Arnold Palmer dies at age 87

Arnold Palmer brought a country club sport to the masses with a hard-charging style, charisma and a commoner’s touch. At ease with both presidents and the golfing public, and on a first-name basis with both, “The King” died Sunday in Pittsburgh.

He was 87.

Alastair Johnson, CEO of Arnold Palmer Enterprises, confirmed that Palmer died Sunday afternoon of complications from heart problems. Johnson said Palmer was admitted to the hospital Thursday for some cardiovascular work and weakened over the past few days.

Palmer ranked among the most important figures in golf history, and it went well beyond his seven major championships and 62 PGA Tour wins. His good looks, devilish grin and go-for-broke manner made the elite sport appealing to one and all. And it helped that he arrived about the same time as TV moved into most households, a perfect fit that sent golf to unprecedented popularity.

“If it wasn’t for Arnold, golf wouldn’t be as popular as it is now,” Tiger Woods said in 2004 when Palmer played in his last Masters.

“He’s the one who basically brought it to the forefront on TV. If it wasn’t for him and his excitement, his flair, the way he played, golf probably would not have had that type of excitement.

“And that’s why he’s the king.”

Beyond his golf, Palmer was a pioneer in sports marketing, paving the way for scores of other athletes to reap in millions from endorsements.

Some four decades after his last PGA Tour win, he ranked among the highest-earners in golf.

“Thanks Arnold for your friendship, counsel and a lot of laughs,” Woods tweeted Sunday night. “Your philanthropy and humility are part of your legend. It’s hard to imagine golf without you or anyone more important to the game than the King.”

He would hitch up his pants, drop a cigarette and attack the flags. With powerful hands wrapped around the golf club, Palmer would slash at the ball with all of his might, then twist that muscular neck and squint to see where it went.

“When he hits the ball, the earth shakes,” Gene Littler once said.

Palmer rallied from seven shots behind to win a U.S. Open. He blew a seven-shot lead on the back nine to lose a U.S. Open.

He was never dull.

“I’m pleased that I was able to do what I did from a golfing standpoint,” Palmer said in 2008, two years after he played in his last official tournament. “I would like to think that I left them more than just that.”

He left behind a gallery known as “Arnie’s Army,” which began at Augusta National with a small group of soldiers from nearby Fort Gordon, and grew to include a legion of fans from every corner of the globe.

Palmer stopped playing the Masters in 2004 and hit the ceremonial tee shot every year until 2016, when age began to take a toll and he struggled with his balance.

Volunteers team up to wade through and clean up the Kishwaukee River

Shaw Media correspondent Ryan Hannan has been swimming and fishing in the Kishwaukee River since the early 1990s when he was a boy – so he didn’t mind getting his feet wet Saturday to clear three canoes-worth of trash from the river.

More than 50 other volunteers joined him in the river and along the bank to clean a mile-long stretch between Lions Park and Prairie Park annual Clean the Kish Day. The annual event runs in association with National Public Lands Day, and was created three years ago by the DeKalb Park District and Northern Illinois University’s Outdoor Adventures program to clear the small-scale pollution in the Kishwaukee River, DeKalb Park District commissioner Dag Grada said.

“The river is central to our community, and it tends to get used as a dumping area,” Grada said. “It’s an asset to our community or could be more of an asset.”

A bicycle, a child-sized plastic chair that was returned to its worried owner, a shotgun shell, a tire, wooden pallets and several plastic bags and metal scraps were among the debris found in the Kish.

Some objects, including a 6-foot-tall dumpster and wooden pallet embedded in tree roots, could not be moved.

“You name it, it’s in there,” said Hannan, who works at the ecological consulting firm ENCAP Inc. “Even when I’m out wading around in the rural parts, I’ll come across old tractor equipment, and I’m like, ‘How did it get there?’ ” Cleanups such as the one Saturday help the river ecosystem to an extent, but larger issues – such as nonpoint source runoff pollution from many sources, sometimes carried by rain or snowfall, nutrient pollution and channelization – are out of the park district’s control, Grada said.

“We do some conservation-related efforts like this, but primarily the park district is recreational, just like the forest preserve district is primarily [conservational],” Grada said.

Nearly 28 plants and 30 animal species are considered endangered, threatened or watch-listed in the 63.4-mile-long Kishwaukee River basin, according to the Forest Preserves of Winnebago County website.

MUTTS STRUT THEIR STUFF Local canine owners bring pets to 5K run to raise money for animal shelter

Shaw Media correspondent It was the canine social event of the season, as dogs and their humans mingled at Hopkins Park on Saturday morning for the 11th annual TAILS Humane Society s Mutt Strut, a 5K walk/ run to raises money for the DeKalb animal shelter.

More than 350 people and 200 dogs participated in the event, which raised more than $17,000. All proceeds will be used to care for more than 2,200 animals that TAILS takes in each year.

Michelle Groeper, TAILS’ executive director, said the amount raised Saturday exceeded her expectations, and that she couldn’t be more pleased with the turnout.

“This is a great community event.

It’s one of the few 5Ks in the Chicagoland area that welcomes dogs, and it’s our biggest one yet,” she said. “This not only raises awareness for TAILS, but gives people a good reason to get out on a Saturday morning and get some exercise with their dogs while meeting their neighbors.”

Maxine Rossler of Sandwich has participated in the Mutt Strut for four years, and said she loves to do dog-friendly races with her 2 year-old German Shepherd, Maverick.

“This is something we like to do together. He likes to run,” she said. “I do a lot of races, but I definitely do any race that has dogs involved. It’s awesome he can do this.”

Rossler’s friend, Emily Kielb, grew up in DeKalb and previously has volunteered at TAILS, but this was the North Aurora resident’s first Mutt Strut. She wanted to bring her dog, Pandora, to socialize with other animals.

“She’s doing well so far. She likes meeting new dogs, and this is great exposure to other dogs,” Kielb said.

This also was the first Mutt Strut for Erin and Lance Vobornik of Sycamore and their dog, Saul. The couple adopted the 2-year-old lab mix from TAILS. “It’s a little overwhelming for Saul,

but he’s enjoying it,” Erin said. “We are here to support TAILS because they have a strong commitment to helping animals and making sure the adopters are supported. They really care about the animals and their families.”

Cindy Lochmann and her Boxer, Maiya, were dressed up for the race.

This is the fourth time they’ve participated the Mutt Strut because Lochmann said she thinks it’s important to support TAILS. “It’s important to help dogs and kitties find homes, and raise money for them,” the Maple Park resident said.

“Maiya loves this. This is great for her because she’s in training to be a therapy dog. And we have a lot of fun. The weather is cool this year, too.”

Karen Schnell of St. Charles adopted her dog, Zevran, a Staffordshire Jack Russell mix, from TAILS in January.

This is the first time she has attended the Mutt Strut with her dog.

“TAILS was really great. They took excellent care of him before I adopted him,” she said. “He was in rough shape when I got him, and now he’s an amazing dog. TAILS does a great job of rehabilitating and finding good homes for the animals.”

Sally Salifoski came from Streamwood for the race because she adopted her dog, Jax, as well as two cats, from TAILS. “My cat got really sick shortly after I adopted her, and they took her back and nursed her back to health,” Salifoski said. “We’ve done other fundraisers for TAILS because it’s a great animal shelter.”

This year’s mascot was Kadin, an 8-year-old Shiba Inu. His owner, Christina Taylor of Byron, said that her dog

earned the title because she and him were the top fundraisers for last year’s event.

“We’re going to mostly walk today. He’s pretty laid-back,” she said.

“I went to NIU and I adopted two cats from TAILS. This even tbrings a lot of awareness to animal shelters and homeless pets.”

Not everyone who raced brought their dog. Kelli Sinclair of DeKalb adopted her dog from TAILS five years ago, but she didn’t want to bring Daisy to the event.

“Daisy is a little hyper, and I’m not the greatest runner,” Sinclair said.

“This is a good opportunity for me to get some exercise and support TAILS. Animal welfare is really important, and it can lose attention with all the other funding priorities in this state.

It’s great to come and see all the dogs.”

Sycamore students paint the town for homecoming

Shaw Media correspondent It’s Homecoming week for Sycamore High School, and the community can get into the Spartan spirit by visiting downtown Sycamore and checking out the windows of various businesses.

Students from 38 clubs at the school helped paint the town Sunday morning to celebrate the annual tradition.

This year’s theme is “The Great Gatsby,” and each window features a design related to the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The windows also featured each club’s nominees for Homecoming Queen and King.

This is the first year that all the clubs are painting in downtown Sycamore. In previous years, some of the clubs would only paint windows of the high school.

Drayton Eggleson, choir teacher and student council advisor at Sycamore High School, said the window art helps involve the community with Homecoming week.

“Now all the clubs are downtown and more visible,” he said. “This is a fun way for the students to showcase their clubs to the community, and the community can see the eclectic and unique style of the students and the clubs.”

Freshman Ashley Parks was painting a window of Sweet Earth. The 14-year-old said that painting is fun because it brings all the high school students together.

“Everyone passes by and sees the windows,” she said. “It’s cool to see a little bit of the work by all of the clubs.

It’s also nice to decorate the town you live in.”

Sycamore senior tennis athlete Kiyas Kousoulas, 17, on Sunday paints images and depictions from “The Great Gatsby” on windows of downtown Sycamore businesses.

Sycamore High School orchestra, said the group’s design featured daisies because of the character Daisy in “The Great Gatsby.”

“I’ve done this every year I’ve been in high school, and it’s so much fun,” the 16-year-old junior said. “It’s a chance for us to come together for Homecoming, and painting bonds the students together. And we get to represent orchestra.”

Kiyas Kousoulas, a 17-year-old senior, said that she loves art and enjoys painting the windows because she and her tennis teammates are able to have fun together.

“Homecoming is a time for us to get

together outside of school,” she said.

“We want to show the town how we can all come together and do this. It gives the community something to look at and allows them to be involved with Homecoming.”

Members of the choir painted the window of Performing Arts Academy.

Senior Trevor McDonald, who was the choir’s Homecoming King nominee, said that Sycamore is a great community. Trevor also said that he loves involving the town the high school’s events.

“It gives the seniors a chance to shine and showcase what they can do artistically with the windows. It’s a

group effort, but the seniors lead it,” he said.

Student Council member Keegan Reynolds, 16, said he enjoys painting the town because it shows everyone’s support for the various clubs.

“Homecoming is a fun part of high school,” he said. “It’s a nice break from our school work and it brings all the students together. The football game is my favorite part of Homecoming because it’s a little more exciting than the other games, and more students and community members attend.”

Art Club member Sarah Klumpp, 16, said that painting is a good way to show school spirit and gives the students an opportunity to express themselves artistically. The Art Club painted the window at Shawns.

“I’m a really artsy person, and our design is showing the wealth, glamour and extravagance of ‘The Great Gatsby,’ ” she said. “I remember before I was in high school, I would like to come downtown and see all the windows. I knew I’d eventually be doing this.”

Not everyone who was painting was a student at Sycamore High School.

Lucy Prais-Lewis, a 15-year-old sophomore at DeKalb High School, is a member of the swim team that combines students from both schools.

“We’re all a big family. It’s two schools, but one team,” she said. “I’ve never seen Sycamore as a rival because they’re my friends. It’s nice to support Sycamore’s Homecoming because the swim team doesn’t get much exposure to the community.”

Sycamore High School’s Homecoming parade is scheduled at 6 p.m.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elmer Troutman, 79, of rural Janet, in 2005; four sisters, Mildred, Ruth, Sycamore, died Tuesday, Edith and Myrtle; and seven brothers, Hub, Sept. 20, 2016, at Serenity Clarence, Lloyd, Bob, Dick, Don and Dave.

Elmer was a member of DeKalb Farm He was born on March 30, Bureau and the Cattleman’s Association, 1937, in DeKalb to Edward and volunteered with other organizations and Nora (Sams) Troutman. and charities. Elmer loved football. He was Elmer married Janet Warner on Nov. 23, inducted into the Pete Johnson Sycamore 1963, in Sycamore. He attended Sycamore High School Hall of Fame and was a captain schools and graduated from Sycamore High School in 1956. Elmer and his family farmed in of the undefeated Sycamore football team of the Sycamore area all his life. He retired from 1955. DeKalb City Council to review marijuana penalties Changes may come after state decriminalized possession of small amounts of marijuana

The issue is scheduled to be one of two points of discussion for aldermen during the City Council committee of the whole meeting scheduled for 5 p.m. Monday. The committee of the whole meeting will be followed by the regular City Council meeting at 6 p.m.

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – One person was injured Friday when a stove top fire caused $75,000 worth of damage to a residence on Northern Court.

DeKalb firefighters were called to 1120 Northern Court shortly before 5 p.m. Friday for a report of a grease fire in the kitchen. When firefighters arrived, smoke could be seen coming from the garage and windows of the residence. They also saw fire coming out of a garden-level window in the back of the residence.

Firefighters had the fire under con-

trol within 23 minutes, according to a news release from DeKalb Fire Department Fire Investigator Adam Miller.

Fire and smoke damage extended into the rooms adjacent to the kitchen, requiring extensive salvage and overhaul, according to the news release.

The damage was estimated at $75,000.

Firefighters remained at the residence for several hours to make sure the fire was out. DeKalb paramedics treated one person for injuries at the scene, who was then taken to Kishwaukee Hospital, according to the release.

The American Red Cross assisted the residents with temporary housing and needed amenities, the release said.

Talking to others who have cancer also is therapeutic. Find a support group and join it. Go ahead and ask your doctor about support groups in the area or contact the American Cancer Society and get involved.

Police: 5 shot, 1 dead, after fight at U of I

CHAMPAIGN – One man was killed and four other people were wounded in a pair of shootings early Sunday, including one that happened on the University of Illinois campus.

Police believe the two shootings in the eastern Illinois city of Champaign might be related. They said the first apparently stemmed from an argument shortly after midnight at an apartment party on Green Street, the commercial heart of the campus.

“Our preliminary investigation completely points to an argument taking place at the party and the argument spilled out into the street, and that’s when a fight occurred,” Champaign police spokeswoman LaEisha Meaderds said, adding that the reasons for the fight aren’t clear yet.

Shots were fired as the fight escalated, striking four people, she said.

One of those shot, 22-year-old George Korchev, was killed, Meaderds said.

She said Korchev, who was from Mun-

delein, wasn’t involved in the fight and wasn’t a University of Illinois student.

He just happened to be walking by when the shots were fired. The other three were taken to a hospital for treatment of what police called non-critical gunshot wounds.

Less than half an hour later, police received a report of another shooting a few blocks west of campus. Officers found a victim, who was taken to a hospital and treated for a non-critical wound.

Police were searching for a suspect or suspects in the shootings and for the driver of a vehicle that struck someone who was running away from the gunfire at the first scene. That person’s injuries were minor.

It isn’t clear how many people were at the party because many ran when the gunfire began, Meaderds said. Police are hoping to find and speak to as many as possible.

Champaign Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen said in a statement Sunday that city and university police were working together to aggressively pursue all leads.

9 historic preservation projects to be honored

CHICAGO – Nine historic preservation projects in Illinois will be honored next month at an awards celebration in Chicago.

The projects are being honored by Landmarks Illinois, which is a nonprofit group. The award celebration is Oct. 22.

Among the projects being recognized by the preservation group are the Strand Apartments in Chicago, the Stone Avenue Train Station in LaGrange, the Jail Hill Inn in Galena and an American history project at Gibault High School in the southwest Illinois community of Waterloo.

OAK HARBOR, Wash. – The 20-year-old man suspected of killing five people with a rifle at a Macy’s makeup counter had a string of run-ins with the law in recent years, including charges he assaulted his stepfather, and was described by a neighbor as so “creepy, rude and obnoxious” that she kept a Taser by her front door.

As investigators tried to piece together information on Arcan Cetin, who was arrested Saturday evening after a nearly 24-hour manhunt, a picture emerged of a troubled young man. Court records show more than a half-dozen criminal cases in Island County alone since 2013.

Authorities said the gunman in the attack at the Cascade Mall Arcan Cetin in Burlington opened fire in the department store’s cosmetics department Friday night, killing a man and four females ranging from a teenager to a senior citizen. The killer then fled.

Cetin said nothing and appeared “zombie-like” when he was taken into custody on a sidewalk outside his apartment complex some 30 miles away in Oak Harbor by a sheriff’s officer who recognized him as the suspect in the rampage, authorities said.

Cetin immigrated to the U.S. from Turkey and is a legal permanent resident, officials said.

As the surrounding area absorbed news of the arrest, critical questions remained, including the gunman’s motive. The FBI said early Saturday that there was no indication the

shooting was terrorism, but local authorities said later in the day that they were ruling nothing out.

On Sept. 17, a 20-year-old man stabbed 10 people at a Minnesota mall before being shot to death by an off-duty police officer. Authorities said they are investigating the attack by Dahir Ahmed Adan as a possible act of terrorism.

On Sunday, investigators searched Cetin’s vehicle and the apartment complex and were seen carrying boxes from a rear, upstairs unit.

The four-unit building was surrounded with yellow police tape. Detectives would not say what they found.

Amber Cathey, 21, lived in an apartment next to Cetin for the past three months and said she was so frightened by him that she complained to apartment management and kept a stun gun handy. Cathey said she blocked him on Snapchat after he sent her a photo of his crotch.

“He was really creepy, rude and obnoxious,” Cathey said. She said she would try to avoid him by walking the long way around to her apartment if she saw his car in the parking lot.

The two were in high school together as well, and Cathey said he acted the same way then.

The Seattle Times reported that court records show Cetin faced three charges of assaulting his stepfather. The newspaper said Cetin also was arrested on drunken driving charges. It gave no details on when the arrests took place or how the cases may have been resolved. In the assault case, Cetin was told by a judge last December that he was not to possess a gun, the newspaper reported. However, the stepfather urged the judge not to impose a no-contact order, saying his stepson was “going through a hard time.”

Legislation would force feds to safeguard information

To the Editor: Increasing reports of Americans suffering from identify theft demonstrate the vulnerability of our personal information.

I recently had a conversation with a family from Will County who recounted to me the horrific story of how it took months to recover their life savings stolen by an identify thief.

In 2014, a colleague of mine in the U.S. House, Rep. Jim Renacci of Ohio, and his wife also were victims of identity theft.

Americans are compelled to surrender personal information to the government for a variety of reasons, including applying for a job and filling out tax forms. Unfortunately, the government does not always prioritize the safety of your valuable, private information.

One such case is home mortgage disclosure. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) requires that certain personal information such as credit scores be disclosed online when applying for a home mortgage.

The CFPB says the information is anonymous, but skilled thieves can connect the dots between potential homeowners and their information, putting their finances at risk.

In order to improve the financial security of Americans, I introduced the Homeowner Information Privacy Protection Act (H.R. 4993) to eliminate the gap in private data security for Americans who apply for mortgages. It halts any federal agency or entity from publishing this personally identifiable information until all potential privacy concerns are addressed.

The government then must make the case for publishing such data.

Previously, I have supported two Housepassed bills, the Health Exchange Security and Transparency Act and the Safe and Secure Federal Websites Act, which improve the way the federal government handles and discloses the private information of citizens in the areas of health insurance and tax filings.

Americans deserve to have private, personal information secured when they entrust it to the government. These legislative solutions are steps to ensure they are protected.

That’s all within the bounds of rational thinking. None of us should give in to the dictates of our lizard brains, which continue to pass on judgments from our primal pasts.

That’s why I’m so troubled by the news that the Fraternal Order of Police has given its endorsement to Donald Trump. If police officers want the broad support of the nation – the trust of a diverse citizenry – why in the world would the FOP support Trump?

That’s not one or two or 10 police officers. That’s the nation’s largest police union giving its backing to a man who has lowered the bar for presidential campaigns by insulting Muslims, denigrating Mexicans and questioning the ethics of a federal judge because of his heritage.

Trump doesn’t merely pander to racial prejudices, engaging in the dog-whistles that have been standard for Republican candidates since the

1960s. He has issued full-throated cries of bigotry, starting with his enthusiastic indulgence in “birtherism,” a lie that insists President Barack Obama was not born in the United States.

While Trump renounced birtherism grudgingly in mid-September, he seemed to indicate barely a week later that he only did that so reporters would stop asking him about it.

The claim that Obama is foreign-born has been one of the more patently racist smears by his detractors, an attempt to delegitimize the presidency of the first black man to win the Oval Office.

Certainly, the union has every right to endorse whomever it chooses, and its members have every right to vote accordingly. Police officers tend to be conservative, and the FOP usually endorses the Republican presidential nominee. But that nominee isn’t usually a person who cozies up to Nazi sympathizers. The decision of the overwhelmingly white FOP to endorse him strongly suggests that it agrees with his views. (Some black FOP members have criticized the endorsement.)

Similarly, the National Border Patrol Council, the union representing 16,500 border patrol agents, cast doubt on its members’ ability to be

prudent and fair with its endorsement of Trump in April. It’s hard to imagine union members could protect the rights of immigrants, legal and illegal, when their endorsement suggests a deep well of xenophobia.

The timing of the FOP’s endorsement could hardly be less fortunate. In communities across the country, relationships between police departments and black citizens are frayed by the deaths of unarmed black men at the hands of law enforcement officers. Police conduct is the subject of not only protests such as those led by the activists of Black Lives Matter, but also dramatic gestures by athletes such as NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

That charged atmosphere cries out for police leaders who project not only authority but also empathy, who appreciate diversity and communicate genuine respect for all citizens.

The FOP has done the opposite. Its endorsement plays into the view – widespread in some precincts – that white police officers are waging war on neighborhoods of color.

The collective nightmare about voter fraud in America How does a lie come to be widely taken as the truth?

The answer is disturbingly simple: Repeat it over and over again. When faced with facts that contradict the lie, repeat it louder.

This, in a nutshell, is the story of claims of voting fraud in America – and particularly of voter impersonation fraud, the only kind that voter ID laws can possibly prevent.

Last week, a Washington Post-ABC News poll found that nearly half of registered American voters believe that voter fraud occurs “somewhat” or “very” often. That astonishing number includes two-thirds of people who say they’re voting for Donald Trump and a little more than one-quarter of Hillary Clinton supporters. Another 26 percent of American voters said that fraud “rarely” occurs, but even that characterization is off the mark.

Just 1 percent of respondents gave the answer that comes closest to reflecting reality: “Never.”

As study after study has shown, there is virtually no voter fraud anywhere in the country. The most

comprehensive investigation to date found that out of one billion votes cast in all American elections between 2000 and 2014, there were 31 possible cases of impersonation fraud. Other violations – such as absentee ballot fraud, multiple voting and registration fraud – are also exceedingly rare. So why do so many people continue to believe this falsehood?

Credit for this mass deception goes to Republican lawmakers, who have for years pushed a fake story about voter fraud, and thus the necessity of voter ID laws, in an effort to reduce voting among specific groups of Democratic-leaning voters. Those groups – mainly minorities, the poor and students – are less likely to have the required forms of identification.

Behind closed doors, some Republicans freely admit that stoking false fears of electoral fraud is part of their political strategy. In a recently disclosed email from 2011, a Republican lobbyist in Wisconsin wrote to colleagues about a very close election for a seat on the State Supreme Court.

“Do we need to start messaging ‘wide-

spread reports of election fraud’ so we are positively set up for the recount regardless of the final number?” he wrote. “I obviously think we should.”

Sometimes they acknowledge it publicly. In 2012, a former Florida Republican Party chairman, Jim Greer, told The Palm Beach Post that voter ID laws and cutbacks in early voting are “done for one reason and one reason only” – to suppress Democratic turnout. Consultants, Mr. Greer said, “never came in to see me and tell me we had a fraud issue. It’s all a marketing ploy.”

The ploy works. During the 2012 election, voter ID laws in Kansas and Tennessee reduced turnout by about 2 percent, or about 122,000 votes, according to a 2014 analysis by the Government Accountability Office.

Turnout fell the most among young people, African-Americans and newly registered voters.

Another study analyzing elections from 2006 through 2014 found that voting by eligible minority citizens decreased significantly in states with voter ID laws and “that the racial

turnout gap doubles or triples in states” with those laws.

There are plenty of shortcomings in the American voting system, but most are a result of outdated machines, insufficient resources or human error – not intentional fraud. All of these are made only worse by shutting down polling places or eliminating early voting hours, measures frequently supported by Republican legislators.

Those efforts are especially galling in a nation where, on a good day, only 60 percent of eligible voters show up to the polls. The truth is that those who created the specter of voter fraud don’t care about the integrity of the voting system; they want to undermine the rights of legitimate voters because that helps them win elections.

The scary thing is how many Americans have bought into this charade.

It shouldn’t be surprising that the Republican Party’s standard-bearer, Donald Trump, has elevated the lie about voting fraud and “rigged elections” to a centerpiece of his campaign.

The video footage of the shooting death of Terence Crutcher at the hands of a Tulsa police officer is extremely disturbing and evokes visceral reactions: fear, outrage, panic. In view of the camera, Crutcher is seen walking slowly to his car, his empty hands raised over his head. Without any apparent provocation, he’s gunned down.

I have to exercise mental discipline – making a conscious effort to replace emotion with reason – to remember a simple truth: Not every police officer treats all black men as violent thugs, and not every law enforcement official harbors hidden racial biases that provoke disturbing overreactions.

I know that it’s wrong to assume that all police officers behave like jackbooted storm troopers, just as it’s wrong to believe all black men are criminals-in-waiting.

It’s also wrong to believe that all Black Lives Matter protesters behave like the Charlotte mob, who, angry about the shooting death of another black man at the hands of police, have turned peaceful demonstrations into days and nights of carnage.

The Sycamore History Museum will present Yvonne Johnson, Joyce Mathey and Bob Shipman in the last of a series of evening programs complementing the museum’s current exhibit, “Faces of Sycamore.”

“In the exhibit we talk about people that have shaped our community. During the Oct. 5 program, the audience will be able to learn more about three people that have done amazing work in Sycamore,” Michelle Yvonne Donahoe, museum executive director, said Johnson in a news release.

“Yvonne was an influential teacher and is a supporter of numerous community projects. Joyce Mathey, as the executive director of Pay-It-Forward House, is actively involved with this hospitality house that provides support and a place to stay for those who are visiting patients at Kindred Hospital. And Bob Shipman, from Opportunity House, is a longtime leader at this nonprofit agency that helps people with developmental disabilities work, live and socialize in the community,” she said in the release.

“This will definitely be an evening where people are inspired by the dedication and commitment of these community leaders.”

DeKALB – It’s been two years since quarterback Anthony Maddie has seen time under center for Northern Illinois.

While Huskies coach Rod Carey said the senior was the spark for the offense in the comeback that fell short Saturday in a 28-23 loss to instate FCS foe Western Illinois, Carey didn’t say he was the clear-cut favorite to take over the position.

“We’ll get into the film room and decide more, but I saw a guy who was igniting our team,” Carey said.

“I think we all saw that. He operated faster. He processed faster.”

Maddie, who entered his final season with the Huskies (0-4) as the third-string quarterback and even moved over to wide receiver earlier this year, went 11 for 17 for a career-high 142 yards and a touchdown and ran for 35 yards – most of which came when the Huskies scored 16 unanswered points in the second half. He had one drive in the first half, going 1 for 3 with a 3-yard completion.

“He made plays,” Carey said of Maddie’s performance in the second half. “He took some chances that were needed at the time, and we made plays for him. I was really happy with him coming with little reps during the week. He gave us a shot in that game.”

Redshirt sophomore Ryan Graham played most of the first half, going 14 for 21 with 109 yards and a touchdown and an interception.

It was clear that Maddie, who missed all of 2015 after back surgery, sparked the Huskies’ offense when he came in with the Leathernecks (3-0) leading, 28-7, with 2:48 left in the third quarter. He led a drive that went 72 yards on 10 plays and got the Huskies a field goal by Christian Hagan. The Huskies had the ball on the WIU 10-yard line on that drive, and running back Jordan Huff (nine carries, 130 yards) took it nine yards to the 1, but the play was called back because of a holding penalty on Lincoln Howard.

On the next drive, Maddie hit wide receiver Kenny Golladay (five catches, 113 yards) for a 38yard gain, and Huff followed with a 23-yard touchdown run to cap the 2-play, 61-yard drive.

The Huskies cut it to 28-23 with a 6-play, 60-yard drive in which Maddie had two carries for 14 yards and then hit Golladay on a 39-yard touchdown pass down the right sideline.

With a renewed sense that a comeback was possible, Maddie led the Huskies down the field two more times in the final five minutes – one that went 66 yards and another that went 52 – but both fell short.

Facing a fourth-and-2 from the WIU 20, Maddie’s keeper was stuffed just short with 2:50 left.

“If we would have gotten that first down, you definitely would have seen us slow down and milk the clock at that point and try to punch one in, but we didn’t,” said Carey, who noted after the game that both fourth-down plays were his calls.

When they got the ball back, Maddie marched them down the field, but his pass to tight end Shane Wimann on a fourth-and-3 from the WIU 9 was batted down by the Leathernecks.

starting quarterback Drew Hare in 2014 before Hare eventually won the job but suffered an ankle and knee injury at South Florida this season that required surgery this week. Whoever becomes the starter at quarterback – Maddie, Graham, or both – will take over an offense that has slumped this season, especially on third downs.

Coming into the game, the Huskies were 14 for 50 (28 percent) on third-down conversions. Against the Leathernecks, they finished 3 for 14 – converting on a pair of plays on third-and-1 and a third-and-7, the latter of which Maddie got a first down with an 11-yard run.

After Maddie took over late in the third, they went 2 for 5 on third downs.

“When we started moving the football, I don’t think we had many third downs,” Carey said of the Huskies, who went 1 for 9 on thirdand-5 or longer. “I think it’s definitely first and second down that is leading to third and long a lot. It’s not good. Certainly early, we had a bunch of those.”

DeKALB – Traditional Mid-American Conference doormat Eastern Michigan beat Wyoming on Friday night – a Cowboy team that looked very impressive in a season-opening win against Northern Illinois.

That left one thought rattling in my head even before the Huskies took the field Saturday against Football Championship Series team Western Illinois.

This is going to get worse before it gets better.

Sure enough, the Northern Illinois football team hit rock bottom Saturday, VIEWS losing to the Leathernecks, 28-23, to Eddie drop to 0-4 this year Carifio as MAC play is set to begin.

So we’ve got a team that had a 35-1 stretch at Huskie Stadium entering late last season that is now riding a three-game home losing streak, including one to an FCS team. We have a team that has won six straight MAC West titles on a seven-game losing streak.

There just hasn’t been enough in the first four weeks of the season to think this is a team that can compete for a seventh division title.

I thought I had seen enough to believe Northern Illinois could turn things around.

Players could break out of slumps. Improvements could be made. Most importantly, the Huskie schedule was tough. South Florida is an offensive powerhouse. San Diego State is one of the two best Group of Five teams, if not the best. And Wyoming is vastly improved.

But then the Eagles beat the Cowboys on Friday night, and the doubt crept into my head. Eastern beat Wyoming? Granted, it wasn’t in the high, high altitude of Laramie, Wyoming, but still. Maybe Eastern Michigan is improved. But this was a program that had to deal with rumors of being shut down this summer.

It’s not that I believe, or even want to believe, this a terrible Huskie team incapable of winning. I have spent four weeks on HuskieWire’s HuskieTalk podcast (available on iTunes) saying how I believe the team will turn it around. But, at some point, you have to start looking at the product on the field. Near-comeback at the end of the game aside, there are not enough flashes with this team.

It starts with the penalties – 10 of them for 93 yards. And they weren’t inconsequential, either. The biggest came when the Huskies

Vinny Rose had a goal and an assist, while Dakota Gum and Tate Sanderson added goals as the Royals improved to 4-9. on first-and-goal from the 10 turned it into a first-and-goal from the 20. It later became fourth-and-goal from the 10, and the Huskies decided to go for the field goal. So a three-possession game remained a three-possession game.

At the time, I thought for sure the team had given up. I was wrong, and the Huskies kept fighting and made it a one-possession game. But it still doesn’t make it a good choice to go for the field goal. The game plays out the same way if they go for it on fourth and fail – which, let’s be honest, is a strong possibility. So the final ends up 28-21 instead of 28-23.

That’s a lot of variables, granted, but kicking a field goal down 21 is a very “safe” call.

Maybe this column will look ridiculous when we’re watching the Huskies play in a seventh straight MAC title game in December. And maybe that last sentence will look ridiculous when they are playing out the string. There’s a still lot of time left.

Carey said he’s a believer in one-week seasons. There’s a lot of one-week seasons left to play, and a lot still can change.

A week ago, I was convinced a turnaround was around the corner.

Now, if a turnaround doesn’t come, I will find it way less surprising.

took over with 4:59 left. Actually, just before – instead of getting the ball at the 40 after the punt, a penalty pushed the ball back to the 25. The penalty came on a punt that wasn’t even fielded by the Huskies.

Then a holding call backed them up some more. The drive stalled out at the Western Illinois 20.

“It’s consistency, and that’s my job,” coach Rod Carey said of the Huskies’ woes as a whole. “That’s what I have to get better at, and I’m going to get better at it. I believe in these kids, and we’re together.

There’s no questioning that. They’re hurting, just like I am, but we have 24 hours of hurt, and you’re right back at it.”

It’s also the play-calling – really one in particular. To be honest, I liked the final fourth-down call that the team didn’t convert. The Huskies faked a jet sweep, then quarterback Anthony Maddie tried a little jump pass over the middle to Shane Wimann. It was on a fourth-and-3 from the 9. My only quibble was I would have gone to Wimann in the flat, out of traffic, for an easier first down and worry about the touchdown later. But that’s nit picking. It was a solid call.

sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – A high offensive output, including three goals by forward Drew Tronc, led to a 5-2 Sycamore boys soccer victory Saturday over Freeport.

The Spartans came out strong in the first half and took an early 1-0 lead on a Matt Coulibaly goal only 2½ minutes in. Sycamore was able to keep consistent offensive pressure on the Pretzels, and Tronc scored his first goal of the match with 6:44 remaining in the first half to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead at halftime.

“One of the things we did well today was keep possession of the ball,” Spartan head coach Dave Bachta said. “In the last three or four games, whether they were wins or losses, we had trouble holding the ball, especially against Sterling. And our seniors were really able to play the ball, get positive touches and get it up to the forwards.”

The Spartans continued scoring in the second half. Tronc added another goal at the 30:34 mark, and David Schmitt scored on a penalty kick that was awarded after a Pretzel player was called for a hand ball in the goal box.

of the match at the 21:48 mark, and Freeport did not get on the board until a few seconds later when Joe Quiroz scored at 21:21. Freeport added another goal by Trey Miele with four minutes remaining to make the final score 5-2.

“We knew with the large field that we were going to work hard and go after them with some of our speed,” Freeport head coach Nick Namio said.

“But I thought Sycamore beat us with their effort. We tried two different formations today, and the first one wasn’t good, and neither was the second. So I think our game plan was just not good today.”

With the win, the Spartans improve to 11-7 (3-1 in conference), and Tronc hopes that the offensive side will keep the momentum going.

“We had some good runs and crosses that helped create offensive opportunities,” Tronc said. “We definitely need to improve our fitness; but as the season goes on, we should get better at that. I hadn’t been scoring as many goals as I’d like to in recent games, but scoring these three today really helped and should give us a little push.”

Sycamore will host Geneseo on Tuesday at Sycamore High School.

STERLING – The DeKalb boys golf team shot a 316 at the Sterling Invite on Saturday, finishing in fourth two strokes behind Kaneland.

Providence Catholic led the way with a 294, with the hosts second with a 309. Sycamore was sixth with a 327.

Kaneland’s Will Marshall and Brett Glennon each shot a 72, which put them in a four-way tie for third.

Colton Guy was sixth for the Barbs with a 73, while Jack Paeglow, Emma Carpenter and Ben Vance each shot an 81.

Sycamore’s Keegan White was eighth with a 75, while Trent Scott was tied for 13th with a 78.

Gargani medals at home meet: Nick Gargani took fourth for the Cogs at Marengo Ridge.

The Cogs were ninth as a team.

Rookie Prescott solid as Cowboys score on all 4 first possessions

ARLINGTON, Texas – Maybe the Cowboys will be OK without quarterback Tony Romo this time. The future of the Dallas running game with Ezekiel Elliott looks pretty good, too.

Dak Prescott led scoring drives on all four Dallas possessions in the first half before throwing his first career touchdown pass in fellow rookie Elliott’s first 100-yard game, and the Cowboys beat the Bears, 31-17, on Sunday night to snap an eight-game home losing streak.

With his second straight win, Prescott doubled the number of victories the Cowboys (2-1) had in 14 games without the injured Romo over three seasons before the fourth-round pick showed up.

Prescott’s first TD pass was a 17-yarder to Dez Bryant for a 31-10 lead in the fourth quarter, and he’s up to 99 throws without an interception to start his career. Philadelphia rookie Carson Wentz has 102, and those are the two highest career-opening totals in NFL history.

“Dak’s handled every opportunity he’s had right from the start really, really well,” coach Jason Garrett said. “No different tonight.”

Brian Hoyer had trouble moving the Bears’ offense early with Jay Cutler sidelined by a sprained right thumb as the Bears fell behind 24-3 at halftime and dropped to 0-3 for the second time in two seasons under coach John Fox. Making his 27th career start for his fourth different team, Hoyer was 30 of 49 for 317 yards – a good portion of that with the game out of each late in the fourth quarter – and threw for two scores to Zach Miller.

“We haven’t played a complete game,” Fox said. “This week was the reverse of what we’ve had. We played very poorly in the first half.”

Elliott finishing with 140 yards on 30 carries and a 14-yard run when he hurdled safety Chris Prosinski. The Cowboys kept giving him the ball while trying to work the clock with a two-touchdown lead in the fourth quarter a week after he was benched because of two fumbles in a win over Washington.

“Made a lot of good runs tonight, a lot tough runs, a lot of NFL runs,” Garrett said. “He’s physically tough. He’s mentally tough.”

Coming off their 31-17 embarrassment at the hands of the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night, there are two very different questions to consider and answer about the 2016 Chicago Bears.

Who are these Bears? And who are they trying to be?

It is easy to see who they are, the worst team in the NFL or at best one of the bottom three.

There were only four winless teams left in the NFL after Sunday night, and the 0-2 Saints still had a Monday night game to play.

Even if the Saints lose at home to Atlanta, they were competitive in Weeks 1 and 2 and are better than the Bears right now.

Are Jacksonville and Cleveland better than the Bears?

The Jaguars’ Week 1 loss to the Packers was a much better performance than any the Bears have had this season, and they clearly have more young talent ready to be good than the Bears do.

So the only good news in Chicago right now – other than the Cubs, of course – is you’d rather have the Bears than the Browns.

Yes, the Bears are clearly more talented than Cleveland, but has a bar ever been set lower?

The more difficult and, quite frankly, disturbing question is who or what are they trying to be?.

With starters Eddie Goldman, Danny Trevathan, Pernell McPhee, Kyle Fuller and Bryce Callahan all in street clothes, only fans and fools were picking the Bears to beat Dallas, unless they were looking for a shootout between the two offenses.

As feeble as the Bears were on defense Sunday, it’s pretty hard to be too difficult on them for that performance.

But what exactly was the offense’s excuse?

Yes, starting quarterback Jay Cutler was out as well, and contrary to what the Cutler haters might say, he is clearly the choice over Brian Hoyer.

But most insiders and analysts I’ve talked to this season will tell you Hoyer is one of the best, if not the best, backup quarterback in the NFL. He had a bad exhibition season. But the fact is Hoyer knows how to win games like the Cowboys game, especially against a defense almost as undermanned as the Bears were.

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush Rolando McClain, DeMarcus Lawrence and Randy Gregory are suspended rather than injured, but they were unavailable no matter how you slice it, and all things being equal the Cowboys’ defense isn’t anywhere near as talented as the Bears’.

However, from where I was sitting, it appeared coach John Fox and offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains never gave them a chance.

Fox spent the entire offseason promising these Bears would be a run-first team that would pound you on the ground with multiple backs.

With an offensive line that has struggled in pass protection but has All-Pro talent in Kyle Long and Josh Sitton and a promising rookie in Cody Whitehair, the Bears should be able to run the ball if they commit to it.

In fact, when they signed freeagent right tackle Bobby Massie, the Bears acknowledged he’d need work in pass protection but that he was already a mauling run blocker.

To not run first, commit to it and stay with it in Dallas was pretty much inexcusable.

Fox almost certainly will argue the Bears fell behind and couldn’t stay on the ground, but that will be an excuse and an untruth.

On four first-half possessions when the game clearly was still in play, Loggains called five running plays and 13 passes.

They will look at the 49 passes vs. 15 runs, point to the score and say, “Hey, it was just the way the game went.”

But the truth is, at least right now, the Bears are a team that doesn’t have a plan on offense, doesn’t seem to know who they want to be, and it’s fair to start to question whether Loggains was the right choice to run that side of the ball.

Carlos Rodon wouldn’t let them touch it.

Rodon struck out a career-high 11 over eight dominant innings and the White Sox denied Cleveland a chance to win the AL Central title with a 3-0 win Sunday.

Blending a devastating fastball with a variety of off-speed pitches, Rodon (8-10) blanked the Indians on just two singles and easily handled the division leaders, who still haven’t wrapped up a playoff spot and have gone flat at the worst time possible.

“That’s the best I’ve seen him,” Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “It seemed like he got better as the game went along. He seemed to turn it up in key situations. He had it all. There’s a lot on the line for these guys playing on the other side. That’s a lineup that’s been able to rough us up and he responded.”

Rodon spoiled a big day for the Indians. Cleveland needed to win its regular-season finale at home and for Detroit to lose to Kansas City for the Indians to clinch their first division championship since 2007. The Royals took care of the Tigers, 12-9, but the Indians fell flat and now must go to Detroit to try to wrap up the Central. The clubs open a four-game series Monday at Comerica Park.

That hardly mattered to the Sox, who enjoyed their weekend as spoilers.

“They’re eventually going to win it, but we won’t be around to see them celebrate,” third baseman Todd Frazier said. “You’ve got to take pride in every game and every series, so they’ll have to do it on the road now.”

The Sox’s Carlos Sanchez had two RBIs off Josh Tomlin (12-9), who matched Rodon for 62⁄ 3 innings. But the left-hander turned in his best outing this season in Cleveland’s biggest game. He struck out the side in the eighth before David Robertson fanned three in the ninth for his 36th save.

CHICAGO – David Ross homered and teamed with Jon Lester for another scoreless performance, and the Cubs hurt St. Louis’ wild-card chances with 3-1 victory over the Cardinals on Sunday night.

Ben Zobrist had three hits and scored two runs as the Cubs finished with a major league-best 57-24 home record. It’s the most home wins for the Cubs since they went 58-19 at the West Side Grounds in 1910.

The Cardinals lost for the third time in four games, wasting a chance to improve their playoff positioning.

They remain a half-game back of San Francisco for the second NL wild card after the Giants lost, 4-3, at San Diego earlier in the day.

Ross, Lester’s regular catcher, plans to retire after the season and was greeted with a long standing ovation when he came to the plate in the second inning. St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina walked halfway to the mound,

forcing the unassuming Ross to take in the moment, and he took off his batting helmet to acknowledge the cheering crowd of 40,859.

Ross then struck out against Carlos Martinez, but he got another chance in the fifth and drove the right-hander’s second pitch over the wall in left for 1-0 lead. Ross clapped his hands as he rounded first on his 10th homer and the cheers continued after he reached the dugout, prompting a curtain call.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon pulled Ross with two out in the top of the seventh, giving the crowd another opportunity to cheer the journeyman catcher.

Lester (19-4), one of the top candidates for the NL Cy Young Award, struck out seven in 62⁄3 innings. The left-hander allowed three hits and walked one while improving to 10-0 with 1.34 ERA in his last 13 starts.

The Cardinals pulled within one on Jhonny Peralta’s two-out RBI single in the eighth, but Brandon Moss flied to center with runners on the corners.

Marlins ace Jose Fernandez dies in boating accident

MIAMI – Jose Fernandez escaped from Cuba by boat on his fourth try as a teenager, and when his mother fell into the Yucatan Channel during the journey, he jumped in and pulled her out.

Fernandez’s heroic backstory made his death early Sunday that much more heart-wrenching. The charismatic Miami Marlins ace was killed in a boating accident at age 24.

Fernandez and two other people died when their 32-foot vessel slammed into a jetty off Miami Beach, authorities said.

Authorities didn’t know the time of the crash. The capsized boat was found shortly after 3 a.m.

“All I can do is scream in disbelief,” said Hall of Famer Tony Perez, a Marlins executive and native of Cuba. “Jose won the love of all. I feel as if I had lost a son.”

Major League Baseball released a statement saying it was “stunned and devastated.”

“He was one of our game’s great young stars who made a dramatic impact on and off the field since his debut in 2013,” Commissioner Rob Manfred said.

The Braves, along with several other teams, quickly offered condolences.

Sky slows Dream in 2nd half to advance to WNBA semis

ROSEMONT – Courtney Vandersloot scored 21 points with 13 assists, Jessica Breland had 20 points and 16 rebounds, and the Chicago Sky beat the Atlanta Dream, 108-98, Sunday to advance to the semifinals of the WNBA playoffs.

The Sky broke it open in the first five minutes of the third quarter. Tamera Young made fast-break layups on consecutive possessions during the Sky’s 10-2 run to start the quarter for a 66-52 lead. Atlanta was outscored, 31-20, in the quarter.

The Sky cruised in the fourth – setting a season-high for total points – and will face Los Angeles in a best-of-five series.

Reigning MVP Elena Delle Donne missed her sixth straight game with a thumb injury for the Sky, but it didn’t seem to faze the team on the offensive end. The Sky had 26 assists, made 55 percent of its shots, and Young and Cappie Pondexter each scored 16 points.

Glasses correct most astigmatisms Dear Dr. K: At my last visit, my eye doctor told me I have astigmatism. He told me what that means, but I still don’t really understand what it is. Please explain it to me.

Dear Reader: Astigmatism means the eye’s cornea has an irregular shape, which causes vision problems. Astigmatism is very common; I am among the several billion people who have it. Fortunately, it’s easy to correct.

Let’s start with a little eye anatomy. The cornea is the clear, dome-like window at the front of the eye. Rays of light pass through the cornea and then through the lens, which focuses images onto the retina. The retina captures the images and sends them to the brain via the optic nerve.

The cornea normally is round. In people with astigmatism, the cornea may be shaped like a football or oval. This causes light to scatter instead of focus on a single point as it passes through the cornea.

Blurred vision is the most common symptom of astigmatism. Some people describe it as double vision but in only one eye. You may develop eyestrain, squinting and headaches from working to focus on near or distant objects.

Many people have some degree of astigmatism; in fact, it is rare to find a perfectly formed eye. Although people are born with astigmatism, it often is Not noticed until a child attends school or learns to read. Astigmatism tends to remain stable, but it slowly may worsen over time. An eye doctor can diagnose astigmatism using a standard eye examination.

Glasses are a good, reliable choice for correcting astigmatism. Patients who prefer contact lenses may be limited to hard contact lenses. Soft lenses some-

Another option is corrective surgery.

The most common type used to correct astigmatism is LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis).

In LASIK, the doctor makes a small incision on the surface of the eye to create a small flap of tissue, which is lifted up.

Then the doctor uses a cool laser beam to correct the irregular shape of the cornea.

Recovery usually is quick and painless.

When LASIK surgery was introduced, I took a wait-and-see attitude. The surgery clearly produced short-term improvement in vision, with minimal risks. But I was concerned about the possibility that over the longer term the surgery would become less effective, or there would be adverse effects. Today, after nearly 30 years of its use, I’m much more confident in recommending this procedure to my patients.

It’s the unusual person, though, who needs surgery to correct astigmatism.

Glasses have always worked for me, as did contact lenses.

I think eyeglasses are one of the most important medical discoveries – right up there with antibiotics, X-rays and vaccines. So many children and young adults begin to lose clear vision due to myopia, astigmatism and other common eye problems. Without eyeglasses, society would be much less happy and productive.
