How can we teach about local abolitionists POLL On Saturday, three sites of significance in the Underground Railroad were marked with plaques around DeKalb County.

A handful of the county’s residents turned out to commemorate the unveilings, but I wish we had involved schoolchildren and their teachers.

I have written columns before about the lack of local history offered in our schools and how very little is taught about Illinois’ past. In 2018, our state will celebrate its bicentennial. But will there be any curriculum plans made available to teachers to help mark the milestone?

The speakers at the dedications shared the story of the Underground Railroad in this county, reminding us that our forefathers were willing to risk arrest and condemnation for harboring runaway slaves seeking freedom in Canada. There were laws against helping slaves who escaped bondage in the South, and bounty hunters joined law enforcement in chasing and capturing the fleeing people and arresting those who were helping them along the way. Many churchgoing men and women saw the injustice and defied the law.

At the former Deacon David West farm on Old State Road, Nancy Beasley who wrote the book “The Underground Railroad in DeKalb County, Illinois” and Harlen Persinger, greatgreat-grandson of Deacon West, enlightened us about the abolitionist West and his daring moves to hide and transport people.

West’s corn crib had a hiding place beneath the floor and one or more of his wagons were built with a false bottom so up to seven people could lie prone under the raised floor while he piled hay or straw into the wagon before taking them to the next stop in St. Charles.

VIEWS Barry Schrader These trips were made under cover of night, and never during a full moon. What must have been going through the minds of those runaways as they were packed into such cramped quarters, entrusting their lives to farmers and others willing to shuttle them from place to place?

They told about the 80th birthday celebration for West, held in 1886 on the very ground where the marker was placed, when fellow abolitionists and congregants gathered to pay him tribute. It makes us think back 130 years about the sacrifices and courage of both escaping slaves and the DeKalb County residents who helped them.

Why can’t more local history be taught in our schools, even if we have to form a speakers’ bureau with volunteers aided by Powerpoint presentations, going from school to school wherever invited?

Also, wouldn’t it be an exiting history lesson to build a replica wagon such as West used, letting the kids slide into that claustrophobic, hidden chamber and have straw spread over them. They wouldn’t forget that lesson for a long time.

Maybe someone should contact Cliff Golden to see if he has a Boy Scout who would build this as an Eagle project.

LOCAL BRIEF NIU’s homecoming parade route set with road closures

DeKALB – Northern Illinois University’s annual homecoming parade will start at 7 p.m. today at Gilbert Drive and College Avenue and last about an hour. The parade will end at North Third Street and East Locust Street, according to a news release from the DeKalb Police Department.

Streets will be closed along the parade route, which winds through downtown DeKalb: • East on College Avenue (at Gilbert Drive) • South on John Street to West Locust Street • East on West Locust Street to First Street • South on First Street to Lincoln Highway • East on Lincoln Highway to North Third Street • North on North Third Street to East Locust

Trump refuses to say whether he will accept results of Nov. 8 election

LAS VEGAS – Threatening to upend a fundamental pillar of American democracy, Donald Trump refused to say Wednesday night that he will accept the results of next month’s election if he loses to Hillary Clinton. The Democratic nominee declared Trump’s resistance “horrifying.”

Trump had spent the days leading up to the third and final presidential debate warning voters that the election would be “rigged.” Asked whether he would accept the outcome if Clinton emerges victorious, he said, “I will tell you at the time. I’ll keep you in suspense.”

The Republican National Committee immediately disavowed Trump’s statement. There is no evidence of widespread voter fraud, and election officials across the country have denied and denounced Trump’s charges.

Trump’s assertions raise the prospect that millions of his supporters may not accept the results on Nov. 8 if he loses, thrusting the nation into uncharted territory.

Wednesday’s contest quickly shifted from a calm, policy-focused faceoff into a bitter and deeply personal confrontation. Trump called Clinton a “nasty woman,” while the Democrat panned him as “unfit” to be commander in chief.

Clinton, who began the debate with a lead in nearly all battleground states, forcefully accused Trump of favoring Russia’s leader over American military and intelligence experts after the Republican nominee pointedly refused to

accept the U.S. government’s assertion that Moscow has sought to meddle in the U.S. election.

She charged that Russian President Vladimir Putin was backing Trump because “he’d rather have a puppet as president of the United States.”

Trump denied any relationship with Putin and said he would condemn any foreign interference in the election. But he notably declined to back the intelligence community’s assessment that Russia was involved in the hacking of Democratic organizations. The Clinton campaign has said the FBI also is investigating Russia’s involvement in the hacking of a top adviser’s emails.

The 90-minute contest in Las Vegas came about three weeks before Election Day and with early voting underway in more than 30 states. Trump has struggled to expand his support beyond his most loyal backers and must reshape the race in its closing days if he hopes to defeat Clinton.

The candidates repeatedly clashed over their drastically different visions for the nation’s future. Trump backed Supreme Court justices who would overturn the landmark Roe vs. Wade ruling, while Clinton vowed to appoint justices that would uphold the decision legalizing abortion, saying, “We have come too far to have that turned back now.”

The businessman entered the final debate facing a string of sexual assault accusations from women who came forward after he denied in the previous contest that he had kissed or groped women without their consent. That Trump denial followed the release of a video of in

Trump denied the accusations anew Wednesday night, saying the women coming forward “either want fame or her campaign did it.” He falsely said the women’s allegations had been debunked.

Clinton said Trump “thinks belittling women makes him bigger. He goes after their dignity, their self-worth.” She avoided answering a question about her husband’s infidelities.

Trump pressed Clinton on immigration, accusing her of wanting an “open borders” policy, a characterization she vigorously disputes. The Republican, who has called for building a wall the

length of the U.S.-Mexico border, blamed some “bad hombres here” for drug epidemics around the country, and promised “we’re going to get ‘em out.”

Clashing on trade, Trump said Clinton had misrepresented her position on the Trans-Pacific Partnership, noting that she originally had called it the “gold standard” of trade agreements. Clinton shot back that once the deal was finished, it didn’t meet her standards.

“I’m against it now. I’ll be against after the election. I’ll be against it when I’m president,” she said.

Both were asked if they would consider tax increases or benefit cuts to support Social Security and Medicare programs. Trump said he would cut taxes and repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, but he did not detail any plans for Social Security or other entitlement programs. Clinton said she would put more money in the Social Security trust fund through increasing taxes on the wealthy and other methods and promised not to cut benefits. She also argued that the Affordable Care Act has extended the solvency of Medicare and said she would work to bring costs down.

On foreign policy, Clinton reasserted her opposition to sending a large-scale U.S. troop presence to the Middle East to defeat the Islamic State. She’s backed a no-fly zone in Syria, which would mark an expansion of current U.S. strategy.

For Trump, the debate was one of his final chances to shift the trajectory of a race that appears to be slipping away.

Clinton’s campaign is expanding into traditionally Republican states, while Trump’s electoral path is shrinking.

Movie screening stirs discussion about sexual assault

DeKALB – An average of 20 to 30 sexual assault cases involving teenagers are reported in DeKalb each year, but the number of assaults likely is higher because of barriers victims face in reporting, DeKalb police Cmdr. Bob Redel said.

Redel was one of eight panelists to speak Tuesday after the screening of the documentary “Audrie & Daisy” hosted by Safe Passage and the DeKalb County Regional Office of Education.

The film, which is available on Netflix, explores cases of two teenage girls in separate cities who were sexually assaulted by peers in 2012. Photos and videos of the assaults were shared online, leading to further bullying from classmates.

Audrie Pott, a 15-year-old from Saratoga, California, was sexually assaulted at a party and hanged herself eight days later after photographs of the attack were posted online.

Daisy Coleman, from Maryville, Missouri, was 14 when her sexual assault was recorded on another teenager’s phone. The documentary chronicles several suicide attempts as Daisy faces harassment from community members and others on social media when charges in her case are dropped.

Safe Passage advocate Marj Askins said survivors must overcome fears of not being believed and being retaliated against when they decide to share their stories.

“If someone is already blaming themselves, it makes it that much harder for them to talk to somebody else about it for fear that that person is already going to blame them,” Askins said.

Audrie’s online interactions made it clear that she blamed herself, while Daisy was immediately ostracized at school after reporting the assault, Askins said.

became a place where [Daisy] didn’t feel safe at all, because everybody knew what had happened, and they were all making assumptions about her,” Askins said.

Tom Sodaro, principal of Sandwich High School, said many students no longer can ignore bullying, as they go home and have to deal with the “battleground” of social media.

“I’ve been doing this for 25 years, and it’s unbelievable the changes that’ve come from my first year to now,” he said. “There is no safe zone.”

Kristen Myers, director of the Center for the Study of Women, Gender and Sexuality at Northern Illinois University, said students usually go to a friend for support after an assault, but that person cannot offer the same help a counselor or advocacy group such as Safe Passage can.

“We have noticed that they do less well in school if they don’t get help,” Myers said. “They connect less well with their school; they don’t want to

stay at their school, and they have lots of adverse health problems.”

DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack said sexual assault cases can be difficult to prosecute because there often is a delay in reporting and police can have difficulty obtaining enough evidence for a conviction.

“It’s not a situation in which the police will find out at 4 in the afternoon there’s been a sexual assault and they’ll be able to interview a survivor and then have an interview with the perpetrator or even know the identity of the perpetrator right away,” Schmack said.

Amanda Christensen, regional superintendent of DeKalb County schools, said she wonders how many of her students went without disclosing their assaults after seeing how Daisy changed in appearance and behavior throughout her ordeal.

“We cannot pretend that teen sexual assault doesn’t happen,” she said. “I think that for our young men

and women, it has to be made very clear that passed-out sex is not consensual; drunk sex is not consensual.

Having sex because you feel you’re obligated to have it is also not consensual.”

CARL W. ANDERSON, JR.

Born: November 13, 1927; in Aurora, IL Died: October 17, 2016; in Rochelle, IL Carl W. Anderson, Jr., 88, passed away Monday, October 17, 2016 at his home in Rochelle.

Carl was born November 13, 1927 to Carl W., Sr. and Julia (Nielson) Anderson in Aurora, IL. He was a US Army Veteran and served from 1946-48. He married Mary Diane Concidine on February 20, 1954 in DeKalb, IL. Carl worked for many years for Swift & Co. and then for the City of Rochelle. He had a special knack for gardening; always having beautiful flowers and loved sharing vegetables with neighbors and friends. The highlight of his life was his four granddaughters. Carl always had time for potbelly pigs, hatching ducks, carving pumpkins and swinging.

He is preceded in death by his son, Carl “Bill” Anderson III, on January 20, 2016; and two sisters, Esther (Ken) Detwiller and Alice (Larry) Teeling.

Carl is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter, Kathy (Steve) Sawlsville of Wyomissing, PA; sister, Wilda (George) Bertochinni of Hampshire, IL; four granddaughters, Kimberly (Mike) Zeiders, Kristine (Joseph Teahl) Sawlsville, Amanda Sawlsville and Lisa Anderson; and great granddaughter, Greta Zeiders.

The visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:15 P.M., Friday, October 21, 2016 at the Unger-Horner Funeral Home, 400 N. 6th St., Rochelle. The funeral service will follow at 6:30 P.M., Friday with Chaplain Judy Williams officiating.

Cremation rites will follow the service.

Born April 25, 1936, in DeKalb, the son of George and Alice (Redmond) Cadie.

Gerald married June Carol Beck on August 24, 1957 in Cortland, Illinois.

Gerald was a graduate of DeKalb High School Class of 1954 and was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was employed

by Sycamore Hospital as assistant manager, Northern FS for 20 years, and the State of Illinois Department of Unemployment retiring in 1999. Gerald enjoyed his 1968 Corvette, winters in Texas, traveling, and the beach.

He is survived by his wife, June; son, David (Debbie) Cadie of Oregon; daughter,

To the Electors of the State of Illinois: The Illinois Constitution establishes a structure for government and laws. There are three ways to initiate change to the Illinois Constitution: (1) a constitutional convention may propose changes to any part; (2) the General Assembly may propose changes to any part; or (3) a petition initiative may propose amendments limited to structural and procedural subjects contained in the Legislative Article. The people of Illinois must approve any changes to the Constitution before they become effective. The purpose of this document is to inform you of proposed changes to the Illinois Constitution and provide you with a brief explanation and a summary of the arguments in favor of and in opposition to the proposed amendment.

Proposed changes in the existing constitutional amendment are indicated by underscoring all new matter and by crossing with a line all matter which is to be deleted.

PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO ADD SECTION 11 TO ARTICLE IX OF THE ILLINOIS CONSTITUTION ARTICLE IX – REVENUE SECTION 11. TRANSPORTATION FUNDS (a) No moneys, including bond proceeds, derived from taxes, fees, excises, or license taxes relating to registration, title, or operation or use of vehicles, or related to the use of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, airports, or to fuels used for propelling vehicles, or derived from taxes, fees, excises, or license taxes relating to any other transportation infrastructure or transportation operation, shall be expended for purposes other than as provided in subsections (b) and (c). (b) Transportation funds may be expended for the following: the costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation, including statutory refunds and adjustments provided in those laws; payment of highway obligations; costs for construction, reconstruction, maintenance, repair, and betterment of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, airports, or other forms of transportation; and other statutory highway purposes. Transportation funds may also be expended for the State or local share of highway funds to match federal aid highway funds, and expenses of grade separation of highways and railroad crossings, including protection of at-grade highways and railroad crossings, and, with respect to local governments, other transportation purposes as authorized by law. (c) The costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation shall be limited to direct program expenses related to the following: the enforcement of traffic, railroad, and motor carrier laws; the safety of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, or airports; and the construction, reconstruction, improvement, repair, maintenance, operation, and administration of highways, under any related provisions of law or any purpose related or incident to, including grade separation of highways and railroad crossings. The limitations to the costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation under this subsection (c) shall also include direct program expenses related to workers’ compensation claims for death or injury of employees of the State’s transportation agency; the acquisition of land and the erection of buildings for highway purposes, including the acquisition of highway rights-of-way or for investigations to determine the reasonable anticipated future highway needs; and the making of surveys, plans, specifications, and estimates for the construction and maintenance of flight strips and highways. The expenses related to the construction and maintenance of flight strips and highways under this subsection (c) are for the purpose of providing access to military and naval reservations, defense-industries, defense-industry sites, and sources of raw materials, including the replacement of existing highways and highway connections shut off from general use at military and naval reservations, defense-industries, and defense-industry sites, or the purchase of rights-of-way. (d) None of the revenues described in subsection (a) of this Section shall, by transfer, offset, or otherwise, be diverted to any purpose other than those described in subsections (b) and (c) of this Section. (e) If the General Assembly appropriates funds for a mode of transportation not described in this Section, the General Assembly must provide for a dedicated source of funding. (f) Federal funds may be spent for any purposes authorized by federal law.

EXPLANATION The proposed amendment adds a new Section to the Revenue Article of the Illinois Constitution that provides revenue generated from transportation related taxes and fees (referred to as “transportation funds”) shall be used exclusively for transportation related purposes. Transportation related taxes and fees include motor fuel taxes, vehicle registration fees, and other taxes and user fees dedicated to public highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit (buses and rail), ports, or airports.

Under the proposed amendment, transportation funds may be used by the State or local governments only for the following purposes: (1) costs related to administering transportation and vehicle laws, including public safety purposes and the payment of obligations such as bonds; (2) the State or local share necessary to secure federal funds or for local government transportation purposes as authorized by law; (3) the construction, reconstruction, improvement, repair, maintenance, and operation of highways, mass transit, and railroad crossings; (4) expenses related to workers’ compensation claims for death or injury of transportation agency employees; and (5) to purchase land for building highways or buildings for to be used for highway purposes.

This new Section is a limitation on the power of the General Assembly or a unit of local government to use, divert, or transfer transportation funds for a purpose other than transportation. It does not, and is not intended to, impact or change the way in which the State and local governments use sales taxes, including the sales and excise tax on motor fuel, or alter home rule powers granted under this Constitution. It does not seek to change the way in which the State funds programs administered by the Illinois Secretary of State, Illinois Department of Transportation, and operations by the Illinois State Police directly dedicated to the safety of roads, or entities or programs funded by units of local government. Further, the Section does not impact the expenditure of federal funds, which may be spent for any purpose authorized by federal law.

FORM OF BALLOT Proposed Amendment to the 1970 Illinois Constitution Explanation of Amendment The proposed amendment adds a new section to the Revenue Article of the Illinois Constitution. Hickman praised the work of the Lions Club and the police.

“In a community like ours, those partnerships are essential,” he said.

The staff will be trained Friday as part of a professional learning program. The training will include gunshots, Hickman said.

The district will begin planning to involve students in future drills, but it was important to train the staff first, he said.

The release included this overview: • Alert: Sound an alarm of the situation at hand and call the police. Information of the situation should be provided by all means possible including the public address system. (example; intruder in hallway C).

• Lockdown: Doors should be locked to provide a time barrier and give students and teachers time to recognize the threat. If they are not in the danger zone, they should evacuate immediately.

• Inform: If possible keep teachers, students and police up to date on the intruders location inside the school.

• Counter: Interrupt the physical act of the shooting. If the intruder walks into a classroom or hall and you have no escape route, use all means necessary to protect yourself and others. If the intruder can be overpowered by multiple people; swarm the intruder and detain.

• Evacuate: We want as many people away from the scene as possible. During the alert state or any other stage, the first option should be to evacuate.

KIRKLAND – Hiawatha School District 426 plans to implement new emergency procedures for scenarios involving school intruders or shooters with a training program Friday.

District 426 will be utilizing a new strategy for lockdown procedures that is known as the Alert, Lockdown, Counter, Evacuate plan.

It will replace the standard procedure of locking the door, moving students to a part of the room where they cannot be seen and quietly remain until an “all clear” announcement is provided, according to a news release from the district.

“This strategy relies on the use of technology and information in a way that staff and students can make in-

formed decisions in a crisis,” Superintendent Chip Hickman said in a news release. “The main idea is to move as many people as possible from the danger zone and provide realistic training, so that those involved in the crisis have a better chance of surviving.”

While the subject can be difficult to talk about, Hickman said safety is the top priority for the district.

He said that the ALICE approach is “dramatically different” from the district’s existing protocol.

“The reality is that we need to have a contingency plan,” he said.

The district serves 580 students in two schools. The program originally was evaluated in the 2015-16 school year and will be provided training by a certified ALICE instructor from the Kirkland Police Department. The Lions Club of Kirkland bought supplies,

Linda Wahlstrom, retired certified school nurse, has lived in DeKalb since 1975. Her nursing career has included working as a staff nurse at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, an office nurse, Northern Illinois University Health Services and most recently, from 1995 to 2010 as a school nurse at DeKalb High School. She earned a diploma from Chicago Wesley Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and a Bachelor of Nursing degree from NIU. She was a member of the Illinois Association of School Nurses, where in the Northeast Division she held the positions of nominating committee, membership chair, vice president and president. She also presented a poster at the state conference.

Linda currently is a member of DeKalb Women’s Club, DeKalb Drama Club, Ellwood House Association, Lifelong Learning Institute at NIU, Freeport High School class reunion committee, Kishwaukee Health Auxiliary, and is a volunteer at Kishwaukee Hospital. She is actively involved at Hillcrest Covenant church. Previously, she was a member of the University of Illinois Extension Service, DeKalb County. When her daughters were young, Linda initiated, organized and directed a group of local mothers to exchange child care hours.

Linda enjoys music of all genres, attending theater productions, travel, reading, cooking, baking and knitting. She is a mother of three daughters, grandmother of four and currently lives in DeKalb with her husband, Jerry.

Cherry Smash was produced in Rosslyn until 1935. Your dispenser was made before that. Value about $2,000 to $3,000. *** Q: What can you tell me about Splashme dolls? I’ve seen these little seated figures online and would like to know who made them and how old they are.

A: Splashme dolls were designed in 1917 by Genevieve Pfeffer (1890-1985), who used “Gene George” as her business name. The doll’s shape, with head in hands and elbows on knees, is based on Rose O’Neill’s Kewpie doll “The Thinker.” Splashme dolls also have similar large, sideglancing eyes. The dolls were made of bisque, composition or plaster of paris, had painted features and wore painted bathing suits and bathing shoes. They were first sold at beaches and vacation spots. Splashme dolls with a mohair wig or a scarf tied around painted hair were first made in 1918. Pfeffer also wrote books about the Splashme dolls. Splashme doll baby talcum containers, soap, party favors, postcards, and other items were made. They opened an antiques store in New York City and he also made perfume for friends. He started the Prince Matchabelli Perfume Co. in 1926. Norina designed the crown-shape bottle. The first bottles were porcelain, later glass, made in Germany. Georges died in 1935 and the company was sold several times. It became part of Parfums de Coeur in 1993.

An auction catalog offered a “rare Kakiemon enameled porcelain plate” from the 18th century, but there was no further explanation of the age, history or design. What is the meaning of Kakiemon? Sakaida Kakiemon (1596-1666) was a potter who worked in Japan in the early 17th century. He and his family painted porcelain made in the town of Arita.

Kakiemon wares were painted over the glaze using blue, red, green, yellow and black, and sometimes with gilding. The best work was done from 1680 to 1720. The ceramic was milky white with a smooth surface. Designs were asymmetrical and sparse, so there was a lot of white space as part of the design. Most patterns were based on flower arrangements, crooked tree branches, flowers like peonies or chrysanthemums, or flowering fruit trees.

One famous pattern included quail. The Kakiemon style was so popular it was copied by many English and German factories, and 19th-century copies are very similar to early designs. A collector today may identify a plate as Kakiemon if it is in the style of the early pieces. But the description used by a museum also includes the name of the European maker. Meissen (German), Chantilly and Mennecy (French), and Chelsea, Bow and Worcester (English) all made early collectible copies. Collectors pay high prices for the 18th- and early 19th-century pieces. A nine-inch Meissen plate made about 1740 with a tiger, bamboo and flower decoration sold at a Brunk auction for $6,500. The pattern is copied today on modern dishes. Collectors should not be confused.

RIP? Not if you’re a Cubs fan in a playoff year

The Associated Press CHICAGO – If you want to know just how important the Cubs are to Chicago, a good place to start is at the end.

In a city where fans have been known to scatter ashes of the dearly departed at Wrigley Field, families of those who could no longer wait till next season are planting Cubs pennants and flags at the graves of loved ones or sending them off to the great beyond with Cubs hats and jerseys in their caskets.

Resting easy has never been easy for Cubs fans, after all.

Take the family of the late Norman and Florence Sanders. Relatives are making sure they still can do what they did their entire lives: Root for the Cubs.

“One of my daughters went and bought a W flag and about a week ago went to the cemetery and put it there with them,” said Terry Ann Arriaga, whose father died the year the Cubs came within five outs of reaching the World Series back in 2003 and whose mother passed during spring training this year.

since 1908, Chicago is awash in Cubbie blue and red. Children head to school decked out in Cubs gear, and many grown-ups are doing the same at work. “Fly the W” flags are waving from car antennas, porches and museums, while bakeries are topping doughnuts and cookies with the Cubs logo. Death notices with the names of spouses, children and grandchildren now sometimes have a few words about the deceased’s devotion to the lovable losers.

“In lieu of flowers, go to a Cubs game and raise your glass in memory of Mary,” wrote the family of Mary E. Fickenscher after she died in June.

James Apostolopoulos’ family not only wanted to people to know that he’d fought in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II but also cheered for the Cubs. Kenneth Mueller’s family honored his wishes by burying him in a Cubs T-shirt, and his death notice last month asked those attending the wake to try to “wear Cubs’ attire.”

And when Jane Anne Del Carlo Barredo died, the only thing written of a life that began in Illinois in 1930 and ended in May in California was this: “Jane loved Jesus and the Cubs.”

Such a connection might help

explain a suspicion among Cubs Nation that the recently departed are somehow watching the playoffs – and maybe doing more.

“We just feel like the only way we can get through this emotionally is by saying he is here with us spiritually, enjoying this so much,” Thompson said.

Chicago Park District officials said Tuesday they decided to take 459 of their 2,435 water fixtures out of service based on samples collected during the summer.

The Chicago Tribune reported that consultants found a wide range of lead levels in Chicago parks and Park District facilities, similar to earlier reports from Chicago Public Schools, suburban school districts and schools operated by the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Potential sources include lead pipes and solder or lead in fixtures. Park District officials said they took action when the amount of lead at a particular fountain or sink exceeded the federal Environmental Protection Agency’s action level of 15

The Daily Herald reported that state transportation officials are taking that precaution while they wait for new plows and trucks.

Modest gain seen for Obama’s last health care sign-up season

WASHINGTON – Facing new challenges to a legacy law, the Obama administration on Wednesday set modest expectations for the president’s final health care sign-up season. The biggest worry: rising premiums and dwindling choices.

Some 13.8 million people are expected to sign up for 2017 coverage, Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell said. That would be an increase of a bit less than 9 percent from the 12.7 million who picked plans during open enrollment for this year.

This year is shaping up to be the most difficult sign-up season since HealthCare.gov launched in 2013 and the computer system froze up. But technology isn’t the issue this time. Premiums are going up by double digits in many communities, and some major insurers have left the program, leaving consumers with fewer choices next year.

The administration said taxpayer-provided subsidies designed to rise alongside premiums will cushion most of the pocketbook impact. About 85 percent of customers get financial help. And for those policyholders whose insurer bailed out, the government is automatically matching them to another carrier’s plan. It’s up to the consumer whether to accept the match or keep shopping.

Officials said returning customers will notice a smoother, more informative website, making it easier to compare plans. Those who are satisfied with their current plans don’t need to do anything; they’ll be automatically renewed.

Finally, the administration is ramping up outreach, with a particular goal of enticing younger, healthier people to enroll. Expect pitches on social media platforms, email and TV and radio as well as direct mail.

And the IRS will play a supporting role with a not-too-subtle nudge. Later this fall, the tax agency will send letters to people who did not get the minimum coverage required by the health care law. They’ll be reminded that going without insurance risks a fine from the IRS, and the basic penalty is now $695.

Some independent analysts said even a 9 percent sign-up increase will be a heavy lift.

Burwell asserted that the health care law’s insurance markets are strong and offer a product that people want and need. But she also acknowledged “that doesn’t mean the road has been perfectly smooth,” and the markets face “a transition period.”

Burwell criticized Republicans for their unyielding opposition, saying “at nearly every turn, we’ve had to overcome partisan attempts to repeal and undermine the law through legislation and litigation.” She called on Congress to cooperate on proposed fixes, such as a government-sponsored “public op-

Going into its fourth sign-up season, President Barack Obama’s health care law has yet to achieve stability. Enrollment has been lower than initially projected; insurers say patients turned out to be sicker than expected, and a complex internal system to help stabilize premiums did not work as intended, partly because of actions by congressional Republicans.

The law makes carrying health insurance a legal obligation for most people, and prohibits insurers for turning away the sick. It offers subsidized private plans to people who don’t have coverage through their jobs, along with a state option to expand Medicaid for low-income people. Largely as a result, the nation’s uninsured rate has dropped below 9 percent, a historically low level. More than 21 million people have gained coverage since the law passed in 2010.

The 13.8 million enrollment goal announced Wednesday actually represents an annual high-water mark. The initial sign-up number typically gets winnowed down by dropouts and people who find other coverage.

For example, the initial number reached 12.7 million this year. But HHS said Wednesday that enrollment averaged 10.4 million people through the end of June, which works out to attrition of about 18 percent.

The administration is hoping for a strong sign-up season to validate the president’s signature program, and for a victory by Democrat Hillary Clinton in the presidential election to shut down the Republican campaign for its repeal. Clinton has outlined steps she’d take to build enrollment and sweeten subsidies for consumers.

Heed DeKalb clerk’s suggestion, keep job part-time DeKalb City Council members are hoping a salary increase will make it easier to find someone to serve an entire term as DeKalb’s city clerk.

In response to the continuing turnover in the city clerk’s office, City Council members have given preliminary approval to a plan to increase the clerk’s salary from $5,000 to $8,000 a year. The clerk is a parttime employee with duties limited to what the law requires: keeper of the city seal, keeper of minutes of board meetings, administering the oath of office and so forth.

The position has seen a series of occupants since Steve Kapitan resigned amid controversy in 2012.

After Kapitan’s departure, City Council members asked again if they could just hire someone to do the job. For a second time, voters said overwhelmingly that they wanted the position to continue to be an elected one. In response, the council stripped the office of all but its legally required duties, reduced the pay from $61,000 to $5,000 a year, and gave all other clerking duties to an assistant clerk who answered to the city manager.

The first person elected to the job after the change, Liz Peerboom, served for more than a year before resigning in frustration at how the clerk had been totally pushed aside.

In the election that followed, a candidate who filed to run as a write-in for the position later withdrew.

Including current Clerk Jennifer Johnson, there have been three fill-ins since Peerboom resigned.

Johnson has asked the city to return some duties to the clerk’s office, and there is a group of residents who are lobbying for the city to restore the office of clerk to an independent office with a full-time, elected leader.

We understand this, as we have questioned in the past the point of electing someone to serve as a figurehead.

But maybe the city doesn’t have to return to the fulltime clerk model just yet. After all, there have been changes made to incorporate a part-time clerk into the City Hall management structure, and adding someone as a full-time boss in the clerk’s office could create changes and budget problems.

We recognize the potential value of having an independent recordkeeper at City Hall who is not afraid of being disciplined if they release information to the public or state an opinion. Johnson has suggested that some of the clerk’s former duties be returned to the office, something that we would support if the position remained part time.

If the next four years include as much instability with the clerk’s salary set at $8,000, it might be time to consider a return to a full-time clerk. For the time being, the council should consider the suggestions of the current clerk but keep the position part-time.

AMENDMENT

The Republican who might have stopped Trump George Will had a good line the other day about the Trump campaign, which is that it will “simplify the GOP’s quadrennial exercise of writing its post-campaign autopsy, which this year can be published Nov. 9 in one sentence: ‘Perhaps it is imprudent to nominate a venomous charlatan.’ ” Since he wrote that column, new accusations about sexual misconduct by Trump have reinforced Will’s conclusion that nominating Trump was a moral and political disaster.

But Will left open a question Republican medical examiners need to ask themselves: Why did Republicans nominate this man in the face of red flags the size of Trump Tower? A lot of explanations have been floated, but Republicans have reached no consensus.

Ask Republicans who oppose Trump who should have been the nominee instead, and even after the fact they cannot agree.

“Anyone else,” or “anyone else but Ben Carson,” are the typical answers, but “anyone” wasn’t on the ballot. The problem, however, isn’t just that Republicans disagree among themselves about whom they should have backed to stop Trump: It’s also that there’s no obviously correct answer.

Consider the options.

Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas was always going to have trouble expanding beyond his base of very conservative and evangelical voters. Gov. John Kasich of Ohio was always going to have trouble expanding beyond moderates. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida was inevitably going to bleed on both his flanks, with moderate Republicans favoring someone more like Kasich and very conserva-

VIEWS Ramesh Ponnuru tive Republicans favoring someone more like Cruz. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, after the first few weeks of his campaign, was clearly not going to dominate the debate stage the way that Mitt Romney did in the 2012 primaries.

In retrospect, it may be that Romney was the only candidate who could have stopped Trump.

Republicans across the spectrum had supported him in 2012, and he still had a lot of goodwill from them at the start of this election cycle.

He was already well-known by the public, and would not have had the difficulty attracting attention that plagued many of the Republicans who actually ran against Trump.

His opposition to an immigration amnesty and his support for a tough stance on trade with China would have weakened Trump’s advantage on both issues.

Romney thought about running but ultimately decided against it – in part because he got panned when he considered it. A lot of people at the time said that he should let new Republican talent come to the fore. I was one of them.

Boy, were we wrong.

Such ministates would have no legitimacy in the eyes of the Iraqi government or people. They likely would fight among themselves over land and oil.

And their creation could give momentum to a total breakup of the Iraqi state, which would create the sort of chaos that allowed Islamic State to thrive in the first place.

This is why the Iraqi government has to come up with a plan now for a temporary ruling authority to take civilian control of Mosul as soon as the fighting ends.

This government would have to allow representation from all the ethnic and religious factions and be committed to religious tolerance and rule of law.

The plan should be made public before the battle ends, which would keep Mosul’s residents calm and

eager to expel the terrorist forces. Equally important is avoiding atrocities by Shiite militia members against the Sunni population for alleged collusion with the terrorists, as occurred after the fights to retake Amerli, Fallujah and Tikrit from Islamic State. Shiite units should be kept out of the center-city fighting entirely.

Ethnic strife is not the only threat to Mosul and its environs.

There is the potential for a monumental refugee crisis.

Nongovernmental groups say there will be capacity for 200,000 refugees at most, while as many as 700,000 are expected to flee.

The Iraqi military is urging civilians to hunker down in their homes until the siege is over, but that seems unlikely.

There also is a plan to screen citizens leaving the city during the battle – including all males older than age 14.

The government should make

clear the criteria used for any detainments, ensure that trained troops and not Shiite militias run the checkpoints, and let human-rights groups monitor the process.

Last, the Iraqi government must not be tempted to make the fight easier by letting the terrorists melt away and return to the Islamic State homeland in Syria, as happened to some extent in Fallujah.

Frank is a Canadian financier who purchased uranium mining concessions in Kazakhstan with the help of Bill and Hillary Clinton. Later, he made uranium mining purchases in the United States as well. The Russians then sought to buy his company, but permission was needed from the United States to sell uranium, which is used in nuclear weapons, to another country.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made sure the deal went through, and Frank became filthy rich. Then nine shareholders from Frank’s company donated a whopping $145 million to the Clinton Foundation. Russia now owns 20 percent of American uranium assets. The Clintons have become rich off backroom deals like this.

The Clintons use of their foundation has come under scrutiny for other reasons. It raised huge sums of money to help earthquake victims in Haiti, but very little of the money ever went to actually help victims there. This has led to protests in the United States by Haitian-Americans.

Former president of the Haitian Senate Bernard Sansaricq said that “the Clin-

tons exploited this terrible disaster to steal billions of dollars from the sick and starving people of Haiti.”

The mainstream media virtually never asked Hillary about the uranium deal, but when a New Hampshire reporter asked her about it she told him that the deal went through before she was secretary of state.

That turned out to be a lie, but not the only one she’s told. She also claimed that while she was first lady, that she was dodging sniper fire at an airport in Bosnia. Video showed that no such thing happened.

Many presidential candidates have lied before, but Hillary’s sniper fire lie was done purely to brag. This makes her a pathological liar.

These scandals, along with her criminal misuse and deletion of more than 30,000 emails, are only a part of Hillary’s overall deception and corruption.

Few doubt that the offensive now underway in Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city, will end Islamic State’s barbaric two-year rule there.

The question is how to manage the aftermath so it doesn’t plunge Iraq back into civil war.

You almost need a scorecard to keep track of all the players in the effort to liberate the ethnically diverse metropolis: the Iraqi army; Iran-backed Shiite militias; a 10,000man Sunni “tribal force”; various Kurdish peshmerga forces; Turkmen, Yazidi, Chaldean and Assyrian Christian resistance groups; and several hundred American special forces backed by U.S. air power.

They are all arrayed against only 5,000 or so Islamic State fighters.

It is a case where the spoils are going to be more problematic than the victory.

Already there is talk in Iraq and the U.S. Congress of turning Mosul and surrounding Ninevah Province into several quasi-autonomous “can-

The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Anthony Rizzo, Addison Russell and the rest of the Chicago Cubs’ bats broke out in a big way.

Rizzo homered and ended a postseason slump with three RBIs, Russell’s tworun drive highlighted a four-run fourth that stopped Chicago’s 21-inning scoreless streak, and the Cubs routed the Los Angeles Dodgers, 10-2, on Wednesday to even the NL Championship Series at 2-all.

Kenta Maeda is set to pitch for the Dodgers in Game 5 on Thursday against Jon Lester. Before the game, manager Dave Roberts said he will not start Clayton Kershaw on short rest after the Los Angeles ace threw a bullpen session

Wednesday.

Chicago ensured the NLCS will return to Wrigley Field for Game 6 on Saturday.

To break out of his prolonged slump, Rizzo used teammate Matt Szczur’s bat.

“I know Szczur’s bat has a lot of hits in it,” Rizzo said. “I’ve done it a few times this year, just switching up the bat, switching up the mindset.”

Following consecutive shutout losses, the Cubs rapped out 13 hits on an 80-degree night with the warm Santa Ana winds fluttering the flags in center field.

Rizzo and Russell had three hits each.

Chicago’s 3-4-5 hitters – a combined 2 for 32 in the first three games – busted out.

Every Cubs starter got at least one hit except Kris Bryant, who walked twice.

“Today was a must-win for us,” Ben Zobrist said.

Los Angeles was limited to six hits and made four errors in a game that dragged on for 3 hours, 58 minutes.

Mike Montgomery won in relief of John Lackey, who was chased after consecutive walks opening the fifth. Four days shy of his 38th birthday, Lackey allowed two runs, three hits and three walks.

Julio Urias, at 20 years, 68 days – the youngest postseason starting pitcher in major league history – gave up four runs and four hits in 32/3 innings. He was the third consecutive left-hander to start the series for Los Angeles.

Chicago rattled off three straight hits to open the fourth, sparked by Zobrist’s leadoff bunt single to third.

“With the way that our bats were swinging it at the beginning of the game,

we just had to do anything we could. That was my thought process,” Zobrist said. “I felt like if he threw a strike, I could get one down in a good spot and was able to do it.”

He took second on Javier Baez’s single to left, and Willson Contreras followed with a single to nearly the same spot in shallow left, scoring Zobrist.

Baez moved up to third and Contreras took second on left fielder Andrew Toles’ errant throw to the plate that skidded all the way to the backstop.

Jayson Heyward hit a run-scoring groundout, and Russell followed with his first extra-base hit since Sept. 30 and his first homer since Sept. 19. He jubilantly pumped an arm as he rounded the bases on his two-run drive, which put the Cubs ahead, 4-0.

DeKalb scores 3 unanswered goals in second half in victory

Trailing by a goal at halftime, the Barbs found themselves with their backs against the wall in an elimination game.

Then they turned it on.

The No. 4 seed Barbs scored three unanswered goals in the second half to defeat No. 5 Rockford Jefferson 3-1 in a Class 3A DeKalb Regional semifinal on a rainy Wednesday night in DeKalb.

“It wasn’t very positive body language (at halftime), the message from the coaches wasn’t very positive – our message was they need to dig deep and show character and fix some fixable things,” DeKalb coach Brett McIntosh said. “I give a ton of credit to our guys for going out in the second half and getting it done. It showed character.

“It hasn’t always been that way this

year. We’ve found ourselves down from time to time and we haven’t been able to dig out of it. I give a ton of credit to the team and the leaders of the team to show character and dig out of the hole in a playoff match. We basically had 40 minutes to save our season.”

It’s the first win in more than two weeks for the Barbs, who went 0-1-3 in the final four regular season games. DeKalb (8-8-4) advances to take on top-seeded McHenry, which defeated Rockford East 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon.

Rockford Jefferson (9-10) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Amado Vazquez and the J-Hawks took that lead into half time. McIntosh had a message for his seniors during the break.

“We hung our heads at halftime and our coaches got on us and told us we have to possess the ball,” DeKalb senior Alonzo Jones said. “Our coaches said that it’s 40 minutes from our senior season being done. We just got together.

We’re mostly junior and seniors.”

The Barbs got the equalizer early in the second half, when Jones found senior Leo Marquez with 34:03 left in the regulation and took the lead Ricardo Sanchez on a deflected ball in front of the net less than six minutes later.

Marquez had a chance to push the lead to two goals four minutes later, but his shot was deflected away by Jefferson goalkeeper Fernando Centeno. DeKalb junior Arben Redzepi had two shots early in the second half, but both were narrowly too high.

However, the Barbs got their third goal after Jones was fouled in the penalty box, and Redzepi made the penalty kick to cap the scoring with 19:23 remaining.

“I think you have to be careful about how quickly you become conservative – there was still quite a bit of time left,” McIntosh said about the mindset after taking a 2-1 lead. “You don’t want

to sit back and give them opportunities to camp out in our offensive third. We wanted to continue to play our way, and as a result we got that third goal off that penalty kick. After we got that third goal, then we transferred back to a more defensive mindset.”

The Barbs controlled the ball late and Jefferson never got any good shots on goal the rest of the way.

However, in order for the Barbs to keep their season alive, they take on the No. 1 seeded McHenry team that comes with a record of 15-5-2. McIntosh said the Warriors are a physical team and said they are the No. 1 seed for a reason.

For Jones, it will be a chance for the Barbs to defend their own field.

“It’s our home field,” Jones said of DeKalb, which is 5-4-3 at home this season. “It’s nothing we haven’t seen before. We’ve played fast teams. We’ve played teams that can possess. I think our team is ready.”

well and came close to tying the score on a couple occasions, but it was Prairie Ridge that got the next goal. The Wolves doubled the lead in the 52nd minute, when Erik Truitt beat Smith with a header inside the box.

Things really began to unwind for the Spartans in the 59th minute, when captain Davis Schmitt was shown a second yellow card, received a red and was sent off. Schmitt came to the sideline saying he had merely asked the referee to adjust the time on the clock.

Bachta said he didn’t get a complete explanation for the red card.

“He said he didn’t like the tone of the way that the player responded to him,” Bachta said. “I guess if you don’t want that tone don’t ask the question. It’s unfortunate, he’s a senior captain. He’s our speaking captain, so he should be able to ask a question. He didn’t swear, there was no language that was used. So it’s just unfortunate. You run into officials that make those kind of decisions.

“I think that really kind of changed, for us, we were keeping a little possession. I thought Prairie Ridge was a good team, they came out and they scored that goal in the first half, and then I thought we came out in the second half strong. But yeah it was a little frustrating there losing David. He’s a captain, a three-year starter, and we missed him in the middle for sure.”

Prairie Ridge added two more goals once it had a man advantage. Ryan Kaufman scored in the 72nd minute, and Alex Pajak scored in the 78th minute.

“It’s a little bit of a breakdown, if you’re going to get that many shots on your eventually a couple of them are going to go in,” Bachta said.

The Spartans’ frustrations with the center referee continued when another captain, Joe O’Brien also was shown a yellow then red just as the final horn sounded.

Smith finished with five saves on the night.

Indians win American League pennant

The Associated Press TORONTO – For the Cleveland Indians, the script was the same every game – hope for the best from whoever they started, then count on Andrew Miller and the bullpen to close it out.

That plan seemed especially dicey in Game 5 of the AL Championship Series, with lightly used Ryan Merritt on the mound.

But out of nowhere, the rookie delivered.

Merritt coolly kept the Indians ahead until reinforcements arrived, and Cleveland earned its first trip to the World Series since 1997 by blanking the Toronto Blue Jays, 3-0, Wednesday.

The 24-year-old lefty defied expectations, shutting down the powerful Blue Jays before exiting in the fifth inning.

Thanks to a most unlikely pitching performance, a most unexpected team won the ALCS, 4-1.

Cleveland, which never has hosted a World Series opener, will play Game 1 at Progressive Field on Tuesday night against the Cubs or Los Angeles Dodgers.

Manager Terry Francona’s team will try to augment what already has been a scintillating year in Cleveland after LeBron James and the Cavaliers

earned the city’s first major pro sports championship since 1964.

The Indians’ title drought dates to 1948. In 1997, they let a one-run lead get away in the bottom of the ninth inning in Game 7 and lost to the Florida Marlins in the 11th.

“We always said if we could do it with this group, it would be so special because this is as close to a family feel as you can get in a professional setting.

So for that part of it, it is beyond feeling good,” Francona said.

The Dodgers led the Cubs 2-1 going into Game 4 of the NLCS on Wednesday night. Cleveland didn’t play either club this season.

Miller, acquired from the New York Yankees in a midseason trade, was selected the ALCS MVP as the Indians took their sixth pennant.

“I feel like I’ve said the word ‘special’ a million times in the last 20 or 30 minutes. But it’s the truth. It’s a blast to be a part of,” Miller said.

With all of 11 major league innings under his belt – and only one start, on Sept. 30 – Merritt took the mound and looked just like a seasoned vet. The lefty retired the first 10 batters and allowed a mere two hits before being pulled after 41⁄3 innings.

“I know they were counting on me,” Merritt said. “Before the game, they

came and told me they had my back, everybody had my back, good or bad.

So that takes some pressure off, and I just went out there and pitched and trusted my team.”

Merritt got taps on his heart and hat from teammates when he left the mound. Then it was up to Cleveland’s tireless relievers to hold a three-run lead against the wild-card Blue Jays.

Miller again did most of the heavy lifting, going 22⁄3 innings before Cody Allen worked the ninth for a save. Winning pitcher Bryan Shaw tossed an inning before Miller came in.

Carlos Santana and Coco Crisp homered for the Indians.

With starting pitchers Carlos Carrasco, Danny Salazar and Trevor Bauer dealing with injuries, the Indians kept defying the odds.

Cleveland overtook defending World Series champion Kansas City and topped a $196 million Detroit team to win the AL Central, then put an abrupt end to Big Papi’s career, sweeping David Ortiz and the Boston Red Sox in the Division Series.

The Indians stayed on a roll in the ALCS, shutting down the banging Blue Jays. Cleveland won despite hitting .168 in the series, with slick-fielding shortstop Francisco Lindor leading the way in going 7 for 19.

Toronto lost in the ALCS for the second straight year.

“I’m sure there will be some disappointments and grumbling and complaining about how you fell short again, but that’s not coming from me,” manager John Gibbons said. “Because I know what these guys did, and I think it’s a pretty good accomplishment. The key is we want to take that next step one of these days. Hopefully, it’s next year.”

Merritt – a Texas native drafted in the 16th round by Cleveland in 2011 – hadn’t pitched in a game since his late September start, although he’d gotten some work in this month in the instructional league at the Indians’ spring training complex in Arizona.

A day after Toronto averted a sweep, the crowd at the roaring Rogers Centre expected the Blue Jays to roll over the rookie.

Maybe the Blue Jays did, too.

“With our experience in our lineup, I’m pretty sure he’s going to be shaking in his boots more than we are,” Toronto slugger Jose Bautista said after Game 4.

After the Blue Jays were eliminated, Bautista took a different tone.

“He seemed to make the right pitches at the right time,” Bautista said.

“Hats off to him.”

HAMPSHIRE – Conceding a late first-half goal, after fighting through 37 scoreless rain-soaked minutes, turned out to be only the beginning of Sycamore’s frustrations Wednesday night in the Spartans’ regional semifinal against Prairie Ridge.

Over the final 40 minutes, Prairie Ridge scored three more times and two Spartans saw red cards as the Wolves went on to beat Sycamore, 4-0, in a 2A Burlington Central Regional semifinal on Wednesday. Prairie Ridge advances to face Hampshire, which beat the hosts in overtime in the first semifinal, in Saturday’s regional final.

Prairie Ridge controlled most of the possession for the first half, with Sycamore looking dangerous in flashes on the break.

“We haven’t all season long kept possession really well so we have to do

what works well for us and that’s try to play our forwards and work off our forwards,” Spartans coach David Bactha said. “They kept possession today, and I thought they did a nice job doing that, kept us on our heels and really counterattacking us well, any time we came down here and lost the ball they had three or four guys going at us all the time.”

The Wolves eventually broke through late in the first half. Sycamore goalkeeper Patrik Smith stopped an initial shot, but the rebound came out to Ryan Barbour who finished it to give Prairie Ridge a 1-0 lead with 2:36 left in the first half.

“That’s a big hit on our momentum going to the second half, but we can’t let that kill us,” Sycamore senior captain Austin Merriness said. “I don’t want to say that killed our vibe, but I believe that’s what did it, and we just didn’t respond properly.”

Kaneland takes big lead, holds on for win in regional semi

sports@daily-chronicle.com MAPLE PARK – Kaneland’s big second half pushed it past higher-seeded Glenbard South in a 4-2 victory Wednesday in a Class 2A Kaneland Regional semifinal.

No. 5 Kaneland (9-11-2) scored three goals in the second half to all but seal a victory against fourth seed Glenbard South (8-8-3), but the Raiders didn’t give up so easily, scoring two goals of their own. But the damage had been done in the semifinal game.

The Knights’ four goals were scored by four different players – Tucker Jahns 13 minutes into the first half, John McCaffrey 11 minutes into the second half, Angel Escontrias with 12 minutes remaining in the game and finally Brian Bartholomew 1:30 later.

The Knights had plenty of scoring chances in this game, forcing 10 shots on goal.

“I thought we played OK today and well enough to win,” Kaneland coach Scott Parillo said. “I think we executed, but we didn’t finish the game right, and we should’ve put the game

away earlier. I hope we can do a better job of that on Friday because Bennett is a pretty darn good team. But we weren’t supposed to win tonight, and we found a way to do it, so we’ll see what happens.”

The Knights held a 4-0 lead over the Raiders with just more than 10 minutes to play when the Raiders responded with goals by Spencer Pyle and William Werner with 8:02 to go in the game. The Raiders had their chances at scoring as well, forcing five shots on goal, but could not seem to get over the hump completely.

“I thought the effort was good, but the execution wasn’t so much,” Glenbard South coach Adam Szyszko said.

“We had a few balls that went inside the 6 yard line that we couldn’t convert or hit the post, and that hurt us bad. It’s a different game when you get down a goal and the other team is chasing versus when you’re down and you have to chase. We have a few key guys out and guys playing in different spots, so the creative part took a little longer today. Credit Kaneland who made the plays and finished today.”

Fox presents earnest but unnecessary ‘Rocky Horror’ remake

here’s a bone-dryness to Fox’s earnest but thoroughly unnecessary remake of the 1975 cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” which comes with the subtitle “Let’s Do the Time Warp Again” and airs tonight.

It’s as if every last available drop of campiness has finally been squeezed from “Rocky Horror,” 41 years after the original film’s release and who knows how many thousands of midnight art-house screenings later. The cast, headed by “Orange Is the New Black’s” Laverne Cox as a legitimately transgender Dr. Frank-N-Furter, works really hard to both replicate and improve upon the original romp, but the big, exaggerated expressions on their faces seem to self-consciously ask, “Are we doing it right?

Is this how it goes?”

Used up, that’s how it feels.

That’s not to say that director and choreographer Kenny Ortega hasn’t devised some clever ways to help an audience of newbies understand “Rocky Horror” as an intentionally bad movie musical meant as a tacky homage to vintage schlock, encouraging devoted participation and giddy ridicule. The central lesson also is intact: “Don’t dream it, be it,” goes a refrain late in the show, and it still reads as an invitation to let out your inner freak.

Things start off in an act of meta-regard as singer Ivy Levan, with big red lips and a movie-theater usherette costume, sings the opening number’s ode to B-movie science fiction while tearing tickets and buttering popcorn for a Saturday night crowd of “Rocky Horror” weirdos, who, when seated, will act out a select few fan rituals during the course of the movie, involving water pistols, newspapers and toilet paper deployed at the right moments. (“Great Scott!”)

It completes a circle – you watch them watch it. Or they watch you watch them watching it.

However this device is intended to work, it at least acknowledges at the outset that “Rocky Horror” hardly stands on it own dubious merits; its success thoroughly depends on its rambunctious audience.

That’s why it’s disappointing that Fox ordered “Rocky” as a movie instead of as a live event, similar to its impressively manic staging of “Grease: Live” this year. The interactive possibilities, particularly in the age of Snapchat and Twitter, might have helped renew the movie’s communal sense of fun.

As it is, Cox and her fellow cast mates indeed sing, dance, sashay and gesticulate lasciviously in the traditional “Rocky Horror” manner (things perk up especially when Adam Lambert, as Eddie, rolls in on his motorbike for a number), but the overall result is just a tad too inert.

(Curry is here too, mostly recovered from a 2012 stroke and taking the role of the criminologist who narrates the movie.)

As the newly engaged nerdos Brad and Janet, Ryan McCartan and Victoria Justice out-sing their predecessors (Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon) but can’t match their faux-virginal shock at the debaucherous goings-on at Frank-N-Furter’s castle.

It speaks to the cultural distance between 1975 and 2016: What’s shocking anymore, even if you’re pretending to be shocked?

The musical numbers are good enough, as a stranded Brad and Janet make their way through a thunderstorm to the castle (“Over at the Frankenstein Place”) and are greeted at the door by Riff Raff (Reeve Carney, whose approach to the role is far too hyperactive), and escorted to an already-in-progress party, where they learn the “Time Warp,” which remains the show’s best number.

From there, things tend to fall apart - as they always did, but movie audiences by then were too involved (or schnockered) to notice. Frank-N-Furter unveils her ultimate creation, a Charles Atlas-inspired muscle man named Rocky (Staz Nair). Not too long after, she separately seduces Brad and Janet. In an orgiastic celebration of sexual awakening, Frank-N-Furter is revealed to be an alien and

sentenced to death – but not before one last number, a ballad, in which she is dressed as Fay Wray sitting in a King Kong hand.

Lovely as that image is, this new “Rocky Horror” can’t disguise the musical bloat in the film’s second half. Even now I can recall suburban strip-mall multiplex “Rocky Horror” screenings in the 1980s when audience members peeled off long before the movie’s finale, hoping to get home and avoid being grounded for blowing curfew.

True fans, of course, never saw any of this as a chore to be endured to the bitter end. “Rocky Horror’s” lasting success has to do with its open-door policy for anyone who felt different in any way. It was a social outlet in a time when such phenomena were few – and you could find a screening of it within 50 miles of Nowheresville just as easily as you could attend screenings in New York or L.A. Remarkably enough, according to a “Rocky Horror” fan site, there still are roughly 90 groups of devotees who flock to local movie theaters for midnight screenings and costumed re-enactments (and movie theater employees who still have to clean up after the show), if not every Saturday night, then on a monthly basis.

It’s hard to tell whether this new version will reaffirm their faith – or if it’s even meant to. Ortega and company could have risked sacrilege and messed around more with “Rocky Horror,” not only trimming its length and improving its plot, but perhaps also teasing some new relevance out of the material. As it is, they’ve made a fresh copy, but it plays very much like a copy and nothing more.

The Associated Press) WASHINGTON – Emma Stone and Jane Curtin are late additions to the lineup of performers who’ll celebrate Bill Murray when he receives the nation’s top prize for humor.

The Kennedy Center announced Tuesday that Stone and Curtin will take the stage in honor of Murray on Sunday night.

Murray is this year’s recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

Curtin performed with Murray on “Saturday Night Live.” Stone co-starred with him in the little-seen movie “Aloha.”

Also new to the lineup are musician Rhiannon Giddens and Ivan Reitman, who directed Murray in “Ghostbusters.” Murray’s co-star in that movie, Dan Aykroyd, has dropped out of the event. The Kennedy Center said he has a scheduling conflict.

Previously announced performers include David Letterman, Sigourney Weaver and Aziz Ansari.

Cor Cantiamo choir to give world-premiere performance DAILY CHRONICLE The professional chamber choir, Cor Cantiamo, will present the world-premiere performance of “The Seven Heavens,” written by Grammy-nominated British composer James Whitbourn, at 8 p.m.

Nov. 3, in the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall in the Music Building at Northern Illinois University.

This multi-movement work is a musical biography of the author C.S. Lewis and scored for chamber choir and seven instrumentalists.

There will be a pre-concert lecture about the creation of this new work by James Whitbourn at 7 p.m.

Frozen shoulder resolves on its own Dear Dr. K: What exactly is a frozen shoulder, and can I do anything to speed up the healing process?

Dear Reader: Everyday, temporary shoulder aches and stiffness are common. Frozen shoulder is different. The shoulder starts to ache, particularly when you move it. Lifting a pan from the stovetop, brushing your hair, scratching your back – they all hurt.

So you move your shoulder less. The pain and mobility become substantially worse over time. The condition usually affects just one shoulder.

Pain and loss of mobility of a shoulder can be caused by other conditions, too.

Arthritis of the shoulder or an infection in the shoulder joint, for example, can cause similar symptoms.

What is frozen shoulder? The bones, ligaments and tendons that make up your shoulder joint are wrapped in a capsule of connective tissue. Frozen shoulder occurs when this capsule thickens and becomes inflamed.

The inflammation and thickening of the shoulder capsule often results from shoulder injury or surgery. A common type of shoulder injury that can lead to frozen shoulder is a tear in the rotator cuff.

Your risk also increases if you have any of several other underlying medical conditions. Examples include diabetes, various autoimmune diseases or conditions that cause you to use the shoulder less, such as a stroke or Parkinson’s disease.

The trademark symptoms include pain and worsening stiffness. At first, the shoulder is painful, but range of motion is still good. As the condition progresses, range of motion begins to decrease. By the time the shoulder eventually becomes “frozen,” much of the pain has resolved, but you have difficulty moving your shoulder at all.

The entire cycle from early symptoms to recovery can last from nine months to two years.

Frozen shoulder has three stages: freezing, frozen and thawing. Here are some things you can do at each stage to move your recovery along, or at least ease discomfort.

• Freezing. This is the slow, gradual buildup of pain and stiffness. Over time, you notice the shoulder losing more of its range of motion as the capsule becomes thicker.

During this period, the inflamed shoulder can be quite painful. Occasional steroid injections can help ease the discomfort, but may not speed recovery. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Advil), also can help.

• Frozen. The pain begins to lessen, but your range of motion is the most limited. It is still hard to lift your arm overhead. And you often have difficulty with everyday movements, such as dressing or reaching into your back pocket. In some cases, arthroscopic surgery may help loosen the joint capsule so it can move more freely.

• Thawing. Stiffness goes away as the shoulder begins to heal. This is when you begin stretching exercises and formal therapy to help restore flexibility and range of motion.

We are both parents, both 30, so it’s hard for me to understand how someone could do this to a person you’ve had a history with and claim to love. It seems like a child’s reaction. I’m finding it hard to move past this, because I have no idea what happened.

I feel blindsided. Could she have been hurt or died? I have no one to contact and no way to know. My question is, how does one go about moving past this, since it wasn’t a typical breakup? – Can’t Go Forward Dear Can’t Go: What the person did was cowardly, but I’m sorry to say it isn’t that unusual these days. What is unusual is during the four years you were in a relationship, you never met any of her friends or family, and have no idea how to contact her. Are you absolutely sure she is who she claimed to be and not a catfisher?

I have family who live in another city and have a medium-sized active dog. I have invited them to visit me in my newly built home, which has soft pine floors throughout. I mentioned to them I would like to supply dog booties when they visit so their dog’s claws would not scratch my brand-new floors.

I have tried inviting them numerous times over the past two years, but they always have an excuse why they can’t visit. Another family member told me a comment was made, “If we have to put booties on our dog and they want a showcase home, then it will be empty of us.”
