Grieving parents help each other through support group Nearly one in four pregnancies ends in loss, according to SHARE Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support Inc., and some in our community who have experienced this loss need support in their bereavement.

My husband and I are a part of the statistic. In August 2015, we suffered through the loss of our pregnancy. We had nowhere to turn, no one who understood and little family support.

In the nick of time, a support group was created.

Pastor Marty Marks from Immanuel Lutheran Church in DeKalb and Teresa Barnes from Associates in Counseling in Sycamore volunteered to help create a Miscarriage/Infant Loss Support Group for area residents.

Our group started meeting in April; it usually meets from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month.

“With the population of DeKalb County growing, we have a duty to serve our residents,” Marks said.

Meeting with other bereaved mothers and fathers has been an integral part of our healing process. We will always miss our baby; however, the grief is more manageable when you have others to lean on.

Marks and Barnes have led this group with knowledge, sensitivity and dedication.

They have donated their time and resources to create a space where bereaved parents can find comfort.

They have given a gift to DeKalb County, and we should be proud of them.

In August, Teresa moved. I know she will be quite the community contributor in Colorado as she was here. They are lucky to have her.

Still, the group meets each month in the conference room at Immanuel Lutheran, 511 Russell Road, DeKalb. As we gather around tables, we have an opportunity to find solace from our pain. Compassion is everywhere during the support group meetings.

Group members do not judge each other’s grief. We have found through the leadership of Marks and Barnes that the path of grief is different for everyone.

“It is a necessary part of our human experience,” Marks said. “While in some ways I stand by the statement, ‘There is no wrong way to grieve,’ there are also some ‘best practices’ that make the process easier and less painful.”

Focusing on positives and what we still have, rather than dwelling on what’s been lost, is important, Marks said.

Finding healthy ways to deal with the anger that often accompanies loss is important, he said.

Asked to describe the group atmosphere, Barnes said she was particularly impressed with the candid vulnerability of the men in the group. She said their honesty about their spiritual journey and their struggles to maintain their faith in the wake of loss set the tone of honesty and transparency in the group.

The miscarriage support group also has received attention from officials at KishHealth System, which is now part of Northwestern Medicine.

Health officials have been inspired to create a committee to improve services for miscarriage/infant loss patients. Eventually, the group will move from Immanuel Lutheran to Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb.

Our community needs to know how this grass-roots group has helped bereaved parents.

“Pastor Marty and Teresa have facilitated a spiritual, physical and emotional healing in the wake of our devastating losses,” group member Wes George said.

17th annual Altrusa Spelling Bee raises funds, provides fun

rgillespie@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Jack Reich and his two teammates huddled a moment before he stepped to the microphone Thursday in the final round of a charitable spelling bee: “n-a-c-e-ll-e”.

“That is correct,” said Brian Adams, news director at B-95 WDKBFM radio, who served as the emcee for the Altrusa Spelling Bee. But Reich, 69, Malcom Swanson, 72, and Susan Woodyard, 60, needed to spell one more word in order to win the competition and defend their three-year title. Although Reich had come across “nacelle” (the outer casing of an aircraft engine) in a book he’d read before, the next word – for the tiny bone in the middle ear – would be a stumper.

“I’ve never heard of that word in my life,” he said. “I had no idea what I was doing.”

But the trio spelled it correctly and remain the reigning champions of the spelling bee, which is sponsored annually by Altrusa International of DeKalb and Sycamore. The winners were from Club 55.

They took home a trophy and T-shirts.

“We dedicate this to Cheryl Clayton,” Swanson said. “She was on our team before, and she’s having medical problems at the moment.”

This was the 17th annual bee, held in the parish activity center at St. Mary’s Church in Sycamore.

The event drew 13 teams with three participants each, that all represented businesses, schools and organizations from around the county. Each team had a sponsor.

“It’s all basically for the fun of it,” said Nancy Heal, head of Altrusa.

She said funds raised from the event would go to literary programs at area organizations and an endowment fund in the DeKalb County Foundation. Last year, $6,000 was raised and distributed to area libraries, schools and other learning centers. Additionally, four students from DeKalb and Sycamore high schools and Kishwaukee College received scholarships.

Clinton-Rosette seventh-graders Ben Grych, 12, Devin Snow, 12, and Brick Schoila-Williams, 13, and trios from places such as the NIU law school easily spell words including “January” and “collage.”

But it was a pesky “rhinoceros” that knocked the middle schoolers out the competition. Yet they didn’t go home empty-handed, as the kids won a pizza party for team spirit and audience cheerleaders – among

them, the school’s principal.

“It’s a fun way to get the kids out into the community and doing something outside of school,” Principal Tim Vincent said. “I’m kind of a spelling bee nerd, so I like it.”

The DeKalb High School honor society team made it through to Round 9, but the young scholars got tripped up – and eliminated – by “monophyodont.”

Other teams represented organizations including Safe Passage, DeKalb County Community Gardens, Heartland Bank, Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra and Kishwaukee College.

Heal said she looks forward to raising even more this year so 17 more organizations can benefit, and one high school senior again can receive a scholarship.

“It makes us [Altrusa] feel great,” she said about the outreach. “And I hope it makes them feel good, too.”

Leftover jail material used for future project

SYCAMORE – Dirt is being moved to the proposed Sycamore Crossing site, but commercial development still could be a ways off.

Excavated materials from the DeKalb County Jail expansion project are being moved to the site, on the west side of Peace Road near Sarah Drive, to be used in the construction of the commercial development.

Jeremy Roling, construction manager for the jail expansion project, said the developer of the site, First

Midwest Group in Rockford, needed dirt to build up the ground and level it with the road.

“When we first started this project, we found out they were looking for fill,” Roling said. “The contractors set up an agreement independent of this project that they could use our materials.”

John Sauter, the city’s director of building and engineering, said that area of land, including nearby residences, is a plat titled Sycamore Crossing and is zoned for commercial use.

for First Midwest Group, said the company is not yet announcing what will be built at Sycamore Crossing, but it will be making the land usable for future retail.

“The site has low areas, and the jail had fill that was available,” Keys said.

Sauter said the city had to ensure that Environmental Protection Agency requirements were met when moving the excavated materials, or spoils.

He said the spoils left over from digging for the jail basement do not have any further use in the jail expansion project.

“We don’t need any of that dirt,”

Sauter said. “It had to be hauled away, so they are stockpiling it.”

City Manager Brian Gregory said the City Council approved the Sycamore Crossing plat in 2008, and as the economy improves, the arrangement for transporting the spoils becomes a “win-win situation.”

“At some point, when development does occur, the site will need to be raised,” Gregory said.

Roling said some spoils still are being transported, but major excavation work was finished in the summer.

The jail expansion project is slated for completion in summer 2018.

DeKalb mum on departure of community development chief

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Ellen Divita was in her usual spot at Monday’s City Council meeting, seated at the table reserved for city leaders and weighing in on agenda items – and there was no indication that Tuesday would be her last day as director of community development.

It is unclear whether her departure was voluntary, or even was as abrupt as it appeared to be.

Her boss, City Manager Anne Marie Gaura, would not disclose whether Divita had tendered a resignation letter or given the customary two

weeks’ notice.

“Ellen is no longer with the city.

She is pursuing other interests,” Gaura said. “I won’t go into personnel specifics. ... I can only say she’s no longer with the city.”

The community development department oversees such services as code enforcement, planning and zoning regulations, and economic development efforts and issues. The staff of at least nine includes city planners, a neighborhood program specialist and a building inspector.

“Any community development issues that I asked her to get involved in all worked to outcomes,” 6th Ward Alderman Dave Baker said. “I was happy to work with her.”

Fourth Ward Alderman Bob Snow said he does not have much interaction with city staff. He has, however, had to deal in recent months with special requests by his constituents that flowed through Divita’s department.

“Any of my dealings with her have been fine,” Snow said. “I don’t really know how she operated on a day-today basis.”

Jo Ellen Charlton, a principal planner in the department, has been named interim director, Gaura said.

Mayor John Rey would not speak about Divita’s work as head of the department, which is charged with, among other functions, promoting investment in the city. Instead, Rey referred all comments to Gaura.

Some aldermen said they found out only late Wednesday or Thursday morning that Divita was gone from her post. They offered praise regarding their interactions with her.

BRIEFS DeKalb Park District encourages youth to try playing lacrosse

DeKALB – The DeKalb Park District is encouraging young people to try out the fast-growing sport of lacrosse with two events this fall, including one this weekend.

The district will hold a Try Lacrosse Day from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Kiwanis Park, at the corner of Fairview Drive and South 4th Street in DeKalb.

The clinic is free and open to students from kindergarten to 12th grade. Equipment will be available to borrow for the day, and no experience is required, according to a news release from the district.

SYCAMORE – The Sycamore Park District plans to create a safer path for Sycamore Middle School students, using a $632,600 grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The grant will be used for the first of two phases of the district’s plan to extend the city’s park trails.

The first phase connects Route 23 near Sycamore Middle School to the Brickville Road parking area, which has access to Leon Larson and Sycamore Lake parks. It also widens and resurfaces the half-mile path along Route 23 from the Kishwaukee River bridge to Maplewood Drive.

Park Board President Ted Strack said the school and community have been working with the park district to establish the trail connection because of the need for a safer path for students.

“This creates better access for kids to get to school without having to go on the roads,” he said.

This connection will cost $790,750 in total, with the district contributing 20

percent, or $158,150.

Executive Parks Director Dan Gibble said the state program that provided the grant is paid for through a federal transportation act that had not been funded for several years.

“Once Illinois had its money, IDOT moved pretty fast,” Gibble said. “We had our grant application ready; we were just waiting for funding to come through to submit the application.”

Extending the trails is part of the district’s Action 2020 plans, which are budgeted to cost $13 million provided through $9 million in property taxes, $3 million in grants and $1 million from fundraising.

Strack said the board likely would apply for two grants to fund the second phase of trail construction, which is planned to connect the Great Western Trail to Old Mill Park.

“The second phase will be quite a bit more expensive,” he said. “It could be divided into two pieces to maximize the amount we can receive in grants.”

The second trail extension will be longer and cross over the Kishwaukee River twice, requiring two new bridges, Strack said.

WASHINGTON – Hillary Clinton’s campaign tried to move the Illinois presidential primary to a later date, saying a contest held after the Super Tuesday primaries might stop momentum for a moderate Republican candidate and emphasizing that Clinton and her husband “won’t forget” a political favor, emails made public Thursday show.

A November 2014 email hacked from the accounts of Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta was among nearly 2,000 new emails published by the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks. The email, from Clinton’s future campaign manager Robby Mook to Podesta, said Obama administration officials should use their connections in the president’s home state to try to push back the March 15 Illinois primary by at least a month.

“The overall goal is to move the IL primary out of mid-March, where they are currently a lifeline to a moderate Republican candidate after the mostly southern Super Tuesday,” Mook wrote.

Rauner condemns sexual assault, but stays mum on Trump

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner condemned sexual assault “in the strongest possible way” on Thursday in light of several women’s allegations that Donald Trump groped them, but the Illinois Republican still refused to answer whether he’ll vote for the GOP presidential nominee.

Rauner has avoided even saying Trump’s name when asked about him and has reiterated that he has not made an endorsement in the presidential race, but stops short of saying he won’t vote for him.

Chicago-area man sentenced to 7 years in DUI crash

ST. CHARLES – A Chicago-area man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for hitting a motorcycle while driving drunk and severing the motorcyclist’s lower leg.

A Wednesday statement from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office said Quinn Gabnay, 46, was convicted on several counts of aggravated DUI during a bench trial this year.

Prosecutors said the Elburn man was driving on a rural road in 2014 when his pickup truck veered into the wrong lane and hit the Harley-Davidson. They said the motorcyclist had pulled toward the shoulder of the road but was still struck.

Prosecutors said Gabnay’s blood-alcohol level was nearly 2½ times Illinois’ legal limit.

Police: 3-year-old fatally shoots self in Chicago suburb

WAUKEGAN – Authorities said the gunshot that killed a 3-yearold boy was self-inflicted.

Waukegan police said the boy found his father’s gun 9 mm semiautomatic gun on a dresser in his parents’ bedroom when he awoke early Thursday. He took the gun into the living room of his home and accidentally shot himself in the head.

The child was taken to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan, where he was pronounced dead. The Lake County Coroner’s Office identified the boy as Jeremiah Banks.

Authorities said his father had a valid firearm owner’s identification card.

The police statement said the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office will decide later whether charges will be filed.

Trump calls sexual assault accusers ‘horrible liars’

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Lashing back, Donald Trump heatedly rejected the growing list of sexual assault allegations against him as “pure fiction” on Thursday, hammering his female accusers as “horrible, horrible liars” as the already-nasty presidential campaign sank further into charges of attacks on women.

Campaign foe Hillary Clinton said “the disturbing stories just keep on coming” about her Republican opponent, but she let first lady Michelle Obama’s passionate response carry the day. Obama, in battleground New Hampshire, warned that the New York billionaire’s behavior “is not something we can ignore.”

After years of working to end “this kind of violence and abuse and disrespect ... we’re hearing these exact same things on the campaign trail. We are drowning in it,” Obama declared, her voice cracking with emotion. “We can’t expose our children to this any longer, not for another minute, let alone for four years.”

With Election Day less than four weeks away, Republican Trump was again forced to defend himself against allegations of sexual misconduct, five days after a video surfaced in which he bragged about kissing and groping women without their permission.

Similar behavior was detailed by women who accused Trump in articles published late Wednesday by The New York Times and the Palm Beach Post. Separately, a People Magazine reporter offered a first-person account accusing Trump of attacking her while she was in Florida to interview him and his pregnant

wife.

Ever defiant, the New York billionaire denied the allegations and blamed them on Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the complicit news media as he campaigned in Florida. He promised to sue his media critics and said he was preparing evidence that would discredit his female accusers, whom he called “horrible people. They’re horrible, horrible liars.”

He went further during an evening appearance in Columbus, Ohio, saying he “never met” some of the women.

“I don’t know who they are,” he insisted and said they “made up stories.”

“These vicious claims about me, of inappropriate conduct with women, are totally and absolutely false. And the Clintons know it,” he said earlier. He offered no evidence discrediting the new reports except to ask why his accusers had waited years and then made their allegations less than a month before the election.

His comments came soon after he called a reporter “a sleazebag” for asking whether Trump had ever touched or groped a woman without her consent.

Trump’s attacks on his accusers’ credibility marked an awkward break from campaign manager Kellyanne Conway, who earlier in the week highlighted a Clinton tweet that said “every survivor of sexual assault deserves to be heard, believed, and supported.”

Conway hoped to encourage more women to come forward with allegations against Bill Clinton, building on the campaign’s Sunday decision to bring three of the former president’s accusers to the second presidential debate.

But several leading authors praised the news.

Nobel laureate Toni Morrison said in a statement that she was pleased and that Dylan was “an impressive choice.” Salman Rushdie, who has written songs with U2’s Bono, tweeted that Dylan is “the brilliant inheritor of the bardic tradition. Great choice.”

Dylan’s award also was welcomed by a venerable literary organization, the Academy of American Poets.

“Bob Dylan receiving the Nobel Prize in literature acknowledges the importance of literature’s oral tradition, and the fact that literature and poetry exists in culture in multiple modes,” executive director Jennifer Benka said in a statement.

Critics can argue whether “Visions of Johanna” is as literary as “Waiting for Godot,” but Dylan’s stature among musicians is unchallenged. He is the most influential songwriter of his time, who brought a new depth, range and complexity to rock lyrics and freed Bruce Springsteen, Joni Mitchell and countless other artists to break out from the once-narrow boundaries of love and dance songs.

Dylan already was the only rock star to receive a Pulitzer Prize (an honorary one), and is, in fact, an author, too: He was nominated for a National Book Critics Circle prize for his memoir, “Chronicles: Volume One.” He is the first American to win the Nobel literature prize since Morrison in 1993, and his award probably hurts the chances of such older American writers as Philip Roth and Don DeLillo, since the Nobel judges try to spread the honors around.

NEW YORK – Bob Dylan, Nobel laureate. In the book world’s equivalent of a Supreme Court ruling, the Nobel judges declared Thursday that Dylan is not just a rock star but a poet of the very highest order.

Dylan, 75, becomes the first musician in the 115-year history of the Nobel to win the prize in literature. He was honored for “having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.”

It is the ultimate ascension for the man who set off a lasting debate over whether lyrics, especially rock lyrics, can be regarded as art. Dylan, who gave the world “Like a Rolling Stone,” “Blowin’ in the Wind” and dozens of other standards, now finds himself on a list that includes Samuel Beckett, Toni Morrison and T.S. Eliot, whom Dylan referred to in his epic song “Desolation Row.” “Congratulations to one of my favorite poets, Bob Dylan, on a well-deserved Nobel,” tweeted President Barack Obama, who in 2012 presented the singer-songwriter with a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Dylan rarely gives interviews, and a representative said the star had no

immediate comment. He is on tour and was scheduled to play Thursday night in Las Vegas.

The startling announcement out of Stockholm was met with both euphoria and dismay.

Many fans already quote Dylan as if he were Shakespeare, there are entire college courses and scholarly volumes devoted to his songs, and judges work Dylan quotations into their legal opinions all the time, such as “The times they are a-changing” and “You don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.”

With this year’s Nobel announcement, many people, especially Americans, weren’t scratching their heads and asking “Who?!” the way they did after hearing the names of such winners as Patrick Modiano and J.M.G. Le Clézio.

Others, however, lamented a lost moment for books.

“An ill-conceived nostalgia award wrenched from the rancid prostates of senile, gibbering hippies,” wrote “Trainspotting” novelist Irvine Welsh.

“I totally get the Nobel committee,” tweeted author Gary Shteyngart.

Nigeria: 21 abducted Chibok schoolgirls are freed in swap The ASSOCIATED PRESS MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – Twenty-one of the Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram more than two years ago were freed Thursday in a swap for detained leaders of the Islamic extremist group – the first release since nearly 300 girls were taken captive in a case that provoked international outrage.

The freed girls, some carrying babies, were released before dawn and placed in the custody of the Department of State Services, Nigeria’s secret intelligence agency. In photos released by the government, the former captives, most now young women, appeared gaunt and exhausted. The government “wants the girls to have some rest,” said presidential spokesman Garba Shehu, adding that “all of them are very tired.”

Some 197 captives remain missing, although some reportedly have died.

“We are extremely delighted and grateful,” said the Bring Back Our Girls movement, which campaigned in Nigeria and internationally for the release of the girls, most of whom were teenagers when they were seized in April 2014

from their school in the northeastern town of Chibok.

“We thank the federal government and, like Oliver Twist, we ask for more,” said Hauwa Biu, an activist in Maiduguri, the capital of northeastern Borno state and the birthplace of Boko Haram.

The release was negotiated between the government and Boko Haram, with the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Swiss government acting as intermediaries, Shehu said. He said negotiations would continue for the release of the other students.

Many of the girls freed Thursday were carrying babies, said an aid worker who saw them in Maiduguri, where they were taken by helicopter after their release, before being flown to the capital, Abuja. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media. The government said at least one child, a boy of about 20 months, was among those released. Many Boko Haram captives recently freed by military action have been shunned by their communities because they came home pregnant or with babies from the fighters.

Work to head off more bloodshed in DeKalb neighborhood

Residents’ description of their neighborhood in the 800 block of Kimberly Drive should cause us all to sit up and pay attention.

The morning after 25-year-old Debrece Shields was gunned down in a parking lot behind the building at 810 Kimberly, several people who live in the area told Daily Chronicle reporters Rhonda Gillespie and Stephanie Markham that gunshots were nothing out of the ordinary for that part of DeKalb.

“We’ve been here for over a year – there’s always gunshots,” said Brenna McCormick, a 22-year-old senior at Northern Illinois University. “It’s not like as bad as Chicago, but it’s still present.”

Amanda Brown, a 23-year-old senior at NIU, said it’s “always something on this block.”

“Either somebody shooting or always a fight,” she said.

“So I kinda just try to ignore it.”

Matthew Shless, 24, said he heard the gunshots that killed Shields. He said he hears gunfire in the area “five, six times a week.”

“I’m not concerned for myself,” he said. “But every single day, there’s kids around here playing.”

On Saturday, there was an impromptu memorial for Shields. A day after the man was shot to death, someone fired gunshots in the air in his honor. DeKalb Police Chief Gene Lowery said that didn’t faze anyone who was there.

If you live in DeKalb or Sycamore, this area is not more than 10 miles from your home, but the reality that residents there describe might seem like a world away.

We are concerned about gunplay and fighting being the norm in any neighborhood. Guns have one purpose – to kill – and when people use them indiscriminately, tragedy follows.

Shields’ killing is a tragedy. Regardless of his history, or the disagreements he might have had with his killers, he should have had a lot of life left to live.

Just as sad, an 18-year-old man, David Walls of Chicago, is one of two people accused of first-degree murder in the crime. Police said Walls fired the shot that killed Shields. If convicted, Walls would spend decades in prison, languishing in the prime of his life, only to emerge as a middle-age convicted murderer with no job experience.

There is nothing that makes any of this worth it.

A concerted effort also is necessary to get some of the guns off the street in this neighborhood. If gunshots continue to be a part of daily life, it will not be long before the next person is shot, and possibly killed. As Shless said, there are children playing in the area all the time.

The task is not insurmountable – the area is not so large that police cannot effectively cover it. But the danger is more dire than many of us might have realized.

Police and city officials should look to work cooperatively with those in the neighborhood and community advocates in order to improve police response to gunfire and other crime before there is further pointless bloodshed.

Since Trump video, ‘This has become so personal’

Twenty-year-old Hana Barkowitz had never before had this reaction to a stranger’s T-shirt.

“I really wanted to say something,” she told me Wednesday. “This has become so personal for me.”

On Friday, The Washington Post released a 2005 video capturing Donald Trump admitting on a live microphone that he is a sexual predator.

He was talking to Billy Bush, who was then working for “Access Hollywood” and has just been fired from NBC’s “Today” show. In the video, they were chuckling it up before Trump’s cameo appearance on the soap opera “Days of Our Lives.”

“You know, I’m automatically attracted to beautiful. I just start kissing them,” Trump said. “It’s like a magnet.

Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything – grab them by the p----. You can do anything.”

The video went viral in the time it took us to draw our collective breath.

When Barkowitz first heard about it, she resisted watching.

“I thought, ‘2005? That’s a long time ago.’ But so many were talking about it that I finally decided to watch it.”

She was stunned.

Barkowitz is no political neophyte. A native of Pittsburgh, she grew up talking politics and currently is president of Kent State’s College Democrats. I first met her during a panel discussion on campus, after I started teaching journalism there as a professional in residence.

She was standing with her Republican counterpart at the time, and they readily admitted to being friends.

She is a cup-runneth-over kind of activist. Her enthusiasm for politics – and life in general – leaves you feeling more optimistic than before you met her.

She is, by her own admission, sometimes confrontational about issues that concern her. That’s a long list.

Last weekend was different, however.

Barkowitz and a friend had decided to drive to a popular flea market in Cleveland. For the first half-hour or so, she enjoyed the respite from a long week.

Then she saw the white man in his

50s wearing the Trump shirt.

“I really wanted to say something,” she said. “I wanted to say to him, ‘How dare you? How dare you wear that shirt?

You’re a white man. What Trump says doesn’t affect you at all. You will never know what this feels like. You’re so lucky.’ ” Instead, she said nothing, after her friend pleaded with her to resist.

“She said, ‘Please don’t. What could he possibly say to make you feel better?’

And she was right.”

Still, it weighs on her, which I found out Wednesday after running into her on campus. She sounded like so many young women I’ve talked to this week, many of whom never before have cared much about politics. They can’t believe this guy is running for president or that anyone openly would admit to supporting him.

“I wouldn’t want to vote for someone with whom I wouldn’t feel safe in a room,” Barkowitz said.

Trump has dismissed his comments as “locker room talk.” On Wednesday, Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James shut that down in an interview after practice: “What is locker room talk to me? It’s not what that guy said. We don’t disrespect women in no shape or fashion in

our locker rooms. That never comes up. ...

I got a mother-in-law, a wife, a mom and a daughter, and those conversations just don’t go on in our locker room. ... What that guy was saying, that’s not – I don’t know what that is. That’s trash talk.”

For months now, I’ve been trying to understand some of our fellow Americans who support Trump, the champion of racism, xenophobia and misogyny. We should not judge them, the pollsters and pundits say. We should get to the heart of what is really bothering them. They have their reasons for being so angry.

Well, you know what? Hana Barkowitz and so many young women like her are angry, too, and they have their reasons. They are coming of age as a major presidential candidate ramps up misogyny, aided and abetted by the cowardice of Republican politicians who continue to support an admitted sexual predator in his quest to be the leader of our country.

I’m done trying to understand these Trump supporters. Barkowitz is right.

They’ll never know how this feels. And they don’t care.

NBC News’ handling of Trump video doesn’t add up Although it seems like an eternity, it’s been less than a week since a video from 2005 featuring Donald Trump rocked the political world.

Now, the candidate’s boast about his ability to sexually assault women has opened a floodgate of credible allegations. Trump’s presidential ambitions may well be dead in the water.

What if that campaign-changing video had emerged during the Republican presidential primary, instead of sitting on a shelf at NBC’s “Access Hollywood”?

And why did it take NBC News so long to break a story that took The Washington Post only five hours, from initial tip to publication?

Mark Kornblau, a spokesman for NBC News’ chairman, Andrew Lack, gave me some answers in a phone interview but left some unanswered.

Q. When did NBC News learn about the video?

A. Not until Monday of last week, Kornblau said, when Noah Oppenheim, executive producer of the “Today” show, first learned of it. As it turned out, however, having the revelations out before the debate made a huge difference. Moderator Anderson Cooper pressed Trump repeatedly about whether he actually had ever done what he was bragging about – groping women without their consent – and Trump said no. He said it was just locker room banter.

Now, women have come out in droves, and, if even some of them are telling the truth, Trump was lying.

Q. Why hadn’t NBC done a rigorous search of its own archives months ago?

A. Kornblau drew the distinction between news and entertainment sides of the corporation, saying that the news division had indeed scoured its own archives, for example, from “Meet the Press,” turning up stories along the way.

But he said, what “Access Hollywood” has in its files “is not NBC News’ archive.” But it certainly was newsworthy.

DAILY CHRONICLE Researcher, oral historian and filmmaker Abbie Reese is coming to Sycamore to present the program, “Monastic Silence and a Visual Dialogue: Life Among the Poor Clare Colettine Nuns.”

Through photographs, audio and video, Reese will share aspects of the hidden monastic life, the nuns’ motivations, and their internal journeys in this Illinois Humanities Council program.

Her collaborative film-in-progress, “Chosen,” will tell the story of a 27-year-old former blogger and painter who is now a cloistered nunin-training.

Reese’s presentation will examine

the self-selected subculture of cloistered contemplative nuns, which is facing the possibility of extinction. It will introduce individual nuns, such as “Sister Nicolette,” who considered becoming a pilot or airline attendant.

“Claustrophobic in an elevator” and proficient in Latin, Sister Nicolette worried when she first felt called, since “cloister” shares the same root as “claustrophobia.”

The Poor Clare Colettines regard their enclosure – which one nun’s 4-year-old great niece described as “the Jesus cage” – as a source of freedom rather than confinement. It keeps the world out so that they can devote themselves more fully to interceding on behalf of the world. Thus, this presentation addresses deeply human questions about personal and group identity and about relationships among individuals, communities and society.

The program is free and open to the public. It is made possible through the generosity of the Illinois Humanities Council.

DAR is a nonprofit, nonpolitical women’s volunteer service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education.

The DHS Band Parents Organization has been coordinating a separate companion trip that will allow parents and band enthusiasts to support the Marching Barbs in all their Emerald Isle appearances in March. Fewer than 20 tour spots remain in the companion trip.

Deadline to register is Oct. 24. Travel opportunities will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis based on online registration and payment of deposit and other trip payments.

Companions will travel with Gateway Travel, the same tour company arranging the trip for DHS band students and staff. Father-son duo has Hiawatha on cusp of playoffs Hawks expected to get 6th win by forfeit Friday to seal first berth since ’87

ecarifio@shawmedia.com KIRKLAND – Nathan Watson has played many different roles when it comes to the Hiawatha football team – player, alumni, coach, father.

Right now, all of them are proud.

The Hawks (5-2) are set to pick up their sixth win Friday against Rockford Christian Life, which has been forfeiting games and instead playing eight-man scrimmages games against scheduled opponents, Hiawatha coach Jason Keneway said.

The six wins will guarantee the Hawks their first playoff berth since 1987.

Watson played on the 1987 team. Now he’s not only a volunteer coach on the first team to make the playoffs since, he’s also the father of the team’s top offensive weapon, senior receiver/running back Braden Watson.

“As a dad, I’m proud of him,” Nathan Watson said. “As a coach and an alumni, I’m proud of everyone. It’s great to finally see them get to where they want to go.”

Keneway, now 24, also has a close relationship with “Coach,” as he still calls Nathan Watson, who was his coach at the junior high level starting in 2003.

Keneway was on the 2009 team that

won five games. That was his senior year, and again Watson was an assistant. That team ended up missing out on a playoff berth.

“We thought we had it then, and it was a huge letdown that year,” Nathan Watson said. “We felt we had everything we needed that year, but we didn’t. That was a huge disappointment. But now we’ve got it kind of locked up, and I think these kids are hungry for more.”

Keneway said practically no one has been a bigger influence on him than the elder Watson.

“Next to all of our parents, he’s the biggest influence of all our lives,” Keneway said. “He started coaching when I was in the fifth grade, and I started playing in the sixth grade. He was with us from sixth, seventh, eighth, all the way up.

“A lot of the stuff I do, and I know, is directly from him,” he said. “I couldn’t do as good as a job without him behind me.

He’s the guy I look to when I need an opinion on something. Coach has the ability to make everything OK. No matter what the situation is, he has this very calming effect. You know he’s got your back no matter what happens.”

Nathan Watson said there are lots of differences between this year’s squad and

past teams. He said one of the most pronounced is its determination not to fail, something on display last week in a 24-21 win over Westminster Christian on a late field goal.

“That was something that was evident last Friday,” Nathan Watson said. “On the last drive, they just went down and did what they needed to do. That’s one of the things we’ve always talked about it.

You want to have yourself in a position to win the game in the fourth quarter.”

He said it’s been a big turn-around from a team that went winless from 200305, and won six total games from 2001-06.

“For a while there the teams struggled, they knew they were going to struggle, and it was an accepted thing,” Nathan Watson said. “It’s been working towards accepting you’re not going to lose anymore. One of the things I always said is ‘Expect to win, be shocked to lose,’ that kind of a thing. ... You shouldn’t go into a game hoping to win. You should go into a game expecting to win.”

For Keneway, who played quarterback and safety for the Hawks, the likely playoff berth helps make up for the 2009 experience and accomplishes something he’s been gunning for a very long time.

“Since I was a freshman in high

school, I was dreaming about this,” Keneway said. “Now I get to see it from a different avenue, but it’s all still pretty surreal right now. Seeing the community this weekend was great and all the support was awesome. But the best part is we’re not done yet.”

Braden Watson has rushed for 672 yards and seven carries this year as the workhorse of the team’s offense. Although he hasn’t been around since the 1980s like his dad or 2003 like his coach, he said he’s just as hungry to get the Hawks back into the postseason.

“It’s my one goal,” Braden Watson said. “I always wanted to get to playoffs.

I didn’t want that ’87 team to be the only ones to make it. I want to put my mark on Hiawatha history.”

Of course, there’s still two weeks to the season left and the possibility the team could go 7-2 – after Christian Life, they host Luther North, a team that lost, 56-28, to Westminster Christian.

“As happy as I am we made it, there’s still more to do,” Keneway said. “We have full expectations to win (against Luther).

That’s our senior night at home, and these guys get fired up whenever they play at home. They elevate to another level they’ve never played at before.”

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – DeKalb and Kaneland couldn’t string enough together to take the lead in what played out to be a tie 1-1 final score on Thursday night.

DeKalb (7-8-3) and Kaneland (812-1) both saw a handful of scoring chances, but just a few of those runs posed a threat for the opposing team at Senior Night in DeKalb. At the halftime buzzer, Kaneland finished with just one shot on goal and DeKalb finished with two but one resulted in a goal by Tristan Bujarski to put the Barbs ahead by a goal with just over 10 minutes left to play in the half.

“I just blasted it and fell to my feet,” Bujarski said. “I aimed for the upper corner and it ended up going in. It’s massively important to score first. I think we did what we could in the beginning of the game but we can never finish which lead to mistakes.”

The second half again saw possession being won and lost back and forth between the teams with scoring chances sprinkled in but only a few that looked promising. DeKalb finished the half with four shots on goal to Kaneland’s two. The Knights finally got on the board with 27:06 left to play after Brian Bartholomew tied the game.

“I think it’s just my confidence going into it,” Roose said.“Going into the end, seeing someone that close to you, it helps you push through to the finish.”

South Elgin coach Dee McDermott said her team must continue to keep working hard, especially after being bitten by the injury bug.

“We’re still trying to really combine both schools,” McDermott said.

“Coming together as a team when you’re two schools is tough sometimes, but we’re in a better place than when we started. Fundamentally, we need to work on getting off of the blocks on our starts better. Today, we had a couple of girls really improve their times a lot so that is a step in the right direction.”

One of McDermott’s swimmers battling injury is Geneva junior Kelly Baughman. Baughman’s injury is not one that is commonly associated with athletics. She is battling vocal

cord dysfunction, which is the the abnormal closing of the vocal cords when breathing in or out. The condition affects her breathing while she competes.

“It’s definitely been difficult and frustrating,” Baughman said. “The last 25 is the hardest part right now.

I’m gonna keep on working through this.”

South Elgin senior Shianne Brewer is anxious to see not only her times, but those of her teammates improve as the clock winds down on her high school swimming career.

“I want to see the whole team improve,” Brewer said. “I want to complete the goals I set for myself and I want to see my teammates reach their goals. We’ve been working so hard at them.”

DeKalb travels Saturday to Sterling for the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference meet. The first race starts at 11 a.m.

DeKalb’s Freeman makes second state tournament Barbs golfer missed most of season because of injury

ecarifio@shawmedia.com Austin Freeman took fourth at the Class 3A Guilford Regional, and followed it up with a 12th-place showing at the Harlem Sectional.

Considering those were his first two tournaments in almost two months, it makes his run to the Class 3A State Tournament all the more impressive, which begins Friday at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington.

Three other local golfers will tee off for a state title Friday – Emma Carpenter will tee of at 9:42 at Hickory Point Golf Club in Decatur in the Class 2A Girls State Tournament, while Kaneland teammates Jake Hed

and Brett Glennon will be at Wiebring Golf Club at Illinois State University.

Hed tees off at 10 a.m., with Glennon starting 27 minutes later. Freeman tees off at 9:51 a.m. in the 3A tournament.

Freeman shot a 74 at the regional, only one stroke of the trio who tied for first.

“The one thing I couldn’t do is putt,” Freeman said. “It was definitely tough. The main thing was that I was rusty, but I think overall I played well for not having played for that long.”

He then shot a 76 in Machesney Park, three strokes behind the two golfers who tied for the low score.

Freeman said he did not notice

much of a difference with his injured wrist between the two tournaments.

“I maybe made one or two more mistakes,” Freeman said. “But basically, it was still rust for not having played in so long.”

Heading into Friday’s state meet, Freeman said there is a marked improvement in how his wrist is feeling.

“I feel really good, and the wrist has definitely healed better, better than it was at regionals,” Freeman said. “I have lot of confidence going into state and I just want to play my game and have fun.”

He said the first goal is to win a state title, but said that after sitting out most of the season it’s just good to be on the course again.

“It was definitely not what I planned on going into the season,” Freeman said. “It was tough to watch.

I couldn’t wait to get back.”

DEKALB – The DeKalb-Sycamore co-op girls swim team nearly swept Thursday’s dual meet with the South Elgin-Geneva co-op, 111-57.

The only two events that the team didn’t win, the 200-yard freestyle and the 200 individual medley, were won

by South Elgin by a combined 1.7 seconds.

After a hard fought and closely contested meet with IMSA on Tuesday, DeKalb coach Melanie Chambers said it was nice to see the girls rebound so well despite a quick turnaround.

“It is nice to get a big win after swimming a meet two days ago,” Chambers said. “I think our biggest area of growth so far this season is our diversity. Our versatility is huge for us. To be able to take girls and ask them to swim in an event that isn’t what they normally swim and have

them compete and win is great. There are four or five girls on our team that can do that and it’s because of their personal experience in the water.”

One of those versatile swimmers is Sycamore junior Sarah Hein. Hein usually swims the 200 medley and the 100 butterfly. Thursday , she swam the 100 and 50 freestyle events, winning both.

“It’s pretty hard switching strokes,” Hein said. “Our coaches really prepare us for an all-around stroke. It’s hard, but not impossible with the coaches we have.”

Another one of Chambers’ Swiss army knives of the water is DeKalb junior Elissa Roose. She normally swims the 100 butterfly and the 500 freestyle. While she did swim and win the 100 butterfly, she did not compete in the 500 freestyle. Instead, she swam and won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:05.02, beating South Elgin’s Carly McGuire by .45 of a second.

Rotation ready to deliver

CHICAGO – One of the big reasons the Cubs are favored to plow through the postseason field and make history this month is by sheer force and innings from the top-performing rotation in baseball.

Maybe next series.

If the Cubs’ series victory over the Giants in the first round suggested anything about the Cubs high-performance rotation it might be that it should have more in the tank as the postseason shifts to lengthier, seven-game series with Saturday’s National League Championship opener at Wrigley Field.

The only starter to earn a victory in the series was Jon Lester, who pitched eight scoreless innings in that opener, and who takes the mound in Saturday’s NLCS opener as well.

Only one of the three others pitched more than four innings, with Jake Arrieta pitching six strong and hitting a homer in Monday’s 13-inning loss.

But don’t make the mistake of discounting this group going forward, said Hall of Fame pitcher John Smoltz. It’s a championship-caliber rotation, said the playoff broadcaster who pitched in five World Series for the pitching-rich Atlanta Braves during his 22-year career.

“When Jake Arrieta’s slotted third, that’s all you need to know,” Smoltz said. “He is by far one of the scariest pitchers to face when it comes to all his elements working in unison.”

The Cubs haven’t announced the order of their rotation for the NLCS beyond Lester. Part of the reason was to await Kyle Hendricks’ status the next morning after throwing a bullpen session Thursday, five days after he was knocked out of Game 2 in the fourth inning by a line drive off his forearm.

What seemed clear was that the Cubs

will need – and expect – more from Hendricks and October ace John Lackey, who wasn’t sharp Tuesday in his first start in more than two weeks, to reach their first World Series in 71 years.

“I have a lot of faith in our guys,” said manager Joe Maddon, who attributed Lackey’s issues in Game 4 to the long layoff. “They’ve been doing it all year.

They’re absolutely rested going into this moment. So I feel very strongly about our starting pitching.”

So, apparently, does Smoltz, who raved about the balance of styles in the rotation, including Hendricks’ mastery without an overpowering fastball and Lackey’s experience that includes starts in two World Series clinchers.

“They’ve dominated in the era of baseball that is looking to hit the ball out of the ballpark, no contact, and this is the way we play now,” Smoltz said.

“So they’ve maximized the ability to be the cream of the crop.”

That rotation is one of only four since 1990 to produce an ERA under 3.00 (2.96).

Smoltz’s Braves in 1992 – the year before Greg Maddux went from Chicago to Atlanta – was the first of that foursome.

And, yes, he said, they were that much better than anybody else in the majors – eye test as much as stats.

“The Giants are close,” he said, citing their trading-deadline addition of Matt Moore, who pitched so well against the Cubs for eight innings Tuesday.

“But [the Cubs] have the perfect blend.

“The difference for me this year – besides the emergence of Kyle Hendricks – is when they got John Lackey, you could say that singlehandedly might have been the separator between the Cardinals and the Cubs.

“People don’t understand the veteran leadership and the ability to depend on a guy like that in the postseason,” he added. “If any hiccups happen, they’ve got John Lackey. Pitching fourth.”

WEEK 8 FOOTBALL PREVIEW CAPSULES Yorkville Foxes at No. 6 DeKalb Barbs Time: 7 p.m. today, DeKalb Records: Foxes 1-6 overall, 0-3 Northern Illinois Big 12 East; Barbs 6-1, 3-0 Last week: Yorkville gave up a late touchdown and two-point conversion in a 21-14 loss at home to Sycamore. The Barbs rolled to their first shutout of the year, 42-0, at Ottawa.

Last meeting: The Barbs won, 28-21, last year in Yorkville.

Scouting the Foxes: They couldn’t hang on late against a resurgent Sycamore team and suffered their fourth one-possession loss of the year. Only a pair of 7-0 teams have blown out the Foxes this year – West Aurora (33-3) and Sterling (41-0) – and both of those games, like this one, is away from Yorkville and on turf.

“DeKalb is always a tough place to play with their turf, and that’s a huge homefield advantage for them,” Yorkville coach Dan McGuire said. “We’ve got to embrace those things and know that going in, limit our mistakes and know what we’re supposed to do.”

In the close games, the Foxes have had late leads in all of them only to fall short.

“Honestly, this is probably one of the best teams we’ve played against, even with a 1-6 record,” DeKalb coach Matt Weckler said. “They’re big and they’re physical, and they’ve always played us very, very tough.”

Last week, Yorkville’s Brandon Lee and Austin Avery had the bulk of the carries.

Avery had 11 carries for 66 yards while Lee was held to 30 yards on 12 carries. Neither got in the end zone – Jason Lewan had a 54-catch and run of a midrange pass from Ty Liaromatis, while Liaromatis ran for the other.

“They’re big and physical up front, and their forte is pounding the ball between the tackles,” Weckler said. “They get a good push up front, they run some unbalanced line and multiple backfield formats.

If you can’t stop the point of attack, they’ll move the ball right at you.”

What’s at stake: DeKalb tries to improve its playoff positioning with a tough game against undefeated Sterling lurking in Week 9. According the the IHSA playoff outlook, the Barbs are 10th in Class 6A and are smack dab in the middle of the 12 teams that are 6-1.

The Barbs’ Delvin Williams continued to put up good numbers since taking over as starting halfback, rushing for 92 yards and a score on just nine carries in the win over the Pirates. He’s up to 332 yards and five touchdowns on 58 carries. Cole Tucker added his eighth TD reception of the year last week, and is up to 30 catches and 473 yards. He and Zuerek Day have caught all of Derek Kyler’s area-leading 12 touchdown passes this year.

“Defensively, they’re always well coached, and offensively, they run a good scheme,” McGuire said. “They’ve got some very good athletes. They always have speed too, so all those things present a lot of challenges.”

What else can I try?

Dear Reader: Seasonal allergies can cause sinus congestion, sneezing and a runny nose. But when you experience pain and pressure in your head, it might be time to consider other causes. That’s because sinus problems usually do not cause headaches.

At least, they don’t cause what most people refer to when they use the term “headache.” Most people with sinus congestion refer to “head congestion,” not headache.

I spoke to my Harvard Medical School colleague Dr. William Kormos. He said if you’re regularly experiencing headaches with nasal congestion, you might have migraine headaches. That’s because migraines can cause sinus pressure and clear discharge, just as they can cause the eyes to get red and teary.

People with migraine headaches often are misdiagnosed with sinus problems.

That might be because many people don’t associate sinus pain and pressure with migraine headaches. In fact, more than 80 percent of migraine sufferers report sinus pain and pressure. Half also experience nasal congestion or a runny nose. To add to the confusion, weather changes are common migraine triggers. So your migraines might follow a pattern you associate with – and mistake for – seasonal allergies.

A doctor should be able to diagnose the type of headaches you are experiencing.

He or she will make the diagnosis based on an accurate, detailed description of your symptoms. For example, nausea, vomiting or sensitivity to light or sound are clues your pain is related to migraines.
