Jupiter moon may have water plumes POLL

The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – The Hubble Space Telescope has spied what appear to be water plumes on one of Jupiter’s icy moons shooting up as high as 125 miles.

The geysers are apparently from an underground ocean that is thought to exist on Europa, considered one of the top places to search for signs of life in our solar system.

The plumes at the south pole were detected by the workhorse telescope as the moon passed in front of Jupiter.

Scientists believe the eruptions on Europa are sporadic since they were only able to spot them on three out of the 10 times that they looked over more than a year.

Even so, the possible presence of plumes, which shoot up and rain back down on the surface, would “allow us to search for signs of life in the ocean of Europa without needing to drill through miles of ice,” astronomer William Sparks of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore said Monday.

D-428 BOARD TO MEET TODAY FOR FIRST TIME SINCE MOELLER PLACED ON LEAVE

DeKALB – The DeKalb District 428 school board is scheduled to hold a special meeting Tuesday, likely to pick a new interim superintendent or whittle the pool of applicants down further.

On Friday – two days after the school board sent a notice to parents advising that Superintendent Doug Moeller was placed on paid administrative leave – the board messaged parents again letting them know that the district is interviewing temporary replacements.

“The administrative team has conducted an initial round of interviews for the interim superintendent position, with additional interviews early next week. The administrative team shall present candidates for a second round of interviews with the Board of Education. Depending on the outcome of the interviews, we hope to make an appointment of an interim superintendent in the very near future,” the message, sent to families Friday via email and voice mail, stated.

The same day, the school district published notification of today’s special meeting. It is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at the Education Center, 901 S.

The Cassini spacecraft previously spied jets shooting out from the surface of the Saturn moon Enceladus, which harbors an ocean beneath its icy shell. Unlike Europa, the geysers erupting from Enceladus are continuous.

The Juno spacecraft, currently in orbit around Jupiter, isn’t designed to study Europa and won’t be able to confirm the plumes, NASA said.

The space agency is in the early stages of drafting a mission to Europa in the 2020s that would involve putting a spacecraft in a long, looping orbit around Jupiter to make close flybys of the ice-encrusted world.

The European Space Agency is planning to fly its own spacecraft to the gas giant around the same time to study its three largest moons – Ganymede, Callisto and Europa. Jupiter has 67 moons.

DEKALB POLICE WARN OF TREE SERVICE SCAM

DeKALB – Police are warning residents about a scam involving people who claim to be tree service employees contracted by the city of DeKalb.

A resident told police that a worker identified himself as being with ABC Tree Service and asked the homeowners to come outside the home so they could show them the trees that needed trimming. He walked the homeowners into the backyard while talking in Spanish on a radio with a third, unknown person, according to a news release from the DeKalb Police Department.

When the homeowners returned to the house, they found items had been stolen from the house.

A witness saw three people enter the the front door while the homeowners were in the backyard, the release said.

The city of DeKalb doesn’t have anyone contracted to trim trees at this time.

Clinton, Trump battle fiercely over taxes, race, economy

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – In a combative opening debate, Hillary Clinton emphatically denounced Donald Trump on Monday night for keeping his personal tax returns and business dealings secret from voters and peddling a “racist lie” about President Barack Obama. Businessman Trump repeatedly cast Clinton as a “typical politician” as he sought to capitalize on Americans’ frustration with Washington.

“There’s something he’s hiding,” she declared, scoffing at his repeated contentions that he won’t release his tax returns because he is being audited.

Tax experts have said an audit is no bar to making his records public. She said one reason he has refused is that he may well have paid nothing in federal taxes.

He interrupted to say, “That makes me smart.”

Trump aggressively tried to turn the transparency questions around on Clinton, saying he would release his tax information when she produces more than 30,000 emails that were deleted from the personal internet server she used as secretary of state.

Trump’s criticism of Clinton turned personal in the debate’s closing moments. He said, “She doesn’t have the look, she doesn’t have the stamina” to be president. He’s made similar comments in previous events, sparking outrage from Clinton backers who accused him of leveling a sexist attack on the first woman nominated for president by a major U.S. political party.

Clinton leaped at the opportunity to remind voters of Trump’s numerous controversial comments about women, who will be crucial to the outcome of the November election.

“This is a man who has called women pigs, slobs and dogs,” she said.

The televised face-off was the most anticipated moment in an election campaign that has been both historic and unpredictable. Both sides expected a record-setting audience for the showdown at Hofstra University in suburban New York, reflecting the in-

The centerpiece of Trump’s case against Clinton was that the former senator and secretary of state is little more than a career politician who has squandered opportunities to address the domestic and international she’s now pledging to tackle as president.

“She’s got experience,” he said, “but it’s bad experience.”

Both candidates portrayed themselves as best-prepared to lead a nation where many are still struggling to benefit from a slow economic recovery and are increasingly fearful of terror threats at home and abroad. When Trump jabbed Clinton for taking time off the campaign trail to study for the debate, she said, “I prepared to be president, and that’s a good thing.”

The candidates sparred over trade, taxes and how to bring good-paying jobs back to the United States.

Clinton said her Republican rival was promoting a “Trumped-up” version of trickle-down economics – a philosophy focused on tax cuts for the wealthy.

She called for increasing the federal minimum wage, spending more on infrastructure projects and guaranteeing equal pay for women.

Trump panned policies that he said have led to American jobs being moved overseas, in part because of international trade agreements that Clinton has supported. He pushed her aggressively on her past support for the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact while she was serving in the Obama administration.

She has since said she opposes the deal in its sweeping final form.

“You called it the gold standard of trade deals,” Trump said. “If you did win, you would approve that.”

Disputing his version of events, Clinton said, “I know you live in your own reality.”

Trump struggled to answer repeated questions about why he only recently acknowledged that Obama was born in the United States.

For years, Trump has been the chief promoter of questions falsely suggesting the president was born outside of America.

“He has really started his political activity on this racist lie,” Clinton charged.

Trump also repeatedly insisted that he opposed the Iraq War before the 2003 U.S. invasion, despite evidence to the contrary. Trump was asked in September 2002 whether he supported a potential Iraq invasion in an interview with Howard Stern. He responded: “Yeah, I guess so.”

Presented with the comment during the debate, Trump responded: “I said very lightly, I don’t know, maybe, who knows.”

The Republican also appeared to contradict himself on how he might use nuclear weapons if he’s elected president. He first said he “would not do first strike” but then said he couldn’t “take anything off the table.”

Clinton said Trump was too easily provoked to serve as commander in chief and could be quickly drawn into a war involving nuclear weapons.

“A man who can be provoked by a tweet should not have his fingers anywhere near the nuclear codes,” she said.

Trump replied: “That line’s getting a little bit old.”

Alumni take last look inside old Waterman High School

news@daily-chronicle.com WATERMAN – The ghosts of Wolverines past followed alumni Friday night as they took what probably was their last look inside the old Waterman High School, now known as the Indian Creek Middle School.

Coming together from 12 states for their 40th anniversary reunion was the Class of 1976, with a few alums from 1975, 1977 and 1978 also invited. Some 50 graduates and spouses, plus three retired teachers, toured the old school building, destined for closure in 2017 when grades five through eight will be relocated to the remodeled Waterman Elementary School. At that time, Waterman elementary and high school students will be bused to Shabbona, where the high school has been since the two towns’ schools consolidated in 1993 to become the Indian Creek Community Unit 425. At that time, the Wolverines mascot was replaced by the name Timberwolves.

The nostalgic tour was organized by 1976 graduate Linda Loudermilk, now a paraprofessional at the middle school. The three-story brick building may be razed once it is closed; but an addition, which was built in the early 1960s, could be retained for community uses since it has a more modern gymnasium and other upgraded facilities than the original structure.

Teachers accompanying the alumni were David Miner, who spent 19 years from 1965 to 1984 as a science teacher; Joan Correa, who taught physical education; and Sherrie Martin, who taught elementary classes for more than 20 years and is also a graduate of Waterman High.

Walking into his old chemistry lab and science classroom, Miner pointed out where he had hung his white lab coat, and noticed the old wooden intercom box still on the wall. One of his former students, Susan Hunt (Class of 1977), had come all the way from the Big Island of Hawaii to reconnect and reminisce with schoolmates. She recalled the big, long laboratory tables in the room and sinks that no longer are there. Miner quipped that his students thought he wore the same lab coat for years and told him they would bronze it when he retired.

Alumni from the Waterman High School Class of 1976, plus a few from other classes, gather Friday on the lawn in front of their alma mater, holding the banner they carried in the homecoming parade the next day.

Walking through the old library on the third floor, alumnus Jeff Foose spotted a large register still in the floor and recalled that classmate Kenny Baie used to lift up the floor grate and crawl in there during study hall.

Many of the alumni spent time in the old building’s gym, now used as a practice facility and for P.E. classes.

Displayed on the wall at the gym entrance are names of past athletes and the all-time records they set while in school. Lots of photos were taken of that sign board. All around the walls in the cafeteria were trophies and awards won by past teams in several sports.

A truckload of trophies had been removed in the 1990s after consolidation and turned over to the Waterman Area Heritage Society for display or sale.

Locked inside a hallway display case are artifacts of early days in the school

with a smattering of yearbooks, record books, microphone, and even a school bell. Classmates wondered out loud what would become of that memorabilia when the school no longer is there.

Perhaps the most interesting recollection of the night came from Bob Sabin, who said he and four other male classmates decided they wanted to take home economics, which had heretofore been reserved for female students. His mother had to talk the school into allowing them into the class and – along with Eldred Russell, Jeff Foose, John Vines and David Hartman – signed up for home ec, then being taught by Alberta Collier.

They caused quite a stir among the 15 girls in class and tried some new recipes never seen before in the school. Sabin recalled they made “beer-battered smelt,” using cans of beer obtained

from a liquor establishment in Hinckley or Shabbona. He couldn’t recall by whom or which tavern, but Waterman was a “dry town” for decades, so they had to go elsewhere for alcohol. One of his female classmates then spoke up and said, “also tell about the pot-laced brownies you guys made in class …,” which was met by a grin, then silence among the fellows in the group. So that story ended right there.

As the lights were turned out and the front door locked, the classmates almost could hear the refrain from the old Wolverines fight song, sung to the tune of “On Wisconsin”:

SYCAMORE – The board of commissioners for the Sycamore Park District will vote on delaying the sale of $6 million in bonds during its meeting at 6 p.m. today in the Park Maintenance Sports Complex at 435 S. Airport Road.

Sycamore residents in 2014 voted in favor of increasing their property taxes so $9 million in bonds could be issued for projects outlined in the park district’s Vision 20/20 plan, including a community center and other new amenities.

This referendum allowed for a property tax rate increase of 18 cents per $100 of equalized assessed value, which amounted to an additional $81 a year for the average homeowner.

Board President Ted Strack said

that because of favorable interest rates, the board has a total of $10 million in bonds it can issue.

He said park commissioners have immediate plans to issue $4 million in bonds, and the ordinance up for vote today would let them take more time to issue the last $6 million.

“The board has previously passed an ordinance to allow the issuance of bonds, but we haven’t actually issued any bonds because we haven’t needed the money yet,” Strack said. “The additional tax receipts have been adequate to cover the planning costs.”

Strack said the past year has been dedicated to planning and engineering for Vision 20/20 projects, and issuing the first set of bonds should allow for construction to begin in spring of 2017, starting with new connections along the Great Western Trail.

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Aldermen reached a consensus Monday that the city’s cannabis possession ordinance needs to be revised, but how much different it looks compared with the new state law and in other college towns remains to be seen.

“What was once considered a crime, not only has now become very socially acceptable, but the realization of the cost in enforcing the prohibition are costing us a significant amount of money – even at the local level,” 1st Ward Alderman Dave Jacobson said.

The issue made for a lengthy discussion among aldermen during their Committee of the Whole meeting.

There was no action to take, but

the elected officials agreed that the city’s ordinance should be changed.

City staff presented aldermen with a list of fines in other college towns, with costs ranging from $250 to $1,000 for possession amounts ranging from less than 2.5 grams to 30 grams.

Members of the City Council said they want to see a revised ordinance that not only decriminalizes marijuana and paraphernalia possession, but also looks out for area college students.

Several of them also said they could support lowering the city’s fine.

One resident spoke to that point when comments from the public were allowed.

“We’re a college town. Let’s lower the fines – let’s set a standard,” resident of the 4th Ward Dwayne Brown said.

CHICAGO – Teachers in the nation’s third-largest school district announced Monday that they have overwhelming support for a strike, but several steps remain before a possible walkout could take place next month.

About 95 percent of the Chicago Teachers Union’s voting members favored the strike authorization after several days of high-turnout voting last week. The support was widely expected; about 88 percent supported a strike during a similar vote in December.

To strike, the union needs 75 percent support and must provide school officials 10 days’ notice. CTU’s governing board meets Wednesday to determine next steps. If board members decide to give notice, the earliest possible first day of a strike would be Oct. 11.

Union officials said the vote should come as “no surprise” to school officials or parents, citing cuts in the cashstrapped school district.

Study: Video gaming has generated about $785M in Illinois

CARBONDALE – Data from industry experts and the state of Illinois show video gaming has generated about $785 million in state and local tax revenue since the machines were legalized four years ago.

The Southern Illinoisan reported that the number of establishments in Illinois that allow the machines has grown as well – with 5,600 businesses having machines.

Victim of shooting on U of I campus was set to start nursing job

CHAMPAIGN – A suburban Chicago man shot dead as he was walking by a fight on the University of Illinois campus over the weekend was to start a career as a registered nurse on Monday.

Donation lifts fundraising caps in comptroller race

CHICAGO – A $260,000 donation to Illinois Comptroller Leslie Munger’s campaign has lifted the caps on political contributions and guarantees a big-money race between the Republican incumbent and Democratic challenger Susana Mendoza.

The loan is from Munger’s husband, attorney John Munger, according to an Illinois State Board of Elections filing late last week. State campaign finance law limits donations, but it also says that if a candidate or family member contributes more than $250,000 to his or her own race, the limits come off for all candidates.

The move comes as millions of dollars are being funneled into Illinois legislative races, and Republicans are outspending Democrats for the first time in recent history. Backed by a wealthy governor, Republicans are trying to break Democratic supermajorities in the House and Senate.

With no caps, Republicans and Democrats are sure to pour resources into the race. The role of the comptroller, who writes the state’s checks, has taken on more prominence during the state’s budget stalemate because the office gets to prioritize who gets paid and who has to wait.

CHICAGO – Plans have been delayed to ask a grand jury to consider charges against Chicago police in the Laquan McDonald case.

Special prosecutor Patricia Brown Holmes received more time Monday to prepare. A judge in the case hoped to empanel a grand jury Monday, but WLS-TV reported that Holmes needs time to collect the thousands of pages of documents in the case. She said she hopes she can present evidence to grand jurors by the end of the year.

Police: Houston gunman had 2 weapons, thousands of rounds

HOUSTON – A disgruntled lawyer wearing military-style apparel with old Nazi emblems had two weapons and more than 2,500 rounds of live ammunition when he randomly shot at drivers in a Houston neighborhood Monday before he was shot and killed by police, authorities said.

Nine people were injured during the morning shootings on the street in front of a condo complex; six were shot, and three had eye injuries from flying glass. One person was in critical condition and another in serious condition, officials said.

Houston Homicide Capt. Dwayne Ready and interim Police Chief Martha Montalvo did not identify the man and did not have information about a motive. A bomb squad robot examined a Porsche that police said belonged to the gunman; Texas motor vehicle records in a commercially available database showed the car is licensed to Nathan DeSai at an address in the condo complex.

The property manager of the condo complex also confirmed that police were going through DeSai’s residence, where Ready said vintage military items dating to the Civil War and other guns were found in the man’s apartment.

Authorities first received reports of the shootings about 6:30 a.m., and the man began firing at officers when they arrived. The man had two legally purchased guns – a .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun and a semi-automatic rifle commonly known as a Tommy gun – and an unsheathed knife, Ready said.

He also noted that there were 75 spent casings at the scene, which were from officers and the gunman.

Houston Police Department and four with two other local agencies – “engaged the suspect who was shooting randomly at passers-by as well as anybody he could put his sights on.”

During the shootout, one driver was shot and one of the officers “left cover to take that citizen to safety while the other officers engaged the subject,” he said.

Mayor Sylvester Turner told KTRK-TV in Houston that DeSai was a lawyer who was “disgruntled” and was “either fired or had a bad relationship with this law firm.” But DeSai’s former law partner, Kenneth McDaniel, disputed that assertion, saying they jointly closed their 12-year-old law firm in February because of economic conditions related to Houston’s energy industry downturn.

McDaniel also said he hadn’t had contact with DeSai lately and that police called him Monday morning to check on his safety, although they didn’t explain why.

“He went his way with his practice, and I went with mine,” McDaniel said, adding, “All I can say it’s a horrible situation. I’m sad for everyone involved.”

Calls placed to phone numbers connected to DeSai and his father were not immediately answered. DeSai’s father, Prakash DeSai, told KTRK that his son lived in the condo complex and drove a black Porsche. He also said his son, whom he saw Sunday, was upset because “his law practice is not going well” and stayed upset “because of his personal problems.”

Perrye Turner, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Houston Division, said officials don’t believe the incident is tied to terrorism.

The entrance to the condo complex, which is in southwest Houston near the affluent enclave of West University Place, was blocked off with police tape late Monday morning.

Classic Cinemas purchased the theater and all of its contents, including the movie projectors, seats and concession equipment. Mark Mazrimas, Classic Cinemas’ marketing manager, said that a week was not enough time to completely renovate the theater but some updates have been made.

“We hope to have everything done by early 2017, to bring the theater back to its former glory and better,” Mazrimas said. “We didn’t want the theater to be closed for months and for the community to miss movies.

We will have the opportunity for construction every day, and people will be able to see the changes that transpire.”

Mazrimas said the two issues people were most concerened about – the unkept bathrooms and the cinema lights that did not dim – have been fixed.

Changes that were completed by the theater’s reopening included adding new toilets, vanities and mirrors in the bathrooms, adding new digital sound processors, installing a new automation system, changing the light bulbs to softer colors, having the parking lot seal coated and restriped, fixing the lights in the parking lot, having the seats and carpeting cleaned, replacing the heating and air conditioning units, some painting and adding new video monitors for showtimes and concessions.

By early 2017, the signs on the exterior of the building will be removed and new lighting fixtures added, the movie poster cases will be rebuilt, the game arcade removed, the carpets replaced, vinyl will be added to the lobby’s walls and new pleated fabric will be added to the auditorium walls.

“We want the theater to be fami-

ly-friendly, with a welcoming decorating theme,” Johnson said. “The theater needed a lot of updating.

Everything will be finished by early 2017, and we’re not going to dawdle.

It all depends on the availability and delivery of the material.”

Cinema 7 movie tickets cost $6 before 6 p.m. and $8 for adults and $6 for children and seniors after 6 p.m.

There is an additional $2 charge for 3D movies. Tickets for non-3D movies cost $5 on Tuesdays. Cinema 7’s amenities include a party room and free refills on all sizes of popcorn, soft drinks and ICEES. For a limited time, each ticket purchase will include a free small popcorn.

Moviegoers also can enroll in the Classic Rewards Program. Members can earn points by purchasing tickets, concessions and gift cards. Points can be used for free concessions and movie tickets. Members also will receive advance movie schedules, special offers and discounts.

At 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, Cinema 7 will screen “Hotel Transylvania 2” for Halloween. Admission will be $1 per person or free for patrons wearing a costume.

Johnny Hornick, owner of Johnny K’s next to the movie theater, said the theater’s remodeling will help with both the theater and his restaurant’s business.

“I think that it’s great that it’s happening,” Hornick said. “The movie theater is something for people to do here in Sandwich. It’s important to keep businesses here in town. I’m excited now to go to the movies.”

SANDWICH – Ninety-year-old John Kell, a life-long resident of Sandwich, remembers going to Sandwich’s State Theater during the Great Depression with his neighbor to watch cowboy movies for 25 cents.

After living 90 years in Sandwich, Kell was happy to hear that the WOW 7 movie theater, 101 Duvick Ave. in Sandwich, was purchased by Classic Cinemas and will be remodeled.

“The old theater needed renovation, and I didn’t want to see the building close or lose another business in town,” Kell said. “A lot of people are already driving to Yorkville for the movies. With the new company, I hope the theater stays open for a long time.

I wish them all the luck in the world.”

WOW 7 opened on Thanksgiving Day 1998. The theater was built

by Ralph Webb, Harold Oliver and Thomas Weber, their last names and the number of theater screens forming WOW 7’s name. Webb bought out Oliver and Weber’s shares and managed the theater with his daughter Cindy.

Classic Cinemas purchased WOW 7 on Sept. 15. After closing for a week of renovations, the theater reopened as Cinema 7 on Friday with screenings of “The Magnificent Seven” and “Storks.”

Classic Cinemas is a family-owned company based in Downers Grove.

It is the largest independent theater chain in Illinois and one of the largest in the United States. With the acquisition of WOW 7, Classic Cinemas now operates 111 screens at 14 locations across northern Illinois, including Elmhurst, Freeport, Oak Park, Naperville and St. Charles.

Willis Johnson, president of Classic Cinemas, has a house in Lake Holiday and often visited WOW 7 with his wife Shirley.

The price of pain in the United States

There is big money in pain, which is why the makers of prescription painkillers seem so interested in ensuring that doctors keep prescribing opioids despite an addiction crisis that has claimed 165,000 lives in the United States since 2000.

An investigation by The Associated Press and the Center for Public Integrity showed that even as drug makers claim to be fighting the prescription drug epidemic, they are using a 50-state strategy and handing out millions of dollars in campaign donations to weaken or outright kill legislation to limit the use of drugs such as OxyContin, Vicodin and fentanyl.

The AP and the center found that between 2006 and 2015, Big Pharma spent more than $880 million nationwide on lobbying and campaign contributions. That was far more than advocates for a crackdown on prescription drugs could spend; it dwarfed what the gun lobby doled out over the same period.

The findings mirror reporting since 2011 by the Journal Sentinel’s John Fauber and MedPage Today, which found money from drug makers was a pervasive influence.

The solution is for legislators and physicians to show courage in the face of these pressures. Legislators and Congress should take appropriate action to ensure the drugs are available to those who need them but aren’t overprescribed. And physicians, knowing the risk, should be more reticent in prescribing these drugs.

There is plenty of evidence that doctors have been overprescribing.

Sales of prescription opioids rose fourfold from 1999 to 2010, the investigation found. Purdue Pharma, which makes OxyContin, had about $2.4 billion in sales from opioids last year alone, AP and the center report. And, all the while, deaths by overdose rose.

Opioids undoubtedly have a place in a sensible medical landscape, especially for cancer patients or end-of-life care. But studies show little evidence that opioids are effective for treating routine chronic pain. One study cited by the AP and the center from a hospital system in Pennsylvania found that about 40 percent of chronic noncancer pain patients who received opioids showed signs of addiction.

“You can create an awful lot of harm with seven days of opioid therapy,” David Juurlink, a toxicology expert at the University of Toronto, told reporters. “You can send people down the pathway to addiction when they never would have been sent there otherwise.”

Lawmakers and physicians need to confront this scourge.

Migration and generation of partisan changes Let’s step back, as we approach the first presidential debate of the 2016 campaign, and look back to try to understand how voting patterns have changed over a generation, by comparing the 2012 presidential results with those of 1988 – keeping in mind possible shifts since 2012 suggested by 2016 polling.

My thesis is that changes in states’ voting behavior can best be explained by surges of migration over the past generation – not just immigration, a subject of obvious interest this campaign season, but even more of internal migration within the United States.

The overall picture is one of Republican decline, from the 53 percent George H.W. Bush won in 1988 to Mitt Romney’s 47 percent in 2012. But the decline was not uniform.

In 14 states with 201 electoral votes, the Republican percentage dropped by double digits. In 20 states with 161 electoral votes, the Republican percentage increased or dropped by less than 3 percent.

In 16 states and D.C. with 176 electoral votes, it dropped by about the national average.

(Comparing Democratic percentages produces almost identical results, since minor candidates got only 1 percent or 2 percent in those two elections.)

The double-digit Republican drops in California, Illinois, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are often

VIEWS Michael Barone attributed to high Hispanic and Asian immigration. But they’re also the result of huge domestic out-migration of middle-class people due to high taxes and high-cost housing.

From the 1940s to the 1970s California tilted Republican because of vast numbers of newcomers from the Midwest. Starting in the 1980s it became strongly Democratic not only because of vast influxes from Mexico but also because many of the offspring of Midwestern migrants moved out.

More than 1 million descendants of Irish, Italian and Jewish immigrants from the three-state region around New York City and from metro Philadelphia have moved south along Interstate 95. That migration has left those metro areas, competitive in 1988, solidly Democratic.

And those internal migrants have made Virginia and Florida, and to a lesser extent the Carolinas and Georgia, more Democratic. Virginia, solidly Republican in the 1980s, voted at the national average in the Obama elections and has tilted more Democratic this year. North Carolina, competitive in the last two elections, is so again.

It also matters who moves in.

The two largest states, California

and Texas, have identical Hispanic percentages. California, while losing middle-income whites, is gaining high-education liberals, while Texas’ huge domestic in-migration is culturally and economically conservative.

As a result, California is safe Democratic and Texas safe Republican.

In 2014 gubernatorial races, Texas Hispanics voted about as Republican as California whites.

States that have had little or no domestic in-migration and low immigration mostly trended Republican from 1988 to 2012: in the Appalachian chain; southwest from West Virginia through Arkansas and Oklahoma; in most of the Great Plains and northern Rocky Mountain states; and in heavily Germano-Scandinavian Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Trends in some states may be surprising. Maryland, with heavy black in-migration from Washington, D.C., has moved from marginal to safe Democratic. Massachusetts, after 1990s tax cuts, has had low out-migration, and its Democratic trend is only about the national average.

The largest move to Democrats, 20 percent, was in Vermont, where many New Yorkers like Bernie Sanders have replaced flinty New England farmers, with similar trends in western New Hampshire and the Berkshires in Massachusetts. Mississippi, unlike the rest of the interior South, has trended Democratic rather than Republican, evidently because of higher black

turnout.

Increasing Hispanic and Asian populations in large metro areas’ suburbs, together with greater cultural liberalism among high-education whites, transformed many of them from Republican to Democratic by 2012, a trend likely to be augmented by Donald Trump’s unpopularity among these groups.

But Trump’s appeal to low-education and older whites seems to be putting him ahead in places where the elder Bush trailed badly in 1988 – in West Virginia, western Pennsylvania, Ohio and Iowa (Michael Dukakis’ second-best state then). Trump is also doing well in Nevada, which with its many Hispanic and Filipino immigrants trended 13 points Democratic in 1988-2012, because he’s running ahead among its many white non-college-graduates.

The biggest puzzle is, no surprise, Florida – a must-win for both candidates. The recent Puerto Rican influx in metro Orlando helps Democrats.

But domestic migrants from the Northeast were Trump’s strongest supporters in the primary and could swing its 29 electoral votes to the guy from Queens with a house in Palm Beach.

Hashing out issues of race, speech and football protests Six members of Rock Island High School’s football team have seized their First Amendment rights and taken a knee. And, as does any good protest, it divided the community and this editorial board.

Athletes throughout the country have started using the pregame national anthem ritual as a moment to highlight racial inequality, a movement instigated by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Some have sat. Others kneel. The more optimistic have joined arms or raised their fists.

Through the simple act of kneeling, a handful of black Rock Island teenagers not only expressed their disaffection but did so through sport, a time-honored tradition. Muhammad Ali wasn’t just a boxer. Jackie Robinson wasn’t just a baseball play-

er. For decades, athletics have played an instrumental role in foisting contentious social issues onto a public that would just as soon ignore them.

The protests, one could argue, are that which have made sport relevant beyond a pastime.

But, as with this editorial board, the reactions ran the spectrum from frustration to full-throated support.

The protests saddened one member of the editorial board, who considered it an unnecessary sacrifice of celebrating the best of the U.S. in order to highlight its ills.

Another was ready to kneel alongside with the players in solidarity.

Black Lives Matter critics demanded peaceful, nondestructive protests, he argued. Well, they got it here.

And it all comes as unrest grips Charlotte and Tulsa after two more

police shootings of black men.

Seeking common ground, we debated. We sniped. Tempers flared.

Statistics about police shootings were cited. So, too, were opinions about respect for law enforcement and for those who risked their lives for this country.

When it was all said and done, we agreed that, above all else, free speech is the very foundation of any free society. There are no legal protections from being offended. In reality, the most successful protests do offend because they hit home the hardest. ... Right or wrong, these high school students are speaking to a belief that people are targeted by society solely because of the color of their skin. Theirs is a complaint that’s reverberated through black

America for decades. Both major political parties have recognized the failings of disproportionate policing and are rolling back draconian, targeted drug laws.

Locally, police agencies and politicians are improving outreach. But more must be done.

There’s a reason that black Americans are taking to streets in protest. There’s a reason lawmakers are dismantling the War On Drugs.

There’s a reason that police agencies are reinventing their approach to their craft.

There’s a reason six black teenagers from Rock Island felt the need to defy the most hallowed patriotic convention in order to be heard.

They have our attention. Now let’s hash it out.

SYCAMORE – Sycamore played in two relatively close sets against Dixon, but still came away with the straight-set victory, 2521, 25-19, Monday night.

Sycamore (7-7-2) was in the driver’s seat throughout almost all of the match against Dixon (11-5), and trailed only once all night.

Dixon crawled back to tie the score at 17 in the first set and gained an 18-17 lead before losing that lead and eventually losing the set.

The Spartans went on an 8-1 run to close out the set.

“We were in a funk the last few weeks after we dropped matches against Yorkville, Kaneland and DeKalb,” Sycamore coach Jennifer Charles said. “To come back home and take this match meant a lot to these girls, and I’m very proud of them.

“Right now, we still need to work on closing out matches when we are in that position, and we

continue to work on the little things in practice.

We played well in this past weekend’s tournament against some good teams, so it looks like things are starting to come together for this team.”

In the second set, Sycamore led wire to wire.

Their largest lead of the night came on their game-winning point.

“I think we came out and played a little timid,” Dixon coach Bunyan Cocar said. “Sycamore’s setter was very good and very active, and we haven’t seen a player like her this year.

That made us question ourselves and question our defense a little, and we didn’t adjust early enough.

“We have interchangeable players, so we moved them around a little, but we just didn’t get the energy we needed tonight. Give Sycamore credit, they don’t make a lot of mistakes and they’re a very well-coached team, and they deserved to win.”

Niemann helps Iowa in tough road win

sports@daily-chronicle.com In a bounce-back game for the Iowa football team, Ben Niemann had seven tackles as the Hawkeyes beat Rutgers, 14-7, Saturday in Piscataway, New Jersey. The Hawkeyes (3-1) earned a tough road win a week after a shocking home loss to FCS powerhouse North Dakota State.

The starting outside linebacker from Sycamore has 30 tackles, an interception and a pass breakup this season.

• • • Another FCS team pulled out a win against an FBS team when Western Illinois beat Northern Illinois on Saturday in DeKalb. Leathernecks’ sophomore Tyler Slamans prepped just down the road from Huskie Stadium at Kaneland. The tight end didn’t have a catch in the 28-23 upset, but has played in all three games for WIU (3-0)

The freshman setter/defensive specialist also had 18 assists, six digs and an ace. She’s played in 21 sets and has started one match for the Cardinals.

• • • Erika Hansel had two kills and a dig in Tulane’s 3-0 win against Abilene Christian on Sept. 17. The freshman middle hitter from Genoa-Kingston has 23 kills, four assists and eight digs on the season for the Green Wave.

• • • Emily Chapman is the starting goalkeeper for the Augsburg women’s soccer team. The freshman from Kaneland has allowed one goal in more than 306 minutes for a .29 goals-against average. She has eight

saves and an .889 save percentage. The Elburn native has faced 14 shots.

• • • DeKalb grad Kayla Baum saw the first action of her collegiate career in a 2-0 win against Shorter University on Sept. 14. The North Alabama freshman defender fired off a shot in her 11 minutes on the pitch.

• • • With starts in six of the 10 Wisconsin-Whitewater matches, Morgan Beaty has a goal on six shots. The junior forward from DeKalb had the match-winner Sept. 18 against DePauw.

• • • On the tennis court, Southern Illinois freshman Mary Ellen Green lost her first collegiate match Saturday at the Saluki Fall Classic. The DeKalb grad lost, 6-2, 6-2, to Nicole Jones of Western Illinois.

Nolan shot an 18-hole score of 98.

The Royals posted a score of 479, well ahead of second-place Somonauk’s score of 514. Hinckley-Big Rock sophomore Allison Ryan shot a team-best 110, and the Royals improved to 14-3.

BOYS GOLF Cogs drop close match to Dixon: Ge-

noa-Kingston’s Nick Gargani shot a 41 to earn medalist honors in a 182-188 loss to Dixon at Marengo Ridge.

Jacob Uszcienski added a 48, and Bailey Foley had a 49 for the Cogs.

Timberwolves win conference meet: Indian Creek narrowly edged Newark to win the LTC meet in Morris.

The Timberwolves won with a team score of 371, just ahead of Newark. Hinckley-Big Rock shot a 404 to take fourth place.

Eamonn Gentry posted a personal-best 94 to lead the Royals.

BOYS SOCCER Cogs shut out Richmond-Burton: Carson

Riggs scored a pair of goals in the second half to help G-K in a 3-0 victory over Richmond-Burton in Genoa.

Nick Uecker scored the first goal with two minutes left in the first half for the Cogs, who improved to 9-5 overall. Jesus Lara assisted on all three goals.

H-BR wins offensive shootout: Alex Perales scored three goals, and the Royals won a 6-3 shootout over Hiawatha in Kirkland.

Perales scored two goals in the first half and scored one of the Royals’ four second-half goals. Grant Kuppler, Vinny Rose and Dakota Gum all added goals for the Royals, who improved to 5-9 overall and 3-3 in the LTC. Gum also had two assists, and Rose had the assist on Kuppler’s goal.

IC edges Serena: Trevor Guerra scored midway through the first half, and the Timberwolves won, 1-0, at home against Serena.

Austin Sommerfeld assisted on the goal.

Barbs fall to Boylan: DeKalb allowed a pair of late goals and lost, 3-0, to Boylan Catholic in DeKalb.

The Barbs trailed 1-0 in the second half before Boylan scored two goals in the final minutes.

GIRLS TENNIS Kaneland wins close match: The Knights

PITTSBURGH – Javier Baez hit a grand slam and drove in a career-high six runs while major league ERA leader Kyle Hendricks pitched six scoreless innings as the Cubs won for the 100th time this season, routing the Pittsburgh Pirates, 12-2, Monday night.

White Sox 7, Rays 1: At Chicago, James Shields pitched six effective innings for his first win in two months, Justin Morneau and Carlos Sanchez each hit tworun homers and the Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays.

Shields (6-18) allowed one run and seven hits, using six strikeouts to help wriggle out of several jams and help the Sox win their third straight.

The right-hander hadn’t won since July 26, when he pitched scoreless ball into the eighth against the crosstown Cubs.

Shields was 0-6 in his previous 10 starts and is 4-11 since a trade to the Sox from San Diego.

Morneau and Omar Narvaez each had two hits. Jose Abreu had two hits and an RBI.

Hoiberg already feeling the pressure

The general manager was in good spirits during Monday’s media day, looking comfortable with his standing in the franchise.

John Paxson? Same story for the Bulls’ VP of basketball operations.

Intense as usual, but no sign of stress caused by job security.

Sure, the two men can talk about accountability, but accountability only reaches so high in the Bulls organization, making Gar/Pax all but immune.

Second-year coach Fred Hoiberg?

He doesn’t share that luxury.

Ending an eight-year playoff run as the Bulls did last season comes with consequences. Considering Hoiberg was a rookie coach last year and only one season into a five-year deal, the blame game shifted to the roster.

There’s a reason Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah are in New York, and Pau Gasol is a Spur.

However, the Bulls are running out of places to point the finger. No wonder Hoiberg admittedly is feeling the heat.

“Sure, yeah,” Hoiberg said, when asked if he was feeling pressure. “I put a lot of pressure on myself. This is a high-pressure job, and I understand that. And again, nobody looked at this thing harder in the offseason than I did, and was harder on themselves than I was. I know that I have a job to do, to try and put these guys into position to go out and win basketball games, and that’s my sole focus, to go out and do that.

“But yeah, the pressures in this job are very high. And again, after games, win or lose, you go back and watch the film and try [to] make the necessary adjustments.’’

Atop that adjustment priority list for Hoiberg is making sure the communication between coach and player is alive and well.

There were some struggles in that department last season, whether it was Hoiberg and Noah disagreeing on the big man’s benching or Jimmy Butler publicly neutering Hoiberg by insisting that he needed to coach harder.

Neither was a good look.

This summer, Hoiberg has had frequent talks with Butler, as well sitting down with new veteran additions Rajon Rondo and Dwyane Wade.

“I told Fred, ‘As much as you can, use me as an example. I want you to

Hoiberg admits he’s feeling the pressure to win in his second season as coach. really get on my tail about every little thing,’ “ Butler said Monday. “Because if Doug (McDermott) or Tony (Snell) or whoever it may be is watching coach talk to me like that, it’s going to be like, ‘If he can talk to Jimmy like that, I know he’s going to come at me a certain way.’ That’s what I try to remind him every day. I think he’s ready for that. I’m a player. I’m coachable like everybody else. I want that. I need that.”

And if this is going to work, Hoiberg needs to supply that.

Sure, the defense needs to be better, the team needs to play harder and with more toughness, but Hoiberg needs the respect of the locker room first and foremost.

“The big thing about making this work is having communication,” Hoiberg said. “I’ve had really good conversations with Rajon, with Dwyane.

We’ve watched a lot of film together and shared ideas. Does that add extra pressure? No. I feel a lot of pressure, and any coach that sits in this chair on media day is feeling the same way. So you go out there and you try putting your guys in the right positions, and I’m confident we’ll do that.”

The Bears haven’t groomed a young quarterback because … because … because who knows why? You shake your head so often at their myopia that a chiropractic adjustment is in order.

Nothing could be as bad as the cratered, mushroom-cloud losses to the Patriots (51-23) and the Packers (55-14) in 2014. I wouldn’t begin to argue that what is happening now is worse. But I will say that the first three games of 2016 have moved the needle on the angst meter from “dispirited” to “we’re doomed.”

It’s hard to see much improvement in Fox’s second season, but, worse, it’s hard to see even the chalk outline of a plan in Pace’s second year as GM. Fox has those two Super Bowl appearances on his résumé, and they have carried him a long way. But the currents have brought him to here and now, and his résumé might as well be a paper towel for all anyone in Chicago cares. The only thing that matters is 0-3 and how the Bears plan to proceed. But because everything is a secret at Halas Hall, no one is sure of the plan or if there is one.

It looks like a rebuild, but since when do rebuilds involve a franchise-wide fog, zero visibility and a sleepy coaching staff? At news conferences, Fox always looks like he wants you to know that he knows what’s going on, even though he won’t tell you what’s going on, and, by the way, can he get back to towel snapping with his frat brothers now?

The Bears were 6-10 last season, and all we heard about in the offseason was Fox’s ability to flip houses.

Well, that and how accommodating the schedule would be this season.

But here they are, a mess heading into Week 4 against the Lions. On Monday, Fox wouldn’t even commit to a healthy Cutler starting over Hoyer, even after a bad loss to the Cowboys.

What’s the plan, long-term or otherwise? The Bears aren’t showing or telling. Or maybe even knowing.

“Nobody comes and rescues you,” Fox said. That’s what he and Pace are supposed to be doing with the Bears.

The Bears weren’t supposed to be done struggling, but they were supposed to be done looking lost and without a plan.

The whole idea of jettisoning Lovie Smith, Jerry Angelo, Marc Trestman and Phil Emery over the past several years was to put the franchise on firmer footing. That’s why the hiring of John Fox last year seemed so good and so right.

Here was a coach who had been to two Super Bowls with two different teams, a man who had turned around the fortunes of two franchises. That calm demeanor, that raspy coach’s voice, that steady hand – all of it seemed to add up to someone who could take the chaos of what had come before and turn it into order, if not improvement.

And here was a fresh-faced general manager, Ryan Pace, who would introduce modern sensibilities to Halas Hall.

The Bears are 0-3 after a lifeless performance against the Cowboys on Sunday night, and even the possibility of stinking their way to the No. 1 pick in next year’s draft doesn’t invite much hope. They probably would take the best available injured athlete.

Let’s dismiss injuries, the Bears’ fallback excuse so far this season.

Injuries are a built-in part of the NFL, the way colds are at a day-care center.

If you’re going to preach the “nextman-up” gospel, as Fox does, then don’t talk about injuries. Talk about how poor the team’s depth is.

Injuries don’t explain how ill-prepared the Bears were Sunday and how poorly coached they looked. From their first offensive play of the game, when backup quarterback Brian Hoyer couldn’t execute a handoff to running back Jeremy Langford, the Bears seemed out of step. Dowell Loggains’ offensive game plans have lacked clarity, and Sunday was no different. The next rookie quarterback to be confused

by Vic Fangio’s defensive schemes will be the first. And for all the talk of a veteran coaching staff’s influence, I don’t see many players improving.

The Bears wouldn’t have beaten the Cowboys with a healthy Jay Cutler, so let’s forget that nonsense. He is only the most glaring symptom of what’s wrong with the franchise. The Bears have made poor personnel decisions going back to what feels like the Ice Age. They compounded their original bad idea of trading for Cutler by giving him more money. His contract set the team back, although revisionists have tried to explain it as an average deal for an

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Well, this isn’t the way anyone wanted to see Tony Stewart end his career. The driver went into NASCAR’s playoffs with a roar and is on the verge of exiting with a whimper.

Stewart is in the bottom four of the Chase standIN THE ings and will be eliminated SunPITS day at Dover Jenna International Fryer Speedway if he doesn’t pull off some sort of miracle before the field is trimmed from 16 to 12 drivers. He’s retiring at the end of this season, and all his fans wanted to see a solid run toward a fourth NASCAR title.

Instead, he opened the playoffs with a 16th-place finish in Joliet and he was 23rd Sunday at New Hampshire. Chris Buescher is the only driver below him in the standings, and Stewart might just need to win at Dover to advance to the second round.

Kevin Harvick, who won at New Hampshire to earn an automatic berth into the second round, isn’t counting out his teammate. With Harvick secure and Kurt Busch 11th in the standings,

been mediocre through the first two races.

Dillon was 14th in the opener, 16th at New Hampshire and doesn’t have a top-10 finish in six weeks. His New Hampshire race was a struggle, but Dillon said he thought his Richard Childress Racing team persevered and has hope for Dover.

“I never gave in, never gave up, our team never gave up,” he said. “We go to Dover and we’ve given ourselves a shot.

We’ve just got to go run good there.”

Everyone besides Harvick and Truex Jr.:

A win gets a driver an automatic berth to the second round, and Harvick and Martin Truex Jr. each have punched those tickets.

But the standings are so close throughout the rest of the field that a mechanical problem, a crash or simply ailed strategy could end the Chase for any driver. Only six points separate fifth-place Joey Logano from 11th-place Kurt Busch and no one is feeling all that safe. Chase Elliott is ninth in points and finished third in Joliet, but he’s hardly breathing easy.

When asked what he expects from Dover, he was blunt: “I feel like it’s an upcoming race and we need to do a better job.”

This hardly is the position anyone thought Stewart would be in a month ago, when his fiery side began to emerge as the Chase approached. He wrecked Brian Scott at Darlington, wrecked Ryan Newman at Richmond and seemed to be in no mood to play around over the final 10 races of his NASCAR career.

But he’s not performing on the track, not at the level to race for a championship, at least, and that’s got to change Sunday or he will close his career watching the playoffs go on without him.

Stewart has not finished higher than 16th in the past six races, and his average finish is 26.3 over that span.

He has three career wins at Dover, the most recent during his 2013 march to the title. But his average finish of 14.1 won’t get it done.

Who else could be eliminated on Sunday? A list: Chris Buescher: If you filled out a Chase bracket, you almost certainly had Buescher eliminated in the first round.

He barely made the Chase, needing to cling to 30th in the standings to be eligible, and his Front Row Motorsports team just isn’t equipped to compete with the big dogs. Buescher was 28th in Joliet, 30th at New Hampshire and is last in the 16-driver Chase field.

If it rains Sunday, and he uses strategy to stay out and inherit the lead before the race is canceled, then he’s got a shot at avoiding elimination. That is, after all, how he won Pocono to get into the Chase.

Jamie McMurray: He is 13th in the standings, and that’s a bit of a surprise because the Chip Ganassi Racing cars had been strong headed into the Chase. McMurray was eliminated in the first round last year, and believed his team had learned enough to make it through this opening three-race stretch. But there’s no room at all for error in the Chase, and a 19th-place finish at New Hampshire simply isn’t good enough.

Ganassi teammate Kyle Larson, who many thought would go deep into the playoffs, isn’t secure, either. He’s 12th in the standings – only five points ahead of the elimination spot.

Austin Dillon: He is tied with McMurray in the standings and trails Larson by five points for the transfer spot. Not because he’s been bad in the Chase, but because he’s

By improving your concentration and your sleep, treatment for anxiety or depression can improve your mental function.

• Underactive thyroid gland. When your thyroid gland isn’t producing enough thyroid hormones, many body functions become sluggish, including brain function. This can lead to blurred thinking and forgetfulness. Treatment with a thyroid pill can fix the problem.

• Obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea causes people to stop breathing periodically while they sleep. As a result, they don’t get enough deep sleep at night. The classic symptom is daytime sleepiness. But it also can cause fuzzy thinking. (Sleep apnea also puts you at risk for stroke and heart disease.) There are treatments that can greatly improve symptoms.

You might need some tests to identify an underlying condition. Blood tests can check your thyroid hormones or B12 levels. A sleep test can determine if you have sleep apnea.

If not, your doctor may refer you to a neuropsychologist. This specialist can put you through a series of formal tests of your thinking ability, particularly signs of dementia.

Most of the time, however, people with fuzzy thinking do not have dementia. They have a less serious condition, one that usually can be successfully treated.

Dear Dr. K: Lately my mind and memory have not been as sharp as usual. Could something other than aging or dementia be to blame?

Dear Reader: I’m glad you asked, because memory or thinking problems often lead people to worry they are developing dementia. Most causes of dementia don’t yet have cures. However, there are several underlying conditions that often affect memory and thinking – conditions that can be cured. And they are often overlooked.

I spoke to my colleague Dr. Shreya Raj. She is a neuropsychiatrist with the Center for Brain/Mind Medicine at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. We discussed several common and treatable underlying conditions that can impair thinking skills: • Medication side effects. Several common medications can affect thinking. Overthe-counter examples include oxybutynin (Ditropan) for incontinence and diphenhydramine (Benadryl) for allergies. Prescription medications such as amitriptyline (Elavil) for depression and cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril) for muscle spasms can affect cognitive function. Any medication that has a sedative effect, such as pain or sleep medications, also may make it hard to concentrate and think clearly.

• Low B12. Vitamin B12 is essential for healthy blood and nerve function. But as we age, it gets harder to absorb the B12 we get from food. This can cause abnormally low B12 levels in the blood, which can lead to fuzzy thinking and other symptoms. Fortunately, this problem is easily fixed by taking vitamin B12 pills or, sometimes, B12 injections.

• Anxiety or depression. Both anxiety and depression can cause fuzzy thinking. These conditions interfere with your ability to attend to what’s going on around

DEAR ABBY I’ve been with my boyfriend, Jeanne “Jake,” for two Phillips years. We are both 32. Since the beginning, his sister, “Michelle” (who is 26), has never liked me. Jake admits there’s no reason for it. He thinks she’s just looking out for him because he’s had bad relationships in the past.

Michelle makes me very uncomfortable during family events by making rude comments, and she makes a point of excluding me from any event she is hosting. She has told people I “shoved her” and accuses me of refusing to let her talk to her brother. Neither is true.

I have asked Jake to ask his sister to apologize and make amends, but he insists she’ll do it when “hell freezes over.” He thinks I should try to make amends even though I have never done anything wrong. Amazingly, this is my 8,000th column. To show that you never stop learning at this game, I had another new bridge experience on Aug. 15, when I had a really enjoyable evening playing bridge at the Portland Club in London, as the guest of Stephen Richards.

At the Portland, no conventions are allowed, not even Stayman or Blackwood. You may use takeout doubles, but bidding a new suit requires four cards in it, and there are no cue-bids or control-bids. A one-notrump opening shows 12-14 points, and two-bids are strong. If a one-level contract is passed out undoubled, it is conceded, the cards are stacked, and they are dealt in groups of five and three -- a goulash. I sat East on this goulash.

The bidding sounded more and more weird to me because I had forgotten that partscores carried over.

(I last played bridge where that was the case perhaps 40 years ago.) On this deal, North-South had 60 on, so two spades was game. Hence South’s strange-looking pass at that point.

But he made up for it later when my partner pushed all the way to the five-level.

If I had been West, I think I would have led the heart ace, hoping partner had a singleton, but here it did not matter. We could take only my partner’s aces, so they made a vulnerable game for 650 points.
