Police seek info about shots fired READER POLL in the air after DeKalb murder YESTERDAY’S DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Police are seeking information about shots fired into the air Oct. 7 in a DeKalb neighborhood a day after a man was murdered in the area.

Debrece Shields, 25, was fatally shot about 10:30 p.m. Oct. 6 in the 800 block of Kimberly Drive. The next day, DeKalb police were called to a parking lot at 831 Kimberly Drive on a report of shots fired about 10:25 p.m. Two vehicles reportedly were seen leaving the area, according to a news release from DeKalb County Crime Stoppers.

Those responsible could be charged with reckless discharge of a firearm.

DeKalb Police Chief Gene Lowery previously told the Daily Chronicle that the shot were fired as a memorial to Shields.

David Walls, 18, of Chicago, and Nico Griggs, 27, of Park Forest, have been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated unlawful use of a firearm in connection with the shooting death.

Crime Stoppers also is seeking information about a burglary Oct. 7 in Genoa. Someone broke into Cleary Pallet Sales, 32570 Genoa Road, entered the office and stole cash along with other items. A second burglary was reported during the overnight hours of Oct. 13 and Oct. 14; someone entered the building, but nothing appeared to have been taken, police said.

Anyone with information about the crimes is asked to call DeKalb County Crime Stoppers at 815-895-3272. Callers do not have to give their names.

Crime Stoppers will pay a cash reward up to $1,000; callers can remain anonymous.

5 more states vote on minimum wages

DENVER – Congress’ inaction on the $7.25 hourly minimum wage is again playing out on state ballots, with voters in four states considering an increase and another considering wages for the youngest workers, even though the states already exceed the federal. In some cases voters are also deciding whether to add sick-leave policies to help the working poor.

The ballot proposals in Arizona, Colorado, Maine and Washington come two years after voters in five other states passed minimum-wage hikes. South Dakota voters are taking a second crack at wages, two years after raising them to $8.50 an hour.

Is it a slam dunk that this year’s measures will pass, too? Maybe. Even the classic opponents to a higher minimum wage – restaurant associations and small-business groups – are running muted campaigns to oppose the wage measures.

“It almost always passes when it gets on the ballot,” said Jerold Waltman, a political scientist at Baylor University who has written extensively about minimum wage and politics.

“Most Americans have a fundamental sense of fairness, that if you work, you ought to make enough to make a living wage on. Democrats and Republicans seem to agree on this.”

Four of the wage measures are only slightly different. Arizona, Colorado and Maine are considering phased-in $12 hourly minimum wages by 2020. In Washington state, where the minimum wage is $9.47 an hour, voters are considering a higher minimum wage, $13.50 an hour by 2020. The measures in Arizona and Washington also require employers to give paid sick leave.

Voters in South Dakota are looking at the minimum wage for the second time in as many years. They will consider a so-called “referred law” to overturn a state law passed in reaction to a 2014 vote raising the minimum to $8.50, with the wage pegged to inflation.

A LESSON IN LACROSSE Lacrosse comes to DeKalb Park District

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – The fastest-growing sport in the country has come to DeKalb, and kids from kindergarten through high school were able to learn about lacrosse Saturday morning at the DeKalb Park District’s second of three Try Lacrosse Days.

Jeff Myles, athletic coordinator at the DeKalb Park District, wants the community to know that a lacrosse program is available to kids, and that the Try Lacrosse Days are a great introduction to the sport.

“This is a great source of exercise for kids and a potential sport for them to play throughout life,” he said. “Kids in this generation are playing more nontraditional sports now, and we’re aware of that. So we want to bring the sports they want to play to the park district for the community.”

The park district sponsors the Northern Illinois Stampede, a club lacrosse team made up of area high school students, and the staff hopes to generate enough interest in the sport to have teams for elementary and junior high-aged children. Kids of all ages filled the park district’s Sports and RecCenter’s indoor field to experiment with lacrosse sticks and learn the rules and objectives of the game with the help of players and coaches from the Stampede.

Jordan Busca, a teacher at DeKalb High School and the Stampede coach, described lacrosse as a cross between soccer and hockey. Ten players, including a goalie, are on the field at a time, and the objective is to use a stick to throw a small, hard ball into a net.

Busca played lacrosse when he was in high school and said the sport is great for all kids.

“It’s so much fun, and all the kids who go out for it enjoy it,” he said. “Lacrosse gives kids who aren’t good at traditional sports a chance to play a sport and be on a team, and they often excel at it. If kids have good conditioning and endurance, they can learn how to play. If they practice, as with anything, they’ll get good at it.”

Andrea Covarrubias, 15, has been watching her cousins play lacrosse for a while, and always has wanted to try it. The Sycamore High School student said she was excited to play for the first time Saturday.

Seth Richardson, 13, said he was having a lot of fun playing the sport and was happy to have an opportunity to try it.

“It’s very fun. It reminds me of using a catapult, and I like machinery,” the Huntley Middle School eighth-grader said.

Kevin Malone, 10, said he felt a little discouraged because he was having trouble with the stick, but was still having fun.

“I’m glad I came out today, because I wanted to know what it was like.

It’s constant running, and I’m good at running around,” the home-schooled DeKalb resident said.

“Lacrosse is a great sport that promotes physical activity. It can be hard sometimes, but you have to put in hard work to get results. It’s a fun contact sport, and I’ve met a lot of great friends by playing,” he said.

Bill Ryder, superintendent of recreation, said that the park district wanted to be the first in the area to offer lacrosse because he felt there was an interest in the sport that wasn’t being served. He said that he was pleased with Saturday’s turnout, and that all the kids seemed to be having fun.

“It’s nice to have a variety of age groups here. I want them to get an appreciation for the sport,” he said.

The DeKalb Park District will hold its third and final Try Lacrosse Days from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, at the Sports and RecCenter. The event is free and open to the public.

Historical society marks three stations from Sycamore to Somonauk

news@daily-chronicle.com A history of abolitionism in DeKalb County was remembered Saturday with the erection of historical markers at sites that once served as stations along the Underground Railroad.

The DeKalb County Historical-Genealogical Society commemorated three stations, or places where runaway slaves were housed while en route to Canada, in a three-part ceremony that took dozens of onlookers from Sycamore to Somonauk.

Although three sites of significance to the Underground Railroad were formally recognized, landmarks committee chair Barry Schrader said there are many more because of the DeKalb County residents’ willingness to break the law and aid runaway slaves.

“It’s nice to see it finally being completed,” Sandy Lyon, DeKalb County Historical-Genealogical Society president, said about the two-year project started by Schrader and local historian Steve Bigolin. “It’s been a long journey.”

One of the markers stands in front of a 19th century white farmhouse with black shutters along Old State Road.

The house appears almost exactly how Deacon David West left it.

West was one of many of what author Nancy Beasley called “conductors” along the Underground Railroad in DeKalb County.

From 1843 to 1859, he housed and transported hundreds of runaway slaves, most of whom had traveled from Southern states along the Mississippi River and then through Quincy, Ill., seeking freedom in Canada, where slavery had been outlawed in 1833, Beasley wrote in her book, “The Underground Railroad in DeKalb County, Illinois.”

Laws prohibiting citizens of Northern states from aiding runaway slaves, including the Compromise of 1850 that made the action a federal offense, prompted conductors to act carefully.

West would house runaway slaves for a few days at most, hiding them in one of many secret rooms he built on his property if curious neighbors or bounty hunters approached, and transport his guests in the middle of the night to the next station in St. Charles, where

another conductor would house and transport them to the coast of Lake Michigan – the most direct route to Canada, Beasley wrote.

West’s great-great-grandson, Harlen Persinger, attended the weekend ceremonies, which also took place at Mayfield Congregational Church in Sycamore and the Somonauk United Presbyterian Church. Recognition from the DeKalb County Historical-Genealogical Society was another chapter in a 40-year-long search to find out more about his ancestors, Persinger said.

He recounted a story about West in which he was pursued by a sheriff who was after two runaway slaves with a $10,000 bounty.

In the story, the sheriff was told that West could smell danger from a mile away and could shoot that far if he had to.

“The sheriff turned back thinking more of his own head than of the reward,” Persinger said. “I only wish that David West could be here today. I have no idea what that man would say or how he would feel, but I’m sure he would have a lot of pride.”

Upon returning home from the Navy, he enrolled at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN, graduating in 1949 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree.

He then moved to the Chicago area. It was there that he met his future wife, Jeanne Stoeffler. They were married September 14, 1951 in Buena Memorial Presbyterian Church in Chicago. He and his family moved to Sycamore in 1967where he became employed by Northern Illinois University.

Over the years, he worked for Arthur Andersen and Company, Electro-Motive Division of General Motors in LaGrange, Illinois, and Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. He worked for NIU for 19 years in the Division of Business Affairs where he held positions of Chief Accountant, Assistant Controller, and Acting Controller before retiring in 1986.

He was an active member of Sycamore United Methodist Church since 1967, where he served on various committees over the years. Most often the Finance Committee.

His favorite volunteer job was Hope Haven, where he was treasurer for 17 years and served on the Board of Directors for 24 years.

He always enjoyed participating in various sports and card games, and was a fan of the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Bears, and NIU Huskies. His family was his pride and joy.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanne of Sycamore; one son, Bruce (Deborah) Johnson of Rochelle; two daughters, Nancy (Andrew) Pitsch of Sterling and Brenda (Brian) Henke of Clare; his grandchildren, Ethan (Amy) Pitsch, Victoria (Andy) Nuetzel, Nate (Kristen) Lienau, Whitney (Brandon) Keilman, Richard Henke, Matthew Henke, Briana Henke, Ken (Shelly) Johnson, Kelly (Jeff) Newman, Kristina (Tom) Johnson, Kevin Johnson and Amy (Paul) Purtell; 14 great grandchildren; and 5 great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Johnson; sisters, Lois Sponberg, and Alice Wolf; his parents; and a granddaughter, Jennifer Pitsch.

His visitation will be on Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Sycamore United Methodist Church and from 9:30 AM until the time of service on Wednesday at the Church. His funeral service will be on Wednesday, October 19 at 10:30 AM at the Sycamore United Methodist Church, 160 Johnson Ave., Sycamore, with Rev. Harlene Harden officiating. Burial will be at the Elmwood Cemetery.

Why are you the best candidate for this office?

I have big goals if Sycamore elects me to this office. I’d like to work with my colleagues to create solutions to make DeKalb County more attractive for future home owners and businesses. While Illinois is seeing its residents flee due to the state’s fiscal issues, I’m seeking solutions to keep what we have here and add more. Small business owners and homeowners are struggling as it is with the amount of taxes they pay. I’ve talked with residents all over the fourth district in Sycamore, they love this city but are concerned that rising taxes are driving more of their neighbors and jobs away. Sycamore deserves someone who will look out for them on the county board and will keep them in mind when it comes to voting on spending tax dollars. Someone who will use good judgment to determine whether a proposal is worth spending on or reject. Paraphrasing Mr. Olson in a May 6th letter, every year we fail to reform or even to make it the slightest bit more bearable for property owners, we hurt ourselves financially. In the end, it results in more people and businesses leaving our area. I want to stop that.

I was asked to serve in this office by members of our community who saw my lifelong knowledge of the county, experience in business, community service, leadership and innovative drive as a constructive and creative voice on the County Board.

What recent County Board decision do you disagree with the most and why?

Since my appointment to this seat a little over a year ago I have found the current board to be more cohesive and significantly less partisan than the prior two times I served on the County Board. No recent decisions come to mind with which I have serious disagreement.

Due in large part to the state budget crisis, many of DeKalb County’s human service providers are struggling. What can the County Board do to help them continue to provide services to the county’s most at-risk residents?

This is a difficult situation for everyone in the county. Ultimately, our county is making significant cuts and can’t afford to continue additional funding without risking the county’s two year goal of a balanced budget for 2017. General decline in revenue here in DeKalb County as well as the fiscal dysfunction in Springfield has resulted in Illinois counties around the state having to make tough fiscal decisions on their own. There are always options, such as the county helping to fund these human service providers, however that will put us over our budget along with the many other expenditures and would, therefore, delay the goal of having a balanced budget for quite some time. Another option is to fund the providers and balance the budget in time, however the significant cuts mentioned earlier would have to be “more significant” and result in not only denying requests to add more personnel to county departments, but additional staffing cuts and services elsewhere would be required to keep the budget in the black and not the red. This would be undesirable with the public at large, assistance and consulting with the state would be needed.

We need to lead and support aligning local opportunities for enhancing collaboration and collective impact of county resources along all sectors – government, faith community, nonprofit, business and individual. These resources need to be directed to the highest needs backed by data and evidence based solutions and practices. Involvement with the DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership will help the county understand the challenges of our local nonprofits. We need to remove impediments where possible and support a county 2-1-1 system as a local resource and referral system to connect residents to resources. Over the past several years the county has done serious belt tightening in its own health and human services budgets in response to significant reductions in state and federal grants to the county. Maintaining non-mandated services may be at risk without additional funding either from the recovery in grant income or additional tax revenue.

How can the County Board help to improve the business climate locally and promote job growth?

DeKalb County has much to offer for businesses. Among them is its critical geographic location being close to the Chicagoland suburbs and Rockford. Whether it’s taking I-88, IL routes 72, 64, 38, 23 or U.S. routes 30, 34, businesses can rely on establishing their locations along these heavy traffic routes and near local urban areas such as Sycamore, DeKalb, Sandwich and Genoa. Also, because of the space there is ample opportunity for growth of all types of businesses and with a county population north of 100,000, there are plenty of customers and new hire employees. Having a university and community college so close to one another is also attractive to small businesses looking to set up shop in an area that takes higher education very seriously. Our county is attractive to businesses, and we can seal the deal when we cut so much of the red tape. Excessive regulations and taxes discourage businesses from functioning, and our county has an opportunity to remove the regulations and cut taxes to invite businesses elsewhere to stay in Illinois instead of moving to Indiana and Wisconsin.

The county is laying a foundation for attracting and maintaining new business and jobs in several was: (1) Conducting a county-wide economic Vision in coordination with municipalities, (2) initiating strategic economic planning, (3) recently launched DeKalb County Enterprise Zone (http://dekalbcounty.org/ CountyBoard/enterprisezone.html) and (4) in August, opened the DeKalb County Small Business Incubator. The County needs to continue to play a significant role in these economic development efforts and its support of the DeKalb County Economic Development Corporation. Additionally, the County needs make sure the services it provides are business and community focused and delivered in a manner that encourages businesses and people to move to and stay in our County.

The latest county budget proposal calls for balancing the budget while sacrificing county jobs. What should be the county’s priorities?

Just like with any budget, it’s a review of the money coming in and out. It’s crucial determining what’s necessary to spend money on and also that there is still enough money left. One should always have reserves to prepare for unexpected expenses (“rainy day funds”), but these reserves should not be dipped into frequently. When expenses mount and/or revenue declines, decisions must be made on what can be saved and what needs to be cut so as to not remain in debt. DeKalb County is one of the few counties in Illinois that is still in the black, but it won’t last long if we continue each year going through our reserves. Until we take steps to make our county more business friendly by reducing regulations and taxes, the county will continue to slowly shrink in population and jobs move elsewhere, and the accompanying revenue fall. With weak economic growth, we’ll need to continue being mindful of our expenses each year during budget time until the economic climate changes. The current priority remains in trying to keep as many county staff as possible, and allow more revenue into our county by inviting more families and businesses to settle here.

The safety of our community needs to be out top priority. This includes more than law enforcement.

Being prepared for weather, health crisis and active shooter disasters is also critical. Closely tied to safety is infrastructure – maintaining the county’s roads and bridges. Beyond these top priorities are the other duties of the county: enforcing regulations and providing other services (including economic development). There are two basic kinds of regulations and services: those that are mandated and those that are not mandated. We need to make sure that non-mandated regulations and services are necessary and essential to the community.

We also need to make sure that all county regulations and services are deployed in a manner that support and serve our residents and businesses. It is important to analyze the impact of reducing staff and resources in light of meeting theses priorities, not just for the current budget year, but also with an eye on several years (and in some cases, decades) going forward. These decisions are not simple (or easy). Experience, collaboration, creativity and leadership should be vital attributes of those who we select to make these decisions.

While I do agree in having the jail expansion, I’m concerned with several additional costs that could be done without at this present time in the FY 2017 Budget Recommendation. Among them, Court Services has requested an additional pre-trial officer at a cost of $79,000 per salary and benefits. Although the goal is to reduce the jail population and its associated costs, acknowledging there would be savings with the position though is still unclear on how much exactly it would be to offset costs. When the new jail opens in 2018, a better assessment can be made at that time after reviewing what the revenue from the county will look like then. In addition, the original Jail project included a half basement that was to be constructed. However, an alternate bid was presented which would allow the construction of a full basement. Although additional space is helpful, it leaves me curious why a full basement wasn’t included in the initial Jail project if needed and now additional money is spent for this.

Examples such as the salary/benefits of a third Pre-Trial officers and expanding the basement could be used to help other under-staffed county departments needing additional part-time personnel.

STATE AP review: Mixed results for heroin crime immunity

Reeling from a surge in heroin overdoses, authorities in the Cincinnati area made an offer: Hand in potentially deadly drugs and you won’t be charged.

But the blanket immunity granted by a judge there over a month ago hasn’t brought in any heroin so far.

Results from similar efforts elsewhere, including in Illinois have also yielded few drugs, according to a review by The Associated Press. Still, that hasn’t dissuaded supporters who, along with officials nationwide, feel that their backs are against the wall as they try to fight the opiate crisis.

“Turn it in, get it off the streets; get it out of your homes, out of your families,” Dr. Lakshmi Sammarco, the Hamilton County coroner, pleaded last month.

She and other county leaders had hoped people would willingly come forward with deadly drugs when a judge granted their request for blanket immunity on Sept. 7. But as of Tuesday, the prosecutor’s office had yet to hear about any drugs being turned in to any local law enforcement agency in the

6 people shot, 1 fatally, during party at Rockford hotel

ROCKFORD – A 23-year-old man died and five other people were injured in a shooting early Sunday at a private party inside a Rockford hotel.

The shooting occurred after several people attending a large birthday party at the Clock Tower Resort and Conference Center got into a dispute, Rockford police Sgt. Rich Gambini told the Rockford Register Star.

Police were called to the scene at 12:50 a.m. after a report of shots fired. They found 23-year-old Marcello Brown, who was pronounced dead at the scene, on the hallway floor.

“It was chaotic, and people were running from the scene,” Gambini said.

“It’s an important part of the [heroin treatment] program, but it’s not the focus. It sends a message to people struggling that we’re not here to arrest you. We’re here to help you.”

“The tangible drug is just the surface, and with no available access to treatment, you’re essentially yelling to a drowning person, ‘Just keep swimming!’ without actually throwing a life preserver,” said Steve Lesnikoski, 31, the first to go through a pioneering heroin treatment program in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

Pay increase for village mayor would boost pension

ORLAND PARK – A published report said a proposed salary boost for a suburban Chicago mayor could have a big effect on his pension, resulting in payouts of more than $1 million over 10 years of retirement.

Officials: Homeless situation worsening in Sterling-Rock Falls

STERLING – Officials in the Sterling-Rock Falls area are pushing to keep a homeless shelter open year-round.

The Daily Gazette reported that advocates said homelessness in the two cities and

supporting Gloucester’s and some 160 similar efforts nationwide.

“Just to be 100 percent clear, we don’t view our programs as offering ‘immunity’ for people in possession of illegal drugs,” he said. “We are offering access to treatment without arrest, shame or judgment, and if participants happen to bring in drugs, police will gladly receive and destroy them.”

Dixon Police Chief Dan Langloss agreed: “It’s an important part of the program, but it’s not the focus. It sends a message to people struggling that we’re not here to arrest you. We’re here to help you.”

Simply offering immunity for turning in drugs isn’t enough; programs need to offer ways of ending the cycle of drug abuse, arrest and incarceration, addiction experts say.

But the ultimate impact of programs like Gloucester’s remains to be seen.

Advocates cite lower rates of drug-related crimes such as shoplifting and burglary and fewer fatal overdoses, but independent analysts caution there are likely other factors contributing to those declines. And no published data yet show how addicts fare after treatment.

Death of cyclist sparks update in Ill. driver’s manual

MOUNT PROSPECT – A new entry will be added to the Illinois 2017 publication of the official “Rules of Road” after a Mount Prospect mother of five was struck and killed by an SUV while riding her bike in a crosswalk.

Although the entry has not yet been written, it will explain that when the crosswalk signal is activated and the lights are flashing, drivers need to stop until pedestrians and bicyclists have safely crossed the road, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Dave Drucker, a spokesman for the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office, confirmed the new entry for 2017 and said the office is grateful to state Rep. David Harris for making the request for change.

Harris, who passes the crosswalk twice daily on his way to his office, said the new entry is a must for drivers to be aware of the crosswalk signal.

“I thought, ‘My gosh. How are drivers supposed to know about it?’ ” Harris said.

Since the death of Mount Prospect resident Joni Beaudry, 55, on June 9, residents of the area have found the current crosswalk signal to be confusing and argued that it is dangerous and should be removed.

Pence: GOP ticket to accept election outcome ‘absolutely’

WASHINGTON – Mike Pence said Sunday that he and Donald Trump will abide by “the will of the American people” on Election Day, and suggested that Trump’s claim of a “rigged” election stems from his belief the media is ganging up on him.

“We will absolutely accept the results of the election,” Pence said in TV interviews.

He said Trump’s complaint, articulated from the campaign stage and across Twitter but without evidence, reflects fatigue with “the obvious bias in the national media. That’s where the sense of a rigged election goes here.”

Not long after Pence said that, Trump partly undermined his comments.

“The election is absolutely being rigged by the dishonest and distorted media pushing Crooked Hillary – but also at many polling places,” Trump tweeted. “SAD.” Pence’s words were the latest attempt by Trump’s surrogates to attempt to explain that some things the GOP presidential nominee has said and tweeted are not what he meant.

Much of that cleanup duty has fallen to Pence little more than three weeks before the Nov. 8 vote. Trump is struggling to shift the focus away from mounting accusations that he sexually assaulted women in ways similar to what he is recorded describing on a recently released video. HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. – A local Republican Party office in North Carolina was torched by a flammable device and someone spray-painted an anti-GOP slogan referring to “Nazi Republicans” on a nearby wall, authorities said Sunday.

A bottle filled with flammable liquid was thrown through the window of the Orange County Republican Party headquarters overnight, according to a news release from the town of Hillsborough. The substance ignited and damaged the interior before burning out. No one was injured.

The news release from authorities said an adjacent building was spray-painted with the words: “Nazi Republicans leave town or else.”

State GOP executive director Dallas Woodhouse said people sometimes work after-hours, and he felt lucky that no one was there at the time.

Threatening to jail a political opponent and fueling public distrust of a popular election – to explain his loss, should that happen – was a striking breach of faith in American democracy. He has repeatedly claimed, without offering evidence, that election fraud is a serious problem and encouraged his mostly white supporters to “go and watch” polling places in certain areas to make sure things are “on the up and up.”

It was left to Pence and another Trump surrogate, former New York City Rudy Giuliani, to explain on national television what their own candidate meant.

“When he talks about a rigged election, he’s not talking about the fact that it’s going to be rigged at the polls,” Giuliani said. “What he’s talking about is that 80 percent to 85 percent of the media is against him.”

Koch network focuses on GOP Senate, not Trump

FAIRLESS HILLS, Pa. – To the Republicans in the red “Can’t Afford Katie” T-shirts, it’s as if Donald Trump doesn’t even exist.

These activists have been sprinting through Pennsylvania neighborhoods, talking to people about how bad Democrat Katie McGinty would be as a U.S. senator. Here to help save Republican Sen. Pat Toomey – and, more broadly, the party’s control of the Senate – are employees and volunteers for Americans for Prosperity, the best-known group financed by conservative billionaires Charles and David Koch.

Similar scenes are playing out in North Carolina, Florida and Ohio.

In addition to having nail-biting Senate rac- David Koch es this year, those four states are some of the most important battlegrounds in the presidential race. Yet the Koch activists interacting with millions of people who could be Trump’s most crucial voters aren’t supposed to utter a word about him or Hillary Clinton, a Democrat they’d been preparing for years to attack.

Four years after spending heavily in a futile effort to prevent President Barack Obama’s second term, the Kochs have pushed all of their resources down ballot. And their resources are ample: They’re on track to spend about $250 million on policy and politics in the two years leading to Election Day. The brothers and many of their wealthy donor friends who fund the political and policy groups known as the Koch network have no interest in backing Trump. In a TV interview in April, Charles Koch called Clinton

and Trump “terrible role models” and trashed Trump’s “monstrous” proposal for a temporary ban of foreign Muslims entering the U.S. In the months since, while many Republicans flipped back and forth as to whether to support their nominee, the Kochs never considered engaging in a Trump-Clinton match, even when some donors pressed them at a conference in August.

Instead, Koch groups have spent about $42 million on TV, radio and digital advertising in Senate races. As of this month, they have abandoned paid media altogether, preserving their money for what is a much more critical hole to plug: door-to-door advocacy.

Trump’s campaign has eschewed traditional political grunt work, leaving that to overworked national and state Republican parties, which must advocate for GOP candidates from Trump down to the local council members.

Outside groups led by a former chief of staff to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., continue to spend on ads – they’ll hit about $100 million

by Election Day. But the Senate GOP campaigns could really use help on the ground, and that’s where the Koch network comes in. Americans for Prosperity and other groups employ more than 1,200 across 36 states.

To operate as effectively as possible, the Kochs’ data analytics shop, called i360, identified what it believes are 5 million Senate control-deciding voters in eight states. Those voters are either Republicans who seem unenthusiastic this year, perhaps turned off by the ugliness of presidential race, or people who hadn’t quite made up their minds about the Senate contest but lean Republican.

Roughly 600,000 of those key voters are in Pennsylvania.

He was born May 16, 1925 in Elgin the son of Frank W. and Martha L Tredup Trupp.

He had been a resident of the Elgin area for most of his life and was a postal carrier with the Elgin Post Office before retiring.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in W.W. II. He was a member of American Legion Post 57, Elgin and VFW Post 2327South Elgin.

Surviving are his 5 children, Ken (Barbara) Trupp of Genoa, Allen (Molly) Trupp of Elgin, Patricia (Gregory) Novak of Elgin, Howard (Susan) Trupp of Genoa, GiGi (Richard) Collingbourne of Genoa; 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 2 step great grandchildren and a step great great granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gladys Riebock Trupp; 2 daughters, Linda and Dorothy Trupp; and a brother, Marvin Trupp.

Olle T. Larson, 96, died on Thursday, October 13, 2016 on the farm that he treasured in the home he helped build south of Belvidere.

The fourth of eight children born to Simeon and Jenny (Swenson) Larson, Olle was born May 17, 1920 on a small farm named Kulla in Bollebygd, Vastergotland, Sweden. Emigrating by boat from Sweden, Olle arrived with his mother and siblings in the United States on Christmas Eve of 1924 at Ellis Island and would later reach Rockford Illinois, where he would spend his childhood and survive the Great Depression. In January of 1939, Olle began his career in industry at Ed Elliot’s welding shop and later that same year graduated from Rockford High School. On July 29, 1942, Olle married his beloved wife Jeanette Driscoll at the Old Stone Church in Rockton IL. In an effort to obtain his citizenship, Olle enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 and served in the Pacific Theater as a ships fitters first class. As a ships fitter first class, Olle played a necessary role repairing many of the landing crafts used by Douglas MacArthur’s forces in New Guinea and the Philippines. A bronze star recipient, Olle was honorably discharged from

with his family. In 1979, Olle married Mary Lou Myers, his lifelong neighbor on Old State Road in Kirkland. They were married for 29 years until she passed away in 2008. He continued to live on Old State Road until 2010 when he moved in with his son, Alan Larson. Up until the end, Olle was a very goal directed man. Some of his final words shortly before he passed was “what’s on the docket for today?”

Survivors include his children, Alan Larson, Don Larson; step-children, Lee (Linda) Myers, Jack (Terry) Myers, and Dan (Lynn) Myers; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his first wife, Jeanette Larson and then by his second wife Mary Louise Larson.

OLLE T. LARSON

the Navy on December 23, 1945 and ultimately gained his US citizenship on April 15, 1947 because of his service in World War II. As a United States citizen, Olle was able to participate in the electoral process in 1948, which began a life long dedication to voting Democrat because of growing up during the era of FDR’s New Deal.

Olle purchased his first Farmall M tractor in 1947, which began his life long passion and career in farming that lasted over fifty years.

Always a man with industry in his heart, Olle worked at G.E. in DeKalb from 1959 to 1962, and then Anaconda Wire and Cable from 1962 until the plant closed in 1983. As a man of industry, Olle worked in a variety of positions including inspection, foreman, and maintenance. As a member of IBEW 1543, Olle also served as a union rep for many years. Olle was also a dedicated member of his community. From 1965-71, Olle served on the Hiawatha Community Unit 426 School Board and was often know as the community mechanic, as many people came to him to have various things fixed over the years.

At the same time, Olle was a devout Christian confirmed as a Lutheran, active as a Methodist and completing his church life as a member Covent. He walked with his Lord daily. He was a long standing member first at Kirkland United Methodist Church and then later at Hillcrest Covenant Church in DeKalb. Dedicated to his church families, Olle served on a number of church committees and boards and as a Sunday School teacher for his congregations.

In 1969, Olle’s beloved wife Jeanette died after a battle with cancer. In 1972, Olle was able to return to Sweden and spent three weeks there

The Nobel Peace Prize and its momentum Unlike almost any previous award, the Nobel Peace Prize in 2016 can be an ongoing, and not just reflective, part of a peace process.

That is if Colombians seize the global momentum created by the awarding of the prize to President Juan Manuel Santos.

New momentum is indeed needed after the surprise rejection Oct. 2 of a referendum on a peace pact between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia. Colombians, having endured 52 years of war, undoubtedly want peace.

But a narrow majority of voters in a low-turnout plebiscite apparently believed the deal was too lenient on FARC fighters, some of whom are accused of decades of kidnapping, extortion, bombings, forced recruitment, drug trafficking and other crimes.

Despite the vote, both FARC and the government have pledged to abide by the current cease-fire agreement.

And Santos plans to push for an eventual agreement that FARC – and just as important, Colombians – will accept.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognized that the prize could help push all Colombians to complete the arduous peace process. “The committee hopes that the peace prize will give him [Santos] strength to succeed in his demanding task,” said Kaci Kullman Five, the chairwoman of the committee said.

Whether the unique nature of this year’s laureate presages a longer-term shift remains to be seen. “Most of the time the Peace Prize is awarded for accomplishments that have already been achieved,” Joseph Underhill, an Augsburg College professor who is program director of the Nobel Peace Prize Forum, told an editorial writer. “As a means to an end that everyone recognizes is widely sought in that country, this is something that can contribute to that process. It by no means should be taken as a refutation of the will of the people, but hopefully a tool to move to a solution that everyone wants under terms that are acceptable to a majority of Colombians.”

That majority deserves a just, permanent end to a war that has killed more than 200,000 and displaced millions more.

The new Nobel laureate should use the award’s stature to renegotiate an end to the conflict that can respond to understandable objections from some Colombians.

VIEWS Cynthia Tucker increasingly likely. Of course, that’s of a piece with the havoc he already has created, the competing, dissonant forces of nihilism and fascism that he already has unleashed.

So if you have gained some comfort from Trump’s recent dramatic drop in the polls, don’t get too complacent. Even in defeat, he will continue to influence the fate of the republic. Trumpism, I’m afraid, will be with us for some time to come. The real estate mogul and reality TV star rose to the top of the Republican heap by appealing to the basest instincts of a significant number of GOP voters – Americans who tend toward xenophobia and racial prejudice, who are most secure within a white patriarchy, who are vulnerable to the weirdest conspiracy theories if those theories confirm their world view, who are inclined toward authoritarianism (as long as the authoritarian shares their identity politics).

He has primed those voters to believe that our democratic institutions no longer work; he has encouraged them to be suspicious of people of color; he has suggested that they respond with violence to any electoral setback.

Americans tend to take one of the best features of our democracy for granted – that the losers accept their defeat, that they affirm the legitimacy of the process. Trump has no respect for that basic tradition.

But that’s just one way in which he has normalized behavior that, just a short year ago, was completely out of bounds for an American presidential candidate. The civic fabric has been stretched and grossly contorted by the behavior of a man who has no more use for our democratic values than Vladimir Putin, whom Trump admires.

During the last debate, Trump threatened to imprison his rival, Hillary Clinton, if he were elected. Allow me to repeat that because it is simply astounding: In a nation founded on the rule of law, he has threatened to jail a rival who has not been convicted of any crime (or even prosecuted for one).

That happens in Putin’s Russia. That happens in banana republics, in Third

World dictatorships.

Never mind that his supporters claim to revere the U.S. Constitution.

They chant “Lock her up!” at his rallies.

But that sickening disrespect for democratic conventions draws little comment or scrutiny as reporters race to cover the next outrage, the next assault, the next low in a campaign that has rolled around in the sewers for months now.

At least Trump’s outsized misogyny finally has drawn the attention that it deserves. With the release of an audiotape in which he brags about sexually assaulting women, other victims of his lechery have come forward to tell their sad tales.

His poll numbers are plummeting, his unfavorable ratings among women soaring. Still, considerable damage already has been done.

Trump and his followers have set fire to the public commons and dumped jet fuel on it. The resulting conflagration will not be easy to contain.

Bob Dylan has surpassed Walt Whitman as the American poet Bob Dylan has surpassed Walt Whitman as the defining American artist, celebrating the capacity for self-invention as the highest form of freedom.

“He not busy being born is busy dying,” Dylan sang in “It’s All Right, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding).” Reinventer of folk music, voice of the 1960s, blues singer, rock star, born-again Christian, champion of gospel, country singer, old-style crooner and now winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, Dylan has found a million different ways to say the same thing. (He was born Robert Allen Zimmerman, and he sang, “You may call me Zimmy.”)

I have been to just one Bob Dylan concert, about a decade ago. He concluded with his 1965 masterpiece, “Like A Rolling Stone,” whose brutal lyrics seem to exult in the suffering of someone brought low. The song starts with a sneer: “Once upon a time you dressed so fine/You threw the bums a dime in your prime/didn’t you?” The first stanza ends: “Now you don’t talk so loud/Now you don’t seem so proud/About having to be scrounging for your next meal.”

Dylan said in an interview that the song originated in a “long piece of vomit,” beginning with “steady hatred directed at some place that was honest” and ending with a kind of revenge, captured in the famous chorus: “How does it feel/

To be on your own/With no direction home/Like a complete unknown/Like a rolling stone?”

In concert, however, the song was turned upside down. As people sang the chorus along with Dylan, they were exhilarated, jubilant, exultant. Far from laid low, they were unchained. As Dylan sang it, “Like A Rolling Stone” had become a declaration of independence.

Of course, that declaration was there all along. Even in 1965, the chorus was a cry of defiance. “When you ain’t got nothing, you got nothing to lose” – and that’s not all bad.

If “Like A Rolling Stone” is Dylan’s “Hamlet,” “Desolation Row” is his “King Lear.” It’s a fever dream, or a love letter, about an unruly procession of humanity – Cinderella, Ophelia, Einstein, the good Samaritan, the tightrope walker, a jealous monk, the blind commissioner, insurance men, Dr. Filth and his nurse (who “keeps the cards that read ‘Have Mercy on His Soul’ ”).

But in the last stanza, there’s a radical change; the dream is over. Dylan shifts from the procession to the mundane: “Yes, I received your letter yesterday/ About the time the door knob broke/ When you asked me how I was doing/Or was that some kind of joke?” He seems to be describing a note from a family member, perhaps his mother – mundane,

chatty. He concludes: “All these people that you mention “Yes, I know them, they’re quite lame “I had to rearrange their faces “And give them all another name “Right now I can’t read too good “Don’t send me no more letters no “Not unless you mail them “From Desolation Row.” That’s not exactly nice. But it captures what Dylan cherishes in Jack Kerouac, who understood freedom in much the same way, and who wrote, “The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing.”

Although cruel, Dylan is capable of great tenderness. “Lay Lady Lay,” his most celebrated romantic song, is uncharacteristically mawkish. Much better and more real, and in its own way a celebration of freedom, is “Buckets of Rain”: “I like your smile/And your fingertips/I like the way that you move your hips/I like the cool way you look at me/Everything about you is bringing me/Misery.”

Or consider the sweetness of “Forever Young,” written for his son: “May your hands always be busy/May your feet always be swift/May you have a strong foundation/When the winds of changes

shift/May your heart always be joyful/ And may your song always be sung/May you stay forever young.”

Dylan often is categorized as a folk singer, but he doesn’t like that: “Folk music is a bunch of fat people,” he said in an interview in 1966. He hates being described as the “voice of his generation.” Asked by an interviewer in 1965 how he thinks of himself, he said “as a song and dance man.” Booed in the 1960s for turning away from protest songs, he said, with sarcasm and contempt (and a kind of truth too): “All my songs are protest songs. That’s all I do is protest.”

In his sort-of autobiography, “Chronicles: Volume 1,” Dylan wrote that “songs, to me, were more important than just light entertainment”; they were a “different republic, some liberated republic.”

He didn’t plan to stir things up, but “thought of mainstream culture as lame as [heck] and a big trick. It was like the unbroken sea of frost that lay outside the window and you had to have awkward footgear to walk with.”

Donald Trump is not done.

Over the last few days, he has repeatedly impugned the integrity of our democratic processes and our civic institutions. He has warned his supporters of a “rigged system” that could “steal” the election from him.

At one campaign stop, he told his virtually all-white audience to watch “other communities” (translation: heavily black neighborhoods) to make sure they were not committing voter fraud.

“I hear these horror shows, and we have to make sure that this election is not stolen from us and is not taken away from us,” he said.

At another rally, he claimed that the FBI and the Department of Justice were in cahoots with his rival, Hillary Clinton: “The Clintons are criminals. ... And the establishment that protects them has engaged in a massive cover-up of widespread criminal activity ... to keep the Clintons in power. ... This is a conspiracy against you, the American people,” he proclaimed wildly in one of his fact-free rants.

Get your hands dirty at Glidden Homestead’s Community Dig DAILY CHRONICLE On Sunday, from noon to 4 p.m., visitors of all ages can take part in the Glidden Homestead Community Dig in DeKalb.

Eli Orrvar, a master’s candidate at Northern Illinois University and project leader of the excavation at the Joseph Glidden barn, will discuss how excavating is done and then bring attendees to dig in an active pit.

Glidden developed barbed wire in DeKalb in 1873 and went on to patent numerous other inventions.

Barbed wire production continued at the Homestead site through the winter of 1873 into the spring of 1874, when the operation moved into town.

Fun activities for kids to learn about archaeology will be included that day and visitors can tour Glidden’s home and see a working blacksmith shop.

The Glidden Homestead is located at 921 W. Lincoln Highway.

The Associated Press CHICAGO – So much for October closer. With his Dodgers desperate for a win, Clayton Kershaw delivered the most dominant start of his checkered playoff career.

The ace left-hander pitched seven sparkling innings, Adrian Gonzalez homered and Los Angeles beat the Cubs 1-0 Sunday night to tie the NL Championship Series at a game apiece.

Kershaw retired his first 14 batters and allowed just two hits in first outing since he pitched three times in the NL Division Series, including a twoout save in Game 5 on Thursday night in Washington. The three-time NL Cy Young Award winner struck out six and walked one while throwing just 84 pitches in a brisk outing that could help when he returns later in the NLCS. The Dodgers needed a clutch pitching performance after their heartbreaking 8-4 loss in the series opener.

And Kershaw responded with a postseason gem that continued his reputation repair after a handful of playoff duds over the years. He was just 3-6 with a 4.79 ERA in 16 career postseason

games coming into the series.

Kenley Jansen struck out four in two perfect innings for his third save of the playoffs.

Game 3 is Tuesday night in Los Angeles. Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta, who pitched a no-hitter at Dodger Stadium last August, faces left-hander Rich Hill, who worked a total of seven innings in two starts in the Division Series against the Nationals.

The Cubs lost a 1-0 game in the postseason for the first time since Babe Ruth and the Boston Red Sox blanked them in the 1918 World Series opener.

The Cubs, trying for their first pennant in 71 years, wasted a solid start by major league ERA leader Kyle Hendricks, who pitched 51/3 innings of three-hit ball in his first outing since he left his Division Series start against San Francisco with a bruised right forearm.

Hendricks’ only mistake was a second-inning fastball that Gonzalez drove over the wall in left-center for his second homer of the playoffs. Gonzalez also had a tying two-run single in the eighth inning of the series opener, but Miguel Montero’s pinch-hit grand slam was the big blow in a dramatic

win for the Cubs.

A day later, the Cubs couldn’t get anything going against Kershaw.

Slumping slugger Anthony Rizzo just missed a home run with a foul drive in the fourth, and then bounced out. Javier Baez and Willson Contreras hit consecutive two-out singles in the fifth for the Cubs’ first baserunners, but Jason Heyward fouled out to third.

Nothing seemed to bother Kershaw on a muggy night at Wrigley Field. After catcher Yasmani Grandal dropped a foul popup in the seventh, Kershaw responded with a wry grin, and then struck out Ben Zobrist.

With two down and a runner on first, Baez drove Kershaw’s final pitch to the warning track in center, momentarily delighting the crowd of 42,384.

But Joc Pederson was there for the catch.

Jansen backed Kershaw with flawless relief. The big right-hander struck out Dexter Fowler and Kris Bryant before Rizzo lined meekly to second for the final out.

While the Cubs struggled against Jansen and Kershaw, Hendricks and their bullpen gave them a chance. Carl Edwards Jr., Mike Montgomery, Pedro

Strop and Aroldis Chapman combined for 32/3 innings of hitless relief.

Josh Reddick got Los Angeles’ last hit of the night in the sixth, putting runners on first and second. Edwards then came in and got Pederson to hit a soft liner to second that Baez let drop before starting a heady inning-ending double play.

SLUMPING

Rizzo, one of the leading candidates for NL MVP, went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts. He is 1 for 24 with eight Ks in the playoffs. Heyward and Addison Russell each had another hitless night, continuing their struggles.

UP NEXT

The Cubs and Dodgers work out in Los Angeles on Monday, and then Arrieta and Hill return to the mound for the first time since the Division Series.

Arrieta made one start against Los Angeles this season, pitching seven scoreless innings in a no-decision on May 31 at Wrigley. Hill, a fourth-round draft pick by the Cubs in 2002, has made one appearance against his first major league team, recording two outs in relief for Boston on May 21, 2011.

Huskies defense looks strong, offense struggles

The Northern Illinois defense put together its best performance of the season in the first three quarters, but the Huskies’ recently solid offense struggled early before they lost a wild, mistake-filled 34-28 game Saturday against Central Michigan.

The Huskies are 1-9 in their past 10 games, including four straight at Huskie Stadium.

While the Huskies’ defense came into the game near the bottom of the conference in many categories, it held the Chippewas to 14 points and 246 yards through three quarters. It also had as many takeaways – three – against Central Michigan as it had in the previous six games.

Cornerbacks Shawun Lurry and safety Trequan Smith each had an interception, and defensive end Austin Smaha had a fumble recovery.

However, the Huskies offense didn’t score after those three turnovers.

“We didn’t take advantage of them,” Carey said. “That’s a fact. That has to get better. You get momentum like that, you get stops, you want to turn that into points.

At the very minimum, you want to flip the field.”

Senior defensive end Ladell Fleming had a pair of critical sacks on third downs against Central Michigan quarterback Cooper Rush.

Through regulation, Rush, who came into the game averaging 301 passing yards a game, was 17 for 32 with 204 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. However, in the overtimes, he had a pair of 25yard touchdown passes – including one to

After regulation, he was 2 for 3 with 50 yards and the two scores.

“It probably wasn’t good enough,” Carey said of defending Rush. “He threw for 250 and we sacked him a couple times, which was good. Picked him off a couple times. Overall, it wasn’t good enough, but I think it was effective at times.”

For as strong as the Huskies defense looked in regulation, the offense struggled against the Central Michigan defense.

Senior quarterback Anthony Maddie, who was averaging 135.5 rushing yards in his first two starts, never had an open lane during his rushes and finished with 28 yards on 12 carries.

“They definitely did a good job of clos-

ing up gaps,” Maddie said. “They’re very disciplined. They did what they had to do to keep us from running most of the game.

We made some adjustments and got some yards here and there, but we got to be better at running the ball.”

The Huskies finished with five threeand-outs, along with two interceptions.

Through regulation, they had 298 yards of offense – 156 rushing, 142 passing – which would have been a season-low.

Aside from Aregeros Turner’s highlight-reel 53-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter, they would have had 29 carries for only 103 yards.

“It was a big emphasis for us all week,” Central Michigan coach John Bonamego said of the Chippewas’ run defense. “We felt that first and second down were going

to be very important. If we got them into third-and-long situations, we felt like they would need to throw it and that would play into our hands.”

NIU running back Jordan Huff had 43 rushing yards on eight carries (5.4 per attempt) and senior Joel Bouagnon was bottled up for 31 yards on 10 carries. Including the three overtimes, the Chippewas (5-2 overall, 2-1 MAC West) outgained the Huskies, 484-339.

While the grip on the MAC West that the Huskies (1-6, 1-2 MAC West) had in previous seasons is clearly fading away, their streak of eight consecutive bowl appearances is also one loss away from likely coming to an end. Most teams in the conference have had trouble defeating the Huskies in years’ past, but the Chippewas have won three consecutive meetings against NIU. “I think certain teams matchup against other teams better, in terms of style of play,” said Bonamego, who took over in 2015. “We knew coming in here, this would be a physical football game. …

Every time we play NIU, it is.”

In 2014, the Chippewas ended NIU’s 28game home winning streak with a 34-17 victory. Last season, the Huskies lost three fumbles and fell, 29-19, in Mt. Pleasant.

On Saturday, the Huskies never had a lead in a crazy game that featured five turnovers, three missed field goals and is the Huskies’ second loss in triple overtime this season after opening the year with a 40-34 defeat at Wyoming.

“I wouldn’t talk about three years in a row,” Carey said of losing three straight to Central Michigan. “I’ll talk about this game being an overtime game where both teams are slugging back and forth.”

DeKalb sophomore Carpenter takes 10th at state DAILY CHRONICLE

sports@daily-chronicle.com Things just kept going wrong on the last four holes for DeKalb sophomore Emma Carpenter.

Not so wrong, however, that it kept her from finishing 10th Saturday in the Class 2A Girls Golf State Tournament at Hickory Point Golf Club in Decatur.

Carpenter bogeyed her final four holes after she was 2-under par through the first 14 of the second round. She finished the day with a 2-over 74 and the tournament with a 149, eight stokes behind champ Grace Curran of Lincoln-Way Central.

“I’m super excited to be in the top 10,

especially this was my first time down state,” Carpenter said.

Carpenter finished the highest of the four area golfers competing in state tournaments. DeKalb senior Austin Freeman took 11th with a 151 in the Class 3A boys tournament at The Den at Fox Creek in Bloomington. Kaneland teammates Jake Hed and Brett Glennon took 21st and 39th, respectively, in the 2A tournament at Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University in Bloomington.

Carpenter said that despite the bumpy finish, she learned a lot from the experience and is happy with her performance.

“I had a great time the past two days and it was really fun,” Carpenter said.

“Coach (Chuck) Schramm came down

here with me, and it was a great time.”

DeKalb coach John Cordes, in Bloomington with Freeman, said he was immensely happy with Carpenter’s showing.

“I texted her right away to tell her how happy for her and proud of her we are,” Cordes said. “She’s just a competitor and gets after it. She has a lot of belief in her ability. I think maybe it showed a little at the end when she struggled on her last three holes, but she has a ton of ability and a ton of confidence. I think this will make her that, ... much better of a player.”

Freeman carded a 75 on Day 2 to finish with a 151, one stroke behind an all-state finish and nine behind champ Brendan

O’Reilly of Hinsdale Central. It came on the heels of him missing six weeks of the season with a wrist injury.

“There were some really good scores this year, and I think he played better than his score, let’s put it that way,” Cordes said. “When he shot a 76 yesterday, he had a couple drives cost him three shots, other than that he played really solid. Today he basically did the same. ... He played really well, especially for a guy who was off with an injury for six weeks.”

Glennon fired off a 79 in his second round to finish with a 161. He shot a second-round 78 to finish with a 155, three strokes behind a medal and eight behind champion Luke Armbrust of St. Francis.

DeKalb, Sycamore play to draw to finish suspended game

sports@daily-chronicle.com In a continuation game from a game that was stopped because of lightning Oct. 4, DeKalb and Sycamore played to a 2-2 tie Saturday morning in DeKalb.

The game resumed with 20:58 left in the first half with the score tied at zero.

The final 20 minutes of play Saturday saw three goals while the first 20 saw no goals. Sycamore (13-8-3) wasted no time Saturday morning after Drew Tronc gathered his own rebound after DeKalb goalkeeper Genaro Rodriguez was unable to corral the ball after making the

first save with 17:40 left in the first half.

“I thought it was really important to take the lead because the wind is a factor today,” Sycamore coach David Bachta said. “You know in the second half you aren’t going to have the wind advantage. The wind definitely plays a role at the high school level, so we were happy to get that early lead.”

After seeing little action in first attempt of playing this game from an offensive standpoint, the teams decided to trade goals this time around. The Barbs answered the Spartans with a goal of their own after Angel Martinez scored seven minutes later to tie the score.

Four minutes later, Sycamore countered with Phillip Maillefer’s goal to regain the lead in a score that would stand going into the halftime period.

“You know, I thought we came out and we played a really good brand of soccer, especially in the first half,” DeKalb coach Brent McIntosh said. “Unfortunately, we found ourselves down, but the general message to the team is that we were pleased. We were getting dangerous offensively and a little too loose defensively, but pleased overall.”

The second half saw a decrease of excitement on the offensive end, but DeKalb (7-8-4) came away with a goal

in the last few minutes of the game to again tie the score at two goals. Martinez was credited for the Barbs’ goal after a high bounce of the ball went over the head of goalkeeper Patrick Smith.

“We knew in the second half we were going to have the wind advantage,” McIntosh said. “We knew we were going to get a lot of opportunities, but our concern was going too big because we knew Sycamore’s goalie would eat all that up. That second goal isn’t how you draw it up, but frankly, karma hasn’t gone our way against Sycamore the last few times, so we’ll take this bit of good fortune today.”

Kaneland’s Matthew Richtman won the boys race in 15:08.4, with Sycamore’s Stephen Poorten in second, finishing in 15:12.5. As a team, DeKalb was fourth and Kaneland took fifth.

On the girls side, Kaneland was second, with DeKalb seventh and the Spartans eighth. Kaneland’s Rachel Richtman was the top finishing local runner, taking third in 18:05.7.

Mitchell Bishop led the Barbs with a seventh-place finish on the boys side, clocking in at 15:54.2. He was just ahead of Sycamore teammates Connor Farrell (eighth in 15:55.4) and Jake Carani (ninth in 16:06.3). Paul Ruetten was 13th for Sycamore in 16:11.7, and DeKalb’s Thomas Wuchte was 15th in 16:13.5.

Sycamore finished with 57 points, 15 ahead of runner-up Sterling. DeKalb had 80 points, just two points behind third-place Yorkville. Kaneville had 121 to take fifth.

Kaneland finished with 60 points, well behind Yorkville’s winning total of 18. DeKalb lost the tiebreaker for sixth with Geneseo.

Rachel Richtman was the only runner not from Yorkville in the top six.

DeKalb’s Christina Ryzhov was eighth in 19:19.3, a spot ahead of Kaneland’s Andrea Wells (19:30). Hanna Kirby was the top Spartan, taking 21st in 20:22.

G-K girls seventh at BNC meet: The Genoa-Kingston girls took fifth with 117 points while the boys were seventh with 198 at the Big Northern Conference Cross Country Championships at Walcamp.

“This week we had three meets, so the girls have been very tired from all of the traveling and high-quality swimming in meets,” coach coach Melanie Chambers said. “Many of the girls did not swim their best times today, but we are extremely proud of them for going out and putting up a good fight and doing their best, even when they were all so exhausted and feeling so crappy in the water. The girls pulled together and had some great relay swims today.”

Downward spiral continues

Bears are among NFL’s worst teams with 1-5 record

The Bears and the Jacksonville Jaguars are two of the worst teams in the NFL, and on Sunday the Bears were even worse than the Jaguars in a 17-16 loss, their fifth in six games this season.

Consider these notes from the Bears loss to BEARS the Jaguars: • The Bears INSIDER converted 7 Hub of 17 thirdArkush down attempts (41 percent), setting season-highs in third-down conversions and conversion percentage. But they were 7 of 10 in the first half and then 0 for 7 in the second half, when they blew 13-0 and 16-7 leads.

• Brian Hoyer completed 30-of-49 passes for 302 yards and now has completed 130-of-189 passes for 1,396 yards, six touchdowns and zero interceptions in five games in 2016.

• The Bears are 1-4 in the games Hoyer has played.

• Only the Cleveland Browns have a worse record than the Bears with the season now a little past a third over, and only the Panthers, Jets and 49ers are as bad.

With the Panthers and the Jets clearly being more talented clubs than the Bears, things will be very bleak around Halas Hall in the coming days of the short week before the Bears take on the Packers on Thursday night in Green Bay, and what was supposed to be a rebuilding year is teetering on the brink of being a lost season.

In the locker room after their fifth loss, the Bears were confused and grasping at straws.

Offensive guard Kyle Long is part of the foundation for the rebuilding plan, but when asked if injuries are the problem right now, he said, “I don’t know what it is, but I know that there are spurts where we play well enough to win, and there are spurts where it looks like we don’t know what the [heck] we’re doing.”

Inside linebacker Danny Trevathan is viewed by most as one of the most important free-agent acquisitions of the Ryan Pace, John Fox rebuilding regime, but when asked how the Jaguars game got away, he replied, “I have no idea. I have to look at the film, but I know that a couple of plays got

Cameron Meredith is one, but like most of his teammates, he’s searching for answers.

“It’s definitely getting frustrating when you get down to the red zone and we’re not able to get in there,” he said. “We need to turn those field goals into touchdowns. You got to go back to work and figure out a better game plan or something, so we can be better next week.”

That is a second-year undrafted player coming off his first NFL start uncertain whether or not his club’s game plan is the problem.

Fox continues to sell that things aren’t as bad as they look and will be better soon.

“Everybody in there, coaches are giving their all, players are giving their all, we just got to play better to win games.”

I don’t think anybody doubts their effort.

The fair question after their ugly loss to the Jaguars is, are these coaches and players really good enough to get any better than they are right now?

Carter-Williams hopes Bulls are the right landing spot

So how does he fit with the Bulls?

Well, it’s not his outside shooting, as the 6-foot-6 guard is only a career 25.5 percent shooter from beyond the 3-point line.

What he will give Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg off the bench is on-the-ball defense, as well as a point guard who can play with pace. It also ends the competition that was going on for that backup point guard spot, as Spencer Dinwiddie, Jerian Grant and Denzel Valentine all were getting Tony Snell looks there throughout training camp.

The good news for the Bulls, and more specifically Carter-Williams, is that he no longer will have the spotlight on him to reach a ceiling that so far has been unobtainable. He never has had a strong veteran point guard to learn from, and that could soon be changing.

Since signing 30-year-old Rajon Rondo this offseason, Rondo has made it a point to be a mentor for the younger players, even travelling to

Las Vegas for Summer League to sit on the bench during games and play tutor.

So although Rondo’s reputation in places such as Dallas and Sacramento took a hit, Hoiberg hasn’t seen any of the baggage that supposedly traveled closely with the point guard.

“He’s bought in to what we’re trying to do,” Hoiberg said of Rondo “He wanted to come in and watch film, we worked a lot with his shot early in the process and he was around our guys, and from the very first moment you could tell guys were going to gravitate toward him because of his voice, veteran presence. Like all players, you learn a lot from the different situations you have been through. I’m sure that’s the case with Rajon.

“That’s how I’m judging it and how I’m going to base it, how our relationship is. I took some transfer kids when I was [coaching Iowa State] who didn’t have the best reputations, and the minute you stepped onto the campus you talked about how it was going to be, how important it is to develop a relationship with them. That’s how I’ve always approached it.”

Hossa, Toews hoping to score early, often

Slow starts were a ‘burden’ last year for Hawks stars

mlazerus@suntimes.com CHICAGO – For a brief moment Saturday night, it appeared the clouds had parted, the sun was shining, a choir was singing, and Marian Hossa finally had scored the 500th goal of his NHL career.

He hadn’t.

“I wasn’t sure,” Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. “[Richard Panik] had the bigger celebration.”

Indeed, Hossa merely had set up the second of Panik’s three goals Saturday with a short, cross-crease feed through traffic. Hossa, in fact, has an assist in all three of the Hawks’ games so far. Despite moving from the top line to the third line to the fourth line in a matter of four days, Hossa has remained a strong presence at both ends

of the ice. But he still is looking to cash in on a goal. So is his off-and-on linemate, Jonathan Toews.

And the sooner, the better.

Last season, slow starts led to Hossa having a career-low 13 goals and Toews having the lowest points-pergame total (58 points in 80 games) of his career.

Toews didn’t score a goal in his first seven games last season, and Hossa had only one in his first 14 games. So the two superstars – Marian Hossa with a gaudy 750 goals between them – are eager to find some early momentum.

“It’ll be huge for us,” Toews said.

“We know those results are going to come. Last year, it was maybe a rougher start, and then we were kind of forcing as the season went along. It got maybe even more mentally tiring as that burden got bigger and bigger. [So] the start’s important.”

For Hossa, who has been getting asked about his 500th goal since last year’s training camp, when it seemed inevitable he’d get it during the 2015-

16 season, one simple tally would do a world of good.

“It’s always easier when you have a good start,” he said. “Things are going your way, you’re more confident, things are easier, and you’re having more fun.

(When you’re) really trying to work hard and things are not going your way, you have to chase things.”

Hossa has been somewhat snake-bitten in his quest for 500. His shooting percentage has dropped dramatically Jonathan from 12.4 in 2013-14 to Toews only 6.8 last season. And after goals in back-to-back games in early February put him at 497 for his career, ramping up the 500th hype, Hossa was injured on a hip check by Anaheim’s Hampus Lindholm and missed a month.

He scored No. 499 on March 29, but then was injured again April 3 against Boston, leaving him stuck one goal shy of the milestone as he sat out the last three games of the regular season. He did close out strong, scoring in each of the last three playoff games against St. Louis.

“I never thought I could be one day close to this number,” the 37-year-old Hossa said. “It’s great. I know I’m pretty close to 500, so that would be nice to get it over with sooner than later.”

It’s been a curious start for the Hawks, offensively. Through three games, their only goal-scorers are Panik (four), Brent Seabrook, Niklas Hjalmarsson, Marcus Kruger, Ryan Hartman and Nick Schmaltz. None from Toews, none from Hossa, none from Patrick Kane, none from Artemi Panarin, and none from Artem Anisimov, who has struggled mightily in the early going.

The concern entering the season was whether the Hawks would be able to muster any depth scoring. So the upside-down start could be construed as a positive – assuming the big guns start scoring soon.

“It just shows the depth of this team,” Schmaltz said. “I mean, obviously, Kane and Panarin and those guys, they’re going to score. You give them time, they’re going to make plays.

They’re some of the best players in the league, so as much as we can do to contribute and get some secondary scoring, that will help this team be successful.”

CHICAGO – The Bulls never wanted Tony Snell.

Well, at least their former coach didn’t, as the 2013 NBA Draft was just another sign of the disconnect that was taking place between Tom Thibodeau and the front office.

After giving Thibodeau the disaster that was Marquis Teague in the 2012 draft, the follow-up to the point guard out of Kentucky was Snell with the 20th pick overall. Thibodeau wanted to go defense and glass protector, looking at Gorgui Dieng out of Louisville, who coincidentally went with the very next selection.

And although Snell had more staying power than Teague did, as Saturday night’s trade with Milwaukee

showed there’s suddenly been more misses than hits with personnel decisions.

A source confirmed that Snell would be wearing a Milwaukee Bucks uniform by Monday, while the Bulls would be getting former first-round pick – 11th overall – Michael Carter-Williams, who also was a product of the ’13 draft class.

Basically, one team’s bad decision for another’s.

From the Bucks’ standpoint, they re- Michael ally were left with no Carter-Williams choice. The injury to Khris Middleton (torn hamstring) just before camp started was a huge blow to their perimeter game, so they needed a shooter with some length. Snell is only a career 35 percent shooter from long range, but impressed Milwaukee last season by averaging 12.5 points against them in two meetings.

As far as Carter-Williams, his career steadily has declined, going from the NBA Rookie of the Year in Philadelphia to a bench player in Milwaukee.

Volunteering helps you, others Dear Dr. K: I have a particular disease. A nearby medical school is recruiting people with my condition to participate in a research study. Should I volunteer?

Dear Reader: There are two good reasons to consider volunteering for a study: It might help you, and it might help others.

In some types of studies, there also may be risks to you.

Sometimes my patients ask me: “Do we really need to do all these medical research studies? Don’t we know what treatments work without conducting and paying for all these studies – often with taxpayer dollars?”

That’s an easy question to answer. The history of medicine is, unfortunately, filled with examples of new treatments doctors thought should work. Indeed, most doctors predicted they would work. But when the treatments were tested, they didn’t work.

Indeed, sometimes they made people worse.

And sometimes such treatments were given to many patients before a study was done to show that they were of no value, or even harmful.

Here are some things to consider as you decide whether to participate.

Every study for which you might volunteer has been carefully designed.

There is a detailed written plan specifying every question you might be asked, the kind of physical examinations that might be performed, the tests that might be ordered and any treatments you might receive.

This plan must be approved by a committee called an Institutional Review Board (IRB). The IRB includes doctors, nurses, researchers and members of the community – none of whom is involved with the study.

They determine whether the study has acceptably low risks for the participants.

There are different types of studies. Ob-

They do not put you at risk. Studies like this discovered people who smoked had a much higher risk of lung cancer.

Other studies, called clinical trials, require you to have a particular “intervention.” The intervention might be a diagnostic test, such as a colonoscopy. Or it might be a treatment – a medicine, a surgical procedure or another therapy.

By participating in a clinical trial, you may get access to a beneficial drug or procedure that is not yet on the market. On the other hand, there may be risks involved.

One reason clinical trials are done is to determine the effectiveness of a drug and any side effects it may cause. Some clinical trials also test whether the study’s treatment is better than no treatment at all. So, if you enroll in certain types of studies, you run the risk of being assigned to a placebo (sham) treatment.

Being in a study won’t change your regular medical care. You’ll still see your usual doctor. And typically, the study (and its treatments) cost you nothing.

Many of my patients have volunteered to participate in medical studies. None I know of have experienced a complication, but it can happen. Some of them have benefited: Their condition improved because of the experimental treatment used in the study.

My 72-year-old husband believes not voting in the upcoming presidential election is making a statement because he can’t tolerate any of the candidates. He believes not voting is telling the political parties to offer more acceptable candidates.
