What if half of us left Illinois?

What would happen if everybody who wanted to leave Illinois got their wish?

According to Kevin Craver’s story on page 7 of Tuesday’s Daily Chronicle, it would free up a lot of space. About half of Illinois residents in a new poll said they would like to leave the state, and one in five said they’re likely to move away in the next year.

I’d hate to see everybody go. In a state with 12.8 million people, I’m sure some of the 6.4 million people who left would be friends of mine.

It would be nice to be able to drive into Chicago with only half the traffic, or wait in airport security lines that were half as long. Maybe the mass exodus would make it easier to get tickets to big events, too, such as Cubs and Blackhawks games or the musical “Hamilton.”

I imagine that a lot of the people moving away would leave their jobs as well – so maybe there would be a lot of companies placing “help wanted” ads across all kinds of sectors, from warehousing and construction to professional services and academia.

It might be kind of like giving Illinois a blood transfusion.

Perhaps in the same way that a transfusion can help a sick person feel reinvigorated, a sweeping change in population could reinvigorate Illinois. Maybe people with a new eye, new ideas and new voting preferences that politicians couldn’t necessarily bank on would help our state move forward in a new way.

Or maybe it wouldn’t be so much a transfusion as a slow bleed, with more and more people leaving and not enough people coming to re-

place them, sapping our state’s strength and sending it into a spiral of decline.

That would be a shame.

Had I been surveyed, I would have said I was not likely to leave Illinois in the next year – at least, not for good. Yes, winter weather can be a drag, and there’s way too much government (something that we could fix if we had a mind), but it’s still home. I usually read the newspaper when I visit other cities – and, as it turns out, it’s tough all over.

I understand the temptation to leave. This state isn’t all that it should be. Our government is a mess, from its inability to reach a budget deal to the paralysis we seem to be faced with on employee pension funds.

We need to work to fix it, and lower property taxes and eliminate some of the redundant layers of government.

It won’t happen if half of us up and leave, however. That would make it even harder to solve these problems, and the people left behind probably would be those who couldn’t afford to get out.

Besides, I’d miss some of you guys.

Why are you the best candidate for this office?

Our citizens have the right to expect their judges to have the depth and breadth of experience to handle any matter presented in court. I was a practicing attorney for 24 years before becoming a judge four years ago. I have handled and been responsible for complex litigation matters as an attorney and now as a judge. As an attorney, I argued cases before state and federal courts and submitted a written brief in support of my client’s position before the United States Supreme Court. I was honored to receive a 96.97% approval rating from the Illinois State Bar Association Judicial Advisory Poll.

The poll surveys attorneys and asks them to consider integrity, impartiality, legal ability, temperament, court management, health and sensitivity to diversity and bias.

I am honest, I have integrity, and I will bring a fresh perspective to the county if elected. I am a double NIU graduate with degrees in business and law. Currently, I work for the university as the research integrity officer. I have also published three fiction books with HarperCollins and contributed to a text book on research integrity.

If a citizen found themselves involved in a civil case before you, what should they expect?

Whether they are represented by an attorney or not, they should expect that they will receive a fair and impartial hearing. They will be afforded every opportunity to present their case within the bounds of the rules of evidence. They should also expect a ruling within a short period of time after the conclusion of the hearing or trial.

They could expect impartiality, honesty and respect.

What is your philosophy when it comes to setting bail for people accused of crimes?

The Illinois Supreme Court has implemented bail reform based on a number of objective criteria. However, I have the discretion to deviate from the criteria if I determine that the accused is a threat to the community and/or is a risk of not appearing at subsequent court hearings. I believe it is also important to remember that the accused is innocent until proven guilty and if the accused is not a risk, a lower bond amount may be appropriate.

I support Chief Stuckert’s move towards bail reform. I understand the sensitivity about this issue, but people are innocent until proven guilty. It would be unfair if a person lost their job because they were unable to make bail, especially in instances of nonviolent offenses.

When should a person found guilty of a felony crime receive probation? When should they go to prison?

Probation should be reserved for those individuals with little or no criminal history.

Most importantly, professional evaluators must determine that the defendant is unlikely to commit the same offense if placed on probation. I also believe that the prosecutor should monitor the defendant for any violations of the terms of probation and promptly bring that to the attention of the court for potential revocation of probation. Prison should be imposed when the crime committed involves great bodily harm to others or the defendant is a significant risk to members of the community.

Each case is different and specific. If elected I would follow the Illinois felony sentencing guidelines.

How would you as a jurist ensure that people’s rights are respected by our justice system and its officers?

My expectation for myself each and every day is to treat people with dignity and respect. In the criminal arena, the accused has the right to a fair and impartial hearing on all matters that come before the court. The rights of the victim must be protected to enable that person to testify to all relevant matters so the court or jury can make a fully informed decision. In the civil arena, both sides have the right to present their side of the controversy. This is especially important for those individuals who are not represented by an attorney. Access to justice is critical for those people. They need to know that the substance of their case will be fairly and impartially heard and decided.

In most instances, people are not excited to go to court. I would move cases along in a timely manner and ensure that the law is being correctly and fairly applied. I would also keep an open mind and remain unbiased.

Suspects fleeing DeKalb homicide scene caught after vehicle broke down

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Police arrested two suspects in the Oct. 6 murder of a DeKalb man after their getaway vehicle broke down on Peace Road in Sycamore, court documents show.

Evidence in the case points to only one shooter, but two men have been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the killing of 25-yearold Debrece G. Shields, according to court records obtained Tuesday.

David T. Walls, 18, of the 12000 block of Normal Avenue in Chicago, and Nico L. Griggs, 27, of the 100 block of Fir Street in Park Forest, have been charged with murder and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. Murder typically is punishable by 20 to 60 years in prison.

Both men appeared in court Tuesday; prosecutors had to refile charges against them because of a clerical error with the initial paperwork in the case, DeKalb County Judge Phil Montgomery said. Both men told Montgomery on Tuesday that they plan to hire

private lawyers. They were being held at the DeKalb County Jail on $5 million bond each.

They would have to post $500,000 bail to be released.

Nico L. DeKalb police were Griggs called just before 10:30 p.m. to a parking lot behind an apartment building at 810 Kimberly Drive, where they found Shields unconscious with at least one gunshot wound. He later died.

Video from surveillance cameras appears to show a suspect approached Shields from a parked car; the person then is seen running from the victim’s vehicle toward a tan Jeep backing out of a parking spot. Cameras show the Jeep leaving the area with a dangling front license plate, according to police reports contained in court documents.

About 15 minutes later, DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputies spotted the Jeep on North Peace near Freed Road in Sycamore – about seven miles from the apartment complex. Deputies initially saw four people in the vehicle, which was parked on the side of the road. The people in the vehicle said they were out of gas, DeKalb police Cmdr. Bob Redel said. When the deputies returned after finding out the vehicle was connected with the shooting, only two men were near the vehicle, and two others were farther from the road, Redel said.

Investigators said they believe they know the identity of the two other men, but the men have not been found. Police have said they are persons of interest in the case.

Police found two handguns on the ground near the Jeep, including a 9 mm handgun with ammunition that matched the manufacturer and caliber of the casings found at the scene, according to court documents.

Walls had what appeared to be blood on his pants and shoe, according to court documents. The Jeep belonged

to Griggs’ girlfriend, who told investigators that Griggs had borrowed it and drove it to DeKalb, authorities said. Police also found a photo of Griggs holding one of the guns that was recovered, court documents show.

Redel declined to say whether either man had made a statement to investigators. Police previously declined to comment on a possible motive for the shooting.

Neither had a FOID card, according to court documents.

Walls, who police believe was the shooter, could face up to 85 years in prison if convicted of murder with enhancements, Montgomery said. His mother told the judge she plans to hire a private attorney. Walls’ mother, who wasn’t identified in court, declined to comment outside the courthouse.

Walls is due in court Oct. 20.

their regular monthly meeting to approve the college’s $14.3 million levy for 2016. The amount includes $5.8 million that would be used for educational purposes, according to the college’s financial data.

The levy funds about 41 percent of the college’s annual budget. Last month, trustees approved a $34.5 mil-

lion spending plan for fiscal 2017, which runs July 1, 2016, to June 30, 2017.

BEVERLY J. FRIEDLUND

Born: November 7, 1929; in Rileysburg, IN Died: October 7, 2016; in DeKalb, IL Beverly J. Friedlund, 86, of Sycamore, Illinois, died Friday, October 7, 2016, at Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb.

Born November 7, 1929 at home in Rileysburg, Indiana, the daughter of Arnold B. and Mary H. (Clawson) Prather, Bev married her best friend and love of her life Harry R. “Junior” Friedlund on April 25, 1970, in DeKalb. Bev moved to the DeKalb area in 1967, with her children, to work for Blue Van and Storage.

After retiring from Blue Van, Bev worked for “D” Ceramics until becoming the owner of Bev’s Ceramics for 11 years. She managed the Pro Shop at Buena Vista Golf Course for many years. Bev was a member of the Kishwaukee Hospital Auxiliary working in the craft room, serving as Chair of the Nursing Scholarship Committee for 12 years, and as a special services volunteer. She was an avid bowler, bridge player and golfer.

She is survived by her son, Bradley (Linda) Estock of Ashton; two daughters, Sandy Kilby of Sycamore, Shelly Friedlund of Lafayette, Indiana; six grandchildren, Stephanie Kilby, Daniel (Stephanie), Rachael and Matthew (Jakki) Estock, Kelsey and Evan Quinn; 5 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and life-long best friend, Annie Stoup of Covington, Indiana.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Junior Friedlund; and her brother, Lawrence Prather.

The memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 15, at Anderson Funeral

Home in DeKalb, with the Fr. Matthew McMorrow of Christ the Teacher Parish in DeKalb celebrating. Burial of cremated remains will follow at St. Mary Cemetery in DeKalb. A reception will follow burial at the DeKalb Senior Citizens Center. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb.

eolson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A DeKalb woman was arrested Tuesday evening after she accidentally drove a Hyundai Elantra through the front window of the Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant at 2466 Sycamore Road.

The incident occurred about 6:20 p.m., with the restaurant crowded with dinner patrons. DeKalb police Sgt. Mark Tehan said the driver, Johnisha L. Harris, 22, hit the gas by accident as she pulled up to the restaurant.

“She got distracted as she pulled up and went into the building,” Tehan said.

Harris was charged with driving without a license and reckless driving,

Tehan said.

The vehicle crashed through a bank of windows, scattering shards of glass.

Three people sitting nearby where the vehicle entered the building were taken to Kishwaukee Hospital with minor injuries, Tehan said.

“She went right through, and it was a crowded restaurant,” he said. “There were people sitting right next to where she hit.”

The area where the vehicle entered the store was in front of the hostess station, and it was fortunate that no one was sitting in the waiting area at the time, Eric R. Olson – eolson@shawmedia.com Tehan said.

The state has dealt the college some financial blows as well. In fact, the levy approved is seven times more than the $2 million the college has budgeted to receive from the state this fiscal year. And that amount is less than half of the $5 million or more the

college received in state aid in previous years.

Kishwaukee College serves DeKalb, Ogle, Lee, Boone, Kane, Winnebago and LaSalle counties. Officials predict that the school will continue to hold its own, at least for now.

“We’ll make it through this year,” Johnson said. “The real, long-term question is: Will our state ever return to supporting higher ed the way it once did? Nobody really knows the answer to that.”

James “Jim” Montgomery Lahey, 82, of Dekalb, IL, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, October 9, 2016, after a valiant and courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Jim was born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 23, 1934, the warmest recorded day in Chicago history (109 degrees).

After serving in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959, he married Linda L. Lahey (Lanzi) on August 27, 1960, and they celebrated 56 years together. Jim was a graduate of St. Rita High School in Chicago. He received a PhD from the University of Illinois at

Champaign-Urbana, earning a coveted place on the school’s bronze tablet for outstanding academic achievement. Upon graduation, he joined the Accounting Department faculty at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI. Jim joined Northern Illinois University in 1970 and was an integral part of the NIU Accountancy faculty that helped establish the name behind the department and bring it to national prominence. In his 23 years with the university, Jim served in many positions in addition to his regular teaching: Director of the Accountancy Internship Program, Associate Dean of the College of Business (1984 to 1986), and played an important role in the C.P.A. Review for four years.

Jim also performed auditing services for many years to Opportunity House (a sheltered workshop located in Sycamore), and consulted for DeKalb Genetics and Barber Colman Company, Rockford. After retiring in 1993, Jim continued his lifelong love affair with golf, was a driver for MedVac, volunteered reading for the blind on Northern Public Radio (NIRIS), and enjoyed singing with

School and union negotiators reached a tentative agreement and averted a threatened strike.

CHICAGO – Teachers in the nation’s third-largest school district pulled back from a threatened strike after a tentative last-minute contract agreement that Chicago officials acknowledged Tuesday might amount to a temporary fix and parents worried would fall apart.

“It wasn’t easy, as you all know,” Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis said after Monday’s latenight agreement, which now goes to the union’s House of Delegates and all 28,000 members for a final vote.

But even as Mayor Rahm Emanuel – who fought bitterly with Lewis before and during the 2012 teachers’ strike – praised the union and the Chicago Public Schools in a speech Tuesday in which he introduced his 2017 budget proposal, it still isn’t clear how the financially strapped city would pay for the four-year deal.

The proposal includes a 2 percent cost-of-living increase in the third year and 2.5 percent one in the fourth year.

It doesn’t require current teachers to pay more toward their pensions – a change that CPS had been seeking and the union rejected earlier this year – but future hires would have to pick up

Illinois woman killed stepping out of SUV on Indiana highway

RENSSELAER, Ind. – Police said a suburban Chicago woman died after she was struck by a semi when she pulled over on an Indiana interstate and stepped outside her SUV. Indiana State Police Master Trooper Dwayne Halliburton said 30-year-old Nika L. Trippi of Lombard died Monday morning on Interstate 65 in northwestern Indiana’s Jasper County. The trooper said Trippi pulled over on the highway’s outer shoulder to check on noise coming from her vehicle.

A key provision is an agreement by the city to divert about $88 million from a $175 million surplus of the city’s at-times controversial special taxing districts – known as tax increment financing, or TIF, funds – to the schools.

That figure is less than the $200 million in additional spending the union had sought.

“Obviously, when you take that TIF surplus, that’s not a sustainable way of funding the schools,” said Alderman Pat Dowell, who represents South Side neighborhoods. “The money probably will not available next year, so the [union and the school district] are going to have to look for more permanent financing, which is probably at the

Police were searching for the semi, which they said never stopped and continued south on Interstate 65.

Trippi was thrown under her vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. Trippi’s mother and two children were inside the parked vehicle when she was struck. They were not injured.

Illinois nursing home contests $50K fine after patient death

FRANKLIN GROVE – An Illinois nursing home is contesting a $50,000 fine for a mechanical lift failure and other violations that state investigators said contributed to a resident’s death.

The Telegraph reported that the Illinois Department of Public Health cited Franklin Grove Living and Rehabilitation Center for the lift problem as well as

Alderman Patrick O’Connor agreed with Dowell, but said the city is in the same position it is in every year when it tries to secure state funding. Illinois is locked in a budget stalemate, meaning funds that are normally available have been slow to come or temporarily cut off.

“Every year, we rely on [the state] to give us a certain amount of money, and every year there is drama ... and we’re never quite sure whether it is going to come or not,” said O’Connor, who is Emanuel’s City Council floor leader and represents a West Side district.

One casualty of the TIF money diversion, which required several aldermen to sacrifice projects in their wards that

a violation of the state Nursing Home Care Act. The center is cooperating with the state, but Administrator Jessica Rogers said the nursing home doesn’t agree with the findings.

According to a state report, the lift was used June 10 to transfer a patient from a wheelchair to a bed, and a support loop to the sling holding her left leg broke. She fell, breaking her legs, and a doctor said that contributed to her death four days later.

Rockford considers creation of public housing police unit

ROCKFORD – The city of Rockford is considering creating a specialized police unit to patrol its public housing properties in an effort to combat crime and create a stronger relationship with residents.

“I just think that this is a temporary fix, and I believe that the solution coming out is temporary,” said Keisha Smith, who was dropping off her 6-year-old granddaughter at Ronald E. McNair on the city’s West Side. “We have to remain mindful that this is something for now ... like a Band-Aid and the issue is not resolved.”

Had there been a strike, Emanuel would have had to face residents who already are upset over major increases in property taxes and other fees.

Rockford Housing Authority CEO Ron Clewer approached him about creating the unit weeks after O’Shea was hired in April.

O’Shea told the Rockford Register Star the proposed POLICE unit is about building community relationships while also protecting those who are living in the housing. He said much of the crime in public housing isn’t caused by residents.

Officials said the housing authority would pay the full cost of operations, including equipment, pension, benefits and payroll. Aldermen were expected Tuesday to hear details of the estimated $900,000 annual agreement.

Suburban Chicago school district seeking $130 million

PALATINE – For a suburban Chicago school district, the presidential contest isn’t the

only issue voters will have to address in November.

Palatine School District 15 will seek voters’ permission to borrow $130 million to build two new schools – one of the costliest of such referendums on the ballot.

The Chicago Tribune reported that the request touches on a wide range of issues, including school boundaries to busing to minority integration.

Many of the district’s Hispanic students live in relatively high-density apartment complexes in pockets of Palatine and Rolling Meadows. Officials said one of the proposed new schools would be built in a Hispanic neighborhood in the northeast corner of Palatine.

Critics said the referendum involves too much change at once, but Superintendent Scott Thompson said the plan is a good one.

WASHINGTON – The “shackles” gone, Donald Trump stepped up his fierce attacks on his own party leaders Tuesday, promising to teach Republicans who oppose him a lesson and fight for the presidency “the way I want to.”

Exactly four weeks before Election Day and with his campaign foundering, the businessman reverted to the combative, divisive strategy that propelled him to victory in the GOP primary: Attack every critic – including fellow Republicans. Those close to Trump suggested it was “open season” on every detractor, regardless of party.

“It is so nice that the shackles have been taken off me and I can now fight for America the way I want to,” Trump said in a tweet that brought new concern – near panic, in some cases – to a party trying to stave off an all-out civil war before Nov. 8.

In another series of tweets, the Republican nominee called House Speaker Paul Ryan “weak and ineffective,” Sen. John McCain “very foul-mouthed” and “disloyal” Republicans “far more difficult than Crooked Hillary.”

“They come at you from all sides,” Trump declared. “They don’t know how to win – I will teach them!”

Rage against fellow Republicans from the face of the 2016 GOP exposed a party slipping from mere feuding into verbal warfare with advance voting already underway in roughly half the states. Polls suggest that Trump is headed toward a loss of historic proportions if he doesn’t turn things around.

His scorched-earth approach, days after his sexual predatory language caught on tape triggered a mass Republican defection, threatened

to alienate even more supporters.

“Fighting for the sake of fighting is not really very helpful,” former Trump adviser Barry Bennett said.

Trump has acknowledged the possibility of defeat in recent days, but on Tuesday he tried to shift the blame for his struggles on Republican defections and an election system that may be “rigged” against him. On Monday, he warned of potential voter fraud in heavily African-American Philadelphia, a claim for which there is no evidence but one that could challenge Americans’ faith in a fair democratic process.

At the same time, Trump’s campaign is considering whether to feature Bill Clinton accusers at his upcoming rallies. Trump shocked the political world before Sunday’s debate by appearing with several women who had accused the former president of sexual impropriety decades earlier.

The aggressive shift is in line with the philosophy of recently hired campaign chairman Steve Bannon, whose conservative website has long fueled attacks on Republican leaders and perpetuated popular conservative conspiracy theories. Bannon now is leading the campaign’s messaging.

The approach has done little to endear Trump to anxious party leaders. At least 40 Republican senators and congressmen have revoked their support for the embattled Republican nominee – with nearly 30 of them urging him to quit the race altogether.

Republican Speaker Ryan, in a Monday conference call with congressional Republicans, said he no longer would campaign with Trump. He said he would focus instead on ensuring Clinton doesn’t get a “blank check” with a Democratic-controlled Congress, all but conceding that Trump would lose the presidential contest.

Helen Elizabeth Willit, 89, died Sunday, October 9, 2016, in Belvidere at the home of her daughter, Jackie (the Straggler). She was a resident of Kirkland most of her life.

Helen was born in Kirkland on December 28, 1926, daughter of Francis and Dora (Bell) Gleason. On August 17, 1948, she married Victor Edward Willit in Franklin Park, IL. She worked as an accounting clerk at NIU for 28 years and attended Kirkland United Methodist Church.

Survivors include daughters, Barb Friday of Houston, TX, Lorene (David) Finkle of Kirkland, IL, and Jacqueline (Cliff) McDowell of Belvidere, IL; sons, Garry (Linda) Willit and Timothy (Denise) Willit both of Kirkland; son-in-law, Kevin Lyon of Kirkland; grandchildren, Jason (Anna) Friday, Josh (Angie) Friday, Scott Powell, Wendy (Chad) Merten, Kevin Powell, Michael Powell, Ryan (Tammy) Ross, Alicia Ross, Cory Ross, Brian Willit, Joanna (Johnathon) Heinsohn, David Willit, Nicholas McDowell and Mitchell McDowell; 3 step-grandchilren; and 30 great-grand-

WikiLeaks reveals Hillary Clinton to be ... reasonable

The Clinton campaign has refused to deny or confirm the authenticity of a WikiLeaks report that included apparent purloined emailed excerpts of her paid speeches to corporate audiences in the years between her departure from the State Department in 2013 and her declaration for president in 2015. We hope the excerpts are genuine – because at least in the texts made public as of Monday, the Hillary Clinton that emerges is a knowledgeable, balanced political veteran with sound policy instincts and a mature sense of how to sustain a decent, stable democracy.

With a level of self-awareness unimaginable in her opponent, Clinton described herself in one speech as “kind of far removed” from the ordinary American’s struggles because of her newfound wealth and suggested she was making a conscious effort to compensate for that. In other talks, she said she “really admire[s]” even ideological opponents willing to run for office amid the toxicity of modern politics; she noted, correctly, that the optimal situation for the United States is “two sensible, moderate, pragmatic parties.”

She also favored the bipartisan Simpson-Bowles framework for deficit reduction, in which entitlement reform would be traded for progressive tax increases, and she offered an astute, historically informed discussion of the challenges of extending health care coverage at an affordable cost.

Her comments are playing as an embarrassment for various reasons – some valid, others not. She deserves criticism for withholding the speeches thus far, as well as for pursuing corporate speaking fees with unseemly abandon in the first place. And the speeches offer further proof her election-year disavowal of the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement is an opportunistic trim, not an expression of her views.

As for the shock-horror on both the Sandersian left and the Trumpian right about her reported aspiration for a “hemispheric common market” with “open trade and open borders,” however – it’s wrongheaded and hyped. Regional free trade is well advanced already, via existing agreements with Canada, Mexico and 10 other Latin American nations. And, in context, she’s clearly not advocating unregulated immigration. Did she call on Wall Street types to “help us figure ... out” what went wrong in the Panic of 2008?

Yes. Did she promise to privilege their views or interests? No, and she even warned them it was in their own interest to face greater accountability, given public distrust of finance. Then there’s her much-maligned view “you need both a public and a private position,” which is playing as a confession of two-facedness but is actually a clumsy formulation of obvious truth: Nothing gets done in politics unless legislators can deliberate and negotiate candidly, outside the glare of publicity.

This whole episode illustrates that point. Clinton kept the speeches under wraps out of fear they would be distorted for political purposes by her populist foes. Alas, that fear was amply justified in this populistic, polarized environment, as the manufactured uproar over their release proves. The fact that Clinton’s eminently reasonable and open-minded words regarding the issues and her opponents are being treated as scandalous is the real scandal.

To the Editor: This election, the first question on the ballot – before the candidates for president – will ask Illinois voters whether the state should spend transportation taxes and fees on transportation purposes.

Many in Illinois think the taxes and fees they pay to own and operate a vehicle already are spent exclusively on transportation. But according to the Transportation for Illinois Coalition, over the past 13 years, $6.8 billion in transportation dollars have not been spent as they were intended.

The poor road conditions and aging transit system that many of us are familiar with has been exacerbated by the diversion of these funds. And it is more than an inconvenience.

Potholes have become a fact of life, and repairs are costly. A national transportation research group estimates that Illinois drivers pay $547 a year in increased

operating and repair costs because of poor pavement conditions.

Some drivers may avoid costly repairs by dodging potholes, which can lead to traffic crashes.

The lack of funding, aggravated by years of misspending in Springfield, has meant that our bridges also are in poor condition.

More than 4,200 Illinois bridges are considered to be in poor condition. The safety of a bridge is not something we should have to worry about as we are crossing it.

AAA Chicago supports the Safe Roads Amendment because we feel it is an important step to safeguarding the safety of Illinois motorists. We urge you to consider the amendment carefully and vote “yes” on the first question on the ballot in November.

– want the spotlight on them, then want a captive audience to watch as they do something that is offensive to many looking on.

The better course: Step aside from your role in the event, ask to be excused, suffer the consequences of a smaller paycheck or being outside the limelight. Then do as anyone is entitled to do – demonstrate for your cause, choose to sit or turn your back or raise your fist.

Make this your personal protest – freely exercised, but also free of the entanglements that come with being part of team or a representative of a larger entity, such as a university, that may not agree with your actions

or beliefs.

These entanglements are why two dance team members at Missouri Western State University were not due the apology recently extended by President Bob Vartabedian. In fact, you can argue the apology should have come from them.

The two students chose to take a knee during the playing of the national anthem at a Griffon home football game.

They said they told fellow dance team members but not their coach, who then communicated to them they would not be allowed to perform with the dance team the rest of the evening.

Their protest called attention to them and took attention away from the anthem, which was part of a program of activities that evening that included the dancers. They paid a price by being sanctioned by their coach. End of story, right?

Unfortunately, no. As recounted by the students, Vartabedian sought them out to apologize on behalf of the university and explain they had broken no rules.

In this instance, Vartabedian confuses support for free expression of ideas with an unjustified endorsement of behavior that required consequences.

Where will Trump’s believers go when he implodes?

I used to love “The X-Files.”

As did millions of Americans, I unfailingly followed FBI agents Mulder and Scully’s search for the truth in a labyrinth of conspiracy.

But a few years on, after one too many red herrings and blind alleys of plot, it began to be obvious to me the conspiracy never would be unraveled – never could be unraveled – because unraveling it was not the point of the show.

No, the conspiracy itself was the point, the need to maintain a sense of unsettlement and unease, of our heroes buffeted by malevolent, unseen forces.

What was once TV has now become politics.

Or has no one else noticed how the Republican candidate for president, his surrogates and his voters, have put forth a series of interlocking conspiracy theories so byzantine and confused as to make “The X-Files” seem like “Scooby-Doo” by comparison?

Combined and distilled, these theories go something like this: President Obama is a gay Kenyan Muslim who, with the transvestite Michelle

VIEWS Leonard Pitts and two kidnapped children masquerading as his family, usurped the White House and now plans to hand it off to the corrupt and murderous liar Hillary Clinton, who plotted with the Commission on Presidential Debates to schedule two of their face-offs against NFL games and who has rigged next month’s election to defeat Donald Trump and keep him from making America great again, even as his taxes are being audited because he’s a “strong Christian” and the lying media continue to treat him with unfair meanness.

There’s more, but you get the gist.

The common denominators: unsettlement and unease; our hero – and, by extension, the people he represents – buffeted by malevolent, unseen forces.

Conspiracies are not exactly unheard of in politics. Consider the meeting of GOP leaders to plot a policy of obstructionism against

President Obama, or the Democratic National Committee scheming against Bernie Sanders.

But what we are seeing in Trump is something else entirely – an utterly amoral willingness to feed and exploit a frightened paranoia unhinged from anything resembling reality.

That’s why, ultimately, the biggest object of concern here is not Trump, but his believers. Conspiracy theories very often are the way frightened people organize their fears, rationalize the fact that things are not going for them as they feel they should.

So, say Trump loses next month.

He retires to one of his trophy houses with his trophy wife, his considerable ego banged up, but otherwise none the worse for wear. Why not?

After all, for him, this crazy talk never was more than a way to work the refs, game the system, diminish his rivals. For him – as for the folks at “X-Files” – the conspiracy was both a means and an end.

But what about the people who believed this garbage, the ones for whom it was a lifeline in a world they no longer recognize or under-

stand?

What about the ones for whom it explained their anger and ennobled their resentment at a culture that has changed without their permission, a nation to which they feel less connected – and in which they feel less relevant – with every sunrise?

Where do they go, and what do they do when Donald Trump implodes?

Any hope of American cohesion requires the urgent search for a constructive answer to that question.

If current polling trends hold, the forces of paranoia and disordered thinking Trump has ridden to political relevance will be defeated next month.

But defeat is not disappearance.

And any sigh of relief if Clinton is sworn in as president would be mistaken and premature.

Because that’s when the hard part begins.

The right to freely and openly express personal views, including through peaceful protest, is a bedrock of our society. However, it should not extend to taking over an event of which you are part and making it your own.

This is why athletes protesting during the national anthem at sporting events justifiably have drawn rebuke in many quarters. Critics are misguided in suggesting the athletes are wrong about their beliefs. The real wrong is that they are trying to have it both ways.

MAPLE PARK – On “Heart Health Awareness Night” at Kaneland High School, volleyball fans in attendance had their tickers tested thanks to a pair of nail-biting sets.

The Knights had their 15-match winning streak snapped in a 25-23, 2523 home loss to Sycamore on Tuesday night.

Although the Spartans (12-18-2 overall, 2-4 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) started hot in each set, the Knights were able to scratch and claw their way back into each game. But Sycamore prevailed with a high-octane offensive attack.

Spartans coach Jessica Charles told her team it had nothing to lose and to have fun.

“Kaneland is an amazing team,” Charles said. “A lot of those girls come from clubs, and their record is what they put into their season. I told [my players] that they could either come in here and they can continue to lead the conference or we can take a match from them and make people think about us the second half of the season.”

For all of the Spartans’ firepower, the Knights found themselves in a position to win in each set. Spartans junior outside hitter Rosemary Nelson said they are getting better at closing out games.

“We need to make sure we finish,” Nelson said. “We need to know when to put a ball away, and that’s something we have struggled with, but are getting better at. Our offense played very well, but I think our defense stepped up tonight, too.”

Kaneland (23-4, 5-1 NI Big 12 East) coach Cyndi Violett said that a loss such

as this before regionals could be good for her squad’s mental focus.

“I think a loss was good for them,” Violett said. “We’ve been on this run for so long. A loss like this one gives them a reality check before regionals. We had a lot of unforced errors and a lot of balls into the net. I was pretty pleased with our defense tonight, though. We played well in that aspect. We just have to clean up the other things we did wrong going forward.”

Kaneland senior rightside hitter Chloe Filipsky attributed her team’s scrappiness to the bond among everyone on the team.

“We’re really close as a team,” Filipsky said. “We have a good connection. If someone makes a mistake, we pick them up and tell them that it’s OK. We remind each other to take it one game at a time. Today, we made a lot of unforced errors. We gotta fix that.”

The Spartans travel to Yorkville for a 6 p.m. match Thursday. The Knights trek to Morris for a 6 p.m. match Thursday.

WATERMAN – In what quickly became a physical match between both boys soccer teams, Indian Creek came out on the losing end to Harvest Christian, falling, 2-1, in a Class 1A Indian Creek Regional semifinal.

The tone of the match became apparent right away as both teams played physical on both sides of the ball. Harvest Christian’s (14-2-1) physical game it worked in its favor as it won the possession battle over Indian Creek (9-9-1).

The Lions (14-2-1) got on the board first with a goal from Cesar Velazquez, who raced past Indian Creek defenders and found the back of the net from a tough angle to give the Lions a 1-0 lead 8:02 before halftime.

Harvest Christian had seven shots on goal in the first half.

“We’ve had some positive scores in terms of winning a previous tournament and winning our conference, so the next step is winning this regional and to win the next few games,” Harvest Christian coach Sina Vidic said. “So far so good.”

Four X-factors that could determine how Hawks fare in 2016-17

mlazerus@suntimes.com Had Brent Seabrook’s booming shot late in the third period of Game 7 gone in rather than hit both goal posts, it’s not hard to envision the Blackhawks making a fourth straight deep postseason run last spring.

Instead, they had their longest offseason since the 2012 lockout.

They’re rested, hungry and still loaded with high-end talent. But these X-factors will determine just how good they can be, and just how far they can go:

ARE THE KIDS ALL RIGHT? Noteworthy: The Hawks will have a

whopping six rookies in the lineup tonight when they open the season against St. Louis. Nick Schmaltz, Tyler Motte, Vinnie Hinostroza, Ryan Hartman, Michal Kempny and Gustav Forsling bring speed and Jonathan excitement to the ice, but Toews growing pains are inevitable. The first couple of months could be a bit rocky as the new guys get settled, and in such a deep division, it could put the Hawks in an early hole. The quicker they adapt to life in the NHL, the better off the Hawks will be.

Quoteworthy: “We’re going to make mistakes, but for the most part, we’ve got a ton of skill,” Jonathan Toews said. “These young guys are really going to contribute in that way, too. … [But] for the most part, it still always comes down to our leaders and the guys who have been here for a while to play the right way and set the tone early in the season.”

DEPTH CHARGE Noteworthy: The Hawks were such a

one-line team last season that coach Joel Quenneville flirted with the idea of breaking up Artemi Panarin and Patrick Kane during camp in search of scoring balance, before thinking better of it. Toews and Marian Hossa (who is sitting on 499 goals entering the season) expect to be more productive this year than last, especially with Richard Panik now seemingly entrenched on the top line. But the bottom six features four rookies, an enforcer (Jordin Tootoo) and a third-line center (Marcus Kruger) who didn’t score a goal last season.

HEALTH CONCERNS Noteworthy: Duncan Keith’s surgically

repaired knee kept him out of the World Cup, but he’s feeling good and will be on the ice tonight. And although Quenneville said he hopes his deeper defense can spread the minutes around better, there are no plans to have Keith sit out occasionally to keep him fresh. Defensively, the Hawks are in great shape. They have eight NHL-ready defensemen, and three more – Erik Gustafsson, Viktor Svedberg and Ville Pokka – waiting in the wings in Rockford. But a thin forward group in the NHL is even thinner in the AHL. If anybody gets hurt, or struggles in the early going, the next options are Brandon Mashinter, and previously underwhelming guys such as Mark McNeill, Kyle Baun and Tanner Kero. Injuries are inevitable, and the Hawks are only equipped to handle them on the back end.

Quoteworthy: “There’s still depth,” Quenneville said of the forwards. “There are a lot of guys that give us some depth, and make it competitive, so [we don’t] just give away ice time.”

KANE HE DO IT AGAIN? Noteworthy: Yes, the Hawks need other

guys to score. But it still wouldn’t hurt if Kane dominated the way he did last season, en route to 106 points and the Hart Trophy.

Kane is capable of changing momentum and winning games almost singlehandedly – although having the similarly dynamic Panarin on his left side helps – and while Quenneville tinkers with the rest of the lineup and while the rookies get acclimated, it’s probably up to Kane to keep the Hawks afloat.

Quoteworthy: “I feel good,” Kane said.

“Took a little more time away from the rink than I usually would, but did a lot of different things off the ice to get my body right, feeling well. … You never want to lose out in the first round, or have that long offseason, but when it actually happens, you’ve got to take advantage of it.”

Maddon backed off extending the closer at that point, but in recent weeks put it back on the table for the playoffs.

Chapman said he was told to expect it, was ready for it, and didn’t have a problem being used that way Monday.

“It just wasn’t my night,” he said in Spanish through an interpreter.

The big thing Maddon seemed to have trouble getting his mind around afterward was how left-handed hitting Conor Gillespie got on top of that 101 mph fastball in the eighth to drive it to the deep-

est part of the park for the big hit.

“That was the anomaly moment,” said Maddon, who doesn’t seem ready to abandon Chapman as a potential eighth-inning weapon.

“As long as he’s well rested and it appears to be the right thing to do in that moment,” he said, “I don’t think we could walk away from it.”

SAN FRANCISCO – Anthony Rizzo has been something of a no-show to this Cubs postseason party, and that’s not a good thing for a team struggling to score runs.

It’s not too late to join in, however, with at least one more playoff game left for the Cubs, who would welcome some production from their MVP candidate who was 6 for 32 with two homers and two RBIs in the 2015 wild-card round, NLDS and NLCS and was 0 for 13 heading into Game

4 of this NLDS against the Giants.

“It’s just baseball,” Rizzo said. “Obviously, not the best three games to start off, but I’ll get back [at it].”

Cubs manager Joe Maddon came to Rizzo’s defense before the Cubs went for a series-clinching victory in Game 4 on Tuesday night at AT&T Park. Maddon said Giants pitchers are “targeting his patience” at the plate.

Rizzo singled in the fourth inning Tuesday.

“That’s what I’m seeing,” Maddon said. “He’s just got to be more patient. Just make

them come to him a little bit more. I think they’ve chosen to not really challenge him right now.”

Everything is magnified in short series, and Rizzo wants to do more. Through the first three games, his signature TV Anthony Rizzo m o m e n t w a s that exuberant free-for-all in the middle of the Cubs’ dugout after pitcher Jake Arrieta hit a threerun homer against Madison Bumgarner to give the Cubs

a 3-0 lead. Problem is, Arrieta and fellow Cubs pitchers Kyle Hendricks (two-run single in Game 2) and Travis Wood (homer in Game 2) combined to drive in six of the Cubs’ 11 runs in the first three games.

The combination of Giants pitchers being careful with Rizzo, who offers protection for Kris Bryant, and Rizzo’s good batting eye has limited the number of good pitches to hit, Maddon said.

Rizzo, who walked 74 times during the regular season, did take a walk from left-hander Matt Moore in the first inning of Game 4, so perhaps that was

a start. Moore struck out Dexter Fowler and Kris Bryant to open the game, then got Ben Zobrist on a slow roller to second for the third out.

“Anthony doesn’t need more batting practice. He doesn’t need more information,” Maddon said. “Just needs to stay within his strike zone, which he’s very good at. At the end of the day, if he learns or just accepts more walks, he might see a better pitch, or there might just be that moment in the game where they are forced to pitch to him. It appears to me they have chosen to not pitch to him.”

SAN FRANCISCO – Even after sleeping on it, Cubs manager Joe Maddon didn’t second-guess his decision to bring closer Aroldis Chapman into Monday night’s Game 3 with two on and nobody out in the eighth inning, with a one-run lead.

“To have the game go away and not utilize him there, to at least try, to me that would have been the mistake,” the manager said of the moment that turned into a blown save in an eventual 13-inning loss.

Aroldis But that doesn’t Chapman mean he’ll be so quick to bring the All-Star closer in with men on base, or in the eighth inning, next time around.

“It just depends,” said Maddon, who recalled Chapman’s first blown save with the Cubs after an eighth-inning call, July 30.

It was the second time that week Maddon called on Chapman for a would-be four-out save, after which Chapman told media he wasn’t as comfortable with that as a ninth-inning save situation.

The Cubs had only one man left in their seven-man bullpen by the time Monday’s 13-inning game finished – and that was with Mike Montgomery pitching the final four-plus innings.

“We talked about this exact scenario before we even did this [round’s roster],” Maddon said. “So it could (influence the next round).”

Notes: Home runs by Travis Wood and Jake Arrieta in Games 2 and 3 made the Cubs the first team since the 1924 Giants to have two pitchers hit home runs in a postseason series. … He didn’t get the decision Monday, but Cubs starter Arrieta remained unbeaten in seven starts in California over the past two years when he handed a 3-2 lead to the bullpen (6-0, 0.53 ERA, 51 innings). … The Cubs bullpen didn’t allow a run to the Giants in nine-plus meetings this year until Monday’s eighth inning.

Rose says he suspected ‘rape’ setup soon after act

LOS ANGELES – The night after Derrick Rose and two of his friends had sex with his ex-girlfriend, he had a hunch she was going to claim they raped her, the NBA star testified Tuesday.

Rose said he became suspicious of the woman when she texted later the same day of the alleged attack in August 2013 to say how inebriated she had been and to describe burns she claimed she got on her hands from a fire pit outside his Beverly Hills house. Rose said he believed she was sober and never witnessed any burns the night before.

“It looked like a setup,” Rose said. “It turned out to be what I thought.”

Rose was testifying for a second day in the $21.5 million lawsuit that claims he and his friends had sex without the woman’s consent when she was incapacitated from drinking and, possibly, drugs.

The woman claims the three entered her apartment and had sex with her while she was blacked out after drinking tequila at Rose’s rental house earlier.

Rose said the woman was sober and he assumed consent based on their past, a text message she sent out of the blue that morning saying he made her “horny” and her behavior throughout the day and night.

Rose testified he was raised by a single mother, who was his mentor and had taught him to respect women.

When asked by his own lawyer, he said he was nervous at the deposition and he defined “consent” as both parties being in agreement. He said the woman had consented all the previous times they had sex over an 18- to 20-month period.

NHL enhances concussion protocol by hiring staff of spotters NEW YORK – The NHL is adding a staff of spotters to better help identify players who might have suffered a concussion and have them removed from games for evaluation.

In an enhancement of its concussion protocol, the league announced the spotters will monitor all game broadcasts from the NHL’s headquarters in New York. The spotters are certified athletic trainers who have hockey experience and educated in identifying signs of potential concussions.

They will have the authority to contact teams directly to have players removed during a game. The players will not be allowed to return until being cleared by the team’s medical staff.

Vegetable stand-ins for carbs have hit the mainstream

the annals of the world’s biggest lies, somewhere in the vicinity of “I did not have sexual relations with that woman” and “I was totally against the war in Iraq,” ranks this whopper: “Zucchini noodle recipes will make you forget all about pasta.”

No, when people twirl long green strings of zucchini on their forks, pasta probably will be on the minds of all but the strictest Paleo diet adherents.

Of course we all want to eat more vegetables. We apparently just don’t want our plates to look so ... vegetabley.

That’s why low-carb bloggers and eaters, including diabetics, have longbeen replicating their favorite starchy dishes with vegetable stand-ins. Grated cauliflower resembles rice and also can be baked as a pizza crust. If you squint really hard, a slice of sweet potato can be toast.

And if you use a kitchen device called a spiralizer, you can twist zucchini and squash into fettuccine or linguine noodles. (Or you can use a spaghetti squash – it’s nature’s spiralizer!)

They have a cutesy name, zoodles – or in the United Kingdom, where zucchini are called courgettes, it’s courgetti. They’ve even received the ultimate stamp of celebrity approval: Khloe Kardashian

tweeted a recipe for zucchini noodle pad Thai, claiming it was “just as good as pasta.” But without that comparison, it seems we’re less inclined to eat vegetables for vegetables’ sake, no matter how prettily we whittle them down. The war against carbohydrates is one of ascetic virtues, and it cannot be won without replacing our most decadent culinary pleasures.

This year, the category is booming: Searches for cauliflower rice recipes on Pinterest are up 135 percent year over year, and searches for spiralizer recipes are up 264 percent. Google search interest in cauliflower rice increases apace each year, except for the week of Dec. 25 through Jan. 1, when everyone is indulging in holiday treats. (Immediately after, it spikes again: New Year’s resolutions.)

Cookbook authors are hopping on the bandwagon, with books such as Martha Rose Shulman’s “Spiralize This!” and Denise Smart’s “Spiralize Now!,” because if anything’s worthy of an exclamation point, it’s tubular vegetables.

But because these food hacks can be a lot of work, grocery stores and home goods manufacturers are rushing to meet consumers’ needs for convenience and novelty – and they’re banking on the idea the low-carb crowd will pay for the privilege. Trader Joe’s frozen riced cauliflower is flying off the shelves. Wegmans, too, has a house version, and

Green Giant is diving into the market. And Whole Foods sells spiralized zucchini and squash and riced cauliflower in its produce section.

“If this gets people to eat more vegetables, and they’re willing to pay for the convenience, it’s a good idea,” said Michelle Tam, author of “Nom Nom Paleo.” At the same time, she admitted when she first heard about the mainstream Green Giant line jumping on the trend, “I was like, ‘Ugh.’ ” Even though we can make vegetables look like pasta or rice, though, that doesn’t mean we will prefer them over the high-carb version. There are issues of taste and texture: Homemade zucchini noodles can be watery. And then there’s what Tam politely refers to as cauliflower’s sulfurous smell.

People also might be turned off by bloggers who experiment with carb swaps to varying degrees of success. One blog recommends hollowing out a cucumber and filling it with lunchmeat and cheese to make a “sub.” Not only is it impractical – won’t the fillings squish out into your lap? – it is the saddest-looking sub you will ever see.

Vegetable pasta just takes some getting used to, Tam said. And it’s a sneaky way to get more vegetables into your kids’ diets, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Or we just prepare it in an unhealthful way – a fact that has not escaped Sklar.

“People say, ‘I’m going to eat better, I’m going to get the better-for-you saturated fat, 0 mg cholesterol, 510 mg sodium, product,’ but when they are at the store, 9 g dietary fiber, 9 g sugar. they get the indulgent product,” he said.

Cauliflower rice can be both. “They buy Onion Fritters With Middle this product and they say, ‘I’m going Eastern Spice Mix to do something really good,’ but then 4 to 6 servings they bring it home and say, ‘I’m going to make a pizza out of it.’ ”

Celeriac Pasta With Chickpeas and Marinara Sauce 4 servings

Kosher salt 2 pounds celeriac (celery root), peeled 1 cup homemade or store-bought marinara sauce 1 tablespoon minced flat-leaf parsley or fresh basil 15 ounces cooked or canned, no-salt-added chickpeas (1½ cups; drained and rinsed if you’re using canned) 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil Freshly shaved or grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, for serving Bring a large pot of water to a boil over high heat. Add a generous pinch or two of salt.

Meanwhile, use the shredder (“noodle”) blade to spiralize the celeriac, gathering it in a mixing bowl as you work. Use kitchen scissors to cut very long strands into shorter lengths as needed.

Heat the marinara sauce in a large sauté pan over medium-low heat; once it’s warmed through, stir in the parsley or basil.

Add the celeriac noodles to the pot of boiling water; cook for 1½ minutes, then drain and immediately add to the sauté pan, along with the chickpeas and oil. Taste, and add salt as needed. Toss to coat evenly, then divide among individual wide, shallow bowls.

Top each portion with the Parmigiano-Reggiano. Serve right away.

For the seasoning mix: 2 tablespoons whole coriander seed 1 tablespoon whole cumin seed 1/2 cup roasted, unsalted peanuts, very finely chopped 1/4 cup roasted sesame seeds 2 teaspoons nigella seed 1 teaspoon ground sumac 1/2 teaspoon kosher or coarse sea salt

Whisk together the cornstarch, the corn flour or cornmeal, salt and cumin in a separate bowl, then whisk in the sparkling water to form a smooth batter. Stir in the cilantro and the 3 tablespoons of seasoning mix.

Heat about 3 inches of the oil in a wok or deep saute pan over medium-high heat to 375 degrees. Line a baking sheet with several layers of paper towels, then seat a wire rack over them.

Take up a small clump of the onions (wind

them together, if you like) and dip it into the batter, making sure to coat it thoroughly. Carefully transfer to the hot oil; fry for a minute or two, until golden brown, using tongs or another tool to turn over the fritter for even cooking.

Use a skimmer or slotted spoon to transfer the fritter to the rack. Season lightly with coarse salt, if you like.

Repeat to cook all the onions; discard any leftover batter. Serve right away.

For the fritters: 1 pound red or yellow onions 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons cornstarch 7 tablespoons corn flour or finely ground cornmeal 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt 3/4 teaspoon ground cumin 1 cup cold sparkling water 1/3 cup finely chopped cilantro Canola or grapeseed oil, for frying Coarse salt, for sprinkling (optional)

For the seasoning mix: Toast the coriander and cumin seeds separately in a small, dry skillet over medium-low heat until fragrant, transferring them to a dedicated spice grinder or mini food processor to cool.

Grind them, then add the peanuts, the sesame and nigella seeds, sumac and salt; pulse just until well incorporated. The yield is about 2/3 cup. You’ll need 3 tablespoons for this recipe; the rest can be refrigerated for up to 1 month.

For the fritters: Use the chipper (coarse shredder) blade or the “noodle” shredder blade to process the onions. Place them in a mixing bowl and cover with cold water. Let stand for Nutrition information per serving: 230 calories, 5 minutes, then drain, rinse and pat dry with 9 g protein, 37 g carbohydrates, 7 g fat, 1 g paper towels.

This phase lasts three to six months.

The maintenance phase begins after reaching the full dosage. During this period, patients are injected on a monthly basis for up to three to five years.

As with any kind of treatment, allergy shots may not work for everyone, and they are not recommended for people with certain risk factors. These include some types of heart disease and severe, poorly controlled asthma.

If you are uneasy about injections, immunotherapy options that can be taken by mouth are available for certain allergies. They also are less likely to cause side effects than allergy shots and can be taken at home after your first dose in the doctor’s office. Oral immunotherapy is fairly new, and it still is not clear which therapy – injected or oral – is better.

The main question most of my patients ask when considering allergy immunotherapy is how much time it will take. As you can see from my description of what’s involved, it does involve many visits to the doctor’s office. Only you can trade off the amount of time it is going to take against the importance of reducing your allergy symptoms.

Dear Dr. K: I’m plagued by seasonal allergies. Should I consider immunotherapy?

Dear Reader: Many people know all too well the misery of allergies – the sneezing, runny nose, postnasal drip, watery eyes and itchy throat. They try to fight back with allergy medications. But immunotherapy, also known as allergy shots, may be a better option.

I spoke to my colleague Dr. Paul Hesterberg, an instructor in medicine in the allergy and clinical immunology unit at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. He noted people often resist allergy shots because they fear injections and turn to them only as a last resort. But the shots can be an effective way to control symptoms that interfere with daily life.

They also can help reduce dependence on allergy drugs.

Allergy shots will not eliminate your allergy. They change your immune response to better tolerate it. Medication treats symptoms; allergy shots help prevent the symptoms from occurring in the first place.

The shots are given with a small needle, just under the skin – not deep into the muscle. Sometimes there is temporary tenderness and redness at the spot where the shot has been given. On very rare occasions, there is a serious reaction called anaphylaxis that can cause a drop in blood pressure and breathing problems.

A recent study of adults ages 65 to 75 found allergy shots reduced symptoms by 55 percent after three years of therapy. The study also showed the amount of medication this group needed to relieve symptoms dropped by 64 percent.

Shots are available for certain pollens, dust mites, mold, cat and dog hair and insect stings. There is no proof they work for food or drug allergies.

That occurs at the bridge table when a player, usually the declarer, decides, for example, that he needs a suit to split favorably or a finesse to work, when in fact he can make his contract despite a bad break or a losing finesse.

What should South do in six hearts after West leads the spade nine?

When North raised hearts, South decided that slam could be anything from hopeless to laydown, and seeing no way to find out for sure, he went for the jackpot.

South starts with 11 top tricks: seven hearts, one diamond, two clubs and a club ruff on the board. So, naturally, he thought that he needed the diamond finesse. However, East’s bid had reduced the chance that that finesse would succeed. All of a sudden, he saw the winning line, which just assumed that West had led top of nothing.

Instead of making the natural play of covering the spade nine with dummy’s jack, South played a low spade and ruffed in his hand.

He drew trumps and eliminated the clubs (king, ace, ruff). Then he led the spade queen from the board, and when East covered with his ace, declarer discarded a diamond. What could East have done now?

If he led a club (conceding a ruffand-sluff) or a diamond (into the acequeen), South would have claimed.

When he tried exiting with a low spade, declarer pitched another diamond from his hand and won with dummy’s jack. Slam bid and made, naturally.
