Costumes are so expensive.

Sometimes you canspend nearly $50 on one and not even include the accessories.

Because of this, I try to get the maximum amount of use out of them as possible.

We were super lucky this year. My daughter Hannah Jo’s costume for Halloween was bought by her awesome baby sitter, Tracy.

Tracy has three sons and only gets to buy boy clothes. But one day, while she was shopping at Target, she couldn’t help but buy Hannah Jo a Batgirl costume, complete with cape.

Tracy knows how much Hannah Jo loves superheroes and said she had to buy her the glittery pink disguise. Tracy is a rock star for being so thoughtful – and we will get a lot of use out of her costume.

With Halloween around the corner, there is much to do in DeKalb County in a short time, but it’s very doable if you are prepared.

My daughter’s Batgirl costume will be well-worn by the end of our shenanigans.

First stop, today, is the DeKalb County Courthouse lawn on State Street in Sycamore, where we will enter Hannah Jo ’s first pumpkin in the Lions Club’s 55th annual pumpkin contest.

At 5 p.m. today, the annual cake-cutting ceremony will take place next to the courthouse, near the intersection of State and Maple streets.

Hy-Vee generously donated the cake for the ceremony. Hope we get a piece.

On Thursday, we will head to downtown DeKalb, where more than 30 participating downtown stores will offer trick-or-treating for children ages 12 and younger. Nestle and the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce are hosting the event, so I know it will be good candy.

This event lasts from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Afterward, Hannah Jo will be tuckered out and ready for bed.

Friday is the Kishwaukee YMCA’s Family Halloween Event at the Convocation Center.

This is right down the street from our house, so we are super pumped that we don’t have to go far after a long workweek.

CHEEKY MAMA Becca Hirst Tickets are only $4, and children ages 2 and younger are free.

Better get your tickets soon because the price goes up to $6 at the door. They will have everything from bouncy houses to games for the costumed kiddos.

A jammed-packed full-of-fun day is set for Saturday. The Sycamore Rotary Club will host a pancake breakfast starting at 7 a.m. at the Federated Church in Sycamore.

Then, if you are an animal lover, as is our family, plan to go to Taxco to support Oaken Acres Wildlife Center and Tails Humane Society at 9 a.m.

Hopefully, we will last late enough to see the fireworks at the Sycamore Park at dusk.

It would be so sweet to watch Hannah Jo fall asleep under the spectacular sky.

Hopefully, Hannah Jo and the husband will come and support me at 9:05 a.m. Sunday for the 10K Pumpkin Race. It starts at the National Guard Armory. I can’t wait to see all of the pretty leaves changing colors and the Halloween decorations. It helps me pass the time while I am running my tush off.

Finally, on Halloween, we will be trickor-treating in our own neighborhood. The DeKalb Police Department posted that it will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Remember to turn on your lights if you want to participate in the fun. Cross your fingers that Batgirl’s costume only has a few holes in it by then.

Halloween is one of my favorite times of year. You can dress up and be whoever you like. You – I mean, your kids – get lots of candy. And did I mention that most of the shenanigans are FREE? DeKalb County is awesome.

Local business owner Johnson accepts Athena Award; others honored

DeKALB – Susan Johnson said she looks for women with potential when she is hiring for her company.

“They don’t have to come to me knowing my business, but I try to bring out of them the idea that they can learn anything if they try and work hard at it,” she said.

The Athena Committee and DeKalb Chamber of Commerce presented Johnson with the Athena Award on Tuesday at the 27th annual Athena Award reception.

Johnson is the president and owner of American Title Guaranty Inc., a land title insurance company in Sycamore. She also is chairwoman of the Citizens Community Enhancement Commission of DeKalb and a board member of the Epilepsy Foundation of North Central Illinois.

She previously led the Huskies on Parade initiative and served as chairwoman of the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce.

The Athena Award recognizes an individual for business and professional accomplishments, community service, and for serving as a role model to encourage women to reach their full leadership potential.

Johnson said that, coming from a large family, she had a lot of female role models, such as her mother and grandmother, who encouraged community involvement.

“That makes the job easier, but I also know that regardless of who you are or where you’re starting from, if you find what you love and you do that, you’ll be a successful person,” she said.

In working with the Stage Coach Players community theater program in DeKalb, Johnson said, she tries to show children there are no barriers for someone who wants to make a difference.

“I really enjoy working with the children when they are in plays and showing them that someone that’s a grandma can be involved,” she said.

Sharon Rhoades, the 2010 Athena Award recipient, said Johnson has advocated for TIF funding for the theater program and raised more than $200,000 for improvements.

“She is committed to making the theater a place our community can be proud of,” Rhoades said.

Carme Gregory, the 2015 Athena Award recipient, said the love and support Johnson pours into local projects shows the depth of her dedication to those causes.

“She is a shining example of positive guidance and mentorship as a lifelong resident and engaged community member, and has always embodied the highest professional standards,” Gregory said.

The reception also honored three

women with Women of Accomplishment Awards, which recognize those who embody the Athena criteria but who are retired or no longer working.

The 2016 Women of Accomplishment Award honorees included Joy Gulotta, retired director of the University of Illinois Extension – DeKalb County; Sheryl Nakonechny, a retired DeKalb schoolteacher; and Linda Wahlstrom, a retired DeKalb school nurse.

Other finalists for the 2016 Athena Award included Lisa Angel, a marketing development manager with Shaw Media and the Daily Chronicle; Tynisha Clegg, director of operations at the Family Service Agency of DeKalb County; and Helen Umbdenstock, owner of Helen’s Hair Salon & Spa.

With pensions in mind, DeKalb City Council eyes 10.8% tax levy increase

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The city’s finances are so dire that it might not be able to afford ammunition for the police department, but every employee is expected to get a raise in 2017, according to a new memo published Tuesday after a key financial vote by the DeKalb City Council.

The DeKalb City Council has set a ceiling for its estimated annual property tax levy at nearly $13 million, a 10.8 percent increase over last year’s levy, as budget talks begin in earnest for 2017.

The City Council voted, 5-3, Monday to adopt a resolution establishing an estimated annual property tax levy of $12,966,305 before tax abatements.

Council members David Jacobson, Dave Baker and Anthony Faivre opposed the resolution.

“The reality of it is we don’t have enough money coming in to pay our obligations,” Jacobson said, “and rather than deal with that issue, we continue to spend, and this is now showing the largest increase since I’ve sat up here.”

The levy vote came at the end of a five-hour meeting Monday and marks the start of the budgeting process.

“As a practical example, the next level of budget cuts to the police department will be reducing the amount of ammunition that the department purchases to levels that may not meet minimum training requirements for officers that are expected to maintain public safety on the streets. Beyond that, cuts will result in direct reductions of staffing and fewer ‘boots on the ground.’ ” Memo from City Manager Anne Marie Gaura and Finance Director Cathy Haley season,” Finance Director Cathy Haley said Monday. “This is the very first step.”

The 10.8 percent increase is necessary to cover growing pension liabilities following policies previously approved by the City Council, Haley said.

“We really want to take that pension liability seriously,” she said. “We feel like that is the most important factor to this tax levy this year.”

The conversation will continue at 5:30 p.m. Thursday with a joint meeting of the City Council and the Finance Advisory Committee at City Hall, 200 S. Fourth St., DeKalb.

Staff at City Hall set an urgent tone for Thursday’s meeting with a memo that said the city already has cut its

budget so much that further cuts would be a threat to public safety.

“As a practical example, the next level of budget cuts to the police department will be reducing the amount of ammunition that the department purchases to levels that may not meet minimum training requirements for officers that are expected to maintain public safety on the streets,” the memo from City Manager Anne Marie Gaura and Haley said. “Beyond that, cuts will result in direct reductions of staffing and fewer ‘boots on the ground.’ ” The memo went on to note that $750,000 in budget cuts were identified by leaders at City Hall before the budget was brought to the council and FAC for consideration.

“The level of cuts already built into this budget is sustainable for one year,” it said. “Candidly, it is not realistic to expect that it can be maintained thereafter.”

The fiscal 2017 general fund budget prepared by staff calls for spending a total of $36,649,001, and with revenue of $37,134,063, leaving a surplus of $485,062.

The budget includes raises for all employees.

“Assumptions were made on all employee groups including nonbargaining unit employees for salary increases to ensure placeholder amounts will be adequate within the fiscal 2017 budget,” according to the memo, which did not say how much those “placeholder amounts” would be, but noted that all salary increases would need to be approved by the council.

The fiscal 2017 budget also includes $30,000 for “Priority Based Budgeting software and training.” The memo said the city will start priority-based budgeting in 2018.

The draft budget also calls for allocating almost $818,000 toward an estimated $17.3 million needed over the next five years to replace aging city vehicles, facilities and roads.

Following City Council policy, the budget would keep 25 percent of annual operating costs in reserve.

BRIEFS Police seeking information in pair of theft incidents from September in DeKalb

DeKALB – Police are seeking help regarding two separate theft cases in September.

Police are asking the public for information about the theft of a Trek 800 mountain bike with a lock that was taken about 5 p.m. Sept. 10, according to a news release from DeKalb County Crime Stoppers. The bike was reported stolen from apartment building No. 15 at 1305 N. Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb.

The organization also is asking for information about

a car burglary in Fairdale. The car’s owner reported that it had been burglarized between noon Sept. 21 and 6:30 p.m. Sept. 22 while parked at a home in the 32000 block of White Street. A wallet containing credit cards and a large amount of cash was stolen, the release said.

Anyone with information about either crime is asked to call DeKalb County Crime Stoppers at 815-895-3272.

Callers do not have to give their names.

Crime Stoppers will pay a cash reward of up to $1,000; callers can remain anonymous.

Sycamore High School parent conferences being scheduled for next month

SYCAMORE – Parents can begin Nov. 7 to schedule conferences with their children’s teachers at Sycamore High School.

The conferences will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Nov. 21 and 22.

MARILYN JEAN CHRISTLE

Born: November 6, 1940; in Rockford, IL Died: October 24, 2016; in Sycamore, IL Marilyn Jean Christle, 75 of Sycamore, died Monday, October 24, 2016 at her home. The daughter of Edison Charles and Mildred Evelyn (Brokaw) Elliott she was born November 6, 1940

in Rockford, IL She enjoyed proper appearance and made everything around her beautiful. Marilyn loved cross-stitch, beading, gardening, and spending time with her family, especially at the lake. She also loved to travel from her early days as a TWA stewardess and her adventures in Europe up to cross-country trips with her husband.

She is preceded in death by her parents; one uncle, Pete and his wife, Betty; and a dear friend, Pat. Marilyn is survived by her loving husband, James of 50 years; one son, James and his wife, Liesl of Schaumburg; two daughters, Rebecca Wilson of Sycamore, Laurel Christle of Crystal Lake; one grandson, Philip Briar Wilson; and one granddaughter, Elizabeth Christle Wilson both at home; one sister and two nephews.

Private graveside services will be held Thursday, October 27th at the Lakewood Memorial Park Cemetery, Elgin at 12:00 noon with Pastor Jeffrey Mikyska, officiating.

Born: January 9, 1956; in Aurora, IL Died: October 24, 2016; in DeKalb, IL Nicholas J. Schramer, 60, of Cortland, formerly of Sycamore and Elburn, died Monday, October 24, 2016 at the DeKalb County

Nursing & Rehab Center.

Nick was born on January 9, 1956 in Aurora, IL, the son of Leonard J & Mary A (Juns) Schramer. He attended Kaneland Schools and graduated in 1974.

Nick began his career wood-working in Elburn and night watchman at the Elburn Packing Plant. He then worked out of Burlington, IL repairing pressure washers, covering 3 states. He retired from Coca-Cola Bottling Co in St Charles, IL after 26 years of service.

He married Anna Miller on April 14, 1988.

They made their home in Cortland. Nick had a beautiful, kind and loving soul and loved children. He and his wife Anna, fostered 27 special needs babies. He had many interests; scuba diving, volleyball, chess, board games.

He was also an avid history buff. Nick’s greatest joy was his family.

Nick is survived by his loving wife, Anna of twenty-eight years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two devoted daughters, Samantha (Aaron) Gudmunson and Shari Schramer; and two granddaughters, Emma and Mia Gudmunson. He is also survived by 7 sisters, Donna (Howard) Petersen of Sycamore, Judith Davis of Sycamore, Catherine (Robert) Johnson of Cortland, Anne (Daniel) Stanko of Sandwich, Jeanne (Mike) Hawley of Arkansas, Susan (Jack) Amato of Sycamore, Christine (William) Deutsch of Sycamore; Sister-in-law, Joanne (late Leonard) Schramer; and 5 brothers, Richard (Linda) Schramer of Sycamore, Robert “Skip” (Beverly) Schramer of Sycamore, Thomas Schramer of Elburn, Charles (Pamela) Schramer of Sycamore, Michael Schramer of Arizona. Brother-inlaw’s, Bob and Sam; and sister-in-law, Cathy.

He was a wonderful uncle to 38 nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Leonard J Schramer, Jr; one sister-in-law, Jessie Schramer; his mother-inlaw, Catherine Colligan.

Nick’s wishes were for a private family memorial. There will be no formal services.

2nd hearing prompts more debate about proposed propane facility

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A second public hearing regarding a Morris-based company’s plan to build a propane distribution facility in DeKalb County brought more debate about the safety of the proposal and how it would affect nearby homes.

Dibble Family LLC is seeking a special-use permit from DeKalb County to allow a propane distribution facility at 25330 Five Points Road, on agricultural land near the intersection with Route 64 in unincorporated Mayfield Township. The property is about a mile from Sycamore and 2 miles from DeKalb, according to county documents.

The proposal already had gone through the planning process, but the DeKalb County Board decided in September to send the matter back for another public hearing. The decision came after a group opposed to

the plan pointed out that the company missed checking a box on its application for the permit.

Both supporters and opponents of the proposed facility attended the hearing Tuesday evening at the DeKalb County Community Outreach Building. Hearing Officer Ronald Klein, who recommended the permit be denied in August, presided over the hearing.

Dibble Family LCC’s attorney, David Bzdill, opened the hearing with testimony from an expert witness who said that the facility wouldn’t have a detrimental effect on home prices or future development in the area.

Jay Heap, certified general appraiser, went through slide after slide with photos from similar facilities with bulk propane storage tanks in Sycamore, Wasco, Morris and Braidwood.

“What we’ve found during the course of all the studies we’ve done

for the last 20 years is that all this information is transferable. If you study a market, although the property values and price of homes may be different, the study will indicate that there is no effect on property values.”

Sycamore Citizens Race Against Propane Storage is a group that organized, established a legal fund and retained a lawyer as the plan moved through the planning process earlier this year.

The group has said it is prepared to take the issue to court.

Dibble Family LLC wants to renovate the existing building on the 2.77acre site and build two 30,000-gallon

propane storage tanks on the northeast corner of the property. A fence would be built to enclose the tanks and office areas. The facility would be used to serve the company’s existing DeKalb County customers. About 90 percent of the company’s customers are farmers and agriculture businesses, according to the proposal.

No decision was made at Tuesday’s hearing. County Board member Tracy Jones, R-District 1, previously said the matter likely would come back before the full board in November.

Officials at Tuesday’s hearing didn’t give a date for that meeting.

The presentation did little to assuage the concerns of opponents who are concerned about home values and safety issues. They have repeatedly cited a recent seven-alarm fire at a propane facility in Gurnee as evidence of their safety concerns.

“No one can guarantee that a propane explosion would never occur, not even Dibble,” Mary Haddad said.

“If there was an explosion at the proposed site on Route 64 and Five Points, do we have enough firefighters and fire trucks available to fight the fire? Do we have an adequate amount of water to put out a fire?

There is not one fire hydrant in the area. Will there be enough additional suppressants such as foam to put out a fire? So, the question is, is this community equipped to handle an explosion with its limited resources? I think not.”

Illinois has most registered voters since 1970 The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – The number of registered active voters in Illinois ahead of next month’s election is at its highest since 1970, even edging past the number from 2008 when Barack Obama – then a U.S. senator from the state – ran for president, officials with the state Board of Elections said Tuesday.

The increased numbers come amid an unprecedented campaign season in which Democrat Hillary Clinton, the first female major-party candidate for president, has squared off against Republican billionaire Donald Trump.

There were nearly 7.99 million registered active voters and 758,000 inactive voters in Illinois as of Tuesday morning, state board of election spokesman Jim Tenuto said. That’s more than the 7.8 million who were registered before the 2008 presidential election, the previous high since 1970. Inactive voters are those who haven’t voted in the past two federal elections.

The number likely will tip beyond 8 million before Election Day, Tenuto said, because 62,000 people registered online over the weekend and the applications have not been processed yet.

Governors of Ohio, Ill. place bets over Cubs-Indians series

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Republican governors of Illinois and Ohio are betting cases of beer, pizza and other ballpark favorites on the World Series that began Tuesday between the Cubs and the Indians.

On his Twitter page Monday, Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner wagered a Chicago-style deep-dish pizza and microbrew beer from Chicago if Cleveland wins.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich returned the challenge on his Twitter page, promising to send Rauner “fan favorites” if Chicago wins. A Kasich spokeswoman said those would include items such as local beer and ballpark mustard from Cleveland.

Illinois comptroller candidates meet in televised debate

CHICAGO – The major-party candidates running for Illinois comptroller faced off Tuesday in their only televised debate on the issues of campaign donations and paying the state’s bills.

Republican incumbent Leslie Munger and Democrat Susana Mendoza appeared together on Chicago’s WTTW, at times interrupting one another.

Both insisted they are independent despite support from the leaders of their parties, Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan.

“We are working hard to turn out voters across the state with a strong focus on early voting and absentee ballots,” Illinois Republican Party spokesman Steven Yaffe said.

Hand, foot, mouth disease spreads on U of I campus

URBANA – University of Illinois officials are reporting new cases of hand, foot and mouth disease among students on the Urbana campus.

Dr. Robert Palinkas told the News-Gazette that about 10 new cases have brought the total to a little more than 70 since the beginning of the semester.

He said campus housing units are focusing on sanitation and that some affected students

spokesman, Steve Brown, said early voting efforts are a “very good thing” and give voters a chance to get to the polls despite hectic schedules.

In Chicago, nearly 17,500 voters had cast ballots by the close of business Monday, the first day of expanded early voting in Illinois, according to the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that an additional 22,000 voters already had voted in Chicago because early voting started Sept. 29, the earliest time voting was available before an election in Illinois.

In suburban Chicago, the first day of early voting nearly doubled the previous record. Cook County Clerk David Orr’s office said there were about 25,600 early voters Monday. That’s compared with the previous record for the first day of early voting, when about 13,800 people early voted in 2008.

“There are contests and initiatives up and down the ballot that are generating a lot of interest from voters, who obviously want to make sure their votes are cast,” Orr said.

Chicago has about 1.5 million active registered voters, which is below the 2.3 million who were registered in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

Ruling in McDonald’s payroll card suit is upheld on appeal

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – An appeals court has upheld a judge’s decision that the owners of 16 McDonald’s restaurants in Pennsylvania violated state law by paying hourly employees strictly with fee-laden debit cards.

Luzerne County Judge Thomas Burke Jr. last year granted class-action status to a 2013 lawsuit by employees who

said the payroll card they were forced to use charged fees for numerous kinds of transactions.

The three-judge Superior Court panel agreed Friday that a debit card “is not ‘lawful money’ and is not a ‘check’ ” as deemed by the Pennsylvania Wage Payment and Collection Law. The franchise owners had argued that a debit card was the “functional equivalent” of a check or lawful money.

After the suit was filed, franchise owners Albert and Carol Mueller said they would give employees the choice of being paid by check, direct deposit or payroll card. A spokeswoman for the franchise owners said they were evaluating their options.

The Superior Court said state lawmakers still are trying to decide how to regulate debit cards as a form of payment for work.

Representatives for Oak Brook, Illinois-based McDonald’s Corp. didn’t immediately return a message seeking comment Tuesday.

Michael Dale Vance Jr., a 38-year-old man from Chandler, Oklahoma, is wanted on multiple charges, including two counts of first-degree murder. Trump attacks health care law after report The ASSOCIATED PRESS DORAL, Fla. – Suddenly armed with fresh political ammunition, Donald Trump and anxious Republicans across the nation seized on spiking health care costs Tuesday in a final-days effort to spark election momentum.

Reading Podesta’s stolen emails a ritual

WASHINGTON – Poring through thousands of private, stolen emails from Hillary Clinton’s confidants has become a daily ritual in Washington.

The hacked emails – some mundane, others laced with intrigue about election strategy, snarky barbs, whining about salaries or perceived slights – provide an inside, real-time view of the insecurities, sniping and self-promotion that churn beneath the surface of a heated presidential campaign.

Yet it’s also uncharted territory fraught with ethical dilemmas: Should a private individual’s stolen correspondence be read? How does someone respond publicly when they’re the subject of a private email? Have the emails been altered?

Nearly every morning since Oct. 7, WikiLeaks has tweeted out an alert that it was publishing on its website another couple thousand messages stolen from the email accounts of John Podesta, chairman of Clinton’s presidential campaign. As of Tuesday, it had published more than 31,000 of Podesta’s emails dating to 2008. WikiLeaks appears on track to continue releasing batches of Podesta’s emails right up until Election Day. The Podesta emails follow a string of notable illicit caches released during the 2016 election campaign, including thousands of messages stolen from the Democratic National Committee and former Secretary of State Colin Powell.

The FBI has opened a criminal investigation into the DNC thefts, but U.S. intelligence agencies are firmly pointing to the Russian government.

Donald Trump said he doubts the Russians are behind the cyberattacks.

For weeks, the Republican nominee has highlighted the contents of the hacked emails on Twitter and in his speeches, as his campaign issues multiple news releases a day.

Despite Trump’s bombast, no bombshell revelation has emerged to significantly alter the presidential race or prompt calls for the Democratic nominee to drop out – as happened with Trump after the leak of a decade-old video of him vulgarly bragging about groping women.

While the leaks do underscore the coziness between the Clintons and wellheeled donors, Trump’s reliance on the hacked emails has given even some in his own party pause, especially as he has continued to express admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“As our intelligence agencies have said, these leaks are an effort by a foreign government to interfere with our electoral process, and I will not indulge it,” Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who backs Trump, said recently in an interview with ABC News. “Further, I want to warn my fellow Republicans who may want to capitalize politically on these leaks: Today it is the Democrats.

Tomorrow it could be us.”

The releases from WikiLeaks put journalists in the uncomfortable position of receiving and reviewing stolen property for its potential news value.

There has undisputedly been some real news to emerge, such as Clinton’s secret Wall Street speech transcripts.

Emails obtained through public records requests or other official means often contain redactions, but not the WikiLeaks emails. They contain personal financial details, medical information, phone numbers and even an account of purported suicide threats made by a key staffer at the Clinton family foundation.

Still, media ethicists say, news organizations have little choice but to wade through the daily email dumps looking for news.

“Journalists must ask themselves, ‘To whom do you owe your primary loyalty?’ The answer is your audience, the American public,” said Kelly McBride, a media ethicist at the Poynter Institute, a journalism education foundation.

Time for Moeller and Albano to go

DeKalb School District 428 needs to move on from the sexual harassment scandal that has led to the removal of its superintendent and cast a cloud over the start of the school year.

The best way to do that is for both Superintendent Doug Moeller and DeKalb High School Principal Michele Albano to go.

Both in court records and in a grievance she filed with District 428, Albano has described behavior by Moeller – her former boss – that is inexcusable. In Albano’s telling, she and Moeller started up a friendship that developed into sexual attraction, but then Moeller got angry when she decided that they should just be friends and began using his power to retaliate against her.

She also said Moeller keeps loaded guns in his vehicle and in a holster when he rides his motorcycle. She said he would call her while drunk and lash out at her any time she had a personal or professional relationship with other men, and later had a phone conversation with her during school hours in which he cried and offered to pay off her mortgage to make it up to her. Another district employee was listening to the conversation, taking notes at the time, Albano said in a formal complaint with the district.

Moeller has said nothing in response.

Sexual harassment – need we say this? – is illegal and morally reprehensible. A boss who behaves as Moeller is alleged to have done, both while alone with Albano and with others listening in, deserves nothing less than to be fired without any severance.

If there is a clear and convincing case that Albano’s allegations are true, then Moeller, who was to earn a $199,600 salary this year, should be fired for cause.

Albano also should seek other employment. Her own statements raise legitimate questions about her judgment and the integrity of the process that led to her hiring.

Albano has said that Moeller promised her the job before she even applied.

Those educators and community members who spent hours in April interviewing candidates for the job no doubt feel betrayed, as well they should. If what Albano said is true, their input never seriously was considered. They were there as props.

Albano’s emails, obtained by the Daily Chronicle through a Freedom of Information Act request – as well as the grievance she filed with the district – show that only two weeks into the school year, she had difficulty getting along with curriculum administrators in the district’s education office. (She complains that Moeller supported her in her gripes about those “few women” until she rejected his advances.)

Earlier this year, she sent out a notice to district parents calling a Sept. 27 Big Sis Lil’ Sis homecoming event “hazing.” In a Letter to the Editor published Oct. 11, two seniors who organized the event said it was a tradition that had been approved and supervised, and that the principal didn’t talk to any students before she alarmed the community.

We do not blame Albano for harassment she might have suffered.

Based on her own statements, however, we do not believe the process that resulted in her hiring was fair. If Albano does not resign, her contract should not be renewed for next school year.

This episode has been an embarrassment, a distraction and a waste of public funds. It also has set a poor example for students.

Paying Moeller to go away might be the easy way out, but it sets a terrible precedent. It’s time for the board to set an example in how it deals with the fallout.

Choosing Sycamore for their permanent home was an easy choice.

Mike grew up in the Sycamore area, and they wanted to raise their children with the same advantages Sycamore has to offer. Laurie continues her pattern of service with her active roles in the VFW and the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.

When questioned about why she wants to run for the County Board, Laurie expressed her desire to give back to the community she loves by representing the concerns of her constituents in District 4.

She is opposed to increasing taxes and would seek alternatives for increasing revenues to balance the budget. Laurie emphasized that she is pro-business, especially small business.

Laurie is an energetic and enthusiastic candidate who will bring a new perspective and unique experience to the DeKalb County Board. Please join me in voting for Laurie Emmer for the four-year term in DeKalb County Board District 4.

Donald Trump’s victim mentality “Why’s everybody always pickin’ on me?” – The Coasters from “Char-

Donald Trump has a victim mentality.

If the term sounds familiar, it’s because it long has been the preferred conservative riposte when black people complain of being strangled by housing discrimination, economic injustice or police brutality.

The likes of Bill O’Reilly and Rush Limbaugh often use it to belittle and dismiss African-American concerns.

But really, who ever has had a greater sense of themselves as a victim than Trump? Who ever has been a bigger whiner, excuse-maker and all-out crybaby? Who ever has been more in need of lectures about personal responsibility than the Republican candidate for president?

If that were not obvious before, it became excruciatingly clear last week as the Trump Train left the rails and careened headlong into the gorge. Trump long has claimed that the election was “rigged” against him, apparently by state officials

VIEWS Leonard Pitts who insist on letting people vote and then counting the ballots, and by media, who keep stubbornly reporting things he has said and done.

In last week’s debate with Hillary Clinton, Trump went even further in knocking out the pillars of American democracy. He explicitly refused to say he would respect the results of the election. “I will keep you in suspense,” he said, making instant fools of surrogates who had promised he would abide by the will of the voters.

For the first time since 1860, we are left to wonder what the refusal to abide by the results of an election would look like.

Are we talking street riots?

Armed militias?

These are the unsettling (but no longer unthinkable) questions we are now required to ask because of the right wing’s infatuation with a towering baby man who serves, and can

conceive, no cause higher than his own gratification. For Trump, even the stability of the nation is subordinate in importance to his ego.

Faced with a looming blow to that massive edifice, he rationalizes by assuring himself and the rest of us that it isn’t really happening, that he is the victim of powerful, unseen forces cheating him of victory. But as Clinton noted, this is a pattern for Trump. Whenever things don’t work to his satisfaction, he claims to have been treated unfairly or conspired against.

Multiple women accusing him of sexual assault? It’s a political plot.

A federal judge might rule against him? The judge is biased.

The polls show him way down?

The polls are a scam.

The FBI finds no criminal wrongdoing in Clinton’s missing emails?

The FBI is corrupt.

His TV show fails to win an Emmy? The Emmys are unfair.

He’s about to lose the election?

The election is rigged.

He whines, he whines, he whines.

And he accepts responsibility for

virtually nothing.

It is important to note that Trump did not spring from nowhere. Rather, he is the logical byproduct of a GOP that has spent the last quarter-century telling its acolytes that they were victims: of “media elites,” Hollywood values and science, to name just a few. And if you’re looking for election rigging, look no further than the party that has thrown up arbitrary legal barriers designed to make voting harder for African-Americans and other non-Republican constituencies.

Donald Trump, in all his preening infamy, is the end result of the GOP’s years of hypocrisy and reality avoidance.

Shame on anyone who takes seriously his piteous moaning about the vast forces conspiring against him.

American democracy is the only victim here.

Now hiring – must be willing to work at Mach 1 The U.S. Air Force has big plans to expand its fleets of fighter jets, bombers and drones. But who is going to fly them all?

The dearth of combat pilots is becoming a crisis. The Air Force could be 700 fighter pilots below its needs by the end of the year, and it is short 200 drone pilots. What’s more, tens of thousands of commercial pilots are near the federally mandated retirement age of 65 – so current Air Force pilots soon will have a lot more help-wanted ads to sift through.

Some reasons for the military pilot shortage are obvious: relatively low pay, longer deployments, the aforementioned private-sector employment opportunities. Other reasons are less transparent. The act of dropping bombs on unseen enemies – whether the pilot is in a cockpit or a cubicle – takes a mental toll, and post-traumatic stress disorder is on

the rise.

The armed services are not blind to the problem. Since 1999, midcareer pilots have been offered retention bonuses of up to $25,000 a year, but the percentage of pilots accepting them has fallen by a third since 2010. Congress is looking to increase the bonus to as much as $60,000, which would make salaries competitive with the airlines, but is perhaps not enough to sway pilots burned out by military life or looking for more family-friendly situations.

But there are steps the military can take beyond offering more money. Air Force Secretary Deborah James has opened drone-pilot jobs to senior enlisted men, not just pilots and other commissioned officers.

The service is testing with a small group of trainees, but it needs rapid expansion.

Another possibility is for the Air

Force to offer those leaving active duty a strong financial incentive to stay in the reserves or join the Air National Guard. Either proposal is preferable to hiring more private contractors to fly surveillance craft, many of them former military drone pilots whose paychecks can be three times what they made in uniform.

But perhaps the biggest boost could come from a comprehensive reform of the Pentagon’s archaic up-or-out promotion policies, under which officers deemed unsuited for top commands are pushed out of uniform before they qualify for full retirement benefits. Some pilots might just want to stay in the cockpit their entire careers rather than being promoted out of it, and the military should be more flexible in allowing them to do so.

Part of this reform also should involve ensuring that becoming a

drone pilot is no longer an automatic career dead end. (It might also help if drone operators were eligible for the same combat medals as jet pilots.)

The service could also raise the age cap for aspiring pilots.

As for the psychological toll, the Air Force has to come to grips with the fact that fighter and drone pilots are just as prone to mental-health issues as ground combat troops. For starters, it should expand a fledgling program that brings behavioral-health specialists into the Air Force’s primary care clinics.

As the skills gained in uniform become increasingly relevant to a tech-savvy private sector, the civilian-military competition for talented workers is only going to intensify.

To maintain the best military in the world, the Pentagon will need to figure out how to keep its pilots.

Sycamore beats Burlington Central, faces Kaneland in regional title match

jseverson@shawmedia.com BURLINGTON – The Sycamore volleyball team is one of only a few to defeat Kaneland this season.

The Spartans will get a chance to try and beat them again – this time for a regional title.

No. 5 seed Sycamore controlled the first set and stormed back in the middle of the second to sweep No. 4 Burlington Central, 25-20, 25-17, in a Class 3A Burlington Central Regional semifinal on Tuesday night.

“We got a little lax (in the second set) and so one thing we’ll work on is to keep pushing when we’re up a set,” Sycamore coach Jennifer Charles said. “For the most part, I love the way they rebounded and kept pushing on every point.”

The Spartans (14-20-2) advance to face top-seeded Kaneland (31-4) in the regional championship at 6 p.m. Thursday.

In the first set against the Rockets on Tuesday, the Spartans led 9-8 before going on a 6-2 run – bookended by kills from freshman Kylie Feuerbach – take a 1510 advantage. Burlington Central got as close as 20-18 after a kill by senior outside hitter Summer Smith, but the Spartans regained control and finished the first frame with a kill by senior outside hitter Maizy Larson.

The Rockets surged early in the second set, taking leads of 6-1 and 9-6. Then the Spartans answered with an 8-2 run and never relinquished their lead the rest of the way. Again, the Rockets battled back to make it 17-16, but Sycamore powered with an 8-1 run to close the match.

“As a team, everybody stepped up and

did what they needed to do,” Sycamore senior Cassandra Hunt said. “We had a lot of energy and we were excited to play and that showed in the way we played.”

Charles highlighted the ability to spread the ball evenly and a strong showing on defense by the Spartans.

The Spartans will have their hands full against a talented Knights team that crushed No. 7 seed Marengo, 25-9, 25-10, in their regional semifinal on Tuesday.

“We just have to play Sycamore volleyball,” Charles said. “Kaneland is an amazing team and their record shows it. They have a good group of girls, but I think we have a good group of girls. I think we match up pretty evenly with them. It’s about who’s going to come out and play (on Thursday).”

Sycamore’s win over Kaneland – a 2523, 25-23 victory in Maple Park – came in

the middle of a tough stretch for the Spartans. They had lost, 25-22, 25-11, against Morris and took 15th place at the Huntley Invitational before stunning the Knights on the road.

Following the win, they lost, 25-22, 2522, at Yorkville and, 25-22, 25-18, against DeKalb to close out the regular season.

“During that (Kaneland) match, because we were on a little losing streak, I guess you could say, that match we decided we were going to go out and just have fun and not be stressed because they’ve won every game,” Hunt said. “We felt we had nothing to lose, so we might as well play as hard as we can and with the most energy we can. I guess that made us play better.”

The winner will play in a Class 3A Freeport Sectional semifinal on Tuesday.

Kaneland dominates Marengo in regional semifinal

jseverson@shawmedia.com BURLINGTON – The Kaneland volleyball team showed there’s a reason it’s the top seed in the Class 3A Burlington Regional.

The Knights were efficient all night and dominated No. 7 Marengo for a win in straight sets, cruising, 25-9, 25-10, in the regional semifinal on Tuesday night. “(We) just had to stay up in a game like this. You have to stay with your speed of the game and it’s hard to do that when you’re playing a team that doesn’t have that speed of the game,” Kaneland coach Cyndi Violett. “Just stay focused, run our plays and speed up the offense.”

The Knights (31-4) only trailed once the entire night – when the Indians (9-

20) earned the first point of the second set.

Kaneland, like it has done most of the season, didn’t hurt itself on the night and finished with only six attacking errors – three in each set.

“We work on it in practice and we work on finding shots and mixing up our shots,” said Kaneland senior Jessica Weber, who finished with six kills and 10 digs. “Finding the areas on the court that are open for a kill is pretty easy for us, especially since we work on it in practice all the time.”

Sophomore Katie Jablonski led the Knights with seven kills and added 10 digs, senior Cameron Wyant had four blocks and senior setter Hannah Nauert finished with 16 assists.

For Marengo, Alexis Nakoneczny had a season-high 12 digs and setter Ab-

igail Vito had seven saves and six assists. “(Kaneland) is very fast,” Marengo coach Meg Dobbertin said. “They run a very quick offense. Being able to make quick transitions is what makes them so difficult. ... Between (the Indians’ win over Harvard in the first round of the regional) and tonight, we improved more than 100 percent. The girls are very young. A lot of them haven’t seen the regional floor until our play-in game.

They stuck together as a group the entire season.”

For most of the match, Kaneland lived up to its bill of a team that broke a school record for wins in a season.

Leading 11-6 midway through the first set, the Knights rattled off six straight points – capped by an ace by Jablonski. Holding an 18-8 lead, they

kept their foot on the gas and ended the set on an 7-1 run, including the game-winning point on an ace by Nauert.

“We just wanted to stay focused and play at our level and our potential,” Weber said.

Marengo was only trailing 8-6 in the second set after an ace by Riley Connell, but Kaneland responded with an 8-0 run and later added a 7-2 run that featured three blocks by Wyant, including one that ended the match.

The Knights look to take the regional crown when they face No. 4 seed Sycamore, which beat Burlington Central in straight sets. Earlier in the season, the Spartans beat the Knights 25-23, 25-23 in Maple Park “Yeah, we definitely want to face Sycamore,” Weber said.

Our block has to keep talking. We communicated well tonight and it helped.”

The Barbs will take on CaryGrove, a school that has enjoyed much success with their girls volleyball program over the last few seasons. Barbs coach Jamie DiMaggio says that her team needs to control the ball to beat the Trojans.

“Our serve receives need to be on point,” DiMaggio said. “If we can

control the ball against them, we should be able to execute. Tonight, we got a little bit comfortable with a 12-3 lead and we let them back into the game a little bit. We have worked a lot on not committing errors and that’s something where you can see instant results.”

The Storm got out to a slow start, especially in Game 2, being outscored 12-3 in the second game. From that point, South Elgin actually outscored the Barbs, 15-13. Storm coach Joni Plach says that her team’s resiliency was a strong point for them

throughout the year this season.

“We have been down like that in games before and came back to win,” Plach said. “I always tell my girls that it’s never over until it is over.

The first thing I told them after the game was that they could leave the court with their heads raised. They fought until the very end. Tonight, we tried to make an adjustment to counter their outside hitter to try and get some blocks. We got some good touches, but they are a hard-hitting team from the left side.”

Plach also mentioned that while she is excited for the future of the program, She will miss the seniors who will be graduating. One of those seniors, outside hitter Taylor Hankins, reflected on her last game, her career and gave some advice to her younger teammates.

“We played a lot of good volleyball this season,” Hankins said. “We did well in our tournaments, we won our share of games and we took a lot of teams to three that we didn’t think we could have. Our girls just need to stay positive and keep working hard to get better.”

Genoa-Kingston rallies in first set, cruises in second of regional semifinal

sports@daily-chronicle.com BELVIDERE – Genoa-Kingston came out in the first set looking sloppy, but rallied to take the set and then the match after beating Freeport, 2523, 25-14, in the Class 3A Belvidere Regional.

Freeport (9-18) built a lead on Genoa-Kingston (25-9) that grew to as much as 11-4 before a switch flipped on for the Cogs that helped them battle back to bring the match to a onepoint difference.

After surrendering the sizable lead, Freeport would not give up the

match as easily, as the teams fought to tie the game at critical moments late in the set. The game was tied at 19, 20, 22 and 23.

“We persevered through tough times tonight,” Genoa-Kingston coach Keith Foster said. “We looked uncomfortable to start the first set and we never panicked and we fought through that. We’ve been resilient all year long.”

The Cogs took that rally in the first set and built off it after the break, creating a big lead of their own to start the second set. This time, it was the Pretzels who looked uncomfortable as they found themselves down early

on and were not able to overcome the momentum that the Cogs were forcing on them. The Cogs quickly found themselves ahead, 21-9, and would go on to win the set comfortably.

G-K was led by Cally McPherson who had 22 assists. Rachel Hughes followed up with 11 kills and Alissa Lacko had nine digs.

“I think we just settled in after the first set,” Foster said. “We put more balls in play, being more efficient on offense, getting more digs and that gave our offense more opportunities.

It was nice to play a team like Freeport because I think they battled us pretty well and as a result we were

able to fight and settle in against a good team. Now we get to play Thursday with comfortability on this court.”

The momentum from GK’s comeback proved to be too much for Freeport after starting off looking so strong.

The second game was just not good,” Freeport coach Sarah Swords said. “We just weren’t in it and we couldn’t recover from that. Our passing was off and our hitting was bad in the second game. We’re the type of team that when our passing is off, we don’t do very well and that’s how it went tonight.”

ELGIN – The DeKalb girls volleyball team advanced to the Class 4A Larkin championship match, beating the South Elgin Storm in straight sets, 25-17, 25-17.

It was the Barbs who brought the thunder and lightning as their net front presence proved too much for the Storm to handle. Junior outside hitter Hannah Oehlberg scored quickly and often from the left side.

“During practice, we’ve been working on our block,” Oehlberg said. “We’ve worked on limiting errors and setting. I think we have a solid program, and I think we will keep doing well.”

If Oehlberg’s quick offensive attacks were the lightning, junior middle blocker Jasmine Kemp was the thunder. Kemp’s intimidating presence doesn’t just come from a long 5-foot, 11-inch frame. She attacks with force usually reserved for outside hitters. Kemp’s penchant for going for the big spike had a pronounced effect on the Storm block.

Cutler on his future with Bears: ‘Whatever happens, happens’

The QB addressed the media for the first time since injury in Week 2

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com LAKE FOREST – No one understands his situation with the Bears better than Jay Cutler himself.

That may be obvious, but it’s worth the reminder when we in the media can pontificate about his future, and his own head coach can make the starting quarterback position foggy, but Cutler knows what’s going on.

Back from a thumb injury that kept him out the last five games, Cutler addressed the media Tuesday, opening with a smirk and a “Missed you guys,”

which he clarified was a joke.

Like we saw in 2013 when Josh McCown played well in his absence, or in 2014 when his offensive coordinator threw him under the bus and his head coach benched him, Cutler was matter-of-fact. He even used a famous Bill Belichick line to describe his reaction to John Fox making it seem like Hoyer could keep the job even when Cutler was healthy.

“It is what it is,” Cutler said. “Anytime you have a backup quarterback – and to Brian’s credit, he played well.

I think as a team, we wish we would have won some more of those ball games. But Brian went in there and did a great job. My discussions with everybody that I have relationships with in here were positive, and whenever I was ready to go, I’d be ready to go. There was never any discussion regarding that with me.”

Cutler didn’t give the cliché answer to a question about having the support of Fox. “He doesn’t have a choice, I guess, at this point,” Cutler said. “Brian is out, so I’ve got to go. I’ve had good conversations with Foxy this week, last week, the week before. There’s never been any strain in our relationship.

We’re both very open and honest, and we’re on the same page. We just want to win football games.”

The 11-year veteran did, however, echo what Fox said about the timeline vis-a-vis any quarterback controversy.

“I didn’t really get into it. I didn’t want to. It didn’t concern me,” Cutler said. “I wasn’t ready to play. My thumb wasn’t healed. The doctors weren’t going to let me go. The training staff wasn’t going to let me go. It didn’t really bother me at that point.”

Cutler’s return will come on national television against the league’s best defense, and with 2017 and beyond unknown for the franchise’s longest-tenured player.

“I think those are conversations for the end of the year,” he said. “Right now I’m working with Dowell [Loggains] and [QB coach Dave Ragone] and we’re just trying to find first downs and get our third-down conversion rate back up, score more points.

That’s all we’re really trying to do and that’s all my focus is.

“Whatever happens at the end of the year, it’s supposed to happen, and we’ll go accordingly. But right now it’s not something that I worry about.

It’s my 11th year, my eighth year here.

I’ve seen a lot of ups and downs, and it’s how it goes. At the end of the year, we can have those conversations.

Whatever happens, happens.”

Kyle Schwarber doubles, walks in dramatic return

By DARYL VAN SCHOUWEN CLEVELAND – Kyle Schwarber played in his first major league baseball game in 61/2 months on Tuesday night.

In Game 1 of the World Series.

It was storybook stuff, indeed, for the Cubs postseason star of 2015 who hit five playoff homers as a rookie before suffering what was thought to be a season-ending knee injury in the third game of this season. After striking out against Corey Kluber on a 3-2 pitch his first time up, Schwarber came within inches of his sixth career postseason homer his second time up, hitting a double off the top of the right-center field wall.

And with that, Schwarber became the first position player to get a hit in a postseason game without getting one during the regular season.

It was an impressive achievement on a whirlwind day for Schwarber, considering Kluber set a World Series record by striking out eight Cubs in the first three innings. Not to mention Schwarber’s mammoth layoff.

“He’s going to make outs,” team president Theo Epstein said after the Cubs activated Schwarber for the World Series. “But we think there’ll be a moment when he does something special.”

Questions about Schwarber’s health were answered by doctors and by the way Schwarber ran the bases in two tuneup games in the Arizona Fall League. With that, manager Joe Maddon said the decision to activate him and bat him fifth was “easy.”

“The biggest thing was doctors said he could do this,’’ Maddon said.

“With him, anything is possible.

He’s shown that.’’

Schwarber said he first thought being ready for the World Series might happen “about six days ago.’’

“It probably hasn’t hit me,’’ he said before the game. “Probably once I hit that line a lot of emotions will come pouring out and I’ll probably cry at

some point today.’’

Left-hander Rob Zastryzny was left off the roster to make room.

Maddon wasn’t ruling out the possibility of Schwarber doing more than being a pinch hitter when the series shifts to Chicago without the DH. “Let’s watch him the next two nights and see how he moves,’’ Maddon said.

Maddon didn’t think the speed of the game would be too quick for Schwarber, and he was right.

“If you make a mistake against him the way the win’s blowing, it could go far to right field,’’ Maddon said.

“I have a lot of faith in the guy.

“He’s definitely not afraid and he definitely feels he’s ready.’’

Indians manager Terry Francona was convinced Schwarber was “ready.” When Schwarber came up with a runner on first and no outs in the seventh, he pulled Kluber in favor of ALCS MVP left-hander Andrew Miller. Schwarber laid off some close pitches and coaxed a walk.

“In Arizona I tracked probably 1,300 pitches off a pitching machine,’’ Schwarber said. “That’s as much as we could get it to a live game besides playing in the fall league for two games and facing live pitchers. I tried setting it to the nastiest setting I could to get a really sharp break and train my eyes all over again.’’

Heyward on bench again as Cubs open historic Series

CLEVELAND – Eleven months after signing the biggest contract in Cubs history, right fielder Jason Heyward faces the likelihood of becoming a part-time player in the Cubs’ first World Series since 1945.

Manager Joe Maddon started Chris Coghlan in right field Tuesday for the Series opener, the second consecutive game Heyward has been out of the lineup. And Maddon suggested he might do the same thing in Game 2 on Wednesday.

“Obviously with Jason, the bat’s just not been working like you would like for it to work right now,” Maddon said. “I’m not giving up on him by any means. But

I just thought for tonight, run CC back out there and see if we get a little more offense rolling out of that position and then get J-Ward in the game later for his defense.”

Heyward sat twice during the Cubs’ six-games, National League Championship Series and once during their fourgame division series.

Tuesday night was the first time Maddon sat him against a right-hander (Corey Kluber).

“You’ve got to win four more games, and we’ve got to make our best guesses right now,” Maddon said. “We’ll see how this looks like tonight. We’ll play it out and see what it feels or looks like and make our determination for tomorrow.”

BAND ON THE RUN

The Cubs expected the American League’s top base-stealing team to try to exploit Jon Lester’s yips on the bases, and Francisco Lindor did just that during the Indians’ two-run first inning Tuesday.

And it’s making Maddon consider starting strong-armed rookie Willson Contreras with right-hander Jake Arrieta on Wednesday instead of the veteran Arrieta is more comfortable with, Miguel Montero.

“We haven’t decided fully yet, but we are considering that,” Maddon said.

“They do run, and Willson is one of the best young throwers in the game right now. You have to balance out how comfortable you think Jake’s going to be throwing him vs. Miggy.”

Arrieta downplayed the Indians’ running game as a threat.

“They’ve got to get on base first,” he said.

Epstein restless in way the rest of us are not VIEWS Jim Litke

CHICAGO – Theo Epstein is restless in a way most of us are not.

No one is more invested in finding out whether he can repeat in Chicago what he did in Boston a dozen years ago – win a World Series in a town that measures its disappointment in decades.

But it’s not just the short-term goal that commands Epstein’s attention. In the middle of a vacation with family or the middle of an inning surrounded by staff – sometimes even in mid-sentence – Epstein will extricate himself from the group, pull out his mobile phone and laser-focus on the longer-term target: building a dynasty.

That’s why no box has gone unchecked. It’s why Epstein spent days poring over brochures for sectional sofas to furnish the Cubs’ luxurious new clubhouse, but also why he spent five years tracking the ups and downs of a former Red Sox prospect named Anthony Rizzo, then traded for him when the time – not to mention the price – was right.

“We’ve made plenty of mistakes,” Epstein said on the field at Wrigley hours before the Cubs beat the Dodgers to wrap the NLCS last week.

“But the ones that we’ve hit on, we’ve gotten lucky with; some impact guys back, some best-case scenarios as far as how the guys have turned out.

“We knew,” he added a moment later, “that we didn’t have a chance to rebuild twice in a market like this.”

When Epstein came on board with the Cubs in 2011, his task was to turn around an aircraft carrier-sized organization. He put back together his sabermetric-styled band from earlier stints in San Diego and Boston – front-office execs Jed Hoyer and Jason McLeod – and rolled up his sleeves.

During the first phase, he set out to shed what was essentially a roster of bad contracts and spare parts, then went searching for difference-makers largely through the draft. Cub fans, meanwhile, struggled to see what difference all that attention to data and detail made.

The team lost 101 games in Epstein’s first season on the job, then 96 and 89. But in 2015 with manager Joe Maddon and a roster stocked with promising young talent and a few savvy veterans, it became clear the

Rizzo was a budding star at first base. Across the diamond was draft choice and soon-to-be Rookie of the Year Kris Bryant. Up the middle, Addison Russell locked down the starting shortstop job at 21, and Javier Baez began realizing his offensive promise. Behind them in center was Dexter Fowler, who hit for more power than ever before.

Despite his reputation as a numbers guru, one factor in many of Epstein’s trade and draft decisions was actually a hunch. He prioritized hitters with power instead of pitching, betting that one little-examined consequence of baseball’s toughened-up drug policy would be a dearth of the former and a surplus of the latter. This season made him look like a genius.

It didn’t hurt, of course, that pitching coach Chris Bosio turned pitchers Kyle Hendricks and Jake Arrieta from afterthoughts into tough-asnails, front-of-the-rotation starters.

Or that Epstein was given a Monopoly-money checkbook to add expensive complementary parts like veteran pitchers Jon Lester and John Lackey, and switch-hitting, infielder-outfield-

er Ben Zobrist, whom Maddon uses like a Swiss Army knife.

None of this comes as a surprise to Cleveland manager Terry Francona, who had the same job in Boston when Epstein, only 31 and still regarded as a wunderkind, rebuilt the franchise and reversed his first “curse.” He’d seen him at work before. He knew how much the infighting in the wake of all that success in Boston had stung Epstein.

“I saw him in spring training when we played them. He made a point of coming down actually during the game. And we text every so often,” Francona said on the eve of the Series. “Something comes up or something happens that he thinks is funny, or jogs a memory. We’ve texted back and forth during the last couple playoff series. We were together eight years.

“Eight years in Boston is, I would almost say, miraculous. There’s a lot of fond memories and we got through some tough times together and came out in the end. I knew when things got tough,” he said, “where I could go.”

That kind of loyalty and toughness impressed itself on Maddon when he interviewed for the Red Sox job

that Francona – who had much more experience at the time – wound up getting. What he’s learned about Epstein since made him even a bigger admirer.

When he scans the clubhouse and sees the team his boss has assembled, Maddon marvels that there’s not a prima donna in sight. Just like the couch and the ottoman he plops down on occasionally, Epstein has covered every detail ahead of time.

Not just the new-age business tools like NASA-caliber scouting reports, but the old-school nod to issues like personalities and character.

“I think sometimes in the game today, it gets to the point where it’s just about acquiring a number,” Maddon said. “I’m a big believer in that, but I also like the balance between the person and what the back of his baseball card says. Our guys do a wonderful job of balancing the math with the actual person.”

Thank Theo’s restlessness for that.

One dough, so many possibilities Easy homemade crackers punch up party platters from Halloween to New Year’s

We’re heading into the days and weeks and weekends of celebrations between now and next year. Whether we gather with fellow fans to watch football, visit around fire pits with out-of-towners or invite the new neighbors to share a pot of chili, a sure-toplease contribution for any get-together is cheese and crackers.

Not just any crackers. When they’re homemade, you can custom-

ize their flavors, toppings and glazes.

And if your cupboard happens to be a repository for assorted bags of interesting flours, such as oat and rye, your cracker game will be strong.

A simple dough – a flexible ratio of flour, fat and liquid with numerous flavorful possibilities – and an equally direct process – just roll, cut and bake – make the accompanying recipes a breeze. Keep the dough in the refrigerator for up to three days, or, for a long-range plan, stash a dozen dough combinations in the freezer for the

(Alternatively, use a pastry cutter or two knives to cut the butter into the flour.) Stir in the onion flakes, caraway seed, baking powder and salt.

Generously flour a work surface. Turn the dough out there and knead for about 5 minutes, until smooth. Gather it into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or up to overnight. (You’ll be using the floured work space again to roll out the dough.)

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Unwrap the dough and let it sit at room temperature for no more than 10 minutes (when pressed with a finger, the dough should hold the indent); re-flour the work space as needed.

Roll out the dough into a rectangle that’s slightly larger than 9 by 18 inches, then trim to straighten the edges as needed.

Use a sharp knife, a cookie cutter or a fluted wheel to cut out the crackers as you like (18 to 36 pieces total). Pierce the dough with the tines of a fork. Transfer to the baking sheet, spacing the pieces of dough 1/2 inch apart. (They will not spread.) The scraps may be re-rolled two times.

Refrigerate for 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Brush each cracker with some of the soy sauce.

Bake (lower rack) for 20 minutes or until golden and crisp, rotating the pan front to back halfway through.

Transfer the crackers to a wire rack to cool completely before serving or storing.

This recipe for Fresh Herbed Yogurt Cheese is just the ticket when you’re looking to put a dent in the stockpile of herbs overflowing in your garden or taking up too much space in your refrigerator. It’s a fresh cheese based on Greek yogurt, and it’s very flexible regarding its herbal flavorings.

I’ve chosen some of my favorites, including chives, parsley, thyme and tarragon.

But if you have other herbs at hand – basil, cilantro, mint, oregano – go right ahead and swap them in for my mix.

Whichever herbs you use, be sure to chop them with a supersharp knife, and do so briefly and efficiently. Whacking away at herbs endlessly with a dull knife guarantees that you’ll end up with a wet, gray mess.

Making this cheese is simple, but you need to plan ahead because the yogurt takes 48 hours to drain. And although you’re welcome to dig into it right after you’ve added the herbs, it tastes much better if you let it chill overnight. Plus, it’s easier then to shape the cheese into a log or a round.

As an appetizer, this spread is delicious served on toasted French bread rounds or your favorite crackers. It’s also great in place of mustard or mayonnaise on a summer sandwich of sliced turkey, smoked salmon, or roast beef – or on veggie sandwiches

starring cucumbers or tomatoes. However you use this cheese, you’ll be glad to have put the season’s herbs to good use.

Fresh Herbed Yogurt Cheese

Start to finish: 2½ days plus 20 minutes (20 active) 17.6 ounce container (about 2 cups) Greek yogurt, full-fat or

low-fat, your choice 3 tablespoons minced shallot 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley 1 tablespoon minced fresh chives 2 teaspoons minced fresh tarragon 1½ teaspoons minced garlic 1 teaspoon minced fresh thyme 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil Salt and black pepper Toasted baguette slices or crackers

Line a large strainer with a triple layer of rinsed and squeezed cheesecloth and set the strainer over a larger bowl.

Pile the yogurt into the strainer, spreading it out. Cover with plastic wrap, top with a plate and a weight such as a can of tomatoes and let the yogurt drain in the refrigerator for 48 hours.

Transfer the drained yogurt to a bowl and stir in the next 7 ingredients. Add salt and pepper to taste.

If time permits, cover and chill

Shape the cheese into logs or rounds and serve with toasted baguette slices or crackers.

Having not grown up with baking, the first cake I made felt like real magic. Creating a goo out of eggs, butter, sugar and flour and watching it rise into something magnificent was very special to me. Over time, classics became mingled with Indian spices and ingredients such as cardamom, cinna-

Date and Cardamom Cake Start to finish: 1 hour 15 minutes (30 minutes active time) Serves: 10

For the cake: 1 stick butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 1¼ cups dates, pitted 3/4 cup sugar 2 large eggs 1½ cups all-purpose flour 1½ teaspoons ground cardamom 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

College Fair set at KC

Free event planned for next Wednesday DAILY CHRONICLE Kishwaukee College will host the annual Kishwaukee College Fair from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, in the college gymnasium with a special presentation at 6 p.m. in Jenkins Auditorium on financing a college education.

The College Fair and financial aid presentation are free and open to the public.

Each year, the Kishwaukee College Fair gives local students a chance to comparison shop post-high school options at colleges and universities by gathering information on academic programs, admissions requirements, and financial aid for several schools at a single location.

At this year’s event, representatives from more than 70 institutions, including colleges, universities, military programs and trade schools, will be on hand to provide information materials and applications and answer questions. College shoppers will have access to representatives from Illinois schools as well as several out-of-state institutions from Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin, Missouri and Colorado, plus more.

The event also is recommended for Kishwaukee College students who are preparing to transfer to a four-year university.

Swaddling babies is not always safe Dear Dr. K: The other day, I swaddled my niece before putting her down for her nap. My sister told me that’s dangerous.

Dear Reader: My colleague Dr. Claire McCarthy, assistant professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, confirmed your sister is right.

To swaddle a baby is to wrap cloth (such as blankets or large towels) tightly around the baby, making it harder for the infant to move his or her arms and legs.

My mother said when I was an infant, I used to bang on the bars of my crib with my hands and feet. I guess, even at 6 months old, I longed for freedom and independence. Or maybe I was just ornery.

In any event, when I got that way, she swaddled me.

Perhaps you have swaddled your babies and with no ill effects. In fact, swaddling has been part of caring for babies for centuries – millennia, really.

It makes a baby feel like he’s back inside the womb, or being snuggled close. It calms many babies and helps them sleep better.

It also can really help some parents get their babies to fall and stay asleep on their backs. And that’s what pediatricians recommend to help prevent sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS, which is more likely when babies sleep on their stomachs. Babies who are swaddled also are less likely to startle themselves awake.

But there are downsides to swaddling.

Because swaddling keeps the legs together and straight, it can increase the risk of hip problems. And if the fabric used to swaddle a baby comes loose, it can increase the risk of suffocation.

The study found when swaddled babies were put on their sides or bellies, instead of their backs, their risk of SIDS went up a lot. For those put on their bellies, especially babies more than 6 months old, the risk doubled.

The study can’t tell us exactly why the risk doubled. But one can imagine a tightly swaddled baby might not be able to get her head up if she started having trouble breathing. And if that swaddling blanket came loose and she was face down, it also might make smothering more likely.

Here’s what parents should consider when they think about swaddling: • Always put your baby to sleep on his back. This is true no matter what, but is especially true if he is swaddled.

• Make sure whatever you are using to swaddle can’t come loose.

• Babies’ legs need to be able to bend up and out at the hips for healthy development. If your baby is going to spend a significant amount of time swaddled, use a swaddling sleep sack that lets the legs move. It might not be quite as effective in calming the baby, but it is safer for the baby’s hips.

Dear Abby: I’m DEAR ABBY a lesbian dating a woman who is Jeanne still in the closet.

Phillips She now identifies as bisexual.

We have been dating for about a year.

The issue is she still is in contact with a lot of her ex-boyfriends. I don’t expect her to come out of the closet on my time. However, I do have a problem with her talking to ex-boyfriends when they don’t know she’s in a relationship.

She thinks I’m overreacting. However, she has admitted she’d have a problem with me talking to exes and not bringing up the fact I’m in a relationship.

She finally has admitted I am a friend and introduced me to her family and one other friend. It took a lot of work to get that far. I am demanding she acknowledge – at the very least – she is in a relationship. I’m not demanding she tell them it’s with a girl. I don’t want to date someone who is ashamed of me.

Most of the time when she talks to an ex, new romantic interests don’t seem to come up. I would prefer she tell them right away, although she argues it isn’t the right time to randomly bring it up in a conversation. I no longer trust her to care more about my feelings than her interests. Should I say goodbye to this one? –
