‘Creepy clowns’ I can handle If you have a child in school, I hope there’s been some talk about clowns this week at your house, because there definitely has been at their school.

The “creepy clown” phenomenon has swept the country since some children in Greenville County, South Carolina, said they saw “creepy clowns” trying to lure people into the woods in August. Most adults would say it’s ridiculous – I’m one of them.

But then, most adults don’t live in a world where magic or the supernatural seem all that possible.

Our children do. They haven’t nearly enough experience to be as cynical about the world as most grown-ups. (More often than not, that’s endearing.)

To them, it’s entirely possible that there are clowns hiding in the cornfield across the street from their school. Clowns totally could have abducted two kids from a faraway place called Elgin. (These were actual rumors circulating among children at my daughter’s school this week. They are not true.)

Social media isn’t the reason for these kind of stories – they’ve always existed – but it sure makes them spread easier. Take the hundreds of videos posted on social media by teens who have “sighted” these clowns out and about.

The clips almost always start with people taking video of a scene that’s not at all noteworthy – just driving down the road or walking down the street at night. Then someone in a clown outfit will appear (unless it’s dark, then you don’t actually see them). Then some combination of things happens: • The teens cuss (this pretty much always happens) and then ask some pointless question such as, “What are you doing?”

• A boy will get out of the car; sometimes they attack the clown, seemingly without provocation – they are macho.

• The clown stands there for a few seconds, then charges straight at the camera. Sometimes it has “a knife.”

• The teens run or drive away– the really ar-

tistic clips will have the camera catch glimpses of the masked person chasing them as it swings in the arms of the seemingly terrified videographer.

I find some of these amusing in a so-bad-it’sfunny kind of way.

But then, to me, the people making these videos are just kids. To my younger children, those teenagers are the big kids who can do adult stuff like drive, go to dances and stay out late at night. They look up to them.

If teenagers are scared of clowns, then younger children figure clowns must be really scary.

Yes, it’s odd to see school districts in the Rockford area go on lockdown, or authorities reassure parents that there’s no danger of a clown attack in DeKalb, or that “El Payaso Loco Jr.” isn’t going to be rampaging through Carpentersville.

I haven’t received an official release from Sycamore police yet, but I’m pretty sure there’s not going to be a hippopotamus stampede.

Still, as tempting as it is to make light of the situation – or to recall the ridiculous 1988 film “Killer Klowns from Outer Space” – it’s important to remember that for some of the children these schools serve, this whole clown thing is a real concern, or at least something that seems possible.

If I had to pick something for children to be worried about, I guess on balance it’s better they be afraid of “creepy clowns.”

I can tell them with almost absolute certainty that I can protect them from those.

SYCAMORE – Police are seeking information about a series of car burglaries at Twin Gables Apartments, 1770 W. State St., Sycamore.

Items were stolen Tuesday or Wednesday from multiple vehicles parked near the complex, including video gaming equipment, coins and

GPS devices, according to a DeKalb County Crime Stoppers news release.

And day-trippers who discover the enticing specialty shops in St. Charles and neighboring Geneva may want to extend the pleasure overnight. History and architecture buffs will find much to savor at two historic accommodations: Hotel Baker on the Fox River in St. Charles, and The Herrington Inn & Spa just downstream in Geneva.

the fall season, one that truly stands out is the Royal Oak Farm Orchard in Harvard.

The 160-acre property at 15908 Hebron Road is open until mid-November, offering attendees more than 30 varieties of apples from more than 16,000 apple trees.

One aspect that makes Royal Oak Farm Orchard so unique is its giant maze. Most mazes are pathways through cornstalks, but Royal Oak Farm’s maze, called Amaze ‘N Apples, leads people through a maze of apple trees.

The farm also offers so much more for its visitors. Attendees can pick out their own apples, pumpkins and squash to bring home for the fall season. While there are pre-picked pumpkins available for sale, people can also pick out their own from the orchard’s

ziplines (weekends and Columbus Day only), and farm animals.

The farm is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. General admission is $15 per person; those 2 and younger are free.

Admission includes access to more than 25 attractions. Attractions not included in the general admission cost (but worth checking out) include the Sniper Zombie Paintball Ride, pony rides, gem mining and a climbing wall, among other activities.

Born: June 22, 1925; in LaSalle Co., IL Died: October 3, 2016; in DeKalb, IL Helen Marie Bauer, age 91, of Earlville, passed away on Monday, October 3, 2016 at DeKalb Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in DeKalb, IL. She was born on June 22, 1925 in LaSalle Co., IL, the daughter of John and Gladys (Mead) Minor.

Helen was united in marriage on November 14, 1943 in DeKalb, IL to Mr. Edward Martin Bauer and they spent the next 44 happy years of their lives together until his passing on February 13, 1988. Mrs. Bauer enjoyed farming and running lunch wagons at auctions. And later in life was employed, for several years, at both the Kauffman Turkey Farm and H&R Block in Waterman, IL. Helen Besides working on the farm, she was garden champion at the Sandwich Fair for three years, (1963-1971). Helen also hosted many family and friends for weekend parties at the farm. She was a member of the Elderberry’s in Waterman, IL. Mrs. Bauer also belonged to several CB Radio Clubs, including DeKalb, Mendota, LaSalle, and Cortland. Helen was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, and aunt who will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Helen is survived by her children, Helen M. Heath of Sandwich, IL and Edward (Cathy) Bauer, Jr. of Waterman, IL; her nine grandchildren; her twenty great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; her sisters, Violet Minor of Mendota, IL and Viola Cooper of Mendota, IL; sister-in-law, Katha Minor of Germany; her daughter-in-law, Charlotte (Donald) Bauer-Frickman of Waterman, IL; as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Gladys Minor; her husband, Edward Bauer; her son, Michael Bauer in 1997; her brother, John J. Minor; her sister, Genevieve Lemmer; and a great-grandson, Dane Michael Rhoton in 2010.

Mary Helen Pierson, 97, passed away quietly on Thursday, October 6, 2016 in DeKalb.

She was born on June 4, 1919 in Sycamore, IL, the only child of William and Emma (Leiner) St. Dennis. She married the late Arthur Pierson in 1943 in Sycamore. They had five children together. Her greatest joy was her family and for over seventy years every holiday was celebrated at her house. Mary Helen was a member of Salem Lutheran Church and loved outdoor activities like camping and fishing.

She is survived by her daughters, Arlene Moon of Sycamore, IL, Jackie Johnson of Prescott, Arizona, and Carol (Bob) Weishaar of Sycamore, IL; her daughter-in-law, Laura Pierson of Florida; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and four greatgreat grandchildren.

2 face murder charges after DeKalb shooting

DeKALB – Two men face first-degree murder charges in connection with the fatal shooting Thursday of a 25-year-old man at an apartment building in DeKalb.

Police were called to a parking lot behind an apartment building at 810 Kimberly Drive at 10:29 p.m. Thursday, where Debrece G. Shields had been shot. Shields, who had ties to both DeKalb and Chicago, was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital where he died, according to a news release from the DeKalb Police Department.

David T. Walls, 18, of 12000 block of Normal Avenue in Chicago, and Nico L. Griggs, 27, of the 100 block of Fir Street in Park Forest, were arrested Friday in connection with the slaying after an investigation by the DeKalb County Major Case Squad.

Walls and Griggs have a bond hearing set for Sunday at the DeKalb Coun-

ty Courthouse in Sycamore. They are being held at the DeKalb County Jail. In addition to murder charges, they also face charges of aggravated unlawful possession of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a firearm, police said.

Within minutes of the shooting, DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputies spotted a vehicle with four people inside parked near the intersection of Peace and Freed roads that matched the description one witnesses saw leaving the scene of the crime. Two of the people in the vehicle fled on foot and remained at large as of Friday afternoon. Two others, Walls and Griggs, were held and later arrested and police recovered two handguns, according to the release.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, Sycamore police, Genoa police and other law enforcement agencies searched for the two people who fled, but they weren’t immediately found. Investigators believe the two who fled are witnesses to Shields’ murder and are persons of interest, police said.

DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller said an autopsy was performed on Shields at 1 p.m. Friday.

Results from the the autopsy weren’t immediately available Friday.

Cmdr. Craig Woodruff said he couldn’t discuss a possible motive for the crime, but said those involved likely knew each other and that the shooting wasn’t a random act. The case remains under investigation, he said.

Shields had been arrested several times in DeKalb County. In May, he had been charged with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver. In that case, Shields and another man were arrested after police said they found nearly 3 ounces of marijuana, two Xanax pills and more than $1,000 in the car.

Some residents in the area said they weren’t fazed by the sound of gunfire, which they described as a normal occurrence in the neighborhood.

Brenna McCormick, a 22-year-old senior at Northern Illinois University, lives with her husband in an apartment building near the parking lot where the shooting occurred.

They were at home when McCormick said the shots rang out.

He said he heard three gunshots, then a lot of yelling. The sound of the gunfire didn’t surprise him.

“What else is new? We hear them all the time out here,” he said, adding gunfire can be heard “five, six times a week” in the area.

“I’d like to see more police presence out here,” Shless said. “I think that would make a difference.”

He’s not too concerned for his own safety, because he said he doesn’t bother anyone.

“I’m not concerned for myself,” he said. “But every single day there’s kids around here playing.”

Amanda Brown, a 23-year-old senior at NIU, lives in another building nearby. She said she was home when the shooting occurred, but learned more about it when a sorority sister who was coming to visit told her about the commotion in the parking lot.

Jury finds DeKalb man guilty of murder in shaken baby case

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A 26-year-old DeKalb man could spend the rest of his life in prison after being convicted Friday evening of shaking his 71/2-week-old daughter to death in August 2013.

A jury found Keith L. Terrell, of the 700 block of North Annie Glidden Road, DeKalb, guilty of first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated battery of a child, DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack said. Terrell could face a sentence of up to life in prison, but the offense typically is punishable with between 20 and 60 years in prison.

Prosecutors Stephanie Klein and David Weichel built their case on testimony from police officers, medical experts and Terrell’s videotaped confession to police. Terrell’s attorney, DeKalb County Public Defender Tom McCulloch, told the jury that police induced his client to falsely confess to a crime he didn’t commit because his explanations about what happened to the girl didn’t fit their theory of the case.

On Friday, the jury heard medical testimony along with closing arguments from both sides.

In her closing, Klein walked the jury through the law and emphasized key points made by witnesses during the trial, including medical experts, police officers and Shanae Scott, the mother of Kelis. Scott is a 23-year-old Northern Illinois University student.

“The defendant is not some teenager who was taking care of a baby for the first time,” Klein said. “He’s an adult man, a father of two. A man who made choices.

Who chose how to conduct himself. Who chose how to handle his baby daughter, Kelis. And what he chose – what he chose makes him guilty of murder.”

Testimony in the trial started Wednesday with Scott. She told the jury how she cleaned, applied lotion to, changed and dressed her daughter in an infant sleeper for the final time in August 2013 after the girl was taken off life support at a Rockford hospital. Klein reminded the jury of that testimony in her closing argument.

Klein held up the infant sleeper, using the piece of clothing to illustrate how small the girl was and held it up next to Terrell to illustrate his size in relation to his daughter.

McCulloch used his closing argument to raise doubts about medical evidence, question when the girl’s injuries happened and to highlight what he considered to be inappropriate tactics used by police investigators. McCulloch said prosecutors had failed to prove their case, listing off the witnesses and police officers who weren’t called to testify at trial.

“Keith Terrell never intended anything,” McCulloch said. “What was the age of the injuries? The pathologist said he couldn’t say. The last doctor said, ‘Well, they’re old, they’re healing.’ ... Those injuries pre-exist Keith being around. And if they do, and if the test is beyond a reasonable doubt, have they proven their case?”

McCulloch said that his client never intended to kill anyone – that, at most, he was guilty of tripping and falling on the girl, an accident. He also suggested that the injuries to Kelis could have been caused by someone else.

“Research shows that early intervention in hearing loss leads to better quality of life and greater success with hearing aids,” said Dr. Charles S. Watson, chief scientist for the National Hearing Test in the United States and professor emeritus of speech and hearing sciences at Indiana University, Bloomington.

Sycamore pool renovations to cost estimated $200K

SYCAMORE – Renovations to make Sycamore’s public pool comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act are expected to cost the park district twice as much as planned, about $200,000.

The 32-year-old pool at 940 E. State St. has several issues related to accessibility into the water basins and in the bathhouse.

Executive Parks Director Dan Gibble said the park board is set to hear and vote on bids for construction later this month.

“It’s going to cost a little bit more than we thought,” he said. “We were estimating close to $100,000. Then we got into the engineering and design work, and we hadn’t factored in the drainage issue.”

Fixing the bathhouse drains is not related to accessibility; however, it is a Health Department requirement, Gibble said.

“It’s largely minor modifications that we’re doing, but the bathhouse modifications are more costly,” he said.

Other bathhouse renovations include adding handicap-accessible toilet and shower stalls in both the men’s and women’s locker rooms, creating wider doorways and walkways, and in-

stalling a wheelchair accessible ramp.

Exterior renovations also must be made to make the main pool, baby pool and hot tub more accessible.

“About five to six years ago, new standards were released that were developed in conjunction with the Department of Justice and the disabled community,” Gibble said.

The Sycamore Park District had to update all facilities that were not in compliance within a reasonable amount of time, so board members established a five-year plan.

Gibble said renovating the pool was last on the list because of previous talk about creating a collaborative DeKalb/ Sycamore pool. Almost half of DeKalb residents surveyed last year said they would not support such a project.

“We didn’t want to spend money at that time if we were going to have a new facility, so we put it in our fifth year of the plan,” Gibble said.

The total cost of renovating all facilities into ADA compliance was about $1 million, Gibble said.

The fiberglass slide going into the baby pool will either be replaced or refurbished depending on the bidding prices; this is not to meet ADA standards but because the slide is in poor condition, Gibble said.

Renovations are expected to be completed before the pool opens next season.

The Associated Press CHICAGO – President Barack Obama urged donors Friday to rally around Democratic candidates for the House in next month’s election, saying a stronger caucus will make the difference on such issues as immigration, rebuilding roads and bridges, and ensuring access to an early education.

Obama said he was confident of victory by Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton on Nov. 8, but said she’ll need supportive members in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives to get things done. Democrats would need to pick up 30 seats to retake the majority.

“It’s an uphill battle. Nancy is the first to acknowledge it,” he said, referring to Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California, who was in attendance.

But he said if Democrats are willing “to really bear down in this last month, if we are, as we say in church, cheerful givers, then I think we’ve got a real shot.”

The Illinois Department of Insurance said 75 percent of Illinois counties will have only one or two insurance companies selling coverage on the health law marketplace for 2017. Man gets 50 years in prison for killing Illinois inmate

EDWARDSVILLE – A Missouri man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for killing another inmate while both men were being held in an Illinois jail.

Madison County State’s Attorney Tom Gibbons said 32-year-old Terrence T. Lee of Jennings, Missouri, pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of first-degree murder and one count of armed robbery.

Lee was charged in July with the death of 61-year-old inmate John E. Newsome Sr. at the Madison County Jail in Edwardsville. Authorities have said Newsome was beaten to death.

At the time of the murder, Lee was being held at the jail on charges he fatally shot a man during a 2014 robbery.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The memories of bombs falling on the battleship USS Arizona were too painful for Raymond Haerry to ever return to Pearl Harbor, while he lived.

But that’s precisely where he wants to be laid to rest.

Haerry was one of the last living crew members on the Arizona during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He died Sept.

27 in Rhode Island at age 94, said his son, Raymond Haerry Jr. He was one of six remaining Arizona survivors. Hundreds of sailors and Marines are entombed in the ship’s sunken hull.

“As he was getting closer to the end, I think he felt that if there’s any place that he’d like to be at rest, it would be with his crewmates, the people who suffered and died on that day,” Haerry Jr. told The Associated Press on Friday.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Hurricane Matthew spared Florida’s most heavily populated stretch from a catastrophic blow Friday but threatened some of the South’s most historic and picturesque cities with ruinous flooding and wind damage as it pushed its way up the coastline.

Among the cities in the crosshairs were St. Augustine, Florida; Savannah, Georgia; and Charleston, South Carolina.

“There are houses that will probably not ever be the same again or not even be there,” St. Augustine Mayor Nancy Shaver lamented as battleship-gray floodwaters coursed through the streets of the 451-year-old city founded by the Spanish.

Matthew – the most powerful hurricane to threaten the Atlantic Seaboard in more than a decade – set off alarm as it closed in on the U.S., having left more than 300 people dead in Haiti.

In the end, it sideswiped Florida’s Atlantic coast early Friday, swamping streets, toppling trees onto homes and knocking out power to more than 1 million people. But it stayed just far enough offshore to prevent major damage to cities like Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. And the coast never felt the full force of its 120 mph winds.

“It looks like we’ve dodged a bullet,” said Rep. Patrick Murphy, a Democrat whose district includes Martin County, just north of West Palm Beach.

At least four people died in Florida. An elderly St. Lucie County couple died from carbon monoxide fumes while running a genera-

tor in their garage and two women were killed in separate events when trees fell on a home and a camper.

While the hurricane was weakening quickly, several northeastern Florida cities, including Jacksonville, were still in harm’s way, along with communities farther up the coast. Authorities warned that not only could Matthew easily turn toward land, it could also cause deadly flooding with its surge of seawater.

The storm gouged out several large sections of the coastal A1A highway north of Daytona Beach, and had nearly completely washed out the northbound lane for about a mile at Flagler Beach.

“It’s pretty bad, it’s jagged all over the place,” said Oliver Shields, whose two-story house is within sight of the highway.

About 500,000 people were under evacuation orders in the Jacksonville area, along with another half-million on the Georgia coast. More than 300,000 fled their homes in South Carolina. The latest forecast showed the storm could also scrape the North Carolina coast.

“If you’re hoping it’s just going to pass far enough offshore that this isn’t a problem anymore – that is a very, very big mistake that you could make that could cost you your life,” National Hurricane Center Director Rick Knabb warned.

Also in the mix Friday: New questions about the Trump campaign’s finances. With roughly a month until Election Day, the campaign has yet to schedule the $100 million in TV advertising that his campaign boasted about two weeks ago. The campaign has half that amount scheduled, and late this week shifted ad money around rather than increasing its overall investment, suggesting a bit of penny-pinching even as the clock winds down.

That could mean his fundraising has slowed, and that he’s less willing to write a big personal check as he once promised.

While Trump has survived numerous controversies that would have sunk other candidates, Friday’s developments come at a crucial moment in the race. Less than five weeks from Election Day, Trump still needs to expand his support to overtake Clinton, and is struggling in particular with minorities and women.

The unearthed video of Trump’s 2005 comments seemed likely to make any effort to win over women exceedingly more difficult.

NEW YORK – Donald Trump reeled Friday under a barrage of campaign missteps and scandalous revelations of lewd comments he made about women several years ago, undermining the Republican’s attempts to steady a presidential bid at risk of imploding.

Trump tried to head off some of the damage by issuing a statement apologizing “if anyone was offended” by vulgar remarks captured on a 2005 tape and made public Friday for the first time. In the recording obtained

by The Washington Post and NBC News, Trump describes trying to have sex with a married woman and brags about women letting him kiss and grab them because he is famous.

“When you’re a star they let you do it,” Trump said. “You can do anything.”

He adds seconds later, “Grab them by the [expletive]. You can do anything.”

Hillary Clinton seized on her rival’s comments, calling them “horrific.” She said in a Twitter message: “We cannot allow this man to become president.”

But she had her own problems with revelations.

The WikiLeaks organization posted what it said were thousands of emails from Clinton c a m p a i g n c h a i r m a n Donald John Podesta, includ- Trump ing some with excerpts from speeches she gave to Wall Street executives and others – speeches she has declined to release despite demands from Trump.

The excerpts include Clinton suggesting that Wall Street insiders are best equipped to help reform the financial sector. She also said that presidential candidates for both parties must have tens of millions in contributions from New York to mount competitive national campaigns.

Trump has insisted that she is too cozy with Wall Street to reform it.

Thumbs-up to easier disposal of unwanted items

Thumbs-up: To making it easier to dispose of unwanted items. The city of Sycamore is adding a service to its trash collection service with Waste Management, wherein residents can call 800-449-7587 or log on to wmtatyourdoor.com to have a collection kit sent to their home and schedule a pickup.

Since Illinois law was changed to no longer allow electronics to be buried in landfills, it has become increasingly difficult to dispose of items, especially bulky old tube TVs, which sometimes are abandoned in public.

Hopefully, this new service will cut down on or eliminate that problem.

Thumbs-down: To “clowning” threats.

The fad, which began in August in South Carolina, can be simple fun, but when people start taking it too far, it becomes troublesome. In Prophetstown this week, a student was arrested after making threats to attack local schools using a clown-inspired alias; students in DeKalb School District 428 reported similar incidents on social media this week, prompting district officials and police to send a message to parents. Fads are fads, but threats against schools are never in style. Let’s hope this social media driven trend soon fades from the scene.

Thumbs-up: To showcasing DeKalb’s arts scene. More than 25 businesses, galleries and Northern Illinois University buildings served as stops on the inaugural DeKalb/ NIU Art Walk on Thursday, some of which drew standingroom-only crowds. We’re pleased to see an event raising the public profile of the local arts scene – the area’s cultural offerings are plentiful, particularly for its population. Hopefully, the event was sufficiently successful for them to do it again next year.

Thumbs-up: To the Cubs in the playoffs once again. Manager Joe Maddon’s team used exceptional pitching, stellar defense and clutch hitting to run up a 103-58-1 record during the regular season, and expectations are high for the long-losing franchise. We would love to see the Cubs finally end their 108-year championship drought this year, and the first obstacle is a significant one: the San Francisco Giants, who have won three of the past six World Series titles.

Let’s see a deep playoff run that builds baseball excitement to a fever pitch – that’s always a great way to spend October.

Officials must confront 911 issue

When the 911 system went down for a few hours in California’s Coachella Valley earlier this year, local officials called for a state and federal investigation.

In DeKalb County, the enhanced 911 system was not fully functional for about 36 hours, including several hours where callers heard a busy signal, and the local 911 board didn’t even put the matter on its agenda this week.

No one from Frontier Communications, the company responsible for maintaining the system, showed up to talk about the problem in a public forum.

Tom Kuschman, Frontier Communication’s general manager for the northern Illinois region, said he would have sent someone to the meeting had he known it was taking place, but Glenna Johnson, the county’s 911 coordinator and the only public employee who works specifically on the 911 system, didn’t call to let him know or ask the company to attend.

As far as we’re concerned, they’re all at fault, as are the state regulators and officials who have deemed fit to let this slide.

It’s simply inexcusable that the 911 board wouldn’t plan a public discussion about a system outage that posed such a serious public safety risk. If a countywide 911 outage doesn’t make the 911 board’s agenda, that board should be dissolved.

Frontier, which maintains the system, should have made a point to publicly address how the outage occurred and tell the public how it would be prevented in the future, or discuss ways to restore service more quickly in the event of another outage.

This month’s 911 board meeting ought to have

been circled in red on the company’s calendar.

It appears the state regulators at the Illinois Commerce Commission couldn’t find the time to return phone calls from a reporter about the problem. How come state Reps. Bob Pritchard or Tom Demmer, or state Sens. Dave Syverson and Tim Bivins, all of whom represent DeKalb County in Springfield, haven’t demanded any explanation from them?

It’s almost as if everyone – from the company that maintains the system to the local and state officials who oversee it – would like us all to forget this ever happened.

It’s fortunate no one died. People expect that when they dial 911 in an emergency, they will be able to speak with someone who can immediately get them help. The data that the E-911 system provides to dispatchers and by extension to first responders is the difference between life and death on a daily basis in DeKalb County.

There is room for improvement in the official response to the crisis. It was hours before local media, including the Daily Chronicle, were alerted, and conflicting information was put out from officials on what level of service was available. No one was able to give a good explanation of what happened and how long it would take to fix.

That in itself can be excused – this was one of the most prolonged outages in Illinois – but the lack of self-examination cannot be.

An investigation and a thorough public accounting of this incident is in order. It would be nice to see our local officials acknowledge that.

If they refuse to do so, then a federal investigation is necessary here, as well.

No need to admire foreign leaders?

Asked on a TV show to name a foreign leader he admires, Libertarian Party presidential candidate Gov. Gary Johnson choked. He couldn’t produce a name. He said he had “a brain freeze.” The media pounced.

“Unable to name a foreign leader,” sneered NPR. “Cannot name one,” echoed USA Today.

But that’s just unfair. Johnson wasn’t asked to name a foreign leader.

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews asked him to name one he admires.

Why should he admire any of them?

Johnson should have dismissed the question outright for its pro-government bias. Why presume that everyone should venerate “leaders?”

If we’re free, we lead ourselves. Stop giving the politicians the credit.

We libertarians admire free individuals, entrepreneurs and sometimes activists who resist government. We don’t idolize politicians.

What I wish Johnson had said was, “Asking libertarians to pick their favorite politicians is like asking vegans how they like their steak cooked. I don’t even like most politicians. I don’t respect schemers who long to rule over others. If we must have politicians, at least make them heads of state who

Unfortunately, Johnson didn’t say that. Instead he struggled to remember the name of the former president of Mexico, Vicente Fox, who supports free trade and legalizing drugs.

A Time Magazine writer smugly wrote that she would “offer Johnson some assistance” by providing a list of leaders. Heading up Time’s list was Russia’s Vladimir Putin. Are you kidding me? He’s a cruel authoritarian who robs his own country.

Time also threw in Pope Francis, probably because Francis doesn’t like capitalism very much.

Johnson also might have told Matthews, “I’m sure someone like you, Chris, who worships the state, has a dozen favorite leaders who love presiding over others. But I don’t. In fact, my favorite president was George Washington because when they asked him to become a king, he refused. If Hillary

Clinton or Donald Trump were asked, they’d leap at the chance.”

When politicians do the right thing, we should take note. But usually they don’t. So politicians rarely appear on my list of heroes.

But the media fawn over politicians.

When Ed Koch, former mayor of New York City, passed away, newspapers ran 100 stories about him. We heard little about other people who died that month but who probably did more for the world – people in the private sector, people who don’t mooch off taxpayers.

There were zero major news stories about the death of Joseph “Pep” Simek.

He co-founded Tombstone Pizza out of the back of a bar and created more than 1,000 jobs.

There were no major news stories about Ralph Braun. He founded BraunAbility, a company that makes wheelchair lifts for people who need them, including himself. His company has made life easier for the disabled, and it, too, employs more than 1,000 people.

Likewise, there were long obits the day that former senator Edmund Muskie died but little about David Packard, who died the same day.

Packard founded Hewlett-Packard, which gave us innovation such as laser

printers and created enormous wealth.

Sen. Muskie was best known for crying at a news conference.

The media blathered on for weeks after Sen. Ted Kennedy died. But that year Norman Borlaug died, too. His crop-breeding techniques have saved a billion lives. Ted Kennedy? I won’t go there ...

The media love politicians. But when it comes to improving lives, entrepreneurs accomplish much more.

One refreshing thing about Johnson is that he’s not just a former governor – he has also run businesses. He knows politics is not the most admirable thing people do. To me, that makes him smarter than those who speak with reverence for “public service” as if only government serves the public.

Gary Johnson is mocked because he can’t name a foreign leader he admires. Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump push bad policies that should keep them off anyone’s list of great heads of state.

With 1:38 left in Friday’s football game against undefeated Genoa-Kingston, Dixon’s quarterback dropped back on first down with the Dukes trying to make a late comeback.

Wilcox practiced his best moves to try to elude defenders, but there were

too many Genoa-Kingston suitors interested more in tackling him than dancing. The sack started the drive, which ended a few moments later with an incomplete pass.

The Dukes’ offense never found any rhythm in a 14-6 loss to the Big Northern Conference leaders.

“That was a battle,” G-K coach Bill McCarty said. “Both defenses played very well. I can’t compliment them enough. It was just a tough game.”

The Cogs (7-0, 7-0 BNC) started fast with a 32-yard pass from Zach Butler

to Zach Miller on their first offensive play. Six plays later, Butler connected with Justin McNeal for an 19-yard touchdown pass.

Butler threw for 147 yards and rushed for 57.

“They did the things we practiced for,” Dixon defensive lineman Ryan Troutman said. “We just didn’t come out doing the things on defense to stop them. As the game went on, we did a better job of containing their quarterback.”

The Cogs went up by two scores with 5:27 left in the second quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by Aidan Simmons. The run capped an eight-play, 58-yard drive.

“I think the defense played well all

game,” Dixon coach Dave Smith said.

“Our offense put them in some bad spots in the first half. Our offense never really got moving.”

Dixon’s lone score was set up by a fumble recovery by Finn Brandon on the Cogs’ 36-yard line. It was one of six fumbles by the Cogs, but Dixon recovered only two of them.

Dixon (5-2, 4-2), which was held to 156 total yards of offense, scored on a 14-yard screen pass from Wilcox to Arthur Cox. “They spread you out, and Cox can be really dangerous,” McCarty said. “It makes it very difficult, but we handled it really well.”

The Cogs play host to Richmond-Burton at 7 p.m. Friday.

YORKVILLE – Yorkville took the lead on a 54-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter – by far the biggest play for either team – and then the Sycamore offense went three-and-out.

At that point, the Spartans defense took things to the next level, not allowing a first down on the last three Yorkville possessions and allowing the offense to score the decisive touchdown with 3:19 left in a 21-14 win.

Jake Peloquin sealed the win for the Spartans (4-3 overall, 2-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) with an interception in the closing minute, bringing the ball down to the Yorkville 5 and allowing Sycamore to run out the clock against the Foxes (1-6, 0-3).

“There was a lot going through my mind right there,” Peloquin said. “I was just excited for the win.”

Yorkville took the lead with 8:21 left in the game when quarterback Ty Liaromatis found Jason Lewan for a gain, then a missed tackle let Lewan go 54 yards for the score and a 14-13 lead.

The Foxes held on the next Sycamore possession, but Donovan Smith kicked a 49-yard punt. Yorkville gained only 1 yard on the next possession, then a bad punt gave the Spartans the ball on the Yorkville 40. On third-and-10 from the 20, Ty Sulaver hit Jordan Tolzin on a streak for a touchdown.

Sulaver then found Smith for the two-point conversion and the seven-point lead with 3:19 left.

“We’ve been in close situations before,” Peloquin said.

“It’s just like any other game.

We have to hunker down and figure out our best options and formations. We just came together and did a great job.”

The Sycamore defense forced a three-and-out, but Yorkville answered with a stand of its own, getting the ball back with 2:32 left on its own

“It starts with the special teams, because Donovan had a great punt to pin them back,” Sycamore coach Joe Ryan said.

“Then the defense got a threeand-out, and they had to shortpunt it, and we had a short field.

It was a nice pass when Ty hit Jordan for the touchdown. We had a lot of guys making plays.

We had a lot of guys fill in because we had a lot of injuries.”

The Foxes scored first in the game when Liaromatis went 3 yards on a bootleg on thirdand-1 on the first play of the second quarter. Sycamore answered with a 6-minute drive, capped by a 24-yard pass from Sulaver to Tolzin on fourthand-9 to tie the score.

“We just took the shots when we had them, and Jordan made some great catches tonight,” Ryan said. “In games like this that are tight, your playmakers need to make plays. And I thought ours did.”

Late in the third, Peloquin recovered a fumble on the Yorkville 16, giving the Spartans a short field. On the last play of the quarter, Peyton Wiegmann dove in from 1 yard out on fourth-and-goal to give the Spartans a 13-7 lead.

“It was a grind-it-out game,” Ryan said. “They are so physical on defense. They are so good on defense, and they run the ball. It was just a grind-outgame, and it showed a lot of character to get the win, especially after they went up, 14-13, in the fourth quarter.”

Wiegmann, playing in place of injured starter Chris Pawola, had 21 carries for 74 yards. Sulaver was 13 for 23 for 144 yards and two touchdowns.

Austin Avery led the Foxes with 66 yards on 11 carries.

“We had a lot of people hurt and a lot of people step in,” Peloquin said. “But on special teams, we pinned them deep, Donovan had some great punts.

Ty was commanding the offense, and our defense really took it to them.”

DeKalb scored on six of its first eight drives, including their first play from scrimmage of the second half. On that play, running back Delvin Williams took a handoff up the middle and found daylight after he made a cut toward the sidelines and danced his way to a 48-yard touchdown as he tip-toed for the last 10 yards. Williams led the Barbs in rushing with nine carries for 92 yards and the score.

While the Barbs’ offense was clicking, the defense responded by posting its first shutout of the season.

The defense forced the Pirates to punt on five of their nine possessions and had two interceptions that were returned into Ottawa territory. The Pirates were led by receiver Eric Fox, who finished with 57 yards on five catches.

“It’s always big to shut a team out, especially when you can get more players in the game and everyone can be a part of it,” Weckler said. “Whenever you can get more of the roster on the field and help in a victory, it helps with the morale of the team for those guys to have a role in the program and our success.”

Hawks playoff bound Knights run over at home

jseverson@shawmedia.com KIRKLAND – Hiawatha senior running back Braden Watson was overcome with emotion as he limped off the field.

The playoff drought finally is over.

For the first time in almost three decades, the Hawks are postseason-bound after senior foreign-exchange student Lucas Rodriguez made a field goal as time expired in a wild 24-21 win over Westminster Christian on Friday night.

“It’s a whole new coaching staff, a whole new team and we proved we can do it,” a glassy-eyed Watson said after the game. “It’s what I’ve always wanted.”

Watson’s father, Nathan, was a member of Hiawatha’s 1987 team – which was the last time the Hawks had made the playoffs.

The Hawks’ 24-year-old first-year coach Jason Keneway, who graduated from Hiawatha in 2009, was also emotional after the game – as players shared cheers and hugs that the 29year drought was over.

“It’s my first year, but I went here and the burden was on my shoulders as a player, but I’ve never felt so much pressure that I put on myself,” said Keneway, whose team had five wins and didn’t make the playoffs in his senior year. “I felt like the weight of the town was on my shoulders. It’s do or die and we did it. We did it. We did it. It’s everything I wanted.”

The Hawks certainly ended the

drought in style.

Facing a second-and-goal from the Westminster 7-yard line, the play clock dropped below five seconds when the Hawks got one more play off – a Watson 2-yard run – before calling their final timeout with one second left.

Rodriguez, who came to Hiawatha from Madrid, Spain, lined up and made a 24-yard field goal that took a 29-year weight off the shoulders of the Hawks.

“I was so nervous,” Rodriguez said.

“I was really, really nervous. It’s incredible.”

The Hawks (5-2 overall, 5-2 in Northeastern Athletic Conference) got another big game from Watson, who carried it 27 times for 125 yards and a touchdown. At the end of the second quarter, with the Hawks leading 21-7, Westminster elected to go for it on the Hiawatha 5-yard line with two seconds left and Watson batted down a pass from Warriors quarterback Tannor Park.

“Braden is all over the field and he doesn’t have an ounce of quit in him,” Keneway said. “He needed to come out a few times and I told him, Braden, I need you.”

Hiawatha quarterback Ethan Hoffman was only 6 for 9 with 49 yards, but he threw a 25-yard touchdown pass on a screen to Jacob Edwards and also had a 2-yard rushing touchdown. He also came up with the biggest first down of the game. With the Hawks facing a fourth-and-1 on the Westminster 46-yard line in their final drive, Hoffman ran a quarterback sneak for two yards to keep the drive alive.

In both of its losses this season, Morris had gotten off to slow starts on the road. Before Friday night’s game, Morris coach Alan Thorson challenged his team to not do it again.

Whatever he said worked.

Morris (5-2, 2-1) began the Northern Illinois Big 12 East contest by holding Kaneland to a three-and-out, sparked by a 10-yard sack by Sean Grogan.

Then, fullback Keagan Sobol broke free for a 51-yard touchdown run on Morris’ first play from scrimmage, providing the opening shot in a 34-3 victory.

“We knew we had to get out of the gates quick,” Sobol said. “Kaneland can put up points, so we knew we had to keep up with them. Our first two road games, we didn’t start off very well, but you could tell even on the bus that this game was going to be different.”

Morris kept running all night, finishing with more than 450 rushing yards. Michael Feeney led the way with 171 yards on 18 carries, while Sobol had 126 yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries. Quarterback Ricky Del Favero also topped 100 yards, getting 101 on eight attempts, including a 45-yard touchdown.

In the frist quarter, Kaneland’s defense kept things close.

Drew Hahn recovered a fumble

at the Morris 33, and the Knights reached the 9 before Andreas Matarangas kicked a 26-yard field goal to make it 7-3. On the next drive, Kaneland’s Luke Calabrese intercepted Del Favero at the Knights’ 41, but they couldn’t score.

Kaneland (3-4, 1-3) punted and Morris embarked on an 80-yard drive, highlighted by a 40-yard burst by Del Favero, that ended with Sobol in the end zone and a 14-3 lead with 8:54 to go until halftime. Morris linebacker Merrick Hairapetian recovered a Kaneland fumble at the Knights’ 46 and Sobol scored for the third time to make it 21-3.

Morris got the ball to start the second half and scored quickly, as Del Favero burst through the middle of the Kaneland defense for a 45-yard TD. Kaneland was able to get a 38-yard pass play from Jack Douglas to Alex Moses late in the third quafter that helped them reach the Morris 19, but Redskin defensive back Delaney Stutzki intercepted Douglas on the final play of the third quarter. Morris then salted the game away with an 11-play, 56-yard drive to make it 34-3.

“Kaneland is a good program and very well-coached,” Morris coach Alan Thorson said. “I challenged some of our guys before the game, and they responded. This is probably the best game we have played, start to finish, all season.”

Jonathan Alstott led Kaneland’s offense with 39 rushing yards on 10 carries, while Douglas passed for 91 yards.

“He has complete control of the offense,” Carey said. “He’s been here awhile, that’s why we recruited him here. (I) certainly feel good about how he executed for the majority of the time. (I) would like to think there is better execution out there left for him, too. And I think he feels the same way.”

The Broncos haven’t done their opponents any favors, either. They are the only team in the country not to commit a turnover this season. The Huskies’ secondary will have its hands full against receiver Corey Davis, who is the MAC’s all-time leading receiver with 4,252 yards. The senior out of Wheaton Warrenville South also is the nation’s active leader in receiving yards, more than 1,000 yards better than second-place Zay Jones from East Carolina (3,228).

“Corey is a good football player,” Carey said of Davis, who had seven catches for 123 yards against the Huskies last year. “He runs good routes, has good speed, good physical toughness, good strength, good route run-

ner. I think a better question would be, ‘What’s his weakness?’ I don’t know if he has one.”

incredibly accurate this season for the Broncos. He’s completing nearly 70 percent of his passes, with 12 touchdowns and no interceptions. He is averaging 212.6 passing yards per game.

DeKALB – Western Michigan football coach PJ Fleck never has beaten Northern Illinois.

Even though the undefeated Broncos come in as a clear-cut favorite, Fleck said the road to the Mid-American Conference West title still runs through the Huskies. The teams face off at 5:30 p.m. today in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

“Northern Illinois is a heck of a football team,” Fleck said, a Kaneland alumnus who played for the Huskies from 1999 to 2003. “They’re the team to beat in the league. They have won it six straight (MAC West titles). The old saying, if you want to be a champion, you have to beat a champion. You can be a contender all you want, you can fight 20 contender fights, but it doesn’t matter until you beat a champion. This is the team that everybody has wanted to be like and been chasing.”

The Broncos (5-0 overall, 1-0 MAC West) have put together an impressive résumé midway through the season.

They have two wins over Big Ten opponents – 22-21 over Northwestern and 3410 over Illinois. In the conference opener, which was supposed to be a close game at Central Michigan, the Broncos came in as a three-point favorites and won, 49-10.

They are 20-point favorites against the Huskies.

“A lot of the same guys back for them, certainly, familiar with a lot of their names,” NIU coach Rod Carey said. “Good in all three phases, offense, defense, special teams, and playing at a high level right now, no question.”

Western Michigan comes in ranked No. 25 in the coaches poll, which is the first time the Broncos have cracked the top 25 in program history. Although the Broncos were the preseason pick to win the MAC West, NIU has won seven straight over Western Michigan, including three times in Kalamazoo.

Since Fleck took over in 2013, the Huskies are the only MAC West team he hasn’t beaten, including a 27-19 loss last year in DeKalb.

The Huskies (1-4, 1-0) are coming off their best outing of the season in a 3124 win at Ball State in their conference opener. Despite having three turnovers on the day, the Huskies racked up 653 yards of offense.

Game 1 features smart pitching

CHICAGO – Johnny Cueto is very good; so good, in fact, that it would have been hard for the Cubs to use rust as an excuse Friday night. All the oil in the world wouldn’t have helped them figure out where Cueto’s pitches were coming from at times.

Jon Lester is very good, too; so good that it would have been hard for the Giants to use a rough travel experience as an excuse. All the travel agents in the world wouldn’t have helped them solve Lester.

Back and forth the two pitchers went Friday in a duel to settle Game 1 of a National League Division Series.

It might not have been what the Cubs, the big league’s best team in the regular season, had in mind when they got back to business after a five-day layoff.

But this is big-boy baseball, and the Giants are a big-boy team.

Cueto didn’t give up a hit until the fourth inning. Lester had given up five hits but no runs to that point. Neither had given up a run through six, and neither had allowed a walk. Cueto struck out the side in the sixth.

And so it went.

No surprise. Cueto was a World Series star for the Royals last season.

In the regular season, Lester was 10-2 with a 1.74 ERA at Wrigley Field.

So forget the rust angle or the difficulties of winning a wild-card game and then traveling. Give a nod to good pitching.

Finally, in the eighth inning, the Cubs’ Javier Baez turned on his heels and sent a Cueto pitch into the leftfield basket. He flipped his bat and didn’t even look at the ball, as if he knew it was out. If he did, he was the only one in the park.

It was enough for a 1-0 Cubs’ victory, a first step on what they hope is the road to a World Series title.

Everybody understands speed. Everybody understands a power pitcher.

Lester isn’t that. He can throw 93 or 94 mph, which is fine and good but also like a lot of other major league pitchers. What sets him apart is the ability to put the ball where he thinks it should go. He gave up five hits in eight innings.

The easy part is throwing it hard.

The hard part is pitching.

“You look at his ability to recreate his pitching motion, he’s a real strike-thrower,’’ Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “I really believe that he’s one of the guys that if you look on a body basis, he can really throw a

VIEWS Rick Morrissey strike when he wants to. And there’s sometimes when he doesn’t want to know and he doesn’t. Repetition of delivery, he’s got the cutter, slider, whatever you want to call it, it’s really the location. So it’s his personality is kind of quiet, but he’s very, very confident.’’

Lots of people compare Kyle Hendricks, who will start Game 2 for the Cubs, to Greg Maddux. Maddux was the thinking man’s pitcher. Hendricks went to Dartmouth.

“He’s a Maddux-type pitcher,’’ Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “He’s cerebral, great stuff, great command, moves the ball around.’’

But Lester is a little like Maddux, too. He doesn’t have Maddux’s pitch movement, but his 2.44 earned-run average this season was Maddux-esque.

Maddux is probably getting sick of getting compared to mere earthlings.

Lester got batters to hit ground balls this season 46.9 percent of the time. His career average is 47 percent. If there’s a better definition of consistent, I’m not sure what it would be. But where Lester really stood out was in runners left on base. He led the majors by stranding 84.9 percent of baserunners. Maddux’s best in a season was 82.9 percent.

Let’s agree they’re all intelligent pitchers.

Lester’s personal catcher, David Ross, was excellent behind the plate Friday night, throwing out Gorkys Hernandez trying to steal second in the first inning and catching Conor Gillaspie leaning too far off first base in the third.

Lester, who has had trouble throwing to first base, threw out Kelby Tomlinson on a grounder in the second inning, even if it was an underhanded throw. In the sixth, he took a one-hopper from Buster Posey and ran it to first base. Some day, his fielding might catch up with him. Until then, it’s considered a Web Gem. Cueto is pretty smart, too. He threw an 82 mph changeup that Anthony Rizzo was so in front of, he might as well have been in Lake Michigan. Cueto varied his windup, sometimes almost turning his back to the batter, sometimes pauses on the rubber before he threw.

Both pitchers benefited from a steady wind blowing in from the northwest. Ross ripped a line shot to left field that got knocked down enough by the wind to give Hernandez time to make a diving grab. But that wind couldn’t stop Baez’s homer, try as it might.

Cubs follow formula for success in win

“That’s a really tough team over there,” catcher David Ross said before the series opened. “They’ve got a high payroll. They’ve got MVPs, they’ve got Cy Youngs, they’ve got Gold Gloves.

That’s why they’re tough to beat.”

Baez worked the count full, then launched a high fly ball that left fielder Angel Pagan camped under at the wall – as it landed above his head in the basket, with the crowd finally having something to get loud about as Wrigley Field started to shake.

It didn’t stop until Baez acknowledged the curtain call and one last huge ovation.

Cueto retired the first 10 Cubs before Kris Bryant doubled to the wall in left field with one out in the fourth.

Bryant advanced to third on Anthony Rizzo’s grounder into the right-side shift, and looked like he was going to score the first run of the game when Ben Zobrist followed with a rocket headed for the hole between first and second.

But second baseman Kelby Tomlinson snared it as just as it looked like it was past him and threw to first for the inning ender.

CHICAGO – Just the way they drew it up.

And just like that, the Cubs took a 1-0 lead in a best-of-five National League Division Series that delivered, for at least this Friday night, on its promise of dominant starting pitching and low-scoring games.

Lester allowed five hits in eight scoreless innings, but none after the fourth as he retired the final 13 he faced before giving way to closer Aroldis Chapman for a scoreless ninth.

It certainly wasn’t as easy as it sounds – not even the ninth, when Chapman gave up a two-out double to put the tying run in scoring position before retiring the dangerous Hunter Pence to end the game.

And of course it’s an even-numbered year against the Giants (who won in 2010, 2012 and 2014).

“They’ve been on that big stage and succeeded,” Ross said. “That’s a lot of rings in that clubhouse.”

But the Cubs had their 103-win success coming into the game, too.

And Lester and Ross have three rings between them, too.

And when Ross picked off Gorkys Hernandez after a bunt single leading off the game, he helped set the tone for Lester in the veteran left-hander’s 15th postseason start.

The Cubs mustered only three hits in the game against Cueto, but only needed one.

Baez, the fielding ace who started at second for his Gold Glove-caliber defense, has been almost overlooked for his more consistent .273 production this season that included 14 regular-season home runs.

As he came to bat in the eighth with one out, Chapman already was warming in the bullpen, signaling manager Joe

“No reason to answer that question,” All-Star first baseman Anthony Rizzo said of the win-it-all-or-fail specter hanging in the fall air. “We don’t plan on that.”

How could they? The 103-win Cubs had the best record in baseball all season, except for a brief stretch in July when the Giants did.

“We don’t put that in our head. We don’t play the what-if game,” Kris Bryant said. “If you just look at what we have here, over the next, I don’t know, five or six years, we hope to be making runs like this all the time. But certainly we have a

chance here, and we’re not going to take it for granted. We’re going to give it all we’ve got. But I don’t think you put that type of (win-or-bust) pressure on yourself. Nothing good comes from that.”

Besides, these Cubs aren’t looking at the past century for motivation this month.

“We’re looking at it more about last year, what happened last year,” Dexter Fowler said. “We’ve all gone through this together, and everybody’s eager to get back, and get back to winning.”

Close ones: The Cubs were 22-23 in onerun games this season, while the Giants were 28-27.

The teams played one-run games in their past five meetings, with the Cubs winning three.

“The last series we played here, it was a great series,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “They came out on top, but it was good baseball, good tight ball games and a lot of moves were made, and I’m sure this series is going to be similar.”

Arm strength: Catcher David Ross has handled many strong pitching staffs, including the Dodgers, Braves and Red Sox, in his career.

“They’re all unique,” he said. “And I’ve grown as a player (handling pitchers). Boston had power arms. But I think this year’s team probably has more power arms.”

New kid in town: Relief pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. will taste the playoffs in his rookie year, the way many of his teammates did last season.

“I think it matters, but I don’t want to think about it,” he said of having experience. “I just want to continue to be myself.”

Manager Joe Maddon put the young right-hander in pressure situations during the season, saying he wanted him to experience those moments.

It helped, Edwards said.

“It’s trust in me, and he also knew I would much rather be in those situations.”

The Colts let tight end Coby Fleener escape to New Orleans to keep Dwayne Allen, but Allen is off to a slow start this year with only 11 catches for 133 yards and one touchdown.

Frank Gore still can run the ball at 33; the Colts just don’t try it that often, as Gore is averaging only 16 carries for 63 yards a game.

Rookie Ryan Kelly was drafted in the first round this year to anchor the line at center, and Anthony Costanzo at left tackle is the only other Colts blocker worth mentioning.

The Bears had their best game against the run last week with Will Sutton (in for Eddie Goldman at nose

tackle), Mitch Unrein and Akiem Hicks all playing their best games of the year.

There’s a chance they’ll get inside linebacker Danny Trevathan back playing with a brace on his surgically repaired thumb, which would be a huge upgrade.

Unfortunately, the Bears are only 21st in the NFL rushing the passer, LB Pernell McPhee, OLB Lamarr Houston and NT Eddie Goldman won’t be back any time soon, and OLB Willie Young has been MIA the past two weeks while OLB Leonard Floyd has been extremely slow to develop, and is listed as questionable with a calf injury.

The Bears must find a rush somewhere if they are going to limit Luck.

Defensively, the Colts are awful – 24th in total defense and 30th in points allowed.

Indianapolis doesn’t do anything particularly well on defense – why it allowed free-agent LB Jerrell Freeman to leave for Bears is the eighth wonder of the world – and they only boast one playmaker offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains has to scheme for.

Cornerback Vontae Davis is that guy, and he almost certainly will shadow Bears receiver Alshon Jeffery all day.

With WR Kevin White now injured and Eddie Royal likely out or at least limited after missing practice all week, Loggains has to beat the Colts with Cameron Meredith, Josh Bellamy and Jeffery catching the ball.

At 33, Robert Mathis is a once great pass rusher who isn’t any more, and D’Qwell Jackson has lost a step and a half at linebacker.

Designated pass rusher Eric Walden does have four sacks, but with only one guy to scheme for, the Bears should be able to protect QB Brian Hoyer.

Common sense suggests now that the Bears have discovered RB Jordan Howard, this is the game to ride him for all he’s worth, not only to anchor the Bears’ offense, but also to keep Luck off the field.

If the Colts and Luck win the time-of-possession battle, an area where the Bears are only 30th in the league and Indianapolis is eighth, the Bears could be in real trouble.

The Bears might have a problem Sunday in Indianapolis.

Many of us picked the Bears on Sunday over Detroit because they finally were getting a team they were evenly matched with, they were in as close as you can get to a must-win situation, and they were at home.

This week, the Colts find themselves in the same situation the Bears were in last week. Indianapolis is Andrew Luck desperate for a win, and although they have some obvious weaknesses, the Bears might not have enough strengths to exploit them.

Colts quarterback Andrew Luck still is the best young quarterback in the game. He is one of the NFL’s great competitors, and he often refuses to get beat even when everything around him is breaking down.

That is how you explain the fact that although Indy is only 17th in the league in total offense, 24th running the ball and 13th throwing it, they are seventh in points scored.

Perhaps Luck’s greatest accomplishment is that the Colts are seventh

Diet, lifestyle can ease GERD pain Dear Dr K: Can lifestyle changes help relieve my heartburn?

Dear Reader: Heartburn is an uncomfortable burning sensation. It results from a condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or “reflux.” With GERD, stomach acid surges up into the esophagus, the “swallowing tube” that connects our mouth to our stomach.

Our stomachs make acid to help digest food. The lining of our stomachs is built to resist injury from the acid. The lining of the esophagus, however, easily is injured by acid.

To protect the lining of the esophagus from acid, there is a circular ring of muscle where the esophagus joins the stomach. It’s called the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES. The ring opens to allow food we’ve swallowed into the stomach. Then it clamps down, preventing acid from reaching the esophagus.

In GERD, the LES doesn’t clamp down enough. As a result, stomach acid squirts up into the lower esophagus. This irritates the lining, causing the sensation of burning.

Fortunately, diet and lifestyle changes can help prevent reflux. Here are some things you can try: • Eat several smaller meals throughout the day, rather than one or two big meals.

A stomach full from a big meal (and acid) is more likely to cause GERD. • Relax when you eat. Sit down and eat slowly. Stress increases stomach acid production.

• Remain upright after eating. Try not to bend over or strain to lift heavy objects for at least three hours after eating. This raises pressure in your stomach, which causes stomach contents to reflux up into the esophagus.

• Avoid eating within three hours of going to bed. Do not eat bedtime snacks. Food (and acid) in the stomach refluxes more easily when you’re lying down.

• Lose weight. Excess pounds increase

• Loosen up. Avoid tight belts, waistbands and other clothing that puts pressure on your stomach.

• Avoid foods that can trigger reflux: highfat foods, spicy dishes, tomatoes and tomato products, citrus fruits, garlic, onions, milk, carbonated drinks, coffee (including decaf), tea, chocolate, mints and alcohol. They all relax the circular muscle and make reflux more likely.

• Stop smoking. Nicotine stimulates stomach acid production. It also impairs the function of the muscle that keeps food and acidic juices in the stomach.

• Chew (sugarless) gum. It increases saliva production, soothing the esophagus and washing acid back down to the stomach.

• Discuss your medications with your doctor. Certain drugs, including aspirin and other NSAIDs, oral contraceptives, narcotics, certain antidepressants and some asthma medications can cause heartburn.

• Raise your bed’s head. Elevate the head of your bed by placing a wedge under your upper body. Don’t elevate your head with extra pillows. That makes reflux worse by bending you at the waist.

• Exercise wisely. Wait at least two hours after a meal before exercising.

• Try herbal remedies. Certain herbs, including chamomile, ginger and licorice, may help relieve heartburn symptoms.

SEASONAL UDC WAREHOUSE WORKERS

• Safely and efficiently handle and move merchandise using power equipment as needed • Receive and unload cartons or pallets from trailers • Locate and remove pallets of merchandise in storage locations • Able to lift and carry merchandise weighing up to 47 lbs. regularly, and up to 60 lbs. on an infrequent basis

RN: $25.00 - $27.50 per hour (depending upon experience) LPN: $20.00 - $22.00 per hour (depending upon experience) • Additional $3.00 per hour for Evening and Night Shift • Additional $1.00 per hour for Weekend

SEASONAL OPERATIONS TEAM MEMBERS

Hear, hear! That has been our theme this week. To end, a deal that requires impeccable timing for declarer to make his contract.

South is in four spades. West leads the heart king. What should declarer do?

North’s two-spade raise is no thing of beauty, but with three trumps, an ace and a doubleton, it is the right response. (Note that if you employ two-over-one and a forcing one-no-trump response, when having three-card major-suit support, you should go via one no-trump only with an even weaker hand than this and typically 4-3-3-3 distribution.) South, because his hand is balanced, is thin for a jump to game, but it pays to be aggressive, especially when vulnerable.

First, South must assume trumps are 3-2. Even then, he is faced with four losers in his hand: one spade, two hearts and one diamond. He must aim to ruff his third heart in the dummy -- but how?

Suppose declarer wins the first trick and returns a heart. Here, West can play a third heart, and East will overruff the dummy. Then East can put West in with the diamond ace and ruff the next heart, effecting an uppercut that produces down two.

The secret is to duck the first trick, win the heart-queen continuation, cash two top trumps, and only then ruff South’s last heart. Even if East could overruff, it would be with his trump trick.
