Most routes to 270 blocked for Trump, who needs surge

DES MOINES, Iowa – The race for president reaches its final mile next week amid October surprises, but on the road to the 270 electoral votes needed to win the White House, Hillary Clinton still has several ways to find her way to Washington.

The journey Donald Trump must take is perilous, at best.

Even as some national preference polls tighten, and voters wrestle with news the FBI has found new emails that may – or may not – be related to Clinton’s use of a private server as secretary of state, the billionaire Republican needs a dramatic final-stretch rebound in states where the Democratic nominee appears to have the upper hand.

The latest Associated Press analysis of the Electoral College map rates states worth 278 electoral votes as safely Democratic or leaning Clinton’s way. That analysis is based on preference polling, recent electoral history, demographic trends and campaign priorities such as advertising, travel and on-the-ground staff. In short, that means Clinton doesn’t need to win a state now rated as a toss-up to win the White House.

Trump needs to win them all – and then

go on to pick off some states that are now in Clinton’s column.

Impossible, it’s not. The effects of the FBI Director James Comey’s Friday letter to Congress, informing lawmakers of developments possibly related to the Clinton email case, might not be known until Election Day itself.

Trump leapt on the news this weekend, but so, too, did Clinton, casting Comey’s decision to act so close to Nov. 8 as “deeply troubling” as she sought to rally Democratic voters.

So, then, what is the path for Trump to chin himself to 270 votes? He’ll have to start by carrying the reliably Republican states in the West, the Great Plains and in South that make up the GOP’s Electoral College base.

From there, he’d need a run of victories in states now viewed as a toss-up. Among them, North Carolina has received as much attention from both campaigns as any – traditional battlegrounds Florida and Ohio included.

For good reason: GOP nominee Mitt Romney won the state in 2012, after President Barack Obama’s historic win there in 2008.

But after trailing in mail ballots, Democrats surged ahead of Republicans in ballots cast after the start of in-person early voting last week. Meanwhile, a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll gives Clinton a 6-point edge in the state.

Sycamore hosts 55th annual Pumpkin Festival parade

SYCAMORE – Marlin Anderson of Sycamore and his family have attended the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival Parade for 12 years – and for 12 years, they have sat in the same spot.

“We have watched the parade every year since we moved here 12 years ago,” Anderson said. “We’ve always been in the same spot, in front of the choir director of our church’s house. A few years, we even participated in the parade.”

The 55th annual Sycamore Pumpkin Festival’s parade was held Sunday.

This year’s parade featured 130 entries, including 14 marching bands and floats created by local businesses, banks, sports teams, church groups, dance troupes and nonprofit organizations.

“We have a very wide range of groups that participate in the parade every year,” Sycamore Pumpkin Festival Committee Vice President Bart Desch said.

“We have even more entries because it is an election year.”

This year’s parade’s theme, “Parade of Pumpkins,” was submitted by 7-yearold Camryn Knox, a second-grade student at North Grove Elementary. Camryn and honorary mention winners third-grade South Prairie Elementary student Emma Horton and kindergartner Adrian Davila from West Elementary rode in a car near the front of the parade. Camryn submitted the theme because her favorite part of Pumpkin Fest is the parade.

“Usually, I watch the parade with my family,” she said. “This is my first time in the parade, and I get to ride at the front.”

This year’s grand marshal was Orion Samuelson, WGN Radio’s agribusiness director and co-host of RFD-TV’s “This Week in Agri-Business.”

“As the grand marshal, I feel important, like I’m being treated like royalty,” Samuelson said while riding in a convertible during the parade with his wife, Gloria. “The parade is a wonderful finale for the festival. It’s like a homecoming, with entire families attending – even their pets.”

The parade started at the intersection of Somonauk Street and Borden Avenue and followed a 2½-mile-long route along Somonauk, Elm, California, State and Main streets. The parade went through downtown Sycamore and ended at Southeast Elementary School.

loved Halloween and wanted to showcase kids’ creativity,” Sycamore Pumpkin Festival Committee President Jerry Malmassari said. “It started as a pumpkin decorating contest, and then different groups and organizations wanted to help out. They wanted to host a parade, craft sales, a pie-eating contest. Now nearly everyone in Sycamore is involved in some way.”

Sycamore Mayor Ken Mundy said that his family has participated in the event for more than 20 years, from the time his children were in scouts. Mundy and his wife, Juanita, rode in a car together near the front of the parade.

“Everyone works together to make Pumpkin Fest happen,” Mundy said.

“It’s a generational event, and I’m thankful and proud of everyone that participates. With the variety of events, there’s something for everybody in the festival.”

Malmassari said that Pumpkin Fest attracts between 100,000 and 250,000 spectators each year, with the parade being the fest’s most-attended event.

“Every year, we have a wonderful

turnout,” he said. “I love seeing all the kids giggle and point or jump up and down with excitement when their favorite float goes by. All we can hope for is good weather.”

Museum hosts Pumpkin Smash event

news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – Pumpkins of all shapes and sizes were celebrated at this weekend’s Sycamore Pumpkin Fest, but many people might not know what to do with the popular autumn fruit after the Halloween festivities are over.

But for the first time at the 55th annual festival, the Midwest Museum of Natural History held a special program Saturday afternoon to educate the public about composting pumpkins.

One of the program’s highlights was throwing pumpkins off the museum’s deck to smash them open and break them down for composting.

Sarah Trystad, educator at the museum, said a demonstration on pumpkins and composting ties in well with Pumpkin Fest because it’s a great opportunity to learn more about the popular Halloween tradition.

“It’s good to learn about what we can do with the pumpkins after the holiday,” Trystad said. “A lot of people don’t know that a pumpkin is actually a fruit. And it’s important to learn about composting because it’s a great way to reuse food that you’re no longer using.”

Trystad said that fruits, vegetables, coffee grounds and teabags all are easy to compost, which helps enrich soils. She said materials are kept in a container or bin for a few weeks as they break down

A lot of times people just throw their pumpkins in the garbage or leave them to rot in their yard and they get yucky, she said.

But composting allows you to take organic material and put it to good use.

It helps fruit and veggies grow, and it keeps materials out of landfills.

Grace Miller, 13, of Kirkland said she knew a little bit about composting, but wanted to come to the museum during her visit to Pumpkin Fest to learn more about pumpkins.

“This is one of my favorite museums,

and I wanted to smash pumpkins,” she said. “I know a lot more about composting now.”

Grace’s father, Jeff Miller, said he loves to come to Pumpkin Fest every year, and was happy to bring his daughter to the museum while visiting Sycamore.

“We have a garden at home and try to compost,” he said. “I wish more people would compost their leaves instead of burning them, and turn them into something useful and beneficial.”

Emma Wiewel, 13, who came to Pumpkin Fest with the Millers, said she wanted to check out the festival, and thought it would be fun to smash pumpkins.

“There are many components to a pumpkin. I thought it was a vegetable, but now I know it’s a fruit,” said the student at Westminster Christian in Elgin.

“I learned it’s also a lot harder to smash small pumpkins. The large ones break easily, but the smaller ones are nearly impossible.”

Bethany Gilliam, volunteer and events coordinator, said the museum is always looking for creative ways to incorporate community events into learning opportunities, and thought the pumpkin smash was a fun idea to try this year.

“This ties in with our mission, which is to encourage our community’s appreciation of natural history using shared experiences through collections, exhibits and education,” she said.

Couple experiences unique proposal at Sycamore Pumpkin Fest

news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – It was one of the more unique pumpkins on the courthouse lawn this weekend at the Sycamore Pumpkin Fest.

A white pumpkin with a large diamond ring popping out of it and a chalkboard painted with the words: Marry Me? Joe Rocco, 26, used the display on Saturday afternoon to propose to his longtime girlfriend, Gina Reggi, 27, of Franklin Park. The couple met as students at Northern Illinois University. Their first date was at Pumpkin Fest six years ago.

Reggi, who said ‘yes,’ said she had no idea the proposal was coming. Both of their families were on hand to witness the special moment, which Reggi said was “very romantic.”

“I am in shock. I’m so surprised,” she said. “He put a lot of planning into this, which is more than I could ever imagine.

I’m ecstatic, it’s unbelievable.”

Rocco, of Orland Park, described himself as “relieved” after popping the ques-

tion because he had been planning the surprise for more than three months.

“We just found a house, now we’re engaged, and we have a wedding to look forward to,” he said. “I’ve loved her since I met her. I knew years ago that I wanted to marry her.”

Rocco said he had a lot of help from Reggi’s family, including her aunt, Michelle Copple of Sycamore.

Copple designed and created the pumpkin display, and put it on the courthouse lawn early Saturday morning.

“I thought of the idea to make the pumpkin look like a ring box,” Copple said. “I’m very excited. Our family loves Joe. But I’ve been a nervous wreck for three months while working on this.”

Reggi’s grandmother, Carmella Macino, said the proposal idea was perfect because Reggi loves Pumpkin Fest and looks forward to it every year.

Fire causes $40,000 damage to Sycamore home Wednesday

SYCAMORE – Firefighters continue to investigate a fire that caused about $40,000 in damages to a Sycamore home.

Firefighters were called to 974 W. State St., Sycamore, just after 6 p.m. Wednesday.

They were able to get the fire under control in about 30 minutes, according to a news release from Sycamore Fire Chief Peter Polarek.

The fire appears to have started in the area of a second-floor bedroom and hallway. Damage from the fire is estimated to be about $40,000 to the property and contents, according to the release.

No one was injured in the fire.

The Sycamore Fire Department was assisted crews from DeKalb, Cortland, Hinckley and Genoa. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

DeKalb police to host Coffee with the Chief event

DeKALB – The DeKalb Police Department will host a Coffee with the Chief event from 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 10 at the department, 700 W. Lincoln Highway, DeKalb.

The event is designed to allow residents to sit down with Police Chief Gene Lowery to ask questions or voice concerns, according to a news release from the department.

The event is free and open to the public.

Firefighters at the scene of a house fire at 1847 S. Somonauk Street in Sycamore.

A man died in a house fire Sunday morning on Somonauk Street. Firefighters were called to the house at 4:43 a.m. for a report of a fire. When they arrived, the found the house partially engulfed in flames, according to a news release from the Sycamore Police Department. A man died as a result of the fire.

No one else was in the home at the time of the blaze. “Identification of the deceased is pending,” the release said. Investigators remained on the scene most of the morning.

DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller confirmed a man had died. An autopsy is set for Monday. The man’s name has not been released. The property had working smoke alarms at the time of the fire, according to the release. Damage is estimated at 50,000. The Sycamore Fire Department is investigating the cause and origin of the fire.

The State Fire Marshal Office is assisting in the investigation, according to the release.

Firefighters from DeKalb, Cortland, Genoa-Kingston, Elburn, Hampshire and Burlington assisted the Sycamore Fire Department, according to the release.

The property serves as a regional distribution facility for St. Paul, Minnesota-based 3M, which has expanded and consolidated its distribution footprint in the city. 3M has been operating in DeKalb since 1985, and the Park 88 facility will become 3M’s largest distribution center in DeKalb, and among its largest distribution centers nationally, according to a news release.

Local officials approved incentives of up to $4 million for the project in 2015; 3M agreed to lease the properties for at least 10 years.

DeKALB – A California-based real estate investment trust bought 3M’s recently completed 987,500-squarefoot distribution center in Park 88 in DeKalb for $69.4 million.

Griffin Capital Corp. announced the purchase on behalf of Griffin Capital Essential Asset REIT II Inc., according to a news release. It bought the property from Park 88 Group LLC, which is a joint venture between Clayco and Venture One Real Estate.

“We are excited to acquire a new, state-of-the-art Class A logistics facility that serves as a primary distribution center for 3M Company’s extensive products that are used by businesses and households on a routine basis throughout the world,” Griffin Capital’s Vice President of Acquisitions, Shawn Carstens, said in a statement.

“Our acquisition of this property reinforces our REIT’s focus on driving shareholder value by investing in income-generating properties leased to well-established corporate tenants on a long-term basis, while utilizing our skills as experienced operators of large commercial properties to maximize returns on each investment.”

Mark Goode, principal of Venture One Real Estate, said the sale was good for the DeKalb area.

“Anytime you have a company investing resources in DeKalb, it’s a positive for the region,” he said.

Construction of the 3M building started last fall.

Money pours in for anti-pipeline protest

CANNON BALL, N.D. – The crowdsourcing goal was modest: $5,000, enough to help a few dozen people camping in North Dakota to protest the nearby construction of the four-state Dakota Access oil pipeline. The fund has since topped a staggering $1 million.

The fund is among several cash streams that have provided at least $3 million to help with legal costs, food and other supplies to those opposing the nearly 1,200-mile pipeline. It also might give protesters the ability to prolong their months-long encampments that have attracted thousands of supporters, as the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe pursues the fight in court.

And as the number of protest-related arrests increased this week, so did contributions – the funds raked in more than $200,000 between Thursday and Friday alone.

But demonstrators are quick to note that the amount of money raised and what they have left isn’t the same.

“It still feels unreal sometimes because it is such an astronomical figure to me,” said Ho Waste Wakiya Wicasa, the protester who set up the GoFundMe

CHICAGO – Engine pieces from an American Airlines plane that caught fire Friday on a runway at Chicago’s O’Hare airport were found thousands of feet away, a federal investigator said.

Lorenda Ward, a National Transportation Safety Board senior investigator, confirmed Saturday that the fire was caused by engine failure. What caused the engine to fail has not yet been determined, she said at a press conference.

She said the fire started in a pool of fuel under the right wing of the Boeing 767.

One piece of General Electric engine was found nearly 3,000 feet away at a UPS warehouse. Another was found about 1,500 feet away but on airport property.

Vigil held for police officer killed during car chase

CHESTER – About 150 people attended a vigil for a southern Illinois police officer killed during a chase.

The Belleville News-Democrat reported the vigil for 22-year-old Officer James Brockmeyer of the Chester Police Department was held Saturday night at a recreational complex in the city. He died

Friday night after his squad car left the roadway and flipped in Randolph County.

Brockmeyer joined the police force 10 months ago. He also had been a volunteer firefighter in the community for three years.

Volunteer firefighters were called to the crash scene to help extricate Brockmeyer from his vehicle.

Chester Fire Chief Marty Bert said “it was the first time we had to take one of our own out.”

The driver of the car Brockmeyer was pursuing remained at large Sunday morning.

Authorities: 11-year-old dead in ATV crash at festival

ZEIGLER – Authorities in southern Illinois said an 11-year-old boy has died after an accident involving an all-terrain vehicle at a festival.

Williamson County Coroner Mike Burke said in a news release that the ATV accident happened around 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Wright Mud Fest in Zeigler. The boy died after sustaining injuries from the crash.

The coroner’s office and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department are investigating.

Champaign plans homage to Susan B. Anthony

CHAMPAIGN – Advocates will pay homage to Susan B. Anthony at a downtown Champaign fountain on Election Day – a possibly historic day for women.

The Champaign News-Gazette reported organizers were inspired by well-wishers in Rochester, New York, where for years women have placed “I Voted” stickers on the 19th century activist’s grave.

Chris D’Arpa and Lucy Moynihan are urging women to meet at 6 p.m. Nov. 8 at the fountain where a plaque honoring Anthony hangs. Anthony was a leader for women’s suffrage but died more than a decade before women got the right to vote.

This election – with Hillary Clinton the Democratic nominee – could see the first woman elected U.S. president.

D’Arpa said it will be a “decidedly and deliberately nonpartisan gathering.”

Jury selection begins for officer in motorist death

CHARLESTON, S.C. – A jury being chosen this week in Charleston will have to decide whether a white former police officer is guilty of murder in the shooting of an unarmed black motorist that shocked the nation after a bystander released cellphone video of the confrontation.

Michael Slager’s attorney contends there was more to the incident than what appeared on the widely seen video clip showing Walter Scott’s shooting, including a fight between the pair and a tussle over the officer’s Taser. Coincidentally, the same week that a panel is being seated in the Slager case, jury selection begins for the trial of a former University of Cincinnati police officer who – like Slager – stands accused of murder in the shooting death of an unarmed black man.

Syria rebels keep up offensive on Aleppo

BEIRUT – Syrian insurgents on Sunday kept up their shelling of government-controlled areas of Aleppo, killing at least seven people, including three children, state TV reported, and pushing their way with car bombs and tanks into new territory in the western part of the city. The Syrian government claimed the opposition fighters used toxic gas.

The attacks raised the death toll in the three-day old offensive to at least 41 civilians, including 16 children, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition monitoring group that has a network of activists in rebel and government controlled areas in Syria.

Clinton says she won’t be ‘knocked off course’ The ASSOCIATED PRESS WILTON MANORS, Fla. – Hillary Clinton vowed Sunday that she would not be “knocked off course” in the election’s final days, as she sought to push past a new FBI email inquiry in a sexting probe that delivered a late jolt to her race against Republican Donald Trump.

“I’m not stopping now, we’re just getting warmed up,” Clinton declared during a packed rally with gay and lesbian supporters in battleground Florida. “We’re not going to be distracted, no matter what our opponents throw at us.”

Trump campaigned in Las Vegas at a casino owned by billionaire GOP megadonor Sheldon Adelson and accused the Justice Department, without offering evidence, of trying to protect Clinton after the FBI’s discovery of new emails that could be related to its investigation into Clinton’s use of a private email server.

“Hillary has nobody but herself to blame for her mounting legal problems,” Trump said during a rally.

Clinton’s advisers and fellow Democrats pressured FBI Director James Comey anew to release more details about the emails, including whether Comey had even reviewed them himself.

The message was aimed at gathering more information about what the bureau is seeking from a computer that appears to belong to disgraced former New York Rep. Anthony Weiner, the estranged husband of Huma Abedin, one of Clinton’s closest advisers.

Tim Kaine, Clinton’s running mate, said Comey owed it to the public to be more forthcoming about the emails under review by the FBI with only nine days remaining before the Nov. 8 election. Calling Comey’s

Clinton’s campaign chairman, John Podesta, said Comey’s handling of the matter was “inappropriate.”

Clinton made unannounced stops Sunday in Florida at an early voting location, a Miami brunch spot and a soul food restaurant.

She also addressed a predominantly black church, where she spoke of overcoming disappointments.

“Scripture tells us to rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance and endurance produces character,” she said. “And character produces hope.”

Clinton made no direct mention of the new FBI investigation, which has created anxiety among Democrats.

But while she criticized the FBI for a lack of transparency during a campaign appearance on Saturday, she tried to shift her attention back to Trump on Sunday, casting him as a selfish billionaire with a striking lack of empathy.

she seized on a Washington Post report about Trump appearing at a fundraiser for children with HIV and pretending to be a donor, although he never gave money to the charity.

“It’s always Donald Trump first and everyone else last,” she said.

Comey’s actions Friday have roiled the White House race, energizing Trump as polls had showed him sliding and unnerving Democrats worried about the presidency and down-ballot congressional races.

In a letter to Congress on Friday, Comey said the FBI had recently come upon new emails while pursuing an unrelated case and was reviewing whether they were classified.

The FBI is looking into whether there was classified information on a device belonging to Weiner. Federal authorities in New York and North Carolina are investigating online communications between Weiner and a 15-year-old girl.

Next Congress: Perhaps more minorities

WASHINGTON – No matter who wins the presidency, women and minorities are poised to make gains in the next Congress. The offspring of two pillars of the Washington establishment – former Vice President Dick Cheney and ex-CIA Director Leon Panetta – have a good chance to resume their families’ service in Congress.

The number of women in the Senate could increase by four or more above the current 20, with as many as three female minorities. It would be the highest number of women in the Senate in history, but nowhere near the percentage of females in the general population.

A record 167 women are running for the House. While outcomes are uncertain, analysts predict the number of women in the House for the 115th Congress that convenes Jan. 3 will exceed the current 84.

Racial minorities are expected to make historic gains, although Congress is likely to remain overwhelmingly white, male and middle-aged.

The new Congress could have some familiar names, with several former members seeking their old seats.

A look at how the demographics of Congress may change following the Nov. 8 elections.

WOMEN ASCENDANT

ate, a total likely to rise next year.

Kelly Dittmar, an assistant professor at Rutgers University and a scholar at the Center for American Women and Politics, said female candidates may benefit from running with Hillary Clinton at the top of the ticket – and from sexist comments made by Donald Trump. But she said the major boost is from Clinton’s standing. Twelve of the 16 women running for Senate this year are Democrats.

“Democratic candidates will be helped by a strong Democrat on top of the ticket,” Dittmar said. She cited Deborah Ross in North Carolina, Katie McGinty in Pennsylvania and Rep. Tammy Duckworth in Illinois as likely beneficiaries of possible Clinton coattails.

There are two states where a woman is guaranteed to win: New Hampshire, where incumbent Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte faces Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan, and California, where two Democrats – State’s Attorney General Kamala Harris and Rep. Loretta Sanchez – square off.

Not all the news for women is positive, said Dittmar, who has written research briefs outlining the prospect for female candidates in the House and Senate. Based on current polls, Maryland’s 10-member congressional delegation is likely to revert to all-male, which Dittmar called especially notable because Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., holds the record as the longest-serving woman in Congress. Rep. Donna Edwards is retir-

ing after losing a bid for the Senate.

Maryland could join more than a dozen states with all-male delegations in Congress. If elected, McGinty would be the state’s first woman to serve in the Senate and could find herself the lone woman in Pennsylvania’s 20-member congressional delegation.

“Pennsylvania has a lot of work to do” to elect more women, Dittmar said, including better recruitment of female candidates at all levels. “They are still contending with a bit of a boys’ club in Pennsylvania.”

Former Illinois Sen. Carol Moseley Braun, the first African-American woman elected to the Senate, said she was thrilled to see “people running for office who don’t fit the traditional role of wealthy, white and male.”

Braun and Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, are only the minority women who have served in the Senate.

Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto, who is running for an open seat in Nevada, joins Sanchez in seeking to become the nation’s first Latina senator, while Duckworth could become the Senate’s second Asian-American woman. Harris, the daughter of immigrants from India and Jamaica, could become just the second black woman elected to the Senate and the first with South Asian roots.

In the House, Democrat Pramila Jayapal of Washington state has a shot

at becoming the first Indian-American woman to serve in Congress, while former Delaware Labor Secretary Lisa Blunt Rochester is likely to become the first woman and first African-American to represent her state in Congress. In New York, Democratic state Sen. Adriano Espaillat could become the first native of the Dominican Republic to join Congress.

Russ Feingold of Wisconsin and Evan Bayh of Indiana, both Democrats, are trying to win back their old seats, while a few ex-House members also are running for their former jobs: Democrats Colleen Hanabusa of Hawaii, Carol Shea-Porter of New Hampshire, Brad Schneider of Illinois, Joe Garcia of Florida and Pete Gallego of Texas.

Iraq’s Shiite militias join Mosul push; bombs rock Baghdad

IRBIL, Iraq – Thousands of fighters flocked to join Iraq’s state-sanctioned, Iran-backed Shiite militias on Sunday, advancing to cut off Islamic State extremists holed up near Mosul in northern Iraq while bombers killed at least 17 people in Shiite neighborhoods of Baghdad.

Militia spokesmen said that some 5,000 fighters had joined their push to encircle from the west the country’s second-largest city of Mosul, the IS militants’ last bastion in Iraq, which is linked by road to territory it holds in Syria. Karim al-Nuri of the militias’ umbrella group, known as the Popular Mobilization Units, and Jaafar al-Husseini, a spokesman for unit member the Hezbollah Brigades, said that a total of some 15,000 Shiite fighters were now participating in the battle.

The Iraqi military confirmed the figures, which, including army units,

militarized police, special forces and Kurdish fighters would bring the total number of anti-IS forces in the offensive to more than 40,000.

The two-week-old offensive to drive IS from Mosul had been long-anticipated, since the Sunni extremists stormed into the city in 2014 and drove out a much larger Iraqi force, albeit one that was demoralized from neglect and corruption. Troops are now converging on the city from all directions, although most fighting still is taking place in towns and villages on Mosul’s outskirts.

The operation is expected to take weeks, if not months.

The Popular Mobilization Units said they will not enter Mosul itself and will instead focus on retaking Tal Afar, a town to the west that had a Shiite majority before it fell to IS in 2014. They acknowledge having help from Iranian military advisers.

Iraqi forces moving toward the city have made uneven progress since the offensive began Oct. 17. They are four miles from the edge of Mosul on the east-

ern front, where Iraq’s special forces are leading the charge. But advances have been slower in the south, with government forces still 20 miles from the city.

The U.S. military estimates IS has 3,000 to 5,000 fighters inside Mosul and another 1,500-2,500 in the city’s outer defensive belt. The total number includes around 1,000 foreign fighters.

In the hours following the announcement of Shiite reinforcements, five explosions rocked predominantly Shiite neighborhoods of the capital, Baghdad, killing at least 17 people and wounding more than 60, police said.

Police officials said the deadliest of the bombings, a parked car bomb, hit a popular fruit and vegetable market near a school in the northwestern Hurriyah area, killing at least 10 and wounding 34. Other attacks hit the northern Shaab neighborhood, as well as traders’ markets in the Topchi and Zataria areas as well as the poorer Sadr City district.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to brief reporters.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blasts. But IS has stepped up its attacks in response to the offensive in Mosul, and it was possible the group was targeting Shiite areas in retaliation for the Mosul offensive.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi air force said it had landed a C-130 transport aircraft at Qayara air base, on the southern approach to Mosul, opening a key resupply route. IS forces had been leaving explosive booby-traps to slow the advance on Mosul, and the announcement suggested the airstrip was now cleared of such danger.

Earlier, Turkey’s president warned that his government will be closely monitoring the Shiite militias’ behavior in northern Iraq and seek to safeguard the rights of ethnic Turkmens there.

In statements carried by the staterun Anadolu agency, Recep Tayyip Erdogan told reporters that the militia group could prompt a Turkish response if it “terrorizes” the Iraqi-Turkmen town of Tal Afar, where it is headed in its push around Mosul.

To the Editor: I am personally pleased that Richard Schmack is willing to serve the citizens and county of DeKalb for another term as our state’s attorney.

He has done a very fine job these last four years. Not only has his office prosecuted crime vigorously, but he has shown a unique commitment to ethics. He has supported such programs as the drug court, as well as the new mental health court.

His support from many of the County Board members who he advises reflects on his skill, experience and professionalism.

I personally have known him as a fellow attorney for more than 30 years. He is respected and is a wonderful reflection on our county. He should be retained as our state’s attorney. Please consider supporting him.

If Trump wins, paint it black

To the Editor: Donald Trump is unique.

No one can deny that he is a novelty. If elected, his die-hard supporters will quickly learn that novelty is thin, that national and global issues come in extremely complicated bundles, that the economy won’t straighten out and fly right, that joblessness rates will rise along with taxes, that Mexico isn’t paying for the wall, that women will not be reduced to his lowest common denominator, that immigrants are really nice people, and that nuclear bombs on ISIS won’t be the final international word. But they will continue to support him, even as his current campaign bus speeds over a cliff.

Simply put, Trump isn’t up for the demands of the job.

He is a stumbling, perverted game show host who wants to run the country. Foreign policy, environmental issues, public policy, negotiations for peace, and how to treat women with respect are just a few of Trump’s egregious pitfalls.

Trump can stop blaming the media or the liberals or other Republicans. His problem is oral. He has public issues of vocal incoherence. He is his own worst enemy.

If Trump is elected in November (stay with me), the White House must be repainted black. (Trump pays for the paint.) It will be a memorial to those who have been thrown under his campaign bus – the disabled, minorities, immigrants, the poor, and women. Trump will say “wrong!” The rest of us will say “right!”

Truly, I would not want to be in the shoes of local or state Republicans in Illinois seeking office in 2016. They are having a tough job convincing wary voters that they are, or are not, voting for Trump.

Either way, Trump affects how people think about voting. Barely any of them have openly endorsed him. There are better choices for candidates.

On Nov. 8, please vote.

Better gun laws would reduce senseless violence When Donald Trump speaks of the “inner city” – as when he talks about so many other things – he reveals his ignorance.

His oddly retro term fails to capture the renaissance that has swept so many urban centers; it overlooks the last three decades’ dramatic drop in violent crime; and it suggests that most black Americans live in urban ghettos, which is certainly not true.

But Trump’s insensitivity and shallowness aside, there are serious problems lingering in some urban centers, the most troubling being an uptick in the homicide rate.

During the last year or so, as criminal justice experts have noted, murders are up in several cities around the country, including Los Angeles, Houston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Chicago.

And it’s not only the nation’s larger cities that have seen an upsurge in violence; so have smaller ones such as Mobile, Alabama, where I live. According to local law enforcement authorities, Mobile has already surpassed its recent high of 31 homicides in 2014. By mid-October, police were investigating the 35th.

Why aren’t we more upset about

VIEWS Cynthia Tucker these murders? Why aren’t we holding daily protests and demonstrations to demand better police tactics to ameliorate the violence? Why aren’t we insisting that the presidential candidates outline plans to deal with poverty, joblessness and persistent hopelessness, which allow violence to flourish?

And why, oh why, aren’t we holding weekly conclaves with leading politicians to demand reasonable gun control?

Yes, we ought to react with anger and alarm when a poorly trained, trigger-happy police officer shoots down an unarmed black man.

But we also should be angry and alarmed when a lovely teenage girl such as 15-year-old Trinity Gay, daughter of Olympian Tyson Gay and a rising track star herself, is gunned down in the parking lot of a Lexington, Kentucky, restaurant, apparently caught in the crossfire between two groups of men shooting at each other earlier this month.

To keep this in perspective, vi-

olent crime still is trending downward from its lofty and frightening heights in the 1980s and early ’90s.

Chicago’s murder rate, for example, is only about half as high as it was in 1990.

It’s always wise to reiterate that most homicides are intra-racial: The vast majority of black victims are killed by black assailants, while the vast majority of white victims are killed by white assailants.

Still, some neighborhoods are suffering staggering losses. Those caught in gang wars, turf battles and revenge slayings over dumb insults include children on the playground, mothers driving to work and elderly couples out for a stroll.

And that doesn’t even take into account the actual targets (and perpetrators) of most of these crimes: young black men who have been seduced by the siren song of the streets, who have little hope for productive lives (or long lives, for that matter), who have so little self-respect that they cannot manage any respect for others. They are killing each other with a callousness that is chilling.

While the phrase “root causes” went out of vogue a long time ago (just as “inner city” did), it remains true that young men consigned to

lives of poverty and despair will frequently turn to crime. The nation needs a new plan to tackle the intergenerational poverty that has left so many of them behind.

That makes more sense than spending billions on incarceration, which leaves families bereft of husbands and fathers and produces better-trained criminals.

But the single best weapon (if I may use that term) against this senseless violence would be the better regulation of firearms, a goal that shouldn’t be beyond our reach.

Gun-rights advocates note that Chicago already has tough firearms regulations, but that doesn’t prevent nearby jurisdictions from selling weapons to Chicago residents. That means that state politicians, in Illinois and elsewhere, will have to be persuaded to crack down on gun sales.

Impossible, you say? Not if enough voters started to care about the lives of poor black people lost to street violence. Black lives certainly ought to matter, regardless of the way those lives are lost.

Let the Charleston shooter spend the rest of his life in prison In authorizing the death penalty prosecution of Dylann Roof, the white man accused of murdering nine people in a racially motivated assault at a historic African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina, Attorney General Loretta Lynch cited the “nature of the alleged crime and the resulting harm.”

There can be no disagreement about the merciless horror that occurred June 17, 2015, or about the evidence of Roof’s culpability. But we question whether justice is best served by pressing ahead with not one but two trials seeking the death penalty in the face of Roof’s offer to plead guilty in exchange for life in prison without possibility of release.

Some of the people whose lives were tragically touched by the events last year also question the

government’s decision.

The remarkable display of grace that characterized Charleston’s response to the shooting – including from family members of victims who publicly forgave the 21-yearold gunman days after the massacre – should cause federal and state prosecutors to rethink the wisdom of pressing ahead with costly trials and potentially protracted appeals that will cause the families and friends of victims to relive their trauma.

Roof is set to go on trial Nov. 7 on 33 federal charges in connection with the mass shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

It will take an estimated two to three weeks to seat a jury and then two to three weeks for the trial and deliberations. Assuming a guilty verdict, there will be an additional three to

four weeks as the jury decides the penalty.

Then, in a jurisdictional pileup over the death penalty, South Carolina plans to go to trial with its own charges.

It seems senseless. Trials involving the death penalty are expensive; imprisoning Roof for life would cost taxpayers less. Studies show that death penalty trials make it more difficult for survivors and relatives of victims to heal and recover. Three adults and two children survived the attacks; imagine what they might have to endure as these trials drag on through the end of the year.

“Racially motivated violence such as this is the original domestic terrorism,” Lynch said in explaining why the death penalty is appropriate. True. But some of the most

powerful arguments against Roof’s execution are from prominent civil rights leaders.

Wade Henderson, president and chief executive of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, wrote a Post op-ed recalling the connection between the death penalty and racial discrimination that results in disproportionately more blacks being put to death.

A poll by the University of South Carolina found a majority of black South Carolinians favor life without parole – not death – for Roof.

We urge Lynch to bring a speedy and final resolution to the federal case by accepting Roof’s guilty plea.

The state should then drop its prosecution and let Roof be locked away for the rest of his sorry life.

DAILY CHRONICLE In 2001, a group of current and former Sycamore firefighters met to promote the history of the Sycamore Fire Department and to purchase the 1923 Stutz fire truck, Sycamore’s first motorized fire pumper truck. On Thursday, Nov. 3, Gene Ege will go into detail about “The History of the Stutz Fire Truck” as part of the Sycamore History Museum’s brown bag lunch program.

Ege will discuss this important piece of Sycamore’s history, and how the community supported this preservation project. The Stutz was purchased in 1923 and its first call was in November 1923.

After being purchased by four additional owners and being moved out of state, the Stutz finally made its

way back to Sycamore in August 2001.

The Stutz has been restored due to the dedication of the Sycamore Fire Preservation Company.

“We are excited to have Gene talk about this great example of the community coming together to save this artifact from Sycamore’s past,” Michelle Donahoe, executive director of the Sycamore History Museum, said in a news release. “We even included a panel about this project in our award-winning exhibit, ‘Faces of Sycamore,’ because we wanted to provide visitors with an opportunity to make a difference, and the work of the Sycamore Fire Preservation Company demonstrates one way for residents to understand Sycamore’s tradition and history.”

Tickets still available for bus tour to last county settler cabin DAILY CHRONICLE Don’t wait to get your tickets to visit the last surviving settler cabin in DeKalb County.

On Sunday, Glidden Homestead will host the annual Barbed Wire Bus Tour of the Miller-Ellwood Pioneer Cabin near Kingston, narrated by noted area historian Steve Bigolin. The bus tour will leave from Glidden Homestead at 11 a.m. and return at 2 p.m. For fans of history, timber construction, restoration, homesteading, and barbed wire, this tour is a must.

Visitors can get a glimpse of life and living when early pioneers like Joseph Glidden came to DeKalb County in the 1830s and ’40s.

Bigolin will show the property and point out how it fits into the history of DeKalb County and barbed wire, cabins that were typical of the period, and restoration and reconstruction of these types of structures. Isaac Ellwood’s father-in-law, William Miller, built the cabin in 1835 where Ellwood’s wife, Harriet Miller Ellwood, was born two years later. Joseph Glidden lived in a similar cabin on the Glidden Homestead when he settled in DeKalb 172 years ago.

The cabin was relocated and expertly restored by Ney Grange and the DeKalb County Forest Preserve, with the help of an authority on log cabins, and became a county historical site in 2014.

Seating is limited and tickets cost $20; $15 for Homestead members.

St. Mary School event to honor veterans DAILY CHRONICLE

St. Mary School in DeKalb will host “We Salute You: WWII and Korean War Veterans,” a Guardian Angel program fundraiser, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 12 at the school at 210 Gurler Road.

The evening will feature a presentations by St. Mary students, a Wall of Honor of World War II and Korean War veterans, a “Then and Now” drone presentation, live performance by Jazz in Progress and appetizers.

Dinner, provided by Fatty’s Pub & Grille, will be served at 6:30 p.m. There will be a cash bar and 50/50 raffle with 10 percent of the proceeds benefiting Honor Flight.

The Guardian Angel program provides school tuition assistance to families in need.

Dinner tickets cost $30 and raffle tickets cost $5 each or five for $20. Tickets are available at the St. Mary Parish Office, St. Mary School, Lehan Drug or Barb City Manor.

sports@daily-chronicle.com CHICAGO – Every member of the No. 13 Sycamore Spartans was beaming as bright as their dyed golden hair after upsetting the No. 4-seeded Solorio Academy, 42-21, in Saturday’s first round of the Class 5A playoffs.

“There’s nothing better than winning a playoff game, especially coming into the playoffs being 5-4 and beating a better seed than you – it’s awesome,” Spartans senior quarterback Ty Sulaver said. “We pulled off what some people would say is an upset, but we don’t think that. We had faith in each other from the beginning.”

Sulaver was electric, racking up four of the team’s six touchdowns. His favorite target was junior running back Peyton Wiegmann, whom he hit for two touchdowns – a 54-yard score early in the first quarter and a 51-yarder late in the third. Sulaver finished the day 6-for-11 for 196 yards, three scores in the air and another on the ground.

Wiegmann punished the Sun Warriors’ defense, racking up 141 yards on 22 carries. He accounted for three of the team’s scores – two in the air and one that he punched in from 2 yards out with 46 seconds left in the first half, which put the Spartans up, 14-7.

“It was a great win,” Wiegmann said. “I just hit the holes hard and waited to see what would happen.”

Weeks 2 and 7 this season. Matt Kennett, the Spartans’ 6-foot senior cornerback, gave Solorio fits, breaking up multiple passes. Middle linebacker Austin Perry also came up with his share of highlight-worthy hits for the Spartans.

Junior Quincy Patterson, the Sun Warriors’ NCAA Division I-bound quarterback, gave his team chances and accounted for two of its three scores. He was dangerous in the air, going 15-for-32 with 219 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, he rushed

15 times for 96 yards.

“They’ve been racking up the points all year,” Spartans coach Joe Ryan said. “The idea was to win by one, and that’s all you’ve got to do this time of year.”

The duo of Sulaver and Wiegmann combined for the first three Sycamore scores of the game. Solorio kept itself in the game, tying it at 7-all on a 7-yard run from Justin Members with 7:07 left in the first half. Sulaver gave his team a three-score lead with the 51-yard TD to Wiegmann, followed by a leaping 3-yard score of his own just minutes later to put Sycamore up, 28-7.

The Sun Warriors answered almost immediately as Patterson hit Jermaine Price for a 26-yard touchdown with less than two minutes to play in the third.

Sulaver stole the momentum right back, firing a rocket to Bobby Cole from 45 yards out to improve the Spartans’ lead to 35-14 early in the final frame.

Sycamore would strike once more, completing an 11-play, 50-yard march with what should’ve been Wiegmann’s

fourth TD. He was hit hard in the end zone, however, and fumbled. Fortunately for the Spartans, Luke Ryan recovered the ball to put his team ahead, 42-14.

Solorio answered on its next possession, needing just seven plays to cover 65 yards. Patterson found a wide-open Terrence Bolden who dashed 23 yards to reach the end zone.

Every time the Sun Warriors looked to be on the move, they hurt themselves with penalties. In the second half alone, the Sun Warriors drew 11 flags – three of which were declined – for a loss of 74 yards. And adding to their frustration was a controversial and arguably game-changing call that ruled Patterson’s long pass to Robert Chayka, who was in the red zone, incomplete, despite the ball never appearing to hit the ground.

“Sometimes calls go your way, and sometimes they don’t,” Ryan said.

“There’s a lot of plays in the game, and I’m sure they think that was unfortunate – and I’m sure we would have, too.”

Sycamore moves on to face Rochelle, which it beat, 35-21, last week to end the regular season. With next week’s opponent fresh in his team’s mind, Joe Ryan said he’d give the Spartans 48 hours to revel in their victory before getting back to work.

“Anytime you win this time of year, you’re happy,” the Sycamore coach said. “If you don’t win, the pads go away.”

“We just want to get another one and keep it rollin’,” Sulaver said.

KIRKLAND – Coach Jason Keneway hugged his players as an emotional Hiawatha football team left the field Saturday after its 40-12 loss to LeRoy in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs – its first playoff game since 1987.

The first-year coach said that from what he’s seen of his team – a 7-2 regular season and a No. 5 seed in the postseason – he doesn’t think it will be a long wait before the team returns to the playoffs.

“They’ve got the taste now. They know it’s possible,” Keneway said.

“That’s the biggest part. They know it’s possible, and they know the work it took to get here. They’ll step it up again. We’re not done yet.

“They were hungry to break a 29year playoff drought. You know they’re going to be hungry to get past the first round.”

The Hawks (7-3) kept the game close for a half, trailing, 18-6, after two quarters and actually running more firsthalf plays than the No. 13 Panthers (73). But LeRoy opened the second half with a 16-play drive that ate 8:01 off the clock, and the only play in it that went for more than 7 yards was a 14-yard scoring run by Trevor Bulington.

LeRoy’s roster was more than twice as big as the Hawks’, and Keneway said that drive wore them out.

“That’s their offense – beat you down with runs,” Keneway said.

“Long drives like that really kill our offense because those same guys have to turn around, get the kick return, then they’re right back on offense. It’s tough when you don’t have those second guys.”

After 15 carries for 151 yards in the first half, the Panthers finished the game with 354 yards on the ground, including 210 for Bulington. They attempted just five passes and completed two, both for first-half touchdowns.

“We used that formula last year to get to the semis – keep the ball out of the hands of our opponents,” LeRoy coach BJ Zeleznik said. “It’s so important to us to be successful, we put it on our sweatshirts. Run the ball and be successful. It’s on our apparel, so that’s what we try to do.”

After the long drive pushed the lead to 26-6, Hiawatha went three-and-out, but Braden Watson drew a roughing-the-punter call, setting the Hawks up with a fresh set of downs, but they were unable to convert on that, either.

A quick score by the Panthers, a three-and-out-by the Hawks, and a twoplay scoring drive for LeRoy put the game away.

“They just read our plays and filled the holes,” Watson said. “They are a solid team, and I tip my hat to them.”

Hiawatha had 123 yards of offense in the first half but finished with just 185, including only 73 on the ground.

“They were really fast off the line – with size, too,” Keneway said. “We had difficulty running the ball, which is kind of our bread and butter, and we struggled with that most of the game.

We tried to open up the passing game, but they came with blitzes. They just overwhelmed us up front.”

Even with the loss, Keneway called the season a success, and Dunbar agreed whole-heartedly.

Sycamore boys and Kaneland girls qualify for Ill. championships

sports@daily-chronicle.com BELVIDERE – Two Northern Illinois Big 12 conference cross country teams and one individual qualified for the Class 2A State Championships in Peoria with a strong showing Saturday at the Belvidere Sectional.

The Sycamore boys team took third place, and the Kaneland girls team took fourth. Kaneland junior Matthew Richtman took third overall and qualified as an individual.

Spartans junior Stephen Poorten led the way for Sycamore, taking fourth overall with a time of 15:08. Sycamore placed all seven of its runners in the top 75 out of 140 runners, with Poorten, senior Connor Farrell and junior Jake Carani all finishing in the top 25 in scoring.

“The one thing we talked about was running our race today,” Sycamore coach Mike Lambdin said. “We needed everyone to be at their PR or slightly better. We didn’t need some superhuman effort from our team. I always talk about our depth; but when you have three runners like Connor, Jake and Stephen, who are always at the front of a race, you have some real quality to go with that depth.”

Lambdin also said that while there is a lot of pressure in running at state, he stresses the importance of keeping an even keel in preparation for the state meet.

“You can’t run every race like it is the Olympics,” Lambdin said. “That is so mentally exhausting on an athlete. We are lucky enough to have an athletic department that sends us to the First to the Finish Invite early in the season, so we got to run that like it was a dress rehearsal for state. We’re going to get down there Friday, practice Friday afternoon and then head to Avanti’s for a big pasta dinner.”

Poorten and teammates were sitting back after the first mile. While they were buried deep headed into the second mile, the Spartans picked up the pace and made up for lost ground.

“We really hit that second mile hard,” Poorten said. “The biggest thing is to keep your cadence. Some guys surge all out in that second stage, especially during the incline. They end up killing their energy going up the hill. We kept it nice and smooth

going up the hill and caught a lot of people going down.”

For the Knights, Richtman had another strong showing. His 15:04.1 was good enough for third place overall.

He finished the fastest out of all of the individual runners.

“I’m hoping for another PR next week,” Richtman said. “After next week, I am looking forward to getting into the weight room and getting stronger. I’ll start my preparation for track and just look to keep working hard from there.”

The Kaneland girls team embraced a wave of emotion when it found out that it had qualified. The team mobbed one another and screamed with excitement when coach Doug Ecker brought the news back to camp.

“The girls did a great job,” Ecker said. “We ran our best race of the season today. Rachel [Richtman] was great again, finishing in the top 10.

But what really did it for us were our next three runners. Grace Purcell, Andrea Wells and Becca Richtman ran extremely well. Our No. 5, Tessa Brennan, hung in there and sealed the deal for us. We’re based on a team aspect.

We don’t have a true No. 2, so our 2, 3 and 4 finishing so close to one another was huge for us.”

Freshman Rachel Richtman took seventh overall with a time of 18.07.1.

She echoed Ecker’s words about team effort.

“I’m so proud of us,” Rachel Richtman said. “My race wasn’t the race I expected for me today. I didn’t run as well as I could have, but my teammates ran great. I’m just going to keep doing what I have been doing so far this year.”

Sycamore also was represented in the girls race. Sophomore Hannah Kirby qualified as an individual Oct. 22 at the Burlington Regional. Kirby placed 89th overall out of the field of 140 runners, clocking in at 20:40.8. For Kirby, she hopes that this is just the beginning.

“It wasn’t my best race,” Kirby said. “I gave it all that I could; I ran my hardest. This was my first time in a race this big. I had a lot of fun. I want to get back to this meet, so I am going to increase my mileage, run more often and work on my abs. Abs are big because they support your back and make you faster.”

Chada finished in 15:27.55, ahead of Rock Falls’ Brayden Hamblen (15:46.2).

On the girls side, Royals senior Audrey Harrod took the final qualifying spot, taking 11th overall in 20:07.41, edging out Newman’s Teagan McKenna by 7 seconds for the final spot.

The Genoa-Kingston girls were in the final spot in the 14-team field.

DeKalb boys, girls have season end:

The DeKalb boys were ninth in the 12-team field, while the DeKalb girls were 14th out of 18 teams at the Class 3A West Aurora Sectional.

Christina Ryzhov led the DeKalb girls with a 28th-place finish in 18:44.53 – the last qualifying spot went to St. Charles North’s Madison Kaufmann and her 18:34.91.

On the boys side, Thomas Wuchte paced the Barbs in 16:16.07, good for 35th place. The last individual qualifier was West Aurora’s David Castillo (15:54.07).

CHICAGO – They’ve waited 108 years for a championship. So with this World Series on the verge of slipping away, the Cubs could not wait any longer.

Manager Joe Maddon summoned closer Aroldis Chapman from the bullpen in the seventh inning for the first eight-out save of his big league career, needing to hold off the Cleveland Indians in Game 5.

As nervous fans fretted at Wrigley Field, Chapman fired his 100 mph heat and preserved the Cubs’ 3-2 win Sunday night, cutting Cleveland’s lead to 3-2.

The Cubs won a Series game at Wrigley for the first time since Game 6 in 1945.

“High anxiety,” first baseman Anthony Rizzo said. “A lot of deep breaths. Every pitch gets bigger and bigger as the game goes on. It’s unbelievable. Great win here, we sent these fans off with a win, now we have to go to Cleveland and win.”

Now, the team that led the majors in wins this year will try to extend its season again Tuesday night when Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta faces Josh Tomlin at Cleveland in Game 6.

The Cubs are trying to become the first club to overcome a 3-1 Series deficit since the 1985 Kansas City Royals and the first to do it by winning Games 6 and 7 on the road since the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates.

Cleveland, in search of its first title since 1948, is in search of its third-ever title and has won the championship at home just once, in 1920.

Chapman hadn’t pitched in the seventh inning since 2012. He threw 42 pitches, 15 of them at least 100 mph.

The lefty struck out four and fanned Jose Ramirez, who had homered earlier, with 101 mph heat to end it.

Chapman came in with a runner on second and one out. He stranded the potential tying run at second base in the seventh and at third in the eighth, then pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.

Lester, the Game 1 loser, improved to 4-1 in Series play by allowing two runs and six hits.

Ramirez homered in the second to put the Indians ahead. Cleveland closed within a run in the sixth when Rajai Davis singled, stole second and scored on a two-out single by Francisco Lindor.

Mike Napoli singled against Edwards leading off the seventh and took second on a passed ball by rookie catcher Willson Contreras, who had just replaced David Ross.

Carlos Santana flied out, and Chapman came in to strike out Ramirez with a 100 mph pitch. He hit Brandon Guyer on the left leg and retired Ro-

berto Perez on a groundout as fans screamed in relief.

Then in the eighth, Davis singled with one out on a hard grounder down the line that Rizzo stopped with a dive – Chapman took a few seconds before heading to cover first, leaving Rizzo with no one to throw to. Davis stole second, and after Jason Kipnis fouled out, swiped third standing up.

Lindor, Cleveland’s hottest hitter, took a 101 mph pitch at the knees for a called third strike, then stood in the batter’s box for nearly 20 seconds in anger and frustration.

Bauer, his pinkie seemingly healed from a cut sustained while playing with a toy drone during the AL Championship Series, dropped to 0-2 in the Series, giving up three runs and six hits in four innings.

After a pair of relatively balmy autumn nights on the North Side, the temperature dropped to 50 degrees at game time and a 10 mph win added chill.

CHICAGO – David Ross isn’t done just yet. Same for Jon Lester and the Cubs.

Ross played a starring role as the Cubs stayed alive in the World Series, topping the Indians, 3-2, in Game 5 on Sunday. The veteran catcher, who plans to retire after the season, had a superb night behind the plate and delivered a clutch sacrifice fly in a key spot, helping the Cubs to their first World Series win at Wrigley Field in 71 years.

He even got a shoutout from Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, who dedicated “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” to Ross during the seventh-inning stretch of his final home start.

“We love you, Rossy,” Vedder said as the crowd roared. “Let’s take this show to Cleveland!”

Ross and his good buddy Lester also combined to slow Cleveland’s attack after the Indians rolled to a 7-2 victory in Game 4 on Saturday night. Lester bounced back from a so-so outing in the series opener, pitching six solid innings to improve to 3-1 with a 1.93 ERA in five playoff starts this year.

It was a familiar performance for Lester, who helped Boston win the World Series in 2007 and 2013. The lefthander was 3-0 in three career starts in the Fall Classic before dropping Game 1 against Cleveland when he was nicked for three runs in 52⁄3 innings.

Ross’ Game 5 included a pair of adventures in foul territory. He had one foul pop go off his glove near the railing of the visitor’s dugout, but first baseman Anthony Rizzo was there for a juggling catch. He collided with Rizzo on a foul popup in the fourth and held on for the out.

But Ross put together his best work when he stayed behind the plate. He did a solid job of framing close called third strikes to Brandon Guyer in the fifth and Jason Kipnis in the sixth. After Kipnis’ strikeout, Ross cut down Francisco Lindor trying to steal second for the final out.

Ross’ defensive work was particularly important with Lester’s usual struggles with runners on the basepaths.

Even in W.S., HR balls get tossed back CHICAGO – Every fan at Wrigley Field wants to catch a baseball at least once in his or her life.

Snag a foul ball? Awesome.

Grab a souvenir ball tossed by a player? Really cool.

Catch a Cubs home run ball? Dream come true.

If the opposing team – in this case, the Cleveland Indians – hits a home run, the bleacher bums want nothing to do with it.

To hear them tell it, you would be better off catching Ebola.

“It’s so disgusting,” said Anisa Ali, an otherwise pleasant 54-year-old woman from Frankfort. “It’s appalling.”

But it’s a baseball – a World Series baseball, no less. Why on Earth would you throw it away?

“Because we’re Cubs fans,” said Ann Goeglein, 56, of Orland Park. “We don’t want an Indians home run.”

For proof, look no further than Game 5 of the World Series on Sunday.

With two outs in the second inning, Indians third baseman Jose Ramirez clobbered a pitch a half-dozen rows into the left-field bleachers.

About three seconds later, a fan angrily heaved the ball back over the wall. Cubs shortstop Addison Russell caught it on the fly. Thousands of strangers cheered in approval.

Some say the tradition of throwing back opposing home runs started with the original bleacher bums in 1969.

Others think it was during the 1970s when fans of hapless Cubs teams wanted something, anything, to applaud.

Regardless, the tradition is specific to Wrigley, and it doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon.

“They always make the announcement before the game: ‘Don’t throw things on to the field, blah-blah-blah,’ ” said Jim Dorf, 57, of Mount Prospect, as he sat in his bleacher seat in left field.

“We all laugh at it. We’re like, ‘Yeah, if we throw the ball back, they’re not going to throw us out.’ ” Peer pressure also plays a role in the tradition. Whenever an opposing home run lands in the bleachers, chants quickly follow.

Dorf started sitting in the bleachers in the 1970s. He became a full-time season ticket holder in the 1980s. During the past few decades, he has seen a little bit of everything.

“People do the ball transfer,” Dorf said. “The veterans have batting practice balls or little league balls or whatever. You hand it off and you throw that ball back, and you keep the real baseball.”

And you thought steroids were scandalous.

The next time the Cubs return to Wrigley Field, it will be April. As he does every season, Dorf will take his seat in the bleachers. If an opposing home run finds him, he will catch and release it faster than a fisherman.

“It’s pride,” Dorf said. “Throw the ball back. It’s not yours.”

Record day for Carr as Raiders top Bucs The ASSOCIATED PRESS TAMPA, Fla. – Derek Carr threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Seth Roberts with 1:45 remaining in overtime, capping a record-breaking day Sunday for the Oakland Raiders in a 30-24 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Carr threw for a franchise-record 513 yards, completing 40 of 59 passes without an interception, and the Raiders overcame an NFL-record 23 penalties for 200 yards.

Carr also threw touchdowns to offensive tackle and ex-Buc Donald Penn, Amari Cooper and Mychal Rivera as the Raiders (6-2) improved to 5-0 on the road.

Jameis Winston threw for 180 yards and two touchdowns for the Bucs (3-4).

REDSKINS 27, BENGALS 27: In London, England, Washington and Cincinnati played to the second NFL tie game in seven days, the first time there have been two draws in a season since 1997.

The sold-out crowd of 84,000 at Wembley Stadium left deflated and even puzzled as the regulation-time shootout between Kirk Cousins and Andy Dalton turned into an overtime comedy of errors.

Washington (4-3-1) appeared to have the game won with 2:13 left in overtime, but Dustin Hopkins hooked his 34-yard field goal attempt wide left.

The Redskins got the ball back with 1:11 remaining when Dalton fumbled at the Bengals’ 47 on a quarterback sneak. Cousins couldn’t connect downfield and tossed his final desperate pass tamely into the sideline to preserve the draw. Cincinnati is 3-4-1.

FALCONS 33, PACKERS 32: At Atlanta, Matt Ryan threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Mohamed Sanu with 31 seconds remaining, rallying the Falcons.

The Falcons (5-3) snapped a twogame losing streak, driving 75 yards for the winning score after Aaron Rodgers put the Packers (4-3) ahead with his fourth TD pass of the game.

With Julio Jones shut down in the second half, Ryan turned to Sanu to bail out Atlanta. He caught five passes for 50 yards on the final possession, the last a touchdown pass in the back of the end zone after he lined up in the slot and got matched against linebacker Jake Ryan.

BRONCOS 27, CHARGERS 19: At Denver, the Broncos took turns picking off and pummeling Philip Rivers.

PATRIOTS 41, BILLS 25: At Orchard Park, New York, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady asserted his on-field ownership of the Bills again, matching an NFL record in beating them for the 26th time.

Brady went 22 of 33 for 315 yards and threw four touchdowns. He improved to 26-3 against Buffalo, and matched a record set by Brett Favre, who went 26-9 against Detroit.

The Patriots (7-1) have won four straight since Brady returned after opening the season serving the NFL’s four-game “Deflategate” suspension.

His absence included New England’s only blemish, a 16-0 home loss to Buffalo (4-4) on Oct. 2.

PANTHERS 30, CARDINALS 20: At Charlotte, North Carolina, Jonathan Stewart ran for 95 yards and two touchdowns, and Thomas Davis returned a fumble 46 yards for a score.

In a game reminiscent of last season’s NFC championship, a 49-15 Carolina win, the Panthers jumped to a 24-0 lead and kept the pressure on Carson Palmer and Arizona (3-4-1) all day.

Carolina (2-5), which has struggled to generate a pass rush all season,

sacked Palmer eight times – three of those by Star Lotulelei – and forced two turnovers. The Panthers also limited running back David Johnson to 24 yards rushing.

CHIEFS 30, COLTS 14: At Indianapolis, Nick Foles threw two touchdown passes in relief of the injured Alex Smith.

It was a rough game for the Chiefs (5-2), who lost Smith twice after hits to the head and finished with Charcandrick West as their only healthy running back.

Andrew Luck finished 19 of 35 with 210 yards, two touchdowns, one interception and one fumble lost for the Colts (3-5).

TEXANS 20, LIONS 13: At Houston, Brock Osweiler bounced back from an ugly performance by throwing for 186 yards and a touchdown to help the Texans remain perfect at home. Osweiler has struggled in his first season in Houston, but has been better at home where he’s thrown eight of his nine touchdown passes.

The Texans (5-3) have lost all of their road games, including a 27-9 loss to Denver on Monday, but they’ve had no such trouble in Houston.

Matthew Stafford threw for 240 yards and a touchdown for Detroit (44), which had a three-game winning streak snapped.

JETS 31, BROWNS 28: At Cleveland, Matt Forte ran for 82 yards and a pair of second-half touchdowns, helping the Jets rally to a second straight victory.

Ryan Fitzpatrick shook off an ugly first half to throw for 222 yards and a touchdown while leading the Jets (3-5) on three long scoring drives after spotting the Browns (0-8) a 13-point lead.

Josh McCown passed for 341 yards with two touchdowns to Andrew Hawkins and two interceptions in his return to the lineup from a broken collarbone.

COWBOYS 29, EAGLES 23: At Arlington, Texas, Dak Prescott threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Jason Witten in overtime, giving the Dallas Cowboys their sixth straight win with a victory Sunday night over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Prescott rallied the Cowboys with a late tying touchdown pass to Dez Bryant and won the rookie quarterback duel with Carson Wentz. Dallas (6-1) took a two-game division lead after rallying from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter.

Wentz had the Eagles (4-3) in position for a win with another efficient performance. But he couldn’t move Philadelphia late in regulation with the game tied.

LAKE FOREST – Sam Bradford was rolling along with the Minnesota Vikings right until he got squashed by his former team last week.

Then again, at least he was playing.

It’s been a while since the Bears’ Jay Cutler could say that.

Bradford tries to shake off a six-sack outing in the Vikings’ first loss when Minnesota meets the returning Cutler and the struggling Bears on Monday night.

Things couldn’t have gone much worse for Bradford and the Vikings (51) in a 21-10 defeat to Philadelphia that seemed to expose their shortcomings and lay out a blueprint for the rest of the league.

“I think we just realized that we’ve got a lot of work to do, but when you look at the film and you look at the things, the mistakes that we made on Sunday, they’re all fixable,” Bradford said.

“A lot of them were just mental mistakes. They’re things that we have done correctly the previous five weeks and just failed to execute or failed to do them correctly on Sunday. So, we’ve just got to get back on track and go out there and be the offense we know we can be.”

The Eagles disguised their blitzes and had their way with the offensive line. It all added up to a rough outing for Bradford .

Besides the six sacks, he absorbed 12 hits, fumbled four times and lost two of them. He also threw an interception.

The Bears (1-6), meanwhile, have struggled through injuries and poor play on offense and defense in their worst start since the 2000 team dropped seven of its first eight. For Cutler, it hasn’t been easy to watch.

“It’s hard when you’re hurt and not playing, getting back in the mix,” he said. “You just got to keep fighting through it.

“Nothing lasts forever. And I think everyone in the locker room knows that. There’s some talent in the locker room. There’s a lot of guys banged up that hopefully we get back soon. You just got to keep playing football. That’s all we can do.”

They are getting Cutler back from a five-game absence because of a sprained right thumb.

“We’ve been taking PKs at practice for a couple of weeks now,” coach John Ross said. “We had an idea of who was comfortable, where they go, what type of shots they take, and we narrowed it down last night.”

The Huskies shot first in the shootout as Allie Ingham scored, and Allison Abbe of the Cardinals was stopped by MacKenzie Lee. Taylor Saver and Natalie Yass both scored for NIU, as did Lorina White and Monica Padilla for Ball State.

Natalia Pena was next up for NIU, and she was stopped by Cardinals goalkeeper Alyssa Heintschel, with Paula Guerrero scoring for Ball State to tie the shootout. Haley Cummings put the pressure on Ball State by scoring, and Lee came up huge again by stopping Yela Ziswiler, clinching the win for NIU. “MacKenzie plays like a starting goalie,” Ross said. “It’s just taken her a little bit of time to get more and more comfortable, but we know she can play, and she’s a really good goalie.”

Miami tops NIU in battle of MAC unbeatens: The NIU volleyball team (19-5,

Both Mary Grace Kelly and Taylor Krage registered double figures in kills, led by Kelly’s 11.

As a team, NIU outblocked the RedHawks, 6-5, and committed one less attacking error, 15-14, while Miami totaled 52 kills to the Huskies’ 44.

“It was fun to play that match. Yes, we were on the wrong side of it, but I thought it was fun to be a part of that,” coach Ray Gooden said. “I thought we were doing some good things, playing some good volleyball. They were just a couple steps ahead at a couple critical times, and that’s really the difference. I think it’s a good learning thing for our group.”

One group received standard treatments with hormones or medicines. The other group received an intrauterine device (IUD) that releases a hormone inside the uterus. The IUD, sold under the brand name Mirena, is a type of birth control. Many women using the hormonal IUD for birth control have found it reduces menstrual bleeding.

The study found women assigned to treatment with the IUD: • Had a significant reduction in symptoms over six months.

• Reported a bigger reduction in symptoms than those in the usual treatment group.

• Continued to have improved symptoms for at least two years.

• Reported improvements in: – practical difficulties – social and family life – work and daily routine – psychological and physical health One study, even a large and carefully conducted study like this one, rarely changes practice overnight. But I’m cautiously optimistic this new approach – hormonal IUDs – could become a new treatment option to improve the lives of women with menorrhagia.

Dear Dr. K: I bleed very heavily during my menstrual periods. Is there anything that can be done about this? Or do I just have to put up with the discomfort and inconvenience every month?

Dear Reader: Excessive menstrual bleeding (the medical term is menorrhagia) is a common problem. In my experience, a few primary-care doctors tell their patients just to “live with it.” Not surprisingly, obstetrician/gynecologists are more likely to recognize excessive menstrual bleeding as a problem that needs treatment.

Many women take medication or hormones or have surgery for this problem.

But a recent study suggests an implantable device also may be able to help control excessive menstrual bleeding.

“Excessive blood flow” can be tricky to define since actual measurement is difficult. Your menstrual bleeding might be excessive if you: • Have to change a pad every hour for at least three hours; • Have to get up during the night to change a pad; • Pass large clots; • Develop anemia from blood loss.

It’s also important to consider the impact of heavy menstrual bleeding on your life. You may have menorrhagia if heavy bleeding impairs your social, physical or emotional life.

Current treatment options include taking hormones to help regulate bleeding. Medications also are available. One drug encourages blood to clot; another blocks production of a substance involved in menstrual bleeding. Another option is surgery to remove the lining of the uterus or the uterus itself (hysterectomy). Many women try multiple treatments in search of one that works.

DEAR ABBY My 34-year-old daughter, “MarJeanne tha,” is a single Phillips mom. I adore my granddaughter.

Martha needs me to give her $500 a month, plus cover emergencies (new tires, hospital bills for baby, etc.) to get by. She has said repeatedly she wants to have another baby before she’s 35.

Abby, it’s a financial burden to help her as much as we have. My husband (her stepdad) believes, along with me, we should help until her finances improve. Martha is awash in student debt and has a low-paying job. She lives 12 hours away, so we have to fly out to see them, which means we don’t see them often.

My question: How can I tell her having a second baby when she can’t support the first is something I can’t handle financially? I am becoming resentful. Our retirement has been dismal because all our money is going to her.

My daughter has a hair-trigger temper and would use access to my granddaughter as leverage to keep the money coming. I’m appalled she’s in this position and upset I have to pay for her choices. – Appalled In Ohio Dear Appalled: You don’t have to pay for your daughter’s choices. Tell Martha as an adult it is her responsibility – not yours – to provide for herself and her child, and if she becomes pregnant before her finances improve to the point she’s self-supporting, not to expect one more penny from you.

Please consider starting to reduce the amount you give her and set a deadline beyond which you no longer will supplement her income. Martha may need to find a second job, but that’s better than you spending all your retirement money shouldering her responsibilities.

Expect her to be angry. If she threatens to blackmail you with access to your grandchild, tell her the person she’ll be punishing is the little one, not you, and stick to your guns.

Dear Abby: My husband has bought different pieces of equipment over the years. He recently bought a small tractor he’s very proud of and enjoys using around our property. He also has bought a large trailer he often uses to haul his equipment and other things.

His problem is friends who seem to think they can help themselves to his stuff. They actually have the audacity to say, “I may borrow your tractor, trailer, etc., tomorrow.” I find this to be rude in that they are not asking – they are telling him they will.

I told him to say he doesn’t loan his equipment out, but he can’t seem to be able to say that. Today, we will look at the declarer-play in this deal. Tomorrow, we will turn to the defenders. South is in five diamonds. How should he plan the play after West cashes two spade tricks, then shifts to a heart?

The bidding was complicated.

North had to pass on the first round because he had no five-card suit and was too short in hearts for a takeout double. North’s second-round twospade cue-bid showed a strong hand: at least a good 12 points opposite South’s balancing double. North’s three-spade cue-bid was an unsuccessful attempt to get into three no-trump.

To make the contract, South had to play the trump suit without loss.

Who had the diamond queen?

Declarer counted up the high-card points. He had 15, and dummy held 13. That left only 12 outstanding, but since West had opened the bidding, he had to have the diamond queen.

South played a diamond to his king at trick four, then ran the diamond jack through West. When that won, declarer drew the last trump and claimed.
