POLL Centenarian has advice for us all YESTERDAY’S Two words: “Don’t smoke.”

That’s what Orville Olson said when I asked if he had any advice for us younger folks on the eve of his 100th birthday. I had gone to his farm home north of Cortland to interview him in anticipation of his turning 100 Monday, and ended with the above question.

He expanded on that, explaining that his grandfather made a deal with him when he turned 12: He would give Orville a new bike if he promised never to smoke or drink (alcohol) his entire life. Orville eagerly agreed and got the birthday present. He has, from time to time, had a beer or glass of wine at a social occasion, but for the most part has steered clear of both evils.

Spending time with him was rewarding, as he told life stories and family anecdotes that began not with him, but his father who came to America at 19 and his grandfather, Nelson, on the other side of his family who bought the farm in 1889, where Orville has lived his entire life.

About his birth: “When the time came, my grandmother, who was a registered nurse, sent word to Doc Nesbitt, and he drove out here as fast as he could in his horse and buggy.” That’s when Orville was delivered at home, only a stone’s throw from where he now lives in an adjacent house. His original family home was torn down and replaced some years ago, and his daughter, Andra, lives there now.

Olson went through the 10th grade in Cortland, which is as far as school went there, then transferred to Sycamore, where he graduated in 1935. He is the only one left out of 76 in his class – Martha Wetzel being the last classmate to pass away, he said.

Asked about his early life, Orville told about his father being a dairy farmer who died from

They didn’t get a power line strung past the farm until 1926, and that’s when the family bought their first radio. Then they added a Motorola TV in 1955. He has not joined the computer and internet age yet, but does have a small cellphone in his pocket that he showed me.

He has so many good stories that I have scant room to tell any here. But here are a couple more for now: Starting when he was 5, his mother and he would walk down the road to the Cortland train depot and take the morning short-line train from there up to Sycamore to shop. Then late in the day, they would get back into the single passenger car and come home.

That same depot is where his father took their milk cans to be hauled to Borden in Chicago, he recalls.

He also owns a 2008 Toyota Prius, which he drove to the secretary of state’s office in DeKalb recently and passed his driver’s test with no problem. Plus, he has three old tractors he has in the barn behind his house. ...

TODAY’S TALKER 911 SERVICE RESTORED COUNTYWIDE

DEKALB – The county’s 911 system was restored to its full functionality just before 8 a.m. Thursday, bringing to a close the longest system outage in the county’s history.

Frontier Communications, which supplies the 911 system, was able to repair a hardware and software failure that affected equipment at its DeKalb office, the company said in a written statement.

The outage began about 7 p.m. Tuesday, with callers to 911 getting a busy signal. A series of

workaround fixes were implemented, with callers first able to get through only to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office on a single dedicated line, and later being able to connect to all four local 911 centers.

On Thursday morning, full 911 capabilities were restored, enabling callers to be transferred to the correct emergency operators, and allowing them to see information about the location of the caller and their callback number on a screen.

NIU’S BAKER: RECRUITING, RETENTION TOP PRIORITIES University also might be looking to cut spending

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Student enrollment and retention at Northern Illinois University, along with the school’s fiscal outlook, were the focus of the president’s presentation Thursday during a town hall meeting with students and other stakeholders.

“It’s critically important for the institution, as a whole, to know where we’re going and be able to dovetail and help move that effort forward,” NIU President Doug Baker said, explaining the purpose of the forums.

He and members of his cabinet addressed a crowd that filled the Regency Room at the Holmes Student Center. In addition to his talk about

enrollment, recruitment and finances, Provost Lisa Freeman discussed the university’s program prioritization effort.

Not only is the state of Illinois to blame for short-changing public universities including NIU, officials said, but also the inability of legislators in Springfield to agree on a budget or address pension and other financial crises has hampered efforts to attract new students. Baker’s address this year didn’t offer the fiscal optimism that he did last year. In fact, he announced that the university might be looking to reduce spending by $20 million.

“We still have uncertainties about what’s going to happen in the next legislative session, and how much

additional revenue we’re going to receive in our appropriation this semester,” Baker said. “We’ll see what happens after the election.”

In April, lawmakers appropriated $26 million to NIU – only about 40 percent of the $63 million the university had budgeted. With the stopgap state budget approved June 30, NIU is set to receive $48.3 million for this school year.

Senior staff are expected to look at their respective division budgets and devise a plan that includes cost reductions of between 5 percent and 10 percent, Baker said. He didn’t rule out layoffs being part of the downsizing.

“I can’t say right now,” Baker said about the possibility of staff cuts, adding he wants to see what the divi-

sion heads come up with.

Last month, NIU reported another academic year kicking off with fewer students than the previous one. Enrollment was down 5.5 percent this first semester compared with fall 2015. This semester saw 19,015 sign up for classes, according to data released last month by university officials.

Baker said Thursday that the university is working to increase the student head count. He announced a recruitment task force that is focused on bringing students to the campus.

“We’ve been working hard on retention the last three years,” he said.

“On the recruitment side, we’ve got amazing opportunities, so we’re going to work very hard on that.”

Army medical officials share information about Zika virus

DeKALB – Most people who carry the Zika virus experience no symptoms, but the threat of its transmission causing severe birth defects has spiked public concern, Lt. Col. Roseanne Ressner said.

U.S. Army officials shared information about the virus in a presentation Wednesday at Northern Illinois University to educate students about the spread of Zika and how it is being handled nationally.

Ressner, an infectious-disease specialist, said that up to 80 percent of carriers report no symptoms, while others experience rashes, fevers and flu-like symptoms.

“You might say, ‘OK, this is a mild disease; it really doesn’t kill people.

Why do we care?’ ” Ressner said. “I think most people have seen on the news the pictures of microcephaly that have become the face of Zika; so while it’s a mild disease, there are potentially really devastating neurologic outcomes.”

Infants with microcephaly suffer a rare neurological condition in which the head is significantly smaller than normal, but other abnormalities such as hearing loss might surface later as well, Ressner said.

“Even if a baby was born with a normal head circumference – so not microcephalic – there is so much potential for the late-onset neurologic findings,” she said.

Ressner said the first report of Zika spreading sexually occurred in 2008, and part of the challenge in preventing the spread of this virus is convincing the public to use contraceptive barriers during sex.

Maj. Tatjana Calvano said that even with the rate of HIV infections being reduced in the past decade, 50,000 new cases still are reported each year in the U.S. “We all know how difficult it is to counsel our patients to use barrier protection,” Calvano said. “We have struggled with other sexually transmitted diseases, and we continue to struggle.”

Andrew Digate, director of health services at NIU, said the university is proactive about limiting the spread of disease on campus.

“One of the key ways to make sure someone is not going to be exposed is to practice safe sex, and we promote that here extensively with our students,” Digate said.

Dr. Brian LaMere, chief of medical staff at NIU, said the university has a

protocol if a student is diagnosed with the Zika virus, but aspects of it are flexible for new developments that might emerge.

“Because of the nature of Zika, because it’s a public health issue, if we see someone concerned they might

have it, we would immediately get involved with the DeKalb County Health Department and the Illinois Department of Public Health to help guide what we do,” LaMere said.

LaMere said that active infection is not likely to occur in Illinois the way it has in Miami-Dade County, Florida, because the mosquito that carries the virus is not in this area.

“The main people we are worried about are pregnant women; and since we don’t do pregnancy care here, we would refer them to their OB-GYN doctor,” he said.

With the emergence of Zika, travel counseling at NIU now includes referring students to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for the most up-to-date information about the risk in particular areas, LaMere said.

“There are no treatments and no medicine,” he said. “So our work is largely counseling or preventative, like avoiding mosquitoes and using barrier protection.”

DeKalb man guilty of child sex assault

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A DeKalb man faces at least 54 years in prison after being convicted of nine counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child involving a 6-year-old girl.

A jury of four men and eight women convicted Jeremiah P. Riggs, 37, formerly of the 1100 block of Market Street, DeKalb, after deliberating for about three hours Thursday after a day and half of testimony.

Riggs was arrested in December 2013 after being accused of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child. A month later, a grand jury returned a 15-count indictment against Riggs that accused him of repeatedly raping

Thursday. He told the jury that he was extremely intoxicated when he was interviewed by DeKalb police.

During the interview, a video recording of which was shown to the jury, he told police that he had inappropriate contact with the girl.

On the stand, Riggs denied ever having inappropriate contact with the girl and talked at length about the drugs he had consumed before the interview. Riggs said he continued to take Xanax while at the police station.

A former Kishwaukee Hospital emergency department doctor had testified earlier that when Riggs was brought to the hospital on the evening of Dec. 11, 2013, after being questioned by police, he was in a stupor and could have died without medical intervention.

On cross-examination, DeKalb County Assistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Klein pointed out multiple instances where Riggs’ testimony contradicted testimony he gave in April. Riggs said that he had memory

problems and that his faulty recollection didn’t mean he was lying.

After the verdict was read and Judge Robbin Stuckert revoked his bail, Riggs cried as he hugged and kissed two supporters, including his mother, in the gallery.

Riggs is to be sentenced at a hearing set for 1:30 p.m. Nov. 7. He could be sentenced to six to 30 years in prison for each of the nine counts. He would have to serve the terms consecutively.

Klein said she hadn’t decided on what sentence she and fellow prosecutor Alicia Caplan would request at that hearing. McCulloch said he would ask for the minimum.

Amie Riggs, the convicted man’s ex-wife, said she was pleased with verdict.

“We’re happy that he was found guilty,” she said outside the courthouse. “Nine counts means he’ll have to serve at least 54 years at 85 percent.

I know he won’t ever be bothering ... children again.”

She is survived by her children, Laura Kay Shirley (William Kempton) of Minneapolis; Linda Marie Shirley of Jamaica, NY; Susan Leigh Ryder (James Mills) of Oneonta, NY; Julia Anne Ryder (David Hansen) of St. Paul, MN; Lisa Elaine Shirley of Yonkers, NY; and Louis James Shirley (Anne Marie Gaura) of DeKalb. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Alice Wenderoth (Paul) Finfrock of Bloomington. She was proud of her grandchildren, Mari Shirley Kempton, Andrew Daniel Ryder Mills, Tyler James Kempton, Alexei Furs, and Colin James Ryder Mills and loved them dearly.

She was married to John Douglas Ryder in 1954 and later to James Robert Shirley in 1972. She attended Illinois State Normal University in Normal, IL, and received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Northern

Illinois University in DeKalb, IL. She remained a life-long scholar and traveled extensively in Europe. She lived and taught for two years in Xian, China alongside her husband professor James Shirley. She was passionate about art, languages, history and social justice. She enjoyed lively discussions, music, playing bridge and gathering with her dear friends.

Helen was known as an excellent chef and shared her love of food with many. She was a devoted wife, mother, and friend. She will be treasured in the memories of those who knew her and loved her.

A ceremony in celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

Alan R. Anderson, 82, of DeKalb, IL, died of leukemia Monday, Sept. 12, 2016, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Aug. 11, 1934, in Chicago, the son of Alex R. and Velma M. (Zwicky) Anderson.

Al led a creative life from singing in the piano bars in the 1950s to raising a family and working as a commercial artist into his late 1970s. He had a successful career as an artist working for Childs | Dreyfus Group in Chicago. Throughout his life Al also freelanced and produced a large body of original paintings.

Al married Rose Scott on June 17, 1979.

They collaborated in the local art scene wherever they lived including Wisconsin, Oregon, Arkansas and Illinois.

Al was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving the 4935 Air Base Squadron as an air policeman, airman first class from 1952 TO 1956.

Survivors include his wife, Rose; two

The victim testified about the sexual assaults during the trial, as did police officers and Monique Heilemeier, a forensic interviewer with the Children’s Advocacy Center in DeKalb.

On Wednesday, when the girl took the stand, she was flanked by a group of more than two dozen members of Bikers Against Child Abuse, a nonprofit group that aims to create a safer environment for abused children.

The girl wore the group’s motorcycle vest on the witness stand.

Before the trial began, Riggs’ attorney, DeKalb County Public Defender Tom McCulloch, tried to get statements Riggs made to police suppressed, along with other evidence.

McCulloch had argued, among other things, that Riggs was under the influence of alcohol, marijuana and a large amount of Xanax when he spoke to police.

Those motions were denied.

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DEKALB – Parents expressed outrage Thursday at allegations that District 428 Superintendent Doug Moeller had stalked and intimidated DeKalb High School Principal Michele Albano.

Meanwhile, Albano’s predecessor in the job, Tamra Ropeter, said what happened to her might have given Albano good cause to fear for her career.

The school board sent a notification Wednesday afternoon to families of the district’s 6,300 students stating that Moeller had been placed on paid administrative leave that day.

“If accusations like that are made, you should be suspended without pay,” said Jenna Baird, who has a son and daughter enrolled at DeKalb High School.

It is common for workers to be

placed on paid leave while an employer investigates the legitimacy of claims against them and determines what, if any, discipline is needed. Moeller has not been accused of a crime, and the school district will, for now, continue to pay his $213,484 salary.

He was placed on leave after Albano requested and received an order of protection against him Monday. In her request for a protective order, filed in Kane County circuit court, Albano alleged that Moeller had become upset with her after she refused to go out with him Sept. 11, and accused him of stalking her, threatening to ruin her career and intimidating her with a gun.

Ropeter, whose almost-four-year tenure as principal at DHS ended in February, said her example might have added to Albano’s concerns. Ropeter was placed on leave after a controversial Black History Month assembly led to racial tensions and threats on social media, with more than 800 students missing school the next day. Ropeter did not return to the school – she later

would resign when it was clear her contract would not be renewed – and Moeller took over her job duties for the rest of the school year.

“When I was made aware that [Albano said] he threatened that he could ruin her career, all I could think was that I was living proof that he was able to ruin a person’s career. He did ruin my career,” said Ropeter, who said the controversy and her being put on leave left her unable to find another job in public education. “I think she probably thought it was a threat that he could pursue.”

Other parents and community stakeholders said they were shocked by the allegations in Albano’s court filing.

Tamra Migonis said District 428 students and community members deserve better.

“We would like to see some professional conduct ... those are six-figure jobs,” said Migonis, whose son is a freshman at DHS. “It just seems like a lot of extracurricular business going on.”

Albano was out at least one day this week for what she said was an unrelated medical issue. Both she and Moeller were absent from Tuesday’s school board meeting.

A judge ordered Moeller to stay at least 100 feet from Albano’s Elgin home and DeKalb High School “unless on official business in the presence of another administrator.” His home in DeKalb is less than four miles from DHS. His Elgin residence is 1½ miles from hers.

The order remains in effect until Oct. 6, when a court hearing is scheduled. There is no record of Kane County prosecutors filing any criminal charges in the matter.

Albano came to DeKalb from Bolingbrook High School, part of Valley View District 365U, where she had been assistant principal for curriculum. She previously had worked with Moeller in Elgin District U-46. She was selected to fill the principal position April 19, with a $135,000 base salary.

She officially started July 1.

District officials have remained tight-lipped about the incident. School board President Victoria Newport did not return Daily Chronicle calls inquiring about when an interim leader might be hired. The email to parents indicated that the school board was in the process of hiring one.

CHICAGO – Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced a $36 million mentoring initiative for thousands of youths from high-crime neighborhoods and asked for the community’s help Thursday in a major speech outlining his plan to fight and prevent violence in the nation’s third-largest city.

Along with recent police reforms and statewide legislation, he highlighted a new public-private partnership to help an estimated 7,200 youths over the next three years. The invitation-only speech came as the city has seen a spike in crime and his police department is under an ongoing U.S. Department of Justice investigation.

“Every one of us has a role to play in rebuilding the vital partnership between our police and the community,” Emanuel said in his speech at Malcolm X College, on Chicago’s near West Side.

Twp. voters asked if they would secede from Cook County

ORLAND TOWNSHIP – Voters in Orland Township will consider a referendum in November to leave Cook County and join adjacent Will County.

The Daily Southtown reported that the referendum is an advisory question, which means the south suburban Chicago township will remain in Cook County no matter the result of the vote.

Township Supervisor Paul O’Grady said it is an issue he has heard about regularly from constituents – specifically, after Cook County raised sales taxes.

Hunters asked to report suspected deer virus cases

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is asking hunters to be on the lookout for possible cases of a virus that can cause die-offs of white-tailed deer.

So far this year, there have been 53 suspected cases of epizootic hemorrhagic disease, which is transmitted by midges that hatch from muddy areas along lakes and rivers.

The worst year for the disease in Illinois was 2012, when more than 2,000 cases were reported across 76 counties.

This year’s cases are mostly clustered in east-central and northeast Illinois.

Rockford to mourn 4 homicide victims with funeral, vigil

ROCKFORD – Rockford residents are planning to remember four homicide victims with a candlelight vigil.

The Rockford Register-Star reported that organizers will have a public visitation Sunday, and funeral and vigil Monday, for 27-year-old Keandra-Kiana Austin and her three children.

The family was found dead in their home Sept. 17 after an intense fire.

Rockford police said they are homicide victims. They have not released causes of death, but said the fire was deliberately set.

Illinois Executive Mansion work to follow funding rules

SPRINGFIELD – An agreement shows that a privately funded renovation of the Illinois Executive Mansion in Springfield will follow wage and bidding rules required of traditional taxpayer-funded construction.

The State Journal-Register obtained the agreement between the state’s Capital Development Board and the nonprofit Illinois Executive Mansion Association via an open records request.

The mansion association is leading efforts to raise private money for an estimated $16 million renovation of the historic

home. As of summer, the campaign led by Gov. Bruce Rauner had raised $4.5 million.

Turning to the private sector for renovation of the 161-year-old mansion relies on a 2014 state law that allows the board to comply with the terms of “gifts” as long as the donated products and services cover a majority of project costs.

The association will select contractors and pay the construction bills. In return, the CDB agreed to allow mansion association contractors access to the mansion and grounds. They will also provide a project liaison to oversee the work.

The Rauner administration efforts to move traditional state functions to the private sector have drawn criticism from Democratic lawmakers and labor groups concerned that private fundraising is an attempt to bypass traditional state rules while weakening unions.

The goal is complete the renovation by August 2018.

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Donald Trump’s advisers are urging him to keep his cool during next week’s presidential debate and resist attempts by Hillary Clinton to provoke him with questions about his business record, wealth or controversial comments about minorities.

The focus underscores the campaign’s concern that too many Americans still don’t believe the Republican has the temperament to be president, which could be a difference-maker in a close race with Clinton.

“He can’t let Hillary get under his skin,” said Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker and Trump adviser.

Gingrich is part of a rotating cast of politicians and policy experts traveling with Trump on his private plane for midflight debate preparations, according to Republicans familiar with the preparations.

Others include retired Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn, who is advising Trump on national security, and economist Peter Navarro.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a loyal Trump supporter, has been helping on issues such as the federal government’s relationship with the states.

Trump has eschewed the kind of mock debate setups candidates traditionally use to get ready for the high-pressure events and hasn’t tapped anyone to play Clinton in his prep sessions. But aides said he is studying written briefing material on domestic and international issues and is also talking through topics with advisers.

Trump backers said the real estate mogul is prepared to stay steady no matter what Clinton throws at him.

“We’re going to see the debate prep making sure that she’s not going to be able to pull him somehow off the message,” said Rep. Chris Collins, a New York Republican who is one of Trump’s most loyal backers in Congress. He spoke shortly after joining other supportive lawmakers for a meeting Thursday with Trump political director Jim Murphy.

TULSA, Okla. – Prosecutors charged a white Oklahoma police officer with first-degree manslaughter Thursday, less than a week after she fatally shot an unarmed black man on a city street and just days after police released graphic videos, saying in court documents that the officer “reacted unreasonably.”

Kunzweiler said arrangements were being made for Shelby’s surrender.

Shelby “reacted unreasonably by escalating the situation from a confrontation with Mr. Crutcher, who was not responding to verbal commands and was walking away from her with his hands held up, becoming emotionally involved to the point that she overreacted,” according to an affidavit filed with the charge.

The swift action in Tulsa stood in contrast to Charlotte, North Carolina, where police refused under mounting pressure Thursday to release video

of the shooting of another black man this week and the National Guard was called in to try to a head off a third night of violence. Demonstrations in Tulsa since Crutcher’s death have been consistently peaceful.

Dashcam and aerial footage of the shooting and its aftermath showed Crutcher walking away from Shelby with his arms in the air. The footage does not offer a clear view of when Shelby fired the single shot that killed Crutcher. Her attorney has said Crutcher was not following police commands and Shelby opened fire when the man began to reach into his SUV window.

But Crutcher’s family immediately discounted that claim, saying the father of four posed no threat to the officers. They also pointed to an enlarged photo from police footage that appears to show Crutcher’s window was rolled up. And police said Crutcher did not have gun on him or in his vehicle.

An affidavit filed Thursday said Shelby told police homicide investigators that “she was in fear for her life and thought Mr. Crutcher was going to kill her.”

D-428 tested in handling allegations about Moeller

It was disappointing to read the allegations that DeKalb High School Principal Michele Albano made against DeKalb School District 428 Superintendent Doug Moeller this week.

Albano told a Kane County judge in court papers that Moeller – her boss – has stalked her, intimidated her with a gun, drunkenly called and texted her, and threatened to ruin her career with “a completely fabricated story.”

In response, District 428 officials placed Moeller on paid leave Wednesday – although in their announcement to parents, they made no mention of Albano’s allegations.

Kane County prosecutors have not filed charges in connection with the matter.

We would have liked to have seen more transparency from the school board. Moeller is the top district employee and draws a salary of $213,000 this year, making him one of the highest-paid public employees in the county. Albano, who is only weeks into her first school year with the district, alleged that her boss’s behavior had become erratic and that he had told her he kept a loaded gun in his vehicle.

Once a judge ordered Moeller to stay 100 feet from Albano – including her place of work, DeKalb High School – that information could have been shared with the public.

This incident is sensational, it is concerning and it is embarrassing for the school district.

But it’s unfair to blame District 428 and its hundreds of teachers, administrators, aides and other employees for a situation involving two adults.

The district is bigger than that, and its mission is more important than that.

As this situation involves district employees, we probably shouldn’t expect grand pronouncements or swift action from the school board. People have rights in the workplace, and in this case, no one has been charged with any crime.

If there are policy decisions that might prevent future problems, they should be considered. But the fact is, schools are human institutions, and sometimes people do nasty things.

That does not excuse the behavior Albano describes in her request for an order of protection. Sexual harassment is unacceptable, and if it has occurred, there must be consequences.

We also want to see District 428 move on from this episode, and make a prudent choice when it comes selecting the person who will lead the district forward from where it is now.

The steps that board members take in the wake of this incident – and the way that district administrators, teachers and others step up to continue the schools’ mission – will be the best indicator of character of district.

Trump’s shameless ‘philanthropy’

Where did Donald Trump get the harebrained idea that he will get Mexico to pay for a new border wall? Or his boast that he will make Arab states pay for refugee safe zones in Syria?

Perhaps from the success he has had sleazily diverting money other people had donated to charity into paying off his business obligations.

“It’s called OPM. I do that all the time in business. It’s called other people’s money,” Trump said Tuesday. “There’s nothing like doing things with other people’s money.”

One of the things he did with other people’s money, according to revelations painstakingly uncovered by The Washington Post’s David A. Fahrenthold, was fund his namesake charity, from which donations appeared to come from him. Trump then used some of that funding to pay off business liabilities. In one instance, he settled a dispute with the town of Palm Beach, Florida, over $120,000 in unpaid fines by promising to donate $100,000 to a veterans group.

Instead of donating personal funds, he transferred some money – OPM – from his charitable foundation. Similarly, the GOP nominee used other people’s charitable giving to settle a dispute over a hole-in-one tournament held at the Trump National Golf Club in New York.

At the time, his foundation was funded mostly by a big donation from pro-wrestling magnates Vince and Linda McMahon.

These revelations come on top of findings that Trump and his wife used foundation money to win items at charitable auctions, such as

a helmet signed by quarterback Tim Tebow and not one but two paintings of Trump.

It is likely that this sort of behavior is illegal, because charities are not supposed to engage in “self-dealing” – activities that directly benefit the bottom lines of those running them.

But even if Trump’s approach to “philanthropy” is not technically illegal, it is still slimy and shameless. Sometimes, charities associated with wealthy families or businesses tiptoe near ethical lines – but charity experts said Trump’s activity appears to be brazen.

“Brazen” also describes the Trump campaign’s response to The Post’s reporting. As the revelations have mounted, Trump spokesmen have accused The Post of “badgering” them and said that Fahrenthold is “biased” and “a little obsessed.” Although the campaign insisted that The Post’s reporting “is peppered with inaccuracies and omissions,” it pointed to none and has offered no evidence telling a different story.

In fact, Trump has a secret trove of documents that could help to clarify how much he has really given to charity in recent years, what his business dealings look like and potential conflicts of interest should he be elected president. These documents are his tax returns, which he still refuses to reveal, bucking decades of precedent. Trump is the least transparent major-party presidential nominee in recent memory – and the one who Americans have the most reason to fear is hiding something.

down the days until it finally ends – but for many other Americans, politics is sort of a droning background noise most of the time, and they only really pay attention in the past few weeks of the campaign.

That might be more helpful now than it was in the old, pre-internet days of three broadcast networks and a public TV station. Back in the 1960s and 1970s, it was harder to be isolated from big political news. So it’s not that any one particular ad does much, but collectively these things do eventually remind people that it’s time to pay attention.

My real defense of celebrity participation in politics, however, is that even if it has no effect at all it’s still good, healthy fun.

In particular, over the last two or three decades, the U.S. has become a nation with more patriotic ritu-

als that evoke its military (such as flyovers at sports events) rather than those centered on democracy as the core of the nation. With all due respect to the military, this should dismay us. The U.S. should be proud of its democracy, and that means (among other things) celebrating elections, which are symbolically (and to some extent substantively, although that’s more complicated) the central action of a mass democracy.

Which seems to be what Whedon’s celebrity-studded video is all about: registering to vote and voting. I’ll choose to interpret the celebrities’ message not as the elitism of famous people, but as one of participation for everyone. And that’s worth celebrating.

There it was, in a news story by Philip Rucker and Dan Balz: A major-party candidate had peddled lies for five years, had finally been forced to admit the truth, but was refusing to take any responsibility for his lies and their outcome.

“Everybody loves a winner,” Conway said.

Last Friday, Trump said he was going to make a “major statement” about the whole birther mess. And he was going to make this statement from his lavish – which is to say tasteless – new hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue, just blocks from the White House.

The press usually goes along with Trump’s buffoonery, giving him virtually unlimited airtime, internet coverage and newspaper space regardless of what he has to say. This time, however, he went a little far.

He managed to squeeze a lie into the nothing he had to say.

“Hillary Clinton and her campaign of 2008 started the birther controversy.

I finished it. I finished it. You know what I mean,” Trump said. “President Barack Obama was born in the United States, period.”

With that, Trump left the stage, taking no questions and making no apologies.

Two days later, John Dickerson had Conway on “Face the Nation.”

Dickerson: Donald Trump advocated something for five years that was a lie. Why did he do that?

Conway: Well, you’re going to have to ask him, but again, I think that this

is a sideshow now.

Dickerson said our next president may have to send young Americans off “to die in a war” and, therefore, whether the president is a truth teller or a liar might be important.

Conway reacted as if Dickerson were speaking Martian and said the press really ought to be concentrating on Trump’s new child care plan.

(Although, she did not say whether Trump was telling the truth about his new child care plan.)

On Saturday, President Obama addressed the annual Congressional Black Caucus Foundation dinner.

“There’s an extra spring in my step tonight,” he said with a broad smile.

“I don’t know about you guys, but I am so relieved that the whole birther thing is over. I mean, ISIL, North Korea, poverty, climate change – none of those things weighed on my mind like the validity of my birth certificate,” he said as the audience laughed.

Truth and falsity are important, but so is balance. Having just quoted a Democrat, I’ll end with the words of a Republican, Abraham Lincoln: “No man has a good enough memory to be a successful liar.”

That may be why Trump will fail in the end; he simply won’t be able to keep track of all his lies.

Kell was honored for his 65 years of membership in the DeKalb County Forty and Eight at the group’s Promenade held in Sandwich on Aug. 3. $5,000 in scholarships awarded to swine producers DAILY CHRONICLE The Superior Young Producer Award program rewards 4-H and FFA members who excel in their knowledge of the livestock industry in five specific species, including beef, dairy, horse, sheep and swine. The contests are held during the Illinois State Fair Junior Livestock shows.

In total, $25,000 is awarded annually in the five contests. This year, the lifetime total dollars awarded topped the half-million-dollar mark for the 21-year history of the Superior Young Producer program. The Illinois 4-H Foundation manages the distribution of funds to support the scholarships which are provided by Archer Daniels Midland. The winners also received plaques sponsored by the Land of Lincoln Purebred Livestock Breeders Association and Illinois State Fair.

Five winners were selected in the swine division of the contest. This is a three-phase competition challenging the young people’s knowledge of swine production. The five overall winners each receive a $1,000 college scholar-

ship. They are Bailey Hunt, Sycamore, DeKalb County; Bailey Martenson, Shabbona, DeKalb County; Bryce Bedeker, Verona, Grundy County; Bailey Sigrist, Farina, Marion County; and Lexi Meurer, Ashton, Lee County.

The first phase was a swine management test relating to nutrition, health, reproduction, marketing and other swine-related information. The top three contestants for this phase included Jordynn Marcum, Gibson City, Iroquois County; Bedeker; and McIayn Musick, Camp Point, Adams County.

In the skill-a-thon phase, the top three included Hunt, Bedeker and Sigrist.

The third phase of the Superior Young Swine Producer Contest was a judging contest. The top three contestants for this phase included James Dobbles, Hunt and Sigrist.

“This contest provides youth an opportunity to showcase their knowledge of the industry while competing for valuable scholarships to help them pursue their career goals,” Dan Jennings, University of Illinois Extension 4-H animal science educator, said in a news release.

Douglas having standout season heading into contest against Barbs

ecarifio@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – After Jack Douglas’ throw ended up in the hands of a Yorkville defender, Kaneland’s junior quarterback got right back to work.

On the next possession, he led the winning drive against the Foxes. Not bad for his fourth varsity start.

Douglas has been putting up huge numbers for the Knights this year as Kaneland (3-1 overall, 1-0 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) is set to host DeKalb (3-1, 1-0) in a game that will have big implications in the conference – plus is also the Knights’ homecoming game.

“It’s going to be one of the biggest games of the year,” Douglas said. “It’s going to be a fun game; There’s going to be a lot of people there, it’s going to be high intensity. We just have to play our game and see how we do.”

Douglas has thrown for 814 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions while completing 54 percent of his passes. He also is doing it with a revamped receiving corps – Kaneland not only graduated its quarterback last year, but its top receivers as well.

Matt Noel has 15 catches for 329 yards and four touchdowns, while Josh Marczuk has 17 catches, 230 yards and two scores.

“We’ve all been great friends for awhile so we all have that chemistry,” Douglas said. “So I think that’s really paying off. And we put in a lot of time in the summer putting in work and running routes.”

With both teams bringing potent offenses into the game, Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly said he thinks having Douglas, Marczuk and Noel gives the Knights a strong chance.

“We feel with our offense we can come back against anybody with Jack and our receivers,” Fedderly said. “If we have to do that, we can. Hopefully we can run the ball and hang on to the ball and limit their opportunities, though.”

Although it will be the Barbs’ first time facing Douglas in a varsity game, DeKalb coach Matt Weckler said he’s pretty familiar with what Douglas is bringing to the table.

“He throws the ball pretty well,” Weckler said. “He’s only a junior, and some of our younger kids have worked with him in camps. We have a little

We’ve seen him in 7-on-7s this summer. He’s a very good quarterback who makes good reads and can make all the throws in their scheme. In addition he’s a good athlete who can do good things there.”

After last week’s 26-21 win in Yorkville, Fedderly said he has even more confidence in the poise of his quarterback.

“He’s a real mature kid, and what I liked about [last week’s winning drive], the drive before it he threw a pick,” Fedderly said. “He didn’t let it get him down and came back and led that drive.”

Douglas said he was focused on the task at hand.

“I kind of just told myself to keep my head up and not think about the last possession,” Douglas said. “So I kind of just forgot about it and said we’re going to score on this drive. And we did.”

Both teams also have effective running games, with DeKalb’s Jelante Young averaging just fewer than 100 yards a game this year (57-386-5), while Jonathan Alstott has 229 yards and six touchdowns.

Not only is it homecoming for the Knights – the Barbs’ fan base has been travelling really well this year – something Fedderly expects will create an exciting situation Friday at Peterson Field.

“It’s going to be a great atmosphere and they’re a great team,” Fedderly said. “On film they looked great. We know that we’re going to have to give our best effort, but we’re happy to have this opportunity to play these guys.”

Sycamore Spartans at LaSalle-Peru Cavaliers

Time: 7:15 p.m.

Records: Spartans 3-1, Cavaliers 1-3 Last week: Sycamore lost 28-12 to DeKalb; LaSalle-Peru lost 49-0 at Sterling, its third straight loss after opening with a 42-6 home win against East Moline (0-4).

Last meeting: Although the teams have been a part of the Northern Illinois Big 12 since its formation in 2010, it’s the first time the two schools are playing as members of the conference. They haven’t played since at least 1995.

Scouting the Cavaliers: They’re looking for their first winning season, and playoff berth, since 2009. Jose Medina is in his second year as coach, taking over a team that was winless in 2014 and guiding them to a 3-6 mark last year.

Before the blowout loss at Sterling last week – the Spartans lost, 38-6, at the Warriors in the opener – the Cavaliers led Bloomington Central Catholic 32-21 with

7:08 left before losing, 34-32.

What’s at stake: It’s not as if the path from 1-3 to the playoffs is an easy one – but one of these teams will be looking at a 1-4 mark after this game.

Running back Chris Pawola had 86 rushing yards and a score against DeKalb to bring his season total to 308 on 49 carries with five touchdowns. He also caught five passes for 90 yards. Quarterback Ty Sulaver had one of his biggest games, throwing for 208 yards for the year, he’s complete 54 percent of his passes for 624 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions.

Jordan Tolzin had a six-catch, 95-yard game against the Barbs, and has 17 catches for 248 yards and two touchdowns this year.

“I think we need to get better each week, which we have,” Sycamore coach Joe Ryan said. “Sometimes it doesn’t show when you play the level of teams we’ve been playing.

We still need to run the ball a little better and get off field on third downs – those are still crucial things for us.”

Scouting the Cardinals: The season started with a 42-37 win against North Boone, but the losses have gotten progressively worse since then – 10 points to Winnebago, 35 to Byron and a 47-0 defeat last week at Johnsburg. This week’s game is the third in a row against an undefeated team, with a pair of 3-1 teams waiting the next two weeks.

What’s at stake: The winner is going to be in prime position – basically a win against Morris – from winning the conference.

Both teams have been putting up plenty of points this year – the Barbs 31.8 points per game, the Knights 28.5. Both also were cruising in the first two weeks before somewhat unexpected Week 3 losses. Both bounced back with conference wins last week.

“After a good win against a good Sycamore team, it absolutely built up our confidence a little bit,” DeKalb coach Matt Weckler said. “We got things going in the right direction and have our mindsets in a positive way.”

Both teams feature prolific passing attacks. Derek Kyler has completed 61 percent of his passes this year for 537 yards and seven touchdowns with just two interceptions. His top target has been Cole Tucker, who has caught half of Kyler’s 34 completions this year for 294 yards and five scores. Tucker also has a pair of return touchdowns.

While the DeKalb passing game is powered by a pair of seniors, two of the three components of the Kaneland passing game are juniors. Junior Jack Douglas has 814 passing yards, and has matched Kyler’s seven touchdowns and two picks. While senior Matt Noel – getting his first significant varsity time this year – leads the area with 329 yards receiving on 15 catches with four scores, junior Josh Marczuk has 17 catches, 230 yards and two TDs. “When you go against the team that moves the ball well and is so effective on offense, the best defense is to not allow them to have it,” Weckler said. “I don’t use the term ball control, that’s not the type of offense we run, but it’s more so getting 3 or 4 yards a play to keep the chains moving.

Big plays aren’t always going to happen, so we just have to be patient enough to be effective and do what the defense allows us to take.”

Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly said that’s basically the Knights’ plan as well.

“That’s going to be hard,” Fedderly said.

“Obviously, they have a lot of talent over there, so we’re hoping we can hold on to the ball a little bit on offense and limit their opportunities. And obviously, we can’t turn the ball over. The more they have the ball, obviously, the more of a chance they have to score.”

Sycamore looks to turn things around at L-P

ecarifio@shawmedia.com It’s deja vu all over again for the Sycamore football team, as the Spartans enter Week 5 with a 1-3 record after a loss to rival DeKalb.

Last year, the Spartans bounced back and made the playoffs. For the same results this time around, the Spartans are looking to start the turnaround when they face LaSalle-Peru (1-3) hoping to pick up a road win in the Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover battle – the first meeting between the two schools as members of the NIB 12.

“There’s a lot of football left, no doubt,” Sycamore coach Joe Ryan said.

“You try to draw upon things you’ve done in the past, and obviously, last year is the recent past that a lot of these kids were involved in. But it’s a different year. It’s not the same thing other than the record. The most important game is this week, and they know that. It’s not about getting five wins in one week.”

The Spartans were 1-3 last year playing a brutal schedule, but rallied to make the playoffs. This year’s schedule has been equally as tough – the three teams that have beaten them are a combined 10-2 (as are the three teams that have beaten the Cavs). But Sycamore still has three games left against teams that are 3-1, plus a trip to 1-3 Yorkville.

“Sycamore is a pretty good football team,” LaSalle-Peru coach Jose Medina said. “They are 1-3, but at the same time they’ve battled in each game, and they’ve lost by a score here or there. We need to hold on to the ball, be consistent, score points when we need to and hold on to the football. Those are the keys to

Continued from page 19 winning the state title in 2013. They also won titles in 1999, 2000, 2003 and 2009.

What’s at stake: The Cogs can start 5-0 for the first time since 2007, when they sprinted to a 6-0 start out of the gate under coach Bill McCarty in his first stint at the school, but lost three of their past five to finish 8-3.

Genoa-Kingston has developed a dominant ground game, with Aidan Simmons leading all area rushers with 414 yards on 64 carries for six scores. Dan Guardi is fourth in the area with 365 yards on 52 carries and three touchdowns.

The Cogs have given up an average of 19 points per game, and haven’t give up more than 20 since a 32-30 Week 1 win at Rockford Lutheran.

The Cavaliers have been hit hard by injuries this year. Starting running back Jeremiah Johnson was lost in Week 2, and quarterback Kennedy Carey has missed time this year. Replacement QB Tyler Martin was 4 for 10 with 31 yards against Sterling last week.

Medina said Thursday he is fairly sure Carey will get be able to start.

“He’s been practicing, not in full

pads. But he’s been practicing,” Medina said. “We’ll see by game time for sure, but I think he’s a go.”

Ryan said the quarterback makes a difference in how they play – they’ll run the ball more with Martin and open it up if it’s Carey.

“I think we need to be sound against both,” Ryan said. “We’ll just need to be more alert to the possibilities of what they’ll do based on who’s in there.”

Like Ryan, Medina said he’s rallying the team around a strong finish and a surge into the postseason.

“It’s one of those things we try to preach to the kids. The possibility is still there,” Medina said. “It’s one of those motivating things we put toward the kids this week. You can take it as a playoff game or whatever you want to call it, but it’s one of those things where you’re going to have to come ready to play.”

Records: Hawks 3-1 overall and Northeastern Athletic Conference; Eagles 4-0 overall and conference Last week: The Hawks beat Mooseheart, 426; The Eagles rolled to a 52-0 win at Alden-Hebron.

Last meeting: The Eagles won, 60-22, in Kirkland.

Scouting the Eagles: They’ve been a force the past two weeks, winning 91-0 against Midland before last week win over the Giants. They started the year with a 45-20 win against South Beloit and beat Westminster Christian, 53-20.

“We’re really excited the direction we’re headed,” Hope coach Matt Kelly said. “He haven’t dropped off. We’ve intensified and have improved every week, which is always a good thing.”

Both lines are anchored by Derrell Grisby, a 6-foot-1, 295-pound tackle, while Bryan Garmon plays both out of the slot and in the backfield.

“Hope is a real good team,” coach Jason Keneway said. “They’re undefeated and

haven’t played a close game yet. They have good size and speed all over the field. They’re well coached and have a pretty good system in place. With that said we’re on pretty good momentum too and we think our guys can hang with them. We’ll have to play well, do our assignments and do the small things right to try and make a game out of it.”

What’s at stake: It’s a familiar start to the year for the Hawks – a lopsided loss in Week 1 to Marquette, followed by three wins against struggling programs heading into the game against Hope Academy. Last year, the Hawks lost the next four to fall out of playoff contention. This year, they’re hoping for different results – even if Hope is just as dangerous as it was last year.

The Hawks lost 55-0 to Marquette in the opener, and Keneway said Friday’s game is another good measuring stick game.

“Marquette let us know where we were at, and this is another situation like that,” Keneway said. “It’s time to find out if we’re a good team

or a great team. You look at our competition for the rest of the year and this is another good baseline test to see if we’re as good as we thought of if we still have work to do.”

Kelly said he’s impressed with how Hiawatha has played the last three weeks.

“They’re playing real good football,” Kelly said.

“They’ve won three in a row. They’re playing with confidence and have that new staff.

That first game when they opened up against Marquette is a tough first game because of their unique offense. Everyone else runs a spread or a traditional I. They’re playing better, faster and we’re expecting them to come out with the same intensity, same energy, same fire they have shown the first four weeks.”

The Hawks offense is a little more dynamic with the return of Josh Hakes, who ran for 92 yards and two scores. Keneway said that opens up Braden Watson to play both at the slot and take carries straight out of the backfield Watson is one of two area backs averaging 100 yards per game this year.

“It was completely out of respect, I know plenty of veterans, I have family members who have fought in wars.

I am very proud to be an American,” she said. “I have a strong belief, so as long as it’s not bringing any negative (attention) to NIU and the volleyball team and not distracting us for what we have to get done here in the MAC.” As far as the volleyball was concerned, the Huskies’ win is the seventh consecutive over the Broncos.

Mary Grace Kelly led the way with 14 kills for the Huskies (9-4 overall, 1-0 in MAC West) and Jenna Radtke and Taylor Krage added 10. Chandler Kinley had 22 assists and Sam Boever added 16 assists for the setters, Krage added 16 digs and Anna Brereton had three aces.

In the opening set, the Broncos made six serving errors but still managed to escape with a 25-23 win nearly letting the Huskies storm back and steal it. Western Michigan held a 2014 lead before the Huskies took a 2322 lead but couldn’t put the Broncos away.

“The start was a little shaky,” Kelly said. “I think it was us being too excited being home for the first time

in a month and the beginning of conference.”

The Huskies bounced back with a dominant second set with a 25-13 victory, including an impressive 6-0 run late in the frame that had two aces by Brereton. After a rough first set by Kelly – she went 1 for 11 on hitting attempts – she had a 6 for 8 performance in the second frame.

Leading wire-to-wire in the third set, the Huskies scored the first five points of the frame before cruising to a 25-15 victory. The Broncos got the first point of the fourth set, but the Huskies answered with a 6-0 run and never relinquished their lead the rest of the way.

Prior to the match, Gooden was awarded a ceremonial volleyball by Northern Illinois athletic director Sean Frazier for breaking the school record for wins by a volleyball coach earlier this season. With the win on Thursday, Gooden has 273 victories in his 15-year career.

“It was really cool,” Radtke said of her coach being honored. “He’s done a really good job here so it was good to see him get recognition for the wins and it’s really good for this program, too.”

Barbs win Game 1 thriller over Sycamore, roll in Game 2

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – The DeKalb volleyball team cruised is way through the second set to secure the straight set victory over Sycamore on Thursday night 25-23, 25-10.

DeKalb (7-4, 2-2 Northern Illinois Big 12) and Sycamore (4-6-2, 2-3) were neck and neck from start to finish in the first set. The biggest lead that was held by either team in the set was held by DeKalb when it went up 8-4.

The trend of trading points was still alive when both teams reached 22 points and the Barbs eventually scratched out a two-point victory.

“During the break I told the team that the game wasn’t over,”DeKalb coach Jamie

DiMaggio said. “We have to continue to respect our opponent,Sycamore is a really good team and they continued to do what they’re supposed to do and they stay disciplined skill-wise.”

Outside hitter Hannah Oehlberg led the Barbs with 13 kills while Jasmine Kemp and Jacqueline Longeville both finished with five kills apiece.

The second set had a more lopsided result after DeKalb jumped out to a 13-5 lead over Sycamore and didn’t look back from there. The Barbs eventually would stretch that lead to 20-8 before sealing the 15-point victory in convincing fashion.

“I’m super proud of the girls,” DiMaggio said.

“They’ve made huge progress in their mental game, skill and just coming together as a

team. I really can’t say better things about them.”

Sycamore held its own in the first set, but almost looked like a different team in the next set – struggling to string together any momentum to force a third set against their archrivals.

“The team I saw on the floor tonight is not the same team I’ve seen work so hard all year,” Sycamore coach Jennifer Charles said. “I think they let the excitement of the game overtake them because I know they can play better than what they played today.

It becomes a mental game and one team is always going to make mistakes because that’s how points are scored. The thing is whether or not you’re going to be defeated or bounce back after each point.”

DeKALB – Chrystal McAlpin became the latest athlete to make a protest during the national anthem.

The sophomore Northern Illinois volleyball player took a knee during the national anthem before the Huskies defeated Western Michigan in four sets in the conference opener on Thursday night at Victor E. Court.

Not standing during the national anthem, a movement made popular

by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick as a form of protest against police brutality that has seen more and more athletes join him, has been met with controversy around the country. However, McAlpin, who is black, said kneeling was a spur of the moment decision – even Huskies coach Ray Gooden wasn’t aware she would do it.

“For me, it was about taking part of the peaceful protest and constantly raising awareness and bringing more attention to the matter of the issue,” McAlpin said. “I was worried about what the audience would think in a way because I know it’s not widely talked about, but I wasn’t worried

about placing myself into it. ... With the recent shootings the past week, it made me realize it can happen to anyone.”

Gooden, who is also black, admitted it would have been nice to been notified that she was going to do it, but also said that he wouldn’t be surprised if more and more athletes use a similar method of protest.

“I think there’s such a rush to judgment on everything, I think it’s more important to understand the pride we have in each other than it’s about I’m standing for something or against something,” Gooden said.

“As a black man, it’s really hard. It’s really hard to say I can’t agree with her or disagree with her because there’s a lot of things going on. Her and I will talk about it and we’ll go from there. ... It would have been nice for me to know. I’m okay admitting I didn’t know about it, but I think the conversation is important afterward to talk about it.”

McAlpin said she understood that some critics of the movement have claimed that it’s anti-military. However, she said that’s not the case and that she would be open to continue to kneel during the anthem.

LAKE FOREST– Questions this week at Halas Hall focused on a Bears run game that is not where it needs to be through two weeks. Brian Hoyer at quarterback should help force the play-calling to the ‘run-first’ mantra we expected, and the offense could utilize its rookie running back more often to help move the football.

With Ka’Deem Carey sidelined due to a hamstring injury this week, Howard figures to get more touches in Dallas. And he’s certainly more accustomed to playing than watching. “[Monday night] definitely uplifting because the first game, it was kind of tough for me because I didn’t play but it definitely humbles you,” Howard said Thursday. “In college, I’m used to being the guy. That was the first time not playing in a game that I was healthy for since my freshman year.”

The former UAB and Indiana back said this is the healthiest he has been “in a long time.”

“I can definitely tell at practice that I feel like I have more speed and I’m getting better conditioning,” he said.

Langford is likely still going to be the lead back considering his experience in pass protection and as a receiver, but Howard showed the coaches that he can step in if the Bears can sustain drives and emphasize the ground game.

You know what the St. Louis Cardinals – one of three teams that are neck and neck for two National League wild-card spots – need in the worst way?

To be greeted by a satiated, unmotivated, self-satisfied Cubs team Friday at Wrigley Field.

The Cardinals need desperately to win this three-game series and gain any possible edge on the San Francisco Giants and New York Mets.

The Cubs? Maybe they need a group nap, or a round of mani-pedis and hot-stone massages.

Yeah, right.

Depression can affect cognitive skills Dear Dr. K: I suffer from depression. My doctor told me depression can cause cognitive impairment. Antidepressants improve my mood – can they help improve my thinking skills as well?

Dear Reader: Depression is more than long bouts of intense sadness. People who suffer from depression also often experience a loss of energy and interest in things they once enjoyed. Depression also can change your ability to think. It can impair your attention and memory, as well as your information processing and decision-making skills. It can affect your ability to adapt your goals and strategies to changing situations. And it can affect executive functioning, the ability to take all the steps to get something done.

It’s hard to answer your question without knowing whether you feel your depression has caused thinking problems. That is, your doctor has told you depression can affect thinking in some people – but are you one of those people? I’m guessing you are, since you asked the question. So I did some homework.

I spoke to my colleague James Cartreine, an instructor in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He noted medications can provide some relief of classic depression symptoms.

But less is known about whether they can improve cognitive impairment related to depression.

Recently, researchers attempted to answer this question as part of a larger study on depression treatment. Their results were published in the journal The Lancet.

The researchers recruited more than 1,000 people with depression who were not taking medication. They then were randomly assigned to take one of three antidepressant drugs for eight weeks. The drugs were escitalopram (Lexapro), sertraline (Zoloft) or venlafaxine-XR (Effexor-XR). The participants went through extensive cognitive testing before and after treatment.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Of these patients, 95 percent showed no improvement on any of the cognitive impairments. And none of the three drugs was better than the others at improving cognitive symptoms. In other words, none of the medications helped improve thinking skills.

There are some limitations to this study.

We don’t know whether the participants had cognitive impairments before they developed depression. And the treatment period was short, only eight weeks.

Still, the results were not that surprising.

Different parts and processes of the brain are responsible for cognitive and emotional functioning. What’s more, antidepressant medications are not designed to treat cognitive impairment. They’re designed to improve a person’s mood, and the ability to appreciate things and to have fun – qualities temporarily lost in many people with depression.

If antidepressants are unlikely to help with thinking problems that can accompany depression, it’s worth looking to non-drug solutions. Problem-solving treatment, for example, can teach people how to improve their problem-solving skills. And cognitive behavioral therapy can train people to recognize and challenge distorted thinking patterns. Another approach is cognitive remediation therapy, which uses practice drills to improve memory and executive function.

If you are having thinking problems, talk with your primary care doctor or psychiatrist about one of these options.

In today’s deal, South is in three no-trump. West kicks off with fourth-highest from his spade suit, and East puts up the jack. What should declarer do? Did West have a more-effective opening lead?

Over North’s takeout double, South’s jump to three no-trump promised 13-15 points with preferably at least two spade stoppers.

South starts with only four top tricks: two spades (given trick one) and two clubs. He can establish three heart and three diamond winners, but that requires knocking out both of those aces, which must rest in the West hand, given his opening bid. If South takes the first trick and plays, say, a diamond, West can snatch the trick and continue with the spade king to set up his suit while he still has the heart ace as an entry.

Declarer’s only chance is to play low from his hand at trick one, hoping that the spades are 6-1, not 5-2.

Suppose East shifts to a club. South wins on the board and drives out the diamond ace. West continues clubs, but declarer ducks that trick, takes the third club, and dislodges the heart ace. He has nine tricks to cash.

West’s killing lead is the spade king, which would swallow his partner’s jack and leave him on lead to continue with the spade 10 should South play low.
