Election contests in store for Sycamore, DeKalb This week, nominating petitions for people who want to run for local office became available at local clerks’ offices around the county.

It’s the first step in the process for people who want to be on the ballot in local elections next spring.

People interested in running for office in their community – and if you have ideas and are willing to dedicate the time, get involved – can pick up the petitions. They can begin circulating them starting Tuesday, with the filing period coming in mid-December.

Unlike in some past years when there’s been few contests, chances are good we’ll see some competition this year for some important leadership positions in both DeKalb and Sycamore, as well as other communities. At least, I’m hoping so.

In Sycamore, the mayor, along with council members in Wards 1 through 4, are up for election. Three-term Mayor Ken Mundy has said he doesn’t plan to run again, and he’s been looking to recruit someone interested in running for the job.

If he chose to run again, Mundy might not have an opponent. There’s no big controversy at the Sycamore Center at the moment. The city is growing, and the city government has been willing to allow big things to happen quickly when it comes to business expansion.

Sycamore also is growing slowly, although whether it’s simply absorbing residents from other local communities has been a point of contention.

The city is named in an important lawsuit filed by the Regional Transit Authority that could result in the loss of a significant source of revenue – jet-fuel sales tax.

But when the office of mayor is up for election, usually you see a contested race, which usually is healthy for a community. People bring different ideas.

In DeKalb, there’s no guarantee of contested races, but I’m expecting some.

Mayor John Rey is expected to run for re-election after his first term in office, and

I’ve heard some rumors about people running, and I’m curious to see who, if anyone, will do so. In 2013, Rey won a three-way contest over Mike Verbic and Jennifer Groce.

Verbic has remained engaged with municipal issues, but hasn’t told me he’ll seek the office again. Groce, who was runner-up in ’13, has since landed a job that seems like a good fit for her as director of communiversity initiatives at Northern Illinois University.

I don’t think we’ll see her on the ballot this time around.

Another potential challenger is Misty Haji Sheikh, who is running unopposed as a Democrat to retain her County Board seat from District 7. You might have noticed some of her letters to the editor on our opinions pages recently, in which she has been critical of the council’s procedures and Rey in particular.

Her husband, Michael, made an unsuccessful run for Ward 5 alderman in 2015, falling short against Kate Noreiko in a threeway race that drew the most votes in the city that year.

I asked Misty not long ago whether she was planning to run for mayor, to which she replied that, right now, she was running for County Board.

Not exactly a denial.

We’ll find out where things stand in December, if not sooner. If you’re planning to run for office, feel free to give me a call.

We’re bound to get acquainted eventually.

DeKALB – Rooting for opposite sides of the DeKalb/Sycamore rivalry did little to stop Joeny and Walter Primm from coming together Friday during the First National Challenge at Huskie Stadium to cheer on their granddaughter, a Spartanette on Sycamore High School’s varsity dance team.

“It’s nice for her to get that exposure,” Walter Primm said. “She would like to pursue a dancing career.”

Joeny Primm did not attend either school, but she said she wanted to see the DeKalb High School Barbs take home a victory.

The Barbs swept the Spartans, 14-0, for the night’s sophomore game, and DeKalb’s varsity team topped Sycamore, 28-12. DeKalb led, 7-6, after the first quarter then scored the next 21 to put the game away.

Meanwhile, the $1 million fundraising mark was reached after 17 years of the First National Challenge, formerly called the Castle Challenge.

This year’s challenge raised $58,000 toward both schools’ booster clubs.

Football may have been the center of might festivities, but many in attendance found entertainment during the pregame tailgating or by watching the schools’ marching bands and dance teams.

Brittney Wood, a 2007 Sycamore High School graduate, watched as her 5-year-old daughter, Savanna, got a glittery golden “S” painted on her face, then asked her mother’s permission before darting back to the bounce house.

“She wants to be part of all the school events,” Wood said. “She recently did a pompom clinic, so she likes watching the dancers.”

Sara Frey also brought her 5-yearold daughter, Helen, who was in a summer dance camp and wanted to see the dance teams.

Frey said that after rain dampened last year’s challenge, she was excited to return on a night with clearer weather.

“I’m originally from Hinckley, so it’s nice to come to a bigger city where the community really gets together to support each other,” Frey

said.

Danielle DuBois and her 11-yearold daughter, Sydney, came to cheer on Sydney’s sister, a sophomore Spartanette at Sycamore High School.

DuBois said the rivalry is all in good fun, and she likes that the money raised supports all of the schools’ sports teams.

“I graduated from Sycamore, so I’ve actually been coming to games on and off since 1990,” she said.

Sydney said she would like to get involved once she enters high school, but she would not follow exactly in her sister’s footsteps.

“I’ll probably be in the marching band,” Sydney said.

All of the schools’ sports teams were represented before the varsity game began as they paraded onto the field led by their mascots, and the crowd – divided by orange and gold – stood to show school spirit.

House fire extinguished in DeKalb DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – A fire at a house at 305 Haish Blvd. caused some smoke and fire damage Friday but was extinguished relatively quickly.

DeKalb firefighters received a 911 call at 12:06 p.m. when a passer-by reported smoke coming from the house.

The fire was contained to a bedroom in the home, DeKalb Fire Chief Eric Hicks said.

There are six tenants at the house, including Tina Bigham, 43, and her fiance.

Bigham said she was at work when the fire started.

“Everyone got out,” she said. “I don’t know what’s going on yet; I just know it’s [in] my bedroom.”

The Red Cross was called to the scene, although it was not clear if the residents would be able to remain in the house, Hicks said.

Several local departments also responded to the scene. The cause of the fire remained under investigation Friday afternoon.

No damage estimate was immediately available.

DeKalb County Board to vote on plans for propane storage facility BIRTHDAY DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – The DeKalb County Board is expected Wednesday to consider a Morris company’s plan to build a propane distribution facility at the northeast corner of Route 64 and Five Points Road.

Dibble Family LLC is seeking a special-use permit from DeKalb County to allow a propane distribution facility at 25330 Five Points Road, on agricultural land near the intersection with Route 64 in unincorporated Mayfield Township.

The property is about a mile from Sycamore and 2 miles from DeKalb, according to county documents.

Neighboring property owners have opposed the project, citing safety concerns, and have said they will file suit to block it. One resident, J.W. Sandy, said the group has hired an attorney and plans to seek an injunction should the board approve the special-use permit.

“We’re going to stop it,” he said.

The 24-member County Board will consider approving a special-use permit for the propane storage facility at its meeting at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at

the Gathertorium, 200 N. Main St., Sycamore.

Dibble Family LLC wants to renovate the existing building on the 2.77-acre site and build two 30,000-gallon propane storage tanks on the northeast corner of the property. A fence would be built to enclose the tanks and office areas. The facility would be used to serve the company’s existing DeKalb County customers. About 90 percent of the company’s customers are farmers and agriculture businesses, according to the proposal.

In August, the county’s Planning and Zoning Committee voted, 5-1, to recommend it for approval to the County Board, which has the final say. Earlier, a public hearing officer recommended it be denied. The hearing officer also cited safety concerns, including a recent seven-alarm fire at a propane facility in Gurnee.

The County Board isn’t bound by either recommendation. However, County Board Vice President Tracy Jones, a Republican from District 1 who serves on the Planning and Zoning Committee, previously told the Daily Chronicle that he expects the special-use permit to be approved.

David L. Ross, 66, of DeKalb, Illinois, died Thursday, Sept.

15, 2016, at University Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born July 2, 1950, in Kimball, Nebraska, he was the son of Gerald and Frances (Clay) Ross. David married KEVIN B. REESE Cheryl Anne Rummel on Feb. Born: Oct. 11, 1966; in St. Charles, IL 12, 1972, in Hanover, Illinois.

Died: Aug. 22, 2016; in DeKalb, IL David graduated from Hanover High School Class of 1968 and was a veteran of The United Kevin B. Reese, 49, of States Air Force. David graduated from RockCortland, Illinois, died, ford College with a Bachelors Degree. MALTA – Overall enrollment is down at Kishwaukee College this fall semester versus 2015 at this time, but the news isn’t bleak when other factors are considered, officials said.

“We’re definitely at a better place than we’ve been in the last few years,” Kishwaukee College President Laurie Borowicz said.

Classes started Aug. 29 for the 2016-17 academic year at the two-year college, and as of Day 10 – the benchmark attendance day reported to the state – 3,775 students were enrolled. Collectively, the students are signed up for 35,425 credit hours, according to data provided by Kishwaukee College.

At the same point in the fall 2015 semester, the student head count was 4,064, indicating a decline of 289 students enrolling in the school this semester. But although the 10th-day count is reported to the state, Kishwaukee officials combine numbers from this past summer semester to make an overall assessment.

“We are pleased to see the enrollment numbers currently flat for the 2016-17

school year, after four consecutive years of enrollment decline,” Borowicz said.

“We are implementing a number of enhancements in our enrollment and retention process to support enrollment growth.”

The 10th-day numbers don’t include students who are expected to enroll in the embattled Adult Education and Transition Programs. As with the last academic year, the program – which depends heavily on state funding, and receives federal money – is in a cash rut because the state is not cutting checks for it. Kishwaukee College officials do not know when that money will arrive.

Nevertheless, Kishwaukee is starting the program two weeks later than scheduled, and final enrollment numbers – the Adult Ed factored in – should be available in the coming weeks, according to time estimates.

“Kishwaukee is committed to providing [Adult Ed] resources to the community, and will be funding the state portion of the program with local resources,” college spokeswoman Kayte Hamel said.

Not only did fewer students sign up for classes this fall, the ones who did are, collectively, taking 2,088 fewer credit hours compared with last fall.

That translates into a direct loss of tuition dollars for the school, which hiked its rates starting with this past summer semester.

Tuition went from $119 a credit hour to $129 for each one, raising the cost of most three-credit classes by $30 each. Continuing students carrying a 12-credit-hour load this semester are paying about $120 more in tuition than those enrolled last fall or spring.

Further, the college’s head financial officer announced to trustees this week that Standard & Poor’s – which helps assess creditworthiness – downgraded Kishwaukee’s bond rating from AA to AA-minus. Three factors

led to that, Finance Director Beth Young said.

“That was primarily [due] to the state ... and our reserves had gone down last year, and the decreased enrollment,” Young said.

Still, Kishwaukee College officials point to silver linings in the cloud of fiscal and enrollment strife. Enrollment was up by 25 percent or more in eight majors, including criminal justice, early childhood education, collision repair and emergency medical services, Hamel said.

Also, its plan to rebound from enrollment decline includes reducing what college officials consider barriers to signing up for classes. To that end, Hamel said, Kishwaukee changed tuition due dates to give students more time to deal with financial aid or otherwise figure out how they will pay tuition. Also, the cost of getting on a tuition payment plan was reduced, she said.

news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – Legendary broadcaster Orion Samuelson has been selected as the grand marshal for the 2016 Sycamore Pumpkin Festival Parade.

The Sycamore Pumpkin Festival Committee also has announced that its “Friend of the Festival” is local grocer Hy-Vee because of the grocery store’s continued support of the cake-cutting ceremony opening the annual festival.

“The committee is thrilled to have [Hy-Vee] support us as they bring great deal of enthusiasm to the event,” according to a news release.

Samuelson can be heard six days a week on WGN-AM Radio in Chicago, where he has served as agribusiness director since 1960, according to a news release from the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival Committee. Samuelson presents seven stock market/agricultural reports daily on the station and also is heard on radio stations across the country with his syndicated “National Farm Report” and “Samuelson Sez” commentary programs. In addition, Samuelson and Max Armstrong host the one-hour “Saturday Morning Show” on WGN Radio and are seen weekly on RFD-TV as co-hosts of “This Week in Agri-Business.”

The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Trustees at financially troubled Chicago State University voted Friday to approve a separation agreement that includes a $600,000 payment for President Thomas Calhoun Jr. after he spent just nine months on the job.

The vote was 6-1 to accept Calhoun’s resignation after a meeting interrupted by protesters supporting Calhoun, with neither the board nor the outgoing president having explained the reason for his departure. His contract, which was supposed to run until January 2021, paid him $300,000 a year and included wording that Calhoun could be removed without cause and accept two years of salary to leave immediately.

The departure comes after a troubled year for the 4,500-student campus, at least partly because of a loss of public funding stemming from Illinois’ budget crisis. In February, it declared a financial emergency, and about 40 percent of its employees have been terminated or laid off since the beginning of the year. Academic programs and services have been reduced.

CHICAGO – A Chicago police officer who was videotaped firing shots that injured two black teenagers inside a car was indicted on federal civil rights charges.

U.S. Attorney Zachary Fardon said in a statement that 41-year-old Marco Proano was indicted Thursday on two counts of deprivation of rights after he allegedly used unreasonable force while on duty on Dec. 22, 2013. Each count of the indictment is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

The release doesn’t detail the allegations, but police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said that the indictment stems from an incident captured on dashboard camera video that was released last year by a retired judge who had handled a criminal trial involving one of the

Ex-county director gets 2 years for $440,000 theft

ROCKFORD – A former Winnebago County purchasing director has been sentenced to two years in prison for stealing more than $440,000 from a program that received federal money.

Sally A. Claassen, 57, of Roscoe was sentenced Thursday in Rockford after pleading guilty in June to federal counts of embezzlement.

“I accept full responsibility for my actions,” she said in court. “My parents raised me to know right from wrong.

This was a very bad mistake.”

“While I am leaving after only a short time, I believe that many signs are now pointing to a very bright future for the university,” Calhoun said.

State Sen. Donne Trotter, a Chicago Democrat whose district includes Chicago State and who is a graduate, said the school “is still at war” and Calhoun is “not a wartime leader.”

“With all the pressure they’ve been under, they need a plan,” Trotter said.

“Without a plan, I’ve been told, he hooked up with those fighting the administration and didn’t work with the members of the board.”

Trustees in February created a four-person management committee that oversaw hirings, layoffs and other personnel decisions at the school. A majority vote of the committee, which included Calhoun, was needed to make employment changes. Lucy was on the board as well.

Bionaz said the arrangement didn’t allow Calhoun to make decisions that a chief executive of a college should be able to make.

Friday’s meeting was crowded with Calhoun supporters, who greeted trustees with shouts and heckles. The one vote against accepting the agreement came from student trustee, Paris Griffin, who told the crowd: “I did speak for you.”

BLUE ISLAND – The mother of a suburban Chicago high school student who has been sitting during the Pledge of Allegiance said she is withdrawing her son from the school because of threats and harassment.

The Daily Southtown reported Kelley Porter Turner said she is pulling her 15-year-old son, Shemar, out of Eisenhower High School in Blue Island and plans to enroll him in an online charter school.

Turner said her son is being called names as he walks the halls of the school.

Shemar said he began sitting out the Pledge on Aug. 26 to protest police killings of blacks.

Residents of contaminated complex sue city officials

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. – Residents forced to move out of a northwest Indiana public housing complex because of high levels of lead in the soil are suing city officials and the companies they said are responsible.

The federal lawsuit was filed Thursday on behalf of three families living in the West Calumet Housing Complex in East Chicago.

Mayor Anthony Copeland ordered about 1,100 residents relocated this summer, saying new test results received from the Environmental Protection Agency showed alarmingly high levels of lead. Most of the contamination is from a smelter that closed in 1985.

The lawsuit said Copeland and other officials knew or should have known about the contamination sooner, and that residents are having trouble finding new housing.

Trump admits Obama was born in the U.S. The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – After five years as the chief promoter of a lie about Barack Obama’s birthplace, Donald Trump abruptly reversed course Friday and acknowledged the fact that the president was born in America.

He then immediately peddled another false conspiracy.

“President Barack Obama was born in the United States, period,” Trump declared, enunciating each word in a brief statement at the end of a campaign appearance. “Now we all want to get back to making America strong and great again.”

But as the GOP presidential nominee sought to put that false conspiracy theory to rest, he stoked another, claiming the “birther movement” was begun by his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.

There is no evidence that is true.

“Hillary Clinton and her campaign of 2008 started the birther controversy. I finished it,” Trump said.

While the question of Obama’s birthplace was raised by some backers of Clinton’s primary campaign against Obama eight years ago, Clinton has long denounced it as a “racist lie.”

“Trump has spent years peddling a racist conspiracy aimed at undermining the first African-American president,” Clinton tweeted after his Friday event. “He can’t just take it back.”

Indeed, it is clear Trump’s foes will try to keep the criticism of his actions alive. African-American members of Congress held a news conference near Washington’s convention center to denounce him immediately after his appearance.

Trump’s allegation on Clinton starting the controversy is the latest example of his tendency to repeat statements that are patently false.

“I’ll answer that question at the right time,” Trump said. “I just don’t want to answer it yet.”

Clinton seized on Trump’s refusal during a speech Thursday night.

“This man wants to be our next president? When will he stop this ugliness, this bigotry?” she asked.

Hours later, Trump campaign spokesman Jason Miller issued a statement that suggested the question had been settled five years ago –

FORT STEWART, Ga. – Before citizen-soldiers of the 48th Infantry Brigade deployed to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Georgia National Guard troops spent months training away from their families and day jobs as they prepared for war. Now a shrinking Army wants them able to get ready for combat sooner.

The brigade’s 4,200 soldiers are the first of 13 National Guard and Army Reserve units nationwide chosen to test a new role that pairs them with commanders on active-duty who will oversee their training.

The Pentagon hopes the change will make the Guard and Reserve troops better prepared to fight overseas at a time when the Army has roughly 100,000 fewer full-time soldiers than it did at the height of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“We’re still a National Guard unit, but we’re hopefully maintaining a high level of training,” said Col. Reginald Neal, the 48th Brigade’s commander and a former school teacher and administrator.

A few hundred of the brigade’s citizen-soldiers – who work as police officers and engineers, attorneys and truck drivers in their day jobs – attended a ceremony Friday at Fort Stewart in which the Guard soldiers stripped the brigade’s lightning bolt insignia from their left shoulders and replaced it with the diagonally striped square patch of their new active-duty partner, the 3rd Infantry Division.

Although they still typically train one weekend each month – a schedule not expected to change in their new role – the 48th Brigade’s soldiers long ago shed the National Guard’s old

weekend warrior stereotype.

The brigade deployed alongside 3rd Infantry units to spend a year fighting in Iraq in 2005, followed by a yearlong tour in Afghanistan in 2009. The citizen-soldiers paid their dues in blood.

In all, 34 Georgia guardsmen were killed during the two deployments.

“This isn’t that crazy of a thing we’re doing here,” said Maj. Gen. Jim Rainey, commander of the 3rd Infantry, who noted the shared history between his division and the Georgia Guard unit. “We’ve trained together, we’ve fought together, and sadly we’ve bled together.”

Rainey said his job is to make sure the 48th Brigade is “ready to go to war” more quickly than in the past.

The brigade spent nearly five months training at Fort Stewart and at the Army’s National Training Center in California before it was ready to deploy to Iraq in 2005.

The Army is forging similar active-duty partnerships for nine additional National Guard units based in Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Vermont, Washington and Texas, which has four units participating. Joining them are two Army Reserve units based in North Carolina and Hawaii.

The pairings are scheduled to last for at least a three-year test period.

The Army said more units may be added after the pilot ends in the fall of 2019.

The number of soldiers serving on active-duty in the Army has dropped from 570,000 during the height of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to 473,844 in July. Despite post-war cutbacks, the U.S. military remains a premier force, with Congress debating a proposed authorization of $602 billion for the next fiscal year beginning Oct. 1.

Pipeline protest site is a city unto itself

NEAR THE STANDING ROCK SIOUX RESERVATION, N.D. – Tribal flags, horses, tents, hand-built shelters and teepees dominate one of the biggest, newest communities in North Dakota, built in a valley on federal land near the confluence of the Missouri and Cannonball rivers.

It’s a semi-permanent, sprawling gathering with a new school for dozens of children and an increasingly organized system to deliver water and meals to the hundreds, sometimes thousands, of people from tribes across North America who’ve joined the Standing Rock Sioux in their legal fight against the Dakota Access oil pipeline to protect sacred sites and a river that’s a source of water for millions of people.

“This is better than where most people came from,” said 34-year-old Vandee Kahlsa, referencing the oftharsh conditions of reservations across the U.S. The Santa Fe, New Mexico, resident, who is Osage and Cherokee, has been at the camp for more than a month.

She joins Standing Rock Sioux members who have been here since April, people from other tribes and non-tribal members from as far away as Asia and Europe who’ve vowed to stay as long as it takes to block the four-state, $3.8 billion pipeline’s con-

struction. Although the Dallas-based pipeline company said it intends to finish the project, protesters have some hope: Three federal agencies are reviewing their construction-permitting process, temporarily blocking work on a small section not too far from the encampment site and asking Energy Transfer Partners to temporarily stop work on a 40-mile span.

But given North Dakota’s brutally cold winters, people will need more than the campfires warming them these days.

“I’m pretty sure by winter there will be some buildings up,” said Jonathon Edwards, 36, a member of the Standing Rock tribe who lives in South Dakota and has been here since April 1, when snow was on the ground. “People who came here came here to stay.”

The encampment has averaged about 4,000 people recently, he estimated; only 25 of North Dakota’s 357 towns have more than 2,000 people.

It’s been called the largest gathering of Native Americans in a century, and the first time all seven bands of Sioux have come together in since Gen. George Custer’s ill-fated 1876 expedition at the Battle of Little Big Horn, Edwards and others said.

Andrew Dennis, 42, called the encampment “creative chaos” that somehow seems to work. The California man, who has no tribal affiliation, arrived last week with supplies and food to donate.

With so much focus on the divides in our society today, including between police and some communities they serve, it is refreshing to see hundreds of people in DeKalb come together. We hope this continues to be an annual event in our community.

Thumbs-up: To the reopening of Grubsteakers Restaurant in Rochelle. Much of the focus in the aftermath of the April 9, 2015, tornado was on Fairdale – and rightfully so, as there was widespread property damage and two people lost their lives. However, other people also were affected, including restaurateur Ava Mirtoska, owner of Grubsteakers, and the customers and employees inside the building that night when the tornado caused the building at the northeast corner of Routes 64 and 251 to collapse. The restaurant’s reopening is a reminder of how resilient people can be, and just how long it can take to rebuild after a disaster strikes.

Thumbs-up: To the reopened and restored DeKalb Public Library. On Sept. 10, community members celebrated the completion of a more-than-two-year, $25.3 million project that has tripled the size of original building and restored the Haish Memorial Library, a 1930s-era building that is on the National Register of Historic Places. The community should be proud of the investment it has made in what has been, and will continue to be, an asset and center of knowledge and learning, a true community space that should serve the public well for many years to come.

Thumbs-down: To a slow-moving recall process for explosive cellphones. Korean cellphone maker Samsung, which earlier this month announced that the batteries in its new Galaxy Note 7 could explode, has been slow to take back the products in the United States, where it has sold about 1 million of the handheld devices. A full recall of the devices was issued only this week by the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission – while, in the meantime, travelers on airplanes were urged to turn the devices off while airborne, and customers have reported difficulty in getting replacement devices. With the prevalence of cellphones in most everyone’s pocket, a device that could explode and cause injury to the owners and those around them should be recalled more quickly.

Seth Rogen, co-writer, co-producer and co-star of the animated comedy “Sausage Party,” is unhappy with me – for defending him.

His movie was attacked by some online commentators for using ethnic and sexual stereotypes, as cartoons often do.

What was remarkable is how incensed some people get over a cartoon, even one about talking food.

A reviewer for a site called Autostraddle at first praised the movie, including its depiction of a talking lesbian taco voiced by Salma Hayek.

But then the site replaced the review with a 2,600-word apology.

Autostraddle calls itself a “progressively feminist online community for a new generation of kickass lesbian, bisexual & otherwise inclined ladies.”

Its endless apology said, “After we received feedback about (the “Sausage Party” review) from our Trans Editor (and others including Facebook commenters), we decided to unpublish the piece.”

Unpublish. Last week, I did a show on free speech. A tweet I sent out plugging it said, “The attack on free speech even extends to silly movies like @ SethRogen’s Sausage Party.”

VIEWS John Stossel Rogen sent my tweet to his 4 million Twitter followers. (Thanks for that, Seth!) But being a Hollywood leftist, he didn’t thank me for defending his movie. Probably because I work for Fox, he tweeted that my tweet is what happens “(w)hen idiots use your movie to pretend that free speech is being attacked when it isn’t at all.”

Rogen’s followers pounced, one saying, “It’s baffling that some people can’t comprehend that criticism is a part of free speech ... Everything is working as intended. Stossel is a tool.”

Rogen tweeted again: “People tweeting that they hate your (stuff) isn’t an ‘attack on free speech.’ It’s people using free speech to tell you they hate your (stuff).”

But wait! I agree! As I said, private organizations have the right to publish or “unpublish” just about anything.

Fortunately, commenters who read about this on the website Mediaite got it: “Rogen would have been wise to not

say anything ... (L)ike a typical Hollywood star, he thought it was all about him. Stossel was making a point about the state of free speech in America today and mentioned the reactions a silly movie is getting to help make his point.”

To clarify: Private individuals are free to criticize all they like, and the First Amendment forbids government to decide whether a taco is offensive to lesbians – or to fundamentalist Christians for that matter.

It’s an important rule. We have just one government. When government censors, we’re all screwed.

Private citizens and private organizations, whether they’re TV channels, universities or activist groups, can duke it out in the arena created by our right to free speech.

We should keep in mind, however, that the same people who get upset about lesbian tacos, irreverent depictions of Jesus, drug use in movies or whatever the controversy of the day is, sometimes become politicians. Some then try to use government force to shut their enemies up. Hillary Clinton wants to censor a movie that criticized her.

I fear that the growing belief that no one should ever have to suffer being offended or hearing something that upsets them could come back to haunt us with calls for real censorship. That would be a real attack on free speech.

It’s good to have a thick skin. In the free-for-all of public debate, people will get upset.

I can’t order people to listen to their enemies any more than I can order my enemies to shut up. The best thing we can do when we hear upsetting ideas is respond with good counterarguments.

People who keep arguing with each other, even if they offend each other, are less likely to look for uncommunicative, violent ways to settle their disputes.

Keep making art, voicing opinions and expecting other people to tell you you’re an idiot who should stay silent.

That’s the messy process by which we learn from each other.

I assume Seth Rogen agrees that’s the best use of free speech there is.

U.S. must answer Russia’s cyberattacks

Less than two months ago, President Barack Obama approved a presidential policy directive spelling out how the federal government would respond to “significant cyber incidents.” In the shadowy world of cyberconflict, this often is a difficult problem: how to identify the source of an attack and respond appropriately.

Obama set benchmarks. He defined a significant incident as one that is likely to result in “demonstrable harm” to the national security, economy or foreign relations of the United States, or “to the public confidence, civil liberties, or public health and safety of the American people.”

In recent weeks, according to private security experts and government sources, hackers associated with Russia’s government have carried out high-profile intrusions intended to weaken that public confidence and disrupt the U.S.

election campaign. Obama should do something about it.

The most spectacular act was the hack of the Democratic National Committee on the eve of the party’s convention, in which 20,000 embarrassing internal emails were stolen and then made public through WikiLeaks.

The leaked emails showed that DNC staffers leaned against Bernie Sanders; party Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz was forced to quit, and the campaign of Hillary Clinton was damaged, probably as Russia intended.

This was followed by an upload this week of internal DNC data such as private phone numbers and email addresses. And in an assault that seems aimed at besmirching Clinton and sowing discord, hackers obtained and released emails from former secretary of state Colin Powell that maligned her and Republican nominee Donald Trump.

This adds up to a full-blown attempt

by Russia to interfere with the U.S. election cycle and weaken public confidence. It probably won’t work – we don’t think Americans are so easily cowed.

But it calls for a forceful response. The administration has been hesitating, in part because of fragile negotiations with Moscow over the war in Syria. The FBI probe is not complete, and some senior officials have told The Post’s Ellen Nakashima they want to wait for the results.

Obama ought to put his foot down, and soon. The cyberattacks are of a piece with a larger attempt by Russian President Vladimir Putin to subvert Western democracies and the ideals of a liberal, rule-based international order.

Putin’s broader campaign has included incitement of war in Ukraine, seizure of Crimea, support for right-wing groups and candidates in Europe, and using a

tide of war refugees from Syria to create instability.

In responding, Obama must take advantage of the strength of an open society and call out the perpetrators, telling the American people what is happening. Obama does not need to release sensitive intelligence to effectively make the point.

Second, Obama should order the preparation of economic sanctions against Russian individuals under an executive order he signed that permits sanctions against people linked to malicious cyberacts. He must put Russia on notice that such disruptive “active measures,” as the KGB once called them, will not be tolerated.

If Putin thinks he can get away with generating fog and doubt, the best answer is to drag him and his dirty tricks into the sunshine.

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Cole Tucker caught the pass, dove into the end zone past a slipped up defender and crashed into the ground for a touchdown that seemingly put DeKalb up three scores late against Sycamore.

But the play was waved off because of a penalty, plus Tucker – the team’s top playmaker – stayed down on the sideline with an injury.

Although the Barbs didn’t score that possession, they scored the next time with Tucker watching from the sideline with a cramp, and held on for a 28-12 win Friday at Huskie Stadium.

“It’s a good win,” DeKalb coach Matt Weckler said. “It’s always tough playing against a good football team and a well-coached football team in Sycamore. You knew they were going to come ready to play. We didn’t play our best game, but our goal coming in was just to get the win.”

Weckler said Tucker just suffered a cramp and was held out for the rest of the game as a precaution, watching from the sideline as DeKalb picked up its third win in a row against Sycamore.

“It feels real good, it really does,” DeKalb defensive tackle Dwayne Lacey said. “We know that Sycamore, considering it’s a rivalry game, they’re going to give all they got.”

The Barbs (3-1 overall, 1-0 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) gave the ball back to the Spartans (1-3, 0-1) after failing to convert a fourth-and-goal from the 25 after Tucker’s injury. Sycamore marched into DeKalb territory, but the Barbs forced the punt, with the offense taking over on its own 16.

In the end, the Barbs were just too good.

The Spartans ran a pair of trick plays in the first quarter – one successfully, one unsuccessfully – but lost to their rival for the third straight year, falling, 28-12, in the First National Challenge at Huskie Stadium.

“You have to take advantage when you have (an opportunity),” Sycamore coach Joe Ryan said. “If you wait, all of a sudden it’s the fourth quarter and it’s too late. You have to take advantage and it was the right time.”

The Spartans won the coin toss and instead of deferring to the second half, they took the ball. Starting on their own 20, the Spartans went 60 yards in 10 plays before facing a fourthand-4 from the DeKalb 20. Kyler had a 42-yard run on the drive, and finished it off with a 15-yard bootleg to the left side for a touchdown with 8:02 left and a 28-6 lead.

“He’s one of our play makers, and that just gives some of our other kids who had to step up and play some confidence,” Weckler said. “We have to be able to score the football with more than just Cole and more than just Derek, and we were

able to do that again today.”

Sycamore scored with 3:30 left – its first touchdown since the first quarter – when Chris Pawola capped his 20-carry, 96-yard day with a 3-yard run for a score. Sycamore recovered the onside kick and got as close as the DeKalb 26 to another score, but no closer.

After 150 yards in the first quarter, the Spartans managed just 12 in the second and 314 for the game. Ty Sulaver threw for 194 yards for the Spartans.

“I think we were able to run the ball pretty well against them, but they made plays when they had to, so give credit to Kaneland for that,” Foxes coach Dan McGuire said. “Neither team gave up, and each could have. It was a wellplayed football game that unfortunately someone had to lose.”

The Knights led 13-7 at halftime, getting a 34-yard touchdown pass from Douglas to Noel and two field goals, while the Foxes got on the board late in the second quarter on Delaney’s 11yard run.

PREP FOOTBALL: GENOA-KINGSTON 35, WINNEBAGO 20

A 12-yard TD run from Delaney gave the Foxes a 14-13 lead midway through the third quarter, but the Knights answered on their ensuing drive as Alstott scampered in for the 5-yard TD run with 3:07 left in the third quarter Avery’s 3-yard run with 7:30 remaining in the game allowed the Foxes to pull ahead again at 21-20. Then, their defense picked off Douglas on Kaneland’s next play from scrimmage That initially appeared to doom the Knights because the Foxes were able to run down most of the clock and get the Knights to use of all their timeouts.

They left them with just enough time for the dramatic finish, though.

“We just needed one final chance to try to march down the field and we made our plays and got the ‘W,’ ” Noel said.“It’s a big win for us. It’s conference and Yorkville is always a tough team, so we’re happy with the win.”

Run game keeps G-K undefeated Huskies

sports@daily-chronicle.com GENOA – Propelled by a ground attack that amassed 223 yards and three touchdowns, the Genoa-Kingston football team beat Winnebago, 35-20, Friday night.

Senior Dan Guardi was the leading rusher in a timeshare with fellow senior Adian Simmons. Guardi was efficient, rushing for 83 yards on 14 carries and scoring twice. Simmons added 71 yards on 10 carries. Guardi attributes his performance to his offensive line.

“They work their [butts] off to make room for me to make good cuts,” Guar-

di said. “We’re not distracted at all. We prepare through the week and practice hard. We work hard and have fun.”

Zach Miller was like a Swiss army knife for the Cogs (4-0) on both sides of the ball. In addition to being in the secondary that held Winnebago to 89 yards passing, he also had three touchdowns.

One came on a 68-yard reverse. His second was on an 89-yard kickoff return.

He capped off his scoring night by catching a 28-yard TD pass from Zach Butler.

“On kickoff returns, we try and build a wall,” Miller said. “The wall was perfect. I saw a seam and made one cut and I was gone.”

The Indians managed to claw their way back into game in the third quarter.

After a 53-yard touchdown pass from Jess Smith to Kenzell Jones, the Indians defense forced Guardi to fumble on the first play of the Cogs’ drive. The Indians scored on a one-yard touchdown plunge

Hiawatha won, 42-6, in a game that was shortened with 6:17 left in the fourth quarter after an unidentified Mooseheart player suffered an unknown injury.

Hiawatha (3-1, 3-1 Northeast Athletic Conference) had everything going

The Hawks returned the opening kickoff to the Red Ramblers’ 23-yard line, where they scored two plays later when running back Josh Hakes ran the ball in from 20 yards out to put Hiawatha up 58 seconds into the game. On the following Red Ramblers (1-3, 1-3 NAC) possession, their punt attempt was blocked and recovered in the end zone for a safety, putting the Hawks up, 9-0.

left in the first half, the Red Ramblers were driving for what looked like it could be their first successful drive of the night. Mooseheart quarterback Michael Lowe had his vision blocked by his offensive lineman and threw a pass right into the hands of Hawks linebacker Cole Dunbar inside the 5-yard line to kill the momentum. Mooseheart’s lone touchdown came from running back Nelson Doe’s 5-yard run in the second quarter. Doe finished with minus-4 yards.

YORKVILLE – Quarterbacks dream about leading their team back from late deficits in the final minutes.

Kaneland’s Jack Douglas never has experienced such glory until Friday night’s Northern Illinois Big 12 East Conference opener at Yorkville.

With no timeouts, only 2:30 on the clock and 76 yards of field to cover, Douglas marched his fellow Knights downfield for the victory. He handed off to Jonathan Alstott for the go-ahead score as the sophomore took it in for a 3-yard touchdown and a 26-21 Kaneland lead with 35.2 seconds remaining.

“This is the first time I’ve ever done it,” Douglas said. “It was a big moment. We were just hoping our defense would make a stop and give us one final chance.”

Kaneland (3-1, 1-0) stopped Yorkville (1-3, 0-1) after a failed fake 42-yard field goal attempt, setting the stage for Douglas (15 for 25, 201 passing yards) and the offense.

The drive was highlighted by two superb catches. The first was a catch and run by Matt Noel for 36 yards, and the second was a leaping, over-the-shoulder grab for 22 yards by Garrett Hukle.

The Knights were well into field goal range – kicker Andreas Matarangas already had booted 23- and 24-yard field goals in the first half – but opted to give the ball to Alstott onthird-and-goal for the winner.

“I believe in all my linemen out there, and they did a great job,” Alstott said. “What a great way to end a game.”

For a while it didn’t look like it was going to end favorably for the Knights.

“It was an obvious hold, it was the right call,” Ryan said. “We got to be able to make plays. He didn’t have to do it – he didn’t want to do it, he didn’t try to do it – he just didn’t have to do it. It’s huge, because now you used one of your little trickeration plays. We did have one more in the bag and we used it, but if we could have had that one, we could have had two scores off the same little scheme, which we thought we could get.”

After DeKalb (3-1) scored on its first drive – a 59-yard touchdown reception

by Cole Tucker – the Spartans responded with another trick play on their next drive, only this time, after Luke Ryan got the reverse, he threw it to Sulaver in the end zone for a 9-yard touchdown reception, capping an 80-yard drive.

Ryan said after the game, it was the first time in his nearly three decades of coaching that his quarterback came up with a receiving touchdown.

However, a poor snap on the extra point kept the Spartans (1-3) from tying it.

It was the last time the Spartans were in DeKalb territory the rest of the first half. The Spartans’ offense sputtered in the second quarter – gaining only 12 yards on three drives, compared to 150 on two in the first – and allowed the Barbs to get a 21-6 cushion going into halftime.

“When you go into games where maybe you’re not the favorite to win, you’re going to come out and try everything you can,” DeKalb coach Matt Weckler said of Sycamore’s early trickery. “So we talked about that, and sometimes coming into a game like this it’s more pressure on us than it is on them. They did some things and utilized what we do well to their advantage with all their screens and that kind of thing.”

The Spartans added another score late, with Pawola punching it in from

“He got the early one – we got caught – but other than that, I think we did well against him,” Ryan said of Tucker. “Kyler broke contain and did some good things, he’s a really good runner. For the most part, they had other people step up and we didn’t quite have that.”

The Spartans converted a couple big plays on that drive, including Sulaver finding Pawola for a 59-yard pass on a second-and-17 from the Sycamore 13. Later, facing a fourth-and-9 from the Barb 27, Sulaver hit Jordan Tolzin for an 18-yard gain, setting up the score on the next set of downs.

West Coast on Thursday night, the Cubs (94-53) were going to celebrate whether they won or lost Friday against the Milwaukee Brewers. But in typical fashion, they found a way to make the moment special, with a thrilling 5-4 vicory on Miguel Montero’s walk-off home run leading off the 10th inning.

With a make-shift lineup that did not include Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Addison Russell, Ben Zobrist, Dexter Fowler or Jason Heyward, the Cubs trailed 4-2 in the ninth, but rallied behind Willson Contreras, Chris Coghlan and Russell to tie the score in the ninth. It was only a matter of time after that, and Montero ended it quickly, setting an appropriate mood for the raucous celebtration that followed.

“The perfect way – a walk-off win and we come in here to celebrate. It

doesn’t get any better than that,” Bryant said. “This team has so much resilience. We’re never going to give up.

You saw that in the game today. Perfect game, the way we won. I haven’t had this much fun playing baseball in a long time.”

Bryant’s euphoria typified the day.

“I was kind of surprised [at the celebration], but at the same time, not so with this group. This group enjoys having fun,” Hendricks said. “You only have so many celebrations. This is the first step. But to enjoy that sense of accomplisment is pretty awesome.”

Only three more celebrations to go.

There’s no doubt this team has enough gas in the tank for that.

“We could get used to [these celebrations],” Hendricks said. “We’ve definitely got the right guys to lead us.”

CHICAGO – Miguel Montero was a fitting hero Friday. The 33-year-old catcher came in hitting .215. “There was actually a point where I thought I was going to get released,” he said. But he came through when the Cubs needed him.

Montero’s 10th-inning home run gave the Cubs a 5-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers, igniting a Wrigley Field crowd awaiting the celebration of the Cubs’ NL Central Division title.

“I’ve been having a tough year,” Montero said. “The reality is, I haven’t really played much this year (59 starts). I haven’t swung the bat the way I wanted.

But the good thing is like the last three weeks, I’ve been swinging the bat pretty good. I’ve been feeling good at the plate.”

Almora’s bid: Albert Almora, Jr., one of the best defensive outfielders on the team – if not the best – could be the odd man out among outfielders for the playoff roster. But Almora served a reminder that he’s more than just a defensive player. The rookie had two hits Friday, including a two-run homer in the fifth inning that tied the score at 2.

Almora, who has four RBIs in his past two starts, is hitting .275 with three home runs and 13 RBIs. His goal right now is to just be ready.

“I haven’t even thought about [the playoff roster],” Almora said. “If they call my name, I’m ready to do whatever I can do to help the team. If not, I’m going to be the first one on the top step (of the dugout), cheering on my teamamates. That’s the way I am. That’s the way I will be.”

When Almora was drafted sixth overall in 2012 (five spots ahead of Addison Russell), the Cubs were 18-36 and had lost 16 of 19 games on their way to 101-loss season.

“It’s something I’ve been wanting to do since the day I was drafted,” Almora said. “The day I was drafted, the Cubs weren’t the best team in baseball. That’s something I promised Theo (Epstein) – it’s kind of funny to say, but I was an 18-year-old kid. I was like, ‘I want to win.’ And I think they liked that about me. Now I know my role here. I know what I can do to help the team win.”

Soler hurt: With the playoff roster in mind, an injury to outfielder Jorge Soler bears watching. Soler left the game in the fourth inning with “right-side tightness.”

CHICAGO – With the music turned up full blast, the lights turned down low and the beer spraying, the champagne flowing and owner Tom Ricketts doing shots, the Cubs’ clubhouse turned into a night club gone haywire Friday in a celebration that was both a long time coming and yet – the Cubs hope – just the first step toward Chicago baseball immortality.

The Cubs celebrated like they hadn’t won a division title in 108 years Friday. But they earned the right with one of the most dominant seasons a Chicago baseball team has ever had – clinching the National League Central Division title with 16 games to go.

Kyle “We just won one of Hendricks the toughest divisions in all of baseball and we did it by a landslide,” first basebman Anthony Rizzo said. “We have to celebrate this because we’ve been so good all year.

Guys have been grinding all year.

This is a huge steppingstone to where we want to be and we’re going to celebrate every way along the way.”

And at the same time, the Cubs were steadfast about keeping the big picture in focus. This team expects to win the World Series.

“There’s much more left for the team,” pitcher Kyle Hendricks said.

“This is only the first baby step. We know where we want to go, and it’s a lot more than just the division.”

A year ago, the Cubs finished third in the Central and made the playoffs as the second wild-card team. This group basked in the satisfaction of raising the bar themselves and exceeding it.

You don’t have to win your division to win the World Series. But this team took a huge step by winning the Central this season.

“This is what we preached in spring training is win the division,” Rizzo said. “We put ourselves in position to line ourselves up with how we want to attack the playoffs (and) whoever we play. So enjoy it, let it sink in for a few days and get ready for October.”

Eagles’ defense strongest up middle

kfishbain@shawmedia.com LAKE FOREST – The Eagles are strong in the middle of their defense, starting with defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, but it goes back to veteran safeties Malcolm Jenkins and Rodney McLeod, who could offset any questions about Philadelphia’s corners.

“Really good safeties,” Bears quarterback Jay Cutler said ahead of Monday night’s meeting with the Eagles at Soldier Field.

“I think you look down the mid-

dle of that defense, that is kind of their strength and you get up to the safeties, veteran guys. They understand football. They are able to play the box. They are able to get off the hash. They play the ball well in the air. That’s kind of their strength in the secondary, and one of the strengths of the team on defense.”

Jenkins is in his eighth NFL season but only 28 years old.

Starting every game last season, he had 109 tackles, 10 passes defensed and two interceptions.

McLeod, 26, signed a five-year,

$37 million contract with the Eagles in the offseason after three consecutive seasons starting every game for the Rams. He had an interception last week of Robert Griffin III, although that was the only pass defensed recorded for the Eagles’ secondary in Week 1.

“Those guys quarterback the defense,” Bears offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains said.

“They’re smart, and you have to make sure what they’re doing and where they’re lined up because they can be a big problem for you.”

DeKALB – There’s a reason the San Diego State football team has won 12 games in a row.

The Aztecs come to DeKalb with a roster loaded with talent, and Northern Illinois will have its hands full as it tries to get the first win of the season when the teams face off at 2:30 p.m. today at Huskie Stadium.

“Certainly will be a challenge, and will be good to be home at Huskie Stadium after two weeks on the road, so look forward to having a great crowd out there,” Huskies coach Rod Carey said. “I’ve always said this about our crowd: When that place is packed, it is a home-field advantage, and certainly looking forward to that, being at home in front of our home people.”

The Aztecs, who won the Mountain West Conference last year, return the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year (running back Donnel Pumphrey), Defensive Player of the Year (cornerback Damontae Kazee) and Special Teams Player of the Year (Rashaad Penny).

In their 45-40 victory over California last week, the Aztecs (2-0) scored touchdowns in all three phases of the game – four offensive, Davis Webb had an interception return for a score and Penny returned a kickoff 100 yards for a score.

As for Pumphrey, he passed Marshall Faulk for most career rushing yards (4,651) by rushing for a career-high 281 yards and added three touchdowns.

“He’s a good player,” Carey said of Pumphrey, who also has eight catches for 70 yards this season. “I think you

Help is available for caregivers Dear Dr K: I’m the primary caregiver for my ill, elderly father. I’m exhausted and upset all the time. What can I do to lighten my load without costing us much? Neither of us is well off.

Dear Reader: You’re not alone. Approximately one in five American adults helps an elderly or disabled family member with the daily tasks of life. This caregiving runs the gamut from grocery shopping, cooking and cleaning house, to helping with baths and personal hygiene or providing hands-on medical care.

That’s often in addition to caring for other family members and holding down a paid job.

Caregiving may be one of the most worthwhile jobs you’ll ever undertake, but it can be exhausting. It can cause immense strain, which may lead to depression and health problems.

Here are some budget-conscious tips to help you take care of yourself: • Always accept help when it’s offered.

Create a list of very specific things you would love to have help with, so you can request something specific when help is offered.

• Tap into religious communities. A religious or spiritual community can be a strong source of assistance if you or the person you are caring for belongs to one.

• Support groups are a good place to share ideas and experiences with other caregivers. There are quite a number of support groups for caregivers on the internet. Just type “caregiving support groups” into a search engine.

• Look for government-supported services. You might be surprised by how many services your father may be eligible for. These are services provided by local or state governments, or by the

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff federal government. Ask your doctor for the name of a social worker who can work with the two of you. Particularly if your father is on Medicare, he may be eligible for help in cleaning the home, personal hygiene, and even “Meals on Wheels” delivered to the home.

• Stay connected. Catch up with friends regularly. Establish a weekly walk with a friend or an occasional lunch or movie.

• Clear your schedule. Set aside a regular time to spend with your partner or family, away from home.

• Stay active. Try to get 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day, most days of the week.

• Enjoy yourself. Listen to music, enjoy a luxurious bath, take a yoga class or do a jigsaw puzzle. Regular time off can renew your spirit and energy. If you don’t take care of yourself, you won’t be in very good shape to take care of your father.

• Ease stress. Learn meditation or other relaxation techniques.

I never have had to be a caregiver for a member of my family, but many of my patients have been in that position.

Their personal sacrifice and dedication inspire me. But sometimes they need help to lighten their load. Often that help is available, but they have to be proactive to find it.

After the birth of our son, “Ricky,” my husband insisted he sleep in our bed with us.

When our son was 3, I finally put my foot down because none of us were sleeping peacefully.

Ricky is now 8, and my husband lies in his bed with him until he falls asleep.

Our daughter, “Julie,” was born 2½years ago. She slept in our bed until she was 1, when I moved her to her own bed. She goes down well on her own, but seems to be more clingy (with me especially) during the day. I try to make sure she gets the affection she needs, but I feel guilty she doesn’t get that closeness at night. By the end of the day I’m exhausted, and I do not want to fall asleep in a kid’s bed. Am I wrong for wanting bedtime without kids? At what age should children sleep on their own? – Sleepy in California Dear Sleepy: You’re not wrong. Some parents co-sleep with their children for the first few months after they are born. After that, they transition the baby to sleeping in a crib nearby so the child’s needs can be attended to as necessary.

According to Los Angeles pediatrician Faisal Chawla, M.D., children form their sleep habits early: “The longer co-sleeping continues, the more difficult sleeping separately becomes. At 7 or 8 months, babies begin to develop age-appropriate separation anxiety. By the age of 1, a routine usually is set in a child’s mind. By age 2, it becomes very difficult to change the sleeping routine because of the ‘terrible 2s’ temperament that begins.”

Your husband has done Ricky no favors by continuing to lie beside him until he falls asleep.

A boy his age should be able to go to sleepovers at friends’ houses or away to summer camp without having to worry about sleeping because his dad isn’t there.

Dear Abby: My boss and his wife recently hosted an employee appreciation dinner party at their home. We have close to 100 employees, and because of limited space, we were asked not to bring children. However, the invitations did indicate “and guest” (or our spouse’s or significant other’s name, if they knew it).

One of my co-workers, a single woman, asked me if I thought it would be OK if she brought a female friend (not someone she is in a relationship with). My interpretation of the invite in this particular situation was if one co-worker couldn’t bring their teenage child due to space limitations, it wouldn’t be appropriate for another to bring a casual friend. What do you think?

– Appreciation Diner Dear Appreciation: When a host issues an invitation that says “and guest,” it means the host is prepared to accommodate whomever the invitee would like to bring. According to my interpretation, it would be wrong to bring a teenager to an adults-only business-related dinner because the younger person likely would feel out of place.

However, bringing a companion along would not be considered a breach of etiquette.
