Presidential campaign’s hidden POLL messages are troublesome

YESTERDAY’S RESULTS How good a speller are you?

My two oldest daughters have become interested in the presidential race, and so the whole family sat down to watch Sunday’s debate on TV. I’m glad to see them taking an interest in current events. But this debate – this campaign – of late it has been about as family-friendly as an episode of HBO’s “Game of Thrones.”

In the run-up to the debate at Washington University in St. Louis, CBS News talked about Donald Trump’s vulgar remarks about women, transitioning into talking about the predebate news conference Trump held with women who claim they are victims of sexual assault by former President Bill Clinton.

Just great.

By the second question, Trump naturally was confronted about those comments he made about women in 2005, in specific terms, by debate moderator Anderson Cooper.

“You bragged that you sexually assaulted women,” Cooper said to Trump.

Trump denied that, apologized, then shifted to talking about ISIS chopping off people’s heads and drowning them in cages, later promising to “knock the hell out of ISIS.” There were points at which I felt the need to distract the children from what was being said on screen. I never thought I’d have to do that during a town hall-style presidential debate between the two leading candidates to lead the free world.

It’s pathetic, really. I will give the candidates some points for at times trying to discuss policy. But there’s been so much talk about sexual assault, sexual abuse, rape allegations … sometimes it feels like a criminal trial.

I hope that seeing a woman competing in (and likely winning) the race for president will inspire my daughters – and girls everywhere – to chase even their loftiest dreams. But I worry that they’ll get other messages from this campaign, too.

Such as that someone can rape you and still become president of the United States. Or that a man can say vile and disrespectful things about women and still expect people to vote for him to be president. Or that even if your husband is a philanderer, the way to get ahead in life is to stick with him.

Or maybe, if you compete with a man for a position of power, it’s OK for him to interrupt, bully and threaten you. (Although I do think Hillary has set a good example of how to deal with this nonsense.)

As a parent, I know it’s my job to counteract those messages if they get through.

The shame of it is that they’re coming from a presidential race that I imagine has captured the interest of girls around the country.

Then came Michigan’s 78-0 drubbing of Rutgers on Saturday, its largest margin of victory since an 85-0 win in 1939 over the University of Chicago.

But the Facebook posting capped the discount at 50 percent and said the offer does not include alcohol.

The restaurant posted on its website Sunday that it was “fully committed with reservations” through Thursday, when the offer expires.

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The race for DeKalb County state’s attorney likely will be the most watched countywide contest in the November election.

Incumbent DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack is campaigning on his record, attempting to fend off a challenge from candidate Rick Amato, a Republican who is counting on door-todoor campaigning and support from law enforcement to unseat his opponent.

Both candidates were on the campaign trail Monday, with the courthouse closed for Columbus Day. The two lawyers have widely divergent views on some issues, but they share common ground on others.

For example, both candidates are concerned about the heroin problem in DeKalb County and support treatment for addicts rather than incarceration. They also both support the use of specialty courts, such as drug court and mental health courts.

Amato beat out two other candidates for the Republican nomination in the spring.

During that contest, Amato steered clear of criticizing Schmack. Recently, he has taken direct aim at the incumbent. Amato said he has the endorsement of two police unions – those representing Sycamore police and DeKalb County sheriff’s deputies.

“I plan on re-establishing the State’s Attorney’s Office as a dynamic member of a law enforcement team that DeKalb County can be proud of,” Amato said in response to a questionnaire from the Daily Chronicle. “I plan on running an office that is centered on service to our community.”

If elected, he also said he plans to “reinstate a full felony review process.” He said Schmack’s office doesn’t have such a process in place.

“Without a proper procedure, cases are often overcharged, resulting in cases pending for long periods of time, only to have the charges eventually lowered to a less serious charge or dismissed, which devalues the seriousness of the offenses,” Amato said. “A thorough felony review process will help alleviate overcharging and make sure that our community is being justly served.”

Schmack disputed the notion that Amato was the clear choice of law enforcement.

“I have support from many law enforcement officers,” he said during an interview Monday. “I feel like we have a good

He said that the state’s attorney’s office can’t always work in “lockstep with law enforcement” and that there are occasional disagreements about charging decisions and other issues. However, he said his office works well with police agencies.

Schmack, a Democrat, also said that his office does have a felony review process and that cases aren’t being consistently overcharged.

He said suggested charges from police are reviewed daily by prosecutors. In some cases, charges may be amended as more information comes to light after an arrest, as he said it would be unethical for prosecutors to knowingly file charges that they had no chance of proving.

DeKalb council OKs 1st reading of sign request

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Aldermen changed city code Monday to pave the way for likely granting a special digital sign request by Brian Bemis Toyota, but the City Council members are using the issue to begin a broader look at the sign ordinances.

“Digital signs along these busy corridors play an important role for the success of these types of business,” said Jo Ellen Charlon, principal planner for the city. “But staff also suggests that it’s important to impose certain operational condi-

tions so these signs don’t become a distraction to passing motorists.”

The owners of Brian Bemis Toyota want to erect a 10-foot digital sign on the dealership’s grounds at 1890 Sycamore Road. But the previous city ordinance didn’t allow for the special use requested.

Aldermen voted, 6-0, at the City Council meeting to approve changing city rules, and gave the same nod to make the adjustment on the first reading of the proposal.

But when it came to considering the dealership’s actual request, at least one alderman didn’t favor granting it just for the one business

owner.

“I am leery to jump into this one, only because we have very explicitly prohibited it elsewhere. And to give a single amendment for a single business, I think opens a can of worms we’re not prepared for,” 1st Ward Alderman Dave Jacobson said.

He added that adopting a rule for Bemis’ sake “sets a bad precedent” for aldermen.

Nevertheless, the council approved the request, 5-1, on first reading, and the issue is scheduled to come before aldermen for final consideration at the Oct. 24 meeting. Jacobson was the only no vote.

If the proposal ends up approved, Bemis would be allowed to put up the monument-style sign with a static message that displays for 20 seconds at a time. Lighting levels would be restricted, and the ads on the sign could only promote the dealership and no other businesses, among other provisions.

The dealership went through the city’s planning and zoning committee, which approved the request, but it doesn’t qualify for a special use; however, aldermen could change city language at Monday’s City Council meeting that would help accommodate the Bemis request.

Residents should rake leaves into loose piles toward the back edge of the curb so city crews can vacuum them up. The city

advises residents not to rake leaves into the street to prevent traffic problems and flooding. Residents also are advised not to rake leaves near catch basins, culvert pipes or into ditches, as this also may cause flooding.

Crews will not pick up leaf piles if they

contain branches, brush, grass clippings, animal waste or other debris, or if the piles are blocked by parked vehicles.

Leaf pickup is done on a rotating basis, and residents should rake early and often to ensure their leaves are taken.

ALLEN DAVIS

Born: September 27, 1955 Died: September 30, 2016

and twinkling blue eyes that brought a smile to all that knew her. Many friends, colleagues, relatives, and even strangers were near and dear to her. Her two great loves are Molly and Jackson. A close third was her love of antiques and vintage items. She would combine her treasures with her artistic talent to always design and decorate with her special flair. Marie will be deeply missed and loved by all. Give Mom a hug from us all.

Memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 2:00pm at Finch Funeral Home in DeKalb with Pastor Elizabeth Mascal of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in DeKalb officiating. Cremation will be handled by the Finch Crematory. Burial of cremains will be in the Urn Garden at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb at a later date. Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2016 from 11:00am until the time of service at the funeral home.

Allen “Al” Davis of Copperas Cove, TX. Formally of DeKalb, IL, passed away at his home on Friday, September 30th surrounded by his family. Al was 61 years old.

He was born September 27th 1955, to Azel and Aloha Davis at Sycamore, IL. In 1975, he met and married his wife, Jean of 41 years they had 4 children, Jeremy, Jesse, Angela, and Ashleigh.

Al worked in transportation for over 30 years in Dekalb starting with Longs Bus Co and ending with Transdev Transportation. It gave him great pleasure to encourage others to become part of the transportation industry, he started as a driver and rose to became a very well respected manager within Transdev. Al loved his job and the people that he worked with, He believed that respect and courtesy returned to those that used them and that is how he treated all that he met. In preparation for retirement Al transferred to the state of Texas, which he loved. Soon after transferring to San Marcos TX he was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer.

Al is proceeded in death by his parents, 3 aunts and an uncle.

He leaves his wife, Jean; his brother; 4 children; 4 grandchildren; and many cousins and JAMES M. LAHEY friends to mourn his passing.

She was born January 8, 1963 and was the beloved daughter of William and Lillian (Schanley) DeBauche.

She was a devoted and loving mother of Molly Marie Humes (Milo Barsanti-Gonzalez) and Jackson Calvin Humes (Jennifer Tull). Marie was a special sister to Nanette (Bob) Neu, Jenny (James) O’Dierno, Robert DeBauche, Kathleen Craft, and Karen (David) Milroy.

Marie was the love of James Humes, former husband of 15 years who shared many warm memories with her and their two children.

Francis Vanderstappen who brought light into her life, and most recently James Cardine who brought her peace and serenity in her final days.

She was a favorite Aunt to several nieces and nephews; Jennifer (Rich) Kohls, Michael Lenz, Michael (Stephanie) DeBauche, Christina Neu (Jeremy Graham), Casi O’Dierno, Nicholas Henson (Chrystal Foshe), Jessalin Fant-Craft, Matthew Jacobsen, Mitchell Jacobsen, Thomas (Briel) Milroy, and “Auntie M” was very special to her great-niece Kennedy Henson.

Marie graduated Magna Cum Laude from Kishwaukee College with a degree as a Radiographer. She worked at many hospitals and facilities in the area. She had an infectious smile

Ned R. Rolston, 75, of Hampshire passed away

Sunday, Oct. 9, 2016 in his home.

He was born Feb. 6, 1941 in Dixon, IL the son of Owen and Garnet (Fitzsimmons) Rolston.

Ned was a lifelong Hampshire resident and was a member of the 1959 Class of Dundee High School. He received an associate’s degree from Kishwaukee Community College and was proud to be nominated and selected to the Illinois Agricultural Leadership Program (IALP) for a 2 year scholarship.

Ned was a longtime farmer in the Hampshire and Genoa areas retiring in 1990. Ned loved sports and had been an excellent athlete and served as an officer for Little League Baseball.

He was always supportive of education and served 6 years on the District 300 School Board, several years as Vice President. He also served on the ECC Foundation Board and on the Board of the IALP. When he turned 60 he took up flying light planes, a passion that he truly loved.

Surviving are his loving wife, Karen (nee Johnson) whom he married Aug. 4, 1962 in Lily Lake; son, Lindsey Rolston of Fortville, IN; daughter, Shannon (Scott) Dalby of Hampshire; four grandchildren, Korey Ryan, Yanah Rolston, Drew and Allie Dalby; a sister, Rita Carls of El Dorado Hills, CA; sister in law, Vicki (Larry) Linden of Elburn; a niece and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a nephew, Chad Johnson; and a great nephew, Hunter Johnson.

Public visitation will be held on Thursday, Oct. 13 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Fredrick Funeral Home, 284 Park St., Hampshire.

Results of the poll released Monday match those of previous polls by other firms, as well as both statewide and local data that show Illinois losing people to other states.

A Gallup poll released in 2014 concluded that 50 percent of Illinois residents would leave if they could – the state ranked first of all 50 for people who want out – and about 20 percent said they likely would move in the coming year. One resident in four called Illinois the worst state in which to live.

Both polls were conducted before the particularly bad “polar vortex” winter.

And residents are in fact voting with their feet. From government data to statistics shared by truck rental companies, Illinois has been at or near the top in recent years for people moving elsewhere.

For the first time, the annual loss

of Illinois residents to outmigration reached six figures, according to U.S. Census data. About 105,200 more people left Illinois than arrived between July 2014 and July 2015, essentially the same as if everyone in DeKalb County left the state. An influx of 37,600 international immigrants, and a natural population growth of 52,207 pared the Land of Lincoln’s total population loss to 22,194 people.

Illinois led all 50 states in overall population loss during that time period. A 2015 analysis by the Center for Governmental Studies at Northern Illinois University cast some doubts on weather being a primary motivator – it found that most people leaving Illinois are settling in its neighboring states.

DeKalb County’s population dropped 0.3 percent from July 2014 to July 2015, and 0.8 percent since the 2010 U.S. Census, according to annual Census Bureau estimates. The county’s population in July 2015 was estimated at 104,352, 808 fewer than the 105,160

counted in 2010.

The largest population decline during the year-over-year period was seen in Cook County, which census estimated lost 10,488 people. The county with the largest percentage decline was Alexander County in southern Illinois, which borders Missouri. Its population declined an estimated 4.5 percent.

The Simon poll also found that 57 percent of people younger than 35 want to leave, while 58 percent of people between 35 and 50 want to leave. Only 29 percent of adults 66 or older want to leave.

“Policymakers argue over whether people are leaving or not,” Yepsen said. “The most troubling finding in this poll is that so many younger people are thinking about it. That’s the state’s future.”

Again, this finding mirrors a similarly disturbing conclusion reached locally.

“Community supervision under probation remains the proper and safe sentence for almost all nonviolent offenders,” Schmack said. “Unfortunately, roughly 10 percent of probationers are chronically noncompliant. They are a giant drag on the court system, clogging the felony calendar with unending violation hearings.

“Judges, prosecutors, public defenders and police are impeded from moving forward with speedy trials on new and more serious cases. These

delays threaten public safety. For the past two years, I have been advocating that DeKalb County institute a vigorously monitored probation system like the HOPE Program utilized statewide in Hawaii.”

In addition to other initiatives, Amato said he would make training a priority.

“I will put a great emphasis on training and education to have an office that is fundamentally sound and cutting edge with its prosecutions and programs,” he said.

About half of Illinois residents would rather move out of state than stay, with one in five saying they see themselves moving in the coming year, according to a new poll.

The poll of 1,000 Illinois voters conducted by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale concluded that 47 percent would like to move, and 51 percent would prefer to remain, with 2 percent undecided. Twenty percent of those polled said it was likely they would leave Illinois in 2017.

Twenty-seven percent cited taxes as the primary reason they would like to leave, 16 percent the weather, 15 percent the government and 13 percent job and education opportunities. Only 10 percent of those polled believe that the state is on the right track – 84 percent believe the state is headed in the wrong direction.

“There are lots of reasons why people want to leave. Not much can be done about the weather, but policymakers can do something about perceptions about the quality of services, tax competitiveness, tax fairness and educational and job opportunities. People often don’t feel they get good value for their tax dollars, and with frequent

Poll: Half of state residents want to leave

2 men facing first-degree murder charges set to appear in court today

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Two men charged in the fatal shooting of a 25-year-old man outside an apartment building on Kimberly Drive are being held on $5 million bond and are scheduled to appear in court today.

David Walls, 18, of Chicago, and Nico Griggs, 27, of Park Forest, are charged with first-degree murder and aggravated unlawful use of a firearm in connection with the shooting death of Debrece Shields.

Police responded about 10:30 p.m.

Thursday to calls of a person being shot in the 800 block of Kimberly

Drive, according to a DeKalb Police Department news release. The victim was found on the ground in the parking lot behind a multiunit apartment building at 820 Kimberly Drive.

The news release and video published online by witnesses on the scene show that emergency responders administered CPR to the victim, who was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital where officials said he was pronounced dead.

Police said the deceased was associated with addresses in DeKalb and Chicago.

“This crime does not appear to be a random act,” police said.

“None of the people that were engaged in the memorial batted an eye or fled the scene as the shots rang out,” Lowery said.

But police have not identified who fired the weapon, and as a result, no arrests in that incident have been made, Lowery said.

Man charged with knowingly passing HIV

WILMETTE – A personal trainer from Wilmette has been charged with knowingly transmitting HIV to three women he dated.

Jimmy Amutavi, 46, has been charged with three counts of criminal transmission of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, the Chicago Tribune reported Monday.

Amutavi was diagnosed with HIV as early as 2001, Cook County prosecutors said. But despite the diagnosis, Amutavi repeatedly had unprotected sex with the women and then denied he had the virus when confronted, prosecutors allege.

They also said he began monthslong dating relationships with each of the women while working as their personal trainer between April 2015 and this year.

Amutavi’s attorney argued that his client had been taking retroviral medication that made it almost impossible for him to transmit HIV. Cook County Judge Laura Sullivan has barred him from contacting any of the victims.

Amutavi is being held on $150,000 bail. He will return to court next week and faces three to seven years in prison for each charge.

Survey: Farmers worry about feral hog numbers

CHAMPAIGN – A new study of Illinois farmers has found that they are worried about property damage caused by feral hogs.

Researchers from the Illinois Natural History Survey said Monday that they reviewed surveys from more than 3,000 Illinois farmers. The study found that 84 percent of the surveyed farmers in Illinois agree that feral hogs should be eliminated whenever possible.

Feral hogs were once only in the southern U.S. but have spread and are now in 12 Illinois counties, most in the southern part of the state.

Survey scientist Craig Miller said the animals are known to damage

9 soil and water quality and destroy agricultural crops.

The survey found farmers trapping and eliminating the hogs instead of hunting them. Miller said that’s because hunters may hit one or two hogs and the rest scatter.

K-9 dogs to help find child porn offenders

KANKAKEE – Will County has enlisted a specially trained dog to help officers track child pornography.

Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow is using money seized from criminal activities to pay for a black Labrador named Cache to be trained to detect hidden electronic devices.

Glasgow said it’s a first in the state of Illinois.

Cache and his handler, Investigator Megan Brooks, will go to training this month. The dog will join the High Technology Crimes Unit in November.

The Daily Journal in Kankakee reported that child porn suspects often try to hide digital storage devices and dogs such as Cache can help sniff them out.

The county also has four therapy dogs available for child abuse victims.

U.S. judge denies media access to trial evidence

CHICAGO – A U.S. judge in the racketeering trial of six purported Hobos street-gang leaders has refused media access to photographs and other evidence even after it’s shown in open court to jurors.

Judge John Tharp Jr. ruling denies a Chicago Tribune request to release exhibits once they’re entered into evidence. Some evidence includes photos of victims allegedly killed by the gang.

Tharp has ordered jurors not to follow any media coverage of the case.

But he says in his ruling posted last week that he fears jurors wouldn’t be able to avert their eyes from sensational, front-page treatment of evidence and that that could undermine defendants’ fair-trial rights.

The Tribune argued there’s a strong presumption in favor of granting access because reporters are “the eyes and the ears of the public.”

Chicago teachers prepare for strike; talks continue

CHICAGO – The president of the Chicago Teachers Union said late Monday the union was reviewing a new contract proposal from Chicago Public Schools, but it was too early to say if it would be enough to avert a Tuesday morning strike in the nation’s third-largest school district.

Union President Karen Lewis described the offer as “significantly better” than the one the financially struggling CPS made and the union rejected earlier this year.

She declined to outline the proposal, but said the district had addressed a lot of the issues the union has raised.

The CTU has directed its roughly 28,000 members to report to picket lines Tuesday morning unless they hear otherwise from union negotiators, who have said negotiations could continue until midnight.

All 652 schools will be open during normal school hours for the district’s 400,000 students if there is a strike, CPS said. It would be the district’s second major strike since 2012.

Asked what she would tell parents who are staying up late to find out what will happen, Lewis apologized, saying the union received the written proposal from CPS less than two hours before the 10 p.m. news conference and negotiators were going through it line-by-line.

“I’m always optimistic,” she said. “I would say this: Prepare for the worst and pray for the best.”

The two sides held negotiations throughout the weekend. On Monday afternoon, teachers picked up strike placards and painted banners. Earlier in the day, parents and other supporters rallied across from Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s home.

“Nobody wants to go on strike, but I think the teachers finally said, ‘Enough is enough,’ ” said Nate Rasmussen, a preschool teacher at Beasley Elementary School on the city’s South Side. He said the district’s 2013 closing of some 50 schools, layoffs of thousands of teachers in recent years and other spending cuts have made the job tougher.

Teachers have been without a contract since June 2015. The union wants no cuts to salary or benefits and an additional $200 million – or $500 per student – in spending to ensure adequate staffing and “to accommodate the needs of our children,” Lewis said on Friday.

CPS has said it is working within the framework of a January offer, which included pay increases and a cap on privately operated charter schools but would require teachers to contribute more to their pension costs. The union turned it down in February.

CPS officials say the district is facing serious financial constraints because of soaring pension costs and a flawed state school funding formula.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said Monday that both sides were trying to find a way to ensure school is in session Tuesday.

WASHINGTON – House Speaker Paul Ryan, the nation’s top elected Republican, effectively abandoned Donald Trump Monday, telling anxious fellow lawmakers he will not campaign for or defend the foundering businessman in the election’s closing weeks. Pro-Trump members rebelled in anger, accusing Ryan of conceding the election to Hillary Clinton.

Indeed, Ryan said he would devote his energy to ensuring Clinton doesn’t get a “blank check” as president with a Democratic-controlled Congress, according to people on his private conference call with GOP House members.

While the Wisconsin Republican did not formally rescind his own tepid endorsement of Trump, he told lawmakers they were free to do just that and fight for their own re-election.

Trump fired back on Twitter, saying Ryan “should spend more time on balancing the budget, jobs and illegal immigration and not waste his time on fighting the Republican nominee.”

Trump retained the backing of the Republican National Committee, which has overseen crucial field efforts for the candidate in battleground states. On a conference call with RNC members, chairman Reince Priebus said the party remains in full coordination with Trump.

“Everything is on course,” Priebus said, according to a participant in the call.

Still, Ryan’s announcement underscored the perilous predicament Republicans find themselves in one month from Election Day. Recent revelations of Trump’s predatory sexual comments about women deepened the worries

among GOP officials who fear he’ll drag down their own electoral prospects in November. But others look at Trump’s loyal bands of supporters and see no way for Republicans in other races to win without their support.

Trump himself made no reference to Ryan and the GOP defections at a Pennsylvania rally, except perhaps one line that could apply to fleeing Republicans as well as the Democrats.

“The last 72 hours has framed what this election is all about. It’s about the American people fighting back against corrupt politicians who don’t care about anything except for staying in power,” he said.

Running mate Mike Pence said he was staying with Trump. “I’m honored to be standing with him,” Pence said.

Trump’s candidacy long ago laid bare the turmoil roiling the GOP. Some party leaders had hoped to push off a reckoning until after the election, but with Ryan and other lawmakers publicly distancing themselves from Trump – and in some cases even calling for the real estate mogul to drop out of the race – that now appears impossible.

For Ryan, the most pressing goal through the next four weeks is preventing Republicans from losing control of the House, a scenario that seemed remote as recently as a week ago. Although Republicans are not yet panicking given their wide 246-186 seat majority, Ryan and Greg Walden, the chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, both acknowledged on Monday’s conference call that the majority was more in peril in light of Trump’s problems.

DeKALB – Curly’s Furniture opened a new store in DeKalb with the goal of bringing affordable furniture to the community.

“We just noticed that there really wasn’t a lot of options over here for people to save money on furniture, so we made this our starting point for expanding,” said AJ Hartley, manager of the DeKalb store at 1901 E. Lincoln Highway.

The store sells Ashley furniture at factory-direct prices and offers financing, layaway and delivery options, Hartley said.

Selections include furniture for the bedroom, living room, entertainment area, dining room, home office and children’s bedroom as well as accent pieces such as wall art, pillows and throws.

Hartley said the company opened the store in DeKalb after nearly 30 years of operating in Streator, where it has two locations.

“We kind of decided to venture out, expand our wings a little bit and see what happens,” he said.

Taking Curly’s Furniture to a larger city also means expanding the store’s reach to more people, Hartley said.

Don’t give up on plans for Paisley Park museum

Ideally, all of the details would have been worked out before the first ticket to Prince’s Paisley Park was sold. However, because a final “t’’ wasn’t crossed, a wrench was thrown into plans to open the Minnesota rock icon’s studio to the public – a glitch that could disappoint hundreds of fans eager to get an inside look at their beloved Purple One’s creative space.

Hopefully Paisley Park managers and Chanhassen city officials will work together to resolve zoning concerns and allow the museum plan to move forward.

Prince was known for throwing impromptu, late-night dance parties at Paisley Park, and his family and associates say the rock star always wanted his studio to become a museum. But the late musician didn’t leave a will spelling that out.

Since his death last April, a court-appointed trust has been working through the disposition of his estimated $300 million to $500 million estate.

Graceland Holdings, the company that oversees Elvis Presley’s museum in Memphis, was hired to manage Paisley Park and started selling tickets for tours. A request for rezoning was approved by Chanhassen’s planning commission and city staff. But on Monday the City Council tabled a final decision, casting doubt on whether the announced Oct. 6 opening day would occur.

Fortunately, a “Purple Reprieve” was granted. Council members approved a temporary, three-day permit to allow visitors Thursday and Saturday as well as Oct. 14, the day after an all-star tribute to Prince is scheduled at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Three dance parties in Prince’s honor are also scheduled to be held downtown next weekend in connection with the museum opening and tribute.

The temporary opening was great news for those who traveled to the Twin Cities to see Paisley Park on or close to those three days. But it remains uncertain whether others who bought $38 to $100 tickets (and in some cases purchased airline tickets) will be able to use them. On a 3-2 vote, council members delayed the rezoning because of concerns about public safety, traffic, parking and the need to gather more information about the facility’s impact on the community. When the museum is up and running, it could attract an estimated 600,000 visitors a year.

Under city rules, Chanhassen officials have until Dec. 20 to respond to the rezoning request. The city and Graceland Holdings should try to resolve any outstanding issues before then. The “Purple Reprieve” dates should give them an idea of the impact of museum on the community and help them make a final decision.

Paisley Park can become a tourist attraction that would benefit the entire Twin Cities region. Once residents can be assured that their concerns have been heard, the Chanhassen City Council should act to minimize possible losses for fans holding tickets and allow U.S. and international visitors to honor the legacy of their beloved Purple One. Breast cancer’s toll is terrible

My mother’s breathing was ragged.

I held her left hand with each labored gasp. My dad, her husband of almost 59 years, gripped her right.

As she breathed slowly, shallowly, my dad cried out, “Save a place for me in heaven.”

Tears fell down the face of my sister, who sat at the foot of the bed.

We watched 79 years of life and an 11-year battle with breast cancer come to an end.

Our mother was gone.

The pictures on the bedroom wall spoke to what was important to mom: family.

Photos of each of her three children and their partners on their wedding days stood like sentinels overlooking her bed.

The faces of her seven grandkids peered out from picture frames.

A devoted husband looked on adoringly.

Happy memories.

I thought of my three daughters – all of whom were born during mom’s long fight with cancer. Days before her death, they stood at their grandmother’s bedside and sang “Jesus Loves Me.” But what will they remember about their grandma?

For me, June 2, 2013, always will be a day of sadness.

• There are lots of charities that help folks with breast cancer. Please donate or volunteer.

A cancer diagnosis can be

overwhelming.

When Mom first received her terminal prognosis, the family was devastated. Shortly after she was told the cancer was beyond cure, we had a birthday party for my eldest daughter.

Mom wept while she sang “Happy Birthday.” Dad’s voice cracked while saying grace. My wife, Joan, thought of her mother, who died of breast cancer a few weeks before our wedding.

At times, during this long battle with cancer, I was at a loss to know what to say to my mom.

The only thing that seemed just right was, “I love you.”

The chemotherapy left her bald. Sores developed on her feet.The cancer sapped her energy. Nausea haunted her for years.

It was not an easy life. But it was one she endured without complaining. Some folks call that courage. I call it character.

Despite her difficulties, mom always had a smile for her family. When folks ask what I remember most, that’s it.

I love you, Mom.

That alternation means winners don’t put their opponents in jail. If they do – or if the opponents fear that they will be jailed – then the incentive to accept defeat evaporates. Losers in that dire position instead will turn to wide-scale popular resistance or military coups.

That’s only rational if the losers think they won’t be free to run for office again.

Alternation is thus what distinguishes stable democracies from weak or failing ones.

Prosecuting opponents is the hallmark of democracy-ending dictatorship.

Egypt offers a recent and clear example: Abdel-Fattah El-Sissi has relentlessly prosecuted the elected leaders he displaced in his 2013 coup. No one has any illusion that the Muslim Brotherhood will be back in future elections. And no one doubts that democracy in Egypt is over.

It may seem extreme to say that Trump’s promise to prosecute Clinton threatens alternation in the U.S. After all, American democracy is pretty stable. But other presidents have bent over

backward to avoid such prosecutions – even to the point of condoning illegal behavior.

Gerald Ford’s pardon of Richard Nixon is a prime example, although the two were from the same party. Ford judged that the republic wouldn’t be well-served by prosecution of a former president. George W. Bush didn’t seek to prosecute Bill Clinton for perjury, although legally he might have been able to do so.

And Barack Obama didn’t seek to prosecute Bush administration officials for acts that likely counted as torture.

In each instance, there were other political reasons to avoid prosecution.

But the dominant rationale was surely that each president wanted to avoid the specter of using executive office to go after opponents or former presidents.

This shows that even in the U.S., the value of democratic alternation weighs very heavily – more heavily than criminal justice. Trump’s threat to jail Clinton shows he doesn’t value that tradition of alternation.

Even if he’s not elected, that’s a dangerous view.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Earlier last week, Western Michigan football coach PJ Fleck deflected a question the way Broncos running back Jarvion Franklin deflected Northern Illinois safety Mycial Allen’s hard-charging shoulder pad on Saturday.

No, he did not view the game against the six-time defending MAC West Champion Huskies as a potential changing-of-the-guard type of match-up.

Well, it sure felt like it on Saturday.

Love him or hate him – if you’re a Huskie fan, it’s probably the latter – but Fleck has the Broncos 6-0 for the first time since before the United States entered World War II, and after opening the season with a 22-21 win at Northwestern, they’ve beaten everybody by at least two touchdowns.

They were the preseason favorite to win the MAC this season, and right now they haven’t shown any reason to doubt that. More than likely, their contest against Toledo in the regular season will likely determine who wins the MAC West and who will probably win the MAC Championship.

VIEWS Jesse Severson It’s interesting to see how similar Western Michigan’s rise under Fleck has been to Northern Illinois’ rise to being the school that had a stranglehold on the MAC West for six seasons.

In his first season in 2013, the Broncos went 1-11. In Joe Novak’s final year at Northern Illinois in 2007, the Huskies went 2-10.

In the first two seasons under Jerry Kill, the Huskies had a pair of decent, bowl-bound seasons – six wins in 2008, seven in 2009. The past two seasons, the Broncos put together back-to-back eight-win campaigns, including the program’s first bowl victory last year.

It has been the year after the two good seasons that each program went to the moon.

Playing in their respective sectionals, Austin Freeman and Emma Carpenter both qualified individually on Monday for the IHSA state championships.

Freeman shot a 76 and the Barbs boys team finished in seventh place with a 314 – six strokes behind thirdplace and final team qualifier Highland Park – at the Class 3A Harlem Sectional. He shot 37 on the front nine and 39 on the back nine, while teammate Jack Paeglow was two-strokes away from qualifying and finished with a 78.

the Class 2A Schaumburg Sectional on the girls side.

At the boys Class 2A St. Viator Sectional, Kaneland’s Brett Glennon (75) and Jake Hed (78) both qualified for the state meet. As a team, the Knights finished fourth despite having the same score of third-place Marmion Academy, which had a score of 320 and advances to the state meet.

eighth place in the sectional, shooting 331 on the day. Genoa-Kingston’s Nick Gargani was five strokes from qualifying individually and shot an 84.

At the girls Class 1A Pontiac Sectional, Hinckley-Big Rock’s Erin Lyon shot 91 and was one stroke away from qualifying. Indian Creek’s Katherine Nolan shot a 94 for the Timberwolves.

Kaneland grad Koehring helps St. Cloud State defense in win Kaneland grad Gary Koehring, a junior linebacker for St. Cloud State, had eight tackles for the Huskies, who held University of Mary to 78 rushing yards and 111 passing yards in a 41-7 win on Saturday in Minnesota. The Huskies are now 3-3 on the season.

In a 31-27 Pomona College win on Saturday against Cal Lutheran, DeKalb grad Leif Williams had five tackles. The freshman linebacker has 14 tackles on the season, and averages 3.5 tackles per game.

Kaneland grad and Western Illinois tight end Tyler Slamans has two catches this season for 13 yards. The 6-foot3, 239-pound sophomore from Sugar Grove is an exercise science major for the Leathernecks (4-1).

The Broncos also drew a crowd of 28,042 to Waldo Stadium on Saturday.

Not only that, with his strong recruiting classes he’s put together, including the highest-ranked class in MAC history in 2016, according to Scout.com, it appears that Western Michigan is building something that could last the way Northern Illinois did starting in 2010. Even if Fleck ends up taking a job at a bigger school – duh – the Broncos seem to be in a

You don’t have to like it – in fact, you definitely shouldn’t if you’re a

Huskie fan – but it just feels like it’s happening.

For the Huskies, this doesn’t mean that the 2016 season isn’t salvagable.

They need to at least split the games with Central Michigan and Toledo and win the rest of the remaining games on the favorable schedule.

That would put them at six wins and keep the stretch of eight consecutive bowl appearences alive.

With Anthony Maddie under center the past two games, the Huskies have moved the ball well. However, the only way they can salvage this disappointing season is if they clean up the mistakes on offense and start to play some defense. No matter what happens, it’s going to make for an interesting offseason as Northern Illinois gets back to the drawing board.

However, with each passing week – after every Broncos win and every Huskies loss – it’s looking more and more like Western Michigan is going to be the team everybody in the MAC is chasing for the coming years.

Fox mocks ‘hot-dog-laden press box,’ admits WR was open

Even though he eventually agreed with the assertion that receiver Alshon Jeffery was open on the Bears’ final play of Sunday’s game, coach John Fox bristled when asked about quarterback Brian Hoyer not looking in his direction.

“It could have been an option,” he said Monday. “I don’t know that you can be super-critical. When you’re out there playing quarterback it looks a little different than when you’re up in the press box having hot dogs.”

Fox’s jab drew laughter from some that were gathered – and from himself – at Halas Hall.

Jeffery was visibly agitated after not being thrown the ball in single coverage down the left sideline on fourth-and-8 from the Colts 28. Hoyer, who falsely assumed Jeffery would be double-covered, threw behind Cam Meredith with the Bears down six with 1:02 left.

Asked whether that play illustrated the difference between Hoyer and injured starter Jay Cutler, who has thrown more frequently in Jeffery’s direction, Fox again railed against the critique.

And, again, he referenced tubed meats.

“Well, I’m not going to get into this as far as the difference between two guys,” he said. “It would have been

The Bears weren’t sure of their next move when they placed the 2015 first-round pick on injured reserve Wednesday but determined that surgery is “the best medical treatment,” Fox said.

“I think, time-wise, he’d still have a shot to come back at some point in the season,” Fox said.

Then, slowly from the Fenway Park crowd rose a chant of “Pa-pi!”

While the Indians celebrated a 4-3 victory over the Red Sox for a threegame sweep and a berth in the AL Championship Series, the Boston fans demanded to see David Ortiz one more time Monday night. Ten minutes after the final out, when most of Cleveland’s players had moved the party into the visitors’ clubhouse, chants of “We’re not leaving!” and “Thank you, Papi!” finally drew the beloved slugger back onto the field.

Wearing a red warmup and a scowl on his face, Ortiz lumbered out to the mound and tipped his cap in all directions, tapping his heart. Only when the camera zoomed in on him did it become apparent that the frown was not regret over an early postseason exit: Big Papi was crying.

Werth’s homer helped break open a one-run game in the ninth inning, moving the Washington Nationals within one victory of taking a postseason series for the first time with an 8-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday and a 2-1 lead in their best-of-five NL playoff.

Heck, he even tied Babe Ruth with his 15th career postseason homer, good for 11th all-time.

car because of a tire issue. Then Harvick pulled into his stall with a mechanical problem. Austin Dillon was spun by Martin Truex Jr. on a restart. Chase Elliott was collected in that accident. Then Hamlin had an engine failure while running second late in the race.

None of that is the kind of “drama” that has driven the Chase the last two years.

That excitement centered around Brad Keselowski getting tackled, Keselowski getting punched and Matt Kenseth’s running feud with Logano. Yes, those are the instances that make NASCAR a watercooler conversation on Monday mornings, but the drivers absolutely abhor the sensationalism and scrutiny that comes with such displays of emotion or personality.

So now they’ve provided an opportunity to really look at the racing and wonder how each team will react in this suddenly intense Chase.

The first round didn’t knock anyone’s socks off – two Truex wins and a Harvick victory – and no shocking elimination. Everyone probably wanted Tony Stewart to make it out of the first round, but nobody thought he was running well enough to do

his eighth victory at the Hendrick Motorsports home track, but Johnson has been a bit overlooked the last three years. He’d failed in the first two years of the elimination format to get past the second round, and there’s been no reason to think that Hendrick Motorsports can compete with the four Toyota drivers or Harvick.

But a summer of hard work has suddenly put Hendrick on the radar, and both Johnson and teammate Elliott have turned it up in the Chase. Now, Johnson has a spot in the round of eight, and his sights squarely on a seventh championship.

History has shown that Johnson dominance does little for the NASCAR fan base, and there’s been a total lack of appreciation for his five consecutive championships and six overall. But his win at Charlotte felt different. There was a sense that seven might actually be doable, and Johnson’s pursuit of Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt in the record books could be embraced this year.

Whether Johnson moves your meter, his hunt for that seventh title is surely more entertaining that which driver fails the laser inspection each week.

So thank you, NASCAR. Thank you, Chase teams. Thank you, Charlotte Motor Speedway. Thank you, Jimmie Johnson.

Potential jurors chosen for Penn State abuse scandal lawsuit

Treatment helps vaginal bulge Dear Dr. K: I’m a woman in my 60s. I saw my doctor because of rectal pain and constipation. She told me I have a “rectocele.”

What does this mean?

Dear Reader: The vagina is separated from the rectum by a wall of tough, fibrous tissue called fascia. Sometimes, an area of this wall gets weak, and part of the rectum bulges into the vagina. This bulge is called a rectocele.

A rectocele usually develops after the vaginal wall is damaged when a baby is born in the normal way, without a cesarean section. But symptoms may not develop until later in life. That’s because the damaged vaginal wall weakens slowly. Rectoceles often are not seen until a woman enters menopause.

Any condition that frequently puts more pressure in the lower pelvis increases the chance that a rectocele will develop. Frequent straining to have a bowel movement because of chronic constipation can do it.

So can repetitive heavy lifting. So can a chronic cough, such as from asthma, chronic lung disease or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Each surge of pressure in the lower pelvis weakens the vaginal wall slightly more.

A small rectocele may not cause any symptoms. Larger rectoceles, however, can trigger a variety of rectal and vaginal complaints. These include: • A bulge of tissue protruding through the vaginal opening • Constipation • Difficulty having a bowel movement • Pain or discomfort during sex • A feeling that the rectum has not emptied completely after a bowel movement • A sensation of rectal pressure • Rectal pain • Difficulty controlling the passage of

A rectocele will not heal on its own.

It may remain a minor problem, or may become larger and more problematic with time.

If your symptoms are bothersome, your doctor can prescribe a pessary, a device shaped like a ring, block or plug.

It is placed into the vagina to support the bulging tissues. It works to fix the problem in many women.

Many women with a rectocele also have related conditions, including bulging of the bladder into the vagina, or sagging of the uterus into the vagina. This condition is called pelvic organ prolapse. Surgery to repair pelvic organ prolapse usually can be done at the same time as a rectocele repair.

DEAR ABBY I’m a 25-year-old lesbian from a Jeanne suburban area Phillips outside the Twin Cities. It’s not easy finding other gay women in this area, unless I visit Minneapolis, which I don’t enjoy.

I always seem to fall for straight girls or girls who always have been straight but are bi-curious, which never ends well for me.

My current situation has me stumped. The girl I’m interested in is in a relationship with a man. They have been together for a long time and have kids together. I have kept my distance for the most part because I don’t want to be pushy or seem like a home-wrecker.

As we have grown closer over the past couple of months, she has told me she doesn’t want to be with him anymore. She said she isn’t in love with him and she’s tired of pretending.

Recently, she confided she can’t reach sexual satisfaction unless she thinks about women and she isn’t sure what that means. She made a move on me once. A few weeks ago she kissed me, but nothing has happened since. I’m not sure what to say or do – if anything at all. Help?
