DeKalb street party situation is handled with aplomb

Footage of a party in the 800 block of Kimberly Drive that spilled out into the street this weekend has attracted some attention online.

A video posted on the YouTube account of a local man who is known for taking videos of local police – along with other scenes – had been viewed more than 13,600 times as of Tuesday afternoon. It shows a large crowd of people milling around outside one of the large apartment buildings on the street.

(If you do watch some of the videos, be warned they contain foul language.)

Most of the people shown in the high-definition video are just standing around, but a couple of young men seem interested in showing off. At one point, while one of them mugs for a police officer’s video camera, another comes up behind him and starts flashing gang signs.

Several people have reached out to ask us about the video. Some seemed scandalized, others used it as a platform to spew racist nonsense.

It’s not uncommon for parties to spill into the street in DeKalb – it’s been happening since I got here – but I figured I’d give DeKalb Deputy Police Chief John Petragallo a call about it.

Petragallo said police are accustomed to dealing with such situations. They usually show up when parties get too large and out of hand, with 50 to hundreds of people out on the street.

That’s probably what happened on Kimberly.

With the crowd outside, a vehicle pulled up and started playing loud music, someone jumped on the vehicle and started dancing, then other people started dancing in the street, Petragallo said.

Actually, sounds like it would have been a pretty interesting scene, as long as you weren’t trying to drive your car anywhere.

“This was not a violent group, it was just a street party,” Petragallo said.

When DeKalb and Northern Illinois University police showed up, “people were asked to get out of the street, [officers] were not met with resistance and folks left the street. The crowd in general was pretty cooperative with police. There was just a couple outliers.”

No one was arrested as a result of the interaction, Petragallo said, and from what I saw, there was no reason.

Police can’t just arrest you for flashing gang signs at them, although they’ll probably look at you funny, as an officer holding a video camera did after one young man’s performance. (Why would you want to be on police video flashing gang signs? Not sure.)

“We don’t like to see [gang signs], but … the First Amendment protects a lot of that speech,” Petragallo said.

At the most, what you see on the video could lead to a “disorderly house” citation that usually leads to the city’s Crime-Free Housing Bureau getting involved. But no one has been cited in connection with the weekend festivities and probably they will not be, Petragallo said.

The video was interesting to watch, but in the end, the issue was resolved without anyone being hurt or arrested. That’s the outcome we should hope for when police and the public interact.

Preserve created on site of former flood-prone mobile home park

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The DeKalb County Forest Preserve’s newest addition could soon become one of its most popular.

The 60-acre Sycamore Forest Preserve, 955 E. State St., Sycamore, could open this year if weather allows workers to patch and widen roads in the former Evergreen Village Mobile Home Park. The improvements are needed for parking lots, picnic shelters and a trailhead for the Great Western Trail.

Most of the county’s forest preserves are in rural areas, but this one will be located on Route 64 not far from downtown Sycamore.

“It could be the most popular [forest preserve site] due to its location,” DeKalb County Board Chairman Mark Pietrowski Jr. said. “I think it will be heavily used.”

Although it has yet to open to the public, some people have already explored the area beyond the “no trespassing” signs.

Throughout the summer, bicyclists and others could be seen traversing the recreation area.

The Sycamore Forest Preserve will include hiking and cross country ski trails, a fishing pond, picnic areas and two open-air shelters along with 30 acres of flood-plain prairie planted in 2015, DeKalb County Forest Preserve Superintendent Terry Hannan said.

Demolition of the 123 mobile homes started in 2014 after the county received $7.1 million in state and federal emergency management grants to buy the flood-prone property, relocate about 400 residents and return the area to open space. That process included removing some of the interior roadways and the site’s wastewater treatment plant. It also required digging up septic tanks and capping wells.

The mobile home park was in the flood plain of the east branch of the south branch of the Kishwaukee River.

Great Western Trail, which runs along the abandoned Chicago Great Western Railway corridor from Sycamore to St. Charles.

Earlier this month, the DeKalb County Forest Preserve District commissioners awarded a $316,300 bid to Curran Contracting Co. for land improvements at the site, which will include widening roads and building parking lots, Hannan said. Crews have been at the preserve in recent days working on the site.

An anonymous donation of $100,000 will be used to help with the cost of land improvement, County Administrator Gary Hanson said.

The preserve could be opened to the public later this year, depending

on how quickly construction proceeds, which depends on the weather, Pietrowski said.

Sycamore Mayor Ken Mundy said he has been keeping close tabs on the project since it started. He praised the work that DeKalb County officials have done with the site so far and said he’s eager to see it open to the public.

“It’s just a neat place,” Mundy said. “It’s beautiful out there.”

In addition to what will soon be a public recreation area, Mundy said he was glad to see the flooding problems mitigated. Over the years, Sycamore rescue crews were called many times to the former mobile home park often for flooding, with

residents being forced to evacuate.

He said it was a miracle that no one had died during such emergencies.

County Board member Anita Jo Turner, a D-District 4, said the complicated project of relocating the mobile home park’s residents and transforming the site into a forest preserve has gone smoothly, although there have been some minor problems, including some vandalism and theft at the site. A heron carved from a tree stump was stolen, although two other tree-stump works of art remain at the facility, an owl and a mushroom.

“It was a long process and there are a lot of people who deserve credit for it,” Turner said. “It’s going to be so nice to have it done.”

Board members interviewed two candidates Tuesday during a special school board meeting that was held mostly in closed session.

Board President Victoria Newport would not say much about the candidates, only to confirm that they are men and are both retired school district leaders. She also would not comment on the circumstances that necessitated a temporary superintendent, after last week’s announcement that Doug Moeller was put on paid administrative leave.

“I won’t comment on personnel matters,” she said.

She said the two candidates – who were interviewed via Skype – were referred by “community members who’ve been in the education system.”

The first person school board members were preparing to interview was Bradley Hawk, who currently develops online courses for NIU’s school business management program and was at one point an assistant professor in the university’s department

Hawk is a former superintendent of Burlington Central School District 301 in Burlington. The district has one high, two middle and four elementary

schools, according to its website.

A woman who identified herself as Hawk’s wife answered the phone Tuesday night and said her husband was unavailable to take the call. She said she could not confirm that Hawk was seeking to be interim superintendent.

Newport said the virtual interviews were conducted because each

of the men had previous commitments that kept them from attending the meeting in person.

She said a decision on an interim superintendent should come “very soon.”

The district placed Moeller on leave after Michele Albano, the new DeKalb High School principal, was granted an order of protection against Moeller on Sept. 19. In documents she filed with the Kane County Circuit Court seeking the order, she alleged that Moeller stalked her near her Elgin home, displayed a gun to her, and threatened to ruin her career, all after she turned down his advances.

Board member Howard Solomon said that the search to temporarily replace Moeller had to extend outside the district because no internal candidates were qualified for the role.

“In order to be legal and within the boundaries of what the regional office of education insists that we do, we have to have somebody with a certification for superintendent,” he said.

“Nobody internal has it.”

While the law allows the school board to interview the candidates in closed session, a vote on actually giving them the job would have to be done publicly. The regular school board meeting is scheduled for Oct. 4 and Newport said she’s “not sure” whether an interim would be voted on at that meeting.

Transier was appointed because the DeKalb County Public Defender’s Office had a conflict as it had represented members of Timm’s family in other cases.

In setting bond, the judge noted that Timm was on probation for two felonies, including one for aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a child younger than 13.

In March 2013, Timm pleaded guilty to aggravated criminal sexual abuse in exchange for a second count of the same charge being dropped as

part of a plea deal with prosecutors that spared him from prison.

He was sentenced to 48 months of probation.

Timm, a registered sex offender, was sentenced to 18 months of probation and 30 days in the county jail in August 2007 for misdemeanor sexual exploitation of a child, or exposing himself, public records show. When the offense occurred in November 2005, he was 20 and the victim was 13, according to the Illinois State Police Sex Offender Registry.

Timm is next due in court Oct. 3.

Eleanor Epperly VanAelst “Ellie,” passed away Sept.

25, 2016, in the comfort of her home at Heritage Woods of DeKalb, surrounded by her loving family.

She is survived by her daughters, Kristin (Tim) Forster of Sycamore, IL, and Rachel (Tom) Goetz of Park Ridge, IL; her sister, Barbara Been; and niece, Stacey Been of St. Charles, IL; and her grandchildren, Nathaniel, Nicole, Conner, Hannah and Jack.

Ellie was a war baby born June 5, 1944, in Springfield, IL, to parents John and Mary (Bridge) Epperly. She lived most of her life in beautiful Geneva, IL, and was a talented artist. Ellie loved to cook, garden, golf, read, talk politics, watch classic movies, antique shop and, in the last year of her life, became an avid Wii bowler. She was a die-hard Cubs fan and always said she would die the year the Cubs would win the World Series (Go Cubs!). Ellie was a strongwilled individual and fought a heroic fight for many years against heart and kidney

SYCAMORE – The Sycamore Park District board of commissioners voted Tuesday to divide its sale of $10 million in project bonds into two segments to minimize dollars lost to interest payments.

Voters in 2014 approved a property tax increase to finance selling $9 mllion in bonds to pay for projects in the park district’s Vision 20/20 plan and cover increased operating expenses.

Board President Ted Strack said the board previously passed an ordinance to authorize the issuance of up to $10 million in bonds.

The ordinance that passed Tuesday authorized the sale of up to $6 million out of that $10 million, although board members plan to issue $5 million to start.

“The total amount of bonds we’re going to pursue is the same,” Strack said. “We’re just now granting ourselves more time to issue a portion of those bonds.”

Dan Gibble, the executive director of the district, said the board would issue $5 million of its bonds in April or May 2017, and then it would issue the last $5 million in May or June 2018.

“The prior ordinance lumped it into one; this allows us now to split it,” Gibble said. “That way we don’t borrow all at once, and we save a lot of money on interest payments.”

Strack said selling half the bonds at a time means not having to incur interest on all the debt at once, which is beneficial when relying on tax receipts to begin making payments.

“If you issue $10 million in debt today, you’d have to pay interest on $10 million in debt starting right now,” he said.

Strack said another plus to paying interest on half the bonds for the first year is that the funds that would have gone to paying for the rest of the inter-

est will instead be available for other expenses.

Strack said board members sought estimates on what the interest payments would be and are confident that they will be able to keep steady interest expenses.

“One of the things we’ve been very adamant about as we’ve gone through this process is that the payment amount is essentially constant yearover-year,” he said. “We know exactly what our payments are going to be year to year, and we have the revenues to make that payment.”

Strack said with the first grant application expected to go through this December, construction of trail connections along Airport Road should begin next spring, and soon after workers will begin to lay dirt for the new community center, dog park, sled hill and splash pad.

Chicago-based religious order sued

CHICAGO – A 51-year-old Colorado man who said he was sexually abused when he was about 7 years old by a teenager who later became a prominent Roman Catholic priest – one known for his work with at-risk kids – on Monday sued the Chicago-based religious order to which the priest belongs, seeking the release of all records related to allegations of abuse by any of its priests.

Eric Johnson’s lawsuit names the Claretians Missionaries, a 165-year-old order that has about 3,000 priests and brothers in about 60 countries, as the defendant. The suit filed in Cook County Circuit Court says that the Rev. Bruce Wellems was about 15 when the abuse occurred in the early 1970s. Johnson said the abuse occurred over about a year.

Several phone messages left for Wellems on a private phone and at the Claretians headquarters were not returned Monday. He has previously acknowledged inappropriately touching of a minor when he himself was younger than 18, but he has also said he never again abused a child, including never as an adult and never as a priest. Johnson said he became alarmed in the mid-1990s when he heard reports about Wellems’ work with various children’s groups, and so he wrote letters to the Claretians and the Archdiocese of Chicago in 1995 detailing his allegations against Wellems. That’s when he received the assurances, he said.

Johnson’s lawyer, Marc Pearlman, said it’s particularly difficult to obtain information about priests from religious orders because of a degree of independence they maintain from their local archdiocese.

“Religious orders continue to fly under the radar” when it comes to allegations of abuse, he said. Priests in such orders are largely subject to the control of their orders, but it is the archdiocese that grants or withdraws permission for a priest to say Mass and perform other priestly functions.

In response to an email Monday, a spokeswoman for the Chicago archdiocese issued a statement saying, “Wellems is a Claretian religious order priest who has not had an assignment in the Archdiocese since 2012 and has not been granted faculties to minister here.

Debate renews attention on Trump’s tax returns

The Associated Press JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Donald Trump said “you don’t learn that much from tax returns,” a dubious assertion that has renewed attention on his refusal to release documents that could shed light on his tax rate, charitable giving and foreign business ties.

Trump’s Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, was happy to seize on the issue, questioning in the first presidential debate what Trump is trying to hide by bucking decades of campaign tradition in keeping his 1040s private. She referred to the several years in which it is known that Trump paid nothing in federal taxes.

“So if he’s paid zero, that means zero for troops, zero for vets, zero for schools or health,” Clinton said.

Republican Trump responded by saying avoiding taxes “makes me smart,” adding whatever money he did pay “would be squandered” anyway.

Trump told CNN after the Monday night debate that “of course” he’s paid federal taxes in other years, but Democrats pounced just the same.

“So what does that make the rest of us?

Since 1976, all major party nominees for president have released their tax returns. Clinton has disclosed nearly 40 years’ worth. Both of the candidates for vice president, Democrat Tim Kaine and Trump’s running mate, Mike Pence, have released theirs, too.

A recent Associated Press-GfK poll found that 45 percent of likely but undecided voters

said it was very or extremely important for candidates to release their tax returns. But voters are divided along party lines. While more than six in 10 Democrats said it was very or extremely important, fewer than three in 10 Republicans said the same.

The billionaire New Yorker has said for months that because his tax returns are under a “routine audit” and have been for nearly 15 years, he is following the advice of his attorneys by keeping them private.

Former IRS officials have expressed skepticism that anyone would be audited so frequently, and they and other tax experts say there’s no prohibition on Trump releasing his returns even if he is.

Trump’s son, Donald Jr., recently told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that the audits weren’t the real issue. Releasing the documents, he said, would lead to “every person in the country asking questions that would distract” from his father’s “main message.”

Indeed, tax experts say the documents could provide significant insight about the Republican nominee, including an assessment of whether Trump has overstated – or understated – his income. The documents would also reveal how Trump has used various deductions, write-offs and loopholes in his stated effort to pay “as little” in taxes “as possible.”

The returns would also shed light on the extent to which Trump is an “ardent philanthropist,” as his company’s website once claimed.

Trump’s charitable giving has come into question during the campaign. He has made no personal contributions to his foundation since 2008, and The Washington Post has found instances where he may have used the charity to pay off expenses incurred by his businesses.

Battle for besieged Syrian city of Aleppo intensifies

BEIRUT – With international diplomacy in tatters and the U.S. focused on its election, the Syrian government and its Russian allies are seizing the moment to wage an all-out campaign to recapture Aleppo, unleashing the most destructive bombing of the past five years and pushing into the center of the Old City.

Desperate residents describe horrific scenes in Syria’s largest city and onetime commercial center, with hospitals and underground shelters hit by indiscriminate airstrikes that the U.N. said may amount to a war crime.

Debris covers streets lined with bombed-out buildings, trapping people in their neighborhoods and hindering rescue workers. On Tuesday, activists reported at least 23 people killed in airstrikes on two districts in the rebel-held part of Aleppo.

The battle for Aleppo is unlikely to be an easy one for government forces because the isolated rebels say they are determined to “fight until the end” to defend their neighborhoods. Insurgents outside the city could also attack government troops to try to reduce pressure on comrades trapped inside.

If government forces and their allies capture the rebel-held eastern neighborhoods, it would be a turning point in the 5½-year-old civil war that has killed more than 250,000 people and displaced half of Syria’s population.

Over the course of the conflict, the government has slowly regained control of major cities. Its aim appears to be securing what some analysts call “useful Syria” – a portion containing the four largest cities of Aleppo, Damascus,

Homs and Hama, along with its Mediterranean coast.

Aleppo is the last of the major cities still being contested, and it could take government forces between six months and a year to capture it, unless they aim to “annihilate” the politically significant city, a Western diplomat told The Associated Press. The envoy, who is familiar with the cease-fire talks that have faltered, spoke on the condition of anonymity because of his government’s regulations.

Once all of “useful Syria” is in government hands, international diplomacy would have to determine the fate of the jihadi-controlled northwest and those areas dominated by the main Kurdish militia and the Islamic State militant group.

President Bashar Assad “doesn’t want a negotiation,” the diplomat said, adding that “the Russians wouldn’t or couldn’t stop him” from attacking Aleppo.

In Russia, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told Syria’s ambassador that Moscow has “a firm intention to continue providing assistance to the Syrian government in fighting terrorism and to help achieve the soonest possible political settlement of the Syrian crisis.”

Opposition forces control almost half of Aleppo, the only major city where rebels hold such a large area. The U.N. says more than 250,000 people live in the rebel-held areas, while more than 1 million are in the government-controlled part that is usually subjected to shelling.

Assad’s government controls the capital of Damascus, except for two small neighborhoods. It also controls all of Homs and Hama, the third- and fourth-largest cities.

Policy points take backseat to attacks

Recent polls have shown that more than half the electorate holds a negative view of both Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump.

So it’s no surprise that they spent most of their time on stage at Monday’s first presidential debate at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, attacking each other. After all, when the majority of voters dislike you, you have to make them dislike your opponent more.

But the attacks didn’t go very far in terms of telling us anything new, and we suspect they did little to change anyone’s allegiance.

We heard many of the same lines: Clinton cast Trump as a man who has embraced political conspiracy theories such as “birtherism” and climate change denial, who refuses to disclose his income tax returns and has in some years paid no federal tax. As the Democrats did with Barry Goldwater in 1964, Clinton cast Trump as a man unfit to be trusted with the country’s nuclear arsenal.

For good measure, Clinton pointed out disparaging remarks Trump has made about women, which led to Trump’s attacking Rosie O’Donnell yet again.

Trump cast Clinton as a career politician who has come up with scant solutions for the country’s problems in 30 years.

Trump played up President Bill Clinton’s approval of the North American Free Trade Agreement, which Trump says has killed American manufacturers, and Hillary Clinton’s own early support for the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement. Trump blamed Clinton and President Obama for the rise of ISIS and their inability to stop it.

As expected, Trump brought up Clinton’s deliberate attempt to avoid public scrutiny by using a private server for her emails as Secretary of State. Just what was in those 33,000 emails she deleted, Trump (and many others) would like to know.

Actual plans the candidates have for policy and making Americans’ lives better tended to take a backseat to these negative narratives, most of which, most voters already know.

There were some policy highlights: Trump is strongest when he talks trade, and on the need for the U.S. to renegotiate deals with trading partners, he spoke clearly. He also made clear points about his philosophy on foreign policy when he talked of how the country could not be the world’s police officer and its allies in NATO and around the world had to pay their fair share.

Clinton was mostly calm and measured, refusing to be rattled by repeated interruptions and interjections from Trump. She’s emphasized how she wants to invest in middle-class America, and contrasted her income tax plan with that of Trump’s, the latter of which she claims would increase the debt and eliminate jobs. Her response to Trump’s questions about her “stamina” was a strong defense of her credentials.

The main focus of this debate, though, seemed to be less on plans and more on attacks against the other candidate. At this point in the campaign, it would be more helpful to know how the candidates will lead us.

The negative story lines are what have made both candidates seem unappealing to voters.

Waiting for next big invention

To the Editor: You don’t miss what you never had.

What would you miss if it did not exist? How about air-conditioning?

Before air-conditioning, we found hand-held cardboard fans, imprinted with and supplied by the local funeral parlor, in church among the hymn books in the rack in the pew in front of us. What a distraction it was for the preacher as we waved the fans trying to cool off, as he preached to us about eternal damnation and hellfire. The heat must have lent credence, however, to what he described as our afterlife if we did not mend our ways.

A current radio commercial asks, “What if electricity had not been invented?” Think of all we enjoy because of electricity.

When we give credit to one person for his creative genius, we should remember that many times he is the one who perfected it, but others also worked on the same ideas. Someone eventually would have come up with it. A wise person once said, “It’s amazing how much can get done if we quit worrying about who gets the credit.”

Steve Jobs, the creative technology genius, receives much credit that others, working with him, also deserve recognition. Thinking outside the box is the key.

Some inventions came about by accident, or

a nocturnal dream, as it did with Elias Howe, inventor of the sewing machine. During an impasse, he dreamed he was to be the main course at a cannibal dinner.

The cannibals were dancing around the fire, moving spears up and down that had a hole near the top. Springing from bed, he added a hole in the needle on his invention. Success.

Sometimes an error in calculation spells success. A scientist, working on a super strong adhesive that would bond two things together permanently, accidentally developed a super-weak adhesive and Post-It notes were born.

The old rural telephone party lines and the rubber-necking seem so passé with Facebook, Twitter, e-mail, etc., with which to communicate.

I’d miss email the most. The telephone acts like a spoiled child having a tantrum, demanding attention immediately. Not the more courteous email, which never bothers me when I’m in the shower or asleep. Emails just sit there and wait for me to find them at my convenience.

I’m waiting for some creative genius to invent the next new gadget.

Remember, if you can conceive it, you can achieve it.

has shredded the Obama administration’s attempt to win Russian and Syrian compliance with a cessation of hostilities.

So naturally reporters asked senior officials as the attack was getting underway how the United States would respond.

“I don’t think ... this is the time to say where we will go from here,” one answered. Said another: “We’re waiting to see what the Russians come back with.”

In other words: Hem, haw.

By Monday, the administration’s response seemed clear: It will hotly condemn the assault on Aleppo, but do absolutely nothing to stop it.

On the contrary, Secretary of State John F. Kerry insisted he will continue to go back to the regime of Vladimir Putin with diplomatic offers, hoping it will choose to stop bombing.

“The United States makes abso-

lutely no apology for going the extra mile to try and ease the suffering of the Syrian people,” he grandly declared after a meeting Thursday on Syria. By “extra mile,” he doesn’t mean actual U.S. steps to protect civilians – just more futile and debasing appeals to Moscow.

The Putin and Bashar al-Assad regimes are well aware that the only U.S. action President Barack Obama has authorized is diplomatic, and that they are therefore under no pressure to alter their behavior.

They already obtained, via Kerry, U.S. agreement to the principle that the Assad regime should remain in power while the United States and Russia join in fighting those rebels deemed to be terrorists.

The regime then took advantage of a mistaken bombing of Syrian soldiers in eastern Syria to launch the assault on Aleppo, and Russia joined in. If it succeeds, Damascus will

have essentially won the civil war and will have no real need for the negotiations Kerry said the cease-fire should lead to.

If the offensive stalls, Putin can send Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov back to renew the deal with Kerry.

Either way, Russia wins.

The losers are the civilians trapped in eastern Aleppo – 250,000 to 275,000 human beings – who are cut off from supplies of food and medicine and being bombed mercilessly.

They are being offered the same choice the regime has successfully imposed on other towns across the country: surrender or starve.

Those who try to approach the evacuation corridors Russia said have been established are shot at.

They are, indeed, victims of barbarism – but the rhetoric of U.S. diplomats, and continued petitioning to Putin, won’t help them much.

How did Tulsa officer know Crutcher was a ‘bad dude’?

Dear Tulsa Police: I’m not here to debate the shooting of Terence Crutcher.

His death a little over a week ago at the hands of one of your officers has, of course, created a firestorm.

Betty Shelby has said she shot the 40-year-old man after he refused to communicate with her or obey her commands, walked back to his SUV, which was stopped in the middle of the road, and appeared to reach inside for a weapon.

Crutcher’s family and their attorneys said video of the shooting, which was released last week, tells a different story. It shows Crutcher walking with his hands up. And he couldn’t have been reaching into the car for anything, they say, because the video shows the driver’s-side window where he was standing, was closed. Crutcher had no weapon, although you’ve said you did find PCP in the SUV. But again, I’m not here to argue about the shooting. I’m just curious about something I heard on the video right before Crutcher was killed. The footage was shot from a police heli-

See, I don’t like bad dudes and I want to avoid them if I can. That copter was circling at ... what? ...

100 feet, maybe 200 feet, above the action? Yet your officer was able to discern Crutcher’s character from that distance.

That’s impressive. But then, this isn’t the only time we’ve seen police – and even a certain police wannabe – identify the bad dudes with amazing skill.

In 2014, a South Carolina State trooper somehow knew Levar Jones was a bad dude, even though he was just complying with an order to produce his driver’s license.

That same year, a Cleveland

Police officer somehow knew Tamir Rice was a bad dude, even though he was just playing in the park with a toy gun.

In 2012, George Zimmerman somehow knew Trayvon Martin was a bad dude, even though he was just walking along the street, minding his own business.

Yet last year, Jesse Kidder, a rookie police officer in New Richmond, Ohio, somehow knew Michael Wilcox wasn’t a bad dude, even though he was wanted for murder, even though he led police on a long car chase, even though he refused commands to get down on the ground, even though he was believed to be armed, even though he rushed at the officer crying, “Shoot me! Shoot me, or I’ll shoot you!”

Me, I’d have thought: “This is a bad dude.” I’d have shot him. Officer Kidder did not.

Recognizing bad dudes is a valuable skill. So I’m hoping you’ll share some pro tips.

Maybe the officer in the copter knew Crutcher was a bad dude because he was a big guy? But that

doesn’t make sense. Lots of people are big. Many cops are big. And Trayvon Martin was a slightly built 17-year-old. Tamir Rice was only 12.

Is there a bad dude hand signal? A bad dude walk? A bad dude lapel pin?

Please share for your sake, if not for mine. People are already bringing race into this the way they do every little thing. They’re already suggesting your officer thought Crutcher was a “bad dude” just because he was a black dude. Come to think of it, Levar Jones,Tamir Rice and Trayvon Martin were also black, while Michael Wilcox, the deranged murder suspect, was not. Interesting coincidence, don’t you think?

Anyway, we need you to tell us the real story. Your officer wouldn’t have judged Terence Crutcher a “bad dude” just because he had dark skin, right?

I mean, come on. This is America.

“What Russia is sponsoring and doing” in the Syrian city of Aleppo “is barbarism,” U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power said on Sunday.

She’s right: For days, Russian and Syrian planes have rained bombs – including white phosphorus, cluster munitions and “bunker-busters” designed to penetrate basements – on the rebel-held side of the city. Hundreds of civilians have been killed; as many as half are children. U.N. special envoy Staffan de Mistura described “new heights of horror.”

Power said that “instead of helping get lifesaving aid to civilians, Russia and (Syria) are bombing the humanitarian convoys, hospitals and first responders who are trying desperately to keep people alive.”

It goes without saying that this war-crimes-rich offensive, which Syria’s U.N. ambassador said is aimed at recapturing east Aleppo,

Spartans tie with Geneseo

sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – Despite an early first half goal by Phillip Maillefer, the Sycamore soccer team couldn’t notch a win, tying Geneseo, 1-1.

The game was physical for most of the 80 minutes. The referees stopped the game early to warn each team about foul language and dissent. Later in the second half, a few minutes after Geneseo junior Dylan Hart tied the game with 19:24 left to play, Sycamore head coach David Bachta received a yellow card for dissent. While he may have gotten himself a yellow, Bachta said that his team is more focused on themselves than outside factors that they can’t control.

“We don’t even talk about officiating in training,” Bachta said. “We try to worry about ourselves. Calls are going to go our way and not go our way. The nice thing about soccer is that it is an 80-minute game. It’s not

like basketball where possession varies every 30 seconds. If you can maintain your performance, the calls will even out.”

Maillefer gave the Spartans (11-7-1) a one goal lead less than 10 minutes into the contest. The senior forward said that despite the physical nature of this game in particular, he tries to stay within his skill set as a player.

“You just push through it,” Maillefer said. “I was able to do my thing and try and make runs up the sidelines. The only problem with that is that you have to get back on defense at 150 percent because you can be out of position. We’ve had a problem with starting slow this year, so being able to get a goal early for us was nice.”

The Maple Leafs (5-5-3) had problems generating offense early. They trailed for 50 minutes before Hart found the back of the net in traffic to tie the game at 1. From that point on, their offense seemed to open up.

They almost took a 2-1 lead late on a

shot in traffic that beat the Sycamore defense, but ended up catching the middle of the left post and ricocheting back to Spartans keeper Patrik Smith.

“We’ve been working on our finishing touches,” Geneseo coach Ian Kline said. “We’re just happy with getting a ball off of a quality situation on goal. One of our problems this year for us has been that we can create good looks and opportunities, but can’t get the shot on net. That goal from Dylan [Hart] was big. He’s a player that has been moving up for us and playing well off the bench.”

The goal came in a moment of heavy foot traffic in front of the Sycamore goal. Hart was able to take a ball that came in to the back side and capitalize on the chance.

“I just tried not to put it over the goal,” Hart said. “I knew if I hit my target, it would be a goal.”

The Spartans will play next when they travel to Yorkville for a 4:30 p.m. tilt with the Foxes.

DeKALB – The DeKalb boys soccer team and Rochelle played to a scoreless first half on Tuesday night in DeKalb. That all changed when the Barbs went on a scoring spree to put away the Hubs, 3-0.

DeKalb (6-7-1, 2-2 NIB 12) and Rochelle (7-9, 2-2 NIB 12) both saw their fair chances at scoring in a first half that brought four shots on net for the Barbs and one for the Hubs. The Barbs continued to use their speedy strikers to push the ball up field and pressure the Hubs.

“Rochelle holds a really high back line and that caused us to get called for a lot of offsides,” DeKalb coach Brent McIntosh said. “We were constantly running north, north, north and we were getting called. We talked to them at halftime about running more east and west against their backline and then curling up and we did a much better job of that in the second half.”

Thirteen minutes into the second half is where those adjustments began to pay off for the Barbs. Lincoln Draper caught up to the long through pass to connect on a goal to finally end the game’s scoreless streak. Draper was assisted by Arben Redzepi. Another goal was added with 12:34 left in the game when Angel Martinez was assisted by Tristan Bujarski to give the Barbs a little more breathing room. A third goal was added by Bujarski just 2:30 minutes later to essentially put the Hubs away for good.

“Getting the clean sheet is always a goal for ours, but I couldn’t be happier with the way we adjusted and responded in the second half,” McIntosh said. “Our runs were much more creative and weren’t holding the ball as much.The combination of creativity and getting rid of the ball early was critical, I think, for at least two of those goals.”

Rochelle coach Brad Male recognized the adjustment DeKalb made that started to work against them in the second half.

“Overall, I think we played fairly well,” Male said. “They did move the ball a little better than us and we aren’t used to playing on a faster field like they are. Their forwards like to play in a bunch and use the through ball and capitalized on a few of them.

Once they got a little momentum, that carried them through the rest of the game.”

Maddie named starting QB for Huskies Ball State bringing tough front seven:

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Northern Illinois football coach Rod Carey announced on Tuesday that senior Anthony Maddie will take over as the starting quarterback.

Maddie sparked the Huskies’ offense in a comeback that fell short in the 28-23 loss to Western Illinois on Saturday.

“The competition certainly isn’t done by any stretch of the imagination,” Carey said. “The quarterback spot needs to be productive for us and Anthony came in and was productive – wasn’t productive enough, but more productive. ... You have to move the offense and it certainly moved more with him in there than Ryan (Graham), so that’s why we’re making the switch.”

Maddie, who missed last season due to back surgery, went 11 of 16 for 142 yards and a touchdown and ran for 35 yards in the loss to the Leathernecks and will replace the sophomore Graham when the Huskies play the conference opener at Ball State on Saturday.

“He’s a competitor and he wasn’t happy, but the other part with Ryan is he is a complete team guy,” Carey said of Graham. “While he was upset and

Kyle Fuller on IR; season over?

kfishbain@proffotballweekly.com Kyle Fuller’s season could be over because of a knee injury, as the Bears placed the third-year cornerback on injured reserve Tuesday.

New rules allow the Bears to bring one player back from injured reserve, so Fuller is eligible to practice after he spends at least six weeks on injured reserve. He would be able to return and play in a game two weeks later.

The 2014 first-round pick underwent a knee scope in August and returned to practice when the regular season began, but in a limited fashion. Fuller has been inactive for the first three weeks.

John Fox was asked about when Fuller could return on Monday and replied, “He has a sore knee. It has some medical things that kind of restrict you. When we get that healed up, he’ll go.”

Last season, Fuller started all 16 games and struggled early, and Vic Fangio commented that Fuller needed more confidence. He finished strong, though, with seven passes defensed

A Phil Emery draft pick for Mel Tucker’s defense in ’14, Fuller had quite the start to his NFL career, picking off two passes in his NFL debut in San Francisco in Week 2 that season after he replaced Charles Tillman. He had three forced fumbles and four total picks that season, but wasn’t as effec-

tive down the stretch, along with the rest of the “D.” Fuller’s athleticism has never been doubted, but his ability to play in Fangio’s man-to-man defensive backfield has been questioned, especially after seeing some positive play from Jacoby Glenn and fourth-round pick Deiondre’ Hall through the first three games, as well as slot corner Bryce Callahan.

If Fuller gets healthy and can come back in two months, he would probably have to compete to regain a starting job, and may be in that position for 2017, too, if he sits out the entire year.

If Hall and/or Glenn take advantage and continue to ascend, Fuller could be a trade option for the Bears in the offseason.

This increases the spotlight on Glenn and Hall. With five passes defensed, Glenn leads the team, but he gave up a few big plays against Dallas.

Hall surprisingly didn’t play any snaps on defense in Dallas. He has two passes defensed this season. Fuller’s injury is also a reminder of the Bears’ lack of depth and experience at corner outside Tracy Porter.

The Cardinals have been one of the best in the country when it comes to the front seven on defense.

They lead the nation in sacks (17) and are 18th in the country in rushing defense (97 yards per game). Teams are only averaging 2.9 yards per carry and converting 32 percent of third downs.

“They certainly lean toward attacking, whether they’re blitzing or not and they’re being disruptive and getting in the backfield,” Carey said. “Anytime you do those things, that can bounce your run game east-west and they pursue well to the football.”

The two teams will be playing for the Bronze Stalk Trophy, which is kept by the winner between Northern Illinois and Ball State, highlighting the agriculture of the two communities. Originally competing for it in 2008, the Cardinals (3-1) won the first meeting but the Huskies (0-4) have won seven straight – including a 59-41 shootout last year.

“It’s a good rivalry between us and Ball State – certainly we’ve been fortunate enough to be on the good side of that here as late, but a rivalry nonetheless,” Carey said.

Bears sign ex-Lions RB Bell With Jeremy Langford expected to miss four to six weeks, the Bears signed former Detroit Lions running back Joique Bell on Tuesday, just in time to prepare for this week’s opponents, the Lions.

Bell posted an Instagram of his contract signing with general manager Ryan Pace and director of football administration Joey Laine.

They also signed former Lions and Raiders defensive lineman C.J. Wilson, according to his agency.

The Bears also waived linebacker Jonathan Anderson and tight end Greg Scruggs.

Bell, 30, had 90 carries for 311 yards and four rushing touchdowns last season for Detroit to go along with 22 catches for 286 yards. It was his least productive season of his four as a Lions back.

From 2012 to ‘15, Bell had 2,235 rushing yards, a 4-yard rushing average, 22 rushing touchdowns and 161 receptions for the Lions.

Langford sprained his right ankle in Sunday night’s loss to the Cowboys, and Ka’Deem Carey missed the game because of a hamstring injury he suffered the previous week against the Eagles.

Bell, who has plenty of experience (and should know the Lions well), will complement rookie Jordan Howard in the Bears’ backfield on Sunday.

Wilson, 29, is a 6-foot-3, 290-pounder who appeared in eight games for the Lions in 2015 and four for the Raiders. He spent the preseason with the Saints.

Last week: lost 45-38 against Appalachian State (2-2) It’s been an up-and-down season for the Zips so far, and they’re struggling to keep other teams from scoring. In the past three games, they’re allowing 46.7 points per game.

Last week: won 27-24 against Wyoming (2-2) Am I taking crazy pills, or is Eastern Michigan 3-1 right now? Three wins are more than NIU and Bowling Green – the two teams that played in the MAC Championship last year – combined. The Eagles hadn’t won three games in a season since 2011.

8 – Buffalo (1-2)

10 – Bowling Green (1-3)

Last week: lost 77-3 at Memphis (3-0) Oh, how the mighty have fallen. The reigning MAC champs have allowed 77 points in a game twice this season and if North Dakota would have converted a late 2-point conversion, the Falcons very easily could be 0-4 right now.

11 – Miami (Ohio) (0-4)

Last week: won 23-20 against Army (3-1) Maybe the Bulls won’t be nearly as inept as people thought after they opened the season with a home loss to an FCS school.

Freshman quarterback Tyree Jackson threw a touchdown and ran for two, helping Buffalo score 17 unanswered points to win in overtime.

This week: at Boston College (2-2)

Last week: lost 27-20 at Cincinnati (3-1) While the RedHawks are one of two winless teams in the MAC – NIU being the other – the past three losses have all come by one possession. In fact, Cincinnati needed to rally late to steal away a win from Miami.

This week: against Ohio (2-2)

9 – NIU (0-4)

12 – Kent State (1-3)

Last week: lost 28-23 against Western Illinois (3-0) The loss to an in-state FCS school is probably the lowest point of Rod Carey’s tenure.

However, this team just has too much talent to not potentially right the ship.

Last week: lost 48-0 at No. 1 Alabama (4-0) Sure, the final score left much to be desired for the Golden Flashes. On the bright side, Kent State got a $1.5 million payday for the beatdown.

Kaneland ahead, 10-8. Yorkville (17-7, 3-1) never led again thanks to a big point from Jessica Weber (6 kills) for a 11-10 edge. The Foxes did force a tie at 15-15 behind two points from Jenna Fosnacht and a kill from Sydnei Avery, but could not find the consistency to build a run.

Filipski attempted a kill, and her attack skirted the edge of the net and fell onto Yorkville’s court for a 21-16 score.

The Knights cruised through the closing points and capped the night on an ace serve by Julianna Vassallo. Hannah Nauert finished with 17 assists, Nguyen made 18 digs, and Cameron Wyant added five blocks.

DeKalb tops Morris: The Barbs picked up a road win, 25-16, 25-22.

YORKVILLE – The Kaneland volleyball team overcame a flat second set to finish what the Knights started in Tuesday night’s Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference match at Yorkville.

The Knights (20-3) broke a 15-15 tie in the decisive set and took command for a 25-20, 16-25, 25-17 victory to take the lead in the NIB12 East Division race at 4-0 over the defending conference champs.

“They were blocking us quite a bit, so moving around and adjusting our sets really helped,” Kaneland coach Cyndi Violett said. “It feels good to go through and win because last year we came here and lost the Yorkville match, and that hurt us. Now we just have to make adjustments and become a different team.

Our conference is good, and everyone you play, you just never know.”

Kaneland took advantage of six Yorkville serving errors in Set 1, but came out flat in the next set to trail the Foxes 16-10. Despite a pair of kills by Alex Anderson and an ace serve from Jessica Nguyen, the Knights could not complete the two-game sweep.

Derrick Rose chirps; Rajon Rondo shows basketball IQ

jcowley@suntimes.com CHICAGO – One day into training camp, and Derrick Rose already is leading Rajon Rondo in an all-too familiar category.

Then again, “The Dumb Comment Meter” is one stat in the book Rose never has had a problem filling.

Meeting with New York reporters after his first practice with his new Knicks teammates Tuesday, Rose said the city of Chicago took him for granted.

“All I can do is just work on my game and hope that they continue to look,” the former Bulls point guard insisted.

Took him for granted?

“Hope they continue to look?”

What?

Considering all of the drama Rose put his hometown fan base through the past four years, as well as his organization, the last thing Rose should be doing is pointing fingers about who took who for granted.

Then again, reality isn’t one of Rose’s strengths.

As the Bulls players were finding out firsthand, not the only deficiency their former point guard carried onto the court.

Rondo is by no means an angel with some of his on-the-court antics, but what was quickly discovered Tuesday was that having a point guard with an actual high basketball IQ benefits everybody. Rose liked to insist he had

a basketball IQ, but he seemed to be the only one who shared that opinion.

There’s a reason coach Fred Hoiberg had to dummy-down the playbook last season, as well as constantly stay on Rose about defensive assignments and game plan.

Not a concern with Rondo.

“Recognition will be a big thing with this group,” Hoiberg said. “And I think we’ll be good with that with Rondo. He can survey the floor so well when he’s coming down, get us into a secondary type action. [Dwyane] Wade and Jimmy [Butler] have shown over the course of their careers that they can make plays and get into the paint. The big thing is playing off each other. With Rondo coming down the floor with the ball in his hands, you feel very good because he’s generally going to make the right play.”

That doesn’t mean Rondo has a better basketball skillset than Rose – pre- or post-knee surgery for Rose. What he does have, however, is a high IQ, a leadership voice, and the ability to help with the younger players.

“The biggest thing that I’ve been

When you have point guard out there who can get you into something and talk the way he does, that sets the tone for everybody.

Traits Butler already is embracing. “[Rondo] really sees things before they even develop out there on the basketball floor, so it makes everybody’s job a lot easier,” Butler said. “Like I always say, when you put good basketball players out there on the floor, you just go. Everything just falls into place, falls into line. You don’t have to worry about too much of anything. And with him he’s an incredible leader. He just wants everybody to be successful. He’s going to put you in position to be just that.”

With its extraordinary mix of speed and skill – and a good share of youthful recklessness thrown in – Team North America opened eyes and dropped jaws at the World Cup of Hockey. They were a throwback to the halcyon days of the 1980s Oilers, a relentless blur of oddman rushes, bold moves to the net and end-to-end action. It was a glimpse into what hockey could and, in the eyes of many, should be.

The 23-and-under hockey wunderkinds were the story of the tournament, beating Finland, narrowly losing to Russia, and knocking off mighty Sweden in overtime, the last two among the most exciting games imaginable. Everyone loved watching them play – the fans, their coaches, their opponents.

“They’re totally different,” Canada coach Mike Babcock said. “I like watching that team because there’s tons of skill.

“I like winning more, though.”

In other words, wideopen hockey is fine for made-up super teams in international competitions, but it just won’t play in the NHL. If you’re waiting for breathless hockey to Stan Bowman become the norm, well, don’t hold your breath.

“Ideally, we would all love to play that style of hockey,” said Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman, who was one of the co-managers of Team North America. “The challenge is finding guys with enough talent to do that.”

Friend texted concerns Fernandez, 24, died when the boat he owned slammed about Fernandez MIAMI – Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez was a patron at a Miami River bar and restaurant the same night he and two friends were killed in a boat crash, a spokeswoman for the establishment confirmed Tuesday.

A friend of one of the victims said he warned him against the post-midnight trip, and Marlins center fielder Marcell Ozuna said he and at least two other teammates turned down invitations to go and tried to discourage Fernandez from going out.

American Social Bar & Kitchen spokeswoman Dana Rhoden said in an email that Fernandez was there before the accident. The statement did not say whether Fernandez had been drinking or what time he left.

The bar is along the Miami River in the city’s downtown section and allows boats to dock alongside.

Ozuna, perhaps Fernandez’s closest friend on the team, said all of the players knew Fernandez planned to go out on the boat that night.

The Washington Post I’m not a huge fan of potlucks. I know they are all the rage, but I just don’t get it. When I’m invited to dinner or to a party, I like to be served food someone else has cooked. I figure it’s my night off from the kitchen.

So six years ago, when my friend Hope called proposing a bunch of neighbors and friends spend the winter holding soup swap parties, I thought “No way!” before she even had a chance to explain the concept.

She was persuasive.

“I love making a big pot of soup,” she began, “but I don’t love eating the same soup all week long. What if one person hosted a gathering and made a side dish, bread and dessert, and everyone else brought a pot of their favorite soup? We have a party, and then we all go home with a variety of leftover soups to eat the rest of the week.”

Hmm. Despite myself, I had to admit I kind of liked the idea. I cook one pot of soup, get to go to a party, and leave with a week’s worth of homemade soups.

The Second Sunday Soup Swap Suppers were born six winters ago in the small Maine town where I live. Hope chose six couples who love to cook. Every month during the long, snow-filled winter we got together, each time at a different home, and had a soup swap party. Some of us were neighbors and friends, some merely acquaintances, but over the course of six winters we became close. Soup brought us together.

Each soup swap party started with everyone introducing what they had brought.

“Hello, my name is Rebecca, and I went to the indoor winter farmers market on Saturday and found root vegetables and gorgeous organic rosemary and made my favorite childhood soup.”

“This is the matzoh ball soup my mother made every Passover.”

“My grandmother made this chestnut soup every Christmas.”

The first few times we got together, the soups were delicious but not particularly adventurous: chicken noodle, tomato bisque, lots of purées. But as the months and years passed, the soups became increasingly sophisticated.

Soon enough, we would hear: “I tasted this noodle soup on a recent trip to Vietnam, where it was served at a stall at a night street market.”

tion, and in addition to bringing home souvenirs, they returned with soup recipes and with the exotic spices and other ingredients with which to make them.

Within a year, the soups began to reflect a far more adventurous spirit: Thai red curry noodle soup; Scottish smoked haddock and leek chowder; Indian mulligatawny; corn and sweet potato chowder.

Had we all turned into master soupmakers? Or was it that as we got to know one another better, we wanted to challenge and please everyone with ever-more-interesting soups?

What the soup swap parties taught us is the simple act of making soup and sharing it with others is a great way to build a community. You don’t need to live in a small town. Soup swaps work just as well in urban neighborhoods, and with relatives, parent-teacher

organizations, yoga classes, book clubs – you name it. The key is to start with a small group of people who love food and enjoy cooking. You’ll be amazed at how relationships deepen and grow, one pot of soup at a time.

You’ll also be surprised how little dairy is used in this creamy cold soup.

The topping provides a bright, crunchy counterpoint. Be sure to use a lightcolored vegetable broth, so the soup remains pale.

Parsnip and Cauliflower ‘Vichyssoise’ With Gremolata 8 main-course servings or 12 appetizer servings; makes 10 cups; Healthy

For the gremolata: 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/2 cup plain panko (Japanese bread crumbs)

Sea salt Freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley 1 tablespoon minced fresh chives For the soup: 2 medium leeks 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 medium-to-large parsnip, peeled and coarsely chopped 1 medium head cauliflower, cored and cut into medium florets 1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme Sea salt Freshly ground black pepper 7 cups no-salt-added vegetable broth (see headnote) 1/4 cup heavy cream For the gremolata: Melt the butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Stir in the oil, then add the panko and toss until the crumbs are completely coated. Toast the crumbs, stirring constantly, for 3 to 5 minutes, until golden brown. Season lightly with salt and pepper. Let cool for at least 10 minutes, then add the lemon zest, parsley and chives, tossing to incorporate. The yield is 1/2 to 3/4 cup.

For the soup: Trim the dark green sections from the leeks and reserve for making vegetable broth, if desired. Halve the pale green and white sections lengthwise. Rinse under cold running water, pat dry and cut crosswise into 1/2-inch pieces.

Melt the butter in a large stockpot over low heat. Stir in the oil and leeks; cover and cook for 10 minutes or until the leeks are tender.

Add the parsnip, cauliflower and thyme. Season lightly with salt and pepper.

Add the broth, stirring to incorporate.

Increase the heat to medium-high and bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover and cook for 30 minutes or until the parsnip and cauliflower are tender. Remove from the heat, uncover and let cool for about 5 minutes.

Use an immersion (stick) blender, or work in batches using a food processor, to puree the mixture into a smooth soup.

Return it all to the pot over low heat. Stir in the cream. Taste, and add salt and pepper as needed.

Ladle the soup into mugs or bowls; top each portion with a small spoonful of the gremolata.

Nutrition information per serving (based on 8): 140 calories, 3 g protein, 13 g carbohydrates, 9 g fat, 4 g saturated fat, 20 mg cholesterol, 120 mg sodium, 3 g dietary fiber, 7 g sugar.

Warm the olive oil in a large stockpot over low heat. Add the leek and garlic; cook, stirring, for 5 minutes, then add half the rosemary and half the thyme, season lightly with salt and pepper, and cook for 1 minute. Add the carrots and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes. Add the lentils and the tomatoes with their juices, stirring until all the ingredients in the pot are coated. Increase the heat to high, add the Roasted Chicken Stock and bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and add the remaining rosemary and remaining thyme and the parsley. Partially cover and cook for 45 minutes.

For the meatballs: Meanwhile, line a plate with paper towels.

Combine the ground lamb, garlic, rosemary, thyme, egg, cheese, panko and a generous sprinkling of salt and pepper in a medium bowl. Use your clean hands to mix the ingredients and form them into about 30 small meatballs.

KC hosting FAFSA Completion Nights DAILY CHRONICLE The Kishwaukee College Financial Aid Office will host free workshops to assist local students with filing the 2017-2018 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on Oct. 12 and 27 and Nov. 15 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Room A1345.

Participating students and their parents should plan on spending about 30 minutes to complete the FAFSA. Participants should park in Lot A/ South Lot and enter through Doors 16 or 17.

The FAFSA form is the first step in filing for financial aid to attend a college or university. The 2017-2018 FAFSA is for financial aid for the next

academic year (typically beginning in with Fall 2017).

Cyndi Stonesifer, director of financial aid at Kishwaukee College, reminds area residents of a change in filing date for the FAFSA. For anyone planning to attend Kishwaukee College or any other college or university in the 2017-2018 academic year, the filing date opens on Oct. 1.

Stonesifer also noted that the FAFSA is the basic building block of all financial aid packaging for college students across the U.S. Filing the FAFSA is the first step in determining what federal or state financial aid a student is eligible for, including Pell Grants, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, Fed-

eral Direct Student Loans and the Illinois Monetary Award Program. Filing early may qualify a student for funding from a wider variety of financial aid sources.

The FAFSA Completion Nights allow students and their parents an opportunity to fill out the FAFSA form with assistance from financial aid professionals from Kishwaukee College and high school guidance counselors from Kishwaukee Educational Consortium.

Any student who would like assistance is welcome to attend the FAFSA Completion Nights.

Local ag program gets student teacher

The University of Illinois Agricultural Education program has placed a student teacher, Amy Loschen, with agricultural science instructors Toni Gabriel and Sarah Landers at the SoAmy Loschen monauk-Leland-Sandwich agriculture program.

From January through April, Loschen will teach classes, help advise FFA members, prepare career development teams, and attend leadership conferences.

“The student-teaching experience is the capstone for the undergraduate education program,” Gary Ochs, adviser to student teachers in the Agricultural Education Program at the University of Illinois, said in a news release. “Student teaching with high school agriculture teachers like Ms. Loschen is doing with Mrs. Gabriel and Mrs. Landers becomes an extension of the University of Illinois Agricultural Education Program.”

SHS choir, orchestra perform in Tenn.

DAILY CHRONICLE Sycamore High School Choir and Orchestra students were invited to perform at the Grand Ole Opry Show and the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville this summer.

Thirty-eight students and 12 music staff and adult chaperones traveled to Nashville for a four-day once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Choir and orchestra students attended special music clinics at Belmont University led by Elisabeth Small (orchestra) and Jeffrey Ames (choir). The group per-

formed in the Opry Plaza for crowds attending the Grand Ole Opry Show, which they attended as well, and on the front steps of the Country Music Hall of Fame.

This group also visited the Parthenon and Ryman Auditorium, and went behind the scenes of the Nashville Symphony to learn what it’s like to be a member of the award-winning orchestra as they toured Schermerhorn Center.

One morning was spent visiting Carnton Plantation and the Franklin Battlefield, the site of a major Civil War battle and field hospital.

The highlight for many on the trip was

a visit to RCA Studio B. The group was provided a glimpse into the heart of the Nashville music scene with an up-close look at how music is created and recorded, while standing where legends such as the Everly Brothers, Dolly Parton and Elvis Presley recorded some of their bestloved songs. The students also had their own recording session in Studio B. The Sycamore Music Boosters support students in grades K-12 in music programs offered within the district. Treating a disorder that may be triggering hiccups usually is the first course of action.

Say, for example, GERD or an infection is triggering your hiccups. Medication treatment for GERD or antibiotic treatment of the infection may reduce or eliminate them.

Certain medications may cause hiccups, and discontinuing them can be an effective cure. Examples include midazolam (a relative of Valium), some types of chemotherapy and the heart medication digoxin.

If your hiccups aren’t triggered by a medical condition and aren’t particularly bothersome, there is no urgency to “cure” yourself.

Hiccups almost always will go away on their own. But if you are bothered by them, the following strategies may help: • Holding your breath • Breathing into a bag • Swallowing sugar (my remedy of choice) • Biting on a lemon • Gargling ice water • Tickling your hard palate with a cotton swab • Drinking from the opposite side of a glass If you still can’t find relief, talk to your doctor. Certain medications can help reduce hiccups.

Dear Dr. K: I regularly get hiccups. Sometimes they last a long time. Is this cause for concern?

Dear Reader: As annoying as hiccups may be, they rarely signal a serious underlying problem.

Hiccups are caused by an abnormal reflex of the diaphragm and the rib muscles. The diaphragm is a layer of muscle that sits underneath your lungs and at the top of your abdomen. It plays an important role in breathing. When the diaphragm moves downward into the abdomen, it helps pull air into the lungs. When it rises upward, it helps expel air from the lungs.

There also are muscles that hold the ribs together. Take in a deep breath. See how your ribs moved outward? That was caused by the contraction of the rib muscles. The outward movement of the ribs also helps pull air into the lungs.

Hiccups involve a sudden contraction or spasm of the diaphragm and the muscles between the ribs. The spasm makes you inhale quickly and involuntarily. As air is suddenly sucked into your lungs, the space in the throat near the vocal cords snaps shut. This is what produces the typical hiccup sound.

Many situations can trigger hiccups: • Emotional stress or excitement • Stretching of the stomach (after overeating, drinking carbonated beverages or swallowing air) • Abrupt changes in temperature (as with drinking a hot beverage) • Alcohol bingeing • Smoking If your hiccups come and go, they most likely are a result of your eating habits and digestive function. Try to eat less, or more slowly. Also, limit your alcohol intake.

If your hiccups last longer than 48 hours, an underlying medical problem becomes more likely. Examples include laryngitis,
