Cubs fans should expect victory, reminders of defeat I’ve been a Cubs fan since the summer of 1984, when I visited Wrigley Field for the first time with my father. We were two of the 2 million fans who came to the ballpark that year, people the Cubs called “the 10th man.”

Someone hit a big home run that afternoon, and my dad hoisted me onto his shoulders so I could see over the crowd. I remember worrying I might fall down to the street below, but not caring too much because the place was alive of thousands of grown-up voices, all screaming for the players on the field in the blue pinstripes.

A couple of months later, I remember sitting on the shag-carpeted living room floor in front of the TV, hoping Cubs catcher Jody Davis would somehow get a hit, willing it to happen with all the psychic energy a 6-yearold boy could muster.

But Davis grounded out. The San Diego Padres won the game, 6-3, and the best-offive series, 3-2. My sports heroes – players including Ron “The Penguin” Cey, Keith Moreland, Bob Dernier, Leon “Bull” Durham, Lee Smith, the 1984 Cy Young winner Rick Sutcliffe and, of course, the 1984 NL MVP, Ryne Sandberg – had won the first two games of the series but still missed their chance at the World Series.

It was a fitting initiation: excitement and joy followed by a shocking collapse.

Now, 32 years later, here we are again: The Cubs will play Game 1 of the National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight, and I feel as if I understand the concept of “trigger warnings.”

The media coverage of this series is going to walk us through all the Cubs defeats of the past, as if we’re in some kind of Dickensian nightmare, with George Will, Jeff Garlin or Cubs from ’69, ’84 or ’03 as our guides. Relatively new to the misery canon is Eddie Vedder’s song “Someday We’ll Go

I know there are certain people who will enjoy this (cough, Cardinals and White Sox fans), but I’m tired of this unpleasant memory lane. I’m sick of hearing the patronizing commentary about what solid people Cubs fans are because of all the disappointment they’ve endured.

As though they had a choice? These people are scarred.

But the only way it ever will stop is if the Cubs win. Or at least win the pennant. Yes, let’s start there.

This is the team that can do it. They won 103 regular-season games. They’ve staged amazing late-game comebacks, and won with stellar pitching and remarkable defense.

I like them to beat the Dodgers in six games. Unfortunately, that would bring about repeated references to Game 6 in 2003, that bleak night. What happened to Steve Bartman was a travesty, and If I have to hear someone say “five outs away” one more time ... .

If there’s any upside, maybe these constant reminders of failures past can help you steel yourself if we wind up crestfallen once again.

I haven’t cried after a Cubs loss since that afternoon in 1984. It’s undignified.

If they win it all – well, then you can cry all you want.

Sycamore girl collects Halloween costumes for charity

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – There’s bound to be a few more witches and princesses, lions, superheroes and more knocking on doors looking for treats this Halloween, after a Sycamore student has made sure that kiddos have costumes.

Susana Martin continued a tradition this year that she started about three years ago. The 12-year-old Sycamore Middle School seventh-grader collected scores of Halloween costumes that she has donated to area nonprofit organizations.

“There are lot charities about Christmas and holidays like that,” Martin said. “But there weren’t really any charities for Halloween, and I think there should be.”

So after reading in a magazine about another tween who held a similar drive where she lived, Martin decided she would do it here. Over the past few weeks, she had bins set up at places such as the Kishwaukee YMCA and DeKalb and Sycamore libraries where people could drop off donations of Halloween costumes.

“I like giving things to people who don’t have them. I just think it’s good to help people,” she said.

Some of the ones given to Martin’s Halloween Costume Club, as she has named it, were new and still in the package. Others were gently used, and her mom helped her to sort, clean and put them on hangers. While the idea for the club is the youngster’s own, she acknowledges that Mom helps to do a lot of the legwork.

Over the three years she has had her costume club, Martin and her mother, Jeanette, report giving away about 800 character ensembles. This year, about 160 were given away, they said. Distribution was divided among Salem Lutheran Church’s food pantry in Sycamore and Safe Passage domestic violence shelter and Barb Food Mart – both in DeKalb.

“I’m amazed at how kind people are,” Jeanette Martin said.

But she also is proud of what her daughter is doing.

“I am very proud of her. I like that she took ownership,” Jeanette said. “I hope that some of this will stay with her as she grows up, to remember to think of other people first.”

friends, Jeanette said. Although Susana sets the collection bins out in late September, her mom said, people have started to think of the Halloween Costume Club when they do spring

cleaning earlier in the year or know before the official collection time that they have costumes to give.

The mother-daughter team made the last drop-off of costumes Thursday with

the delivery to Barb Food Mart.

Becky Mascal was amazed at the heap of race car driver, clown, popular blue train engine, crayon and other character costumes that Susana pulled from the family van. Mascal, a Barb Food Mart board member, praised her for being a youth looking out for other young people.

Barb Food Mart runs a pantry that families of kids who attend school in DeKalb School District 428 are able to access. She said volunteers at the pantry will lay out the costumes, likely sometime next week, and parents will be able to select one for their children.

“I think it’s just so amazing to have anybody donating, but especially when kids are getting started so young and finding out how much people can use the stuff, and how much good they can do,” said Mascal, who also a sixthgrade teacher at Huntley Middle School.

“Hopefully, maybe some other kids will see it” and pick up on such ideas.

Why are you the best candidate for this office?

I want to represent the people of DeKalb County Board District 4, our interests, our concerns and listen. It is in our interest to have a balanced budget, but raising taxes to accomplish this is not in our best interest. I am pro-business, particularly entrepreneurship. Let’s look at how to raise revenue in our county to balance our budget. I understand we need to pay for services important to our citizens at risk, increasing services for mental health are needed, and the state budget crisis has created local crises for local nonprofits, health services and schools. I want to work with our County Board to come up with solutions to bring our county forward.

Having been born and raised in Sycamore, I care about this community. I feel I’ve been blessed and want to give back to Sycamore and to DeKalb County as a member of the County Board. I would use my years of experience as a mother of seven children and as a classroom assistant in the DeKalb and Sycamore school districts to be an effective representative ready to listen to the voters of County Board District 4.

What recent County Board decision do you disagree with the most and why?

This was a decision I both agree and disagree with because I see both points, and I will explain why. The issue has to do with the DeKalb County Health Department Property Tax Levy Referendum, which would keep $650,000 in place for the health department. A property tax levy for 20 years had just ended to pay off the bonds for the DeKalb County Rehab and Public Health Department. For the taxpayer, this levy equated to $22.88 for a $200,000 home, or about 4 cents per $100 of equalized assessed value. This would have come up on the November ballot; however, the County Board sent this back to committee, and this will not go before voters until later for more analysis. I appreciate further analysis for all figures to match. However, the November election is expected to have a higher turnout, and this should have the highest participation of decision for voting. Postponing this until spring places this to an election period voters may not turn out in the high numbers, yet this is a referendum concerning a property tax levy.

The decision I most disagree with is the last County Board redistricting, passed on a straight party-line vote. It was an intentional effort to reduce the influence of Cortland residents unhappy with the County Board’s decision on the landfill expansion. Voters should pick their representatives, not the other way around. That is why I am especially proud of the November 2014 ordinance the County Board passed requiring nonpartisan redistricting.

Due in large part to the state budget crisis, many of DeKalb County’s human service providers are struggling. What can the County Board do to help them continue to provide services to the county’s most at-risk residents?

With the state budget crisis in its second year, this is continuing to place a burden on DeKalb County’s nonprofits and our human services, creating cuts and placing services at risk. Last year, the County Board proposed a resolution urging Illinois state leaders to release non-General Fund Revenues payable to local services, the university, Kishwaukee College and governments.

Certainly, with the budget crisis, a resolution needs to be sent again. However, with the budget crisis in Year 2, at-risk citizens of our county are still in need of resources, but a united resolution sent by our County Board to Springfield sends a message. Next spring, voters will vote on a property tax referendum for our health department. I understand this will take a public relations sell, but I realize if sold well, passing a referendum like this is possible. As members of the County Board, we should be supportive community leaders to our nonprofits. I noted many of our County Board members attended the DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership Economic Crisis meeting Nov. 5, 2015, when the state budget crisis and budget shortfalls were discussed. At the Nov. 10, 2015, County Board executive committee meeting, the resolution to urge our Illinois state leaders to the release non-general funds was proposed. When we communicate and listen, this gives us a better path on what potential courses of action we could take.

The County Board is helping our human service providers by working with United Way to launch a “211 service” by next March. “211” would reduce duplication and increase efficiency in delivery of services by providing a “one-stop shop” for people in need. Another way the County Board is helping human service providers is though the senior levy, a long-established tax that provides necessary support for services to our county’s senior citizens. Most recently, the Health and Human Services Committee has been asking the service providers who are 501(c)3 nonprofit agencies to begin or expand existing fundraising activities to help meet shortfalls due to the state budget crisis.

How can the County Board help to improve the business climate locally and promote job growth?

I really like the entrepreneurship incubator idea, but I really like small business. The success and growth of small businesses in our community is also the growth of jobs and revenue. The DeKalb County Economic Development Corp., led by Paul Borek, does a wonderful job in DeKalb County attracting business and industry. The continued partnership between our county and the DCEDC, along with our communities, will provide a positive climate for continued growth.

By using the great resources available in our county, like NIU, to create programs such as the recently inaugurated business incubator. As this program grows, more students may be encouraged to stay in the county and start businesses. The atmosphere of the incubator could also benefit other local entrepreneurs. Taking advantage of our rich natural resources, the County Board Planning and Zoning Committee has also recently revised codes to treat agribusiness the same as agriculture, providing opportunities for all sorts of agribusiness expansion, such as Whiskey Acres on Keslinger Road.

The latest county budget proposal calls for balancing the budget while sacrificing some county jobs. What should the county’s priorities be when budgeting?

First, we must not use the reserves, since essentially this is not a balanced budget when taking out of the reserves. The county needs to look at the budget as a whole and at every entity to determine if everything that can be cut has been cut. It is difficult to lay off people. If jobs are leaving due to retirement and attrition, who will be picking up the duties since these jobs will not be filled? We must not raise taxes to balance a budget. DeKalb County’s property taxes are high enough. Until we find revenue sources, such as growth of business, this means painful cuts.

I did take the time to look over the 2017 Budget Narrative. I truly hope this year will be the end of painful cuts of sacrificing jobs, but we can no longer continue with an unbalanced budget.

In most instances, people are not excited to go to court. I would move cases along in a timely manner and ensure that the law is being correctly and fairly applied. I would also keep an open mind and remain unbiased.

Sycamore City Council considers city clerk salary increase

The recommended increases are aligned with annual cost-of-living adjustments scheduled for other full-time employees through fiscal 2020, according to the proposed ordinance.

The city clerk’s salary was last adjusted in 2008, with yearly adjustments ending in 2011.

City Manager Brian Gregory said the council reviewed salaries for full-time

elected positions in September.

“There is a state law that says salaries for elected officials have to be set 180 days before the person taking office, so we have this discussion every four years,” he said.

City Clerk Candy Smith has been in her position since 2001, and the next official term starts May 1, 2017, Gregory said.

The ordinance also suggests maintaining salaries for council members at

$4,800 a year, and mayor at $20,000 a year plus $5,000 a year for liquor commissioner.

The city clerk is an elected position in Sycamore responsible for keeping city records, including City Council minutes, ordinances, resolutions, agreements, contracts, leases, bonds, easements, permits, petitions and oaths of elected and appointed officials, according to the city website.

They both enjoyed golf and were members at Oakwood Country Club in Moline and Short Hills Country Club in East Moline. When they retired to Rogers, Arkansas in 1976, they continued to enjoy their golfing activities and were both active in their church, Holy Trinity Lutheran in Rogers. Paul died in 1991, and several years later Ronnie married Clint Willis. DeKalb clerk gets hefty pay raise Aldermen’s pay remains same

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Aldermen couldn’t agree to give themselves a raise, but they did approve a hefty hike in the city clerk’s pay.

First Ward Alderman Dave Jacobson wanted to add a $20 per diem to aldermen’s $5,400 annual pay. The additional money would compensate the ward leaders for also serving as City Council liaisons on city commissions.

He couldn’t get support for his proposal, and his motion on the issue failed.

But then 4th Ward Alderman Bob Snow came up with the idea to compensate for the additional time on

commissions with a cost-of-living type of increase. He made a motion to adjust aldermen’s salary from $5,400 to $6,000.

“That would include all compensation for any committees that somebody’s appointed to,” Snow said. “I think it would keep up with inflationary times. It’s a small increase.”

But on a 3-2 vote, with the majority of aldermen against it, that proposal failed, too.

State law requires that any changes in pay for elected offices be done at least six months before an election.

The offices of mayor, city clerk and aldermen in the 2nd, 4th and 6th wards would be on the April 2017 municipal election ballot, as is an unexpired two-year term in the 7th Ward.

“The statutory prohibitions are intended to prevent there from being changes in compensation during a term of office,” said Dean Frieders, the city attorney.

Since aldermen didn’t approve motions to change the pay, it will remain the same for aldermen in the 2nd, 4th and 6th wards until consideration is made again before the 2021 election.

The issue of aldermen’s pay will come up again in two years when the odd-numbered wards are on the 2019 ballot.

There was little discussion at Monday’s City Council meeting of changing the pay for the mayor. In fact, the role likely will continue to pay $22,500 a year for the part-time position. But a lengthy discussion of the city clerk’s duties ended in a more than 60 percent raise for that office.

Ward 2 Alderman Bill Finucane initially wanted to raise the clerk’s pay to $10,800.

“I think it would be appropriate for us to go ahead and raise the salary base for the city clerk,” Finucane said. “At this point, it appears it will remain as a part-time city clerk posi-

tion, and I’d like … it to be at double the rate of an alderperson.”

That was no-go on a 3-2 vote, with only Finucane and 5th Ward Alderwoman Kate Noreiko in favor.

The city clerk’s role was changed as of 2013 when the office was reduced to a part-time position, and many of the duties of the office were reassigned to city staff.

Additionally, the pay was reduced to $5,000 a year.

But in recent weeks, current City Clerk Jennifer Jeep Johnson has advocated for changes to the office, including asking that some of the duties be redirected back to the city clerk.

Snow made a motion to set the clerk’s pay at $8,000. That was approved on a 6-0 vote, which included Mayor John Rey’s nod. Two aldermen were absent.

The issue is scheduled to come back before the City Council for final consideration Oct. 24.

SYCAMORE – John Limberis said he wants a job where he can work with his hands, and the tour he took Friday with other area high school students helped him explore possibilities for engineering careers.

“I just like to make stuff,” the Sycamore High School junior said. “Building things, inventing new things – it’s really interesting, like how some of the engineers were designing the new equipment.”

The DeKalb Ogle Workforce Development Consortium took about 116 students from Sycamore, DeKalb, Genoa-Kingston and Rochelle Township high schools to visit engineering and manufacturing companies in DeKalb County.

Limberis’ school toured both the old and new Sycamore facilities for Ideal Industries, where he saw machines forming bits of plastic and metal into pieces for electrical equipment.

“I didn’t know that Ideal made equipment for electricians,” he said.

“That was pretty cool to see.”

Gene Fogle, industrial workforce coordinator, said attendance has fluctuated in the four years the consortium

attuned to the industry and what the possibilities are,” Fogle said. “When we first started this program, they had no idea what opportunities were available in the DeKalb and Rochelle areas, and now they look forward to these events.”

Paul Cummings, a manufacturing engineer at Ideal Industries, said he recalls needing more direction in high school on what career path to take, so he tried inform students in his tour group of the various jobs at his company.

“Here we have engineers. We have tool and die makers. We have maintenance crews. We have operators,” he said. “We have it all here, so they kind of get to see a little bit of everything.”

Cummings said he first wanted to be a car mechanic, and after finding out mechanical engineering wasn’t for him, he got into his current field as a manufacturing engineer. He said he wants students to know it is OK if they end up changing careers.

“I just think that whatever career path that they want to go down, as long as it’s something that they enjoy and are passionate about and they can learn more about it, that’s the career path they should take,” Cummings said.

Sycamore man faces drug charges after undercover police operation

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A 21-year-old Sycamore man faces felony drug charges for attempting to sell prescription pills to an undercover police officer.

Alejandro Soto, 21, of the 300 block of Heron Creek Drive, Sycamore, was charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, possession of a look-alike substance with intent to deliver and driving with a suspended license, according to court records.

Soto was arrested Tuesday after police found cocaine, prescription drugs, marijuana and powder used

to cut cocaine in Soto’s car, court records show.

Possession of cocaine with intent to deliver is a Class 1 felony typically punishable by Alejandro four to 15 years in prisSoto on.

DeKalb police learned that Soto was selling the generic version of Xanax, alprazolam, and marijuana. They also found out that he had a suspended license, according to a police synopsis contained in court records.

An undercover officer arranged to buy alprazolam from Soto at the CVS in DeKalb. When Soto arrived in the drugstore parking lot, officers made

contact with him. He said he had marijuana in his car.

During a search of his vehicle, police found 10 suspected alprazolam pills, three bags of cocaine weighing more than a gram and more than 10 grams of marijuana. They also found clear plastic bags of different sizes, two digital scales and 29.67 grams of a white powdery substance used to add weight to bags of cocaine, records show.

After being read his rights, Soto told police that he sells cocaine, marijuana and alprazolam, according to court documents.

Soto remained at the DeKalb County Jail as of Friday afternoon in lieu of $50,000 bond.

He is next due in court Nov. 4.

DeKALB – It started with a man’s report that three people had stolen $2,800 in cash from him. After a 7½-hour search for the money, police found it in one of the suspects’ underwear, and all four of them were arrested.

Three of the men face felony charges after allegedly trying to steal the cash from a DeKalb man. Police also arrested the victim for allegedly being in possession of a handgun with the serial number filed Courtland C. off.

Alexander, 21, of the 500 block of West 115th Street, Chicago, Darius M. were charged with theft Juzang from a person, a Class 2 felony typically punishable by three to seven years in prison. Byrd also was charged with theft of more than $500.

Police arrested the three men Oct. 7 after Chester L. the DeKalb man reported Alexander that he had been robbed of $2,800.

Michael Anderson, 21, of the 900 block of Ridge Drive, DeKalb, reported the robbery to police that afternoon, authorities said. He told police that a man stole about $2,800 from him before driving off, records show. Police located the vehicle and three suspects – Byrd,

Juzang and Alexander. Two of the three men told investigators that they drove to DeKalb with the intention of robbing Anderson, police records show.

Police obtained a search warrant for the apartment and found a loaded Bersa .380 semi-automatic handgun, they said, and the serial number was scratched off the gun’s face. Anderson told police that the gun was his and that he had bought it for $300 in Chicago for protection, police said, and he said he knew the serial number had been obliterated.

Anderson was charged with defacing a Michael firearm, possession of a Anderson firearm without a FOID and possession of ammunition without a FOID, according to court documents. Defacing a firearm is a Class 3 felony typically punishable by two to five years in prison.

During a court hearing, Assistant State’s Attorney Alesandra Friend said that the suspects repeatedly lied to police about where the money was located, sending them to different places throughout DeKalb and wasting 7½ hours of police time before the money was found in one of the men’s underwear.

DeKalb police Cmdr. Steve Lekkas said that while the search took up a lot of time, the incident ended with an illegal gun being taken off the streets. He said a significant amount of money was recovered, but not the full $2,800 that was claimed to have been stolen. He said there was no indication the cash was related to drug sales.

Byrd is due in court Monday, Juzang is due in court Dec. 9, Chester is due in court Tuesday, and Anderson is due in court Nov. 21.

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner on Friday ordered a former youth prison to be reopened as a center designed to reduce recidivism in his ongoing effort to reform criminal justice.

The Republican said the closed youth center in Murphysboro will be renovated as a minimum-security prison focused on “life skills and re-entry,” where inmates nearing their release dates will receive educational, vocational and lifeskills training.

“The people of Illinois believe in redemption,” he said in a news release.

“We believe in second chances.”

That conforms to a national trend showing that these accidental shootings spike for children younger than 5 and then again during the teenage years. Life in prison for man who coerced girl into prostitution

EAST ST. LOUIS – An eastern Missouri man has been sentenced to life in prison for coercing a 15-year-old Illinois girl into prostitution.

Marcus Dewayne Thompson of Park Hills, Missouri, pleaded guilty in May to several charges in federal court in East St. Louis. He was sentenced Thursday.

Authorities said Thompson approached the girl in June 2015 at a time when she was suicidal after arguing with her father over becoming pregnant. He promised her a modeling career, but authorities said that instead, Thompson and his wife arranged sex acts with men in Florida, Georgia and Louisiana through

Sixteen-year-old Kaylee Jacob was sitting in a car with a friend on the southern edge of Effingham, a rural town known for its classic cars museum and a nearly 200-foot tall steel cross at the intersection of two highways.

On that evening in October 2015, the friend, a teenage boy, was messing around with a .40 caliber Glock handgun he had stolen from a parked pickup truck.

He removed the magazine, pointed the weapon at his friend’s back and squeezed the trigger without realizing a bullet remained in the chamber.

Rockford on pace to remove 200 blighted homes by 2018

ROCKFORD – Rockford officials said they are aiming to raze 200 dilapidated homes by the end of next year.

The Rockford Register Star reported aldermen approved a plan last year to remove 100 homes that are empty, damaged, violate building codes or are considered dangerous, in an effort to remove blight from neighborhoods.

The city demolished 266 homes from 2012 through 2015. Another 62 have come down this year, with 60 more in the process.

Georgie James said she’s waited six years for the condemned house neighboring hers to be removed. A sign warns firefighters that the structure is weak.

Police recently used the house for a SWAT team exercise.

Salmon, trout stocking in Lake Michigan to be reduced

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – States adjacent to Lake Michigan have agreed to cut back on stocking the lake with chinook salmon and lake trout over the next two years.

The Lake Michigan Committee said chinook stocking rates will drop by 27 percent in 2017, while lake trout stocking will decrease by 12 percent. Further cuts are planned in 2018.

The committee said the reductions are necessary because of a decline in fish that salmon and trout eat, such as alewife and rainbow smelt. The prey fish slump results from changes brought on by invasive quagga and zebra mussels, which filter out plankton that smaller fish need.

Experts worry about vote turmoil on Election Day

ATLANTA – New ID requirements. Unfamiliar or distant polling places. Names missing from the voter rolls.

Those are just some of the challenges that could disrupt voting across the country through Election Day. While most elections have their share of glitches, experts worry that conditions are ripe this year for trouble at the nation’s polling places.

This is the first presidential election year without a key enforcement provision of the federal Voting Rights Act, and 14 states have enacted new registration or voting restrictions. Adding to the uncertainty is a call by GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump for supporters to monitor the polls for voter fraud, and federal government concerns that hackers could try to disrupt the voting process.

All this has civil rights advocates on guard.

“There is going to be a lot going on in this election that we are going to have to watch out for,” said Penda Hair, a civil rights lawyer who represented the North Carolina NAACP in its bid to overturn that state’s voter ID law.

With no national standards for voting, rules vary widely across states and even counties.

Voting experts and civil rights groups are encouraging voters to do their research before heading to the polls. That includes checking to ensure they are registered and finding their voting location, as well as understanding their rights if they face any problems.

“People should not leave without casting a ballot,” said Wendy Weiser, head of the democracy program at the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU’s School of Law. “If you are an eligible voter, you should be able to have

your vote counted no matter what anyone is saying.”

Adding to the potential for confusion are new voter ID laws in nine states as well as reduced hours for early voting and changes to polling locations in some states.

In North Carolina, at least two counties no longer offer Sunday voting. Deborah Dicks Maxwell, 60, said she is worried that this – along with early voting hours largely limited to between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. – will make it harder for people to cast ballots in her home county of New Hanover. She said Sunday voting was popular during North Carolina’s primary in March.

“With the short hours we have and the high turnout that generally occurs in a presidential election year, someone is going to be in line,” said Dicks Maxwell, president of the New Hanover County branch of the NAACP. “Why penalize the citizens when you could have extended the hours and made it easier for them?”

State officials have said the county didn’t offer Sunday voting in 2012 and that the current plan represents an increase in evening hours available during early voting.

Long lines led to frustration during Arizona’s March primary, when some voters in the Phoenix area waited hours to cast ballots after county election officials opened 60 polling stations – fewer than half of what is typical.

Meanwhile, 33 states have accepted a federal offer to check their voter databases and reporting systems for vulnerabilities after hackers tried to breach systems in two states over the summer. Trump’s warning that the election might be rigged, and his call for supporters to monitor polling places, has alarmed some advocacy groups who said such comments threaten to undermine voter confidence in the election.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS LES CAYES, Haiti – As Hurricane Matthew roared across southwestern Haiti, Joselien Jean-Baptiste huddled with his family while the wind whipped at his little house. When it was finally safe to venture outside at dawn, the 60-year-old farmer realized his troubles had only just begun.

The storm knocked down part of the house where he lives with his wife and six children outside of Les Cayes, leaving only a small section of corrugated metal still intact. But that was the least of his problems. The field he had worked for 25 years was a scene of violent upheaval. His rice was swamped with river water; the mango and breadfruit trees were split like matchsticks; his corn flattened or torn from the ground by fierce winds.

“It is going to take us a long, long time to get back on our feet,” Jean-Baptiste said.

Haitian and international agricultural officials said it could be a decade or more before the southwestern peninsula recovers economically from Hurricane Matthew, which struck hard at the rugged region of more than 1 million people that is almost completely dependent on farming and fishing.

The Civil Protection agency said Friday that the death toll from Hurricane Matthew, which made landfall here Oct. 4, had risen to 546, although it was likely to climb higher as reports continued to trickle in from remote areas. Likewise, the statistics about economic losses are still approximate, but appear to be catastrophic.

In the Grand-Anse region, nearly 100 percent of crops and 50 percent of livestock were destroyed, according to the World Food Program. On the outskirts of Les Cayes, where Jean-Baptiste lives, more than 90 percent of crops were lost, and the fishing industry was “paralyzed” as material and equipment washed away, the organization said.

Replanting vegetable crops can be done relatively quickly and rice fields begin to recover as floodwaters recede, but the loss of mature fruit trees that families nurtured for a generation is a staggering blow. “It will take at least 10 years for nature to do what it needs to do to grow the trees back,” said Elancie Moise, an agronomist and senior agriculture ministry official in the south.

Grapefruit, banana and avocado trees were wiped out along with important root crops such as yams, which were inundated with water or damaged by the whipping wind, Moise said. Vetiver, a grass that is used to produce fragrances and is an important export for Haiti, appears to have sustained some root damage but may be one of the few crops to make it, he added.

There are widespread reports of rising prices in the outdoor markets that line the region’s rural roads and of people struggling to find food. “Already there are some people, if you ask them what they ate for dinner last night, they won’t be able to answer you,” Moise said.

This is a region that only recently began recovering from a drought that had decreased crop production by half.

WASHINGTON – Changing the way it does business, Medicare on Friday unveiled a far-reaching overhaul of how it pays doctors and other clinicians.

The goal is to reward quality, penalize poor performance, and avoid paying piecemeal for services. Whether it succeeds or fails, it’s one of the biggest changes in Medicare’s 50-year history.

The complex regulation is nearly 2,400 pages long and will take years to fully implement. It’s meant to carry out bipartisan legislation passed

by Congress and signed by President Barack Obama last year.

The concept of paying for quality has broad support, but the details have been a concern for some clinicians, who worry that the new system will force small practices and old-fashioned solo doctors to join big groups. Patients soon may start hearing about the changes from their physicians, but it’s still too early to discern the impacts.

The American Medical Association said its first look suggests that the administration “has been responsive” to many concerns that doctors raised.

In Congress, staffers were poring over the details. Rep. Tom Price, R-Ga., who worries that Medicare’s

new direction could damage the doctor-patient relationship, said he’s going to give the regulation “careful scrutiny.” Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, chairman of a panel that oversees Medicare, called it an “important step forward,” but said the administration needs to keep listening to concerns.

MACRA, the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act, creates two new payment systems, or tracks, for clinicians. It affects more than 600,000 doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and therapists, a majority of clinicians billing Medicare. Medical practices must decide next year what track they will take.

Starting in 2019, clinicians can earn higher reimbursements if they learn new ways of doing business, joining a leading-edge track that’s called Alternative Payment Models.

That involves being willing to accept financial risk and reward for performance, reporting quality measures to the government, and using electronic medical records.

Medicare said some 70,000 to 120,000 clinicians initially are expected to take that more challenging path.

Officials are hoping the number will grow quickly.

The 12-year-old Sycamore Middle School seventh-grader collected scores of Halloween costumes that she has donated to area nonprofit organizations. Over the three years she has had her costume club, Martin and her mother, Jeanette, report giving away about 800 costumes. This year, about 160 were given away, they said. Distribution was divided among Salem Lutheran Church’s food pantry in Sycamore, and Safe Passage domestic violence shelter and Barb Food Mart – both in DeKalb. We love to see young people such as Susana giving back to the community in fun and meaningful ways.

Thumbs-down: To stolen information making news. Hillary Clinton campaign staffer’s request to move Illinois’ primary up was somewhat noteworthy – the request went nowhere – but what about the origin of the story? The information came from WikiLeaks, the international website that is in name dedicated to government transparency, but also is trafficking in information that has not been “leaked” but “stolen” by hackers. Information that is stolen also can be fabricated; it’s troubling that the Democrats are the only ones who have been the target of this hacking. Regardless your party affiliation, it suggests that outside forces are trying to influence the outcome of the election in a rather transparent and troubling way.

It’s a message worth repeating: Smoke alarms save lives

If a message isn’t getting through, what do you do?

You repeat it until it does.

That’s apparently the reason behind the continued emphasis on smoke alarms by the group that is sponsoring Fire Prevention Week this past week.

For a third straight year, the National Fire Protection Association has focused on the need for everyone to be protected by having working smoke alarms on the premises.

In 2014, the Fire Prevention Week theme was “Smoke alarms save lives: Test yours every month.”

In 2015, the theme was “Hear the beep where you sleep. Every bedroom needs a working smoke alarm!”

And this year, the theme is “Don’t wait – check the date! Replace smoke alarms every 10 years.”

Replace smoke alarms every 10 years?

Whoever knew to do that?

Not enough of us, it appears.

A national survey conducted by the National Fire Protection Association found that 90 percent of Americans polled had no idea how often a smoke alarm should be replaced.

The correct answer: every 10 years.

Many of those surveyed were not aware that smoke alarms even have expiration dates.

Well, they do.

If you leave smoke alarms up past 10 years, you’re putting yourself and your loved ones at risk.

Statistics show that 60 percent of U.S. home fire deaths occur in homes that have no smoke alarms or whose alarms aren’t working – presumably because of lack of batteries or from old age.

Statistics also show that working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half.

So, this is the week to inspect your smoke alarms at home.

The age of the device can be determined by looking on its back or side, where the date of manufacture should be visible. Use that date, not the date when you installed it, as the measure for when the smoke alarm should be replaced.

The survey found that half of Americans had three or more smoke alarms in their homes.

While checking their dates of manufacture, people should replace batteries in their smoke alarms whose life expectancy hasn’t expired.

Don’t have any smoke alarms in your home?

Now is the time to buy and install them.

Kudos to this group for persevering in its mission to prevent fires and save lives.

What the candidates won’t say

Catch politicians in private moments, and you might hear what they really believe: Donald Trump “can do anything” to women because he’s powerful.

Hillary Clinton’s “private” positions aren’t the same as her “public” ones.

In public, politicians mostly get away with spouting talking points and clamming up about questions that really matter.

When Clinton was asked if she agrees with Trump’s approach to terrorism and immigration, she confidently replied, “This is a serious challenge.

We are well-equipped to meet it. And we can do so in keeping with smart law enforcement, good intelligence and in concert with our values.”

That’s meaningless!

Do we have “dumb” law enforcement now? Bad intelligence? What will Clinton do about it? She doesn’t say.

Reporters don’t ask.

When Trump was asked how he’ll handle terrorism, he replied, “I am very unhappy when I look at the world of radical Islam. I’m very unhappy with it. We’re going to find the problem and we’re going to come up with a solution.

Obama could never come up with a solution. No 1, he’s incompetent. And

VIEWS John Stossel No. 2, the solution just is never going to be out there for him.” Trump wants us to trust that he has the solutions. He’ll give us details later, I guess.

The media should talk more about the Clintons’ foundation. It’s raised billions but gives little to outside charities – a measly 6 percent of its assets, according to the foundation’s last filing.

It’s apparently a “pay to play” operation; donors get meetings with Clinton – Clinton family cronies get well-paying jobs.

Neither candidate wants us looking too closely at their financial records.

But both said we should trust them with money and power.

Clinton promises more than $1 trillion in new “investments,” free day care, maternity leave, an expansion of Obamacare, more funding for veterans, new solar subsidies, new bridges and tunnels and “college, tuition-free!” Then she said, “We’re not only going to make all these investments, we’re going to pay for every single one of them!” But that’s absurd.

Sometimes, she says money will come from new “taxes on the rich,” but America’s rich aren’t rich enough to fund her grand schemes. Even if they were, they’d move out of the country or use tricks to evade her high taxes.

Even The New York Times admits that Clinton’s tax plan adds “so many new layers of complexity” that it would “be a huge boon for tax lawyers.”

Trump is as bad, promising tax cuts and new spending on the military, infrastructure and that giant wall. Other than promising that Mexico will pay (it won’t), he never says where he’ll get the funds.

The biggest chunk of America’s budget is entitlements: Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid. Trump never talks about making those benefits sustainable – in fact, he said he “won’t touch” Social Security.

Clinton rarely talks about entitlements at all.

Since we’re $20 trillion in debt, you’d think journalists would press candidates to explain how they’ll pay the bills. But they don’t.

So the candidates talk and talk, and there is so much they don’t say.

Neither candidate will say much about how huge government bureaucra-

cy has gotten. They never talk about the Constitution and what it says presidents cannot do. They almost never talk about the horrible violence that drug prohibition causes.

Instead, we get promises. Trump “will make American great again.” Clinton will “get your kids the opportunities they deserve.” Platitudes. But voters prefer them to ugly truths.

If you look at the details, you realize the candidates can’t be trusted to do very much. Our government is already broke. Someone should level with the public about that instead of promising new free stuff.

Both leading candidates hide from the truth. It’s one more reason I’ll vote Libertarian. Gary Johnson has looked dumb when he’s been asked about foreign affairs, but he does say what needs to be said about Social Security, Medicare, our ruinous debt and the limits of government.

Those are not popular things to talk about. But presidential candidates ought to talk about them anyway.

Barbs trounce Yorkville to seal third straight undefeated conference crown

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The DeKalb football team capped its third consecutive perfect conference championship with an exclamation point.

The No. 6 Barbs scored on all five of their first-half drives and played stellar defense to crush Yorkville, 52-14, on Friday night.

“It was very important to win conference; that was one of our goals coming in,” said DeKalb coach Matt Weckler, who is in his fourth year with the Barbs. “Being able to do it three years in a row is quite a feat, and for these seniors who have been playing varsity for three years, it’s a great accomplishment for them.”

The last conference loss for the Barbs (7-1 overall, 4-0 in conference) came in a 14-7 defeat at Yorkville on Oct. 18, 2013.

The 52 points are a season high for the high-powered Barbs offense, and senior quarterback Derek Kyler was 12 for 23 with 231 yards and four touchdowns. His favorite targets on the night were Devin Williams (four catches, 77 yards, two touchdowns), Zuerek Day (four catches, 66 yards, two touchdowns) and Cole Tucker (three catches, 45 yards).

Kyler also rushed for 70 yards, and starting running back Jelante Young carried it 16 times for 78 yards.

However, the catalyst for the Barbs on the night was senior linebacker Jacob Perkins, who blocked Yorkville’s punt on the opening drive to start DeKalb’s first possession on the Foxes’ 15-yard line.

“It was just a mindset – go and get it,” said Perkins about his first blocked punt. “They run that spread punt.

There’s a big gap and you got to hit it.”

Kyler found Day for a 15-yard touchdown pass on the first play.

Early in the second quarter, after Young scored on a 17-yard run, DeKalb junior defensive lineman Zacchaeus Donahue jumped on a Yorkville fumble to give the Barbs the ball on the Foxes’ 45.

“They’re a good running team, so I expected them to stay to their strength and just stay low and stay aggressive,” said Donahue, who also added a sack later in the game. “We count on our

offense to score, so we have to go out as a defense and make plays.”

The Barbs turned Donahue’s fumble recovery into a 26-yard field goal

by Connor Tierney to put them up 17-0 midway through the fourth.

For Yorkville, junior quarterback Ty Liaromatis was 5 for 10 with 100 yards, but 73 of them came on a touchdown pass to Jason Lewan midway through the second quarter. Austin Avery ran the ball 16 times for 75 yards and an 11-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter for the Foxes.

The run-oriented Foxes (1-6 overall, 0-4 in Northern Illinois Big 12 East) faced a dilemma after the Barbs built a 31-7 lead at halftime when Kyler found Day for a 13-yard score and later connected with Williams in the final moments of the second quarter.

However, Yorkville didn’t veer from its strength and only threw the ball four times in the second half.

“If you get away from what you’re built on, sometimes that can cause even more issues,” Yorkville coach Dan McGuire said. “That’s kind of been our M.O. this season. We can’t afford penalties and turnovers, and that’s what happened tonight.”

After Williams’ second touchdown of the night – a 17-yard connection up the middle – the Barbs later scored on a 65-yard kick off return by Brianjay Ross, who took it down the left sideline after Myers’ 11-yard touchdown run for Yorkville.

The Barbs capped their scoring with a 33-yard touchdown run by Tyrese Dyson with less than a minute remaining. Offensively, the Barbs outgained the Foxes, 469-196.

“Defensively, we just played really well and forced them into a lot of third and longs, which doesn’t suit what they do well,” Weckler said.

While the Barbs’ conference schedule is wrapped up, they face a tall task in the regular-season finale when they face undefeated Sterling, which was ranked No. 2 in 5A coming into the night.

“We don’t really look at where we are in the state, we just look at going in and competing against a good football team,” Weckler said. “Sterling is phenomenal. They’re an awesome team.

For us to beat them, we have to play our best game.”

The Rockets (5-3) – who had 119 yards and five first downs in the first half – didn’t get another first down until the final five minutes of the game. It came on a late scoring drive that also saw the team’s first completion – 37 yards on third-and-10 from the G-K 39 from Brady Gibson to Blaine Bayer. On the next play, Kevin Pedley plunged in from 2 yards out to score with 2:23 left.

The Cogs scored earlier in the fourth quarter to make the game 28-0 on a fourth-and-goal from the 4, when Zach Butler found Guardi on a short pass for the score.

“We were outplayed on special teams and they were able to finish drives early, and that put them in a good position,” R-B coach Pat Elder said. “We had some turnovers and they didn’t. They have a really, really good football team and played clean.”

The Rockets committed three turnovers. The first came in a scoreless game in the first quarter on a third-and-5 from the Cogs’ 35, when Mark Marzahl took off up the middle and broke through for a big gain.

But Miller caught him from behind and Butler recovered.

“He broke through the middle and was carrying the ball out, not high and tight,” Miller said. “So I went in with my arm and ripped it out.”

Two plays later, the Cogs had the game’s first touchdown on a 45-yard run by Aidan Simmons and a 7-0 lead.

In the second quarter, the Cogs added a score when Butler was flushed out of the pocket on the Rockets’ 19 and scrambled to the right side, finding Miller at 10. Miller zigzagged the rest of the way for the second score and a 13-0 lead.

The Rockets answered with a more-than-6-minute drive, but facing a fourth-and-5 on the G-K 21, quarterback Brady Gibson was intercepted by Butler at the end of the half.

“We moved the ball early and couldn’t finish drives,” Elder said.

“We had a chance to score at the end of the half there to make it a onescore game and didn’t. And obviously the kickoff return to start the second half was probably the biggest play of the game.”

The Cogs had just a 19-yard advantage in total offense, and were outgained 173-170 on the ground.

Simmons was the game’s leading rusher with 125 yards on 14 carries, while Marzahl had 20 carries and 92 yards to lead the Rockets.

Genoa-Kingston looks to wrap up its perfect season next week at Mendota, while the Rockets head to Woodstock.

PREP FOOTBALL: GENESEO 31, KANELAND 28

sports@daily-chronicle.com GENESEO – In a game that decided the fate of Kaneland’s season, the Knights came up short in their 31-28 loss to Geneseo on Friday.

Kaneland (3-5) gained possession on their own 24-yard line after Geneseo punted them the ball with less than a minute left to save their season. After failing to reach midfield with no timeouts left, the clock expired and gave Kaneland their fifth loss of the year, making them officially ineligible for the playoffs in 2016.

“This was a tough one,” Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly said. “This was a really great and exciting high school football game. We’ve been on the other end and won a couple of tight games, but unfortunately we couldn’t finish this one out tonight.”

Kaneland went into halftime with a 14-3 advantage over Geneseo (6-2) after being effective on offense, specifically through the air.

Both teams shifted to a higher gear in the second half as the offenses traded scores in a game that came down to the last seconds of the game.

after finishing with 336 passing after completing 28 of his 41 pass attempts and passing for four touchdowns.

“We told our guys that anyone can play a good half, but good teams finish out the game,” Fedderly said.

“We said the score was 0-0 and we’re going to come out and win the second half.”

The Maple Leafs got their running game going in the second half and opened up the game after stuffing the Knights on the 1-yard line and preventing Kaneland’s chance at extending their lead. The very next play, running back Drew Rapps looked to be stopped for no gain, but

bounced outside to a wide open field and took the ball all the way for a 99yard touchdown to give the Maple Leafs a 17-14 lead midway through the third quarter.

Jordan Jackson led the way for the Maple Leafs with 146 yards on 24 carries and two touchdowns. Rapps finished the game with 108 yards on nine carries and two touchdowns.

“The goal line stand obviously gave us a lot of confidence,”Geneseo coach Larry Johnson Jr. said. “To turn around on offense right away and go 99 yards is obviously big, too, so that was a very important twoplay sequence there for us.”

Sycamore falls short of Morris’ running, defensive game

roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – For most of the game Friday night, the Sycamore football team gave Morris all it wanted and more.

In the end, though, Morris’ running game and defense were enough to pull the Redskins through to a 28-13 Northern Illinois Big 12 East win. The loss puts Sycamore at 4-4 on the year and makes the Week 9 game against Rochelle virtually a playoff game for the Spartans.

Neither offense could muster much in the early going as the first quarter ended in a scoreless tie. Morris got on the board first in the second quarter when Keagan Sobol broke free for a

44-yard touchdown, and Dallas Hastings’ kick made it 7-0 with 4:39 to play in the first half. Morris took the 7-0 lead into halftime.

Sycamore tied the game late in the third quarter, when Luke Ryan scored on a nine-yard run on a reverse and Grant McConkey added the kick with 1:04 to play in the quarter.

Morris broke off yardage in big chunks on the ensuing drive, getting consecutive runs 14 and 12 yards by quarterback Ricky Del Favero sandwiched around a 30-yard burst by Michael Gerischer to get to the Sycamore 17. Gerischer ran eight yards to the nine on the final play of the third quarter and scored from nine yards out on the first play of the fourth for a

14-7 Morris lead.

The big play theme continued when Ty Sulaver connected with Ryan for a 61-yard TD pass two minutes later. The point-after kick was made, but there was a penalty on Sycamore; moving the ball back 15 yards, so the Spartans went for two.

Morris stopped the pass attempt, only to get whistled for pass interference, so Sycamore attempted another kick, which failed and left Morris with a 14-13 lead.

The Redskins (6-3, 3-1) answered with another touchdown drive, to take a 21-13 lead with 5:01 remaining and looked to have the game locked up when Sycamore turned it over on downs at midfield with 3:03 remain-

ing. On Morris’ first play, however, Sycamore forced a fumble and Spartan defender Henry Fair recovered, breathing new life into Sycamore.

Morris’ Delaney Stutzki followed with his second interception of the night on the next play, though, and teammate Michael Feeney added the game’s final TD on a 54-yard run with 2:21 to play.

“We knew this was going to be a tough, close game,” Morris coach Alan Thorson said. “Sycamore’s defense is very fast and very physical, and it took us a while to get going.

They are a good team.”

Peyton Wiegmann led Sycamore with 102 rushing yards, while Sulaver threw for 158 with 81 going to Ryan.

Carpenter in 13th place after one round of state golf tourney

Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington, DeKalb senior Austin Freeman shot a 76, putting him in a tie for 26th place.

In the 2A boys tournament at Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University, Kaneland senior Jake Hed carded a 77 and finished the day in a tie for 22nd place, just four strokes off the four leaders. His classmate, Brett Glennon, shot an 82 and was in a tie for 56th place.

Huskies must find way to limit Central Michigan’s Rush

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey had high praise for Central Michigan quarterback Cooper Rush.

Carey said that Rush is the best quarterback the Huskies have seen this season as the two teams square off at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Huskie Stadium.

“Ton of respect for him and his career, and how he commands the offense and how he goes about his business,” Carey said.

The Chippewas (4-2 overall, 1-1 in Mid-American Conference West) are the only team in the division that Carey has a losing record against. In 2014, they snapped Northern Illinois’ 28-game home winning streak with a 34-17 victory in Huskie Stadium. Last season, the Huskies turned the ball over on a fumble three times and lost 29-19 in Mt. Pleasant.

“We’ve won a lot of football games around here, especially in conference,” Carey said. “We’ve certainly had great success, and Central has been probably the one exception to that. I think that they are, I don’t know if it’s matchups or circumstances or it’s both or it’s all of it, but certainly, a ton of respect for them because it has been a back-and-forth event, especially since I’ve been here.”

A main reason for Central Michigan’s success this season has been Rush, who is averaging 301 passing yards a game – including a season-high 402 in a 49-35 loss at Virginia. In a 44-21 win over UNLV, he went 20 for 33 with 352 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions. On the season, he’s thrown for 1,806 yards, 15 touchdowns and five interceptions.

The Huskies (1-5 overall, 1-1 in MAC West) are clinging to bowl eligibility, but the offense has done better the past two weeks with senior quarterback Anthony Maddie under center. In his two starts, Maddie is completing 56.3 percent of his passes with three touchdowns and three interceptions and is averaging 261 passing yards and 135.5 rushing yards per game.

However, their struggles have come on the defensive side for the Huskies.

They’re second-to-last in the conference in total defense (499.3 yards per game) and scoring defense (37.8 points per game).

Central Michigan coach John Bonamego, who went 7-6 in his first season with the Chippewas last year, echoed several other coaches the Huskies have faced so far, saying Northern Illinois’ is better than its record indicates.

“If you want to be a contender, you have to find ways to win on the road,” Bonamego said. “We’ve done that pretty well since I’ve been here. When you go

HINCKLEY – This year’s Class 1A Hinckley-Big Rock Regional final featured a rematch of last year’s final, in which the Hinckley-Big Rock Royals beat St. Edward’s Catholic.

This year, the story ended differently as the Green Wave took the title with a 3-1 overtime victory.

St. Edward, which lost, 6-3, to the Royals last year, took a lead in the first half on a goal by forward A.J. Franklin. The Royals found an equalizer off the boot of Carson Pickert in the second half; and although both teams had multiple scoring chances late in the second half, regulation time ended with a 1-1 tie.

In the first overtime period, the Green Wave scored two quick goals.

Franklin netted his second to give St. Edward a 2-1 lead, and Josh Johansen added an insurance goal seconds later. The Royals could not capitalize on several golden opportunities, and Green Wave got their revenge from last season by taking back the regional title.

“We knew they had a lot of strong players in the forward and the mid-

field,” Royals coach Karla Vietinghoff said. “And we did a great job of containing them up until the overtime periods. We executed well, but they made their shots.”

The Green Wave were aided by three assists from Zach Olenek, and also played tight and aggressive defense in a match that saw five yellow cards issued.

“We watched them in their game against Aurora Catholic the other night,” Green Wave coach Tim Brieger said. “We knew they were such a tight team. Hats off to them, they played a great match. They have such a great sweeper on defense, and their keeper made some phenomenal saves. But the guys settled down in overtime, and we’ve been here before, so the guys knew exactly what to do. It was amazing.”

With the win, the Green Wave improve to and advance to the Genoa-Kinston sectional. They will play Wednesday, and do not yet know their opponent.

The Royals, who scored six straight to stun Aurora Central Catholic, 6-3, in the semifinal Wednesday, finish their season with a record of 11-11.

WATERMAN – In a game that featured tight defense and much of the play happening at midfield, it would take only one goal to capture victory.

That goal came off the foot of Harvest Christian Academy’s Raphael DeSouza as the Lions beat Genoa-Kingston, 1-0, to win the Class 1A Indian Creek Regional.

“We knew we couldn’t get cocky for this game,” DeSouza said. “And we wanted to play hard as a team, because we knew they would play us hard. We had to come together as a family. We knew it wouldn’t be an easy game, and it wasn’t.”

In a regular season match earlier this year, the Lions beat the Cogs 4-0. And G-K coach Randy Tate said that he and his team expected a competitive match.

“They burned us earlier this year,” Tate said. “So we knew who their main players were. So our game plan was to mark up their two high scorers, and

wherever they went, we’d be on them.

And I thought we did a good job of that in the first half. In the second half, we came out a little flat. And one mistake in a close game against a good team, that’s all the difference.”

The game was scoreless at halftime, and DeSouza’s goal came with 23 minutes remaining. Plenty of time for an equalizer. Although the Cogs mounted several valiant scoring opportunities late in the game, they were unable to capitalize.

“Our whole plan was to be aggressive,” Lion’s head coach Sina Vidic said.

“We’ve had a lot of chemistry in the playoffs so far, so we knew we’d have that going. And our backline has been solid and not been allowing many chances.”

With the win, the Harvest Christian Academy Lions improve to 14-2-1 on the season, and advance to the Genoa-Kingston Sectional. The Cogs finish the season 13-7, and will wait until next season to make another run at a regional championship.

Can Cubs stop Roberts from Rookie Zastryzny stealing another Oct. upset? could be big lefty

The man once acquired by Theo Epstein to swipe what became the most famous stolen base in history is now the manager trying to steal away Epstein’s latest shot at the World Series.

And maybe literally – if Dave Roberts’ Dodgers can get the right guys on base against the Cubs’ Jon Lester and take advantage of Lester’s troubles throwing to bases in Saturday’s opener of the National League Championship Series.

“I thought about that at their place,” said Cubs catcher David Ross of the Cubs’ 1-0 loss to the Dodgers the last time Lester faced them, in the teams’ last meeting Aug. 28. “He’ll try to run the guys that can run. They don’t have a whole lot of team speed. But the guys that do run you’re going to have to be aware.”

Ross, who broke into the big leagues with Roberts as a veteran mentor with the Dodgers, calls the first-year Dodger manager one of the smartest teammates he’s had. And he was aware enough of Roberts’ guile that after the first batter against Lester reached on a walk in that August game, Ross tried to pick him off first – only to have the throw get past Anthony Rizzo for a two-base error.

“They’re going to be ready,” Ross said. “They’re going to take advantage of every small detail.”

Anybody who doesn’t believe Roberts has the brass to get aggressive against Lester – or anything else the Cubs put in his way in the best-ofseven series – didn’t watch him bring his closer into Thursday’s Game 5 in Washington, squeeze 51 pitches out of Kenley Jansen, then bring Clayton Kershaw in to get the final two outs of the NLDS clincher.

“It’s so unpredictable, and you never know how it’s going to play out,” Roberts said even before Thursday during a discussion about small moments and sequences making big waves in postseason series.

Epstein, the Cubs president, made bigger acquisitions than Roberts as the Red Sox general manager that paid off during Boston’s curse-busting fall of 2004 alone. But when Epstein talks about the smaller, detailed moves he has made over the years to put playoff rosters together, the Roberts trade that summer easily is his all-time favorite.

“For sure, it was,” he said.

Roberts’ stolen base as a pinch runner in the ninth inning of that elimination Game 4 against the Yankees in the ALCS that year turned into the tying run of a game the Sox won in extra innings – the turning point as the Red Sox overcame a 3-0 series deficit to win in seven games and go on to their first title since Babe Ruth.

“Every roster is constructed with a purpose, and you never know,” said Roberts, who might win the Manager of the Year award this year because of what he did with an injury-ravaged roster during the regular season. “With what Theo did

“And a lot of times in those series, that can ultimately change a series and win baseball games.”

Sometimes even championships.

“In this game where runs are such a premium,” Roberts said, “whether it’s a defensive play not made or a stolen base that you can get, I think that it just shows that some small plays or acquisitions can ultimately turn out big.”

In that game against Lester in August, by the way, the Dodgers won 1-0 on a one-out error in the ninth, followed by a two-out mental mistake on a throwing decision.

Little things.

Epstein found no Roberts-like speed guy on the summer trade market this year for the Cubs. But he already has an athletic mix of young and veteran players.

So he added to a thin lefty relief core with Mike Montgomery and even closer Aroldis Chapman – in part with an eye toward potential playoff opponents such as the heavily left-hitting Dodgers.

And don’t be surprised if rookie Rob Zastryzny – who shut down the Dodgers in a long relief appearance in August – is on the NLCS roster announced Saturday morning.

“You want to start with a vision of a championship team in your mind and then work backwards from that,” Epstein said. “And think of all the things that could derail it and then try to mitigate as many of those potential obstacles as you can.”

Who knew in 2004 that 12 years later one of those October obstacles for Epstein would be Roberts.

“They’ll be prepared,” Ross said of Roberts and his underdog core of veteran hitters and electric young pitching. “They’ve got guys that are proven winners and are going to take advantage of every avenue they can.”

Another round of the playoffs, another rookie for the Cubs?

That could be the case if the Cubs add an extra bullpen arm to their playoff roster, as expected, for the National League Championship Series against the left-leaning Dodgers lineup.

Rob Zastryzny, who impressed as much for his poise as his 1.13 ERA in eight appearances after a late-season call-up, would join lefties Travis Wood and Mike Montgomery in the expanded bullpen (along with lefty closer Aroldis Chapman).

“If I get the chance, I’m more than ready for it,” said Zastryzny, who retired 11 of the 12 batters he faced in a long relief appearance at Dodger Stadium Aug. 27 – against a lineup that included lefty hitters Chase Utley, Corey Seager, Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Reddick, Joc Pederson and Andrew Toles.

“I felt very comfortable on the mound,” he said. “I watched the [Dodgers’ NLDS clincher Thursday], and I’ve thrown against them before. So it’d be them making adjustments, me making adjustments. They’re a great team.”

Zastryzny said Friday he hadn’t been told anything by the team. He also said he didn’t root for the Dodgers, despite what it could mean personally for him.

“Because it’s not about me. It’s about the team,” he said.

“Things happened the way they happened, and if I get the chance I’ll be more than ready.”

Adding Zastryzny likely would mean dropping a lefty bench bat such as Tommy La Stella (one at-bat in the NLDS) or Chris Coghlan (who played in three games).

Zastryzny would be the fourth rookie on the roster, joining right-hander Carl Edwards Jr., catcher Willson Contreras and outfielder Albert Almora Jr.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon pronounced right-hander Kyle Hendricks’ forearm fit for pitching and announced his NLCS rotation will remain the same as in the NLDS: Jon Lester, Hendricks, Jake Arrieta and John Lackey.

Arrieta, who faced Giants ace Madison Bumgarner in Game 3 of the NLDS, likely would be opposite Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw in this one, too. That also could match them up in a decisive Game 7 on Oct. 23 if the series goes that far.

HISTORY CLASS

As they share the postseason stage for the first time since their history-making fall of 2004, it would seem impossible for Cubs president Theo Epstein and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts not to flash back to Roberts’ pinch-running stolen base for the Red Sox that sparked a four-game comeback to beat the Yankees on the way to the World Series.

“I don’t think of the steal that much,” Epstein said. “I just think about what a good person he is. He’s got incredible integrity, and it’s been a pleasure to get to know him over the years.”

Roberts talked about the respect he has for Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer (an assistant to Epstein in Boston in ’04). “And they really helped me get a ring,” Roberts said.

“Just having him in our back pocket and then right there on the cusp of being ready and out there on the field, actually with us in pads, swaggin’ up out there with us – it felt good to have that man out there. It’s definitely going to give us an extra push heading into [Sunday’s] game.”

The defense could use it. At full strength, the Bears have potential to develop a defense with some bite.

But the injuries have exposed their inexperience and lack of depth. The Bears have only four takeaways in five games – three interceptions, one fumble recovery – tied for 26th in the league. Their last defensive touchdown was three seasons ago – Zack Bowman’s 43-yard interception return against the Browns. That was one of five defensive scores under defensive coordinator Mel Tucker in 2013 – a legacy of Lovie Smith’s defense. They had nine defensive scores in Lovie’s final year of 2012.

That seems like ages ago now.

These Bears have a long way to go. But they’ve got to get healthy first.

Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan returned last week against the Colts after missing two games after thumb surgery, but he wasn’t all there.

“It wasn’t my best game by far,” he said. “Mentally, I kind of let it slip away. I’ve got to get back in the groove.

Physically, I was fine. Mentally, I’ve just got to get it right.”

Trevathan blamed it on rust.

“Just getting a feeling for the game again and learning the defense,” he said. “Once I got in there and got it moving, the second half I felt better.”

With another week of practice and another week for his thumb to heal, Trevathan expects to be looser, more instinctive and ready to play more like himself against the Jaguars on Sunday at Soldier Field.

“I feel way better,” he said. “Not worrying about my hand so much because I’ve got a game under my belt – I know I can play with it. I’m not too concerned with it.

“Just knowing the plays and being comfortable with [defensive coordinator Vic Fangio’s] play calling, flying

The return of Trevathan at full speed – physically and mentally – would be a boost the Bears’ defense needs at this point of the season. Injuries have short-circuited the development of Fangio’s defense – never more evident than last week against Andrew Luck and the Colts. The Bears had five sacks, but still could not contain Luck, who threw for 322 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in a 29-23 victory.

Have they finally turned the corner?

This was a pretty good week at Halas Hall for Fangio’s defense. Pernell McPhee, out all season after undergoing knee surgery in January, returned to practice and could be active against the Packers on Thursday.

Trevathan expects to be closer to 100 percent. Even cornerback Bryce Callahan’s return to practice on a limited basis after leaving the Colts game with a hamstring injury should be considered a victory. Hamstrings are rarely kind to the Bears, yet Callahan is questionable for Sunday’s game against the Jaguars.

To measure your blood pressure: (1) Sit at a table with your arm resting comfortably on it and your feet flat on the floor. It’s easier for most right-handers to take the pressure in the left arm, and vice versa.

(2) Secure the blood pressure cuff snugly but not tightly around your bare upper arm.

(3) Rest your arm on the table in a relaxed posture, with the cuff at about the same level as your heart.

(4) Relax for a minute or two, taking slow deep breaths, and then take the first reading.

(5) Wait for at least two minutes and take another reading.

Take two measurements in the morning and two more in the evening. Take your measurements at about the same time every day. Be consistent about taking them either before or after your coffee and medications. Avoid taking the measurements right after exercising.

Dear Reader: Keeping your blood pressure in check is vital to maintaining heart health and preventing stroke. But the way most of us monitor our pressure – by trekking to the doctor’s office for occasional blood pressure checks – is far from ideal.

I know I can be disrespectful at times, but I don’t get into trouble and I don’t understand why they act like they do. I’m really stressed out. In the past I have gotten so upset I cut myself on the wrist, and I have drunk liquid pain medicine. (I know it was stupid.) But sometimes I seriously think about killing myself. Bridge players are happy with plus scores, even if occasionally they have to “borrow” tricks from opponents’ mistakes. In today’s deal, though, both East and South have chances to make good plays. What are they?

South is in four spades, and West leads his fourth-highest heart. Also, what was West’s more effective lead?

The North hand has eight losers (three spades, two hearts, two diamonds and one club), perfect for a game-invitational raise. But change the spade jack to the spade queen, and that lowers the loser count to seven and -- just -- makes the hand worth a forcing raise.

South has 10 winners: six spades, one heart and three clubs. But he might lose one heart, two diamonds and one club, if the club finesse loses, and West can push a diamond through dummy’s king, with East holding the ace. South must keep West off the lead.

East, knowing his partner is not underleading the ace, should play his heart 10 at trick one, to find out who holds the heart queen.

If South takes that trick, he goes down. The play continues: draw trumps, take a losing club finesse, low-heart lead to West’s queen, diamond shift.

However, if South plays low from his hand at trick one, he is safe.

Lastly, suppose West had led a diamond. Then, if East had won with his 10 and shifted to a heart, four spades would have failed. Nevertheless, it is usually better to lead from shorter suits against trump contracts.
