The other day, while riding in the car, Hannah Jo asked to call Great-Grandma Dolly She liked it when Grandma would call her “Hannah Banana.” As they would hang up at the end of a phone conversation, Hannah Jo would blow kisses and hug the air. The cutest conversations.

It was difficult to tell her again that she couldn’t call Grandma anymore. Having to remind her that Great-Grandma was an angel in heaven was heart-wrenching.

My husband and I have been struggling to explain the meaning of heaven to our daughter.

A few weeks ago, Great-Grandma Dolly passed away. She lived a full life. Even at 86, she was spunky. She was a tiny Italian lady with a huge smile that would light up a room.

Great-Grandma Dolly was so proud to live in the same house where she raised her family. We tried to visit her every chance we got.

And when we did, she always made it special.

Plenty of food was served, and she always pushed you to eat more.

Her jokes were hilarious and, because she was so honest, it would make you laugh anytime she voiced her opinion. The best part was watching her play with her Hannah Banana.

It wasn’t until a few months ago that she was diagnosed with cancer. At her age, the doctors didn’t recommend surgery, and she opted out of chemotherapy. So it was only a matter of time before the cancer spread and, ultimately, took her life.

Great-Grandma Dolly was kept very comfortable.

Do you ever return to your alma mater for homecoming?

Although she wasn’t in any pain, it was sad to visit her at the nursing home. Grandma did not look like her vibrant self. Her hair was not its usual style. She was confined to a wheelchair. She didn’t have that spunk to her anymore. There even were times when she couldn’t keep her eyes open.

Hannah Jo knew that something wasn’t quite right and would say that Great-Grandma needed a nap.

At the wake and funeral, Hannah Jo ran up to the casket to touch her. She told my husband and I that Great-Grandma Dolly was sleeping. So we went with it, and added that she was sleeping in heaven.

I mean, what do you say to a 2½-year-old?

We tried to explain that heaven was way high up in the sky. My husband said she was an angel looking down on us and that Great-Grandma would always love her.

Honestly, I do not think she truly understands. However, she is certainly sad that she can’t call Great-Grandma anymore.

SANDWICH – A Sandwich man faces disorderly conduct and drunken-driving charges after police said they found him without pants in a car in the Harvey Creek Conservation Area in Sandwich.

DeKalb County sheriff’s deputies responded to the conservation area after getting a call Sunday afternoon about a man without pants in Sandwich Park District’s largest park.

When deputies arrived, they found Michael L. Brown, 62, of the 100 block of Oak Avenue, Sandwich, in a vehicle. Although he didn’t have pants on, there were no reports of lewd activity,

according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Officers said they discovered that Brown had a revoked driver’s license and had been drinking. He was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct, driving under the influence, driving while license revoked and illegal transportation of alcohol, the release said.

The vehicle was towed from the Michael park, and Brown was released on L. Brown an I-bond after being processed, according to the news release.

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Mother Nature tried to rain on the DeKalb High School homecoming parade Thursday, but the Barbs would not be denied as band members high-stepped, the crowd cheered and a sea of black and orange took over parts of downtown DeKalb.

“It’s the community coming together and supporting the Barbs, and supporting the athletics ... the clubs ... the band,” said Kim Keck, whose son marched as a freshman attendant in the parade. “It’s just a great atmosphere to see the community come out and cheer them on.”

Tractors, heavy duty pickup trucks and even cars with the top down rolled student-athletes, school club participants, candidates for homecoming court and others along the parade route.

The streets near the library, from Oak and Third streets, parts of Lincoln Highway and roadways leading onto the Clinton Rosette Middle School grounds were temporarily blocked off as the parade passed through.

The tennis, football, swimming, volleyball, soccer and cheerleading teams were among the participants. And about 80 seventh- and eighth-graders in the middle school band played the Earth, Wind and Fire classic “September” as they marched.

This year marks Martine Alger’s last time participating in the homecoming parade as a student. The 17-year-old senior and fellow members of the outdoor adventure club had a “Pirates of the Caribbean” float and joined other parade participants in flinging candy to the crowd.

“I’m not ready for it to be the end, but [I’m] going out on a really good note,” she said.

Prideful parents, excited children and other local residents who take in the parade as part of hometown tradition, waved from the curb as students passed by – everyone’s school spirit running high.

Maliyah Randle, a Clinton Rosette eighth-grader, ran along the parade route trying to catch up with the float her brother and the rest of his varsity football team were on. She and mom Michelle Euell ran late to get to the event but were not going to miss catching the Barb fever – and seeing junior Tyrese Dyson on that float.

“I love the enthusiasm, I love their team spirit. ... I love how the kids support each other,” Euell said.

Early voting underway in DeKalb County

SYCAMORE – A total of 181 people cast ballots Thursday on the first day of early voting at the DeKalb County Legislative Center, 200 N. Main St. in Sycamore.

Early voting for the Nov. 8 general election will be available at the legislative center from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, as well as during the same hours on weekdays from Oct. 3 to 23. Early voting will resume here and at other DeKalb County locations Oct. 24.

Other early voting places include the DeKalb Township Building, Northern Illinois University’s Holmes Student Center, Kirkland City Hall and Sandwich Fire Station.

People can register and vote on Election Day at any of these locations.

Mark Pietrowski Jr., chairman of the DeKalb County Board, and his wife, Kori Rempfer, voted early Thursday.

Both said they knew which candidates they wanted to vote for in advance because they have been paying close attention to the election. Pietrowski previously served as head of

the local Democratic Party.

“If you know who you want to vote for, there’s no sense in waiting,” Pietrowski said. “You might as well go early and make sure your vote is counted.”

Pietrowski is running uncontested for District 3 County Board; however, he said competitive local races such as the states attorney’s race should draw people out to vote.

In DeKalb County, incumbent Republican State’s Attorney Richard Schmack is facing Democratic candidate Richard Amato, while Circuit Clerk Maureen Josh and Coroner Dennis Miller, both Republicans, are running unopposed. There are only

two contested DeKalb County Board races.

Sharon Holmes, an election judge and former county clerk, said she was not surprised at the number of early voters because of this year’s presidential contest between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

“Two people were waiting in line to vote at 8:30 a.m. when we opened,” she said.

With the time frame for early voting extended to 40 days before the election, more people can vote at their convenience, and it reduces traffic on Election Day, Holmes said.

“I would say 75 percent of people who came in today will be out of state

within the next month,” she said.

Matthew Streb, a political science professor at NIU, said he predicts that voter turnout for the general election will be lower than in previous years in DeKalb County.

President Barack Obama was on the ballot for the last two presidential elections – and because he is from Illinois, residents of his state were more likely to take an interest in voting, Streb said.

“Illinois on a national level is not at play,” he said.

Clinton and Trump are reported to be the most disliked candidates in the past 10 presidential elections. That could discourage some voters from heading to the polls, Streb said.

“I don’t think [voter turnout] will be remarkable,” he said.

The 2012 presidential election saw a voter turnout of 72 percent in DeKalb County, while the 2008 presidential election saw 74 percent.

DeKalb County Clerk Doug Johnson said he was pleased to see everything running smoothly Thursday, and he expects a high turnout rate going forward.

“We don’t want to underestimate,” Johnson said.

Man heads to jury trial in shaken baby case

SYCAMORE – A DeKalb man accused of shaking his weeks-old daughter to death in August 2013 will have his case tried before a jury Tuesday.

Keith L. Terrell, 26, of the 700 block of North Annie Glidden Road, DeKalb, was charged with first-degree murder after his daughter, Kelis Terrell, died at a Rockford hospital. The offense typically is punishable with between 20 and 60 years in prison.

Terrell gave police several accounts of how the girl was injured, but ultimately told them that he shook her about 3 a.m., according to police reports contained in court records. The baby was crying and having trouble sleeping when he squeezed her tightly around her chest and shook her, according to police reports.

The girl suffered bleeding on both sides of the brain, as well as along the back, court records show. She also suffered swelling of the brain, retinal hemorrhaging, multiple rib fractures and bruising.

Jury selection in the trial is set to start Tuesday. Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert will preside over the trial. During a brief hearing Thursday before Judge William Brady, both sides said they were ready to proceed.

Prosecutors plan to call the girl’s mother, several medical experts and other witnesses over the course of the trial, which could last several days, court records indicate.

Terrell’s attorney, DeKalb County Public Defender Tom McCulloch, previously asked to suppress statements that Terrell made during a police interview, in which he confessed multiple times to killing his daughter. Stuckert denied that motion along with another defense motion that requested a hearing on whether medical testimony regarding shaken baby syndrome should be allowed at trial, according to court records.

Clues in Aug. on why Chicago is murder capital

August was the deadliest month for Chicago homicides in two decades, and an analysis shows that the blame lies with surging violence in a handful of the city’s most impoverished neighborhoods.

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Fourteen-year-old Malik Causey loved the way gangs took what they wanted from people on the street, the way members fought for each other, the way they could turn drugs into cash and cash into $400 jeans.

His mother tried to stop him. She yanked him out of houses where he didn’t belong. She cooked up a story about Malik punching her so the police would lock him up to keep him safe for a while.

Then on Aug. 21, Monique Causey woke to discover that her son had sneaked out of the house. Before she could find him, someone ended his life with a bullet to the back of his head a few blocks away.

“I went to him and cried and told him he wouldn’t make it,” Causey said.

“But this fighting, jumping on people ... this is all fun for them. This is what they like to do, you know? So how can you stop them?”

Malik Causey was one of 91 homicide victims in Chicago in August, the deadliest month in the city in two decades and the latest milestone for a metropolis becoming known for its murder rate. Already, killings here

Clinton makes it clear she knows many world leaders

CHICAGO – When it comes to world leaders, Hillary Clinton wants to be clear that she has lots of favorites.

The Democratic presidential candidate was asked for her picks Thursday, the day after third-party candidate Gary Johnson stumbled over the question in a TV appearance.

Johnson was unable to produce a single name of a foreign leader he respected during an interview on MSNBC. Clinton showed no such hesitance with reporters on her campaign plane in Chicago.

U.S. judge won’t stay ruling on Illinois voter registration

CHICAGO – A federal judge has denied an Illinois Attorney General’s Office request for him to reverse his own decision halting same-day voter registration at polling stations.

A Thursday hearing in Chicago federal court lasted just minutes as Judge Samuel Der-Yeghiayan told lawyers the request was denied.

He ruled earlier this week that the same-day registration option as written benefited

Suit: Cops pressured Laquan McDonald shooting witness

CHICAGO – A woman who

said she watched a white Chicago police officer fatally shoot a black teenager has filed a federal lawsuit that alleges police pressured her to change her account or “forget” what she saw.

Alma Benitez also said in the lawsuit that police detained her for hours and falsely told her the dashcam video contradicted what she said happened on Oct. 20, 2014, when officer Jason Van Dyke shot 17-yearold Laquan McDonald 16 times.

The lawsuit also alleges that after police saw Benitez trying to record the shooting on her cellphone, they tried to “view, extract and/or remove” that recording from her phone.

Attorney Amanda Yarusso said Benitez was apparently unsuccessful in recording the shooting because her phone was not charging properly. She said the phone was later stolen.

NEW YORK – CNN said Thursday that its analyst Corey Lewandowski, the former Donald Trump campaign manager, has cut all financial ties to the campaign and is no longer receiving monthly severance payments.

Lewandowski made light of the issue in an on-air announcement with anchor Alisyn Camerota.

“Forty days to go in the election, and now this is the breaking news of the day,” he said.

The Trump campaign confirmed that it had fulfilled all of its contractual obligations to Lewandowski, and it will be reflected in the next Federal Election Commission filing. The campaign had said last week that Lewandowski had been due severance payments until the end of the year.

Gary Johnson can’t name favorite world leader

WASHINGTON – Call it a brain freeze or another “Aleppo moment,” but Gary Johnson has stumbled again in his quixotic presidential campaign.

The third-party candidate, in a television appearance Wednesday, was unable to produce the name of a single foreign leader he respected. Prodded to come up with something, he finally settled on a former president of Mexico – but couldn’t recall his name.

U.N. warns of ‘abyss’ in besieged eastern Aleppo

BEIRUT – Syrian government forces continued their push into rebel-held districts of Aleppo on Thursday as international officials issued dire warnings of an ongoing humanitarian disaster in Syria’s largest city.

The U.N.’s humanitarian chief Stephen O’Brien told the Security Council that the conditions in eastern Aleppo, which is besieged and assaulted by all sides by government forces, had descended into the “merciless abyss of humanitarian catastrophe.”

Speaking to the Security Council via video link from Geneva, O’Brien painted a grim picture of the conditions in the war-wracked eastern part of the city, where at least 320 civilians including 100 children have been killed in the past week. An additional 765 have been wounded.

HOBOKEN, N.J. – A rushhour commuter train crashed through a barrier at the busy Hoboken station and lurched across the waiting area Thursday morning, killing one person and injuring more than 100 others in a grisly wreck that renewed questions about whether long-delayed automated safety technology could have prevented tragedy.

People pulled chunks of concrete off pinned and bleeding victims, passengers kicked out windows and crawled to safety, and cries and screams could be heard in the wreckage at the station just across the Hudson River from New York City as emergency workers rushed to reach commuters in the tangle of twisted metal and dangling wires.

The New Jersey Transit train ran off the end of its track as it was pulling into the station, smashing through a concrete-and-steel bumper. As it ground to a halt in the waiting area, the train apparently knocked out pillars, collapsing a section of the roof.

“All of a sudden, there was an abrupt stop and a big jolt that threw people out of their seats. The lights went out, and we heard a loud crashing noise like an explosion” as the roof fell, said Ross Bauer, who was sitting in the third or fourth car when the train entered the historic 109-year-old station, a bustling hub for commuters heading to New York City. “I heard panicked screams, and everyone was stunned.”

The train’s engineer was pulled from the mangled first car and hospitalized, but officials said he had been released by evening. He was cooperating with investigators, Gov. Chris Christie said.

Authorities gave no estimate of how fast the train was going. But the speed limit heading into the station is 10 mph.

The National Transportation Safety Board planned to pull one of the black-box event recorders Thursday evening from the locomotive at the back of the train. The device contains information on the train’s speed and braking.

But it wasn’t safe enough yet for investigators to pull the second recorder in the engineer’s compartment because of the collapsed roof and the possibility of asbestos in the old building, NTSB Vice Chairwoman Bella Dinh-Zarr said.

Investigators will examine

the engineer’s performance and the condition of the train, track and signals, among other issues, she said. They also plan to look into whether positive train control – a safety system designed to prevent accidents by overriding the engineer and automatically slowing or stopping trains that are going too fast – could have helped.

None of NJ Transit’s trains is fully equipped with positive train control, which relies on radio and GPS signals to monitor trains’ positions and speed.

The NTSB has been pressing for some version of the technology for at least 40 years, and the industry is under government orders to install it, but regulators have repeatedly extended the deadline at railroads’ request. The target date is now the end of 2018.

“While we are just beginning to learn the cause of this crash, it appears that once again an accident was not prevented because the trains our commuters were riding lacked positive train control,” said Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, D-N.Y. “The longer we fail to prioritize investing in rail safety technology, the more innocent lives we put in jeopardy.”

Clinton struggling to win over young voters

BOULDER, Colo. – John Morales was interning for Bernie Sanders’ campaign when the longshot Democratic candidate’s hopes started to fade in the spring. That’s when Libertarian Gary Johnson caught his interest.

In many ways Johnson and Sanders are ideological opposites. The Vermont senator is an opponent of foreign trade deals and won over many younger voters in the primaries by calling for enormous government spending to guarantee universal health care and free college tuition. Johnson, the former New Mexico governor, supports smaller government and the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

But he shares Sanders’ outsider, tell-it-like-it-is style, social liberalism and skepticism about military intervention overseas – attributes that have won over enough Sanders supporters to worry Democrats he could jeopardize Hillary Clinton’s chances in November.

Morales, a 22-year-old community college student and Army Reservist, is one of those converts – he’s now interning for Johnson.

“He agrees with about 70 percent of what Bernie was saying,” Morales said, adding that many of his friends who liked Sanders now are also drawn to Johnson. “I do believe that he’s got better ideas than Hillary and Trump,” Morales said.

With about a month until Election Day, Clinton still is struggling to win over young voters who twice helped elect Barack Obama.

“They’re not brand loyal to either party – they’re loyal to ideology and disruption of the status quo,” said Jill Hanauer, a Denver-based Democratic strategist whose firm has polled the

age group known as millennials. She said many don’t remember how protest votes for Green Party candidate Ralph Nader helped elect George W. Bush in 2000.

Clinton’s challenge with younger voters is part of what’s keeping the race close. A recent AP-GfK poll found Johnson pulling 14 percent of voters younger than 30, Green Party nominee Jill Stein with 3 percent and “other” with 6 percent. Clinton had the backing of 48 percent of young voters, compared with the 60 percent Obama notched in 2012.

Trump had 27 percent in the poll.

“Most of the supporters and volunteers who come in here are former Bernie people,” said Woodrow Johnston, the Las Vegas-based deputy director of youth outreach for the candidate.

“I think that for the most part people buy more into themes – or character – than issues.”

Clinton’s campaign plans to have popular surrogates, including Obama, first lady Michelle Obama and Sanders make her case. Their arguments to young people won’t directly target Johnson but instead will focus on the potential consequences of voting for a third-party candidate.

“If you don’t vote, that’s a vote for Trump,” Obama declared this week on the Steve Harvey radio show. “If you vote for a third-party candidate who’s got no chance to win, that’s a vote for Trump.”

Johnson’s support among younger voters has roiled the campaign, especially in Colorado, although he’s hurt himself with recent gaffes. This week he’s being mocked for being unable, in a TV appearance, to name a single world leader he admired. That awkward moment drew a comparison by Johnson himself to his “Aleppo moment” this month, when he didn’t recognize the besieged city in Syria.

TOWNVILLE, S.C. – When two volunteer firefighters rolled up to an elementary school shooting, they said they found only a wrecked black pickup truck at the playground. There was no gunman, and no one inside the truck.

Within minutes, however, they performed actions that led to them being hailed as heroes throughout their tightknit South Carolina hometown: One went inside to help treat the wounded and the other searched for the shooter.

“This was more than just another call to us. This incident occurred in the school where our children and the children of the community attend,” Townville Fire Chief Billy McAdams said Thursday during a news conference.

Authorities said the teen shot his father at their home before driving the pickup 3 miles down a country road to Townville Elementary School. There, he crashed the truck, got out and fired at a door as it was being opened for recess, authorities said.

Bullets struck two students and a first-grade teacher, and the building was immediately placed on lockdown.

Avery said staff saved lives by flawlessly implementing active-shooter training drills conducted with students over the past few years – at Townville Elementary, most recently just last week.

All six schools in the rural district went through annual drills in August, but a nearby carjacking prompted Townville officials to do it again, she said.

All district administrators trained just Monday on a new crisis response app put on their cellphones, which included an active-shooter scenario.

Although shot in the shoulder, the teacher “was with-it enough” to close the door, lock it and barricade the students, Avery said. “If he’d gotten in the school, it would’ve been a different scenario.”

The shooter then fired toward students on the playground but missed.

A teacher who heard the first gunshot was able to get those students safely inside, Avery said.

One of the wounded, Jacob Hall, 6, remained in critical condition Thursday.

The teacher who was shot in the shoulder and another student who was hit in the foot were treated and released from a hospital, officials said. The teen was arrested minutes after the shooting.

Ban, don’t license, donation boxes in city of Sycamore Sycamore city officials are considering imposing a licensing fee for donation boxes that companies place on private property seeking unwanted clothes and shoes.

It would be better not to allow them at all. There are already community nonprofit organizations that collect unwanted items; the owners of the for-profit boxes have proven less than reliable when it comes to collecting the donations; and people have been using the boxes as a dumping ground for items they want to discard.

Signs on the donation kiosks ask for clothes and shoes, but some people take that as a suggestion.

The boxes on the property that once was home to Brown’s County Market, at 403 E. State St. in Sycamore, were cluttered with all manner of discarded junk last week. Old tube TV sets, furniture and bags of general junk were left to sit in the elements for days, being rained on and generally creating a nuisance.

Dumping your junk in public ordinarily would be considered littering. But if items are left in an area where it’s advertised that unwanted items are welcome, it’s harder to make that charge stick, even if the litterbug is caught in the act.

Usually, they’re not caught in the act anyway.

Instead, local officials have to try to find whoever is responsible for the collection boxes and try to get them to deal with it. That’s not so simple, either, as contact information on the boxes often leads to no one.

Sometimes, owners of these boxes pay rent for the space they occupy on property. But, sometimes, collection boxes appear out of nowhere, as well.

That happened recently in DeKalb and Sycamore, when someone left large, cheaply made, bright-yellow boxes on properties in the area, including in the 400 block of West Elm Street, Sycamore police said.

Already, the community is adequately served by local service clubs, fraternal organizations and nonprofits that are responsibly collecting donated items, such as eyeglasses, clothes, shoes, housewares and other goods.

It’s possible to respect and allow those groups’ efforts while forbidding the fly-by-nighters. Those are the rules already in DeKalb, where these random donation boxes are not allowed.

Tracking down the owners of the boxes, and dealing with the junk that inevitably will be dumped on them again, is an unneeded hassle.

Rather than keeping records on who has a license to operate these for-profit collection points, Sycamore should just eliminate them and the future junk piles they will attract.

When dealing with Putin’s Russia, distrust and verify Surprising no one, the official investigation of the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over Ukraine in 2014 has concluded that Russia was behind the incident, which killed 298 people.

In so doing, the report also highlights one of the most powerful weapons in holding Russia to account, whether in eastern Ukraine or Syria: the radical transparency made possible by social media and the internet.

In addition to forensic reports, interviews and classified intelligence, the team of investigators drew on material surfaced by civilian open-source sleuths into the plane’s downing – images from Twitter, traffic camera footage and the like. The report establishes that, despite Russian claims to the contrary, the jet was brought down by a missile launcher sent from Russia into Ukraine at the request of pro-Russian rebels.

Three years ago, these citizen journalists helped bring the Syrian regime’s use of chemical weapons to wider public attention. In recent weeks, they also have delved into the attack on a United Nations-sponsored humanitarian aid convoy, using open-source information to counter Russia’s claims that it was not closely tracking the convoy and to document that the trucks were the target of an airstrike.

The threat that this kind of information poses to Russia is exactly why it has worked so hard to control the internet within its borders, and to aggressively attack its critics and spread disinformation in the wider world through its version of “hybrid warfare.” Russia’s denials are so bald-faced that they can take on a surreal quality, as when Russian officials claimed the humanitarian aid convoy spontaneously caught fire.

The best way to counter this kind of dissembling is to promote greater access to the internet and keep it as free as possible from meddling by autocratic governments. (This is a task that takes on new importance with the impending transition of internet governance away from what has, in effect, been U.S. trusteeship.) Lies may travel quickly in the Information Age, but providing more people with the means to unearth and share accurate information will help ensure that, eventually, the truth will out.

In the meantime, the conclusions of the MH17 report offer a useful lesson about dealing with Russia under Vladimir Putin: Russia’s version of the truth is whatever serves Russia’s interests. So any agreement with Putin, whether on Ukraine or Syria, always will be worthless without some means to enforce it.

The last time The Cincinnati Enquirer endorsed a Democrat for president was in 1916, when Woodrow Wilson was running for re-election during World War I. An interesting year, that one. It launched artist Norman Rockwell’s first cover for The Saturday Evening Post, which starred a disgruntled boy pushing a baby stroller as his buddies mocked him, and later gave birth to Margaret Sanger’s first family planning clinic in America, at 46 Amboy St. in Brooklyn, New York.

I’m not suggesting one led to the other, but wouldn’t Rockwell’s cover have been a fun birth control poster for the clinic? Two things make me smile at the thought of that: the imagined negotiations between Rockwell and Sanger, and the certainty of reader hate mail headed my way because I dare suggest such a thing.

The fun never ends here; I swear it.

Considering the Enquirer’s history of otherwise supporting Republican presidential candidates, it might have helped some folks if this year’s endorsement had begun with an editor’s note: “Maybe sit down for this one.”

But nope. The conservative editorial board just plowed right through convention with knee-buckling certitude: “The Enquirer has supported Republicans for president for almost a

Donald Trump, the Enquirer added, “is a clear and present danger to our country.”

I first found out about the Enquirer’s editorial from a friend in Cincinnati who texted six words to me before sunrise last Saturday: “God lives, and he’s in Cincinnati.”

It was an odd message from an avowed agnostic, but we are in those times, my friends.

Meanwhile, in Phoenix.

The Arizona Republic was founded in 1890, and not once has that newspaper endorsed a Democrat for president of the United States.

Until Tuesday.

Somebody at the Republic sure had a lot of fun writing this one: “Clinton retains her composure under pressure. She’s tough. She doesn’t back down.

“Trump responds to criticism with the petulance of verbal spit wads.”

And this: “We understand that Trump’s candidacy tapped a deep discontent among those who feel left behind by a changed economy and shifting demographics.

“Their concerns deserve to be discussed with respect.

“Ironically, Trump hasn’t done that. He has merely pandered. Instead of offering solutions, he hangs scapegoats like pinatas and invites people to take a swing.”

Add the recent endorsements for Clinton from The Dallas Morning News and the Houston Chronicle and one can’t help but wonder whether maybe there is a higher power after all and that it’s even mightier than the collective bankroll of Republican high-end donors.

How much does a newspaper endorsement matter?

Normally, not a lot. But these are not normal times.

Cue NPR: “A 2011 study pointed out one scenario where a newspaper editorial

board may make a difference: when a newspaper bucks its own tradition.

“In that study, Democratic endorsements from conservative papers seemed to have more influence than a Republican endorsement from that paper would, and the same concept applied to left-leaning papers endorsing conservative candidates.

“In the case of the 2016 election, it seems The New York Times may actually have less influence on its readership than The Cincinnati Enquirer, at least when it comes to endorsements. And the Enquirer is in a swing state.”

Yes, it is.

And I’m here in O-H (clap, clap) I-O to tell you that The Cincinnati Enquirer’s editorial is the talk of the Buckeye State right now. Much of the reaction fell somewhere between “how dare they” and “somebody grab me a chair,” but all of it is a whole lot more interesting than the usual yawn of a reception we see for editorial endorsements in these here parts.

Our season of slumber is over in the battleground state.

Wee Naturalist program starts Saturday for children ages 5 to 7 DAILY CHRONICLE University of Illinois Extension’s Wee Naturalist program is back.

Every first Saturday of the month, starting Oct. 1, the extension staff along with the efforts of the DeKalb County Master Naturalists will offer this nature program for children ages 5 to 7.

The program runs through the first Saturday in May. Participants will meet the instructors at the Natural Resource Education Center in Russell Woods Forest Preserve at 10 a.m. and the program will be approximately an hour to an hour and a half each visit. Russell Woods is located on IL Route 72, approximately one

mile west of Genoa.

Each month will be a different theme and the children will get a nature passport to have stamped to show how many programs they attended. The program will include a lesson with an activity, a related story, a craft, and a hike in Russell Woods. Each child needs to be with an adult or guardian for the program.

The fee is $3 per child and no charge for the attending adult.

In this year’s program, the children will learn about birds, snow, tracks, hibernation, food from nature, frogs and toads, and flowers.

While Morris (4-1, 1-0) has been good at preventing points, the Barbs (41, 2-0) have been good at scoring them – 35.2 points a game after a 49-31 win last week at Kaneland, their highest point total of the year.

Thorson said a lot of that is because

“It was amazing,” Williams said.

“When they called my number, I was ready to deliver for my team. I was just happy.”

He said that seeing the enthusiasm his teammates had when he was put into the game pushed him to perform even better.

“My teammates, they were more excited for me than anything,” Williams said. “So right now, my confidence level is very high and I’m ready.”

The game against Kaneland was the first extended action for Williams this year. Weckler said it took him awhile to learn the ins and outs of the DeKalb offense.

“With the intricacies of our offensive scheme, the kids playing in front of him had been playing his position for four years,” Weckler said. “For someone to come in, they’re going to be naturally behind just because of the number of reps they took at that position. He was doing what he needed to do, but he was thinking so much about what he needed to do in the scheme, he wasn’t able to go out there and be free and run the way he’s able to. Finally, this week and the last couple weeks he’s been getting gradually better and acclimated more with our scheme.”

It’s the Barbs’ passing game that catches the eyes of most coaches, however. Thorson called both quarterback Derek Kyler and receiver Cole Tucker among the best players at their position in the history of the conference.

Kyler has thrown for 750 yards this year while completing 61.5 percent of his passes for eight touchdowns and three interceptions. Tucker has 21 catches for five scores. With Tucker often drawing double coverage, slot receiver Zuerek Day has emerged as a threat, with 14 catches for 221 yards and three scores.

“For the last three years or so, DeKalb has been the team to beat in the conference,” Thorson said. “I have a ton of respect for these guys, and especially their coaching staff. They’ve done an amazing job in turning things around. Every game is a big game, but going up to DeKalb and facing them is a tough task.”

Sycamore coach Joe Ryan said he’s glad his team comes into the game having won last week.

“Any time you come off of a win, you feel better,” Ryan said. “There are still areas we need to improve upon, and we’ll work on that this week. It looks good in practice, but you have to see it on a Friday night.”

He added that the Spartans had a good week of practice, working on the little things – blocking, tackling and finishing runs – they need to do to win.

“All that adds up against good teams, and Kaneland is certainly a good team,” Ryan said. “If we don’t do those very well, than we wont be successful.”

Scouting Morris: The defense has been stingy this year, allowing only 8.8 points a game. However, it has allowed 34 of the 44 points surrendered this year in the past two weeks – in a 21-14 loss at Rochelle and last week’s home game against the Foxes.

Michael Feeney had a key interception return for a touchdown toward the end of the first half for Morris in the win. The Foxes led, 13-0, but Feeney’s pick gave Morris momentum heading into the second half.

Not only did he have two picks in the game, Feeney also is the team’s leading rusher with 396 yards on 42 carries, but only two touchdowns. Of the nine players with a carry this year, eight have a touchdown.

Morris coach Alan Thorson said his team will look to contain the high-powered DeKalb offense by maintaining long drives of its own.

“The offense has to make drives count,” Thorson said. “[The Barbs] are so explosive on offense, so we need to keep them off the field. Of course, that’s easier said than done.”

21 of 51 passes this year for 327 yards, four scores and a pick, as the Morris’ offense is geared toward the run.

DeKalb coach Matt Weckler said Morris’ 4-3 defense is effective when getting pressure from the defensive ends and penetration from the middle of the line, coupled with a “relentless” ball pursuit.

“The biggest thing for us to do is to maintain the line of scrimmage and use what they do well against them,” Weckler said. “They bring a lot of pressure and put a lot penetration to our offensive line, so we’re going to have to use that to our advantage – read them and trap them and do different things that benefit us against their aggressiveness.”

What’s at stake: If DeKalb wins, the Barbs would guarantee themselves at least a share of the NI Big 12 East title – their third in a row. Morris, with a win, would be in prime position to take the title as the only remaining undefeated-in-conference team.

“We mentioned that, that these were two of our goals – win No. 5 and a chance to qualify for the playoffs, although win No. 6 gets us in. So we talked about that a little bit,” Weckler said. “And we talked about what a win does in terms of the conference.

This is another one of those conference championship games, the same way we talked about last week’s game.”

DeKALB – As DeKalb football coach Matt Weckler said he sees it, the Morris defense has been opportunistic this year in forcing turnovers, which is one of the key factors in it allowing fewer than nine points a game.

At the center of that is Michael Feeney – who had two interceptions last week, including a momentum-changing pick-six before halftime, in a win over Yorkville.

As if his defensive prowess weren’t enough, Feeney also is the leading rusher for Morris as it heads into to DeKalb tonight for the Barbs’ clash between the Northern Illinois Big 12 East’s last two undefeated teams.

“They’ve been getting some key turnovers in crunch time, or when they need to make a turnover they get one,” Weckler said. “That comes from being around the ball and being in the right place at the right time.”

The Morris defense has allowed more points the past two weeks, at least compared to earlier in the year.

It gave up 10 points total in its first three games, but 34 the past two weeks – including a 21-14 loss at resurgent Rochelle in an NI Big 12 crossover game.

“I really like our defense,” Morris coach Alan Thorson said. “This group, missing the playoffs last year, they

“Jelantae was a little banged up – nothing major, but at the same time we wanted to limit his reps,” Weckler said. “By doing that, Delvin got more of the reps, and as we saw him get more reps, we said we’re going to use him this week and let Jelantae rest a little bit. Luckily for us, he was a great play and almost exceeded our expectations back there.”

“We’re hoping for that wind to kick up about, 7, 7:30 (p.m.), to about 20, 25 mph for about two hours,” Ryan said with a laugh. “(Kaneland coach) Tom (Fedderly) does such a great job with the passing game, and they’ve been doing a great job for years. They’re only one play away, always, from a big score. And that makes it tough.”

Although the forecast calls for winds of only about 10 mph, there is between a 50 and 60 percent chance of rain tonight when the Spartans and Knights clash at Engh Field in a Northern Illinois Big 12 East contest.

struggled somewhat against the pass last week in a 48-20 win at LaSalle-Peru in a conference crossover game.

Ryan said part of the problem was that the Spartans didn’t know who to prepare for, as Carey was hurt the week before and his status was not definite.

“We have to do a better job than we did last week,” Ryan said. “I think the kid picked us apart at times. We didn’t know which quarterback we were going to have for sure going into last week, but we know what we’re going to get this week, so, hopefully, we’ll be better with the coverage. And that starts with pass rush, too. If the guy has all day to throw, you can only defend so long. So we have to put some heat on him.”

The Spartans know they’ll be facing Jack Douglas, who leads the area with 814 passing yards this year. He has seven touchdowns and two interceptions while completing 54.4 percent of his passes for the Knights (3-2, 1-1).

Matt Noel (19 catches, 370 yards, four TDs) and Josh Marczuk (22-313-

2) have been his top two targets. The team also can run the ball, with Jonathan Alstott (87 carries, 315 yards, six TDs) and Trevor Jones (50-187-0) carring the bulk of the load.

Fedderly said that should weather be an issue, Alstott has put in the work this year that he could be ready to be in a starring role – if the conditions for throwing the ball are adverse.

“We’ve been getting him 15, 20 attempts a game,” Fedderly said. “Plus, we’ve been getting Trevor some work, so between the two of them, we want to keep getting a lot of production out of that position.”

The Spartans are led on the ground

by Chris Pawola, who has rushed for 461 yards and eight touchdowns this year. Ty Sulaver has completed 56 percent of his passes this year for 708 yards, six scores and two picks.

Last year, the Spartans were 2-3 entering their game against Kaneland, then won, 35-7, to kick off a four-game winning streak to make the playoffs.

The week before, they had won handily in a crossover game, just as they did this year. In 2015, it was a 35-0 win against Ottawa.

“We know since we started poorly, we did the same exact thing last year – started 1-3, finished 5-0,” Pawola said.

“So we know we can do it. Obviously, the teams we are playing are very, very good – Kaneland, Yorkville, Morris and Rochelle. But we think we’re really good, too. So it will be fun to see what we can do.”

Fedderly said the Knights are well aware of what happened last year – they entered the game at 3-2, then won four straight after the loss.

“We talked about it all week,” Fedderly said. “It’s a huge game for both of us. We know that regardless of their record, its always a huge game. We figure it’s going to come down to the last second.”

Pawola said the Spartans are hoping the road to another late-season surge starts Friday.

“Last week was a big momentum-builder for us because it’s been a tough stretch,” Pawola said. “It was a nice win there, it helped us. We’re pretty confident in what we’re doing, and we’re not focused on what their doing.

If we have our game plan ready and ready to execute, we should do well.”

YORKVILLE – There’s a phrase in soccer – “When in doubt, kick it out.”

That’s something that’s sometimes easier to say than do, and Sycamore found that out the hard way during Thursday’s Northern Illinois Big 12 East Conference game at Yorkville.

The Foxes defeated the Spartans, 5-1, avenging their lone loss of the season.

“The guys felt pretty bitter about that loss earlier, and last year Sycamore won conference,” Yorkville coach Andrew Johnson said. “We went down early, but then the guys slowed the game down and played the nice style they’ve been playing lately, and it worked.”

Yorkville (12-1-2, 3-1-1) was dominating play, but only clinging to a 2-1 lead in the second half before Sycamore (118-1, 3-2) could not clear the ball out of the penalty area.

A lot of that had to do with Yorkville junior Jackson Torok, who fought for and acquired possession before tapping a pass to senior Bailey Kish, who finished with 30:50 remaining in the game.

That insurance goal wasn’t needed,

but it certainly gave the Foxes additional comfort.

“It felt like the ball was sitting there for a while, and I just took it off of Jackson’s foot, spun around and put it in,” Kish said. “As an attacker, when you see their furthest guy back swing and miss at the 18, you know it’s your chance to take that, and that’s what I did.”

The Spartans had a single shot on goal in the first half, but they made the most of it as junior Matthew Coulibaly scored with 23:36 remaining before halftime.

Meanwhile, the Foxes had been peppering Sycamore junior keeper Patrik Smith with shots coming from Torok, Kish and senior Bobby Reichert before senior Wyatt McKibbon netted the equalizer with 11:47 left before the break.

Junior Mario Hinojosa set up McKibbon as his cross went to junior Jeremy Schwarz before landing near McKibbon’s feet.

ccutter@saukvalley.com STERLING – Sycamore coach Jennifer Charles knows all about Sterling senior and Northern Illinois recruit Kaylee Martin.

Charles is one of Martin’s coaches at Club Fusion, and the two caught up before Thursday’s Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference crossover game at Musgrove Fieldhouse. They chatted for 20 minutes before it was time to hit the court.

Although Charles was glad to see her pupil do well, it came at the expense of her Spartans, who lost, 25-20, 26-24.

“I’ve known Kaylee since she was 15,” Charles said. “It’s fun going against her. She’s a great player, and NIU is going to have an awesome time when she gets there next year.”

Martin, who set a Sterling school record with 28 kills Tuesday, continued a strong week with 16 kills and nine digs for the Golden Warriors (15-3-1). She

The Golden Warriors came back to take a 21-18 advantage and led 22-21 before senior outside hitter Maizy Larson stepped up with a pair of kills – tying on a tip and getting the lead on a spike from center.

All of Larson’s five kills came in the second set.

“We wanted to bring more energy into the game and try to push for the win,” Larson said. “You can’t push at the last second.”

Hunt led Sycamore with six kills and two blocks, while Rosemary Nelson also added six kills for the Spartans, who will head to the Hampshire Tournament on Saturday. Charles has been changing around the lineup recently in preparation for the tough event.

“Our girls played well. We, unfortunately, had errors at the wrong times,” Charles said. “For the most part, trying the new lineup that we did, I think we did really, really well. We’ve been improving for the past two weeks, so I’m very proud of them.”

Scouting the Giants: The Giants like to pound things out on the ground, with Mason Mindham leading the way with 46 carries for 261 yards and a touchdown. The team has attempted only 19 passes this year, with Brad Judson taking most of the attempts. He’s 8 for 15 for 90 yards, two interceptions and two touchdowns.

The Giants are coming off a brutal two-week stretch against state powers Hope Academy and Marquette, losing by a combined score of 99-0. They opened the year with a forfeit win against Rockford Christian Life, and also beat Mooseheart, 36-6.

By comparison, the Hawks lost, 55-0, to Marquette to start the year in Kirkland, but put up 20 points against Hope – tied for the most the Eagles have given up this year.

“We’ve got quite a bit of tape, and we’ve studied it and have had this game circled for a while,” Hiawatha coach Jason Keneway said. “I feel that we’ve got them narrowed down and ready to put it on the field Friday.”

What’s at stake: The Hawks’ path to at least five wins is made much easier with a win over the Giants. That’s a tall task, however, given the team’s history since playing as conference foe in 2007.

The Giants have outscored the Hawks, 302-88, in nine games, an average margin of victory of 23.8 points. Only once have the teams played within one score – a 10-3 game in 2009. There have been only two other games within two scores – a 30-18 battle in 2014 and a 29-14 game in 2008.

“We’re extremely excited for this week,” Keneway said. “It’s been a long time since we’ve beaten them – about 10 years. The kids are excited, and it’s been circled on the calenders for a while. We’ve had a few close games with them, but not enough to get a win.

This year we are absolutely ready to make it happen.”

After this week, the Hawks have two tough games against Westminster Christian and Luther North, and also winless Rockford Christian Life. To snap the team’s playoff drought – its last appearance in the postseason was in 1987 – the easiest path is with a win Friday.

“We’ve beaten teams we knew we could beat, but we’ve never gotten over that hump,” Keneway said. “This is a team we haven’t beaten in 10 years.

So clearly that’s a hump for us. If we can show, when we show we beat them this week, a lot of stuff will start changing for us in terms of our mindset and our culture as a whole.”

Braden Watson is still the area’s fifth-leading rusher, even though he’s been back at receiver for a couple of weeks. Josh Hakes has taken back the role after an injury, rushing for 172 yards and two scores on 30 carries.

“Every game is (must-win) from here on out,” Keneway said. “We’re in control of our destiny right now, and it all starts with getting this win Friday and taking care of business this week.”

Last week: Rockford Christian knocked off North Boone, 21-12; the Cogs rolled past Stillman Valley, 34-7.

Scouting the Royal Lions: Not only did they snap a 29-game losing streak this year, the win over the Vikings guaranteed them their best year since a 5-4 mark in 2011 – although that team missed the playoffs. The Lions made the playoffs seven times in school history – their first year was in 1999. They made the playoffs each year from 2005-10.

Things might not be totally turned around yet for the Lions – they are 0-2 against teams with winning records, and lost, 35-6, at home to a Mendota team that is 1-4.

Noah Kellerman ran for two touchdowns last week for Rockford Christian.

“They’re greatly improved,” G-K coach Bill McCarty said. “They had a great JV team last year, and were probably looking forward to those kids getting to the varsity team. They’re coming off a great homecoming win against North Boone.”

What’s at stake: The Cogs have been running over the opposition this year. Aidan Simmons leads the area with 512 rushing yards and is second with both 81 carries and seven scores. Dan Guardi is third in the area with 453 rushing yards and has five touchdowns.

McCarty said those gaudy rushing numbers begin with the offensive line.

“You have to give credit to those guys, but even they would tell you they wouldn’t have those numbers without the guys blocking in front of them,” McCarty said. “The whole line, the tight end, the receivers, all are blocking well this year.”

The Cogs have a big game against Dixon (4-1, 3-1) next week that could solidify their position as one of the top teams in the conference, along with Byron (5-0, 4-0) – the Cogs and Tigers don’t play each other this year.

But McCarty said his team has been great this year about not looking ahead.

“I think we’ve done a nice job of focusing each week,” McCarty said. “There are only nine games, and we’ve been focusing on the task at hand. You can’t think about that ones that are behind us and you can’t think about the future. I give a lot of credit to the kids for focusing on the task at hand.”

Cubs-Pirates stopped by rain; 1st tie in majors since ’05

PITTSBURGH – The Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates played to the first tie game in the major leagues since 2005 when rain forced the teams to stop in the sixth inning Thursday night with the score tied at 1. That’s because a person who suddenly collapses has a fair amount of oxygen in his or her bloodstream and doesn’t need the extra oxygen supplied by rescue breathing. Stopping compressions for rescue breathing might do more harm than good because it temporarily stops blood flowing to the brain.

All 911 operators are trained to give verbal cues for CPR. You can put your phone on speaker and ask the operator to talk you through the steps. The operator will count out loud to help you administer compressions at about 100 beats per minute.

CPR can be the difference between life and death. It keeps blood circulating until the person’s heart can be shocked back into a normal rhythm with an automated external defibrillator (AED). Emergency personnel will bring and use an AED. Many public areas have AEDs, which use voice prompts, lights and text messages to guide users (even people who haven’t been trained) through the steps.

The AHA, American Red Cross and other organizations offer classes on CPR and using a public defibrillator. You also can learn CPR by using a smartphone app or watching a brief video at www.heart.org/ handsonlycpr. It’s worth the time and effort. Four out of every five cardiac arrests happen at home, so the person you save is likely to be someone you love.

Dear Reader: That’s right. Since 2008, the American Heart Association has recommended “hands only” cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if an adult suddenly collapses.

Cardiac arrest usually is to blame when someone collapses and stops breathing. It occurs when the heart’s electrical system malfunctions. The heart beats rapidly and chaotically – or stops beating altogether.

The person stops breathing and becomes unresponsive.

In contrast, when people faint they also lose consciousness for a brief period, but they don’t stop breathing. You don’t want to perform CPR when someone has fainted, so be sure you have determined if the person is breathing.

If someone goes into cardiac arrest, first call 911, then immediately perform CPR. Place the palm of your non-dominant hand on the center of the person’s chest. If, like most people, you’re right-handed, you would place the palm of your left hand on the center of the chest.

Then with the dominant hand (your right hand, in this example), push down forcefully onto the top of your left hand, at about 100 times a minute. Pushing down this way squeezes blood out of the heart and keeps it flowing throughout the body. Every part of that person’s body needs a constant circulation of blood. The brain needs it most: If it doesn’t have a circulation of blood for more than four minutes, brain cells start to die.
