AMVETS honors local heroes in ceremony, remembers 9/11

DeKALB – Fifteen years after the tragic events of 9/11, Jim Furry of DeKalb wanted to not only find a way to remember the victims and first responders of the terror attacks, but also give recognition and thanks to local heroes.

Furry is the adjutant for American Veterans (AMVETS) Post 90. Furry helped AMVETS plan and host the Honoring Our Heroes event Saturday at its post, 421 Oak St. in DeKalb.

“There is an MIA/ POW day, and 9/11 is now Patriots’ Day, but there is no day to celebrate the police, fire and health care workers that make sacrifices and put their lives at risk every day,” Furry said. “We wanted to take the day and dedicate it to local heroes and patriots, to say we appreciate and thank them.”

The event began with a Heartland Mobile Unit blood drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a free hot dog lunch. Event attendees also could stop by reception tables with information about AMVETS, the DeKalb County Veterans Assistance Commission, veteran benefits, KishHealth Systems and DeKalb police and fire department programs.

At 2 p.m., the honor ceremony began with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. After the moment of silence, a luminaria

ceremony was held. Before the ceremony, luminaria bags could be bought for $4 each. The names of nearly 100 personal heroes, including John Wayne and Bob Hope, were written on the bags and read aloud during the ceremony.

After the luminaria ceremony, plaques were given to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, the DeKalb Fire Department, the DeKalb Police Department, NIU’s Department of Police and Public Safety and KishHealth System, part of Northwestern Medicine.

DeKalb Mayor John Rey, who presented a plaque to members of the DeKalb Police Department, said the event was an opportunity to appreciate local heroes.

“Heroes are individuals that exhibit selflessness and willingness to put their life and safety on the line to secure the freedoms we enjoy,” Rey said. “We were able to recognize those heroes and their actions.”

The ceremony concluded with a rifle salute by the AMVETS Honor Guard. After the ceremony, the band Stroker Red performed from 3 to 6 p.m.

DeKalb Fire Chief Eric Hicks accepted the fire department’s plaque and said he was honored and humbled by the event.

“It’s really an honor to be recognized, especially when veterans and the public come together to thank us for doing our jobs,” Hicks said. “It’s humbling to be appreciated and thanked by the community.”

Grand reopening celebrates restoration of 1930s DeKalb library

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The grand opening Saturday of the DeKalb Public Library’s refurbished Haish building culminated a decade-long process of planning and construction that has brought the community a gem, and made good use of a famous donor’s money, library officials said.

“This will be here forever,” DeKalb Public Library Director Dee Coover said. “Mr. Haish would be proud.”

Coover is set to retire at the end of the year, and the city already has begun seeking her replacement. But she was joined by a host of residents, community leaders, elected officials, library friends and employees, and members of the board of trustees in unveiling the completed Haish Memorial Library Building.

The total $25.3 million library project included building a new structure – which opened amid fanfare in January – and renovating the old one. Coover’s 10-year term as director started just as planning for all the work got in full swing.

“It is a legacy, but I don’t want to claim credit for it,” Coover said.

She said she believed that Jacob Haish, who died in 1926 just weeks before he would have turned 100, smiled down on Saturday’s grand reopening celebration.

The Haish building was restored to its 1930s glory, originally being built thanks to a $150,000 bequest from the barbed wire baron. It now includes a single-story structure with approximately 30-foot ceilings, a long bright corridor that has wooden tables with lighting affixed, wall-embedded bookshelves, a local history room, a public computer lab with more than two dozen computers, a collaboration room that offers video conferencing and 3D-printing technology, and ample seating in upholstered chairs.

It also is home to a designated teen room, lined with racks of books and made more appealing by its big-screen TV and video game console. The space also includes small conference rooms and chalkboard walls that youth can write on.

“I think he would be speechless,” DeKalb Library board President Virginia Cassidy said of the late Haish. “I think he would be so delighted that we have honored his gift and added on to that, and that the community is so ex-

In January, officials celebrated the opening of a newly constructed library edifice. Patrons continue to marvel at that building’s bright lighting, dramatic open entryway and voluminous lobby areas. It houses the library’s meeting rooms, children’s and adult materials areas, and the main circulation area with self-service checkout kiosks.

Shortly after the new building opened, work began to renovate the old one – named the Haish Memorial Library – instead of tearing it down. Part of the reason the library kept the old, cramped building is because it is on the National Register for Historic Places.

Also, it had been one of only three art deco libraries in the country, library officials said.

The combination of the new and old building has more than tripled the library’s size, growing from its one-building 19,800 square feet to a total of 65,000 square feet.

“This is a grand day for our community to celebrate the partnership of state and local government, together with private philanthropy, that has made this project a reality.”

Paying for the new library was met with some consternation. But, finally, pulling the money together for it came as a result of community support, private-sector collaboration and the state finally ponying up its portion – at least part of it, officials said.

In 2010, library officials applied for and were awarded a state grant for the construction project. Initially, $8 million was announced, but weeks after that notification, officials said, an

additional $3.6 million was tacked on, increasing the total state grant to $11.6 million.

Construction started in July 2015.

But soon after, work was delayed when the state failed in 2015 to have a budget in place. Without it, the state’s grant payments were postponed. So, library officials looked locally for the rest of the money, which came from the city, tax increment financing funds, loans from at least three area banks and private donations, library spokeswoman Edith Craig said.

State Rep. Bob Pritchard, R-Hinckley, praised the funding efforts to get the building open and to the point of Saturday’s big day. He also acknowledged the state’s IOU. “We’ve come through with $8 million, and we’ve got another roughly $4 million that we’re continuing to work on,” Pritchard said. “But given the state’s fiscal conditions, it’s not going to be soon. But it is a commitment, and I’m going to be persistent in making sure the state fulfills that commitment.”

2nd annual Volksfest celebrated in Genoa

news@daily-chronicle.com GENOA – While Saturday morning’s Volksmarchers got a little soggy on the 6- or 10-kilometer walking trail through Genoa, the skies cleared just in time for the Volksfest Craft Beer and Wine Fest that afternoon, where hundreds of residents and visitors gathered in Genoa’s Carroll Park for the city’s second annual Volksfest weekend.

The weekend festival, which was hosted by the Kishwaukee Valley Wanderers and the Genoa Chamber of Commerce, kicked off Friday night with several original singer-songwriters and bands who entertained guests in Carroll Park.

Saturday began with a Volksmarch, a noncompetitive 6- or 10-kilometer fitness walk that began and ended in Carroll Park.

Carolyn Tobinson, president of the Kishwaukee Valley Wanderers, said she originally had hoped to see 100 people walking, but with the rain, she was happy to have the 33 participants who walked despite the inclement weather.

“This helps bring people to town, and adds flavor to the community,” Tobinson said about the Volksmarch.

“We bring people together. It’s a fun weekend that offers such a variety of activities that a lot of different people can participate in. We want to share our well-kept secret about what a great community Genoa is.”

After the rain disappeared, folks headed back to Carroll Park for the Craft Beer and Wine Fest, which featured 12 breweries and one winery, most from within an hour of Genoa.

Brian Wallace, vice president of the Kishwaukee Valley Wanderers and co-organizer of Volksfest, said that while tasting and trying different beverages is fun, the event was about more than just the craft beers.

“I want to highlight our town and our park. We have a tremendous amount of things to do in this community that are underutilized,” he said.

“We want to include clubs and organizations that are local. We want people to spend their money locally and keep it local. This is a showcase of Genoa.”

Andrew Nordman, owner and brewer at Genoa’s Cademon Brewing, said Volksfest is his favorite beer festival of the year. He even brewed two special beers for the event – Rockin’ the Kish, which is a traditional German hefeweizen; and Volksbrau, which is a German stonebier.

munity and showcase interesting beers and meet interesting people,” he said. “This isn’t too small, it isn’t too big, so you can have great conversations and tell them about our beer and brewery. I love bringing my beer out to the masses.”

The Forge Brewhouse, located in Sycamore, was offering guests samples of several of their beers. Owner J.D. Heinrich said he wants to promote his local beer and let people know that everything is made in Syc-

amore.

“This is a small, laid-back festival, and I get to talk to a lot of people,” he said. “I want people to know that they don’t have to travel to get a great beer.”

Genoa resident Maureen Haloup attended Volksfest last year and couldn’t wait for this year’s event.

“This year is just as much fun. I’m really enjoying the beer and the music and food,” she said. “We need a community get-together, something that

bonds everyone.”

Genoa Mayor Mark Vicary described the Volksfest as a wonderful, unique event. He was pleased with the turnout, which had grown significantly from last year.

“This is a good opportunity for the community to get together and enjoy a beer and have some refreshments,” he said. “We want to establish a unique presence in DeKalb County and attract people to Genoa. I don’t know how many towns in Illinois have a walk in the morning and a beer fest in the afternoon.”

Miles Bugna of Genoa said he was excited to see that a lot of people came out for the festival.

“This is a great atmosphere, and I’m happy to support the community,” he said. “It’s nice to that Genoa is trying to grow and do more for everyone.”

Kate Appleby of Genoa was volunteering at several events throughout the weekend. Appleby said she wanted to give back to the community and help with the amazing weekend.

“It takes a whole village for this to be successful. All the proceeds stay local and go back to the community,” she said. “It’s so fun for everyone to be able to stay in town for a beer fest and live music.”

The Volksfest weekend concluded Sunday with the Boy Scout breakfast followed by the 13th annual Great Genoa Duck Race.

appointments on the agenda for the City Council’s regular meeting.

The mayor has made appointment recommendations for the city’s building code board of appeals and the landmark commission that aldermen will have to consider.

But what is likely to consume the meeting, which starts at 6 p.m. after the Committee of the Whole meeting an hour before, may be the video gaming terminal licenses. This summer, aldermen increased the initial and re-

newal fees at least tenfold. Some aldermen at that time predicted that the exponential increase would not have an impact on most owners’ revenues. But they also expressed a desire to curb the number of terminals.

There have been at least 10 new license requests to come before the council since the fee was increased, and all of them were approved. On advice of the city’s attorney, and even some aldermen’s suggestions, the City Council’s nod came because no rules were in

news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – Coloring mats, an inflatable slide and candy awaited those who visited the Sycamore Park District’s maintenance building Saturday to celebrate the halfway mark of the district’s $1 million public fundraising goal for several long-term projects.

Dan Gibble, the Sycamore Park District;s executive director, announced Saturday that the district had raised more than $600,000 for ACTION 2020, a seven-part, $13 million project that will see the construction of a community center, dog park, sled hill and splash pad, sports complex renovations and expansions, trail connections and a golf course irrigation system overhaul.

The Kish Health System and Brian Bemis Automotive Group were given naming rights for the sled hill and dog park, respectively, because of their large donations. The dog park was named the Brian Bemis Dog Park, while the sled hill has yet to be named.

“I think people will be looking back 50 years from now and say, ‘Wow, what a great decision,’ just like when we look back on the sport complex,”

Almost $10 million of the project will be raised through a bond referendum that Sycamore residents approved in 2014, and $2 million will come from grants, Strack said.

Gibble agreed that if the final $1 million can be raised in full, he would have his head shaved at another celebration.

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner put together a foundation last month to tap outside contributors for badly needed repairs to the state’s fairgrounds, marking another instance in which the Republican former venture capitalist said the private sector can help the financially strapped state.

But an Associated Press review of similar efforts shows that it will be far from a quick fix. Private foundations in other states consider themselves successful in raising at most around $4 million a year, while Illinois’ backlog of maintenance and repairs stands at nearly $200 million, according to the Rauner administration.

Even in Iowa, where 1 million regularly attend a storied state fair memorialized in a Broadway and movie musical, fundraisers boast that the fair’s foundation has collected $118 million over 23 years – or about 60 percent of what Illinois needs to raise.

The newly appointed head of the Illinois State Fairgrounds Foundation, John Slayton, acknowledged that the group has its work cut out for it, and isn’t promising miracles.

“It will take a long time to raise $180 million,” Slayton said, only slightly facetiously.

“The group wanted to get started,” said the Springfield banker, who for a quarter-century has been the Illinois

Man who killed woman in front of children sentenced

CHICAGO – A man who shot and killed his ex-girlfriend outside her Chicago apartment as their two small children watched has been sentenced to 45 years in state prison.

The Chicago Tribune reported that 34-year-old Myron Mason was sentenced Friday by a Cook County judge after pleading guilty to first-degree murder in the April 21, 2015, slaying of Mechelle Lewis.

Fleeing carjacking suspect jumps to death from overpass

HILLSIDE – A carjacking suspect fleeing police in suburban Chicago jumped from an expressway overpass and died.

An Urban Institute state-by-state survey shows Illinois, with 6.1 million income tax returns in 2013, ranked fifth in the total amount of charitable contributions at $7.8 billion. But the average tax deduction was $3,866, 12 percent below the national average and 33rd among the states.

Another question for the newly formed Illinois foundation is whether its state fairs have the same brand appeal as their neighbors’. With a large geographic area and a major metropolitan area, Illinois’ fairs have more competition in terms of large, outdoor events.

Northeastern Ill. U.: More freshmen, fewer total students

CHICAGO – Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago said its incoming freshman class is the largest in three years, but

the total number of students at the school dipped as the state’s ongoing budget impasse continued to affect colleges throughout the state.

In a news release, the school said the number of freshmen enrolled in the fall climbed by 801 students – a 7 percent increase over last year. It also said the number of African-American, graduate, international and transfer students increased.

The release said the overall enrollment dropped this year from last year. This fall, the school said, it has a total of 9,530 students enrolled. That is 3.6 percent fewer students than the 9,891 enrolled in 2015.

NEW YORK – The U.S. marked the 15th anniversary of 9/11 with the solemn roll call of the dead Sunday but couldn’t keep the presidential campaign from intruding on what is traditionally a politics-free moment of remembrance.

About 90 minutes into the ground zero ceremony, Hillary Clinton left after feeling “overheated,” her campaign said. A doctor for the 68-year-old Democrat said Sunday she had previously been diagnosed with pneumonia.

Hours after video surfaced of her stumbling into a van, Clinton said she was “feeling great,” but the doctor advised her to rest.

The episode cast a political shadow over an event that has tried to keep the focus on remembrance by inviting politicians but barring them from speaking. The two candidates had followed the custom of suspending all TV ads for the day.

The politics of the moment weren’t entirely absent from the ceremony, where some victims’ relatives pleaded for the nation to look past its differences, expressed hopes for peace or called on the next commander-in-chief to ensure the country’s safety.

Joseph Quinn, who lost his brother, Jimmy, appealed to Americans to regain the sense of unity that welled up after the terror attacks.

“I know, in our current political environment, it may feel we’re divided. Don’t believe it,” said Quinn, who added that he served in the military in Iraq after Sept. 11. “Engage with

your community. ... Be the connection we all desperately need.”

Nearly 3,000 people died when terrorists slammed hijacked planes into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, on Sept. 11, 2001.

Organizers estimated 8,000 people gathered Sunday at the lower Manhattan spot where the twin towers once stood. They listened to the nearly four-hour recitation of the names of those killed.

About 1,000 people gathered for a name-reading observance in Shanksville. At a Pentagon ceremony, President Barack Obama praised military members and others who have helped the U.S. fight terrorism, urged Americans not to let their enemies divide them and called the country’s diversity one of its greatest strengths.

“We stay true to the spirit of this day by defending not only our country, but also our ideals,” he told hundreds of service members, survivors and victims’ relatives.

In New York, some victims’ relatives said their loss had inspired them to help others.

Jerry D’Amadeo said he worked this summer with children at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, where 26 children and adults were massacred in 2012.

“Sometimes the bad things in our lives put us on a path to where we should be,” said D’Amadeo, who was 10 when he lost his father, Vincent.

Solving Chicago’s murder problem The deadliest month in two decades. More homicides this year than in New York and Los Angeles combined. Almost twice as many people killed as U.S. soldiers killed in Afghanistan since 2013.

With each new homicide in Chicago comes a new description that tries to capture the magnitude – and horror – of the violence that has plagued America’s third-largest city.

A wave of shootings – 65 people shot, 13 of them fatally – over the Labor Day weekend pushed the number of dead for 2016 past 500, putting Chicago on pace for more than 600 homicides for the year. Among those killed over the holiday weekend: a 44-year-old man killed as he and his wife drove to the grocery store, an 80-year-old pastor shot in the face outside the senior home where he lived, and a 17-year-old boy shot in the back. Others gunned down this year include a young woman caught in crossfire as she walked her baby in a stroller, and a newborn baby boy who died two days after an emergency delivery necessitated by his mother being shot in the chest.

The violence, reminiscent of the crack cocaine epidemic that drove murders in cities across the nation in the 1990s, seems to have left officials flummoxed. Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said Tuesday that his department is doing all it can to combat violence. “It’s not a police issue – it’s a society issue,” he said, pointing the finger instead at “impoverished neighborhoods” where “people without hope do these kinds of things.”

That sounded like an evasion. No doubt, the chief is right about the complexities that give root to crime and violence.

But it is clear – as evidenced by the success New York and other cities have had in curtailing homicides – that Chicago has a unique set of problems in which the police play their part. Foremost among them are the tumult and distrust that pervade police-community relations in the wake of the fatal shooting of black teen Laquan McDonald by an officer in October 2014 and the belated release of a troubling video a year later. That the police union urged its members to refuse voluntary overtime over the recent holiday weekend – when they were most needed – suggests there may be a morale problem, the “Ferguson effect” of police not doing all they can.

It also is important to address the flow of illegal guns that fuels the violence in gang-heavy neighborhoods. Despite restrictive gun laws, guns are easily available from nearby jurisdictions, such as Indiana. And despite its reputation for strict control, Chicago has relatively lenient gun penalties.

There is a one-year minimum for illegal possession, compared with New York’s 3½ years.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel has promised to deliver a major address in mid-September to deal with the violence. “It’s a complex set of problems that will be dealt with in a very comprehensive way,” he said. “Everything from the police, to children, to what we have to do for their safety, to guns, to making sure we’re providing hope where there is despair.”

That many of his constituents think it more likely that young people will become victims of crime than graduates from college shows the need for urgency in offering solutions.

Incompatible partners: Capitalism, education The news left tens of thousands of students stunned: Just as the fall semester was starting, ITT Technical Institute – one of the nation’s largest chains of for-profit colleges – shut down all its campuses, stranding some would-be graduates a few months shy of a diploma.

As wrenching as the closure is, however, it should have happened sooner. As did Corinthian Colleges, a for-profit chain that collapsed last year, ITT Tech was forced to the brink because the Obama administration has cracked down on an industry that thrived on shady practices.

Those colleges have made their money by recruiting desperate and vulnerable students of modest means and charging overly high tuition rates.

For-profit colleges deliver very little of what they promise. You’ve no doubt heard some of their ads pledging lucrative careers in a growing field of endeavor – health care or technology, perhaps. The truth is that workers who attend for-profit colleges often end up earning less than they did before they pursued a degree, according to a study by the National Bureau of Economic Research.

There is a lesson here beyond the fortunes of for-profit schools. For all the worship of capitalism in the American psyche, the simple truth is that the profit motive doesn’t work

VIEWS Cynthia Tucker everywhere. While the drive to make money can spark innovation, spur economic growth and fuel general prosperity, it also can corrupt entire enterprises. Not every sector of the economy ought to be privatized.

Higher education provides as good an example as any of the corrupting potential of capitalism. The United States already operates one of the best systems of higher education in the world; that’s why our colleges and universities attract so many foreign students. And for all the outrage – completely justified – over student debt, the nation also offers a system of affordable community colleges.

But back in the 1990s, liberals joined conservatives in their enthusiasm for privatization, which led to an explosion in the growth of for-profit schools. Investors camped out.

Private equity groups swooped in.

The industry had to deliver more and more profits.

But teaching – actually teaching students a skill, a craft, a vocation – is hard work that doesn’t promote easy profits since most students can’t afford to pay exorbitant rates for college. Indeed, most public colleges

don’t charge enough tuition to cover their costs. State legislatures need to make up the rest.

So how did the Corinthians and ITT Techs of the world deliver the profits they promised? A few years back, now-retired Sen. Tom Harkin, an Iowa Democrat, launched an investigation into the industry. He found that associate degree and certificate programs at for-profit colleges cost about four times as much as those at community colleges and public universities. He also found a system that was abusive and fraudulent.

For-profit schools send their recruiters into working-class neighborhoods, where they home in on desperate adults yearning for stable jobs with better wages. They inflate their job placement numbers, promising that a degree will pave the road to prosperity. The recruiters use hardsell techniques that maximize federal grants and loans – that’s where most of their profits come from – and then encourage prospective students to take out more loans if federal aid doesn’t cover their costs. As a result, many of those students end up without degrees but head-over-heels in debt.

The strategies used by for-profit colleges may represent the profit motive run amok, but the demise of ITT Tech still serves as a reminder that capitalism is no cure-all. Some

But it doesn’t deserve to be worshipped as a god doling out good things to all. enterprises should be run as a business – appliance stores, technology companies, aircraft manufacturers – with all the risks and rewards that generally apply. But there are other undertakings that merely serve a public good. Trying to wrest a profit from those will result only in exploitation.

(The same applies, by the way, to for-profit operators of charter schools serving grades K-12. While the vast majority of charter schools are run by nonprofit organizations, a few states have encouraged for-profit companies to take over schools. The result has been shabbily run classrooms that drain taxpayer dollars.)

Capitalism certainly has its place. But it doesn’t deserve to be worshipped as a god doling out good things to all. The profit motive doesn’t improve every endeavor. Instead, it simply pollutes some enterprises that it should not touch.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Voices of 570,000 voters matter advancing a party’s initiative, but the To the Editor: Aug. 25 will be remembered as the day when 570,000 Illinois registered voters’ voices were suppressed by a court system’s partisan 4-3 vote.

Justice Robert Thomas wrote in his dissenting opinion, “The Illinois Constitution is meant to prevent tyranny, not to enshrine it.”

In Illinois, tyranny has been extended as House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President Cullerton continue their collective 82 years in political office.

The mapmaking process is rigged.

The political games are so entrenched in Illinois’ history that it is difficult to pinpoint exactly when it became about

Madigan has fought with such resolve against the passage of redistricting reform because he knows how much is at stake for his party. He was the one who spearheaded the rise of the “Democratic machine” we have today.

In a calculated effort to ensure more Democratic seats for Chicago, Madigan used his first remapping experience to secure six additional House seats and three additional Senate seats for Democrats.

Some voters may remember the notorious Cutback Amendment (1980), which ended a process of cumula-

tive voting and multimember House districts in Illinois. The amendment was professed as good policy to decrease salary and benefit costs by reducing the number of representatives from 177 to 118. But the amendment also reduced party representation. Madigan used his gerrymandering skills to guarantee that 43 of the 59 abolished seats belonged to Republicans.

Illinois’ entrenched political regime must give way to the will of the people.

Currently, 67 percent of Illinois state senators are Democrats, but the state overall is more balanced. This shows how the political mapping process can be hijacked by a single party. The only way for Illinois voters to regain their voice is to hold their elected officials

accountable.

To free our mapping process from the tyranny of a repressive system, I encourage voters across Illinois to demand that their legislators support redistricting reform as a primary policy initiative to restore good governance.

We need this reform in all states, but Illinois especially highlights why the system is broken. Residents want balance, compromise and good government. The counterweight, who fear political retribution from the Chicago machine, blindly ignored the will of the people and the common sense of the Illinois Constitution.

DAILY CHRONICLE On Saturday, Sept. 17, two independent, privately owned physical therapy clinics will host the third annual Walk & Roll for Mobility, a walk from Creative Therapeutics on Hillcrest Drive to Northern Rehab’s office on Lincoln Highway in DeKalb.

Donations from the walk will go to the Voluntary Action Center.

“We wanted to have an event the whole family can be part of, something all ages can enjoy. This September event is a perfect kickoff to Physical Therapy Month,” Mark Mattson, owner of Creative Therapeutics, said in a news release.

The geography of DeKalb, itself, contributed to the plan: the two clinics are joined by a bike path along the river, and it is a pleasant 1.5-mile walk from one clinic to the other. Bike again this year, as well; this adds a fun twist to the event as six people can ride the circular bike at once along the path.

Museum sets time for tea DAILY CHRONICLE

The Sycamore History Museum is serving up tea on Sunday. This historical tea party will be an enjoyable event for young ladies, mothers, grandmothers and friends.

While enjoying a sip of tea (lemonade also will be available) and sampling sandwiches, scones and desserts, visitors will listen to Patricia O’Brien talk about “Friendship and Tea.” The afternoon will include a best hat competition, tea bingo and children’s activities. There also will be silent auction items.

“Last year was the first year we hosted this event. Everyone had a great time, and commented about how they were hoping we would do it again,” Michelle Donahoe, museum executive director, said in a news release.

O’Brien has been trained and certified by the Protocol School of Washington as a tea and etiquette consultant. Tea is her passion, which makes her search for places to go with friends to have a cup, whether it be at a tearoom, hotel, or B&B. During the program, guests will hear the legend of the discovery of tea and how it has evolved into the most popular beverage worldwide, second only to water. O’Brien will discuss how different processes make tea leaves turn to black, brown, green and white. She also will share information on who invented the tea bag and the difference between afternoon and high tea as well as who started the craze.

St. Mary School in DeKalb will host its third annual Lancer Dash on Sept.

17. Runners, walkers and strollers are welcome at this event that benefits the school.

The day will kick off at 10:30 a.m. with a 5K road race, followed by a 2K walk/ run at about 11:30 a.m. A Kids Fun Run for ages 7 and younger will begin after the 2K at around 11:50 a.m.

Historical society to discuss Sandwich Fair Museum DAILY CHRONICLE The Sandwich Fair Museum will be the program topic of the DeKalb County Historical-Genealogical Society at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

This program will take place at the Sandwich Fair Association office at 1401 Suydam Road, Sandwich. A tour of the Fair Museum will follow after a short business meeting and a presentation by fair historian Joan

Hardekopf.

Hardekopf, of Sheridan, has been involved with the Sandwich Fair for many years, first as an exhibitor and then as a member of the Gazebo Souvenir and Information booth.

After helping research and write the history “The Sandwich Fair, Since 1888 in 2001,” she was asked to be the fair historian. That led to organizing the materials in the fair archives, and in 2011 the Fair Museum opened in the

little building that was formerly the secretary’s office during the fair.

Displays in the museum include a timeline of the fair from the beginning to 2000 and collectibles given away or sold at the fair in past years. Also, each year items from a different area collector are borrowed for display.

The museum is a stamping station for the annual activity book, which brings in many school-age children and adults. Volunteers staff the air-condi-

tioned museum, which is only open during the fair, or for special tours by appointment.

Those who would like to carpool to Sandwich, either by offering a ride or requesting a ride, should meet at 6 p.m. at Oak Crest Retirement Center, DeKalb, door 4, the back door nearest the Little Theater.

Director shares plans for Ellwood-Nehring House DAILY CHRONICLE The Ellwood House Museum will offer a program on the latest restoration efforts for the Ellwood-Nehring House at 6 p.m. Sept. 17.

The Ellwood-Nehring House, an 1899 Tudor-style structure on the corner of North First Street and Augusta Avenue, was donated to the Ellwood House Association by Shirley Nehring in 2011.

Since its incorporation into the Ellwood House Association, the Ellwood-Nehring House has undergone several changes. Executive Director Brian Reis will update the community on what work has already been done on the home and what is yet to come.

Community members interested in historic preservation, local history, and behind-the-scenes museum information will find this lecture to be a rare treat. The Ellwood-Nehring

House also will be open for viewing.

“Ellwood-Nehring House Restoration: 2016 Update” is part of Local Lore, the museum’s adult lecture series. Once a month, Local Lore shares stories relating to DeKalb’s history.

Each lecture features a different guest speaker.

Graham ready for encore performance at quarterback for Huskies

jseverson@shawmedia.com TAMPA, Fla. – It is disheartening déjà vu for Ryan Graham.

For the second consecutive season, Graham likely will take over for Drew Hare as the starting quarterback for Northern Illinois after Hare suffered another ankle injury during the Huskies’ lopsided 48-17 loss Saturday night at South Florida.

As a redshirt freshman last season, Graham was thrust into the spotlight after Hare suffered a season-ending Achilles injury Nov. 3.

Now the 6-foot-1, 210-pound quarterback from Wheaton likely takes over as the indefinite starter after Hare suffered what appeared to be a gruesome left ankle injury in the third quarter of the loss. While NIU coach Rod Carey said after the game that he hadn’t received an official diagnosis of the injury, Hare was carted off the field after being hurt and left the locker room in a wheelchair with a medical boot on his left foot, and a solemn expression on his face.

“It’s not anything new,” Graham said after the game about taking over for Hare. “I have a lot more confidence

in myself [compared with last year].

I know that I have the ability, so it’s just go out there and do it. There’s no questioning being the first time, so as a backup you always have to be ready.

It sucks to watch him go down, but I was ready.”

While the injury was difficult to watch, Graham was competent after Hare was injured last season.

He helped rally the Huskies for a 3227 win in the Toledo game, in which Hare was injured, going 9 for 12 with 132 yards and a touchdown. He then led the Huskies to wins at Buffalo (15 for 24, 190 yards, two touchdowns, one

interception) and against Western Michigan (11 for 23 for 158 yards, two touchdowns and one interception).

He was 11 for 17 for 142 yards and a touchdown before getting injured in the loss to Ohio. Graham, who injured his knee, came back for the Poinsettia Bowl loss to Boise State and struggled, going 7 for 21 with 38 yards.

Only surprise was Bears’ halftime lead There has been little buzz around the 2016 Bears in their second season under the guidance of general manager Ryan Pace and head coach John Fox, and their Week 1, 23-14 loss to the Houston Texans showed why.

The team Pace and Fox inherited needed to be completely rebuilt, we are now in only the second year of what was clearly going to be a three-year job, and when they get in against teams that are more talented than them – which the Texans are – they will have days such as they did Sunday in Houston.

The biggest surprise for me was that the Bears actually won the first half.

The rub, of course, is that’s what created elevated expectations and left many fans disappointed when the second half went as we should have expected.

So, although the Bears are 0-1, is the glass half empty or half full?

Although Jay Cutler couldn’t lead the Bears to the upset, he made a couple of plays few other QBs in the league can make, leaving us all begging for more.

There isn’t a quarterback/receiver duo in the NFL that makes the deep

disappointment was the game management of Fox and company that was clearly subpar.

An early choice to go on fourth-and-1 with a seven-point lead and leave a 46yard field goal untried was puzzling, the challenge of a Will Fuller catch later on the sidelines on which there was clearly nothing to challenge was strange, and a failure to challenge a Texans first down on a successful fourth-and-1 QB sneak that looked to be short hurt, too.

Poor game management has haunted Fox in the past.

The Bears just came up short against a better team – a reigning division champ with a top-five defense – and what will really matter is whether next week we can see evidence of what they learn from their mistakes and whether any of it is applied to make them a better team.

For the most part, that is what this season will be all about.

3 things that worked Starting fast: Porter’s impressive interception led to an eight-play, 75-yard touchdown drive in which Jay Cutler was efficient moving the ball down the field to give the Bears the early 7-0 lead.

Red-zone defense: On two of three opportunities, the Bears held the Texans to a field goal in the red zone, including the possession after Cutler’s interception. Houston didn’t help itself with penalties on each drive, but the Bears did their job, keeping the Texans out of the end zone.

Cutler to Jeffery: That connection was unstoppable in the first half, with Alshon Jeffery catching all four balls thrown his way for 105 yards, and he drew a pass interference penalty that led to Jeremy Langford’s touchdown. Unfortunately for the Bears, Jeffery didn’t catch a pass after halftime.

Second-half offense: Jay Cutler was 6 of 16 passing for 60 yards with an interception in the second half on a miscommunication with Kevin White, and he was sacked five times. The Bears managed only four first downs in the second half and zero points.

First-half run defense: The Texans won the battle in the trenches in the first half, pushing the Bears off the line and paving the way for Lamar Miller to run for 83 yards on 15 carries.

Kickoff returns: On five kickoff returns, Deonte Thompson only got it past the 25-yard line – the new touchback line – one time, when he returned a fourth-quarter kickoff to the Bears’ 26. Rookie DeAndre Houston-Carson had an illegal block penalty on a kickoff, too.

Cutler goes deep: A questionable pass interference penalty on Zach Miller seemed to send the Bears to halftime trailing, 10-7, but Dowell Loggains dialed up one shot – why not? – and it worked. Cutler launched it down the right sideline to Jeffery, who easily won a jump ball over Andre Hall. Royal’s touchdown on the next play gave the Bears the halftime lead.

Jeffery’s drop: As automatic as Jeffery was in the first half, he couldn’t hang on to a bullet from Cutler on third-and-6 late in the third quarter that would have been a first down. The Texans took the lead for good on Will Fuller’s touchdown on the next possession.

Mercilus’ sack: Royal’s 19-yard catch put the Bears in decent field position trailing by six, and they eventually faced a third-and-6 from their 45-yard line. That’s when Whitney Mercilus got a lane to Cutler from the blind side for a strip sack, leading to a punt. The Texans went up nine on the ensuing drive.

What now?

Record: 0-1 What it means: The Bears begin the season looking up at their NFC North rivals, falling in the season opener for the third consecutive season.

What’s next: An extra day of rest before the home opener Monday night against Carson Wentz and the Eagles.

Spartans’ backups get playing time

sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – Sycamore quarterbacks threw six passes Saturday against Roosevelt (Gary, Indiana) at Engh Field. They scored six touchdowns.

It was one of those days for the Spartans in a 63-6 win over the Panthers.

The Spartans (1-2) lost their first two games of the year, and coach Joe Ryan said he team needed a win heading into a rivalry game Friday against DeKalb at Huskie Stadium.

“When you’re 0-2, you have to find a win somewhere,” Ryan said. “This is not a normal team we play. We know that, and the kids know that. But I still thought we did the things we had to do beat a team that wasn’t as good as we are. We know that’s going to change next Friday.”

The Spartans moved the ball at will with their starters, amassing a 35-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Chris Pawola ran seven times for 85 yards and two touchdowns, plus had a 31-yard reception for a score. Ty Sulaver complete all three of his passes for 74 yards and three scores, two to Jordan Tolzin.

The defense also held the Panthers (0-3) to 54 yards in the first half.

“I told them never apologize for winning,” Ryan said. “It should be fun. You only get nine opportunities, you need to enjoy every one, so I said, ‘Let’s enjoy it.’ ... Kids need to enjoy victories, never apologize for winning.”

That let the backups get a chance to play, and do well. All three of Justin Pottorff’s attempts found Austin Schroeder for touchdowns.

Sam Hancock was one of the first backups in, relieving Pawola in the first quarter. He ran 13 times for 68 yards and a touchdown.

“It’s really good experience against the upper-level playing guys,” Hancock said. “It’s not as significant when you have over 60 points up on the board, but it’s still a lot of fun to play

football, and when all that practice pays off.”

One of Roosevelt’s biggest plays of the game came on a blocked punt in the third. The Panthers had been averaging only 15.3 yardsa punt, and Sycamore finally got through and stuffed the kick. But lineman Damoni Wicks picked it up behind the line of scrimmage and ran 27 yards, almost getting a first down – it was on a fourth and 30.

“A win like this is really good to give us confidence going into next week,” Hancock said. “Being 0-2, then scoring 63 points in the game. I think that’s good for the team.”

34-7 advantage. On the next kickoff, Turner dropped it with the ball going out of bounds on the NIU 3-yard line.

Hare was injured on the first play of the drive, keeping the ball on a run before being swallowed up by the South Florida defense – his left ankle bending violently as he went down and he instantly reached down to grab it.

“That was very tough to see,” said Huskies linebacker Bobby Jones, who had a team-high eight tackles. “I feel so bad for him, honestly. Just have to continue to pray for him and hope he bounces back.”

their hands full when they host defending Mountain West Conference champions San Diego State in Saturday’s home opener. After allowing an average of 27.6 points per game in 2015, NIU has allowed 88 in its first two games of the year, and the Aztecs (2-0) are coming off a 45-40 win over Cal. “Obviously, we’re not used to losing, so coming off an 0-2 start is definitely something different,” NIU linebacker Renard Cheren said. “I think we just need to come together and work on our flaws and what we’re doing wrong and just fix it. Period, because we don’t have any excuse after this.”

Cubs 9, Astros 5: At Houston, Jorge Soler and Addison Russell homered to lead the Cubs to a 9-5 win over the Houston Astros on Sunday night, moving the Cubs closer to clinching the NL Central.

Soler hit a solo home run as part of the Cubs four-run third, and Russell hit a two-run shot – his 20th of the season – in the fourth as the Cubs built a 9-0 lead.

The Cubs extended their lead in the NL Central to 16 games over St. Louis. Jake Arrieta (17-6) allowed three runs on four hits with three strikeouts in 51/3 innings.

Kansas City 2, White Sox 0: At Chicago, Chris Sale’s masterful performance

was paired with a loss, again, a recurring conundrum that could prompt the struggling Sox to trade the ace left-hander.

Sale struck out 12 over eight innings, but it wasn’t enough for the Sox’s anemic offense in a loss to the Kansas City Royals on Sunday that inched the Sox closer to their fourth straight losing season.

General manager Rick Hahn has said the club is “mired in mediocrity” and considering wholesale changes. Sale made two mistakes. Kendrys Morales homered on Sale’s first pitch of the second, and Eric Hosmer did the same in the fourth.

Sale (15-8) allowed eight hits while becoming the first Sox pitcher with four consecutive 200-strikeout seasons.

It was his third game of 10 or more strikeouts this season and No. 34 for his career.

Playing shorthanded, DeKalb falls to Geneva

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Playing a man down for most of Saturday’s game, the DeKalb boys soccer team fell, 3-0, to the Geneva Vikings.

The Barbs had to play the majority of the game a man down after senior forward Alonzo Jones took a red card for a handball that broke up a goal scoring opportunity about the 20-minute mark of the first half. Jones will have to sit out the next game.

“I was the last defender on the play,” Jones said. “I read the play and got back to the goal line, near post. He shot it and I changed directions quickly. I thought I got it in the

chest-ish area, but apparently, I got it with my shoulder. Honestly, I’d do the same thing again. It stopped a goal and we got a [penalty kick] out of it. My goalie [Genaro Rodriguez] stopped the PK and it saved a goal.”

The Barbs (3-3-1) gave up three goals in the first half, two after Jones’ red card.

“Going into this match from a coaching standpoint, we knew that this was going to be a performance-based assessment, rather than a scoreboard-based assessment,” Barbs coach Brent McIntosh said.

“For stretches of the first half, we struggled a bit. In the second half, we did a much better job of defending and staying organized. That is a cred-

it to our character. Losing [Jones] is tough for us. He is small in stature, but he is our big dog. He would run through a brick wall for his teammates. His energy and his leadership will be missed; this is an opportunity for other guys to step up for us.”

Geneva (3-5-1) was able to get out to a comfortable lead early after goals by Jack Cottrell (26:30), Eric Anderson (19:45) and Ryan Albrecht (8:46) made it a 3-0 game late in the first half. They were able to roll their substitutions and play with peace of mind.

Although Vikings coach Ryan Estabrook was definitely happy with the shutout, he wishes that his team could have scored in the second half.

“It is disappointing to not exploit our man advantage more in the second half,” Estabrook said. “I think that is a testament to how hard DeKalb played. I am happy that we played hard and physically the whole game. We were able to control the ball in the middle of the field and that made sure that they couldn’t bring their forwards into that part of the field as much. We talk about two words that really guide us to have success. One of them is focus and the other is grit. That means being physical and working hard around and off of the ball.”

The Barbs will travel to renew their rivalry with Sycamore at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Paul Casey did just about everything he could, including two early birdies for twoshot swings that erased a four-shot deficit

in two holes. Johnson answered with a pair of birdies and he was on his way. Casey made a 25-foot eagle putt on the 15th hole to get within one shot, but that lasted only as long as it took Johnson to make an 18foot eagle putt on top of him to keep the margin at three shots.

Casey was runner-up in his second

straight FedEx Cup playoff event, losing to Rory McIlroy a week ago. His consolation, along with $1,836,000 in those weeks, was the No. 5 seed at the Tour Championship in two weeks. That means he only has to win at East Lake to capture the $10 million bonus.

26 Language exercises help stroke patients Dear Dr. K: My mother recently had a stroke, and it’s severely impacted her ability to speak. What can be done to help her regain her speech?

Dear Reader: Losing the ability to speak, or to understand speech, takes away an important part of ourselves – the ability to communicate easily with others. But there is hope your mother can improve.

A stroke occurs when a blood vessel supplying the brain bursts or becomes blocked. In both cases, the injury deprives the brain of a constant supply of oxygenand nutrient-rich blood. Brain cells can die, possibly affecting a person’s ability to move, feel, think or even recognize people.

In your mother’s case, it has taken her ability to speak.

Your mother should begin a rehabilitation program with a speech-language pathologist as soon as she is able. This therapist will help your mother improve her capacity to speak and understand speech.

The two most common stroke-related speech impairments are aphasia and dysarthria.

Aphasia is the loss of the power to use or understand words. In most people, it occurs when a stroke damages the left side of the brain, which is where language is processed. Some people with aphasia have trouble talking but can easily understand speech. Others talk easily but can’t understand what people are saying.

Rehab for someone with aphasia involves speech and language exercises that help the patient regain the ability to understand, speak, read and write. Exercises include repeating words a therapist says, practicing following directions and practicing reading and writing. Group therapy sessions provide opportunities to practice talking with others who are recovering

Dysarthria is the inability to speak because the stroke has weakened the muscles of the tongue, palate and lips – the parts of the mouth that utter words. With dysarthria, a person can understand speech and form proper words in her mind, but just cannot get the words out of her mouth. Persons with dysarthria often can write their thoughts down perfectly well even though they cannot speak them out loud.

A person with dysarthria can do exercises to help increase strength and endurance in the muscles used for speech. The therapist also helps to improve enunciation. He or she might recommend speaking more slowly or taking deeper breaths before speaking.

A patient of mine in his early 70s ran a small Italian restaurant. During the holidays, 40 to 50 of his closest family members would congregate at his house. He and his wife cooked. He loved these family reunions even though they required lots of work. “That’s what makes our family so close: food and conversation.” He suffered a stroke that caused dysarthria. At the family gatherings, he installed a blackboard on an easel and “spoke” by writing comments on the blackboard. Despite his stroke, he kept the conversation going.

DEAR ABBY wife of 15 years is a beautiful Jeanne lady I find more Phillips attractive every day. I compliment her often, but her self-image isn’t particularly good. She’s a top-level executive – not your typical “girly-girl.”

She has never been the sexy-dress type, in the bedroom or out in public. She doesn’t have to dress up for work on a daily basis and prefers wearing sweats at home, which is fine 99 percent of the time.

I have asked her for a special night out in which she would dress up for me, just a bit on the sexy side, followed by some late-night fun at home. When I do, she laughs off the idea and says I’m silly.

I’m certainly not the only one who finds her attractive. She gets compliments from others often. How do I find another approach to this?

Or am I being selfish? – Hoping In Minnesota Dear Hoping: I don’t think a husband telling his wife what he would like is selfish. The key to a satisfying marriage is communication. I do think it’s wrong of her to belittle you by telling you your fantasy is silly. It’s not. Many couples enjoy occasionally dressing up and role-playing. Take her shopping so you can pick out something together that’s dressier than sweats or what she would wear to work, and perhaps you can arrive at a compromise.

Dear Abby: My mom gives my older brother an allowance because he’s a fugitive from the law (outstanding warrants) and lives in another country. I have told her repeatedly she’s enabling him, and he will expect it for the rest of his life, but she insists “one day” he’ll survive on his own, even though he always has squandered money.

She expects me to continue supporting him after she dies since I am the only legal child left. She says if she doesn’t pay him, he’ll be homeless, and I will be responsible for him since I will inherit her estate.

I have helped my brother a lot in the past, but inevitably he gets upset with the helper (including Mom) because he feels entitled. I don’t want my brother to be homeless, but he already has received his share of her estate because she has been paying for him for years and I haven’t received any aid. What seems fair? – The Other Sibling Dear Other Sibling: What’s fair is that you realize your mother’s money is hers to do with as she wishes. Perhaps it’s time you and your mother discuss setting up a trust for your brother. An attorney who specializes in wills and trusts can help her do this and determine what is fair.

If you do, it may accomplish two goals: First, it will put your mother’s mind at ease, and second, it will remove any responsibility for your brother from your shoulders, which should save you a world of aggravation. Please consider it.
