leading Ohio (26).

24.2: Northern Illinois leads the conference with an average kick return of 24.2 yards – thanks partly to Aregeros Turner’s 97-yard return for a touchdown to start the game against Buffalo.

Cutler, Howard spark upset victory

CHICAGO – Jay Cutler threw for 252 yards and a touchdown after missing five games with a thumb injury, rookie Jordan Howard ran for a career-high 153 yards and a touchdown, and the Bears stunned the Minnesota Vikings, 20-10, on Monday night.

The Bears (2-6) sacked Sam Bradford five times while handing the NFC North-leading Vikings (5-2) their second straight loss.

Cutler was on target in his return from a sprained right thumb. Howard easily surpassed his previous high of 118 yards. Alshon Jeffery got his first touchdown reception of the season, and the Bears outgained Minnesota 403 yards to 258.

Cutler had not played since he exited against Philadelphia in the second game of the season. But with his future up in the air after coach John Fox wavered in his commitment to him as the starter, he made a triumphant return.

Whether he quieted fans who thought the Bears were better off with Brian Hoyer is another issue. But that became a moot point when Hoyer broke

his left arm last week in a Thursday night loss at Green Bay. Howard had a 69-yard run, the longest for the Bears in seven years. Zach Miller added 88 yards receiving as the Bears stopped a three-game

losing streak.

Bradford, playing behind a porous line, had another rough game after getting sacked six times the previous week against Philadelphia.

He was 23 of 37 for 228 yards.

yards with Jerick McKinnon sidelined by an ankle injury.

With a sparse and quiet crowd looking on, the Bears led 13-3 at halftime. It was almost a bigger advantage, but the Bears settled for field goals on their first two trips inside the 20.

Howard, a fifth-round draft pick, broke off a 69-yard run to the 13 on the Bears’ first possession. It was the longest rushing play for the Bears since Kahlil Bell’s 72-yarder against Philadelphia on Nov. 22, 2009. But instead of a touchdown, the Bears got a field goal from Connor Barth.

They got another field goal early in the second after Xavier Rhodes broke up a pass to Jeffery in the end zone on third down at the 10.

The Bears finally broke through midway through the second quarter when Howard scored on a 2-yard run to make it 13-0.

The Vikings drove to the Bears’ 2 in the final minute of the half. But Akiem Hicks hit Bradford for a 10-yard sack on third down, leading to a 30yard field goal by Blair Walsh.

Jeffery makes first TD reception of season

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com CHICAGO – It took until the third quarter before Jay Cutler unlocked Alshon Jeffery, making the connections with the Bears’ star receiver we expected when the gunslinger returned.

A 34-yard play on third-and-5 followed eight plays later by an 11-yard touchdown – Jeffery’s first of the season – put the Bears up 20-3 after halftime in their 20-10 upset win over the NFC North-leading Vikings.

“It don’t matter who’s out there at quarterback, but Jay’s my guy,” Jeffery said last week. “I’m excited. I look forward to it.”

In the first half, Jeffery had zero catches on four targets, but he had four catches for 63 yards after halftime, helping a Bears offense rack up 403

yards against the league’s best defense.

Cutler’s connection with Zach Miller, which dates to the 2014 preseason, also helped the Bears’ tight end catch seven passes for 88 yards.

Dowell Loggains, who has come under scrutiny for coordinating the league’s lowest-scoring offense with a far-from-ideal run-to-pass ratio, had an effective game plan. He used screen plays and quick passes to keep the Vikings’ top-ranked scoring defense on its heels. An undermanned O-line stepped up, too. Minnesota came into the night with 19 sacks but didn’t put Cutler on the turf until the third quarter, its only sack of the night.

Edge rush comes alive: With a lead and a bad offensive line in front of them, the Bears’ front seven got after Sam Bradford, sacking him five times and hitting him nine times. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said during

the week it wasn’t as simple as replicating what the Eagles did Oct. 23, sacking Bradford six times.

“I think you have to walk the fine line there, play the style that you’re accustomed to play, that you believe is the best with the talent on your team,” he said. “Philly played them straight a lot, too, they just did a good job.”

The Bears did a good job, too, and didn’t need exotic pressures. Extra rest was beneficial for Pernell McPhee (four QB hits) and Leonard Floyd, while Akiem Hicks and Cornelius Washington had big games for the D-line.

CLEVELAND – If Sunday night at Wrigley Field was any indication, the Cubs made the right decision by pursuing Door No. 2 with Aroldis Chapman in trade talks with the Yankees at the summer deadline.

That is, unless Andrew Miller gets a chance to end the Cubs’ season in the next two nights by doing what he has done throughout this postseason.

Of course, Kyle Schwarber might have something to say about that now that he returns to the Cubs’ lineup for Game 6 of the World Series in Cleveland on Tuesday and, possibly, Game 7 on Wednesday as the Cubs try to come back against the Indians.

These might be the three most intriguing – if not decisive – players for either team as this historic World Series makes its final stop, at Progressive Field, with the Indians one victory from a first title in 68 years, the Cubs a twogame streak from their first in 108.

All of which means that sweet relief from generations of heartache and failure for one city’s fan base might have been decided during one seven-day span in July.

“It wasn’t the ideal situation [being traded], but the way it’s worked out, it’s hard for us to complain,” said Miller – the Cubs’ first choice when the Yankees put back-end bullpen lefties Miller and Chapman on the trade market.

“Both of us couldn’t have asked for better places to land.”

The Cubs were in position to reverse those landing spots – or at least keep Miller from becoming the roadblock to a championship he already has proven to be.

When the Cubs balked at including either Schwarber or Javy Baez in a deal, the Cubs shifted focus to rent-a-closer Chapman for a package built around the organization’s top prospect, shortstop Gleyber Torres, and closed that deal July 25.

Seven days later, the Indians sent a top-heavy package of prospects to New York for Miller, a multi-inning horse this postseason, who’s signed through 2018.

Despite conflicting reports, the Cubs never were in play to acquire both, with the Yankees looking to drive value with separate bidding wars.

“To break up our major league team and trade Baez, who could have a huge role, and also given the way we feel

“We made it clear all along that he wasn’t a guy that was on the table,” Hoyer said. “Not only do we think he’s a legitimate middle-of-the-order bat, but I do think his makeup and his intangibles are exactly what we’re looking for. And if you believe in that you have to practice what you preach. If you believe in makeup like that, and you have a guy like that, it’s hard to deal him.”

That makeup came into play when

Schwarber outworked his rehab schedule, earning a medical green light to bat and run at least six weeks ahead of the original prognosis for his reconstructed left knee – and just in time to become the Cubs’ World Series designated hitter after only four hitless at-bats in the regular season.

“I’m very excited about writing his name in [Tuesday],” said manager Joe Maddon, who got a 3-for-7, two-walk performance in the first two games of the Series from Schwarber after 6½ months between big-league pitches.

As for Baez, he’s one of the biggest reasons the Cubs reached their first World Series in 71 years, earning coMVP honors in the National League Championship Series.

And by the time Chapman notched a career-high eight outs to close Sunday’s

3-2 victory, the Cubs started to look like they might even have wound up with the more desirable reliever.

“He’s an animal,” teammate Kyle Hendricks said.

And Chapman (42 pitches Sunday) might even be available again Tuesday, Maddon said Monday.

But Miller remains looming and rested to counterpunch – having averaged six outs an appearance during a dominant postseason.

And Hoyer knows this whole thing could come down to those two lefties – if not that week in July.

“There’s going to be a comeback at some point in [a game] this series,” he said. “For the most part, there’s a comeback in every series. And that largely comes down to the bullpen.”

had even said a word.

When he didn’t get out of Denny Hamlin’s way fast enough Sunday at Martinsville, Hamlin moved him and loudly complained about Johnson on his team radio. Asked about it after the race, Johnson literally laughed out loud.

“I’m puzzled that he had to move me like he did,” Johnson said. “I just can’t roll over. I prefer to race people cleanly.

I could have easily taken the easy route and moved him when he came back to take over the lead, and I didn’t. I hope that showed him that, ‘Look, man, I don’t have a beef.’

“Man, I’m out there to win. We got points on the line. We got a championship on the line. I got accused of racing hard?

I’ll take that as a compliment.”

Johnson has been to Homestead nine times before with a chance to win the title. He delivered six times. The situation will be different this year; all drivers will be even and the highest finisher will claim the title. Johnson hopes to show the next two weeks that he’s untouchable and nobody stands a chance in this drive for #Se7en.

from pleased. The boss sent his cars to the wind tunnel, became a constant sight to his drivers and teams. Everyone turned it up a notch, and Hendrick could see the turnaround coming together.

“Sometimes you’re not as good as you look, you’re not as bad as you look,” Hendrick said. “I don’t think we were as bad.

Now, we were pretty terrible back April, May. We started picking up speed, getting to the front, leading some laps.

“I felt like we could be at Homestead, but there’s no guarantee. There are a whole lot of people in the garage that thought they’d be at Homestead that won’t be at Homestead.”

Once Johnson won at Charlotte to advance into the third round, the first time he had made it this far in the Chase, he became a sudden lock for Homestead.

He’s great at Martinsville, has won the last four November races at Texas, and has an average finish of 7.8 at Phoenix. But he locked his championship spot down in the first race of this segment, and now has the luxury to coast for two weeks. Knaus had yet to wring the champagne out of his firesuit following Sunday’s victory before

he was already contemplating a strategy.

“We need to now sit back, look at our car allocation and make sure that we’re taking the best product that we possibly can to Homestead,” he said. “When I get to the shop, we’re going to get together, look at what it is we’ve got, we may make a quick decision, maybe make a change.”

But he cautioned that doesn’t mean he’ll order Johnson to cruise around Texas and Phoenix. It means they are in such good shape, they can play with the field for two weeks.

This is what the No. 48 team does to opponents. It kicks its program into another gear and saps all the energy out of its opponents. Jeff Gordon saw it firsthand in 2007 when he was racing his teammate for the title. When he thought he had Johnson on the ropes, Johnson strung together four consecutive victories in the Chase to put Gordon away. When Johnson grabbed that fourth win, Gordon – the greatest driver of a generation – went to victory lane and bowed to his teammate.

His strength is in his demeanor, and it absolutely gets under the skin of his opponents. He’s so cool and calm in public, tries always to be a professional. His attempt to extinguish a potential fire with Harvick last year at Chicago led Harvick to punch him in the chest before Johnson

NEW YORK – Jimmy Butler scored 22 points, Dwyane Wade had 12 in the first road game of his career not played for Miami, and the Bulls improved to 3-0 by beating the Brooklyn Nets, 118-88, on Monday night.

The Bulls had seven players in double figures, with Wade becoming the last of them when he left Bojan Bogdanovic behind with a crossover and was fouled on a drive to the basket in the fourth quarter.

Behavioral therapy can treat pain Dear Dr. K: My doctor suggested cognitive behavioral therapy to treat my chronic back pain. Does he think I’m imagining my discomfort?

Dear Reader: I’m often asked this question about cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

Because it was developed by a psychiatrist and involves “talk therapy,” people assume it is used to treat just psychological problems.

Not so. CBT can help people cope with many chronic “physical” illnesses. The symptoms caused by physical illnesses can generate anxiety and irrational fears. These, in turn, can make the pain worse.

Low back pain is the second most common cause of disability in the United States.

Yet even though back pain is so common, not all people respond in the same way to this often-disabling condition. These differing responses are due in part to different people’s attitudes and outlooks.

Don’t misunderstand; I’m not saying you are imagining your pain. But psychological factors can influence your pain. I spoke about this with my colleague Dr. Srini Pillay, assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

Pain itself can rewire your brain as well.

When pain first occurs, it impacts your pain-sensitivity brain circuits. But lasting pain switches brain activity away from pain circuits to circuits that process emotions.

That’s why emotions like anxiety often take center stage in chronic back pain. And it’s why emotional control becomes that much more difficult.

The good news is CBT and mindfulness training really can be helpful for chronic back pain. Researchers recently published a landmark study that strongly supports the use of these therapies.

Mindfulness training teaches us to be aware of, and accept, moment-to-moment physical sensations of discomfort. At the same time, it teaches us to let go of our usual negative reactions.

CBT takes a somewhat different approach. It helps us learn to observe and identify our negative thoughts about our condition and replace them with more realistic and positive ones.

I often write about CBT, largely because my readers ask about it. In my professional lifetime, it is the most important new form of talk therapy. Studies have shown its effectiveness. The evidence is convincing enough the doctor who developed the technique was honored with one of the most prestigious prizes for medical research, the Lasker Award.

Indeed, when I graduated medical school, the most prestigious form of psychiatric talk therapy was psychoanalysis, the technique developed by Sigmund Freud. CBT is increasingly used to treat psychological illnesses, and psychoanalysis seems less widely practiced. Particularly in the treatment of chronic physical illnesses, such as low back pain, CBT has become a very important form of treatment.

My brother and his wife have been married 3½ years and have an 18-month-old daughter. My sister-in-law, “Barb,” is either very rude or passive-aggressive to our mother in emails and when she thinks no one is around.

At Christmas, Barb sends out an email detailing what we are and are not allowed to buy for their daughter. If we can’t do exactly what she wants, she threatens to cancel Christmas.

Barb tells my mom because her mother doesn’t have much money, Mom can’t spend more than her mother does. So, because my family has a little more money, we are being punished.

Barb is extremely demeaning and hurtful to us. I can’t understand why my brother allows it.

Yesterday, we looked at declarer’s making five diamonds in this deal after West cashed two spade winners, then exited with a heart. What resource did West miss?

The bidding was intricate. North’s second-round two-spade cue-bid showed his hand strength. His threespade cue-bid on the next round was an unsuccessful attempt to reach three no-trump if South had a spade stopper.

West, after taking his two spade tricks, should check the high-card points. He has 12, and dummy holds 13. That leaves only 15 unaccounted for. South surely has the club and heart aces and, presumably, no more side-suit losers. West should wonder how his side might collect a trump trick. However, he should also realize that declarer knows that he, West, has the diamond queen. But because West has such good trump spots, the eight and nine, there is a chance for a trump promotion.

At trick three, West should lead the spade four -- a loser, not a winner, when you want partner to ruff.

Then the spotlight turns to East. He knows from the bidding that South is also out of spades. What is his partner doing? He must be trying for an uppercut. To play his part, East ruffs with the diamond four.

Note that when South overruffs with the 10, West gains a trump trick to defeat the contract.
