Has it really been 15 years?

At the time, it almost seemed impossible that we could get to the place where we are now, where life seems “normal” and a sense of security, while not absolute, has largely returned.

Maybe it’s because the memories remain so vivid that the passage of time seems so remarkable. As do so many others, I remember where I was when I heard about the Sept.

11 attacks, the disbelief I felt as the enormity of the events became clear on a bright, sunny Tuesday morning.

I was fortunate in many ways on that day.

My loved ones and I were all a safe distance away. I was a newspaper reporter, and unlike all those who were evacuated from their jobs in Chicago’s Loop or just sent home for the day, I had work I could throw myself into, carried away on the tide of the awful news that swallowed up the whole world.

When you’re busy, there’s not time to despair.

At the Northwest Herald in Crystal Lake, we put out an extra edition, then kept working. The tragedy was a story, the biggest of our lives, a monster with so many angles.

I was exactly a year into my career at the paper, and had the luxury of following orders from editors.

So many things came after that day, however. Nightmares. A procession of obituaries of the dead, innocents who had been going about their business, who left behind hus-

EDITOR’S NOTE Eric Olson bands and wives and children and unfinished work. War. That war continues today, and I worry whether it will end in my lifetime. I fear we as Americans have grown complacent about it, too.

But then, complacency is another sign that things have, by and large, returned to “normal.”

It’s a different normal, however. America was changed by the events of Sept. 11, 2001, and although it was a horror, the tragedy did for a time bring us together.

The anniversary still does. It’s a day where all of us can take a moment to remember, not just where we were and what we did that day, but also all the people who lost loved ones, who suffered post-traumatic stress for months and years afterward, who signed up to serve in the armed forces.

Fifteen years, and I remember it like it was yesterday.

Area police officers lauded for work in Chicago murder case

gillespie@shawmedia.com KIRKLAND – Four Kirkland police officers have been praised by the Chicago Police Department for their work in helping to capture suspects in the shooting death of an NBA star’s cousin.

Part-time officers Robert Haynes, 41, and Jonathan Hedges, 31, along with auxiliary officers Nicholas Buroff, 26, and Thomas Konieczny, 26, all moonlight with Lemont-based Protech Security Group Inc. and work security at the Parkway Gardens housing community on the South Side of Chicago.

On Aug. 26, the four officers were working at the housing complex, known for its rampant crime and high poverty, when 32-year-old Nykea Aldridge was fatally struck in the head and arm by bullets while she was pushing her 4-weekold daughter in a stroller. She was walking through the half-mile-long complex and had just come from a nearby public school where she registered her other three children for school. She had moved there less than a year before.

Aldridge was not the intended target, police have said.

“These officers were instrumental in the apprehension of one of the offenders. Their quick action and attention to details was vital in identifying and apprehending the first offender,” Chicago police Sgt. Michael Kelly wrote in an email to Kirkland Police Chief Paul Lindstrom.

Kelly, who works in Chicago police’s Area 1 detective division, supervised the case, according to the email.

News spread quickly that Aldridge was Chicago Bulls guard Dwyane Wade’s cousin.

The Kirkland police officers and another security guard on duty with them saw a man on Parkway Gardens surveillance cameras who was thought to be involved in the shooting.

“We identified him from the security footage,” Haynes said. “He was basically hanging out in the courtyard like nothing ever happened. We went and apprehended him.”

The other security guard, Cortez Fort, who is not a police officer, had detained the man who is believed to be the gunmen’s intended target.

Hedges said Fort’s work was as crucial to the case as what he and his police colleagues did.

The four officers collectively agreed that they didn’t treat the shooting incident any differently than they would any other. In fact, they said, they weren’t aware of who the victim was or who she was related to until after the suspect had been arrested.

“Just because it’s such a high-profile case doesn’t make it any more important that any other murder,” Hedges said.

Still, within three hours of the shooting, Darwin Sorrells was arrested on the Parkway Gardens premises. He implicated his brother, Darren, who was arrested the next morning, and Chicago police on Aug. 28 announced first-degree murder and attempted first-degree

charges against the pair.

The suspects did not live in the housing complex, according to police.

“If it were not for their [the Kirkland police officers] actions, this case might not have come to successful resolution as fast as it did,” Kelly said in the email to Lindstrom.

The Kirkland Police Department won’t be formally commending the four officers because the incident didn’t happen in town, Kirkland Mayor Les Bellah said.

But the mayor said he is proud, nonetheless, of the policemen’s work – even if it was performed in another jurisdiction. Bellah said in the current climate where police officers are often vilified by the public, and so-called bad cops’ actions are quick to make headlines, its sobering to have good cops’ actions – and Kirkland ones, to boot – be recognized.

“They’re happy that the Chicago Police Department recognized them.

I’m happy that they recognized them

as well. … They are representatives of not only the village of Kirkland, but of Small Town, USA, in getting something done and not being afraid to do their jobs,” Bellah said. “Just so they know, they’re respected by my office and this police department for what they did.”

“Good cops rarely get recognition for what they do. … People recognize the bad stuff because this world is stuck on what happened today that was bad,” Bellah said.

Chicago Police Department officials said the officers will be recognized there, but no date or further details have been disclosed.

The Kirkland Police Department includes three full-time police officers, 13 who work part time and nine nonsworn auxiliary officers.

The officers don’t usually live in town and a number of them have other jobs.

Hedges not only works for Kirkland’s force and Protech, he also is a Rockford police officer. He’s been an officer for nine years but just started working for Kirkland police in April. He and Haynes, who’ve worked together as security officers in Rockford housing communities, carpool with each other to travel the more than 70 miles to work in Chicago.

Being auxiliary personnel, Buroff and Konieczny are volunteers and help the department with special events and other activities, the mayor said.

Buroff has worked for Protech for five years, he said, and has been assigned to Parkway Gardens for two years.

Bellah said he has heard complaints about Kirkland’s police officers having other jobs. But, he said, he has no qualms about it.

DeKalb police officers were on the scene of an armed robbery Friday of the DeKalb County Credit Union. Police said a man, who is thought to have acted alone, held credit union workers at gunpoint and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A masked man armed with a gun robbed a credit union Friday in DeKalb about an hour before it was to close for the day.

Police responded to DeKalb County Credit Union, 305 E. Locust St., about 4:15 p.m. Friday. No one was hurt in the incident, police said.

Police Cmdr. Bob Redel said that the man, who is thought to have acted alone, fled the scene after getting an undisclosed amount of money.

“We had officers that were on the scene instantly [after the call came in], and he was gone,” Redel said about the suspect, who is thought to be a darkskinned male, about 6 feet tall, wearing a hat, tan shirt and a gray hoodie that covered his face.

Police think he fled eastbound on foot, Redel said.

As of 6:30 p.m. Friday, the suspect remained at large, police confirmed.

The credit union is located near downtown DeKalb, one block north of Lincoln Highway, which is a main thoroughfare.

DeKalb police officers put up crime tape Friday near the DeKalb County Credit Union after an armed robbery.

It’s also about a half-block away from PNC Bank, which is on Third Street. A worker there said the bank remained opened for its normal hours Friday, even after word spread of the robbery.

As of afternoon Friday, police remained at the credit union and workers remained inside the building. Redel said

they were being interviewed about the robbery and officers were pulling surveillance video inside the credit union.

“Obviously the employees, they’re traumatized,” Redel said.

He didn’t provide any other details related to the robbery, including information about the mask the thief is believed

to have worn, saying it was early in the investigation.

The robbery took place just as businesses in downtown DeKalb were preparing to remain open a little later Friday for a Fall Open House event hosted by the Shops of Downtown DeKalb.

Restaurants, shops and other establishments were scheduled to take part in an open house, geared to familiarize visitors and residents with their businesses.

The bank robbery Friday was the third in the area this summer.

On July 22, a man wearing a wolf mask held up Fifth Third Bank at 2707 Sycamore Road in DeKalb. Police said he hopped over a counter in the bank and took an undisclosed amount of money.

He fled on foot that day and, so far, has not been captured.

On Aug. 26, police arrested a Sycamore woman in connection with a robbery at Old Second Bank in Sycamore.

Redel said Friday that such crimes were happening too frequently.

“This is unusual,”he said.

Man gets lighter sentence for 2001 kidnapping, rape

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A former Sycamore man convicted in 2002 of kidnapping and raping a Northern Illinois University student at gunpoint is seeking an even lighter sentence after a recent appeal and resentencing.

Todd S. Allgood, 48, formerly of 2574 Lilac Lane in the Edgebrook trailer park in Sycamore, is asking a judge to reconsider a recent decision sentencing him to 31 years in prison.

In 2002, Allgood was sentenced to 55 years in prison after a jury trial.

After several appeals over the years, the Illinois Second District Appellate Court ruled in May 2015 that a 15-year enhancement that was part of Allgood’s initial sentence violated state law. The higher court ordered Allgood to be resentenced under the guidelines that the maximum penalty for the aggravated criminal sexual assault was 30 years. The higher court upheld Allgood’s 10-year sentence for aggravated kidnapping.

Earlier this month, Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert sentenced Allgood to a total of 31 years in prison. A 21-

Man was resentenced after an appeal year sentence was imposed for the aggravated criminal sexual assault; that would be served consecutively to the 10-year sentence for aggravated kidnapping, bringing the total sentence to 31 years. Allgood will get credit for the 5,558 days he has already served, according to court records.

Assistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Klein said she had asked the Todd S. judge to sentence All- Allgood good to 30 years, the maximum, for the aggravated criminal sexual assault. Allgood’s attorney, Assistant DeKalb County Public Defender Charles Criswell Jr., said he asked for a sentence of eight to 12 years for the aggravated criminal sexual assault.

Criswell filed a motion this week asking the judge to reconsider that sentence. Criswell argues that the sentence is excessive in light of Allgood’s “military service, his lack of

criminal history and the likelihood of his successful rehabilitation.” He also cited Allgood’s more than 15 years as a “model inmate.” The motion is a required procedural step for an appeal. Criswell said Allgood could decide to appeal the sentence.

Allgood and his lawyers have contested his criminal history since 2001 and throughout the appeal process.

After Allgood was arrested in April 2001, police linked him to two previously unsolved rapes in 1989 and 1990 in the Mundelein area. Based on DNA testing, the Illinois State Crime Lab concluded Allgood was the rapist in both cases, according to a state’s attorney’s statement included in recent court records. Because of the statute of limitations, Allgood was never charged with either of the Mundelein rapes. Evidence linking him to those assaults was presented at his sentencing.

Allgood’s next court date is Sept.

26 for the motion to reconsider.

Klein, the prosecutor, said she will

oppose the motion.

On April 25, 2001, Allgood, abducted a then 21-year-old NIU student at gunpoint as she got into her vehicle in a gravel parking lot near the university in the 1100 block of West Lincoln Highway between 1:15 and 1:30 p.m, according to court records and Daily Chronicle reports. He forced her to drive to his trailer, where he raped her. Afterward, he ordered her to take a shower. Allgood then forced the woman to get back in the car and drive in a different direction.

However, the victim was able to convince Allgood that she wouldn’t go to police, and he allowed her to return to the parking lot where she was abducted. He told her that, if she said anything, he would claim that the encounter was consensual and would come back and kill her, according to court records.

Allgood was 33 years old and a married father of two at the time of the 2001 attack. He was attending NIU at the time.

As of Friday afternoon, the Illinois Department of Corrections hadn’t established a revised projected parole date for Allgood.

At 107, DeKalb woman hopes to see Cubs win pennant

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – At 107, Mavis Bell could be the oldest, active Chicago Cubs fan in the country.

She never misses watching a game, although her eyesight is failing and she has to turn the volume up a bit on the TV in her apartment at Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center, where she has lived the past 22 years.

She said she has been a Cubs fan as long as she can remember. She was born in April 1909, one year after the Cubs won their last World Series by beating the Detroit Tigers. She is getting more excited this year, keeping track of their winning ways, and doesn’t want to wait another season at her age to see them win the Series. “All my life I’ve been waiting for them to win, again,” she added. So that should give the team an added incentive to go the distance.

Asked about games she has attended in person, she said there were only two: One was when her husband drove her to St. Louis to see the Cubs play the Cardinals, but they lost that time.

Then she got to go to Wrigley Field to see them win at home once, but doesn’t remember what year.

Recalling her childhood days, she said she first played ball in grade school down in Independence, Kansas, about 100 years ago. “They called it ‘long base’ back then, when you hit the ball as hard as you could, then ran to a designated spot out in the field and tried to get back home before getting tagged. There was only one base out there, not three like today,” she said.

“One time, I hit the ball so far it went into the front door of a store across there street,” she said with a smile.

But in high school, girls didn’t play ball, so she cheered for the boys team.

She got married in 1926 to her high school sweetheart, Leroy Gliddon, and, after he finished college, moved up

to Kirkland, Illinois, where he was a pharmacist and owned Gliddon’s Drug Store. They had two children, Lavoy and Beverly. Mavis worked with her husband in the business for 38 years.

But when she was home ironing she turned on the radio, always to hear the Cubs play. After Leroy died, she married Clyde Bell in 1968. He is the one who took her to Wrigley Field, but it wasn’t on their honeymoon.

What else does she enjoy? She used to garden each summer, raising flowers and vegetables while living in Kirkland, plus doing cross stitch. In her late 80s, after moving to Oak Crest, she took up painting and has a half-dozen framed on her wall. For a long time, she has knitted and although she can’t see well, still works those needles by feel and has three baby afghans stacked on her footstool, with a fourth half done.

But when the Cubs are playing she concentrates on the game. Don’t bother to knock then as she may not hear you over the TV, or maybe she just doesn’t want to be interrupted.

After each victory her neighbor down the hall, Jane Randolph, hangs a big “W” on her door until the next Mavis Bell, 107, is ready to watch a recent Cubs game. game. These days it is up there a lot.

SPRINGFIELD – The state of Illinois is seeking permission from the federal government to use Medicaid funding to pay for mental health and substance abuse services that usually aren’t covered under the health insurance program for those living in poverty.

CHICAGO – A state audit found children in the care of Illinois’ welfare system are being housed in psychiatric hospitals and shelters hundreds of days longer than necessary because of the difficulty of finding placements in foster care.

The review of the Department of Children and Family Services was conducted by the state auditor general’s office and released Thursday.

The Chicago Tribune reported that inspectors found one state ward remained in an emergency shelter 357 days last year, far longer than the court-ordered 30 days.

The number of children remaining in psychiatric hospitals longer than medically necessary more than doubled in 2015 from the year before to 168.

The average length of stay for those children went up to 40 days in 2015.

“Meanwhile, the children are suffering,” said Benjamin Wolf, legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois. “I talked to a child who was

Wolf said the audit’s findings are symptoms of inadequate community mental health services and a chronic shortage of appropriate placements for children in the foster care system.

DCFS Director George Sheldon acknowledged in an emailed statement that “this is one of the most intractable issues we have been dealing with.”

The agency responded to the audit with a number of proposed solutions, including a psychiatric hospital tracking database and improved procedures for kids in shelters, which are planned for later this year. DCFS also said it will overhaul the database used to track youth placement.

“We do recognize the children and older youth have been in the hospital too long,” DCFS spokeswoman Veronica Resa said. “One day is too long.”

City to receive $2.3M to help with police overtime costs

CHICAGO – The city of Chicago is receiving more than $2.3 million in federal money to help cover overtime costs for police officers amid a spike in violent crime.

Under the state’s proposal, Medicaid money could be used to pay for services such as supportive housing for people with mental illness, job support for people with substance abuse problems, and certain medica-

tion-based addiction treatments for inmates nearing release from state prison.

State officials believe the proposal would work in concert with new state laws aimed at combating opioid addiction.

The proposal would provide Medicaid recipients with substance abuse problems are short-term residential treatment, case management, withdrawal management and recovery coaching.

Felicia Norwood, director of the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services, said it will take some time for the state to implement the changes if and when the federal government approves the waiver.

Pending federal approval, the changes would be effective July 1.

Thursday the city is among the latest recipients of funding from the Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance.

Bloomington also is getting about $31,000 to buy a 3-D scanner. St. Clair County will receive almost $119,000 for squad car cameras, Tasers and vehicles.

Durbin said the grants will help equip officers “with the best, most up-to-date tools to do their jobs effectively and keep residents safe.”

Maryam Ahmad on Thursday declared her write-in candidacy against Rhonda Crawford in the judicial race. However, the election board ruled because Ahmad lost in the March Democratic primary for judge, she couldn’t run in the Nov. 8 general election.

Work halted on part of oil pipeline project The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEAR THE STANDING ROCK SIOUX RESERVATION, N.D. – The federal government stepped into the fight over the Dakota Access oil pipeline Friday, ordering work to stop on one segment of the project in North Dakota and asking the Texas-based company building it to “voluntarily pause” action on a wider span that an American Indian tribe said holds sacred artifacts.

The government’s order came minutes after a judge rejected a request by the Standing Rock Sioux to halt construction of the $3.8 billion, four-state pipeline.

The tribe, whose cause has drawn thousands to join their protest, has challenged the Army Corps of Engineers’ decision to grant permits for the pipeline at more than 200 water crossings. Tribal leaders allege that the project violates several federal laws and will harm water supplies. The tribe also said ancient sites have been disturbed during construction.

The tribe’s chairman, Dave Archambault II, spoke at the state Capitol in front of several hundred people, some carrying signs that read “Respect Our Water” and “Water Is Sacred.”

He called the federal announcement “a beautiful start” and told reporters that the dispute is a long way from over.

“A public policy win is a lot stronger than a judicial win,” he said. “Our message is heard.”

A joint statement from the Army and the Departments of Justice and the Interior said con-

In denying the tribe’s request for a temporary injunction, U.S. District Judge James Boasberg in Washington said that the court “does not lightly countenance any depredation of lands that hold significance” to the tribe and that, given the federal government’s history with the tribe, the court scrutinized the permitting process “with particular care.”

Nonetheless, the judge wrote, the tribe “has not demonstrated that an injunction is warranted here.”

More cases of superbug precursor reported

The Associated Press NEW YORK – A fourth U.S. person has been diagnosed with bacteria resistant to a last resort antibiotic, but researchers are expressing relief that so far these superbug precursors have not spread to others.

The latest case is a 2-year-old Connecticut girl who was diagnosed earlier this year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Friday.

She and three other Americans have been found to have E. coli bacteria that were resistant to an important medicine called colistin. Colistin is an old, powerful drug with significant side effects that is reserved for germs that already resist other important antibiotics.

Health officials have worried that the colistin-resistant bacteria will spread their special trait to bacteria already resistant to other medicines, setting the stage for true superbug infections that are impervious to all known antibiotics.

For example, researchers reported last week a worrisome case of a 76-yearold man treated in 2014 at a New Jersey hospital. In follow-up testing this year, he was found to have been infected by a

WASHINGTON – The man who shot President Ronald Reagan is scheduled to leave a Washington mental hospital for good on Saturday, more than 35 years after the shooting. A federal judge ruled in July that the 61-year-old John Hinckley is not a danger to himself or the public and can live full-time at his mother’s home in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Hinckley had already been visiting Williamsburg for long stretches at a time and preparing for the full-time transition. He’ll have to follow a lot of rules while in Williamsburg, but his longtime lawyer Barry Levine said he thinks Hinckley will be a “citizen about whom we can all be proud.”

The Connecticut girl developed diarrhea during a June trip to the Caribbean. It turns out another bug caused her symptoms, one that she probably picked up from something she ate. But lab testing revealed she also was carrying E. coli that carried colistin resistance, said Maroya Walters, a CDC epidemiologist who investigated the case.

She recovered, Walters said. Six family members were tested and none tested positive for bacteria carrying the colistin-resistance gene, called mcr-1 by scientists. The CDC on Friday also updated an investigation into one of the four other colistin-resistant cases, a Pennsylvania woman whose case was first reported in May. Investigators were not able to determine where she picked up her infection, but they tested more than 100 people but found no evidence it had spread to anyone else.

Based on what researchers seen so far, “we’re hopeful that the risk of transmission to otherwise healthy people is relatively low,” said Dr. Alexander Kallen, a CDC epidemiologist who worked on the case.

The North is already under the toughest sanctions it has faced in decades because of its January nuclear test.

More now are almost certain, although some experts question whether North Korea has anything significant left to apply effective sanctions to. Advocates of a tougher approach are hoping the latest test will galvanize support from China and Russia, which have not been totally on board with Washington’s approach to Pyongyang.

So why does Pyongyang insist on stirring the pot?

Its flurry of demonstrations of military might this year may reflect a greater sense of urgency to prove it can make good on Kim Jong Un’s vow to build ever better nukes while also keeping its economy afloat despite all of the pressure, isolation and international sanctions that policy generates.

There are indications it is, in reality, making progress on both fronts.

Largely thanks to continued business with China and Russia, the North’s economy – although hardly robust – long ago emerged from the disastrous famine years of the 1990s and now shows signs of a growing domestic consumer market, where small-time entrepreneurialism is allowed and sometimes tacitly supported by the authorities.

TOKYO – Mark up another first for North Korea – two nuclear tests in one year. And that’s not all. With leader Kim Jong Un smiling broadly all the while, bigger and better ballistic missiles have been flying off the North’s shores, and now even from under its waters, at breakneck pace.

Alarming? Certainly. Surprising?

Hardly.

With few other options, or allies to rally behind it, this is how Pyongyang likes to play its cards in the power game that is northeast Asian politics. The question is whether it can play them well enough to get what its ruling regime really wants: international recognition, security guarantees and, at the most fundamental level, its own continued survival.

This is shaping up to be the busiest year for North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs. It rang in 2016 with what it said was its first H-bomb test and has been shooting off various kinds of long-range missiles – including one from a submarine – more frequently than normal. It conducted its second nuclear test of the year Friday, this time to indicate it can arm those ballistic missiles it’s been testing with nuclear-tipped warheads.

While most of the world has singled Pyongyang’s nuclear program out as a dangerous source of instability on the peninsula, North Korea has consistently said it needs a nuclear deterrent to what it believes is a very real threat from the United States.

The two countries are, after all, still technically at war. The 1950-53 Korean conflict ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty.

Right after announcing its test, the North’s state-run Korean Central News Agency once again made that argument.

“The U.S. desperate moves for unilaterally putting sanctions and stifling the DPRK are a hideous crime against humanity aimed at subversion of the social system of a sovereign country,” the report said, using the acronym for North Korea’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

“The U.S. should never underestimate the tremendous mental power and inexhaustible might of the DPRK,” it added. “The U.S. will be made to clearly see how the DPRK rises imposingly out of chains of sanctions, blockade and pressure.”

That’s been Pyongyang’s position for decades. And it hasn’t gotten a lot of traction.

It’s hard to imagine in North Korea’s case, but it worked for India and Pakistan. With elections coming up in the United States, Pyongyang may see this as an opportune time to send a message.

But Pyongyang also has reasons to be nervous.

Over the past few years, its anxieties have been heightened by attacks on its human rights record in the United Nations and suggestions Kim should be brought before an international tribunal for crimes against humanity. Add to that reports that annual U.S.-South Korea military exercises now include training for “decapitation strikes” on Kim and other leaders, and Washington’s decision in June to list Kim himself as a sanctioned individual.

Pyongyang is also deeply concerned by an agreement between Washington and Seoul to base America’s most advanced missile defense system, known by its acronym, THAAD, in the South, a move that has angered Beijing as well.

Remembering, and honoring, those lost in 2001 terrorist attacks The nation wept 15 years ago.

Four passenger airliners were hijacked by members of al-Qaida with the intent of flying them into buildings. Three of them reached their targets – the north and south towers of the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Virginia.

A fourth plane crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers tried to subdue the hijackers.

The towers crumbled to the ground. About 3,000 people were killed.

And we wept. How could we not? As we watched planes fly into buildings, as the magnitude of the loss enveloped us, as we realized that the field in Pennsylvania was evidence of an unimaginable sacrifice those brave souls made, our tears were a sign of the love and compassion we had for our fellow Americans.

There was resilience, as we vowed to hold accountable those responsible for the carnage. And there was a sense of solidarity as the country came together as one. We were united in our grief, but also in our pride for our country, and vowed that from the dust our country would rise stronger.

In 2001, we promised we would do right by those lost, and honor their memories by being better than the cowards who attacked us. We vowed to never forget.

Fifteen years later, at times it seems remembering appears to be something we have forgotten.

Sept. 11 often seems more like a historical event we recall, not one we lived through. Fewer people were alive that day – this year’s high school freshmen, for instance, weren’t alive when it happened.

And unity? That seems nonexistent. We are a country divided among so many fault lines we can’t keep count. We seem to relish exposing our differences.

But it’s not too late to change direction.

Sunday, we will remember. And we may weep again as we pay tribute to the deceased, to the passengers who fought the hijackers, and the firefighters, police officers and first responders who ran toward the carnage as everyone headed the other way. We will pray for their souls, and ask God for understanding and blessings upon the families of those they left behind.

But we also can recall the love that permeated the country 15 years ago, and that camaraderie we felt for our fellow Americans. We can celebrate our similarities.

We can channel that spirit that rose 15 years ago, and as we did then, strive for unity.

To the Editor: The fall semester has started at Kishwaukee College, and once again we begin our important work of helping individuals achieve their educational goals.

We are pleased with our enrollment numbers, with nearly 4,000 students choosing to attend Kishwaukee College this fall. Enrollments are critical – not only do they help our fiscal position, they also signal that we are helping meet education and workforce needs in our region.

Funding challenges are at the forefront of many discussions on higher education, and this is especially true in Illinois for the past year and a half.

The scarcity of resources has caused us to consider priorities and how we best serve our communities. We can no longer afford to do

Current funding and past enrollment challenges are forcing Kish to change, and change is hard. But it also provides an opportunity for us to be creative and imaginative, and be clear in our mission.

Our college priorities and program offerings must be focused on student learning – what and how our students learn, and understanding that everyone at the college has a role in supporting the learning experience.

What happens in our classrooms, student organizations, enrollment and counseling services, how we maintain our facilities, and how we work with our external partners is all focused on enhancing the student experience. As an institution, we have the ability to become what we want and need to be for our students and stakeholders.

Building on our vision, faculty and staff are setting department goals

related to enrollment, private-public partnerships and continuous quality improvement. We are moving together as a college to support our students and ensure they have a quality experience at the college.

A fellow educational leader recently commented in a public forum that I was “thrown into the deep end” when I first arrived at Kish. The good news is that I know how to swim, and have been fortunate to work and live in an area extremely supportive of its community college.

We will use the challenges as opportunities, and continue to serve those attending Kishwaukee College as part of their higher education learning journey.

I am honored and proud to be leading Kishwaukee College during this time of challenge and transformation.

Tilting and whirling at the fair

The sight of Percherons makes me happy, so do deep-fried cheese curds, newborn lambs, and those designer chickens with feathery pom-pom anklets, and then you enter the Horticulture Building and see pumpkins the size of studio apartments, large enough to house a man and his wife, so today I am happy, having attended the Minnesota State Fair, our Mardi Gras, when normally cautious people can go out and be jovial in public.

My wife is not a fair person. Her problem is good taste and a limited tolerance for gluttony and barkers and violent centrifugal experiences in motorized contraptions operated by tattooed men who might have done prison time for larceny. But my daughter is fairbred, so I have company.

We fair people don’t care that many people don’t like the fair and want to tell us why. Many people don’t care for Bach. So what? Sew buttons on your underwear. What is not to like about a public event at which a quarter-million people jostle around happily, doped up on animal fats, in the uproar of motors

and music and the yawp and bark of men hawking beer and pretzels and snow blowers and an amazing blender that will slice, dice, chop, mince or puree and once you have it you will wonder how you ever managed without it?

The River Run is my daughter’s favorite ride: You climb aboard a raft and buckle your seat belt and float down a sluiceway over a series of rapids and waterfalls, which takes about two minutes. We call it the Pee Ride because when it’s over, I look as if I couldn’t wait for the men’s room. This makes her convulse with helpless laughter, seeing her old dad with wet pants. And how often does a person get to experience helpless convulsive laughter? When was your last H.C.L. experience, dear reader? So I do my part to be a laughingstock and we walk down the street laughing and have a last delicious glass of Kool-Aid and a frozen custard and go home and wait for next year.

So intense and tumultuous is the fair, the crowds, the hurly-burly, the screams of young women being flung into the air, the enormous animals being herded through the pedestrian flow toward the show ring, that you notice people forgetting to snap pictures with their

smartphones. Instead of documenting the experience, they experience it and are transported by it and don’t need images and don’t need to text each other their current locations and ETAs, but simply float in the river of humanity and absorb the cacophony and kaleidoscopic spectacle of it all. This is remarkable.

Even teenagers get caught up in it.

Nobody on the Tilt-A-Whirl is texting to someone, “I 8 2 corndogs & feel nause8d.” They are totally whirling and tilting.

The fair is an escape from digitology and other obsessions, phobias and intolerances, also a vacation from the presidential election which has obsessed many people I know, including myself, the presumptuous Republican nominee in particular: We are addicted to the dread and disbelief he inspires. This man, who has commanded American journalism for more than a year, is a small sideshow, less prominent at the fair than John Deere tractors or the Miracle of Birth Center where you can see hens lay eggs and pet baby lambs and calves and piglets.

I try to take a balanced view of him.

He has done a good deal to make young people aware of where Mexico is. If you

can build a wall along the border, that means it is contiguous to the United States, right? This is an advance.

According to a National Geographic survey, 29 percent of young Americans can’t identify the Pacific Ocean. Thanks to Donald Trump, they know something about Mexico and also that Kenya is not part of our country. If geography can make a comeback, perhaps civics will, too.

One comes away from the fair a couple pounds heavier and an ounce wiser. We live in a land of great domestic calm when a quarter million persons commingle with hardly a cop in sight.

The diversified farm of my childhood is gone, the factory farm is here for good, but food is plentiful. It was a good year.

The economy is robust, judging from the long lines at the hot buttered corn stand.

White middle-aged male anger? Maybe so, but the candidate who claims to speak to that is a horse’s hindquarters.

You pass a hundred of those in the horse barn, and he’s not one of the better-looking ones.

Clinton, Trump fail to understand free speech

Donald Trump tells reporters, “We’re going to have people sue you like you never got sued before.”

Hillary Clinton doesn’t like her opponents funding documentaries that criticize her, so she demands Congress overturn the Supreme Court decision that allows it.

The world is full of people who want their enemies to shut up. Some college students get so upset seeing “Trump 2016” chalked on sidewalks that they call the police, demanding the chalkers be punished and their words erased.

But because America’s founders added, “Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech” to the Constitution, the police have no role here.

Those idiot college protesters want to shut me up. And I want to shut some of them up. But we have to tolerate each other. That’s a good thing.

The First Amendment helps keep America free.

Of course, the Amendment just says, “Congress shall make no law.”

Private groups can limit speech. Fox can fire me if they don’t like something I say. So can this newspaper by dropping my column.

The First Amendment applies to government. Which is why presidential candidates should get it right. Unfortunately, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton don’t.

Both have talked about “closing down” parts of the internet to fight ISIS. When frightened, some politicians promise all kinds of things to look like they’re protecting us. But shutting down those areas of the internet may not be technically possible, and if it were, it would mostly hurt innocent people.

That didn’t stop Trump or Clinton from proposing it and making sneering comments about free speech.

They should know that rules meant to prevent ISIS from speaking can soon become laws to suppress any opinions that politicians don’t like.

The same men who created our Constitution turned around a few years later

and passed the Alien and Sedition Acts, which punished people for insulting politicians, as if criticizing politicians was a threat to social order. Governments in Russia, China and Saudi Arabia still think that way.

I say not criticizing politicians is a threat to social order.

Both Trump and Clinton want to ban flag burning. But burning a flag is a form of speech, as long as you own the flag and don’t endanger anyone.

Government bans should be limited to real threats.

Trump says, “We’re going to open up those libel laws, so that when The New York Times writes a hit piece which is a total disgrace, or when The Washington Post ... writes a hit piece, we can sue them and win money instead of having no chance of winning.”

It’s true that libel law protects people like me so we can say what we want. I can criticize a public figure or get facts wrong, and courts will allow it as long as I wasn’t malicious – I didn’t know I had facts wrong. It’s a good rule; it allows media to criticize the powerful.

In his speech, Trump added, “With me, they’re not protected because I’m not like other people.” Right. Because

Donald Trump is rich, he intimidates critics into silence by threatening to bankrupt them with lawsuits. This is not a good thing.

Hillary Clinton is a lawyer, so you’d think she would have a more sophisticated view of free speech. But she doesn’t.

She once tried to ban the sale of violent video games to minors, arguing, “We need to treat violent video games the way we treat alcohol.” But video games are not alcohol; video games are ideas – speech.

Her argument was ridiculous anyway. Violence in video games has become even more prevalent, but crime has dropped and young people are less violent.

We’ll never eliminate everything that offends or “triggers” people, whether they’re Christian, Muslim, pro-Trump or so anti-Trump that they call the police when students chalk his name on a sidewalk.

I wish the next president was someone who understood that.

Barbs’ 21-point lead slips away

ecarifio@shawmedia.com ROSELLE – For two quarters, it looked as if the DeKalb football team would be cruising to its third straight win to start the season.

But then Lake Park stepped up on both sides of the ball, erasing a three-touchdown deficit at the half and holding off a late DeKalb drive in a 2821 loss for the Barbs on Friday.

DeKalb coach Matt Weckler said he thinks his team can learn from the experience of their first loss of the year.

“It teaches us lessons of getting better at what we need to do,” Weckler said. “We’ve got conference coming up with Sycamore next week, and we’re looking forward to it.”

With the score tied at 21, DeKalb’s Derek Kyler punted the ball to the 3-yard line of the Lancers with 2:04 left.

On the first play, quarterback Jackson Behles lobbed it about 35 yards down field to Johnny Pacione. Fellow Lancers receiver Danny Spejcher leveled a DeKalb defender with a block, Pacione broke away and sprinted the rest of the way for the score.

The Barbs (2-1) took over on their 42, and worked the ball up the field with short sideline passes, reaching the Lancers’ 25 with 8 seconds left.

The referee stopped play and made top receiver Cole Tucker come off the field because his kneepads were out of place. Tucker took off his helmet and the Barbs were penalized 15 yards.

After a spike on third down from the 40 to allow Tucker back on the field, the Hail Mary pass was batted away, and the Lancers walked away with the win.

Weckler said he was disappointed with the timing of the call.

“I said, ‘You could have called it at any point in the game, and that’s when you call it?’ ” Weckler said. “In the heat of battle, pads are going to adjust. I didn’t disagree with the call, I disagreed with when they called it. But that doesn’t have anything to do with the result of the game at all.”

The Barbs exploded for three TDs in the second quarter, all by Jelante Young, to take a 21-0 lead into halftime.

The Barbs started the third quarter with the ball, but Kyler threw his first interception of the season, and the Lancers (2-1) put together a long drive to score, converting on two fourth downs, including a 37-yard scoring pass from Behles to Spejcher on fourth and 2.

Both proved to be extremely costly, as the Olympians turned them both into touchdowns and prevailed, 19-13.

“It was those turnovers, and we had way too many penalties,” Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly said. “But I told the kids we’re going to have a lot of positive things to come from this game.”

“We were right there until the end and we’ll take a look at it and see what we could’ve changed,” Fedderly said. “I thought it was a positive for us. We’ll look at the film and see what it came down to and we’ll learn from it.”

No easy bounceback for NIU after loss Huskies face tall task in South Fla.

After opening the season with a heartbreaking triple-overtime loss last weekend at Wyoming, the Huskies will try to bounce back against a talented South Florida squad at 6 p.m. at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa – hoping to avoid the first 0-2 start since 2008.

“Their (running) back and their quarterback are exceptional, and all of their wide receivers are good,” Huskies coach Rod Carey said. “Their O-line is big and physical. They play downhill on you. Their offense is as good as we’ve probably played in a while.”

Although there are rumblings Bulls star running back Marlon Mack (1,381 rushing yards last year) might not play because of a concussion he suffered in Week 1, South Florida features dual-threat quarterback Quinton Flowers, who threw for 2,296 yards and 22 touchdowns and rushed for 991 yards in 2015.

In the Bulls’ 56-20 win over Towson to start the year, Flowers was 8 for 18 for 178 yards, two touchdowns and an interception and ran for 46 yards and two scores.

“You can’t just go ahead and do things that are going to allow him seams to run the ball, whether it’s by design or scramble,” Carey said of Flowers. “You have to go ahead and be cognizant of where he is all the time. I think that’s a big part.”

Carey said, while giving credit to Wyoming, he believes the Huskies should have won their opening game but played sloppy – 12 penalties and a fumble in the first overtime.

Watson’s pick-6 highlights shutout

sports@daily-chronicle.com There was no opportunity for Braden Watson to showcase his shifty running style on offense.

South Beloit had seen Hiawatha’s senior running back on film. It knew his litany of moves are executed as if he is controlled by a joystick. As he faced eight- and nine-man Sobos’ defensive fronts, Watson made the most of his opportunity on defense in a 21-0 win against South Beloit on Friday night in Kirkland.

A 57-yard interception return for a touchdown allowed Watson to put his speed on display to stake Hiawatha to a 7-0 halftime lead.

“They had a good game plan defensively,” Hiawatha coach Jason Keneway said. “They had a lock on Braden as they stacked the box with eight and nine guys. We struggled to get the pass

game going but kept grinding out run plays until we wore them out in the second half.

“Braden was able to scoop up a pick and really just used his speed to break away. His interception really lit a spark in our team.”

With a few halftime adjustments, the Hiawatha (2-1) offense found second-half success against a South Beloit (0-3) defense that had been stingy.

After the Hiawatha defense stopped South Beloit at the Hawks’ 5-yard line to force a turnover on downs, a 79-yard touchdown pass from Ethan Hoffman to Jacob Edwards with 4:47 left in the third quarter gave the Hawks a 14-0 lead.

Hoffman was 5 for 16 for 140 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions. He took advantage of Edwards’ size and athletic ability on the touchdown pass. It was only a 15-yard throw, but Edwards bat-

tled a defensive back for the ball and made a quick escape for the long score.

But it was the Hawks’ defensive effort that stood out to Keneway.

“It’s been a long time since a Hiawatha defense has been this good,” Keneway said. “They won us the game. The stop of South Beloit on the 5-yard line was huge because it kept us ahead.”

The running game finally paid off in the fourth quarter when Watson (20 carries, 109 yards) was able to rip off a 16-yard touchdown run with 11:21 left in the game. It provided breathing room for the Hawks and the final margin.

“That was absolutely the culmination of a great drive,” Keneway said. “The offensive line put their foot on the gas, and Braden did what he always does and made guys miss.”

Iverson, Shaq headline emotional Hall of Fame ceremony

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) – When Shaquille O’Neal was 10, his father made a prediction.

Friday night when his son became a Hall of Famer, it was realized.

Shaq and Allen Iverson headlined the 10-member Class of 2016 enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. One of the most star-packed classes in recent memory, it also featured Yao Ming, WNBA great Sheryl Swoopes, coach Tom Izzo, and owner Jerry Reinsdorf, an architect in the Michael Jordan-led Bulls championship teams of the 1990s.

“If I know my father, he’s up there arguing with Wilt (Chamberlain) that his son is the best big man in the game,” Shaq said.

Posthumous honorees were: 27-year NBA referee Darell Garretson; John McLendon, the first black coach in a professional league; Zelmo Beaty, the former NBA and ABA star who led Prairie View to an NAIA title in 1962; and Cumberland Posey, who is also a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

ROCK FALLS – It was a simple play. Send four guys on a “Go” route and see who quarterback Zach Butler can find. Genoa-Kingston used that play call sparingly, but when he did, it made the Cogs go.

Butler hooked up with two different receivers for big gains to twist the dagger into Rock Falls in a 28-6 win over the Rockets on Friday night at Hinders Field.

“I saw three deep safeties, and one of them got sucked up to one side of the field and found Dan [Guardi],” Butler said. “It was a fun play, seeing him take all those guys down the field.”

The play with Guardi happened on the first drive of the fourth quarter. The play went for 54 yards, and set up one of tailback Aidan Simmons’ three touchdown runs.

The other went for a 63-yard touchdown reception by Zach Miller to open the scoring in the second quarter, after a lackluster scoreless first

pass on a fourth-and-10 from the 20 at the end of third quarter. A rash of penalties squashed any hopes at sustaining drives. The Rockets had 13 penalties for 95 yards.

The Cogs (3-0) weren’t much better in that department, walking back 102 yards on 11 penalties, but they made up for it with big plays and a smash-mouth running game.

G-K rushed for 229 yards on 43 carries, including Guardi’s game-high 128.

Guardi broke off several big gains on outside rushes, broke through tackle after tackle, and led the way as the Cogs stormed down the field at will in the second half.

“To get those extra yards was huge,” Guardi said. “It ís all for my teammates. I want to play hard for them because I know my O-line is working their butts off to get us some room.”

Added Butler of his running back: “Man, Dan and Aidan run so hard. You can tell the other teams don’t want to tackle them after halftime. They’ll wear you out.”

sports@daily-chronicle.com Binghamton scored a goal in the first half and spoiled the Northern Illinois men’s soccer team’s home opener by defeating the Huskies, 1-0, Friday night in DeKalb.

The Huskies (0-3-2) outshot the Bearcats 12-8 – including 8-4 in the second half – but couldn’t come away with a goal.

“Once again, for the fifth time this season, the collective performance was good,” NIU coach Eric Luzzi said. “We were on the front foot for the vast majority of the game, we created some very good chances, although not quite as many as we have the last couple games. I think in a couple of moments we just needed an extra bit of quality to pull something off or finish a combination or put a shot on frame. Those are tiny details, but, obviously, they are a big deal right now.”

The Huskies will play host to No. 12 Utah Valley at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

PREP GIRLS GOLF Royals top ACC: Playing through

wet conditions, Hinckley-Big Rock cruised to a 238-253 victory over Aurora Central Catholic at Indian Oaks Country Club.

Texans have edge on ‘D,’ RB Bears might have better QB, O-line, but will that be enough?

The Houston Texans are a better football team than the Bears, and if all things were equal, this seemingly would be an easy season opener to pick.

But all things are rarely equal in the NFL, and some last-minute gyrations on the offensive BEARS INSIDER lines of both clubs have Hub magnified a Arkush few cracks the Bears might just be able to step into and balance the scales a bit.

Coming off a 9-7, AFC South championship season, the Texans return the NFL’s third-ranked defense, and they spent big in free agency and the draft to theoretically improve themselves at quarterback, receiver and on the offensive line, and clearly improved themselves at running back.

The Bears get a clear edge at quarterback, where, love him or hate him, Jay Cutler is vastly more experienced, accomplished, athletic and has a much bigger arm than Texans newbie Brock Osweiler.

Houston gets the edge at running back, where Lamar Miller very well could prove to be the best 2016 freeagent signing at any position – Miller has a 4.6-yard career average a carry and averaged 5.1 yards in 2014, his only season with more than 200

carries – while Jeremy Langford, Ka’Deem Carey and Jordan Howard have three NFL starts between them.

The wideout spot is a draw. Houston’s DeAndre Hopkins and the Bears’ Alshon Jeffery both are Pro Bowlers with All-Pro potential, and both clubs have talented options alongside who are all unproven with the exception of Eddie Royal.

WR White questionable for season opener

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com LAKE FOREST – Bears receiver Kevin White was limited in Friday’s practice with a hamstring injury and is questionable for Sunday’s season opener in Houston. It will be White’s NFL regular-season debut, if he can play.

“I think everybody’s different. I think some people deal with it different than others,” coach John Fox said about how the injury could affect White. “Obviously, that’s a muscle group that’s important, especially in top-end running.

We’ll kind of evaluate that as we get closer. We don’t have to make those decisions until an hour and a half before kickoff, and we probably won’t.”

Fox said the fact that White missed his entire rookie year “doesn’t have any effect now whether he’s ready this week or not.”

NFL teams no longer are using the

“probable” designation in injury reports, so the following Bears all are questionable for Sunday: guard Kyle Long (shoulder), defensive backs Kyle Fuller (knee), Deon Bush (hamstring) and Bryce Callahan (groin), receiver Deonte Thompson (knee/ankle), defensive lineman Cornelius Washington (ankle/knee), fullback Paul Lasike (wrist) and receiver Josh Bellamy Kevin White (shoulder), who was added to the injury list Friday.

The Bears will announce their inactive players at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, which is when we’ll learn which of the questionable starters among White, Long and Fuller are ready to go.

Captains named: The Bears’ players voted for five captains for the 2016 season – quarterback Jay Cutler and receiver Alshon Jeffery on offense,

linebackers Pernell McPhee and Danny Trevathan on defense and Sherrick McManis on special teams. Fox will have a rotating sixth captain for the coin toss each week.

McPhee got the honor from his teammates despite the fact he’s starting the season on the physically unable-to-perform list.

“You don’t see them, but they’re in there working,” Fox said. “They’re in the meetings. They’re around the football team a lot more than just on the practice field.”

In his first year with the Bears, Trevathan – the team’s most important free-agent signing – is the other captain for the defense.

“I feel honored to be a captain,” Trevathan said. “It doesn’t stop there, though. I know it comes from work and pushing and trying to push myself to be great along with these guys. I’m honored and I’m excited to get started.”

Bryant, Lester help Cubs blank Astros The ASSOCIATED PRESS

HOUSTON – Kris Bryant hit a tworun homer, Jon Lester threw seven scoreless innings and Hector Rondon and Aroldis Chapman completed the shutout to give the Cubs a 2-0 win over the Houston Astros on Friday night.

It was Bryant’s first career game against the Astros, who passed on him with the first pick in the 2013 draft to take starter Mark Appel, who was traded to Philadelphia this offseason Jon Lester before ever playing in the majors.

Bryant, taken second in that draft, gave Houston an up-close look at what could have been when he smacked his 37th homer off Joe Musgrove (2-4) to the seats in left field to put the Cubs up 2-0 in the fifth inning.

Lester (16-4) allowed seven hits and struck out seven for his seventh

straight win. He hasn’t lost since July 3, allowing just four runs in the seven outings since.

Chapman struck out one in a perfect ninth for his 13th save.

White Sox 7, Royals 2: At Chicago, Carlos Rodon struck out a season-high nine over six innings, Adam Eaton doubled twice and scored two runs and the Sox beat Kansas City to prevent the Royals from gaining ground in the playoff race.

Rodon (7-8) fanned Paulo Orlando with the bases loaded on his 116th pitch to end the sixth inning and move to 5-0 in his past seven starts.

Kendrys Morales had a two-run single in the first inning for Kansas City, which has dropped six of nine and remained four games behind the second wild card after Detroit beat Baltimore.

Eaton doubled to lead off the first and fifth innings off Yordano Ventura (10-10) and scored each time on Melky Cabrera RBIs. Tyler Saladino had three hits and drove in two runs in the Sox’s third straight win over a playoff contender.

This Sunday, the Bears might actually rate a slight edge on the offensive line, as the arrival of Josh Sitton and shifting of rookie Cody Whitehair to center offers significant promise.

Houston, on the other hand, will be without All-Pro left tackle Duane Brown, who will be replaced by Chris Clark – a backup for John Fox and Bears offensive line coach Dave Magazu in Denver – and Greg Mancz will start at center after Nick Martin – the younger brother of the Cowboys All-Pro guard Zach – who was drafted six spots ahead of Whitehair to be the Texans’ starter is out for the year.

Unfortunately for the Bears, the gap widens considerably when you start to compare defenses.

The Bears are significantly improved in the front seven, and Eddie Goldman, in particular, could give Mancz fits, while Akiem Hicks, Danny Trevathan and Jerrell Freeman significantly improve the run defense.

But the Bears’ defense is trying to make a move from 21st in the league

The Texans’ front seven featuring NFL Defensive MVP J.J. Watt, Vince Wilfork, Whitney Mercilus, Brian Cushing, Benardrick McKinney and Jadeveon Clowney just might be the best in football.

Wilfork on Whitehair seems almost unfair, and if the Texans match Watt up with Bobby Massie and send Clowney behind them with Mercilus coming after Charles Leno, Houston could enjoy a huge advantage in the pass rush and Cutler could take a beating.

Houston also has a huge edge in the secondary, where Kareem Jackson and Johnathan Joseph are among the better pairs of cover corners in the league, and safeties Quintin Demps and Andre Hal aren’t special but are several notches ahead of Adrian Amos and Harold Jones-Quartey.

If the Bears can run the ball effectively, eat a ton of clock and make a play or two at the end, they’ll have a shot.

But if they can’t slow Miller on the ground and are forced to try to win it through the air on offense, it could make for a long and painful Sunday.

Dear reader: Medicines can help, and they have improved “quit rates.” Although smoking is a particularly hard habit to break, you can do it. The proof: There are more ex-smokers in the United States today than there are smokers.

Cigarette smoke contains many different substances that damage the tissues of the body and increase the risk of cancer. But those damaging substances are not what make you addicted to cigarettes.

Nicotine, one of the many dangerous chemicals found in cigarettes, is what makes you addicted. It doesn’t damage your tissues; it just makes you want to smoke. Each hit of nicotine produces pleasure. But as nicotine leaves the body, you begin to experience uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms, and this prompts you to reach for another cigarette.

There are some deals in which only overtricks are at stake. Then, it is usually interesting solely if the deal is in a duplicate pair game scored by matchpoints.

Suppose every deal is played 11 times. If all of the North-South pairs are in four spades making five, each gets an average: 5 matchpoints. But if one declarer brings home a 12th trick, he gets a top of 10 points while every other North-South pair scores only 4.5.

Today’s deal occurred many years ago during a duplicate at the former Beverly Bridge Club in New York City.

Most North-South pairs stopped in four spades, but a couple of ambitious bidders reached six spades.

What happened after West led a low heart?

At the end of the session, two players had this conversation, the first to speak believing himself to be an expert.

“Can you believe that our opponent dropped the singleton king offside on that deal?”

“How did the play go?”

“I won the first trick with the heart jack and tried to cash the ace, but declarer ruffed and cashed the spade ace. Did he find the play against you?”

“No, he did not.”

“Lucky you.”

Not so lucky. The second player had won the first trick with his heart ace and returned the heart queen.

Now South understandably placed the heart king with West and, by deduction, the spade king with East.

Hiding key information from declarer is an essential part of expert defense.
