Your food stinks.

Don’t take it personally – my food stinks, too.

And I know people don’t want to smell it.

This is a thing I’ve grown somewhat particular about as I’ve continued to work in an office environment.

I’ve established a pretty solid rule for myself on the subject: Anything that goes in the microwave, anything hot, I eat in the office break room, which is set aside for cooking and eating.

Sometimes, I still eat cold things – say, a turkey sandwich, or a doughnut, or trail mix – at my desk.

I’d like to break myself of that habit, too, as it’s not really necessary, it gets crumbs on my workspace (which is messy enough as it is), and I don’t do anything all that productive while I’m eating, anyway.

Not everybody agrees with me. Actually, I guess most people don’t. A survey last year showed that only 1 in 5 American workers walks away from their desk for a lunch break every day.

I’ll bet those numbers are inflated some. People have a tendency to exaggerate how long and how hard they work. Still, lots of people make a habit of eating at their desks.

When you bring hot food into an environment that’s not a dining area, the smell practically jumps up people’s nostrils and lin-

What if one of your co-workers is on a diet, or is really hungry but not able to eat yet, or finds your selection of reheated fish or green peppers and onions foul-smelling?

Also, when you eat at your desk, chances are you throw your garbage away there, too. Most office wastebaskets don’t have lids, so the food smell remains. Too bad the ghost of Portillo’s past doesn’t take people back to great cheeseburgers of long ago.

I know, I know: Everybody’s too busy to take 20 minutes to eat lunch away from their desk.

So much to do and so little time.

But I’ll bet you don’t really get much work done while you eat, anyway.

Just take a break. We’ll all feel better.

Construction on schedule for DeKalb County Jail expansion

SYCAMORE – An expansion project to remedy overcrowding at the DeKalb County Jail is moving along right on schedule, Joyce Klein, the sheriff’s chief of corrections, said Tuesday.

Excavation of the expansion site was completed in June and July, and the installation of footings and basement walls began in August and will continue into October, Klein said.

Some rainy days in August have been the only factor to slow construction, setting workers back about a week, she said.

Klein said precast concrete panels for the walls are set to arrive and start going up at the end of October. Most of the walls are 12 feet wide, 45 feet tall and weigh 50,000 pounds.

Construction manager Jeremy Rolling said his crew members still are working on the concrete foundation, and they will be ready to erect steel and precast concrete for the walls within the next couple of months.

“Everything has been going according to plan,” Rolling said.

Klein said some preliminary plumbing work has begun as well, and four of the eight additional corrections deputies needed to staff the expanded jail already have been hired.

“We don’t want to open the facility with eight new people on at once,” Klein said. “We plan on hiring two more this year and two next year.”

She said the $35 million project has stayed within its budget so far, and a

According to DeKalb County’s proposed budget for fiscal 2017, the jail’s transition creates a “paradox” in that more staff members are needed to ensure a timely and safe opening, while budget cuts are being made throughout the county.

The county is using multiple revenue sources to finance the expansion, including increased revenue from tipping fees at Waste Management’s landfill near Cortland, rather than in-

creasing property taxes.

Klein said substantial completion is scheduled for January 2018, and final completion is expected in May or June 2018.

After final completion, jail administration will take some time to train staff members and conduct public tours, Klein said.

She said the expansion should be ready for inmates by August 2018.

Once completed, the expanded jail will have capacity for 163 beds, with immediate plans to use 133. The jail

opened in 1980 and was 46,481 square feet with the capacity for 64 inmates.

After overcrowding in the late 1980s, beds were added to increase capacity to 89, the jail’s current capacity. According to the DeKalb County Government website, the jail’s highest population was seen in 2012 when it averaged 136 inmates a day.

The addition should allow enough space to house the average of 30 to 50 inmates who are detained in other counties because of limited bed space at the DeKalb County Jail.

Jury trial underway in child sex assault case

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A jury was selected Tuesday to hear the trial of a local man accused of multiple counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.

Jeremiah P. Riggs, 37, of the 1100 block of Market Street, DeKalb, was arrested in December 2013 after being accused of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child. A month later, a grand jury returned a 15-count indictment

against Riggs that accused him of repeatedly raping the girl, who was 6 years old at the time of his arrest. Riggs and the girl are related, prosecutors previously told the Jeremiah Daily Chronicle. If conP. Riggs victed of a single count of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, Riggs could be sentenced to six to 30 years in prison. If convicted of all counts, he would face a

minimum sentence of 90 years.

DeKalb County Assistant State’s Attorneys Stephanie Klein and Alicia Caplan are prosecuting the case. DeKalb County Public Defender Tom McCulloch is representing Riggs.

When the jury selection resumed Tuesday afternoon after a lunch break, Riggs was seated at the defense table with a notepad and a copy of Stephen R. Covey’s book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.”

Before the trial began, McCulloch

tried to have statements Riggs made to police suppressed, along with other evidence. McCulloch had argued, among other things, that Riggs was under the influence of marijuana and a large amount of Xanax when he spoke to police. Those motions were denied.

Jury members were seated Tuesday, and opening statements were expected to begin today.

Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert is presiding over the trial, which is expected to continue through Thursday.

Modified contract is OK’d for District 428 director of HR

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKalb – The DeKalb School District 428 board approved a contract Tuesday for the district’s human resources director – again – but the president would not comment on how the situation got so confusing for the public.

“I can’t comment on personnel issues,” board President Victoria Newport said.

Members voted, 5-0, to renew Jim Bormann’s employment contract – the one previously approved in March.

The vote was minus two school board members who were absent. Superintendent Doug Moeller also did not attend the meeting.

Tempers had flared after some in the school district thought Bormann, who has headed HR since he arrived to the district in 2014, was going to get what they considered a bloated salary jump as part of his contract renewal this year.

At the Sept. 6 school board meeting, participants spoke during the time reserved for public comments and criticized what they thought was a more-than-$15,000 raise – going from his current $129,300 salary to $145,334.

In March, the school board approved school year 2016-17 salaries for principals and some district administrators.

Sycamore considering fees for donation boxes

SYCAMORE – Junk was piled up Tuesday around the USAgain donation boxes at 403 State St., where it had been for days.

Although the for-profit textile recycling company’s donation boxes solicit clothes and shoes, people have left all manner of unwanted junk – tube TVs, furniture, including an easy chair and a desk, and bags full of other items. City officials have heard complaints about inappropriate donations left at those four boxes, on the former Brown’s County Market property at 403 E. State St., City Manager Brian Gregory said.

“They become dumping grounds for TVs and sofas or recliners that obviously aren’t intended for these types of boxes,” Gregory said.

Soon, organizations that place collection or donation boxes in the city might have to pay an annual license fee under new regulations that city officials are considering.

Gregory told the Sycamore City Council on Monday that city staffers have been working on a license program to encourage communication between the companies that own the donation boxes and the property owners who host them. To place boxes in the city, organizations would have to pay an annual license fee and have written permission from the property owner.

Gregory said discussion of these regulations came up after police received complaints from two property owners about donation boxes that had been placed on their properties without permission.

Neither the property owners nor police were able to get in contact with the owners using the phone numbers on the boxes, so both property owners took apart and disposed of the boxes.

Gregory said most of the boxes in Sycamore belong to for-profit companies, and new regulations would reduce or waive license fees for nonprofit groups or businesses that have donation boxes as accessory structures. He said other communities typically charge annual license fees of $100 to $250 a box.

“We started on the staff level discussing what kind of program would address the unsightliness, but also not be punitive to the mission of the nonprofits that operate in our community,” Gregory said.

Ed Kuhn, secretary of the Sycamore Lions Club, said Monday that the community usually knows whom to contact for boxes owned by nonprofit organizations.

“We do have a box on the corner of Elm and California [streets] that’s been there for 10 years,” Kuhn said. “We get typically about 1,000 pairs of glasses out of that a year.”

First Ward Alderman Alan Bauer said Monday that he was not convinced that the city would know whom to contact about maintaining the boxes even with the license program.

“I’m just not sure that these people are intending to be easy to get a hold of, and I would almost be in favor of banning it altogether except for the not-forprofits as accessory structures,” Bauer said.

Gregory said the next step is to draft an ordinance outlining the specific regulations to bring to the council.

But shortly after that, he was approved to take on a title of assistant superintendent of administration. He was to be paid $145,334 for that role.

“The title was approved, but the money was never approved,” Newport said Tuesday.

The Daily Chronicle spoke to Bormann about the situation ahead of the meeting. He went on medical leave Sept. 12, he said, and could be out for up to four weeks.

“I know there was some dispute,” Bormann said. “There was some discrepancy … as far as the approval process.”

Tuesday’s contract approval indicates the district changed its mind on the higher salary position.

“It’s my understanding that they (school district) were going to ask me to resume the title of director, rather than the title of assistant superintendent,” Bormann said.

He will be paid $130,334, and the district to pick up 100 percent of his health care premiums and pension contributions.

Moeller said money has been the reason some administrators decided to leave the district.

“We have lost several good staff members ... It’s tough,” he said. “But at the same time, just like we any other group, we’ve got to control our expenditures.”

Joshua M. Burton, 30, of Sycamore, passed away Saturday, Sept. 17, 2016.

He was born June 6, 1986, in DeKalb, the son of Harold W. and Susan G. (Larson) Burton. He married Rebecca L. Maness on Feb. 28, 2015. Josh was the operations manager for Bowman Maness Tree Service. He started out 15 years ago learning how to climb trees and everything there was to know about them. He had his certificate for heavy machine operations.

Josh enjoyed outdoor adventures, including golf, paintball, four wheeling, snowmobiling, and swinging from limb to limb. He loved his Green Bay Packers and enjoyed his very first game at Lambeau Field with his wife. He could strategize better than anyone with poker, euchre and any other card games. Josh was very competitive. He also had a love of cooking, and most of the time it came out tasting good. Josh was a member of the Elk’s Club.

He loved to spend time with his family and friends. He was a fun-loving, adventurous, daring, kind, thoughtful and generous person. Josh had the biggest heart and took more pride in helping others than anyone could imagine. He loved life and took every chance he had to live it to the fullest.

Making people laugh and joking around was something you could count on.

Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Maness; his mother, Susan (Matt) Phelps; his father, Harold (Wanda) Burton; father and mother-in-law, Perry (Jeanne) Maness; brothers, Christopher Burton and Tyler

DeKALB – The DeKalb Area Agricultural Heritage Association will host the 18th anniversary screening of “Barbed Wire Pioneers” at 6 p.m.

Thursday at the Egyptian Theatre in DeKalb.

The award-winning documentary, directed by Northern Illinois University professor Jeff Chown, depicts the achievements of Isaac Ellwood, Jacob Haish and Joseph Glidden, the first successful manufacturers of barbed wire. Viewers learn how these men changed the face of world and shaped the future of DeKalb, NIU and the American West with their innovative technology.

A panel discussion after the film will feature Chown; Brian Reis, director of the Ellwood House and Museum; and Rob Glover, director of the Glidden Homestead.

General admission is $10. Students and teachers will be admitted free with a school ID, and teachers will receive a free DVD of the documentary for use in their classrooms.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – A Chicago federal judge on Tuesday sentenced a former Illinois National Guard soldier and his cousin to prison for plotting to join Islamic State fighters and attack a U.S. military facility.

Hasan Edmonds, 23, the former soldier, was sentenced in U.S. District Court to 30 years in prison. His cousin, Jonas Edmonds, 30, received a 21year prison sentence.

The sentences matched what prosecutors asked for the men, both residents of suburban Aurora.

Hasan Edmonds devised a plan to travel to the Middle East while Jonas Edmonds attacked the National Guard armory in Joliet, about 45 miles southwest of Chicago, according to prosecutors. The goal, prosecutors said, was to kill as many as 150 people at the facility.

Jonas Edmonds said he dropped off Hasan Edmonds at the airport to travel to the Middle East to join Islamic State fighters. But Jonas Edmonds denied he would have attacked the military armory.

Foul play suspected in 4 Rockford house fire deaths

ROCKFORD – Authorities in Rockford said they suspect foul play in the deaths of three children and a woman in a northern Illinois house fire.

The Winnebago County Coroner’s Office said 27-yearold Keandra Austin, 9-year-old V’Angelo Totty, 6-year-old Keeryn Austin and 6-month-old Aliya Beasley-Austin died in the Saturday morning blaze.

Coach who claimed team cheated sues Little League

CHICAGO – The coach who reported residency issues that led Little League Baseball International to strip a Chicago team of its 2014 U.S. championship has sued the league itself.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Evergreen Park coach Chris Janes filed the lawsuit Monday in federal court.

Janes claims that the league

initiated a cover-up after he told them several Jackie Robinson West players lived outside approved league boundaries, telling him his claim had no merit and exposing him and his family to “public humiliation, death threats and fear for their lives.”

The lawsuit said that three months after Janes said something, the league “changed its opinion” and found the team falsified a boundary map.

He is seeking more than $75,000 in damages for emotional distress.

The league declined to comment.

Meetings on deer disease set for northern Ill. cities

LENA – Illinois wildlife management officials have scheduled meetings to provide information on chronic wasting disease in the white-tailed deer population as hunting season nears.

Illinois Department of Natural Resources meetings on CWD will be Oct. 18 at the Nash Recreation Center in Oregon and Oct. 19 at the Big Rock Park District Community Building in Big Rock.

Previously announced meetings will be Wednesday in Elizabeth, Sept. 27 in Freeport and Sept. 28 in Yorkville. All start at 7 p.m.

Rauner creates state bicentennial planning groups

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner is gearing up for the Land of Lincoln’s 200th birthday.

The Republican governor signed an executive order Tuesday creating an Illinois Bicentennial Commission and the Governor’s Office of the Illinois Bicentennial to plan festivities for 2018.

Rauner hired Stuart Layne as Illinois Bicentennial Executive.

Layne has extensive marketing experience, and a news release said he has expertise in research, branding, publicity, events and sponsor partnerships.

Illinois became the nation’s 21st state on Dec. 3, 1818.

Rauner said the bicentennial will be a chance to “celebrate Illinois’ contributions to the country and the world and plan for our next 200 years of innovation and achievement.”

Rauner’s action dissolved a 77-member state bicentennial commission created in 2014.

The new, 51-member group will include 40 gubernatorial appointees.

FBI looked into suspect in bombing 2 years ago The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – The FBI looked into New York bombing suspect Ahmad Khan Rahami two years ago – and came up with nothing alarming – after his father expressed concerns his son might be a terrorist, law enforcement officials said Tuesday.

During the inquiry, the father backed away from talk of terrorism and told investigators that he simply meant his son was hanging out with the wrong crowd, including gang members, and acting like a thug, the officials said.

In any case, the FBI checked its databases and other sources and closed the inquiry in a matter of weeks after seeing nothing tying Rahami to terrorism, three law enforcement officials said.

Also Tuesday, investigators disclosed that when Rahami was shot and captured, he had a notebook with him that contained extremist ramblings.

One bloodstained section contained references to both Anwar al-Awlaki, the American-born cleric who was killed in a 2011 drone strike and whose preaching has inspired other acts of violence, and Nidal Hasan, the former Army officer who went on a deadly shooting rampage in 2009 at Fort Hood, Texas.

The information emerged as the younger Rahami, 28, was being held on $5.2 million bail, charged with the attempted murder of police officers during the shootout that led to his capture Monday outside a bar in Linden, New Jersey. Federal prosecutors said they were still drawing up charges over the weekend bomb-

ings in New York City and a New Jersey seaside town that wounded 29 people.

Rahami, a U.S. citizen born in Afghanistan, remained hospitalized Tuesday with gunshot wounds to the leg, forearm and shoulder, authorities said.

Federal agents have tried to question Rahami in the hospital. But Rep. Tom MacArthur, R-N.J., who received a classified briefing from the FBI, said Rahami was not cooperating. The congressman said he doesn’t know whether Rahami has a lawyer.

Investigators are looking into Rahami’s overseas travel, including a visit to Pakistan a few years ago, and want to know whether he received any money or training from extremist organizations.

Rahami’s father, Mohammad Rahami, spoke with the FBI after the younger Rahami was charged in 2014 with stabbing his brother, according to the officials, who were not authorized to discuss the investigation and spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity. Rahami was not prosecuted in the stabbing; a grand jury declined to indict him.

Rahami’s father told reporters Tuesday outside the family’s fried-chicken restaurant in Elizabeth, New Jersey, that he called the FBI at the time because Rahami “was doing real bad,” having stabbed the brother and hit his mother.

“But they checked, almost two months, and they say, ‘He’s OK, he’s clear, he’s not terrorist.’ Now they say he’s a terrorist,” the father said. Asked whether he thought his son was a terrorist, he said: “No. And the FBI, they know that.”

TULSA, Okla. – Investigators found the drug PCP in the vehicle of an unarmed black man fatally shot by a white officer, Oklahoma police said, but attorneys for the slain man’s family say discussion of drugs distracts from questions about the use of deadly force.

Tulsa Sgt. Dave Walker told the Tulsa World on Tuesday that investigators recovered one vial of PCP in Terence Crutcher’s SUV, but he declined to say where in the vehicle it was found or whether officers determined if Crutcher used it Friday night. Walker confirmed to The Associated Press that what he told the newspaper was true, but declined to comment further.

Attorneys for Crutcher’s family said the man’s relatives did not know whether drugs were found in his vehicle and, even if they were, that wouldn’t justify his fatal shooting.

“Let us not be throwing a red herring, and to say because something was found in the car that was justification to shoot him,” said attorney Benjamin Crump, one of the family’s lawyers.

Crump compared Crutcher’s shooting with Monday’s arrest of New York

bombing suspect Ahmad Khan Rahami, who police say engaged officers in a shootout.

“He wasn’t killed. So why was an unarmed black man who has committed no crime, who only needs a hand, given bullets in his lungs?” Crump said.

Tulsa police officer Betty Shelby fatally shot Crutcher, 40, on Friday after responding to a report of a stalled vehicle. Sgt. Shane Tuell said Tuesday that Shelby had a stun gun at the time of the shooting but did not use it. Officer Tyler Turnbough, who is also white, used a stun gun on Crutcher, police said.

Two 911 calls described an SUV that had been abandoned in the middle of the road. One unidentified caller said the driver was acting strangely, adding, “I think he’s smoking something.”

Oklahoma prison officials confirmed Tuesday that Crutcher served four years in prison on a drug conviction from 2007 to 2011.

But Damario Solomon-Simmons, another attorney for Crutcher’s family, said Shelby and other officers had no way of knowing about Crutcher’s background or the potential for drugs in his vehicle when they approached him Friday.

UNITED NATIONS – U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon railed Tuesday against leaders who keep “feeding the war machine” in Syria as he bowed out of the world stage, while President Barack Obama said there was no military solution to the five-year conflict and described a globe in the throes of a contest between authoritarianism and democracy.

Both Ban and Obama were making their final speeches at the annual gathering of world leaders at the United Nations. They did so against a backdrop of mounting bloodshed and a failing cease-fire in Syria, escalating attacks around the world by Islamic extremists, and millions of people fleeing fighting and poverty.

The U.N. chief, whose 10-year period at the helm of the unwieldy world body ends Dec. 31, vented his pent-up frustration with uncharacteristic candor, telling the opening of the General Assembly’s annual ministerial meeting that “powerful patrons” on both sides in the Syrian conflict – which he did not identify – “have blood on their hands.”

resentatives of governments that have ignored, facilitated, funded, participated in or even planned and carried out atrocities inflicted by all sides of the Syria conflict against Syrian civilians,” he said.

But Ban blamed the Syrian government for the most deaths. He said it was continuing to drop barrel bombs on neighborhoods and torture thousands of detainees. Syria’s Foreign Ministry condemned Ban’s address and contended that the U.N had failed to resolve any conflicts on his watch.

Ban spoke as the U.S., Russia and more than a dozen other countries attempted to resurrect a week-old truce, and Washington and Moscow argued over who was responsible for an attack Monday on an aid convoy that killed some 20 civilians that the U.N. chief denounced as a “sickening, savage and apparently deliberate attack.” Ban called the bombers “cowards.”

The Syrian conflict has killed as many as half-million people, contributed to Europe’s worst refugee crisis since World War II and allowed the Islamic State group to emerge as a global threat.

Obama acknowledged that the extremist and sectarian violence wreaking havoc in the Mideast and elsewhere “will not be quickly reversed.” Still, he stuck faithfully to his insistence that diplomatic efforts and not military solutions are the key to resolving Syria’s civil war and other conflicts.

He lamented that while the world has become a safer and more prosperous place by many measures, people have lost faith in public institutions amid frightening problems such as terrorism and a devastating refugee crisis.

“It’s no surprise that some argue the future favors the strongman,” Obama said. “But I believe the road to true democracy remains the better path.”

While there was no mention of the bitterly fought U.S. presidential contest, this year’s General Assembly opens amid uncertainty over who will succeed Obama, and perhaps less crucially, who will succeed former South Korean diplomat Ban at the U.N. In a less-than-subtle jab at Donald Trump, the Republican running to replace him, Obama said, “The world is too small for us to simply be able to build a wall and prevent [extremism] from affecting our own societies.”

Jordan’s King Abdullah II offered an impassioned defense of Islam while condemning extremists as outlaws who want to “drag us back to the dark ages.” But he added that false perceptions of Islam in the West were breeding further intolerance.

Obama was unabashed in his critique of Russia as he laid out his diagnosis of the world’s ills. Obama’s longstanding differences with Russian President Vladimir Putin over his actions in Ukraine have accompanied intense disagreement over Syria’s future and a series of failed attempts by Russia and the U.S. to resolve the civil war there together.

“In a world that left the age of empire behind, we see Russia attempting to recover lost glory through force,” Obama said.

Case for optimism America has a reputation for its optimism, its can-do spirit, its willingness to explore and innovate. And yet, an atmosphere of pessimism has spread across the landscape, a dark vision telling us that we are besieged and in decline.

What shall it be – optimism or pessimism? How should we think about ourselves?

The case for pessimism is strong, bolstered every day by the venality of our fellow Americans. Pessimism took root during the Great Recession, when millions of people lost their jobs and homes, and millions more saw their income and standard of living imperiled. The fact that the swindlers on Wall Street who engineered the disaster escaped with their millions, unindicted and unpunished, was a twist of the knife.

A variation on this theme made the news last week when it was revealed that 5,300 employees of one of the nation’s largest banks, Wells Fargo, had been fired for the practice of setting up phony accounts for unaware customers who were billed for phony fees. Wells Fargo had to pay a fine of $185 million, but the executive who engineered the scam was rewarded with money and stock benefits of $124.6 million.

If that’s the way the world works, why shouldn’t we be pessimistic?

Another recent news story showed that the sugar industry had distorted the scientific research into the health effects of sugar by paying off scientists. The harm to the health of Americans because of the pervasive ingestion of sugar-sweetened drinks and other forms of sugar has been catastrophic, and the way was paved by corruption.

The paralysis of Congress is a solid reason for pessimism. The majority in Congress is captured by fantasies spun by industry that the climate disaster now upon us is not real. Because the refusal to spend money is the be-all and end-all of the GOP majority, Congress likewise refuses to address the pressing needs of the nation in all areas.

Pessimism among Republicans is grounded in other concerns – a belief that international trade and immigration are spelling our doom.

is further cause for gloom among Democrats.

So where is the cause for optimism? In fact, despite Republican pessimism and the struggles plaguing people on the economic margins, recovery from the Great Recession is picking up steam. The median income was up 5.2 percent last year, the largest increase since record-keeping began in 1967.

The fact that Wells Fargo was called to account for its scam and faced a sizable fine is owing to the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which was a key part of the financial reforms backed

by President Barack Obama and pushed by Elizabeth Warren, now a senator from Massachusetts.

If optimism is to have a chance, we have to believe that it is possible to act in our own interests. In policing the banks, we are doing so.

Republicans speak as a matter of habit against regulation, but how are we to protect ourselves from the corruption of the sugar (or tobacco) industry, or from pollution by chemicals in our water, or from the insistence of the fossil fuel industry that we fill the atmosphere with carbon, if we are not willing to get tough with those industries?

We also need to protect ourselves from the corruption of government by business, which is why vigilance, oversight, a vigorous press and the regulation of money in politics are necessary for the public good.

It is no accident that one of Obama’s slogans during his first campaign was “Yes We Can,” or “Sí Se Puede.” Digging out from under the avalanche of the recession and taking action on financial reform, health care reform and economic revitalization were not easy, but the fact that recovery in the United States has outpaced that in Europe is an indication that Obama activism was more effective than European austerity.

Optimistic? It’s possible to be optimistic. The Republican candidate has fashioned a politics of negativity and defeat that, should he be elected, would be grounds for the direst pessimism. But that isn’t going to happen – about that we are optimistic. We have to be.

How effective are cops in schools?

Knowing that police officers are patrolling K-12 schools makes many parents feel better about sending their children off to class each day.

But how much safer do the school police make students, staff and campus property?

A real answer to this big question is hard to come by.

That’s the worrisome take-away from a new look at the subject by The Christian Science Monitor, which cites experts and anecdotes to lay out the national issue: “At a moment when officers in schools are seen by some as a solution to the threat of violence in school, the debate has been turned on its head: Are these so-called school resource officers (SROs) actually the cause of too much violence? Instead of making schools safer, are they ramping up a disciplinary arms race – unnecessarily turning typical bad behavior into criminal offenses?”

This is known: SROs are increasing in number, with the National Center for Education Statistics saying the percentage of U.S. schools having them rose from 1 in 1975 to 40 in 2014.

Among questions raised: How well are campus officers trained for tasks that often go beyond security, law and rule enforce-

ment to include mentoring and counseling? Does aggressive campus policing leave kids with criminal records for misbehavior that would have been addressed by parents and teachers in years past? Are minorities disciplined disproportionately?

The massive Los Angeles Unified School District has the nation’s largest school police force, including more than 400 sworn officers and 100 safety officers.

Speaking with an editorial writer, L.A. Schools Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Julie Spry could provide no data attesting to the force’s effectiveness.

Anecdotal reports indicate officers do many wonderful things for kids.

But The Christian Science Monitor quoted Sheri Bauman, a University of Arizona education professor: “There’s such a widespread belief that (SROs) make kids safer, yet we don’t really know that. ... We need to have some scientific analyses that answer those questions.”

In an era when the public expects city and county law-enforcement agencies to provide specific data on trends in crime and officer deployment on our streets, no less should be expected from the departments protecting our schools.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Trump unfit for White House ... so what are we?

“I know you are, but what am I?” Maybe you remember that one from the schoolyard. It was one of those unanswerable taunts – “I’m rubber, you’re glue” was another – widely favored by smart-alecky kids, a bit of verbal judo that took an attacker’s thrust and turned it back against her.

“I know you are, but what am I?” Most of us outgrew the riposte about the same time we outgrew passing notes in class. Apparently, Donald Trump never did. Far from leaving it behind, he has honed it into a potent political tool perfect for this era of post-factual lassitude and cognitive dissonance. As Campaign 2016 grinds toward a reckoning, we are seeing that tool employed with breathtaking shamelessness.

It works like this: Whatever Trump is called or accused of, he turns it back on the accuser. Did you ever see that scene in “The Equalizer” where a bad guy points a gun at Denzel Washington and, faster than the eye can follow, Denzel snatches the gun and points it back at him?

It’s something like that, except with

So the man who claims that he’s always opposed the Iraq War (even though he didn’t), the man who said the election is rigged, (even though it isn’t), the man who told us Barack Obama founded ISIS (even though – duh! – he didn’t), the man whose PolitiFact scorecard rules over 80 percent of his rated statements as half-truths and untruths ... that man complains that Hillary Clinton is “a world-class liar.”

And the man whose idea of releasing medical information is a brief note from his doctor so loopy, imprecise and filled with wild, extravagant claims (Trump “will be the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency”) that one doctor dubs it “medically illiterate” ... that man tells us it’s the mysteries of Hillary Clinton’s health we ought to be concerned about.

And the man who said a judge was unfit to judge because he is of Mexican heritage, the man who wants a ban on Muslim immigration, the man who retweets racists and anti-Semites, the man who is openly beloved by white supremacists to the point that former Klansman David Duke seems about ready to kiss him on the lips ... that man condemns Hillary Clinton as “a bigot.”

Not to put too fine a point on it, but having Donald Trump lecture you about bigotry, transparency or truth is rather like having Kanye West tell you to stop behaving like a jack–s.

In psychology, they have this phenomenon called projection. The Cambridge Dictionary of Psychology defines it as a “primitive defense mechanism” that involves “the unconscious warding off of negative experiences or emotions by denying an experience, perceiving it in another person and then seeing that negative experience as being directed back at the projector.”

Which sounds like what we’re seeing here, except there is nothing

“unconscious” about it.

No, this is calculated, born of a conviction that there really is a sucker born every minute – and that an alarming proportion of them vote in American elections. So the challenge here is simple: What will we say in response? How will we answer this insult to intelligence?

Or are we too sick of it all to care?

One has a sense of an electorate pummeled into emotional submission.

Which is hardly surprising. It’s been a long, dispiriting campaign largely bereft of ideas, proposals and uplift.

But it is important to remember that November will be a moment of truth in more ways than one. Indeed, November will answer a critical question.

You say Trump is an ignorant narcissist unfit for the White House?

Yes, we know he is.

But what are we?

Let’s get the priorities straight on climate change

Policy expert Bjorn Lomborg answers The Washington Post’s question: How much should the next president be willing to spend on mitigation or retooling for renewable energy?

The next administration must recognize not only that climate change is a real problem, but also that we are not on course to solve it.

The next president needs the courage to discard our current feel-good but ineffective solutions. Ending our reliance on the fossil fuels that have powered two centuries of economic growth will require an energy revolution.

Many policies focus on solving global warming by investing in solar and wind; but over the coming quarter-century, these technologies will contribute only marginally to the solution.

Moreover, they are not competitive now and will be mostly inefficient for at least 25 years.

The International Energy Agency estimates that just 0.5 percent of the world’s energy comes from solar and

wind; and even with the Paris agreement, this will increase to only 2.4 percent by 2040. It also estimates that the world is spending about $90 billion on solar and wind subsidies this year, and that even by 2040, they still will need about the same support.

That’s not sustainable.

Fixing climate change will require what philanthropist Bill Gates calls an “energy miracle”: a massive increase in research and development, by far the most effective way to find new breakthrough technologies cheap enough to outcompete fossil fuels. If that happens, we will have fixed global warming, because everyone will switch to cheaper energy sources.

Green energy innovation initiatives launched at the Paris Treaty talks by Gates, other business leaders and about 20 governments are an excellent start. Gates is investing $2 billion in the Breakthrough Energy Coalition, and President Barack Obama and fellow leaders have promised to double global green energy R&D to $30 billion annually in 2021.

But this is only a start. A panel of Nobel laureates for the Copenhagen Consensus on Climate project

found that we should not just double research funding, but also increase it more than six times over, to $100 billion a year.

We also must bear in mind that global warming is not the planet’s only challenge. We often hear that it is the defining issue of our time, but it is no such thing. By the 2070s, the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimates that warming will cost between 0.2 percent and 2 percent of global GDP. This is certainly a problem, but not the end of the world.

Speaking of climate change in catastrophic terms easily makes us ignore bigger problems, including malnutrition, tuberculosis, malaria and corruption.

The World Health Organization estimates that climate change since the 1970s causes about 140,000 additional deaths each year, and toward the middle of the century will kill 250,000 people annually, mostly in poor countries. This pales in comparison with much deadlier environmental problems such as indoor air pollution, claiming 4.3 million lives annually, outdoor air pollution killing 3.7 million and lack of water and

sanitation killing 760,000. Outside of environment, the problems are even bigger: Poverty arguably kills 18 million each year.

Every dollar spent on climate change could instead help save many more people from these more tractable problems.

The current approach to subsidize solar and wind arguably saves one life across the century for every $4 million spent – the same expenditure on vaccinations could save 4,000 lives. Each person – and the next president – must decide his or her legacy.

The next president must focus on the smartest solutions for all the world’s many ills, not just those that get the most attention. In facing climate change, he or she needs the courage to forgo subsidizing politically popular solar and wind, and to focus on green research that will help much more to solve the problem.

without this result today, those hopes would pretty much go up in flames. I was real proud of our collective focus before and during the game and our work rate we had. It’s been awhile since we put a few goals on the board, so I thought it was well-deserved.”

One thing that can be credited to the Knights’ tough season is the injuries they’ve suffered, but Parillo sees the positive experience that gives his team.

“We’ve had a rash of injuries and we’re pretty depleted,” Parillo said.

“We’re throwing people in there in different positions that they wouldn’t normally play, and that’s a good thing, too. They gain some much-needed experience that way.”

Bradley-Bourbonnais faces 1st big test

Bradley-Bourbonnais continued to put up big numbers on the scoreboard in its 42-30 victory over Sandburg in Week 4.

Quarterback Morion Burtis Jr. and wideout/safety Camron Harrell, an Iowa commit, once again put on a show with the duo having a hand in all six of Bradley’s touchdowns.

The Boilermakers, ranked fifth in this week’s Associated Press Class 7A poll, have scored at least 34 points in each of their four wins to open the season.

One consideration before adding Bradley-Bourbonnais to the list of elite teams in Class 7A: Coach Mike Kohl’s squad hasn’t faced a taxing schedule thus far.

That changes Friday, when the Boilermakers play host to Bolingbrook.

We’ll find out then whether Bradley’s fantastic talent at the skill positions can overcome its size disadvantage against a larger opponent’s offensive and defensive lines.

Is McHenry playoff-bound?

McHenry put together a remarkable playoff string of 20 consecutive appearances from 1988 through 2007, but the Warriors have not been to the postseason since. They took a significant step in that direction with a 39-21 victory Friday over Crystal Lake Central.

Marengo running back Jarren Jackson played an integral role last year in a prolific offense as the Indians advanced to the Class 4A playoffs semifinals before losing to eventual state champion Chicago Phillips.

Jackson ran for 1,451 yards and 18 touchdowns for the 12-1 Indians despite the offense being more pass-oriented.

In Friday’s 46-41 loss to Woodstock North, Jackson had his third consecutive 30-carry, 200-yard game.

Jackson carried 33 times for 209 yards and three touchdowns as Marengo (3-1) suffered its first loss. Jackson has 105 carries for 687 yards in his past three games.

DeKalb’s Tate having good start to collegiate career

Tate had three receptions for 29 yards – including a 15-yard catch – for Division II Walsh University (North Canton, Ohio) in Saturday’s 27-17 loss to Saginaw Valley. On the season, the freshman from DeKalb has eight receptions for 97 yards, which is good for third on the Cavaliers. Tate has an average of 12.1 yards a catch and also completed 2-of-4 passes for 10 yards.

• • • In a 45-12 loss to Minnesota State, Gary Koehring had six tackles and a tackle for a loss for D-II St. Cloud State.

The junior linebacker from Kaneland has 17 tackles on the season for St. Cloud (1-2).

‘D’ keeps Oswego unbeaten

You won’t notice in the Week 4 score, but the Oswego defense has given up only 12 points through four games – making this one of the best defensive units under coach Brian Cooney. The Panthers held Plainfield North to a field goal in the first half as Oswego led, 7-3, at halftime, but Plainfield North returned two interceptions for touchdowns to take a 17-7 lead in the third quarter.

Oswego held Plainfield North to negative-7 yards of offense in the second half, and the Panthers offense recovered from the two turnovers to score 20 straight points to keep the Panthers undefeated at 4-0.

Oswego East (4-0) continues to roll through the Southwest Prairie Conference, winning, 40-19, over Plainfield South. The Wolves struggled with penalties and turned the ball over three times against the Cougars – two things they will need to clean up when they travel to Plainfield North (3-1) in Week 5.

Farther west in Kendall County, Plano is 2-2 after a 63-26 win over Sandwich, but the next two weeks will be big. First, the Reapers must find a way to win at Manteno – a field they

Crystal Lake South offensive tackle Trevor Keegan, a 6-foot-6, 290-pound sophomore, suffered a concussion in Friday’s 56-7 loss at Prairie Ridge and is out indefinitely.

Keegan had blocked a Prairie Ridge player and as he was falling to the ground was struck in the head flush by running back Michael Swiatly’s knee. Keegan was unconscious for a few moments. Keegan is an NCAA Division I prospect and has a scholarship offer from Northwestern.

“I sprinted out there like it was one of my own sons,” Gators coach Chuck Ahsmann said. “We kind of woke him up and made sure everything was OK.” Amanda Keegan, Trevor’s mother, is a school nurse and took him to emergency care right away. Ahsmann said Keegan will undergo the concussion protocol and see a doctor this week for further examination.

Ahsmann expected Keegan to miss at least this week’s game.

Judge rules Rose accuser must reveal her name publicly

LOS ANGELES – A Los Angeles federal judge ruled Tuesday that a woman accusing NBA star Derrick Rose of rape cannot remain anonymous at her upcoming civil trial.

Lawyers for the woman, who is identified in court documents as Jane Doe, argued that her privacy should be protected because she is vulnerable and she already has been harassed after her name was leaked.

U.S. District Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald said the law was clear on the issue and he wouldn’t close his courtroom to protect her identity. He said any decision by the news media about whether to name her is a journalistic decision.

The Associated Press typically does not identify alleged victims of sexual abuse.

The woman sued Rose last year, claiming the former MVP and two of his friends raped her in August 2013 while she was incapacitated after a night of drinking. Rose and the others deny her claims and contend they had consensual sex with her that night.

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com LAKE FOREST – In addition to Jay Cutler, who could miss time with a sprained right thumb, the Bears might be without five other starter-caliber players when they travel to Dallas to play the Cowboys on Sunday night in Week 3.

Starting inside linebacker Danny Trevathan has a thumb sprain that will require surgery this morning, coach John Fox said, adding the injury is not expected to be seaDanny son-ending. Jonathan Trevathan Anderson would be the “next man up” to replace Trevathan, but the Bears also could consider fourth-round draft pick Nick Kwiatkoski, who has yet to be active.

According to multiple reports, Lamarr Houston tore an ACL in the loss.

Houston hasn’t been a starter, but he did lead the Bears in sacks last season, and the team already is without Pernell McPhee at outside linebacker. Sam Acho would get more reps with Houston out of the lineup, and the Bears also could use Christian Jones at outside linebacker.

Houston counts $6.99 million against the team’s cap next year, so it’s fair to wonder whether Phil Emery’s big free-agent signing from 2014 has played his final game as a Bear.

Eddie Goldman has a high ankle

sprain, according to the Chicago Tribune, that is expected to keep him out for four weeks. He was carted off the field Monday night after being active in the trenches. Will Sutton is the team’s backup nose tackle.

Running back Ka’Deem Carey has an injured hamstring. Rookie Jordan Howard had 22 yards on three carries in his first NFL action Monday.

Bryce Callahan and Adrian Amos both are in the concussion protocol.

Chris Prosinski, who replaced Amos, has a bruised calf. Rookie safety Deon Bush was inactive for the first two games and DeAndre Houston-Carson has been playing special teams.

Sherrick McManis replaced Callahan at the nickel corner position. The Bears might get Kyle Fuller back next week, which could cause some shuffling at the position.

After a season opener in which no Bears suffered any injuries, they snowballed Monday, adding to a disappointing 0-2 start.

“I’ve always been of the belief that tough times don’t last, tough people do, and injuries are a part of that,” Fox said. “We started the season without a couple of corners, we’ve got some young guys that have gotten an opportunity that it seems that they’re learning from – I think in some cases have excelled in – so we’ll figure it out.

“I like our roster, I like our choices, and we’ll do everything we can to get everybody ready for Dallas.”

PHILADELPHIA – Odubel Herrera kept up his hitting surge with a homer among his three hits and drove in three runs as the Philadelphia Phillies held off a late White Sox rally in a 7-6 win Tuesday night.

Tommy Joseph and Roman Quinn added two hits apiece and combined to drive in three runs for the Phillies. Herrera, who hits between Joseph and Quinn in the lineup, is 15 for 28 in his past seven games.

Melky Cabrera hit a three-run home run for the Sox, who have lost four straight.

Struggling veteran James Shields (5-18), winless since July 26, allowed six earned runs and nine hits in 51/3 innings.

Trailing 7-3 in the ninth, the Sox pulled within one on a two-out wild pitch and a two-run double from Adam Eaton. Howev-

er, Michael Mariot came on and got Tim Anderson to ground out to short to end the game and pick up his first career save.

Jake Thompson (3-5) gave up three runs and four hits over five innings. The rookie right-hander, who struggled for most of August after first getting called up from the minors, has won his past two starts and has a 2.99 ERA over his past five appearances.

For the second straight game, the Phillies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. After Quinn walked, Herrera hit a 1-1 pitch into the Phillies bullpen for his 15th homer of the season.

Herrera also started a two-out rally in the third, singling and stealing second, before scampering home on Joseph’s twoout double. Joseph then came home when Anderson couldn’t handle a sharp liner off the bat of Maikel Franco, giving the Phillies a 4-3 lead.

LAKE FOREST – Bears quarterback Jay Cutler has a sprained right thumb that doesn’t need surgery right now, but John Fox wouldn’t rule it out entirely when the Bears’ coach met the media Tuesday at Halas Hall.

Fox also wouldn’t say whether Cutler will miss Sunday night’s game in Dallas.

“We’ll just take it day to day, and Brian Hoyer stepped in, and I thought did a pretJay Cutler ty good job,” he said.

“We’ll evaluate that tomorrow and split up practice as need be.”

Adam Jahns of the Chicago SunTimes reported Cutler originally suffered ligament damage in the throwing thumb against the Texans in Week 1. He played through it and then aggravated the injury when he was strip-sacked against the Eagles in the third quarter Monday night.

Cutler stayed in the game and threw an interception on the next drive, his final play of the 29-14 loss.

Cutler said after the game he had trouble gripping the ball and “couldn’t get as much as I wanted” on the pass that floated to Eagles linebacker Nigel

Bradham.

Fox wouldn’t say whether Cutler injured his thumb further in Houston, referring to the injury he suffered in 2011, which required surgery.

“I think Jay probably originally hurt his thumb five years ago. But that’d be no, he practiced every play of practice last week,” he said, adding that the thumb “didn’t appear” to affect Cutler in practice.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the Bears are “preparing for a lengthy absence” for Cutler.

“It’s hard for me to give timelines,” Fox said. “We’ll evaluate tomorrow.

We’ve got practice tomorrow, we’re on a short week already. If Jay’s ready to do it, fine. If not, we’ll go with Brian Hoyer.”

The Bears will head into Dallas with a 0-2 record. In relief Monday night, Hoyer completed 9 of 12 passes for 78 yards against Philadelphia.

For Houston last season, Hoyer threw 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions, but tossed four interceptions in a playoff loss. The 30-year-old, eightyear veteran has 26 career starts.

Cutler has missed at least one game in each of the past six seasons.

He was wearing a cast on his right hand Monday night and missed the final six games of the 2011 season when he last injured his right thumb.

Apple cake signals fall Resist urge to dress up simple seasonal dessert

My grandmother, who lived with us when I was growing up, had a serious sweet tooth and would bake something almost every day. In the spring, it was coconut cream pie. In the summer, home-made ice cream and peach pie.

And during fall apple season, she would bake this very simple apple cake and serve it warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

My mother and I loved this cake – it’s so simple, yet so satisfying and comforting – and never thought to write it down before my grandmother died. For years, we searched her recipe cards to no avail until last summer when I was doing research for a new cookbook called “Steak and Cake.”

Happily, we came across a recipe

card that looked like it might be the thing. I made the cake immediately, and as my mother and I tasted it, we finally knew we had found the one.

Sometimes, the memory outshines the reality. But in this cake, it did not.

As I was testing recipes for the cookbook, I added my grandmother’s apple cake to 10 other cakes, some classic and some new-fangled, for a neighborhood tasting – the cookbook writer’s version of a “cake walk.” Everyone gravitated toward my grandmother’s cake.

I had to stop myself from adding a pinch of salt and a teaspoon of vanilla to the batter as I rarely make a cake without it, but I decided I should preserve this cake just the way my grandmother made it. The batter is stiff – like cookie dough – before you add the apples, but rest assured as soon as the apples give up their juice, the batter

loosens and will bake beautifully.

Grandmother Odom’s Apple Cake Start to finish: 90 minutes Servings: 8-12

4 generous cups raw apples, peeled and cut coarse (about 5 large Granny Smith apples) 2 cups granulated white sugar 1/2 cup vegetable oil such as Crisco 2 large eggs 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 2 teaspoons baking soda 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup chopped toasted walnuts Confectioner’s sugar for decorating Cooking spray Heat the oven to 350 degrees F. Peel and chop apples and set aside. Mean-

while, beat together sugar and oil and add eggs one at a time until creamy.

Whisk together flour, cinnamon and soda.

Add dry mixture to sugar, oil and eggs by thirds. Remove from stand mixer and fold in chopped apples. Let sit for 5 minutes, stir well and add walnuts. Mix well.

Pour batter into prepared pan – I prefer Baker’s Joy or another brand of spray coating with flour – and place on a sheet pan to bake.

Bake 60-65 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool in the pan 10 minutes, then invert on a cake cooling rack. Dust top with confectioner’s sugar if desired.

1/4 teaspoon salt Confectioners’ sugar, optional Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Line bottom of an 8-inch square baking pan with parchment paper and spray with nonstick spray. In a medium bowl, whip coconut oil, Earl Grey leaves, lemon zest and agave syrup using a hand mixer until well-blended and light. Add the eggs one at time and mix well with mixer in between. Add the vanilla and lemon juice and mix well.

In a small bowl, sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Then pour in half the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients and mix

very briefly. Add the second half of the flour and mix just until blended. Do not overmix.

Scrape the batter into the prepared pan and bake until cake springs back after pressing lightly with your finger, about 25-30 minutes.

Let the cake cool for 10 minutes in the pan, and then remove to let cool completely on a rack. Cut into 14 fingers and sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar (optional) and serve.

I love dessert. I also love being healthy. My four kiddos also love sweets. So over the years, I’ve created some great strategies for getting some dessert in our lives while also honoring our bodies.

If you love baked goods too, go ahead and preheat that oven and listen in – I’ve got some tips for keeping dessert alive while staying reasonable.

First: Make your own. Not only can I manage what is going in them (so I reduce sugar and skip preservatives and artificial stuff), but making my own baked treats puts a minimum half-hour buffer between me and a pan of brownies, which means we all will eat treats mindfully.

Second healthy dessert tip: Cut up small portions of treats and serve them on a tray alongside a healthier “open quantity” option. For instance, I may place a large bowl of clementines or lowfat Greek yogurt on the table next to a plate of homemade banana bread cut into small squares. Diluting the baked goodie with a protein or fiber-filled option is a low-stress way to make dessert healthier for the whole family.

Third tip: invest in a confectioners’

sugar duster and fill it up with organic powdered sugar. Even a tiny dusting of powdered sugar fools our palates into thinking something is sweeter than it is, simply because it’s visible.

Finally, a tip just for the adults: Drink espresso with a chunk of dark chocolate or a small finger of homemade cake (like this week’s Earl Grey lemon teacakes) for dunking – the deep roasted flavor of espresso coupled with just a little sweet makes a surprisingly satisfying, and sophisticated, dessert.

The third- and fourth-grade students from North Elementary School in Sycamore recently were treated to a visit by author Tommy Greenwald. He is the author of the popular series “Charlie Joe Jackson” and also the new series “Crimebiters.” Greenwald is pictured autographing books for Jillian Hansen, Mia Gulke and Mason Heine.

Genoa-Kingston students in seventh and eighth grade were treated to a visit by a local author. “Enduring Vision: From an Encampment to a Distinctive College,” written

by Rita Yerkes and Wilma Miranda, tells the history of George Williams College. The students heard how Robert Weidensall brought the idea of the program from England and with the help of George Williams and I. E. Brown, Illinois Secretary of State, the movement continued to grow. Yerkes discussed the time commitment to writing, researching and checking sources.

28 More companies reward healthy behavior Dear Dr. K: My employer has started offering employees financial rewards for weight loss. I’m skeptical. Does this kind of financial incentive really work?

Dear Reader: Offering financial incentives to employees for making healthy lifestyle changes is increasingly common.

These days, nearly 80 percent of large employers do it. There are many ways to offer incentives, and doctors and economists still are learning what works best.

Some experiments have been successful.

For example, employees at two large companies randomly were selected to receive up to $800 to quit smoking. They were three times more likely to quit than employees encouraged to quit but not given money for doing so.

Other experiments have not worked as well. Employees in another company were selected at random to receive a bonus of $550 to lose weight. They were no more successful than employees not offered a bonus.

The timing of when the bonus is given appears to affect behavioral change.

People who receive payments separately (not lumped in with their paycheck) and repeatedly (every month rather than at the end of the trial period) are more responsive to incentives.

How the incentive is provided also may affect a person’s response. For example, over three months, employees in one company were given a positive incentive to walk: $2 every day they walked 7,000 steps.

Others were given a negative incentive for not walking. They received a “bank account” that contained all the money they might earn if they walked 7,000 steps each day. They then had $2 taken away every day they did not walk 7,000 steps. Both types of incentive worked better than no incentive at all. But the negative incentive – losing money you could have won – was a

There is some evidence incentives work better when offered to groups of people, rather than on an individual basis. These programs usually involve financial incentives that are tied to the group’s success.

When an individual fails to meet his or her personal goal, it reduces the bonus all other members of the group will receive. If you fail to meet your personal goal, the others in the group suffer a financial hit – and they will know you are the reason for it.

It’s a powerful incentive not to miss your personal goal.

Even if it turns out financial incentives generally do help people to adopt a healthy lifestyle, it remains to be seen how lasting this change in behavior will be. And it also remains unclear whether the savings to employers from reduced medical expenses due to healthier lifestyles will be greater than the money spent on the incentives themselves.

But as far as I’m concerned, it’s worth a look. Our lives are filled with incentives and disincentives designed to encourage actions that benefit both us and the people around us. From traffic lights to auto insurance premiums that drop if we avoid accidents or traffic tickets, our society tries to channel our behavior. I see nothing wrong with it – if it works.

There are occasional disagreements, but fortunately, they never escalate.

The problem is, when I spend time with any of them separately I am lectured nonstop about the “evils” of the other side. They don’t quit. I just want to scream, “Shut up! Shut up! I don’t care.” I am at the point I no longer want to vote. I don’t know what to do. There’s no way I can avoid my family completely.

Clever people tend to play bridge better than the less-clever -- but not always. One of the weakest players I ever saw got a first-class honors degree and went on to gain a Ph.D. It is always fun to find a clever piece of declarer-play or defense.

What can East-West do that qualifies in this deal, where South is in three spades?

The bidding featured two relatively modern conventions. First, West made a Snapdragon Double, which showed length (five or six cards) in the unbid suit (clubs) and tolerance for partner’s suit (typically honor doubleton; but maybe three low if the doubler’s suit is particularly strong; or at a real pinch, even a low doubleton). North’s spade raise guaranteed four-card support, because with only three spades he would have made a Support Redouble.

When East competed with three clubs, South bid three spades because he knew his side had a nine-card fit.

At first glance, South will lose only two hearts and two clubs. But the defenders have an extra trick up their sleeves. West leads the club ace. Since the queen is on the board, East signals count, playing the eight, starting a high-low (echo) with an even number. West cashes the club king, then shifts to the heart queen, East encouraging with his seven. East takes the second heart and returns a low heart. When West ruffs with the spade jack, the uppercut promotes a trump trick for East.
