news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Police believe several home invasions and armed robberies over the past two weeks may be linked, but have released few details about the possible motives for the crimes.

“The crimes are potentially linked to one another,” DeKalb Community Relations Officer Kelly Sullivan said in a statement released Wednesday. “At this time, the suspects have not been apprehended.”

Police are seeking at least two suspects in connection with a string of armed robberies and home invasions in the northwest part of the city recently, including several this week.

An armed robbery was reported Saturday in the 900 block of Greenbrier Road. According to a safety bulletin from the Northern Illinois University Department of Police and Public Safety, the incident occurred about 11:20 p.m. Saturday. Police said the suspect was last seen fleeing the area headed west on a dark-colored bicycle.

A home invasion was reported Sunday in the 900 block of Ridge Drive. No one was injured during the incident, which happened shortly after 7 p.m. in the area of 919 Ridge Drive, according to a safety bulletin from NIU police. The suspects, described as three men in their 20s, were seen leaving the area in a silver Pontiac Grand Am, heading south on Blackhawk Road.

Another armed robbery and home invasion were reported Tuesday evening in the 900 block of Fotis Drive. In that case, a male victim told police that he was beaten by two people while in his apartment. One of the sus-

pects displayed a handgun. The suspects took property from the victim including his vehicle, a white 2011 Toyota Camry with tinted windows and Illinois license plate Y 777 405, according to another safety bulletin.

The suspects were described as: A male with brown skin, approximately 5 feet, 9 inches tall, thin build, wearing a blue and white jacket with an Italia logo, a male with brown skin, approximately 6 feet tall, wearing a green beanie hat with a dark green and yellow jacket. He has a star tattoo under his right eye, police said.

In light of the crime wave, DeKalb police advised residents to: • Always be aware of your surroundings.

• Walk with another person or in a group (not alone).

• Walk on well-lit, busy streets – do not take shortcuts.

• Let someone know where you are going and when you will return.

• If approached, obtain a physical description of the suspect(s).

• If a vehicle is involved, try and obtain the license plate number.

• Keep the doors and windows to your residence locked.

• If you receive a knock on your door, identify the person before you open the door.

Investigators are checking leads.

Community members are asked to report any suspicious activity or people to the DeKalb Police Department.

JERUSALEM – Israel’s postal service is delivering letters to a unique address that hasn’t changed in thousands of years.

Ahead of the Jewish high holidays, it took some of the dozens of letters it receives each year that are addressed to God and delivered them to the Western Wall, where visitors traditionally place handwritten notes of prayer and wishes in the cracks between its stones.

The postal service says the letters arrived from all over the world, including Russia, China, France, Nigeria and the United States.

Most had no return address and were addressed to “God,” “Jesus” or “Our Dear Father in Heaven.”

The Western Wall, located in Jerusalem’s Old City, is a retaining wall of the compound where the biblical temples stood. It is one of the Holy Land’s most-visited sites.

Albano claims superintendent stalked her after she turned down advances

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The DeKalb School District 428 board announced Superintendent Doug Moeller had been placed on paid leave Wednesday, two days after the DeKalb High School principal sought an order of protection against him.

On Monday, DeKalb High Principal Michele Albano requested and was granted an order of protection against Moeller by a Kane County judge. In the complaint seeking the order of protection, Albano said that Moeller had become upset with her after she spurned his advances, threatening to ruin her career and intimidating her with a gun.

The order requires Moeller to stay at least 100 feet from Albano’s Elgin home and DeKalb High “unless on official business in the presence of another administrator.”

The order remains in effect until Oct. 6, when a court hearing is scheduled. There is no record of Kane County prosecutors filing any criminal charges in the matter.

Albano did not attend Tuesday’s board meeting and was not at work Wednesday. When reached by phone, she declined to comment on the allegations, whether she wanted to pursue criminal charges, or if she had hired a lawyer.

“I can’t speak about it,” she said. “I really apologize.”

However, she offered a version of events in the court documents she filed Monday.

“Doug was upset with me for refusing to go out with him. I came up with an excuse,” Albano wrote in the complaint. “He called me drunk on three occasions the night of (Sept. 11).”

Albano also wrote that prescription drug use might have been a factor.

“Doug has increasingly demonstrated an unstable and very unpredictable behavior,” she wrote. “He has, at times, blamed this on prescription drugs.”

Albano also alleged that Moeller had brandished a gun in her presence and had threatened to ruin her career.

board],” Albano wrote. “Doug has told me on several occasions that he keeps a loaded gun in his Tahoe. “ ... Doug has brandished his gun in my presence, popping the cartridge out and popping bullets out to show how adept he is with a gun.”

Moeller declined to comment Wednesday on advice from his attorney.

The email from the school board didn’t mention the order of protection.

“We wish to advise our parents and com- Michele munity members that Albano Dr. Doug Moeller has been placed on paid administrative leave,” an email signed by the board said. “The Board of Education is in the process of hiring an interim superintendent.”

“The Board of Education and administration are committed to maintain the quality of education our students deserve. We will keep you updated on further events.”

Moeller’s removal was not the sub-

ject of a public vote during the board meeting Tuesday, although there were two closed-session portions of the meeting. The Illinois Open Meetings Act forbids board members from voting in closed session. Moeller didn’t attend Tuesday’s meeting.

Albano was Moeller’s handpicked choice to replace Tamra Ropeter as principal at DeKalb High. She was working in the Bolingbrook school district at the time.

Moeller and Albano previously worked together in Elgin School District U-46 more than a decade ago. Moeller touted Albano’s work with low-income student populations as a major reason for choosing her.

Board President Victoria Newport didn’t not respond to requests for comment Wednesday.

Board member Howard Solomon said he learned of the decision Tuesday. He said he wasn’t aware of the order of protection or the allegations it contained.

He said that as part of the administrative leave process, employees were required to turn over their keys

and other means of accessing district buildings.

“Ultimately it comes down to things that are matters of personnel, things that I’m not allowed to tell you about,” he said.

Moeller spent two years as an assistant superintendent and three years as DeKalb High School principal before he was hired as superintendent in 2013, with a four-year contract and a base salary of $190,000.

Solomon said Wednesday’s message was not necessarily a sign that Moeller was finished at District 428.

“We are not saying by this that there is a permanent replacement being sought, we are also not saying that it’s a temporary replacement being sought,” he said. “… It’s a qualified replacement for however much time, but there’s no indication included in this email that says anybody has been dismissed from a position.”

DeKalb County 911 service slowly restored Hours-long outage was the longest since system went live

eolson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Officials said they hoped to fully restore 911 service for DeKalb County by Wednesday evening after the longest system outage the county had seen since the system went live decades ago.

The 911 system outage began about 7 p.m. Tuesday, officials said.

By Wednesday afternoon, calls to the emergency number were being routed to all four local 911 call centers, which are operated by the city of DeKalb, Northern Illinois University, DeKalb County, and the city of Sandwich, said Glenna Johnson, DeKalb County 911 coordinator.

“We in DeKalb County have never experienced an outage like this until now,” Johnson said of the episode, in which the public was urged to have nonemergency numbers for police and fire agencies handy.

The 911 system outage also affected some customers in Boone, Stephenson and Ogle counties, said Christine Reap, spokeswoman for Frontier Communications, which provides the local 911 emergency system. The outage was caused by a hardware or software failure at Frontier’s switch in DeKalb, Reap said in a written statement.

Technicians from the company worked for several hours trying to pinpoint the exact cause of the problem, officials said.

On Tuesday night, calls to 911 resulted in a busy signal. A workaround solution to the problem was implemented overnight, allowing

Phone customers pay for 911 serpeople who dialed 911 to connect to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s dispatch center. Dispatchers there then transferred the call to the appropriate agency, DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said.

However, there was only one line dedicated to handling 911 calls, so it still was possible for callers to receive a busy signal.

to take calls from people in need of help, but did not have access to the amount of information that the 911 system generally provides, such as their physical location, phone number, and who was calling.

“We don’t have all the information that we normally have, so when they call they will be getting a 911 center, we will be asking them questions,” Johnson said. “ … They just need to be prepared to say, ‘I’m calling from such-and-such location,’ the physical

A 10-member E-911 board, whose members are appointed by the DeKalb County Board, oversees the local system. Johnson is the only employee.

Revenue for the 911 board in 2015 was $828,744, Johnson said. The funds help to provide equipment for 911 centers in the county, although the amount is not enough to cover all the costs, she said.

SYCAMORE – Turns out that a Morris-based company missed checking a box on its application for a special-use permit to open a propane distribution facility, so instead of the full DeKalb County Board taking a vote on the matter Wednesday the issue was referred back to planning and zoning for a new public hearing.

“If we didn’t do something we were supposed to do, then we’re all for another hearing,” said Ron Dibble, principal of Dibble Family LLC. The company is asking fort a special-use permit to allow a propane distribution facility at 25330 Five Points Road on agricultural land in unincorporated Mayfield Township, about a mile from Sycamore and 2 miles from DeKalb, according to county documents.

The full board was scheduled to vote on the request at its monthly meeting Wednesday. A residents group that has been outspoken in its opposition of the

Dibble request pointed out to county officials the missing information on the application, officials said.

They’re fear is that should the propane facility catch fire, their homes and other nearby property – including public schools – could be affected.

“We really kind of rallied together and said, ‘You know what, he really hasn’t completed his application,’ “ Thrower said. “The burden of proof is on him to show that (the facility is) not going to impact our homes, impact our property values. And that hasn’t been proven.”

She said the group established a legal fund, retained a lawyer and is prepared to take the issue to court.

It is expected that the new public forum will be held sometime in October,

and the matter would likely come back before the full board in November, board member Tracy Jones, R-District 1, said.

Board members called for the next public hearing to be held at night, to allow for more participation, instead of during the day as was the one held in August. The county’s interim head of planning and zoning said how long it takes to reschedule and hold the public hearing, and what time it takes place is up to the hearing officer the county would have to employ.

Dibble said he’s “not sure” if he will continue with his request, after the

board’s move.

Jones said publicly that he supports the propane facility coming to the location requested. The facility would be in his district. His verbal support came even as he made the motion to refer the issue back for another public hearing.

“I still think that this that this is a good project” said Jones, a farmer who said he has an 18,000 gallon propane tank on his own property.

He added that he was acting in the best interest of his district when he made the motion.

“We could have said ‘yes’, we could have said ‘no’,” Jones said about the full County Board. “Sending it back to public hearing was the right think to do.”

Chicago to hire hundreds more officers

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Chicago’s police department will add 970 new positions over the next two years, its superintendent announced Wednesday, saying the move will help combat the dramatic increase in shootings and homicides that has left thousands injured and hundreds dead this year.

But Mayor Rahm Emanuel didn’t explain how the city, which is grappling with financial woes that threaten basic services, will pay for the hiring spree.

Superintendent Eddie Johnson said at a news conference that he asked for additional officers and Emanuel “delivered.” The plan, which will start in January, is to add 516 new officers, 92 field-training officers, 200 detectives, 112 sergeants and 50 lieutenants. The changes will increase the number of sworn officers from about 12,500 to about 13,500; Johnson said vacancies will be filled on top of the new hires.

“I’m confident that these added resources will make us better,” Johnson said. He also acknowledged CPD’s issues and said accountability is key.

Ill. gets $1.8M for low-income students taking AP tests

CHICAGO – Illinois will receive nearly $1.8 million to help low-income students take advanced placement tests.

The U.S. Department of Education announced today that it has awarded the grants as part of efforts to boost collegeand career-readiness for underserved students. The tests let students obtain college credit for high school courses, reducing the time and cost required to complete a postsecondary degree.

The grants are used to help the students pay for AP tests administered by the College Board, the International Baccalaureate Organization and Cambridge International Examinations. The grants are expected to be sufficient to cover all but $15 of the cost of each test taken by

Teachers union begins strike authorization vote

CHICAGO – Teachers in the nation’s third-largest school district are casting ballots on whether they support a strike.

Members of the Chicago Teachers Union began voting for a strike authorization Wednesday. Voting lasts through Friday. Union officials said the results won’t be available right away.

The union needs 75 percent support, which is expected. A similar vote in December garnered support from about 88 percent of the voting members. Union members said the second vote offers legal cover.

If the union goes on strike, they have to give the district 10 days of notice. The earliest a walkout could take place is mid-October.

Work on bridge to resume after bats force delay

VINCENNES, Ind. – A project to restore a historic southwestern Indiana bridge will resume in October after a months-long delay caused by the discovery that endangered bats use the span as a roosting site.

The $3.2 million upgrade of the Lincoln Memorial Bridge that links Vincennes and Westport, Illinois, over the Wabash River was supposed to begin in March.

But crews found that the federal endangered Indiana bat uses the bridge as a roosting site and federal rules restrict work that could potentially disturb the bats between April 1 and Oct. 1.

A contractor will now begin work in October for the expected six-month project that includes cleaning, paving and repairing the bridge’s facade.

New polling place sought for contaminated complex

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. – Lake County election officials are searching for a new polling place where residents of a lead-contaminated public housing complex can vote this fall.

County Elections Director Michelle Fajman said Tuesday that precinct committeemen are expected to meet soon to suggest an alternate polling place to replace the one used last spring in the recreation center of the West Calumet Housing Complex in East Chicago.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has released data showing the soil at the complex is highly contaminated with lead and arsenic, and the city has decided to demolish the complex.

The (Northwest Indiana) Times reported Fajman said a recent mailing to registered voters in the complex are being returned because they’ve already relocated and left no forwarding addresses.

As separate cases wind through federal courts in New Jersey and New York, prosecutors are sure to reveal more about the bombings that injured 31 people and the evidence that led to Rahami’s capture early Monday morning after a shootout with police. A courtroom airing of those allegations is likely to conjure memories of the attempted Times Square bombing in 2010 and the Boston explosion three years later – unusual incidents in which a defendant was captured alive after an attack was attempted or carried out.

This latest prosecution is in keeping with the Justice Department’s commitment to use America’s civilian court system for terrorism cases.

Although the Obama administration – facing stiff opposition – abandoned its 2009 plan to transfer some Guantanamo Bay detainees to Manhattan federal court for trial, the Justice Department has since cited a series of a high-profile successes – including one in New York against the son-in-law of Osama bin Laden – as proof that the U.S. criminal justice system can secure swift convictions and harsh punishment against terrorism defendants.

The military tribunal system, meanwhile, has been snarled by delay.

“All of the concerns that have been raised, I think, are belied by the record.”

There have been political calls, including from Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, to treat terror suspects like Rahami as enemy combatants, which would deny them certain constitutional rights.

But there’s extremely limited and unsettled precedent for doing that when a defendant is captured on U.S. soil.

One 2002 instance involved Jose Padilla, who was first held as an enemy combatant before being prosecuted and convicted in federal court.

The Obama administration has time and again expressed its support for the civilian criminal justice system.

“There are lots of different ways for the government to throw the book at Rahami in civilian court,” Vladeck said.

“Our post 9/11-criminal counterterrorism regime is not soft.”

Rahami has been hospitalized since his arrest in Linden, New Jersey. He had not spoken with investigators as of Tuesday evening.

ticular, have complained that warnings against self-incrimination interfere with intelligence gathering. But the Justice Department permits agents to question terror suspects and use their statements, without first advising them of their right to remain silent, when there’s an immediate concern for public safety.

Randall Jackson, a former federal prosecutor who worked on the case against the Times Square bomber and now is in private practice, said investigators are surely hoping Rahami will talk.

“It’s safe to say that in any investigation like this where you’re dealing with an apprehended suspect of this type, every effort will be made to obtain all the useful information you could possibly obtain from that person,” he said.

Although federal charges were lodged against Rahami Tuesday in criminal complaints in both New Jersey and New York, U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, the top federal prosecutor in Manhattan, said Wednesday his office had already arranged for U.S. marshals to bring Rahami to New York for trial.

“We have a good track record of getting it done properly,” Bharara said.

Shooting triggers unrest in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Authorities tried to quell public anger and correct what they characterized as false information Wednesday after a night of looting and arson added Charlotte to the list of U.S. cities that have erupted in violence over the death of a black man at the hands of police.

With officials refusing to release any video of the shooting of 43-year-old Keith Lamont Scott, two starkly different versions emerged: Police said Scott disregarded repeated demands to drop his gun, while neighborhood residents said he was holding a book, not a weapon, as he waited for his son to get off the school bus.

The killing inflamed racial tensions in a city that seemed to have steered clear of the troubles that engulfed other places.

As Charlotte’s white mayor and black police chief stood at City Hall and appealed for calm, African-American leaders who said they were speaking for Scott’s family held their own news conference near where he was killed Tuesday, reminding the crowd of other shootings and abuses of black men.

The violence broke out shortly after a woman who appeared to be Scott’s daughter posted a profanity-laced, hourlong video on Facebook, saying her father had an unspecified disability and was unarmed. In the footage, she is at the cordoned-off shooting scene, yelling at officers.

“My daddy is dead!” the woman screams on the video, which has not been authenticated by The Associated Press.

On Wednesday morning, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney said: “It’s time to change the narrative, because I can tell you from the facts that the story’s a little bit different as to how it’s been portrayed so far, especially through social media.”

The police chief said officers were serving arrest warrants on another person when they saw Scott get out of a vehicle with a handgun. A black plainclothes officer in a vest emblazoned “Police” shot Scott after the officer and other uniformed members of the force made “loud, clear” demands that he drop the gun, the chief said.

UNITED NATIONS – World leaders from Pakistan to Ukraine unleashed their regional grievances Wednesday, taking the stage of the U.N. General Assembly to rage against their neighbors and presenting a picture of a chaotic world consumed by intractable conflicts.

A few paces from the General Assembly hall, the U.S. and Russia bitterly attacked each other during a Security Council meeting meant to salvage Syria’s faltering cease-fire.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon implored Syria’s warring parties to lay down their arms.

In the midst of the anger, a few bright spots emerged on the second day of the annual U.N. gathering of heads of states. Colombia basked in world praise when it presented its newly reached peace agreement with leftist rebels to the Security Council.

Former political prisoner Aung San Suu Kyi made her first General Assembly speech since she formed a democratically elected government in Myanmar.

But on the International Day of Peace, tensions from all parts of the

to North Korea, which earlier this month conducted its fifth nuclear test in defiance of repeated Security Council resolutions intended to constrain its weapons development.

Abe said North Korea this year fired three missiles into Japan’s exclusive economic zone and it was a matter of luck that no ships or aircraft were damaged. He urged unity in the Security Council to confront the North Korean threat.

“We must concentrate our strengths and thwart North Korea’s plans,” Abe said.

Some of the angriest words came from the rivalries between Pakistan, Afghanistan and India.

Sharif demanded a U.N. investigation against “brutalities perpetrated by the Indian occupying forces,” saying “innocent Kashmiri children, women and men” have been killed, blinded and injured.

Moments earlier, Pakistan came under attack from Afghanistan.

An expense worth bearing The cost of public trust and officer safety cannot be overpriced.

Reviewing and then storing high-definition data from police body cameras will be an added expense to Illinois municipalities and counties, but it should lessen over time as camera competition increases and more companies offer storage options.

It’s hard to overstate the need for the videos.

“It could provide an opportunity to validate what police are saying. A lot of cases may get resolved minus a trial,” DeWitt County State’s Attorney Jason Chambers recently said.

For cities and counties, the shift to video cameras can be a reliable way for police to improve trust and accountability with the public, and to reduce the number of injuries and unfounded complaints against officers.

After seeing how cameras affected two cases, “Every question I’d had about body cameras was completely erased,” said DeWitt County Sheriff Jered Shofner, whose department was one of the first in the area to deploy the cameras.

The Associated Press reported that at least two states have shelved body camera use because storage laws mean increased costs. The news service said at least eight states – Indiana, Oregon, Illinois, Nevada, California, New Hampshire, Nebraska and Georgia – have laws spelling out how long police departments must preserve the footage the cameras capture.

Just as it does on a smartphone or tablet, high-resolution video from a body camera uses a lot of space. Officers, supervisors and attorneys also will have to spend time reviewing footage to determine what needs to be saved or what needs to be included as part of an official report.

Exterior security cameras are commonplace at businesses, parking lots, stoplights and along highways. The footage can be used to catch car thieves, people who speed through construction zones or which car ran a red light. Footage has been used in criminal cases ranging from the Boston Marathon bombing to the pending local murder case against Kirk Zimmerman.

Body cameras are no different. They can show the good, and bad, of what happens during a police call. Used correctly, the cameras provide an objective view: a recent snippet from a Chicago Police Department body camera ultimately led to the suspension of five officers. Other footage in other cases provided footage that justified an officer’s actions.

Yes, new technology can be expensive. But using new technology to improve public safety, and to hold people accountable, is a cost we can bear.

For everyone’s sake, body cameras are an expense that will pay off.

Birther charade went on far too long That’s a lie – and Trump knows it.

The claim that Clinton or her campaign was responsible in 2008 for the rise of the so-called “birther movement” has long since been debunked, and no credible person subscribes to that specious yarn.

And it is equally true that no serious person hangs onto the false belief that Obama was born anywhere other than Hawaii in August of 1961.

Thus it’s clear that Trump is hanging onto the Clinton claim for one reason and one reason only: Political advantage.

In the past week, Clinton’s lead in national polls has evaporated and some voter canvasses now show Trump either running even with,

or ahead of, Clinton in key battleground states such as Ohio and Florida.

Clinton was sharply criticized last week for inartfully saying that half of Trump’s supporters belonged in a “basket of deplorables,” because they were racist, xenophobic homophobic, or worse.

Clinton has said she regrets her remarks.

It’s incontestable that Trump’s rise has been partially fueled by the angriest and most nativist elements of the American far-right.

It’s in that shadowy and fetid netherworld, given voice by Breitbart News (whose former executive, Steve Bannon, Trump now employs) that frankly racist speculation about

Obama’s parentage, citizenship and religious beliefs rose and flourished.

Thus, there is zero incentive for Trump, who has profited by playing into his supporters’ worst fears about Muslims, immigrants and others, to stop blowing that particular dog whistle by falsely blaming Clinton for starting such hateful rumors.

We would remind Trump that he is running for president of the entire United States – not that just that aging, largely white population that makes up the broadest part of his base.

So, Mr. Trump, if you would presume to lead an entire nation, drop this unseemly charade.

Trump frees Republicans from rigid litmus tests Over the span of two days, the Republican nominee for president has proposed new child care subsidies, new mandatory benefits to be provided by business, the removal of millions of families from the income-tax rolls, and an increase in tax rates on single people making from $112,500 to $190,000 a year.

Oh, and he put in a good word for Medicaid, too, leaving the impression with many people that he favors expanding it.

Trump’s Republican critics said that these announcements prove what they have been saying all along: that he is no conservative.

None of the Republicans he beat in the primaries would have pursued these initiatives. But the difference between Trump and other Republicans isn’t just that he has different views. It’s also that he has less fear.

In recent years, Republican politicians have tended to keep heterodox thoughts about policy to private

VIEWS Ramesh Ponnuru conversations, or not voiced them at all. They thought that they needed to stay within tightly drawn lines to avoid conservative criticism – criticism that could cost them primaries, or depress Republican turnout in general elections.

And those lines kept getting narrower. Propose a replacement for Obamacare that sought to keep millions of people from losing coverage, and you’d meet the accusation of favoring “Obamacare lite.” Some Republicans thought that they could achieve perfect conservative reputations by proposing to put everyone, no matter how poor, on the tax rolls.

Republicans who proposed ideas that did not fit within these lines did so very carefully. As did

Trump, Marco Rubio came out with a tax plan that cut taxes in general, helped parents and raised tax rates on some affluent single people. But some conservatives criticized the plan, and he dropped the increased tax rates.

Trump has proved that those fears were overstated or, at least, that they do not apply to him. None of these positions seem to be costing him any of his supporters, just as his opposition to entitlement reform and free trade did not keep him from winning the Republican nomination.

Trump even managed to wriggle out of his own previous position that all illegal immigrants had to be deported: He gave a speech that implied that a lot of them would be able to stay in the country under his administration, and even that they might one day get legal status.

When past Republicans have spoken similarly, they have been accused of supporting “amnesty” – sometimes

by Trump himself.

On many issues, Trump has maintained the party line. He became an opponent of abortion and same-sex marriage before running for the Republican nomination; he said he will repeal Obamacare and oppose general tax increases. But he has exercised more freedom than Republican politicians dreamed they had. For years, they have been complaining that purists had imposed a series of litmus tests that kept their party from winning elections or governing well.

For good or ill, and probably some of both, that stranglehold now appears to be broken.

Congratulations.

But the Republican nominee, while apparently ending his repugnant practice of casting doubt on the 44th President’s citizenship, nonetheless managed to falsely blame Democrat Hillary Clinton for stoking the controversy in the first place.

“Hillary Clinton and her campaign of 2008 started the birther controversy. I finished it. I finished it, you know what I mean,” Trump said Friday. “President Barack Obama was born in the United States. Period.”

Not only have the Huskies won three consecutive matches, but they finally are back home after three weeks of traveling across the country and look to defend their Mid-American Conference West crown when they play host to Western Michigan at 6 p.m. today at Victor E. Court in the conference opener.

The Huskies (8-4) are coming off a perfect weekend at the GW Invitational in Washington, D.C., sweeping James Madison and Tennessee and beating George Washington in four sets. The trip to the nation’s capital came after a road-trip to Fargo, North Dakota, and a long plane ride to Hawaii for invitationals in back-to-back weeks.

“Every weekend had different story lines,” NIU coach Ray Gooden said.

“I think each of those trips forced us to be OK with each other. Driving 10 hours to Fargo, I think the team did a good job handling it together. Going to Hawaii was a memorable experience. ... it was good to see what some of the best teams in the country looked like.

On the last trip, usually teams don’t fare well coming back from Hawaii as well. We talked about it, but tried not to make it a thing.”

In all, the Huskies traveled 11,084 miles in the three weekends.

In back-to-back weeks, the team was able to visit the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor and take a tour of the 9/11 Pentagon Memorial, which Gooden called humbling experiences.

“We had consecutive weeks learning about two of the more poignant moments in America history,” he said.

“That’s pretty amazing.”

In terms of the action on the court, two of the Huskies’ four losses on the season – No. 14 Hawaii and No. 6 Washington – came against top 15 teams in the nation at the tournament in Honolulu.

“We had a really tough weekend in Hawaii, we played some really, really good teams,” NIU senior Mary Grace Kelly said. “Unfortunately, we didn’t get the results we wanted, but playing competition at a high level consistently and having to play with that really

Last season, the Huskies finished 19-11 overall and 14-2 in the MAC, which earned them the conference’s regularseason champion and allows them to host the MAC tournament this season.

CHICAGO – The question isn’t whether Orioles outfielder Adam Jones was right or wrong when he said it’s harder for black players in his sport to speak their minds or protest social injustices because “baseball is a white man’s sport.”

“Of course he’s right,” said Jake Arrieta, the Cubs righthander and a former Orioles teammate of Jones.

Look no further for proof than this week’s report that Joe Ricketts, patriarch of the Jason Heyward Cubs’ family ownership group, has pledged at least $1 million to support Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, who on Wednesday proposed a nationwide stop-andfrisk policy in “the black community” to combat violence.

The bigger questions raised by Jones involve how the sport of Jackie Robinson went from a paragon of social change in America to an institution in which its culture has effectively silenced social dissent.

49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick sparked a national discussion about racial injustice, including continued police shootings of unarmed black Americans, by taking a knee during the national anthem. It set off a wave of similar peaceful protests by NFL players during the anthem.

In baseball, Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia called it “awkward” for any of the sport’s relatively few black players to do anything like that.

During the ESPY Awards show in July, Bulls star and Chicago native Dwyane Wade stood alongside three other NBA greats and spoke out against racial divides and violence in the country.

In baseball, Chicago native and Mets outfielder Curtis Granderson was among those in his clubhouse who declined to discuss Jones’ comments last week with media.

“Is it tougher?” Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward said. “There are less of us. There are less black people in baseball. So there’s naturally going to be fear in that. There’s naturally going to be a fear in minorities when everybody has a different route to get there.”

Heyward might be in the strongest position of any black player in the game to take a stand on anything he chooses, given his tenure, his contract, the national stage his team provides and the proximity in Chicago to some of the core issues Kaepernick and others raise.

“Understood,” said the most pursued hitter in the free-agent market last offseason whose eight-year, $184 million contract runs through 2023.

Only the Marlins’ Giancarlo Stanton (2027) is signed longer. “But I’m a different person. I have a different personality. I may have a different approach to things.

“Just with what A.J.’s saying, that’s what I think it is: You don’t want to give anybody any extra reason to take something away from you that you worked hard for, and that’s why so many people are not going to protest in this sport or [certain] other jobs.”

Heyward, who supports the peaceful efforts of Kaepernick and others to raise the dialogue on important issues, is no stranger to the effort. He has been part of town-hall-style forums during his career, and he and teammate Dexter Fowler are active in their commu-

nity back home in the Atlanta area.

“There’s a lot of moving parts to it, like every issue or problem,” Heyward said. “To Adam’s point, you have to be careful in your position. This is about how we were raised. You have to understand that there’s not that many people like yourself in this position.

“And will you be judged fairly or not? You just can’t leave it to question.

You can’t give people an extra reason.

That’s the reality of the culture and how your culture’s been treated for a long time. You just need to be careful.”

Heyward spoke at length Tuesday, the day after Terrence Crutcher, a 40-year-old unarmed man whose car had broken down, was fatally shot by police in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as he held his hands up.

Even as he spoke, another police shooting in Charlotte, North Carolina, sparked protests and violence in that city that continued into Wednesday night.

But as long as the faces and voices of black America remain disproportionately low in baseball, the platform for baseball as a major-league force for debate likely will remain muted.

“It’s not by any means to say you ignore it, but you just choose other tactics,” Heyward said. “You’ve just got to play the game the right way, whether it’s sport or life.”

Not spelled out is the different reality of being black in America as much as the reality of baseball’s dominant-white culture.

Heyward grew up in the suburbs.

His parents are Dartmouth graduates.

He was a good student, and he and his brother Jacob (a draft pick of the Giants this year) were prominent baseball players in their community.

And yet it’s ludicrous to even ask: Has he ever been hassled by a cop or profiled?

“I’m from Georgia, and I’m black,” he said. “Yeah.”

Is the platform of big-league sports the best place to stage discussions on such issues? Is there such a thing as a wrong place to do it?

Whatever those debates might reveal, the fact remains MLB was a leader in American social discourse during the past century. It lags far behind its rival sports in this century.

“In history, some of the greatest people, whatever their ethnicity, they’re the ones that weren’t afraid to speak up,” Heyward said. “They’re the ones that weren’t afraid to be wrong. A.J. wasn’t afraid to be wrong.”

LAKE FOREST – It’s a week for the backups at Halas Hall because of Monday night’s slew of Bears injuries.

Quarterback Jay Cutler, nose tackle Eddie Goldman and middle linebacker Danny Trevathan highlighted the group of players who did not practice Wednesday, and that trio will be on the “DNP” list for some time. Running back Ka’Deem Carey, safety Adrian Amos, cornerback Bryce Callahan and safety Chris Prosinski also sat out.

Some of those players have the logical “next man up,” ready-to-step-in mentality, but replacing Trevathan isn’t so simple. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said it could be Jonathan Anderson, Christian Jones or Nick Kwiatkoski who will get the nod to play next to Jerrell Freeman.

An undrafted rookie last season, Anderson stepped in and made some plays in the Bears’ nickel defense with 34 tackles and two passes defensed. He subbed in for Trevathan for two snaps Monday.

“He’s a pretty good athlete, as linebackers go,” Fangio said of Anderson.

“He’s got some safety experience in college. We’ve moved him up because of his size. And he’s done a nice job developing.”

Jones played inside linebacker last season, where he led the team in tackles, then moved to outside linebacker in the spring, but could be back inside Sunday against Dallas. “[Jones] has some experience now at inside backer after playing all those snaps last year,” Fangio said. “He has some ability to cover. His length is an advantage inside, too.”

Kwiatkoski didn’t play until the preseason finale, where he left a positive impression on Fangio with his showing against the Browns, but the fourth-round pick has been inactive the first two games.

Last season, when the Bears moved inside linebackers around, they’d have a rotation based on the base and nickel defense. They haven’t had to do that with players of the caliber of Trevathan and Freeman, but it’s possible we see one player next to Freeman for the passing downs and a downhill thumper for the run downs.

Ace, Cy Young candidate’s ERA rises to 3.23

After going from second in the AL in ERA behind Masahiro Tanaka (2.97) to eighth behind Rick Porcello, Corey Kluber, Aaron Sanchez, Danny Duffy and Justin Verlander, he’ll have one or two starts left to whittle it down again. Sale did reach a career high for innings pitched in a season (2142/3), and it’s possible he’s beginning to tire on a recent heavy workload he has welcomed.

“It could be,” manager Robin Ventura said. “I don’t think that goes with the command part of it (which eluded Sale, Ventura said), but it could be with a little velocity.”

“No. Just [stunk],” Sale said. “Everyone is entitled to have a bad night, and tonight was mine, unfortunately. I was just God-awful tonight.”

Before the game, Ventura said Sale, whom one oddsmaker on Wednesday listed him as a slight favorite over Kluber to win the Cy Young, belonged “at the top of the Cy Young.”

“I’m partial because I see him all the time,” Ventura said. “I see what he does. Regardless of where we’re at record-wise, I realize how important

he is.”

But Sale, as usual, steered clear of Cy Young discussion.

“I don’t play for stuff like that,” he said. “I’m here to win games. Not to win any trophies or whatever else. I want to win games, and I wanted to win tonight.”

Sale, like Abreu, has grown weary of playing for a losing team year in and year out. Given a chance to weigh in on Jose Abreu’s comments Monday after an 8-3 loss to the Royals in Kansas City – Abreu said the Royals have more desire than the Sox – Sale said, “I’m going to keep it to what happened tonight on the field. Bad night. Frustrating. Wish I could have been better. I wasn’t. It would have been nice to sneak out of [Philadelphia] with a win (in the two-game set), but I didn’t give them a chance from the first pitch.”

Sale could make two more starts, including the last game of the season Oct. 2 against the Twins at home.

“Yeah, whatever they got for me,” he said. “I go when my name is called.

However many that is I’ll show up for them.”

Frazier: ‘We’re all frustrated’

PHILADELPHIA – Toms River, New Jersey, where Todd Frazier was a Little League World Series hero, is 60 miles from here and there is an off day on the White Sox schedule today.

But Frazier was taking the team charter to Cleveland on Wednesday night, even though all that’s left in a disappointing season after Wednesday’s game against the Phillies was three games on the road and seven at home.

Todd Frazier “I’m not staying at home (in New Jersey) tomorrow because I want to stick with the team and finish strong with the team,” Frazier said. “In these last games, let’s keep that mindset going of you have to battle. I want to get my numbers up, yes.

And I want to win games.”

Although disappointed with his career-low .221 batting average and runners he left in scoring position, Frazier needs two homers and five RBIs to record a 40/100 homer/RBI season.

That would be a nice feather in his cap – it’s been done 10 times in Sox history, including five times by Frank

Thomas – but above that, “I want to win,” Frazier said.

“Like (manager) Robin (Ventura) said the other day, ‘Play for the day.’

That’s what all of us are doing. Let’s add some positives to the end of the year, rest up for a month and then hit the weights.

“At the end of the day, all you have is your team and ‘What have you done lately?’ My high school coach, Ken Frank, had it on his desk, ‘What have you done for me lately?’ It’s true.”

Frazier was touching on the subject of desire, one that Jose Abreu brought up Sunday after yet another loss to the Royals. Abreu said the Royals had more desire to win than the Sox. “The bottom line is, everybody on this team has the desire to win and everybody has the desire to do as much work as they can to be the best professional baseball player they can be and represent the White Sox,” Frazier said.

“I wasn’t there when the question was asked, but I think we’re all frustrated. We all understand we shouldn’t be in this situation (72-80 and in fourth place in the AL Central),” Frazier said.

“If we all look back at this year we’re going to say it’s a disappointing year.

And if it is, then you didn’t really give it your all.”

PHILADELPHIA – Even Chris Sale is susceptible to a dud, although the White Sox ace left-hander has had fewer than most during his five All-Star seasons as a starting pitcher.

Sale’s four-inning outing in the Phillies’ 8-3 victory Wednesday night – his second shortest of the season – followed six starts in a row of eight innings or more and could not have come at a worse time as he makes a final push for his first Cy Young Award after finishing in the top six in voting the past four seasons.

Sale, who could boast the best five-season résumé of any American League Cy Young candidate, had his 2016 ledger dinged with six runs al-

lowed on seven hits. Included in the barrage by the Phillies, who have the worst offense in baseball, was a tworun double by Cameron Rupp in the first, a home run by Tommy Joseph in the Phillies’ three-run third and an RBI triple by Cesar Hernandez in the fourth, on which Sale failed to back up third.

“Bad night all the way around,” said a Sale, who, speaking an hour and a half after his night was over, hadn’t cooled down after what was the Sox’s Chris Sale fifth straight loss on a 1-5 road trip. “Gave up too many runs.

Got hit around, left the ball over the plate and … stunk.”

Sale struck out five and did not walk a batter, but he also hit three batters. For support, the Sox produced three homers, but all were solo shots.

Panarin looking ahead, not back on rookie year Forward has become a ‘huge’ star back home in Russia

mlazerus@suntimes.com TORONTO – Turns out, Artemi Panarin at age 6 was a lot like Artemi Panarin at age 24.

“Always a smile on the face,” said former schoolmate, linemate, and World Cup teammate Evgeny Dadonov. “Always. Since he was a little kid.”

It wasn’t just the happy-go-lucky attitude, that goofy charm that so enraptured Chicago in his first year with the Blackhawks. Back then, as now, Panarin was a little smaller, a little faster and a little better than just about everyone else.

And now everyone knows it. After his re- Artemi Panarin markable first NHL season, in which he had 30 goals and 47 assists, helped Patrick Kane to the best season of his career, and won the Calder Trophy as the league’s top rookie, Panarin now is among the world’s elite. And Dadonov, who’s been there since the beginning, isn’t surprised.

“I knew he could play in the NHL, for sure,” said Dadonov, who was Panarin’s KHL linemate in St. Petersburg, Russia, after playing 55 NHL games in three seasons with the Florida Panthers. “He’s a great player – good skill, good speed.

He’s always been small, a tiny guy. Maybe that’s why NHL teams didn’t see him as a [great] player earlier. But I knew he was strong enough to play [in the NHL].

I’m probably [just] a little surprised he started to play so well so fast. I thought he needed time – to learn the language, the country, a different style of life. But he got through it pretty quickly.”

So what does Panarin do for an encore? Will there be a sophomore slump, or can he get even better? After unplugging for four months at home in Russia, Panarin – who said he lost his phone and basically was out of contact with Kane and Chicago all summer – is trying to look forward, not back.

“I already forgot last season,” Panarin said through an interpreter (his English has come quite a long way in one year, but he’s still more comfortable doing interviews in his native tongue).

I’m moving forward and have new goals and new challenges ahead. I’m just getting ready for a good, fresh start.”

Last season, Panarin missed most of training camp with an injury and was an unknown commodity heading into the regular season. This year, he’s jumping right into high-level action, too, with Russia in the World Cup of Hockey. He’s been mostly in a bottom-six role for the high-powered Russians, and has one shot and one assist in two games heading into today’s must-win game against Finland. But Panarin thinks the high level of play – Niklas Hjalmarsson justifiably deemed it “the most competitive tournament in the world,” thanks to the two super-teams of Europe and North America – will benefit him when the puck drops Oct. 12 at the United Center.

“It’s a great experience for me, and I feel I’ll be ready,” Panarin said. “It seems that the NHL level could be a little bit weaker, but this is a great experience to play with the best players in the world. I’ll be well-prepared.”

Panarin will turn 25 on Oct. 30, so although he’s entering only his second NHL season, he’s also entering his prime. And with the Hawks thinner than ever up front, with several prospects likely to be thrust into major roles, they’re going to rely even more heavily on Panarin and Kane. And that’s saying something, given how often the Hawks looked like a one-line team last season.

He also will be playing for a contract.

Panarin is a restricted free agent this summer, and the cap-strapped Hawks have had only preliminary talks about an extension. But both sides are optimistic that he will be in Chicago for the long term. He’s too good of a player, and Chicago’s too good of a fit.

As Panarin’s star has risen in Chicago, it also has risen at home. Already a fan favorite after putting up 62 points in 54 games and leading SKA St. Petersburg to the Gagarin Cup, Panarin came back to Russia a household name.

As Dadonov put it, although the KHL is the second-best league in the world, not every star player in Russia manages to become a star player in North America. Plenty have, but plenty have flamed out, failing to even make a team.

So those who make it in the NHL tend to become even more beloved back home.

“He was already a star, but now he’s even bigger,” Dadonov said. “Huge.”

Those closest to him say his breakout season hasn’t changed him, though.

He’s still kind of small, he’s still really good, and he’s still always smiling.

“He’s the same person he was in Russia,” said Hawks linemate and mentor Artem Anisimov. “And he’s the same person as last year. He doesn’t change.”

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. – Adrian Peterson will have surgery on his right knee to repair a torn meniscus, putting his season and perhaps his 10year run with Minnesota in question.

The Vikings have held off for now on placing the franchise’s all-time leading rusher on injured reserve, however, waiting for the medical report that will influence that Adrian decision. of three to four months. But Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said the timetable for Peterson’s return won’t be clear until after the procedure.

“Everything is possible,” Zimmer said. “It could be season ending. It could be three weeks, four weeks. I don’t know.”

Peterson made a swift recovery from a torn ACL in his left knee suffered in the second-to-last game of the 2011 season. He came back with a flourish, in time for the 2012 opener, and won the league MVP award with 2,097 yards rushing while leading the Vikings to the playoffs.

Peterson won another NFL rushing title last year, but he’s 31 now with a contract that might not make financial sense in its current state for the Vikings to carry next year. The scheduled salary cap hit for 2017 is $18 million, so even if he were fully healthy this season, his status was bound to reach a crossroad. The Vikings could try to bring him back at a reduced rate with a restructuring, but he might prefer to be released and test the market for the first time in his career.

TORONTO – Less than 20 hours after a gut-wrenching 1-0 loss to rival Canada in the Olympic semifinals in Sochi, the United States had to summon the will and the desire to play for a bronze medal against Finland.

They didn’t. They barely showed up at all in a dismal 5-0 loss to the Finns, who came out with pride and purpose.

Now that they’ve been eliminated from the World Cup of Hockey, the Americans are insisting there won’t be a repeat performance tonight against the Czech Republic (also 0-2 and eliminated) in the group-stage Patrick Kane finale “You’re putting the USA sweater on, and we haven’t won a game in this tournament,” said Patrick Kane, one of a handful of Americans who seemed to actually care during that bronze-medal game. “We’ve got to prove to ourselves we can win a game here, and we saw what happened last time in the 2014 Olympics. ... Even though we’re not really playing for anything, we’re not going to let that mistake happen twice.”

Zach Parise said that poor effort is something Team USA still feels badly about.

“All of us probably really regretted what happened that game,” Parise said. “You ask yourself, ‘Could we have played harder with the bronze medal on the line?’ Even with the disappointment of the night before. It’s a learning thing. I know nothing’s on the line tomorrow, but you still play with a lot of pride. We’ll come and play hard just like there is a spot on the line to get in.”

Social smackdown: Phil Kessel, a fivetime 30-goal scorer and a postseason hero this past spring, lit the internet up with a snarky tweet about being left off the Team USA roster. Future shock: Rumors of the demise of American hockey were greatly exaggerated, based on Team North America’s exhilarating run through the group stage. The 23-and-under team knocked off Sweden, 4-3, on Nathan MacKinnon’s goal in a breathless overtime period. With Americans such as Auston Matthews, Johnny Gaudreau, Jack Eichel, Shayne Gostisbehere and Brandon Saad, the future of American hockey looks bright. Imagine what Team USA could have done with those guys in this tournament.

North America raced out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, outshooting mighty Sweden, 11-1, at the start.

“I don’t know how many breakaways they had, it was a little embarrassing, the first 10 minutes,” Sweden’s Niklas Hjalmarsson said. “I felt pretty old out there, the first 10 minutes.”

North America needs Finland to beat Russia today to advance. Sweden locked up a spot with the overtime loss.

As the Crow flies: With Canada having clinched a spot in the semifinals and playing on back-to-back nights, coach Mike Babcock gave Corey Crawford the start over Carey Price. he fall TV schedule includes “The Exorcist” and “Lethal Weapon,” but reboots aren’t the only source of nostalgia in the lineup. There are a number of actors returning to primetime this season and some of their roles may surprise you.

We’ve compiled a list that we’ll continue to update – let us know if you spot someone we missed.

Kiefer Sutherland

Sutherland has been focusing on his budding country music career lately, but he’s especially well-known for his role as Jack Bauer in Fox’s spy thriller “24.” Sutherland is an executive producer on Fox’s upcoming spinoff “24: Legacy,” slated to premiere after the Super Bowl.

More Content Now Andy Samberg seems to be everywhere you look (and listen) these days. He’s starring in and producing the hit show “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” he returns every once in a while to his old “SNL” stomping grounds, and he’s the lead voice in the new animated film “Storks,” playing Junior, the ambitious wannabe boss of a package delivery company. Samberg, 38, sat down recently to talk about “Storks” and the art of animation acting.

Q: How was Junior initially presented to you?

A: He’s a stork at Stork Mountain

who works at Cornerstore.com. He’s sort of a top gun stork deliverer of packages. He’s got his eyes on becoming boss, and the story finds him on the eve of fulfilling that goal. He’s told by his boss that the only thing he has to do is fire this girl who works there, and he thinks, “No problem!” But it proves to be much more difficult than he thought it would be.

Q: If I hadn’t seen your name in the opening credits, I probably wouldn’t have known it was you.

A: Well, thanks. That’s what you

always want; you always want it to be the character. You never want people in the theater thinking about who did it, trying to imagine the real person in the booth. You want to be immersed in the story, and taken away.

Q: You’ve done lots of voice work. Are there any particular things that you really like and really don’t like about it?

A: The thing I like the least about it is how little credit I get (laughs).

But what I like about it is not having to wear makeup, and how low of a commitment it is, time-wise, and still getting to be in a movie.

Q: Does it allow you to get to be a little bigger and crazier in your performance?

A: Well, I don’t rein it in too much

Q: Your first voice acting job was “Space Chimps,” close to a decade ago.

Has your approach to the craft changed much since then?

A: Oh, yeah. I didn’t know anything

about it when I made that movie. I was just on “SNL” and they asked me if I wanted to do it, and I said sure. I pretty much did the whole thing alone, in a tiny studio in Manhattan, and then the movie came out, and I thought, “OK, I guess that’s what it’s all about.” In the ones that I’ve done since then, the process was radically different. Working with (directors) Phil Lord and Chris Miller on the “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” movies was kind of similar to working with Nick, though I was alone actor-wise more often on those, and then on the “Hotel Transylvania” movies I did with Adam Sandler, we would try to be in the booth together as much as possible. But never to the extent of this one. And I think that speaks to the difference in the tone of “Storks” because there’s a looseness to the voice performances. When I watched it, just as a viewer, I felt there was a crackle to it that feels very real.

DAWC to host monthly music marathons DAILY CHRONICLE The DeKalb Area Women’s Center will begin a monthly all-ages event called Majakka Monthly Music Marathon. It will feature regional bands and Northern Illinois University student musicians and artists.

The first event will be from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday. Future shows will be hosted the second Friday of each month.

Acts already are booked for Oct. 14, Nov. 18 and Dec. 9.

State St. There’s also a free parking lot and street parking in the area.

There will be a $5 cover charge per person. All funds will go toward the DeKalb Area Women’s Center, a nonprofit organization. Performers will have their entry fee waived.

Historically, Majakka Hall has been a temperance hall, so alcohol will not be provided or allowed inside the premise.

In the spirit of Bryan’s contributions to the Fox Valley theater world, IVT will offer the annual Mimi Bryan Memorial IVT Scholarship in the amount of $250 to an area student beginning in May 2017.

Special consideration will be given to applicants who have participated in the fine arts area, especially IVT productions, and may be interested in receiving further education in that field. However, a fine arts major or minor is not required to qualify for the scholarship.

A scholarship review committee of the Indian Valley Theatre Board of

Directors will consider all complete applications submitted. The scholarship will be awarded to a graduating, college-bound senior from high schools in Sandwich and the surrounding community.

The review committee’s decision will be based on the following criteria: Applicant must be enrolled in an accredited two-year or fouryear college; applicant must have a “C” average or better upon graduation from his or her school district; applicant must attach two letters of recommendation from adults (excluding relatives; i.e. teachers, directors or theater members) detailing their special qualifications for this award;

applicant must submit a list of participation in and/or accomplishments in the fine arts or theater-related activities.

Applications must be submitted by March 31, and must include a short written personal response to several questions. A scholarship application will be available online on the IVT website shortly.

32 Neuropathy not always caused by diabetes Note to readers: This column originally ran in October 2013.

Dear Dr. K: I have peripheral neuropathy. I

know people with diabetes often get neuropathy, but I’m not diabetic. What else can cause this condition? And what can I do about it?

Dear Reader: Neuropathy is a medical term that means nerve damage. The type of nerve damage people with diabetes get involves specific nerve fibers in all nerves, particularly the nerves that travel to the legs and feet.

(There are other conditions in which a single nerve leading to the legs and feet is pinched, causing pain. An example is what is often called a “slipped disk” or “herniated disk” in the lower part of the spine.)

The symptoms of peripheral neuropathy include numbness and tingling. Some cases cause burning, shooting or stabbing pain.

When the doctor does a physical examination and touches your feet and lower legs with something as light as a feather (like some cotton), you may not feel it. However, you will feel it if the cotton touches your skin in the thigh or elsewhere on the body.

You also may lose sensation to a pinprick in the lower legs and feet, but not the rest of you.

Diabetes is the most common cause of peripheral neuropathy. But neuropathy can result from other causes as well. These include: • Excessive alcohol intake.

• Hypothyroidism. In this condition, the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone.

• Amyloidosis, a disease in which an abnormal protein accumulates in the body.

• Vitamin deficiencies, particularly vitamin B1, B12 and folate deficiency.

• Infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

• Critical illness, particularly if you develop a severe inflammatory response to infection.

• Chemotherapy cancer treatment.

Diagnosing peripheral neuropathy is best done by electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS). Such testing often is not necessary, as your symptoms, your medical history and your doctor’s physical examination make the diagnosis likely.

Treatment of peripheral neuropathy begins with treating the underlying cause of the condition. For example, let’s say your neuropathy is related to heavy drinking. You should severely restrict, or better yet abstain, from alcohol. If your neuropathy is caused by hypothyroidism, treatment with replacement doses of thyroid hormone should help.

The other goal of treatment is to relieve symptoms. In particular, treatment targets pain caused by peripheral neuropathy.

Several medications can help. Gabapentin, an anticonvulsant medication, usually is effective. Tricyclic antidepressants also can effectively relieve pain.

Finally, while neuropathy itself causes pain, it (strangely enough) reduces sensitivity to pain caused by outside injuries. This makes you particularly vulnerable to foot damage. If you develop a cut or sore on your foot, without pain to alert you, you might not even notice the injury. Untreated, a simple wound may become severely infected. To prevent this, carefully check your feet every day and treat any foot injury immediately.

Dear Abby: I DEAR ABBY have been happily married for 20 Jeanne years to an amazPhillips ing man, “Boyd.”

Eight months ago, he left his administrative job to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming an actor. He is working hard on auditions and shoots, and I am very proud of him. However, when he left his job, it felt to me like a pronouncement rather than the result of our usual mutual decisions.

Unfortunately, I communicated my frustration to family members at the time, and they have completely written Boyd off. They don’t want to talk to him or hear news about him, and he is not welcome in their homes.

Boyd didn’t take this well. He has, in return, written them off. It has reached the point I can’t share news about them with him. I have had to take down family photos – which was my choice – but it felt necessary.

The irony is my family felt he had created undue stress for me, but the breach in family harmony has been far more stressful than my husband’s career change. Any thoughts on how to bring detente to this situation? It’s keeping me up at night. – Actor’s Wife In Atlanta Dear Wife: Have you told your family by shunning your husband they have caused you more stress than his decision – however one-sided it might have been – to become an actor? If you haven’t you should, because it is causing discord in your marriage. Your relatives do not have the right to punish your husband for his career choice, and you should not have encouraged or allowed them to alienate him.

You might want to remind them you and Boyd are a unit, and if they care about more contact with you, they will bury the hatchet. Or perhaps you could convince everyone to agree to family counseling.

Dear Abby: My husband and I have been married for a very long time and have a good marriage. However, he has one annoying habit that drives me crazy. We live in a small house, and he has stacks and piles of things lying around collecting dust and creating clutter.

When I ask him to put them away, he says just to leave them where they are so he will remember to look at them “someday.” Abby, these are videos, magazines, books or paperwork. It could be anything, really, like some gadget he wants to check out.

A neat and tidy house is important to me.

This has been going on during our entire marriage. What can I say to him to get him to change his ways? – Anti-Clutter In Iowa Dear Anti-Clutter: Probably not much at this point. But I can offer this insight. The tendency to do what your husband is doing is a sign of OCD, an anxiety disorder. For your husband, letting go of things he “may” want to look at “sometime” can be emotionally upsetting. A doctor might be able to help your husband, but that would necessitate your husband admitting what he has been doing is causing a problem.

Then, with 18-19, if responder, as he does here, raises to three no-trump, opener nudges to four notrump to invite a slam. (Some pairs play that to rebid three no-trump indicates a 5-3-3-2 hand with 15-17 points that did not look right for a one-no-trump opening.)

South starts with six top tricks: two hearts (given trick one), two diamonds and two clubs. He can hope to get at least three winners from spades, but the defender with that ace will surely duck the first round of the suit. Then declarer will need two hand entries: one to knock out the spade ace and the other to cash the established winners. What are South’s two entries?

He has only the heart ace and diamond ace. So, to make the contract, South must not win the first trick.

Let’s assume East shifts to a diamond. Declarer wins on the board and leads the spade queen. When it holds, he crosses to the heart ace and drives out the spade ace, here ending with an overtrick.
