‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘Veep’ POLL take top honors at Emmys

The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – “Game of Thrones” conquered the Emmy kingdom Sunday, honored as top drama for the second consecutive year and becoming the most honored prime-time TV series ever on a night of surprises and sharp political jabs.

“Veep” repeated as best comedy series, and its star, Julia-Louis Dreyfus, won a record-breaking sixth Emmy as best comedy actress. Jeffrey Tambor’s trophy as top comedy actor for “Transparent” also was his second.

But the top drama acting trophies were far from predictable: Rami Malek of “Mr. Robot” and Tatiana Maslany of “Orphan Black” were the winners, both overcoming heavyweight competition.

“Oh, my God. Please tell me you’re seeing this, too,” said a stunned Malek, who plays an emotionally troubled engineer caught up in a dangerous hacking conspiracy.

“Games of Thrones,” the fantasy saga based on George R.R. Martin’s novels, received a total of 12 awards Sunday and at last weekend’s technical arts ceremony for a cumulative 38, besting “Frasier” by one to claim most primetime series awards ever.

The Emmys proved more adroit than the Oscars at recognizing and honoring diversity in Hollywood’s top ranks, with trophies going to minority actors and behind-the-scenes artists including writers Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang of “Master of None.”

But Viola Davis of “How to Get Away with Murder” failed to repeat her 2015 best drama actress win, the first for a woman of color.

Louis-Dreyfus used her victory to take a dig at GOP contender Donald Trump in a ceremony loaded with election-year asides.

Tambor captured his second consecutive best comedy actor trophy for “Transparent,” in which he plays a transgender character.

He called for Hollywood to make him the last non-transgender actor to get such a role.

by dedicating the trophy to her father, who she said died Friday. Before that, she honed in on GOP contender Donald Trump’s campaign.

“I’d also like to take this opportunity to personally apologize for the current political climate,” she said. “I think that ‘Veep’ has torn down the wall between comedy and politics.

Our show started out as a political satire, but it now feels more like a sobering documentary.”

She promised to “rebuild that wall and make Mexico pay for it.”

Her victory gave her six best comedy wins – five for “Veep,” one for “The New Adventures of Old Christine” – and broke her tie with Candice Bergen and Mary Tyler Moore.

Maggie Smith was honored as best supporting actress in a drama series for the final season of “Downton Abbey.” It was her third win for playing the formidable dowager. As has become her custom, she didn’t attend the ceremony. And after Smith’s win Kimmel said her Emmy would not be mailed to her but would be kept in the Microsoft Theater’s Lost and Found until she shows up to claim it.

Ben Mendelsohn of “Bloodline” won as best supporting drama actor and also was a no-show.

John Oliver captured the best variety talk series award for “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” besting competitors including Jerry Seinfeld and host Jimmy Kimmel – who received barbed consolation on stage from Matt Damon, his longtime faux nemesis. The loss “makes a lot of sense,” Damon said.

“The People v. O.J. Simpson,” which earned the second-highest number of nominations, converted five to trophies Sunday.

The dramatic retelling of the football star’s murder trial was honored as best limited series and writing, and earned awards for stars Courtney B. Vance, Sterling K. Brown and Sarah Paulson.

“Obama out, Hillary in,” Vance said as he wrapped his victory speech.

Regina King claimed the award for supporting actress in a limited series for “American Crime,” her second trophy for the program.

Huskie fans gather to celebrate football team’s home opener

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – The smell of bratwurst and hot dogs filled the air Saturday around Northern Illinois University’s Huskie Stadium as students, alumni and local fans gathered to celebrate the 2016 football season-opening home game against San Diego State University.

Before the 2:30 p.m. kickoff, the grounds around the stadium were packed with red and black-clad tailgaters who were gearing up to cheer on their team.

The Huskies were 0-2 coming into Saturday’s game, but that didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the fans. Longtime Sycamore resident Jim Buck has been coming to home games for many years. The season-ticket holder said it is nice to be able to go to a Division I game so close to home.

“It’s too bad more local people don’t take advantage of it,” he said. “The Huskies have done well, and I hope they continue to do well. The games are always a great time.”

Linda Sietsema, a Sycamore resident and NIU graduate student in nursing, goes to all home games and travels to many away games. She believes it is important for NIU students, as well as the community, to support student-athletes.

“These kids come from all over the country, and DeKalb is their home away from home, and we should support our local team,” she said.

Carl Valerius of Sycamore, who graduated from NIU in 1989 with a bachelor’s degree in finance, was very excited for football season to start in DeKalb. He said he loves to tailgate before each game to have fun with friends while celebrating the team.

“I’m a big NIU supporter, and this is such a good time, especially when the weather is like this,” Valerius said of Saturday’s sunny skies and light breeze.

Don Pardridge of Shabbona, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree from NIU in 1967, has been a season ticket holder and big fan for many years. He and his wife try to attend every home game and some away games.

“We’re big sports fans, and it’s important to support the university because it adds to the vitality of the community,” he said. “[The team] has had so many good years, and I hope they

stay on top of the MAC West.”

Steve Rumentz traveled to DeKalb from his home in northern Virginia for the season opener. The proud alum said he comes to NIU for several games each year.

“It’s important to support NIU, and I like to see my friends and family,” he said. “I loved my time here. It was the best four years of my life, and I’m proud of my degree and my school.”

Jeffrey Hohn of Rockford has been coming to all home games for about 10 years. The season-ticket holder said he enjoys tailgating because he can mingle with other NIU fans.

“Rockford is a football town, and

this is good football that’s close to home,” he said. “San Diego State is a good team, and a good home-opening opponent.”

Scott Racz, an NIU alum who lives in Chicago, hopes that the NIU football program can continue to grow and provide entertaining games.

“I always expect the Huskies to win.

It’s unfortunate that [starting quarterback] Drew Hare got hurt, but our backup [redshirt sophomore Ryan Graham] is just as good,” he said. “This is just a good time and a great social event. I love to see my college friends.”

team continues to build on its recent success.

“I’m a big fan, and NIU needs fan support to create an even better program,” he said. “My expectations have been higher in other seasons, but I’m hopeful. I’ll always come to all the home games.”

Andre Taylor of Chicago played for the Huskies from 1981 to1985. The former defensive back played under NIU coach Bill Mallory, and he continues to attend home games to support his team.

“This program has really taken off since I’ve been here, which is good because it brings money and exposure to the school,” said Taylor,whose 19-yearold son, A.J., is to play for the Huskies next season. “We just need to get back on a winning track. We need to put in a better effort.”

Matt Wittrup of Sycamore, a 2011 NIU alum, hopes that the team plays hard and does everything it can to win.

“I’m a die-hard Huskie fan and come to pretty much every home game,” he said. “NIU is one of the largest employers in the area, and it adds a lot to the local economy. It’s a big part of our community, and it’s important to support.”

Unfortunately for the excited fans, the Huskies fell to San Diego State, 4228.

Phillips talks safety with NIU students

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Northern Illinois University Police Chief Tom Phillips said his department is working to involve more people in campus safety with community-oriented policing strategies, including a Neighborhood Watch, a student patrol effort and a citizen police academy.

Phillips spent an hour in an amicable exchange with students last week as the first speaker for the fall semester at the Huskies Ethical Awareness Talks.

The Barsema Hall auditorium was filled with 130 students, several of whom had questions about campus safety and policing issues.

Phillips first introduced himself with a summary of his background in policing, coming here from the University of Illinois-Chicago campus police department three years ago, after the previous NIU chief, Donald Grady, had been fired and the department somewhat demoralized with allegations of misconduct.

Phillips said he has a son enrolled at NIU and that he, himself, is a recent graduate, earning a master’s degree in public administration. He added that “my family lives here, so I have a personal interest in keeping the place safe.”

Asked about training for emergencies and how they are prepared to deal with them, he spoke of two simulated exercises he had coordinated in the past two years involving all police, fire and EMS personal in the region to scrimmage and prepare for any crisis.

In 2014, they focused on handling an active-shooter scenario, and in 2015 practiced dealing with a bomb – both conducted during summer break when students were not on campus. He said it was the largest full-scale emergency exercise in the state.

Responding to a question about his relationship with DeKalb’s city police, he said there has been little conflict since he arrived.

“We have a ‘co-policing’ program where we not only patrol the campus, but in the neighborhoods nearby,” Phillips said. “… I have had an excellent working relationship with DeKalb Police Chief (Gene) Lowery and work in a support role with them off campus, since that is their primary jurisdiction.”

He added that they look at crime data for the area where there are patterns of crime, such as robberies. On campus, Phillips said he is initiating

a Neighborhood Watch program in the residence halls, has a Huskie Student Patrol that operates at night to do such tasks as help students get to their cars safely, and has held the first Citizen Police Academy, showing students, staff and faculty firsthand how campus police operate.

Regarding mental health problems that police increasingly face nationwide, his department has been sending officers to crisis intervention training so they can better deal with disturbed

or suicidal people. They also assist students in getting counseling or hospitalization when needed.

Outlining the breakdown in types of campus crimes, Phillips said 70 to 80 percent are property crimes “where, for example, someone rips off your laptop.”

The other 20 to 30 percent are crimes against a person such as battery, sexual assaults and other altercations.

Talking about budget cuts by the state, he said every part of the university, as well as communities, have felt their impact. When he is able, he said, he would like to replace the Toyota Prius hybrid patrol cars with other vehicles, which generated a laugh among the students.

The small vehicles “don’t do too good going through snow,” he said. He answered another query about how they are equipped and said they have similar equipment to the city police to

deal with any situation.

He mentioned that they have two bomb-sniffing dogs, but none for drugs, as well as paramedics on duty around the clock. He hopes to maintain the 24-hour-seven-day-a-week 911 dispatch center, but further budget cuts could jeopardize that.

Asked after the meeting about the community’s perception that much of the local crime comes from outsiders visiting students on campus and in town, he said he has heard about that but “found no statistics to back that up.”

He did add that “we are just south of Rockford and west of Aurora,” so that could be a factor.

“We are an open campus, and I look at the greater campus community, working with DeKalb police with the mutual understanding that if any crime happens in DeKalb, we respond the same whether on or off campus.”

C.-T. PAN C.-T. Pan, age 76, of DeKalb, IL, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2016 in his home.

Born in Chongqing, China, to Y.C. Pan and Qian Z., he grew up in Shanghai, attending Shanghai High School. He received a BA in mathematics from Anhui Normal University; an MA in mathematics from California State University, Fresno; and a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from North Carolina State University. In 1987, he moved to DeKalb to work as a professor in Northern Illinois University’s Department of Mathematical Sciences.

He is survived by his wife, Gu-Nong; daughter, Wei-Wei; and son, William.

A memorial will be held Wednesday, 8 p.m., at Baptist Campus Ministry, 449 Normal Road, DeKalb.

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKalb County officials are reminding residents about regulations for leaf burning as fall approaches.

In large parts of unincorporated DeKalb County, there are no regulations that restrict the burning of leaves and other yard waste on private property. However, many local municipalities have regulations that restrict or prohibit burning on properties within the corporate limits. Also, state law prohibits burning on any unincorporated property

that is within 1,000 feet of a municipality that bans such fires, according to a news release from DeKalb County.

According to a safety bulletin from Northern Illinois University police, the incident occurred about 11:20 p.m. Police said the suspect was last seen fleeing west on a dark-colored bicycle.

Police said the suspect was described as male, dark-skinned, of average height with a dark-blue hat, white shirt dark jacket and blue shoes.

No one was injured in the incident, police said.

40 years, and the stand itself has a long history in Sycamore dating to 1893, when it was drawn around town by horse.

Cassie Oltman and her husband have been running the stand since 2011.

Both owners were born and raised in Sycamore and said they want to bring a pleasant, country atmosphere with their new restaurant.

“There’s not a lot of breakfast and lunch places downtown where you

can sit outside to have a cup of coffee,” Troy Oltman said. “We have a pretty big following already, and everyone in town seems to be excited.”

Cassie Oltman said they are going for a basic menu with plenty of homemade items such as biscuits and gravy, pancakes and sandwiches. Cakes, cookies, ice cream and other desserts also will be served.

SYCAMORE – The owners of Cassie’s Popcorn Stand are renovating a property into a café to add to their family business.

The popcorn stand will remain at 200 W. State St. in Sycamore, where it has been since 1923, while Cassie’s Corn Crib Café will offer a breakfast and lunch menu down the street at 124 S. Maple St. The café also will sell Cassie’s Popcorn year-round, whereas the stand is open for the summer and select times during the holiday season.

Troy Oltman, 55, and wife Cassie, 51, got their building permit in July and plan to be open for business in May or June 2017.

Troy Oltman said he is the contractor for the building and will be doing most of the construction. He said the building has been vacant for about eight years.

“The building needs everything,” he said. “It has no water, no heat, no floors. It’s a shell, so it’s going to take a while to build it up.”

Cassie Oltman said Cassie’s Popcorn has been in her family for almost

the “Sycamore style” blend of caramel and cheese, cotton candy flavored popcorn, kettle corn, and regular or caramel popcorn balls.

The café will feature all of these as well as new flavors to try.

Cassie Oltman said the café will seat about 30 people, and it will feature a “retail nook” with unique, handcrafted items for sale. This could include anything from wine racks to knick-knacks.

She said her husband will make some of these items, and they will seek others from community members.

Troy Oltman said family members will be running the café at first, but they hope to be able to hire other employees in time.

“We’re still a little nervous,” he said. “I think it’ll flow once we get going, but it will be a learning curve.”

Troy Oltman has operated his own machine and welding business for the past 23 years, and Cassie Oltman has been a full-time bus driver for 29 years.

Both said they eventually would like to have the family business as their primary source of income.

“Hopefully, this is what we are going to do for the rest of our lives,” Troy Oltman said.

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Illinois schools are required now to limit long-term suspensions and expulsions under a new law that also eliminates the use of zero-tolerance policies used to severely punish students for certain offenses.

The law, which took effect last week, is designed to reduce the number of days that students are pulled from classrooms and encourage school administrators to use suspensions as a last resort.

“So it becomes a school system that says, ‘What can we do to keep this student in an academic setting?’ ” said Sen. Kimberly Lightford, a Chicago Democrat who sponsored the legislation.

Illinois lawmakers passed the bill with overwhelming support last year.

States have been rethinking the zero-tolerance policies that gained prominence following the mass shooting at Colorado’s Columbine High School in 1999.

Colorado and North Carolina eliminated zero-tolerance policies in 2011.

All Chicago patrol officers to wear body cams by 2018

CHICAGO – Chicago police announced Sunday that they will expand the use of body cameras to include all officers on patrol by 2018.

The numbers of body cameras will increase by several thousand within the next two years so every officer on patrol has access to the wallet-size cameras, Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said.

Johnson said their use should improve accountability and help build community trust.

The department launched its body-cam pilot program in 2015, and it currently includes seven of 22 city police districts. Expanding it to the other districts will cost around $8 million, money that will come from the depart-

The new Illinois law requires schools to suspend students more than three days only in cases where they pose a threat to the school, and all other disciplinary options – including counseling them or involving them in after-school programs – have been exhausted. The law says schools also will need to explain their rationale for expelling someone.

“I think it’s going to allow some better communication between the parents and the teachers and the staff,” said Joe Burgess, superintendent of the Genoa-Kingston School District.

Jennifer Gill, superintendent of Springfield Public Schools, said the district has spent the last year training and informing teachers, security guards, nurses and other staff in preparation of the law. She said the state gave the schools no additional funding

School suspensions have decreased the last two years, but there still are racial disparities, according to figures from the Illinois State Board of Education.

During the 2015 school year, more than 296,400 students were suspended, down from nearly 340,000 in 2014.

Suspensions longer than 10 days also decreased, from nearly 1,200 in 2014 to just more than 650 in 2015.

Students were suspended for fighting, using drugs and having dangerous weapons, but most were placed in the “other” category, which the school board data do not explain.

Black students are far more likely to be suspended than their peers, a trend that has persisted since 2009, when an Associated Press analysis found that more than half of all children suspended from Illinois public schools were black, even though they represented less than one-fifth of enrollment.

The percentage of black students being suspended has decreased only slightly since 2009. They made up nearly 45 percent of the suspensions in 2014, and just over 47 percent in 2015.

The statue spent a year and a half wrapped in a green protective mesh around scaffolding that was erected in December 2014. The material came down in June.

Autopsies set for 4 found in Rockford home after fire

ROCKFORD – Autopsies are planned in the deaths of four people, including three children, whose bodies were found in a Rockford home destroyed by a weekend fire.

The Rockford Register Star said they Winnebago County Coroner’s Office will complete the autopsies Monday to determine whether the fire or something else caused the deaths.

The coroner’s office said the victims included a 27-year-old, a 9-year-old, a 6-year-old and a 6-month-old.

The newspaper said firefighters responded to the blaze in a single-family home around 5 a.m. Saturday. Fire department officials said the house was already engulfed in flames by the

time they arrived.

2016 Illinois State Fair attendance down; weather cited

SPRINGFIELD – Officials said attendance at the 2016 Illinois State Fair fell by around 13 percent compared with attendance numbers last year.

The State Journal-Register reported that officials blamed flooding in the area, the heat and a power outage for the decline in attendance for the 11-day event in August. Total attendance from Aug. 11 to 21 was more than 357,000. About 411,000-plus attended last year.

At the same time, fair officials said, they are happy that revenue figures were similar to those of previous years.

A report on the state fair numbers indicated that about 7.75 inches of rain fell during the fair, including 5.59 inches on Aug. 12.

Fair Manager Kevin Gordon said staff “battled obstacles at every turn,” including triple-digit heat indices.

FBI investigates stabbings in Minn. as possible terror act

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – A man in a private security uniform stabbed nine people at a Minnesota shopping mall, reportedly asking one victim if he or she was Muslim, before an off-duty police officer shot and killed him in an attack the Islamic State group claimed as its own.

None of the nine people who were stabbed in Saturday night’s attack received life-threatening wounds, St. Cloud police Chief Blair Anderson said. He said it doesn’t appear that anyone else was involved in the attack at the Crossroads Center in St. Cloud, which began at around 8 p.m. and was over within minutes.

At a news conference Sunday, FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Rick Thornton said the attack was being investigated as a possible act of terrorism and that agents still were digging into the attacker’s background and possible motives. Authorities were looking at social media accounts and the attacker’s electronic devices, and talking to his associates, Thornton said.

An Islamic State-run news agency, Rasd, claimed Sunday that the attacker was a “soldier of the Islamic State” who had heeded the group’s calls for attacks in countries that are part of a U.S.-led anti-IS coalition.

It was not immediately clear if the extremist group had planned the attack or even knew about it beforehand. IS has encouraged socalled “lone wolf” attacks. It has also claimed past attacks that are not believed to have been planned by its central leadership.

Authorities didn’t identify the attacker, but the Star Tribune of Minneapolis said the man’s father identified him as Dahir A. Adan, 22. Speaking to the newspaper through an in-

terpreter, Ahmed Adan, whose family is Somali, said his son was born in Africa and had lived in the U.S. for 15 years.

A spokesman for St. Cloud State University confirmed that Adan was a student there, but has not been enrolled since the spring semester. Spokesman Adam Hammer said Adan’s intended major was information systems, which is a computer-related field.

Ahmed Adan said police told him around 9 p.m. Saturday that his son had died at the mall, and that police had raided the family’s apartment, seizing photos and other materials. He said police said nothing to him about the mall attack, and that he had “no suspicion” that his son had been involved in terrorist activity, the newspaper reported.

Anderson said police had had three previous encounters with the attacker, mostly for minor traffic violations.

Anderson said the attacker, dressed in a security uniform and wielding what appeared to be a kitchen knife, began attacking people right after entering the mall, stabbing people in several spots inside the building, including corridors, businesses and common areas.

Five minutes after authorities received the first 911 call, Jason Falconer, a part-time officer in the city of Avon, shot and killed the attacker. Anderson said Falconer fired as the attacker was lunging at him with the knife, and continued to engage him as the attacker got up three times.

“He clearly prevented additional injuries and potential loss of life,” Anderson said. “Officer Falconer was there at the right time and the right place,” he said.

Anderson earlier said the man reportedly made at least one reference to Allah and asked a victim if he or she was Muslim before attacking them.

Illinois State Fair needs a boost to help it continue A corn dog and a lemon shake-up. A few thrill rides or maybe a leisurely trip on the Sky Glider. Getting up close and personal with farm animals – and, of course, a swing by the Dairy Building to check out the butter cow.

There are many nostalgic pleasures associated with the Illinois State Fair – but the venerable tradition appears to need a modern shot in the arm.

Total attendance from Aug. 11 to Aug. 21 was more than 357,000 – about 13 under the more than 411,000 last year.

Fair officials probably weren’t looking forward to seeing those numbers. Many vendors reported that their sales were down 50 percent or more. Anecdotally, most people who attended the fair would probably agree with our observation that crowds seemed more sparse than in the past, even on nice days.

What’s to blame? A triple-digit heat index kept some away from the Twilight Parade and preview night, but the fair also charged admission that night, a departure from previous years.

More than 5 inches of record-setting rain pummeled the fairgrounds on the first Friday night, causing widespread flooding and forcing the cancellation of the Pat Benatar and Melissa Etheridge concert. More rain fell Monday, and a lesser amount again on the last Saturday. But even so, the bulk of the fair featured sunny weather.

This year, officials raised the adult admission from $7 to $10, while cutting the price for kids.

The state has to face the reality that the state fair now is merely one of many entertainment and recreation options competing for customers’ business.

Spokeswoman Rebecca Clark acknowledged that the fair currently does not survey attendees about what they liked or disliked, although she noted that it gets “instant feedback from fairgoers via Facebook and Twitter.” It also hasn’t done a survey of where its customers live. There is some data from the location of people who bought carnival ride MegaPasses or downloaded the fair’s smartphone app, but that’s imperfect information.

The state fair may be a revered tradition, but that alone won’t get customers’ time and money. It has to fight the perception it hasn’t evolved, but it needs good information to know what activities to add.

Surely, it can’t be that hard in this digital era to log admission tickets electronically, allowing for much more rapid information on attendance trends. A quick question as people pay about their ZIP code would yield good data, without adding much time to the entry process.

Finally, the state needs to take a hard profit-loss look at the Du Quoin State Fair to see if it can continue to justify its existence in this era of lean budgets.

Traditions such as butter cows and battered, deep-fried everything may be beloved, but the state fair can’t rely on tradition to keep customers coming back.

Trump’s popularity can’t be blamed on economy For months now, we’ve heard about an angry and anxious electorate, depressed by stagnant wages, furious about a “rigged” economic system, uncertain about the future for their children and grandchildren.

That analysis supposedly explained Bernie Sanders’ surprisingly strong showing in the Democratic primaries, as well as Donald Trump’s stunning takeover of the Republican Party.

But it turns out that the economy isn’t quite as “rigged” against the hard-working middle class as we’ve been led to believe. New economic data show some excellent news: Last year, middle-class and poor Americans enjoyed the best economic growth they’ve had in decades.

According to the Census Bureau, real median household income was $56,500 in 2015, up from $53,700 in 2014. That was the largest percentage increase recorded by the bureau since it began tracking median income statistics in the 1960s.

There was also good news for poor households: The poverty rate fell by 1.2 percentage points. While that may not seem like much, it was still the steepest decline since 1968 and represented 3.5 million fewer people in poverty.

The new economic data suggest that many of the explanations (including my own) offered for this strange election season have been, well, wrong. Allow me to turn the

More than anything else, Trump’s rise is the manifestation of the anger of a significant minority of white voters over their loss of demographic and cultural hegemony. They’ve seen the new America, represented most dramatically by Barack Obama, and they’re not happy about it.

That’s not to say a stagnant economy hasn’t provided fuel for those racialist fires. It has. Some households are yet trying to climb out of the wreckage of the collapse of 2008, when pink slips were issued, savings accounts disappeared and homes were lost.

That said, the average Trump supporter isn’t faring so badly. According to FiveThirtyEight, Nate Silver’s website, Trump’s voters are better off than most Americans. The median household income of a Trump voter in the primaries was about $72,000, based on estimates derived from exit polls and Census Bureau data. That’s higher than the median income for Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders supporters, which is around $61,000 for both.

The foundation for his rise was laid by the tea partiers, who rose up in fierce resistance to President Obama immediately after he took office. They, too, were better off than the average American, polls showed.

But their rhetoric was full of racial resentment and xenophobia.

Many of them were waiting restlessly for a candidate – for a flag-bearer – who would give voice to their claims to own patriotism and to being the real Americans. The tea partiers often held aloft signs that proclaimed their desire to “take our country back.” Trump’s promise to “make America great again” is only slightly less suggestive of racial resentments.

While Hillary Clinton has apologized for characterizing half of Trump’s supporters as fitting comfortably in a “basket of deplorables” – defined by their own “racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic” tendencies – she wasn’t far off.

Just take a look, again, at the polling data: Trump’s supporters tend to have more negative attitudes toward black Americans than the general electorate, believing us to be lazy, violent and unintelligent. Trump backers tend to have more negative views toward immigrants and Muslim Americans than the electorate as a whole.

But here’s my personal favorite: A whopping 59 percent of Trump’s voters believe the president was not born in the United States, a view that Trump widely disseminated (before briefly admitting Friday it was not true). That wasn’t a dog whistle; it was a full-throated battle cry of racist resentment, a way of trying to delegitimize the first black president.

If this were a more conventional election season, the improving economy would have calmed the electorate and Trump would be nowhere near the finish line. Instead, he has moved uncomfortably close to Clinton, with some polls showing a dead heat.

But Trump isn’t really offering better financial prospects to a disaffected middle class. He’s offering to restore white privilege. And that thinly veiled pledge is enough for many of his voters.

For the first time in seven years, Illinois schools will start off the year with full funding, a major victory of the stopgap budget signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner this summer. While I consider this a success for our schools, I also know we have just scratched the surface of Illinois reform and must shift our focus to growing the economy and creating jobs.

ing . In response, the governor established the Illinois School Funding Reform Commission. As a member, I believe this bipartisan effort is what is required to fix our broken school funding system.

With the help of prominent stakeholders in the education community, we are tasked with developing a new school funding formula that will ensure every student in Illinois has access to a quality education. The commission’s deadline to present our recommendation is February 2017, and we are working urgently to meet this goal.

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, and it is open to the public.

However, the need for comprehensive reform extends from our schools to many other areas. The state of Illinois is fiscally unstable, and it will continue to be until we pass a balanced full-year budget and the necessary structural reforms that will improve our state economy and create jobs.

We’ve recently seen how the need for reform impacts our rights and the public’s voice in the democratic process.

The Fair Map Amendment, a proposed referendum to allow voters to choose how legislative districts are drawn, was recently rejected by the Illinois Supreme Court. As Justice Bob Thomas expressed, the Constitution was written to protect voters’ right to choose their

representatives, not the other way around.

If lawmakers and the governor are to initiate positive change for the people of Illinois, the same spirit of bipartisanship we saw in June will be crucial in the coming months. I know that my Republican colleagues, as well as my colleagues from across the aisle, can come together in support of real, lasting solutions to reform our state.

My hope is that the stopgap budget is just the first example of the achievements that can be made when lawmakers cast aside politics and work together.

Jeff Marshall will give a presentation on DeKalb barbed wire pioneer Jacob Haish at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Glidden Homestead and Historical Center in DeKalb. Haish is renowned for his “S barb” patented in 1875.

Marshall is a DeKalb native and a Glidden Homestead board member. He is a Haish relation and one of the foremost authorities on Jacob Haish. He maintains a website devoted to Haish, called “Jacob Haish Mfg. Co.,” that preserves the history of Jacob Haish’s company and his many contributions to society.

Haish was born March 9, 1827, in Germany, and came to America in 1835 when he was 9 years old. In his youth, he learned the carpentry trade from his father and “possessed natural mechanical ingenuity and displayed ready aptitude in the use of tools.”

DeKalb Area Retirement Center – Oak Crest will host its sixth annual art and craft fest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Local artists and crafters have reserved booths to share their talents. Residents and volunteers have been working all year to make a variety of craft items.

There will be holiday decorations, knitted hats and scarves, quilted items, jewelry, baby bibs and blankets, soft toys, glass sculptures, wooden crafts, floral

arrangements and many miscellaneous items.

A bake sale is planned by volunteers with a variety of goodies for all to enjoy, including applesauce donuts.

There also will be a number of raffle items. This year’s items include a Raggedy Ann doll and a quilt.

5K walk supports local cancer center DAILY CHRONICLE The Sycamore Angels Rebekah Lodge 106 will host its seventh annual 5K Walk With the Angels on Oct. 1.

This event is to raise breast cancer awareness and promote the importance of early detection. Proceeds benefit the KishHealth System Cancer Center and Hospice of DeKalb County.

The walk begins and ends at the OddFellows-Rebekah Lodge, 131 Sabin St. in Sycamore. Doors open at 9 a.m. and the walk begins at 10:30 a.m.

The turnaround point is at the lake at Rotary Park, on North Cross Street, where walkers can take a break and enjoy the

fall scenery.

Water, fresh fruit and granola bars will be provided.

Community forum set on ‘twin’ tar sands pipeline DAILY CHRONICLE A tar sands pipeline runs through DeKalb County just west of the Northern Illinois University campus. Now Enbridge, the Canadian company that owns it, is considering a “twin” pipeline that would run parallel to the existing line.

Learn more at a Community Forum at 7 p.m. Thursday at the DeKalb Public Library, 309 Oak St. in DeKalb.

A panel of presenters will discuss pipeline expansion plans that are expected to affect the area.

Panelists will share the experiences of landowners and community members in Wisconsin, where efforts to gain easements from landowners has already begun. Landowners and commu-

The Kishwaukee Sunrise Rotary Club will conduct its annual drive-up dinner fundraiser on Wednesday.

Money raised through this event will be used to fund various charitable efforts throughout the community. Some examples of past uses of the funds include scholarships to underserved DeKalb and Sycamore high school students, a computer center for the DeKalb County Senior Center, and donations to organizations such as The Salvation Army, United Way and Adventure Works.

The meal will be catered by Sycamore County Store and Catering and include barbecue chicken and a pork chop, along with side dishes.

DeKALB – The San Diego State football team dominated the battle for starting real estate.

The Northern Illinois offense consistently faced long fields, while the Aztecs frequently started around midfield or better and built a big lead early in the Huskies’ 42-28 loss in the home opener on Saturday at Huskie Stadium.

During the entire game, the Aztecs started on their own 47-yard line or better six times – scoring touchdowns on three of those drives. By contrast, the Huskies started inside their own 6-yard line on four occasions, never starting better than their own 46 on the day.

“I give their punter a lot of credit and their punt team,” Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey said. “Everytime we got a stop at midfield, it felt like they put it inside the 5. It was a big determining factor. We had long fields and a ways to go. I thought they won the field position battle.”

The Aztecs, who are the reigning Mountain West Conference champions and have the second-longest active FBS winning streak with 13 victories, had three possessions start in NIU territory in the first half. They scored touchdowns on all three drives.

The last one was capped with a 33yard touchdown pass from Christian Chapman to Mikah Holder that put the Aztecs ahead 28-0 with 6:19 left in the second quarter.

“They’re a fantastic football team and today they jumped on us early,” Carey said. “I thought we fought back, had our opportunities there – but in the end, you give a good team a start like that and they executed a little bit better than us today.”

San Diego State’s running back Donnel Pumphrey was the clear star of the game, racking up 220 yards on 23 carries (9.6 per attempt) and three touchdowns – including a 79-yarder in the fourth quarter that capped the scoring. The all-time leading rusher in San Diego State history, Pumphrey also rushed for 281 yards in the Aztecs’ win over California in Week 2 and put together his fourth 200-plus yard game of his career.

However, the Aztecs only outgained the Huskies 404-376 on offense during the game – partly a credit to their good field position.

The average starting field position for the Aztecs was their own 43-yard line, while the Huskies averaged a start on their own 23.

They went three-and-out on the first, simply took a knee before halftime on the second, gained 18 yards before punting on the third and got to near midfield before turning it over on downs on their final drive of the game.

“No matter where we start, our mentality is if we start on the 5, we’re going to take it 95 yards, really,” said Northern Illinois wide receiver Kenny Golladay, who had a rushing touchdown and also had six catches for 80 yards and a score. “We just have to go out there and execute the plays.”

While both teams struggled with penalties on the day – San Diego State

had 11 for 107 yards and the Huskies had eight for 103 – Northern Illinois didn’t do itself any favors with field position with several unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.

With the Aztecs leading 28-21 late in the third quarter, NIU linebacker Bobby Jones came up with a critical stop on a San Diego State third down, tackling running back Rashaad Penny on the SDSU 34 yard line. However, Jones was called for a taunting penalty while celebrating and while the Aztecs didn’t get any points out of the extended drive, they were able to pin NIU down on its own 6 with a punt.

“When you have those things, the rules are the rules in the game and that’s how they are,” Carey said about the unsportsmanlike penalties. “I think sometimes refs have to make calls on what the rule says. I’m not say-

ing they’re right or they’re not right.

I’m just saying they are what they are.

It’s part of the game you have to play with and you can’t change them.”

The Huskies were called for six unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, although one was off-set by a San Diego State personal foul penalty. Northern Illinois defensive end Joe Sanders was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the first drive of the game, after he was called for targeting on a sack on Chapman and was ejected.

“If it’s not for penalties, I think the score’s a lot different for both sides now,” San Diego State coach Rocky Long said. “I think both sides got aided. Both teams got aided tremendously by penalties.”

Just when Huskies are ready to be written off, something happens to offer a glimmer of hope

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Down four touchdowns early, it seemed the Northern Illinois football team was headed on the path to another huge defeat and a 0-3 start.

Well, the 0-3 start did come to fruition. But it was anything but a blowout, as the Huskies had the ball down a touchdown at one point, but ended up falling, 42-28, in their home opener to San Diego State on Saturday at Huskie Stadium.

NIU lost big at South Florida, 48-17, last week after losing their season opener in Wyoming, 40-34, in triple overtime in a game that is sure to haunt the dreams of Huskies fans for awhile – quite literally, as it didn’t end until 3:30 a.m. here in DeKalb.

The list of flaws for this team is, at this point, incredibly long. The defense has not given up less than 40 points in a game, and Donnel Pumphrey ran rough shot over the defense Saturday with scoring runs of 46, 33 and 79 yards in a 220-yard game.

NIU quarterback Ryan Graham has looked uneven in taking over the

But when it comes down to it, these games are virtually meaningless.

It’s the six straight Mid-American Conference titles that matter. So the question becomes, can the mistakes of the first three weeks be corrected by the time the conference opener rolls around at Ball State in two weeks?

Coach Rod Carey said he likes the effort of the team, and thinks that means mistakes can be corrected moving forward.

“I love the effort that our guys played with today, and I won’t apologize for any bit of that,” he said.

“I thought they put their hearts out there and would not quit. The things that need to be fixed, when you do that – with that great effort – you can

fix them.”

Bobby Jones – the standout of the defense Saturday with 15 tackles, two for a loss and a sack – said basically the same thing, subbing out the word effort for energy.

“I think we have to come out with the same energy next week,” Jones said. “That’s a good sign and just continue to get better and clean up the mistakes we see on film.”

The Huskies played well enough during the comeback attempt to make you want to believe them. The Aztecs and Bulls are no slouches – although that loss to the Cowboys seems as if it will sting for whole year – and NIU played well for stretches against SDSU. It doesn’t seem likely the run game will struggle as it has this year. The Huskies don’t have a 100-yard performance by a back in a game this year, and it took until Saturday for anyone to eclipse the century mark for the season. One of those 100-yard rushers is Kenny Galladay, who also has more than 100 receiving yards than the next closest Huskie.

But there’s that defense again. The

lowest amount of points they’ve surrendered this year is 40 to the Cowboys in Week 1. Maybe it’s optimistic thinking, but the Huskies won’t allow 40 points in every game. Bouagnon will go back to his old self – or, at least, Jordan Huff will emerge in a big role. Lurry will stop dropping interceptions and picking up penalties.

The offense, although definitely not pretty, put up 28 in its first full game this year under Graham. Again, there’s no reason to think the Huskies and Graham will not continue to improve as he gains more of a rhythm. Especially with a player such as Golladay out there.

This isn’t to say they’ll run the table in the MAC. In fact, it might be another ugly MAC West title like last year.

The point is nothing – no matter how good or how bad – is out of the realm of possibility given how we’ve seen this team perform.

MLB ERA leader Hendricks loses The Associated Press

CHICAGO – Major league ERA leader Kyle Hendricks allowed two runs in six innings and remained stuck on 15 victories as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cubs, 3-1, Sunday.

Tyler Thornburg struck out Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo with two on in the ninth to earn his 11th save in 16 chances.

The NL Central champion Cubs have lost four of six and are trying to secure home-field advantage in the playoffs.

They resumed playing their regulars after clinching the division Thursday.

Chris Carter homered and Martin Maldonado and pitcher Wily Peralta (710) added RBI singles for the Brewers, who took three of four games from the Cubs. Milwaukee slugger Ryan Braun got a scheduled day off after hitting two home runs Saturday.

Hendricks (15-8), making his first start since losing a no-hit bid in the ninth inning at St. Louis, struck out nine and gave up six hits. His ERA rose from 2.03 to 2.06 as he lost for the first time since July 26 at the White Sox. Hendricks hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in a home start since April 15 against Colorado. In each of his last 21 starts, he has surrendered three or fewer earned runs.

The overall consensus from many runners, coaches and parents was that the Larry Eddington Invitational was one of the largest and best meets of the season. The course was constructed on the campus at Kaneland High School.

It was a three-mile course that featured many different types of terrain.

“Our maintenance crew did just a phenomenal job getting this course ready,” Kaneland coach Chad Cleary said. “Taping off the track, cutting the grass low and lining it really well – those guys are the true heroes of the day. We’re used to being at Elburn Woods and it was hard for us to let go of that location. But, they have certainly made this place very race worthy.”

“We only ran one runner in the varsity meet,” DeKalb coach Mike Wolf said. “This meet is so great because it has a frosh/soph division. It is nice for the freshman and sophomore girls that are stronger to be able to compete at their own level. Traditionally, we keep those stronger underclassmen down through this meet and if they are running well enough, we move them to varsity.”

Sycamore coach Mike Lambidn said that also caused his team to maybe place a little lower than it normally would.

“I think our finish today shows how deep we are,” Sycamore coach Michael Lambdin said. “We dropped a few of our freshman and sophomore runners from varsity into the frosh/soph race

Double challenge: The third inning included a 4-minute, 25-second review that had both managers making a challenge on the same play. Ned Yost of the Royals claimed shortstop Tim Anderson did not touch second base before throwing to first on Hosmer’s grounder. Sox manager Robin Ventura challenged that Orlando slid out of the base path. After the review, the call on the field was overturned with Orlando ruled safe and the slide was legal.

MAPLE PARK – The Richtman family had a strong showing at the Eddington Invitational cross country meet on Saturday.

Matthew, the middle child who is a junior at Kaneland, won the boys varsity race. His time of 15:17.0 seconds was a personal best for him on his home course. Freshman, and youngest of the three Rachel, took third place in the girls varsity meet with a time of 18:14.9. Becca, a senior and the oldest Richtman at Kaneland, took 30th overall, clocking in at 19.59.9.

“Every year, we try to defend our home course,” Matthew Richtman said. “This meet really boosted us as a team and me as an individual.We finished as a pack again and this can propel us as we get ready for sectionals.”

In the girls varsity meet, Kaneland was able to take fourth place out of 15 teams that scored. There were seven teams that did not score as a team.

DeKalb and Sycamore were included in those teams.

The Sycamore boys team was able to take fourth in their varsity meet.

Junior Stephen Poorten was fifth overall, running the course in 15:32.6.

For Rachel Richtman, it was a return to the action after missing some time with an injury.

“I didn’t run for a week before this meet,” Rachel RIchtman said. “I rolled my ankle a while back and I have been staying off of it. I was just really excited to get out and run again today. I tested it Friday and it didn’t hurt. I ran in the varsity meet so I could run with my sister.”

Cutler, offense aware of Eagles’ strength in middle of defense

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com LAKE FOREST – The Eagles are strong in the middle of their defense, starting with defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, but it goes back to veteran safeties Malcolm Jenkins and Rodney McLeod, who could offset any questions about Philadelphia’s corners.

“Really good safeties,” said Jay Cutler. “I think you look down the middle of that defense, that is kind of their strength and you get up to the safeties, veteran guys. They understand football. They are able to play the box. They are able to get off the hash. They play the ball well in the air. That’s kind of their strength in the secondary and one of the strengths of the team on defense.”

Jenkins is in his eighth NFL season but only 28 years old. Starting every game last season, he had 109 tackles, 10 passes defensed and two interceptions.

McLeod, 26, signed a five-year, $37 million contract with the Eagles in

the offseason after three consecutive seasons starting every game for the Rams. He had an interception last week of Robert Griffin III, though that was the only pass defensed recorded for the Eagles’ secondary in Week One. “Those guys quarterback the defense,” said Bears offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains. “They’re smart and you have to make sure what they’re doing and where they’re lined up because they can be a big problem for you.”

With starting corner Leodis McKelvin injured, the Eagles are set to start seventh-rounder Jalen Mills at corner opposite Nolan Carroll, making the boundary an area where the Bears can attack with Alshon Jeffery and Kevin White. Look for the Eagles to try to funnel things to the middle to their playmakers, Jenkins and McLeod, just like they do up front.

Those center-field DBs could also pose a challenge for Zach Miller, who had only 14 yards receiving in part due to how the Texans used their safe-

ties on him, Loggains said.

Finding the RB waves: The Bears were 2-for-8 on third down in the second half in Houston, which kept them from sustaining drives, and it kept running backs Ka’Deem Carey and Jordan Howard on the sideline.

Loggains said that kept the Bears from an extra seven or eight runs “and then all of a sudden the rotation of the running backs gets cut because now [Jeremy] Langford’s playing more because he is the best in pass protection,” Loggains explained, adding that “the plan doesn’t get executed the way you want.”

We could also see more from the backs in the passing game, too, as John Fox said the screen game “needs work.” They did run a 19-yard play on a screen against Houston that was called back due to offensive pass interference. Loggains said the added continuity on the O-line will help improve that part of the offense, one that takes advantage of the athletic offensive linemen the Bears have compiled this offseason.

Cox has the strength and speed off the snap to get into the backfield, giving the Eagles an interior pass rush. He had a sack last week against the Browns and 9.5 sacks last season, which helped earn him a massive $100 million contract.

Cox has great athleticism for his size, and he’ll challenge Long, a formidable athlete in his own right, who is playing the season through a shoulder injury. Long was effective against the Texans last week, especially on Jeremy Langford’s touchdown plunge. He has the right tools to combat Cox to keep the Eagles’ defensive star away from Jay Cutler. Josh Sitton, if he’s ever up against Cox, will need to use his strength and footwork to win vs.

Cox at the point of attack. Neutralize the star and make other players beat you – that will be the mantra for the Bears’ O-line against Cox. X-factor: Inside linebacker Danny Trevathan – The prize of free agency for the Bears, Trevathan was around the ball often against Houston with 11 tackles. He also blitzed on third down late in the first half for one of the team’s two sacks. Monday night is a prime opportunity in Trevathan’s first game as a Bear at Soldier Field to make more impact plays. Ryan Mathews is not as effective a back as Lamar Miller, and Trevathan should be able to help the front seven limit Mathews and help put Carson Wentz in difficult third- down situations.

Maybe Vic Fangio will consider utilizing Trevathan in a blitzing situation more often after it worked last week.

The inside ‘backer also could help the ‘D’ defend Brent Celek and Darren Sproles in the middle of the field.

Stat to keep in mind: As effective as Wentz was in his debut, and as good as the Eagles’ O-line is, the Browns hit the Eagles’ quarterback nine times last week. The Bears hit Brock Osweiler eight times, but sacked him only twice.

STEELERS 24, BENGALS 16: At Pittsburgh, Ben Roethlisberger threw for 259 yards and three touchdowns to offset a pair of interceptions.

DeAngelo Williams churned out 94 yards on a career-high 32 carries and added a 4-yard touchdown grab. Tight ends Jesse James and Xavier Grimble also caught scoring passes from Roethlisberger as the Steelers (2-0) kept Cincinnati in check at rainy Heinz Field.

Andy Dalton passed for 366 yards and a touchdown, but needed 31 completions to reach that total, working almost exclusively on dump offs to running backs and tight ends while Pittsburgh clamped down on star wide receiver A.J. Green, who had just two receptions for 38 yards.

RAMS 9, SEAHAWKS 3: At Los Angeles,

Greg Zuerlein kicked three field goals, the longest a 47-yarder in the fourth quarter, and the Rams marked the return of pro football to Los Angeles for the first time in nearly 22 years with a win.

Plenty of penalties slowed down the game for the announced crowd of 91,046 on a searing day at the Memorial Coliseum, where the Rams commemorated the long-awaited occasion by wearing

BRONCOS 34, COLTS 20: At Denver, Von Miller gave the Denver fans a reminder of his Super Bowl 50 MVP performance, sweeping in for the sackstrip of Andrew Luck that sealed the win.

With the Broncos clinging to a sixpoint lead with 1:51 remaining, Miller burst past right tackle Joe Reitz and swiped the ball from Luck’s grasp. Fellow linebacker Shane Ray scooped up the ball and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown.

Miller added a sack on the last play as the Broncos (2-0) sent the banged-up Colts limping to their third consecutive 0-2 start.

They did it by rattling Luck, who started 5 for 18 before he engineered a couple of second-half touchdown drives. Luck completed just 21 of 40 passes for 197 yards and was sacked five times.

FALCONS 35, RAIDERS 28: At Oakland, Justin Hardy caught a deflected 8-yard touchdown pass to break a tie midway through the fourth quarter.

Matt Ryan threw three TD passes, but got lucky on the go-ahead one in the fourth quarter. His third-down throw to Tevin Coleman was broken up, but the ball bounced high in the air and Hardy caught it in the end zone to put Atlanta (1-1) up, 28-21.

The Raiders (1-1) appeared to tie on the next drive when Amari Cooper caught a 51-yard touchdown pass from Derek Carr. But officials ruled Cooper went out of bounds voluntarily before making the catch, although the Raiders contended he was pushed by Desmond Trufant.

CARDINALS 40, BUCCANEERS 7: At Glendale, Ariz., Carson Palmer threw for 308 yards and three touchdowns and Arizona (1-1) intercepted Jameis Winston four times.

Marcus Cooper, acquired off waivers from Kansas City on Sept. 2, had two interceptions, returning the second 60 yards for a score. Winston also fumbled the ball away once.

Palmer completed 18 of 31 passes with no interceptions before sitting out most of the fourth quarter. All three of Palmer’s scoring passes came in the

first half – to Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Floyd and Jaron Brown.

CHARGERS 38, JAGUARS 14: At San Diego, Philip Rivers matched his career-high with four touchdown passes, including two to Travis Benjamin and Melvin Gordon ran for one score and had his first 100-yard game.

The Chargers (1-1) bounced back from their stunning loss at Kansas City, when they blew a 21-point third-quarter lead and fell, 33-27, in overtime.

The Jaguars started 0-2 for the fourth time in five seasons. They crossed midfield only six times and committed three turnovers.

Gordon, a second-year pro, scored on a 3-yard run on the game’s opening drive, his first TD at Qualcomm Stadium. Gordon went in standing up, and then right guard D.J. Fluker lifted him off the ground in celebration. He finished with 102 yards on 24 carries.

COWBOYS 27, REDSKINS 23: At Landover, Md., Alfred Morris scored the goahead touchdown on a 4-yard run with under five minutes left, leading the Cowboys over his former team.

Washington’s Kirk Cousins threw an end-zone interception that set up a long Dallas drive to the winning score.

With rookie quarterback Dak Prescott looking poised throughout and scrambling for a 6-yard TD run in the second half, Dallas (1-1) won for only the second time in its past 16 games without the injured Tony Romo – and both of those victories came at Washington (0-2). Prescott finished 22 for 30 for 292 yards.

GIANTS 13, SAINTS 10: At East Rutherford, N.J., Eli Manning hit Victor Cruz on a third-down 34-yard pass to set up Josh Brown’s winning 23-yard field goal as time expired. The Giants got off to their first 2-0 start since 2009, while New Orleans lost its second straight.

Brown’s third field goal capped an 11-play, 70-yard drive that featured two key third-down passes by Manning and a pass interference call on a throw to Odell Beckham Jr. The game also was redemption for the Giants’ defense. After allowing Drew Brees to throw for 511 yards and an NFL-tying seven touchdowns, New York limited him to one touchdown, 263 yards passing and 288 yards in total team offense.

RAVENS 25, BRONCOS 20: At Cleveland, Joe Flacco threw two touchdown passes to Mike Wallace and the Ravens rallied from a 20-point first-quarter deficit.

Justin Tucker kicked three field goals and the Ravens (2-0) withstood

Cleveland’s final drive to improve to 15-2 against the Browns under coach John Harbaugh.

C.J. Mosley intercepted Browns quarterback Josh McCown at the goal line with 13 seconds left to seal the win.

McCown stayed in despite an injured left shoulder for the Browns (02), who were hurt by a missed field goal and three costly penalties in the fourth quarter.

PANTHERS 46, 49ERS 27: At Charlotte, N.C., Cam Newton threw for 353 yards and four touchdowns, and the Panthers overcame four turnovers.

Newton threw two TD passes to Kelvin Benjamin and one each to Greg Olsen and Devin Funchess to pass Jake Delhomme for most TD passes in franchise history with 122.

Newton’s first pass was tipped and intercepted by Antoine Bethea, leading to a 49ers field goal. But the 2015 league MVP locked in after that, completing 24 of 40 passes while running for 37 yards on six carries.

Olsen gave the Panthers the lead for good in the second quarter when he hauled in a career-long 78-yard touchdown pass after the 49ers bit hard on play-action. That left the Pro Bowl tight end wide open on a seam route.

Olsen finished with five catches for 122 yards.

TITANS 16, LIONS 15: At Detroit, Marcus Mariota converted a fourth down with a perfectly lofted 9-yard TD pass to Andre Johnson with 1:13 left.

Mariota dropped the pass over linebacker Tahir Whitehead to Johnson just before safety Rafael Bush could get to the veteran receiver.

Tennessee went 93 yards on 13 plays over nearly 6 minutes on the game-winning drive.

The Titans (1-1) ended a five-game losing streak, dating to last December, when Mariota threw two TD passes in the fourth quarter after trailing 15-3.

The Lions (1-1) had an opportunity to drive for a second straight winning field goal, but Matthew Stafford threw an interception to Perrish Cox at midfield in the final minute.

TEXANS 19, CHIEFS 12: At Houston, DeAndre Hopkins had 113 yards receiving and a touchdown and Nick Novak kicked four field goals. Novak connected from 32, 24, 31 and 43 yards for the Texans (2-0).

Cairo Santos made three field goals in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 19-12, but Houston recovered the onside kick with less than a minute left.

Houston’s defense set a franchise record by recovering three fumbles in the first half.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Jimmy Garoppolo had three, first-half touchdown passes before leaving in the second quarter with a right shoulder injury as the New England Patriots outlasted the Miami Dolphins, 31-24, on Sunday.

It was the Patriots’ eighth straight home victory over Miami (0-2). It came at a price as New England (2-0) was dealt another blow at quarterback with Tom Brady already out his four-game “Deflategate” suspension.

Garoppolo’s injury came in a flash.

On third down with less than five minutes left in the first half, he was chased out of the pocket and got off a completion to Malcolm Mitchell. Garoppolo was driven into the ground on his shoulder by Miami linebacker Kiko Alonso.

Garoppolo initially got up, before going down to one knee and being attended to by the training staff. He ended his day 18 of 27 for 234 yards and the three scores.

He was replaced by rookie Jacoby Brissett, who led New England to a touchdown on its first possession of the second half. Brissett was 6 of 9 for 92 yards. LeGarrette Blount rushed 29 times for 123 yards and a touchdown.

Martellus Bennett also had five catches 114 and a touchdown.

Miami rallied in the second half but couldn’t catch up.

The Rams (1-1) still are without a touchdown after losing, 28-0, at San Francisco in their season opener.

With field goals accounting for all the offense, it was hardly the high-scoring show Los Angeles sports fans are known to crave.

Truex Jr. beats Elliott in overtime in first Chase race

Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – Call the day of Martin Truex Jr. adventurous.

An early move to the lead. An early stop in the pits because of a delaminating right front tire. The necessity to use NASCAR’s “lucky dog” rule to get back on the lead lap. Getting hit on the backstretch

by Kevin Harvick for no apparent reason.

That was just the first 125 laps.

Finally, after sitting 15th halfway through the race and seventh with 100 miles remaining in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400, the breaks began to fall Truex’s way.

He was running second behind rookie Chase Elliott with 20 laps to go, and the way Elliott was motoring around Chicagoland Speedway, there was no way he’d be caught.

Until, as so often happens, as Elliott suspected would happen, as Truex hoped would happen, a laterace caution occasioned by Michael McDowell’s flat tire and subsequent field of debris in Turn 3 gave hope to any and all of those behind Elliott.

Especially Truex. After he and the other contenders grabbed new tires, he lined up on the outside of the second row for the overtime shootout to decide the issue.

“Getting that fourth spot was the key to winning,” Truex said. “Making the move to the outside was the only one I was presented with.”

The move to the outside after the green flag on the penultimate lap proved to be the winning move.

Truex barreled high going into Turn 1, quickly passing Kasey Kahne, who restarted on the outside of restart leader Ryan Blaney, and set his sights on him.

As about 60,000 spectators watched, Truex came beside Blaney on the exit of Turn 2 and passed him in the middle of Turn 3. He held the lead in his Furniture Row Racing-owned Toyota for the final 2-plus miles of the 270-lap test and captured the first race of NASCAR’s playoff series, his third race of the season, and the sixth of his career, .776 seconds in front of runnerup Joey Logano. Truex, automatically propelled into the Chase’s 12-driver round with the victory, has finished first (at Darlington), third (at Richmond) and first in his last three races.

Elliott knew what was coming when the yellow flag waved for the fourth and final time.

“We know that we see late-race cautions way more often than not,” Elliott said. “You’ve just got to be ready for it, embrace it when it happens, suck it up and try to figure out how to make it happen after it does.”

Elliott, still in search of his first Sprint Cup victory, finished third.

“There is no easy outcome,” Elliott said. “You hate to have it happen.”

Truex, while pleased to win and grab a one-point lead in the Chase playoffs, had empathy for Elliott.

“I know what he’s going through,” Truex said. “He did a great job.

I wasn’t going to catch him. I was catching him, but not enough to pass him in five more laps. I was struggling to run him down.”

Truex also knew grabbing new tires was the way to go.

“Cole [Pearn, his crew chief] said, ‘What do you want to do?’ I said, ‘We just ran a long way, we get tires,’ ” Truex said. “Everybody took tires but three guys, and they were sit-

ting ducks.”

“As much falloff as we were seeing today, it made it much easier to get tires,” Pearn said.

Truex was fortunate not to crash early, so severe was the right front Goodyear tire that was coming apart. That set in motion a sequence of events that most drivers don’t recover from, and when he had, along came Harvick, a lap down after bad luck on timing his first pit stop, to give him an unfriendly tap on the backstretch.

“He hit me in the rear as we were going straight for no reason.” Truex said. “The reason I thought it was intentional is because we were on the straightaway. Typically it’s real easy not to run into somebody’s left rear on the straightaway. As far as I could tell, he did it on purpose.”

Harvick was unavailable for comment, making a quick exit after parking his car in the pit lane.

Simon Pagenaud wins 1st IndyCar title in a banner Penske year

The Associated Press SONOMA, Calif. – In a yearlong celebration of Roger Penske’s 50th year in racing, Simon Pagenaud brought yet another championship trophy to one of the most storied organizations in motorsports.

The Frenchman won his first career IndyCar title in his sophomore season driving for Penske, and did it in dominating fashion by winning the season finale Sunday at Sonoma Raceway.

Pagenaud only needed a smooth race to put a wrap on this breakthrough season.

Instead, he picked up his fifth win of the year and led a strong Penske finish to the final podium. The Penske team went 1-2-3 in the final series standings, the first team to do so since another Penske trio pulled off the sweep in 1994.

“That was a strong run and I take my

hat off to the entire team,” Penske said.

A 14th IndyCar title – and 29th in various forms of motorsports – was guaranteed at the start of the race because only Pagenaud and teammate Will Power were mathematically eligible to win the title.

Pagenaud entered the weekend 43 points ahead of Power, but earned an additional point for winning the pole. Then he led the most laps and won a race that was worth double points in the standings.

“My whole career has been about this day, reaching this level,” Pagenaud said.

“For an athlete, it’s what you work for.”

Pagenaud’s performance was a moot point, however: Power had mechanical issues 38 laps into the race that sealed the outcome.

Probably needing to win to unseat Pagenaud, Power instead finished 20th.

Pagenaud’s final margin was 127 points, the largest points win since Alex Zanardi defeated teammate Jimmy Vasser by 119 points in 1998.

One treatment for BPPV is the Epley maneuver. In this maneuver, a doctor or physical therapist moves your head and body through a series of positions. You also can learn to do it yourself. You begin by lying on an examination table. The therapist gently moves your head to the left and right, then has you roll over and sit up.

Each position moves the loose crystals through the ear canal, repositioning them to relieve symptoms. Your symptoms may improve in as little as 10 minutes. Your doctor also may provide specific exercises for you to continue at home.

For more persistent vertigo, your doctor may recommend something called balance rehabilitation. The types of exercises prescribed will depend upon what movements provoke your symptoms.

The Epley maneuver and several similar exercises have given relief to many people with BPPV. Before these maneuvers were discovered, the vertigo ultimately would go away on its own, but it could take weeks.

These maneuvers speed the improvement – from weeks to minutes. Unfortunately, attacks of vertigo do often return, but the maneuvers help drive them away.

Dear Dr. K: I suffer from benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. I’ve heard something called the Epley maneuver may help. Could you explain what this is?

Dear Reader: Vertigo is the sensation that either your body or your environment is moving, usually spinning. Vertigo can be a symptom of many different illnesses and disorders. The type of vertigo you have – benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) – is the most common form. As you’ve probably experienced, simply changing the position of your head can cause a sudden spinning sensation.

Inside the ear are three tiny canals that help us recognize the position of our body in space and maintain balance. Inside the canals are fluid and tiny hairs attached to nerve endings. The way the fluid washes against the hairs changes when your body is in different positions. When the fluid moves the hairs, nerve signals are sent to the brain.

Those signals get translated in a way that lets you know what position your body is in.

BPPV occurs when tiny calcium crystals form in the inner ear and become dislodged.

They bang around the canals and touch the sensitive nerve endings inside. The brain starts to get conflicting signals. You experience this as a sensation of your body moving around in the world (or the world spinning around your body).

If you have BPPV, simply looking up or rolling over in bed can dislodge crystals and cause brief bouts of extreme dizziness.

Vertigo can feel like the room is spinning or as though you are spinning in the room.

It can be just a sense of imbalance, but it also can cause nausea, vomiting and

DEAR ABBY am 32, married for a year and Jeanne a half, with no Phillips children yet. I am an only child who was raised by my mother until I was 14 because my father was in prison. My mother never remarried. She blames me for her never having found anyone, and she is resentful of my marriage. She doesn’t get along with anyone, not family, co-workers or “friends.”

Recently, at a meeting with my boss and several representatives of these organizations, the topic of fairness in the workplace was mentioned.

I was asked what my experience was, and I shared I thought the workplace was fair. I didn’t think about it at the time, but I now realize I was being asked how my experience was as an LGBT person. My boss has nominated me for a diversity award. The problem is I’m a heterosexual female, and I think he promoted me for the honor because he thinks I am gay.

How should I handle this? Do I need to go on record to my boss that I am straight, that I have a boyfriend, and he misunderstood me? I don’t want this to come back to haunt me, but I’m afraid addressing it may ruin my credibility because it has taken so long for me to address it.

My sexual orientation obviously is not something of great interest at work, but I feel I am living a terrible lie, and I don’t know how to fix this. – Ashamed In D.C. Dear Ashamed: No one should feel compelled to disclose one’s sexual orientation at work, no matter the circumstances. That said, in this particular case, go to your boss before this goes any further. Explain to him privately you didn’t realize when the question was asked that anyone would presume you were gay. If you accept the diversity award without clearing the air first, it potentially could be a source of embarrassment and jeopardize your credibility.

Yes, that improves the chance of having no heart loser because East will hold king-doubleton some 20 percent of the time, but with this layout, the contract will fail. West will win with the heart king and return a trump.

Declarer should try to give West the lead, potentially making a trump shift expensive. At trick two, South should lead the club king from his hand. Here, West wins and may switch to a trump, but declarer wins cheaply, gives up another club, and is home. If West wins and leads a second trump, he loses his heart trick.

South will have a guess only if East wins the second club and leads another trump. Did he start with two low (South must win with his ace) or king-third (South must finesse)?

Knowledge of building/room design and 2 years AutoCAD drawing required. Stage Lighting, Theatre Scenery, Exhibit design a plus. Duties include, but are not limited to: Creation of new design concepts & client files for live events based upon client renderings.

Working closely with client, as well as internal staff, from start to finish to ensure understanding and successful implementation.
