Artificial intelligence: benefit or threat? POLL I’ve been rather fascinated with the idea of automation lately, of how artificial intelligence and robots soon will become more and more prevalent in our lives.

In Pittsburgh, self-driving cars began accepting passengers Wednesday. Early in the next decade, Ford said, it will develop a completely autonomous vehicle by 2021.

It’s an exciting prospect. A 2015 AAA study found that, on average, Americans drive almost 30 miles each day, about 45 minutes every day.

Imagine having all that time to dedicate to something else.

Many people might not even bother to own a car any more – as it could be just as easy to summon one from a ride-sharing service.

Think of all the people killed or injured in auto accidents because of distracted or impaired drivers.

Imagine if drunken driving no longer was a scourge of our society.

Self-driven cars would be – will be – a tremendous advancement.

Artificial intelligence is making inroads elsewhere, too. Earlier this year, the Cleveland-based law firm BakerHostetler “hired” an IBM robot called “Ross” as a legal researcher in its bankruptcy department.

People ask it questions, and it looks up and quotes the relevant case law.

It’s a job that used to be filled by young people fresh out of law school.

There’s where I start to wonder: Where do we cross the line between robots making our jobs easier and robots taking our jobs away?

Will self-driven trucks put most or all of the 3.5 million truck drivers in America out of work?

Will artificial intelligence make it even harder for young people to find their way in career paths, not just in blue-collar fields, but also in white-collar areas such as the law – or the news, where robots already are writing thousands of stories every year for ser-

I’d like to think that artificial intelligence could just make life easier. Dreams such as better working conditions, a 30-hour work week and an end to scarcity of goods and professional services could become reality.

That’s the dream of the future.

It’s a more comforting vision than one where corporate America seizes upon robots to render huge swaths of society obsolete and unnecessary, or uses artificial intelligence as a means of cowing people into working for low wages and meager benefits because, if they don’t, say hello to your new robot replacement.

We’d end up with a large and growing segment of the population that’s unemployed and doesn’t even bother looking for work – keeping the official unemployment rate down. The people lucky enough to still have jobs – or to own robots – likely would come to see those who had been rendered obsolete as the wolf at the door. The gaps that already exist in our society would widen.

That’s the world I don’t care to live in.

As artificial intelligence becomes more prevalent, we will have to maintain a place in society for people. Casting them off as no longer necessary will only further divide our society.

I’d really like to have a car that drives itself, maybe even a fully functioning robot personal assistant.

But what’s the point of having a car that drives itself if you’ve got nowhere to go?

Third annual unity march draws hundreds from DeKalb, NIU

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Organizers of what has become an annual march for unity said Wednesday’s walk, and the public forum that followed, will help DeKalb and Northern Illinois University further stay on top of community and police relations.

“I think absolutely this is addressing those issues,” NIU Police Chief Tom Phillips said. “One of the good things about what we’re doing here is that we’re on top of it. We’re coming together as a community.”

Hundreds of people – including DeKalb elected officials, city leaders, residents and students, faculty and staff at Northern Illinois University – gathered on the NIU campus to take part in the third annual unity march.

The event began with a short program in which NIU and city leaders talked about the importance of the march.

“It’s important for the university and the community to work together to build a stronger and broader community,” NIU President Doug Baker said.

The event was not a demonstration in response to any particular event, but more of what organizers said should be a nationally recognized example of how communities may come together to help prevent uprisings or tragedies.

“The chance to dialogue with students and citizens, represents my interest in solidarity with NIU, faithbased communities and the citizens of DeKalb,” Mayor John Rey said. “We must avoid getting into individual silos and not recognizing the importance of listening to the concerns from all perspectives.”

The idea for the walk and demonstration was born in 2014, out of New Hope Baptist Church in DeKalb, amid the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, that came after a white police officer shot and killed an African-American man.

This year, the march took place against the backdrop of the July 5 shooting death of Alton Sterling by Baton Rouge, Louisiana, police. A day later, a suburban Minneapolis police officer fatally shot Philando Castile.

Both men were African-American.

Add to that, police became the target of revenge as a sniper killed five police officers in Dallas on July 7; and 10 days later, three were killed in Baton Rouge.

an Orlando gay nightclub, killing 49 people in a massacre that sent shockwaves throughout the country, and especially rocked the LGBT community.

“We [United States] weren’t founded on inclusion ... and those ghosts still echo through every day in our society,” Baker said. “Given that difficult context, I’m really proud of this community for coming together, having dialogues and trying to become stronger.”

Alina Gofman, 19, was among the unity march participants. Her circle of friends is quite diverse, she said, and several of them have told her about their encounters with intolerance and discrimination. She marched, in part, for them, she said.

“I think it is important to show solidarity with the people in DeKalb and at NIU that are trying to make changes and trying to make it a more positive environment. I think everyone has the

right to feel safe and comfortable,” said Gofman, a junior year English education major.

After the march, people gathered in the Regency Room at NIU’s Holmes Student Center for the first of this year’s community forums centered on topics of diversity and inclusion. The interactive discussions, attended by NIU students and staff as well as mem-

bers of the surrounding community, started last spring and are expected to be a mainstay.

“We are courageous enough, as a community, to bring our community together to have conversations about how to thrive and live and be a part of one another’s community,” said Vernese Edgehill-Walden, NIU’s chief diversity officer.

news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – A DeKalb County judge has approved an arrest warrant for a woman in connection with a fight that occurred Sunday afternoon at the Sandwich Fair, DeKalb County sheriff’s police said Wednesday.

The trouble started around 4 p.m., according to a news release sent Wednesday by the sheriff’s office. Police said Fabiola Delgado, 26, of the 600 block of Hartford Street, Aurora, and a 15-year-old girl with her became angry when someone cut in line at a ticket window in the fair’s midway area.

“Someone cut in front of them in line, and they started disputing back and forth at the ticket window, and that’s where the fight ensued,” Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan said Wednesday.

Police said Delgado and the 15-yearold attacked the victim, knocked her to the ground and continued to hit her while she was down. The attack left the victim with injuries that required her to be taken to Valley West Hospital in Sandwich, according to the news release. She was treated at that hospital and released, police said.

Charges of mob action, aggravated battery and battery have been approved against Delgado. She was not in police custody late Wednesday afternoon, Sullivan said. She would be required to post $500 bail to be released once arrested, he said.

The 15-year-old girl will face the same charges in connection with the incident, Sullivan said. Her name is not being made public because she is a minor.

If convicted of the most serious charge, mob action, Delgado could face one to three years in prison.

KINGSTON – A house fire that destroyed the home and possessions of a family on Thurlby Road does not appear to be related to a suspicious fire that was set only a block away on the same day, police said.

The home in the 800 block of Thurlby Road, just off Railroad Street, was destroyed by a fire that was reported at 2:40 a.m. Labor Day. No one was injured in the fire, although the couple living there lost most of their belongings.

Firefighters from the Genoa-Kingston Fire Protection District were able to save the couple’s dog.

Renter Carmen Perez, who was combing through the debris on the property last week, called the fire “devastating,” adding, “We’ve lost

everything.”

The fire appeared to have started outside the home, but the cause remains under investigation, DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said.

DeKalb County Crime Stoppers is asking the public for help as police investigate two other fires in Kingston.

One of the two suspicious fence fires happened Sept. 5 in the 900 block of Thurlby Road; the other was the following day in the 300 block of Willow Street in Kingston, according to a Crime Stoppers news release.

Scott said investigators do not believe the two fence fires are related to the residential fire. However, he said, the investigation is continuing.

DENNIS P. STOVER Born: Jan. 7, 1935 Died: Sept. 12, 2016

Dennis P. Stover, 81, of Sycamore died Monday, Sept. 12, 2016, at the DeKalb County Rehab and Nursing Center.

He was born Jan. 7, 1935, in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, the son of Alva and Margaret (Sayre) Stover. He married Ruth L. Adkins on Dec. 20, 1956.

Dennis was a ready-mix truck driver for many years. Over the years he worked for Redi Redi Mix, Floit Ready Mix, and Huntley Ready Mix before retiring in 1992.

Dennis enjoyed stock car racing, first as a driver/owner and then later as a spectator.

He enjoyed the races at Sycamore Speedway, Freeport Raceway, Rockford Speedway, Grundy County Speedway, LaSalle Speedway and Eldora Speedway in Ohio.

He spent many happy hours at their cabin near Fort Atkinson, WI, camping, fishing and boating.

Mostly, he loved the times with his five dear grandchildren. We will always remember him chewing his snuff everywhere he went.

He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years; four children, Karen Sue Dobson of Scales Mound, Vicki Grubbs, Sandy Contreras of Sycamore, and Randy (Lori) Stover of Genoa; five grandchildren, Paul (Sammi) Wilkinson of Houston, TX, Austin Contreras of Sycamore, and Brooke, Brianna, Brandi Stover of Genoa; one brother, Charlie (Mae) Stover of Point Pleasant, WV; four sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents; his eldest brother, Robert “Smoke” Stover; and numerous extended family members.

His family would like to thank the nurses and aides at DeKalb County Rehab and Nursing Center and Kishwaukee Hospital for the wonderful care that they provided. We would also like to thank DeKalb County Hospice for their compassion.

His visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Butala Funeral Home and Crematory, 1405 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore, IL 60178.

A luncheon will follow afterward at Stone Prairie Club House 1160 Grace Drive, Sycamore, IL 60178

The “jeweled” Coalport porcelain of the late 19th century attracts buyers with its beauty and unfamiliar beading, but few know the history of the porcelain. Coalport porcelain was first made in England in 1795. In the late 19th century, a new type of porcelain vases, teaware, boxes and other ornamental wares were created. It was hand decorated with small colored “beads” of glaze, as well as sections with simulated gems like moonstones or emeralds. These pieces were very expensive when compared to the useful wares made before that time. In 1895, Coalport was able to make the jeweled porcelains by a less expensive method, and more pieces were sold. Collectors have favored these pieces since the 1950s and prices are high today. At a 2016 Skinner auction in Boston, which included over 60 pieces of this type of Coalport, a round covered box, just 2 1/2 inches in diameter, brought $461. The box has turquoise beading and a central medallion. DeKalb power refunds to come in October Homefield Energy did not lower electric rates in July as contractually required

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Officials from Homefield Energy have issued a mea culpa to the City Council, expressing regrets for a billing error that ended up overcharging 5,900 DeKalb customers on their electric bills.

Homefield is the electrical supplier in the area that offers discounted rates to some residential and commercial customers. In all, the company serves 400 communities in Illinois, but the billing error was exclusive to DeKalb, a company spokesman said.

“Upon learning of the problem, we immediately took full responsibility, corrected the problem and announced our intention to issue refunds,” said Mark Fanning, director of retail business operations in Illinois for the Houston, Texas-based Dynegy Inc., which owns Homefield.

He announced at Monday’s regular city council meeting that approx-

imately $87,000 in refunds will be issued starting in October. Fanning said that 4,200 customers were overbilled for two months, and 1,700 were overcharged for a month. Refunds are expected to average about $10 for each month that customers were billed incorrectly, Fanning said.

Fanning said Homefield would be contacting customers to let them know how the refund process will work.

Under an electrical aggregation contract City Council members approved in March 2014, power rates for Homefield Energy customers in the DeKalb city limits were supposed to decrease by 12.9 percent beginning July 1.

However, the company did not enter the change into its billing system, and customers were billed at the previous rate of 7.237 cents a kilowatt hour, rather than the contractually required 6.307 cents a kilowatt hour.

Electric bills were issued by ComEd, which delivers electricity to customers, but Homefield is the supplier.

The utility company found out it had overcharged customers for July and August electrical service after someone noticed the error and called Tim Holdeman, the city’s public works director, Fanning said. From there, word spread to the consultant who introduced Homefield to DeKalb officials, and ended up with Fanning.

Holdeman stood near the podium with Fanning but didn’t make any remarks on the issue.

“We failed to identify that the rate decrease was not implemented in our billing system, as planned,” Fanning said. “We thank the DeKalb resident who notified the appropriate city managers.”

The consultant also addressed the city’s elected officials and offered an apology. He also indicated that he would like to get going early in 2017 with negotiating a new contract with Homefield. The current one expires

“Homefield would have caught the error through an audit, but it would have been further down the road,” said Mike Mudge, owner of Rock River Energy Services, which turned DeKalb on to Homefield.

Neither the aldermen nor the mayor had much to say about Fanning’s apology or announcement. Dave Baker, from Ward 6, did question whether Northern Illinois University students were disproportionately impacted by the billing error or even were able to take part in the discounted energy supply.

Sensorineural hearing loss occurs when the inner ear or the hearing nerve becomes damaged. It’s the most common type of hearing loss because its causes are conditions that are common to most people, such as age, loud noise, injury, disease, ototoxic drugs or genetics. Sensorineural

hearing loss typically is not reversible, but it can be relieved with hearing aids, says Johns Hopkins.

In cases where there is damage in the outer or middle ear as well as in the inner ear (cochlea) or auditory nerve, the condition is called mixed hearing loss. Whether it’s reversible or not depends on the causes and results of treatment that would be achieved in sensorineural and conductive hearing loss independently.

The symptoms of a mixed hearing loss are reduced hearing in one or both ears (bilateral mixed hearing loss).

Mixed hearing loss is treated the same as for conductive and sensorineural hearing loss independently, but in a combination of the two. Conductive hearing loss can often be corrected with medical or surgical treatment, while sensorineural hearing loss is usually treated with hearing aids, according to hear-it.org. In some cases, implants or special types of hearing aids are needed for mixed hearing loss.

CHICAGO – Six purported leaders of Chicago’s powerful Hobos street gang went on trial Wednesday in a case that could provide a rare look inside the kind of criminal activity fueling gun violence in the nation’s third-largest city.

A prosecutor displayed photos of killing scenes and held up assault rifles during opening statements, telling jurors the defendants murdered, maimed and tortured their way into controlling lucrative drug markets on Chicago’s South Side. The trial is the biggest of its kind in recent city history and could take up to three months.

The six men charged with racketeering conspiracy were not “a group of misguided youth” but “an all-star team of the worst of the worst” who “terrorized the city,” federal prosecutor Patrick Otlewski said.

He told jurors, “You will look into the eyes of murderers ... every day.”

CHICAGO – The wife of former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. has been transferred from a federal prison camp to a halfway house where she will complete the remainder of a yearlong sentence for filing false income tax returns.

Former Chicago city councilwoman Sandi Jackson was moved Tuesday from the Federal Prison Camp at Alderson, West Virginia, to what’s known as a residential re-entry center.

Chicago says police officers’ personal emails are private

CHICAGO – The city of Chicago has asked a judge to overturn an Illinois attorney general’s binding opinion that police officers’ personal emails concerning a white officer’s fatal shooting of a black teenager are public record.

The city filed the complaint Tuesday in Cook County Circuit Court, arguing that officers’ personal emails are not subject to the Freedom of Information Act, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

The attorney general’s public access counselor ruled last month that the Chicago Police Department violated public records laws when it denied the

Chester, he added, occasionally had sold drugs to acquaintances. But he told jurors that police fabricated evidence about Chester being a Hobos leader.

“At the center of this case is police lies,” Brindley said. Molly Armour, a lawyer for defendant Arnold Council, echoed that point, saying government witnesses had an incentive to lie in hopes of drastically reducing sentences

The onus is on government attorneys in a racketeering case to demonstrate a pattern of criminal behavior by the defendants within a carefully organized structure. Another defense attorney, Carl Clavelli, said the Hobos often acted haphazardly as individuals and did not meet the racketeering test.

“This is not like the mafia or the Ku Klux Klan where members come and go and the organization persists,” he told jurors.

The men’s motives for killing, the prosecutor said, fell into three categories: killing to boost their status and territory, killing over drugs, and killing to eliminate those cooperating with law enforcement, such as Daniels, who only days earlier had testified against the Hobos before a grand jury.

The judge ordered that jurors’ names be kept secret to ensure they are not subject to intimidation. U.S. marshals have said they already are investigating reported threats against several likely witnesses.

Body of missing Ill. woman found in shallow grave

LADD – Illinois State Police said they’ve found the body of a woman from Ladd who had been missing since Aug. 22.

State police said Wednesday that a body found in a shallow grave in Standard has been identified as 62-year-old Deborah Dewey. Standard is about 10 miles south of Ladd. Authorities said Dewey’s body was identified using dental records.

Police said the investigation in her death remains ongoing.

State police said officers executed a search warrant Tuesday at a Standard home where they collected evidence and interviewed three occupants.

One man, 66-year-old Clifford A. Anderson of Standard, is charged with concealment of death. He was being held on $750,000 bond.

Dewey was reported missing after she did not report to work.

Her car was found in Morris on Aug. 29.

Airports in Chicago, Rockford get $36M in federal grants

CHICAGO – Airports in Chicago and Rockford are receiving a combined $36.5 million in federal grants to make improvements and address concerns about noise.

U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Mark Kirk, U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced the grants Tuesday.

Midway International Airport in Chicago is receiving $17.5 million for sound insulation on residences near the airport.

O’Hare International Airport is receiving about $13 million.

That includes money for repairs to a runway and for an environmental impact study.

Rockford International Airport is receiving about $6 million to fund part of a 30,000-square-foot terminal expansion, allowing the airport to meet increased passenger demand.

Trump tries to repurpose Clinton’s attacks against her

Those are the jibes Donald Trump has recently unleashed on Hillary Clinton. If they sound familiar, it could be because she’s lodged those very attacks on him throughout the campaign.

As he works to gain ground against Clinton in the final stretch of the presidential race, Trump is increasingly repurposing Clinton’s attacks against her. It’s a popular schoolyard tactic for the GOP nominee, a political game of “I know you are, but what am I?” In the last few days, Trump and his campaign have repeatedly criticized Clinton for failing to provide specific policy proposals. That’s despite the fact that, by any measure, Trump has offered less detail on far fewer issues over the course of his campaign than Clinton, who has released so many policy proposals, her campaign published a book of them.

“Clinton is running a policy-free campaign. She offers no ideas, no solutions. And only hatred and derision,” he said at a rally Tuesday in Clive, Iowa.

It’s ironic coming from a candidate defined by divisive statements, who once mocked Clinton’s large policy shop, deriding her proposals as “a waste of paper” and insisting the public didn’t care about the sort of specifics she offered.

But it illustrates the way that the newly redesigned Trump campaign has embraced the technique of projection, slapping attacks back on his opponent, whether they fit or not.

It’s a tactic aimed at neutralizing attacks, said Tucker Martin, a longtime Republican operative.

“Essentially you’re delegitimizing their attack by simply muddying the water,

“It’s almost like a political shortcut,” he said, “a strategy of, ‘Nope you’re guilty too, let’s move to the next question.’ ” Early in her campaign, Clinton and her allies highlighted Trump’s most controversial comments to paint him as too crass for the job.

Her campaign’s first attack ad featured children watching and reacting to a compilation of Trump clips.

“Next time you see Trump rant on television, think about all the children listening across America. Kids hear a lot more than we think,” Clinton recently said.

It’s a line Trump lifted this week, after Clinton said at a fundraiser that half of Trump’s supporters fit into a “basket of deplorables,” including racists and xenophobes.

Trump asked his audience in North Carolina. “To every kid in America tonight, I want you to know that your parents are working so hard to make

your life better, and to make your country better.”

The same pattern has repeated over and over. After Clinton called Trump “temperamentally unfit” for the White House, Trump responded by defending his temperament and assailing hers. He’s accused her of being involved with Russia – despite his frequent praise of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his own campaign’s ties to the strongman. And he’s accused Clinton of starting the “birther” movement questioning President Barack Obama’s citizenship, when he was its most vocal proponent.

The most jarring example has come in Trump’s denunciation of Clinton, deeply popular among blacks, as a racist.

A day after her campaign announced that she’d be giving a speech linking Trump to the so-called “alt-right movement” – a modern evolution of white supremacy – Trump escalated his attacks, labeling Clinton as “a bigot who sees people of color only as votes, not as human beings worthy of a better future.”

“She’s going to do nothing for African-Americans. She’s going to do nothing for the Hispanics,” said Trump, who himself is viewed as racist by a large portion of the electorate.

Newly signed law should help deserving felons get new jobs Late last month, Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a bill that, his office said, will “give former offenders a brighter future.”

The legislation in question will allow people with certain forcible felony convictions to apply for waivers so they can qualify for necessary state licenses that govern certain health care careers.

The impetus for the bill came from people who were convicted of felonies at younger ages, paid their debt to society and wanted to pursue positive paths in their lives by learning skills and seeking employment in those fields.

However, before the new law took effect, people who wanted to work in health care were restricted from qualifying for the necessary state licenses.

Now, that former lifelong restriction can be lifted – with a few exceptions. The ex-offenders need to petition the state Department of Financial and Professional Regulation to seek the necessary waivers, after a post-conviction waiting period.

It is hoped that more felons who want to set their lives straight will be able to do so now, which should help to reduce recidivism.

“Finding and keeping a job is the best antidote to going back to prison, and this new law will make it easier to do just that,” Rauner said.

The state’s acting prisons chief, John Baldwin, concurs.

“This bill will allow offenders who have completed their sentence and clearly demonstrated their commitment to making a positive contribution to Illinois to work in an area of study that they are trained and licensed in,” Baldwin said.

The agency in charge of licensure, the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, now will “have the flexibility to consider the totality of applicants’ qualifications and experiences, not ignoring their criminal background but balancing it with evidence of their rehabilitation,” agency chief Bryan Schneider said.

We hope the law, Senate Bill 42, works as intended by its sponsors and supporters.

We also urge state officials to give a look-see at other careers licensed by the state to see whether the same lifting of restrictions for felons might be beneficial.

The state regulates numerous professions – more than 125, by our count. Among the higher-tier professions are architects, funeral directors and embalmers, real estate, nursing, physicians and veterinarians.

Regulation of those jobs is understandable.

But we wonder whether other professions – such as hair braiders, nail technicians, canine handlers and cosmetologists – need such strict regulation.

Be that as it may, we wish good luck to those who will benefit from the loosening of the state’s licensing apparatus.

I also live alone. I can get up when I want to, go to bed when I want to, watch TV when I want to, read what I want to, go where I want to. I don’t have to answer to anyone.

When my dad had his home, he had a sign in his kitchen that read, “I’m the boss of this kitchen, my wife says I can be!”

City officials should be more in touch

To the Editor: The Homefield Energy billing error illustrates the need for the city of DeKalb’s department heads to reside in the city to better understand what its citizens deal with under their leadership, but only three are required to do so, by contract.

DeKalb Public Works Director Tim Holdeman, who does own a home in town, is charged with overseeing the city’s electrical aggregation program.

Sadly, he, along with his supervisor, City Manager Anne Marie Gaura, did not notice the overbilling by Homefield Energy for two billing cycles, and likely would not have, if I did not raise a red flag.

Also, Mayor John Rey and all seven aldermen were oblivious to the overcharge.

This shocks and angers me, and should anger every taxpaying household in town.

“Lack of trust” is a phrase citizens use quite often when describing city staff. These individuals collect lofty taxpayer-funded salaries and are sorely out of touch.

City officials refuse to accept any blame and are unwilling to make a public apology for their lack of oversight of the Homefield Energy contract.

DeKalb needs to set up guidelines to ensure that the contracts it negotiates on behalf of the taxpayers are enforced and due diligence is applied in the future.

I contacted Holdeman and asked him to formulate answers to questions that citizens have after this oversight caused more than 5,800 DeKalb power customers to overpay 13 percent on their electric bills for July and August.

1. What measures does the city plan to institute to better monitor its agreements?

2. Why did city personnel did not discover this error?

3. What measures does the city have in place to ensure its agreements are followed?

I also have contacted city staff and Mark Fanning of Homefield Energy to look into requesting a cost-benefit, in addition to the promised refund, to be issued to the consumer for this error.

Homefield Energy kept our money hostage for months and should be held liable for violating the contract, and additional penalties should be assessed.

What Clinton missed in ‘basket of deplorables’ Hillary Clinton made a mistake when she put half of Donald Trump’s supporters in a “basket of deplorables.” She already had given her big speech on Trump’s ties to the alt-right. And she had talked before about some of his supporters being “deplorable.”

You could even read her remarks as an attempt to persuade liberals to have more sympathy for Trump voters: Some of them, she was saying, were not racists, homophobes and so on, but rather felt let down by their government and stressed by the economy.

(Oddly, the possibility that a significant number of Trump voters might be neither bigots nor economically anxious – that they might just favor Trump because they usually vote Republican – seemed to escape her.)

This time her words became controversial and gave the Trump campaign an opening – because she assigned “half” his supporters to the bad basket. Trump and his running mate, Mike Pence, said Clinton had slandered millions of Americans.

So her remark was impolitic. Was it mistaken in any deeper sense?

That depends on the answer to two questions: How racist, sexist, etc., are Trump’s supporters? And how deplorable does that make them?

Some commentators have cited surveys to defend the accuracy of Clinton’s remarks.

Polls have found that most

A Reuters-Ipsos poll taken over the course of the spring found that nearly half of Trump supporters consider blacks more violent than whites.

Most Republicans polled during the primaries favored a temporary ban on Muslim immigration.

Also during the primaries, a poll found that nearly 20 percent of Trump supporters, shockingly, regretted the Emancipation Proclamation.

Sounds pretty ugly.

But there are a few things to keep in mind. First: Not all of those polls can be taken at face value. That last one should be interpreted very cautiously.

As Tim Carney pointed out, the wording was sufficiently confusing that 10 percent of Sanders supporters, 6 percent of Clinton supporters and 5 percent of blacks chose the pro-slavery answer.

Second: Some of these views may not be rooted in prejudice. The response that blacks are more violent, for example, may just reflect statistics showing that blacks commit more violent crimes in proportion to

their population than, say, whites do.

This fact doesn’t justify suspicion of the vast majority of law-abiding black people. But it may help explain why more than 30 percent of Clinton supporters, too, view blacks as more violent. (How many of Clinton’s defenders are willing to say that about a third of her supporters are deplorable, too?)

Nor is confusion about Obama’s religion per se bigoted, given that the press has had no qualms about calling his “Muslim roots.”

Third and most important: You can hold deplorable views without being a deplorable person in general. David Duke is deplorable, even if Mike Pence can’t bring himself to say so.

But deplorable or misguided views aren’t always defining ones.

That a Trump supporter, when asked, says blacks are more violent than whites does not necessarily mean that’s why he is supporting Trump, or even that racial differences are a topic that he thinks about much at all.

The view that our government is naïve about violent Muslim extremism – a view that a lot of political rhetoric, including some from Clinton, reinforces – could lead someone to answer yes to a pollster’s question about banning Muslim immigration. But you might be able to convince some of those people that a ban is a bad idea (as I believe).

You might appeal to the better angels of their nature. If you have written them off as terrible people, on the other hand, you’re not going to try.

Bill Clinton understood this point. Racism in the United States has been declining for decades, so we can assume that a large percentage of his voters in 1992 and 1996 – to say nothing of his voters in Arkansas before that – held racial views worse than the ones surveys have shown to prevail among Trump voters. (Check out the trend lines on views about housing discrimination and about interracial marriage.)

Bill Clinton saw that a lot of white voters had some legitimate concerns – about crime and welfare, for example – mixed up with some worse impulses.

He spoke up for racial tolerance and addressed the legitimate concerns, and refrained from condemning millions of people for harboring prejudices that he must have deplored.

While progressives these days disapprove of many steps Bill Clinton took in the 1990s, particularly on racially fraught issues, that was the right approach. And his wife was right to clarify and apologize.

Hillary Clinton’s penchant for secrecy is worrisome America now knows Hillary Clinton has pneumonia only because a man named Zdenek Gazda happened to have his cellphone camera out at the right time.

Gazda shot the now-famous video of a wobbly Hillary Clinton collapsing as she tried to make her way into a van outside a 9/11 remembrance ceremony Sunday.

An ill Clinton left the service abruptly, leaving the journalists who cover her penned in at the event, unaware of her location or condition.

Her campaign said nothing for 90 minutes, then issued a statement saying she merely felt “overheated” (on a relatively mild New York morning).

Rumors and speculation filled the void for most of the day before the campaign finally revealed late Sunday that there was more to the

story – she had been diagnosed with pneumonia more than two days earlier.

The incident damages Clinton more than it might have because it feeds two pre-existing suspicions about her: That she is in poor health, and that she is obsessed with secrecy. We’re more concerned about the second.

It is unsettling, to be sure, to see a potential president crumple toward the ground. Even so, it’s not a shock that a person going at Clinton’s pace could contract pneumonia, and antibiotics could clear it up relatively quickly. If that was indeed the cause of Sunday’s spell, it’s a far cry from the brain afflictions such as dysphasia that Donald Trump backers have “diagnosed” for Clinton.

Clinton, however, has another ailment: We’ll call it publicophobia,

a condition that leads one to mislead the public, avoid press conferences for 250 days, work off secret email servers, and prevent pool reporters from following her even as she runs for the highest office in the land.

This is the more off-putting malady, and it damages her credibility time and again.

Of course, Trump is not the model of transparency, either. He has not released his tax returns or his medical records. Neither he nor Clinton allows a so-called “protective pool” of reporters to follow them at all times, as is customary for presidential nominees.

Candidates do not have to release their tax returns by law. But the public has come to expect it from people seeking the nation’s highest office.

Clinton has done so, and Trump has not. Similarly, the public should de-

mand the candidates release detailed medical records.

Both candidates said Monday they plan to do so in coming days. That’s especially important now with so many questions swirling around Clinton. The candidates should also allow pool reporters to shadow them.

Trump would be the oldest president ever at the time of his election.

Clinton would be eight months younger than Ronald Reagan was in 1980.

Clinton’s Sunday fainting spell, or whatever it precisely was, will fuel Republican allegations that her health makes her unfit to serve as president. That’s a big leap if she merely has pneumonia. It’s her other syndrome that sparks the most concern, and requires aggressive treatment.

It was everything.

Only a freshman at the time, DeKalb kicker Connor Tierney lined up for the game-winning field goal. It went through the upright from 30 yards out with 4.2 seconds left, giving the Barbs a 31-28 win over Sycamore last year.

“A game like that is really special, something you don’t forget for probably your whole life,” Tierney said. “It’s cool to look back on, but you have to remember to keep going forward and working hard and stuff like that will come again.”

Tierney is set for his second showdown game with the Spartans as the teams meet Friday at Huskie Stadium in the First National Challenge.

The 2016 season got off to a rough start for Tierney, who missed two of his first three extra-point chances to start the year against Moline. But he’s made 10 straight since and also had a 25-yard field goal so far the Barbs, who, despite a 28-21 loss last week at Lake Park, are averaging 33 points a game.

DeKalb coach Matt Weckler said Tierney got things under control after the rough start in Week 1.

“I think the first game he kind of over-warmed up or was over-excited,” Weckler said. “He was probably kicking a little too hard early in the warmups.

You know how kickers are, everything has to be precise and specific. He learned from that Week 1 and since that time, his pregame kicking and stuff has changed and he’s been more prepared to kick mentally and physically.”

Weckler said Tierney coming up with the big kick last year would be like any other player making any other big play.

“Just like our quarterbacks, just like our running backs, when it’s his time to perform, he’s got to go do that,” Weckler said. “Each and every week it’s different challenges. It may be a (short) field goal, four extra points or a 32-yard field goal – whatever it might be, he’s got to be ready for all that.”

Weckler said Tierney has the perfect mental attributes – in addition to the big leg – to be an effective kicker.

“Sometimes, just like any other position, talent doesn’t mean they’re mentally ready to perform at the varsity level,” Weckler said. “Luckily for us he was able to do that. He has confidence enough in himself and his ability. When things went well, he was happy, and when things didn’t go well, he was able to overcome those things and regroup and be positive and make plays the next time out.”

Pawola looking to help Spartans run past DeKalb after 100-yard performance last year

ecarifio@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Chris Pawola took the handoff and was gone, 69 yards to the DeKalb end zone to put the Sycamore football team up seven late in the fourth quarter.

Just 6 minutes, 29 seconds later, he and his Spartans teammates were walking dejected off the DeKalb High football field as the Barbs came back for a 31-28 win.

A year later, the teams are getting ready to meet again, this time at Huskie Stadium in the First National Challenge on Friday – unless lightning pushes the game back a day to a different venue as it did last year. Pawola said the Spartans (1-2) are ready to snap their two-game losing streak against the Barbs (2-1) with the lessons learned from last year.

“It was probably the hardest thing in football I’ve experienced,” the senior running back said. “But at the same time, like coach (Joe) Ryan said, you don’t get moral victories. But that made us realize how much harder we had to work. We were

complacent with being ahead by seven with six minutes left, and we let it slip away from us.

“It hurt a lot, and now we know,” he said. “Especially the seniors that were there last year. We know what we have to do to make that transition from almost winning to winning.”

Pawola ran for 101 yards on 12 carries and scored twice in the loss to the Barbs last year. Both scores broke a tie – his first touchdown, from three yards out, gave the Spartans a 14-7 lead just before halftime, and the long one put his team up 28-21.

“I know I can do it, I know I can have a good game,” Pawola said. “At the same time, I try not to think about what I’ve done in the past. It’s all about now, now, now. I’m not worried about what happened, I’m worried about what I can do now. Hopefully, I can have an even better game.”

Pawola and the Spartans offense struggled in Week 1 in a 38-6 loss at Sterling. Pawola ran for 28 yards on six carries, then had 99 yards in Week 2 in a home loss to Grayslake North. On

Saturday, he ran for 85 yards on only seven carries in the Spartans’ 63-6 win against an overmatched Roosevelt (Indiana) team.

He has four touchdowns on the ground this year and 212 yards on 29 carries. He also has been effective in the passing game, catching eight balls for 86 yards and a score.

“We had a tough first game at Sterling,” Ryan said. “They had a good run

defense and we didn’t run particularly well. We’re going to face another really good defense. I think we’re getting better in the running game, and the proof is always when you take the test. The tests are usually on Friday, and this week is going to be like a final exam-type test playing a team as good as DeKalb is.”

Ryan said Pawola brings a lot of energy and experience to the team.

“He always plays hard,” Ryan said.

“It doesn’t matter if he’s on show team or starting. You never see a difference in him. He’s always running really, really hard and trying to get better.”

Pawola said as long as the Spartans focus on what they’re capable of – as opposed to what DeKalb can do – they feel positive going into the game.

“We know they’re a very talented a team,” Pawola said. “We’re not worried about them, we’re concentrating on us right now. In the first games we lost, we weren’t as good as we wanted to be. It’s really all about us right now. If we do what we’re supposed to do, the game is in our hands.”

Paeglow paces Barbs in win over Spartans

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Jack Paeglow led the way for the DeKalb boys golf team, shooting a four-over 39 to help give the Barbs a 166-174 victory over the Sycamore Spartans at Kishwaukee Country Club on Wednesday.

“The course was playing pretty soft today,” Paeglow said. “You had to club up on most of the clubs. Other than that, the conditions were perfect for golf. I hit a few drives off line that cost me a couple of strokes. My short game was good. I got up and down on a couple of bogies that should have been doubles.”

DeKalb’s usual number one Austin Freeman is currently sidelined with a wrist injury that coach John Cordes said was more of an overuse issue.

His role is being filled by sophomore Emma Carpenter. Carpenter says that

being the number one is a huge confidence builder.

“Last year, I didn’t have as much faith in myself,” Carpenter said. “Being the only girl and being so much younger than the boys – coming out and playing with the top players, doing as well and beating some of them, it is a real confidence builder.”

Although they won the match, Cordes admitted that as a team, DeKalb (5-0) played average today as a team.

“We played about how we’ve been playing all season,” Cordes said. “We had perfect conditions today. You never want to push away a win, but this was our worst nine-hole score of the year. We had a few guys who were battling, but overall, we were good.

We need to work on course management and not playing outside of our game. You don’t want to try and par a hole when a bogie is all you need and

then end up triple on the hole.”

Sycamore (2-2) was led by their fifth player, senior Josh Levy, who shot a 41. Levy was able to shake off a triple bogie on the first hole, playing at three-over for the rest of his round.

“I went to the range with my coach and worked out some of the flaws in my swing yesterday,” Levy said. “I had been slicing drives lately and hadn’t been able to figure out my irons. I don’t feel like I hit a bad shot all day. I three-putted twice and lipped two par putts, though. I have to clean that up.”

The number one player for the Spartans, senior Trent Scott, did not play up to the high standards that he has for himself. Scott shot a tenover 45 on the day. Scott says that he knows what he has to do to get back on track.

“I was expecting a lot more from myself,” Scott said. “Being the num-

ber one, I was trying to lead the team and it didn’t go too well. I did birdie 18, though. That was the highlight of my round. I went OB (out of bounds) three times today. I just have to work hard and keep the ball in play.”

“The front four did what we’ve done all year,” Sycamore coach Rick Davis said. “Low to mid 40s is about what we do and that’s what we did today. In practice, we just try to hit a lot of golf balls. Make sure that swings are on plane and that we are making good contact consistently. We need to work on hitting more greens in regulation. The greens we do hit, our proximity to the hole isn’t very good. At this point, it is just repetition. Work on hitting pins or targets in practice and go from there.”

DeKalb will travel to Freeport on Saturday for a 9 a.m teetime. Sycamore will also play Saturday, traveling to Aurora for an 8 a.m. start.

Herscher is making waves in Class 3A tory of the school’s program. St. Ignatius hasn’t been 3-0 since the 1950’s. Granted the program was dormant for many years, but still the feat is still a watershed moment for the squad.

The ranks of the undefeated will certainly dwindle a bit this week with notable games such as St. Charles East and St. Charles North and Virden-North Mac and Williamsville pairing off undefeated squads.

The list of 0-3 teams spans 110 teams.

Like the list of 3-0 squads, the 0-3 list also includes some unexpected names. Bishop McNamara hasn’t been 0-3 since 1979, while power programs like Wheaton Warrenville South, Joliet Catholic and – Kyle Nabors, Daily Journal Simeon also find themselves in the same precarious predicament.

Herscher entered the Associated Press Class 3A poll at No. 10 last week, and it will be interesting to see how far the Tigers move up this week following an impressive 25-8 victory over Interstate Eight foe Plano last Friday.

The undefeated Tigers have now outscored their opponents 136-14 to start the season. Quarterback Tyler Jones has been outstanding thus far. The senior has completed nearly 66.7 percent of his passes for 432 yards and six touchdowns while also rushing for 208 yards.

Herscher has a great chance to improve its record to 4-0 with a matchup at Streator (1-2, 0-1 Interstate Eight Large) on Friday.

Oswego and Oswego East are the only remaining undefeated teams in the Southwest Prairie Conference, but took two very different paths to their 3-0 starts. Oswego East leads the league with 168 points scored, while Oswego has scored just four touchdowns in the first three weeks. The Panthers instead have relied on their defense to carry them to the top – allowing the fewest points (9) allowed in the SPC. For the second straight week, Oswego East earned a running clock at halftime as the Wolves built a 58-0 lead on visiting Joliet Central after two interceptions and a blocked punt return also translated into scoring opportunities. Ivory Kelly-Martin once again only played two quarters of football but managed 98 yards rushing and an additional three catches for 81 yards for a combined four touchdowns. Quarterback Jaylon Banks threw four TD passes – two for Kelly-Martin and a pair to Stephon Harris – to finish 9 of 15 for 164 yards. Oswego East set a school record with a 71-0 victory.

Plano’s road to the Class 4A playoffs hit a road block in Herscher as the Reapers gave up four first-half touchdowns and fell 25-8 to move to 1-2 on the season. The Reapers face a winless Sandwich team in Week 4, but defending Interstate Eight Conference champion Manteno and undefeated Coal City are just around the corner.

Orozco takes second to lead Genoa-Kingston to victory DAILY CHRONICLE

sports@daily-chronicle.com Sarai Orozco had another strong performance to help lead the Genoa-Kingston girls cross country team to their second invite win in five days after the Cogs won the five-team Byron Invite on Wednesday.

Orozco finished in second place with a time of 20 minutes, 47 seconds for the Cogs, who had five runners finish in the top 12.

Behind Orozco were Anna Drendel (21:42, fourth), Heather Gathman (22.19, seventh), Joely Overstreet (22:44, ninth) and Rachel Younker (23:27, 12th).

The Cogs, who also won the Rockford East Invite on Saturday, took first as a team with a score of 32 – just ahead of host Byron (38).

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY Cogs take fourth at Byron: Ryan Wade was the top finisher for the Cogs, who were fourth in the five-team Byron Invite.

Wade finished fourth individually with a time of 17:29, while Michael Booton (18:26, 13th) and Brennan Peters (19:13, 18th) both finished in the top 20.

KSO to open 40th season with pianist and composer Emily Bear DAILY CHRONICLE The Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra will begin its 2016-2017 season with its fall concert, “Happy 40th Season KSO!” at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 8, in the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall in the Music Building at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

The KSO will perform “The Planets,” by Gustav Holst, and with piano soloist Emily Bear, “Rhapsody in Blue,” by George Gershwin, and Bear’s original works “Les Voyages,” “The Bravest Journey” and “Santa Fe.” The public is invited to attend a free pre-concert lecture in the Recital Hall beginning at 6:30 p.m. This concert is supported in part by the Kishwaukee Symphony Associates.

At age 15, pianist, composer and songwriter Emily Bear enjoys arranging, orchestrating, and performing in a diverse collection of styles. Having made her professional debut at the Ravinia Festival at 5 years old, she has since performed at many of the world’s most well-known venues including Carnegie Hall, the White House, Lincoln Center, Montreux Jazz Festival, Blue Note, the Hollywood Bowl and others.

Her concerts have taken her to concert halls across the U.S. and Europe and Asia, and her love for all musical styles ranges from pop, classical, jazz, and everything in between. Lately, she has been singing and writing all genres of pop music with many of the top songwriters and producers in the industry.

Bear was the youngest to ever receive the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award at age 6. Orchestras all over the world have performed her original orchestral pieces and she is the 2016 recipient of the ASCAP Herb Alpert Jazz Composer of the Year Award. She recently was commissioned to arrange an original composition performed by 25 pianos at the same time for Street Pianos Mesa.

Establishing herself as a classical artist, she performed Mozart’s “Piano Concerto No. 23 K488” at the age of 7.

Other pieces in her concerto repertoire include the Schumann “Piano Concerto,” “Rhapsody in Blue,” by

auditions for the Arthur D. Montzka Young Artists Concerto Competition on Jan. 7. This annual event will present Illinois musicians, up to age 18, playing portions of concertos in a competition to determine who will win a monetary prize and perform a solo concerto accompanied by the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra on Feb. 25. The competition is open to the public at no charge. It will begin at 10 a.m. and continue (probably into the early afternoon) until all competitors have performed. Members of the audience may come or go after each performer.

The KSO will present the Arthur D. Montzka Memorial Concert at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 25, featuring this season’s winner of the Arthur D. Montzka Young Artists Concerto Competition.

Also on the program are the Symphonic Suite from “On the Waterfront,” by Leonard Bernstein, and Symphony No. 4 in A Major, Op. 90 (“Italian”),

On May 20, Chicago’s legendary comedy theater, The Second City Improv All-Stars, visits the Sandwich Opera House with an irresistible hour of improvised comedy starting at 8 p.m.

Fresh, fast and always spectacularly funny, The Second City is celebrating 55 years of producing cutting-edge satirical revues and has launched the careers of legends like Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, Gilda Radner, Bill Murray and more. The masters of the form will astound you with their talent, skill and wit – all without scripts or sets.

An addition to the comedic lineup is Louise Roche’s new play, “Help! My Husband Has Gone Missing, My Daughter is Getting Married & I Am Having Hot Flashes!” where you’ll be amused, delighted, and even comforted as Barbara takes us on a hilarious, emotional, intriguing and ultimately uplifting journey. Three performances will take place on the stage at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. June 10, and at 2 p.m. June 11.

Grassroots Juicery & Cafe in Sycamore will host area performance group Wooden Box Theater at 6 p.m. Friday as they present “Baby, You’re a Firework,” an event highlighting theatrical performers, fashion models, vendors and live music.

It will be a back-to-schoolthemed event for the Sycamore venue, which regularly hosts live music and farmers markets.

“Baby, You’re a Firework,” will be co-hosted by St. Charles business owner (Bombshell Blowout Boutique) and lifestyle coach (Studio 56) Meredith James and hula-hoop performance artist Morgan Abrams of the HoopChakra team. Abrams will perform two sets to music handpicked to set the tone for the event.

The music lineup will be highlighted by Carolyn Lasare in her debut with Wooden Box Theater. Lasare also is the co-owner of Inspired Salon in Naperville.

Live music also will be provided by Joel McMullin, ForeverStardust (Bear Wolf and Zéphirine Moon Garden), Mitch Munns, Mia Lynell, Peter Lindsey, David Jonsson, Jay Rivi and Christina Antonio.

Wooden Box Theater, as a performance and event-writing team, began on stage during an edition of Open Mic at The House Café in the summer of 2006, and continues regularly directing events in the DeKalb and Geneva area.

The show also will feature Laura Jean Furgason, an Aurora-area agent for It Works Global. Furgason will speak about her experiences being part of the company and co-host a pair of the event’s segments.

“Baby, You’re a Firework” was written by Daniel Sherrill and Wooden Box Theater manager Christina Antonio.

November would not be complete without the music from The Giving Tree Band, local artists from Yorkville, on Nov. 19. The Giving Tree Band takes its cues from bluegrass, folk, Americana, and other southern traditions. Looking to create a “timeless” sound that evokes an earlier era, the band focused on acoustic instruments instead, creating a down-home sound that made room for guitar, banjo, upright bass, violin, mandolin, Dobro, dulcimer, and ukulele.

December will see the return of Joseph Hall’s Elvis on Dec. 7, a “Nutcracker” performance on Dec. 10, and some classic Christmas movie favorites throughout the month. Keep warm in January as we watch some more favorites on screen.

Come celebrate Valentine’s Day weekend on Feb. 12 as the Drifters serenade us starting at 3 p.m. The Drifters were in the first class of rock and roll legends to be initiated into the Hall of Fame and the first African-American group to be inducted. Their classic tune “Under The Boardwalk” is the most played R&B record of all time. Screenings of classic romantic comedies are also scheduled for February.

Jackie Kennedy film to get Oscar season release

The Associated Press TORONTO – The Jackie Kennedy biopic “Jackie,” starring Natalie Portman, has been acquired by Fox Searchlight, which plans to push the film directly into the Oscar season.

Searchlight announced the acquisition early Tuesday shortly after the Pablo Larrain-directed film played at the Toronto International Film Festival. Though the market has been quiet in Toronto, “Jackie” has been the most hotly pursued film since its Venice Film Festival debut last week. The film cuts between the events surrounding the assassination of John F. Kennedy and other moments in the first lady’s life.

Fox Searchlight will release the movie Dec. 9, and it’s widely expected to catapult Portman into the best-actress Oscar race. Fox’s specialty division is an awards season regular that has ushered many films into the Academy Awards, including best-picture winners “12 Years a Slave” and “Birdman,” as well as Portman’s own “Black Swan,” which won her best actress.

Parker’s Nat Turner slave revolt drama “The Birth of a Nation,” had been seen as the studio’s horse in this year’s Oscar race. But that film’s awards hopes have been badly damaged by a rape accusation from Parker’s past. In Toronto, Parker deflected questions about the case in a press conference.

“Pablo Larrain’s ‘Jackie’ is a daring, one-of-a-kind cinematic portrayal of a beloved icon,” said Fox Searchlight Pictures Presidents Nancy Utley and Stephen Gilula.

Indian Valley Theatre has launched its revamped website: www.indianvalleytheatre.com.

The redesigned site offers quick and easy access to information about Indian Valley Theatre. It provides detailed information in eight main categories with subcategories in each. The new website has a clean, uncluttered design with improved functionality and navigation and is extremely user-friendly. It also is mobile friendly.

The redesign project began many months ago and was completed in record time thanks to the donated services of Wheelhouse|Five, who redesigned the site with input from a committee of volunteers from IVT. The new website will be updated on a regular basis with news, events, photos, audition announcements and upcoming shows. Indian Valley Community Band looking for members

The band’s repertoire ranges from marches, musicals and light classics to contemporary concert band music.

Dear Dr. K: In a column about abdomi-

nal fat, you talked about two kinds of fat – brown fat and white fat. I’d like to hear more about them.

Dear Reader: I’m glad you asked, because the discovery of these two types of fat could prove to be very important. In the column you refer to, I discussed how visceral, or abdominal, fat (which accumulates deep inside the abdomen) is more harmful to our health than subcutaneous fat (the fat just beneath the skin). But when it comes to fat, it’s not just location that matters. Color counts, too – and brown is better.

Humans and other mammals have two types of fat: white fat and brown fat.

(There also may be a third kind that’s in between, sometimes called “beige fat.”)

Until very recently, we thought adult humans had only white fat. We knew some adult animals had brown fat, and human babies did, too. But we thought babies lost their brown fat as they grew older.

Discoveries at Harvard Medical School found all of us maintain some brown fat cells throughout our life. Why is this important? White fat cells store fat. When we get “fat” – when those love handles start to appear – that’s because we’re growing more and bigger white fat cells.

Brown fat cells, on the other hand, don’t store fat; they burn it. They are brown because they contain lots of mitochondria, the energy factories inside each cell. The mitochondria in brown fat cells burn fat to create one kind of energy: heat.

Animals with relatively more brown fat are less likely to develop insulin re-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff sistance, a precursor to diabetes. They’re also less fat, because they burn more fat and store less of it. In other words, it appears brown fat wards off obesity.

These findings would be interesting – but not particularly relevant – if we couldn’t control the amount of white and brown fat in our bodies. But ongoing research suggests we can.

My colleagues at Harvard recently have discovered natural chemicals in all of us that affect the number of white and brown fat cells. One is a molecule called irisin. This hormone is produced by muscle cells, particularly when those cells are regularly exercised. It circulates through the blood and transforms white fat cells into brown fat cells.

When obese mice with insulin resistance are given injections of irisin, they lose weight and have reduced insulin resistance. This discovery has excited scientists, for obvious reasons. If it worked the same way in humans, and without side effects, it could have huge health benefits.

A word of caution: Many “silver bullets” for obesity have come and gone.

Still, I’d bet on this newly discovered molecule, and on other advances triggered by the discovery that we adult humans have brown fat within us.

Dear Abby: I DEAR ABBY am a bisexual female college Jeanne graduate living Phillips at home, and an only child. I have had one sexual encounter with a woman but never a relationship. I have, however, had relationships with men.

I came out to my mother when I was a teenager. She didn’t believe me, but did say she would not mention it to my other parents or family members. (I have two stepparents as both biological parents remarried.)

I am considering – if I find a woman to go on a date with/be with – pursuing a lesbian relationship. However, I am not financially independent and won’t be for many years. My problem is I’m afraid to do it while I am living at home. My cousins, friends and ex-boyfriends all know, just not my parents, grandparents, aunts, etc. Do I try for my own happiness and hope for the best, or defer my happiness and only date men? – Scared To Be Who I Am Dear Scared: You are no longer a teenager; you’re an adult now. You should be entitled to have the kind of relationship with which you are most comfortable. If your cousins know you are bisexual, the chances are so do their parents. Recently, some issues have arisen with them about the way they regard my mode of travel.

They prefer flying versus driving. I don’t because of my size.

I can’t fit into an airplane seat and buckle the seat belt without an extender. I’m always worried I’ll be forced to buy an extra seat or won’t be allowed to fly because of my weight, and it is stressful. I have tried for years to lose weight, but have gotten only to the point where I’m maintaining my weight.

I fit comfortably in my car. I can get the seat belt buckled, and I don’t have to inconvenience other passengers.

My family now is trying to discourage me from taking future trips with them because I won’t fly. They claim it’s because I’m single and normally travel by myself. I’m in my mid-30s and have traveled solo for years. We have a wonderful convention for showing a single card in a suit -- a splinter bid. It worked wonders on this deal. But, first, how should South play in six spades after West leads the club queen?

When South showed four spades (and denied four hearts) in answer to Stayman, North jumped to four diamonds, a splinter bid, indicating at least four-card spade support and game-going values with a singleton (or void) in diamonds. This slight overbid was music to South’s ears, who no longer feared three fast diamond losers. He control-bid four hearts, then jumped to six spades when partner settled for four spades.

South seems to have one loser in each minor and only 11 winners: five spades, four hearts and two clubs.

Where might he find an extra trick?

Winners most often come from a ruff in the shorter trump hand or establishment of a long suit. Here, each is impossible. Unusually, declarer must play for ruffs in the longer trump hand.

He wins with his club ace and plays a trump to dummy. (With this layout, he must not cash the spade ace or jack.) Then South loses a diamond. Let’s say West wins and leads another trump.
