He has served in the Illinois House since 1971, and he has been speaker of the House for all but two years since 1983.

WASHINGTON – Bill Murray accepted a bust of Mark Twain for his lifetime achievement in comedy – and immediately handed it to the audience to be passed around.

Murray – who received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor – was honored Sunday night at the Kennedy Center by more than a dozen of his co-stars and collaborators, including David Letterman, Sigourney Weaver and his older brother,

Dan McCaleb son; Ann Lousin, who helped draft the 1970 Illinois Constitution; and Robert Blagojevich, brother of the now-imprisoned former Illinois governor.

Performers introduced clips from Murray’s movies and appearances on “Saturday Night Live,” and the evening was also a roast of sorts, with jokes about Murray’s well-known tendencies to turn down roles and not return phone calls.

Giveaway kicks off fall festival season

news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – For 35 years, Sycamore residents Denis and Jill Jagodzinski have been giving away pumpkins to the community. And for many local families, it is the unofficial kick-off to the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival, one of the biggest fall celebrations in northern Illinois.

Residents lined up near the Wally Thurow statue on the corner of Somonauk and Elm streets on a sunny Saturday morning to pick out their pumpkins. Denis Jagodzinski, a retired American Family Insurance agent, gave away almost 6 tons of pumpkins from Theis Farm in Maple Park. He said he hopes the kids carve or decorate their pumpkins to put them on display on the lawn of the DeKalb County Courthouse.

“Sycamore has a beautiful event at the end of the season with Pumpkin Festival, and I want to support my community,” said Denis Jagodzinski, who has been holding the pumpkin giveaway since 1982. “So many people were very appreciative, and it touched my heart.

This helps people, and I get a good feeling. It’s about giving back to my community.”

Vickie Hughes of Sycamore brought her three grandchildren to pick out the pumpkins, that they’ll decorate for the festival. She said she likes that the event gets her family into the spirit of the fall season.

“This is the first time we’ve picked up pumpkins but I really appreciate Denis for doing this because it shows community support,” she said. “The kids love looking at all the pumpkins on the courthouse lawn.”

Nathan Troy, 11, said he cannot wait to get to work decorating the pumpkins he chose at the giveaway.

“I want to have the very best pumpkin. It’s my family’s tradition; we do this every year,” the Sycamore Middle School six-grader said.

Sycamore resident Heidi Gerdes made sure to bring her daughter Avery, 10, because the family missed the giveaway last year. She said it was important to her family to get their pumpkins Saturday, so they will have time to decorate them for the festival.

“She really wanted to come,” Gerdes said about her daughter. “This just brings our community together. People from other areas want to come and be a part of Pumpkin Fest. Sycamore is al-

Finley Jackson, 11, decided Saturday morning just before picking out her pumpkins that she was going to make the Statue of Liberty with them. The Sycamore Middle School sixth-grader said she loves decorating pumpkins every year. Her mother, Heather Jackson, said this is an important fall tradition for the family.

“This kicks off Pumpkin Fest for us.

It’s about community, and it’s just fun.

This is one of the most exciting weeks of the year if you live in Sycamore,” Heather said.

Heather and Dustin Lindstrom, both Sycamore natives, have been coming to collect pumpkins for the festival since they were kids. And now they are continuing the tradition with their 18-month-old son, Wyatt.

“We’re going to decorate the pumpkin for the festival, but haven’t decided

what we’ll do,” Dustin said. “We’ll let him do it because he has fun making messes.”

The pumpkin giveaway would not be such a success without the help of Boy Scout Troop 40, whose members helped unload and line up the pumpkins, and then helped residents carry them to their cars. Troop member Tyler Voigt, 15, said his troop is helping the community by volunteering to hand out pumpkins.

“I’ve already helped about three people load their cars. It’s not only important to the community that we’re here, but also for our Scouts to get their service hours, so it benefits both,” the Sycamore High School sophomore said.

Pumpkin Festival Committee President Jerry Malmassari said Saturday’s giveaway is important so kids can get their pumpkins to decorate for the courthouse display.

“Denis and Jill are doing this for

free, so this is a nice contribution,” he said. “This gives kids a chance to get a pumpkin to decorate for the contest. It starts our festival.”

Sycamore Mayor Ken Mundy said he always is impressed by the kids’ creativity and imagination as they show off their pumpkin creations. He described Pumpkin Festival as a big deal for the city.

“Sycamore has a strong heritage of volunteerism and generosity, and that helps make for a great event,” he said.

“It’s focused on nonprofit groups and is all about kids, and I love to see the youth marching in the parade and getting involved. It’s an amazing thing.”

The 55th Annual Sycamore Pumpkin Festival kicks off on the courthouse lawn Wednesday, with pumpkin checkin beginning at 4 p.m. and the giant cake cutting opening ceremony at 5 p.m. The festival runs through Sunday, and this year’s theme is Parade of Pumpkins.

Egyptian Theatre to unveil Kennedy’s 1959 speech in DeKalb

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Before he became president, John F. Kennedy gave a historic speech at DeKalb’s Egyptian Theatre in 1959.

Now, residents can relive that moment in local history, as the theater will play a recording of the 18-minute speech for the first time at a public event Tuesday night.

A slideshow of photos from the era will accompany the speech, which will be followed by a presentation on Kennedy’s life by historian and Marengo resident Jim Gibbons. The DeKalb Public Library also will have newspapers and magazines from 1959 on display in the lobby.

Alex Nerad, executive director of the Egyptian Theatre, said he is very excited to celebrate the noteworthy event.

“It’s really fascinating and amazing to have that speech on our stage and listen to it again,” Nerad said. “It almost gives you goose bumps that he was here. It’s a very cool part of DeKalb’s history.”

Then-Sen. Kennedy gave the speech Oct. 25, 1959, to about 1,300 people just a few months before he announced his candidacy for president in January 1960. Kennedy’s visit to DeKalb was a stop on a three-day tour of Illinois.

The Egyptian Theatre, which at the time was privately owned, did not have any memorabilia or archives of the event.

But in fall 2014, area resident Tom Zeeh received a cassette recording of the speech from the late Dorothy O’Brien, the then-Democratic chairwoman for the northern district of Illinois. Zeeh donated the recording to the theater, which worked with Northern Illinois University’s Media Services to digitize and clean up the audio.

Junko Tabei, 1st woman to climb Mount Everest, dies at the age of 77

TOKYO – The first woman to climb Mount Everest didn’t stop there.

Japanese mountaineer Junko Tabei, who died Thursday at 77, devoted her adult life to scaling peaks, climbing the tallest mountains in more than 70 countries.

Her philosophy was to live life to the fullest. “I want to climb even more mountains,” she said in a 1991 interview with The Associated Press, 16 years after conquering Everest.

“To think, ‘It was great,’ and then die.”

To do so required defying stereotypes, and a supportive husband, in a country that thought a woman’s place was in the home. She founded the Ladies Climbing Club in 1969 with the slogan “Let’s go on an overseas expedition by ourselves,” and reached the summit of Everest on May 16, 1975, as the leader of the climbing party of an all-female Japanese team.

“Most Japanese men of my generation would expect the woman to stay at home and clean house,” the mother of two said in the 1991 interview.

In 1992, she became the first woman to complete the “Seven Summits,”

outside of Tokyo, Japanese media reported Saturday.

She was born in 1939 in Miharu, a hilly farming town in Fukushima prefecture about 140 miles north of Tokyo.

Her first summit was nearby Mount Nasu with her teacher in the fourth grade.

Later in life, she became concerned about the degradation of Everest, completing master’s studies in 2000 at Kyushu University in southern Japan on the garbage problem as the famous mountain was opened to more climbers.

“Everest has become too crowded. It needs a rest now,” she said at a 2003 parade in Nepal to mark the 50th anniversary of the first successful ascent of the peak by Sir Edmund Hillary.

She kept climbing even after being diagnosed with cancer four years ago, Japanese public broadcaster AP file photo NHK said.

Simone Schaller, Olympic hurdler in ’32 and ’36, dies at age 104 The ASSOCIATED PRESS ARCADIA, Calif. – Simone Schaller, an American hurdler who competed at the 1932 and 1936 Summer Games and was believed to be the oldest living Olympian, has died.

She was 104.

Grandson Jeffrey Hardy said Saturday that Schaller died of natural causes Thursday in the home she and her husband built when they married in the 1930s.

Schaller tied Babe Didrikson Zaharias for the world record in the first round of the 80-meter hurdles at the 1932 Los Angeles Games. Schaller finished fourth in the final behind Didrikson, who set another record.

According to Olympic historian David Wallechinsky, Schaller had taken up hurdling only three months earlier.

At the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Schaller made it to the semifinals.

“For me, personally, I had tears in my eyes. I’ve seen them come close,” said Chicago native Jimmy Tingas, 47, who owns Wrigleyville Grill in San Antonio where he caters to homesick former Chicagoans still craving hot dogs and Italian beef. “We have one more task to do. Mundelein High School Dist. 120 sued after teen’s suicide

MUNDELEIN – The family of a 14-year-old Illinois high school student who killed herself last year is suing the local school district, arguing that it neglected to follow protocols that could have prevented the teenager’s death.

The lawsuit accuses Mundelein High School District 120 of not having an up-to-date suicide prevention policy at the time of Mikyla Wren’s death in October 2015, as was required by a new state law. The girl’s family is not seeking monetary damages in the lawsuit.

“We just want the school to do what they’re required to,” said her father, Thomas Hannigan.

Feds end lease with Illinois for state park, citing neglect

CARLYLE – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said Illinois has so badly neglected a state park at the popular Carlyle Lake area that the agency is taking it back.

The Belleville News-Democrat reported that the Army Corps recently ended Illinois’ lease for the nearly 300-acre South Shore State Park. The federal agency said Illinois has allowed the park to “become degraded, resulting in unsafe conditions and minimal usable recreation facilities.”

The park is now closed for needed upgrades.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources said roadway maintenance within the site has not occurred because the state does not have a long-term budget.

The state’s lease was supposed to run through 2025 for the property at Carlyle Lake, a popular recreation area in western Illinois about 50 miles

Chicago officer shoots man in traffic stop encounter

CHICAGO – Officials said a Chicago police officer shot and wounded a suspect after the man fled a vehicle and confronted an officer with a weapon.

A spokeswoman for the agency that investigates police-involved shootings told WFLD-TV in Chicago that officers Sunday morning pulled over a vehicle that had been reported stolen.

Independent Police Review Authority spokeswoman Mia Sissac said one officer opened fire, hitting a man multiple times.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the man was struck in the lower extremities.

No officers were injured.

Chicago police said three men exited the vehicle and fled before one “confronted an officer with a weapon.” Police said three people are in custody and two weapons were recovered.

The wounded man was taken

to the hospital. Guglielmi said he was in serious but stable condition.

Caterpillar opening 1st permanent office in downtown Chicago

PEORIA – The Peoria-based construction and mining equipment company Caterpillar Inc. is opening its first permanent office in Chicago.

The Journal Star reported that the Caterpillar office will have 45 employees and be in the downtown Merchandise Mart building along the Chicago River. The new Chicago “Digital and Analytics Hub” expands on operations already housed in Peoria.

Specifically, the company’s Analytics and Innovation Division takes information from sensors embedded in heavy equipment and relays it to Caterpillar and others. The division was created in April 2015.

A maintenance crew had slowed down traffic on Interstate 10 before the vehicles crashed just north of the desert resort town of Palm Springs, California Highway Patrol Border Division Chief Jim Abele said.

The work had gone on for hours without problems, he said.

Abele said the bus carrying 44 passengers was going much faster than the truck. “The speed of bus was so significant that the trailer itself entered about 15 feet into the bus,” Abele told reporters.

Alan Sorrentino said the response to the letter to the editor, printed in The Barrington Times Wednesday, has been “vicious” and that he’s received death threats. He implored marchers to stay away from his home and maintained the letter was meant to be humorous.

But organizers said the socalled yoga pants parade wasn’t a protest against Sorrentino specifically but part of a bigger movement against misogyny and men dictating how women should dress.

Clinton looks past Trump, aims to help other Dems

DURHAM, N.C. – Newly confident and buoyant in the polls, Hillary Clinton is looking past Donald Trump while widening her mission to include helping Democrats seize the Senate and chip away at the Republican-controlled House.

Although Trump’s campaign insisted Sunday it was premature to count him out, it’s Clinton whose path to winning the White House has only grown wider in the race’s final weeks. Even longtime Republican strongholds such as Utah and Arizona suddenly appear within her reach Nov. 8, enticing Democrats to campaign hard in territory they haven’t won for decades.

The shifting political map has freed Clinton and her well-funded campaign to spend time and money helping other Democrats in competitive races. Clinton said she didn’t “even think about responding” to Trump anymore and instead would spend the final weeks on the road “emphasizing the importance of electing Democrats down the ballot.”

“We’re running a coordinated campaign, working hard with gubernatorial, Senate and House candidates,” said Robby Mook, Clinton’s campaign manager.

And for good reason.

After a merciless two-year campaign, the next president will face the daunting task of governing a bitterly divided nation. If Clinton wins, her prospects for achieving her goals would be greatly diminished unless her victory is accompanied by major Democratic gains in Congress.

“We’ve got to do the hard and maybe most important work of healing, healing our country,” Clinton said Sunday at Union Baptist Church in Durham, North Carolina.

“We are behind. She has some advantages,” Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway said. Still, she added, “We’re not giving up.

Conway laid out in granular detail Trump’s potential path to winning: victories in Florida, Iowa, North Carolina, Nevada and Ohio, to start.

If Trump prevents Arizona and Georgia from falling to Democrats and adds in some combination of Colorado, Virginia, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania, he could reach the 270 electoral votes needed, Conway said.

It won’t be easy. A current Associated Press analysis of polling, demographic trends and other campaign data rates Virginia as solidly Democratic, while Colorado,

New Hampshire and Pennsylvania are all leaning Democratic. Arizona, remarkably, is a toss-up.

Campaigning Sunday in Florida, Trump called for voters to elect a Republican House and Senate that would “swiftly enact” his priorities, which include overhauling taxes, restoring higher spending on defense and repealing the Affordable Care Act. “We can enact our whole plan in the first 100 days – and we will,” Trump said.

If Clinton wins, Democrats would need a net gain of four Senate seats to retake the majority. House control would be much harder, considering Republicans currently enjoy their largest House majority since 1931. Democrats would need a 30-seat gain, a feat they haven’t accomplished in roughly four decades.

Clinton’s nascent focus on helping fellow Democrats comes with an inherent contradiction. For months, she deliberately avoided the strategy employed by other Democrats of trying to saddle all Republicans with an unpopular Trump. In August, she said Trump represented the “radical fringe,” rather than the mainstream of the Republican Party.

On the campaign of Canada’s #TellAmericaItsGreat Canadians delivered a love note to Americans via social media, and it was basically the international equivalent of taking a casserole to a neighbor in need.

Clearly our friends to the north can tell this election season is making a lot of us queasy.

The #TellAmericaItsGreat campaign includes a video in which several dozen Canadians tell us what’s right about our country.

“We know you’ve got some really big decisions to make,” one says. But “as you think about your future, we want you to know we really think you’re great.”

Why? There’s jazz. There are the national parks. There’s America’s diversity and openness. We dream big and when “things are tough, you fight to make them better.”

But really. Why? “Sometimes friends just need to look out for each other,” said Shari Walczak, a founder of The Garden collective, an image marketing agency behind the effort.

In a blog post called “A Friend in Need,” the agency spelled it out: “It’s no secret that America is going through a hard time right now. The election has exposed some pretty scary realities that will likely challenge them for years to come, regardless of who’s elected. They’ve been bombarded with a tremendous amount of negativity, and it’s likely that for many of them, the immediate future seems rather bleak. ... America could probably use a little cheering up.”

At a time we’re churning out so much rich material for comics and other peddlers of satire and one-liners, these Canadians decided a little kindness might be more helpful.

How right they are.

It’s not just neighborly. It’s a welcome reminder that we, the people of the United States, are bigger and better than any one election cycle.

These pro-America messages are a necessary reminder that America is better than its politicians. And that we will get through this – with a little help from our friends.

nice thing to do, which feeds into the stereotype about Canadians and will no doubt provide some fodder for those comics and one-line peddlers.

So what? Have at it, laughmeisters.

Kindness is the only thing we need more than a good laugh right now. We tend to undervalue power of nice.

The Canadians who took the time to put together this Ode to the USA know us. In Arizona, Canadians have made significant investments in real estate and business, which builds on long-standing relationships with winter visitors.

There’s an endearing sincerity to taking the time to spread a little kindness. Let’s face it: The power of nice is something Americans tend to undervalue in our own celebrity-driven culture.

When things settle down – or sooner – Americans might think about a concerted effort to share some goodwill with our neighbor to the south.

The U.S. presidential election has been tough on Mexico, too.

All three countries have a vested interest in taking care of the neighborhood.

Anyone who has ever gotten a casserole in a time of need knows the value of small acts of kindness. Let’s respond with generosity of spirit.

The American family is feeling bruised and bitter, but we still share common values and a long history of getting through tough times together.

One of the characteristically American attributes mentioned in the Canadian video is our generosity in the form of charitable giving.

Right now, we need to respond to each other with generosity of spirit.

Sounds like a fairy tale, doesn’t it?

Yet Americans responded to the #TellAmericaItsGreat campaign with #ThankYouCanada.

Sure, it’s a small thing – especially if you stay tightly wrapped in a cloak of cynicism.

But it’s also a kindness that speaks to what’s good in us and our international neighbors. This is a good time to look for our better angels.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Rotary marks World Polio Day

To the Editor: Polio is a communicable, crippling and completely preventable disease. Many years ago, worldwide vaccination efforts eradicated smallpox. Today, through the support of vaccination programs, we have the opportunity to eradicate a second disease – polio.

Polio eradication began in 1985 with Rotary efforts in the Philippines, and after success there, subsequently expanded through Rotary clubs into a worldwide vaccination effort. Since 1985, the incidence of paralytic polio has been reduced from 1,000 cases daily worldwide to just 27 year to date in 2016. In the past, the talk was of the elimination of the last 1 percent of cases; now only the tiniest sliver remains. Eradication is in sight.

As Rotarians, we are extremely proud of our effort; no other disease ever has been eradicated because of work instituted by a service club. Our effort has grown into one of the world’s largest public-private health care partnerships.

With our partners – the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization, the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund

(UNICEF) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation – along with the support of governments of countries around the globe, Rotary is renewing its commitment to finishing the job. Just last year, India was declared polio-free. However, since the polio virus can live for some time in soil and water, the vaccination program there will need to continue for next three years.

The final push in polio eradication is to vaccinate children in remote areas of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria.

To keep our promise to all children that they never will contract this crippling disease, Rotarians worldwide have donated more than $1 billion to The Rotary Foundation.

The Rotary Foundation recently received the highest possible score from Charity Navigator for its efficient and effective use of donations.

You can be part of this worldwide effort. Contact your local Rotary club to ask how you can help, or contribute directly to The Rotary Foundation’s End Polio Fund at www.endpolio.org. Join the fight, and keep all children free of polio.

On Nov. 6, the Joseph Glidden Homestead will host the annual Barbed Wire Bus Tour to the Miller-Ellwood Pioneer Cabin near Kingston, narrated by noted area historian Steve Bigolin.

The bus tour will leave from Glidden Homestead at 11 a.m. and return at 2 p.m. For fans of history, timber construction, restoration, homesteading and barbed wire, this tour is a must.

Isaac Ellwood’s father-in-law, William Miller, built the cabin in 1835 where Ellwood’s wife, Harriet Miller Ellwood was born two years later.

The cabin was relocated and expertly restored by Ney Grange and the DeKalb County Forest Preserve, with the help of an authority on log cabins, and became a county historical site in 2014.

CHICAGO – Keith Schram had one request when his wife suggested moving to the city after his retirement in 2003.

“I said, ‘As long as we’re within 10 blocks of heaven, I’ll do it,’ ” Schram said.

Care to guess where heaven is?

Before he became an usher, Schram spent 33 years as a high school math teacher and basketball coach. He started at Lemont High School before moving to Peotone High School for the bulk of his career.

It is not uncommon for a former student to recognize Schram as he or she walks through the concourse. Once, a woman turned to him quizzically and asked, “Mr. Schram?” Turns out, he was her teacher in 1971.

So much has changed since then, but not Schram’s love for the Cubs.

“I was a Cub fan from the time I can remember,” said Schram, whose twin brothers were 7 years older. “My dad

Cubs, Indians will square off

The Associated Press At long, long last, it’s true: Either the Cubs or Cleveland Indians will win the World Series.

The matchup between teams that forever waited till next year – next century, really – finally is here.

A classic Fall Classic, for sure.

Do-it-all Javy Baez, flashy Francisco Lindor, MVP-caliber Kris Bryant and a bevy of young stars. Lights-out relievers Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman, and wily skippers Joe Maddon and Terry Francona.

Plus, intrigue if injured All-Star starter Danny Salazar and slugger Kyle Schwarber can play.

Oh, and did someone mention something about a drought?

Game 1 is at Progressive Field on Tuesday night, with the Cubs opening as a heavy favorite to win their first crown since 1908.

In the Cubs’ last visit to Cleveland, in August 2015, they posted a 17-0 rout for the most-lopsided shutout ever in interleague play. It got so out of hand that two Indians outfielders wound up pitching.

But that’s ancient history.

For the Cubs, this is their first World Series trip since 1945. They clinched their spot Saturday night at rollicking Wrigley Field as big-league ERA leader Kyle Hendricks outpitched Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw for a 5-0 win in Game 6 of the NL Championship Series.

Schram’s dad has passed away. So has his mom, who died last month at age 100. Both brothers are gone, too.

Now, they’re ready to sweep aside the Curse of the Billy Goat and the specter of Steve Bartman. And make up for the near-misses by Cubs greats such as Ernie Banks, Ron Santo and Billy Williams.

“Obviously, we know that it’s something that’s going to be talked about with the history of the organization,” pitcher Jake Arrieta said. “But it’s really not something we focus on at all.

The Indians also have a past full of failure and frustration. Their title drought dates to Bob Feller, Lou Boudreau, Larry Doby and 1948, trailing only the Cubs for the longest wait.

In 1997, Cleveland was three outs from winning the championship when closer Jose Mesa blew a one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 7 at Florida. An error by sure-handed second baseman Tony Fernandez doomed them in the 11th.

This year, LeBron James and

Except Schram dreamed bigger. He decided to mail the ball to the Cubs and ask to have it autographed.

“My parents and everybody else said, ‘No, don’t do that, you’re never going to see that ball again,’ ” Schram said. “But I had all the confidence in the world. So I sent it in.”

A few weeks later, the ball returned in the mail – signed by all of the Cubs.

Schram carries the same unflinch-

Like the Cubs with Bartman, the spectator who infamously deflected a foul ball at Wrigley during the 2003 NL playoffs, the Indians also have a prominent fan. It’s John Adams, the man who has been beating a drum at most every home game for more than four decades.

Although the clubs hold spring training about 30 miles apart in Arizona, they don’t overlap a lot.

They’ve never played in the postseason and are 9-9 against each other in interleague action.

A pair of big cities, one on Lake Michigan, the other on Lake Erie, waiting ... and hoping to end the wait.

On deck: Great Lakes, great stakes. ing confidence that the Cubs will win the World Series this year.

How could you doubt the man? After all, he works in heaven.

“I have a feeling that if we win the World Series, there will be a lot of people that retire from this job,” Schram said. “Not me. I’m going to stay here as long as I can.”

Coach Bill McCarty said he wasn’t too surprised about the No. 3 seed, having figured out the point total heading in.

The Coalers have missed the playoffs only three times since 1987, most recently in 2010. They were one-and-done after a 5-4 regular season last year. They won a state title in 1993, and were runners-up in 2004.

“I know they are always in a good league and are a good program,” McCarty said. “They are going to come here ready to play.”

KINGSTON – The members of the Hiawatha football team gathered around the TV, while being filmed from above, cheering as the televised IHSA Selection Show cut to the Hawks.

The players cheered their first playoff berth since 1987 as they waited for the delayed shot of them standing around caught up to them cheering. Then they waited. And waited. And then the broadcast cut away before it showed them cheering.

It’s probably been the biggest thing to go wrong for the Hawks in a long time.

“Hey, we’re new at this,” coach Jason Keneway said with a laugh.

The Hawks (7-2) are the No. 5 seed and will face No. 12 LeRoy (6-3) in the first round the Class 1A playoffs. Keneway said the team was leaning toward playing at 1 p.m. Saturday but nothing was official. Times and dates for all playoff games won’t be official until Monday.

“I’m still kind of speechless about the whole thing,” Keneway said. “It’s still exciting. For another week, we still get to play and try to get better.”

Joining the Hawks in the postseason are DeKalb, Sycamore and Genoa-Kingston. After a 9-0 regular season, the Cogs earned a No. 3 seed in Class 4A and will face No. 14 Coal City (5-4). The No. 13 Spartans (5-4) will face No. 4 Solorio Academy (7-2) in a Class 5A first-round game and the No. 7 Barbs (7-2) will face No. 10 Marmion (6-3) in the Class 6A first round.

The Hawks’ opponent, LeRoy, was second in the Heart of Illinois (Small) Conference, going 6-3 overall. The Panthers played three teams with a winning record all year, losing to all three by a combined 85-2.

The Panthers won a state title in 1996 and were runners-up in 2001 and 2003.

This is the third straight year they are in the postseason, and have made 22 appearances since 1989. The Hawks have

Huskies get 4 turnovers, thump Bulls

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The Northern Illinois defense only had three takeaways in the first six games.

They have seven in the past two weeks.

The defense combined to have four interceptions against the Bulls and the Huskies dominated their way to a 44-7 win on homecoming on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Huskie Stadium.

The Huskies had struggled to force turnovers this season, with only two interceptions and one fumble recovery in their first six weeks. They entered the game ranked No. 11 in the Mid-American Conference in turnover margin (minus-5) behind last place Bowling Green (minus-13).

With a plus-3 margin against the Bulls, the Huskies are now in a four-way tie for sixth in the MAC. “When you get four picks, that’s a big thing,” NIU coach Rod Carey said.

Playing without junior cornerback Shawun Lurry (concussion) – not to mention cornerbacks Anthony Brooks and Albert Smalls – junior cornerback Mayomi Olootu had two interceptions, while senior linebacker Jamaal Payton

and freshman safety Trequan Smith each added one.

“It’s just about preparing each week,” Olootu said. “We’re getting better every day and we’re seeing the plays. Our coaches are doing a good job of putting us in position, and we’re making the plays we need to make.”

The Huskies now have six interceptions in the past two games, after picking off Central Michigan quarterback Cooper Rush twice in the 34-28 loss in triple overtime. The defense also recovered a fumble against the Chippewas.

As important as the turnovers are, Saturday the Huskies actually turned them into points – after going scoreless in the three forced turnovers against the Chippewas. Against the Bulls, the four interceptions translated into 16 points for the Huskies.

“You want them all to be points, you want them all to be touchdowns,” Carey said. “Anything short of that and we’re really critical of ourselves. Especially the field position on those … but it is good to get points off them.”

After Olootu’s first interception, which came on a tipped pass, the Huskies turned it into a 25-yard field goal by Christian Hagan to take a 10-0 lead in the first quarter.

After Smith’s interception, the Huskies eventually scored on a 15-yard touchdown run by quarterback Anthony Maddie, who finished with 125 rushing yards and four touchdowns, to go along with going 16-for-29 passing for 199 yards and a touchdown.

Perhaps the most impressive drive of the game came late in the second quarter.

With the Bulls (1-6 overall, 0-3 in MAC East) on the NIU 10-yard line late in the first half, Olootu had his second interception – this one coming in the end zone with 1:04 left. The Huskies’ offense then went 80 yards in five plays and 46 seconds – including an 18-yard run by Maddie, an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Buffalo and a 39-yard reception by Kenny Golladay and was capped by a 3-yard touchdown run by Maddie – to head into halftime with a 30-7 advantage.

“Right before the half there, I thought that was big because the series before we had gone three-and-out and given it to them with three minutes to go, and they drove all the way down,” Carey said.

“To get that pick and go and turn it into seven, I think was really good from all aspects – playing, coaching, clock management. It was a good turning point of the game.”

Offensively, it was one of the Huskies’

best performances of the year, with 44 points being a season-high.

After not being able to score in the first quarter in five of their first seven contests, senior Aregeros Turner started the game against Buffalo with a 97-yard kick return for a touchdown – his third of his career. Hagan’s field goal following Olootu’s interception gave them 10 points in the first quarter, tied for a season-best.

“I think it was huge,” Carey said of Turner’s kick return for a touchdown.

“His return sparked our entire team on the whole thing.”

The Huskies offense also has struggled at times at converting chances in the red zone, scoring on 20 of 27 (74.1 percent) appearances coming into the contest with Buffalo, which was ranked No. 10 in the conference. However, Northern Illinois scored on all four trips against the Bulls – including three touchdowns and the field goal by Hagan.

“Today it was better,” Carey said about the red zone offense. “That’s where it starts. I won’t make any big picture comments about it, but today it was good. Certainly something we worked on. Those are critical situations that we talk about all the time, and we certainly executed today.”

ally understanding and really knowing everything [about your linemates]. It just becomes feel. … Sometimes you just have to go out there and let things happen, and use your instincts. That really kicks in with guys that you play with for a long time.”

Through six games this season, Toews has no goals and two assists. But the latest incarnation of the Hawks’ top line – as unstoppable as the Anisimov line has been, whichever line has Toews in the middle has always been designated the Hawks’ “top line” – has been quite effective. Motte has scored with his two new linemates in each of the two games. And four of Panik’s goals have come with Toews on the ice.

Toews and Panik developed a nice rapport during the playoffs last spring, and it has carried over to the new season. The knock on Panik always has been his inconsistency, however, so he’ll need to prove the start isn’t a fluke before he’s permanently entrenched as a top-liner.

So far, Toews likes what he’s seen.

“He has all the tools,” Toews said.

“He can skate, he can hit, he can shoot.

[Last week] when he scored three goals [against Nashville], he wasn’t just scoring – he was skating well, he was running guys over, he was using his body, he was creating space. All those things that are tough to do every single night.

The biggest thing we’ve seen is that consistent focus, and that ability to deliver that. If he can bring that type of performance every night, then look out. He’s going to be one of the best in the league.

He’s got that raw ability, for sure.”

Of course, the left wing has been the bugaboo on that line. Motte doesn’t quite have the speed of a Sharp or a Saad, but he’s a sturdy body, strong on the puck, and plays the 200-foot game you have to in order to keep up with Toews. Saad said Friday that the key to playing with Toews is to work as hard as he does.

“The way he works and the way he competes, I think [the ideal left wing] is just someone to match that,” Saad said.

“They’ve tried a lot of different things, but the biggest thing is he’s got so much skill and so much competitive nature, you just try to match that intensity, and he’s going to find you. So find the open spots and try to read off of him.”

DeKalb’s season ends with regional final loss

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – With 1:24 left to play in the first half, McHenry lined up for a set piece that Connor Uhl headed into the goal to give the Warriors the lead heading into the break.

The goal was decisive, as McHenry won, 1-0, to win the Class 3A DeKalb Regional final Saturday afternoon.

In a game that lacked offensive excitement, DeKalb (8-9-4) had one shot and McHenry (16-5-2) had two shots on goal in the game. The better half of the game was a battle for possession in the middle of the field that included a few decent offensive runs by both teams.

The Barbs and the Warriors were neck and neck for 38:30 to start the game, but the late goal given up by the Barbs would end up being the one to end their

season.

“We battled against the wind for 38 and a half minutes, and it was an unfortunate goal to give up, DeKalb coach Brent McIntosh said. “It was an unfortunate goal to concede, but it didn’t break our spirit, but it certainly dug a hole that we weren’t able to get out of.”

CHICAGO – Jonathan Toews has had the best seat in the house to watch Artemi Panarin, Artem Anisimov and Patrick Kane toy with opponents over the past three games, racking up a combined seven goals and 10 assists in an emphatic reminder that the trio might just comprise the best line in hockey.

“They make it look easy,” Toews said. “When they get one or two, look out. They’re not stopping there. That’s when they’re just starting to feel it. It’s fun to watch.”

It’s fun to be on that line, too. Toews knows. Just a couple of years ago, he, Patrick Sharp and Marian Hossa formed arguably the most potent line in the league, skating circles around opponents, owning the puck and setting up camp in the offensive zone. And when Brandon Saad was up there instead of Sharp, the line was just as dangerous.

But since last summer, when Saad was sent to Columbus and Sharp was shipped to Dallas, Toews has had an eclectic crew of wingers on his left,

and now a new winger on his right. In a desperate and seemingly never-ending quest to find the right mix for his No. 1 center, coach Joel Quenneville has thrown anyone and everyone on the top line – from Marko Dano to Viktor Tikhonov to Ryan Garbutt to Teuvo Teravainen to Bryan Bickell to Andrew Shaw to Panarin to Vinnie Hinostroza to his latest left wing, rookie Tyler Motte. On his right, Toews now has Richard Panik – red-hot at the moment with a league-leading six goals through six games on just nine shots on goal – while Quenneville experiments with a new, more defensive-minded role for Hossa.

Through it all, Toews has remained one of the game’s top two-way centers.

He still commands a shut-down line as well as anybody in the league, and he still managed to pot 28 goals last season despite his motley crew of wingers.

But after years of Kane going through linemates like laundry, now it’s Toews who’s in search of chemistry and consistency.

Richtman edges Poorten but Spartans take second as team

sports@daily-chronicle.com BURLINGTON – One of Illinois cross country’s best rivalries turned into one of its best finishes as Kaneland’s Matt Richtman edged out Sycamore’s Stephen Poorten by two seconds to win the Class 2A Burlington Central Regional.

“It was a fun course,” Richtman said. “We got here Wednesday to look for surge points and plan out our race.

It had a lot of turns, which made it fun.

It was my favorite weather to run in.”

While the Knights just missed qualifying for the Class 2A Belvidere North Sectional next week, the Spartans took second. The Knights girls were also at the race and took third.

After the race, Richtman could be seen standing by the finish area, congratulating teammates and competitors on a hard-run race. Richtman said that he waits at the finish to shake hands because he has so much respect for what it takes to be a cross country runner.

“It takes guts,” Richtman said. “I wanna help people and congratulate them. I want them all to know that they did a great job.”

Poorten may have been able to challenge Richtman even further had he not stumbled around the 2.8-mile mark of the course. Anchored by his 14:54.71, the Spartans look to make some noise in the sectional meet. They placed four of their seven runners in the top 25 of today’s regional and took second overall.

“I think that we try to find each other early,” Poorten said of Richtman. “It’s pretty crazy that two of the best juniors in 2A are in DeKalb County. He [Richtman] is one of the nicest kids out here and we push one another. For us as a team, we need to trust our coach and follow our plan. As an individual, I need to be smart with my mileage.”

The Spartans have one of their best boys teams since the 2007 and 2008 teams that advanced at state. Coach Michael Lambdin said this bunch is different from those teams of eight and nine years ago.

“What really impresses me is our depth,” Lambdin said. “Our depth is amazing. We have 10 guys who can step into our lineup and get the

Roundup DeKalb boys, girls advance; H-BR’s Harrod, Chada win regional The DeKalb boys cross country team took second Saturday at the Class 3A Rockford Guilford Regional, with the girls taking third as both qualified for the West Aurora Sectional.

Christina Ryzhov finished fourth for the girls in 18:47, with teammate Katherine Olsen right behind in sixth in 19:09. The Barbs had 68 points, behind Hononegah (50) and Huntley (41).

Coach Mike Wolf said Ryzhov ran a good race, “Christina was a little more aggressive in the first mile today and that worked out well for her.

“The plan was for her to get in the top 5, and she executed that plan well.”

He added he was glad to see Olsen finish strong after running into health problems in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Meet.

“Great race for Katherine after not finishing at conference,” Wolf said. “She hung with our pack in the first half of the race and them moved up and looked great.”

The Red Raiders also won the boys race, finjob done. Going forward, today was about surviving. I thought we had a good race, but I think we have a better race in us. We’ll be getting Paul Rooten back next week, who is our No. 4 runner. That is going to make us even better.”

For the Kaneland boys team, their season ended at the regional. Despite advancing Richtman, Daniel Occhipinti, Andrew Kantola and Aidan Lodwig, the Knights finished in seventh place, 20 points behind the Burlington Central for the final qualifying spot.

“It’s a shock,” Kaneland coach Chad Cleary said. “I felt like our younger runners tried to step up. Aidan is a sophomore and we wouldn’t normally use him in this situation, but Sam [Webster] rolled his ankle on Monday and couldn’t compete today. They worked hard and passed a lot in the end, but we got lost a bit in the first mile or so and that set us back. That’s on me.”

On the girls side of the meet, Kaneland freshman Rachel Richtman took third overall with a time of 18:06.51.

The youngest sister of Kaneland runners Becca and Matt Richtman, Rachel definitely has made a name for

ishing 12 points ahead of the Barbs’ 51. DeKalb had six runners in the top 20 and four in the top 12 – Thomas Wuchte (sixth in 16:04), Jacob Trapp (seventh in 16:08), Ben Allen (11th in 16:22) and Riley Marks (12th in 16:23).

Wolf said the back of the Barbs pack – starting with Allen and Marks and including freshmen Aidan Donahue (15th in 16:25) and Emmanuel Yepiz (18th in 16:32) – pushed the Red Raiders late.

“Ben, Riley, Aidan and Manny really ran well together and were a force in the second half of the race,” Wolf said. “They went after Huntley in the second half and just came up short.”

CLASS 1A H-BR individuals win boys, girls races: They might not have raced with teams, but Hinckley-Big Rock seniors Audrey Harrod and Tanner Chada each won the Class 1A St. Bede Regional.

Chada dominated the race, winning in 15:32.09 – well ahead of Seneca’s Christopher Collet, who finished second in 16:11. herself this season.

“I just wanted to try and have a good race,” Rachel Richtman said.

“We had some surge points mapped out, which are areas on the course where you speed up for about eight seconds. You try to pick points where other teams may slow down. We just have to pack up and keep running hard.”

Becca Richtman is referred to as the “team mom” of the Kaneland girls team by sister Rachel.

“Grace Purcell was our third runner today, and I moved back to fourth,” Becca Richtman said. “It is awesome that we can move around like that and be more competitive as a team. At our conference meet, our 3, 4 and 5 runners came in one second a part. We just have to keep packing up.”

Kaneland coach Doug Ecker is excited with the progress his team has made.

“I don’t really talk about strategy too much with them,” Ecker said.

“With Rachel [Richtman], we just let her run. The other girls try to pack together and feed off of one another.

We’re not going to change anything

Harrod’s win was not quite as big as Chada’s, but still was comfortable – she finished in 19:25.17, more than 24 seconds ahead of Illinois Valley Central’s Katherine Schneider.

G-K girls advance, boys miss out: The Genoa-Kingston girls were seventh at the Winnebago Regional with 145 points, handily claiming the last qualifying spot for next week’s Oregon Sectional by 50 points. The boys took 10th.

Sarai Orozco led the Cog girls with a 18:56.59, good for 18th and a place ahead of teammate Anna Drendel, who finished in 19:00.18.

Richmond-Burton won the race by 15 points over Harvest Christian.

On the boys side, Harvest Christian won with 41 points, 20 ahead of Rockford Christian.

The Cogs finished with 284 points.

Freshman Ryan Wade was the top finisher with a 16:11.78, taking 42nd. The last individual qualifying spot went to Westminster Christian’s Tom Danner, who took 21st in 15:15.

The Spartans girls saw their season come to an end, but sophomore Hannah Kirby was able to qualify for the sectional as an individual.

“I feel really happy,” Kirby said. “I am very proud of everything I accomplished. I worked really hard in the summer just to make it here, but I am going to work even harder next summer to take the next step forward.”

Spartans girls coach Adam Bezinovich beamed with pride when talking about his team and their improvements.

“Our top two runners improved two to two-and-a-half minutes over their times from last year,” Bezinovich said. “I am confident that what we are doing is making us better. Getting girls out and getting them interested in the sport is what I’ll be focused on in the off season. We will have a few prospects coming up from the middle school next year. I think we can develop three more runners to run and support our top two this offseason.”

RAIDERS 33, JAGUARS 16: At Jacksonville, Florida, Latavius Murray scored twice in his return from turf toe, and the Raiders gave coach Jack Del Rio a victory against his former team.

Murray, who missed the past two games, finished with 59 yards on 18 carries. Michael Crabtree caught eight passes for 96 yards and a touchdown from Derek Carr, and Sebastian Janikowski kicked four field goals.

The result was the team’s most complete win of the season. Oakland improved to 4-0 on the road and moved to 5-2 overall.

The Jaguars (2-4) added more speculation about the future of coach Gus Bradley.

LIONS 20, REDSKINS 17: At Detroit, Matthew Stafford threw a go-ahead, 18-yard touchdown pass to Anquan Boldin with 16 seconds left.

The Lions (4-3) extended their winning streak to three games. The Redskins (4-3) had won four straight.

GIANTS 17, RAMS 10: At London, the Giants (4-3) capitalized on four interceptions of Case Keenum in the first NFL game played at London’s home of English rugby, a sold-out and raucous Twickenham Stadium.

Keenum, who finished 32 of 53 for 291 yards and one touchdown, has thrown an interception on the Rams’ final offensive play of the past three games. That likely will fuel debate on a potential quarterback change to overall

No. 1 draft pick Jared Goff for the Rams (3-4).

BENGALS 31, BROWNS 17: At Cincinnati, A.J. Green’s one-handed catch in the middle of an end zone scrum highlighted Cincinnati’s day full of big plays.

Green’s 48-yard touchdown catch on the final play of the first half helped the Bengals (34) regain their footing in the injury-depleted AFC North. The defending division champions piled up their most points since they beat the Browns (0-7), 37-3, in December. Jeremy Hill had a 74-yard touchdown run as part of his 168-yard effort, the best by a Bengals running back in seven years.

COLTS 34, TITANS 26: At Nashville, Andrew Luck threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Jack Doyle with 1:55 left to put Indianapolis ahead to stay, and the Colts (3-4) rallied to beat the Titans (3-4) for their 10th straight win against their AFC South rival.

JETS 24, RAVENS 16: At East Rutherford, New Jersey, Ryan Fitzpatrick replaced an injured Geno Smith and led the Jets (2-5) on three scoring drives, and a rejuvenated defense came up with two rare interceptions.

BUCCANEERS 34, 49ERS 17: At Santa Clara, California, Jameis Winston threw three touchdown passes, and Jacquizz Rodgers ran for 154 yards.

The Bucs (3-3) fell behind by 14 points early before scoring 27 straight to deal the Niners (1-6) their sixth straight loss for San Francisco’s longest losing streak since 2008.

TORONTO – Sebastian Giovinco had a goal and an assist and Toronto FC rallied to beat the Fire, 3-2, on Sunday.

Toronto missed out on a first-round playoff bye thanks to New York City FC’s home victory over Columbus.

Toronto will host the sixth-place Philadelphia Union in a knockout game Wednesday night.

Giovinco, last year’s MVP, finished the regular season with 17 goals and 15 assists in 28 games. Justin Morrow and Jonathan Osorio also scored for Toronto (14-9-11) Michael de Leeuw and John Goossens scored for the last-place Fire (7-17-10).

Shibutanis win dance, Japan’s Uno wins Skate America men’s

HOFFMAN ESTATES – Americans Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani won the ice dance title, while teammates Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue finished second Sunday at Skate America.

Japan’s Shoma Uno claimed the men’s championship earlier in the day, with

Americans Jason Brown and Adam Rippon finishing second and third in the opening event of the Grand Prix season.

The Shibutanis’ victory extends the United States’ streak of gold medals in ice dance at Skate America to eight; it has won 12 of the last 14. T

Lewis Hamilton wins U.S. Grand Prix to stay in F1 title chase

AUSTIN, Texas – Lewis Hamilton got the victory he needed to keep his Formula One championship hopes alive. Now he needs more, and he needs Mercedes teammate and rival Nico Rosberg to make a mistake or have a bad race.

Hamilton won his fourth U.S. Grand Prix in five years Sunday, bolting from pole position and cruising to an easy victory that cut Rosberg’s lead to 26 points with three races left.

Victories won’t be enough for the twotime defending champion to keep his title.

Rosberg still holds a relatively comfortable lead heading to next week’s race in Mexico City, where he won last year.

Strength training builds bone Dear Dr. K: I recently was diagnosed with osteopenia. My doctor advised strength training because it can help slow bone loss. How does it do that?

Dear Reader: Osteopenia is a thinning of the bones. It often is a precursor to osteoporosis, a more severe thinning of the bones. Osteoporosis puts you at risk for disabling, and sometimes debilitating, fractures.

Bones are filled with cells. Some cells build up new bone; other cells tear down old bone.

In most people, those two processes are in good balance. But in some people, particularly as they grow older, more bone gets torn down than built up.

To reverse that imbalance, and the osteopenia that comes from it, you need to stimulate the bone-building process.

Bone, like muscle, follows the “use it or lose it” rule.

One way to “use it” is to exercise.

When you exercise, particularly in strength training, it stimulates the formation of new bone. The tug of the muscles on the bone, and the weight that the bone is being asked to support, signal the bone-building cells to work harder.

Strength-training exercises build muscle by harnessing resistance – that is, an opposing force that muscles must strain against. Resistance can be supplied by your body weight, free weights, elasticized bands or specialized machines. No matter what kind of resistance you use, putting more than the usual amount of load on your muscles makes the bones stronger.

Strength training should target bones of the hips, spine and wrists, as

these are the bones that are most likely to fracture.

People with osteopenia, like you, or with osteoporosis have to exercise carefully. A person should not do exercises that could cause thin bones to fracture.

For example, I tell my patients to protect their spine.

This means avoiding activities and exercises that require you to bend your spine, especially to lift a weight. Bowling is a common example.

I also advise my patients to avoid freeweight exercises and machines that put added stress on the spine. These include some leg-press machines, leg raises performed lying down, and squats done with weight bars resting on the shoulders. A person with thinning spine bones needs to do strength-training exercises that build strong core muscles.

I don’t know your age, but it’s possible that you’re thinking as you read this: “I’m too old to do strength training, to work out with machines and weights and such.” That’s wrong. Supervised weight training in older people builds muscle and bone.

Finally, don’t stop with strength training. Add a few balance exercises to your routine to reduce your risk of falls.

am a college student on the East Coast. A dear friend of mine who attends the same university goes home on break to the West Coast. She was raped at a party. Over the summer break she found out she was pregnant and had an abortion. She’s now suffering from some intense emotional and psychological problems and sees a campus therapist.

That someone would reach over you to type something into a document you are working on seems to me to be rude, but your employer may have been trying to add something or correct errors, and thought it would be a faster way of getting the job done than trying to explain it to you. It might reassure you to discuss this with some of the other secretaries, ask if this is common and whether it bothers them, and let them advise you.

At the bridge table, a goulash deal beats five contracts played in no-trump. You presort the cards into their suits, cut the deck without shuffling, and deal in groups. I do threes and fours, but some prefer a three and two fives. The deals often have very long suits. The one in the diagram was played in a social game last month. What do you think of the auction? How did five hearts doubled fare?

It is rare to open with a one-bid in goulash. West’s Unusual No-trump was weird; since partner rated to have a major two-suiter, just bidding some number of diamonds would have been preferable. East hid in the bushes over three spades.

Then South, who was preparing to double five diamonds (it probably would have failed by one trick), was pleasantly surprised to hear partner raise hearts. East finally revealed his major-orientated hand.

If West had led a club, the contract would have failed, but she selected the diamond king. Declarer looked at the diamond void and joked, “Ruff it!”

South took the first trick and played four rounds of hearts. East won, cashed his second heart trick, then tried a sneaky low-spade lead.

However, declarer knew that East, who couldn’t have a second diamond, had started with 7-5-1-0 distribution. South discarded a diamond.

When he won the trick on the board, he conceded only two trump tricks and claimed for plus 850.
