ST. LOUIS – In a bitter debate filled with fire and insult, Hillary Clinton declared that Donald Trump’s vulgar comments about women reveal “exactly who he is” and prove his unsuitability to be president.

Firing back, he accused her of attacking women involved in Bill Clinton’s extramarital affairs and promised she would “be in jail” if he were president.

Trump, who entered Sunday night’s debate desperate to steady his floundering campaign, unleashed a barrage of attacks and continually interrupted Clinton. He repeatedly called her a “liar,” labeled her the “devil” and contended she had “tremendous hate in her heart.”

On one substantive matter, he acknowledged for the first time that he had paid no federal income taxes for many years.

The debate was the culmination of a stunning stretch in the race for the White House, which began with the release of a new video in which Trump is heard bragging about how his fame allowed him to “do anything” to women. Many Republicans rushed to revoke their support, with some calling for him to drop out of the race.

Answering for his words for the first time, Trump denied that he had ever kissed and grabbed women without their consent. He said repeatedly that his words in 2005 were merely “locker room talk” and paled in comparison to what he called Bill Clinton’s abuse of women.

“She should be ashamed of herself,” Trump declared. Ahead of the debate, the businessman met with three women who accused the former president of sexual harassment and even rape, then invited them to sit in the debate hall.

Bill Clinton never faced any criminal charges in relation to the allegations, and a lawsuit over an alleged rape was dismissed. He did settle a lawsuit with one of the women who claimed harassment. On the debate stage, Clinton did not respond directly to Trump’s accusations about her husband or her own role, but was blistering in her condemnation of his predatory comments about women in the tape released Friday.

“I think it’s clear to anyone who heard him that it represents exactly who he is,” she said, adding that she did not believe Trump had the “fitness to serve” as commander in chief.

The second debate was a town hall format, with several undecided voters sitting on stage with the candidates. The voters, all from the St. Louis area, were selected by Gallup.

STEM Fest aims to delight, amaze children of all ages at NIU convention

Shaw Media correspondent Anaya Aguilar, 10, had never felt the hair on her arm stand up before. But the fourth-grader at St. Mary’s School in Sycamore laughed as she felt electricity course through her when she touched a Van de Graaf generator at STEM Fest (science, technology, engineering and math) on Saturday at Northern Illinois University’s Convocation Center.

“It was weird, but I liked it,” Anaya, a DeKalb resident, said about touching the generator. “I love STEM Fest. I’ve been coming since I was 5. I like to see all the new things each year, and see all the things they bring back.”

Anaya was one of thousands of children who came to NIU the past weekend to be amazed and delighted by more than 200 exhibits at NIU STEM Outreach’s seventh annual celebration of all things science.

More than 100 NIU student organizations, nonprofits and companies engaged families with hands-on activities.

Visitors were able to explore everything from traditional science subjects such as biology, physics and chemistry, to exhibits sponsored by NIU’s School of Nursing and NIU’s School of Theatre and Dance.

Pettee Guerrero, the STEM Fest coordinator, said this weekend’s event was the best STEM Fest yet, thanks to exciting new exhibits and more involvement from NIU student groups and volunteers. She said she hoped that by giving kids hands-on activities, they will develop a curiosity about science that will captivate them.

“Kids need to touch and feel. We want them interested in the STEM fields,” she said. “We need more engineers and more scientists. This is an opportunity for them to meet our professors and our students and ask questions.”

STEM Outreach Director Pati Sievert said that children are natural scientists who are curious about everything. She explained that children will need skills in all of the STEM fields for future success.

“It’s just plain fun, too,” Sievert said about STEM Fest. “The kids really have a good time. This is serving a need in the community. Everybody is interested in what we do that day, and people are curious about what’ s going on in STEM fields.”

Email shows Moeller was exploring options District withholds email related to restraining order; Chronicle appeals denial

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Hours after a judge granted the DeKalb High School Principal an emergency order of protection against District 428 Superintendent Doug Moeller, Moeller emailed a school board member about a letter of recommendation for another job.

In a complaint seeking the order of protection, Michele Albano said that Moeller had become upset with her after she spurned his advances, threatening to ruin her career and intimidating her with a gun.

The emergency order was granted at 1:42 p.m. Sept. 19 in Kane County Court; it was dismissed by a judge Thursday because Albano didn’t show up for a scheduled a hearing to continue the order.

At 3:40 p.m. Sept. 19, Moeller sent an email to DeKalb School Board member Mary Hess asking her to sign a letter of recommendation that she had written for him.

As a freshman at NIU, this was Randall Barnes’ first time volunteering at STEM Fest. The member of NIU’s chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers was demonstrating how to make snap circuits.

“It’s important for kids to understand the simple concepts of electricity,” he said “These snap circuits resemble real electrical circuits and they should know the basics.”

Elizabeth Moeller of DeKalb brought her children to STEM Fest so they could earn a badge for Girl Scouts, but said that she has a science background and was interested in seeing what the event had to offer.

“I wanted to bring them to get more interested in science,” she said of both her daughters, Chloe, 6, and Lily, 8.

Moeller’s contract, signed in May 2014, expires in May 2019. He has been on paid leave since Albano obtained the protective order.

Hess said she was unaware at the time of the email that Albano had sought legal protection from Moeller. She said she found out about the issue at a school board meeting that Tuesday.

In a Freedom of Information request sent Sept. 22, the Daily ChronDoug icle requested emails Moeller Moeller sent in September to board members, Albano and others, among other public records.

The district’s response on Thursday included some redacted emails. District officials refused to release other documents, citing an ongoing internal investigation.

“Being ranked or in competition with each other is not a particularly effective way to run a network of districts throughout the state. And rather than shame and blame on school districts, ESSA is going to give us the opportunity to look at how to better support to students,” Christensen said.

When some educators and administrators at the listening session gave input on policy, assessment and academic metrics, at least one teacher spoke up to keep the “elephant in the room” from going unaddressed.

“Until we come up with a different way of funding our schools, I don’t see any of this (ESSA) being successful,” said Deanna Thunberg, a third grade dual language teacher at Lincoln Elementary in Belvidere School Dist. 100 State lawmakers have said in the

past that they are looking to overhaul school funding, with Democrats and Republicans each trying to come up with funding formulas that both sides feel would be a more equitable than the current way.

State Rep. Bob Pritchard, R-Hinckley, is on the governor’s bipartisan school funding reform commission that is tasked with examining how the state funds public education. He attended the ISBE event.

He said that nearly a quarter of revenue in the state’s general fund goes to making pension payments, including for teachers and administrators. That level of funding, he said, impacts money available to give school districts.

“We’ve got to make some adjustments,” he said. “People have to be willing to make some compromises to things that will keep the system going and growing.”

The listening session was held Oct. 5 at the DeKalb County Farm Bureau in Sycamore.

ESSA offers federal guidelines for public education and was signed into law Dec. 2015 with the reauthorization of the Elementary an Secondary Education Act. ESSA is the Obama administration’s replacement for the 2002 No Child Left Behind Act that former President George W. Bush ushered in.

Now, states like Illinois are trying to implement ESSA into their own public school districts. ISBE is looking to have a state plan in place by early 2017 that would go into effect as of

PRIDE Awards recognize local residents, organizations and businesses that have significantly improved the quality of life in DeKalb through projects, activities or programs emphasizing resource conservation, energy efficiency, beautification, waste reduction or similar environmental improvements.

Illinois worst in reclaiming jobless benefits

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois is billions in debt, has billions in overdue bills and can’t seem to remove itself from a budget morass, yet it’s the nation’s worst in reclaiming hundreds of millions of dollars in overpaid unemployment benefits, an Associated Press analysis of federal labor data found.

The abysmal performance – claiming only about $264 million of the $714 million in overpayments from 2012 to 2016 – is one reason the U.S. Labor Department said that it would step in to help Illinois meet standards for management, record-keeping and timeliness, according to an Aug. 31 letter obtained by the AP under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. Illinois’ 37 percent recovery rate is the worst among all U.S. states and territories, which average 66 percent, the AP found.

That unclaimed $452 million can’t be used to alleviate social services that have suffered because of the state’s 21-month budget crisis, because it’s earmarked for current legitimate jobless claims or be held in savings to dole out for unemployment in the future.

Chicago teachers, school officials look to avert strike

CHICAGO – Contract negotiations between Chicago teachers and officials in the nation’s third-largest school district took place throughout the weekend in hopes of reaching a deal to avert a strike.

The Chicago Teachers Union has said its members are prepared to stop instruction for about 400,000 students as early as Tuesday morning for its second major strike since 2012, when teachers were out for seven school days. The university also is close to its capacity for undergraduate residential enrollment.

The man in custody was one of three apprehended in the eastern city of Chemnitz on Saturday. He was the renter of the apartment that police raided in their search for the main suspect, Jaber Albakr from the Damascus area of Syria, Saxony police spokesman Tom Bernhardt told The Associated Press. FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – When Hurricane Matthew dumped torrential rains on North Carolina, thousands of people found themselves suddenly trapped in homes and cars. Rescuers in Coast Guard helicopters plucked some of them from rooftops and used military vehicles to reach others, including a woman who held on to a tree for three hours after her car was overrun by flood waters.

In another dramatic rescue, a woman with her small child perched on the roof of her car had to be helped to safety as the waters rose around them, underscoring how quickly Matthew wreaked havoc 100 miles or more inland after sparing much of the Southeastern coast the catastrophic damage once feared.

The storm killed more than 500 people in Haiti and at least 18 in the U.S. – nearly half of them in North Carolina. Most were swept away by flood waters. Gov. Canada’s new carbon tax sets trend on climate

Canada is an unlikely model for climate-change policy. As things stand, it’s a long way from keeping the promise it made as part of the Paris agreement to sharply cut carbon emissions. But its government is now proposing to make this right -- and with an approach that deserves to be widely copied.

This week Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a national carbon tax, starting at C$10 ($8) a ton in 2018 and rising to C$50 by 2022. The plan isn’t perfect, but the basic idea is right.

In moving to strengthen national climate-change policy, Trudeau had to contend with the fact that some provinces have already set carbon prices of their own. The government needed a scheme that would encompass those systems while pushing other provinces to catch up. So Trudeau offered a choice: Stick with your own approach, so long as it cuts emissions as deeply as the new national tax, or let Ottawa collect the levy and send you the proceeds. This accomplishes several things. It tells the world that Canada wants to make good on its commitments.

It announces that even an economy dependent on energy extraction can tax carbon.

Best of all, it shows that a carbon tax needn’t be a grab for additional fiscal resources: The policy can be revenue-neutral.

Where the plan falls short is the rate of tax. It’s unclear how the government arrived at C$50 by 2022, but that’s probably too low to curb emissions as promised. By one estimate, Canada would need a carbon tax of $200 a ton by 2030 to achieve its Paris target.

Bringing the tax up to the right level shouldn’t be rushed, because the economy will need time to adjust -- but promising to pause at C$50 for review introduces uncertainty. A carbon tax works best if it provides a long-term price signal to guide investments spanning years or decades. Not knowing whether the price will increase after 2022 undermines that benefit.

Still, the first and most difficult step for any government that’s serious about climate change is to put a price on carbon. Canada is about to do that, and other countries should do the same.

To the Editor: Ah, those words from September Song.

So appropriate.

If someone says to you, “I hate change,” Tell them to think of Autumn.

The tree leaves outside our windows are no longer totally green, interspersed with golden and crimson ones. The willow tree is gone due to a lightning strike so it was removed to avoid danger due to the loss of its stability.

The man-made pond no longer reflects the azure summer sky with the white puffy clouds drifting by, lulling one into a state of bliss while reading outside.

As often in life, there is a trade-off.

No longer is our tranquility invaded by annoying insects, sending us skittering inside when they could not be persuaded their company was not wanted. Difficult to understand why they chose our treasured space when there is a whole world out there for them.

As I write this, no leaves are falling yet. Which one will be the first to drop, with the rest soon to follow, like lemmings to the sea?

But some will hang on tenaciously, refusing to let go. Much like some of us hang on to life as long as we can.

Someone will rake the leaves into small

mounds for the city work crews to suck them up from the curb.

Perhaps a small child will find the sport irresistible that we loved as children and jump into the pile, sending them scattering and making their cleanup more difficult, to the dismay of their elders.

A quote comes to mind. “It is folly to rake leaves before they fall from the trees,” meaning we shouldn’t fret about things that have not yet occurred.

Some day the verdant trees will be replaced by barren ones. Jack Frost will do his artistry, turning the world into a Currier and Ives Christmas card. We’ll soon forget how lovely the summer and

autumn days were and anticipate the visit from that jolly old man in the red suit that looks so smashing (though unfashionable) in contrast to the white, pristine snowfall.

The voice of the turtle in spring (Song of Solomon 2:10-12) will be replaced by the din of snow plows clearing our paths, allowing us to go about the daily business of making a living.

Each season has something for us to appreciate and enjoy. It will be spring before we know it and the cycle begins anew.

The Republican Party is stuck in a time warp.

GOP strategists are campaigning like its 1988, reprising a particularly odious play from their infamous Southern strategy. The Republican National Committee has released a TV ad attacking Tim Kaine, who once worked as a criminal attorney, for defending men convicted of murder.

That brings to mind the notorious Willie Horton ad, in which Massachusetts governor Michael Dukakis, running for president against George H.W. Bush, was eviscerated for granting a weekend furlough from prison to a black man who later raped a white woman. Lee Atwater, Bush’s campaign manager, notoriously promised to make people think Horton was Dukakis’ “running mate.”

The ad, which featured a photo of a scary-looking Horton, was designed to play on the racial fears of whites already uncomfortable with the changes wrought by the civil rights movement.

Trump’s advisers apparently think a similar tactic will work now -- never mind that the U.S. Constitution explicitly stipulates that the accused must be represented by legal counsel. The ad certainly appeals to the nominee’s core constituency, voters who revel in his crude rhetoric

The 17th annual Altrusa Spelling Bee will be at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Parish Activity Center at St. Mary’s Church in Sycamore.

The event is open to all. Individuals, companies and organizations in DeKalb County can participate by entering a three-person team for an entry fee of $300 a team. Sponsors interested in supporting a team can be matched up with spellers. And spellers in need of sponsors can get help to find one, according to a news release.

All are invited to attend the competition. Tickets cost $3. Attendees also can purchase raffle tickets at the event for prizes donated by businesses and

club members.

The DeKalb/Sycamore Altrusa will use proceeds from the event for literary projects and an endowment fund in the DeKalb County Foundation. Last year’s spelling bee allowed Altrusa to award more than $6,000 in sponsorships to schools, libraries and learning centers and four scholarships to students from DeKalb and Sycamore high schools and Kishwaukee College.

The winning spelling bee team will receive a traveling trophy, T-shirts and a pizza party. The spelling team that brings the most “cheerleaders” will win a free pizza party.

Three sites significant on the Underground Railroad in DeKalb County will be commemorated on Saturday with placement of historical markers by the DeKalb County Historical-Genealogical Society.

The ceremonies, open to the public, will begin at 8:30 a.m. with light refreshments at Mayfield Congregational Church, 28405 Church Road, Sycamore. The Rev. Martha Brunell of Mayfield Church will give the invocation before the marker unveiling. The featured speaker at all three sites will be Nancy Beasley, author of “The Underground Railroad in DeKalb County, Illinois.”

The second marker dedication will take place immediately following, about 10 a.m., at the former farm home of Deacon David West, a conductor on the Underground Railroad, 15241 Old State Road, Sycamore. Pastor Harlene Harden of the Sycamore United Methodist Church will give the invocation at the West site.

The third dedication will take place at the United Presbyterian Church, 14030 Chicago Road, Somonauk, at around 11:30 a.m. Pastor Anne Hoflin of United Presbyterian will officiate at that site.

“This is a great family activity, and then you get to enjoy the fruits of your labor with the freshest apple cider around,” museum executive director Michelle Donahoe said in a news release.

“This year the junior docents are adding to the fun. They are dressing up and will be taking pictures with kids visiting the museum. There will be little treats for the kids and a simple craft activity – a perfect combination for a fall afternoon.”

Since its inception in 2002, the Friends have raised and donated more than $50,000 in supplemental funds for the library, supporting such programs as The Big Read, Book Babies and the Adult and Children’s Summer Reading Programs.

The Ellwood House Museum will host a lecture by local historian Steve Bigolin on DeKalb’s historic cemeteries at noon Thursday.

Just in time for Halloween, this talk touches on DeKalb’s four existing cemeteries – Evergreen, Oakwood, St. Mary’s and Fairview – as well as one other that disappeared in the early 1950s.

Did you know there was once a cemetery on Pleasant Street in DeKalb? And why does the Haish Monument at Fairview show signs of vandalism? Discover the answers to these questions and more at Bigolin’s lecture. This talk will include stories on DeKalb’s most notable families – the Ellwoods, Gliddens and Haishs – but will also touch on lesser-known residents and their final resting places. If time permits, guests will have the chance to join Bigolin in a walk through one of these historic cemeteries.

Steve Bigolin has been a noted local historian for more than 40 years. He served 17 years on the Ellwood House board, including three years as president. Senior starting quarterback Anthony Maddie said the Huskies are only a few plays away from being really good.

A week after putting up 653 yards of total offense against Ball State, the Huskies had 484 yards in a 45-30 loss Saturday at Western Michigan – better than their average of 470.6 yards coming into the game. However, Maddie

threw two interceptions, the Huskies had some critical dropped passes and had three drives stalled in the red zone.

“It was just little mistakes that we have to clean up. It can be one mistake, and it can kill our drive,” Maddie said. “It’s just stuff we have to clean up – small things that may not seem like a big deal, but it turns into closing out drives with a field goal instead of a touchdown. ... We have to stop shooting ourselves in the foot. We’re hurting ourselves out there. We lost by 15, and there’s definitely two touchdowns we left out there.”

While the offense has been slowly getting back on track with Maddie – who had 224 passing yards and 111 rushing yards against the Broncos – at the helm, the defense for the Huskies (1-5, 1-1 MAC West) allowed 40 or more points for the fourth time this season.

The high-powered Broncos offense, which came in averaging 44.8 points and 459.6 yards a game, put up 45 points and 573 yards against the Huskies.

Instead, junior Jarvion Franklin, who was the MAC Offensive Player of the Year as a freshman before losing his spot as the Broncos’ main running back to Bogan last season, rushed for 169 yards and a touchdown and had three receptions for 80 yards.

Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey said the Huskies made some stops in the second half, but that the defen-

sive effort wasn’t good enough – the Broncos scored on four of their five drives in the final two quarters, including the three touchdowns. The Broncos could have potentially had four touchdowns, since they lined up to go for it on fourth-and-goal from the 1, but a false start put them back 5 yards, and Fleck elected to kick the field goal.

For the sixth consecutive time this season, Western Michigan didn’t turn over the ball. However, the Broncos did catch a few breaks, considering they fumbled three times but didn’t lose any of them – including when Northern Illinois cornerback Daniel Isom delivered a violent hit on Terrell near the goal line.

“They execute well, and they have good players and they have a fouryear guy back there,” Carey said of Terrell, who had 327 yards on just 18 completions.

The Huskies defense is allowing 265.4 passing yards a game, which has them tied for 96th in the country.

They’ll come back home to Huskie Stadium to face a Central Michigan team that has beat them two years in a row.

One cause for concern about that matchup for the Huskies? Chippewas senior quarterback Cooper Rush is throwing for 301 yards a game.

KIRKLAND – One team’s fate would be decided by penalty kicks Saturday as a back-and-forth game headed into overtime tied at 2. Hiawatha went on to win the thriller, 4-3, in penalty kicks over Winnebago to advance to the next round of the Class 1A Oregon Regional.

Hiawatha (2-11) dominated the first half offensively, taking five shots on net, but came away with no goals as it went into halftime behind 1-0 to Winnebago (1-16). Uriel Beltran found the back of the net with 25:39 left to go before the half.

“Our mindset is that we were playing well in the first half, but we could still be better,” Winnebago coach Andy Huftalin said. “But going into the second half, I think there was a little dropoff in the level we were playing at, and we were never really able to recover.

We did score again to tie the game and fought through overtime, but in the end, we didn’t do enough to get the result we wanted.”

The Hawks opened up the second half with a goal from Lucas Rodriguez to tie

the game at 1 with 31:13 left to play, and took a 2-1 lead nine minutes later on a goal from Bill Xu. The Hawks and the Indians traded goals in both overtime periods to again keep the game tied after extra time to force penalty kicks. The Hawks scored in the first overtime after Rodriguez added his second goal of the day just two minutes into the period. The Indians answered with a goal by Chandler Ellis, who followed his own rebound with 5:49 left in the second overtime.

Adam Spear provided the decisive goal in the penalty kick rounds after his shot hit off the crossbar and crossed the line to keep the Hawks’ season alive. Hiawatha will play No. 2 Oregon on Tuesday in the regional semifinal.

“We played as hard as we could, and I think everyone played their best soccer today,” Hiawatha coach Rob Moulton said. “We still have some things to work on, but the effort was there and it really showed today. We have nothing to lose right now, and we’re trying to turn some heads. I think if we continue to come out with this kind of effort we’re confident we can keep winning.”

Bears find a way to lose

Hard to figure this team out after frustrating performance vs. Colts Fresh off their 29-23 loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, the Bears have become a team that is flat-out impossible to figure out.

Am I surprised the Bears played their best offense of the season, showed their best pass rush of the season, continued to uncover young players that appear to have very bright futures and yet found a way to lose a game they absolutely should have won?

Actually, no, the game went pretty much the way I predicted.

The puzzle is do we celebrate this performance, laud the development of young talent or throw up our arms in frustration over a game that never should have gotten away?

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush For example, Brian Hoyer on Sunday became just the second quarterback in Bears history to throw for 300 yards in three straight games, and the other guy isn’t Jay Cutler, Erik Kramer, Jim McMahon or even Sid Luckman.

It was in fact Josh McCown.

Hoyer’s numbers against the Colts were flat out gaudy – 33 of 43 for 397 yards, 9.2 avg., 2 TDs, 0 INTs and a 120.0 passer rating.

The problem is that performance

came against one of the poorest excuses we’ve ever seen for an NFL defense and Hoyer still found a way to lose.

He took great care of the football, but in that singular focus left a number of big plays on the field that might have turned the game, and on his last play of the game he misread the coverage and, rather than throw the ball to a wide open Alshon Jeffery in the end zone for the win, he chose to go behind a well-covered Cameron Meredith for the loss.

The Bears now have a quarterback controversy very much of head coach John Fox’s making over a guy who is just good enough to lose impressively with.

As to the aforementioned Cam Meredith, we have a young man who would be a great story, a long shot to ever play professional football who stepped into his first big chance in the NFL and played well enough to be thought of as a potential big-time receiver down the road, but whose fumble at his own 27-yard line with 3:38 to play may very well have cost the Bears the game.

Meredith may be worth getting excited about, but it’s really hard to know because as impressive as his 9-130, 14.4, 1 TD outing was in Indianapolis, it came against such a bad team in a losing effort he helped create.

Best game for pass rush not enough

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com INDIANAPOLIS – The defense finally got the pass rush going, nearly matching its season-high in sacks with five, but it was an afternoon of near-misses and not enough in a 29-23 loss to the Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium, dropping the Bears to a 1-4 record.

“We’ve just got to go out there and execute. We had a couple mistakes and with a quarterback like Andrew [Luck], he’s going to find that every time,” said Jerrell Freeman, Luck’s former teammate.

Despite a spirited pass rush from the Bears, Luck completed 71.2 percent of his passes and didn’t turn it over while also converting three third-andlongs. He put the exclamation mark on the victory with his 35-yard touchdown pass to T.Y. Hilton.

“We knew he was going to be able to extend plays, that’s what he does so well,” said Danny Trevathan, who returned from thumb surgery and had six tackles. “He’s kind of in that category with Aaron Rodgers with scrambling around, extending plays and using his legs to get that extended play and get that play when it’s needed. We kind of experienced a lot of that. We just have to have better edges and you’ve got to keep [Luck] contained.”

Willie Young led the pass rush with a career-high three sacks.

“Defensively up front, we all had our mind made up. It wasn’t any in-between thinking,” he said. “It was all about, we have to do whatever it takes to get after the quarterback. Get him off his spot, disrupt his timing and help out the young guys in the secondary as much we can. Obviously, Luck is a heck of a quarterback, not to be mistaken.”

“We’ve just got to come up with a ‘W’. We know how to win, that’s for sure right now,” Young said. “We’ve just got to come out with the ‘W’. Especially close games like that.”

“It wasn’t bad at all,” Trevathan said. “All of it wasn’t bad, all of it wasn’t good, but we’ve got to separate it and capitalize on our mistakes and get them corrected.”

Offense stalls late: The 522 yards the Bears gained on offense, the franchise’s most since 1989, weren’t enough, either, to get a win.

“It don’t matter if we don’t win the game,” said Alshon Jeffery, who had five catches for 77 yards on six targets.

“I don’t give a damn what we did out

there. If we don’t win the game, that [expletive] don’t matter.”

Brian Hoyer threw for 397 yards in another efficient and impressive outing, but it’s his last play that got the most attention Sunday afternoon. On fourth-and-8 from the Colts’ 28-yard line, Hoyer threw an incomplete pass to Cameron Meredith while Jeffery was single-covered down the left sideline.

“Really to be honest, on that last play, I thought there was no way they wouldn’t [double-team Jeffery], and so I saw the safety wide, and like I said, we’ll watch the film and see how they played it,” Hoyer said.

Jeffery, who put his hands up in frustration after the play – an incomplete pass over the middle intended for Meredith – said afterward, “One play doesn’t change the game.”

I thought the Bears had found a really good nickel in Bryce Callahan – another youngster who like Meredith is a 2015 undrafted rookie free agent – until I realized last week he is actually a really good starting corner, if he can ever stay on the field.

After an outstanding first half Sunday, Callahan finished the game injured on the sideline with a hamstring problem.

Will he ever be healthy?

It is impossible not to sing the praises of Jordan Howard. General manager Ryan Pace found a really good one in the fifth round this year, and he has a chance to be special.

So why did offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains only run him 16 times for 118 yards in Indy when it was clear handing the ball to him 24 or more times was probably the best way to win the game and quite possibly would have?

Finally, I give you Connor Barth. Take him, please.

At no time has there ever been a chance Barth was likely to be more dependable than Robbie Gould inside the 45 or otherwise, which is why we are told he is a Bear.

Gould is the best ever in that regard. So why does Barth have his job?

In fairness, everybody, this is what rebuilding looks like and this is what we signed up for. That is not the problem.

The problem is on Sunday in Indy it became a lot less clear as to whether the Bears have control of the plan.

Game 3 pitching matchup is must-see VIEWS Rick Morrissey

SAN FRANCISCO – No matter whose side you’re on, whether you bleed Cubbie blue or bleed whatever a Giants fan bleeds (Ghirardelli chocolate?), you might want to take a moment to appreciate what is about to take place here.

Yes, the Cubs are on the verge of sweeping a playoff series for the first time in what seems like recorded human history, and, yes, the Giants are talking about winning three straight games to take this best-of-five National League Division Series, mostly because they’ve pulled that rabbit out of a baseball cap before.

But along with all the drama, two of the biggest big-name pitchers will take the mound for their respective teams in Game 3 Monday night. Jake Arrieta, last season’s Cy Young Award winner, will pitch for the Cubs, and Madison Bumgarner, who seems to take cruel pleasure in squeezing the life out of playoff opponents, for the Giants. Two alphas, two cowboys, two baseball carnivores, although with a shot of kale juice thrown in for the health-conscious Arrieta.

Pretty good, no?

A Cubs fan can hope that Arrieta will channel his 2015 self and reduce the Giants’ batting order, already charred, to ashes. A baseball fan can hope that both pitchers bring their best games, the way the Cubs’ Jon Lester and the Giants’ Johnny Cueto did in

WASHINGTON – Leave it to little-used, light-hitting Jose Lobaton to change the complexion of the Washington Nationals’ NL Division Series with one big swing.

Getting a rare chance to play because of starting catcher Wilson Ramos’ late-September injury, backup Lobaton hit a three-run homer through a strong wind to erase an early deficit Sunday.

SPORTS BRIEFS Kenyans Abel Kirui, Florence Kiplagat win Chicago Marathon

CHICAGO – Abel Kirui of Kenya pulled ahead of defending champion Dickson Chumba for good in the final mile to win the Chicago Marathon on Sunday.

Florence Kiplagat of Kenya won her second straight Chicago Marathon women’s title.

The men’s lead alternated between Kirui and Chumba for the last few miles. The 34-year-old Kirui finished the 26.2-mile course in an unofficial time of 2 hours, 11 minutes, 23 seconds.

Chumba finished in 2:11:26. The 29-yearold Kenyan won last year’s Chicago Marathon in 2:09:25 and finished third in 2014.

The 29-year-old Kiplagat finished in an unofficial time of 2:21:32. She posted a winning time of 2:23:33 in Chicago last year and placed third in 2014.

The top five men’s finishers and top four women were all Kenyans.

In the men’s field, Gideon Kipketer was third (2:12:20), Paul Lonyangata was fourth (2:13:17) and Stephen Sambu was fifth (2:13:35).

Edna Kiplalgat (2:23:28) was second in the women’s division. Valentine Kipketer was third (2:23:41) and Purity Rionoripo was fourth (2:24:47).

The women’s field also included Visiline Jepkesho of Kenya, who won the Paris Marathon earlier this year. Chicago Mar-

athon spokeswoman Cindy Hamilton said Jepkesho dropped out of the race after the 21.75-mile mark and was treated in the medical tent afterward.

Jimmie Johnson moves into 3rd round of NASCAR’s playoffs

CONCORD, N.C. – Stuck in the longest losing streak of his career, Jimmie Johnson had a chance for a critical win that could salvage this ho-hum season for Hendrick Motorsports.

Hardly a championship contender for most of this season, Johnson grabbed a victory at sun-soaked Charlotte Motor Speedway when nearly half the title contenders had horrible days.

The win Sunday was his third of the season, but snapped a 24-race losing streak dating to March. Johnson is the only Hendrick driver to visit victory lane this season, and this win earned him an automatic berth into the third round of the playoffs.

It’s the first time Johnson has made it out of the second round since the elimination format was introduced in 2014.

He was knocked out at Talladega in the second round of the inaugural season, and was bounced in the first round last year.

Suddenly, the six-time NASCAR champion is a realistic contender for that elusive record-tying seventh title.

Low sex drive can be improved Dear Dr. K: I’m a woman in my mid-50s.

Lately I haven’t been able to become sexually aroused. What could be wrong?

Dear Reader: Sex is complicated, but you probably already know that. Sexual desire surely resides in the head, but other parts of the body can affect desire as well. In particular, the genital organs communicate with the brain. Likewise, the brain communicates with the genital organs. Desire in the brain causes changes in the pelvic organs. Perceiving these changes can, in turn, enhance sexual desire.

There is a condition called sexual arousal disorder. Normally, a woman becomes aroused through thoughts and fantasies, touch, or a combination of these things. In response, blood flows to her pelvic area. This causes the genital tissues to swell and the vagina to moisten in readiness for sexual activity. With sexual arousal disorder, your mind desires sex, but your body does not follow suit.

Many things can cause or contribute to this disorder. Medical conditions such as hypothyroidism and diabetes can dampen sex drive. Medications, including antidepressants and anti-seizure drugs, can have sexual side effects. Emotional and psychological issues also can profoundly affect sexual desire – and performance.

Sexual arousal disorder in women often occurs after menopause, when estrogen levels drop. This can cause vaginal tissue to thin and secretions to decrease. Sex may become painful, resulting in less arousal. But even if sex is not painful, a woman may notice the absence of the pelvic changes that occur with increased blood flow and vaginal moistening.

That can put a further damper on desire.

What treatments are available to improve sexual desire and sexual function? For years, drug companies have been in search of a “female Viagra.” The idea is that increased

Another issue might be vaginal dryness.

For many women, over-the-counter lubricants and vaginal moisturizers are enough to relieve vaginal dryness. If these products don’t help, low-dose vaginal estrogen products are available by prescription. They come as creams, tablets or rings inserted into the vagina. These raise estrogen levels in the vagina, making vaginal tissue thicker and more elastic. Unlike higher-dose hormone replacement therapy, they do not significantly increase blood levels of estrogen.

The most widely studied treatment for boosting female sexual desire is testosterone.

Most studies have found a benefit. Even though testosterone is described as a “male” hormone, women also make testosterone – but in much lower amounts than men. It does stimulate desire in women as well as men, along with arousal and orgasm.

Another option, if your problem is not just physical, is sex therapy. A therapist can help you identify thoughts, feelings and behaviors that might be interfering with your sexual enjoyment. A therapist also will help you communicate your needs and enhance feelings of intimacy between you and your partner.

A loss of sexual desire and function after menopause is reasonably common. Fortunately, there are therapies that can help.

Dear Abby: I am DEAR ABBY a 911 dispatcher with some hints Jeanne for your readers Phillips in case they need emergency services and must call 911.

Please pay attention to where you are. The most important information we need is the address of the emergency. If you are on the highway, tell us the Interstate and closest mile marker, as well as your direction of travel.

Many people assume we can trace their number to their location. While that may be true for landline phones, it’s not for cellphones. Only the cellphone company can “ping” a phone.

I also would like to caution parents about letting their children play with a deactivated phone. If you want to let them play or practice, first REMOVE THE BATTERY. Many calls we receive come from kids playing on a deactivated phone, and we are unable to call those numbers back to verify whether there’s a legitimate emergency. These calls also tie up emergency lines for people who have a genuine emergency, making them wait longer for their call to be answered.

My last comment is this: If you dial 911 by accident, please tell the dispatcher it was an accident. We never get angry if someone inadvertently dials us. Our job is to make sure the public is OK. If it was accidental, say so.

Otherwise, we must call back to make sure there is not an emergency.

Those of us in this profession do this job not because we are getting rich, but because we want to help people. We are the most important link in getting people the help they need, but we cannot do it without knowing where the emergency is. Thanks for getting the word out. –

Christopher Morley, a novelist and journalist who died in 1957, said, “The real purpose of books is to trap the mind into doing its own thinking.”

The real purpose of bridge columns is to try to make the reader do his own thinking. Most deals have a trap that must be avoided, but today’s has more than one. To make four hearts, declarer’s timing must be perfect after West leads the spade queen. For the energetic, which lead from West would have defeated the contract?

South certainly could have taken the bidding slower, but jumping to four hearts with such a self-sufficient suit was eminently reasonable. (Note that five diamonds goes down after a spade lead.)

South wishes to draw trumps and run the diamonds for his contract.

But this spade lead is annoying. If declarer takes the first trick, he can ruff a spade on the board, but he would have four unavoidable losers: two spades, one heart and one club.

Instead, South must let West hold the first trick.

Suppose West now shifts to a diamond. What must declarer do?

If South takes the trick and attacks trumps, a second diamond from West cuts declarer off from the dummy. Instead, South must win with his diamond king, ruff a spade in the dummy, and drive out the club ace.

Then, he can win the next diamond trick on the board and discard his remaining spade on the club queen.

He loses only one spade, one heart and one club.

An initial diamond lead is lethal, assuming the defenders persevere with a second diamond when next on play.
