My only hope is that my daughter will have enough self-esteem to shrug off the haters of the world.

From the day Hannah Jo was born, she was vibrant, smart – and huge. It took 24 hours of labor to deliver my 9-pound buxom baby. Being a first-time mother, I didn’t think anything of it, until visitors would comment on how big she was.

It made me feel, honestly, quite sad. My hormones were all over the place. My emotions were raw and susceptible to mean jokes.

Quickly, my husband and I started to get defensive and say we are so glad she is super-healthy.

We were proud of our big beauty. She was gaining weight at every wellness check. She was meeting all of her milestones. My husband and I felt like she was strong and sweet all at the same time.

So she had more meat on her bones than other babies. She couldn’t help it. Hannah Jo is genetically predisposed to be large. Her father is 6-foot-4, and her paternal grandmother is at least 6 feet.

I am an average 5-foot-6, and her maternal grandma is over 5-9. So, as you can see, she just had no chance at being anything but big and beautiful.

trician predicted she would be at least 6 feet when full-grown.

Actually, my husband and I are quite pleased because we know she has the potential to be an extraordinary athlete. We’re hoping she will enjoy and excel at volleyball and softball.

Who knows, however? Perhaps she will want to be in the drama club or something.

Either way, we just want her to be happy and will support her in her passions, and hope that her stature won’t hinder her from finding her place in this world.

Meanwhile, we’ll just have to tolerate the strange questions from family, friends and strangers, such as: “She’s only 2½? I thought she was 5,” or “What do you feed her?”

My daughter will continue to be off the charts in height and weight. I also suspect she will be off the charts in intelligence, humor, grace and love.

I couldn’t ask for a better daughter.

STORRS, Conn. – Carrying golf clubs, shovels and hockey sticks, several hundred University of Connecticut students gathered just before midnight in a cemetery, ready to do battle with menacing clowns they had heard might be lurking among the headstones.

Police determined that Monday’s clown rumors were a hoax. But dozens of similar reports have surfaced across

the country, largely on social media.

And authorities are being forced to take them seriously as a potential threat to public safety, particularly at schools, where principals have conducted lockdowns and canceled classes.

“There are many other emergencies and calls for service that troopers and other first responders need to get to without being misdirected to a prank,” Connecticut state troopers said in a statement.

NIU NAACP student advocacy group now up and running

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – When Amirius Clinton arrived on the Northern Illinois University campus in 2013 to start his freshman year, he said two things stood out for him: a sizable campus and city police presence, and the absence of an advocacy organization.

Coming from Chicago, a city he knew to have controversial police-community relations, Clinton said what he saw at NIU made him a bit uneasy. It became his call to action.

“When I got here, I felt like, as the African-American community, we didn’t have any security – that secure organization that’s going to make sure our rights would be uplifted and held to a standard,” said Clinton, who is now 21. “That was an issue for me.”

By the end of his freshman year, he was laying groundwork to reconstitute the student chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, a prominent and long-standing organization that has provided advocacy during some of the most tumultuous times in this nation’s history.

The organization has, in recent years, drawn criticism about whether it is relevant today.

In 2015, at the start of Clinton’s junior year, the NIU NAACP chapter received its official charter from the national one. Now, the student civil rights organization is up and running.

“The importance of a student NAACP chapter is to uphold the national standards of the NAACP,” said Clinton, who serves as president, “which is always securing and making sure people’s rights are being upheld.”

This isn’t the first student NAACP chapter on the NIU campus, although Clinton and others at the university are hard-pressed to recall what happened to the previous one.

But for the political science major, that’s all in the past, and he’s forging ahead with making this iteration of the organization one he hopes will be enduring.

While the chapter will be based on campus, Clinton said it also would be the only civil rights organization of its kind in the DeKalb area.

“That forces us to also deal with citywide issues,” Clinton said.

The diversity of not only the NIU student body but also other entities within DeKalb makes having a local civil rights advocacy organization significant, said community leaders such as the Rev. Joseph Mitchell, pastor of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church.

The majority of NIU’s more than 19,000 undergraduate students are white (57 percent), but racial minority groups (43 percent) continue to grow.

African-Americans comprise 16 percent of students, and Hispanics make up 15 percent. Forty-nine percent of students are women.

Similarly, most DeKalb residents are white (74 percent), according to the 2010 census. But the percentage of black (12 percent) and Hispanic (13 percent) residents continues to grow.

“For the young people to get involved with [NAACP], from a social justice standpoint and from a community standpoint, is big,” Mitchell said.

“The fact that they want to be part of the community at large, to make this community better, is nothing but good.”

NIU officials tout Clinton’s effort and the organization itself.

“The positive impact of having an NAACP chapter centers around allowing students to have an alternative means by which to express their commitment to social justice issues,” said Gina Flynn, director of the NIU Center for Black Studies.

She said some students could find reassurance with the 107-year-old national organization’s legacy of activism.

NIU’s student chapter is expected to be a voice for students and stand in the vanguard on social issues, campus and communitywide, Clinton said.

One of the current initiatives the organization is pushing is voter registration – with the Nov. 8 presidential election approaching.

Drives are planned to sign up students and area residents to vote, as well as push a get-out-the-vote message.

The NIU NAACP would partner with other student organizations that represent students of various faiths, ethnicities and backgrounds, Clinton said.

Testimony begins in shaken baby case

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A 23-year-old Northern Illinois University student told a jury Wednesday how she cleaned, lotioned, changed and dressed her 7½-week-old daughter for the final time in August 2013 after the girl was taken off life support at a Rockford hospital.

Shanae Scott was the first witness called by prosecutors in the murder trial of her daughter’s father, Keith L. Terrell, who is accused of shaking his daughter, causing the injuries that led to her death.

Terrell, 26, of the 700 block of North Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb, was charged with first-degree murder after his daughter, Kelis Terrell, died at a Rockford hospital. The offense typically is punishable with between 20 and 60 years in prison.

Terrell’s trial began Tuesday with jury selection. That process also took up much of the day Wednesday. Jurors were questioned individually rather than in groups because of the sensitive nature of the case. Several jurors were excused Wednesday after telling Judge Robbin Stuckert that they wouldn’t be able to serve fairly and impartially in a case involving the death of a child.

Wednesday actually was the third day of waiting to be selected for some of the jurors. Others had waited through the better part of two days before a

jury of nine women and three men was selected along with three alternates Wednesday afternoon. Once the jury had been picked, cheers from the jury room could be heard in the courtroom where Scott and five others sat in the gallery.

Prosecutors Stephanie Klein and David Weichel laid out their case in an opening statement given by Klein.

“You will hear how the defendant lied to the police. How he told them at first he claimed he had no idea how Kelis could have become injured. Then how he told a series of stories; a story of a series of reckless events such as Kelis falling off his lap and him dropping Kelis and him squeezing her and falling on top of her. You’ll get to hear those stories yourself, as much of the interview was both audio- and video-recorded,” Klein said. “What you will also hear on that recording is the defendant admitting those were all lies. That he made up those stories. You will also hear him admit, on the video, that what really happened was he shook Kelis.

That he gave her, quote, ‘like one good, two shakes.’ And with that, ladies and gentlemen, this defendant ended her life, and he’s guilty of murder.”

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Police are searching for a man they consider armed and dangerous in connection with a pair of armed robberies that occurred last month.

Robert Harrison, 26, is wanted on charges of home invasion and armed robbery, DeKalb police said in a news release. His bond has been set at $600,000. Harrison has been known to live in DeKalb and Chicago, police said.

On Tuesday, Tarvish Johnson, 26, of Chicago, was arrested in Chicago with help from the Chicago/Great Lakes Fugitive Apprehension Unit, the news re-

lease said.

On Sept. 7, police said Johnson and Harrison went to a home in the 700 block of Regent Drive in DeKalb, under the pretense of buying marijuana from a person who lived there. Once inside the home, the pair used a gun to rob the residents of cellphones and drugs, Tarvish police said.

Johnson On Sept. 20, police said, Johnson and Harrison attacked a man when he returned to his home in the 900 block of Fotis Drive. The thieves, who were armed with a gun, then tied

up the man and his roommate, put them in a closet, then stole money, cellphones, a TV and a laptop computer before making a getaway by stealing a car, police said.

The stolen car, a white 2011 Toyota Camry, later was found empty about a mile away in the 800 block of Hillcrest Drive, Robert according to the release.

Harrison Bob Redel said the victim of the armed robbery might have been targeted because of drug dealing, but police do not believe the home invasion was drug-related.

DeKalb police warn residents of potential ‘clowning’ threats DeKALB – Police are investigating reports of “clowning” in DeKalb and warning residents of the national trend in which people dress as clowns and try to scare people.

DeKalb School District 428 also cautioned parents of threatening messages being sent to students through social me-

dia from an unknown person identifying as a clown. The district sent a voice message to inform parents that the threats are a hoax and suggested they discourage their children from interacting with unknown people on social media.

Wearing a costume is not illegal; however, intentional acts that cause alarm may result in criminal charges, according to a news release from the DeKalb Police Department.

These incidents are deliberate acts to cause a disturbance in the community, as opposed to children dressing up in costumes for fun, according to the release.

Dozens of rumors about “creepy clowns” reported across the country have proved to be hoaxes – in some cases, with charges filed against children reporting them. But with reports of clown sightings spreading, fueled largely by social media, authorities are being forced to take them

seriously as a potential threat to public safety, particularly at schools, where principals have conducted lockdowns and canceled classes.

DeKalb police will have additional officers working on Halloween to ensure people are enjoying the holiday safely, according to the release. Police ask that suspicious activity involving “clowning” be reported to the department at 815-7488400 or 911 for emergencies.

Safe Passage to host panel discussion on sexual assault DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Safe Passage will host a screening this month of the Netflix documentary “Audrie & Daisy,” followed by a panel discussion about efforts to prevent sexual violence.

The screening and panel discussion will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 18 in the 4 Seasons Room at the Community Outreach Building, 2500 N. Annie Glidden Road, DeKalb.

The documentary focuses on two different girls who were sexually assaulted, and it “takes a hard look at the issues faced by America’s teenagers who are coming of age in the new world of social media bullying, spun wildly out of control,” according to Netflix.

After the documentary, there will be a panel discussion from local experts and administrators about efforts to prevent sexual violence and subsequent victimization via social media, the prevalence of reported sexual assault among teens in DeKalb County, and the effect of these individual and

collective abuses, Safe Passage Prevention Program Director Sarah Slavenas said.

The panel will include DeKalb County Regional Office of Education Superintendent Amanda Christensen.

The event is intended raise awareness about these issues and is aimed at parents, teens, school faculty and administrators.

“As the leaders in education and violence prevention for DeKalb County, the Regional Office of Education and Safe Passage feel it is our duty to become part of a national discussion that is undeniably affecting youth in our county,” Slavenas said.

Safe Passage is a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing and preventing domestic violence and sexual assault in DeKalb County. It provides services to victims of domestic and sexual violence such as crisis intervention and medical advocacy for victims of domestic and sexual violence, short- and long-term housing for victims and their children, community education and a batterer’s intervention program.

If the chair is unusable in its present condition, your friend should have a professional replace the leather. As long as a professional restoration is done using real leather, it will not lower the value of the chairs significantly. *** Q: I have a set of Krueger 404 folding chairs that I believe were manufactured in the early 1960s. They have the Krueger label on the bottom. They are metal with vinyl cushions on the seat and back. The seat folds down so they can be stacked. Can you give me any history on these chairs?

A: The company, originally called Krueger Metal Products, was founded by Al Krueger in Aurora, Illinois, in 1941. The company made folding chairs using scrap metal purchased from steel mills. Recycling and reusing is nothing new. Our ancestors had glass, metal and ceramic pieces that were imported, expensive and scarce. So when something broke, it was repaired or saved to be reused. A primitive hand mirror with recycled glass was sold at a Skinner auction in 2016. It was one of many wooden items in a large collection, and prices were high for the one-of-a-kind “makedos.” The mirror, one of nine early mirrors in the auction, had a narrow 12-inch piece of wood for a frame and handle. An irregular piece of a broken mirror less than 3 inches wide was set into the wood. It probably was used by the owner to see his or her face at a time when mirrors were not found in most houses. The end of the handle has a notch, which probably was used to wedge the mirror on a chair back or counter in an upright position. The 18th-century mirror, made in Massachusetts, sold for $1,700. *** Tip: American carousel figures are more heavily carved on the right side, because they went around counterclockwise. To the Electors of the State of Illinois: The Illinois Constitution establishes a structure for government and laws. There are three ways to initiate change to the Illinois Constitution: (1) a constitutional convention may propose changes to any part; (2) the General Assembly may propose changes to any part; or (3) a petition initiative may propose amendments limited to structural and procedural subjects contained in the Legislative Article. The people of Illinois must approve any changes to the Constitution before they become effective. The purpose of this document is to inform you of proposed changes to the Illinois Constitution and provide you with a brief explanation and a summary of the arguments in favor of and in opposition to the proposed amendment.

Proposed changes in the existing constitutional amendment are indicated by underscoring all new matter and by crossing with a line all matter which is to be deleted.

PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO ADD SECTION 11 TO ARTICLE IX OF THE ILLINOIS CONSTITUTION ARTICLE IX – REVENUE SECTION 11. TRANSPORTATION FUNDS (a) No moneys, including bond proceeds, derived from taxes, fees, excises, or license taxes relating to registration, title, or operation or use of vehicles, or related to the use of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, airports, or to fuels used for propelling vehicles, or derived from taxes, fees, excises, or license taxes relating to any other transportation infrastructure or transportation operation, shall be expended for purposes other than as provided in subsections (b) and (c). (b) Transportation funds may be expended for the following: the costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation, including statutory refunds and adjustments provided in those laws; payment of highway obligations; costs for construction, reconstruction, maintenance, repair, and betterment of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, airports, or other forms of transportation; and other statutory highway purposes. Transportation funds may also be expended for the State or local share of highway funds to match federal aid highway funds, and expenses of grade separation of highways and railroad crossings, including protection of at-grade highways and railroad crossings, and, with respect to local governments, other transportation purposes as authorized by law. (c) The costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation shall be limited to direct program expenses related to the following: the enforcement of traffic, railroad, and motor carrier laws; the safety of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, or airports; and the construction, reconstruction, improvement, repair, maintenance, operation, and administration of highways, under any related provisions of law or any purpose related or incident to, including grade separation of highways and railroad crossings. The limitations to the costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation under this subsection (c) shall also include direct program expenses related to workers’ compensation claims for death or injury of employees of the State’s transportation agency; the acquisition of land and the erection of buildings for highway purposes, including the acquisition of highway rights-of-way or for investigations to determine the reasonable anticipated future highway needs; and the making of surveys, plans, specifications, and estimates for the construction and maintenance of flight strips and highways. The expenses related to the construction and maintenance of flight strips and highways under this subsection (c) are for the purpose of providing access to military and naval reservations, defense-industries, defense-industry sites, and sources of raw materials, including the replacement of existing highways and highway connections shut off from general use at military and naval reservations, defense-industries, and defense-industry sites, or the purchase of rights-of-way. (d) None of the revenues described in subsection (a) of this Section shall, by transfer, offset, or otherwise, be diverted to any purpose other than those described in subsections (b) and (c) of this Section. (e) If the General Assembly appropriates funds for a mode of transportation not described in this Section, the General Assembly must provide for a dedicated source of funding. (f) Federal funds may be spent for any purposes authorized by federal law.

EXPLANATION The proposed amendment adds a new Section to the Revenue Article of the Illinois Constitution that provides revenue generated from transportation related taxes and fees (referred to as “transportation funds”) shall be used exclusively for transportation related purposes. Transportation related taxes and fees include motor fuel taxes, vehicle registration fees, and other taxes and user fees dedicated to public highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit (buses and rail), ports, or airports.

Under the proposed amendment, transportation funds may be used by the State or local governments only for the following purposes: (1) costs related to administering transportation and vehicle laws, including public safety purposes and the payment of obligations such as bonds; (2) the State or local share necessary to secure federal funds or for local government transportation purposes as authorized by law; (3) the construction, reconstruction, improvement, repair, maintenance, and operation of highways, mass transit, and railroad crossings; (4) expenses related to workers’ compensation claims for death or injury of transportation agency employees; and (5) to purchase land for building highways or buildings for to be used for highway purposes.

This new Section is a limitation on the power of the General Assembly or a unit of local government to use, divert, or transfer transportation funds for a purpose other than transportation. It does not, and is not intended to, impact or change the way in which the State and local governments use sales taxes, including the sales and excise tax on motor fuel, or alter home rule powers granted under this Constitution. It does not seek to change the way in which the State funds programs administered by the Illinois Secretary of State, Illinois Department of Transportation, and operations by the Illinois State Police directly dedicated to the safety of roads, or entities or programs funded by units of local government. Further, the Section does not impact the expenditure of federal funds, which may be spent for any purpose authorized by federal law.

During the jury selection process, in which the judge and both sides question prospective jurors, McCulloch asked one woman what she knew about false confessions and if she ever could imagine a scenario that would elicit a false confession. The woman was excused from the jury at the request of the defense.

After that, the judge told McCulloch that he couldn’t ask prospective jurors about false confessions. Prosecutors were allowed to continue asking prospective jurors if they had held a baby and when the last time they had done so. Prosecutors also asked prospective jurors about their knowledge of shaken baby syndrome.

The syndrome “destroys a child’s brain cells and prevents his or her brain from getting enough oxygen” and it “is a form of child abuse that can result in permanent brain damage or death,” according to the Mayo Clinic.

Terrell’s case will continue Thursday and could extend into next week.

CHICAGO – The Chicago City Council on Wednesday approved Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s plan to create a new agency to investigate police shootings and misconduct allegations, even as critics – some on the council – said it’s not strong enough to closely watch a police force long dogged by a reputation for brutality and covering up misdeeds of officers.

Over the objections of some aldermen and several people in the audience who angrily shouted their displeasure, the council voted, 39-8, to form a new agency to investigate the police force called the Civilian Office of Police Accountability and create a new deputy inspector whose job will be to monitor the department.

“Obviously, Chicago ain’t ready for reform,” said Alderwoman Leslie Hairston, who voted against the plan after complaining that it won’t have enough funding and independence from City Hall.

Same-day voter registration likely to go on, supporters say

CHICAGO – Same-day voter registration likely will be available at certain Illinois polling stations for the Nov. 8 election, election officials and civil rights groups said Wednesday in the wake of this week’s appeals court ruling, although Republican-affiliated groups remain hopeful they still can block the provision by then.

The stay by the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which occurred late Tuesday, temporarily cancels a lower-court ruling that halted poll-level registration for voters because of what the judge said was discrimination against rural GOP-leaning areas of the state. But the full appeal still is pending, so Republicans may have a victory before

Thomson prison expected to be fully operational in 2017

THOMSON – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said a western Illinois federal prison will be fully operational starting late next year.

Durbin visited Thomson Administrative U.S. Penitentiary on Tuesday. He said progress is being made on the facility, but that much work remains to be done.

As a federal maximum-security prison, Thomson is expected to house up to 2,800 federal inmates from around the country and create about 100 more jobs.

“I’m so happy to report that out of the 214 current employees at this facility, paid employees and salaried employees, with a payroll income of about $22 million a year, that over half of

The new agency will investigate shootings, incidents when officers used stun guns, allegations of physical and psychological coercion of witnesses by officers, as well as allegations that officers conducted improper searches or denied access to attorneys for people suspected of crimes. And the agency would have to complete its investigations within six months or offer an explanation to the mayor and others.

The agency can’t hire anyone who has been a Chicago police officer within the past five years as an investigator – an effort to satisfy reform advocates who worried that people who were recently on the force might not aggressively investigate officers.

Critics also singled out a part of the plan that calls for the new agency to hire attorneys from a list of at least five law firms previously approved by the city’s law department.

Hairston wondered how attorneys who owe their jobs to the law department could be trusted to do work that is not influenced by the law department.

Obama to raise cash in Chicago for Clinton, Duckworth

CHICAGO – President Barack Obama will be in Chicago this weekend to raise money for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign and Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth’s bid for U.S. Senate.

Obama will travel to his hometown Friday, when fundraisers are planned for Clinton and for Democrats in the U.S. House.

He’ll attend a campaign event Sunday for Duckworth, who is challenging Republican Sen. Mark Kirk.

The Senate race will help determine whether Democrats retake the majority in the Senate.

Northwestern U. chemistry professor wins Nobel Prize

EVANSTON – A professor at Northwestern University is one of three scientists honored with this year’s Nobel Prize for chemistry.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences early Tuesday said that Fraser Stoddart will share the $930,000 prize with Frenchman Jean-Pierre Sauvage and Dutch scientist Bernard “Ben” Feringa.

The award was given for the “design and synthesis of molecular machines.”

The 74-year-old professor teaches chemistry at the school.

His daughter said he’s “absolutely ecstatic” about the honor.

Northwestern President Morton Schapiro said it’s a “tremendous honor” for the school and Stoddart, whom he called a “pioneer.”

Stoddart is the second professor from Northwestern University’s chemistry department to win the Nobel Prize. The late John A. Pople received the award in 1998.

BOSTON – A former Marine sergeant who underwent a double arm transplant said Wednesday that the best part about having arms again is that he can hold his fiancee’s hand and pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a chef.

Retired Sgt. John Peck, who lost all four limbs as the result of an explosion of a homemade bomb in Afghanistan in May 2010, underwent 14 hours of surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in August. The procedure involved 60 doctors, nurses and other medical personnel.

His arms are scarred and move awkwardly, but every day with the new limbs is better, he said at a news conference at the hospital.

Officials: Police stabbing might be terror-related

BRUSSELS – A knife-wielding man stabbed two police officers in Brussels on Wednesday in an attack that might be terror-related, Belgian prosecutors said.

It was the latest attack on law enforcement officials in a nation that has been on high alert since 32 people were killed March 22 in suicide bombing attacks on the Brussels airport and subway.

Two officers in the Schaerbeek neighborhood were attacked at noon on the street by a man with a knife, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.

Another police patrol overpowered the man, who was shot in the leg before the suspect, identified as 43-year-old Belgian native Hicham D., was arrested.

State-run broadcaster RTBF said the assailant stabbed one officer in the neck, the other in the abdomen and broke the nose of the third officer, who shot him.

Prosecutor’s office spokesman Eric Van Der Sypt said the incident might be terror-related, but he declined to explain why.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Rescue workers in Haiti struggled to reach isolated towns on Haiti’s southern peninsula and learn the full extent of the death and destruction caused by Hurricane Matthew as the powerful storm lashed at the Bahamas on Wednesday and triggered large-scale evacuations along the U.S. East Coast.

At least 16 deaths were blamed on the hurricane during its weeklong march across the Caribbean, 10 of them in Haiti. Marie Alta Jean-Baptiste, head of Haiti’s civil protection agency, announced Wednesday that Haiti’s confirmed death toll had doubled from five to 10.

But with a key bridge washed out, roads impassable and phone communications down, the western tip of Haiti has been largely cut off a day after Matthew made landfall, and there was no full accounting of the dead and injured in its wake.

But Jean-Baptiste indicated that her agency was starting to get a better handle about what happened in hard-hit Grande Anse department on Haiti’s southern peninsula and expected to soon release more information about what rescuers were finding.

After moving past Haiti, Matthew rolled across a corner of Cuba and began pounding the southern Bahamas with heavy wind and rain.

Weakening a bit, it had maximum sustained

winds of 115 mph by Wednesday night as it spun on a course expected to take it near the capital city of Nassau during the night. It was expected to regain strength overnight.

Forecasters said the storm could hit Florida – or come dangerously close – Thursday evening and then sideswipe the East Coast all the way up to the Carolinas over the weekend. Matthew could become the first major hurricane to blow ashore in the U.S. since Wilma slashed across Florida in 2005, killing five people.

Nearly 2 million people along the lower East Coast were urged to evacuate their homes.

“If you’re able to go early, leave now,” Florida Gov. Rick Scott warned.

On Tuesday, Matthew swept across a remote area of Haiti with 145 mph winds, wrecking homes and swamping roads. But government leaders in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere said they weren’t close to fully gauging the effect in the flood-prone nation where less powerful storms have killed thousands.

“What we know is that many, many houses have been damaged. Some lost rooftops and they’ll have to be replaced, while others were totally destroyed,” Interior Minister Francois Anick Joseph said.

Late Wednesday afternoon, the U.S. military announced that a small advance team would start preparing for the arrival of roughly 100 military personnel and nine helicopters currently in the Cayman Islands.

Defending the indefensible

Tuesday night’s vice presidential debate was more of a proxy war between this year’s presidential candidates than a contest about capabilities of the two men on stage.

In that sense, it was an unfair fight: Gov. Mike Pence, R-Indiana, had to defend the indefensible Donald Trump.

To a large extent, he did so by conjuring a candidate who does not exist – a Reaganesque supporter of a muscular foreign policy, small government and traditional Christian values. It was as if he was defending the running mate he wishes he had.

To the extent that Pence succeeded Tuesday evening, it was in landing blows on Hillary Clinton while declining to defend Trump’s proposals and record. When Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Virginia, listed a variety of Trump’s offenses – from stoking the racist “birther” movement to attacking Sen. John McCain’s war record to calling women disgusting names – Pence responded by claiming Clinton and Kaine have run an insult-rich campaign.

Similarly, when challenged to defend Trump’s plans for the budget and entitlement programs, Pence insisted the Democrats would create “a mountain range of debt,” although Trump’s tax-cutting plan would, in fact, balloon the debt much more. Pence played down Trump’s promises to deport millions of undocumented immigrants and his well-documented skepticism of NATO. He frequently insisted that Trump would be “strong” where President Barack Obama and Clinton are “weak,” attacking them for “Russian aggression” under their watch, but he dodged when Kaine pointed out that Trump has cozied up to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.

Pence’s all-purpose defense of Trump was that “Donald Trump is a businessman, not a career politician.”

He deployed this line when attempting to explain why Trump has failed to release his tax returns. But the fact that Trump lacks a public record to scrutinize makes it only more important that he release his tax returns, so the public can see how he conducted the professional life on which he bases his campaign.

This is not to say Kaine shined. His frequent interruptions made his points about Trump, which were mostly reasonable, seem less so. Pence effectively bore in on areas of the world that have become less stable during the past eight years. Both candidates, meanwhile, failed to respond to a range of substantive questions from moderator Elaine Quijano. Neither ticket, for example, has a plan to take on the nation’s long-term budget imbalances.

Both candidates said that, unlike Obama, they favor creating a safe zone in Syria, but, when pressed, neither explained how or by whom that zone would be protected.

A break from the dodging and insulting came when they thoughtfully debated abortion, with both men fervently defending their very different points of view.

Repeatedly over the course of Tuesday’s debate, Kaine exclaimed that he could not believe Pence could defend Trump’s behavior and record. In a way, Kaine was right – a polished Pence largely did not.

“I guess I’m having an Aleppo moment,” he said.

There’s a lot of that going around. And it raises a question: Since when is knowing things no longer a prerequisite to running for president?

I freely admit that, if challenged to name the head of state in, say, Burkina Faso, I’d have to look it up.

But then, I am not running for president. I am not putting myself before my fellow citizens asking that they trust me to steer the ship of state through choppy waters of budget challenges, national security and international diplomacy.

In that context, it’s hard to overstate the gall of a Gary Johnson. But the fact that such uninformed – even broadly ignorant – people capture attention and votes and that one of them may even be our next president also offers a vivid illustration of the unserious nation we have become.

One often hears it said that people want a president they can relate to, one they could imagine having a beer with. Which is not unimportant. But isn’t it more important that the president be someone who has pondered the world and America’s place in it? Is it too much to ask that whoever occupies that office be someone who is comfortable with ideas, and who knows actual, fact-based stuff?

Competence is not sexy. Just ask Jeb Bush. But when the waste matter hits the ventilation device, there is no substitute. We should respect that fact more than we do. Besides, there are plenty of people to drink beer with.

Obama’s self-serving fictions exposed Barack Obama is at it again, portraying the partisan battles of his presidency as entirely the result of pigheaded obstructionism by the Republicans – and twisting the truth to propel the narrative.

In an interview with New York magazine, Obama has returned to one of his favorite stories about the start of his first term. As he tells it, he had expected congressional Republicans to work with him on a stimulus bill.

On his way to talk to them, he was startled to find that John Boehner, then the leader of the House Republicans, had put out a news release opposing the bill. This is when Obama realized, he said, that Republicans were going to oppose him on whatever he did.

Obama has presented different versions of this story.

In this latest one, he was (weirdly) not planning to talk about the stimulus when he addressed House Republicans; in an earlier account he gave to Time, he was.

Either way, his story is misleading.

In the days before then, John Boehner had said “we want to work with the new president,” but Republicans had serious concerns about the stimulus bill the congressional Democrats were advancing. Democrats in the House, he said, had turned Obama’s vision of bipartisan cooperation “upside down.”

On “Meet the Press” two days before the meeting, Boehner predicted that many Republicans would vote no.

News accounts at the time noted Republicans’ complaints that congressional Democrats had “shut them out of the process.”

On Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, House Democrats introduced a stimulus

bill without any Republican input.

The next day, Obama and congressional Republicans met, and reporters said Obama had signaled his openness to revising the bill.

Boehner remained opposed to the unrevised bill, however, and the day after that, all House Republicans voted against it.

After the vote, Boehner reiterated that he was open to working together: “House Republicans want to work with congressional Democrats on legislation that fulfills the goal set by President Obama: crafting a bipartisan plan focused on job creation.

“Unfortunately, the trillion-dollar government spending bill before the House today was not that plan, and a bipartisan coalition of Members rightfully rejected it.

“It is time for Capitol Hill Democrats to finally work with Republicans on a job creation package.”

Obama’s story is triply wrong.

Boehner didn’t sucker-punch Obama while he was coming to talk;

Boehner’s position had been made clear already.

He didn’t come out against a stimulus. And the bill the Republicans rejected reflected no serious effort to court them.

Republicans haven’t covered themselves in glory during the Obama years, and the president took some fair shots at them in his New York interview. They have been too slow to come up with their own health care plan.

Some Republicans have attacked his foreign policy from every direction serially.

But they also had reasons to doubt they could deal with Obama in good faith, and they must find those doubts confirmed when they listen to his self-serving fictions.

Colombians need another way forward through this mess Some are comparing the surprising rejection by Colombians of a peace accord with the FARC (the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) guerrilla movement as another Brexit-like rebellion.

There are certainly resemblances: The accord was pushed by a liberal-minded elite that saw it as a means to put their country’s violent past behind it, open rural areas to development and attract more trade and foreign investment.

They had the endorsement of a global cast ranging from President Barack Obama to Raúl Castro and Pope Francis.

Pollsters who predicted an easy win for the yes vote, however, were blindsided.

The causes of the referendum’s failure, however, probably had less to do with resistance to Colombia’s modernization and globalization than with its success.

The severe threat the insurgency once posed to the country receded years ago, in large part because of an intensive U.S.-backed buildup and professionalization of Colombia’s armed forces.

A large majority of those living in areas where the war with the FARC continues supported the accord, but residents of big cities other than the capital, Bogota, rejected it.

More than 60 percent of voters failed to turn out.

In short, a lot of Colombians appeared to calculate that there would be little consequence for rejecting the relatively generous concessions to FARC leaders negotiated

by President Juan Manuel Santos.

Ordinary citizens far from the jungles where the FARC had its bases and cocaine-trafficking operations felt safe in rejecting the billions of dollars for land reform and subsi-

dies to ex-fighters, reserved seats in Congress for a Marxist-Leninist party with scant popular support, and light consequences for FARC leaders who confessed to war crimes.

Opposition was validated by the popular president who preceded Santos, Álvaro Uribe, who led the military offensive against the group as well as the no vote campaign.

In the immediate aftermath of the referendum, the naysayers’ logic seemed vindicated. Both the government and the FARC immediately announced that a cease-fire would remain in place, and talks reopened.

FARC leader Rodrigo Londoño said it would “use only words as a weapon to build toward the future” – and militant leaders who favor renewed warfare may find few fighters to follow them.

The problem is that Colombia’s sprawling countryside, with its concentrated landownership and lack of

infrastructure for crops other than coca, needs the reforms that were built into the peace deal.

Without them, violent drug-trafficking gangs and other criminals will continue to dominate the landscape and terrorize the population, whether or not they call themselves revolutionaries.

At best, the pact might be revised to provide for tougher treatment of FARC leaders guilty of crimes, while continuing to pardon rankand-file fighters.

But Londoño and his clique stoutly resisted such accountability through years of negotiations.

Santos also could try to push the accord or a slightly amended version through Congress in spite of the referendum, which was nonbinding.

Better, however, to accept democracy’s verdict and look for another way forward.

Radtke didn’t begin playing volleyball until her sophomore year at Lincolnshire Stevenson. Admitting that she didn’t start to get a firm grasp of the mental side of the game until the middle of her time at NIU, she said she got by on athleticism her freshman year.

She still made the MAC all-freshman team in 2013.

“As a freshman, Ray used to say just go out and play,” she said. “It’s hard for you already because everything’s going so fast, but just go out there and do what you can.”

Jori, plans to play at NIU next year, joking that her family is “Northern for life.”

Now, in the middle of her final season with the Huskies, Jenna Radtke is a major reason why the Huskies are riding a seven-match winning streak.

The Huskies have a critical weekend coming up, hosting Ball State (7-11, 3-1 in MAC West) and Toledo (10-6, 3-1 in MAC West) in a pair of matches that could determine playoff seeding.

The Cardinals opened the season losing their first nine games, but have won seven out of nine heading into their match against the Huskies at 7 p.m. Friday at Victor E. Court.

“Huge, huge,” Gooden said. “Toledo is playing the volleyball we knew they were capable of playing. They’re doing a good job. Ball State is Ball State.

They had a slow start – they were just figuring it out. They have a bunch of young kids, brand new coach – there’s a bunch of pieces, and you use the preseason to work them out.”

DeKalb’s Carpenter on to sectional

sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – DeKalb sophomore Emma Carpenter’s 2-over-par 72 was good enough for third place at the girls Class 2A Burlington Central Regional meet on Wednesday.

Although she shot a 5-over 41 on the front nine, much of that was the result of a triple bogey. Carpenter was able to clean up on the back nine, shooting a 3-under 31. Carpenter attributes her 10-stroke difference to improved ball striking, especially around the green.

“I fired at the pin well on the back nine,” Carpenter said. “I felt like I was always putting for birdie from 10 feet and closer on the back nine. I need to stay a little bit more focused at the start of the round. I think I really kicked it into full gear around the 10th hole. I was a little nervous today, and I’m sure I’ll be nervous in sectionals and if I make it to state. I need to channel that nervous energy and let it drive me, instead of being scared of the moment.”

The Barbs boys team also qualified for the next round of the postseason, winning the Class 3A Rockford Guilford Regional. DeKalb coach John Cordes coaches both the boys and Carpenter, because DeKalb does not have a girls team. Cordes said that Carpenter will

“I think she knew that a 41 would get the job done,” Cordes said. “I think she hit a couple good shots, got her confidence up and putted really well on the back nine. On the front nine, she was

hitting her irons a bit thin. On No. 10, her first iron shot on the back nine was 3 feet from the hole, and I think from then on in, she was zoned in.”

Carpenter will compete Monday in the Class 2A Schaumburg Sectional at Schaumburg Golf Club. The tee time has yet to been determined.

Now there’s a sentence most people wouldn’t have thought would exist last season. The Falcons are just not a good football team this year.

Is Heyward ready for October?

The story in the Heyward family is that Jason’s dad, Eugene, was inspired by a character in an epic film, a character of great strength.

Jason can’t remember what movie it was, but that’s where he got his curious middle name: Alias.

It’s pronounced “Elias,” which also was how the character’s name was spelled, said the Cubs’ right fielder.

“But my dad wanted my initials to be JAH for Jehova,” Heyward said.

If Jason Alias Heyward ever had a baseball season that lived up to that name, a season that ever begged for strength from the heavens – or an alias – it was this first season in Chicago.

The most coveted position player in last year’s free agent market signed an eight-year, $184 million deal, went 1 for 5 in the season opener and four days later reached his high-water average for the season at .250. He finished with career lows in home runs (seven), on-base percentage (.306) and slugging (.325).

“You want to come through so many times; you want to come through too much, every time,” Heyward said of the pressure he put on himself after idealizing the career destination he was able to choose for the first time in his career.

“Too in love with the city and the team and all those things, too happy to be in the most ideal situation,” he said. “Forget the contract; you’re just trying too hard because of all those things.

“You can love things too much sometimes,” he said.

But as the Cubs open the playoffs Friday night against the Giants, two important developments during Heyward’s rough season point to him as a player to watch in the Cubs’ efforts to complete their 108-year odyssey.

First, he remains the best right fielder in the game by several defensive metrics, a game-changing force in the field that never wavered through his hitting struggles.

“Listen, he’s been a big part of what we’ve done,” general manager Jed Hoyer said. “Our run prevention is why we had the run differential and the wins we did.

And he’s a huge part of that run prevention.”

The Cubs’ MLB-leading run differential of plus-252 was a whopping 37 percent better than the No. 2 Red Sox (plus-184).

Heyward has 18 defensive runs saved for a team that led the majors with 82, according to fangraphs.com.

And this: The final two weeks of the season, Heyward went 14-for-46 (.304) with nine walks (.410 on-base percentage), six extra-base hits and an .889 OPS.

NEW YORK – Nobody takes to October like Madison Bumgarner and the San Francisco Giants.

Bumgarner pitched a four-hitter for his latest postseason gem, outlasting Noah Syndergaard in a classic duel between aces, and injury substitute Conor Gillaspie hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning that sent San Francisco to a 3-0 victory over the New York Mets in the NL wild-card game Wednesday night.

Gillaspie connected off All-Star closer Jeurys Familia, who led the majors this year with a club-record 51 saves while allowing only one home run.

With their ninth consecutive victory when facing postseason elimination, manager Bruce Bochy and the Giants advanced to face the NL Central champion Cubs in a best-of-five Division Series.

Game 1 is Friday night at venerable Wrigley Field.

The good news for the Cubs as they attempt to end a championship drought that dates to 1908 is that Bumgarner probably won’t start until Game 3 – and would only be available once on full rest.

The big left-hander has been untouchable under pressure.

The last time Bumgarner was on the mound in the postseason, he saved Game 7 of the 2014 World Series in Kansas City with five scoreless innings on two days’ rest.

The change that led to that production started nearly two weeks before that, he said, when the Giants played a four-game series at Wrigley, all one-run games, and when all the idealizing and self-awareness disappeared into the playoff-like din of each of those games.

“It’s just go play and do what I need to do to go win. That’s what it’s been,” he said, “and that’s helped me so much here in this past month. That’s what it’s about.

That’s what I do.”

If it carries into the next few weeks, he could be a decisive factor in the postseason. Last year against the Cubs, he was the toughest out in the Cardinals lineup during the National League Division Series.

It reminds Hoyer of J.D. Drew, who struggled for the Red Sox all of 2007, then hit a first-inning grand slam that set the tone for a series-changing Game 6 win in the ALCS on the way to a championship.

“It was like all of a sudden everything that happened to that point was behind him,” Hoyer said. “And he had one of the biggest swings of that entire World Series run. It’s a new season, and I think there’s a chance [Heyward] gets some huge hits for us.”

Often lost in Heyward’s struggles at the plate this season were the things he did everywhere else during the game, from the Gold Glove fielding to aggressive, alert base running that set an early-season tone for the team, to behind-the-scenes moments with younger teammates.

“There’s a lot of things this guy does every day to help you win a ballgame,” manager Joe Maddon said.

Teammate Kris Bryant, an MVP candidate in his second season, brought up Heyward unsolicited one night when somebody was asking about Bryant’s and Anthony Rizzo’s influence on each other.

“It’s not just us,” Bryant said. “Jason Heyward comes to mind. Any time you’re struggling or frustrated, he knows what to say, he knows what to do to get you out of that and get you thinking in the right mindset.”

It’s no coincidence the Cardinals offered to make him the highest paid player in franchise history with a 10-year, $200 million offer to stay last winter.

“He’s just kind of an old-school, just comes-to-play-every day kind of player,” Cards manager Mike Matheny said. “You know what you’re going to get from the defensive side. He’s a plus-plus defender.

Offensively he had a good year for us. He was a threat on the bases – smart base runner.

“He was everything we could have asked.”

What Matheny seemed to like most were the “intangibles.”

“That old-school thinking of how the game should look and how the clubhouse should operate,” said Matheny, who was so impressed with the then-25-year-old Heyward that he brought him into closed conversations with veteran players during key points in the season.

“He always had good ideas, and you could tell he was thinking about this club and not just about himself,” Matheny said.

Heyward is old school right down to his dismissiveness of the analytics that ironically help make him a $184 million player – the metrics that quantify the base running and defensive details that he considers more a matter of knowing the game, paying attention and using your head.

“None of those things are me,” he said of sabermetrics. “I remember when WAR came out for the first time, and I think mine was 6-point something, and people were saying, ‘How does he have the high-

est WAR? I’m not buying it.’

“I’m like, ‘You came up with it. Why are you talking down on me like I came up with it? I didn’t ask for it. You made it for yourself.’ That’s what’s so funny about that.”

As Heyward remembers that story and laughs, it becomes even more apparent how much different he seems in September and October than in April and May. “I was in another new place for the third year in a row,” said Heyward, who was traded from Atlanta to St. Louis before last year, “but this one being the one that I chose and that I couldn’t wait to get to and I’m so excited about.

“And I still feel that way. That feeling hasn’t gone way. Yeah, that’s what’s made it harder than it had to be.”

And it required more strength to get through than any season before.

“I’ve always been strong,” he said.

“I’ve always been a mentally tough guy.”

How strong?

It’s his middle name.

BRIEFS Accuser weeps, defense says rape case ‘sad effort’ for money

LOS ANGELES – Lawyers for NBA star Derrick Rose and two friends accused of raping an incapacitated woman doubled down Wednesday on their assertions that the accuser willingly had sex with the trio, saying she performed sex acts on the men earlier that night at Rose’s mansion in Beverly Hills.

In sharp contrast to the opening statement in the civil case from the woman’s lawyer who called the incident a “classic gang rape,” the defense described an August 2013 scene for jurors in Los Angeles federal court that sounded like a porn movie.

They said the woman gave lap dances earlier under a sky full of stars by the side of Rose’s pool overlooking city lights, performed oral sex on Rose and had sex with his two friends before inviting them back to her apartment.

“There was no gang rape,” attorney Mike Monico said. “There was no rape at all.”

The woman’s lawyer said the story about her having sex earlier in the night

was falsely concocted to try to show she was insatiable and wanted to have sex with the men later that night. He said the three got into her apartment in the early morning hours after she passed out from drinking and raped her while she faded in and out of consciousness.

“The plaintiff will tell you all three men were in the bedroom at the same time,” attorney Waukeen McCoy said. “Each of them took turns raping her, they don’t even know who went first.”

MLB wants cans banned at Rogers Centre, fan prosecuted

TORONTO – Major League Baseball has spoken with the Toronto Blue Jays about banning cans from the seats at Rogers Centre and wants officials in Canada to prosecute the fan who threw a beer at Baltimore outfielder Hyun Soo Kim during the seventh inning of the AL wild-card game.

Toronto Police on Wednesday released a photo of the fan suspected of throwing the can, and the photo was shared by thousands on social media.

White on IR with fractured fibula

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com Bears receiver Kevin White suffered a severe high ankle sprain that resulted in a fractured fibula, general manager Ryan Pace said Wednesday.

White has been place on injured reserve.

The team is seeking more opinions on what’s next and it’s possible White could return later in the season. The Bears can bring one player back from IR as long as that player has been on the reserve list for eight weeks – cornerback Kyle Fuller is also on IR. The injury occurred during Sunday’s win over the Lions to White’s left leg – last year, he missed his rookie season with a stress fracture in his left leg, but Pace said the injuries are not related.

“This is a completely different injury. It’s a completely different bone in the lower leg,” coach John Fox said.

“This was the fibula, it’s the nonweight bearing bone, but he does have a spiral fracture. We’re looking at the different types of treatment, how to do it. Whether it’s surgery or not getting opinions.

Fox said White had his best game Sunday, showing strength and confidence with his six catches for 55 yards on nine targets. On the season, the Bears’ 2015 No. 7 pick had 19 receptions for 187 yards. In two NFL seasons, though, White has appeared in four games. Fox referenced a receiver he

“I go back to even my experience in Denver with Demaryius Thomas,” Fox said. “He probably didn’t do a whole lot until Year 3. So he had setbacks and he was injured coming out of college. He had an Achilles injury after that and a finger injury after that and he had two surgeries in his first year and a half

of NFL football. He’s turned out pretty good.”

Cameron Meredith will step into White’s spot on the outside. The Illinois State and St. Joseph’s High School product has six catches for 52 yards this season.

“He’s tall. He’s long. He’s got good catch radius. He does have good speed,” Fox said of Meredith. “I think you see his arm length. I think he went up and snatched one over the middle yesterday. He’s got good hands. So he’s a young guy that’s going to get better.”

Meredith, a second-year pro, got some work last season, appearing in 11 games and catching 11 passes for 120 yards.

“It’s an unfortunate situation for a good teammate,” Meredith said. “He’s going to go through the process and, hopefully, he’s back out here as soon as possible, but right now I’ve got to step up and be ready.”

The Bears also have veteran receivers Josh Bellamy and Deonte Thompson. Marquess Wilson, who is on the physically-unable-to-perform list with a foot injury, is eligible to return to practice Oct. 14.

It is, however, a significant setback for the Bears’ rebuilding program with Ryan Pace’s and Fox’s first draft choice, the seventh overall player who was targeted to be a centerpiece of the new offense, now missing most of his first two seasons.

It is doubly disappointing with the way White was starting to come on after a noticeably slow start in training camp.

Fox thought White was playing his best football when the injury occurred.

“I think last week was by far his best game,” Fox said. “He’s improved every week. I think we have mentioned that along the way. It’s disappointing for him and for us, but mostly for him. Just from the standpoint of having watched him grow and having experienced some success last week against Detroit.”

While White’s numbers weren’t eye-popping, he has played a significant role in the Bears’ back-to-back 300-yard passing games, and that threat clearly forced the Lions to respect the passing attack and leave some open lanes for rookie Jordan Howard’s big rushing day in his first start.

As opponents now consider putting an eighth and perhaps even ninth man in the box to limit Howard, the absence of White could encourage that decision and crimp the development of a second very promising youngster.

Finally, there is White, seemingly a very solid young man who deserves better.

They say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, and for the moment, and the immediate future, it appears that is about all White and the Bears can hope for.

LAKE FOREST – When it comes to Bears second-year receiver Kevin White, it seems were it not for bad luck, he and his team would have no luck at all.

With a less than five minutes remaining in the third quarter of Sunday’s 17-14 Bears’ victory over the Detroit Lions, Brian Hoyer hit White with a quick 5-yard toss to the Detroit 7-yard line, and White went down in a heap under Lions safety Glover Quin with his left leg twisted dangerously underneath him.

It was clear after White made his way to the bench, where he was met by the Bears medical staff, he was demonstrably upset and perhaps even angry.

You had to guess the news wouldn’t be great, but few were prepared for the bombshell the Bears dropped Wednesday morning.

White suffered a high ankle sprain on his left leg that resulted in a spiral fracture of the fibula, and he has been placed on the injured reserve list.

The Bears are not ruling out his return later this season, but the earliest he’d be eligible to return would be Nov. 20 against the Giants, and it sounds extremely unlikely this injury could heal that quickly.

As of Wednesday, the Bears and White still were mulling whether to have surgery or to allow the injury to heal on its own is the best course of action. There is a real possibility White is done for the year.

The answers to the first two questions on Bears fans’ minds are: Yes, the left leg he injured Sunday is the same leg in which a stress fracture in the tibia caused him to miss his rookie campaign; and no, there is absolutely no connection between the two injuries.

According to coach John Fox, “This injury is not nearly as serious as the last one.

“This is a completely different injury. It’s a completely different bone in the lower leg. This was the fibula; it’s the non-weight bearing bone. But he does have a spiral fracture.”

Portis searches for minutes

The days of Bobby Portis telling the media that he just “has to be Bobby Portis’’ have seemingly been left behind in a rookie season filled with inconsistency.

What is alive and well for the forward/center, however, is his motor.

Still full throttle down, still no shortage of running out.

That’s why the Bulls made Portis the 22nd overall pick in last year’s draft.

That’s also why coach Fred Hoiberg played Portis in 62 games last season, starting him in four.

But now there has to be more. There better be more.

“We’ve talked about his learning curve, just how steep it was in the last season,’’ Hoiberg said on Wednesday of Portis. “He’s a guy that works, he’s going to continue to get better. He loves watching film. You know, you keep using the word consistency, but that’s what we’re looking for.’’

And it starts with shot selection from the 6-foot-11 21-year-old. Besides being a high-energy reserve, the other strength Portis displayed in his rookie campaign

was a lack of shyness.

Often, when the basketball was in his hands, it was being launched toward the rim. The problem was it happened too often. Shot selection had to improve.

“For sure,’’ Portis said of being better in that department. “I’ve been trying to get into a lot of two-man situations with me and Doug [McDermott] on the same side. I feel like me and Doug work together real well. That’s something we did a lot last year, did this year. I’m looking forward to doing it a lot more.

I’ve learned that playing with a guy like Doug, Jimmy [Butler], they could backcut, and I can make some passes on the back door also. Scoring isn’t one thing I want to rely on.’’

It wasn’t last year.

Besides averaging a respectable 7.0 points per game, Portis also grabbed 5.4 rebounds and registered 0.4 blocks per game.

The big question surrounding Portis in Season 2, however, is where will he get the minutes?

Hoiberg has thrown Portis’ name out there as a starting candidate for the No. 4 spot, but he’s also battling against Taj Gibson and Nikola Mirotic.

Realistically, Portis is last in that competition.

The Interactive Beatles Experience headed to DeKalb DAILY CHRONICLE An innovative and unique show highlighting the works of The Beatles is coming to the Egyptian Theatre in DeKalb. Yesterday and Today: The Interactive Beatles Experience can be seen at 8 p.m. Oct. 14.

The group is anchored by brothers Billy, Ryan and Matthew McGuigan and does away with the worn-out “tribute” format of bad wigs and fake accents.

Instead, they perform as themselves and leave the song choices completely in the hands of the audience.

This is done through request cards that audience members fill out prior to the show. On those cards, the audience only needs to fill out three things: their name, their favorite Beatles song and the reason why they chose that song. The cards are collected and two minutes before the show begins, a set list is created based upon the songs chosen by the audience. As an added treat, the reasons that the audience members chose those songs make up the narrative of the evening.

Billy, Ryan and Matthew McGuigan, originally from Largo, Florida, were just 21, 18, and 15 years old in 1996 when their father, William McGuigan, died after a battle with leukemia.

DAILY CHRONICLE The public is invited to join the Regional History Center for an open house from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in celebration of American Archives Month, the opening of the activism exhibit “Sometimes We Must Interfere: Activism in Northern Illinois,” as well as the center’s inaugural year of participation in Chicago Open Archives.

The exhibit focuses on how and why people in northern Illinois

have promoted change, showcasing collection materials that promote discussions and actions of change such as strikes, labor issues, boycotts, demonstrations and voting behaviors. The exhibit will be on display throughout October in the foyer of Founders Memorial Library. Be sure to also check out the showcase of radical pamphlets and other media outside of Rare Books and Special Collections (fourth floor, outside of room 403) who have partnered with the RHC this year

in their celebrations.

During the open house, guests are welcome to view the main exhibit in the foyer of Founders Memorial Library and then continue upstairs to the RHC for a display in room 400.

As part of Chicago Open Archives 2016, the RHC also will provide behind-the-scenes tours with show-andtell from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

BRIEFS CCT to present ‘Godspell’; auditions Oct. 16-17

Children’s Community Theatre will host auditions Oct. 16 and 17 for its upcoming production of “Godspell.”

Based upon the Gospel according to Matthew, the show features a small group of people who help Jesus Christ tell different parables by using games, storytelling techniques and hefty doses of comedy.

The score features an eclectic blend of songs, ranging in style from pop to vaudeville, including the hit “Day by Day,” as well as “Learn Your Lessons Well” and “All for the Best.”

The show focuses on Christ’s message of kindness, tolerance and love.

Auditions will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Oct. 16 and 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 17 at the First United Methodist Church, 321 Oak St. in DeKalb.

To audition for this show, potential cast members must be age 16 or older.

The show will be performed Jan. 5 to 8 in the Carl Sandburg Auditorium, in the Holmes Student Center at Northern Illinois University.

DeKalb Public Library hosts Latin Dance Competition

The DeKalb Public Library and the Northern Illinois University Latino Resource Center are partnering to host a Latin Dance Competition during Hispanic Heritage Month at 3 p.m. Oct. 14.

Partners can sign up for a one-minute presentation of a merengue, salsa or bachata dance routine. Two finalists from each category will be chosen to move on to the finals where finalists will be asked to perform another one-minute dance routine of any category.

First-, second- and third-place winners will be announced. Firstplace winners will receive a $100 VISA gift card, second- and thirdplace winners will receive library and NIU gift baskets.

This event is free and open to the public.

KC hosts free Celebration of Dance performance Oct. 13 DAILY CHRONICLE Kishwaukee College once again is hosting A Celebration of Dance, a free evening of Hispanic dance performances by three local dance troupes.

A Celebration of Dance will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 13 in A1273 in the Kishwaukee College Conference Center. The event is free and open to the public.

The participating dance troupes include Ballet Nueva Imagen, Rayitos del Sol and Ballet Folklórico Xochiquetzal.

The dance troupes will perform traditional folklore dances from various regions of Mexico. Folklore dance is a unique and colorful celebration of culture and ethnic traditions that reflect a rich and varied regional history.

Ballet Nueva Imagen performs dances based on classic songs from the states of Jalisco, Sinaloa, Veracruz and Michoacan, and also fuses traditional choreography with more contemporary music.

Rayitos del Sol performs traditional dances that represent the states of Jalisco, Veracruz and Sinaloa. The Rayitos del Sol are young people between kindergarten through 12th grade from DeKalb, Sycamore and Genoa.

People become less withdrawn, but they often develop behavior and emotional problems, including delusions and hallucinations. Sleep disturbances and wandering also are common.

By this stage, the person likely will require help to bathe, toilet, dress and eat.

• Stage 5. This stage has been called “the long goodbye.” There seems to be very little left of the person’s “self.” Motor skills decline until the person no longer can walk, sit up, chew and swallow food, or control bladder and bowel movements. As the brain shuts down, the person becomes unresponsive, lapses into a coma and finally dies.

I am sorry to paint such a bleak picture, but unfortunately today we have no way of preventing or treating this terrible disease. However, there is reason to hope the picture will become brighter in the future.

In the past 20 years, scientists have begun to unravel what goes wrong with the chemistry of the brain in Alzheimer’s. I am cautiously optimistic this knowledge will lead to true breakthroughs.

But like the pace of the disease itself, the pace of our growing knowledge is hard to predict. It may take decades, but I think medical research will make major advances.

I know that gives little comfort to people who must deal with this terrible illness today.

Dear Reader: It’s impossible to predict exactly how Alzheimer’s disease will affect someone. Symptoms of the disease, and how quickly they progress, can vary widely from person to person. In some people, for reasons we don’t understand, the disease progresses very slowly.

However rapidly Alzheimer’s disease progresses, it generally unfolds in five stages: • Stage 1. Memory problems begin. The person may misplace valuable objects. Their performance at work or in social situations begins to suffer. They may have more trouble expressing their thoughts.

Personality changes also begin. A person may become withdrawn, apathetic, moody, depressed, irritable or anxious.

• Stage 2. Memory problems are more obvious. It may be difficult for someone with Alzheimer’s to follow conversations. The person may have difficulty recalling current events or even information from their own life. Depression often becomes prominent.

Reasoning and judgment skills are impaired.

• Stage 3. Memory can fluctuate daily or even hourly. People sometimes forget major events in their lives. Often they are unaware of the date or the time of year. Their conversations may become disjointed and veer off track.

You may see episodes of paranoia or anger. Stressful situations can trigger shouting, cursing or hitting.

At this stage, people with Alzheimer’s still can manage many basic activities of daily living. But they no longer can live independently.

• Stage 4. In this stage, you’ll see dramatic changes. Language skills drop sharply.

I see several possible solutions: First, tell your husband the truth. The second would be to have the tattoo removed. The third would be to add your married initial to the ones already on your ankle, at which point they will be your initials and yours alone – unless you’re still using your maiden name.

North’s two-no-trump response was the Jacoby Forcing Raise, guaranteeing at least four-card support and game-going values. South’s threeno-trump rebid indicated a middling hand (usually 14-16 points) with no side-suit singleton or void. Four clubs and four diamonds were control-bids showing those aces.

The North-South hands have mirror distribution: Each is 5-2-4-2.

This is usually bad news because it means there will be no discards or extra trump tricks from ruffing. So, at first glance, declarer needs either the heart or club finesse to work. Is there another possibility?

The obvious approach is to try each round-suit finesse. However, not many defenders would lead away from the heart king. It is true that North showed interest in a grand slam, so an aggressive opening lead is feasible. But against most players, South should win with dummy’s heart ace, draw trumps, cash the diamond winners, and cast adrift with a heart.

If East takes the trick, he must either lead into dummy’s club acequeen or concede a ruff-and-sluff.
