After Zika, critical to monitor POLL babies’ health – but how long?

WASHINGTON – More federal money finally is available to fight Zika even as the news worsens. Babies who at first seem to have escaped the virus’ devastating hallmark defect – an abnormally small head at birth – might not be out of the woods after all.

Brazilian doctors have counted a small number of babies who at birth had a normal-sized head and only later were found to have problems. They have delayed neurodevelopment. At 5 months, one could use one hand but not the other. Later on, some even developed that defect, called microcephaly.

The brain and skull weren’t growing properly after birth, instead of before.

“Microcephaly is only the tip of the iceberg, only the thing we see when the baby is born,” Dr. Vanessa Van der Linden, a pediatric neurologist in Recife, Brazil, told a meeting at the National Institutes of Health where she outlined a long list of Zika-related abnormalities.

To children’s health experts, the message is clear. Intense study is needed of babies born to Zika-infected mothers to learn the range of health problems they may face.

“It is just critical to evaluate the entire child. Even in the child who does not have microcephaly, that doesn’t mean no evaluation is needed,” said Dr. Catherine Spong of the NIH’s National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, which despite budget constraints has begun research to better understand the risk to babies.

After months of partisan bickering, Congress last week passed a budget bill that includes $1.1 billion to address the Zika crisis.

It’s just over half the total emergency money that President Barack Obama requested last February.

While mosquito season is winding down in parts of this country, Zika’s threat here and abroad is not diminishing, and that’s why health officials say a sustained commitment is vital.

There are more than 2,200 pregnant women among the 25,600-plus Zika cases that the

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention counts in U.S. states and territories, mainly Puerto Rico. The vast majority of mainland infections are travel-related, but mosquitoes have been spreading Zika in Florida’s Miami-Dade County.

Out of money over the spring and summer, the government had raided funds meant for other diseases – Ebola, malaria, tuberculosis, even cancer and heart disease – to research and fight Zika. The new cash infusion will go to mosquito control, other public health measures and research. At the top of the list is keeping development of a Zika vaccine on track.

In the continental U.S., the CDC said 21 babies have been born with defects attributed to Zika, and doctors are looking to colleagues in harder-hit countries to know what to expect. At the recent NIH meeting, Van der Linden catalogued a sobering list of abnormalities in the most severely affected babies at her Brazilian clinic, the ones born with microcephaly – which by itself can’t indicate the degree of underlying brain damage.

She showed videos of those babies having seizures. They tend to cry nonstop. They may not eat enough – only about an ounce of milk at a time – because of painful reflux and trouble swallowing. Their muscles are stiff and spastic. They have vision and hearing problems.

If that isn’t worrisome enough, Van der Linden then highlighted less severe problems that appeared later among about a dozen babies who’d appeared healthy at birth, and Dr. Carmen Zorrilla of the University of Puerto Rico added that she’s seen eye problems among a handful of babies born without microcephaly.

How many babies might be at risk from Zika? How long will they need to be monitored for health problems?

NIH’s child health agency has begun a study to try to tell. In areas where Zika is spreading, researchers plan to enroll 10,000 women in the first trimester of pregnancy and then track all the babies through the first year of life.

DeKalb’s Hopkins Park hosts annual cyclocross event

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Hopkins Park was transformed into a 2-mile cyclocross course Sunday as more than 750 cyclists from northern Illinois and surrounding states competed in various races throughout the day. Hopkins Park has hosted the competitive racing event for nine years.

Cyclocross is a combination of road biking and mountain biking, and Sunday’ s course was entirely in the grass at the park. This was the second race in the Chicago Cross Cup series, in which recreational and even some professional cyclists participate in every year.

Joshua Arends, a Sycamore native and 1999 Sycamore High School graduate, is the race director. He and his crew spent all of Saturday setting up the closed-circuit course. The now-Chicago resident said anyone can participate in the sport, regardless of ability.

“The park lends itself well for the event because the terrain is varied enough, we have a building to use for registration, and there’s plenty of parking,”he said. “This is for fun and fitness, and anyone can sign up and do this. We have races for beginners to elite. I love doing the race out here because we’re bringing a race to a community that likes cycling instead having them always come to Chicago.”

There are more than 10 categories of races that cyclists can compete in, broken down by age, gender and previous cyclocross experience. The objective is to complete as many laps around the grass course as possible in a set amount of time.

Brian Conant, 48, of DeKalb has been racing in cyclocross events for many years and now competes at the highest level. He said he looks forward to this race every year because it’s in his hometown and in a perfect setting.

“I love to bike, and this race is a blast. It’s one of the most popular races on the circuit,” he said. “This is a great time. It’s one of the few races where you can see a lot of the course. Racers are going hard for 30 to 60 minutes.”

Sunday’s race was the first for Naperville resident Heather Glynn. The 38-year-old said she’s a triathlete but wanted to try something different. She said that although she was cautious on the course, she’s enjoying the sport.

“The hardest part is not knowing the terrain, but I like it. I just decided to do it, so I’m winging it,” she said.

involved in cyclocross racing for five years. He said it’s a good way to stay in shape while having fun.

“This is very difficult. It’s similar to mountain biking, but has more of a bike-handling emphasis, which I like,” he said.

John Rockwell of St. Charles was racing in the 45-plus age group while

fighting a cold. Despite not feeling well, he said he had fun and was happy he finished.

“This is very challenging, but it’s nice because all walks of life can come out and do this, and it’s a fun, family-type event. Everyone really encourages each other,” he said.

The event also has events for chil-

dren and teens. Rockwell’s 12 year-old son, Lexton, raced in the juniors 9-to-14 age group.

“This is my third year of doing this, and it’s fun. I like to cheer on the other racers,” he said. “Some parts are hard because of the terrain, and this course has some twists and turns. But I like to do this with my dad.”

Anna Main, 16, of Downers Grove has been racing for only a few months, and got involved because her father is an avid cyclist. Sunday’s race was only her third, but she said she’s really enjoying it.

“I like the energy, and the people are awesome to be around,” she said.

“It’s challenging and not easy to do the courses. They’re different at every race.”

Wendy Esposito, 44, of Bartlett looks forward to the Hopkins Park race every season. She said she likes this race because it’s always challenging and competitive.

“I feel like a kid, riding around on my dirt bike with my brothers,” she said. “This is a power course. You need to have endurance for this one. It’s long and steady, and there’s no recovery.”

Police seek information after Kubota theft near Kingston

KINGSTON – DeKalb County Crime Stoppers is seeking information about the theft of a Kubota utility vehicle stolen on the night of Sept. 25 from a work site in the 29000 block of Church Road near Kingston.

The vehicle was recovered the next day and had been damaged. The Kubota had an ATV trailer attached at the time.

Anyone with information about the crime, the items taken or the people involved is asked to call DeKalb County Crime Stoppers at 815-895-3272. Callers do not have to give their names.

Crime Stoppers will pay a cash reward up to $1,000; callers can remain anonymous.

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Latricia “Tish” Dawkins said she was skeptical when she received a call from a DeKalb Lowe’s representative searching for elementary school candidates to donate more than $2,500 in materials.

As principal of Jefferson Elementary School – or any public school in Illinois – “free” is a pipe dream, and she thought her husband was playing a prank, Dawkins said.

“It definitely was too good to be true, so I went home, and I’m like, ‘You are such a goof. Why would you play with me like that?’ ” Dawkins said. “And he was like, ‘You might want to return their call, because that’s real.’ ” Jefferson Elementary School, 211 McCormick Drive, was the only school in the area to return the phone call of home improvement store employee Rick Hall. He had been searching for local schools in financial need for the annual volunteer initiative Lowe’s Heroes.

“I just don’t think people think there’s things for free, and it’s hard to convince somebody,” Hall said. “You call them and say, ‘We’d like to do a project for you,’ and their immediate

response is ... . ” “What do I owe you?” Dawkins interrupted.

Lowe’s store manager Donovan Burtnette said he and his team decided that an elementary school would gain the most from what they could provide. Jefferson Elementary School was chosen because of its needs and Dawkins’ eagerness, he said.

More than 200 man-hours were poured into preparing, constructing and installing materials before and during Saturday, including mulch

for the playground, window shades to block intruders from peering into classrooms, picnic tables for outside lunches, and a surround-sound speaker system for the gymnasium, among other things.

Head custodian Janis Davis said that in her 15 years at the school, she never has witnessed such a large volunteering effort.

“I think it’s awesome. I think it is fantastic for the school and the school district,” Davis said. “I’m just so excited.”

DeKALB – Safe Passage will host a screening this month of the Netflix documentary “Audrie & Daisy,” followed by a panel discussion about efforts to prevent sexual violence.

The screening and panel discussion will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 18 in the 4 Seasons Room at the Community Outreach Building, 2550 N. Annie Glidden Road, DeKalb.

The documentary focuses on two different girls who were sexually assaulted, and it “takes a hard look at the issues faced by America’s teenagers who are coming of age in the new world of social media bullying, spun wildly out of control,” Netflix said.

After the documentary, there will be a panel discussion from local experts and administrators about efforts to prevent sexual violence and subsequent victimization via social media, the prevalence of reported sexual assault among teens in DeKalb County, and the impact of these individual and collective abuses, said Safe Passage Prevention Program Director Sarah Slavenas.

The panel will include DeKalb County Regional Office of Education Superintendent Amanda Christensen.

The event is intended raise awareness about these issues and is aimed at parents, teens, school faculty and administrators.

Safe Passage is a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing and preventing domestic violence and sexual assault in DeKalb County. It provides services to victims of domestic and sexual violence such as crisis intervention and medical advocacy for victims of domestic and sexual violence, short- and long-term housing for victims and their children, community education and a batterer’s intervention program.

LOCAL BRIEF KC hosting FAFSA Completion Nights for area students

The Kishwaukee College Financial Aid Office will host free workshops this month and next to assist local students with filing the 2017-18 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

The sessions will be 6 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 12 and 27 and Nov. 15 in Room A1345 at the college, 21193 Malta Road, Malta.

Participating students and their parents should plan to spend about 30 minutes to complete the FAFSA. Participants should park in Lot A/South Lot and enter through Doors 16 or 17.

The FAFSA form is the first step in filing for financial aid to attend a college or university. The 2017-18 FAFSA is for financial aid for the next academic year, typically beginning in with fall 2017.

Cyndi Stonesifer, director of financial aid at Kishwaukee College, reminds area residents of a change in filing date for the FAFSA. For anyone planning to attend Kishwaukee College or any other college or university in the 2017-18 academic year, the filing date opened Oct. 1.

Stonesifer said the FAFSA is the basic building block of all financial aid packaging for college students across the U.S. Filing the FAFSA is the first step in de-

termining what federal or state financial aid a student is eligible for. Filing early might qualify a student for funding from a wider variety of financial aid sources.

The FAFSA Completion Nights allow students and their parents an opportunity to fill out the FAFSA form with assistance from financial aid professionals from Kishwaukee College and high school guidance counselors from Kishwaukee Educational Consortium.

Students should bring their 2015 income verification, including their 2015 Federal Tax information or Federal 1040 tax forms (if filed) or W-2 forms.

Students and parents should know their social security number(s) and driver’s license or alien registration numbers. Before attending the FAFSA Completion Night, students filing the FAFSA for the first time and parents should go to www. studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa/filling-out/ fsaid to create their Federal Student Aid ID, which is required to submit the FAFSA electronically.

Tips Oatmeal Around the World

Fun fact: Oatmeal is not just a boring breakfast cereal; it is so much more! In fact, oatmeal is used throughout the world in many other ways than just your typical rolled oats, milk and sugar for breakfast.

Oats have been a staple in many countries for thousands of years. Oats are cheap to grow, process, transport and buy and are packed with nutrients! The soluble fiber found in this grain contribute to lowering cholesterol, preventing high blood pressure, decreasing the risk of developing diabetes and many more health benefits.

In the United States, we typically use old-fashioned oats, quick oats or instant oats. All of these have been cut from the original whole-grain kernels called groats. The difference isn’t much except for texture and cooking time. These types of oats make great breakfast cereal and overnight oatmeal recipes. Both types of recipes can be found at hy-vee.com.

But remember, you don’t have to enjoy oatmeal just for breakfast. Your grandmother probably used oatmeal in her famous meat loaf to hold the recipe ingredients together, and your mom probably makes the best apple crisp dessert using oats.

Steel-cut oats are often called Scottish or Irish oatmeal.

These kernels are not cut but instead are crushed and ground, creating small broken grain pieces. Steel-cut oats are often prepared in Scotland and Ireland by boiling for a long period of time with milk or water. States seek to fill digital inheritance law gaps

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – When a loved one dies, laws cover how their houses, cars, and other property are passed on to relatives. But the rules are murkier – and currently far more restrictive – when it comes to pictures on Facebook, emails to friends or relatives and even financial records stored in online cloud accounts.

Google, Facebook and other companies have said a federal privacy law approved decades before digital storage became common prevents them from releasing electronic memories or records unless the account owner grants permission – even if the person is dead.

Without an estate plan, families must try to crack their loved one’s passwords or take the costly step of litigating the matter to access photos and emails – and some have, with little success.

The laws governing how to divide belongings after someone dies have not caught up with the technological advances that have permeated the ways people communicate, but states have begun trying to bridge that gap. This year, Illinois was one of 19 states that passed similar laws to clarify what internet companies can release after someone dies and when information should remain inaccessible.

Police fatally shoot man outside Markham nightclub

MARKHAM – Illinois State Police said they are investigating the fatal shooting of a man by police in southwest suburban Chicago.

State Police Master Sgt. Jason Bradley said the shooting happened early Sunday outside a nightclub in Markham. Bradley said a Markham police officer fatally shot the man.

The Cook County medical examiner identified the slain man as 36-year-old Donte Jones of Maywood, who died at a nearby hospital.

Man accused of causing $13 million in losses at firm

CHICAGO – A federal grand jury in Chicago has indicted a man accused of fraudulently causing $13 million in losses

Facebook lets users choose a “legacy contact” to access their account, and Gmail has an “account trustee” option.

In instances where people use those options, the companies’ agreements with them will supersede the state laws.

Even with the new laws, planning is necessary at a time when many still don’t think about the contents of their internet accounts as property.

“This is one of those many examples where the law really gets its power by giving people the knowledge that it exists,” said Washington state Sen. Jamie Pedersen, the sponsor of the law passed there this year.

The promise of privacy companies offer users has led to heartache and frustration for the families of account holders who have had to go to court for the right to access their relative’s emails and photos.

In 2005, Yahoo turned over more than 10,000 pages of emails in a CD to the family of Lance Cpl. Justin Ellsworth, a Marine from Michigan whose family went to court for the material.

But others have not been successful.

The family of John Ajemain in Massachusetts has been unable to get his emails from Yahoo after his death in 2006. And in 2012, Facebook quashed a subpoena from the family of Sahar Daftary, a model who fell to her death from an apartment building in Manchester, England, in 2008.

Shooting at Chicago train stop leaves 1 dead, 1 wounded

CHICAGO – Chicago police said a shooting outside a Southwest Side train station has left one man dead and another injured.

Police said officers responding to a fight about 7:30 a.m.

Sunday found a 20-year-old man shot in the neck and a 24-year-old man wounded in the buttocks. Police said the 20-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooting occurred outside the California station on the Chicago Transit Authority’s Pink Line. Police said no pedestrians were being allowed in the station and that trains were bypassing it.

Police said they had no one in custody.

Trump tax revelation adds to week of political challenges

NEW YORK – Ever defiant, Donald Trump and his Republican allies embraced a report Sunday that said the New York businessman might not have paid federal income taxes for nearly two decades after he and his companies lost nearly $916 million in a single year.

The unexpected revelation punctuated a week of missteps and aggressive personal attacks from the Republican presidential contender, with early voting already underway in some states and Election Day quickly approaching.

If there was a bright spot to the explosive story about his taxes in The New York Times, Trump supporters said, it was that it may shift the national conversation away from Trump’s weeklong feud with a former beauty queen he called “Miss Piggy” as he shamed her for gaining weight, and his unfounded suggestion Hillary Clinton may have cheated on her husband.

“He’s not been on message,” said Barry Bennett, a former Trump adviser. “A week was wasted where he could have been talking about the heroin epidemic and jobs and ISIS. All the money in the world can’t get that time back.”

The mounting challenges injected a new sense of urgency into Trump’s White House bid with the next presidential debate a week away.

Trump is deciding whether to use the debate stage to attack Clinton’s role in the infidelities of her husband, former President Bill Clinton’s. “I know our complex tax laws better than anyone who has ever run for president and am the only one who can fix them,” Trump tweeted.

Clinton made no mention of Trump’s taxes during her events Sunday in North Carolina.

But the Democratic presidential nominee reposted a tweet from Trump, who wrote in 2012 that “HALF of Americans don’t pay income tax despite crippling govt debt ... .”

“Now that’s pretty rich coming from a guy who paid $0 in taxes for 18 years,” Clinton tweeted.

Before The Times story put Trump’s taxes back at the center of the campaign, the candidate and his backers were engrossed in an effort to change the subject from his feud with 1996 Miss Universe, Alicia Machado, and his middle-of-the-night tweets that directed voters to what he called her “sex tape.”

The online taunts referred to footage from a Spanish reality show in 2005 in which Machado was a contestant and appeared on camera in bed with a male contestant. The images are grainy and do not include nudity, although Machado later acknowledged that she was having sex in the video.

On Saturday night in Manheim, Pennsylvania, Trump imitated Clinton’s stumbles as she left this year’s 9/11 memorial service ill with pneumonia and questioned her loyalty to her husband, former President Bill Clinton.

“Why should she be, right?” he asked.

“Why should she be?”

In a story published online late Saturday, The Times said it anonymously received the first pages of Trump’s 1995 state income tax filings in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The filings show a net loss of $915,729,293 in federal taxable income for the year.

FBI should disclose how it was able to hack cellphone After the San Bernardino attack in December that killed 14 people and wounded 22 others, the FBI hired a private hacker to unlock the iPhone of one of the two dead terrorists. Perhaps the FBI learned some of Syed Rizwan Farook’s evil secrets.

But it also created unsettling secrets of its own.

The mysteries left over from the episode start with these: Who is the unnamed private party the FBI paid to break the smartphone’s security device? How much taxpayer money did the agency pay?

News organizations that have been stiff-armed by the FBI in their Freedom of Information Act request now are suing the bureau for answers.

We hope they succeed. The public should be able to know more about how the FBI cracked the privacy safeguards on the terrorist’s Apple phone.

This is about more than one investigation and one wrongdoer’s phone – it’s about the threat that the government’s ability to break into electronic devices could pose to anybody’s online privacy and safety, especially if the tools fell into the wrong hands.

As stated in the lawsuit – filed last week by the Associated Press, the Gannett media company and the Vice Media digital and broadcasting company – “Understanding the amount that the FBI deemed appropriate to spend on the tool, as well as the identity and reputation of the vendor it did businesses with, is essential for the public to provide effective oversight of government functions and help guard against potential improprieties.”

Of course, there might have to be limits on what civilians can know about law enforcement’s methods without compromising their effectiveness. But the proper limits almost certainly are fewer than government officials would claim.

Last winter, the FBI tried to force Apple to devise a way to unlock Farook’s work phone, while tech companies argued this would undercut the privacy of all smartphone owners. A day before a scheduled showdown in court, the FBI announced that it had hired someone to hack the phone.

The question remains whether the FBI had been bluffing, claiming it needed the power to compel private companies to cooperate with it when it really didn’t.

But first questions first. Americans should cheer the AP-led lawsuit.

To the Editor: The residents of DeKalb want an elected city clerk. They’ve said so twice over the past decade.

In a 2006 referendum, 62 percent of DeKalb voters chose to retain an elected clerk rather than switch to an appointed clerk; and in 2012, they voted again to retain the elected clerk with more than 70 percent of the vote.

The 70 percent translates to more than 9,000 votes. It’s a clear mandate. No elected official in DeKalb gets anywhere near this many votes.

However, if you look at what’s happened since 2012, you’ll see we’ve not had a single clerk candidate on the ballot in two elections, and have been served by an elected city clerk only 16 months out of the last 4½ years. That’s because, after that 2012 referendum, the DeKalb City Council took away duties, powers and almost all of the compensation from the office.

It was a big mistake, an ill-advised case of overkill.

Instead of providing the resources required to support it properly, the city gutted the office of the

clerk and gave over what remained to the tender mercies of the city manager. But it’s nothing that can’t be fixed, and the time to fix is now so voters can see good choices on the ballot for this important, at-large office in the spring.

Our group has begun a petition drive as a general call for action and to build awareness of what has happened. We’ve also developed a specific proposal that not only will make the clerk’s office more attractive to potential candidates, but also will restore its independence as a check on the excesses of other departments – and save some money in the next annual budget over the way things are done now.

SCENE Brown bag offers preview of Pumpkin Fest home tour DAILY CHRONICLE On Oct. 6, the Sycamore History Museum will offer a sneak preview of this year’s Pumpkin Fest Historic Homes Tour, featuring noted local historian Steve Bigolin.

This event, part of the SHM’s ongoing Brown Bag Lunch series, will feature an inside look into the people and the properties that will be showcased on this year’s tour. The program will be at noon at the Sycamore History Museum, 1730 N. Main St. in Sycamore.

Bigolin has been involved in local historic tours for many years and has helped put the Pumpkin Fest tour together for the past four years. He also is an avid collector of pictures and artifacts from historic properties around the county, so he will give an insider’s view of the featured locations.

Tour, attendees will get a glimpse into the “Restorations.” Some of the homes previewed include 631 W. State St., 18 Center Cross St., 625 DeKalb Ave., 813 Somonauk St. and 520 S. Main St. House walk tickets will be available at the SHM, Sweet Earth gifts, and the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce beginning Oct. 15 or at any location the day of the event. In addition, a volunteer training will be at 9 a.m. Oct. 22 at SHM for anyone interested in helping with tours and earning a free ticket.

Call the museum in advance to volunteer. The house walk is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 29.

The Brown Bag Lunch program takes place the first Thursday of every month at noon and is hosted by the Sycamore History Museum. The program is free and open to the public. Donations are welcome.

Historical-Genealogical Society to talk fires and fired-up people DAILY CHRONICLE Fires – fired-up people and burning buildings – will be the program topics at the DeKalb County Historical-Genealogical Society meeting Oct. 12 at the Oak Crest Retirement Center Little Theater, 2944 Greenwood Acres Drive in DeKalb.

Following a short business meeting beginning at 7 p.m., Denny and Kathy Sands of Shabbona will talk about Denny’s fired-up role as a delegate at this year’s Republican National Convention. Regardless of party affiliation, the insider view of a political con-

vention will be enlightening.

Retired firefighter Jim Lyon will then talk about the Sycamore Fire Department and some of the major fires in downtown Sycamore over the years. Film footage of the Masonic Temple fire taken by Ralph Joiner will be shown, as well as footage of the St. John’s Church fire, which was said to be the largest documented back draft. Lyon served the Sycamore Fire Department for 25 years and has a long family history in the fire service.

Genoa Scouts plan scrapbooking, crafting event Saturday

Cub Scout Pack 117 will host a 12-hour crop for scrapbookers and crafters from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Faith United Methodist Church, 325 S. Stott St. in Genoa.

Registration for the crop, a pack fundraiser, will begin at 7:30 a.m.

Eight-foot rectangular, 6-foot rectangular and 6-foot round tables are available for crafting on a first come-first served basis.

Cost ranges from $25 to $40. Cost increases $10 the day of the event.

Registration includes crafting space as well as pizza from Ski’s All American Pub and one drink for supper. Lunch is on-your-own, but event oranizers suggest Corner Grill (which offers delivery) as they are hosting another fundraising event for the Pack on Saturday and Sunday. Hunter education course scheduled in Genoa

Learn the basic principles of safe hunting at the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Hunter Education class. The next class will be at the Genoa Fire Station, 317 E. Railroad Ave. in Genoa.

Huskies’ offense has best game of season

jseverson@shawmedia.com MUNCIE, Ind. – Long after all the fans filed out of Scheumann Stadium on Saturday night, the lights from the field highlighted the constant drizzle falling to the turf.

For a moment, it was the Huskies’ 31-24 win – not the rain – that washed away a winless nonconference schedule.

“It’s always easier to practice after a win,” said senior linebacker Sean Folliard, who had 17 tackles and a key sack. “It’s easier to learn from film after a win, but in the end, it’s one win.”

Now the Huskies are undefeated in conference play and, more importantly, the offense is beginning to look like Northern Illinois again. During non-

conference play, the offense ranged from inconsistent to nonexistent.

However, in the win at Ball State, the Huskies got their run-game working, converted on third downs and had their playmakers make plays.

“Execution in critical situations and converting on third downs and stay on the field and the run game was working, and we were obviously throwing good, too,” Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey said.

Coming into the game, the Huskies (1-4 overall, 1-0 in Mid-American Conference West) had averaged 425 yards a game and 5.6 a play. Against the Cardinals, they had 411 of their season-high 653 yards of total offense in the first half alone and finished averaging 7.5 yards a play.

Continued from page 18 The obvious catalyst of the Huskies’ offensive emergence – dating back to the second half of the loss to Western Illinois – has been the play of senior quarterback Anthony Maddie.

Against the Cardinals on Saturday, Maddie had a big first half and finished 26 for 41 with 298 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 160 yards and a 75-yard touchdown.

His favorite target, of course, was senior Kenny Golladay, who had 13 catches for 184 yards and two touchdowns. While Golladay had garnered plenty of attention from opposing teams in the past, Ball State appeared to be fine with playing him primarily man-to-man.

“I was mostly just sursprised that they kept playing me man-to-man all game, and I get excited when they want to play me one-on-one,” said Golladay, who was targeted 23 times on the night.

Golladay came into halftime with seven catches for 112 yards and, despite the big numbers, he said there wasn’t much of a defensive adjustment in the second half by the Cardinals.

The Huskies also came into the game struggling offensively on third down – converting just 28 percent of attempts in the first four games.

However, they went 10 for 18 against the Cardinals, thanks partly to Mad-

die and Golladay. While the two connected on plenty of deep passes, they converted midrange third downs four times in the second half.

“We executed better on third down, and I think Kenny was a big part of that, which was good to see,” Carey said.

They faced two of their biggest third downs on the final drive of the game. Leading by a touchdown with 4:38 remaining, the Huskies were

The following play, Bouagnon broke off a 15-yard gain for another first down – their 30th of the game – and allowed them to get into victory formation and take a knee.

“Just get first downs, that’s what you got to do,” Carey said. “You want to keep the clock running, too. ... Just get first downs and keep the clock running.”

However, the Huskies still left plenty of points on the board against the Cardinals. They had a pair of fumbles – Golladay and tight end Shane Wimann – that gave Ball State good field position, and the Cardinals turned those two turnovers into 14 points.

Northern Illinois also had three drives that reached inside the Ball State 26-yard-line that came away scoreless – a pair of missed field goals

“That was really disappointing because Hagan makes those all the time,” Carey said. “He’s more upset than I am, so he’ll come back and he’ll start making them.”

CINCINNATI – Matt Szczur doubled home two runs with two outs in the ninth inning, and Miguel Montero followed with a homer as the Cubs finished one of their most successful seasons with a flourish, beating the Cincinnati Reds, 7-4, on Sunday.

With victory No. 103 in the books, the Cubs headed back to Wrigley Field for their first playoff game on Friday against the winner of the NL wild-card game.

The Cubs led the majors with their most victories since 1910. That’s no longer the reference point, however.

The postseason focus is 1908, the last time they won a World Series.

The final series at Great American Ball Park was more about personal milestones. Jon Lester failed to get his 20th win on Saturday, and Kyle Hendricks finished as the ERA leader at 2.13 on Sunday despite a ragged performance. He gave up four runs and six hits in five innings, forcing in one run with a bases-loaded walk.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Buffalo took advantage of sloppy, Tom Brady-less New England to hand the Patriots their first home shutout at Gillette Stadium, winning 16-0 Sunday.

It was the first loss of the season for New England (3-1), which was playing its final game before Brady returns from his four-game “Deflategate” suspension. The Patriots, who moved into Gillette Stadium in 2002, were last blanked at home 6-0 by the New York Jets in 1993 at Foxboro Stadium.

Tyrod Taylor connected with LeSean McCoy for a 7-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, Dan Carpenter added three field goals for Buffalo (2-2).

BRONCOS 27, BUCCANEERS 7: At Tampa, Fla., Paxton Lynch made his NFL debut sooner than expected, stepping in for injured starter Trevor Siemian to help the Broncos remain unbeaten with a victory over the Buccaneers.

Siemian left the game with two minutes remaining in the first half with what the defending Super Bowl champions described as an injury to his left (non-throwing) shoulder. He remained in uniform and watched the second half from the sideline, wearing a baseball cap while Lynch – the 26th pick in this year’s draft – finished the Broncos’ ninth consecutive win.

RAIDERS 28, RAVENS 27: At Baltimore, Derek Carr threw four touchdown passes, the last to Michael Crabtree with 2:12 left.

After the Ravens (3-1) rallied from a nine-point deficit in the fourth quarter to go ahead with 3½ minutes remaining, Carr directed a 66-yard drive that ended with a 23-yard strike to Crabtree in the back of the end zone.

Carr went 25 for 35 for 199 yards. Three of his TD passes went to Crabtree, who finished with seven catches for 88 yards to help Oakland (3-1) to its third road win.

FALCONS 48, PANTHERS 33: At Atlanta, Matt Ryan shredded Carolina’s defense, passing for a team-record 503 yards and four touchdowns, Julio Jones had 12 receptions for a Falcons-record 300 yards.

The totals by Ryan and Jones are the most ever allowed by Carolina.

One week after being held to one catch in a win at New Orleans, Jones had a 75yard scoring catch late in the game as Atlanta solidified its early hold on the NFC South lead.

JAGUARS 30, COLTS 27: At London, Blake Bortles threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as Jacksonville held off a furious Indianapolis Colts rally for the Jaguars’ first win of the season. The victory at a raucous Wembley Stadium

elevated Jacksonville into a tie with Indianapolis at 1-3 in the AFC South.

Andrew Luck led the Colts on three fourth-quarter touchdown drives to rattle the Jaguars’ nerves. But his fourthand-1 pass at the Jacksonville 49 with 1:36 remaining fell from the hands of tight end Dwayne Allen to preserve the victory for under-fire Jaguars coach Gus Bradley.

SEAHAWKS 27, JETS 17: At East Rutherford, N.J., Russell Wilson was sharp and efficient despite playing with a sprained knee, throwing three touchdown passes.

Wilson finished 23 of 32 for 309 yards while wearing a brace on his leg as the Seahawks (3-1) won at MetLife Stadium for the first time since beating the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl in 2014.

REDSKINS 31, BROWNS 20: At Landover, Md., Kirk Cousins threw three touchdown passes, including two to tight end Jordan Reed, and the Washington Redskins cashed in on several trips to the red zone.

The Redskins (2-2) scored four red zone touchdowns against the Browns (04) after going 3 for 14 in their first three games. Cousins connected with Reed for 8- and 9-yard touchdowns, Chris Thompson for a 5-yard score, and running back Matt Jones scored from 1 yard as part of his 117-yard performance.

TEXANS 27, TITANS 20: At Houston, Will Fuller had a tiebreaking 67-yard punt return for a touchdown. It was the first time Houston (3-1) played without its star defensive end J.J. Watt since the 2010 season. Watt, out for the season after back surgery, had started 83 straight games since being drafted in 2011. Fuller also had 81 yards receiving and a touchdown.

Tennessee (1-3) was driving with less than two minutes remaining, but Marcus Mariota’s pass to former Texan Andre Johnson on fourth down was broken up.

SAINTS 35, CHARGERS 34: At San Diego, Drew Brees threw two touchdown passes in the final 4 minutes, 50 seconds to rally the Saints to a stunning victory against Philip Rivers and the Chargers, who blew a 13-point lead by committing two crucial turnovers.

RAMS 17, CARDINALS 13: At Glendale, Ariz., Tavon Austin returned a punt 47 yards to set up Case Keenum’s 4-yard touchdown pass to Brian Quick with 2:41 to play, and the Rams improved to 3-1 for the first time in a decade with a victory over the Cardinals (1-3).

COWBOYS 24, 49ERS 17: At Santa Clara, Calif., Ezekiel Elliott ran for 138 yards and a touchdown and Dak Prescott threw for two scores to help the Cowboys overcome an early 14-point deficit to beat the 49ers (1-3).

BEARS’ OFFENSE SHINES IN WIN, but still a long way to go

Can Bears build off win over Lions next week against Colts?

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush The Bears needed a win in the very worst way to avoid losing the interest of their fan base for the season, to stay relevant in the NFL with 12 games still to play and, most of all, for themselves.

The question now is beyond giving the players and coaches a chance to enjoy their first taste of victory together. How much can we really read into Sunday’s 17-14 defeat of the lowly Detroit Lions?

Let’s go with the glass half-full first.

Regardless of the opponent, when a rookie in his first start produces the way Jordan Howard did – 23 carries for 111 yards, averaging 4.8 yards a carry – you have to take notice.

Head coach John Fox talked about what his performance meant to the team.

“Obviously, he has a positive impact,” Fox said. “We noticed pretty early on Jordan is a big back, and we knew that when he came out of Indiana University. The thing we didn’t know is the quickness of his feet and the vision he has.

“I think he’s outstanding, and we will ride him pretty good moving forward.”

Veteran wide receiver Eddie Royal was just as critical as Howard to the Bears breaking into the win column, catching all seven passes he was targeted with for 111 yards, a 15.9-yard average and a long of 64 that set up the Bears’ second touchdown.

After the game, Royal preferred not to take all the credit.

“I got outside leverage, and it was a two-high look by the safeties so the middle was wide open,” he said. “[Brian] Hoyer made a great throw.

Next time, I’ll try not to get caught.”

Fox, too, was more than a little pleased with the performance of Hoyer and his coaching staff with Jay Cutler on the sidelines.

He has a winning record as a starter.

I think he’s adapted well,” Fox said. “I think Dowell Loggains and the offensive staff did an outstanding job coaching him up.”

There was good news and bad news from Kevin White. His second straight solid game in which he grabbed six catches for 55 yards gives him 19 catches on the season, a new record for a Bear in his first four NFL games.

The bad news is White left the game with an injury to his left ankle, the same leg in which he suffered the stress fracture last year that cost him the season, and there was no word on the seriousness of the injury after the game.

Beyond that, even with the glass

half-full, more analysis requires us to consider the following facts.

That the Bears managed 408 yards of offense, easily a high-water mark for the season, is a definite positive; but it is just 29 yards more than the Lions had given up on average to the 1-3 Colts, 1-3 Titans and 2-1 Packers.

The 114 yards rushing the Bears ground out are certainly satisfying, but we have to realize it just matched the 114.7 yards rushing a game Detroit allowed Weeks One through Three.

Should we celebrate the Bears’ offense, or should we be lamenting the fact the 17 points they tallied are well below the 28.3 a game the Lions were allowing coming into Soldier Field?

Finally, as enjoyable as Hoyer’s

performance might have been, it guarantees a quarterback controversy very much of Fox’s making when he refused to call it a given last week a healthy Cutler would get his job back.

Asked who’s up in Indy next Sunday if Cutler is healthy, Fox replied, “We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. I’d like to enjoy this win at least for a few hours.”

Fans will enjoy it a lot more if the Bears now show them in the coming weeks it’s something they can start to make a habit of with the 1-3 Colts and then 1-3 Jaguars up next.

Sustaining drives: Entering Sunday with the worst time of possession in the league, the Bears held the ball for 33:14, more than six minutes longer than the Lions. The Bears were balanced, with Howard rushing for 4.8 yards a carry and quarterback Brian Hoyer completing 77.8 percent of his passes, helping keep drives alive.

Third-down defense: The Lions were 4 for 12 on third down and 1 for 7 in the first half. The Bears’ DBs had tight coverage on Matthew Stafford’s receivers, making things difficult for the Lions to convert.

Pass coverage: The Bears picked off Stafford twice and sent him to his lowest passer rating since Week 5 of last season (56.8). Coverage was tight throughout the game, including CB Tracy Porter’s job on WR Marvin Jones before he left the game, and the open-field tackling that kept WR Anquan Boldin to only 31 yards on six catches.

Glenn’s pick: Having just entered the game for Porter, CB Jacoby Glenn read Stafford’s eyes on a third-and-one late in the first half. Glenn got the interception on the Lions’ miscommunication, keeping Detroit off the board.

Timu’s tackle: When the Lions had third-and-goal from the Bears’ 1-yard line to open the second half, LB John Timu was ready. Promoted from the practice squad this week, Timu timed the snap and shot his gap to the backfield to bring down RB Zach Zenner for a loss on the play, holding Detroit to a field goal.

Psoriasis not confined to the skin Dear Dr. K: My doctor thinks my arthritis and heart disease are connected to my psoriasis. Is this possible? I thought psoriasis was a skin condition.

Dear Reader: Psoriasis (pronounced so-RYEuh-sis) is named for an ancient Greek word meaning an itchy or scaly condition. It is classified as a skin disease, but psoriasis is the result of an immune system abnormality that can cause problems throughout the body.

With psoriasis, white blood cells of the immune system become overactive. They produce excess amounts of chemicals that trigger inflammation. The inflammation leads to abnormally rapid growth of cells in the skin’s outer layer. This causes plaques: raised, red patches covered with silvery scales on the elbows and knees – the classic sign of psoriasis.

But the effects of psoriasis are not always confined to the skin. The disease also can cause inflammation throughout the body.

This probably is the reason people with psoriasis have higher rates of various diseases that also are associated with a constant state of inflammation. These include diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and several types of cancer.

Nearly one-third of people with psoriasis develop psoriatic arthritis, which causes stiff, painful joints and other symptoms.

Several eye problems are more common with psoriasis, including conjunctivitis, blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids) and damage to the cornea.

When psoriasis involves only the skin, it often can be treated just by medicines applied to the skin. Very mild cases of psoriasis may improve with moisturizers and some sunlight.

But most people need other treatments: Ointments, gels or lotions. The most common are corticosteroids, which come in varying strengths. They quickly reduce in-

Phototherapy. This treatment uses carefully controlled exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, which helps slow the growth of skin cells. UV light combined with medicines called psoralens often is more potent than just UV light (a treatment called PUVA).

Systemic theray. If your psoriasis has caused more than skin problems, this can have implications for the kind of treatment your doctor may recommend. Treatments that fight inflammation in multiple parts of the body may be required. Medicines that do this include methotrexate, retinoids and cyclosporine.

Research in recent years has led to biologic agents that directly neutralize some of the body’s chemicals (called cytokines) that cause inflammation. They have proved very effective in severe psoriasis. Though they carry a risk of serious side effects, the benefits generally are greater than the risks.

Exercise and weight loss, which help fight inflammation, may help. Adopting other healthy lifestyle choices, such as avoiding tobacco and eating well, can help prevent health problems linked to psoriasis.

Dear Abby: A DEAR ABBY woman I’ll call Betty Jo works Jeanne in my office. We Phillips only are casual acquaintances.

We speak in passing when time permits, but she never has invited me to lunch with her or suggested any interaction outside the job.

About three months ago, Betty Jo mentioned she and her husband were planning a renewal of wedding vows and said she was going to invite me. In my mailbox at work, I found a poorly photocopied version of a formal invitation, with the following handwritten at the top in large block letters: “CASH GIFTS ARE CHEERFULLY ACCEPTED!” I did not plan on attending, since I felt if Betty Jo really wanted me, she could have at least sent me an original invitation to my home.

Two weeks ago, while knitting during my lunch break, Betty Jo came up to me and asked about the item I was working on. She then informed me since I hadn’t yet given her a gift, I could complete my knitting project and give that to her. Abby, I was flabbergasted. It’s a custom-designed angora sweater, a gift for a cherished friend.

I mumbled something about being “busy as a bee” with projects to complete, and since that day I have gone out of my way to avoid any contact with Betty Jo. I’ve even managed to find an office with a door that locks in which to take my breaks.

First, am I behind the times or is requesting money on an invitation a new trend? Second, why would this rude and clueless woman request such an elaborate gift from someone she barely knows?
