September too soon to begin voting

I’m just not ready to commit.

I know, I could go down to the county offices right now and just do it, make it official. But something in me just keeps saying, “What’s the rush? There’s so many things you haven’t seen yet.”

So, no, I’m not voting now. It’s just too early.

If you want to vote as soon as possible, go to the DeKalb County Legislative Center at 200 N. Main St. in Sycamore between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday and do it. It’s your right. You can vote Monday through Friday through Oct. 21 during those same hours there. On Oct. 24, four remote polling stations also will be open in Sandwich, Kirkland, on the south side of DeKalb and at Northern Illinois University.

Hundreds of people in DeKalb County already have voted. Some of them are partisans who publicly identify as Democrat or Republican. Others are snowbirds who plan to leave the area soon for warmer climes. Maybe some people are so eager to vote against – or for, I suppose – one of the two major-party presidential candidates that they simply can’t wait.

Sure, many of us feel we know enough about the presidential candidates – or at least, the two who have been allowed on the national debate stage – but odds are we probably don’t know enough about other races on the ballot.

The fact is, although Illinois law allows people to start voting 40 days before Election Day, the process still is geared toward people who vote later.

That includes us here at the Daily Chronicle. Our Election Central site will be going online soon, but it’s not ready yet. Even if it were live right now, the questions and answers would be only a snapshot in time – and any other issues that arise in the next five weeks would go unaddressed.

There also have been no candidate forums or any other public meetings that allow voters – and the local media – to see candidates answer questions in person about issues on the minds of voters. These public events can be very helpful in giving the public an idea who the candidates are, including their personalities and how comfortable they are discussing issues they will confront as elected officials.

I’ve changed my mind more than once about candidates whose in-person performance made it clear that they didn’t belong in office.

It’s good that people have ample opportunity to vote at their convenience. But voting so far ahead of time almost guarantees that you will have less information than the people who vote Nov. 8, or even a week earlier.

I’m not a member of one party or another, and I’ll be here shoveling snow with you this winter. I have the luxury of being relatively certain that I’ll be in town and able to vote on Election Day, and that’s when I usually show up to the polls.

Part of me likes being part of that mass acting-out of American democracy.

Besides, a lot can happen in five weeks. I’d hate for something to happen that would make me regret my vote before it is even counted.

There’s no divorcing your ballot, after all.

The story about early voting in DeKalb County that appeared on page 4 of Friday’s Daily Chronicle contained multiple errors. There are three contested DeKalb County Board races, one in District 2 and two in District 4. State’s Attorney Richard Schmack is a Democrat, challenger Richard Amato is a Republican.

Voters will not be able to register and vote on the day of the election – this plan was blocked by a federal judge this week.

im and Bobbi Hays knew nothing about bagels before making them their livelihood.

Ray Binkowski walked away from a mechanical engineering job to buy and run a gym.

Mohammed Labadi sleeps maybe four hours a night.

Such is life as a small business owner.

For the Hayses – who opened Barb City Bagels, 122 S. 1st St. in DeKalb, in December 2014 after careers in education – being the owners of a small business isn’t about amassing great wealth. It has become a way to help their children go to college – their sons, Benjamin, 21, and twins Aaron and Jacob, 19, are attending Moody Bible College in Chicago and are looking to join the ministry.

“A friend of mine who owns a business in another town, she always likes to say when people buy at a small business, you’re not only buying a product,” said Bobbi Hays, who lives in Cortland. “You’re helping to pay somebody to let their kid have dance lessons, or to be able to get the extra speech therapy they might need if their child has speech issues, or allow them to send their kid to college.

“It’s not just buying a product. I’m helping people be able to make a better life.”

Five years ago, Labadi opened The Huddle at 817 W. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb, a burger restaurant in a space tucked into the back of a strip of stores, and said he’s just now breaking even. A bright-green bumper sticker next to the front door reads, “Support Your Local Economy.”

Labadi graduated from Northern Illinois University with a degree in electrical engineering, before realizing a long-held dream of opening a restaurant, which he said began when he worked at a restaurant during college.

“It inspires you when you see locals doing well and creating jobs, and their business is prospering,” said Labadi, who lives in Cortland. “We want to do that. We want to do it. If we work together, we can create a great

A look into spending a week shopping only at small businesses There are plenty of small businesses in the area that pique my interest as I pass by, and I’ll think to myself that one of these days I’ll stop in and check it out.

More often than not, it never happens.

A lot of small business owners said they’ve heard that story before. Wouldbe customers say, “One of these days,” but before that someday comes, it’s too late. The place closes.

That’s why I decided for one week to only shop at local small businesses. The best I could, I would not go to a single chain business for seven days.

The truth is, the week wasn’t as expensive and cumbersome as I expected.

I only bought things if I really needed them. I often would pass by The Huddle at 817 W. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb and always wondered if it was any good.

Finally, I stopped in with my girlfriend for lunch on a Sunday afternoon, and it definitely had a college-town vibe – the modern music, a couch in the corner and a poster that lists the Huskies football schedule.

We told owner Mohammed Labadi, who was working the register, that it was our first visit, and he politely told us about nearly his entire menu – as if Mr. Rogers owned a burger joint.

DeKalb High School Principal Michele Albano found out about freshman hazing conducted by some of the seniors and decided she wanted to counter it with something more welcoming and inclusive.

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – New DeKalb High School Principal Michele Albano said she was shocked by a traditional hazing of freshmen this week. So she decided to counteract it with a positive reception for the school’s underclassmen.

Students arrived on campus Thursday to words of welcome, inclusion and encouragement literally scrawled on the pavement beneath their feet, an initiative – messages written by Albano herself – after some seniors earlier in the week reportedly heckled and chided freshmen.

“Regardless of the tradition, I must express my shock and extreme disappointment,” Albano wrote in a notice to parents. “Any negative action against another student is not what DeKalb High School or District 428 is about.”

She got word that on Tuesday, some of the school’s seniors formed “a gauntlet-type of line” for freshmen to pass

Albano didn’t like that.

amount of resources, with NIU and the students that are looking for internships and have ideas. We have people in DeKalb with the means to do something with those ideas.”

While some businesses start from scratch, Binkowski bought a previously established local gym and eventually got a new location and a new name – FitWorkz, at 1690 Sycamore Road.

Binkowski jokes that he spent five years pestering Paul Wright to sell him the Wright Athletic Club, before he finally got his wish in 2007. While studying mechanical engineering at Northern Illinois in the 1990s, Binkowski caught the fitness bug and lost more than 50 pounds. He sold his stake in a mechanical engineering company for the chance to own FitWorkz.

FitWorkz has been operating in DeKalb since 1978, changing hands and locations before settling on Binkowski’s shoulders.

He admits that taking over an established enterprise has its benefits – people know the brand – but it also puts pressure on the new owners to not be the ones who run it into the ground.

“With small business, every day there’s always that question: Am I going to be able to make it today? This month? This year?” said Binkowski, who lives in Sycamore and has written three health-related books, including “Eat By Color.”

“But at the same time, I think most small businesses owners just decide failure is not an option. It’s just the way it is. I’m going to

A number of freshmen were upset by the incident, some to the point of crying.

Some small businesses realize that they must adapt to the technological age. Binkowski recently announced his gym will begin to operate 24 hours, and he’s created online workouts for clients who don’t live in the area.

The Hayses use an iPad to process pointof-sale transactions and provide free Wi-Fi to attract college-aged clientele – a customer segment they said has grown almost 20 percent.

Labadi said his location close to campus is both a strength and a weakness. When NIU is in session, business is good. But in the summer, things slow down.

“It would have been much cheaper for me to close the business in the summer – much cheaper,” Labadi said. “I’d say it would be about 30 percent of what I lose, but I don’t want to do that for the sake of my employees that are here full time or part time and for the sake of the regular customers. You have to plan accordingly when you look at the whole year.”

At Barb City Bagels, they bake between 400 and 800 bagels a day, donating to leftovers to First Baptist Church of Sycamore.

While the company helps the community by giving the leftover bagels, Bobbi Hays said, the reliance on the community helps keep Barb City Bagels in business.

“If we all decided to help each other just a little bit more, maybe we’d need a little bit less of Uncle Sam,” she said. “Life is crazy and busy, and cities are big, but there’s something to be said for neighbor helping neighbor.”

But the event was “no big deal,” seniors such as Jose Vargas said. He didn’t participate in the hazing, as school officials dubbed it, but the 17-year-old said it happened to him when he was a freshman.

“It was blown out of proportion,” Vargas said. “I didn’t feel like it was such a big deal. It happens to everyone. It’s just to have fun ... for our homecoming week.”

The teen said the event is intended to get the freshmen to be more outgoing, talk to the seniors and trust them more.

He said the ninth-graders volunteer to participate.

“We can still have a tradition – that’s rich and meaningful and powerful – but one that welcomes everybody. I want to send a message of unity, that’s what we’re about,” Albano said.

Albano said no students were disciplined as result of the hazing, in part because too many of them were involved.

Continued from page 3 Later that night, we saw The Stage Coach Players’ 126 S. Fifth St. showing of “Into the Woods,” not knowing what to expect in terms of crowd size. As a lover of the arts, I was nervous we’d be the only ones in the theater.

It turned out to be sold out. We were both disappointed and proud – we wanted to see the show, but it was nice to know it had such a strong backing from the community.

On a Thursday afternoon, I decided to finally stop at the DeKalb Farmer’s Market at Van Buer Plaza, which featured plenty of fresh produce from local farmers – and where I got some of the best honey I’ve ever had, from Shabbona-based Papa’s Natural Honey. It was so good that I went back an hour later to buy more.

Of course, the fact that the experiment was limited to a week made things easier. Most of my experiences were with food-oriented businesses. There were plenty of important items such as gasoline, internet and my cellphone that I wouldn’t know how to begin to not use a national company.

Not only that, but what about clothes, pet supplies or even batteries?

There is definitely a comfort in going to a national chain because, more often than not, you know what you’re going to get.

It’s also worth noting that sometimes the big-name chain stores are owned by local franchisees.

However, in the span of a week, I had found several independent small businesses that I know I’ll want to go back to because the product and service were that good.

Most importantly, I felt as though I had made a difference as a consumer.

I’ll still go to the big chains, but it’s important to remember to do business at DeKalb County’s mom-and-pop stores more often.

They are our neighbors and friends who took a financial risk to make DeKalb a better place.

MARY J. ANDERSON

Born: May 2, 1929 Died: Sept. 24, 2016

Mary J. Anderson, 87, of Genoa died Saturday, Sept.

24, 2016, at Prairie Crossing Living and Rehab Center in Shabbona.

She was born May 2, 1929, in Decatur, the daughter of Henry and Alveda Nash. She was married to George E. Anderson.

Mary and her husband farmed the family farm in Mayfield Township for more than 30 years. She was a wonderful homemaker and loving mother who will be missed dearly.

David Ernest Baie, 61, of Hinckley, IL, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones Sept. 22, 2016. David was a family man with a caring heart, someone always willing to lend a hand to get the job done, and a well-respected member of his community. His enthusiasm for life and generosity will always be remembered.

David was born Nov. 8, 1954, the youngest of four children, to Ronald and Katherine (Bahl) Baie, in Sugar Grove, IL. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hinckley, IL. As a young man, David was a gifted athlete, playing football, basketball and baseball in his high school career first at Kaneland High School and later at Hinckley-Big Rock High School, where he graduated in 1972.

David went on to earn his associate degree from Waubonsee Community College in 1974.

Early on, he worked locally learning car-

pentry skills and went on to create a fulfilling career becoming a skilled ironworker in local Union 393. His positive attitude, motivation and dedication set him apart as a respected leader, earning him the position of foreman for R&R and M&I Steel. David was truly grateful for the many lasting friendships he had made with his fellow ironworkers and co-workers throughout his career.

Above all, David was wholeheartedly devoted to his wife and children. On July 17, 2003, he married his soulmate Janis Mach (Hoffman) and proudly gained a family of two stepdaughters, Jenna and Jorie. David would often comment how grateful he was that God put him on this earth to be matched up with his wife and daughters. He regarded fatherhood as the most important role a man could have, and gave advice in his last days that people “should experience being a parent, if at all possible, because in my experience, it makes your life complete ... full with happiness.”

David’s spirituality and sobriety were an integral part of his life. He was a man of faith, believing in the strength and power of Jesus Christ’s love and the beauty and peace that would await him after his passing.

David is survived by his wife Janis (Hoffman); stepdaughters Jenna (Steve) Pelsor of Sugar Grove and Jorie Mach of Hinckley; his mother Katherine (Bahl) Baie of Hinckley; sisters Joanne Alfredson (Sonny) of Hinckley and Rhonda (Steve) Woodrick of Sycamore; uncle Gerald Bahl of Hinckley; and many nieces and nephews who will miss him greatly.

David is preceded in death by his infant daughter, Jacqueline Joan, who was stillborn Dec. 8, 2003. A celebration honoring David’s life will be held Oct. 15 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 12760 Lee Road, Hinckley, IL. Family will be there to receive friends at 10 a.m. with service starting at 11 a.m. The Rev. Donald Balgeman will officiate. Honoring David’s wishes for cremation, a burial of ashes will be immediately after the service at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery.

Eddie Arndt, 81, of Malta, IL, passed away Thursday, Sept.

29, 2016, at Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb. Born May 8, 1935, in Belvidere, IL, the son of Paul and Helen (Corey) Arndt, Eddie married Noel Edgar on Dec. 26, 1957, at the First Congregational Church in DeKalb.

Eddie graduated from DeKalb High School, Class of 1953, and from the University of Illinois Class of 1957. Upon graduation he enlisted in the Illinois National Guard. In 1958 he started his dream of becoming a farmer on 160 acres near Esmond, IL. In 1961, he and Noel moved to the farm near Malta where he spent the next 56 years.

Eddie attended the Malta United Methodist Church, and was active on many boards and committees. He served many years on the Malta school board, was a director on the Farm Bureau Board, the University of Illinois Extension Council, the DeKalb County Pork Producers, and the Federal Land Bank Board.

He was a trustee for the Malta Township and also for the Malta-DeKalb Drainage District.

Eddie also was a DeKalb Brand seed dealer for 30 years. He was honored to receive the Pork All American Award for the State of

Illinois and later was recognized by “Prairie Farmer” magazine as a Master Farmer.

Eddie loved farming with all the ups and downs that came with it. Traveling became a great interest beginning with a yearly drive to Colorado to visit Noel’s grandfather. He so enjoyed planning trips and seeing new places.

Eddie’s real joy was his family. Celebrating holidays and birthdays with Andy, Ed and the grandchildren was a highlight each year.

Eddie is survived by his wife, Noel; sons, Andy (Julie) Arndt, DeKalb, Ed (Darla) Arndt, Malta; four grandchildren, Amanda Arndt, Willits, CA, Corey (fiancée Abby Wylde) Arndt, Sycamore, Katie and Austin Arndt, Malta; three stepgrandchildren, Matt (Jane) Herrmann, Sycamore, Mark Herrmann, DeKalb, Jennifer (Mike) Schlesner, DeKalb; four stepgreat-grandchildren, Lukas, Levi, Jaxon, Olivia; two brothers, Paul (Judy) Arndt, Burr Ridge, IL, Jim (Abbie) Arndt, Clare, IL; one sister-in-law, Judy Edgar, Rockford, IL; several nieces; and one nephew.

SYCAMORE – Police are seeking information about a man suspected of stealing a large amount of baby formula from a Sycamore grocery store.

DeKalb County Crime Stoppers seeks information about two baby formula thefts by the same person from Jewel-Osco, 220 W. Peace Road, Sycamore. The first theft happened June 26, and the second theft occurred Sept.

2, according to a news release.

On June 26, the man was seen leaving in a 2015 or 2016 silver Ford Focus hatchback.

The suspect in both thefts was described as white, wearing a gray driving cap and gray athletic pants that had a white strip down the side.

During the June 26 theft, the suspect is seen wearing shoes with red laces.

Investigators don’t know the man’s motivation for stealing baby formula, Sycamore police Cmdr. Mike Anderson said.

Baby formula sells for $1 or more

an ounce and is an attractive target for thieves.

In August, a Florida couple was convicted in a multimillion-dollar baby formula theft ring.

The husband and wife recruited others to steal formula, which they then sold and shipped all over the country through an online business called Formula Mom, according to news reports.

In Los Angeles, two brothers were arrested in August on suspicion of stealing $50,000 worth of baby formula from warehouses, according to media reports.

Some organized crime rings steal baby formula to be used as a cutting agent for drugs such as cocaine and heroin, according to the Retail Association of Nevada.

Anyone with information about the crimes, the items taken or the people involved is asked to call DeKalb County Crime Stoppers at 815-895-3272. Callers do not have to give their names.

Crime Stoppers will pay a cash reward of up to $1,000, and callers can remain anonymous.

Regional school board will vote on annexing properties to D-427

DeKALB – The DeKalb Regional Board of School Trustees on Monday will consider a request from several property owners who want to deannex their property from DeKalb School District 428 and join Sycamore School District 427.

The hearing will be at 6:30 p.m. in the Blank Slate Room of the DeKalb County Community Outreach Building, 2500 N. Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb.

Residents of 12 homes along Coltonville Road between First Street and the South Branch of the Kishwaukee River submitted the petition in April.

The homes have Sycamore mailing addresses but are within District 428’s boundaries.

Regional Superintendent Amanda Christensen said the board will decide whether to grant or deny the petition at the hearing based on two

overall considerations laid out in the Illinois School Code.

“The absolute primary concern is if it would be a benefit to the direct educational welfare of any students on those properties,” Christensen said.

No school-age children live on the properties, but the board will consider benefits for students who could live there in the future, she said.

The second consideration is the “community of interest,” or whether petitioners identify and engage more closely with DeKalb or Sycamore.

Illinois School Code lists other guidelines as well, including that board members cannot consider whether changing boundaries will increase property values.

The board had nine months by statute to act on the petition, and after an informational meeting in July, board members decided to take a vote during their next scheduled quarterly meeting, which is Monday, Christensen said.

Lesser-known symptoms of breast cancer Public perception that breast cancer is only identified by lumps detected through self-examination or routine mammography may prevent thousands of women from receiving an early diagnosis and the care they need. Although lumps are the most common symptom associated with the disease, women should recognize that breast cancer can produce additional symptoms.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure, one of the premier organizations for breast cancer research, advocacy and treatment, advises that the warning signs for breast cancer are not the same for all women (or men). Various changes in the breast and body can occur, including the following conditions.

Breast-size changes Many left and right breasts are not completely symmetrical, and women familiar with their bodies know that one breast is often slightly larger than the other. However, breast-size changes that occur out of the blue may be indicative of a medical problem.

Skin rash or redness Women who are breastfeeding can experience a rash on the breasts from an infection of breast tissue. But those who are not breastfeeding should be evaluated by a doctor if redness, irritation or rash appears.

Nipple changes Nipple discharge that starts sud-

denly and is not associated with breastfeeding can be indicative of cancer. Other changes to the nipples, such as pulling in of the nipple (inversion) or itchy, scaling skin on the nipple, should be brought to the attention of a doctor.

Changes to the skin Dimpling of the skin, peeling, flaking, or scaling skin can be a cause for concern as well.

Lumps elsewhere Cancerous tumors may not only be felt in the breasts. Breast cancer can spread to the lymph nodes around the breasts, and lumps may be felt under the arms.

Unexplained pain The Mayo Clinic advises that less than 10 percent of people diagnosed with breast cancer report pain as a symptom. But unexplained pain in an area of the breast should not be ignored. Breast pain that does not go away and seems to involve one area of the breast should be checked.

“The project went quicker than anyone could envision due to support from businesses, the community, school kids collecting nickels, dimes and quarters,” he said. “We raised $70,000 in two years.”

Kirk ads attacking Duckworth omit key facts

CHICAGO – In his fight to keep his U.S. Senate seat, Republican Mark Kirk has repeatedly criticized Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth’s service as director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs. His latest attacks come in two new campaign ads, which claim there was “shocking abuse” of veterans, manipulated wait lists and retaliation against “whistleblowers” under the Iraq War veteran’s watch.

But the ads leave out important context, including that two of three lawsuits against Duckworth by two employees leveling many of the complaints were thrown out of court, one judge dismissing the matter as “office backbiting.”

The one report of abuse involved employees yelling at a veteran, not physical harm. The race between Duckworth and Kirk could help determine whether Democrats retake control of the Senate, and Kirk is considered one of the GOP’s most vulnerable incumbents.

Here’s the story behind the ads:

Crisis pregnancy centers sue governor, Illinois agencies

ROCKFORD –Crisis pregnancy centers in northern Illinois have filed a federal lawsuit alleging that their employees’ freedom of speech and religious rights will be violated if the state forces them to give patients information about abortion services.

The Rockford Register Star reported the lawsuit was filed Thursday against Gov. Bruce Rauner and Bryan A. Schneider, secretary of the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

It was filed on behalf of Tri-County Crisis Pregnancy Center, The Life Center Inc., Mosaic Pregnancy & Health Centers, Dr. Tina Gingrich of the Maryville Women’s

Center, and the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates.

The 33-page lawsuit contended that on July 29 the governor signed into a law an amendment to the Illinois Healthcare Right of Conscience Act, which requires centers to speak with women who are inquiring about abortion and where to go to have the procedure. Enforcement of the amendment violates freedom of speech rights, freedom to exercise one’s religion and “constitutes discrimination,” the suit states.

Man charged with murder in U of I shooting

CHAMPAIGN – A Champaign teenager was charged with murder Friday in a shooting last weekend at a party near the University of Illinois campus that killed one person and wounded three others.

Robbie Patton, 18, surprised police by turning himself in late Thursday. A warrant had been issued for his arrest in the Sunday shooting that killed 22-year-old

WAIT LISTS

A state audit released in 2009 uncovered issues with wait lists at Anna between 2006 and 2008, during the time Mark Kirk when Duckworth was the agency director. Simms, who was responsible for maintaining the lists, was dismissed in 2009 largely because of the problems. During Illinois Civil Service Commission proceedings, the attorney general’s office said six veterans who were passed over for beds later died.

There’s no evidence that Duckworth was aware of problems with wait lists before the audit; the report notes that auditors discussed concerns with administrators in May 2009 – three months after Duckworth left. Illinois veterans’ homes are skilled nursing homes, not hospitals, so the situation differs from the federal VA scandal, where veterans died while waiting for doctor appointments and tests or treatment.

Judge denies new-trial motion in murder case

WAUKEGAN – A judge has denied a motion for a new trial by a suburban Chicago woman who was convicted in the 2009 death of a toddler in her care.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Lake County Judge Daniel Shanes on Friday rejected the argument from Melissa Calusinski’s attorneys that new X-rays reveal that 16-month-old Benjamin Kingan of Deerfield didn’t die from a skull fracture caused by Calusinski but from a prior injury.

LAWSUITS

Butler and Goins filed a federal lawsuit against Duckworth in 2009. A judge dismissed the case, saying federal court wasn’t the place to litigate “office backbiting or petty managers.” They filed another lawsuit in state court, but a judge threw out that case, too.

They then sued in Union County court. In June, the attorney general’s office, representing Duckworth, announced it had reached a settlement. The state would pay $26,000 to cover court costs, with no admission of wrongdoing.

A month later, the women said they never signed anything and didn’t agree with the settlement. Butler told the Associated Press she felt Duckworth was trying to tarnish the women’s reputations by continuing to tell people that their claims were false. By then, the women were coordinating with the Kirk campaign.

Alabama justice off bench for defying feds

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore was removed from the bench Friday for defying the U.S. Supreme Court on gay marriage, more than a decade after he was ousted for disobeying a federal order to take down a 2½-ton monument to the Ten Commandments.

The nine-member Alabama Court of the Judiciary suspended Moore without pay for the remainder of his term.

While the court stopped short of outright removing him as they did in 2003, the punishment has the same effect, ending his rule as Alabama’s top jurist.

The judiciary court ruled that Moore defied law already clearly settled by the high court’s Obergefell vs. Hodges ruling when he told Alabama’s probate judges six months later that they still were bound by a 2015 state court order to deny marriage licenses to gays and lesbians.

“Beyond question, at the time he issued the January 6, 2016, order, Chief Justice Roy Moore knew about Obergefell and its clear holding that the United States Constitution protects the right of same-sex couples to marry,” the court wrote in the unanimous decision.

They said Moore also flouted a federal judge’s order that enjoined the judges from enforcing Alabama’s same-sex marriage ban after the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision.

The 50-page decision indicated that a majority of justices wanted to completely remove Moore – not just suspend him without pay – but they lacked unanimous agreement.

Moore said the decision violates the standards of evidence and the requirement of a unanimous vote to remove a judge, and his lawyer announced an appeal to the Alabama Supreme Court.

The president of the civil rights organization that filed the ethics complaint against Moore in 2003 and 2016 praised the decision as a victory for the state.

“Moore was elected to be a judge, not a preacher.

It’s something that he never seemed to understand,” said Richard Cohen, of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

“My parting words are good riddance to the Ayatollah of Alabama,” Cohen said.

The Republican judge has long been a polarizing figure, known for conservative legal views that sometimes seem to mix with theology.

Soon after his first election as chief justice, he installed the boulder-sized Ten Commandments monument in the rotunda of the state judicial building. Moore called the federal judge’s order to remove it unlawful and said it infringed on his right to “acknowledge God.”

Engineer in N.J. crash has yet to be interviewed

HOBOKEN, N.J. – National Transportation Safety Board investigators held off questioning the engineer in the deadly Hoboken train crash because of his injuries Friday and struggled to lift clues from the train’s black box recorders.

Authorities want to know why the NJ Transit commuter train with engineer Thomas Gallagher at the controls smashed through a steel-and-concrete bumper and hurtled into the station’s waiting area Thursday morning. A woman on the platform was killed, and more than 100 others were injured.

NTSB vice chairwoman T. Bella Dinh-Zarr said the board, the lead agency in the investigation, has been “in touch” with Gallagher, but “unfortunately, as you may know, he was injured, so we’re scheduling the interview with him.”

She said blood and urine were taken from him and sent for testing, standard procedure in train crashes.

However, a government official said that investigators from one of the other agencies taking part in the probe interviewed Gallagher three times Friday.

The official, who was not authorized to discuss the case and spoke on the condition of anonymity, would not disclose what Gallagher said but described him as cooperative.

Meanwhile, the NTSB retrieved the event recorder that was in the locomotive at the rear of the train but hasn’t been able to download its data and has gone to the manufacturer for help, Dinh-Zarr said. The event recorder contains speed and braking information.

The NTSB also hasn’t been able to extract a recorder from the forward-facing video camera in the train’s man-

gled first car, Dinh-Zarr said. She said the wreckage cannot be safely entered yet because it is under a collapsed section of the station’s roof.

Investigators were also reviewing security video from the station, setting out to inspect the nearby tracks, and gathering records on the crew members’ training, scheduling and health, Dinh-Zarr said.

The engineer, conductor and brakeman “have been very cooperative,” she said.

Gallagher, 48, a NJ Transit engineer for about 18 years, was pulled from the wreckage, treated at a hospital and released. Authorities have given no details on his injuries.

“The one thing we know for sure is that the train came into the station too fast. Why that is, we don’t know,” New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said. “Was it error by the engineer? Did he have some type of medical emergency or circumstance that rendered him unable to control the train? Was there some equipment failure that didn’t allow him to slow down?”

Gallagher’s union, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, said it could not comment because it is taking part in the investigation. The other parties to the investigation are the Federal Railroad Administration, NJ Transit and two other railroad unions.

Witnesses said they did not hear or feel the brakes being applied before the crash. Authorities would not estimate how fast the train was going before it hit the bumper at the end of its track.

But the speed limit into the station is 10 mph.

Bumpers are meant mainly to denote the end of a track, not to stop a fast-moving train, said David B. Clarke, who runs the Center for Transportation Research at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

WASHINGTON – Hackers have targeted the voter registration systems of more than 20 states in recent months, a Homeland Security Department official said Friday.

The disclosure comes amid heightened concerns that foreign hackers might undermine voter confidence in the integrity of U.S. elections. Federal officials and many cybersecurity experts have said it would be nearly impossible for hackers to alter an election’s outcome because election systems are very decentralized and generally not connected to the internet.

The official who described detecting the hacker activity spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity. It was unclear, the official said, whether the hackers were foreign or domestic, or what their motives might be. ABC News earlier reported that more than 20 states were targeted.

The FBI last month warned state officials of the need to improve their election security after hackers targeted systems in Illinois and Arizona. FBI Director James Comey told lawmakers

this week that the agency is looking “very, very hard” at Russian hackers who may try to disrupt the U.S. election.

The Homeland Security Department has stepped up its outreach to states and localities, but it is up to them to ask for help. So far, 21 states have expressed interest in a general “cyber hygiene” scan of key websites – akin to ensuring that windows in a home are properly closed, according to another Homeland Security official directly involved in securing local elections who also was not authorized to speak publicly about ongoing efforts.

The FBI has detected a variety of “scanning activities” that are early indications of hacking, Comey told the House Judiciary Committee this week.

The FBI held a conference call Friday with the local officials who run elections in the battleground state of Florida. Meredith Beatrice, a spokeswoman for Secretary of State Ken Detzner, called it an “informational call related to elections security,” but a person on the call who requested anonymity said authorities had seen evidence of someone probing a local elections website.

Clinton in a landslide – of endorsements

NEW YORK – “A clear and present danger to our country.” ‘’Xenophobia, racism and misogyny.” ‘’Beneath our national dignity.”

Those aren’t excerpts from attack ads by Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

Those are longtime Republican newspapers disavowing Donald Trump.

If newspaper endorsements equaled victory, Clinton would be in line for a historic landslide. She has been endorsed by dozens of papers ranging from such expected backers as The New York Times to such once-certain GOP advocates as The Dallas Morning News, the Arizona Republic and the Cincinnati Enquirer, which on Sept. 23 called for “a leader who will bring out the best in Americans, not the worst.”

On Friday, USA Today ended its tradition of not taking sides and published an anti-endorsement, contending that Trump “lacks the temperament, knowledge, steadiness and honesty that America needs from its presidents.” The paper didn’t back Clinton but advised readers to “Stay true to your convictions.” The same day, The San Diego Union-Tribune endorsed Clinton – the first Democrat it has endorsed in its history.

Trump, meanwhile, is supported by far fewer publications. They include a paper owned by son-in-law Jared Kushner (the New York Observer) and the National Enquirer, a tabloid whose parent company is run by Trump friend David Pecker and whose content usually focuses on celebrity scandal.

Trump scorned the negative editorials Friday, tweeting that “The people are really smart in cancelling subscriptions to the Dallas & Arizona papers & now USA Today will lose readers! The people get it!”

“I don’t read USA Today,” he said later to WZZM13 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, “It’s not much of a newspaper as far as I’m concerned.”

If Clinton’s overwhelming advantage among editorial boards mirrors the revulsion Trump has inspired from officials in both parties, the endorsements also might illustrate the decline in newspapers’ power to shape opinions and the strength of Trump’s anti-establishment appeal. Polls show Clinton trailing in Texas, Arizona and Ohio despite the unexpected support of GOP papers. During the primaries, the venerable conservative paper, the New Hampshire Union Leader, endorsed Chris Christie, only to have the New Jersey governor lose the state decisive-

ly, drop out and back Trump. The Arizona Republic favored John Kasich in the state’s GOP primary, but Trump won easily, and the Ohio governor finished fourth.

“Newspaper endorsements don’t have nearly the impact they used to,” said Mark MacKinnon, co-host of Showtime’s political show “The Circus” and a longtime adviser who has worked with former President George W. Bush and Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the GOP’s 2008 presidential candidate. “There are just way too many other sources of information for voters today.”

“They are just part of the wave,” says political historian Rick Perlstein, who is in the midst of a multivolume series on the rise of the conservative movement and has written in depth about elections of the 1960s, ’70s and beyond. “They don’t start anything, and probably didn’t determine much – but betoken a widespread disgust in the air.”

Readers might not let editorials tell them how to vote, but they care enough to respond. Dallas Morning News editor Mike Wilson recalls a group of about a dozen people demonstrated against the endorsement across the street from the paper. Wilson went down to talk with them. In a series of tweets, he described a discussion that began angrily but settled into a serious dialogue. “I got a few words in and persuaded zero people,” he tweeted.

Wilson said he has received some messages from Clinton supporters thanking the newspaper for the editorial, but hasn’t heard that it changed anyone’s mind. “They’re not really meant to end arguments; they’re meant to start discussions – and this one certainly did that,” he said.

“One of the reasons we exist is to take editorial positions on things that can improve lives in our community,” he said. “That is one of the core functions of a newspaper.”

Peter Bhatia, editor and vice president of audience engagement at the Cincinnati Enquirer, said he knows that the impact of editorial endorsements has lessened. “The days of people taking the endorsements of an editorial board and going into the polling place with them are pretty much long gone,” he said. But he still considers it an important obligation. The newspaper’s editorial board came to consensus pretty quickly so they decided to get it out.

As anticipated, some readers lashed out. Bhatia said he received some 150 angry emails and there were some canceled subscriptions.

MEXICO CITY –The sons of imprisoned drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman likely were behind a brazen ambush Friday on a military convoy using grenades and high-powered guns that left five soldiers dead and 10 wounded, officials said.

The attack in Mexico’s northern Sinaloa state left two military vehicles completely burned out and dead soldiers scattered across a highway.

It apparently was launched to free a wounded drug suspect being transported in an ambulance guarded by the convoy.

“Up this point, we are not certain about this group, but it is very probable that it was the sons of Chapo,” local military commander Gen. Alfonso Duarte said.

The predawn ambush was the worst attack on military personnel since 2015, when drug cartel gunmen in the state of Jalisco shot down an army helicopter with a rocket launcher, killing 10 people.

Friday’s attack on the outskirts of Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa state,

was unusual for the Sinaloa cartel, which Guzman headed until he was rearrested in January.

Some believe his sons now are running the gang and have changed the rules of engagement long practiced by the father, who kept a low profile until last year. However, others said “El Chapo’s” longtime partner, Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, is in control.

The fierceness of the attack suggested that whoever was traveling in the ambulance escorted by the convoy was a high-ranking member of the cartel, or a person of interest to the gang.

“These groups acted with cowardice, in a premeditated manner, and the carried out the attack with weapons, with grenades,” while the soldiers had only automatic weapons, Duarte said.

Duarte said the attack was launched to free the suspect, whom he identified as Julio Oscar Ortiz Vega, although he acknowledged the name might be a pseudonym.

Duarte said the wounded man had been picked up by soldiers following a gunfight in Badiraguato, Guzman’s hometown.

Thumbs-up to homecoming Thumbs-up: To homecoming. Both Sycamore and DeKalb high schools threw spirited parades through their local downtowns this week, and tonight students will attend dances at their respective schools, perhaps with dates who devised elaborate proposals to ask them to go. It’s good to see local young people showing off their creativity and talents, and finding some joy in their journey through high school. We hope all have a fun and safe time.

Thumbs-up: To voters. For the roughly 200 people who cast ballots in the first days of early voting at the DeKalb County Legislative Center this week, the election already is over. Voting in Illinois begins 40 days before Election Day, which this year is Nov. 8. If you’re going to be out of town or just know how you’re going to vote in this election, polls are open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 200 N. Main St. in Sycamore, Monday through Friday. If you’d rather vote in a location more convenient for you, polls will open at the DeKalb Township building, Northern Illinois University, Kirkland City Hall and Sandwich Fire Station starting Oct. 24. Thumbs-up: To helping local children in need have a happy Halloween. The Halloween Costume Club, a local nonprofit, is asking people to donate new and used Halloween costumes of all sizes.

There are three drop-off locations for donations: Kishwaukee YMCA, 2500 Bethany Road, Sycamore; the Sycamore Public Library, 103 E. State St.; and the DeKalb Public Library, 309 Oak St. Items, including accessories such as hats and wigs, can be donated at these collection bins through Sunday.

Over the past three years, the group has provided more than 800 costumes to those in need. If you have any costumes that still have another season in them – or want to buy one for a child in need – make a donation that will help make the holiday special for a child.

Thumbs-down: To a rocky start to the football season for the Huskies. The Northern Illinois University football team fell to 0-4 on Sept. 23 with a shocking 28-23 loss to Western Illinois (3-0) at Huskie Stadium. Western is an FCS school, but the Leathernecks have a good team – they came into the game ranked No. 13 in the FCS, whose teams compete in a year-end tournament rather than in bowl games. With the Huskies’ season off to such a rocky start and rivals schools already notching some quality wins, their streak of six consecutive Mid-American Conference West Division titles seems to be in serious jeopardy. Let’s hope Coach Rod Carey can find a way to turn things around as they open MAC play today at Ball State in Muncie, Indiana.

Bogus jury bill goes down drain Good riddance to judicial rubbish.

Taxpayers in each of Illinois’ 102 counties can breathe just a little bit easier thanks to a court decision that saves them from an unwise, unwanted, unaffordable and unfunded state mandate.

Two years ago, a lame-duck General Assembly threw a bone to trial lawyers by reducing the size of juries to six members and ordering county officials to raise jurors’ pay.

On Thursday, the Illinois Supreme Court unanimously overturned the legislation, holding that it violates the Illinois Constitution that guarantees citizens a 12-member jury. Taxpayers stand to save a bundle as a result.

The decision stems from a Cook County civil case in which Associate Judge William Gomolinski concluded late last year that the six-member jury edict violates Article 1, Section 13 of the 1970 Constitution.

The language at issue states, “The right of trial by jury as heretofore enjoyed remains inviolate.”

The key phrase there is “as heretofore enjoyed.”

Judge Gomolinski, first, and the state high court, second, each concluded that the phrase “as heretofore enjoyed” included a right to a 12-member jury.

“This court has long interpreted the phrase ... to mean ‘the right of a trial by jury’ as it existed under the common law and as enjoyed at the time of the adoption of the respective Illinois Constitutions,” Chief Justice Rita Garman wrote for the court.

Garman wrote at length about both the history of common law as it relates to jury size as well as about the debate on the issue during deliberations on the 1970 state constitution. Based on both, Garman concluded “jury size is an element of the right that has been preserved and protected.”

Noting that legislators’ decision to increase the pay of jurors went hand in hand with their decision to reduce the size of juries, Garman said the court had no choice but to declare the legislation “entirely invalid.”

Increasing juror pay raised hackles among county officials statewide because it dramatically increased

costs without providing the funding to pay those increased costs. On its face, the legislation appeared to be another mindless decision by ignorant legislators to force increased costs onto another level of government.

But as is often the case in Illinois, the real story regarding jury size and pay was mostly hidden from public view.

This bill came out of nowhere in December 2014, approved after brief deliberations over three days on party-line votes. Democrats favored the bill while Republicans opposed it.

It was, in brief, another exercise of extraordinary power by Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan. The Chicago Tribune reported at the time that the legislation was a gift to trial lawyers as a reward for past and future campaign contributions.

Trial lawyers favor six-person juries because their research shows they award more generous cash judgments than 12-member juries.

Although touted publicly as a measure to reward and encourage jury participation, the legislation actually was a prime example of insider politics.

Nonetheless, it raised a juror’s pay to $25 for the first day and $50 for each subsequent day. At the time, Champaign County paid jurors $10 a day, Ford County $15 a day and Douglas County $25 a day. Vermilion County paid $20 for the first day and $30 for each subsequent day.

Given the severe budget constraints many counties faced, the extra costs posed a severe burden, one now that will be lifted.

The court’s decision, however, does raise a vexing question. What about all those cases decided with a six-person jury? Given that the court has ruled a 12-person jury is a fundamental right, are cases decided by a six-member jury now open for review?

The legal system doesn’t need this headache, and it wouldn’t have it if politics didn’t trump policy in the General Assembly.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Here’s the ‘why’ for supporting Trump

To the Editor: I would like to respond to Don Henderson’s letter “Questions for Trump supporters start with ‘why?’ ” (page 15, Friday’s Daily Chronicle).

The “why” is: We don’t like Trump the man, but he is the only candidate who pledged to protect the American worker from having his job shipped offshore and then being replaced by cheap labor from some low-wage Third World country. This is the question the political establishment desperately wants to avoid being discussed.

The establishment likes to select its preference for president in the primaries, and let the public vote on one of its two choices in the election. It’s like owning both horses in a two-horse race. This year it was supposed to be a choice between Jeb Bush and Hillary Clinton.

Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump threw a monkey wrench into this charade. The establishment was able to cheat Sanders

out of the nomination, but Trump prevailed on the strength of his populist message.

Hillary Clinton is the establishment choice, and the corporate-owned mainstream media is shilling for her 24/7. To avoid discussion of the devastating economic impact that “free trade” and open borders have had on American workers, they smear Trump and his supporters with the “nativist,” “xenophobic,” “bigot” and “racist” slime words.

It won’t work.

If Trump stays on message and avoids the rhetorical gaffes he is prone to, he will energize millions of people who haven’t voted in decades and win in a landslide.

Support available for Alzheimer’s families

To the Editor: I am writing this to share my experience as the caregiver for a loved one with Alzheimer’s. No one wants to hear the words, “Your loved one has Alzheimer’s.”

Unfortunately, more and more families today are dealing with this terrible, debilitating disease. As their caregiver, you feel as though it is both your duty and responsibility to take care of your loved one at home.

What we don’t realize is that this disease not only devastates your loved one, but it also begins to break down the health of the caregiver. Reaching the point of making a decision to place your loved one in a facility is as painful as hearing they are diagnosed with this disease. The guilt one feels after making the decision never goes away.

Your life becomes a roller-coaster ride.

You accept it, you feel good in knowing you made the best decision for your loved one, they are safe and well cared for. Then comes the plunge into guilt, which turns into a constant battle. We cannot handle this journey alone. We not only need the love and support of family, but the support of others going through the same situation.

There is an Alzheimer’s support group that meets from 1 to 3 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of the month at the Elder Care Services building, 1701 E. Lincoln High-

way, DeKalb. This group is specifically for caregivers taking care of a loved one with Alzheimer’s. Everyone in this group has a loved one in a different stage of the disease.

We meet together to share, support and encourage each other. If you have a loved one diagnosed with this disease, I encourage you to attend our meetings.

When this group first was started, they met only once a month. But it didn’t take long to realize one meeting a month was not enough support.

I also would like to mention that if you are unable to attend one of our meetings, Lincolnshire Place, 710 Vellagio Drive, Sycamore, has a support group that meets at 5 p.m. the second Tuesday of the month, and another group that meets at 10 a.m. the fourth Thursday of the month.

I implore you, if you are in need of support in caring for a loved one diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, please attend one of these support groups.

Something’s wrong with me.

I watched Monday’s presidential debate. But what I heard was different from what Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton seemed to say.

When Clinton said, “I want us to invest in you,” what I heard was, “I will spend your money better than you will.” Also, I heard, “I will spend lots of your money!”

When Trump said our economic problems are China’s fault, what I heard was, “Blaming China wins me votes.”

When Clinton told Trump, “My father ... printed drapery fabrics,” what I heard was, “Donald, you are a spoiled rich kid.”

When Trump replied, “My father gave me a very small loan,” I heard Trump saying, “Anything less than $200 million is a pittance.” (It’s actually not clear what Trump received from his dad. Trump claims it was $1 million; others say $200 million. Anyway, is a million dollars a “small” loan”?)

When Clinton said, “I’m going to have a special prosecutor ... to enforce the trade deals we have,” I heard, “Kiss my ring and pay my foundation if you want your trade deal approved!”

DeKALB – Jordan Gandy saw daylight, and instinct took over.

The DeKalb sophomore defensive back picked off Morris quarterback Ricky Del Favero on a fourth down in DeKalb territory late in the fourth quarter with the Barbs up one point, returning it for a score as DeKalb won, 34-27.

Had he taken a knee, DeKalb (5-1, 3-0 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) would have been able to run out the clock against Morris (4-2, 1-1). It didn’t matter, as Morris’ last-ditch drive ended with a pair of sacks by Jacob Perkins, and the Barbs were able to sew up at least a share of the conference crown.

“I was thinking score all the way, but I’ll know next time to go down,” Gandy said.

DeKalb coach Matt Weckler said it was a teachable moment for a young player after a huge play.

“We were trying to get him to go down, because he goes down, we kneel on it, the game’s over,” Weckler said. “For us, it’s just a learning situation for a young guy that made a play in a big situation and played through with adrenaline, trying to score like he normally would want to. But in that situation, you have to get down.”

Morris took over with 2:51 left on its own 46 down, 28-27, after forcing a punt by the Barbs after a three-and-out.

They had a third-and-1 on the DeKalb 31, but a false start and a sack set up a fourth-and-10 on the 35. Del Favero went deep and was picked off by Gandy.

Morris coach Alan Thorson said he thought his team had a good chance to take the lead on that drive.

“We always think we have a chance to win,” Thorson said. “I have a lot of confidence in these boys. That’s all we can ask for – our defense got us the ball back and we got the first down and felt real good.”

DeKalb led, 28-7, after a scoreless third quarter, but Morris ran off a 10-play, 83yard drive spanning the third and fourth quarters – the team had only 34 yards through three quarters – to recapture some momentum after a 15-yard scoring run by Michael Feeney, and Daniel Baggett blocked the kick for the Barbs.

went 50 yards in three plays, capped by an 8-yard run by Michael Gerischer.

The 2-point conversion failed, and the Barbs led, 28-19.

“We made some changes at halftime, but I think it was just our execution,” Thorson said. “It’s kind of more on our effort. Our kids were playing how we’re capable of playing. If we play like that, I think we can beat anybody. Not that we’ll win every game, but I think this team is good enough to hang with a lot of teams.”

The Barbs then fumbled an onside kick return, and seven plays later, Feeney was in the end zone on a 13-yard

score. This time Feeney ran in the conversion, and Morris was down, 2827. Feeney finished with 76 yards and the two scores after only five yards through the first three quarters.

Derek Kyler threw for 126 yards for DeKalb, all in the first half – he was 0 for 3 with a pick in the second half. Delvin Williams ran for 69 yards against a Morris defense that had given up only 44 points total entering the game.

The game was played in a light but steady rain, and Weckler said that took its toll on the DeKalb offense.

“The rain hindered us, but at the same time we didn’t do a good job up front,” Weckler said. “Their guys are aggressive, and they’re a big, good football team. They were 4-1 for a reason.

They showed what they could do in the trenches and beat us there.”

The Barbs scored on their opening drive, not facing a third down and facing second downs of 2, 1, 1, and 1 yards on the drive, capped by a 1-yard run by Williams.

After a three-and-out by Morris, DeKalb struck again on a 31-yard pass from Kyler to Cole Tucker on a third-

and-11 with 3:29 left in the first.

“That first half I would give us an ‘F,’ without a doubt,” Thorson said.

“We played a terrible first half. Obviously, credit to DeKalb. They’re a great team, and we know that. But I did not like at all how our offense was playing. We weren’t moving the ball and we were opening up holes.”

A 66-yard kickoff return by Feeney set up Morris with a short field, and a penalty on DeKalb on fourth and 2 from the 9 helped prolong a scoring drive for Morris. After the penalty, Kameron Dransfeldt went 5 yards for a score to cut the lead to 14-7 with 39.2 seconds left.

But DeKalb scored on two of its next three possessions. On the first, Kyler hit Tucker on a 15-yard pass for a score early in the second. Later in the second, DeKalb faced a fourth-and-1 when Kyler faked the handoff and took off down the left sideline 26 yards untouched.

“Everything kind of fell into place the way we drew it up,” Weckler said of the first half. “Then in the second half, we kind of self-destructed. We couldn’t make blocks up front. We couldn’t get first downs. And we gave up too many points.”

The Spartans extended their lead to 13-0 with 3:05 remaining before halftime when quarterback Ty Sulaver fired a 52-yard strike to Bobby Cole.

“That was us taking a shot, and we have it on our things we can try to do,” Ryan said. “We wanted to take a shot and Ty (Sulaver) threw a nice ball to Bobby (Cole) and it was perfect, especially right before the half. That was big.”

Kaneland (3-3, 1-2) missed a field goal late in the second quarter, which was one of its only chances to get on the scoreboard.

GENOA – The Genoa-Kingston football team scored early and often against Rockford Christian on its way to a 40-6 Big Northern Conference victory Friday.

G-K (6-0, 6-0 BNC) marched down the field on its first drive of the game to give the Cogs a 6-0 lead over Rockford Christian (2-4, 1-4) after Aidan Simmons punched it in from 3 yards out.

G-K made big plays on the next three drives to open the flood gates.

On the ensuing drive after the Cogs’ touchdown, the Royal Lions were making their way deep into Cogs territory when Grayson Smith fumbled and the Cogs recovered. The fumble recovery led to an eight-play drive that was capped by Trey McCarty’s 10-yard touchdown catch.

Rockford Christian’s next play from scrimmage was picked off by cornerback Justin McNeal and returned it for a 45-yard touchdown to stretch the Cogs’ lead to 20-0 with 43.8 seconds left in the first quarter.

“Those big plays on defense help us a lot,” G-K coach Bill McCarty said.

“Rockford Christian was putting a nice drive together, and that was big to stop them there and break that momentum up with the fumble recovery.

Then on Justin’s interception, that gave us a 20-point lead right away, so those were big plays for us, absolutely.”

G-K’s running attack kept its dominance alive after the duo of Simmons and Dan Guardi accounted for four touchdowns. Simmons finished the

sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – It’s rather difficult to score any points if you rarely have the football.

Sycamore was awfully greedy with it, and certainly not in the sharing mood during its homecoming game Friday night, and that was exactly what the Spartans wanted to do on a rainy night as they blanked visiting Kaneland, 19-0, in Northern Illinois Big 12 East Conference play.

It was the first time the Knights had been shut out in 15 years.

“If you can take possessions away from them, that’s huge because they’re so explosive offensively, and Mother Nature helped us a bit in that sense,” Spartans coach Joe Ryan said. “I felt we ran the ball well, and our backup (Peyton Wiegmann) came in and ran really well tonight, too.”

Wiegmann also played linebacker and some special teams, and really never left the field.

“Yeah, I’m tired,” Wiegmann said.

“I just did what I was asked to do.

When I got the ball, I just ran as hard as I could and we kept moving it.”

But you can tell Genoa’s group of backs is very experienced. They tend to overload on one side, but they’ve proven they can run opposite to the strengths that they give you. That’s what makes it tough for coaches, because they make you play honest against them.”

HEBRON – Hiawatha senior Braden Watson let first-year coach Jason Keneway know moments before Friday night’s Northeastern Athletic Conference football game against Alden-Hebron that he was about to do something special.

Watson didn’t disappoint, as he secured the opening kickoff at the Hawks’ 5-yard line and didn’t hesitate on his way to a 95-yard run down the right sideline to jumpstart Hiawatha with a score.

“I just saw the open hole and I took it,” Watson said of his opening touchdown. “Everyone was jacked.”

Watson added a 40-yard touchdown catch from sophomore quarterback Ethan Hoffman, and the Hawks

shut out the Giants over the final three quarters on their way to a 21-6 NAC victory.

The win was Hiawatha’s first over the Giants in 10 years, according to Keneway. In the seven years of the NAC, the Hawks (4-2 overall, 4-2 NAC) never had defeated the Giants (2-4, 2-4) before Friday.

“We lost, 10-3, (to A-H) my senior year, and this has been a long time coming,” said Keneway, a 2010 Hiawatha graduate. “To get it on my first shot is pretty special.”

Watson finished with 104 rushing yards on 20 carries, adding the 40yard touchdown catch and 95-yard yard opening score for a total of 239 all-purpose yards. Josh Hakes led the rushing attack with 178 yards on 23 carries and a 1-yard touchdown run to give the Hawks a 13-0 lead with 5:57 left in the first.

“It was tough playing in the rain tonight,” Keneway said. “The ball is slick, but Josh was just tearing it up.

That’s impressive. He’s a workhorse for us, and he just keeps performing.”

“You’ve got to give (Sycamore) credit. It was their night,” Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly said. “Up front, they dominated the game, so all the credit is to them. We were still within striking distance at halftime, but we couldn’t put anything together so we’ll need to regroup and play a good Morris team (next Friday).”

Hiawatha answered, however, as Hoffman found Watson on a swing pass down the left sideline on fourth-and-18 for a 40-yard strike with 6:12 left in the first half, giving the Hawks the 21-6 lead.

Late in the fourth, Watson ran a trick play of his own – a fake punt run to essentially seal the victory on fourthand-1 near midfield.

“He told me yesterday in practice he was going to fake that punt, too, and I didn’t tell him to,” Keneway said. “He’s a [gutsy] kid, and he backs it up.

He’s a tough kid. I’m glad he’s on our side.”

Hiawatha’s defense was stout, holding the Giants to 169 yards on offense. Seventy-two of A-H’s 89 yards in the second half came on one play, a long run by junior Mason Mindham early in the fourth after the Hawks had just fumbled on A-H’s 3-yard line on the first play of the quarter.

Hiawatha totaled 335 yards, including 288 on the ground.

On defense, both Paul Rubelt and Harry Barrett recovered fumbles.

The win also was big for Hiawatha’s playoff chances as it looks to break a long postseason drought. The Hawks’ most recent playoff appearance was in 1987.

“This win has everyone emotional,” Watson said.

“Hopefully, it just rolls into next week. We’ve just got to keep moving forward.”

The danger here is Matthew Stafford is arguably the hottest quarterback in the NFL since the middle of last season with 26 touchdowns and only four interceptions in his past 11 games.

The Lions haven’t run the ball particularly well, but look for rookie seventh-round draft choice Dwayne Washington to get extended playing time.

The Bears’ best hope of slowing the Lions’ offense is up front, where they are average with this year’s firstround pick Taylor Decker at left tackle and last year’s first-rounder, Laken Tomlinson – who is from Chicago by way of Duke – at guard, Travis Swanson at center, Larry Warford at right guard and Riley Reiff at right tackle.

The Bears have struggled to pressure quarterbacks, but the Lions are just 21st in percentage of sacks allowed, and if the Bears can find a pass rush, that will be their best hope of neutralizing or at least slowing Stafford.

Shingles vaccine not for all

Dear Dr. K: You’ve written about who should get the shingles vaccine and why.

Are there any groups of people who should not get the shingles vaccine?

Dear Reader: I’m glad you asked because, yes, there are groups of people who should not get the vaccine.

Shingles is a painful skin rash, often with blisters, that lasts from two to four weeks. Its main symptom is pain, which can be quite severe. For some people, the severe pain of shingles continues long after the rash clears up. Called post-herpetic neuralgia, this condition can last for months, or even years. It can be quite debilitating.

Shingles is caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV), the same virus that causes chickenpox. VZV quietly remains in your body after you recover from chickenpox, but it can reactivate and cause shingles many years later.

Most adults age 60 years and older should get a vaccine called Zostavax. The vaccine helps prevent shingles – and it decreases the risk of post-herpetic neuralgia if shingles does occur. The vaccine also is approved for people ages 50 and older.

People generally should get the shingles vaccine even if they already have had shingles: The vaccine will reduce the risk of getting shingles again.

The shingles vaccine consists of actual living varicella zoster virus that has been greatly weakened. The weakened virus stimulates the immune system the same way infection with the regular virus would.

However, the virus has been so weakened that it cannot cause problems in people with healthy immune systems.

Still, some people should not get the shingles vaccine or should wait. This includes: • Anyone who has had a se-

vere allergic reaction to gelatin, the antibiotic neomycin, or any other component of the shingles vaccine. Tell your doctor if you have any severe allergies.

• A woman who is pregnant, or might be pregnant. Women should not become pregnant until at least four weeks after getting the shingles vaccine. That’s because pregnant women have a somewhat weakened immune system.

• Anyone with a moderate or severe illness (including a temperature of 101.3 degrees F. or higher) should wait until they recover before getting the vaccine. The vaccine is less effective when given to someone who is sick with another infection.

• A person who has a weakened immune system, and therefore might be made sick by the virus in the vaccine. People with weakened immune systems include those: – with HIV/AIDS or another disease that affects the immune system; – receiving treatment with drugs that affect the immune system (for example, prolonged use of high-dose steroids); – receiving cancer treatment such as radiation or chemotherapy; – who have cancer affecting the bone marrow or lymphatic system, such as leukemia or lymphoma.

Shingles is no fun – and post-herpetic neuralgia can be very debilitating. So the shingles vaccine has been a very good thing for most people, but not for all.

When North jumped to three clubs, South could have rebid a game-forcing three hearts, guaranteeing at least a six-card suit, but he knew that a slam was impossible, his hearts were self-sufficient, and his club ace suggested that three no-trump would not be best. So he signed off in four hearts.

West’s low-spade lead from length indicates at least one honor in the suit. So East can see three winners: two spades and one heart. Where is the fourth trick?

East can place the club ace with South; otherwise, his four-heart bid was overly ambitious. Also, from West’s opening lead, East knows that South started with three low spades.

If only the defenders could remove dummy’s trumps and cash those spades.

However, note that if East cashes the heart ace and plays his second heart, declarer will draw West’s last trump and run the clubs.

At trick two, East must shift to his low heart. Then South has no answer.
