Quick primer on local races I wrote recently that it feels too soon for me to vote, but obviously not everyone agrees with me.

Given that people already are voting – as is their right – it seems like a quick rundown on the local contested races is in order. The full specimen ballot was posted last week on DeKalb County Clerk Doug Johnson’s website.

Early next week, our Election Central site will go live, including questions and answers from candidates in contested local races.

But if you want to hit the ballot box now, here’s some info on the local candidates: • In what’s probably the most intriguing local race, incumbent State’s Attorney Richard Schmack, a Democrat, is facing a challenge from Republican Richard Amato. Schmack has served an eventful first term, and said his agenda includes the endorsement of specialty courts and programs to keep crime at bay and address underlying societal problems. Amato won a three-way primary race in March, while pledging to increase cooperation between the state’s attorney’s office and area police departments, allow victims to have input during court proceedings, and speed up prosecutions.

• Both candidates for 23rd Circuit judge have ties to Northern Illinois University and interesting personal stories. Judge Bradley Waller first was appointed a judge in 2013.

Waller played basketball at NIU as an undergraduate from 1981 to 1985. He was a practicing attorney for more than 20 years and has been a bankruptcy trustee. Challenger Shannon Stoker, a Democrat, is an author and licensed attorney who has written a series of fiction novels published by HarperCollins. She is acting director of research compliance at NIU. • If you live in the Genoa-Kingston area, the County Board race in District 2 pits Democrat John J. Wett against Republican Jonathan Schmarje in a race for an open seat. Wett came to the area as an NIU student in 2003, where his advocacy for students with disabilities earned him accolades. I couldn’t find any info online about Schmarje’s politics or back-

• About half of Sycamore (the south and western half) will elect both of its County Board representatives this fall. In one race, Democrat Steve Faivre is seeking to retain his seat against Republican Demetri Broches.

Faivre, a longtime resident whose family farms in the area, already has served two nonconsecutive terms on the board and was appointed to fill a vacancy in August 2015. He said he wants to ensure that DeKalb County government is responsive and responsible to taxpayers.

Broches has been president of the DeKalb County Tea Party. He’s a fiscal conservative who said county government must be more responsible in spending.

The winner gets to serve the remaining two years of the term.

Democrat Virginia Sherrod is facing Republican Laurie Emmer for a four-year term on the board. Sherrod retired after working more than 20 years at the DeKalb and Sycamore school districts, and said she wants to reduce the jail population in the county and develop a mental health facility.

Emmer, a U.S. Army veteran, said the county needs to balance its budget without spending down reserves, and must work harder to not raise taxes even if it that requires coming up with creative solutions.

There aren’t many public referendums on the ballot, although the city of Sandwich is looking to implement a 1 percent sales tax.

Local judges seek to reform bail practices

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A DeKalb man charged with possession of child pornography was released from jail last week on his signature, a practice that is becoming more common in DeKalb County as judges work to reform bail practices.

Judge Ronald Matekaitis ordered 19-year-old Kevin Hagemeier released on a $5,000 recognizance bond on the condition that he have no contact with anyone younger than 18. DeKalb County Assistant State’s Attorney Alicia Caplan had asked for a $250,000 bond, requiring Hagemeier to post $25,000 bail to be released. The judge said he would reconsider the bond issue if additional charges were filed.

Local bail reform efforts are leading to more people such as Hagemeier being freed from jail while they await trial on charges. Although advocates say releasing more people on their own recognizance keeps the system fair, law enforcement leaders have concerns that it is becoming too easy for people to get out of jail.

Since June 2014, local judges have been working with the DeKalb County Court Services Department to move away from requiring defendants to post cash bail – usually 10 percent of the bond amount – to be released. Instead, the goal is to release people who cannot come up with cash on their own recognizance with conditions, such as electronic monitoring, designed to protect the public and make sure they return to court.

The push comes in response to a series of lawsuits in Southern states that have challenged the constitutionality of bail practices there.

“Somebody who is indigent or poor should not be disadvantaged in the criminal justice system as opposed to somebody who has wealth,” court services Supervisor Michael Venditti said during a recent presentation on local reform efforts. “That’s a form of discrimination and has been the primary basis of some of this litigation founded on the 14th Amendment.”

The 14th Amendment guarantees the right to equal protection under the law and due process of the law. Other bail reform lawsuits have challenged practices under the Eighth Amend-

Reasons for reform

The Illinois Supreme Court also has been encouraging reform of bail statutes and practices, 23rd Judicial Circuit Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert said. Stuckert has given presentations about bail reform throughout the state, serves on a bail reform committee for the Illinois Supreme Court, and has overseen a series of changes in DeKalb County to that end.

The reforms’ goal is to maximize the release of defendants before trial so they can hold onto jobs and meet other obligations, while maintaining public safety and ensuring that defendants appear in court.

In November 2015, Stuckert moved bond call hearings from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. to give employees in the DeKalb County Pre-Trial Services Department time to interview defendants and verify key information that judges consider when setting bond. The department

produces a report for each defendant that includes information such as their employment status, living arrangements, criminal history and how much money they might be able to post for release.

“I think that, sometimes, we forget that these defendants are presumed innocent, and we have to start with that theory,” Judge Philip Montgomery said.

The department recommends about 86 percent of recent arrestees for release, Venditti said.

Stuckert, who has been setting bond for defendants in DeKalb County for 15 years, said the individual risk assessments don’t eliminate the need for discretion.

“By no means should anyone walk away from our meeting today thinking that a pretrial risk assessment is a replacement for judicial discretion,” she said. “It is not; it is a tool – it is a good tool for judges to have, because we have verified information that we didn’t have before.”

Studies have shown that holding

defendants in custody before trial can be detrimental, Stuckert and Venditti said. Defendants stuck in jail can lose jobs, homes and other support systems before trial. Often, that leaves them in an even more desperate situation than before the arrest, Venditti said.

Nonviolent offenders and those charged with misdemeanors are most adversely affected by cash-based bond systems, said Paul Cain, a clinical professor at Northern Illinois University and member of the executive committee of the Illinois Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

In DeKalb County, 664 defendants were released from jail between June 2014 and June 2016, according to statistics that Venditti presented. Of those, 92 percent have made all mandatory court appearances, and 95 percent had no new arrests while out on bail. Of defendants who were arrested on new charges, “very few” were for violent offenses, he said.

NIU brings STEMfest back for 7th year

DeKALB – Interactive exhibits and demonstrations designed to help people explore the fields of science, technology, engineering and math will be on display at Northern Illinois University’s seventh annual STEMfest.

The festival, free and open to the public, will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at NIU’s Convocation Center, 1525 W. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb.

New to STEMfest this year will be a 3-D printer demonstration, a superconducting levitation display, a virtual reality experience and a building block station.

Returning exhibits include the Laser Lab, the Haunted Physics Lab, the STEM Read Book Fair, and the Midwestern Museum of Natural History’s bone and fossil collection and creepy-crawly petting zoo. Information is available online at www.stemfest.niu.edu.

About 7,500 people attended year’s festival, according to a news release.

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – District 428 school board members voted unanimously Tuesday to approve Bradley Hawk as the interim schools chief – then the NIU professor and former Burlington superintendent immediately took Doug Moeller’s former seat at the table and got down to business.

“I am excited about joining you as your interim superintendent,” Hawk told the board. “I can see that the school district is an outstanding school district, and I feel privileged to be able to serve you.”

Hawk will be going around to each school in the district Wednesday, accompanied by school board President Victoria Newport. She said the visits’ purpose is to introduce Hawk to teachers, administrators and students.

“Really, what we’re looking for is someone to get out in our buildings, talk to staff, talk to the kids and get a pulse of what’s going on out there,” Newport said. “And then come back to the board and let us know what’s going on.”

Hawk was one of two retired superintendents that the school board considered to step in for the embattled Moeller. None of the district’s current employees was qualified to fill the role, which by law requires a special certification.

School board member Kerry Mellott said he was concerned that the district is, in effect, paying for two superintendents at this point. But, he said, the district needs the interim. He added that he could not comment on Moeller’s fate because he didn’t know much about that.

However, Mellott offered praise for Hawk.

“He looks like a good fit for the district, he’s very experienced. I think he’s going to be a real level-headed superintendent for us,” Mellott said.

Hawk, who stepped down in 2009 as superintendent of Burlington Central School Dist. 301, will be paid $925 per day for up to 100 days of work through June 30, 2017, according to terms of his DeKalb Dist.

He can’t work more than that, due to rules of his pension, district officials explained.

Hawk, who lives in Crystal Lake – where his wife previously served as superintendent – said he would continue his work at NIU. As of Wednesday, he said, he reduced his time there to part-time. He said the classes he teaches there meet evenings and on Saturday.

“My goals will be to prepare the district for a fulltime person, if one is needed,” Hawk said.

Hawk takes over, albeit temporarily, for Moeller, who was placed on paid leave last month amid allegations he stalked DeKalb High School Principal Michele Albano. She filed for an order of protection against Moeller on Sept. 19. Then on Sept. 21, the school board sent notice to parents that he had been placed on leave.

Albano and Moeller were scheduled to go before a judge Wednesday morning regarding the order of protection.

news@daily-chronicle.com SOMONAUK – An 80-year-old man from Minnesota was arrested Tuesday on charges of disorderly conduct after police said he tried to lure a child into his vehicle near James R. Wood Elementary School, 320 Maple St. Gary D. Kadlec, of the 900 block of Buckridge Drive, Rochester, Minnesota, was located at a family member’s residence in Lake Holiday after Somonauk police sought tips from the public regarding the incident, according to a news release from the Somonauk Police Department.

Police received leads from others who Gary D. alleged that similar incidents occurred Kadlec involving Kadlec in Lake Holiday and Yorkville, according to the release.

Kadlec was released on bond, with a Nov. 16 court date in Sandwich.

About 5:43 p.m. Monday, the driver of a silver SUV stopped on LaSalle Street and asked a Somonauk Middle School student whether she needed a ride, according to an earlier news release.

The driver was described as a white man in his 50s who was bald, clean-shaven and wearing glasses, according to the release.

When the girl declined the ride, the man responded that the student’s backpack looked heavy. The student again declined the ride and asked the driver to leave. The man drove away headed east on LaSalle, according to the release.

SYCAMORE – Instead of banning donation boxes that some complained have become unsightly dumping grounds, the Sycamore City Council has decided to regulate them more closely.

The City Council voted unanimously Monday to adopt a new ordinance that requires annual license fees for such boxes, restricts the location of the boxes and sets penalties for those that fail to meet city standards or violate regulations.

The ordinance is designed to address recent complaints about donation boxes, including those from two different property owners who reported that donation boxes had appeared on their property without permission. When city employees tried to contact the company named on the boxes, they received no response, and the property owners ended up dismantling them, according to a city memo.

Under the terms of the ordinance, organizations would have to pay an annual $200 license fee and have written permission from the property owner. The fee would be waived for nonprofit organizations that operate in and serve DeKalb County.

The boxes would be permitted only in highway business districts – such as those along DeKalb

Avenue – and manufacturing districts. That means the boxes on the former Brown’s County Market property at 403 E. State St. would have to be moved or taken down. However, there would be an exemption for boxes under 3 cubic feet and those deemed accessory structures, which would allow some local nonprofits to pass muster.

Box operators would be required to respond to complaints with 24 hours during the week and within 48 hours over weekends.

Further, the boxes would be required to be placed in the rear or side of properties, rather than in front. There also are regulations governing the size of the boxes, contact information that must be contained for them, and standards for maintenance and appearance of the boxes.

City officials plan to reach out to property owners in the coming weeks about the new rules, City Manager Brian Gregory said.

“The way that the ordinance is written, the property owner and the operator are jointly liable for assuring that there’s a license and all the regulations are met,” he said.

The license program would start in May 2017.

He said the ordinance also makes property owners and box operates jointly liable should problems arise.

Mayor Ken Mundy said the regulations made more sense than an outright ban.

SYCAMORE – A judge could sentence a former Sycamore High School student to up to seven years in prison later this month, but his defense attorney is seeking probation for the 19-year-old, who pleaded guilty in August to aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

Cody P. Lynch, who has been jailed since his arrest in May 2015, pleaded guilty to a sin- Cody P. Lynch gle count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse involving a girl who was between 13 and 17 years old when the incident occurred in April 2015. At a sentencing hearing Monday, prosecutors linked Lynch to sex crimes with four girls. At least one of the girls was a freshman at Sycamore High School at the time.

However, Lynch has been convicted of a crime involving only one girl.

Prosecutors dropped a more serious charge of sexual assault in exchange for Lynch’s guilty plea in August, according to court records. At that time,

prosecutors also dropped a misdemeanor case involving another girl and said they would not seek new charges in two other cases, records show.

At Monday’s sentencing hearing, Assistant State’s Attorney Alicia Caplan called for testimony from Sycamore police investigators and Monique Heilemeier, a forensic interviewer with the Children’s Advocacy Center in DeKalb. Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert, who will sentence Lynch, also saw a video showing the victim’s interview with Heilemeier.

Lynch’s attorney, Robert Carlson of the DeKalb County Public Defender’s Office, called an expert witness; the defendant’s father, Kevin Lynch; and his father’s neighbor. The neighbor testified that if Lynch were given probation, he could live with her in Pekin, which is 176 yards away from Kevin Lynch’s home. The home would be monitored by security alarms and security cameras, which both Kevin Lynch and the neighbor would have.

Stuckert ordered the hearing continued to Oct. 19 to give her time to review evidence in the case before handing down a sentence.

Rosemary McMenamin, 91, of DeKalb, died Saturday, October 1, 2016, at Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb.

Born September 8, 1925, in Lee, the daughter of Lawrence and Mary (Stommel) Herrmann, Rosemary married John P. “Mic” McMenamin on February 7, 1948 in Lee. Rosemary graduated from Shabbona High School Class of 1943 and from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Aurora in 1946. She was employed as a nurse at St. Mary Hospital, DeKalb Public Hospital and Kishwaukee Community Hospital. Rosemary was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church of DeKalb.

She is survived by her children, Rita Jarczynski, Iowa City, Iowa, Ruth Ann McMenamin, DeKalb, Paul (Nancy) McMenamin, Galena, Steven (Nancy) McMenamin, Winters, California; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, Harold (Bertha) Herrmann, Rock City; and sister, Catherine Burgholzer of Washington.

She was preceded in death by her husband; brothers, Jerome Herrmann, Eugene Herrmann; and sister, Loretta Herrmann.

Simone Diane Roscelli “Momma” went to the arms of the blessed angels at the age of 92 on June 18, 2016, after a long illness surrounded by her family. She was born to Rachael (Wolfe) and Isaac Edell in Brooklyn, New York, on March 14, 1924. She was a lifelong poet, scholar, singer of beautiful songs, and world traveler.

After earning her bachelor’s degree at the City University of New York, Simone received her first master’s degree at Columbia University.

She married her college sweetheart, Arthur Burg, before he went off to fight in WWII. During the U.S. occupation of Japan, Simone went to live in Yokohama, Japan. from 1945 to 1952, serving in the State Department and joining MARJORIE EVA PETERSON Arthur, who worked for the Army. Vilma R. Ross, 95, of Rockford, Illinois, died Monday, October 3, 2016, at her son’s home in Rockford.

Born February 16, 1921, in DeKalb, she was the daughter of Joseph and Anna (Nelson) Panttila. Vilma graduated from DeKalb High School Class of 1939. She was employed by DeKalb Ag, Alameda Naval Air Station in California during World War II, and a bank in Houston, Texas. She retired in 1989 after 23 years at Northern Illinois University library.

She is survived by her son, James (Beverly) Ross, Rockford; grandsons Jason and Dan, Rockford; and cousin Helen Esther.

She was preceded in death by her son, Jack; her parents; sister, Viola Dodge; two brothers, Leo and Lande Panttila; a niece; and two nephews.

The Funeral Service will be held at 3:30 p.m.

Saturday, October 8, 2016, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb, with Vicar Preston Fields of First Lutheran Church in DeKalb officiating. Burial of cremated remains will be at a later date at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb. Visitation will be from 2:30 p.m. until the time of services Saturday at Anderson Funeral Home.

Victim says child abuse law protects ‘monster’ Hastert

CHICAGO – A man who said Dennis Hastert sexually abused him decades ago told Illinois lawmakers Tuesday that the former U.S. House speaker was “a monster” who was protected by the statute of limitations and wasn’t appropriately punished.

The comments from 54-year-old Scott Cross came as lawmakers are considering joining 37 other states that don’t have a statute of limitations for child sexual abuse cases. Hastert was sentenced in April to 15 months in prison for violating banking laws while trying to silence one of four victims identified by prosecutors, but Illinois’ statute of limitations meant he couldn’t be charged with sexual abuse, which could’ve sent Hastert to prison for decades.

“This topic, while difficult for me to discuss, is one that cannot be swept under the rug,” said Cross, his voice at times shaking as he urged a panel of lawmakers to change the limits of current law.

Lawmakers have four similar proposals pending that would eliminate Illinois’ statute of limitations for sexually abusing children. No votes were taken Tuesday, and the soonest the bills can be considered is next month, when lawmakers return to Springfield for a brief session.

Illinois records one of its warmest Septembers

CHAMPAIGN – Last month was one of the warmest Septembers on record in Illinois.

State climatologist Jim Angel said September’s average temperature was nearly 71 degrees, or 4.5 degrees above normal. State records go back to 1895.

September of this year was tied for sixth place with the year 2005.

The warmest September was a tie between 1933 and 1925, when the statewide average was 72.2 degrees.

Most parts of the state received 3 to 5 inches of rain. Southwestern Illinois was the wettest part of the state with between 5 and 7.5 inches of rain.

The statewide average for September’s rainfall was 3.47 inches, a bit above normal.

BERLIN – WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange promised “significant” disclosures on subjects including the U.S. election and Google in the coming weeks as the secret-spilling group marked its 10th anniversary on Tuesday.

Assange said WikiLeaks plans to start publishing new material starting this week, but wouldn’t specify the timing and subject.

Speaking by video link to an anniversary news conference in Berlin, he said the leaks include “significant material” on war, arms, oil, internet giant Google, the U.S. election and mass surveillance.

WikiLeaks hopes “to be publishing every week for the next 10 weeks,” Assange said.

WikiLeaks, which released Democratic National Committee emails days before the party’s national convention earlier this year, wouldn’t say who or what campaign would be affected by the upcoming U.S. election leaks.

Assange said speculation that he or WikiLeaks intend to harm Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton is “false.”

Tuesday. David Wildstein, who pleaded guilty in the gridlock scheme and is cooperating with prosecutors, said former Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Chairman David Samson told him the governors discussed the idea in October 2013. The report would have attributed the lane closures to a traffic study, covering up the true reason for the closures: political retribution against the mayor of Fort Lee for failing to endorse Christie’s 2013 re-election, Wildstein testified.

The report was never issued.

Colorado wildfire forces evacuation of town, valley

FARMVILLE, Va. – Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine aggressively challenged Donald Trump’s qualifications for the presidency Tuesday night, casting him as a “me-first” mogul who won’t level with Americans about his business record.

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence lashed back with criticism of Hillary Clinton but didn’t dispute that running mate Trump hadn’t paid federal taxes for years.

The two men, who have received little attention in a race focused on the top two candidates, faced off for 90 minutes in the only vice presidential debate of the campaign.

On taxes and Trump, Pence declared that “he used the tax code just the way it’s supposed to be used, and he did it brilliantly.”

Kaine, Clinton’s usually easygoing No. 2, went on the attack from the start, repeatedly interrupting Pence – an equally genial politician who continued on with mostly measured responses.

Kaine pressured Pence to answer for some of his running mate’s often controversial statements, using Trump’s own words, including some of the Republican’s demeaning comments about women. He also challenged Pence on Trump’s decision to break with decades of campaign tradition by not releasing his taxes.

“Donald Trump must give the American public his tax returns to show he’s prepared to be president, and he’s breaking his promise,” Kaine said.

Seeking to draw a contrast with Clinton and Kaine, Pence said Trump was “a businessman, not a career politician.” He panned the Democrats for offering frustrated Americans “more of the same.” He also leapt on former President Bill Clinton’s criticism this week of “Obamacare,” saying Trump would repeal the measure but not specifying what he would replace it with.

Kaine, too, defended his running mate’s weaknesses, chiefly the public’s questions about her honesty and trustworthiness. He said that while Trump was “selfish,” Clinton had devoted her career to helping children and families.

Kaine and Pence are far less familiar to most Americans than their running mates, who are among the most well-known figures in the country. Both vice presidential candidates have spent years in politics, are well-liked by colleagues and are deeply religious.

While their performances were unlikely to dramatically change the way voters view Trump and Clinton, the nationally televised debate was nevertheless a spotlight opportunity for them to introduce themselves to Americans, energize party loyalists and potentially sway the shrinking pool of undecided voters.

Tuesday’s debate comes as a close White House race appears to be tipping in Clinton’s favor after her strong showing in the first presidential debate. After an uneven debate performance, Trump bewilderingly spent the rest of the week defending comments he’d made 20 years earlier about a beauty queen’s weight.

Among them are murder suspects, such as Michael Kulpin, and those accused of sex crimes involving children, such as Andrew Arison. Kulpin is being held on $2 million bond; Arison is being held on bond of more than $6 million bond.

Police, victims have misgivings

DeKalb Police Chief Gene Lowery said that while he supports many of the changes underway in local courts, he has concerns about how effective they will be without additional support services. Pretrial services – along with specialty courts, such as drug court and mental health court – need to be adequately funded, Lowery said.

“If there are no services available, the changes may not have the impact we want them to have,” he said. “We need systems in place to support these changes.”

Lowery said some defendants should be incarcerated before trial to protect the public, especially violent offenders and those arrested on new charges while out on bond.

Sycamore Police Chief Glenn Theriault said reform is needed in the face of obvious faults in cash-based bond systems. However, he said, his top concern

is the safety of the community. He also said the changes should be accompanied by improved communication with victims.

That was a concern shared by DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott.

“I think this high priority [placed on] getting people out of jail quickly fails once again to think about the victims of crime and how they feel when they see the perpetrators out so quickly,” he said. “I believe that can be, at the least, unnerving and, at the worst, intimidating.”

Scott said his office has two people assigned to monitor people who have been released on electronic home monitoring, but ankle bracelets don’t prevent crimes.

A list of the 63 people on monitoring devices in DeKalb County as of Monday included those facing charges of armed robbery, predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, domestic battery, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of child pornography, among others.

While some judges have dismissed reform efforts as progressive policies, Stuckert said it is clear from what is happening in other states and the federal courts that a shift away from requiring cash bond is continuing.

“We decided in this community that if we see change coming, we do not want to be victims,” Stuckert said.

More fatalities after Wis. ups speed limit Before Wisconsin enacted the 70 mph speed limit on interstate highways in 2015, we suggested that officials monitor the results and provide a review within a year. In light of a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article last week that showed fatalities, injuries and accidents spiked in the wake of the increase, we think that review is even more urgent.

At the time, we supported the hike in the speed limit, arguing that it would bring Wisconsin in line with neighboring states and that “raising the posted limit by 5 mph probably won’t make much difference one way or the other.”

But the figures show that assessment may have been too optimistic. In Saturday’s article, reporter Meg Jones noted that, “In the 12 months following Wisconsin’s switch to 70 mph on interstate highways starting in June 2015, fatalities rose 37 percent on the interstate, injuries increased by 11 percent, and the total number of accidents rose 12 percent.

In that time, 10 more people died, 208 more were injured, and 1,057 more accidents were reported than the previous 12 months on interstate roads.”

Meanwhile, on state highways in Wisconsin where the speed limit for the most part remained the same, “fatalities dropped by just under 2 percent, accidents with injuries declined by 0.3 percent, and all accidents dipped 2 percent.”

That’s not conclusive evidence. There are lots of reasons for accidents, and speed is only one factor. Drunken driving is still a major issue in Wisconsin, and distracted driving – texting, calling, checking emails – has become a significant factor in causing accidents.

In addition, as the economy rebounds and gas prices remain low, the number of miles driven has gone up – while, according to census figures, the number of 16-year-olds eligible for driver’s licenses has increased and older drivers are staying on the road longer, Jones reported.

And studies on the topic have offered mixed results: The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reported that a new study by the group “shows that increases in speed limits over two decades have cost 33,000 lives in the U.S. In 2013 alone, the increases resulted in 1,900 additional deaths, essentially canceling out the number of lives saved by frontal air bags that year.” But a June 2013 Governing magazine article reported that Purdue University researchers found the likelihood of fatalities and serious injuries didn’t increase when Indiana raised its interstate speed limit from 65 mph to 70 mph in 2005.

But speed adds a killing factor: “There’s no doubt speed kills. The faster you go the more likely you’ll be killed,” Juneau County Sheriff Brent Oleson, president of the Badger Sheriff’s Association, told Jones. “Seventy-five mph compared to 55 mph, it’s almost a third less reaction time, and the average speed on the interstate is probably 75.”

Maybe the spike in fatalities, injuries and accidents was a one-year anomaly. Maybe it’s because of other factors, such as more distracted and impaired driving. But if speed is a factor, citizens deserve to know that and state officials should provide them with that answer as best they can through a thorough study.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Praise for Trump is off-base

To the Editor: I cannot let Kurt Bechle’s letter praising Donald Trump (page 23, Oct. 1 Daily Chronicle) go unanswered.

He asserts that Trump “is the only candidate who has pledged to protect the American worker from having his job shipped overseas.”

Trump has said this, but has failed to offer a plan for doing so. Furthermore, to think he actually would attempt it is to ignore his entire career.

He has, in fact, said that closing factories in higher-wage places such as Michigan and moving the jobs to right-to-work-for-less states would be a good thing, because after the laid-off workers were sufficiently desperate, you could move back and hire them for much less.

We are told to support him because he is a great businessman (despite the fact that government is not a business and cannot be run like one), but that claim likewise fails to hold water. His fortune – an empire built on his grandfather’s Klondike brothels and willed to him by his Klansman father, at whose knee he learned social values – is based on real estate.

And in his real estate operations, he has barely managed to hold onto his inheritance by making it his life’s work to contract for services, then refuse to pay for said services rendered in good faith – costing many small businesses huge amounts of

money.

This is in addition to the extra burden placed on us all by his unpatriotic practice of avoiding paying taxes.

Trump has no concern for the American worker or the small businessman.

Despite Bechle’s claim, people do not “smear” Trump and his sheep; the “rhetorical gaffes” he refers to are Trump’s clear declarations (creeping into his general incoherence) of racism, xenophobia, homophobia, misogyny and general vileness, and agreement with these is the only reason anyone supports him.

Trump’s business acumen is imaginary, his bigotry is all-encompassing, and his qualifications for president are nonexistent.

A hard-core Bernie Sanders supporter, I am no fan of Hillary Clinton, but do see how anyone not committed to white male supremacy could hesitate to vote against Trump, who is the worst presidential candidate this country ever has seen.

Despite the corporate media’s refusal to do their jobs and call him on his lies and hatred, I hope that he will, as Bechle hopes, energize nonvoters – and receive a trouncing that will forever bury both his political hopes and the right-wing shift in this country over the past 40 years.

Big 2nd half leads Spartans past Knights

sports@daily-chronicle.com MAPLE PARK – Sycamore used a big second half to secure a 4-0 win over Kaneland on Tuesday afternoon.

Sycamore (12-8-2) was outplayed during segments in the first half where it struggled to keep possession of the ball in the midfield and allowed Kaneland (6-8-1) to make long runs on itsside of the field. The Knights forced six shots on net in the first half, but scored no goals. On the other side, the Spartans had only two shots on goal, but David Schmitt’s shot found the net to put them on top, 1-0, with 17:15 left –

a lead they took into halftime.

“This is the game we needed,” Sycamore coach David Bachta said. “We really came out today focused, and we moved some people around. I think moving Joe O’Brien back to sweeper really calmed us down a bit. He won the 50-50 balls we really needed to win, and he seemed to calm us down from the back moving forward. We also moved David Schmitt to the midfield, and he and Austin Mereness were really able to help hold possession in that area and that is helpful in our success.”

In the second half, the Spartans switched to a higher gear and were

able to add three goals to slam the door on the Knights.

Phillip Maillefer scored nine minutes into the half on the assist by Drew Tronc. Two minutes later, Matthew Coulibaly scored on an assist from Maillefer. Coulibaly then added his second goal of the half with 8:58 to go on an assist from Jacob Parra. All three Sycamore goals in the half were scored on set pieces.

“I think our guys are fit and we’ve been working on that all season,” Bachta said. “We’ve played five or so more games than a lot of other teams.

When you peak at your fitness a lot of it has to do with your technical train-

ing and being organized in certain areas. Hopefully, we can continue to be in this shape going forward.”

Kaneland coach Scott Parillo said, defending on the set pieces is what ultimately hurt his team.

“I don’t think we’ve ever given up that many goals on set pieces,” Parillo said. “The wheels just fell off, and when you give up a few goals on set pieces, it’s pretty demoralizing. We’re young and we have to learn from these things. You kind of hope these things happen at the beginning of the season and not late in the season, but credit to Sycamore. They made those plays and we just didn’t today.”

Poised Cubs eye biggest prize of all

CHICAGO – The Cubs embraced the target and ran away with the best record in baseball.

Now that the playoffs are starting, the final mark is in sight. And if there is a little added pressure to nail it, well, manager Joe Maddon says bring it on.

“Those words pressure and expectations are positive words,” he said Tuesday. “You never want to be involved or associated with a situation that doesn’t have the certain level of expectations. ... I think it’s great. Those are the two words that should bring out the best in your performance.”

The Cubs are seeking the biggest prize of all after leading the majors with 103 wins and giving their long-suffering fans hope this might be the year to end a World Series title drought dating to 1908.

They will face the New York Mets or San Francisco Giants in an NL Division Series that begins Friday at Wrigley Field – what they hope will be the next step toward the ultimate prize.

A century-old championship hex could be a burden, but if one thing has defined this team as much as its sheer dominance, that would be its poise.

Nothing seems to rattle this bunch.

The Cubs have steadily powered on, and that might be the most impressive play for a team that delivered more than a few this year.

Whether it’s something innate in the players or a product of the atmosphere, this has been one cool bunch.

“We certainly, like most organizations, spend a lot of time trying to assess

guys’ makeup and what makes them tick, and the characteristics, how they might respond to adversity certainly and how they respond to pressure,” president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said. “But I think there’s something to be said for the culture in an organization and a clubhouse, the tone set by the manager and coaching staff, the veteran players, that allows guys to be themselves even in big moments.”

Talent, of course, helps, and the Cubs

have no shortage of that. With two MVP candidates in Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo and two NL Cy Young Award possibilities in Jon Lester and Kyle Hendricks along with last year’s winner Jake Arrieta, they are as loaded as any team in recent memory.

The Cubs led the majors in ERA and finished third in scoring. And the Cubs were particularly good late in games.

They pulled out 14 wins in their final at-bat, including a victory at Cincinnati in the season finale, and only two teams scored more runs from the seventh inning on.

“It’s just a message you bring out there every day,” Maddon said. “And I think it’s how you go about your business that promotes that kind of an attitude. You have to have good players. But beyond that, you have to kind of nurture the fact that you play nine innings hard every night and that anything can happen. The one thing I really wanted to get across is something’s going to go bad.

Something’s going to go wrong and it happens to everybody. But how do you react to that moment (is what) sets you apart.”

Maddon, of course, is known for promoting a relaxed and fun atmosphere.

Whether it’s onesie road trips or zoo animals visiting the ballpark, players have come to expect the unexpected.

It keeps them on their toes. But it also keeps them loose.

Playoff pitching matchups don’t get much better.

Toting his outstanding October résumé to the mound, Bumgarner will start for the San Francisco Giants against Syndergaard and the New York Mets in the NL wild-card game Wednesday night.

The winner moves on to face the major league-best Cubs (103-58) in a bestof-five Division Series. The loser heads home for the winter.

“It’s going to be an exciting game,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday, when both teams worked out at Citi Field. “I mean, this is the fun thing

about postseason is you’re going to get great matchups like this.”

It took 162 games to set it up.

San Francisco, the top team in the majors at the All-Star break, struggled badly throughout the second half before finishing with a four-game winning streak. That was enough to hold off St. Louis by one game.

New York, the defending NL champion, was two games under .500 Aug. 19 after losing consecutive games in San Francisco. But with slugger Yoenis Cespedes and shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera back from the disabled list, the Mets posted the top mark in the majors (2713) from that point on and jumped over four teams, booking their postseason trip Saturday with one game to spare.

Both teams finished 87-75, and New York earned home-field advantage by winning the season series 4-3.

“Good major league players, when it comes crunch time, they turn it on,” Mets manager Terry Collins said. “So

I’m not really sure that momentum going in means a whole lot. Both of us have had to play good at the end – we did.”

Citi Field should be rocking Wednesday night, but Bumgarner, Bochy and the Giants know all about excelling in elimination games and thriving under postseason pressure. After winning World Series titles in 2010, ’12 and ’14, they want to extend their pattern of even-year championships.

The last time Bumgarner pitched in the postseason, he saved Game 7 of the 2014 World Series in Kansas City with five scoreless innings on two days’ rest to cap one of the greatest postseason performances in baseball history. His 0.25 ERA in five career outings is the lowest for any pitcher with at least 25 innings in the Fall Classic.

He was 15-9 with a 2.74 ERA and 251 strikeouts this season.

“With us finishing up the way we did, I feel really, really good about our

chances,” Bumgarner said.

The 6-foot-5, 250-pound lefty, born in Hickory, North Carolina, started San Francisco’s playoff surge in the 2014 wild-card game by striking out 10 in a four-hit shutout at Pittsburgh – a similar assignment to Wednesday.

“We have been through this before.

We’ve been down this road. I like this wild-card thing,” Bochy said. “I love it.

I have to. We have a ring because of this wild card and have a chance now.”

The 24-year-old Syndergaard, with long blond locks and the nickname Thor, is no inexperienced sophomore.

The 6-foot-6, 242-pound righty from Mansfield, Texas, joined Bumgarner on the All-Star roster this summer and went 14-9 with a 2.60 ERA and 218 strikeouts over 1832/3 innings. Featuring a 100 mph fastball, sharp slider and impressive control of several secondary pitches, he won a pair of postseason starts last year – including Game 3 of the World Series against the Royals.

In women’s cross country, at Notre Dame’s Women’s Gold 5K on Friday in South Bend, Indiana, Brianna Bower had a time of 19:43.2 in the 5K for Eastern Illinois. The freshman from Kaneland was part of the Panthers’ team that finished eighth out of 28 teams.

Here’s a sampling of Tuesday’s queries sent to @adamjahns, who responds with more than 140 characters: @BPeddie03: Was Sunday a case of (offensive coordinator Dowell) Loggains figuring it out and putting a good game plan together, or just a display of poor (Detroit) defense?

A: You’re right in saying that the Lions have a poor defense. They also were without two key starters in defensive end Ziggy Ansah and linebacker DeAndre Levy because of injuries. But Loggains did have a good game plan for backup quarterback Brian Hoyer and rookie running back Jordan Howard.

But Loggains couldn’t execute that plan if the Bears’ defense struggled as it did against the Cowboys or if the offensive line didn’t do its job. The offensive line has improved significantly since Week 1 in Houston, when everything was in flux after left guard Josh Sitton was signed and rookie Cody Whithair was moved to center. @ryanwanders: (Deiondre’) Hall looks

A: You’re missing second-year cornerback Bryce Callahan, who actually started in place of Glenn opposite veteran Tracy Porter against the Lions.

Cra’Von LeBlanc, who was claimed off waivers from the Patriots before the season, was at nickel back for the second game in a row. Hall has flashed some in games. But what about in practice? I know what the inner-Allen Iverson in you is thinking, but the Bears’ defensive staff values every snap taken

at Halas Hall. Practices are where players still can prove themselves and win jobs. Callahan’s success in practice earned him the nickel-back job last season and also the start at cornerback against the Lions. LeBlanc’s productivity in practice led to his debut at nickel back against the Cowboys. There is a lot to like about Hall. He is viewed as a future starter. But give the fourthround pick time. The Bears are. @bearscubsillini: How is (Kyle) Long not a captain? I still wonder. I know it’s voted on by the players, but I figured he would be without question.

A: Good question. I thought he was a lock with quarterback Jay Cutler to represent the offense. But Bears players noticed the changes in Jeffery.

He’s been more vocal than in years past and not just among receivers. Long, however, still is a leader. He’s arguably the face of the franchise these days.

Don’t forget that coach John Fox uses a leadership council. Players from each position group are represented, and they have weekly meetings with Fox. Long’s voice is heard. @jp3chi: When (Jay) Cutler returns, how can he get more balls to (Kevin) White and (Alshon) Jeffery? One QB

favors another.

A: I know what you’re getting at.

Cutler seemed to focus on Jeffery too much in his two starts, while White was largely ignored. White’s miscue also led to Cutler’s first interception in the season opener. But White has improved over the past two weeks, and Cutler surely has noticed. It starts with Loggains, who has jumpstarted White by having him run routes he’s comfortable with at this point. Still, it’s unknown when Cutler and White will play together again. They’re both on the injury report right now. @PatRealPro: How much input does John Fox have in the offensive play-calling?

A: Play-calling? Loggains, who calls games from the press box, has freedom.

But Fox’s influence on game plans is often overlooked. His coordinators and coaches are in charge of formulating those plans, but Fox has his hands in everything. In general, Fox’s offensive philosophy requires an efficient, lowrisk performance by his quarterback and a strong, reliable running game that complements a staunch defense.

Of course, it doesn’t always work out that way.

Nicklaus, other players bid their farewells to Arnie

LATROBE, Pa. – A farewell to the King turned somber when Jack Nicklaus, his voice cracking as a large tear formed in his left eye, urged the elite and the everyman to remember how Arnold Palmer touched their lives and “please don’t forget why.”

“I hurt like you hurt,” Nicklaus said.

“You don’t lose a friend of 60 years and don’t feel an enormous loss.”

The service Tuesday at Saint Vincent College in Palmer’s hometown was filled with just as much laughter and warmth from stories of the most significant figure in modern golf. Nearly 1,000 golf dignitaries from around the world, referred to by former LPGA Commissioner Charlie Mechem as the “elite battalion of Arnie’s Army,” crammed into the basilica.

About 4,000 others headed to remote sites across the college to watch. Long lines of traffic formed two hours before the service began.

Palmer died Sept. 25 in Pittsburgh at age 87 as he was preparing for heart surgery. His family had a private funer-

“We were looking down at the air strip and the fog just suddenly lifted,” Ernie Els said after landing in one of

several private jets that descended on Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Latrobe. “This is a beautiful day. We’ve all met different people in life. He was a man who didn’t change. It didn’t matter if you cut the grass or you were a president. He was the same with everybody.

He was just ... he was the man.”

Palmer won 62 times on the PGA Tour, including seven major championships. He inspired the modern version of the Grand Slam by going over to the British Open and making it important in the eyes of Americans again. He was a captain twice in the Ryder Cup, and the gold trophy the Americans won Sunday at Hazeltine sat on a table for guests to see as they took their seats.

But this service was more about the lives Palmer touched than the tournaments he won.

In the large portrait at the front of the stage, Palmer wasn’t holding a golf club or a trophy. It was just the King and that insouciant grin that made everyone feel like they were friends, even if they had never met.

“Have there been better golfers? Perhaps, but not many. Has anyone done more for the game? No one has come

even close,” former Royal and Ancient Golf Club chief Peter Dawson said. “Is there a finer human being? I haven’t met one yet.”

Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III, Phil Mickelson and a few other members of the U.S. team were there. So was the generation before them, Tom Watson and Curtis Strange, Lee Trevino and Mark O’Meara. Dozens of others were there, along with the heads of every major golf organization. All of them alternately smiled and wiped away the occasional tear.

PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem said he had known Palmer since 1957 – Finchem was 10 that year – because “when you saw him play, it was the same thing as meeting him.” He said Palmer brought so many people to golf because of his attacking style, his television appeal and how he carried himself.

“He had this other thing,” Finchem said. “It was the incredible ability to make you feel good – not just about him, but about yourself. I was amazed by how people reacted to him. He took energy from that and turned right around and gave it back.”

Parker scores 29 points to help Sparks eliminate Sky

ROSEMONT – Candace Parker scored 29 points and the Los Angeles Sparks beat the Sky, 95-75 ,on Tuesday night to advance to the WNBA Finals.

Kristi Toliver added 21 points and league MVP Nneka Ogwumike had 17 points and nine rebounds for the Sparks, who led by as much as 28 and won the semifinal series, 3-1.

They will face the defending champion Minnesota Lynx in a best-of-5 series for the league title.

Lawyer cries foul as Rose speaks out about rape case

LOS ANGELES – Derrick Rose’s rape trial got underway in a Los Angeles courtroom Tuesday and the NBA star was halfway across the country saying he planned to win the lawsuit.

Rose told reporters in Houston before the Knicks exhibition opener that he didn’t settle the case seeking $21 million because he thinks he didn’t do anything wrong and he looks forward to telling his side of the story.

“That’s one of the reasons why I wanted to take it to court because I didn’t want to settle,” Rose said. “I don’t feel like I did anything wrong. If I go up there and just tell my side of the story, I think I’ll be alright.”

Sharapova to return in April after doping ban reduced

LONDON – Maria Sharapova will be eligible to return to competitive tennis in April after her two-year doping ban was reduced to 15 months on Tuesday by a sports court that found the Russian star bore no “significant fault” for her positive drug test and did not intend to cheat.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport cut nine months off the suspension imposed on Sharapova, who tested positive for the banned heart medication meldonium at the Australian Open in January.

Sharapova, a five-time Grand Slam champion and former No. 1-ranked player, appealed to CAS in June seeking to overturn or reduce the two-year penalty imposed by the International Tennis Federation.

Young forwards could be key to Hawks’ season

The Associated Press CHICAGO – There are plenty of nice pieces, beginning with NHL MVP Patrick Kane, star center Jonathan Toews and Calder Trophy winner Artemi Panarin.

How they fit together is the big question for Blackhawks’ coach Joel Quenneville.

The Hawks traded Andrew Shaw and Teuvo Teravainen and lost Andrew Ladd in free agency over the summer, leaving three big holes. Dale Weise and Tomas Fleischmann also left in free agency, and Marian Hossa, long one of the Hawks’ most consistent forwards, is coming off a down year.

The result is an unsettled situation for the Hawks’ four lines that Quenneville might need some time to sort out.

“That unpredictability sometimes can be healthy in a lot of ways, knowing that guys are pushing and decisions – when we have tough decisions – we feel we’re a better team and a better organization when it comes down to that type of situation,” Quenneville said Tuesday.

Kane, Panarin and center Artem Anisimov combined for one of the NHL’s most productive lines last season.

Kane was the league’s top scorer with 106 points, and Panarin had 30 goals and 47 assists in an impressive rookie season. Anisimov finished with 20 goals and 22 assists in his first year in Chicago.

But Kane and Panarin are the Hawks’ best playmakers, and Quenne-

ville could break up their second line to create more balance. Hossa, who turns 38 in January, could play on any one of the Hawks’ top three lines depending on how it shakes out.

“Regardless of who I’m playing with, it’s up to me to make sure that I’m trying to enable those other two guys to be the best they can be as well,” Toews said.

The play of the Hawks’ top forward prospects also will affect the look of their lines. Tyler Motte, a former University of Michigan star, and speedy Vincent Hinostroza, a Chicago-area native who played college hockey at Notre Dame, each looked great in camp. Nick Schmaltz, a first-round pick in the 2014 draft, also is in the mix.

The Hawks look pretty settled on defense. Brian Campbell, who led NHL defensemen with a plus-31 plus-minus rating last season with Florida, signed a one-year deal in July, returning to the Hawks after helping the Hawks win the Stanley Cup in 2010.

The addition of Campbell gives the Hawks one of the best defensive lineups in the league, topped by two-time Norris Trophy winner Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook and Niklas Hjalmarsson.

Michal Kempny, who signed with the Hawks on May 24 and played for Czech Republic in the World Cup, also is an intriguing prospect for the third pairing.

“This is probably the deepest D-corps group we’ve had since I’ve been in this organization,” said Hjalmarsson, who made his NHL debut with the Hawks in 2008.

Some like it hot! Cheesecake, that is. Trust us and try it!

Cheesecake usually is served cold.

So brace yourself for something a little different.

The first time I made this recipe, I pulled it out of the oven and set it on the counter to cool. The plan was to chill it overnight in the refrigerator.

But my dear daughter – also known as The Girl with the Sweet Tooth – just couldn’t wait to dig in. So I handed her a spoon. And when she started babbling with delight, I tried it, too.

It was ridiculously good. So good I now recommend you serve this cheesecake hot, right out of the oven, topped with a little vanilla ice cream or sweetened whipped cream.

That said, getting there requires some care. Be sure to buy plain pumpkin purée, which is sometimes labeled solid pack pumpkin. Avoid anything labeled “pumpkin pie filling” or “pumpkin pie mix,” both of which contain unwanted sugar and spices.

You’re much better off adding those ingredients yourself.

Also, don’t forget to drain the pumpkin purée. Losing the excess liquid from the purée improves the final texture and flavor of the cake.

The cooking also requires some care. You’re going to cook the cake in a water bath, which helps to equalize the temperature in the oven and prevents overcooking. But first the springform pan must be tightly wrapped with foil to prevent any water from leaking into the batter while the cake is baking.

Finally, do your best to not overbake the cake, which will make it dry and crumbly. After the allotted cooking time, it still should be a little jiggly. The residual heat will continue to cook it even after you pull it out of the oven.

By the way, this cheesecake also is a knockout when it’s served the usual way – cold. If you decide to go this route, run a knife around the outside edge of the cake to separate it from the pan as soon as you remove the cake from the oven. This will allow the cake to remain intact as it shrinks in on itself, rather than cracking down the middle as it vainly attempts to unglue itself from the sides of the pan.

hours – before wrapping it tightly and popping it in the refrigerator to chill overnight. When it’s time, run a knife around the edge of the pan again, carefully remove the side of the pan, then slice the cheesecake with a knife dipped in hot water. And don’t forget the crowning glory. As noted, whipped cream or ice cream are the accessories of choice.

Warm Pumpkin-Bourbon Cheesecake

Start to finish: 2 hours (45 minutes active) Servings: 16 For the crust: 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted, plus extra for the pan 1 ¼ cups gingersnap cookie crumbs (made by pulsing about 25 cookies in a food processor until finely ground) 1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar 1/4 teaspoon table salt For the filling: 15-ounce can pumpkin puree 3 large eggs 1/2 cup packed dark brown sugar 2 tablespoons heavy cream 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 cup bourbon, dark rum or cognac

1/2 cup granulated sugar 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon ground dry ginger 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice 1/2 teaspoon table salt Three 8-ounce packages 1/3-less-fat cream cheese (Neufchatel), room temperature Vanilla ice cream or lightly sweetened whipped cream, to serve Heat the oven to 375 degrees F. Brush the inside of a 9-inch springform pan with melted butter.

To make the crust, in a medium bowl, stir together the 6 tablespoons of butter, the gingersnap crumbs, brown sugar and salt until combined well. Pour the crumb mixture into the pan and press it evenly over the bottom of the pan. Bake on the oven’s middle shelf for 10 minutes. Transfer to a cake rack and cool for 30 minutes.

Reduce the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a mesh colander with a clean kitchen towel. Mound the pumpkin puree into the towel and set over a medium bowl. Bring the ends of the towel up and gently squeeze to remove excess water (you should be able to squeeze out about 1/4 cup of liquid). Discard the liquid.

Rinse and dry the bowl, then in it mix together

the pumpkin, eggs, brown sugar, cream, vanilla and bourbon. Set aside.

In a large bowl, stir together the granulated sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, allspice and salt. Add the cream cheese, then use an electric mixer on high to beat until smooth, about 3 minutes. Add the pumpkin mixture to the cream cheese mixture and beat on low, just until combined.

Bring a large kettle of water to a boil.

Use foil to wrap the bottom and sides of the springform pan. Pour the filling into the pan. Fold a kitchen towel so it fits evenly in a roasting pan just a bit larger than the springform pan. Set the springform pan on top of the towel in the roasting pan. Working quickly, pour enough boiling water into the larger pan to come halfway up the sides of the springform pan. Bake the cheesecake for 65 to 70 minutes, or until it is mostly set but still slightly jiggly at the center.

Spoon some of the cheesecake onto each serving plate and top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a spoonful of whipped cream.

Onion corn bread leaves lasting memory

Over the summer, I traveled to Wooster, Ohio, for a barbecue summit at the headquarters of Certified Angus Beef.

It was a trip filled with learning, camaraderie – and lots of smoked beef.

My fellow barbecue pit masters and I visited a black angus ranch, talked barbecue non-stop, cut a side of beef together – or rather watched as the “meat doctor” Phil Bass cut and explained.

I was introduced to several new cuts including beef belly – also known as beef bacon – which I immediately made when I got back home. But, the standout of the trip wasn’t barbecue at all. Instead, it was a Vidalia onion cornbread made by Ashley Pado, chef of the education and culinary center at Certified Angus Beef headquarters.

Pado headed up a team of chefs preparing that day’s feast that included a table of smoked beef, numerous side dishes, home-baked breads, pickled vegetables and that memorable cornbread that sparkled with a pave of caramelized Vidalia onion rings set in the bottom of the cornbread.

When Pado served the cornbread, she inverted it in the cast-iron pan so you could see the concentric circles of onion baked into the bottom. Even before we took a bite, the group marveled at the presentation and wondered why more people don’t embellish cornbread.

The cornbread itself is light and cakey with a little tang and a little sweetness, but the salty savory almost-fried onions take it over the top. Pado sautéed the onions in beef bacon since she had it in her

pantry. When I made the recipe, I adapted it using pork bacon, but you could use butter or any kind of bacon that you can get your hands on.

Ashley’s Vidalia Onion Cast-Iron Cornbread Start to finish: One hour Servings: 8

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour 2/3 cup granulated white sugar 1/2 cup yellow corn meal 1 tablespoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 cup heavy cream 1/2 cup buttermilk 3 whole eggs, beaten 1/3 cup vegetable oil 3 tablespoons melted butter 1 large Vidalia onion, sliced thin and kept together as one piece in rounds 4 slices bacon, diced Equipment: 9- or 10-inch cast-iron skillet Heat oven to 375 degrees F. Sauté bacon over low heat in skillet until crisp. Meanwhile, slice thin rounds of onions, making sure you keep them intact and in one piece.

Remove bacon from pan but leave the bacon grease for the onions to cook in. Carefully place the onion rounds in the bottom of the pan to cover the surface. Let onions cook until the edges begin to brown. Be careful to keep onions in place – the bottom of the skillet will have a “polka-dot” pattern. Season onions with a dusting of fresh ground black pepper. Turn off the heat and set

aside until ready to bake the cornbread. If the pan cools down, warm the pan on low heat before pouring the cornbread batter in pan.

In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, corn meal, baking powder and salt. Set aside.

In a separate bowl, mix together the cream, buttermilk, oil, eggs and melted butter until combined – the mixture will emulsify. Set aside.

Add wet to dry ingredients and mix until combined. Don’t over mix. Batter should look slightly lumpy.

Just before baking, add the cooked bacon back to the pan and place in the areas around the onions, not on top of the onions or it will interfere with the onion pattern. Pour cornbread batter directly into hot pan. Place in the center rack of the oven and bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.

Cool in the pan for 20 minutes, run a blunt knife around the edges of the cast-iron skillet to make sure that it isn’t sticking on the sides. Carefully turn the skillet upside down and flip cornbread out of pan to expose onion rounds – you can invert the cornbread and place it upside down back into the skillet for serving.

Serve at room temperature or warm.

Every other year, the manufacturing world gathers in Chicago to dazzle manufacturing insiders with new creations, share innovations and spark new ideas for the future.

This year, 76 area high school students joined the crowds at McCormick Place to see the latest and greatest from within the manufacturing sector.

From the microscopic to gigantic, the show has something for everyone. The Student Smartforce area concentrated on aerospace projects this year. Students designed, built and launched rockets to compete for scholarships, fame and the joy of watching their project fly.

Lenses come in different shades, for different situations. For example, dark lenses are best for a sunny day on the water, while lighter tints might be better choices for overcast days. These days, you can get “photochromic” lenses that change their shade depending on the amount of light.

Indoors, they are clear. Outside in bright sun, they become a dark shade.

• Optical quality. When you’re trying on sunglasses, focus on a vertical edge or line and move your head back and forth. If the line wiggles, the lens might have an optical defect.

• The fit. You want the frames to fit comfortably, with the lenses directly in front of your eyes.

• The cost. There is no relationship between the price tag on a pair of sunglasses and the protection it offers. As long as the labels specify 99 percent or 100 percent UV protection, or UV400, and have no optical defects, an inexpensive pair from a dollar store will do the job as well as pricier sunglasses from a designer boutique. If you want glasses that change their shade depending on the amount of light, such prescription lenses will cost you more.

Most people who buy expensive sunglasses are spending their money on how they think the glasses look, not on the “high quality” of the glasses.

Dear Reader: When you buy sunglasses, it’s natural to look for a style that looks good on you and is comfortable. But don’t fail to consider the most important detail: the amount of harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation the lenses screen out. Without proper UV protection, sunglasses can work against you by enabling you to see comfortably in light that is harming your eyes.

UV radiation can penetrate the clouds, even on overcast winter days. That’s why the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends everyone wear sunglasses whenever they are outdoors.

Since 1998, the FDA has regulated nonprescription sunglasses as medical devices.

It requires lenses to be impact-resistant, nontoxic and nonflammable. Beyond that, though, options vary, and some choices are better than others. You’ll want to consider the following: • The label. Look for 99 percent or 100 percent UV protection, or UV400, which means the lenses absorb wavelengths up to 400 nanometers, thus blocking all harmful UV rays.

• The size. The larger the lenses, the better protection they offer. Wraparound lenses are the best because they prevent UV rays from entering at the side.

• The shade. Although it might seem counterintuitive, darker isn’t automatically better. The darkness of the lens affects only the ability to filter out visible light.

The protection from UV light is conferred by coatings applied to the lens.

Yet shading is important in protecting you from glare – a different problem from UV light. For many people, very bright light

Dear Abby: My DEAR ABBY husband travels frequently with Jeanne a work crew. It Phillips is not unusual for them to be gone for months at a time. During these absences, some of the married men on this crew cheat on their wives, who are at home with their children.

If you try to discuss this further with your dad, you might be at risk for violence.

It’s important you find an adult you trust who can intervene on your brother’s behalf – a teacher, a relative or even a neighbor.

Another strong male might be what it takes to protect your brother.

Dummy has a heart and a diamond, and South the heart king-jack. East must keep a high diamond, so can retain only one heart. Then, when declarer leads dummy’s heart, if East plays the queen, South claims. If East plays low, South puts up his king and hopes to drop West’s queen. It is called a show-up squeeze.
