County double homicide investigation continues DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – Some detectives investigating the beating deaths of a mother and her son who were found in their DeKalb County home on Old State Road east of Sycamore have be reassigned more than a month after the homicides.

The DeKalb County Major Case Squad had used law enforcement resources from throughout the area in the wake of the killings, checking out 700 leads. The squad had retained its full complement of investigators from the sheriff’s office, as well as from DeKalb, Sycamore, Sandwich and Northern Illinois University police departments and the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s office at least through Sept. 2.

DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said that although some officers have been reassigned to their departments, the squad continues to work on the case daily.

Police said Patricia A. Wilson, 85, and her son, Robert J. Wilson, 64, were killed sometime during the evening of Aug. 14, and were found dead in their home at 16058 Old State Road east of Sycamore around 6 p.m. Aug. 15.

Police have said there were signs of a breakin at the home, an autopsy showed they were beaten to death with a blunt object.

Police believe the killer or killers fled in Patricia Wilson’s white 2010 Chevrolet Impala, which has since been identified driving on Route 64 from Sycamore to Chicago that night.

Chicago police found the vehicle Aug. 24 near Lincoln Park Zoo, near where Route 64 ends. Police said it appeared to have been there for several days.

A $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the killings remains on offer.

Kishwaukee YMCA receives grants to help local programs DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – The Kishwaukee YMCA has received financial support to help the organization in its efforts to aid area low-income and underserved families.

First National Bank provided the nonprofit YMCA with a $10,000 Community Development Grant for the Camp Power program.

This summer marked the first year the Y took over full administration of the camp, designed as outreach to youth in DeKalb’s University Village housing complex. The six-week camp is free to participants and offers daily activities as well as free lunch and snacks, according to Kish YMCA information about the camp.

“First National Community Development Grants are offered to community organizations who support the revitalization and stabilization of lower-income neighborhoods within the community,” states a Kishwaukee YMCA news release about the grant.

The organization also received a $1,000 donation from NAPA Autocare Centers to help the YMCA offer summer camp scholarships. The money is part of the auto care company’s monthly outreach where it selects a nonprofit or charity to give 10 percent of the money it gets from oil changes.

“NAPA has provided support for the Y’s summer camp every year since 2007. This financial support has resulted in over 100 children having the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive, all while having fun in DeKalb County,” according to the news release.

DeKalb officials question plans to add apartments to former Campus Cinemas building

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – City planners have raised concerns about parking problems and the structural safety of a developer’s plan to add a two-story apartment complex above the former Campus Cinemas building in DeKalb.

Developer Pete Occhipinti is seeking a special-use permit to add a second and third story to the former movie theater at 1015 Blackhawk Road.

The upper floors would be divided into 22 one- and two-bedroom apartments. The four-screen movie theater on the ground floor would remain a theater, but with reduced seating capacity, according to city documents.

City officials have recommended the Planning and Zoning Commission deny recommendation to the City Council, which will make the final decision. The commission will consider the special-use permit at a meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall, 200 S. Fourth St., DeKalb.

“The applicant has not provided plans or documentation to prove that this project can be constructed safely or that the addition of 22 units will not generate a parking problem,” according to a city memo. “The applicant has also not demonstrated that the structure is capable of accommodat-

Occhipinti, of Rockford, wrote in

an application that he believes the remodeled mixed-use building would benefit the neighborhood.

“I feel since the character of the area is consistent with multifamily dwelling, building this project will only enhance, complement and increase the adjacent property value,” he wrote in the application.

Occhipinti’s plans for the existing single-story, 15,200-square-foot building at the northwest corner of Hillcrest Drive and Blackhawk Road include an addition to serve as residential entrance and lobby along with fire stairs to the ground floor, according to city documents. From the documents, it appears city officials had some difficulty in working with Occhipinti.

“It is unfortunate that the applicant chose to abandon the process and direct staff to move his case forward to the public hearing phase before the Planning and Zoning Commission because the applicant did not work with staff to consider site plan revisions that were necessary to allow code compliance, did not submit a set of plans that were consistent with the final site plans, and did not identify and request or pay application fees for any variations as part of the application,” officials wrote in a memo.

Occhipinti said he didn’t know how the commission would vote on his proposal in a brief phone interview Tuesday morning. He declined to discuss the project further. He said he wasn’t feeling well.

DeKalb’s Principal Planner Jo Ellen Charlton and Long-Range Planner Derek Hiland couldn’t immediately be reached for comment Tuesday.

Kish College board OKs fiscal 2017 budget

rgillespie@shawmedia.com MALTA – There was no official public outcry expressed Tuesday at the public hearing held for Kishwaukee College’s fiscal 2017 budget, but officials said they have been hearing laments about how the state recently left the school in the lurch.

“I think there’s a sense of frustration that the state left us hanging high and dry last year,” said Bob Johnson, chairman of the Kishwaukee College board of trustees. “We’re always hopeful that our friends in Springfield will decide that higher ed really matters in Illinois.”

So, for the two-year college in fiscal 2017, which runs from July 1 to June 30, 2017, the board banked on receiving not more than $2 million from the Illinois Community College Board, which administers appropriations to the state’s two-year colleges.

Chairman of the Kishwaukee College board of trustees shows the college will spend more on employee benefits ($2.9 million) than it anticipates getting in grant aid from the state. The budget was approved unanimously at the board of trustees meeting, which included the public hearing.

This year’s budget is $3.2 million less than last year’s. In addition to decreased revenue expectations, the school instituted some spending restraints, such as replacing a student worker in the cafeteria with a self-service bar and not filling some job vacancies, officials said.

Also, tuition was increased.

“We’ve got challenges, no question,” Johnson said. “It’s a tight budget but ... with the people that are no longer working here and pretty flat enrollment, we’re OK. We’ll make it another year.”

Officials said that they don’t plan for any more layoffs. The college let 24 staffers go in March, part of one of the biggest staff reductions in the college’s history, as a result of not getting state funds and battling enrollment declines over the past few years.

This is the first budget in Kishwaukee College President Laurie Borowicz’s term. She started at the college

in January, taking the helm after Tom Choice retired Dec. 30. She echoed Johnson’s thought that the college can make it through fiscal 2017, and called for the state to step up with funding.

“At this point we are good, provided we do get the stopgap funding,” Borowicz said. “We are optimistic that we can continue on the track we are on.”

The state came up with an interim appropriations bill in July designed to get the state through the rest of the calendar year. But there is no official state fiscal 2017 budget yet. Lawmakers are expected to reach a deal on one after the November election.

Kishwaukee College’s fiscal 2017 budget seems to indicate a shortfall of about $800,000 between the revenue and expenditures. Johnson said, however, that the budget is balanced.

“We put some money to the side to spend on the building, the facilities. We saved it from last year, but we’re going to spend it this year,” he said.

EMERY L. COCHRANE Born: July 19, 1936 Died: Sept. 11, 2016

Emery L. “Junior” Cochrane, 80, of DeKalb, IL, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016, at DeKalb County Rehab and Nursing Center.

Born July 19, 1936, in DeKalb, he was the son of Emery and Olive (Sparks ) Cochrane. Junior married Kathleen Bright on Jan. 3, 1959, in DeKalb.

Junior was a graduate of DeKalb High School Class of 1956 and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was employed

by Johnson and Jacobson Construction, and later, Illinois Hydraulic. After retirement, Junior worked as maintenance for St. Mary Catholic Church in DeKalb. Junior enjoyed playing poker and was a Cubs and Bears fan.

He is survived by his wife, Kathie; three daughters, Janeen Cochrane of Chicago, Kelly (Mark) Lovell of Sycamore, Erin (Charles) Johnson of DeKalb; four grandchildren, Stephanie, Michael, Nathan, and Meghan; two great-grandchildren, Ayzlynn and Wyatt; three brothers, Roger (Trudy) Cochrane of Elva, Jim (Judy) Cochrane of Sycamore and Charles Cochrane of Estero, FL; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Wilma Alms, Viola Conners, Betty Plapp, Mary Ray, and Sandra Cochrane; and brothers, William and Paul Cochrane.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m.

Monday, Sept. 19, 2016, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 244 Waterman St., Sycamore, with the Rev. Paul Lipinski officiating. Full military honors are by the DeKalb American Legion Post 66. Cremation will follow, with burial of cremated remains at a later date.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sycamore.

Born: Jan. 7, 1935 Died: Sept. 12, 2016

Dennis P. Stover, 81, of Sycamore, died Monday, Sept. 12, 2016, at the DeKalb County Rehab and Nursing Center.

He was born Jan. 7, 1935, in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, the son of Alva and Margaret (Sayre) Stover.

He married Ruth L. Adkins on Dec. 20, 1956.

Dennis was a Ready Mix truck driver for many years. Over the years he worked for Redi Redi Mix, Floit Ready Mix, and Huntley Ready Mix before retiring in 1992.

Dennis enjoyed stock car racing, first as a driver/owner and then later as a spectator.

He enjoyed the races at Sycamore Speedway, Freeport Raceway, Rockford Speedway, Grundy County Speedway, LaSalle Speedway, and Eldora Speedway in Ohio. He spent many happy hours at their cabin near Fort Atkinson, WI, camping, fishing, and boating. Mostly he loved the times with his five dear grandchildren. We will always remember him chewing his snuff everywhere he went.

He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years; four children, Karen Sue Dobson of Scales Mound, Vicki Grubbs, Sandy Contreras of Sycamore, and Randy (Lori) Stover of Genoa; five grandchildren, Paul (Sammi) Wilkinson of Houston, TX, Austin Contreras of Sycamore, and Brooke, Brianna, Brandi Stover of Genoa; one brother, Charlie (Mae) Stover of Point Pleasant, WV; four sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents; his eldest brother, Robert “Smoke”

PATRICIA WOLF Patricia “Pat” Wolf, age 89, of Elgin, formerly of Maple Park, IL, passed away quietly into the arms of her savior Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016, at St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin.

She is survived by her son, Michael (Maureen) Wolf; her daughter, Lee (Larry) Olesen; Eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren (with two more on the way!); many nieces, nephews and a family of friends.

Dec. 26, 2011. Don worked for DeKalb Ag for 25 years in the poultry division. He was the township supervisor of Richmond Township for 24 years, and he continued to farm in the Richmond area for many years. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in DeKalb, He was a 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus member at St. Joseph’s in Richmond, IL, and he was a longtime member of the Richmond Rotary Club.

Survivors include two children, Margo (John) Sears of Ottumwa, IA, and Donald (Beth) Young Jr. of DeKalb; a brother, Jack (Phyllis) Young of West Chicago; and grandchildren, Lisa (Shawn) Sullivan of Harvest, AL, William (Leona) Sears of Ankeny, IA, and Elayne and Abby Young of DeKalb.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Muerita; and his brother, Fred.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m.

Friday, Sept. 16, 2016, at St. Mary Catholic Church in DeKalb, with the Rev. Kenneth Anderson officiating. Burial will be immediately after Mass at St. Mary Cemetery in DeKalb.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016, at Finch Funeral Home in DeKalb.

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The Sycamore Library Board will delay plans to ask voters whether the library should become its own taxing district with new boundaries as it searches for a new leader.

The library board voted unanimously Tuesday to “pause the referendum process until a later date,” board Vice President Curtis Lang said.

The board also approved a severance agreement with former Executive Director Sarah Tobias. The board fired Tobias this summer. Under terms of the agreement, Tobias

will be paid 12 weeks of her normal annual salary, which was listed as $64,332 in a 2012 employment letter.

Her employment ended Aug. 1, according to terms of the agreement.

The total amount of the payout wasn’t included in the agreement.

Jesse Butz, who previously served as director of adult services, was named interim director as the board begins its search for a new leader.

Board members reviewed a job description and job posting for the executive director position Tuesday.

Board members decided that given the recent leadership changes, it made more sense to hold off on referendum plans to become a district library until a new executive director

was selected. The new leader would be expected to drive the referendum process and build consensus within the community to approve the referendum, Lang said.

In April, the board voted unanimously to approve filing a petition to get the referendum question onto the April 4, 2017, consolidated election ballot. Voters were to be asked if “a public library district shall be organized to include the city of Sycamore and contiguous territory without a local tax supported library.”

The boundaries of the proposed library district would be similar to those of the Sycamore School District 427, but there are some differences.

The library’s existing service

boundaries had an estimated population of 17,500. If the referendum passes, about 1,600 households would be added to the library’s service area.

That’s about 4,000 people based on an average household size of 2.48, bringing the new service population estimate to 21,487, according to library documents In January, the board voted, 6-1, to approve a maximum levy rate of 32 cents per $100 of equalized assessed value to be included in the resolution and petition. The higher tax rate, coupled with the expanded district boundaries, would increase the library’s property tax revenue about 40 percent to $1.4 million, according to estimates from library officials.

DeKALB – Comuniversity – a term of unity between Northern Illinois University and its surrounding community – is expected to be on display today as NIU kicks off its now-annual unity march for solidarity.

The idea for the walk and demonstration was born in 2014, out of New Hope Baptist Church in DeKalb, amid the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, that came after a white police office shot and killed an African-American man. The pastor joined with NIU Police Chief Thomas Phillips and DeKalb Police Chief Gene Lowery to host the march.

“We saw the uproar of violence, and what was happening with the community and the police,” said the Rev. Joseph Mitchell, pastor of New Hope Baptist Church. “I sat down with the police chiefs and said, ‘How can we be proactive instead of reactive in this community?’”

Mitchell said that in the years since then, the event has grown to include NIU and more people from the DeKalb area.

“Hopefully, it creates an environ-

ment where we can have some open dialog, and we can learn who we are as a community – together and not in different silos,” Mitchell said.

The unity march, as it is called, will step off at 6 p.m. today from the MLK Commons on the NIU campus. Participants are scheduled to walk along Normal Drive to Lucinda Avenue through Greenbriar Road and back to the MLK Commons.

After the march, NIU is scheduled to host the first of this year’s community forums centered on diversity and inclusion. They started during this past spring semester.

Two weeks after today’s march, NIU has scheduled a play co-sponsored with the law school where the audience will act as the jury in a mock case centered on race, religion, class and gender. More related events are scheduled for October and November.

“This is our attempt to continually create resources and space for open dialogue,” said Vernese Edghill-Walden, NIU’s diversity chief.

All of the events are free and open to the public. Free on-campus parking will be available, NIU officials said.

Rauner gives $100K to Ind. candidate

The Associated Press INDIANAPOLIS – The Illinois governor has tossed in $100,000 of his own money to boost the campaign of Indiana’s Republican gubernatorial candidate even as the two states compete to lure jobs.

The money Gov. Bruce Rauner gave to Indiana Lt. Gov. Eric Holcomb’s campaign last week is a small fraction of the $16 million that the wealthy former venture capitalist is investing to help GOP candidates cut into large Democratic majorities in the Illinois Legislature this fall.

Rauner has said he wants to emulate the business-friendly agenda of former Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels – for whom Holcomb was a top Statehouse aide and campaign manager.

But Rauner said last year he wanted to “rip the economic guts out of Indiana,” and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence has frequently touted the state’s work to lure businesses from Illinois. Pence, who is now Donald Trump’s vice presidential running mate, just last week released a statement calling a company’s decision to move operations from

Court won’t reconsider redistricting ruling

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Supreme Court has denied a request to reconsider its ruling that a group’s initiative to change how legislative districts are drawn is ineligible for the November ballot.

The court issued the ruling Tuesday on a 4-3 vote.

The Independent Maps coalition had collected about 563,000 signatures to ask voters whether legislative mapmaking power should be in the hands of an independent commission instead of lawmakers. The court ruled last month that the group’s proposal was unconstitutional.

It’s the second failed attempt to overhaul redistricting by petition in two years.

Independent Maps Chairman Dennis FitzSimons said in a statement that “Illinois voters have been denied their right

“He was instrumental in helping turn Indiana around and Bruce believes Eric will be a tremendous governor,” Schrimpf said.

Schrimpf didn’t immediately reply to a Eric message asking wheth- Holcomb er Rauner is making other out-of-state campaign contributions this year.

The Montana-based National Institute on Money in State Politics, which tracks political spending and advocates for transparency, listed a $100,000 contribution in the 2002 Pennsylvania governor’s race as Rauner’s only donation of at least the size he gave to Holcomb outside Illinois.

The Pence administration said more than 50 Illinois-based companies have moved operations to Indiana in the past decade. Gregg campaign spokesman Jeff Harris pointed to Indiana’s stagnant average wages and Holcomb’s support for the state’s

religious objections law, which prompted an uproar last year over whether it would sanction discrimination against gay people.

“He’s pledged to continue Mike Pence’s economic policies which have hurt so many Hoosier families and embarrassed our state in eyes of the world,” Harris said. “As our competition, Gov. Rauner would love to see Indiana continue down this path – it will only make his record look better.”

Holcomb started from nearly zero in his campaign account ahead of the GOP state committee’s nomination vote – while Gregg had about $5.8 million in campaign money at the end of June.

Illinois State Board of Elections and Federal Election Commission records show Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s campaign committee made one Illinois donation – $1,000 in September 2008 to the Federation of Women Contractors political action committee.

The Journal Star reported that Trump has donated more money to past Illinois races than any of the current major party candidates and their running mates.

Rauner policies hit during rally held by clergy, union

SPRINGFIELD – A group of clergy and union members rallied outside the state Capitol to protest what they say is Gov. Bruce Rauner’s efforts to cut social service costs.

Springfield home-care provider and Service Employees International Union member Gail Hamilton on Monday called Rauner and legislators who stand with him “immoral.”

The rally was part of effort in about 25 state capitals organizers called the “Higher Ground Moral Day of Action.”

The Rauner administration has said the cut in overtime for care workers who serve disabled residents, which was

Man given 6 months for red-light camera scheme

CHICAGO – A man who participated in a bribery scheme that steered $100 million in red-light camera contracts to an Arizona company has received a six-month prison sentence.

U.S. District Judge Virginia Kendall in sentencing Martin O’Malley on Monday said the case against the man at the center of the bribery couldn’t have been prosecuted without his testimony.

O’Malley told the judge his actions were “deplorable.”

The 75-year-old O’Malley faced up to five years in prison after admitting he passed $560,000 in cash bribes from Redflex Traffic Systems Inc. to Chicago City Hall insider John Bills.

Kendall last month sentenced the 55-year-old Bills, who was convicted in January, to 10 years in prison for bribery, conspiracy and extortion.

LAS VEGAS – A British man pleaded guilty Tuesday in U.S. federal court to trying to grab a police officer’s gun and open fire at a June campaign rally for presidential candidate Donald Trump in Las Vegas.

Standing before a judge in orange jail clothes with the word “detainee” across his back, Michael Steven Sandford acknowledged that he has been treated in the past for mental illness.

Court documents said Sandford previously told a federal agent that he drove from California to Las Vegas with a plan to kill Trump.

“I plead guilty, your honor,” Sandford told U.S. District Judge James Mahan when asked for his plea to being an illegal alien in possession of a firearm and disrupting an official function.

“I tried to take a gun from a policeman to shoot someone with, and I’m pleading guilty,” he said.

Americans got raise last year for first time since ’07

WASHINGTON – In a long-awaited sign that middle-class Americans are finally seeing real economic gains, U.S. households got a raise last year after seven years of stagnant incomes. Rising pay also lifted the poorest households, cutting poverty by the sharpest amount

in nearly a half-century.

Higher minimum wages in many states and tougher competition among businesses to fill jobs pushed up pay, while low inflation made those paychecks stretch further. The figures show that the growing economy is finally benefiting a greater share of American households.

The median U.S. household’s income rose 5.2 percent in 2015 to an inflation-adjusted level of $56,516, the Census Bureau said Tuesday. That is the largest one-year gain on data stretching back to 1967.

Samsung’s fix for Galaxy Note 7 is no full recharge

SEOUL, South Korea –Samsung plans to issue a software update for its recalled Galaxy Note 7 smartphones that will prevent them from overheating by limiting battery recharges to 60 percent.

The front page of the Seoul Shinmun, a South Korean newspaper, carried a Samsung advertisement on Tuesday announcing the software update for any users of the Note 7 who may be disregarding its recall notice and continuing to use the smartphone.

Political risk for all in ‘deplorables’ debate The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – A war of words over Donald Trump’s “deplorables” is intensifying as Republicans and Democrats fight for political points over Hillary Clinton’s claim that many of the New York billionaire’s supporters are racist, sexist and homophobic.

Trump and his allies across the country insisted Tuesday that the Democratic presidential nominee’s comments reflect an out-of-touch elitist who looks down on working-class voters, akin to 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney’s assertion that 47 percent of Americans would never vote for him because they were dependent on the government. Democrats – and even some Republicans – however, warned that this debate could backfire on Trump, drawing new attention to white supremacists and hate groups attracted by his “America first” message.

Indeed, former KKK leader David Duke offered fresh praise for the way that Trump and running mate Mike Pence are handling the controversy. But not all Republicans were pleased.

“Let’s remember that, weird as it may seem, a lot of voters are only just now tuning in, so they may not be aware of the fact that David Duke, various KKK organizations, the alt-right en masse, Vladimir Putin and other foreign authoritarian enemies of America – people who really are deplorable – are supporting Trump,” said Liz Mair, a Washington-based Republican operative and a vocal Trump critic.

Speaking to donors in New York City on Friday, Clinton had said that half of Trump’s supporters were in “a basket of deplorables,” a crowd she described as racist, sexist, homophobic or xenophobic.

Back on the “deplorables’ front, Indiana Gov. Pence, Trump’s vice presidential running mate, refused anew on Tuesday to say whether white supremacist Duke was “deplorable.” Pence has disavowed Duke, but said he was “not in the name-calling business.”

Duke, a former KKK leader, was pleased with that.

“The whole idea that they were trying to make Pence call me names, basically, and he didn’t bite on that was a real positive thing for all of us,” Duke said.

Democrats have welcomed a debate that shines new light on some of the elements cheering Trump’s candidacy.

In November, Clinton will need a strong turnout among President Barack Obama’s coalition of minorities, women and millennials. Her campaign argues that Trump will struggle to connect with such voters if he’s viewed as fostering white supremacists, a group commonly referred to as the “alt-right.”

“Bigotry is deplorable and I think she should stand by her guns,” said Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., a Clinton ally.

Prosecutor: 7 on trial for actions, not beliefs

PORTLAND, Ore. – The armed occupiers who seized a remote bird sanctuary in Oregon early this year are being tried because their actions intimidated and threatened federal employees, not because they challenged the government’s land policies, a prosecutor said Tuesday as a trial began for seven people accused in the standoff.

During his opening statement, Geoffrey Barrow dismissed claims by group leader Ammon Bundy and others that the takeover was a legitimate protest of federal land management. Bundy and his brother Ryan, who’s also on trial, are part of a Nevada ranching family embroiled in a long-running dispute over land use.

“Everyone in this great nation has a right to his or her beliefs. We are not prosecuting the defendants because we don’t like what they think or said,” Barrow told jurors. “We are prosecuting them because of what they did.”

He also said one of the participants in the standoff will testify against his for-

Marcus Mumford, the defense attorney for Ammon Bundy, said in his opening statement that the occupation had nothing to do with impeding federal employees.

Ammon Bundy “did what he did to demand accountability from the federal government,” Mumford said. “He demanded the federal government obey the law – the nerve.”

Bundy grew up the son of a rancher, Mumford said, and became a “reluctant activist” on matters involving government overreach and Western lands.

Mumford repeatedly asserted that Bundy was trying to legally take the refuge land by a practice known as adverse possession, which is a way to gain title to land by occupying it for a period of time.

U.S. District Court Judge Anna Brown stepped in to tell jurors that the concept of adverse possession is not being litigated.

Mumford ended his statement by noting that Bundy and his followers never aimed a gun at anyone.

Referencing the fatal shooting by police of occupation spokesman Robert “Lavoy” Finicum, he said only one side of the standoff shot someone. “And it wasn’t Mr. Bundy.”

Bad choices lead to traffic deaths One day in the not-too-distant future, cars may be able to drive themselves. Until then, it will be up to people to make good choices and prevent traffic fatalities.

Invariably, some do not. Although traffic deaths have fallen far below where they were 10 years ago, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that human factors contribute to most traffic crashes.

In 2015, for the first time in 10 years, fatalities increased across the United States, with 35,092 people killed, according to data released in August by the NHTSA. It was a 7.2 percent increase over 2014.

Almost half of passenger-vehicle occupants who were killed in 2015 were not wearing seat belts, despite laws requiring their use, federal data show.

About a third of fatalities were in crashes that involved drunken drivers or speeding, the agency said. Alcohol-related deaths increased 3.2 percent in 2015, to 10,265, according to the traffic safety administration.

Illinois lawmakers have passed some measures recently designed to stem the tide of drunken driving, both by first-time and repeat offenders.

This year, instead of requiring mandatory one-year driving suspensions for all first-time DUI offenders, drivers convicted have the option of obtaining a restricted driving permit and installing an ignition interlock device that will not allow their car to start if it detects alcohol on the driver’s breath. The device also has a camera that ensures the correct person is driving the vehicle.

Another law passed in 2015 increased to five years the amount of time that repeat DUI offenders must drive without incident with a restricted permit and ignition interlock before their license will be reinstated.

However, we’ve seen numerous examples recently of people who choose to ignore the rules.

In August, a Sandwich man was sentenced to four years in prison after being convicted of driving under the influence for a sixth time.

Earlier this month, an Iowa man was arrested on DUI charges for a fifth time after a state trooper stopped his vehicle at the DeKalb Oasis on Interstate 88 and found an open container of vodka inside.

When asked how much he had had to drink, the driver responded “too much,” court records show.

DeKalb County prosecutors also asked a judge this month to revoke the probation of a South Elgin man who twice has been convicted of DUI, including for a 2010 crash that injured several people. Prosecutors said he has not followed the terms of a work release sentence for a 2015 incident in Sycamore, in which he was acquitted of DUI but found guilty of aggravated driving with a revoked license.

None of those drivers had licenses at the time of their arrests, but police said that did not stop them from getting behind the wheel.

There is no law that can prevent people from making bad choices.

Other than by refraining from drinking and driving, wearing seat belts and driving defensively, the public can help make roads safer by reporting erratic drivers on the roads to local police.

Enforcing existing laws and working to take intoxicated motorists off the road are the last, and unfortunately, sometimes the only defense against risky behavior that leads to thousands of fatalities every year.

To the Editor: Regarding “Our View: DeKalb Could Have Monitored Power Deal” from Sept. 8, we want to apologize again for our mistake in failing to reduce the electric rate during July and August per the aggregation agreement between the City of DeKalb and Homefield Energy.

Upon learning of the problem, we immediately took full responsibility, corrected the problem and announced our intention to issue refunds to those DeKalb residents who are part of the aggregation program.

Each year, as we have new contracts begin, we adjust the electric rates for thousands of residential and small commercial customers in the 400 communities we serve across Illinois. In the midst of a systems upgrade to better serve our customers, we failed to identify that the rate decrease was not implemented as planned. This matter has triggered an examination of our processes to ensure that all future rate changes are implemented accurately for customers in DeKalb and all other communities we serve.

We thank the DeKalb residents who notified the appropriate city officials.

We are working with DeKalb city officials to ensure refunds get to each resident participating in the aggregation program and we will be communicating the refund process to customers directly in the coming days.

To the Editor: So long, NFL. As long as you condone players protesting our national anthem, and in turn our nation, I will no longer watch any NFL games.

As long as these protesters are in NFL uniforms, they are representing the NFL and you are permitting it. My company would have fired me if I’d done something similar to this as a company representative, but you are paying these guys and placating them for their actions. I hold you accountable!

On their own time dressed in their street clothes, they can protest all they want. That’s one of the freedoms of America, the America they are trashing.

If you don’t like it here, then go someplace else you would like to live, but as long as you live here, respect our country and abide by its laws and enjoy its freedoms.

American protest is an act of faith It keeps getting bigger.

One might have expected last month’s protest by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, his refusal to stand for the national anthem, to have blown over by now.

Instead, it has caught fire. Sunday, members of the Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs all staged protests of their own. This was in addition to earlier protests by soccer star Megan Rapinoe and members of the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks. There have even been reports of the phenomenon spreading to high school and college games.

All of this in support of Kaepernick, who said, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.” Apparently, he’s struck a nerve.

For the record, yes, I do stand when the anthem is played. But I don’t do it for America. America breaks my heart on a daily basis.

So, I stand for what America is supposed to be, what America could be if it ever took seriously its

But America has yet to do that, and Kaepernick is hardly the first person to notice.

On the last night of his life, Martin Luther King said: “All we say to America is, be true to what you said on paper.”

Kaepernick is not even the first athlete to snub the rituals of American patriotism. “I cannot stand and sing the anthem,” a baseball player once wrote. “I cannot salute the flag; I know that I am a black man in a white world.” The man’s name was Jackie Robinson.

Point being, I have no quarrel with Kaepernick.

Others do. The internet is awash in videos of his burning jersey.

Either way events turn out, Putin wins in Syria The latest partial truce in Syria got off to a bad start Monday, with the regime of Bashar Assad reported to be bombing and shelling the very areas the deal is supposed to cover.

Whether the truce will ever get off the ground will likely depend on whether Moscow can restrain its client dictator, who hours before the cease-fire began repeated his vow to recapture all of Syria by force.

But Vladimir Putin’s regime at least has a motive to succeed: If it does, it will have realized Putin’s aspiration of imposing his will on the United States.

When Russia launched its direct military intervention in Syria a year ago, President Barack Obama predicted its only result would be a quagmire. Instead, the agreement

struck by Secretary of State John Kerry on Friday with his Russian counterpart offers Putin everything he sought. The Assad regime, which was tottering a year ago, will be entrenched and its opposition dealt a powerful blow.

The United States will meanwhile grant Putin’s long-standing demand that it join with Russia in targeting groups deemed to be terrorists. If serious political negotiations on Syria’s future ever take place – an unlikely prospect, at least in the Obama administration’s remaining months – the Assad regime and its Russian and Iranian backers will hold a commanding position.

In exchange for these sweeping concessions, which essentially abandon Obama’s onetime goal of

freeing Syria from Assad and make the United States a junior partner of Russia in the Middle East’s most important ongoing conflict, Kerry promises that humanitarian lifelines will be opened into the besieged city of Aleppo and other areas subjected to surrender-or-starve tactics. The Syrian air force will supposedly be banned from dropping “barrel bombs,” chlorine and other munitions on many areas where rebels are based – though there seem to be loopholes in the deal, and its text has not been made public.

If that really happens, and lives are saved, that will be a positive benefit. Perhaps it’s the only one available to a U.S. policy that swears off, as doomed to failure, the same limited military measures that

Russia has employed with success.

But Putin and Assad have agreed to multiple previous truces, in Syria and, in Putin’s case, Ukraine – and violated all of them.

Their reward has been to gain territory and strengthen their strategic positions, while receiving from the United States not sanction but more concessions and proposals for new deals. If the regimes observe their promises in this case, it may be because the time to exploit this U.S. administration – which has retreated from its red lines, allowed Russia to restore itself as a Middle East power and betrayed those Syrians who hoped to rid themselves of a blood-drenched dictator – is finally running out.

Top 5 DeKalb-Sycamore games since 2000

ecarifio@shawmedia.com For as long as the DeKalb-Sycamore football showdown has been sponsored – dating back to 2000 – there hasn’t exactly been a lot of close games.

In fact, just four times in that span the game has been decided by a touchdown or less. Also, the series has been one-sided, with the Spartans winning 13 of the 16 battles entering this year.

Still, that doesn’t mean there haven’t been thrillers and other exciting games. So, heading into the 2016 showdown at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Huskie Stadium – the first year playing as the First National Challenge – here’s the top five games the teams have played since 2000.

September 10, 2010 – Sycamore 20, DeKalb 13

For the second time in Castle Challenge history, both teams entered the game with perfect records. DeKalb hadn’t made the playoffs since 1989 and wanted to make a statement.

The Barbs fell short by a touchdown, despite scoring first on an 82yard pass from Brian Sisler to Javon Scruggs.

But Eric Ray was too much for the Barbs, scoring all three Sycamore touchdowns in the win. Ray had a 60yard punt return in the third quarter to push the lead to 20-7. Spencer Blank-Jones answered back with a 4-yard scoring run to cut the lead six, but neither team scored again.

Even though they lost, the Barbs still accomplished their goal of making the postseason, finishing 5-5. The Spartans finished 9-2.

Also notable, it was the first time the teams played as Northern Illinois Big 12 East rivals. They were both in the Western Sun for the previous four years.

September 9, 2011 – Sycamore 33, DeKalb 21

Once again, both teams were 2-0. And once again, the Spartans came out on top as they went on to a 7-4 season, while the Barbs ended up 4-5 and missing the playoffs after the berth the year before.

But the game featured two very high-impact newcomers. Sycamore sophomore tight end Ben Niemann, caught three touchdown passes and had 110 receiving yards. DeKalb freshman running back Dre Brown had 176 yards on the ground and two scores.

Niemann is now a linebacker for Iowa, while Brown is on the Illinois

DeKalb started the game by successfully recovering an onside kick, but Sycamore scored first and led 12-0 before the Barbs were on the board.

Sycamore led, 19-7, at halftime.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Brown scored from two yards out to bring the score to 26-21, but Sycamore’s Trent Greer answered back with a score to push the lead back to two scores.

September 7, 2007 – DeKalb 28, Sycamore 21

It sure did seem like a millennium since the Barbs last beat the Spartans going into that game. After they won, they must have partied like it was 1999.

DeKalb snapped a seven-game losing streak to Sycamore, their first win over their rivals since a 47-42 win in 1999.

The game was tied in the fourth when DeKalb put together what would be the winning drive, aided by a roughing-the-punter penalty and a pass interference. Mandel Williams rumbled in from four yards out with the decisive score with 7:34 left in the game.

Sycamore still had two more

possessions, but couldn’t score on either.

The Spartans fell to 1-2 with the loss but still made the postseason.

The Barbs were 2-1 after the win but ended the season at 4-5 and couldn’t return to the playoffs for the second straight year.

August 29, 2003 – Sycamore 22, DeKalb 20

It was a rough stretch for the Barbs. They were coming off an 0-9 season and looking for any kind of a spark in the season opener.

They came close, but Adam Crouch pulled down quarterback Joey Emanuelson on the two-point conversion attempt with 1:36 left, preserving the win. Emanuelson scored on a 10-yard bootleg to put the Barbs in the chance to tie.

Toby Boltz had a big game on the ground for the Spartans, running for 149 yards and a touchdown as the Spartans never trailed, but never did pull away from the Barbs, either.

DeKalb would finish the year 1-8, then go 0-9 again in 2004. Sycamore, after a playoff berth in 2002, finished 4-5 and wouldn’t make the playoffs again until 2007.

September 19, 2015 – DeKalb 31, Sycamore 28

This game wasn’t played under the lights at Huskie Stadium. In fact, it wasn’t played under any lights.

Inclement weather pushed the game from Friday to Saturday afternoon at DeKalb High, and the teams put on a show worth the wait.

DeKalb freshman Connor Tierney booted the winning field goal with 4.2 seconds left from 30 yards out, giving the Barbs their second straight win over the Spartans.

The Barbs scored first, but Sycamore took the lead on a 3-yard run

Scoring got crazy in the fourth, when after Sycamore’s Trace Hefler hauled in a 7-yard pass from Brett Bemis for a 21-14 Spartan lead, Cole Tucker returned the kickoff to tie the game for DeKalb.

Pawola put the Spartans back up with a 63-yard run with 6:29 left, but Tucker scored his fourth touchdown on a 17-yard pass from Derek Kyler with 4:19 left – that coming on a fourthand-goal play.

The loss dropped the Spartans to 1-3, but Sycamore still ended up in the postseason after closing the year with five straight wins. DeKalb finished 9-3.

SYCAMORE – It wouldn’t be a meeting between Sycamore and DeKalb without a certain level of excitement involved.

The Sycamore soccer team escaped with a 2-1 home victory over DeKalb on Tuesday night in dramatic fashion.

The excitement came in the second half when Sycamore (6-5-1 overall, 2-1 Northern Illinois Big 12) held a 2-1 lead over their DeKalb (3-4-1, 1-1 NIB 12).With 26:32 left in the game, it appeared that Barb forward Angel Martinez tied the game after his shot found the back of the net. Immediately after the play, the referees met up and determined a handball in the box against Sycamore had occurred, erasing DeKalb’s goal, but awarding them a penalty kick.

Sycamore goalkeeper Patrik Smith then successfully saved Martinez’s penalty shot and preserved the one-goal lead.

“The explanation was that there was a handball by one of my players and a penalty shot was awarded,” Sycamore coach David Bachta said.

“The problem I had was that the whistle blew but the player took the shot. But when the whistle blows the ball should be dead. There were a lot of kids back there and it’s the referee’s call. I’ve been doing this a long time and I’ve been on both sides of a call like that.”

DeKalb put constant pressure on Sycamore throughout the game, specifically in the first half, but the Spartans were still able to get on the board first after a goal by Matthew Coulibaly with 22:32 left in the first half. Coulibaly also scored the Spartans second goal with 32:40 left in the second half.

“It comes down to our players keeping shape,” Bachta said. “We watch a lot of the English Premier League and those teams constantly have to defend and counter-attack and we have to do that too. We don’t have the kids to be able to keep possession for 80 minutes. What we’re going to do is defend and defend well and keep possession when we can.

We have to start doing that a little better.”

Kaneland front row leads Knights past Barbs

sports@daily-chronicle.com DEKALB – Led by their front row, the Kaneland volleyball team beat DeKalb in straight sets, 25-16, 25-23.

The Knights’ net front presence was one of the major keys of their success tonight. The other was limiting their errors. In the second game of the match, Kaneland (16-3 overall, 1-0 Northern Illinois Big 12) was able to limit themselves to two service errors and only one error on the attack. That, combined with the coverage provided by front row players Chloe Filipski, Cameron Wyant and Alex Anderson, was enough to power the Knights to victory.

“Going into the season, I was actually a little worried about our front row,” Knights coach Cynthia Violett said. “We spent a lot of time on our blocking and it is really nice to see them come along. DeKalb cut down on their mistakes in the second game and came back really well. We were able to block well enough in the second game to win.”

Filipski led the Knights on offense with nine kills and only one error.

“It’s all about timing and making sure you’re behind the ball,” Filipski said. “For me, I have to do that and make sure I am square on my right side.”

“We work really hard on spacing,” Wyant said. “Repetition every day in practice. I think it really shows how hard we worked in practice.”

For the Barbs (2-2, 0-1), coach Jamie

DiMaggio is looking forward to watching her team play more games.

“We have a game Thursday and a tournament this weekend,” DiMaggio said. “We’ve had a slow start to our season and it will be nice to get the experience that every other team has right now. Our confidence is down and we’ve been making too many errors. Against a team like Kaneland, who does not make errors, we can’t play like we are scared of something. We’ve come out tense and overthinking it on the floor.”

The Barbs were led in kills by Jasmine Kemp and Hannah Oehlberg, who had eight and seven kills, respectively. JC Longeville chipped in with 15 assists on the day as well.

“I agree (with DiMaggio) we were a little too tense during the game,” Kemp said. “It’s all mental, in my opinion. We were so focused on winning and getting all of the big swings – and afraid of making small errors.We need to stop making things so complicated and just play; we need to push each other because we know we all have so much potential and talent, but aren’t quite showing it yet.”

“We have to work on not thinking about all of the touches,”Oehlberg said.

“We just have to get the ball up and give 100 percent effort, all of the time.

It starts with high energy in practice and going for everything in practice because there’s no mistakes in practice.”

The Barbs will travel to Yorkville on Thursday for a 6 p.m. start. Kaneland will have a week off, hosting Morris on Tuesday, at 6 p.m.

Mize won, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, against Hui Zhu. Brooklyn Scott and Kate Majerus won at No. 2 doubles, 6-4, 6-3, against KeKe Catchings and Joy Kewih. At No. 3 doubles, Rachel Johnson and Haley Spineak added the third Sycamore win, 6-1, 6-1.

Karissa Olsen beat Emily McConnell Hatch at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-2, for a DeKalb point. Meghan Hanson and Helene Collin picked up a 7-5, 6-1 win over Kiyas Kousoulas and Ellie Wilson at No. 1 doubles for the other Barbs point.

Hare out ‘extended period of time’ after injury

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Drew Hare may have played his last game at Northern Illinois.

The senior quarterback is out for “an extended period of time,” Huskies coach Rod Carey said on Tuesday, after suffering an ankle and knee injury on the same play during the third quarter of Saturday night’s loss at South Florida.

Carey said that he will probably miss the majority of the season and there’s no guarantee he will come back this year – saying the family is considering getting surgery on the knee, which is the more severe of the two.

“My heart is absolutely broken for Drew on this thing,” said Carey, who did not give an official diagnosis. “Him and I have been in a ton of conversation. He is one of the best quarterbacks that’s ever played here and you can’t deny that. People may have different opinions about that, but I think he’s one of four that’s won a conference championship.

“I’m not a big numbers guy, but I’ve been told he’s pretty high up on the numbers stuff. I’ve been fortunate enough in my time here to be around Chandler (Harnish) and Jordan (Lynch) and Drew, and leadership-wise, all three of

those are the top leaders probably that I’ve ever been around, My heart is broken for him from that aspect, because I know he’s struggling with it, too.”

Hare has had a successful – but injury-plagued – career at NIU. During his sophomore season, he helped the Huskies win the 2014 Mid-American Conference Championship.

Last season, he set an NIU record by going 29 for 32 against Ball State, along with 363 yards. However, he suffered a season-ending Achilles injury at Toledo on Nov. 3. After rehabbing the injury in the offseason, he came back as a senior this season – only to suffer the injury in the second game of the year.

Carey said the Huskies will look into the option of a medical redshirt for Hare, who is a redshirt senior, but didn’t sound optimistic.

“We’ll look at all the options, but my understanding of the medical stuff, for a sixth year is very hard to obtain,” Carey said. “It really has to be extenuating circumstances that usually don’t involve football.”

With Hare on the shelf for an unknown amount of time, redshirt sophomore Ryan Graham takes the reins at quarterback for the second year in a row. Graham helped lead the Huskies

to victories at Toledo and Buffalo and against Western Michigan before suffering a knee injury in the regular season finale against Ohio.

Carey also said that while Anthony Maddie switched over to wide receiver during fall camp, he will return to the quarterback position, too.

“Ryan has won games here and crucial games and certainly that confidence helps him and we – me, the other coaches, the other players – have certainly seen that and been with him on that,” Carey said. “There’s a comfort and probably a confidence there.”

Carey said that cornerback Anthony Brooks will also miss an “extended period of time,” with a hip flexor injury.

Carey addresses early season struggles:

The Huskies are off to their first 0-2 start since 2008 and they are coming off an ugly 48-17 loss at South Florida.

Against the Bulls, the Huskies were outgained 658-318 and in the 40-34 triple-overtime loss at Wyoming, they were called for 12 penalties for 106 yards.

“I don’t want to paint a bleak picture either – I think we’ve done a lot of things good,” Carey said. “I think all games come down to four or five plays. Those four or five plays can come at any time.

game. I think we haven’t been on the side of those critical plays.

“The other area is certainly consistency, on both sides. Defense has looked good on first and second down and then give up a big play on third down. Offense has got first down, first down, first down and then all of a sudden, the next three plays don’t go anywhere.”

Carey ‘super pumped’ about Lewis making Saints roster: Northern Illinois got a

dose of good news last week, when it was announced that former Huskie wide receiver Tommylee Lewis made the roster for the New Orleans Saints.

Lewis, who made the team as an undrafted free agent, was an All-American for the Huskies during the 2013 season.

“I’m just super, super pumped about it,” Carey said last week. “He deserved it. I’m shouting from the mountaintops the whole time. I was fortunate enough to coach him for three years. That kid’s every bit of a pro player you would ever want, and I’m sure glad he made the Saints. He’ll make a difference for them, too.”

Lewis joins Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman Doug Free and San Francisco 49ers defensive back Jimmie Ward as the only former Huskies to be active on an NFL roster.

LAKE FOREST – Leonard Floyd led all Bears outside linebackers in playing time Sunday in the season opener in Houston. The team’s top draft pick was on the field for 60 of the 75 snaps on defense, a sign of confidence from coach John Fox and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio that Floyd can handle the NFL even after a “choppy” preseason.

“He’s a gifted athlete, both in coverage and rush,” Fox said Tuesday. “I think you kinda saw on the sack that he’s got the ability. Luckily, we had good coverage that made the quarterback hold the ball.

He’s got good speed off the edge. He’s got good speed in coverage. He’s got no problem bending. He does have good speed, so he’s got pretty good lateral movement as far as pursuing the ball. He’ll just keep continue to grow and get better.”

Fox acknowledged that they “probably would have spelled [Floyd] a few plays,” and the defense preferred to not be on the field so long, but they now have a lot more film on Floyd to continue to hone his abilities. Floyd finished his NFL debut with six tackles, and he split a sack with Eddie Goldman. Fox explained how, from a run-defense perspective, Floyd has some things to improve.

“A couple of misfits, as far as how to

go down through the tight end,” Fox said.

“I think that happens to almost every outside ‘backer or edge rusher, 4-3 end in this league, because you’re getting asked to basically play a gap, both inside and out, and be right.”

Sitton’s opener: Coming against a good Texans defense and having been with the Bears for only six days, Josh Sitton showed why the Bears made the aggressive move to sign him.

“I think he did pretty remarkable, to be honest with you, especially on the road, noisy stadium, silent count, all the things that go into playing in an indoor noisy stadium on foreign soil,” Fox said.

“I thought he did an outstanding job and he’ll just get better.”

Fox’s admission: It appeared the Texans got a favorable spot on Brock Osweiler’s third-down sneak that led to Houston’s go-ahead touchdown. Fox and the Bears’ coaches had time to consider challenging during the measurement but chose not to, something the head coach regrets, even though spot challenges are hard to win.

“Hindsight, I wish I would have challenged it,” Fox said. “… Even at the measurement, it was by a hair. So whenever there’s a scrum like that in a quarterback sneak, my experience has not been good as far as the spot specifically. If they ruled it a first down, if there’s not irrefutable evidence, it doesn’t change.”

Cooking can be the best lesson learned in college

The start of the school year brings a serious dilemma for today’s college students, far beyond which major or roommate to choose: whether to invest in the dining plan or pick up a spatula. With rising college costs dogging families, the decision can have a considerable financial impact.

A meal plan can cost around $3,000 a year; with smart budgeting, cooking meals instead could cost half as much, or even less.

Even as college campuses are scrambling to offer increased options on dining hall

menus, from vegan breakfast burritos to hand-rolled sushi, dormitories and on-campus apartments are being outfitted with full kitchens, making it easier for students to ditch the meal plan.

For my daughter, a theater arts major whose irregular rehearsal schedule does not always mesh with dining hall hours, moving from the dorm into a campus apartment with a kitchen after freshman year offered her a chance to eat on her own time – and required a crash course in basic cooking skills. A heads-up for other parents: Teach your kids how to cook real food – not just microwave meals – before it’s

required for actual survival.

For gluten-free chef and blogger Phoebe Lapine, 30, the switch to home-cooked meals when she moved into an apartment for her junior year at Brown University was a welcome change and a valuable rite of passage.

“It’s an important part of your pre-real-world education,” Lapine said in an email. “The first year out of college is one of the hardest for a 20-something. Many are moving to new cities, working long hours at entry-level jobs and learning to take care of basic needs on limited salaries. Knowing how to cook is a huge leg up.”

Tips for preparing quick meals Sheet pan suppers and muffin tin meals: A sheet pan, a handful of ingredients and less than half an hour are all it takes to make fast meals full of oven-roasted flavor – not to mention cleanup is a breeze. Rotate the pan halfway through the baking time to help ensure even cooking, and if you’re using an older oven that seems unreliable, consider spending less than $10 on an oven thermometer so you can set it to the correct temperature. It’s not uncommon for older ovens to be inaccurate by as much as 100 degrees. Just as a cookie sheet can be put to work to make supper, muffin tins can make more than breakfast food. Layer wonton wrappers with ricotta cheese, vegetables and tomato sauce for individual lasagnas, or follow the same method with salsa and cheddar cheese for a Mexican-inspired version.

Blender basics: Although an electric blender more commonly may be used for making smoothies and shakes, it’s also a handy tool for sauces, soups and a host of other recipes, from hummus to salsa, especially if you don’t own a food processor. Be judicious when pushing those buttons, as ingredients can go quickly from chunky to puréed; it’s a good idea to take advantage of the pulse function if you want to retain some texture.

Transfer to the stove top (off the heat).

Invert the squash halves. Use a fork to shred the squash flesh into noodle-like strands.

Top with the chickpea mixture and the roasted squash seeds. Season lightly with salt and pepper; serve right away.

Evenly divide the ricotta-spinach-mozzarella blend mixture on the last layer of wonton wrappers, then finish by evenly dividing the remaining marinara sauce, about a tablespoon of shredded mozzarella, and some freshly ground black pepper. (At this point, you can cover the entire pan with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and refrigerate overnight.)

Bake (middle rack) for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the cheese on top is melted, browned and bubbling.

Serve hot, or let cool completely before storing.

Dear Reader: Neck pain affects almost everyone at some time. Besides the physical discomfort, neck pain can trigger headaches and cause numbness, tingling or weakness in your arms. You might have trouble sleeping and difficulty turning your head.

If you suffer from constant neck pain, talk to your doctor. Neck pain that is constant, day after day for many months, is unusual and might have more serious causes. Your doctor can check to see if it is resulting from a medical condition such as arthritis.

Most neck pain is intermittent rather than constant, however. Such intermittent pain comes from muscle strains and tension caused by everyday situations such as slouching, poor posture or sleeping with your neck twisted.

For intermittent neck pain, try ice and heat therapy. Ice applied right after an acute injury such as a strain helps control immediate pain, stiffness and inflammation. Apply an ice pack for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, several times a day. (If you don’t have an ice pack handy, a bag of frozen vegetables can accomplish the same thing.) If the pain lingers more than 72 hours, switch to hot compresses or a heating pad, or take a warm shower.

Keep neck muscles strong and flexible by stretching them to further relieve soreness. Other treatments include acupuncture and the Alexander technique.

Acupuncture uses hair-thin needles to stimulate specific points on the body to trigger processes that relieve pain. The Alexander technique teaches you how to avoid unnecessary muscle tension by improving posture and alignment.

The best treatment for neck pain is prevention. Here are some ways to prevent it: • When sitting for long periods, avoid slouching or sitting with your head tilted forward. Sit straight, with your lower back supported by a pillow or lumbar support, feet flat on the floor and shoulders relaxed.

Stand every 20 minutes and stretch your neck muscles.

• Adjust your computer monitor so the top is at eye level. Use a document holder that holds your work at the same level as the screen.

• Position your car seat to a more upright position that supports your head and lower back. Avoid having to reach for the steering wheel. Your arms should be slightly flexed.

• Circular round foam pillows that wrap around your neck may relieve neck stress by supporting your neck when you sit or sleep.

• When you read in bed, use a wedgeshaped pillow to support your back and keep your neck in a neutral position.

If you think the problem is due to pillows that don’t support your neck at night, consider buying a memory foam pillow that adjusts to provide the needed support.

As I stress constantly, counting losers and winners when the dummy first appears is a vital step in accurate declarer-play. An ounce of effort then will save a pound of pain later when you go down in a contract that you should have made.

In this example, how should South play in four hearts after West leads the spade queen?

South opened with a textbook vulnerable weak two-bid: a good sixcard suit and 6-10 high-card points.

North took a shot at game, but if he had used the artificial two-no-trump inquiry, South would have rebid three no-trump to show a really good suit. Then North could have passed and had nine top tricks: two spades, six hearts and one club.

In four hearts, South has four losers -- one spade, one diamond and two clubs -- and those same nine winners. From where might a 10th trick come?

The chance of two club winners is very low. Instead, declarer should hope for a 4-3 diamond break and establish the diamond jack as a trick.

However, that requires ruffing three times in hand, so South needs four dummy entries. Given the spade lead has already removed the spade king, these must be the spade ace, both hearts and the club ace. Declarer must work on diamonds immediately.

At trick two, he plays a low diamond from the board. Suppose East wins with the nine and returns his second spade. South wins with the ace, ruffs a diamond, plays a heart to the 10, trumps a diamond, crosses to the heart queen, ruffs a third diamond, and draws trumps. Finally, declarer plays a club to the ace and discards a black-suit loser on the diamond jack.
