Looking at local election races The sample ballot for Nov. 8 published in the Daily Chronicle last week is an interesting study in democracy at the local level.

Most of us wonder which County Board district is ours so we can know which board candidates will be on the ballot at our polling place.

Quick now – without checking the website – what district are you in and who is your local County Board member?

Something quite evident is the lack of choices – there’s no competition in 12 of the 15 County Board races and no one running against the incumbent circuit clerk or coroner. Also, in the state senate, state representative or congressional elections no one challenged the incumbents (except in the 14th Congressional District, where incumbent Republican Rep. Randy Hultgren faces Democrat Jim Walz).

If you want to find out what your ballot will look like on Election Day, you can visit dekalb. il.electionconsole.com/voter-lookup.php and type in your name and birthdate to see.

Why we need partisan County Board members is a mystery to me. The balance on the County Board seems to change every two or four years. Right now, Democrats have a 13to-11 majority, and by the looks of the ballot they will retain control for the next two years at least.

Being on the County Board doesn’t pay much – most members earn $83 a meeting, capped at four meetings a month, plus 50 cents a mile for driving to and from the county’s Sycamore government center.

The only contested countywide races are for state’s attorney and circuit judge, and only the state’s attorney race is hotly contested.

DEKALB COUNTY LIFE Barry Schrader Four judges also face retention, where voters are asked to answer yes or no to the question of whether they should remain in office. I guess the only reason you would vote against a judge is if he or she ruled against you or a close friend or relative in a case before the court.

I would wager that 95 out of 100 voters could not tell me who Robert “Bob” Pilmer is, but there he is on the list of judges seeking retention, along with Thomas Doherty, Timothy McCann and Robbin Stuckert.

There is a proposed constitutional amendment that would require the state to use tax money designated for transportation only for that purpose, and not let it be transferred to other accounts as is often the case now. But do we want that in our Constitution? I’ll have to study that one further and try to ignore all the TV ads telling me how to vote.

Next week let’s look at the DeKalb and Sycamore mayoral races coming up in April 2017 and find out how much each mayor makes, just in case you might like to run. I’ve heard several names of people who may be in the races in the two cities. But there will most likely be more, especially in DeKalb.

WASHINGTON – A next-generation artificial hand is letting two amputees tell the difference between a soft or firm touch – like holding a child without squeezing too tightly. It’s another step toward developing prosthetics that can feel.

Implanted electrodes allowed the men to feel the same intensity of pressure in the artificial hand as they could in their other hand, scientists at Case Western Reserve University

reported Wednesday.

To Keith Vonderhuevel, testing the experimental device meant finally cradling his 2-year-old granddaughter without first taking off his artificial hand for fear of hurting her.

“Just to be able to touch and feel, it’s an amazing thing,” said Vonderhuevel, of Sidney, Ohio, who lost his right arm below the elbow 11 years ago in a job accident. “It feels like a light pressure. The harder I squeeze, the stronger that pressure gets.”

55th annual Pumpkin Festival begins in Sycamore

SYCAMORE – From sugary pumpkins made of frosting on the ceremonial cake to displays of creativity and imagination on the courthouse lawn, Wednesday evening was all about pumpkins in Sycamore.

The 55th annual Sycamore Pumpkin Festival commenced as people submitted entries in the pumpkin decorating contest and grabbed a slice of the 8-by-8 foot cake donated by Hy-Vee for the cake-cutting ceremony.

Festivities will continue through Sunday, including a pie eating contest, a fireworks display, and teen and kiddie carnivals. A full list of events and times can be found at sycamorepumpkinfestival.com.

Jordyn Ziegler, 4, made her pumpkin entry for the TV, Nursery Rhyme or Current News Event category to look like the Fluttershy character from “My Little Pony.” There are 31 categories, such as Happy and Fancy, Parade of Pumpkins, or Weird, Ugly and Scary.

“She’s on TV, and I love little ponies,” Jordyn said.

Jordyn’s mother, Nicole Ziegler, said she and her husband are both from Sycamore, and the pumpkin decorating contest is just one of their favorite activities. She said they also will attend the craft show and the parade.

“I think it’s fun because we grew up doing it, and now we get to bring our children back to do it,” she said.

City Manager Brian Gregory said the cold, rainy weather was not much of a deterrent to Wednesday’s festivities.

“It’s just a testament to our tradition as a community when you see people standing 10 deep in line for cake given that it’s rained all day and it’s still 40 degrees and raining, and yet we still have quite a crowd out here,” he said.

Christel Springmire, a member of the Pumpkin Festival Committee, said the festival brings together people from all different places.

“It’s fun for kids who grew up here,” she said. “Well, they’re not kids anymore; they’re grown-ups. They come

Springmire said her job on the committee is to give permits to the various local nonprofit vendors that set up throughout the week. This year, about 30 vendors, such as the Midwest Museum of Natural History, the Sycamore History Museum and Tails Humane Society, are participating.

“I really appreciate that all the non-for-profits get to benefit from the event,” she said. “It’s not a business event; it’s a fun, community volunteer event.”

Sycamore police Chief Glenn Theriault said his favorite part of the festival is the parade, but there are plenty of other things to enjoy leading up to it.

“To have these events that all build and focus on an aspect of the community is really neat,” he said. “There’s truly something for everyone.”

4 teens face charges after guns stolen Police have recovered 2 of 6 stolen firearms

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Four teenagers face felony burglary charges in connection with six guns stolen in March from a farm building south of DeKalb.

Jarrett M. Butler, 18, of the 2400 block of Glen Circle West, Sycamore, and Tyler J. Moore, 19, of the 7500 block of McGirr Road, Waterman, were charged with residential bur-

glary. If convicted of the Class 1 felony, they could be sentenced to four to 15 years in prison. Two juveniles also were arrested and charged with residential burglary in connection with the stolen weapons, according to a news release from t h e D e K a l b C o u n t y Jarrett M. Sheriff’s Office.

Butler A homeowner reported a burglary March 24 at the farm building at 15299 S. First St., south of DeKalb. Three rifles, two shotguns and a handgun were stolen during the burglary.

After an investigation by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, Butler, Moore and two minors were charged with residential burglary, Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan said. The two juveniles are not being named because of their age.

The weapons were Tyler J. taken from an office in Moore a farm building on the property, he said. Two of the weapons have since be recovered by investigators, Sullivan said.

A judge issued warrants Monday for Butler and Moore. Butler was re-

leased Wednesday on a $5,000 recognizance bond. Moore was released Tuesday on a $5,000 recognizance bond.

Moore is due in court for a preliminary hearing Dec. 16. Butler is due in court for a preliminary hearing Dec. 9, according to court records.

Sullivan said investigators are hoping tips from the public will help them recover the other missing firearms.

Anyone with information about the weapons is asked to call DeKalb County Crime Stoppers at 815-895-3272. Callers do not have to give their names.

Crime Stoppers will pay a cash reward of up to $1,000; callers can remain anonymous.

Crews fight house fire in Sycamore

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A fire Wednesday evening damaged a Sycamore home that residents were remodeling.

Firefighters were called to 974 W. State St., Sycamore, on Wednesday evening after a neighbor reported seeing smoke. When crews arrived, smoke could be seen coming from the attic of the white, two-story home, Sycamore Fire Chief Pete Polarek said.

The residents were already outside of the home, along with their two Chihuahuas, Smooch and Sandy, by the time firefighters arrived at the house.

No injuries were reported.

Homeowner Larry Smith, 61, who lived there with his wife, Debbie, and son, Matt, said they had been remodeling the home. Two weeks ago they had finished the roof and put up new windows, he said. Smith said he didn’t know what caused the fire or where the family would stay the night. Damage from the fire, smoke and water left the home uninhabitable.

Smith said he had lived in the home since 1986 or 1987.

A portion of State Street was shut down for several hours while firefighters were at the scene.

Firefighters still were working to determine the cause of the fire Wednesday night. Polarek said a damage estimate wasn’t immediately available.

MARY D. HAINES

Born: February 16, 1928 Died: October 22, 2016

Mary D. Haines, 88, of DeKalb, Illinois, died Saturday, October 22, 2016, at her home in DeKalb.

Born February 16, 1928, in Highwood, Illinois, Mary was the daughter of Frank and Alice (Castellari) Dinelli. Mary held many jobs from her early teens through her eighties. A realtor in Deerfield for many years, she also managed the Golf Shop at Onwentsia Country Club, and was Admissions Coordinator at Highland Park Health Center. Mary loved antiques, conducted estate sales, and worked at the ORT and Glen Cote Thrift Stores. She liked to golf, knitted beautiful gifts for family and friends, and was a lifelong bridge player.

Cooking was a joy for her, and was renowned for her biscotti and Leo Party green beans.

She is survived by her son, Michael (Lana) Haines of Kingston; daughter-in-law, Dede Haines of Cortland; four grandchildren, Amanda Yarusso, Zachary (Megan) Haines, Jeremiah (Jess) Haines, and Stephanie Haines; four great-granddaughters, Sofia, Stella, Rosabella, and Eloise; two sisters, Nancy (Don) Prill and Lillian Francis; one brother, Jimmy; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Robbie; son, Gary; two brothers, Joey and Jerry; and one sister, Eva. A Celebration of a Life Long Lived will be held at the Highwood Bocce Club, 440 Bank Lane, Highwood, IL, on Sunday, October 30, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.

DONNA M. PESUT Born: April 22, 1928 Died: October 25, 2016

Donna M. Pesut, age 88 of Malta, IL, and formerly of DeKalb, IL, died on Tuesday October 25, 2016 in her daughter’s residence in Malta, IL. Donna was born on April 22, 1928 in DeKalb, IL, and was the daughter of Joseph A. and Mary

(Horan) George.

Donna was married to the late George D. Pesut on May 6, 1950 at St. Mary Catholic Church in DeKalb, he preceded her in death on November 17, 1981.

Donna worked at N.I.U in the Food Service Department for many years. She has lived in DeKalb all her life, until recently living in Malta.

Donna was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in DeKalb, where she was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America #996. Donna graduated from the class of 1946 at Our Lady of Angels Academy in Clinton, IA.

Burial will follow in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in DeKalb.

Visitation will be held on Friday October 28, 2016 at 9:30am till the time of the service in the church.

Rockford man faces felony charges after police chase

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A Rockford man who sped away from police in a stolen car during a traffic stop in August remained in jail Thursday on $25,000 bond after being arrested on a warrant.

Larue M. Johnson, 43, of 1516 W. State St., Rockford, was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, aggravated fleeing from police and driving with a suspended license. If convicted of possession of a stolen vehicle, a Class 2 felony, he could be sentenced to three to seven years in prison.

DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to stop Johnson on Aug. 20 near the Mobile station in Cortland after the vehicle he was driving was reported as borrowed and not returned from Machesney Park six days earlier, according to a police synopsis contained in court documents.

When deputies tried to pull the driv-

er over, the driver pulled to the side of the road near Somonauk Road and Maple Avenue in Cortland. Instead of stopping, the driver hit the gas and led police on a brief chase. When the driver hit speeds of more than 90 mph in a 45 mph zone amid heavy traffic, deputies stopped the chase, according to court documents.

The deputies lost sight of the vehicle, but the investigation didn’t end there, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan said. Deputies contacted the vehicle owner and obtained surveillance video from the gas station to identify the driver and issued a warrant for Johnson’s arrest, according to court records.

Judge Philip Montgomery set Johnson’s bond at $25,000 Wednesday, noting that the unemployed man was homeless, had an extensive criminal history and had a record of not showing up for court.

Johnson is next due in court Nov. 8.

It reads “Crusoe and his pets” underneath the picture, and the letters of the alphabet are around the rim. It’s marked “B.P. Co.” on the back. What can you tell me about this plate?

A: Plates like yours with a central picture surrounded by the alphabet are called ABC plates. They were used during Victorian times to teach children the alphabet while they were eating. Now they are popular collectors’ items. ABC plates have been made in porcelain, glass and metal.

Your plate is part of a series of Robinson Crusoe plates made by Brownhills Pottery Co. It was in business in Tunstall, Staffordshire, England, from 1872 to 1896. Plates from this popular series sell for $50 to $150 each. *** Q: I would like to know the worth of a McCoy planter I have. It’s a spinning wheel with a cat sitting on a locked box which has the letters “R S” on it. The planter is 6 1/2 high and 7 inches wide and has two holes for plants. It’s orange in color.

A: McCoy pottery was made in Roseville, Ohio, from the early 1900s until 1990.

Spinning wheel planters were first made in 1953. The complete planter has a dog, standing on his hind legs and straining at his leash to get at the cat. The dog’s leash is fastened to a loophole near the left side of the planter. We’ve seen a version with a black Scottie dog and white cat, but usually the dog is white with a brown spot on his back and the cat is the same orangebrown color as the spinning wheel. Your planter seems to be missing the dog and leash, so the value is less than $20. *** Tip: Don’t store costume jewelry in the bathroom. The moisture will damage the

Halloweeniana is now one of the major holiday collecting categories, second only to Christmas. Jack-o’-lanterns, figural candy containers of papier-mache, and crepe paper black cats and skeletons are the oldest. Scarecrows, witches, bats, spiders, spider webs, trick-or-treat bags and zombies are more recent and easier to find. An old orange paper dress with black cats and political symbols from a 1980s presidential election year is one of the more unusual collectibles. Another is a 15-year-old dangling rhinestone skeleton pin to wear to parties. A rare vintage Halloween clockwork figure sold for $4,575 at a Morphy auction in July 2016.

The16-inch-high black cat made of clothcovered papier-mache is holding a jack-o’-lantern. Its head nods and its eyes move from side to side. Look for bargain Halloween decorations at house sales and flea markets, and vintage rarities at auctions and shops. Save some of this year’s unusual items. *** Q: I have my grandfather’s black hat.

The name in the hat is “Sheldon & Co., London.” It was in a hat box that says “Mallory Hats, Fifth Ave., New York, N.Y.” I think he had the hat when he was a member of the Shriners. Can you give me any information?

A: Both Sheldon & Co. and Mallory were hat makers listed in the 1908 “American Hatter.” G.W. Sheldon & Co. was a maker of felt in 1823. It was the first hat maker in the U.S. and was one of the largest by the early 1900s. The name became E.A. Mallory & Sons after his son joined the firm. It became a division of the John B. Stetson Hat Co. in 1946. Production of Mallory hats ceased by 1965. Maybe Mallory sold hats by other makers, or maybe the hat was put

in the wrong box by the owner. Vintage top hats in great shape sell for about $100.

Twentieth-century hat boxes with good names or graphics are $50 to $75 retail. *** Q: I have a vintage toilet tissue roll, Waldorf brand, in its original wrapping paper, in excellent condition. It was put in storage along with the whole household in 1943 when the family moved out of state.

I purchased the estate many years ago. I gave one to our local historical society to be displayed in the museum. Does it have much value?

A: Toilet tissue was first made in China for the Emperor’s use in the 1391. It was first made in the United States in 1857 and sold in packs of single sheets. The first toilet paper rolls were made by Scott Paper Co. in 1890. Waldorf toilet tissue was made in 1902 for the Waldorf Hotel. It was the world’s best-selling brand in the early 1900s. Scott continued to produce Waldorf toilet paper for several years. We found it pictured in a 1930s ad. Scott Paper Co. was bought by Kimberly-Clark in 1995.

The value of a vintage roll of Waldorf toilet tissue, about $35-$40. *** Q: I have been collecting bookmarks since I was in high school. I have some from the Australian Olympics, picture bookmarks of woven ribbon from the 1890s, and 50 or more that are wood, plastic, metal, knit, silver, ivory, celluloid, magnetized, gripping, clip on, advertising etc. With e-books on the rise, I am afraid bookmark collecting will disappear. What do you think?

A: Bookmarks are flat, lightweight, easy to pack and ship and inexpensive.

They are also little pieces of history and handcraft. Although there is little written about them, collectors like them. Many from the 1800s are still available and the size and price make them easy to sell online. Many groups interested in bookmarks are online and so are listings for bookmark sales. There are plenty to be found for your collection and they can be framed in groups to make interesting pictures on a wall. *** Q: My inherited plate has a picture of Robinson Crusoe sitting in a chair with a dog and cat nearby. He’s holding a parrot.

The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, which hasn’t taken a position, questioned whether the amendment is specific enough to include spending for planning and areas of transportation besides roadways.

CHICAGO – The first question on Illinois’ ballots in the next month’s election isn’t for president or senator, but a constitutional amendment aimed at preventing transportation-related funding from being spent on other purposes.

Despite widespread bipartisan support, some opponents have begun to surface, including social service groups that think it’s unfair to protect transportation over other issues.

The proposal – the sole constitutional amendment on the ballot – seeks to protect money generated through transportation-related sources such as tolls.

Palatine man pleads no contest in teen’s 1997 slaying

PALATINE – A Palatine man has pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of first-degree reckless homicide stemming from the slaying of a teen, ending a two-decade mystery surrounding her disappearance and killing.

James P. Eaton, 39, now faces up to 40 years in prison for his role in the 1997 slaying of 14-year-old Amber Creek, the Daily Herald reported.

Assistant Racine County District Attorney Robert Repischak said Eaton was responsible for Amber’s death despite the lesser charge.

Freight train cars derail in southern Illinois; no injuries

BELLEVILLE – Authorities said several cars on a train hauling coal derailed in southern Illinois, knocking out power to hundreds and closing several roads.

No injuries were reported after the derailment, which happened shortly before 2 a.m. Wednesday in Belleville.

Bonnie Isler, who owns a beauty salon in the area, told the Belleville News-Democrat that when the train went off the tracks there were “booms of light” and “a lot of

shaking.”

The St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency said about eight coal cars of the train operated by Norfolk Southern went off the tracks. Utility crews were on the scene working to restore power, and officials said it could take a day or two to clear debris along the rail line. The cause of the derailment wasn’t yet known.

Vote delayed on new 4-year contract by Chicago teachers

CHICAGO – The Chicago Teachers Union is delaying a vote by its membership on a four-year contract proposal.

The vote on the tentative contract agreement was set for Thursday and Friday; however, Vice President Jesse Sharkey said the union’s more than 20,000 members instead will begin casting votes Monday.

According to Sharkey, the CTU is sharing contract details with members, but couldn’t get a shop to distribute printed copies in time for a vote this week.

The proposed contract averted a strike that would have affected about 390,000

TUSCOLA – A husband and wife from central Illinois have won a $134 million Illinois Lottery jackpot.

Lottery officials said the Tuscola couple plans to retire after taking a one-time payment of nearly $90 million before required withholding.

Their Quick Pick ticket matched all six numbers in the Sept. 16 Mega Millions drawing. The couple did not disclose their names. They claimed the prize in the name of the Elaine Francis Trust. The couple met with financial and legal advisers and made plans to retire early from their jobs in a factory and the health care industry.

WASHINGTON – His presidential dreams increasingly in question, Donald Trump pushed his business empire to the center of his political campaign Wednesday. Taking a break from battleground states, he made the case at his newest hotel that all Americans should look to his corporate record for evidence of how well he’d run the country.

Hillary Clinton agreed, but not the way he meant it. She used campaign events in Florida to attack the GOP nominee for having “stiffed American workers,” saying he built his empire with Chinese-manufactured steel, overseas products and labor from immigrants in the country illegally.

“Donald Trump is the poster boy for everything wrong with our economy,” she told several thousand supporters in Tampa, Florida.

“He refuses to pay workers and contractors.”

Trump’s political aspirations have long been deeply intertwined with promoting his corporate goals. He announced his campaign in the gilded lobby of Trump Tower in Manhattan and has held dozens of campaign events at his own properties. His remarks at his new Washington hotel, which has struggled to fill rooms amid the controversy surrounding his presidential bid, came after a visit Tuesday to his Doral golf course outside Miami.

“Under budget and ahead of schedule. So important. We don’t hear those words so often, but you will,” said Trump, linking the hotel redevelopment – just blocks from the White House – to his promised performance as pres-

ident. “Today is a metaphor for what we can accomplish for this country.”

Although the GOP nominee focused his remarks on his political message, the event was heavy with marketing, too. Standing under glittering chandeliers, top company executives, including his daughter, touted the hotel. And after his brief speech, Trump and his family headed to the hotel’s grand lobby where they cut a wide red ribbon with golden scissors before he flew to North Carolina for what his campaign billed as an urban policy speech.

In Charlotte, Trump unveiled what he billed a “New Deal for black America” in front of a mostly white crowd. Trump, who has struggled to earn the support of minority voters, bemoaned that “too many African-Americans have been left behind” and unveiled a handful of new proposals aimed at revitalizing impoverished urban areas.

They included new tax incentives for inner cities, new micro-loans for African Americans to start companies and hire workers and reinvesting money from suspended refugee programs in inner cities.

He also wants cities to be able to seek federal disaster designations to help them rebuild infrastructure, demolish abandoned buildings and invest in law enforcement.

As Trump cut the ribbon, Clinton was slamming his business practices in Florida, a state he must win to have any chance Nov. 8. In Tampa, she was introduced by restaurateur Jose Andres, a naturalized U.S. citizen who pulled out of the Washington hotel to protest Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric. Trump and Andres are locked in litigation over the deal.

Have a fun, and safe, Halloween

Halloween is Monday, which means this weekend will be filled with ghosts and goblins running from one party to the next.

OK, maybe ghost and goblin costumes aren’t as popular as they once were, but parties are.

We’re guessing Cubs players will be a popular dress-up choice this Halloween. We suggest avoiding clown costumes, however.

We digress.

Halloween is fun. It is a time to dress up, pretend and simply have fun at all kinds of Halloween-related activities, including the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival, today’s Spooktacular in downtown DeKalb and other community events, such as costume parties and trick-or-treating. We encourage everyone to do that, whether you’re a kid or you just want to act like one.

Just remember to be smart and keep it safe.

Adhere to your community’s allotted trickor-treat time slot and remember to keep close watch to ensure your children are safe. Many DeKalb County communities have set trickor-treating hours, including DeKalb, where children may go door-to-door from 4 to 8 p.m., the most popular time slot.

These hours overlap with the afternoon rush hour. So remember to take your time getting home. And watch out for small people in costumes wandering around your neighborhood.

Many children will have on masks or face paint that will likely block some of their vision. They also will be very excited because, after all, this is a fun holiday with all the candy passed around. So parents should make sure to keep it safe.

Wear something bright, not dark. Use reflective tape. Carry a flashlight (and use it). And make sure your children know that motorists can’t see them as well as they can see cars.

For those with older children, make sure to talk with them about the right and wrong way to celebrate the holiday. Having fun is good; property damage is bad.

Enjoy yourself, make sure your family has a night to remember, but also make sure to think about keeping them safe.

And if you are attending a holiday party this weekend, don’t drink and drive. The consequences of drunken driving for yourself and others aren’t worth it.

Hats off to state mansion project The renovation of the Illinois Executive Mansion in Springfield isn’t on the same scale as Jackie Kennedy’s renovation of the White House, but the reasons – and the overall plan – have some parallels.

The mansion is old, run-down, even dangerous in places, but it should be a showpiece for visitors to the state’s Capitol and sites tied to Abraham Lincoln and Frank Lloyd Wright. The governor and family shouldn’t be expected to live among peeling paint and broken banisters.

The basement mold has been erased and the leaky roof replaced, but the state should be embarrassed to have such a ramshackle building in plain sight.

Such was the case with the White House when the Kennedys entered in 1961. In Illinois, first lady Diane Rauner has devised a private fundraising effort to pay for the $15 million renovation that will open the governor’s mansion to visitors

for years to come. About $4.5 million has been raised, with $1 million of that coming from the Rauners.

Last week, the state announced the Rauners would move to the Illinois State Fairgrounds for the 18-month duration of the renovation, living in a house provided for the fair’s executive director. The mansion will close to public tours in January.

“When it reopens, the Illinois Executive Mansion will feature art exhibits that showcase Illinois artists, and an educational visitors center for school groups, along with some much-needed updating,” Diana Rauner said in a statement.

Work on the 161-year-old home at 410 E. Jackson St. will include updates to the private residence, mechanical systems upgrades, landscape and grounds improvements, security enhancements and making the home accessible to people with disabilities.

The Rauners have said they want the work done before the state’s bicentennial in 2018. The privately funded renovation work will be done in conjunction with the Illinois Capital Development Board, which oversees state building projects.

If the project came at the expense of state money, it’s doubtful either Rauner (Diana is a Democrat, Bruce a Republican) would argue the need to spend crucial dollars on a building rather than on people. Diane Rauner has said the private fundraising will provide the means to get the work done without tapping into money meant for education, the poor or health care.

Both Rauners seem to thrive on fighting through people who say no.

Let’s hope their dedication to this cause has a big payoff for the people of Illinois.

Why Obama won’t listen on Obamacare One of President Barack Obama’s cherished conceits is that disagreement with him can have no rational basis, and it was the theme of his most recent speech in defense of his health care law.

Only “ideology” and “politics” are keeping Republicans from working with him to expand Obamacare’s reach. He himself is, as always in his self-portraits, the picture of reasonableness, willing to accept Republicans’ ideas if only they would operate in good faith instead of holding “60-something repeal votes.”

Obamacare has substantially increased the number of Americans who have health insurance, as the president boasted. Some of his other claims – notably, “This law has actually slowed down the pace of health care inflation” – are more dubious.

But the core problem with his speech was not that he overestimated the merits of Obamacare (as much as I believe that he did). Nor was it the partisan silliness in which the president sometimes indulged. It’s that he refused to acknowledge that conservatives have reasonable disagreements

Obama believes that only comprehensive insurance policies are real insurance. Conservatives generally believe, by contrast, that people should be free to buy cheaper policies that protect them only from financial catastrophes arising from their health needs.

It’s a difference that leads to others. Obama said that people who are having trouble buying insurance on Obamacare’s exchanges should receive more generous subsidies. The conservative alternative – relax the regulations that make the insurance unaffordable for them – is unacceptable to him because it would be a retreat from comprehensiveness.

All of the president’s shows of open-mindedness include similar caveats. He noted that Obamacare al-

lowed state experimentation. But that experimentation is allowed to proceed only if the experiments promise to end with at least as many people having coverage that is at least as comprehensive as what Obamacare delivers. A policy that resulted in more people having catastrophic coverage wouldn’t qualify.

Obama claims that Republicans have offered no alternatives to the health care law. They have, in fact, outlined their own far-ranging plans for health policy. But it’s true that they have not offered alternative ways to get just as many people covered as comprehensively as Obamacare does.

If you start with Obama’s assumptions about what the goals of health policy should be, then it is true that there is no reasonable basis for rejecting his policies. But those assumptions are not self-evidently correct.

A lot of conservatives want a less regulation-heavy system, where everyone has access to relatively cheap catastrophic policies. Obama’s speech offered no reasons for them to stop wanting that or trying to do what they can to move health policy in that

direction.

This doesn’t mean that Republicans should insist on making no changes to health policy that fall short of replacing Obamacare. And, in fact, they have not insisted on that.

They have advanced legislation to fix what they see as specific problems with the law, such as its medical-device tax and its prohibition on some people’s existing health policies. But of course conservatives are not going to agree to changes to the law that move the health care system further away from what we want.

Obama resorted to a number of ill-considered analogies in making his pitch. One likened Obamacare to a “starter home”: “It’s a lot better than not having a home, but you hope that over time you make some improvements.”

Sometimes, however, you decide that you want a different kind of home altogether, and work until you can move there.

In reality, the politicians in Springfield (with apologies to our state Sen. Tim Bivins, Rep. Tom Demmer and others who have consistently been a voice for good government) have conducted “fund sweeps” that have robbed transportation of hundreds of millions of dollars and “diversions” (granted there are good diversions, such as those for the state police, and bad diversions, such as to the general fund) that have taken billions of dollars away from transportation funds over the years.

This amendment will put the force of the Illinois Constitution squarely in the way of “fund sweeps” and put a spotlight on the proper use of diversions.

The choice is yours. Vote on Nov. 8.

To the Editor: Make no mistake, people vote because of one or both of these reasons: 1. They want something, or 2. They want others to behave a certain way.

Frankly, I am tired of the overreach of either one.

About 75 percent of all of us think the country is going in the wrong direction. That percentage is large enough to cover every belief system. I think it is because the majority is also tired of that overreach.

How our forefathers cobbled together a group of ideas to frame our country is amazing. Most of us have enjoyed the fruits of those ideas, and we are envied by the world to the point of being hated by some.

Ever wonder how our forefathers would do with 24-hour instant news cycles, slick marketing psychology, propaganda machines and professional politicos? Even

worse today is the cabal of international financiers, multinational corporations, media giants, political ruling class hopefuls and the megarich.

The game has changed from city-state kingdoms of old to present-day countries and now to “whole-world monopoly.” The ripe side effect of globalization is homogenization, cultures are expected to be homogenized but countries, I think not!

The stakes of voting or not voting are huge. Vote carefully; if you have someone in your family or community not behaving now, how will you do with world behavior?

Jackboots have been tried before, for a while, lest you forgot. Don’t worry about voting because you want something, homogenization has already been taking care of that.

Arrieta deals, Cubs top Indians to even Series at 1

CLEVELAND – Jake Arrieta made a teasing try at history, Kyle Schwarber drove in two runs and the Cubs brushed off a shutout to even the World Series with their first Fall Classic win in 71 years, 5-1 over the Cleveland Indians in Game 2 on Wednesday night.

Arrieta carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, briefly invoking Don Larsen’s name, before the Indians touched him for two hits and a run. However, the right-hander helped give the Cubs just what it needed – a split at Progressive Field – before the Cubs return to their Wrigley Field den for the next three games starting Friday night.

The Cubs hadn’t won in the Series since beating Detroit, 8-7, in 1945 to force Game 7.

The free-swinging Schwarber, who made it back for the Cubs’ long-awaited Series return after missing most of the season with an injured left knee, hit an RBI single in the third off Cleveland’s Trevor Bauer and had another in the Cubs’ three-run fifth – highlighted by Ben Zobrist’s run-scoring triple.

Even the presence of star LeBron James and the NBA champion Cavaliers, sporting their new rings, couldn’t stop the Indians from losing for the first time in six home games this postseason.

And Cleveland manager Terry Francona’s magical touch in October finally fizzled as he dropped to 9-1 in Series games.

With rain in the forecast, Major League Baseball moved the first pitch up an hour in hopes of avoiding delays or a postponement.

It turned out to be a good call as the game went off without a hitch and ended after more than four hours as light rain was beginning to fall.

Arrieta and the Cubs provided the only storm.

The bearded 30-year-old coasted through five innings without allowing a hit, the first pitcher to get that deep in a Series game with a no-hitter since David Cone of the New York Yankees in 1998.

For a brief period, Arrieta looked as

The drone accident has brought attention to the quirky Bauer, and one Cubs fan tried to rattle the right-hander by sending a smaller version of the remote-controlled, flying object that cut him.

Bauer posted a photo of it on Twitter, saying “I see the @Cubs fans love me!

DeKALB – Before DeKalb senior defensive end Dwayne Lacey walked out for senior night with his mother, Mary Windham, and John Walker last week, he had to scribble on a notecard his relationship with them for the announcer.

For Walker, Lacey didn’t quite know what to put.

He settled on godfather.

While he isn’t Lacey’s godfather, Walker’s relationship with the Barbs’ star defensive player has been as complex as it’s been important. It’s part friend, part coach and part father.

“A mom can only do so much with a male son,” said Lacey, 17. “I kind of flocked to him. I would always come to him with little things. As he opened up his arms, it progressed farther than coaching.”

Lacey has no memory of his biological father. Dwayne Lacey Sr. died Aug. 30, 2002, in Chicago because of the effects of a car crash that occurred Aug. 9, two days after Dwayne turned 3. Two years later, Mary and her three boys – Dwayne, his older brother, Andre, and younger brother, Donovan – moved to DeKalb.

For years, he lived without a father figure. He admits that there were times during elementary school that it was difficult to see friends that had such a luxury and not get a little envious.

“It hit me that everyone had a father and they can do the father things,” Lacey said. “I always found myself hidden because I didn’t have that. I would find myself shy away from conversation from it because I didn’t want to talk about it. I didn’t want people to ask. I would always try and avoid it. It was a harsh reality I had to come to.”

When he went to a basketball practice when he was in sixth grade, however, Lacey’s life changed.

Walker, now 40, was coaching a youth basketball team when Lacey showed up with current DeKalb quarterback Derek Kyler. In hindsight, Walker, a UPS deliveryman, said he previously delivered packages to Mary but always assumed Dwayne, who was a mountain of a boy, was older than the teams he coached.

Walker, who moved to the area from Indianapolis in 1997, said what made Lacey different from the other players was how much he saw himself in the young boy. For the next seven years, the relationship gradually evolved into a fa-

I’m not known for that. I’m Coach Walker. I’m not known for that. ... I just stepped back (at senior night) and I was looking at Dwayne, this big kid asked me to walk out with him and tears came out and I couldn’t stop. People were seeing it and I was thinking, dang it!”

For those in the crowd that didn’t know the family and Walker, they assumed Lacey had his godfather on his left arm.

When asked how he would describe Lacey to somebody unaware of their relationship, Walker’s response is brief but comes with an underlying waver in his voice. It’s a soft voice that’s trying to hold back emotion as best as it can.

“That’s one of my sons.”

The men’s basketball team is coming off its best season in two decades, and the women’s team is entering its second season under coach Lisa Carlsen and the optimistic Frazier said Huskies basketball is heading in the right direction and hopes more fans get on board for the 2016-17 season.

He pointed to the crowds that show up for the basketball games between DeKalb and Sycamore High School – which frequently bring a large crowd, around 4,000 or so, when they play annually at the NIU Convocation Center.

“Success for me would be a sold out arena,” Frazier said. “When I go in there and see the amount of people who are at a DeKalb-Sycamore high school game – I live in the community, my daughter goes to DeKalb High School.

When I come to the DeKalb-Sycamore game and I walk into that stadium,

that’s what I would want for our men’s and women’s programs.”

If there is a sellout this season at the NIU Convocation Center (capacity: 9,100), it would be a monumental achievement for Frazier and NIU. Last season, the season-high attendance for men’s basketball was 3,457 during a 80-79 win over Akron on Feb. 14. They averaged 1,470 during 19 home games last season – going an impressive 18-1.

The record for attendance for men’s basketball is 8,041 in the opener against DePaul on Nov. 23, 2002.

One of the major obstacles for Frazier has been the lack of Power 5 schools coming to the Convo Center.

This season, the only Power 5 school on the schedule for the men’s team is when it travels to Minnesota on Dec. 11. Last season, the Huskies played at Missouri and at Ohio State.

Frazier admits he didn’t get close to scheduling any other Power 5 schools and said the Huskies are likely a year or two away and, he hopes to build up a better resume with home-and-home meetings with other quality Group of 5 teams – also saying they probably won’t dip down to play Division II and

D-III schools. This season the Huskies play one D-II school (Illinois-Springfield) and two NAIA programs (Roosevelt and Olivet Nazarene).

However, he said they are getting close to setting up a possible meeting with a Power 5 team in a Chicago-area venue – whether that’s the United Center, Sears Centre or another arena.

“Very close,” said Frazier, who wants both a men and women’s game as part of the deal. “As in, we’re going to finish some things up and when I sign the contract, we’ll make it happen. I don’t know if next year will happen because of schedules, but that is in our immediate future.”

As for as what’s happening on the court, the men’s team is coming off a 21-win season that ended in the eightteam Vegas 16 tournament, the first postseason appearance for the Huskies since 1995-96. NIU coach Mark Montgomery, who is in his sixth year, brings back a bevy of talented sophomores – including Marshawn Wilson (11.0 points a game), Levi Bradley (6.7), Jaylen Key (5.6) and Laytwan Porter (4.9) – and seniors Marin Maric (11.9 points, 8.4 rebounds a game) and

Aaric Armstead (10.9).

The Huskies also bring back senior guard Dontel Highsmith, who has missed more than two seasons because of an ACL injury.

“I know our offense is getting better because we scored over 73 points a game (last year) and I remember Year 2 (2012-13) we had that 4-point (half) at Eastern and that 5-point (half) at Dayton, so we can finally forget about that,” Montgomery laughed at media day Wednesday.

For Carlsen and the women’s team, they return their top six scorers in Ally Lehman (13.5), Kelly Smith (10.7), Mikayla Voigt (10.7), Courtney Woods (10.3), Cassidy Glenn (9.3) and Jazmine Harris (8.0). Carlsen, who was hired on June 30, 2015, said having a full offseason with the team has been highly beneficial.

“I think that’s a huge part of it,” said Carlsen, who went 11-19 last season. “The sport of collegiate basketball is a 12-month sport. It’s something we have access to our kids consistently and I think that consistent access makes it that much easier to transform the group into what you want them to look like.”

Being able to practice Tuesday at Halas Hall meant everything to outside linebacker Pernell McPhee.

It meant his left knee – the one that underwent surgery in the offseason, required a lengthy rehabilitation and cost him the first six games of this season – held up well against the Green Bay Packers.

It meant he could continue on his course toward regaining his form from last year when he was one of the Bears’ best players. And it meant life was enjoyable again.

“I [haven’t] played in 10 months, but it felt pretty great,” McPhee said. “It gave us the response that I expected, and it wasn’t really nothing. I actually got the opportunity to go out there [Tuesday] and practice. That was the most fun part about it. I didn’t really miss any days. It wasn’t about if I was [sitting], which would probably be a coach’s decision. I feel pretty great.”

It’s staying that way that’s a priority for the organization and McPhee, who turns 28 in December and is only in the second year of a five-year contract. The guaranteed portions of McPhee’s contract are up after this season, but he remains a vital part of the future. The Bears need him.

Before the Bears broke for a day off Wednesday, McPhee spoke briefly about his process for the first time.

It’s important to be mindful of the long term, although he’s determined to help this season.

McPhee’s diet is important. He is listed at 273 pounds, which is only two pounds lighter than he was listed at last season. But he said he’s lost about 22 pounds.

“I’m light as [heck]l right now,” he said, laughing.

And that’s a good thing.

“It helps me with the injury like not putting as much weight and stress on

my knee,” McPhee said. “It’s helping me out in my game even more because I’m moving faster.

“The main thing is just to keep the weight down and knowing that I can play on it and play and be effective. That’s the main thing, because when I’m heavy, it’s putting more weight and it’s carrying more weight Pernell on my knee.

That really McPhee ain’t a smart thing.”

So, what’s on his menu?

“It’s eating more salads and drinking more water – the basics that help you keep your weight down,” McPhee said.

“It’s staying away from that red meat.”

It requires discipline and effort on and off the field. There is more to McPhee’s longevity than his diet. He knows his future relies on his own efforts.

“It’s just taking care of my body, watching my weight [and] just making sure I get treatment,” McPhee said.

It also involves being honest with himself. McPhee knows he needs to respect how he’s feeling, that sometimes rest is best.

But, to McPhee, being disciplined also means not being afraid.

“It’s making sure I come to practice with the attitude of not trying to protect myself, because you can’t protect yourself in this game,” he said. “You’re either going to go 100 (mph) or you’re not.”

When McPhee watched the film of himself against the Packers – it included only 19 plays as coach John Fox said the team kept him on a “pitch count” – he said he saw ”a lighter and faster” player. But he doesn’t think he’ll be a different one.

“It’s going to take time for me to get back into rhythm and knock this rust off,” McPhee said. “But I kind of felt great out there.”

Swedes find their way in U.S. together Forsling, Rasmussen bring Swedish taco tradition with

mlazerus@suntimes.com Twenty years old and away from home for the first time, in a new city, in a new country, in a new job surrounded by new people, Gustav Forsling spent his first few weeks in North America in a luxury hotel downtown. The room was posh and the location was sweet, but luxury hotel rooms don’t come with kitchens. Only extended-stay hotels do.

And although frequent trips to some of Chicago’s finest steakhouses were nice, both Forsling and his new buddy Dennis Rasmussen missed the creature comforts and traditional foods of their native Sweden.

You know. Tacos.

“We told each other the first thing we’re going to do when we move into the other hotel was to cook tacos,” Rasmussen said. “It’s a Swedish tradition.”

Turns out Sweden has Taco Tuesdays, too. Only it’s Taco Fridays. The Swedes call it fredagsmys, a tradition of staying in on Friday nights, making tacos and maybe watching a movie and having a drink or two. Other than occasionally throwing in pineapples into the taco toppings, it basically is the same as it is in the United States. And so once the two made the Blackhawks out of camp and moved to the new hotel, they went right to work.

Rasmussen chopped the vegetables and Forsling cooked the ground beef.

“We love tacos,” Forsling said. “We

missed them. Every Friday in Sweden we eat tacos. It’s weird, right? I don’t know why, actually.”

For a rookie such as Forsling, who came to the NHL straight from Sweden without even a pit stop in the American Hockey League, any bit of familiarity goes a long way. So he and Rasmussen have become fast friends, as the 25-yearold Rasmussen – in his second NHL season and his third in North America – has taken the 20-year-old Forsling under his wing.

“The kid doesn’t have a driving license, so I have to drive him everywhere,” Rasmussen said. “He’s a great guy, a great kid. He’s so humble and down to earth and everything. He’s so easy to take care of, and it’s good for me, too, to have someone to hang out with.”

The comfort off the ice has made the transition easier on the ice. Forsling, who is day to day with an upper-body injury after being hit face-first into the glass Monday night against Calgary, immediately has become a regular for the Hawks. And Trevor van Riemsdyk’s injury makes Forsling’s job that much more secure. He has one assist in seven games, and despite making the jump to the NHL a year ahead of schedule, he hasn’t looked out of place at all in the NHL. “I’m getting used to it, but normal? I wouldn’t say it’s normal yet,” Forsling said with a laugh. “It’s the best league in the world. It’s tough every game. You have to be on your toes. But I’ve felt pretty good, and confidence is a big part of it. If you get confidence, you play better. If you play bad, it can hurt you. So I always have to think positively.”

If the 2016-17 campaign ends poorly, it would seem that the finger pointing at the front office eventually is going to have to turn toward a mirror.

At least in most organizations it would.

So for Butler, Wade and Rajon Rondo, this year is about coming together as the projected three “Alpha Males” and playing free and easy. That should make life simpler for the likes of Robin Lopez, Taj Gibson, Doug McDermott and Nikola Mirotic.

At least that’s how Butler sees it.

“I don’t think it motivates us to do anything,” Butler added of the outside projections of his team. “They’re going to say and do whatever they want to do and say anyways, so motivation? Nah. Motivation is we get to go out and compete and put on for this organization every day.”

CHICAGO – Former Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau was famous for constantly reminding his players to “block out the noise” when it came to outside opinions.

And although Thibodeau is long gone, that noise still is persistent this preseason – loud and clear for those who choose to listen for it.

Nationally, most have the Bulls as an afterthought in the Eastern Conference playoff race. A team headed right back to a late lottery pick. Locally, there’s just as much pessimism. Can’t shoot from the outside, Dwyane Wade’s homecoming is five years too late, not enough bench.

And then Jimmy Butler will tell you

What the two-time All-Star was vocal about was the idea of prognosticators – in his opinion – underselling what this latest version of the Bulls team can be.

Then again, it is a group that should be playing with very little pressure.

When the Bulls underachieved in the opinion of the front office two years ago, it was Thibodeau’s fault. They fired him and moved on. Last season

omedian Kathleen Madigan has traveled all over the world, performing internationally at festivals and theaters in Ireland, England and Australia.

Madigan will perform at 8 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second St. in DeKalb, as part of her “Mermaid Lady Tour.”

Madigan was a regular panelist on Comedy Central’s “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore,” and can be seen on Jerry Seinfeld’s hit web series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.”

During her more than 25 years in comedy, Madigan has released four CDs and two DVDs and has starred in two HBO specials, two USO tours to Iraq and Afghanistan, three Comedy Central specials and five CMT “Salute to the Troops” specials with Ron White. She also has filmed six Montreal Gala Shows at the Montreal Comedy Festival for Canadian television.

She has won the American Comedy Award for “Best Female Comedian” and the Phyllis Diller award for “Best Female Comedian.” In 2014, she was nominated for a 2014 American Comedy Award for “Best Concert Comic.” Her hour-long special, “Madigan Again,” was named one of iTunes’ best comedy albums.

Originally from St. Louis, she splits her time between the road, Los Angeles and Missouri.

Milton: How would you describe your life as a comedian?

Madigan: It’s really a job, a job I found and liked.

It’s fun to get paid for doing things you like. It’s a job, but a fun job.

Milton: How do you create your own jokes?

Madigan: My jokes come from everyday life. I

don’t sit down and write jokes. I wait for something funny to happen in my life, then I go on stage and talk about it.

Milton: What is it like working with other famous celebrities like Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno on a daily basis?

Madigan: Comedians know one another. I don’t dy, no specific topic or theme. It’s an hour and a half Milton: What is “The Mermaid Lady Tour?”

through May, with shows all across the country. I play at both big and small venues, and it’s always exciting. I put on the same type of show for 50 or 500 people. The more people, the more energy. Having 50 people in the crowd is fun, too, but in a different way.

Milton: What does “The Mermaid Lady” title come from?

Madigan: It comes from a joke in the act. It’s a

punch line. Most comedians title their tours.

Milton: Is the show family-friendly?

Madigan: The material is clean, but there are

every comedian starts. You have to go in front of people to know if it’s working. It all happens at open mic night. You meet other people and decide if comedy is really for you.

Milton: Is that how you started your career in comedy?

Madigan: Yes. I went to an open mic night and it

stuck. It’s a good time. You can travel and tell jokes.

It’s a lot of fun.

70 seasons of Stage Coach to be celebrated Nov. 4, 5 DAILY CHRONICLE This year marks Stage Coach Players’ 70th year of bringing theater and entertainment to the DeKalb area, and the group is celebrating with a special, one-weekend-only performance.

“70 Seasons of Stage Coach: A Musical Celebration” features songs from many of the musicals Stage Coach has performed in its 70-year history, including “South Pacific,” “Camelot,” “Shrek,” “The Music Man,” “Guys and Dolls,” “Wizard of Oz,” and “Les Miserables,” just to name a few.

The production includes more than 40 performers, with ages ranging from 10 to adult. Some of these people started with Stage Coach in the early 1980s, while others are performing for the first time with this theater troupe.

There will be solos, duets, trios and some group numbers involving the entire cast.

“70 Seasons of Stage Coach” is directed by Michele McClane, Nika Morton and Cortney Newby. All three have spent years helping Stage Coach Players both on and off the stage.

They all have performed in multiple

productions at SCP, and their combined resumes include titles of board member, play-reading chairwoman, vocal director, stage manager, black box committee chairwoman and music director. These three women have dedicated many hours to arranging music, creating choreography and working with the performers on their songs to make this show a celebration worthy of Stage Coach’s history.

This concert also doubles as a fundraiser for Stage Coach Players, to ensure these quality theatrical productions continue for another 70 seasons. In addition to the usual 50/50 raffle, a pair of season tickets for Stage Coach’s 2017 season featuring four musicals and three plays also will be raffled.

Lewis in the imagery of the medieval planets. Though Lewis is best known as the author of “The Chronicles of Narnia” and other theological fiction, he spent almost 30 years as professor of medieval and renaissance English at the University of Cambridge.

According to British scholar Michael Ward, “Lewis had a deep interest in the old view of the cosmos ... in which Earth was central and surrounded by the seven heavens, each heaven with its own planet.” Lewis described these planets as “spiritual symbols of permanent value.”

The Austin, Texas-based band is composed of nine musicians from around the world, representing India, Africa, Cuba and Persia.

rhythms, Atash are at the forefront of ATX’s vibrant world music scene.”

28 Add whole grains for a healthier diet Dear Dr. K: I know I should be eating more whole grains, but for years I’ve been eating white bread, white rice and white pasta. I don’t know where to begin the switch to whole grains. Can you help?

Dear Reader: Like you, many of my patients and I are making the switch to whole grains. Why? Diets rich in whole grains are linked with a reduced risk of many medical conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, obesity and certain cancers.

Whole-grain kernels are essentially plant seeds that have been removed from their inedible husks. All the grains we eat now started as whole grains, but we’ve stripped them down and lost some of the nutrition. Whole grains include unrefined versions of familiar foods such as wheat, corn, rice, oats, barley and rye.

Whole grains may take a little getting used to, especially if you’re accustomed to fluffy white rice and instant oatmeal. But they can reward you with more complex flavor and a more interesting plate. For example, I haven’t had white rice in an Asian restaurant in a long time – the nutty flavor of brown rice is so much tastier. The following tips might help you get started: • Start with the familiar. Switch to a whole-grain version of something you already eat. For example, try brown or wild rice instead of white rice. Or try whole-grain pasta instead of white pasta.

There now are several brands of wholegrain pasta in supermarkets that taste at least as good to me as white pasta. And my morning toast is always whole grain: It just tastes better than store-bought white bread.

• Go gradually. Add whole grains a little at a time. For example, try mixing some brown rice into your white rice or replacing half your white pasta with whole-grain

• Take shortcuts. Whole grains take longer to cook. Speed the process by soaking them first. (Don’t try this with pasta, though.)

• Rethink snacks. Popcorn is a whole grain, too. It’s a great substitute for chips and pretzels. I have mid-evening popcorn once or twice a week. If I pour some olive oil over the kernels before popping them, I don’t need to add butter after they’re popped. (You do need to add some salt, though.)

• Be adventurous. Quinoa, in three colors, now is easy to find. And the so-called “ancient grains” – including amaranth, bulgur, farro, Kamut, millet, spelt, sorghum and teff – also are becoming familiar on grocery shelves and in restaurants.

• Don’t be fooled. When you’re buying packaged baked goods or cereals, look for “whole grain” on the label. “Multigrain” means only that the product is made from more than one grain, not that those grains are whole.

Finally, be assured cooking whole grains does not involve long and complicated instructions. Combine the dry grain with water or broth in a pot, bring it to a boil, then simmer until the liquid is absorbed. It’s easy to eat healthy – and it tastes delicious.
