Amazing how many people we see a day POLL YESTERDAY’S

How many people do we come in contact with during a normal weekday? I thought about that as I was watching Hillary Clinton walk onstage Monday night in a red pantsuit while Donald Trump made his entrance wearing a bright blue tie. Red versus blue!

To make the next 90 minutes of TV watching productive, I composed a list of people I talked with Monday. First I must mention my wife, Kay, as we spent more time together than either of us did elsewhere.

While eating breakfast at the Lincoln Inn, I saw my some of my usual Monday morning companions: Jerry Smith, Peter Lawes, Gordon Melms, Jeff Perry, Jack Goodrich, Don Schoo and a newcomer, Jim Hovis. Lincoln Inn owner Bill McMahon greeted us, but our two longtime waitresses Eileen and Joanne were not there.

Later Bill had to call to tell me I left my credit card, for which I was grateful.

Next I returned to Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center for our three-times-a-week exercise program, met by the NIU faculty coordinator Dave Benner. Kay and I spent the next hour working out with NIU students Michael and Katie.

Next was a trip to Office Max, where I saw Keith Hernandez, who works there and also is a freelancer for the Daily Chronicle. We talked about our most recent published articles. After that, I drove to the Country Store, operated by volunteers to benefit Family Service Agency.

Two workers there had also volunteered at the Oak Crest crafts fair this weekend, but I didn’t get their names.

where I usually see Joe and Steve behind the counter, but not today, and Sycamore to deliver some printed material to Rick Amato and John Wett. Then it was back to DeKalb for lunch at Bea’s Wok N Roll, where Bea is helping me with a diet to try to lose 16 pounds. She served me half the normal portion and sent the other half home for me to eat as a second meal. Then after a stop at the bank I returned home for an hour’s nap so I could stay awake through the debate.

After some tasks at home, Kay and I went to dine at Oak Crest, where our table companions were David and Barbara Samulowitz. Afterward, I made a stop at the health center to chat with Stan Trail and his daughter Candace, who is visiting from Texas. Along the way we greeted a half dozen other residents before returning to our duplex.

I won’t detail the 27 email contacts I made, or the five phone calls, but keeping count for the first time it amazed me to find out I crossed paths with 20 people in just one day of the week.

Make a list yourself on an average day and you may be just as surprised how many interactions you experienced.

Police say that Maine man drove 146 mph on I-95

PITTSFIELD, Maine – Maine State Police said they’ve charged an 18-year-old Manchester man with driving a Dodge Neon at 146 mph on Interstate 95, more than twice the 70 mph speed limit.

Police say 18-year-old Tyler Barrows was stopped in Pittsfield, Maine, on Wednesday and was charged with criminal speeding, a misde-

meanor punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.

The Portland Press Herald reports the stop was made by Lt. Bruce Scott, head of the state police Traffic Safety Division.

Scott says it was the fastest he’s ever clocked someone driving.

It could not immediately be determined if Barrows has a lawyer.

Homecoming parade inspires Sycamore’s school spirit

SYCAMORE – School spirit flooded the streets of downtown Sycamore on Wednesday evening as community members packed the sidewalks to get a view of the parade kicking off homecoming week for Sycamore High School.

Gold and black were sported everywhere, from the marching band, cheerleaders and football players in the parade, to supportive families and friends watching.

But the athletes and musicians weren’t the only ones to display their Spartan pride.

School clubs also were able to show off as students drove the parade route in golf carts decorated to represent their passions.

A cart for the Future Farmers of America was made to look like a barn with stuffed-animal passengers, while another was decorated all in black to look like a giant camera with a flashbulb.

David Kolzow of Sycamore said that along with the nice fall weather, he liked how the parade brought people together.

“It unites the community, and it gives all the different clubs and groups a goal to strive toward,” he said.

When Kolzow asked his 3-year-old son, Lucas, if he was enjoying the parade, Lucas responded only by shyly hiding behind his father’s leg.

However, Kolzow said he was certain his son was having fun.

“I’m sure we’ll be here again when he’s 10 years older,” he said.

Bella Johnson, 9, of Sycamore enjoyed some candy after the parade and said her favorite cart was the one decorated with balloons by the volleyball team.

“It was awesome,” she said.

Bella’s mother, Tracie Johnson, said they came out to support Bella’s older sister, who is on the Sycamore volleyball team.

“I’ve never seen it from start to finish,” Tracie Johnson said. “She’s a freshman, so this is our first time watching the whole thing. I thought it was nice.”

This year’s route was shorter than usual in an attempt to better redirect traffic around the area; the parade was finished within half an hour.

Sycamore Police Chief Glenn Theriault said the parade route in previous years extended about six blocks down State Street, but this year it was kept within the downtown square.

“We shortened it to better facilitate

traffic,” Theriault said. “The detour was difficult for vehicles to try to get around the parade, so we opened up Main Street to Elm and allowed for better traffic flow.”

He said the altered route seemed to

work, and he received positive comments.

Sycamore’s homecoming football game will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Sycamore Stadium where the Spartans will take on Kaneland.

Bolingbrook fundraiser attracts mostly protesters, some supporters

fsarver@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – Between 150 and 200 people were outside the Bolingbrook Golf Club on Wednesday for several hours – but they weren’t waiting to hit a bucket of balls.

Most of them were protesting Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s private fundraising luncheon held at the club.

Protesters and media were in a fenced-off area across from the facility. A sign on the club property said: “Closed to the public, private event.”

Donald Members of severTrump al groups – including local organization Suburban Families Against Hate and national group Fight for $15 – were near the club before 10 a.m., ahead of the 11:30 a.m. start time for the luncheon, which had entry prices ranging from $1,000 to $250,000.

There were no sightings of Trump’s motorcade on Rodeo Drive – the main entryway to the club – and he wasn’t clearly seen by the crowd outside. He likely entered from Kings Road to the east, which runs along a cornfield.

Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar confirmed in a phone interview after the event that former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani spoke to the crowd of about 300. He listed Chicago Cubs co-owner Todd Ricketts and former Chicago Bear Dan Hampton as two other big names who attended. Claar said DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin also was there.

Before, during and after the luncheon, which ended at 1 p.m., several debates of varying volume took place between Trump supporters and protesters. Topics included immigration, the economy, Trump’s comments about various groups of people and who had a right to stand where on the protest grounds.

Bolingbrook resident Ryan Wilder joined the protest from about 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wilder is a union machinist and an Air Force veteran, and has four nephews in the Marines.

He said he came to protest because of Trump’s “divisive message.”

“I couldn’t let this go by,” Wilder said of Trump’s visit to Bolingbrook.

“His message is agitating and there’s no place for it.”

He took issue with Trump’s description of America, saying the candidate paints the country as a “dystopia.”

“The way he describes America, you’d swear we were in a ‘Mad Max’ movie,” he said.

“I couldn’t let this go by.

Wilder said he doesn’t appreciate the way Trump has treated people who have either worked for, or with, the billionaire, and said Trump is anti-union.

Wilder and Army veteran Dan Clark of Romeoville have also been bothered by Trump’s comments about military veterans. Wilder ob-

jected to Trump’s July comments that a Muslim soldier who died in Iraq had “sacrificed nothing.”

Trump then stated in a TV interview that he had “made a lot of sacrifices” while highlighting his business accomplishments.

Clark recalled when Trump said U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, was “not a war hero.” McCain spent more than five years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam.

Although many veterans have been outspoken Trump supporters, Clark said those he knows do not support Trump.

She was born Sept. 14, 1953, in Sandwich, the daughter of Herschel and Constance (Hays) Leifheit. She married Carl Traeger on June 7, 1986, at the Presbyterian Church in Waterman.

After graduating from Waterman High School in 1971, she attended college in Dekalb, and entered the banking and financial sectors before becoming a commercial real estate agent in the greater Orlando area.

Nonprofit seeks Halloween costumes for those in need

DeKALB – A local nonprofit that provides Halloween costumes to those in need is seeking donations.

The Halloween Costume Club is requesting people donate new and used Halloween costumes of all sizes.

There are three drop-off locations for donations: Kishwaukee YMCA, 2500 Bethany Road, Sycamore, the Sycamore Public Library, 103 E. State St., and DeKalb Public Library, 309 Oak St. Items, including accessories such as hats and wigs, can be donated at these collection bins through Sunday.

The costumes will benefit families at Safe Passage, Barb Food Mart and Salem Lutheran Food Pantry.

Over the past three years, the group has provided more than 800 costumes to those in need.

The charity was started by 12-yearold Sycamore resident Susana Martin.

DeKALB – The annual school spirit revelry that is part of homecoming for DeKalb High School gets started today with a parade in downtown DeKalb that steps off near the library.

The DeKalb High School marching band, along with school clubs and more are expected to parade along a stretch of Lincoln Highway in a spectacle expected to be loud, fun and a show of Barbs pride.

Past parades have included participation from alumni groups, and marchers are again expected to toss candy into the crowd.

The parade will start at 5:30 p.m. outside the DeKalb Public Library, 309 Oak St., and travel south on Third Street, then west on Lincoln Highway, turning north on Second Street then going east on Fisk Avenue, then north on DeKalb Avenue and ending at Clinton Rosette Middle School.

Other homecoming activities include Friday’s football game and a dance Saturday night.

All are scheduled to take place at the high school.

DeKalb police advise that there will

be street closures for today’s parade, and motorists are advised to find alternate routes.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

DeKALB – Domestic violence survivors will be honored Monday with a candlelight walk and vigil hosted

by Safe Passage shelter and advocacy center.

The vigil will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 615 N. First St. in DeKalb.

Safe Passage advocate Marj Askins said the vigil has been a tradition for more than 20 years to kick off Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.

Askins said the theme of this year’s vigil is “Capture My Story,” which goes along with an art project featuring photos that survivors have deemed significant to their stories.

Participants will be able to view

the artwork, enjoy refreshments and listen to survivors’ stories during the survivor speak out.

“It’s really moving,” Askins said.

“Survivors go through a lot that is invisible to people who are not in that situation, and the survivors show a lot of courage by sharing their stories with the public.”

Askins said the past few years’ vigils have seen about 80 people attend.

“This includes survivors and their families, as well as community members who want to say that domestic violence is not welcome here and people who want to learn more about prevention,” she said.

Askins said the night will conclude with a candlelight walk in remembrance of those who have survived domestic violence as well as those who have been lost.

Although more supporters came to Trump’s aid as the day wore on, protesters outnumbered supporters about 4-to-1. One supporter, Chicago resident Brian Strainis, was waving an American flag and said he was there to support Trump and the police.

He said the demonstrations Wednesday had been peaceful, unlike the “mosh pit” in March when Trump came to Chicago for a rally that was canceled over security concerns after scuffles broke out between Trump supporters and protesters.

“It was a disgrace – that gives Chicago its name, Chi-Raq,” he said.

Jim Bockelmann of Villa Park said he came to support Trump because he finds the candidate honest.

“Let’s give him a chance,” he said.

Bolingbrook mayor criticized

During the luncheon, Suburban Families Against Hate led the charge against Claar’s support of Trump.

Claar was one of the hosts of Wednesday’s event.

Norman Brown, a member of the organization, said the group will hold Claar accountable in the 2017 mayoral election for inviting Trump to a facility paid for by the tax dollars of a diverse community.

The Bolingbrook Golf Club broke ground in 1999 and opened in 2002, according to Shaw Media archives. In March 2002, the Bolingbrook Village Board voted to approve a $72.7 million bond sale to refinance some of the village’s debt, and among other things, build an $18 million clubhouse, according to the newspaper’s archives.

When asked about the protesters’ signs and message that Trump and Claar are “two of a kind,” Claar replied that the protest leaders have been against him before and will be in the future.

Will County Board member Jacqueline Traynere, D-Bolingbrook, encouraged residents to sign a petition and organize the removal of Claar as mayor.

“For too long people in this community have been asleep and just expect Grandpa Claar to sprinkle some fairy dust over them,” she said.

Claar said Traynere is a terrible public servant and has worked against him in every election. He said the Trump event gave protest leaders “a horse to ride” going into the spring 2017 election, in which he will seek a ninth term.

Bob Jaskiewicz, a former Bolingbrook Village Board candidate, told the crowd that Claar and his “board puppets” only “care about themselves and not the residents.”

Nicki Serbin, chairwoman for the group, who worked with Knutson on his costume, said it was inspired by a Trump surrogate who warned Hillary Clinton winning the election would result in taco trucks on every corner.

She said it was meant to be satirical and entertaining without being adversarial.

“This is kind of a stressful situation and we thought a little levity might be helpful,” Serbin said.

TOWNVILLE, S.C. – A teenager killed his father at their home Wednesday before going to a nearby elementary school and opening fire with a handgun, wounding two students and a teacher, authorities said.

The teen was apprehended within minutes of the school shooting in this rural town about 110 miles northeast of Atlanta.

One of the students was shot in the leg and the other in the foot, Capt. Garland Major with the Anderson County sheriff’s office said. Both students were male.

The female teacher was hit in the shoulder. Before the shooting at Townville Elementary about 1:45 p.m., the teen gunned down his 47-year-old father, Jeffrey Osborne, at their home about 2 miles from the school, authorities said.

“These forces will be primarily to enable Iraqi security forces and also (Kurdish) Peshmerga in the operations to isolate and collapse ISIL’s control over Mosul, but also to protect and expand Iraqi security forces’ gains elsewhere in Iraq,” Defense Secretary Ash Carter told reporters Wednesday.

WASHINGTON – In a resounding rebuke, Democrats joined with Republicans on Wednesday to hand Barack Obama the first veto override of his presidency, voting overwhelmingly to allow families of Sept. 11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia in U.S. courts for its alleged backing of the attackers.

Both the House and Senate voted decisively to reverse Obama’s decision to scuttle the legislation. Democrats in both chambers abandoned the president in large numbers despite warnings from Obama and top national security officials that flaws in the bill could put U.S. interests, troops and intelligence personnel at risk.

The Senate vote was 97-1, with only Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., backing the president. The House vote a few hours later was 348-77, with 123 Democrats rebuffing the president and voting to override. Obama said during a CNN interview that overriding his veto was a mistake that may set a “dangerous precedent.”

Lawmakers said their priority wasn’t Saudi Arabia, but the 9/11 victims and their families who continue to demand justice 15 years after attackers killed nearly 3,000 people in New York, the Washington, D.C., area, and Pennsylvania.

Fifteen of the 19 Sept. 11 hijackers were Saudis.

“Overriding a presidential veto is something we don’t take lightly, but it was important in this case that the families of the victims of 9/11 be allowed to pursue justice, even if that pursuit causes some diplomatic discom-

forts,” said Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., a chief sponsor of the bill.

Speaking at a forum in Washington, CIA Director John Brennan said he was concerned about how Saudi Arabia, a key U.S. ally in the Middle East, would interpret the bill. He said the Saudis provide significant amounts of information to the U.S. to help foil extremist plots.

“It would be an absolute shame if this legislation, in any way, influenced the Saudi willingness to continue to be among our best counterterrorism partners,” Brennan said.

On CNN, Obama said that a few lawmakers who backed the bill weren’t aware of its potential impact. He didn’t name them.

“And, frankly, I wish Congress here had done what’s hard,” he said. “It was, you know, basically a political vote.”

But Republicans and Democrats said the White House had been slow to respond to the bill and miscalculated lawmakers’ intent to act on the legislation along with the 15th anniversary of the terror attacks. When Obama and senior national security officials such as Defense Secretary Ash Carter finally weighed in, it was too late.

The Senate passed the bill by voice vote in May. The Obama White House then made the mistake of thinking the bill would stall in the Republican-controlled House. In August, 9/11 families pressured Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., while he was on a campaign swing in New York.

On Sept. 9, two days before the 15th anniversary of 9/11, the House passed the bill by voice vote with little debate.

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – More people are seeking or casting early ballots in the critical states of North Carolina and Florida than at this point in 2012, with Hillary Clinton the likely benefactor, as early voting shows signs of surging nationwide.

Clinton also might benefit from an increase in ballot requests in Georgia, a traditionally Republican state where Democrats have made inroads.

But Donald Trump is showing signs of strength in Iowa and parts of Maine, states won by Barack Obama in the last two presidential elections.

The latest snapshot of ballot data offers a glimpse into a key question: How much of a vote advantage can Clinton run up before Nov. 8, when more Republicans tend to vote?

Traditionally Republicans have

done better initially with early mailin ballots, before Democrats surpass them once in-person early voting begins.

While the ballot sample to date remains small, Clinton so far is hitting guideposts in several battleground states compared to 2008 and 2012.

Although preliminary, data compiled by The Associated Press suggest that advance voting could reach 40 percent of all votes cast nationally – up from 35 percent in 2012.

It also might indicate a higher overall turnout in an election that has generated enormous public interest despite – or because of – the unpopularity of both major party candidates.

In Ohio, nearly 806,000 voters had submitted absentee ballot applications.

That’s up from nearly 723,000 during a similar period in 2012, when a record 1.87 million early ballots ultimately were cast by mail and in person.

No excuse to not cast a ballot in the election As of Thursday, there are 40 days left until Nov. 8, otherwise known this year as Election Day. But you don’t have to wait 40 days to cast your ballot. You can pretty much vote any weekday (and even a few weekends) now through Nov. 8.

Thursday is the first day to cast a ballot in the November election through early voting options.

Ballots can be cast through the mail (often done by those in the military or temporarily residing overseas); early voting at the county clerk’s office (and possibly some municipal offices, too); and if you don’t register to vote or change your address by the deadline (Oct. 11), you can do grace period voting where you register late – but have to cast your ballot right then.

All this means you have no excuse for not voting in this year’s election. Gone are the days when ballots could just be cast on Election Day; there is no reason everyone can’t do their civic duty.

We do offer this caveat, however, if you’re casting your ballot early: Do your research before you vote. While the presidential race has dominated this year’s election’s cycle, there are other races on the ballot that deserve your attention.

There are some contested races for County Board seats, as well as contested countywide races for state’s attorney and 23rd Circuit Judge on the ballot. Some of you may have a referendum to consider. There also are contested races for U.S. Senate and House.

Some of those contests may have a larger effect on your everyday life than who winds up being president. Generally speaking, the smaller the government (think County Board), the bigger the chance the action it conducts will actually affect your life.

Candidates have websites and Facebook pages. Visit DeKalb County Clerk Doug Johnson’s website to view sample ballots and find out where you can cast a ballot.

Maine’s unhinged governor A three-ring binder has now exposed the threering circus of unhinged racism and ravings that are the hallmarks of Maine’s Republican Gov. Paul LePage.

LePage, who entered office in 2011 refusing to attend Martin Luther King Jr. Day events or meet with representatives of the NAACP, has a long history of racial animus, and this year he has outdone himself.

In January, he attributed Maine’s opioid epidemic to “guys with the name D-Money, Smoothie, Shifty [who] come from Connecticut and New York, they come up here, they sell their heroin, they go back home [and] half the time they impregnate a young white girl before they leave.”

Challenged on that assertion last month, LePage, whom few in Maine regard as the sharpest mind in state politics, dug himself a deeper hole: “Ninety-plus percent of those pictures in my book, and it’s a three-ring binder, are black and Hispanic people.” And the next day: “Black people come up the highway and they kill Mainers.”

Facts are inconvenient for LePage, who now appears to have been undone by them. A few weeks after his “90 percent-plus” assertion, Maine’s Portland Press Herald published FBI statistics showing that the overwhelming majority of those arrested in Maine for drug offenses in 2014 were white; only 14 percent were black.

Then, bowing to lawsuits, LePage was forced this week to release his by-now notorious threering binder of drug trafficking suspects – a 148-page scrapbook full of news clippings, press releases and mug shots. It turns out that LePage’s

usual suspects, out-of-state blacks and Hispanics, comprised no more than about a third of the suspects in it, according to an analysis by The Associated Press. The governor’s office now says LePage wishes to “move on.”

He really should move on – by resigning and seeking help, in order to spare the people of Maine more of his wild-eyed ramblings.

Having menaced a Democratic state legislator in an obscenity-filled voicemail rant, likened the IRS to the Gestapo and suggested that President Barack Obama “go to hell,” LePage threatens to remake his state’s image from a vacation paradise of surreal natural beauty to a hotbed of hatred.

In nearly six years as governor, LePage’s memorable assaults on decent governance and public civility include hiring his own relatives, threatening to shoot the political cartoonist of a state newspaper and attacking a Democratic state senator as “the first one to give it to the people without providing Vaseline.”

He has referred to blacks and Hispanics as “the enemy,” adding that “the enemy right now, the overwhelming majority of people coming in, are people of color or people of Hispanic origin.”

Although Maine still is the nation’s most racially homogeneous state, its white population dipped from 95.2 percent in 2010 to 94.9 percent in 2015.

Perhaps this creeping diversity is what has deranged LePage, who regards the world through a lens of racial hatred.

Officials of both parties have called on him to resign. It’s high time he does.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

He said that she had been in politics too long; she let it go.

Even on trade, where the positions they articulated were pretty similar – they both want tougher enforcement of trade laws, say they are free traders, and reject the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership – she sounded more like someone who wanted to be on all sides of the issue at once.

Trump also continued to cross ideological lines. He refused to let Clinton get to his left on child care,

as other Republican candidates would have, saying that they disagreed only on details. He said the U.S. couldn’t be the world’s policeman, a line no Republican nominee in decades would have used against the Democrats. He even defended Bernie Sanders from her allies’ attacks.

But Trump did not have to fill as much time during the crowded Republican primary debates as he did at Hofstra, and he seemed to run out of things to say early.

She, on the other hand, got better after her overscripted beginning.

She took shot after shot: at his tax return, his tax plan, his business record and his history of demeaning women.

He wasn’t as versatile. Sometimes he let himself get put on the defensive. By the end, he was just whining that her advertisements were “not nice.”

How you think the debate went depends on where you think the race was at its outset. He has had momentum, so his followers have been more buoyant than hers lately.

But she has remained ahead in the poll averages, and polls keep showing that voters think she is qualified and he isn’t.

So the fact that she didn’t disqualify him was not enough to make this debate a win for him. He needed to do more than continue to get across his nationalist message once again. He needed to show himself qualified to people who doubt it. He didn’t. She won this round.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR DeKalb TIF spending affects whole community

To the Editor: It seems as if City Hall wants to obtain input about tax increment financing, as well as to explain it.

In order to do this, the city has chosen to hold ward meetings in 3rd, 4th and 5th Wards.

It is important for the public to attend these meetings, especially if you reside in any of those wards. In fact, since the main discussion will be about tax increment financing, it is a good idea for the residents to attend even if you do not live in any of these wards.

TIF dollars affect the entire community in some way, and the public should have a basic understanding of the TIF process and should express their concerns and share their ideas and opinions. Any resident can attend any of the meetings.

I am concerned that plans for how TIF funds will be utilized may already have been set in motion. This is the motivating factor for me to urge the public to attend and so they can join me and others so we can listen, ask questions and give opinions.

There has been much expressed of late about concerns regarding every aspect of our community: our schools, our roads, our taxes, declining property values, procedures utilized at City Hall, Northern Illinois University’s declining enrollment, and other topics.

Feeling sad for D-428 principal and superintendent

To the Editor: After reading the article published in the Daily Chronicle on Sept. 22 regarding District 428 Superintendent Doug Moeller being placed on administrative leave, I couldn’t help feeling sad for both the superintendent and the DeKalb High School principal. It had always been my understanding that “bullying” was a student-to-student issue not an issue for school administration.

If the allegations are true that the superintendent’s medications are contributing to inappropriate behavior, we can only wish him godspeed in getting his medications under control.

As for meeting after work for a drink, a coffee, or dinner to discuss views on work-related matters, that is not uncommon and can be very beneficial in professional working relationships. The risk, of course, comes when one tries to exploit favors, sexual or otherwise, from the other with implied or veiled threats of job security or public embarrassment.

Thankfully our society has afforded the victims of such a ploy protections under

the law. There are insufficient facts for us to judge these events, other than to understand how they can happen.

Of the offerings of this story that disturb me the most is the allegation that the superintendent carries a gun in his personal vehicle. Heaven forbid that one day he forgets to lock his vehicle and a curious or mischievous student decides to rifle through his vehicle only to come across a loaded gun.

Although this incident puts a dark cloud over the administration of District 428, there can be a silver lining. If the school board now decides to take action, they can look for a new superintendent who has a history of strong fiscal controls, strong administrative controls, fair but strict management style that supports “controlled” student involvement, and protects the faculty and staff from overzealous and/or under involved parents.

Most importantly, a superintendent who has a history of having a “flat” management team and an administration that protects the taxpayer from higher taxes.

We can only hope!

Donald Trump had plenty of moments Monday night that would have disqualified any other candidate in a presidential debate: bragging about getting through a discrimination investigation “with no admission of guilt;” saying he had not “given lots of thought” to NATO; noting that he often took advantage of laws; taking pride in having paid no taxes some years; and referring to the man in the White House as “your president.”

But you could have compiled a similar list in nearly any fortnight of the Trump campaign, and he still is competitive with Hillary Clinton in the polls. We’ve become inured to Trump.

Sarver leading Huskies into conference play

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Before the season, Northern Illinois women’s soccer coach John Ross said that sophomore Taylor Sarver was one of the fastest players in the Mid-American Conference.

Now, the speedy forward has helped the Huskies to a perfect start to conference play.

Sarver leads the team with four goals on the year, including two in the conference opener against Central Michigan, and was named the MAC West Player of the Week.

“She’s always been a dangerous player,” Ross said. “Last year, she had created quite a few opportunities like she is this year. This year she’s putting them in the back of the net. She’s a little more confident in front of the net. She came in as a goal scorer and it took her a couple of months to get comfortable and now she’s comfortable and we’re excited about her future here.”

The Huskies (3-4-2 overall, 2-0 in MAC West) opened up with a 4-0 win over Central Michigan – which is 9-1 on the season – and a 2-1 victory over Eastern Michigan.

The Huskies have won their first two conference matches. better and just attacking and not forcing it,” said Sarver, who had an assist in the win over Eastern Michigan. “It gave us a boost but we can’t let that get to our heads. We can’t think we’re better than anybody just because we won those two games. We still need to come in strong and be confident – but not too

confident.”

Although they outscored their two opponents 6-1, the Huskies were outshot 16-13, including 11-8 against the Chippewas.

“The opportunities we did have, we put them away,” Sarver said.

The two victories come after a tough

nonconference schedule, in which the Huskies went 1-4-2 and played three Power 5 schools – Baylor, No. 23 Arizona and Arizona State. Ross said the Huskies improved the most because of two of the losses. They allowed a late goal to fall 1-0 to Baylor and Ross said he felt the Huskies played well against Arizona in a 2-0 defeat.

“We were focusing more defensively in the nonconference games, making sure we knew what we had to do defensively first,” he said. “The past two weeks, we’ve looked more at offense and remember what we were doing defensively. Physically, Arizona is a very tall team and pretty good athleticism – Baylor is very athletic. I don’t think we’ll see a team (in the MAC) as athletic as Baylor. There will be a couple that are close to Baylor, but we won’t see one that’s as athletic as them.”

The Huskies now have a bit more confidence and are about to start an important three-game stretch on the road, starting Friday against Kent State (6-1 overall, 2-0 in MAC East).

“We just have to have the fight we’ve had all year,” Ross said. “The beginning of the game, it’s all about the fight.

That’s why we played all those bigger schools during nonconference.”

DeKalb falls in straight sets to Geneva

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKalb struggled their way through a 25-12, 25-22 straight set loss to Geneva on Wednesday night.

DeKalb (12-6, 3-2 Northern Illinois Big 12) fell behind early in the first set against Geneva (17-0, 4-0 Upstate Eight) and were never able to compile any momentum to crawl back into the set. The Barbs would score a point, then Geneva would follow up with two or three points to counter and that trend carried out through the end of the first set and throughout most of the second set. The Barbs were led by Hannah Oehlberg who had six kills. Jasmine Kemp finished with five kills and five blocks.

“I think it was a tough mental match against an experienced team,” DeKalb coach Jamie DiMaggio said. “Geneva is a great team and they’re soused to winning and they were never flustered no matter what the situation was. We came in already defeated so I’m a little disappointed in my team in that sense. But they picked it up in game two and followed the game plan and they battled.”

The second set resulted in a much closer score, but the story remained the same as the Vikings held control over the Barbs and were never behind. Just past the midway point in the set, the score was tied 14 all but the trend from the first set returned as Geneva again were able to string together a few more points than DeKalb and eventually came away with the three-point win. Geneva was led in kills by Grace Loberg who had 14 and Allyson Barrett had seven blocks.

“Our serving broke down early in the match so we were unable to get our attackers in position,” DiMaggio said. “We worked on trying to get our feet moving a little more because when it becomes a mental match, the feet tend to freeze up a little. Things as a player that are so natural begin to not feel so natural anymore.”

Geneva coach Annie Seitelman said her team got it done with its serving.

“The big emphasis is being aggressive on the service line,” Seitelman said. “That can keep them out of sync and end up helping us defensively and we were able to transition out of that to score quick points.”

Cutler limited in practice

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com LAKE FOREST – Injuries have been a real issue for the Bears in the past nine days, and even John Fox missed practice Wednesday.

The Bears’ coach is dealing with a stomach bug. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, who addressed the team during the team meeting and after practice, said it was “business as usual.”

QB Jay Cutler (thumb) did return to practice in a limited fashion. DE Jonathan Bullard (toe), ILB Jerrell Freeman (ribs), WR Alshon Jeffery (knee), RG Kyle Long (shoulder), DB Sherrick McManis (hamstring), CB Tracy Porter (knee), LG Josh Sitton (shoulder), DE Mitch Unrein (knee) and OLB Willie Young (knee) all were limited as the Bears began their prep for the Lions on Sunday.

RB Ka’Deem Carey (hamstring), NT Eddie Goldman (ankle), S Harold Jones-Quartey (concussion), RB Jeremy Langford (ankle) and ILB Danny Trevathan (thumb) did not practice.

Pass rush needs improvement: The Bears did not sack Dak Prescott on Sunday night and hit him only one time, with players referring to the rookie’s ability to get rid of the ball quickly, something Lions QB Matthew Stafford certainly will try to do Sunday.

Even when Prescott held the ball a second longer, the defensive front couldn’t get to him.

“I think a lot of the teams throw it pretty quick these days. Our rush wasn’t good enough when they weren’t throwing it quick and it was evident by the times [Prescott] scrambled. He scrambled three times for first downs

and they hurt us,” Fangio said. “Our rush wasn’t good enough. There are a lot of passes that the rush won’t be a factor because it is coming out fast. But we have to get better coverage to make them hold the ball longer, too.”

Next steps for Glenn: With CB Kyle Fuller on injured reserve, the starting corner spot opposite Porter will continue to be Jacoby Glenn’s. Fangio said Glenn has been good against deep balls and needs to bring that play to shorter throws.

“He’s made some good plays on some deep balls and down the field, which has been good,” Fangio said. “... We’ve got to get him to play tighter and more aggressive on the shorter throws and improve his overall play that way.”

Glenn leads the team through three games with five passes defensed.

New back: Former Lion Joique Bell had his first practice Wednesday with the Bears. Bell worked out for the Lions this month, and even though he did not re-sign, Lions coach Jim Caldwell had high praise for his former running back.

“He’s a hard-working, tough, hardnosed guy who can carry the ball, and he did a tremendous job for us,” Caldwell said. “I love the guy. He’s pretty special.”

Missing the anchor: It was evident Sunday how much it hurt not having Eddie Goldman plugging the middle when the Cowboys rushed for 199 yards.

“Just his overall good play, stoutness,” Fangio said of what the team misses when Goldman is sidelined.

“He’s one of our better defensive players, and when you miss an anchor in there, it can hurt you.”

Mark McNeill is a Blackhawks staple without a Blackhawks history.

He was a first-round draft pick in 2011, so long ago the Hawks were barely a year removed from their first Stanley Cup of the modern era. At 23, he’s closer in age to Patrick Kane than Alex DeBrincat. He was Rockford’s second-leading scorer last season, the leading scorer the year before that, and the fifth-leading scorer the year before that. He’s been on the cusp of the NHL for so long, this is his fifth training camp in Chicago.

That’s why it’s so jarring to realize that Wednesday’s preseason opener was the first actual game McNeill ever played at the United Center.

“I’m thrilled,” he said before the game. “I’m excited I’m in the lineup. I’m planning to come out flying and have a lot of fun with it.”

If there’s any bitterness in McNeill, any frustration at seeing so many prospects – most of them younger, most of them less productive at the AHL level – promoted ahead of him, he’s not showing it. Even after having to wait until July 15 to sign a one-year, twoway contract as a restricted free agent, McNeill sounds as happy and optimistic as ever. He even showed up for the Hawks’ fan convention without a deal in place (it finally was announced the day the convention began).

“Of course, there are uncertainties when you’re an unsigned player, but I’ve always loved being a part of the Blackhawks organization and being here,” McNeill said. “I want nothing more than to try to make this team and help this team win. My focus was trying to get a contract to come back here.”

The loyalty to the franchise that drafted him and the determination to stick it out are perfectly understandable. But from afar, McNeill seemed like one of those career prospects who desperately needed a new city and a new team, one that would give him a real chance to make it in the NHL. After all, in the five years

he’s been in the Hawks organization, he’s played in only one NHL game – at Carolina last season.

And McNeill’s name was bandied about in trade discussions over the summer, with his hometown Edmonton Oilers in the mix, according to a source.

But with the Hawks facing an alarming dearth of forwards, McNeill’s best shot might indeed still be in Chicago.

“This is certainly a big year,” assistant coach Kevin Dineen said. “We’ve talked about players in the past that need the quote-unquote change of scenery, but I think Mark’s main focus over the next couple of weeks is to make the NHL in a Blackhawk uniform.”

To do that, Dineen said, McNeill will need to play with a physical edge and throw his 6-foot-2, 212-pound frame around, and to even “defend” his teammates should the need arise.

McNeill has scored 18, 23 and 25 goals in his three full seasons in Rockford. There basically is nothing left for him to prove at the AHL level.

For years, McNeill and Phil Danault – drafted eight picks apart in 2011 – were intrinsically linked within the organization and among the fan base. And McNeill admitted it’s “a little strange” to be at a Hawks camp without his longtime running buddy.

But Danault got his cup of coffee in the NHL in 2014-15, and broke through permanently last season, playing 30 games before being traded to Montreal at the trade deadline.

It’s just another sign of just how long McNeill has been waiting for his first real chance at the NHL. In that game in Carolina in January, he played 12 minutes, 44 seconds, and failed to record a point, a shot on goal or even a shot attempt. His only marks on the scoresheet were a takeaway and three hits. But the experience has lingered in his memory, and has driven him to keep chasing his NHL dream, and to keep chasing it in Chicago.

“Once you get that taste, you just want more,” he said. “I’m a pretty self-motivated guy, and I’m pretty hungry to achieve my goals and make it here.”

The Associated Press LONG BEACH, Calif. – Candace Parker scored 19 of her 30 points in the first half, Nneka Ogwumike added 27, and the Los Angeles Sparks beat the Chicago Sky 95-75 in their semifinal playoff opener Wednesday night.

Two-time WNBA MVP Parker had nine rebounds and newly crowned MVP Ogwumike had 10 rebounds and six assists for the Sparks, who were playing their first game in 12 days after early-round byes in the revamped playoffs. The game was at the Pyramid on the Long Beach State campus, 24 miles from downtown Los Angeles.

The Sky was missing injured Elena Delle Donne and her team-leading averages of 21.5 points and 7.0 rebounds.

In her absence, the offensive load was spread among four players. Jamierra Faulkner scored a leading 13 points off the bench. Cappie Pondexter added 12, Tamera Young had 11 and Courtney

Vandersloot 10.

The Sparks ran off nine straight points for an 86-65 lead in the fourth.

The Sky never got closer than 12 points in the third, with Parker scoring the Sparks’ final six points on a threepoint play and a 3-pointer. Ogwumike had 12 in the quarter, including eight in a row, stealing the ball and converting at the other end in one possession.

The Sparks led 52-35 at halftime, pulling away with a 23-8 run to end the second quarter. Parker had nine points, Ogwumike seven and Kristi Toliver hit a 3-pointer to cap their scoring. They shot 62 percent in the half.

Wade promises last year’s Bulls problems gone

Thirteen seasons in the Association taught Dwyane Wade that lesson.

How did a Bulls team with so much talent miss out on the playoffs last season? Not only miss out, but at 42-40 become one of the true underachieving stories of the year.

Wade heard the rumors of discontent in the locker room, and didn’t mind playing private investigator in getting to the bottom of what went wrong with his new team.

“You ask the guys that were here last year, how rotten it was,’’ Wade said. “You want to hear from their perspective, whatever it was last year from the standpoint of losing. You don’t do that. I come from a different place and a different culture. Things are done differently different places.

So I sat down and listened to guys.

“But the thing is, some of the things they talked about I know are not going to take place. Not while I’m here, not while [Rajon] Rondo’s here, not while Jimmy [Butler] continues to grow as a leader. You talk about last year, but at the same time, last year

I come from a different place and a different culture. Things are done differently different places. So I sat down and listened to guys.

Bulls shooting guard doesn’t matter. We have a different core, and I think our culture is fairly different. We have guys now, Rondo’s won a championship, I’ve won championships, we demand respect on the court.’’

Not exactly the case last season.

Respect for one another was only an idea for the 2015-16 Bulls. And one that didn’t stick around very long into the year. Veterans Joakim Noah and Derrick Rose didn’t like the rise of leadership handed to Jimmy Butler. Butler didn’t respect the laid-back work ethic of Rose. And that just scratched the surface of bad feelings.

The Sun-Times reported after last season that Noah was so distrustful of

the front office and the way they handled things that he openly told teammates that he would not return to the only NBA team he had known.

Noah didn’t, instead signing with the Knicks after Rose was traded to New York.

And while it’s only been two days and four practice this season, Butler is not only seeing a team that genuinely likes each other, but admitted just how important that is for a team’s success.

“I think for the most part, yeah,’’ Butler said. “You definitely gotta like each other. If you don’t, and you can say this doesn’t happen, but I feel like if you don’t like a guy you’re not going to pass him the ball.’’

Rondo agreed that liking each other “on the court’’ was important, but respecting each other would be the key.

That’s all Fred Hoiberg could ask for.

“I think it is important,’’ the second-year coach said of teammates getting along. “Bigger than that is having respect for each other. If your team respects each other and how hard you play, then you’re going to be able to have success.’’

Which means not only respecting each other, but policing each other right away and not letting bad habits or feelings grow.

“Too much chatter,’’ Rondo said of what he put a stop to.

“We’ve got a lot of young guys as well, so they’ll listen,’’ Wade said.

PITTSBURGH – Just ahead of their most anticipated October in generations, the Cubs reached agreement on a five-year contract extension with the architect of this year’s World Series favorite.

Team president Theo Epstein reached agreement over the weekend on a deal sources said is valued in the neighborhood of the five-year, $50 million package Andrew Friedman received from the Theo Epstein Dodgers before last season. The guaranteed base is said to be below that figure, but includes incentive and bonus clauses.

Epstein and chairman Tom Ricketts met four times over the summer, Ricketts said, before finalizing the deal Saturday and announcing it Wednesday.

They originally intended to announce it Sunday, before the death of young Miami pitching star Jose Fernandez early Sunday morning sent shock waves through baseball.

“There was never any real drama throughout the summer,” said Ricketts of a deal that was called imminent since before spring training.

PITTSBURGH (AP) – With the Cubs supposedly fine-tuning things for postseason form, ace Jake Arrieta was roughed up by the Pittsburgh Pirates in an 8-4 loss Wednesday night.

Pirates first baseman John Jaso hit for the cycle, and Arrieta (18-8) gave up seven runs and 10 hits – both season-highs – in five innings. But manager Joe Maddon said there isn’t cause for concern that the Cubs’ starter won’t be able to right the ship come October.

“That was probably the best strike-throwing I have seen out of him,” Maddon said. “He was throwing very well. Up until the home run by Jaso, there’s just a couple singles to the opposite field. That was it. Then, the last inning kind of got away from us too. But he wasn’t that bad today. Asked whether this contract met that expectation, Ricketts said he’s not sure.

“But I think it’s in the range,” he said.

“It’s competitive, and where it should be for someone who I think is the best baseball executive in the game.”

Epstein, 42, said the timing of the deal in the end came down to waiting until the Cubs had clinched all they could clinch during the regular season, and called the deal a reflection of mutual trust built over the past five years and a validation of the work done by “literally hundreds of people” in the organization.

“It took a bit of a leap of faith in [ownership] coming here, and they have lived up to everything they said they would do,” said Epstein, who is in the final year of a five-year, $18.5 million deal. “There’s no place I’d rather be.”

CHICAGO – This White Sox’s 2016 season took a strange twist and turn before it began, when the Drake LaRoche kid-in-the-clubhouse caper turned into an international story.

It stayed weird when Chris Sale cut up the team’s uniforms in July.

And now, four days before the season finale, it looks like it will stay on a similar odd path to Robin Ventura the very end when manager Robin Ventura declined to discuss his future – or even to say whether he wants to return next season – after a USA Today report, citing a high-ranking official, saying the Sox are welcoming him back even though his contract will be up as he closes in on a fourth consecutive losing season.

CHICAGO (AP) – Todd Frazier hit his 40th home run, Miguel Gonzalez waited out a rain delay to throw 81/3 dominant innings and the White Sox edged the Tampa Bay Rays, 1-0, on soggy Wednesday night.

Frazier set a career high and became the seventh Sox player to reach the homer milestone when he connected off knuckleballer Eddie Gamboa (0-2) with two out in the seventh. Frazier is hitting .391 (18 for 46) during a 12-game hitting streak. have decided to retain their manager and will sign Ventura to new contract if he wants to return. A major league source, however, said Ventura has not received a contract offer for next year.

Also, contract negotiations had not begun and Ventura wouldn’t say Wednesday if he wants to return.

“I’m not going to get into it, I’m just

going to wait till the end of the year,’’ Ventura said. “We’ll wait.”

News that Ventura, who took a 373432 record into the Sox’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays Wednesday, would return if he wants to did not go over particularly well with fans, if social media is an indication. No Sox manager has survived four straight losing seasons, so the report came as a surprise, although chairman Jerry Reinsdorf’s respect for Ventura, loyalty and his understanding the reasons for the Sox’s record run deeper than the manager kept the possibility of a return open.

With no experience, Ventura was an unexpected hire when the Sox, looking for a calm and steady presence after eight years of Ozzie Guillen’s oft-turbulent (and successful) term, made him their choice after the 2012 season. Ventura grew to like the position and has often said so, and in August he said he wanted to come back, but also said the Sox had to want him back.

Stars identify problems, solutions on ‘America Divided’

NEW YORK – Norman Lear, a show business legend and full-throated humanist, set out last spring to rent a modest apartment in the Bronx.

The landlord welcomed this incognito white man with a couple of offers.

Not so lucky was an African-American man who had come to him the day before. The landlord, insisting nothing was available, brusquely turned that man away.

This undercover mission, as well as Lear’s subsequent blowing the whistle on the landlord, was filmed for “America Divided,” a star-driven, eye-opening probe into systemic inequality in the U.S. today not only in housing but also education, health care, labor, criminal justice and voting rights.

The five-week docuseries, which premieres 8 p.m. Friday on Epix, employs the 94-year-old Lear (armed with a hidden camera) as one of its correspondents as well as an executive producer.

“I’m happy to have reached the 1 percent,” said Lear, back in his native New York City to shoot his report, “but I started as a kid in the Depression whose father was serving (prison) time.

But what was wonderful about America was it offered me opportunity. And it promised that opportunity to everybody else, regardless of the color of their skin.

After all these years, that promise has yet to be delivered on. I care about that.”

Author to discuss ‘Mourning Lincoln’ Oct. 13 at NIU DAILY CHRONICLE

Noted historian and author Martha Hodes will discuss her latest book on how ordinary people mourned the death of Abraham Lincoln during the 13th annual Lincoln Lecture, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, in Northern Illinois University’s Altgeld Auditorium.

In “Mourning Lincoln: The Assassination and the Aftermath of the Civil War,” Hodes details the responses of ordinary individuals – Northern and Southern, white and black, soldiers and civilians, women and men – through their diaries and personal correspondence. Those responses paint a portrait of an extremely fractured nation, foreshadowing the future battles over Reconstruction and making the nation whole again.

“Mourning Lincoln” has earned acclaim from the Wall Street Journal as a Best Nonfiction Book (2015) in addition to receiving the 2016 Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize and the 2016 Avery O. Craven Award from the Organization of American Historians.

The book also has been selected as a long list finalist for the 2015 National Book Awards for Nonfiction.

Hodes, a professor of history at New York University, teaches courses on race, the Civil War and Reconstruction, and 19th century United States.

She also teaches additional courses in history-writing, such as Writing the Civil War, History and Storytelling, Biography and History, Reconstructing Lives and Experimental History.

She has published articles in numerous scholarly journals, written for the New York Times, the Los Angeles

Concerto competition applications due DAILY CHRONICLE Northern Illinois University’s Community School of the Arts invites musicians 18 years and younger to compete in the annual CSA Sinfonia Concerto Competition. The deadline for applications is Oct. 17. Auditions are scheduled in the Recital Hall of the NIU Music Building on Nov. 14, beginning at 5 p.m.

The winner receives a $200 cash prize and performs the concerto with the youth orchestra, as a special guest at the Sinfonia concert on May 3. Linc Smelser directs the CSA Sinfonia youth orchestra, a full orchestra that has performed varied and exciting repertoire in NIU’s Boutell Memorial Concert Hall every year since 1999.

Musicians wishing to compete must live within a 75-miles radius of DeKalb

and submit an application on or before Oct. 17. Each competitor will perform one movement of a standard solo concerto or an appropriate one-movement composition from memory. Auditions are limited to eight minutes and players are expected to bring their own accompanist.

The NIU Community School of the Arts is a nonprofit arts organization sponsored by the College of Visual and Performing Arts at NIU. More than 50 teachers conduct ensembles, classes and private lessons in music and art. CSA teachers include NIU faculty and students, as well as artists and musicians from the local community.

28 Get potassium from foods, not supplements Dear Dr. K: I have high blood pressure.

Should I take a potassium supplement?

Dear Reader: This is a great question, but before I answer, let me take a step back to explain the connection between potassium and blood pressure.

Tens of thousands of years ago, our ancestors survived on wild animals and a variety of plant foods. This diet delivered plenty of potassium but scant sodium. Today, the average American diet contains about twice as much sodium as potassium, as a result of the high levels of salt in processed foods. This sodium-potassium imbalance is thought to be a major contributor to high blood pressure.

Now, back to your question. The short answer is no, you should not take potassium supplements unless your doctor prescribes them. People on blood pressure medications, in particular, need to be careful about potassium supplements.

Many blood pressure medications can lower your potassium level. Very low potassium can lead to dangerous heart rhythms.

Many commonly prescribed diuretics lower potassium levels. If you are taking potassium-lowering diuretics, your doctor will check the level of potassium in your blood. If it is low, the doctor may prescribe potassium supplements.

But other types of diuretics and other commonly prescribed blood pressure medicines can raise potassium levels. Examples of such drugs are the diuretic called spironolactone, the drugs called ACE inhibitors and drugs called angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). Common painkillers such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve) can raise potassium levels. Abnormally high potassium levels also can cause dangerous heart rhythms.

If you are taking any medicines known to either raise or lower your potassium to dangerous levels, your doctor periodically

Keeping that level in the correct range is important. This mineral plays a key role in the function of nerves and muscles, including heart muscle.

Your kidneys help regulate potassium levels in your blood. They tend to keep your potassium level from going abnormally high or low. But age and medical conditions may impair kidney function.

The FDA limits over-the-counter potassium supplements to less than 100 milligrams. However, grocery stores carry salt substitutes that may contain much higher amounts of potassium. People trying to curb their sodium intake may use salt substitutes.

That’s a bad idea if you take a blood pressure medicine that tends to raise potassium levels.

Your best bet is to get your potassium from foods instead of pills. Many fruits and vegetables are rich in potassium. Spinach, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, bananas and avocado all are good sources. Potassium-rich diets help control blood pressure and also lower your risk of stroke.

Another connection between potassium and high blood pressure is a rare condition of the adrenal glands that can cause both high blood pressure and very low blood potassium levels.

So if you have high blood pressure, ask your doctor what your potassium level is. If the doctor hasn’t checked your potassium, gently suggest it might be a good idea.

Dear Abby: My DEAR ABBY husband recently disclosed to me Jeanne he was sexually Phillips abused by his cousin, who is the same age, when he was in high school. She blackmailed him by threatening to tell everyone he had raped her. She used this power over him to coax sexual favors but never intercourse.

After a year of looking for help, he confided in his mother, but she ended up getting drunk and telling the whole family about the situation.

Luckily, he was able to convince most of them it was “just the alcohol talking.” At that point, his cousin finally found a boyfriend and stopped blackmailing him.

This all happened five years ago. He hasn’t lived in the same state as his mom or the abuser in three years. I can tell by confiding in me he feels much better, but I’m worried he blames himself for his mother’s alcoholism and his ruined relationships with his close friends in high school. – Concerned Spouse Dear Concerned Spouse: Encourage your husband to talk to a licensed psychotherapist about what was done to him. Victims sometimes blame themselves. I seriously doubt his mother’s alcohol abuse had anything to do with him. That she betrayed his confidence instead of helping him was terrible. A therapist can explain all this to him, and help him to see things clearly so he can decide how to proceed.

BY TERRY AND KIM KOVEL KOVELS.COM In past centuries before the invention of the camera, heroes and celebrities were remembered with figurines, prints and plates, and mugs of glass or ceramics. Coronations, royal weddings, major exhibitions, and historic events were commemorated by souvenirs with depictions of the people or the event. The Royal Doulton Co. made many figurines of attractive imaginary people and animals.

The company started making several sizes of small character jugs honoring fictional as well as real people in 1930, and it still makes a few new ones each year. Most sell today for under $100. Thirty limited edition loving cups and jugs (pitchers) about 10 inches high were made from 1930 to 1938 and two that honor Queen Elizabeth, one at her coronation in 1953, the other at her Silver Jubilee in 1977.

The pieces designed by Charles Noke, molded with raised figures and decorated in bright colors, are rare. Each has a special mark on the bottom explaining the history of the hero and events pictured.

The standard Royal

Doulton Co. mark, a lion and crown, also is used.

These limited editions were selling for more than $1,000 each until about 10 years ago, when all Doulton prices fell. A commemorative Admiral Lord Nelson loving cup auctioned at Skinner Auctions in Boston in 2015 for $800. Lord Nelson was a naval hero who fought in many naval battles and seemed unstoppable. He lost an arm in one battle, an eye in another, and he was finally killed at the Battle of Trafalgar Bay in 1805. On one side of the loving cup is a picture of the one-armed Admiral in his ship; a sinking ship and lifeboat with sailors is on the other side.

*** Q: I’m looking for information on a Wagner Ware aluminum pan No. 3680 with “N” below the number. It’s divided into three parts. What is its use and its value?

A: Wagner Manufacturing Co. was founded by brothers Milton M. and Bernard P. Wagner in Sydney, Ohio, in 1891. In the beginning, the company made cast-iron ware. Aluminum cookware was first made in 1894. Members of the family ran the business until 1953, when it was sold to the Randall Co. of Cincinnati. The pot was divided into three sections, so you could cook three different vegetables at the same time. Its value is $75 to $100. *** Q: I have a child’s dresser made of walnut with a scalloped base and three drawers. The sides of the drawers are fastened together with rods or dowels.

I’ve heard of dovetailed drawers but have never seen anything like this. How old do you think the dresser is?

A: Most furniture was completely handmade until the early 1800’s, when newly invented machines were first used to make furniture. But the machinery couldn’t make dovetailed joints to join wood, so they still had to be made by hand. In 1867, Charles B. Knapp of Waterloo, Wis., invented a joint-making machine. The Knapp Dovetailing Co. was founded in Northampton, Mass., in 1870. Knapp joints, also called scallop and peg or scallop and dowel joints like the ones in your drawer, were made beginning in 1871. They were out of favor by about 1900 when machinery was invented to make dovetailed joints. *** Q: I have a fitted wooden box, about 17 by 11 by 10 inches in size, which holds six large and six smaller glass medicine bottles. The bottles have gilt decorations and stoppers. The box is lined with red velvet, which is partially decayed. It was brought from Czechoslovakia more than 100 years ago. Is it worth anything other than as a family heirloom?

A: It is an apothecary or medicine box. In the late 19th century, doctors and apothecaries made house calls and medicines were mixed on location.

Originally it probably included dosage spoons. Any old set of 12 bottles from 1880 or earlier is valuable.

The gilt decoration on the bottles adds value, but the condition of the velvet lining lessens the value.

A medicine chest with labeled bottles, ointment jars and other items recently sold for $240. *** Q: I bought an antique typewriter a number of years ago because I’d never seen anything like it before. I was a secretary for years but had no idea how this machine would ever be useful. Printed on the case is “The Oliver Standard Visible Writer No.

9, Patent Nov. 5th 1912, The Printype Oliver Typewriter.” It seems to be in good working order, but it “weighs a ton.” I need to downsize and would like to sell it. Does it have any value?

A: Oliver Typewriter Co. was located in Chicago and was started by Rev. Thomas Oliver, who designed a typewriter to write his sermons on. The first Oliver typewriters were made in 1895. This model has been called “butterfly-style” because of its vertical type bars, but its weight of more than 30 pounds is nothing like a butterfly. The company was bought by the British Oliver Typewriter Co. in 1928 and that company made Oliver typewriters until 1959. The condition dictates the price. A working typewriter in excellent condition can sell for $75 to $200. *** Tip: If you store fabrics in paper, be sure it is acid-free. An acidic paper can discolor a fabric in a year, damage it within three years. *** Terry Kovel and Kim Kovel answer questions sent to the column.
