DeKALB COUNTY LIFE Barry Schrader The kickoff of the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s 40th season Saturday night was a blockbuster.

If you were one of the fortunate 400 people in the Boutell Concert Hall, I don’t need to tell you that the guest performer – young Emily Bear, a renowned pianist/composer/ songwriter, was spellbinding with her performance and delightful personality.

She exuded enthusiasm and displayed her boundless energy and talent unequalled at any of the past concerts I have attended.

Seated at the front of the stage at the grand piano, the 15-year-old prodigy played three of her own compositions, written for the full orchestra.

The first was “Santa Fe,” produced when she was 10 years old, then “The Bravest Journey,” which she composed and orchestrated at 13.

The third, “Les Voyages,” completed at age 12, earned her the ASCAP 2015 Young Composer of the Year Award. For her grand finale on stage she played George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” like I’ve never heard it before.

You could tell that conductor Linc Smelser and the 85-piece orchestra were thrilled to be performing with her. Their performance was stellar.

Many in the audience had not read of her accomplishments – making her professional debut at the Ravinia Festival at age 5; then at age 6 she was the youngest rising star to receive the Morton Gould Young composer award.

Orchestras the world over have been performing her brilliant compositions ever since.

Bear has appeared at the Lincoln Center, the Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, Ravinia and at the White House.

Her concerts have attracted large, adoring audiences across America and throughout Europe and Asia.

She was recently commissioned to arrange her own composition to be performed by 25 pianists at the same time.

The list of her TV appearances is too long to detail here.

Known primarily as a classical artist, she also has a love for jazz. Her young talent

Jones said of her: “She is the most delightful human being I’ve ever met in my life. … I am at once astounded and inspired by the enormous talent that Emily embodies. … She plays like she is 40 years old. … There are no limits to the musical heights she can reach.”

It is interesting to learn she was raised in nearby Rockford, where she is homeschooled by her mother.

Her talent was first recognized when she was 2 by her grandmother, who is an accomplished pianist in her own right.

Emily’s next appearance will be Nov. 19, when she performs in honor of her mentor Quincy Jones at the Los Angeles Society Tribute to him in Hollywood.

It was exciting to see and hear her up close Saturday night in DeKalb.

She ended the evening signing copies of her CDs for concertgoers who were also enjoying slices of a large 40th anniversary cake.

Crews begin demolition of a longtime DeKalb eyesore On the Web

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – It was demolition Day 1 for a now-infamous property in DeKalb, as crews started shortly after dawn Wednesday to tear down dilapidated and contaminated structures on the site where Protano Auto Parts store once operated.

Several people who recalled the heyday of the former family-owned auto parts and salvage shop at 1151 S. Fourth St. pulled up Wednesday to witness the bulldozing of the vacant buildings that have blighted the area for years.

“It’s about time they tore them down,” Pat Hickey said about the store and two houses on the property.

He and his wife, Ann, parked their truck on Charter Street, facing the buildings, and they watched as a bulldozer knocked down the four-bedroom frame house adjacent to the right side of the shop. With coffee in hand, the couple reminisced about the days when Pat lived nearby and the auto salvage business was operational.

“It’s good to get [the demolition] done for our community,” Ann Hickey said. “It’s just awful to have that sitting here. It’s been there for years.”

About 7:30 a.m., DeKalb public works officials showed up at the 2-acre property with workers from Wagner Excavating to start the teardown. The DeKalb-based company was awarded the no-bid contract for the job, and then hired Cortland-based D.C. Trash to provide the metal dumpsters for the debris and to haul it away.

City officials said Wagner Excavating was paid about $16,000 for the work. The first day included removing the frame house.

By late afternoon Wednesday, one bulldozer still was scooping up wood slats and other rubbish.

“The plan is to take the cinder

block ... and crunch it up or pulverize all that concrete block and put it in the basement of the wooden structure,” DeKalb Public Works Director Tim Holdeman said. “That way

we don’t have to haul all that cinder block to another location. And it keeps it out of the landfill.”

The city purchased the property in February 2015 from DeKalb County. The owners had let the business and the property languish and owed as much as $100,000 in back taxes, according to county tax data. Additionally, environmental studies showed the structures had asbestos and the soil was contaminated with lead.

Holdeman said dirt brought in from another site would be poured over the crushed cinder blocks. After the structures are removed, remaining brush will be cleared, trees cut down to the stump and tires and other junk on the property will be removed by city workers, Holdeman said.

He said all of the work has to be done in a way that doesn’t disturb the polluted soil.

The public works director said that the demolition is the first step in the city’s plan to prepare the property to be sold.

“Visually, it’s going to be a lot more pleasant, a lot better aesthetically,” Holdeman said. “But ultimately, we want ... to get that site back to where it can be purchased by the next user.”

Rick Sipes said he worked for 13 years at the auto parts store and had lived in both houses. He stood for a while across the street from the site and watched as the place where he spent several hours a day removing parts from junked cars was demolished.

“I hate to see it go, but it’s in bad shape,” he said. “It needed to be torn down.”

DeKalb seeks to demolish Otto’s building

DeKALB – The city is seeking a court order to have the former Otto’s Nightclub building repaired or demolished because it is an “imminent threat to public health, safety and welfare,” according to a new lawsuit.

The building at the corner of Lincoln Highway and First Street has been closed since heat failure caused a pipe to burst in 2014 and the city declared it uninhabitable.

Owner Pat Looney cut off communication with city officials regarding plans to fix structural and sanitation issues, including deteriorated walls, roof and drainage system and the presence of mold and asbestos, according to the complaint filed Tuesday.

A phone number for Looney could not be located Wednesday.

Mayor John Rey said the city will not demolish the building if Looney agrees to make the necessary repairs.

“It is my understanding that the owner is nonresponsive with requests to bring it up to code,” the mayor said.

Rey said that if the court grants the city request and Looney doesn’t take responsibility, the building would likely be demolished because of how it has been affecting nearby structures.

“I hope the building is dealt with one way or another,” Rey said.

The lawsuit said that the property’s decline has caused problems in surrounding buildings, such as water leaks, and it has gotten to a point that “it is no longer possible to tolerate Looney’s complete failure to maintain his property.”

It also said the property is “an aesthetic blight upon the city” in addition to being a danger to public health.

National Bank & Trust Co., which has since been acquired by First Midwest Bank, filed a lawsuit against Looney in May for failing to maintain the property. A judge ordered Looney to pay the bank almost $470,000 in that case. City Attorney Dean Frieders said that once those named in it are served with the lawsuit, they will be able to

In the lawsuit, the city said it wants a judge to order Looney to either repair the building, tear it down or give the city permission to demolish the building if Looney won’t comply.

“If the owner acknowledges responsibility and renders the building safe, that would be the best outcome,” Frieders said. “If not, the city intends to bring forth a significant amount of evidence.”

The case is next due in court Jan. 6.

“It would be challenging to see them refute that in good faith, given the condition of the building,” he said.

Frieders said the city had exhausted all other options before filing the petition, which offers several options to restore the property to a safe condition.

“They are hopeful for a positive action,” he said. “The city didn’t have any option but to file this petition.”

DONNIE L. BEASLEY Born: December 23, 1937 Died: September 23, 2016

Donnie L. Beasley, age 78, passed away September 23, 2016 at Genesis West, Davenport, Iowa.

He was born on December 23, 1937 in Duncan, Kentucky the son of Hollie and Wanita (Kays) Beasley. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife, Dee; sons, Donnie (Patsy) Beasley, Danny (Bridget) Beasley, Steve (Shawn) Beasley; and one daughter, Christy Contrel; 12 grandchildren; sister, Betty Bailey; and brother, Ray Beasley.

Proceeded in death by his Mom and Dad; and brother, Johnnie.

There will be a gathering 4:00 to 8:00pm at the VFW in Sycamore, Saturday, October 15, 2016.

DUANE A. CHARLESWORTH Born: September 30, 1931 Died: October 2, 2016

Duane A. Charlesworth, 85, of Litchfield Park, Arizona, died unexpectedly on October 2 in an Arizona hospital.

He was born in Waterman, Illinois, on September 30, 1931 to Alfred and Alma (Zeiter) Charlesworth of rural Waterman, and brother to Olive Trumpour, Don, and Elaine McKirgan, all of whom are deceased.

He was baptized, confirmed, and educated at Immanuel Lutheran Church, in rural Hinckley, Illinois. Duane graduated from Waterman High School, class of 1949, and then served in the U.S. Air Force for four years.

Upon discharge, he enrolled in Northern Illinois University, always grateful for the G.I. Bill which enabled him to earn his Bachelor and Master Degrees in Business Education.

Duane began his teaching career in 1958 at Odell Community High School in Odell, Illinois, and after 6 years, relocated his family to Phoenix, Arizona.

He then taught for 26 years at Maryvale High School in Phoenix, and for many years at Glendale Community College in the evenings, retiring in 1991.

He was dedicated and committed as a public school educator providing excellence in his classroom and expected that of his students as well.

He was married for 64 years to Dolores (Moudy) of Waterman; and “Dad” to Greg (Deb), Michael, David (Didi), Julie (Gil) Garcia, and Karen (Ed) Reed, all living in the Phoenix area. He was grandfather to eight and great grandfather to nine; brother-in-law to Loretta (Moudy) Hipple, Richard Moudy and Jane Moudy, all of Sycamore, and Don (Bonnie) Moudy of rural Sandwich; and uncle to several nieces and nephews in Illinois.

Through the years, Duane coached Little

League teams, enjoyed hearing a good “Barbershop” chorus, built over 50 model airplanes, encouraged grandchildren at soccer and badminton games, and delighted in viewing sports of all kinds on his new TV screen.

Duane was present for the past 53 years every Sunday at his home church, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Phoenix. Indeed, his was a life “well lived”.

Memorial services were held on Sunday, October 9 at St. Paul with cremated remains to be interred at a later time.

Memorials may be given to his home church (St. Paul Lutheran Church, 6301 W. Indian School Road, Phoenix, Arizona 85033) or to the American Diabetes Association/ Camp AZDA (summer camp for Type 1 diabetic children), 5333 N. 7th Street, Suite B-212, Phoenix, Arizona 85014.

Kielhack had asked several friends if they wanted to take LSD that weekend and asked Montgomery if he knew anyone who could get the drugs. In turn, Montgomery contacted Quirke, who drove to DeKalb and gave LSD to Kielhack and others, including Montgomery, Caplan said “Kielhack admitted to taking and possessing LSD that evening. He stated that

the effects he felt that night were consistent with other nights that he had taken LSD,” Caplan said. “An autopsy was conducted on the body of Timi Okedina, and his blood was tested and LSD was found.”

Prosecutors initially charged all three men with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, which typically carries a sentence of four to 15 years in prison.

As part of a deal, prosecutors dropped the more serious charge and allowed Kielhack and Montgomery to plead guilty to a less serious charge. Prosecutors and

DeKALB – Two men charged with selling LSD to a Northern Illinois University student who later fell to his death from a dormitory window pleaded guilty to amended felony drug charges Wednesday as part of a deal with prosecutors.

Michael R. Kielhack, 21, of the 600 block of Woodbridge Drive in Elgin, and Michael Z. Montgomery, 20, of the 1800 block of Abriter Court in Naperville, pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance. The crime typically is punishable by one to three years in prison.

A third man charged in the case – Thomas P. Quirke, 20, of the 200 block of Oakhurst Drive in Aurora – is accused of selling the drugs to Northern Illinois University students before the death of 19-year-old NIU geology major Oluwarotimi “Timi” Okedina.

Okedina fell Sept. 26, 2015, from an 11th-floor window in a room at Stevenson Towers C building. Toxicology reports showed he had LSD and marijuana in his system when he died. Quirke, who entered a plea of not guilty in May, is next due in court Monday. After Okedina’s death, police investigators discovered that he and other students had taken LSD that night, according to a statement that

lawyers for Montgomery and Kielhack told DeKalb County Judge Robbin Stuckert that they were unable to reach an agreement on sentences for the two men.

At a sentencing hearing scheduled for Nov. 29, defense attorneys and prosecutors will make their arguments for an appropriate punishment, and the judge would sentence Montgomery and Kielhack. Both men plan to ask the judge to consider a form of probation that, if completed, would allow them to ask a court to remove the conviction from their records.

The probation would last two years.

Kielhack’s attorney, David Camic, said he planned to present information and evidence in mitigation that would allow the judge to consider a sentence of probation. He praised the efforts of prosecutors, including DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack, for their work in negotiating a deal.

Montgomery’s attorney, Bob Nolan, said his client was “peripheral” to the entire incident and that he’d also request the judge consider first-time offender probation.

Caplan declined to comment on the case while it was still pending, including on what sentence she would ask the judge to consider. Both Montgomery and Kielhack were NIU students at the time Okedina’s death, but are no longer students, NIU spokesman Joe King said.

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant resumed normal business hours Wednesday after a driver accidentally crashed her car through a front window the evening before.

The restaurant at 2466 Sycamore Road closed after the crash, but reopened at 11 a.m. and will continue regular hours of operation, according to a company statement.

Debris was cleared and a board covered the broken window Wednesday afternoon. Patrons could be seen dining in and carrying out food from the restaurant as usual.

Hours for the DeKalb location are 11 a.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

Shattered glass and debris were scattered about and three people were injured Tuesday when a Hyundai Elantra crashed through a group of windows near the restaurant’s hostess station.

The injured were treated for minor injuries, and the driver, 22-yearold Johnisha L. Harris of DeKalb, was charged with driving without a license and reckless driving, police said.

SPRINGFIELD – One of several startup newspapers tied to a conservative Illinois activist has been challenged in a federal complaint as a Republican mouthpiece, meaning it should count as a campaign contribution.

Kim Savage, a Democrat from the Chicago suburb of Darien, argues in a Federal Election Commission filing that the DuPage Policy Journal is not an independent newspaper, but instead is controlled by businessman and radio talk-show host Dan Proft through his political action committee, Liberty Principles PAC, which received a $2.5 million contribution in June from Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner.

The paper is one of 14 co-owned by Proft that appeared last spring before the state’s primary elections.

The complaint, filed last week in Washington, maintains that the DuPage Policy Journal is illegally coordinating with GOP congressional candidate Tonia Khouri and that its publication costs should be reported as political contributions in her race to unseat in-

Illinois gets extension on new federal ID requirements

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois is among 14 states that received a yearlong extension to comply with stricter federal requirements for driver’s licenses and identification cards.

The extension granted Wednesday means Illinois now has until Oct. 10, 2017, to comply with the 2005 Real ID act. It imposes tougher requirements for proof of legal U.S. residency in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

It contends that the DuPage paper is not entitled to a press exemption from campaign finance laws because it is run by a political organization, is not published regularly, is sent to doorsteps or left in high-traffic areas for free and includes “coordinated communications” with a candidate that the law bars for so-called independent expenditure committees.

Proft called the FEC complaint “factually incorrect in every possible way,” primarily because the papers are now owned by a private company called Local Government Information Services. “It’s a legitimate newspaper just like any other newspaper,” Proft told The Associated Press. “I’ll put the stories we do on politics and policy up against any other newspaper in the state.”

The FEC must seek a response from the targets of the complaints within 15 days, then review those and decide whether to investigate further. There’s

week that Republicans have spent $2 million on TV ads in a Chicago-area district, and that Democrats and Republicans combined have spent nearly $14 million on state legislative races overall.

GOP ads have linked Democrats to Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, who leads the state Democratic Party and has been in office for decades, the Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises newspapers reported.

Liberty Principles PAC, which Proft said is not participating in any federal races, was named in complaints about three of the newspapers – two in Chicago’s northern suburbs and one in downstate Cumberland County – filed during the primary election with the Illinois State Board of Elections. The papers were alleged to have improperly engaged in coordinating messages with legislative candidates and had not attributed their funding source.

2 arrested in theft of more than 50 guns in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD – Police said they have arrested two people after the theft of more than 50 guns from a Springfield firearms dealer.

The State Journal-Register reported that thieves kicked in the door at Letz Hunt and Sport on Sunday night. Police said the names of those arrested were not immediately released because the case is under investigation. Lt. Chris Mueller said more arrests are possible.

Officers were called Monday morning to the business, which is in a residential neighborhood on the city’s north end. Mueller said the firearms dealer had an alarm system but that it didn’t sound. A recording at the store said it is closed until Tuesday.

URBANA – A Champaign County judge has ruled there is enough evidence to hold a suspect in a shooting during a party last month near the University of Illinois campus that left one person dead.

Robbie Patton of Champaign is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of 22-year-old George Korchev of Mundelein and aggravated battery with a firearm in the wounding of three others.

Police said the shooting followed a disagreement over a spilled drink at a party that led to a fight. None of the four victims was involved in the fight.

Assistant State’s Attorney Scott Larson said eyewitnesses identified Patton as the shooter.

Judge Roger Webber set a pretrial hearing for Dec. 13.

Clinton reaching past Trump, as he denies report of assault

PUEBLO, Colo. – Brimming with new confidence, Hillary Clinton turned up the heat Wednesday on Republican candidates who are facing tight election races and tough decisions on what to do about Donald Trump. She’s now seeking to spread her new momentum to fellow Democrats on November ballots.

Are you with him or not? That is what Clinton and her campaign are demanding of GOP candidates as she surfs a wave of new support, part of the fallout from the revelations of Trump’s aggressive sexual comments about women.

Two newspapers, meanwhile, reported late Wednesday that Trump’s actions went beyond words.

The New York Times published interviews with two women who said they were touched inappropriately by the billionaire without their permission. The Times said Jessica Leeds, 74, of New York, told the newspaper she encountered Trump on an airline flight three decades ago. Leeds said Trump grabbed her breasts and tried to put his hand up her skirt.

“He was like an octopus,” she told the newspaper. “His hands were everywhere.”

Rachel Crooks of Ohio said she met Trump in 2005 at Trump Tower. Age 22 at the time, Crooks said, Trump kissed her “directly on the mouth” against her will.

Trump denied the accusations, telling the Times, “None of this ever took place.” His campaign spokesman, Jason Miller, called the story “a completely false, coordinated character assassination.”

Separately, The Palm Beach Post in Florida, reported Wednesday night that Mindy McGillivray, 36, told the newspaper that Trump groped her at his Mar-a-Lago estate 13 years ago. Trump’s campaign said her allegation “lacks any merit or veracity.”

And late Wednesday, People magazine reporter Natasha Stoynoff posted a story about a 2005 incident at Mar-a-Lago where, she wrote, Trump “was pushing me against the wall, and forcing his tongue down my throat.” The Trump campaign also said there was “no merit or veracity” to Stoynoff’s story.

The reports came at the end of a day on which two GOP senators and two House members who called for Trump to step aside over the weekend climbed back aboard. Their basic case: They’re voting for a Republican next month, and if Trump isn’t leaving then he’s got to be the one.

John Thune of South Dakota, the third-ranking Republican in the Senate, told the Rapid City Journal he had “reservations about the way [Trump] has conducted his campaign and himself.” However, he said, “I’m certainly not going to vote for Hillary Clinton.”

Also back on board after calling on Trump to resign are Sen. Deb Fischer of Nebraska and Reps. Scott Garrett of New Jersey and Bradley Byrne of Alabama. There still are about three dozen GOP lawmakers who have withdrawn support or are calling for Trump to step aside.

Trump kept up his unrelenting denunciations of Clinton at a rally in Florida. It’s not enough for voters to elect him instead of her, he declared – “She has got to go to jail.”

Later Wednesday, Clinton was campaigning in Las Vegas, where she planned to call out Rep. Joe Heck, a Republican in a tough Senate fight who revoked his support for Trump after hearing his caught-on-video boasts about groping women.

The focus on Republican congressional candidates is the latest sign the Clinton campaign is moving past a narrow focus on winning the White House, and now is aiming to win big – by delivering the Senate to Democrats, making deep cuts into the Republicans’ majority in the House and, possibly, winning states long considered Republican territory.

But there’s a growing problem in the northwest Iowa city of 11,000, one that’s familiar to rural areas around the country: Thousands of working families and elderly residents don’t have enough money to feed themselves or their children. The issue persists even as national poverty rates have declined in the past year and prices for many food staples have dropped slightly.

Storm Lake has responded strongly with a large, mostly volunteer effort to hand out free food – eggs, cereal, vegetables, juice – at a half-dozen pantries, along a city street and in an empty building on the edge of town.

“You struggle to live one day at a time, to stretch the budget,” said Hermelinda Gonzalez, 41, who relies on food from a monthly drive-up pantry to feed her seven children despite her husband’s construction job. “I don’t

While federal statistics show incomes among the poorest 10 percent of U.S. households increased 7.9 percent last year and the proportion of Americans in poverty dropped from 14.8 percent to 13.5 percent, small towns typically lag urban areas in job and income growth, especially in the Upper Midwest, said Gary Green, a University of Wisconsin-Madison professor who studies rural issues.

It’s especially hard for immigrants, he said, because the communities often lack a support network found in large cities, and if there’s an unexpected expense or reduction in work hours, there usually aren’t relatives nearby to help. That makes it hard for hunger issues to be solved in rural areas, Green said.

It all helps to explain why one pantry alone, Upper Des Moines Opportunity, provides food to about 3,200 people in Storm Lake and nearby communities.

“The shelves are as empty as I’ve ever seen it,” pantry worker Melissa Keller said.

Finding a job isn’t the problem in Storm Lake, which is hours from Des Moines and Minneapolis. It’s finding one that pays enough to cover the bills.

To the Electors of the State of Illinois: The Illinois Constitution establishes a structure for government and laws. There are three ways to initiate change to the Illinois Constitution: (1) a constitutional convention may propose changes to any part; (2) the General Assembly may propose changes to any part; or (3) a petition initiative may propose amendments limited to structural and procedural subjects contained in the Legislative Article. The people of Illinois must approve any changes to the Constitution before they become effective. The purpose of this document is to inform you of proposed changes to the Illinois Constitution and provide you with a brief explanation and a summary of the arguments in favor of and in opposition to the proposed amendment.

Proposed changes in the existing constitutional amendment are indicated by underscoring all new matter and by crossing with a line all matter which is to be deleted.

PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO ADD SECTION 11 TO ARTICLE IX OF THE ILLINOIS CONSTITUTION ARTICLE IX – REVENUE SECTION 11. TRANSPORTATION FUNDS (a) No moneys, including bond proceeds, derived from taxes, fees, excises, or license taxes relating to registration, title, or operation or use of vehicles, or related to the use of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, airports, or to fuels used for propelling vehicles, or derived from taxes, fees, excises, or license taxes relating to any other transportation infrastructure or transportation operation, shall be expended for purposes other than as provided in subsections (b) and (c). (b) Transportation funds may be expended for the following: the costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation, including statutory refunds and adjustments provided in those laws; payment of highway obligations; costs for construction, reconstruction, maintenance, repair, and betterment of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, airports, or other forms of transportation; and other statutory highway purposes. Transportation funds may also be expended for the State or local share of highway funds to match federal aid highway funds, and expenses of grade separation of highways and railroad crossings, including protection of at-grade highways and railroad crossings, and, with respect to local governments, other transportation purposes as authorized by law. (c) The costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation shall be limited to direct program expenses related to the following: the enforcement of traffic, railroad, and motor carrier laws; the safety of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, or airports; and the construction, reconstruction, improvement, repair, maintenance, operation, and administration of highways, under any related provisions of law or any purpose related or incident to, including grade separation of highways and railroad crossings. The limitations to the costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation under this subsection (c) shall also include direct program expenses related to workers’ compensation claims for death or injury of employees of the State’s transportation agency; the acquisition of land and the erection of buildings for highway purposes, including the acquisition of highway rights-of-way or for investigations to determine the reasonable anticipated future highway needs; and the making of surveys, plans, specifications, and estimates for the construction and maintenance of flight strips and highways. The expenses related to the construction and maintenance of flight strips and highways under this subsection (c) are for the purpose of providing access to military and naval reservations, defense-industries, defense-industry sites, and sources of raw materials, including the replacement of existing highways and highway connections shut off from general use at military and naval reservations, defense-industries, and defense-industry sites, or the purchase of rights-of-way. (d) None of the revenues described in subsection (a) of this Section shall, by transfer, offset, or otherwise, be diverted to any purpose other than those described in subsections (b) and (c) of this Section. (e) If the General Assembly appropriates funds for a mode of transportation not described in this Section, the General Assembly must provide for a dedicated source of funding. (f) Federal funds may be spent for any purposes authorized by federal law.

EXPLANATION The proposed amendment adds a new Section to the Revenue Article of the Illinois Constitution that provides revenue generated from transportation related taxes and fees (referred to as “transportation funds”) shall be used exclusively for transportation related purposes. Transportation related taxes and fees include motor fuel taxes, vehicle registration fees, and other taxes and user fees dedicated to public highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit (buses and rail), ports, or airports.

Under the proposed amendment, transportation funds may be used by the State or local governments only for the following purposes: (1) costs related to administering transportation and vehicle laws, including public safety purposes and the payment of obligations such as bonds; (2) the State or local share necessary to secure federal funds or for local government transportation purposes as authorized by law; (3) the construction, reconstruction, improvement, repair, maintenance, and operation of highways, mass transit, and railroad crossings; (4) expenses related to workers’ compensation claims for death or injury of transportation agency employees; and (5) to purchase land for building highways or buildings for to be used for highway purposes.

This new Section is a limitation on the power of the General Assembly or a unit of local government to use, divert, or transfer transportation funds for a purpose other than transportation. It does not, and is not intended to, impact or change the way in which the State and local governments use sales taxes, including the sales and excise tax on motor fuel, or alter home rule powers granted under this Constitution. It does not seek to change the way in which the State funds programs administered by the Illinois Secretary of State, Illinois Department of Transportation, and operations by the Illinois State Police directly dedicated to the safety of roads, or entities or programs funded by units of local government. Further, the Section does not impact the expenditure of federal funds, which may be spent for any purpose authorized by federal law.

Paul was a devoted father and husband. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force having served during the Vietnam War. In high school he set many records in track and field that have not been broken. Paul was an owner operator of his own trucking firm. He was a member of the Jubilee Christian Centre in Elgin and a former 4H member where he raised pigs. Paul was a marksman and loved dogs and horses.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; two sons, Paul (Nichol) Sharp III of Elgin, David A. Political class failures give rise to populism Whatever the outcome of November’s presidential election, one particular note should be apparent to political leaders going forward: Populism is alive and strong in American politics.

But it’s not unique to the United States this year; populism is trending globally.

There is an evident global frustration with those in the political class who are viewed to be out of touch with the average person. These folks are voting for what they believe will disrupt the political system and displace the establishment.

To that aim, 2016 has numerous examples: In the United Kingdom, voters surprisingly voted to exit the European Union in June. In May, the Philippines elected Rodrigo Duterte, a brash politician known for making cringe-worthy statements that often rightly inspire global condemnation.

And closer to home, Donald Trump’s presidential campaign has been built on tapping into populist frustrations of Americans who feel as though they are unrepresented, disenfranchised, left behind and poorly served by the American government. It was a similar populist sentiment that carried the Bernie Sanders campaign.

And now, even Hillary Clinton has recognized that some of the populist policies Sanders and Trump have floated are gaining traction, and she has assumed similar positions, specifically talking about trade and the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Populism has gone global this year and is a result of, in no small part, global economics – and the economic choices many politicians have instituted since the onset of the global recession. As was argued by Martin Wolf in the Financial Times: “Real income stagnation over a far longer period than any since the Second World War is a fundamental political fact.”

Wolf drew data from the McKinsey Global Institute’s report, “Poorer than their Parents?” which detailed the number of households suffering from real incomes that are either stagnant or falling: “On average between 65 percent and 70 percent of households in 25 high-income economies experienced this between 2005 and 2014. In the period between 1993 and 2005, however, only 2 percent of households suffered stagnant or declining real incomes.”

This staggering data alone is enough to explain why voters are angry, scared and rightly frustrated with the political class.

It’s easy for politicians and government leaders to dismiss these populist winds, but that’s a dangerous proposition. Voters are frustrated because government has become ineffective, political leaders are out of touch and unaccountable, and the fortunes of the elite seem to improve while the many stagnate or get worse.

Perhaps the greatest lesson of the 2016 election is that populism is bred when the political class fails to listen and act.

To the Editor: It is dumbfounding why Richard Schmack is now asking the voters to re-elect him when just a few months ago he sent an email to Eileen Dubin and me, after we had asked for a meeting regarding our concern for the future of mental health care and the hospital sale, stating that he doesn’t work for the residents of this county and only answers to the County Board.

I quote directly from Schmack’s email: “I am constrained by law to provide advisory opinions only to those governmental officials and employees whom I actually represent, and not render advisory opinions to private citizens, even on matters of public concern.

“Obviously, officers who request opinions not within the scope of their duties, are acting as private citizens. I could only offer opinions or take actions connected with the document you sent at the direction of the County Board and/or County Administrator acting on behalf of the Board.

“In the absence of such direction I must respectfully decline the proposed meeting.”

So now he has the nerve to ask the public to re-elect him, after he did not even want to meet and discuss our concerns? I will add that after

pressure from another county official, he did talk with us briefly, but did nothing further to follow up on our request.

He only wants to represent those in power, not the people of DeKalb County. It’s time to send him packing.

The fact that the World Trade Organization allows this “unequal treatment,” Navarro said, is “a prime example of how U.S. trade representatives often fail to recognize the consequences of the bad deals they negotiate.” Trump, he promises, will pressure the WTO to change.

House Speaker Ryan agrees with Trump’s description but would solve the problem in a different way: by having the U.S. replace the corporate income tax with a business consumption tax that is “border adjusted” – meaning that the tax applies to imports and exempts exports. When the House Republicans released their tax plan, they promised: “For the first time ever, the United States will be able to counter the border adjustments that our trading partners apply in their VATs.” Other Republicans have touted border adjustability as an advantage of consumption taxes. So has Bill Clinton. You can see the ap-

peal for free-traders like Ryan and Clinton: They seem to have found a way to respond to voter anxieties about trade without protectionism.

But they’re wrong about this issue, for three reasons.

First, it’s not unfair for countries to apply their VATs to our exporters. They apply the VAT to their own companies, too. A tariff, which applies to imports but not to domestically produced goods, is different: It pushes consumers to buy the homemade rather than imported product.

If your tax system is based on domestic consumption, it makes perfect sense to apply it to products that are consumed at home – whether they came from home or from foreign countries – but not to products that will be consumed in those foreign countries. The WTO allows countries to border-adjust their VATs because it grasps this point.

Second, most economists believe that making taxes border-adjusted causes the currency to appreciate, negating any effect on the value of imports and exports. (This effect, as my American Enterprise Institute colleague Alan Viard has explained in Tax Notes, is a logical consequence of the fact that over the very long run, a nation’s imports and exports must be in balance.)

That means other countries’ VATs don’t affect our trade balance.

It also means that adopting a similar tax system wouldn’t, in the long run, increase our exports and reduce our imports. And it would, perversely, transfer wealth from Americans who hold foreign assets to foreigners who hold American ones.

Third, the argument rests on the enduring mercantilist fallacy that exports benefit a country and imports harm it – the same fallacy that leads many people to embrace full-blown protectionism. The goal of raising exports and cutting imports is actually a deliberate objective of lowering Americans’ standard of living. As Viard puts it, “We would forever send more goods and services, produced by our toil and with our natural resources, to foreign consumers while forever receiving fewer goods and services for our enjoyment in return.”

A consumption tax could boost economic growth by ending the current tax code’s bias against saving and investment. But it would not reduce the long-term trade deficit, and we shouldn’t want it to.

Hillary Clinton should offer up a better, simpler tax code Hillary Clinton already had an elaborate plan for tax reform. This week she added to it, again. She now wants to double, to $2,000, the tax credit granted to parents of young children, and to make it “refundable,” meaning that cash would be paid even to parents who owe little or no tax.

As it stands, there’s lot to be said for this idea. The rest of Clinton’s tax plan contains some good ideas, too. The problem, however, is a surfeit of ideas of every kind – good, bad and indifferent. What the U.S. tax code needs most is simplification. That, it seems, is not among the candidate’s tax-reform priorities.

A refundable tax credit for low-income families is a fairly expensive proposal: It would cost on the order of $200 billion over 10 years. Yet it’s a cost-effective measure, because it’s well-targeted.

(The child care deduction suggested

by Donald Trump isn’t refundable, so it’s worth most to the families who need it least.) The plan also has bipartisan appeal: Marco Rubio suggested something similar during his presidential campaign.

Tax reform, however, shouldn’t be judged piece by piece. That’s how years of incremental change have yielded an insanely complex system.

A wide-ranging scheme of reform, such as Clinton’s, affords the opportunity to smooth out unforeseen incentives and unintended spikes in effective tax rates – economic signals that send effort and investment in the wrong direction. She’s missed that opportunity.

Granted, Clinton’s approach is straightforward: She aims to raise taxes on the rich, leave taxes on middle-income households broadly unchanged and give new help to low-income families. The simple

way to do that would be to raise marginal income-tax rates for those on higher incomes and convert deductions into credits that deliver the same relief, in dollar terms, regardless of income.

Instead, the Clinton plan gives the code new layers, akin to the alternative minimum tax – namely, a 30 percent minimum for taxpayers earning more than $1 million a year (the so-called Buffett Rule) plus a new 4 percent surcharge for those making more than $5 million. Her plan (like Trump’s) also proposes to close the notorious carried-interest loophole, which lets some rich taxpayers classify income as capital gains, taxed at lower rates.

That’s good – a simplification, as well as being fairer. Unfortunately, she also wants to add new bands to the capital-gains tax schedule (the longer the holding period, the lower the rate).

This introduces new complications.

Clinton’s approach to corporate-tax reform is no simpler. Lower rates and a broader base would discourage tax evasion and strengthen incentives to invest for sound economic reasons. Instead, her plan leaves the basic flaws of high rates and a narrow base unmended, and proposes a battery of new rules to curb abuses. The error is obvious, and the current code proves it: Complexities are opportunities to game the system. Simplicity is desirable in itself, but it also serves the purposes of fairness and compliance.

Clinton’s goals of relieving poverty, making the tax code somewhat more progressive and reducing evasion are commendable. But those aims are better achieved by making the tax code less complicated, not more.

Paul Ryan and Donald Trump have, let’s say, a complicated relationship. Ryan has told the congressional Republicans he leads that he will no longer defend Trump – not that he ever really did – and told them to feel free to disavow him.

Trump fired off an angry tweet in response, taking Ryan to task on immigration, jobs and the budget.

But even their policy disagreements are more complicated than you might think. Ryan would never say, as Trump repeatedly has, that the North American Free Trade Agreement has been a disaster. Yet they are not quite as far apart on trade as they appear to be. Both of them think that the way other countries tax imports and exports gives them a competitive advantage over the U.S., and that we can reduce the trade deficit by addressing the difference between our tax systems.

Both of them are wrong.

During the first presidential debate, Trump complained that our exports to Mexico are subject to the country’s value-added tax, which is a kind of consumption tax. But: “When they sell into us there’s no tax.” That’s one reason he considers NAFTA “a defective agreement.”

His economic adviser Peter Navarro has written about the subject in a paper for the Trump campaign.

The waffle irons were made for Andresen by Griswold.

Alfred Andresen & Co. also imported Swedish spinning wheels, Swedish saws and other items that appealed to the Scandinavian community in the area. Waffle irons are not popular collectibles, but the heart shape and age of your waffle iron might make it worth $100 if it still works. ** * Q: I need to sell a Stieff square grand piano, serial No. 6153. I’ve been told they are few in number and one was in the White House. An antiques dealer and auctioneer told me that old pianos are referred to as “boat anchors,” meaning they are very hard to sell. The piano is in good shape, but hasn’t been tuned since 2002. Does it have any value as a piano, or for the wood itself? I was told it’s Brazilian rosewood, which is no longer available in the U.S. A: Charles M. Stieff established his piano company in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1842. The business was liquidated in 1951. The pattern name is “Delaware,” but it was also known as “New Century” or “Four Petal Flower.” The pattern was first made in 1899 by the U.S. Glass Co., a group of 15 glass companies that merged in 1891 and had a headquarters in Pittsburgh. Delaware was made in crystal (colorless), emerald green, custard, milk glass and ruby stain, like yours. Some pieces had gold trim. Other Delaware shapes included a sugar and creamer; various bowls; shakers; celery vase; compote dish; cruet; custard cup; toothpick; berry, table and water sets; dresser boxes; and a pin tray. It was made about 1900 at an Indian boarding school and sold for $11,070. building a model brick house are there, but the glue bottle is cracked. Was this a toy or for an architect? What is it worth?

A: This building set was made by Architector Co. of New York and was advertised as a toy for both boys and girls. The complete set includes white and red bricks, wood molding, shingles, glue and building plans. The plans were designed by professional architects. Building sets are popular today and your set, still has all the pieces and can be used to build a house, so it’s worth about $100.

Q: I’m looking for information on a maker’s mark on a porcelain clock. The initials “GB” are embossed above a plow. The letters below the plow but the last three letters are “ose” with an accent mark over the “e.” It may be depose. I wondered if it is Spanish.

A: This mark was used by Gustav Bossenroth, a German clockmaker. There is almost no information about him, but he is sometimes listed in Berlin and as working in the early 1900s. The word depose is French and means the design was registered.

Two-setter system working

Boever, Kinley help Huskies to 6-0 start in MAC West

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – During fall camp, junior Chandler Kinley and freshman Sam Boever were competing for the starting setter spot for the Northern Illinois volleyball team.

About a half-hour before the season opener against DePaul, Huskies coach Ray Gooden told them his decision.

He was going to play both of them.

The two successfully have shared setting duties this season, and the Huskies are off to a perfect start in Mid-American Conference play heading into their 7 p.m. Friday home match against Buffalo.

“We have options, which is cool, whether in a one-setter system or a two-setter system,” Gooden said. “I think it’s mainly because we have a lot of hitters we want to use. It’s not that one setter is better or they’re not good enough. I just feel like for the first time in a while, there’s depth on the right side that we can find balance with a two-setter situation.”

Although only one of them plays at a time, Gooden said this is the first time he purposefully has used a two-setter formation at NIU. The duo took over after the Huskies graduated Alexis Gonzalez, who was a two-time first-team all-MAC player and was the conference’s Setter of the Year in 2015.

Gooden admits that, like every year, he was nervous on how the Huskies would replace the talent they lost from the previous season. However, with Kinley and Boever as setters, the Huskies are 14-4 overall, 6-0 in the MAC West and riding a nine-match winning streak.

“Chandler and I have different

styles, so I’m sure from a setting standpoint it is a little different, but overall, we try to set the same tempo and speed,” said Boever, who came to NIU from Gilbert, Arizona. “It feels pretty cohesive now as opposed to the beginning of the season when I felt a little rocky.”

Kinley, who is from Lexington, Kentucky, is averaging 5.65 assists a set

this season, including 5.05 a set in conference matches, and 2.22 digs. Boever is putting up 4.69 assists a set on the year and 4.32 in conference.

Both have played in all 22 sets during conference play.

“Although it’s competitive between me and Chandler, I really respect her and I go to her if I need help setting or with connections or something like that,” Boever said. “Obviously, I would want to be on the floor the whole time, but I think it works best for our team for both of us to be out there. I’m her biggest supporter when I’m on the bench. I love it when we do well when she’s in, and I love it when we do well when I’m in.”

Kinley played in 16 matches as a sophomore last season, including a start against No. 14 Florida State in which she had a career-high 28 assists. With plenty of talented senior attackers on the roster, Kinley said the rotations of having two setters allow the Huskies to maximize their offensive capabilities.

“It’s definitely different. It’s the first time I’ve done this before, but I think it’s really cool because it allows more people to get in,” Kinley said of sharing the setting duties.

Gooden jokes that there had been times earlier in the season that the Huskies’ setting has been “garbage,” but highlights that it’s been nice to see the evolution from them. However, in a position that relies heavily on rhythm, he understands the challenge of each of them having to rotate in and out but still keeping a consistent flow.

“When you go in and out, you have to figure out how to stay in it as much as you possibly can,” Gooden said.

Former assistant coach Theder dies at 77

sports@daily-chronicle.com Former Northern Illinois University assistant football coach and University of California head coach Roger Theder died Saturday because of complications from Parkinson’s disease at age 77, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

Renown for his expertise on offense, Theder served three seasons (1965-67) on Hall of Fame head coach Howard Fletcher’s Huskies football staff when NIU went a combined 22-5, plus cap-

tured the Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship and earned a Mineral Water Bowl bid, both in 1965.

Theder also was instrumental in recruiting NIU Hall of Fame receiver John Spilis, the program’s highest NFL draft choice for almost four decades (third-round pick of the Green Bay Packers in 1969).

A former resident of Orinda, California, Theder spent a decade at Cal-Berkley as an assistant to Mike White and then head coach (1978-81).

His best season at Cal came in 1979

with a 7-5 record and the Pac-10 Conference school’s first bowl appearance in 21 years – a 28-17 loss to Temple in the Garden State Bowl. During his time with the Bears, he developed star quarterbacks such as Steve Bartkowski, Joe Roth and Rich Campbell.

Theder also coached under John Ralston at Stanford (1968-71), where he tutored Heisman Trophy recipient Jim Plunkett. He finished his career as offensive coordinator at San Jose State (1993-96). In between, Theder was an aide with the Baltimore Colts and San Diego Chargers.

His most notable player during his Cal head coaching tenure was All-America linebacker Ron Rivera, a former Chicago Bear and current head coach of the Carolina Panthers.

A quarterback and baseball catcher at Western Michigan in the early 1960s, Theder, in the late stages of his life, would independently mentor numerous high school QB prospects – including Colin Kaepernick of the San Francisco 49ers.

Theder is survived by his wife, Marie, three children and six grandchildren.

“I think we played really well, and after we got that first goal, we really started rolling,” Cogs coach Randy Tate said. “We had some different people score, and the game plan was to attack and take shots and crash the net after we take those shots. I think we executed the plan very well today.”

WATERMAN – The Genoa-Kingston boys soccer team scored in a hurry in the first half on its way to beating Westminster Christian, 5-1, Wednesday in a Class 1A Indian Creek Regional semifinal.

The Cogs (13-6) took 15 minutes to score their first goal, but gained control of the game early in the first half by dominating time of possession over Westminster Christian (13-10-1) and getting eight shots on goal that resulted in four first-half goals.

Forward Oscar Pizano put the Cogs on the board with his goal at the 25:14 mark in the first half. Matthew McCluskey added a goal two minutes after Pizano to extend the lead to 2-0.

Damen Tijarina kept the team’s foot on the gas after scoring with just less than 13 minutes to go in the first half, and Nick Uecker put the game out of reach for the Warriors with 7 minutes to play in the first half; making it a 4-0 game going into halftime.

Growing pains start with loss to Blues

Opener likely a good indicator of what to expect from Hawks

mlazerus@suntimes.com CHICAGO – Like just about every other sequence during the second period Wednesday night, this one started as some sort of tragi-comic farce. Tyler Motte, in his first NHL game, raced up the middle of the ice at full speed, only to trip over Ryan Hartman’s lost stick and faceplant near the blue line. But the two rookies just kept going.

Hartman saved a Robert Bortuzzo clearing attempt at the blue line, then fired wide. Motte darted behind the net and won a battle to nudge the puck back to Hartman on the doorstep, and Hartman buried it for the first goal of his NHL career.

“I told Hartzy to go get a big shift there, and he responded,” Jonathan Toews said. “It was good to see that, those two guys respond.”

Of course, the Hawks were outshot 15-3 in that period, and had only three shots over a 34-minute stretch spanning all three periods. And veterans Artem Anisimov, Toews and Duncan Keith took three overlapping penalties late in the period that led to two St. Louis goals. And the Hawks killed only two of five St. Louis power plays. And all four rookie forwards played three minutes or less in the first period.

Heck, the game was sealed when Brent Seabrook and Keith combined to score on their own empty net in the final minute.

The opening-night 5-2 loss to the Blues probably was a good indicator of what to expect from these Hawks as they feel things out the first few games – weeks? months? – of the season. A mix of good and bad, of genuine hope and legitimate concern. It’s a long season, and the Hawks have a lot of things to figure out.

“We’ve got a good group, and we’ve got a lot of confidence from the top down,” Motte said. “As a group, we know we can be better. We weren’t firing on all cylinders tonight. Young guys or not, we’ve all got to take it upon ourselves to be better.”

It started well enough. Another rookie, Michal Kempny, introduced himself to Hawks fans and to Dmitrij Jaskin with a big hit along the boards, and Richard Panik put the Hawks up, 1-0, on a power-play goal at 4:38 of the first period, putting in a Toews rebound. But there were signs of trouble, too, especially with how little coach Joel Quenneville was trusting his bottom six, where all four rookies were situated. Only Motte wound up with more than nine minutes of ice time, thanks to his spot on the penalty-killing unit alongside Marcus Kruger.

“We’d like to play them more,” Quenneville said. “The way the game went, we got behind early in the third, and then we’re chasing it. We’d like to play everyone a little more, and not our top guys as much.”

The Hawks didn’t get a shot over the last half of the period, and then fell back into a tie when a Trevor van Riemsdyk penalty led to a Kevin Shattenkirk power-play goal at 4:52 of the second. Motte and Hartman got the arena rocking again with their hardwork goal at 13:57 of the second, but then the Hawks imploded.

Toews was called for a slash, Anisimov for a hook and Keith for a highstick. Vladimir Tarasenko tied it at 2 on the first 5-on-3, and Paul Stastny gave the Blues a 3-2 lead during the Keith penalty early in the third. It could have been worse, as van Riemsdyk – likely the leading candidate to sit Friday when Niklas Hjalmarsson returns from his suspension – took another penalty, this time for boarding.

“Put ourselves in a tough spot,” Quenneville said. “A tough start, PKwise, but we have the personnel that we feel can get the job done.”

Quenneville shook up the lines in the third, and got a spark from an all-kid line of Motte, Hinostroza and Hartman, which generated a power play midway through the third. But the Hawks couldn’t capitalize, and Tarasenko’s empty-netter with 1:06 left sealed their fate, before the owngoal ended it for good.

There will be a learning curve for the rookies, but it’s a long season. And the Hawks hope these early growing pains could pay off down the road. But with one down and 81 to go, nobody’s particularly happy.

“Everyone takes ownership for that effort, and it starts with the guys that have experience and know what’s expected of our team,” Toews said. “In that regard, we have to lead the way and set the tone. We didn’t do that well enough tonight. Everyone’s responsible.”

Campbell returns, still has first-game jitters

mlazerus@suntimes.com CHICAGO – It’s been a long time since Brian Campbell could roll out of his own bed at his own house, hop in his car, and drive the rink for a home game. But that’s what the Blackhawks defenseman – and full-time Chicago-area resident – did Wednesday.

“The commute wasn’t that bad today,” he said with a smile. “Didn’t mind it.”

Campbell took a significant discount, signing a one-year, $1.5 million

contract, to return to the city he calls home. And although Wednesday night was his 1,003rd career regular-season game, he still had some firstgame jitters.

“Anytime you play the first game of the season, doesn’t matter who you’re with or Brian what, you always have Campbell a little bit of butterflies and excitement and some nerves,” he said. “It’s just the nature of the game.

But it’s a lot of excitement.”

Chasing 500: Last fall, Marian Hossa was fielding questions about his looming 500th goal. This fall, he still is, after a career-low 13 goals left him at 499.

“I never thought I could be one day close to this number,” he said before the game. “That’s great. I know I’m pretty close to 500, so that would be nice to get it over sooner than later.”

Safety first: The NHL has been criticized and sued for its refusal to acknowledge and disclose the danger hockey poses in causing head trauma, but the league took a big step toward addressing the concern over concus-

sions Tuesday by announcing a new concussion protocol. There now will be a team of “spotters” monitoring every game from the Player Safety Room in New York. They will have the authority to have a player removed from a game to be evaluated for a possible concussion, taking the decision out of the teams’ hands.

“I think that’s great progression for the league,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said. “There’s a heightened awareness to concussions, and there’s one more level or layer to make sure the players are safe.”

A nonbeliever starts to soften on the David Ross phenomenon That’s something you could ask my teammates or the fans. I try to be myself. I think a lot of it stems from the nice things my teammates have said about me all year, the way they’ve treated me the last two years, at spring training.

“They’ve given me a lot of respect and (so have media members) talking about how great I am, which is complete BS. I think a lot of it stems from that. Guys that are the face of this franchise, guys like Jonny Lester and [Kris Bryant] and [Anthony Rizzo], the future stars in [Addison Russell], and all those guys seem to say nice things about me.”

A friend of mine appeared at a SunTimes playoffs party at Harry Caray’s restaurant recently and expressed similar disdain on stage for the Ross phenomenon. When the panel discussion was opened to questions from the audience, a woman stood up and saluted the Cubs for honoring Ross for all that he had done.

Clearly, we Ross realists are losing big to the Ross rooters.

When Rizzo and Bryant set up a Grandpa Rossy Instagram account (@grandpaRossy_3) to chronicle Ross’ final season, it was an immediate hit.

It has 153,000 followers. Not bad for a backup catcher.

“Since the Grandpa Rossy Instagram thing took place, it’s been a lot crazier for me just out and about in public,” he said.

Ross has been with seven teams in 14 full seasons. That he has been popular among teammates wherever he has played is probably the biggest tribute to him.

SAN FRANCISCO – Some of us have been slow to understand the infatuation with Cubs backup catcher David Ross. Some of us have wondered what the results of this poll question would be in Chicago: What’s greater, Cubs fans’ love for Ross or God’s love for mankind?

A Cubs fan would respond: How many VIEWS times can we vote?

Rick People Morrissey can see that the 39-year-old Ross is genuine and that he genuinely is a nice guy. But the clear thinkers among us have to balance those truths with another, that some Cubs fans would cheer for a turnip if it were wearing a Ron Santo jersey.

And then you see Ross hit that third-inning home run to tie Game 4 of their National League Division Series against the Giants; you watch him being interviewed as the Cubs celebrate their trip to the NL Championship Series and you feel the first rays of enlightenment washing over you.

“I got a homer – how about that!”

Ross told CSN Chicago. “Blind squirrel theory.”

Self-deprecation can soothe the savage cynic.

It’s understandable that Ross’ teammates would be drawn to a part-time player, given his age, enthusiasm and impending retirement. He has been a mentor to and a cheerleader for his fellow Cubs.

His on-base-plus-slugging percentage in the regular season was .784, sixth-best on the team, and he has done good work behind the plate. He threw out two San Francisco baserunners in Game 1 of the NLDS. And with that homer Tuesday night, he became the oldest Cub to hit a home run in a postseason game in team history.

But there almost is no way that whatever Ross has done for the Cubs could translate into this much love.

None. And yet, somehow, it has. A standing ovation for him at Wrigley Field is not a rarity. When Ross caught a no-hitter in April, a few people even found time to congratulate

Judge refuses to declare mistrial in Rose rape case

LOS ANGELES – Lawyers for a woman who filed a lawsuit accusing NBA star Derrick Rose and two of his friends of rape failed to disclose text messages to the defense, but the lapse was not significant enough to derail the civil trial, a judge ruled Wednesday.

Lawyers for Rose had argued that the plaintiff’s lawyers purposely withheld three texts until the woman finished testifying so the defense couldn’t ask about messages that showed she had been plotting sex on the night in question and, on the next day, was seeking taxi reimbursement and not accusing anyone of rape.

The woman’s lawyers said the texts did not add new information. They claimed they were shared with the defense, but they couldn’t prove it.

The judge said he would instruct jurors that the texts were disclosed recently and allow defense lawyers to question the accuser about the messages.

LAKE FOREST – The Jaguars bring a top-flight receiver Sunday to Soldier Field in Allen Robinson, who has 21 catches for 238 yards and three scores this season, coming off his 1,400-yard, 14-touchdown season in 2015.

Truly Prince Paisley Park visitors will see artist’s studio and mementos The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHANHASSEN, Minnesota – Prince’s handwritten notes still sit out in the control room of Studio A at Paisley Park, where he recorded some of his greatest hits and was working on a jazz album before he died. The room is filled with his keyboards and guitars, and his iconic symbol graces the control panel.

Those are some of the highlights visitors to Paisley Park saw at the 65,000-square-foot studio complex where Prince died of an accidental painkiller overdose in April.

The museum opened under a temporary permit Oct. 6 – and only two other dates for which tickets had already been sold – instead of daily as originally planned, after city council members in the Minneapolis suburb of Chanhassen delayed action on rezoning because of concerns about public safety and traffic. It’s unclear when the museum will be allowed to begin full-scale tour operations, but the council said it would vote on the issue again “on or before” Dec. 20.

Graceland Holdings, which runs Elvis Presley’s Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee, is managing the museum for the Prince estate.

When tours begin, fans entering the Purple Rain room will see the script, guitar and a motorcycle that Prince rode in the 1984 movie of the same name.

Art Box hosts ‘Kishwaukee College Student Print’ show DAILY CHRONICLE Robert Davis, adjunct professor at Kishwaukee College, will display his students’ prints and photographs at The Art Box, 308 E. Lincoln Highway in downtown DeKalb, through Nov. 10. A reception for the artists is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16.

The “Kishwaukee College Student Print” exhibit will include intaglio etchings, aquatints and mezzotints, and photography, both traditional silver gelatin and digital.

The method of intaglio printmaking can be dated back to 3000 BCE in Samaria. The word, intaglio (the “g” is silent) is Latin for “to cut in, engrave.”

An engraving tool and/or acid is used to make impressions in a metal plate where ink is worked into all of the depressed areas, then the top surface is wiped away with newsprint paper. Paper is soaked in water, damp blotted, placed over the inked metal plate, then sent through a printing press to transfer the ink to the paper.

Aquatints and mezzotints are methods using a powdered resin that is adhered to the metal plate through a heat process. Many layers of an aquatint will provide gray areas through several acid baths.

Kishwaukee Concert Band slated to perform Oct. 23 DAILY CHRONICLE The Kishwaukee Concert Band will open the 15th season at 3 p.m. Oct. 23, in the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall in the Music Building at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

The concert is sponsored by Paul Gehrett in dedication to his mother, Patricia, musician, music educator and his first piano teacher. The directors for “Fall Concert” will be Dave Lehman and Deborah Shofner.

The concert is free and the building is handicapped accessible.

The concert will open with Lehman directing “The Star Spangled Banner.” Next is “Noble Men March,” by Henry Fillmore, who wrote the piece for the Shriners convention in 1922. Fillmore was one of the most colorful and beloved band leaders of the 20th century.

Other first-half selections on the program include “Prairie Songs,” composed in 1998 by Pierre LaPlante, “English Suite”

by Clare Grundman and “Chorale and Shaker Dance II” by John Zdechlik.

After an intermission, Shofner will direct the second half of the concert, starting with “Shield of Liberty,” by John Joseph Richards and the ever-favorite “King & I,” featuring the familiar “Getting to Know You,” “Whenever I Feel Afraid,” “Hello, Young Lovers,” “March of the Siamese Children” and “Shall We Dance.”

Next is “Far East Fantasy,” based on scales and melodic patterns of the music of Japan, China, Korea and other East Asian countries.

The concert will close with “The Light Eternal,” inspired by the touching story of four U.S. Army chaplains who heroically sacrificed their lives during World War II. It is based on the well-known hymn “God of Our Fathers.”

The band is a nonprofit organization supported by the DeKalb County Community Foundation and the Mary E. Stevens Concert & Lecture Fund.

This satirical murder mystery revolves around the life and times of William Gillette, whose portrayal of Sherlock Holmes became legendary in the early 20th century. Gillette met Arthur Conan Doyle and instantly became the prototype of Holmes in the author’s opinion and became a very rich man with his theatrical enactments of the great detective.

The play features Gillette, a collection of quirky friends, an untimely death, a séance and asks the ultimate question “Who done it?” at a weekend getaway during Christmastime in the castle. There are laughs as well as clues galore.

The director, Amanda Smothers, is multi-talented. She wrote the adaptation, directed and designed costumes and set for the

2013 Stage Coach production of “A Christmas Carol.” She is happy to now be directing as well as assisting in other production tasks for “The Game’s Afoot.” The stage manager is Abbey Lippert, who appeared earlier this summer in “The Laramie Project.”

Denny Boynton plays Gillette and his larger-than-life personality. The rest of the cast are familiar talents to the Stage Coach audience: Gloria Dennison, Kathy Hewitt, Mike Mattingly, Bonnie Miller, Scott Montavon and Christy Torian. Amaria Von Dran is a newcomer to Stage Coach but a very talented actress from the Fox Valley area.

I am a lifelong resident of Ogle and DeKalb Counties. I graduated from University of Illinois with BS and MS degrees. I taught Home Economics for several years and later worked as the Coordinator of the Single Parents and Homemakers Program at Kishwaukee College for 7 years. This program was a grant-funded initiative to assist single parents and homemakers in need of vocational training in preparation for the workforce. Teen parents were later served by this program.

In 1992 I took a position as Family life Educator for the University of Illinois Extension. During my years as an Extension employee I also worked as a County Extension Director in Lee and DeKalb Counties until my retirement in 2005.

During my retirement I have been trained as a U of Illinois Extension Master Gardner. I have volunteered in this capacity in DeKalb County since 2008. In addition I served on the DeKalb County Nursing Home Foundation Board (4 years) and I joined the DeKalb Area Agricultural Heritage Association Board in 2015.

I have been active as a farm wife during all of these years, assisting in management and farm work as time allowed.

The ATHENA Award Reception will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, October 25, 2016 in the Lincoln Ballroom at the Red Roof Inn & Suites, DeKalb, IL. The public is invited to attend – tickets are $30 each.

Registration is open for Northern Illinois University’s second annual Huskie Hack, a 26-hour contest designed to spark innovation, collaboration and entrepreneurship.

The event, which will be in the Holmes Student Center, will start at noon Nov. 5 and finish at 2 p.m. the next day. Students work throughout the 26 hours of the event. Anyone who needs a rest can snooze in the center’s atrium, but most participants prefer to stay up all night hacking or partaking in alternative activities such as mini-competitions, on-site scavenger hunts, midnight bowling or early morning Zumba or yoga.

Registration is free and open to any college student with a valid ID. Middle and high school students are also welcome, as long as their parents sign consent forms following registration. Food will be provided to all participants.

Coding experience is welcome, but by no means required.

“In the movies, computer hacking is only for extreme tech wizards looking to make mischief,” event coordinator Tracy Rogers-Tryba said in a news release. “But in reality, hacking is a perspective and set of tools for anyone intending to make something awesome – whether it’s an app, a new device, or a business plan – in any field, including engineering, health, business, the arts and government.”

After forming teams based on their interests and skill sets, participants will start hacking their ideas

into reality, using hardware and software supplied

by NIU STEAM Works. Mentors from sponsoring businesses will be on hand to offer teams guidance.

“This gives students a chance to get acquainted with employers who recognize the value and skill sets that innovation and entrepreneurialism demand: critical thinking, the ability to learn from failure, team building, and collaboration,” Rogers-Tryba said in the release. “For some participants, the hackathon also becomes an on-the-spot job fair. For others, it’s a chance to learn about all that NIU has to offer for young innovators.”

At the end of the weekend, each team will present a demonstration of its project. Judges from sponsoring businesses and the public will award prizes.

Huskie Hack is sanctioned by Major League Hacking, the official international student hackathon league focused on mentorship and support for students engaged in computer coding. In addition to winning prizes, participants can earn points that boost their schools’ standings in MLH rankings.

MLH co-founder Jon Gottfried will give a talk exploring the history of hacking and its role in innovation today.

The event is hosted by NIU STEAM Works, with help from Tech Bark, an NIU student organization focused on how computers can be used for creative problem solving.

IVT presents ‘Over the River and Through the Woods’ DAILY CHRONICLE Indian Valley Theatre will present the comedy “Over the River and Through the Woods,” written by Joe DiPietro, on Oct. 21 through 23 at the Sandwich Opera House, 140 E. Railroad St. in Sandwich.

In this humorous comedy, a young woman has to deal with her two sets of overbearing grandparents. Nicki is a single, Italian-American woman from New Jersey. Her parents retired and moved to Florida. But, she sees both

sets of grandparents every Sunday for dinner. This is routine until she tells them that she’s been offered a dream job that would take her to Seattle. The news doesn’t sit very well.

The play is directed by Rich Bryan, with the assistance of Connie Cline.

Christine Roe is the producer. The cast includes Meredith Eskoff, Matthew Johnson, Sharon Cuneo, Thomas Merkel, Nancy Wiggins and Tom Stark.

Kish Theatre names cast and crew for fall production DAILY CHRONICLE Nadine Franklin, Kishwaukee College theatre faculty and resident director, has announced the cast for the fall 2016 production of “Love Letters,”

by A. R. Gurney.

The production will be staged Nov. 9 through 12 in the Kishwaukee College Theatre with a curtain time of 7:30 p.m. Franklin will direct the play.

The cast is: Manda Neill, Sycamore,

and Bryan Simpson, DeKalb. The crew are students Lily Haish, Sycamore, stage manager; Taylor Kadison, Cortland, light board operator; and Jacob Nicholson, Chana, dramaturg.

Community members assisting with the production are John Franklin, set design; Chris G’Fellers, lighting design; Miles Halpern, art; and Anna Fox, house manager. Assistants to the director are Chris G’Fellers and Jessica Lang Giles.

“Love Letters” revolves around a 50-year relationship between Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III told exclusively by letters written to each other, beginning in childhood.

The play’s seeming simplicity belies the power and emotion it conveys as Melissa and Andrew move forward through their lives and as the impact each age and experience has on the evolution of their relationship is revealed.

“Love Letters” was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 1990. A.R. Gurney is one of the most produced playwrights in the U.S. and is best known for works that examine the American middle class. He has received the Drama Desk Award, Rockefeller Award and two Lucille Lortel Awards for his works.

Here are some of the best ways to reduce your risk of gum disease: • Brush and floss. Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Floss before bedtime.

• Don’t smoke. People who smoke up to a half a pack of cigarettes a day are almost three times as likely as nonsmokers to have periodontitis.

• Eat a healthy diet. A diet rich in vegetables, vegetable oils, fruits, legumes, nuts and fatty fish helps suppress inflammation in the gums and throughout the body.

• Get regular dental checkups and cleanings. Your dentist or dental hygienist can remove bacteria-harboring plaque and spot the first signs of periodontal disease.

• Get treatment at the first signs of gum disease. Swollen, bleeding gums, pockets of pus or gums that have pulled away from your teeth are the most dramatic signs of gum disease. Subtler changes include widening spaces between your teeth, and bridges or partial dentures that don’t fit as well as they once did.

So your dentist is not exaggerating the importance of gum disease. It’s something you can do a great deal to prevent.

Dear Dr. K: My dentist always is going on about gum disease. Is it really a big deal? If so, what should I do to prevent it?

Dear Reader: I understand your skepticism. It seems hard to believe your gums could cause serious problems. The kidneys, the liver, the heart, the brain – of course.

But the gums?

Yes, the gums: Your dentist is right.

Periodontal disease, also known as periodontitis and gum disease, is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

Our mouths house complex networks of bacteria. When all of the species are in balance, our gums are protected from disease-causing bacteria. Disturbing this balance provides an opening for disease-causing bacteria to cause inflammation of the gums, and that destroys gum tissue.

The effects of gum disease vary from person to person. In some people, it causes mild redness and swelling of the gums (gingivitis). In others, it can destroy the tooth’s bony support structure, leading to tooth loss.

However, the reason your dentist may be urging you to protect your gums is not just because of the dental problems gum disease causes. People with gum disease also are at higher risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, pregnancy complications and dementia.

We don’t yet know if gum disease actually causes these health problems. There is considerable evidence inflammation in the gums causes harmful molecules to leave the gums and spread in the bloodstream throughout the body.

On the other hand, it might be the link between gum disease and diseases of other organs is explained in a different way. For example, people with chronic health issues have more difficulty taking care of their
