When the cat’s away, the mouse doesn’t play It’s tough being a full-time working mother and wife.

Some days, I am so exhausted that I just want to go home and get in my comfy clothes and be a couch potato. But if I dare do that, the entire preparation for the next day would be spoiled.

Not being organized would fuel high levels of stress, and let’s face it, no one likes to put that added pressure upon themselves.

So I muster the energy, with the help of a little coffee, and buck up to make lunches, do dishes and, of course, play with Hannah Jo. When my husband’s away on a business trip, this mouse has no time to play.

Life at our house can be a balancing act.

He usually will cook dinner and read books with our daughter, so I can get some things done.

He also prepares her bottle and puts her pajamas on for bed.

When he is away, I feel as if I’m a single parent. All those added responsibilities are on me to complete. And if it’s garbage night, or I have to empty the dishwasher, then forget it – I become a stressed out fool and I hate it.

We have been married 81/2 years. One would think I would have learned by now to adjust my organizational skills, but I have not.

Plus, it is not just that. Without his presence, there is a huge void in the house.

I don ’t sleep very well when he’ s gone. I feel as if I have to be on high alert although we have an alarm system and two huge

I know that our daughter is affected by his traveling as well. She throws more temper tantrums, doesn’t listen as well, and what kills me the most is that she is always asking, “When is daddy coming home?”

Some wives have told me that they love when their husbands are away so they can “play.” I assume playing means spending money and forgetting about the chores.

When my husband is gone, I feel overwhelmed and underpaid. I would much rather him be at home. Not only helping me with everyday responsibilities, but also the companionship.

There is a silver lining to all of this: When my husband does return home, it’s like a family reunion.

We hug each other, sometimes I still cry with relief and Hannah Jo runs into her daddy’s arms. I know he missed us as much as we missed him.

TODAY’S TALKER Move along, Bozo: Mississippi county bans clowns for now

DEKALB, Miss. – A Mississippi county has had enough of the creepy clown craze, at least until after Halloween.

Kemper County supervisors this week banned people from wearing any clown costume, mask or makeup in public.

The local law carries a $150 penalty, and it will be lifted Nov. 1.

The Kemper County Messenger reported that supervisors President Johnny Whitsett said it’s

a matter of public safety because people could react badly if they get scared by a clown in their yard.

The county along the Alabama line has a population of about 10,000.

Lee Rowland, an American Civil Liberties Union attorney in New York, said the First Amendment protects most clothing choices.

She also said it’s “a ridiculous use of government authority .... to dictate which Halloween costumes people can wear.”

NIU celebrates 110 years of homecoming with 2016 Northern Lights Parade

By STEPHANIE MARKHAM smarkham@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Tim Beckett has lived in DeKalb since he enrolled at Northern Illinois University in 1995 and later met his wife in Sycamore. However, Thursday night was his first time attending an NIU homecoming parade.

“I don’t know how I have not known about it,” he said. “I mean, it’s pretty standard every year.”

The 2016 Homecoming Northern Lights Parade marched from the NIU Art Building through downtown DeKalb. Participants dressed up and decorated floats with the theme “Huskies Through the Decades,” which recognizes 110 years of homecoming.

Beckett danced to the parade music with his three young children while they watched for their older sister to go past with her Girl Scout troop.

“They love it; they’re having a great time,” he said. “I was a little concerned because it was so late, but it doesn’t matter.”

While his children enjoyed getting candy and hearing the police sirens, Beckett said he was having fun as well and was glad he made it.

“I am missing the Cubs game, but they’re winning,” he said, checking the score on his phone. “We’re up, 1-0, so as long as we’ve got technology, I’m good.”

Andrew Willey, who was born and raised in DeKalb, and his friend Joshua Danay, who has lived in DeKalb for five years, also were attending the parade for the first time.

Willey said they thought homecoming was next weekend, and they came upon the parade route as they were driving home.

“We kind of got stuck in the middle of it, so we thought we’d watch it,” Willey said.

Although the parade was not in their original plans, Danay said he liked seeing how it united the community.

“It’s kind of a nice little thing that brings DeKalb together,” Danay said.

“It’s cool to see the whole community come together for our college, our fire department, local police, sororities, and see what our school and our town is all about.”

After the parade, NIU’s a cappella groups performed songs at the intersection of Third Street and Lincoln Highway.

The Harmelodics, consisting of female singers, performed a mash-up of “Jessie’s Girl” by Rick Springfield and “Stacy’s Mom” by Fountains of Wayne, which they called, “Jessie’s Mom.” They went on to sing “Sk8er Boi” by Avril Lavigne.

The NIU Huskie Hunks, consisting of male singers, performed “Movin’ Out” by Billy Joel and “Land of Opportunity” by A Great Big World.

Sharon Carlson, a sophomore at NIU and member of the Harmelodics, said her favorite part of the parade was performing with her a cappella group.

“It’s a homecoming event, which means there’s a lot of students here, so it’s really nice to get our name out there and perform for our fellow Huskies,” she said.

Carlson said her group practices twice a week for about two hours until

they get the songs to sound how they like.

“I actually didn’t even know about a cappella when I came to NIU, and it’s a huge part of my life now,” she said. “It’s a really great opportunity to get involved and do something I am so passionate about.”

April Kutz, a senior at NIU, marched with the Newman Catholic Center and said she enjoyed seeing a parade during the nighttime.

“This is the first year I went to the parade, and I didn’t know it was at night,” she said. “My high school’s was during the day, so I think that’s really neat. I love how they lit up downtown.”

McCullough wants to clear his name

Kathy Sigman Chapman’s eyewitness testimony was used to convict McCullough at trial. Chapman was with Maria on Dec. 3, 1957, shortly before she was abducted and saw the man that gave her a piggyback ride.

Steblay’s testimony would serve to debunk Chapman’s identification of McCullough, Ainsworth said.

“There’s a host of scientific reasons why we should put less weight in Kathy’s identification of Jack,” he said.

Ainsworth and the team at the Exoneration Project – a free legal clinic at the University of Chicago Law School dedicated to representation of the wrongfully convicted – also plan to introduce evidence that two of the three jailhouse informants who testified against McCullough at trial were given incentives by prosecutors and police to do so and that those incentives were hidden from the judge hearing the case.

In a 28-page motion filed earlier this month, Ainsworth went through what he and the team see as the evidence that shows McCullough is in-

nocent.

Brady also noted that state law requires the court in considering a certificate of innocence to take into account the difficulties of proof caused by the passage of time, the death or unavailability of witnesses, the destruction of evidence and other factors.

“The judge here is clearly saying that he’s keeping an open mind and wants to hear the evidence and wants to make a determination based on the evidence, not supposition, not what’s happened before, but what

SYCAMORE – Jack McCullough wants a judge to clear his name.

At a hearing Thursday, an attorney representing the 76-year-old Seattle man told DeKalb County Circuit Court Judge William Brady that McCullough is innocent in the 1957 kidnapping and slaying of Maria Ridulph, a 7-year-old Sycamore girl.

“He is simply a man who wishes to be rid of the stain of this conviction,” said Russell Ainsworth, an attorney with the Exoneration Project.

McCullough was convicted in connection with Ridulph’s killing in 2012 and sentenced to life in prison; his murder conviction had been upheld by an Illinois appellate court in 2015.

He didn’t appear in court Thursday; members of Ridulph’s family sat in the gallery.

He was freed in April after DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack concluded that FBI reports from the time of the girl’s disappearance, combined with new evidence showing the location of a Rockford pay phone from which McCullough is believed to have placed a collect call that evening, proved that McCullough had an alibi.

Brady vacated McCullough’s conviction and the charges against McCullough were dismissed.

Ainsworth told the judge that he intends to show that McCullough is innocent and had nothing to do the crime.

The judge asked Ainsworth several questions about the laws regarding a certificate of innocence, including whether the certificate would bar further prosecution in the case.

When Brady vacated McCullough’s conviction in April, the charges were dismissed without prejudice, leaving open the possibility that they could be reinstated in the future.

“So when we say a ‘certificate of innocence’ what we’re really saying is a ‘certificate of innocence at this point in time so he can go to the Court of Claims and get a sum of money,’ ” Brady said.

State law caps the amount awarded by the Illinois Court of Claims to those who were wrongfully convicted at $85,350 for those who serve five years or fewer behind bars – as McCullough did.

Brady will consider McCullough’s request for a certificate of innocence at a hearing at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 5.

At that hearing, Ainsworth said

Charles Ridulph, Maria’s older brother, didn’t attend Thursday’s hearing. His sister, Pat Quinn, Maria’s older sister, sat in the gallery with her husband, Bill, and others.

Her brother, who has served as the point person for the family inside and outside of court for years, had “washed his hands of this,” she said.

In some ways, it was better he wasn’t there, Quinn said.

“It makes me sick,” she said. “I felt very strongly we need our own representation.”

The Ridulph family has been opposed to Schmack’s actions in the case. They believe that McCullough is guilty and that Schmack should be representing their interests as victims of a heinous crime.

“I just wanted to stand up and shout, but I can’t,” Quinn said.

The family’s biggest concern is that something will happen that will make it impossible to retry McCullough.

Ainsworth spent at least 30 minutes after the hearing talking with Quinn about the case, the evidence and what was next.

“Frankly, when I saw the family, I didn’t know how they’d react toward me. I’m the advocate for the person that they believe killed their loved one. I was really heartened that they truly wanted to know what the truth is here. And the first thing that I got was a hug. ... That was moving and special,” Ainsworth said. “I think we share an interest in the truth. We may differ about our conclusions, but we both want to know what happened and is Jack McCullough guilty of this crime.”

Born: May 15, 1945 Died: October 16, 2016 Lynn Colby 71 passed away peacefully at his Lake home in Monticello, IN. surrounded by his loving family after a 1 ½ year courageous battle against pancreatic cancer.

Lynn was raised in Shabbona, IL and spent his early years in Banking.

Shortly thereafter he founded the successful Northwest Indiana Fence Co. in Valparaiso, IN. The success of his business enabled him to enjoy an early retirement. He was a member of the First United Methodist

Church, Valparaiso Country Club, Valparaiso Rotary Club and Home Builders Assoc. He also served in the Army rank SP4, 11th Field Artillery 2nd Battalion, Fort Campbell, KY and was a Vietnam Veteran.

Lynn is survived by his wife, Karen (Thompson) of Monticello; Daughter, Stefanie (Jerry) Davenport and son, Damon of Valparaiso; Grand-children, Katie, Olivia, Emily and Macey; Sister, Connie (Frank) Pardridge and their children and Grand-children, Terry & Debbie (Paige and Cole), Curt & Vanessa ( Abby and Dane), Doug (Nina and Heather (Tim Barnes); Brother, Greg (Dixie) Colby their children and Grand-children, Chad, Darci (Thomas) and their children Max, Jonas, Annika & Stella.

Lynn loved Golfing, Boating, Motor homing and spending time at his seasonal home in Venice, FL. He also loved his family and friends with a passion. He was always ready to laugh, tell stories and have a great time.

He was the light of his family’s lives and we will miss him deeply.

Jon was a senior at Michigan State University studying International Relations with a minor in Spanish. His intention was to join the Marines upon graduation.

Jon was a 2013 graduate of Sycamore High School where he had been a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Advisory Forum, Marching Band and Pep Club. He was a Student Ambassador and a representative on the Homecoming Court.

Jon began working at Eggsclusive Café in Sycamore when he was 16. He continued to work there during college breaks and during the summer months. Recently he also was working for K & T Electric in Michigan.

Jon was an avid reader with a passion for the military and history. He enjoyed following several sports teams, especially football and baseball. He was fiercely patriotic and had a love for small town life. He was honored to play Taps on his trumpet for local Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day celebrations. He traveled extensively with his family and enjoyed two recent backpacking adventures to Wyoming with his uncles and cousins. He made yearly trips with his mother and sister to rural Nebraska where they would enjoy working on his cousin’s farm, branding cattle, attending the rodeo and spending time with family.

and community members as a generous, selfless, and truly respectable young man.

His name was synonymous with compassion and kindness among his friends.

He is survived by his mother, Nancy Korth; and sister, Mary Cordes of Sycamore; father, Christopher Cordes of Chicago; several maternal aunts and uncles, Barbara (Bill) Starkweather of Naperville, Susan Metcalf of Sycamore, James (Shelley) Korth of Maple Park, Daniel (Mary Fran) Korth of Elburn; cousins, Kristen (Mark) DeBlock, Amy (Eric) Knee, Melissa Starkweather, Karyn (Jerry) Burch, Jill (Eric) Mannheim, Chad (Elizabeth) Metcalf, Jessie (Dave) Issel, Katy Korth, Sarah (Luis) Rivera, Lisa (Chris) DeSilva, Annie Korth; second cousins, Ellie and Mikey DeBlock, Austin, Nolan, and Cali Burch, Jacob, Katelyn, and Joseph Knee, Weston Issel, and Adalyn Mannheim.

While his short life will leave us heartbroken, there is comfort in knowing that Jon positively impacted so many lives and that he is now among those who have gone before.

He is preceded in death by his beloved maternal grandfather, Gerald Korth and grandmother Gladys Korth.

A celebration of Jon’s life following interment at Elmwood Cemetery in Sycamore is planned for the spring of 2017.

SYCAMORE – Voluntary Action Center is a step closer to expanding its meal delivery programs thanks to a $92,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation.

VAC unveiled two new “hot shot” vehicles at a ceremony Thursday at its Sycamore facility, 1606 Bethany Road. The food delivery vehicles are equipped with hot and cold compartments to ensure proper temperature regulation for food transported as part of VAC’s Meals on Wheels program. A grant from the Walmart Foundation’s State Giving Program was used to buy the vehicles.

“Meals on Wheels continues to a good service to seniors and others who cannot prepare their own meals,” DeKalb Mayor John Rey said. “Citizens receive benefit from Walmart partnering with this generous support.”

Rey said the donation underscored the importance of public-private partnerships.

The vehicles allow VAC to replace part of its aging fleet of vehicles and expand meal delivery ser-

vice to rural areas that previously were too far away for safe delivery, according to a news release.

In addition to food service for the Meals on Wheels program, VAC plans to use the vehicles to serve meals to students during the summer as part of the free and reduced lunch program. VAC serves meals to several sites in DeKalb County, including Camp Power in University Village, as part of that effort, VAC Executive Director Ellen Rogers said.

Voluntary Action Center, a nonprofit organization, provides transportation and nutritional services in DeKalb, LaSalle, Putnam, Bureau and Kendall counties.

Rogers said the Meals on Wheels program would be expanded once the state starts paying it bills and service cuts have been restored.

“At the Walmart Foundation, we know how important it is to have access to healthy, affordable food,” said Jim Haager, manager of the Rochelle Walmart store.

“We’re proud to support VAC and their efforts to help the residents of DeKalb, LaSalle, Putnam, Bureau counties live better.”

State senators aim to ban campaigning by directors

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois state senators from different parties have introduced legislation that would ban state agency directors and other high-level gubernatorial appointees from campaigning for political candidates.

The proposal wouldn’t put new restrictions on officials’ financial donations to campaigns but would bar them from appearing in commercials or participating in political events. It was modeled after the federal Hatch Act, a 1939 law that limits the political activities of federal employees, and similar laws exist in 43 other states.

Democratic state Sen. Andy Manar and Republican state Sen. Sam McCann announced the proposal Wednesday, saying it’s an important expansion of Illinois’ ethics laws.

“I’m of the opinion that agency directors should not spend their time campaigning,” Manar said. “They should

spend their time managing the agencies that they have been entrusted to run and to manage when the Senate confirmed their appointments.”

He said the measure is similar to restrictions at the federal level and in other states.

The lawmakers said the issue isn’t about any one party or election but that they decided to push for the change after various cabinet members named by Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner recently appeared in campaign materials on behalf of GOP candidates.

“This is good government,” McCann said. “This is what we should do regardless of who’s in control.”

A spokeswoman for Rauner said the governor “welcomes any discussion to reform our political process.”

Illinois unemployment rate holds at 5.5 percent

CHICAGO – State officials said the unemployment rate in Illinois held steady at 5.5 percent in September and the number of jobs in the state grew.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security said Thursday in its monthly unemployment report that the state added 7,400 jobs since August and has added 43,400 jobs since September 2015.

The report noted that the largest job gains were in service-related sectors and that manufacturing firms and financial-activities companies cut more jobs than they added.

Department Director Jeff Mays said the state’s job growth remains “uneven.”

Chicago teachers union delegates OK contract

CHICAGO – The Chicago Teachers Union House of Delegates has endorsed a tentative contract agreement reached with the city’s school district.

According to the union, the delegates Wednesday approved the four-year deal by a 2-1 ratio. The contract proposal now will go before the union’s approximately 28,000 members Oct. 27 for final approval.

The four-year proposal averted a strike that would have affected about 390,000 students. It includes cost-of-living increases in the third and fourth years. It doesn’t require current teachers to pay more toward their pensions – a change Chicago Public Schools was seeking and the union rejected.

Future CPS hires would pick up that additional pension cost. The tentative agreement also addresses class sizes for younger grades by assigning an assistant to any class with more than 32 students.

Growing calls for railroad probe in wake of crash

TRENTON, N.J. – New Jersey’s commuter railroad is facing growing calls for more scrutiny at federal and state levels amid questions about its safety after one of its trains crashed into a station last month, killing a woman on the platform and injuring more than 100.

New Jersey lawmakers on Thursday voted to grant themselves subpoena power as they begin to look into the Sept. 29 crash at Hoboken Terminal.

And U.S. Sens. Bob Menendez and Cory Booker, both of New Jersey, on Wednesday asked federal officials to investigate safety and funding issues within NJ Transit.

Trump says he’ll accept election results if he wins The ASSOCIATED PRESS DELAWARE, Ohio – Mocking his critics, Donald Trump pledged Thursday to fully accept the outcome of next month’s presidential election – if he wins. The Republican said he reserved the right to contest questionable results, deepening his unsubstantiated assertions that the race against Hillary Clinton could be rigged against him.

Trump’s comments came a day after his stunning refusal in the final presidential debate to say whether he would concede to Clinton if he loses. His resistance, threatening to undermine the essence of American democracy, was roundly rejected by fellow Republicans.

Arizona Sen. John McCain, the 2008 GOP nominee, called the peaceful transfer of power “the pride of our country.”

“I didn’t like the outcome of the 2008 election. But I had a duty to concede, and I did so without reluctance,” McCain said in a lengthy statement.

“A concession isn’t just an exercise in graciousness. It is an act of respect for the will of the American people, a respect that is every American leader’s first responsibility.”

With the presidential race slipping away from him, Trump has repeatedly raised the specter of a rigged election, despite no evidence of widespread voter fraud heading toward Election Day or in previous presidential contests. His top advisers and running mate Mike Pence have tried to soften his comments, only to watch helplessly as he plunges ahead.

Asked in Wednesday’s debate if he would accept the election results and concede to Clinton if he loses, Trump said: “I will tell you at the time.

I will keep you in suspense.”

Clinton slammed Trump’s comments as “horrifying,” and fellow Democrats piled on Thursday.

His wife, first lady Michelle Obama, told 7,000 Clinton supporters in Republican-voting Arizona on Thursday that Trump was threatening to “ignore our voices and reject the outcome of this election.” She said that’s the same as “threatening the very idea of America itself.”

Trump’s comments overshadowed his attempts to diminish Clinton’s credibility during the debate. He entered the contest desperate to reshape the race and attract new voters who are deeply skeptical of his brash temperament and fitness for office, but it appeared unlikely he accomplished those goals.

Campaigning Thursday in must-win Ohio, Trump tried to make light of the situation.

“I would like to promise and pledge to all of my voters and supporters and to all of the people of the United States that I will totally accept the results of this great and historic presidential election,” he said. After letting that vow hang in the air for a few seconds, he added, “If I win.”

The Republican nominee said he would accept “a clear election result” but reserved his right to “contest or file a legal challenge” if he loses.

He brushed off the likelihood

of that happening with a confident prediction that “we’re not going to lose.”

Yet numerous Republican leaders concede Trump is heading for defeat barring a significant shift in the campaign’s closing days. The GOP’s top concern now is salvaging its majority in the Senate, followed closely by worries over the Republicans’ once comfortable grip on the House.

“The landscape has gotten a lot tougher for Republicans in the House,” said Liesl Hickey, a Republican strategist involved some of those races. In Pennsylvania, Sen. Pat Toomey said Trump’s comments were “irresponsible.”

Maine Gov. Paul LePage called Trump’s comments an “absolute stupid move” and advised him to “take your licks and let’s move on.”

U.S. elections are run by local elected officials – Republicans, in many of the most competitive states.

Trump’s campaign pointed to Al Gore and George W. Bush in 2000 as an example of why it would be premature for Trump to say he’d acquiesce Nov. 8.

That election, which played out for weeks until the Supreme Court weighed in, didn’t center on allegations of fraud, but on proper vote-counting after an extremely close outcome in Florida led to a mandatory recount.

Sugar tax a bad idea ​ oral superiors are at it again M The sugar tax is back.

It was rejected earlier this year by the General Assembly, but proponents of levying significant new taxes on sweetened beverages have narrowed their aim. Instead of the state, the focus now is on Cook County.

Board Chairwoman Toni Preckwinkle last week proposed a penny-an-ounce tax on sweetened drinks, including soda, lemonade and sports drinks. It also would cover artificial sweeteners and drinks sold from fountains as well as in containers.

A 12-ounce can of Coke would cost an extra 12 cents. A six-pack of the same size container would cost consumers an additional 72 cents. A case of 24 cans would set a consumer back nearly $3.

In other words, Preckwinkle is asking for a lot.

Generally, these proposals are put forward as health measures. Soft drink critics charge that too many people drink too many soft drinks and, as a consequence, become obese. But millions of people who consume soft drinks don’t become obese, either.

That, however, is not a great sales pitch. It smacks too much of – and rightfully so – nanny state government where the moral superiors dictate the choices of those they consider their moral inferiors.

So Preckwinkle is touting her tax plan as part of a crime-fighting package that will raise $174 million and be used to finance law enforcement measures and threatened budget cuts if it’s not adopted.

“This budget, instead, calls not only for dedication to criminal justice reform, but a significant investment on public safety,” she said.

Of course, that estimate of $174 million in new revenue is strictly speculation. People aren’t stupid.

If this proposal becomes law, it’s only a matter of time before consumers drive across the county line to a store in a neighboring county or across the state line to Indiana.

When they do, they’ll buy their soft drinks and everything else they want.

These sugar drink proposals have been introduced in states and cities across the country. One of the latest to adopt this approach was Philadelphia, where the measure faces a court challenge.

Essentially, sugar tax supporters are trying to do to the soft drink supporters what anti-tobacco groups have done to smokers – make products so expensive people won’t buy them.

It’s a bully-boy style of doing business, one that puts many people off. But it’s becoming an increasingly common approach for those who know best what choices other people should make.

To the Editor: I believe that DeKalb County has been well-served the past four years by State’s Attorney Richard Schmack.

Schmack has been a strong proponent of reducing our county jail population with diversion programs such as the drug court, bond reduction for qualified people, and the new mental health court.

This is not only cost effective for the county taxpayers, but it is better for the accused and their families. While serving time in jail, defendants can lose their jobs and their absence is also destructive to their families.

Mr. Schmack has brought a high level of professionalism and admirable ethics to our DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office. He has made hard judgments without regard to the political implications of those decisions.

That is why I believe that he should be retained as DeKalb County state’s attorney. If he is re-elected, I am sure that he will do the job right.

City’s plan to demolish Otto’s building raises questions

To the Editor: I have become increasingly concerned about decisions made in secret by the city of DeKalb. Mayor John Rey promised that his administration would be

open and transparent. Time and time again, we see that the mayor has had involvement in questionable ventures such as College Town Partners.

One example of a lack of transparency is the city’s long-term interest in the former Otto’s building at 112-118 E. Lincoln Highway. Recently, the city of DeKalb had held a series of tax increment financing discussions in the TIF-affected wards.

These appeared, on the surface, to be good sessions. Not once did spending TIF money on the demolition of the Otto’s building come up in the session I attended. The city is in court to demolish the building, which likely will destroy the neighboring buildings.

The source of funds for a large demolition project likely will have to be TIF. I requested the structural engineering reports in a FOIA and was told none existed. The only report of structural integrity was made by a local building contractor – Steve Irving, who also has done significant business with the city.

The core of my concern is that TIF money is going to be committed without a vote from the City Council for this demolition. Does the city have a buyer for this property, or are we going to have another empty site downtown?

Another point of concern is who directed the city attorney to work on this? The mayor? The city manager? The City Council? The city attorney is supposed to work by the direction of council. Where is the direction?

the University of Idaho and Columbia University found that more than half of the increased dryness in Western forests, and of the lengthened fire season, is because of man-made global warming.

Climate change has nearly doubled the area hit by forest fire since the mid-1980s, increasing fire-prone areas by 16,000 square miles. So picture a swath of dry brush and dead trees the size of Connecticut and Massachusetts, or, in California terms, four times the size of Los Angeles County. Now light a match.

Clearly this is an urgent concern, and one that California has sought urgently to deal with. This state has 20 million acres of forest,

nearly half of which are vulnerable to catastrophic wildfire because of dense vegetation and tens of millions of dying trees. In the past four years, the state has spent $250 million on fire prevention, with $33 million more in cap-and-trade money for forest health projects.

Lawmakers have directed utilities and state energy agencies to contract for electricity with biomass plants that pull clean energy from deadwood.

But while the state struggles to do its part, federal dollars have become scarcer. The U.S. Forest Service, for instance, has had to cut $200 million in recent years from programs to thin forests and conduct controlled burns because so much of its budget now goes to

fighting the fires themselves.

California has borne the brunt of those cuts, despite the expanses of federal land here. And a onetime federal allotment of $662 million last fiscal year did little to meet the long-term need, which is overwhelming.

It is an election year, and Republicans who dominate the House and Senate may be preoccupied with a different catastrophe – the one at the top of their ticket. But it is a disgrace that Congress is gridlocked on this problem.

While Donald Trump consumes the nation’s bandwidth, and Washington, D.C., fiddles, the West burns.

And then Michelle Obama showed up Hillary Clinton’s candidacy has sparked endless commentary about her gender, and rightly so.

She is increasingly likely to be the first female president of the United States. That’s a big deal – even if the thought of it makes you curl up into the fetal position, you poor thing.

Two other women have become increasingly visible in this presidential race: Michelle Obama and Melania Trump. In word and deed, the contrast in their recent public appearances in response to the video revealing Donald Trump’s admission that he has engaged in sexual-predator behavior illustrates how far women have come – and how desperately some want to cling to our oppressive past.

Anyone paying even the slightest bit of attention to this race knows by now what Trump said about women on the decade-old video first revealed by The Washington Post. The quickest of summaries: He believes he is entitled to touch, kiss and grope any woman he finds attractive, without her consent.

The public backlash has been swift and enduring. Trump’s dismissal of the recorded conversation as “locker room talk” and his repeated mocking of the growing

What’s a campaign to do?

On Monday, his wife, Melania, agreed to talk to CNN’s Anderson Cooper.

This is the politics of old. When all else fails, summon the wife.

I hesitate to lay claim to anything exceptional about me as a journalist, but this is a fact of my life and requires full disclosure: I am married to Sen. Sherrod Brown.

I know a little bit about the prevailing low and constricting expectations for women married to politicians. Not because of my husband.

He knew what he was getting into when he proposed to a newspaper columnist, and it wasn’t blind compliance.

This is an archaic notion of political spousedom cherished by politicos and too many of my colleagues in the media who continue to regard candidates’ wives as either a prop or a problem.

Melania Trump broke with her usual practice as the mute go-along

to blame another man for egging on her husband and to double down on the “locker room” defense.

Anderson Cooper: “He described it as locker room talk. ... You’ve sort of alluded to that, as well. Is that what it is to you, just locker room talk?”

Melania Trump: “Yeah, it’s kind of two teenage boys. Actually, they should behave better, right?”

Cooper: “He was 59.”

Trump: “Correct. And sometimes I said I have two boys at home. I have my young son and my husband, so, but I know how some men talk, and that’s how I saw it, yes.”

As Cooper stressed, Donald Trump was 59. That’s my age right now. I keep thinking about that and all that I am expected to know by this age.

And let’s be clear: A teenager admitting to the behavior that Donald Trump was bragging about would be just as predatory – and the behavior would be just as illegal.

Fortunately, first lady Michelle Obama knew that the only response to Trump’s behavior was to condemn it.

Last week, she took the stage in New Hampshire. With a tremor in her voice, she opened her heart and delivered a speech as breathtakingly real as it gets.

“I have to tell you that I can’t stop thinking about this,” she said.

“It has shaken me to my core in a way that I couldn’t have predicted. ... This wasn’t just locker room banter. This was a powerful individual speaking freely and openly about sexually predatory behavior. ... And I have to tell you that I listen to all of this and I feel it so personally – and I’m sure that many of you do, too, particularly the women – the shameful comments about our bodies, the disrespect of our ambitions and intellect, the belief that you can do anything you want to a woman.”

This is the face – and the voice – of the new political spouse. She is using all of her power to help other women lay claim to their own, and she is going to help elect the first woman to be president of the United States.

After watching the first lady’s speech, I couldn’t help but think it’s probably a good thing her successor will not be a woman. We’re going to need some time to get over how much we’re going to miss Michelle Obama.

The massive Soberanes fire near Big Sur – perhaps the most expensive in U.S. history – was finally contained last week after burning for nearly three months. Wildfire season is year-round, and towering firenadoes are now commonplace.

So far this year, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has dealt with 5,340 wildfires covering nearly 150,000 acres, an increase of 27 percent compared to last year. Record high temperatures and bark beetles have fueled the fire risk.

Genoa woman takes first at quilt show DAILY CHRONICLE Debbie Howie of Genoa won a first-place ribbon at the 2016 Quilt and Fiber Art Show Oct. 1 to 2 in DeKalb.

There were 186 entries overall. Her quilt, “Tulip Time,” was entered in the Bed Quilts, Mixed/Other Techniques, Longarm Machine Quilted category.

Howie bought the kit for this quilt at the Chicago Quilt Show in 2008. She was intimidated with this type of quilting and didn’t try it until 2013. This quilt took three months of working on it almost daily to complete. It is an in-the-hoop applique and embroidered technique. After completing the machine embroidered applique, it was then sewn together.

Howie had Carol Linder of Quilting by Carol in Hampshire quilt this for her. Howie wanted to mimic the design of the flowers in the quilting.

The quilt was judged on design and workmanship.

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb, 158 N. Fourth St., will host its second annual Spookathon on Oct. 29.

Featuring a kid-designed, kid-run haunted house, all the funds raised from the requested donations of $10 a person or $25 a family will go to UUFD’s children’s program.

New this year are an opening concert by UUFD’s own Ordinary “Monsters” music group, beginning at 4:30 p.m., craft tables and a spider web challenge. Returning will be spooky stories for kids and adults, card readings in the library, a tasty and creepy bake sale and the costume contest.

The costume contest has a separate entry fee to fund great prizes.

‘Mystic Visions’ author slated to speak at worship service DAILY CHRONICLE Quentin Young, author of the book, “Mystic Visions: Black Elk’s Great Vision Clarified,” will be a guest speaker during the 10 a.m. Sunday worship service at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb. He also will participate in a book-signing and talk at noon.

Young was born to Rosemary Likens Young and Mayo Beckford Young. His mother’s side of the family has Lakota (Sioux) Sicangu (Brule) lineage and his father’s side is Welsh.

His mother’s grandmother was Eliza Kathrin Milton, a full blood Sicangu Lakota, born in 1854 in Nebraska. In 1855, a soldier took Eliza from the battlefield of the Blue Water Fight and gave her to the Miltons of Missouri to raise.

Young has been involved in the Lakota spiritual way of life since

1950 at age 6; by 1989 he began keeping a canupa (pipe). He is a 21-year sun dancer and lead helper to the sundance intercessor and chief. The dance is currently located in Putnam County, Indiana.

Young has participated in all of the seven rites of the Oglala Lakota (Sioux) ceremonies.

Since 1990, he has studied Nicholas Black Elks Great Vision of the nation’s hoop and the flowering tree.

From 1998 through 2004, he lectured at the College of DuPage, presenting a study of Black Elk’s Great Vision through a three-hour accredited course in social science called “Native Americans and their Mystic Visions.” He also has lectured at several colleges and universities throughout Illinois with respect to Black Elk’s vision and the Lakota spiritual way of life.

By BETH HARRIS The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Jon Lester pitched seven sharp innings, Addison Russell hit a tiebreaking homer and the Cubs moved one win from their first World Series trip in 71 years by beating the Los Angeles Dodgers, 8-4, Thursday.

The Cubs grabbed a 3-2 lead in the NL Championship Series and will have two chances to wrap up that elusive pennant back home at Wrigley Field.

The first comes Saturday night in Game 6, when Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw faces major league ERA leader Kyle Hendricks.

Emerging star Javier Baez was in the middle of everything for the Cubs, a common theme this October. The second baseman made a sensational defensive play when the game still was close in the seventh, and his three-run double capped a five-run eighth that made it 8-1.

After busting out of his postseason

slump Wednesday, Russell hit a tworun homer for the second straight game. This one was a sixth-inning drive off losing pitcher Joe Blanton that gave the Cubs a 3-1 lead.

By winning consecutive games in Los Angeles, the Cubs took control of the best-of-seven series after getting shut out in Games 2 and 3.

Of course, there’s no need to remind longtime fans that the Cubs were in the same favorable position 13 years ago – heading home to Wrigley Field with a

3-2 lead in the NLCS. But even with ace pitchers Mark Prior and Kerry Wood starting the final two games, the Cubs collapsed against the Marlins in one of its most excruciating failures.

More than a decade later, the franchise still IS chasing its first World Series championship since 1908.

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ best pitcher was ready and eager, and he was sitting on three days of rest. Manager Dave Roberts could have deployed him Thursday night in Chavez Ravine and probably again in Clayton relief at Wrigley Field.

Kershaw Roberts declined to play his ace, instead holding his top card for the weekend. The Dodgers decided to rely on rookie Kenta Maeda and their bullpen against the NL’s best offense.

And instead of pitching to clinch a pennant Saturday night, Kershaw will attempt to save the Dodgers’ season again.

“I think you do everything you can to try and keep it just like another start at the beginning,” Kershaw said before Game 5. “Then obviously the magnitude and the situation of the game kind of raises everybody’s adrenaline and things like that, but (I’m) trying to

keep it the same right now.”

Kershaw volunteered to pitch Game 5, but Roberts had several reasons to turn him down.

Roberts figured he would need to start Maeda at some point in the next three games, and he hoped the home crowd would benefit the inconsistent Japanese right-hander. With a day off Friday, Roberts also knew he could go deep into his bullpen – which has thrown a majors-high 43 innings in the

postseason – with no repercussions.

“It’s not an elimination game,” Roberts said after Game 4. “And I think the accumulation of [Kershaw’s] usage over the last 10 days plays a factor in our decision.”

Blanton, who gave up a single to Baez leading off the sixth. Baez stole second and scored on Russell’s shot to center field that put the Cubs ahead on another unusually hot night at Dodger Stadium.

The Cubs jumped on struggling Dodgers rookie Kenta Maeda from the start. Dexter Fowler singled leading off the game and scored on Rizzo’s double to right two batters later.

Maeda gave up one run and three hits in 32/3 innings, struck out six and walked two in losing for the second time in three postseason starts. The right-hander has allowed eight earned runs in 102/3 innings with a 6.75 ERA over three appearances.

The Dodgers’ defense fell apart in the eighth when the Cubs extended their lead to 8-1.

Gonzalez tried flipping Russell’s slow roller to reliever Pedro Baez, who

came over to cover first and bobbled the ball for an error.

Pinch-hitter Willson Contreras followed with a single, and the runners moved up on pinch-hitter Albert Almora Jr.’s sacrifice bunt. Fowler reached on an infield single to first, with Gonzalez losing a foot race when Fowler slid into the bag, scoring Russell.

Kris Bryant reached on an infield single to third, with the Dodgers unsuccessfully challenging the call that he was safe.

The Dodgers thought they’d finally escaped the inning on a double play when Rizzo lined to Kike Hernandez, who forced Fowler at second. But the Cubs challenged the call and it was reversed, allowing the Cubs to prolong the inning.

Baez got yanked after walking Ben Zobrist to load the bases. Ross Stripling came on to face Baez, who doubled to

deep right, driving in three more runs.

With the Dodgers trailing 3-1, Gonzalez found himself on the wrong end of a video review for the second straight game.

With Baez playing way out on the outfield grass in shallow right field, the slow-footed Gonzalez tried to take advantage with a drag bunt leading off the seventh. Baez rushed in for a barehanded scoop and off-balance throw, but Gonzalez initially was called safe by first base umpire Ted Barrett. The Cubs challenged and the call was overturned.

In Game 4, Gonzalez was tagged out at home to end the second after sliding with his left hand stretched toward the tip of the plate while Contreras applied the tag near Gonzalez’s upper left arm. The Dodgers challenged, and the video review upheld umpire Angel Hernandez’s call.

Spartans playing for playoff spot Hubs on 2-game slide heading into regular-season finale

SYCAMORE – At 4-4 heading into its final game of the regular season, the Sycamore football team needs a win against Rochelle tonight at home to likely secure a spot in the postseason.

A loss, and the Spartans miss the playoffs for the first time since 2008.

“You can sit back and go, ‘Boy, it’s not a spot you want to be in,’ but there’s a lot of teams out there that would like to be in this position,” Sycamore coach Joe Ryan said. “I know people say this and it’s overused, but it’s like a playoff game for us.”

The Spartans will face the Hubs (5-3) in a Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover match. Rochelle started the year 5-1, but lost, 35-7, to Sterling (8-0) two weeks ago and was stunned in LaSalle-Peru

Earlier this year, the Spartans won in LaSalle-Peru, 48-20. Quarterback Ty Sulaver threw for 250 yards in the win, with three touchdown passes and one interception.

“They’re good,” Sulaver said of the Hubs. “They’re good defensively, and they’ve got a good offense. They just slipped up last week. It was a fluke.

They’re a really good team and they play really physical. I think we’ll be

fine if everyone does their job.”

The Spartans will be without running back Chris Pawola for the third week in a row. The senior, who missed most of Week 6 as well, has 512 rushing yards and eight touchdowns this year.

Peyton Wiegmann has taken over in his place, and has 245 yards.

Matt Albers and Alex Harvey have handled the offense for the Hubs. Entering the LaSalle-Peru game, Harvey had 628 yards and six scores, while Albers had 612 and eight touchdowns.

Junior quarterback Nate Mershon has thrown for only 301 yards through the first seven games, but has five touchdowns to only one interception.

“We know the stakes that are at hand,” Sycamore senior linebacker Jake Peloquin said. “We really want to go to the playoffs. We’re just taking it day by day right now and getting better each day.”

Like Sulaver, Ryan said he feels anything that plagued the Hubs against the Cavaliers last week will be corrected.

“Anything they didn’t do well,” Ryan said, “they’re going to do really well on Friday night.”

WEEK 9 PREP FOOTBALL PREVIEW CAPSULES Sterling at DeKalb

Time: 7:30 p.m. today Records: Sterling 8-0; DeKalb 7-1 Last week: The Warriors beat Ottawa, 5612; the Barbs knocked off Yorkville, 52-14.

Last meeting: The Warriors beat the Barbs, 40-26, in Week 4 of the 2011 season in Sterling. In the last meeting in DeKalb, Sterling eked out a 17-14 win in 2010.

Scouting the Warriors: Sterling hasn’t exactly had close games this year – a 35-7 win over Rochelle in Week 7 was the Warriors’ closest contest, and a 38-6 win over Sycamore in the opener was their next closest.

They’ve given up double digits only twice this year, the first coming in a 54-13 win in Week 2 at Pekin before last week’s game against the Pirates. Their average score for a game this year: 46.4-6.5.

“It’s going to be a difficult contest for us,” DeKalb coach Matt Weckler said. “Sterling is No. 2 in (Class) 5A, obviously a very good football team – scores 40 points a game, doesn’t give up a lot of points. For us going in, we just have to prepare ourselves the best we possibly can knowing we’re going against one of the best teams in the state.”

They’ve got three running backs with more than 490 yards, plus quarterback Trey Morse has 497.

“All they need is a little seam and they get to the edge, and they do some reading with their quarterback,” Weckler said. “They

spread the ball around, they have three really good running backs, they spread the ball, too.

It’s going to be a difficult matchup for us.”

What’s at stake: For the second time in three years, the Barbs are playing for a theoretical Northern Illinois Big 12 title – both Geneseo and DeKalb were perfect in the division at the end of the 2014 season going into their meeting in DeKalb, with the Maple Leafs coming out on top. This time, the Warriors come to town with a 4-0 mark in the NI Big 12 West, while the Barbs are 4-0 in East play.

The passing game remains potent for the Barbs, with Derek Kyler passing for 1,167 yards, 16 touchdowns and four interceptions.

Last week, he completed his first touchdown passes to someone other than Cole Tucker or Zuerek Day, as Delvin Williams caught two scores. Tucker has eight touchdown receptions among his 518 yards and 33 grabs, while Day has six scores, 20 catches and 296 yards.

“They’ve got it all; they’re special,” Sterling coach Jon Schlemmer said. “It’s not that we’re concentrating on just one facet, because they’re good enough to beat you in multiple ways. We’ve got our hands full, but it’s a test. I think we’re looking forward to the challenge.”

The Barbs have won five straight, including by a combined 94-14 margin the past two weeks.

Rochelle at Sycamore

Time: 7:30 p.m. today Records: Rochelle 5-3; Sycamore 4-4 Last week: LaSalle-Peru stunned the Hubs, 20-6; the Spartans kept things close against Morris on the road but lost, 28-13.

Last meeting: The teams last met when both were in the NI Big 12 East Division in 2013, with the Spartans wining, 42-33, in Rochelle. The year before, Sycamore won at Engh Field, 26-14.

Scouting the Hubs: They were ranked No. 5 in 5A before the loss to the Cavaliers (3-5) – the first win for LaSalle-Peru over a ranked team since 2009.

Things really have turned sour since the Hubs beat Geneseo, 31-0, to improve to 5-1. They followed it with a 35-7 loss to Sterling – although that is the closest game Sterling has played this year. Although it looks as though Rochelle still will get into the playoffs win or lose, a loss means it goes into the postseason on a three-game losing streak.

“He’s my best friend in coaching. He’s a tremendous coach,” Ryan said. “These games are no fun for either one of us because we want each one of us to win every week, except for this one.”

What’s at stake: In a word, everything.

At least, for the Spartans – win and they are

more than likely in the postseason after a 1-3 start for the second straight year. Lose and they miss the playoffs for the first time since 2008, when they also went 4-5. That year they also needed a Week 9 win to qualify, but lost, 13-0, to a Glenbard South team that finished 9-3.

In 2014, the Spartans also were 4-4 heading into their last week, and beat a Sterling team that was 6-2 entering the game, 21-18, at Engh Field.

Ryan said that although his team is playing a must-win game, at least it’s in control of its own destiny.

“It’s a good situation to be in,” Ryan said. “It’s not the one everyone would like to be in, because you would like to relax a little, but that’s the nature of our schedule.”

Chris Pawola will miss his third straight game for the Spartans. He has rushed for 512 yards and eight touchdowns on 83 carries, while Peyton Wiegmann is up to 245 yards and two scored on 58 carries.

Ty Sulaver has thrown for 1,073 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions while completing 49 percent of his passes – he was 8 of 30 last week against Morris. Jordan Tolzin has 24 catches, 336 yards and four touchdowns as Sulaver’s top target this year.

Last meeting: The Cogs won a BNC crossover game last year when the conference had two divisions, beating Mendota, 24-19, on the road.

Scouting the Trojans: The pass defense was nonexistent for the Trojans, as they allowed 493 passing yards and seven TD passes to North Boone quarterback Britton Morris – who also had a good game against the tough G-K pass defense, going 21 for 35 with 273 yards and three scores and only two picks. The Trojans are the only BNC team to have given up more than 300 points this year (307).

The offense had struggled for the three weeks before last Friday in facing three playoff teams, losing 40-6 to Rockford Lutheran, 28-12 to Marengo and 31-13 to Byron. They are seventh in scoring (225 points) in the 12-team conference, scoring only 22 less than G-K this year.

G-K coach Bill McCarty said the Trojans like to run the ball and are better than their record indicates.

“They could easily have five or six wins,” McCarty said. “They’ve played a lot of close games, and they have a very high talent level.

They could easily be in the playoffs or fighting for a playoff spot.”

What’s at stake: The last time the Cogs finished the year undefeated, they went on to a Class 1A state championship. That was in 1977. They have their sixth playoff berth in 10 years locked up – this after going from 1994 to 2006 without a postseason berth.

“We don’t really talk about it,” McCarty said. “It would be nice, but we just prepare each week and take it one at a time. It’s what we’ve done all year. When it’s over, then you can think about it.”

The Cogs have been outstanding on the ground this year behind Aidan Simmons (120807-11) and Dan Guardi (82-626-6), and Zach Butler has been efficient in the passing game.

He’s only attempted 73 passes, but has completed 56 percent of them for 780 yards and eight touchdowns. He has not thrown an interception this year.

Tucker remains the top receiver in the area with 518 yards and eight touchdowns on 33 catches, but has been double teamed consistently. Zuerek Day has emerged as a weapon out of the slot, with 296 yards and six touchdowns on 20 catches.

Sterling coach Jon Schlemmer said this game will help his Warriors going forward into the postseason.

“What they can do on the perimeter, everybody they have up front, and some of their special athlete 1-on-1s,” he said.

“It’s getting us to where we have to be as far as preparation mentally and physically, because we know that we’ve earned a Week 10, and so have they, but at the same time, I’m sure they’re approaching the game the same way we are.”

Nyrell Sullivan (70 carries, 700 yards, 13 TDs) leads the Warriors on the ground, followed by Latrell Vaughn (59-604-10), quarterback Trey Morse (62-497-4) and Andrew Spaulding (90-493-7).

“They have three solid running backs that can easily run for 100 yards in any game,” DeKalb defensive lineman Dwayne Lacey said. “We have to come together as a team and know what we have to do as a run defense.”

“They have gotten really big on the offensive and defensive lines,” Hiawatha coach Jason Keneway said. “They’re just plain old big. I think we are faster, so we have to use our speed, but our size also matches up well. They pass the ball a lot in any given situation. Our secondary will have a big test this week, and it’s good because you’ll probably see a lot of that in the playoffs. We’re hoping to get that pass rush going on defense and slow them down a bit.”

What’s at stake: On paper, it looks as though Hiawatha should pick up the win to improve to 7-2, heading into the playoffs on a four-game winning streak.

Ottawa at Kaneland

Time: 7 p.m. today Records: Ottawa 1-7, Kaneland 3-5 Last week: The Pirates lost their sixth straight, 56-12, to Sterling. ... Kaneland had its playoff chances end with a 31-28 loss at Geneseo.

Last meeting: For the second week in a row, the Knights are playing a team they haven’t faced as NI Big 12 foes.

Scouting the Pirates: It’s been a slog for the Pirates this year. Last week was only the third time they have not been shut out, although one of their two touchdowns came in garbage time.

Sam Holtzman is 62 of 119 this year for 726 yards, three touchdowns and five interceptions. Two of the scores have gone to Eric Fox, who has 27 catches and 381 yards.

What’s at stake: Both teams are out of playoff contention, with the Knights set to miss the playoffs for the second time in three years. They made the playoffs all but one year between 1995 and 2013.

Jack Douglas has continued his breakout season at quarterback. The junior has thrown for 1,354 yards, 12 touchdowns and five interceptions while completing 55 percent of his passes. Josh Marczuk (36-491-3) and Matt Noel (27-461-4) have been his favorite targets.

DeKALB – The Sterling offense amasses almost 325 rushing yards a game – and the Warriors can get it from four different players.

Their offensive prowess is matched by their defense, which has two shutouts this year and is giving up less than seven points a game.

The Warriors, ranked No. 2 in this week’s Associated Press’ Class 5A poll, take their perfect record into DeKalb, No. 6 in 6A, tonight in a Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover battle in the regular-season finale between the conference’s two undefeated division champions.

“This is a good game right before the playoffs because it’s like an unofficial playoff game,” DeKalb receiver Cole

Tucker said. “I’m preparing for it like it’s a playoff game. The team is probably better than what we’re going to see in the first round, maybe. It’s just a good tuneup.”

With Sterling’s ability to put up points, DeKalb coach Matt Weckler said the Barbs (7-1) will do something teams usually do against them – play a ball-control offense.

“It’s going to be a little different for us,” Weckler said. “Usually we’re the team that scores a lot and pretty quick, and that’s what they’re all about. Our offense, we’re going to have to hold on to the ball, because if they get the ball, they’re a fast team and can score at any time.”

That might mean more action for running backs Jelante Young and Delvin Williams. Williams has taken more carries from Young recently, but Young still has 495 yards and six scores on 79 carries compared with 61 carries, 361 yards and five scores for Williams.

Last week, quarterback Derek Kyler emerged as the team’s leading rusher with 508 yards and seven touchdowns on 77 carries. He has thrown for 1,167 yards, 16 touchdowns and only four interceptions.

On first blush, there was no reason to assume the Bears could go into Lambeau Field and upset the Green Bay Packers.

Granted, the Packers had struggled a bit at 3-2, but the Bears traveled north knowing Jay Cutler, Jeremy Langford, Kevin White, BEARS INSIDER Eddie Royal and Josh SitHub ton all would Arkush be unavailable on offense, and it was hard to imagine them swapping points with Green Bay. That prospect in particular became even more dubious when quarterback Brian Hoyer and guard Kyle Long were lost in the first half.

No offense to Matt Barkley, but with the supporting cast available, the Bears might have had just as good a chance of competing with Gnarls Barkley at quarterback.

So, in spite of the Bears’ 26-10 loss to the Packers on Thursday night, I prefer to write with my glass half full.

Yes, we can wonder why receiver Alshon Jeffery disappeared after his emotional outburst in the locker room after last week’s disappointment against the Jaguars, playing this week against a Packers team that was without its top three cornerbacks – Sam Shields, Demarious Randle and Quentin Rollins.

But seemingly aware they weren’t going to be getting much help, the Bears’ defense came to play, at least for the better part of three quarters, and it feels like that’s worth noting.

Remember, competing would be nice, but rebuilding is what this club is supposed to be doing right now, and there have been some signs of progress on defense.

The Bears still were without lineman Eddie Goldman, who is one of the most important players on that side of the ball, and of course cornerback Kyle Fuller still is down, but linebacker Pernell McPhee made his 2016 debut, and the rest of the defense had its moments.

Most notably, linebacker Leonard Floyd returned to the lineup after missing a couple of games and showed some flashes of why the Bears traded up in the first round to draft him at No. 9.

Floyd wasn’t spectacular, but he made two big plays with great effort even though they were both very much the product of being in the right place at the right time, first sacking Aaron Rodgers at his own 39 after being left unblocked but reading the misdirection play with 1:22 left in the

first half.

Then Floyd sacked Rodgers again at his own 10 on the third play of the second half, stripped the ball out and recovered it in the end zone to give the Bears a 10-6 lead.

Floyd clearly is a developmental project who is a long way from where he needs to go to be the player the Bears envisioned when they drafted him, but we shouldn’t underestimate how much this performance can do to jumpstart the process.

I also was struck by how well the Bears’ secondary played through the first 21/2 quarters.

Yes, the Packers’ offense has been stuttering, and in Ty Montgomery, they had a receiver playing running back all night with Eddie Lacy on injured reserve and James Starks out indefinitely with a knee issue.

Perhaps that helped the Bears lay back and play pass defense, but the Bears’ secondary was surprisingly good well into the third quarter.

Time and again, the Packers ran three and even four receivers on routes, and the Bears’ DBs blanketed them, forcing Rodgers to check down or throw the ball away.

Particularly impressive was CB Cre’Von LeBlanc, who appears to be capable of playing tight man coverage and isn’t shy about sticking his head in and coming up to make a hit.

The Kaneland volleyball team broke a school record and earned a conference title after sweeping Yorkville on Thursday in Maple Park.

The Knights improved to 30-4 overall, giving them the most wins in a season and a Northern Illinois Big 12 East championship.

They beat the Foxes, 25-19, 27-25, and will be the top seed in the Class 3A Burlington Cental Regional. They will play Tuesday against the winner of No. 7-seed Marengo and No. 11 Harvard, who play Monday.

Barbs win on senior night: After losing the first set, DeKalb held on to beat Morris in three to win its regular-season finale.

The Barbs will be the No. 5 seed in the Class 4A Elgin Larkin Regional and will play Tuesday against the winner of No. 12 Elgin and No. 21 Rockford Auburn, who play Monday.

G-K falls to Oregon: Genoa-Kingston ended the regular season with a threeset loss at Oregon.

They forced a third set, but eventually lost, 25-19, 23-25, 26-24, after leading 24-23 in the final set.

Guidelines offered for PSA testing Note to readers: This column originally ran in October 2014.

Dear Dr. K: I’ve heard so many conflict-

ing opinions about whether or not to get screened for prostate cancer. Are there official guidelines? What do they recommend?

Dear Reader: To say prostate cancer screening has been controversial is an understatement. I spoke to my colleague Dr. Marc Garnick, clinical professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, to hear his thoughts.

The two ways to screen for prostate cancer are the digital rectal exam (DRE) and the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test. PSA levels rise when the prostate has turned cancerous, but they also rise when the prostate is just irritated or damaged. Together, PSA testing and DRE may nearly double the detection rate for early-stage prostate cancer.

But there’s a catch. Because other prostate conditions besides cancer can raise the blood levels of PSA, an elevated PSA does not always mean a man has cancer.

We call a high blood level of PSA in a man without prostate cancer a “false positive” result.

False positive results can cause needless worry. And they may lead to invasive procedures, such as biopsies, to determine if cancer is present. No test is perfect: There always is the chance of a false positive result. But it happens pretty often with the PSA test.

The bigger problem, however, is this: As strange as this may sound, not all cancers are bad for your health. Some prostate cancers are so small and slow-growing they will never spread and cause problems: You’ll die of something else. You’ll die with prostate cancer, but not from

Of course, some prostate cancers are aggressive and very definitely a threat to a man’s health. So what we really want to have is a screening test that detects these aggressive prostate cancers.

Unfortunately, the PSA test cannot distinguish well between aggressive and slow-growing tumors. The former may require immediate treatment, while the latter may need no active treatment at all.

A final weakness of the PSA test is it does not detect all cancers. In other words, just as the test can be falsely positive, it also can be falsely negative: It comes back normal (“negative”), but you really do have prostate cancer. In such cases, a PSA test offers a false sense of security.

In 2013, the American Urological Association came out with new guidelines that are more or less in line with those of other groups. These guidelines advise against routine screening for men at average risk who are younger than age 55 or older than age 70. For men aged 55 to 69, the guidelines advise the doctor and patient make the decision together, based on a man’s individual risks, preferences and values.

I order PSA tests in many men aged 55 to 70. But like many doctors, what I’m waiting for is a better test that detects aggressive prostate cancers accurately and ignores the slow-growing ones.

Some suggested friends may not invite the woman because they don’t want her to feel like a “third wheel,” but advised “Lonely” to speak up and tell them, indeed, she would like to be included. Others thought people assume a widow is emotionally needy, so they don’t want to be involved with her.

We both work hard and, while we might struggle, we never ask for financial assistance.

Much as we might wish to, we cannot dictate the behavior of others.
