Where did the summer go?

Here it is September, school is back in session, and one wonders what happened to the lazy, hazy days of summer.

Last I remember, it was Memorial Day and we were thinking about a trip out West. Now, Labor Day is past and the longer nights are creeping up on us, the crops will be ready to pick soon, and the Christmas displays are sneaking into the stores. If you blink once more, Halloween and Thanksgiving will be past and the first snowflakes will appear.

But summer wasn’t wasted for some, who found a myriad of events and attractions to fill the days and nights. Can you even remember what you did in June and July?

Let’s make a list. Did you: • Plant a garden or help Dan Kenney harvest one of his • Fish, boat or water ski • Go to a car show, tractor show, Steam Power Show, Pioneer Day or Corn Fest • Attend a concert in the park or a play at Stagecoach • Take part in a family reunion or a parade • Visit a zoo, museum or art gallery in DeKalb County or elsewhere • Take your family or yourself on a trip out of state • Travel to a state park or forest preserve for a hike or a picnic • Take in a ballgame, drum corps show, or stock car race • Play croquet, horseshoes, softball or even fly a kite?

NEW CASTLE, Del. – Authorities in Delaware say a semitrailer carrying 45,000 pounds of unstamped pennies overturned on northbound Interstate 95, spilling its load and jamming traffic.

Annual celebration to swing through the weekend

SANDWICH – For more than 40 years, sisters Dianne Leifheit of DeKalb and Nancy Didier of Sycamore have attended the Sandwich fair together.

“When we were younger, we did 4-H, and now we come once a year, usually together,” Didier said. “Our family all comes, usually on their own. It’s something we’ve done every year, and we love coming. We love seeing the horticulture, the animals and eating all of the great food.”

The 129th annual Sandwich Fair opened Wednesday and will run through Sunday at the Sandwich Fairgrounds, 1401 Suydam Road. On average, between 190,000 to 240,000 people attend the fair each year. This year’s fair features more than 300 vendors.

Sandwich Fair Vice President and General Livestock Superintendent Ken Tyrrell said that although there has been no funding from the state because of Illinois’ budget impasse, exhibition and season ticket sales have been about average.

“Every year, the fair changes, and we always have so much to see here,” Tyrrell said. “As the Northern Zone Director of the Illinois Association of Agricultural Fairs, I travel and visit a lot of different fairs around Illinois. We have the largest and best-attended fair in the state.”

Upcoming entertainment at the fair will include a performance by country music artist Frankie Ballard at 8 tonight, NTPA sanctioned tractor pulls at 12:30 and 6:30 p.m.

Saturday, and demolition derbies at 1 and 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Two years ago, the wooden grandstand built in 1913 was removed.

Permanent bleachers were added to the grandstand area and attendees can sit on portable bleachers for infield seating.

Last year, a private tent for mothers with babies was added to the fair. Tyrrell said that the fair had so much positive feedback about the tent last year, a second tent for mothers wanting to nurse and change their babies’ diapers has been added.

Another change made this year was the addition of the Hospitality Pavilion, sponsored in part by Heartland Bank. The pavilion provides a

Tyrrell said that even though the fair changes a little every year, it still somehow remains the same.

“I think what brings people back every year is friendship, the people you meet,” he said. “Generations of people come to the fair, three or four generations of people coming back year after year. It brings people together. It’s a wonderful time.”

This weekend, Penguin Project presents: ‘Shrek the Musical Jr.’

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – For the past three years, Garett Shuck and Jessica Stanbery have performed on stage together seamlessly.

Shuck, 22, of Cortland, has participated in DeKalb-based Children’s Community Theatre’s Penguin Project since the program started in 2010.

The program gives children and adults ages 10 to 22 with disabilities the opportunity to perform in Broadway-style musical productions.

Actors in the program are called artists, and each is paired with a mentor, who memorizes the same lines and aides the performance.

Stanbery, 21, of Sycamore, has been Shuck’s mentor through three productions.

Shuck, an only child, considers those involved in the Penguin Project an extension of his family. Before the opening of the Penguin Project’s first show – “Annie,” in which Shuck played Daddy Warbucks – he gave a pre-show speech where he described how the cast had become a family.

“The message has stuck with everyone involved ever since, and it has become second nature for everyone to talk about ‘my Penguin family,’ ” Penguin Project producer Joe King said.

Shuck will give his final performances with the Penguin Project in its production of “Shrek the Musical Jr.,” which runs through Sunday at the DeKalb High School auditorium.

In “Shrek Jr.,” Shuck plays the Big Bad Wolf.

“I just like being a Penguin,” he said. “Being a Penguin is my family.”

Shuck’s mother and stepfather, Dave and Jill Young, had no idea of his acting chops before “Annie.”

Shuck had been involved in sports, but had never appeared in a play.

“That first year, he found his niche,” Dave Young said during a recent rehearsal at DeKalb High School. “He found what he loves to do.”

There are 35 artists and 32 mentors in this year’s production. They are supported by many more parents and volunteers, King said.

Born: Sept. 20, 1941; in Aurora, IL Died: Sept. 7, 2016; in Sycamore, IL David Paul Artabasy was born Sept.

20, 1941, in Aurora, IL. His parents were Helen Marie (Bricker) Artabasy and Theodore P. Artabasy. He died Sept. 7, 2016, at Kindred Hospital in Sycamore, IL, after living six years with pulmonary hypertension.

Raised in Aurora, David graduated from Marmion Academy in 1959. He earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Loras College in Dubuque, IA, in 1963, and an MBA from Northern Illinois University in 1972.

After his graduation from Loras, he took an auditing position with Haskins & Sells in Chicago. A year later, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, taking basic training at Paris Island, SC, and advanced training at Camp LeJeune, NC. After active duty he served in the Marine Reserves.

David came to NIU in 1965 as an internal auditor. He became business manager for NIU’s College of Business in 1975. Assisting the college and university through many years of growth and change, he served for eight years as the operating staff representative of the Joint University Advisory Committee to the board of regents.

After 35 years of service at NIU, he retired in January 2001. He was an accomplished golfer, a long-suffering Cubs fan and a keen political observer. He was a member of the DeKalb Elks and a charter member of the NIU Huskies Athletic

Association.

Thanks to his friends for supporting David throughout his illness and for the doctors and nurses who cared for him.

David’s parents and his sister, Teresa Grandolfo, preceded him in death.

David’s survivors include brother, James Artabasy (Susan Smalley), East Lansing, MI; nieces and nephews, Patti Grandolfo, Westchester, IL, Timothy Grandolfo, (Esther Conolly), Kennah, TX, Michael Artabasy, DeKalb, IL, Karen Artabasy (Eric Moorehead), Round Rock, TX; and cousins Charlotte Lukes, Downers Grove, IL, and Joseph Artabasy (Jane), Glencoe, IL. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association, phassociation.org.

Graveside funeral service will be at noon Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016, at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Aurora (entrance is located at South Lincoln Avenue and Simms Street), with Deacon Larry Motyka officiating.

The second youngest of 12 children and born to James and Garnetta Carrier on Aug. 25, 1962, family was her greatest blessing.

But her most favorite role of all was “Grammie” to her beloved grandson, JJ. Early in her adult life, Joan had a successful retail sales career in the Chicago area. She relocated from her hometown of DeKalb, IL, to Florida in 1991, and she touched the hearts of all who knew her with her laugh, quick wit and infectious smile. Fiercely loyal, she loved completely no matter what color, creed or family connection.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three of her brothers;Tommy, Jerry and Danny Carrier.

DeKALB – Some Northern Illinois University and Kishwaukee College students started the new academic year off facing an issue carried over from last school year, the state isn’t funding Monetary Award Program grants.

NIU is again fronting awards for 4,105 of its low-income students who were awarded MAP grants for 2016-17. The amount comes to about $8.2 million for the school. Last year, the school did the same thing and was not reimbursed by the state until July.

“For many of our students, MAP grants are essential to pursuing the degree that will help ensure their success after they graduate from NIU,” university President Doug Baker said. “For that reason, we are committed to crediting that money to student accounts.”

The Illinois Student Assistance Commission administers MAP, which helps students from low-income families pay college tuition expenses. Funding for the program halted last summer after the state failed to have a budget in place to cover from July 1, 2015, to June 30.

After a stopgap budget was adopted this past June, in time to keep the state from going into a second consecutive budget year without a spending plan, MAP funds were approved and disbursed to public colleges and universities.

ISAC spokeswoman Lynne Baker said the interim budget funded all of the 2015-16 MAP awards. It remains to be seen, she said, when or if money for this school year will be approved and checks cut to schools.

“At this juncture, however, we will not know how much will be appropriated for MAP for fiscal 2017 until the General Assembly reconvenes after Nov. 15 to begin work on a complete fiscal 2017 budget,” Baker said. “As with last fall, this continues to leave students and schools with a level of uncertainty about when MAP will be funded for the 2016-17 school year.”

Kishwaukee College also is doing a repeat of last year. About 346 of its students this school year have been awarded a state grant, according to college spokeswoman Kayte Hamel. She said students would have to get on a payment plan or find another way to cover the MAP award.

2-time DUI offender sentenced to work release fails to report

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Prosecutors are seeking to revoke the probation of a South Elgin man twice convicted of drunken-driving offenses, including a 2010 crash that injured a Hampshire couple, for failing to report to jail.

Eric M. Barth, 26, of the 1300 block of Sandhurst Lane, South Elgin, was convicted of aggravated driving while license revoked earlier this year. In July, Judge Philip Montgomery sentenced Barth to 180 days of jail with work release, 24 months of probation and ordered him to undergo an alcohol treatment evaluation. Barth was also ordered to obtain a Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitoring device to ensure he did not drink.

Prosecutors filed a petition to revoke his probation Aug. 31. In the motion, Assistant State’s Attorney Carrie Thompson said Barth had failed to obtain an alcohol treatment evaluation, failed to provide the court with a copy of his work schedule so he could begin the work-release sentence, failed to report to probation as required and that he was not being monitored by an alcohol monitoring

device as ordered by the court.

A warrant was issued for Barth’s arrest, according to court documents.

Barth had initially been charged with aggravated driving under the influence, aggravated driving with a suspended or revoked license, driving with a suspended or revoked license and driving on a suspended license after a 2015 traffic stop in Sycamore.

After a bench trial in March and April, Judge Philip Montgomery acquitted Barth of the drunken-driving charges after finding prosecutors failed to prove their case. However, Montgomery found Barth guilty of aggravated driving with a revoked license.

A Sycamore police officer arrested Barth on March 24, 2015, after he saw the truck he was in hit the fog line after a trip through the drive-thru at McDonald’s. The officer watched as Barth drove behind the closed Charter Fitness facility at 720 Foxpointe Drive. The officer found Barth, who appeared intoxicated, lying across the driver seat in an apparent attempt to hide, according to court documents. Barth refused to take field sobriety tests and, later at the police department, refused all chemical tests, according to court records.

SYCAMORE – A Sycamore man faces felony drug charges after a police search of his home turned up marijuana, psychedelic mushrooms and equipment for making hash oil, a concentrated form of marijuana.

Jeremy M. Adams, 32, of the 300 block of East Ottawa Street, Sycamore, was charged with unlawful use of cannabis-based product manufacturing equipment, possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana. If convicted of unlawful use of cannabis-based product manufacturing equipment, he could face three to seven years in prison.

Sycamore police officers arrested Adams on Wednesday after finding 44.1 grams of marijuana, 3.7 grams of psilocybin mushrooms and equipment for making hash oil, according to court documents. Sycamore police made contact with Adams and a woman he was living with Wednesday after receiving complaints about drug activity. Officers said that when they met with the woman, they saw Adams “concealing

drug paraphernalia.” Police then obtained a warrant to search the home.

In addition to the drugs, police found “several articles of butane hash oil manufacturing equipment, including butane and presses full of compressed” marijuana, according to court records.

A provision recently added to the Cannabis Control Act made possession of hash oil manufacturing equipment a Class 2 felony. The amended law also decriminalized possession of small amounts of marijuana.

After being read his rights, Adams told police the contraband was his, but denied making hash oil. The woman told police that Adams has made hash oil several times in the past, according to court records.

Judge Philip Montgomery ordered Adams be released on his own recognizance, noting that most of prior criminal history was more than a decade old.

Assistant State’s Attorney Howard Oestry had asked that bond be set at $7,500, citing a pending felony charge that Adams was a child sex offender who violated the law by going to see his child at a day care center.

Strike threat looms over Chicago schools

The district’s $5.4 billion budget relies on increased property taxes, borrowing and $215 million in state money contingent on a statewide pension overhaul. However, Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democrats running the Legislature are locked in an unprecedented battle over a full budget, which has overshadowed other issues at the Capitol. A stopgap spending plan allowing schools to open on time expires in January.

CHICAGO – A man convicted of one of the Chicago area’s most infamous crimes is seeking a court hearing to review newly discovered evidence, saying a key prosecution witness allegedly lied to get a reward worth tens of thousands of dollars.

James Degorski was convicted in 2009 for killing seven workers in 1993 at a Brown’s Chicken restaurant in Palatine, the Chicago Tribune reported. The 44-year-old is serving a life sentence at Menard Correctional Center in southern Illinois.

A petition filed on behalf of Degorski said the witness, Anne Lockett, is “a troubled woman, prone to dishonesty.” It also alleges she had implicated another former boyfriend as well as Degorski during the incident.

U of Illinois president receives $100,000 bonus

URBANA – University of Illinois President Timothy Killeen will be paid a $100,000 performance bonus for his first year on the job.

University trustees voted at their regular meeting Thursday to award Killeen the bonus.

Under his contract, the bonus was the maximum Killeen could have received for reaching performance goals. His salary is $600,000 per year.

Killeen leads the university system and its campuses in Urbana-Champaign, Chicago and Springfield. He finished his first year on the job in May. The university has increased enrollment on all three campuses during that period. Killeen also pushed for tuition freezes that trustees

Prosecutor in high-profile Chicago trials leaving

CHICAGO – A federal prosecutor who played central roles in several high-profile fraud and corruption trials in Chicago is leaving to start her own law firm.

The U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago announced Julie B. Porter’s departure Wednesday after her 12 years in one of the nation’s busiest judicial districts.

Porter participated in investigations that led to corruption convictions of former Gov. Rod Blagojevich. And she was among the prosecutors who secured guilty verdicts in the fraud trial of Conrad Black, a media mogul whose empire included the Chicago Sun-Times.

She also helped convict a well-connected businessman dubbed Illinois’ King of Clout, William Cellini. During trial closings, Porter played a wiretap record-

2 brothers get prison for holdups, wore Bulls caps

DALLAS – Authorities said two Dallas brothers who wore Bulls caps while committing several armed robberies are going to prison for dozens of years.

Prosecutors in Dallas said 27-year-old Cedric Ray Jones and 31-year-old Damien Antoine Jones in 2015 pleaded guilty to multiple counts related to robbery and weapons violations. The charges, filed after several business holdups in 2014, included interference with commerce by robbery.

Cedric Jones on Wednesday was sentenced to nearly 48 years in federal prison. Damien Jones received a 59-year prison term.

Investigators dubbed the robbers the “Bulls Cap Bandits” because the suspects wore caps associated with the NBA team.

Throughout his White House campaign, Trump has repeatedly defied the conventional rules of politics, winning his party’s nomination despite a history of corporate bankruptcies and lawsuits that would have sunk a more traditional candidate. With impunity, he repeats statements debunked by fact checkers.

At the forum, he said the best way to address sexual assault inside the armed services would be to “set up a court system within the military” – something that has existed since the Revolutionary War. Meanwhile, Clinton’s campaign this week published a 250-page book detailing her various policy plans.

Trump has refused to release his tax returns, while she’s disclosed decades of filings.

And while she’s apologized for a long list of past policy ideas and personal choices, including her use of a private email account while serving as secretary of state, he’s acknowledged just once that there are statements “I do regret.” He’s never specified what, exactly, he was sorry about.

Clinton’s campaign acknowledges that some of her liabilities stem from self-imposed errors, including her difficulty explaining the decision to install a private email server in her New York home.

Republican opponents have no shortage of examples which they say demonstrate that it’s Clinton who expects deferential treatment. Even some Clin-

ton supporters will admit that she has mishandled – and often completely avoided – questions about her email and her family’s charitable foundation, fueling scrutiny of both.

But they also believe her missteps have been given far more weight than those of Trump.

“He’s displayed a reckless level of ignorance and intolerance and that needs to be called out,” Clinton campaign spokesman Brian Fallon said.

“He should be held to the same standard of truthfulness of his statements.”

As part of their effort, Clinton and her team have begun tip-toeing into a topic they’ve often tried to avoid: sexism.

After Wednesday’s forum ended, Reince Priebus, the chairman of the Republican National Committee, tweeted a critique of Clinton’s performance as “angry + defensive the entire time – no smile and uncomfortable.”

Obama’s outreach to Asia a work in progress The ASSOCIATED PRESS VIENTIANE, Laos – President Barack Obama’s final trip across the Pacific this week wasn’t just a valedictory tour through Asia. It was a tour through the good, the bad and the ugly of his Asia policy.

As Obama hopped from summit to summit in China and Laos, the geopolitical forces and characters that have confounded his attempt to reshape American influence in the region arose for parting shots. China flexed its muscle, North Korea reared its head, Washington politics piped up from afar, even the Middle East – a perpetual distraction for Obama – briefly stole the spotlight.

Obama’s successes also had their turn. The president celebrated progress in his long fight against climate change. He reset relations with an erstwhile war enemy. He used the power of his personal story to connect with Asia’s rising generation.

And so, as he moved from tarmac

to pagoda, from crowded summit dinners to a quiet Buddhist temple, Obama confronted his legacy: He will leave unfinished his effort to shift U.S. diplomatic and military attention and military spending from the Middle East to a rising Asia. But he has set a course for his successor – should he or she chose to follow it.

“Many American presidents in the past have said, ‘Oh, Asia is the future.’

With the pivot, Obama said, ‘Asia is not just the future, it is now,’” said Victor Cha, President George W. Bush’s former Asia adviser. “It set a bar that other presidents will either try to meet, or not. And that would be noticed.”

Democrat Hillary Clinton is largely viewed as backing Obama’s approach.

Republican Donald Trump has sharply criticized Obama as being weak in his negotiations with the Chinese.

Obama on Thursday shot back: “I don’t think the guy is qualified to be president of the United States. And every time he speaks, that opinion is confirmed.”

NIU enrollment news not as bad as it could have been

The 10th day enrollment figures released this week by Northern Illinois University weren’t good, but they could have been worse.

NIU’s 5.5 percent year-over-year enrollment decline was the greatest percentage decline in records going back to 1980, but at schools including Western Illinois (down 7 percent) and Southern Illinois (down 7.5 percent) it was even worse.

In the most recent recruiting season, Illinois’ public universities faced some serious “headwinds,” as they might say at the College of Business.

It was a year in which public universities received no state aid for months and some university officials (although not at NIU) talked openly of the prospect of closing their doors.

Perhaps it should be no surprise then that incoming freshman enrollment at NIU fell a whopping 20 percent this year, with the class of 2020 more than 450 students smaller than last year’s. Or that graduate school enrollment also fell by more than 170 students.

There is a sense that, if the state of Illinois could just get its act together, a lot of these problems would take care of themselves.

But this year’s numbers aren’t a one-off. They’re part of a years-long trend.

This was the seventh consecutive year of enrollment declines at NIU. Enrollment has fallen in nine of the past 10 years; the lone exception was 2009, when enrollment grew 0.1 percent. Total enrollment at NIU in fall 2007 was 25,254, almost 25 percent greater than this fall.

Meanwhile, costs for students have continued to grow. Illinois residents in this year’s small freshman class will pay 76 percent more per year than those who entered school in 2007 when including room and board, student health insurance and other fees. (Health insurance, which saw a cost jump this year, can be declined.) The total cost for a full-time student for a full year is $24,980, according to estimates from NIU’s Office of the Bursar.

Some say that the state of Illinois is partly to blame for these increasing costs as well, citing regulations such as procurement rules and a truth-in-tuition law that keeps a student’s tuition cost the same for their freshman through senior year, forcing incoming students to shoulder a disproportionate share of cost increases.

The state is not solely to blame for the decreasing enrollment, however – some state schools are growing their enrollment. The University of Illinois saw 1.8 percent enrollment growth, with its largest freshman class. Illinois State University saw 1.1 percent enrollment growth this year.

Our community, and in fact all of Northern Illinois, has a stake in the fortunes of NIU. According to a study released in December by the university’s Center for Governmental Studies, student spending, university operations and construction activity generate about $895 million in economic impact to Northern Illinois, which includes 17 counties.

NIU is DeKalb County’s largest employer, and 58 percent of its total payroll goes to DeKalb County residents.

Already, Illinois is the Midwest’s greatest exporter of college students, and once they earn degrees in Wisconsin, Missouri, Michigan or Indiana, they’re just as likely to start careers there as to return here.

Finding ways to reverse this trend should be a priority for legislators, local leaders and average residents.

It’s time to finally stop the bleeding

Children across the state have started the new school year. This year, they will have an advantage that has eluded students and educators for the past seven years, full funding from the state.

Put another way, every single school district is getting more money than they did for the previous year.

This was an important step we were able to achieve with the help and push of Gov. Bruce Rauner. This was part of a stopgap budget that has supplied critical funds to keep some of our most important programs operating, but this is by no means enough.

Our colleges and universities still don’t have their full funding, and we’ve already seen a devastating impact on many of our human service providers.

In addition, our current bill backlog is now more than $8 billion.

This has been described by many as the result of a conflict between our governor and the Speaker of the Illinois House, Michael Madigan, D-Chicago.

The problem really began compounding in 2000, when then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich, and later Pat Quinn, allowed government to spend more than it was taking in through unbalanced budgets and by skipping major bills such as pension payments. At the same time, Speaker Madigan and his allies in Chicago pushed our state government to grow out of control, exacerbating the budget imbalances.

Now we have a governor who has said enough is enough. He wants to actually address the long-term structural issues plaguing Illinois before it is too late. I know what you’re thinking – that idea sounds far too logical for

state government. And it seems to be the case, as the Chicago leaders have fought every attempt at reform. They would rather just raise taxes again and keep spending more than we take in.

There are plenty of people that agree with this approach.

The problem is that the status quo has been killing jobs for far too long.

The anti-jobs stance of Illinois government has caused businesses to move out, expand in other states, or simply never come to Illinois.

According to a recent study, our state has lost 304,000 manufacturing jobs in the past 16 years. Part of that was caused by the global economic downturn, but Illinois still isn’t rebounding years later. Michigan added 171,000 jobs in the past seven years, and even Wisconsin, which is not a real manufacturing powerhouse like Illinois has historically been, managed to add 44,000. Illinois grew a mere 4,600 in the same time.

This is the reality of the status quo here at home. We can’t afford to keep sending hundreds of thousands of our residents to the unemployment line.

This is what this battle is about.

I am very proud of the historic funding levels we were able to bring our schools this year. But the entire stopgap budget was nothing more than a small first step. The Illinois Legislature will be back in session this fall. We need members of both parties to return ready to work on the types of compromise that can bring real reforms and progress.

The reidents of our state deserve more than they have been getting.

They deserve action.

In tribute to Phyllis Schlafly’s unintended inspiration Phyllis Schlafly founded her conservative Eagle Forum the year I graduated from high school, in 1975.

So I can’t summon a renewed sense of outrage after her death this week, at age 92. As much as I loathed Schlafly’s politics, I have to acknowledge her impact at a crucial time in my development. I aspired to be like Gloria Steinem, but Schlafly was a potent motivator, too – a reminder of what I was trying to escape.

Sometimes those furtive glances over one’s shoulder are a great incentive to keep moving.

Schlafly is most famous for successfully derailing the Equal Rights Amendment, mostly by casting the women who supported it as man-hating traitors. She was infamous for building a career as a public speaker and writer while admonishing other women to stay home.

“In the scale of liberal sins, hypocrisy is the greatest, and they have always considered me a hypocrite,” Schlafly told The New York Times’ Ginia Bellafante in 2006, insisting that she had never told women they shouldn’t work.

“I simply didn’t believe we needed a constitutional amendment to protect women’s rights. I knew of only one law that was discriminatory toward women,

In 1981, just as my generation of women was entering the workforce, Schlafly insisted that a “virtuous woman” is rarely the victim of sexual harassment. Soon enough, so many of us learned otherwise and were onto her, big time. This would be her undoing.

She could kill the ERA, but she would never prevail in stopping who we were destined to become.

Blinded by her bottomless need for attention, she eventually became irrelevant.

I do not celebrate her death, and I admit to discomfort as some fellow liberals dance on her grave. I am my mother’s daughter. Whenever I am tempted to let resentment darken my soul, I am stopped in my tracks by my mom’s longago question: Who do you want to be?

Phyllis Schlafly didn’t believe in women like me. On many a day as a young woman, knowing that about her was all I needed to keep going.

For that, and only that, I thank her.

The piano campaign was launched last spring with a concert by international concert pianist Jim Hendricks, who is a native son of the congregation. The fundraising continued with “piano patrons” who chose to donate a key for $500 or a half-key for $250.

The piano was purchased in a relatively short amount of time, because accompanist Craig Fritz and music director Bev Rauch discovered a gently used Blue Felt Kawai at Cordigan’s in West Chicago. (The Blue Felt version has won an award for excellence.)

The “piano patrons” will be listed in the bulletin, along with thanks to all who helped purchase the new instrument.

The celebration coincides with Rally Day for the church, and the first time the Adult Choir sings in the Sunday morning services this program year.

It also coincides with the 15th anniversary of 9/11.The piano dedication liturgy will include this quote by Leonard Bernstein: “This will be our response to violence – to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotionally than ever before.”

The statue, traveling the world since 1947, is on a two-year journey across the U.S. to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the apparitions at Fatima, visiting more than 100 dioceses in 50 states.

St. Mary Church is planning events to commemorate the Fatima apparitions. The goal of the Fatima Centennial U.S. Tour for Peace is to bring the message of Fatima – the Peace Plan from Heaven – to a world in need.

The International Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Fatima was sculpted in 1947 by José Thedim, upon the precise instructions of Sister Lucia. On Oct. 13, 1947, the statue was blessed by the Bishop of Fatima and commissioned to serve as the Pilgrim Virgin that would carry the blessings of Fatima throughout the world. The bishop prayed that Mary herself accompany the statue wherever it goes.

Sycamore’s Breidenbach attends Interlochen Arts Camp DAILY CHRONICLE Kjelden Breidenbach of Sycamore attended Interlochen Arts Camp, a summer arts program for aspiring artists.

Breidenbach, the son of Bob and Julie Breidenbach, studied cello and orchestral performance for seven weeks at the camp. As a member of the World Youth Symphony Orchestra, he

worked with many distinguished conductors such as Jung-Ho Pak and Carlos Kalmar.

Breidenbach is a junior at Sycamore High School. He studies Kjelden cello with Linc SmelsBreidenbach er and is a member of Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra and Sinfonia at Northern Illinois

University. He also is a member of the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Music Institute.

EYSO awarded Breidenbach the Robert Hanson Award for the 2015-16 season. In February, he was selected to participate in the Chicago Youth in Music Festival at Orchestra Hall in Chicago. Breidenbach is a member of the Chamber Orchestra at Sycamore High School, was named to the ILMEA

Orchestra, and was selected to the AllState Music Festival.

Interlochen attracts students, faculty and staff from all 50 states and more than 40 countries. These 2,500 artists fill Interlochen’s campus with an explosion of creativity. Student-artists learn from world-class instructors and produce hundreds of presentations in dance, theatre, creative writing, visual arts, music and film.

DeKalb defense looking for strong Week 3

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The DeKalb and Lake Park football teams have slightly more than passing familiarity with each other, having held joint practices in the offseason, according to Lancers coach Chris Roll.

Roll said it was an old friend who played matchmaker for the two programs.

Roll played defensive back at Indiana at the same time current Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey played on the offensive line. In the spring of 2014, Roll said he reached out to Carey, Eric Letterer and the Huskies coach in turn introduced him to DeKalb coach Matt Weckler.

“I’ve gotten to know Matt well the past couple years,” Roll said. “We’ve practiced each other at Northern, and we’ve been to a camp up there. I feel like the programs have been friends the past couple years.”

The two teams meet Friday in Roselle, with the defense of the Barbs (2-0) facing a spread offense for the first time this year when it faces the Lancers (1-1).

“We’re definitely going to have to tackle in space and do something we haven’t done yet in going against a spread team,” Weckler said.

The defense has been strong for the Barbs, allowing 205 yards and 12 points in Week 1 in a win over Moline, and 206 yards and 10 points in Week 2 against Carmel Catholic.

Linebacker Eric Letterer said going up an against an offense like their own in practice has helped solidfy the defensive unit.

“It’s mainly been our offense in practice helping us get better, helping us as a whole,” Letterer said of the DeKalb offense, which is averaging 253 yards and 39 points a game this year.

“Our D-line has been stepping up big, our linebackers have been stepping up, our corners have been stepping up.

We’re just all in sync.”

Last meeting: The teams last met in 2005 when both were members of the Upstate Eight. Lake Park won 28-20 in the closest meeting between the two teams since at least 1995. The Lancers dominated the series between 1996-2005, winning every year except 2003-04, when the teams did not play.

Scouting the Lancers: They are in the midst of a six-year playoff drought after a stretch of 11 berths between 1994 and 2009 – with nine of those coming in the first 10 years of that span.

Jacub Panasiuk (6-3, 235) has committed to Michigan State, and the senior defensive end had two sacks lats week, plus had a touchdown run of two yards. His older brother is already playing there. What’s at stake: A win will give the Barbs their second 3-0 start in three years. They haven’t trailed this year, and the games have been tied only at the start – for the first 2:34 in the opener against Moline and 2:21 at Carmel.

Lake Park coach Chris Roll said the Barbs are definitely clicking on all cylinders.

“We just feel like DeKalb is at this level now, with all their playoff success, that they just play smart, disciplined football every week,” Roll said. “They know what they want to do and how to do. We’re still trying to find ourselves ... We just need a consistent effort on both sides of the ball.

But right now we just lack experience and lack a little bit of confidence.”

The individual stats are a little short for the Barbs because of short fields and special team scores. Cole Tucker had both a kick return and a punt return for a touchdown last week, the first time a team has repeatedly kicked him the ball since the middle of last season. Jelante Young leads the Barbs with 227 yards on 30 carries and a score. Quarterback Derek Kyler hasn’t had to pass much this year, but is 14 for 20 with 229 yards and five touchdowns.

Weckler said the team is focused heading into Week 3 even with the fast start to the year.

“This is where we’ve been for the last couple years, so they realize to wins doesn’t get you anything,” Weckler said.

“We still have our goals and focus the same to get to win No. 5 to qualify for the playoffs. It’s nice being 2-0, it gets you closer to that five-win mark, but I don’t think our guys are satisfied.

Scouting the Panthers: Roosevelt has already made one trip to Illinois this year, losing 58-0 at Chicago Vocational. The Panthers have another trip coming up in two weeks when they face Champaign Central.

The 12 points last week in the school’s first-ever loss to La Lumiere was the most they’ve scored this year, and they’ve only scored 20 this season while giving up 106.

“We don’t have any film on them,” coach Joe Ryan said. “We got some film from last year but don’t know if they’re the same or not. It could have changed or not. It’s just one of those deals.”

They may not know much about the Panthers, but they’ll have an extra day to practice nonetheless with the Saturday kickoff.

“It’s nice to have that extra day to work,” Ryan said. “We still need to clean up and it’s nice to get that extra day at this point in the season.”

What’s at stake: The Spartans need to win to avoid an 0-3 start to the first time since 1999, en route to a 4-5 season out of the Suburban Prairie Conference White Division. Even with a win, their 1-2 start would be the worst for the program since 2007.

“No one’s happy with where we are, but we made strides in Week 2, and we’ve got to continue that,” Ryan said. “...The ironic thing is we’ve worked more on special teams, even in the summer, than in all my 29 years coaching football, and we still

haven’t performed well on special teams.

So hopefully we’ll improve upon that area.”

The Spartan offense picked up a little bit after its Week 1 showing at Sterling, a 38-6 loss. Chris Pawola ran for 99 yards on 16 carries, including a touchdown. Quarterback Ty Sulaver completed just nine of his 24 attempts, but threw for a score and ran for a second.

“I thought we ran the ball better and played better up front,” Ryan said. “We played a good front seven too so that was encouraging. ... We played better against a good team. It’s wasn’t a false good – we did some good things against a good team.”

Ryan said the defense, as it did in Week 1, struggled on third and fourth down.

“That’s been a point of emphasis that we have got to make those plays,” Ryan said.

“We haven’t yet this year but we’re making strong strides.”

Scouting the Olympians: The Olympians look to qualify for the playoffs for the second straight year – something they haven’t done since 2001-2002.

After starting the year with a 39-6 win over Stagg, they fell big to St. Rita.

The teams are meeting for the third year in a row, with the Olympians winning 14-13 in Olympia Fields in 2014.

Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly said the team looks a lot like it did last season.

What’s at stake: After four fumbles in the 48-20 win at Brooks in Week 1, Fedderly said the Knights focused on eliminating turnovers, and it worked. Kaneland had no turnovers in the win against Geneva.

“You’re always going to see a lot of improvement from the first week to the second week,” Fedderly said. “The kid worked really hard and hopefully they have that corrected.”

Jack Douglas had a big game, throwing for 183 yards and four touchdown passes, two to Matt Noel. For the season, Douglas has thrown for 424 yards and Noel has 148 catches – both lead the area in their respective categories. Josh Marcuzk has 12 catches, tops in the area, for 142 yards.

“Jack had a great game,” Fedderly said. “He was pretty efficient and well prepared. It’s going to give him that boost to take him to the next level if he can keep playing like that.”

GENOA-KINGSTON COGS AT ROCK FALLS ROCKETS Time: 7 p.m. Friday Records: Cogs 2-0 overall and Big Northern Conference, Rockets 2-0 overall and conference Last week: The Cogs beat North Boone 36-20. The Rockets beat Mendota 53-48 Last meeting: The Cogs won back in 2011, 32-12 at Rock Falls. It was their only win on the year, and the Rockets finished that season winless.

Scouting the Rockets: Both teams are going to be dramatically improved from their last meeting, when they combined to win one game in the 2011 season. This year, they’re both perfect and sitting atop the revamped Big Northern Conference – along with Dixon.

Rock Falls has made the playoffs twice in school history – 1985 and 1992. The coach of the 1992 squad, Rich Montgomery, is back at the helm of the squad.

The two wins this year for Rock Falls is more than the last three combined – 1-8 in 2013, winless the past two seasons – and one more win matches their 2012 total of three. That’s its highest since a five-win season in 2009, which in turn was their first winning season since the 1992 playoff berth.

Logan Pillars has thrown seven touchdowns this year without being picked off, competing 39 of 62 passes for 617 yards. A big chunk of those yards have gone to Roger Carlson (15 catches, 219 yards) and Michael Berentes (13-203). Each has three catches.

“I’m more comfortable in the offense in year two,” Pillars said. “Our guys can get in and out of routes quicker than last year, and our timing is better.”

What’s at stake: Considering its just the third game of the year, it will go along way to see what the Big Northern Conference will look like at the end of the year.

The Cogs have gone with two different identities in

the first two weeks this season, throwing the ball all over the field in a Week 1 win at Rockford Lutheran, then running the ball last week.

Junior Nate Shannon had a breakout game for the Cogs. After recording no stats in Week 1, he had 25 carries for 127 yards and three scores against North Boone. Dan Guardi added 112 yards on 12 carries but didn’t reach the end zone.

SOUTH BELOIT SOBOS AT HIAWATHA Time: 7 p.m. Friday Records: SoBos 0-2 overall and Northeastern Athletic Conference; Hawks 1-1 overall and conference Last week: The SoBos fell 57-6 at No. 2 Marquette. The Hawks crushed Midland 62-0 in Varna.

Last meeting: Both teams were a part of the Four Rivers Conference in it’s final season in 2005, with the Hawks, who finished 0-9, losing 48-6 to South Beloit, who finished the year 2-7.

Scouting the SoBos: It’s been a hard run since the team won a state title in 2002. They haven’t had a winning season since, bottoming out last year at 0-9 and have now gone without a win since October 10, 2014 – a 38-14 win at River Ridge. They’re 0-13 since.

The SoBos joined the NAC from the Northwest Upstate Illini Conference Northwest Division, which remained at nine team by adding Amboy.

“They’re new into the conference for us, and they played in a good conference before,” Hiawatha coach Jason Keneway said. “While their record shows 0-9 last year, they’re in a tough conference so it’s a little different. They’ve had some bad luck, too – they played two of the top teams in the conference one and two to start the season.

“We’re expecting a good game Friday,” he said.

“They’re going to come out of the gate hot, but we’ll come out hotter.”

South Beloit coach Jason Ware said it was a good measuring stick early in the season facing Marquette and Hope Academy, losing 45-20 to the Eagles.

“We feel like we know what we need to improve that we’ve played the supposed best,” Ware said. “Those are two great programs. Those two show you what your flaws and what we need to fix.

Keneway said the SoBos run a straight forward offense out of the Wing-T. Ware said running back Denny Passialis and quarterback Dillon Hagstrom will play a big part in the offense, but didn’t have season stats so far.

“If we have some good cues, some good read I expect the defense to have a good game,” Keneway said. “I’m an offense minded guy but I’m looking forward to see what the defense does Friday.”

What’s at stake: Hiawatha was rocked 55-0 to Marquette in Week 1, but bounced back in Week 2 behind a strong performance from Braden Watson, who scored three times and had more than 200 yards on the ground, bringing his season total to 228 yards on 21 carries.

Watson was pushed into the starting halfback role when Alex Barber was hurt on the first series in Week 1.

“Braden has done it all. He’s played wide receiver, running back, quarterback,” Keneway said. “And there’s no transition time, nothing. He hasn’t taken a rep at quarterback this year but I could put him in there and he’d do the job well. I’ll say it again – he’s the ultimate utility player.”

Ware said his team needs a strong game to come away with the win.

“They put up 62 points last week, so they must be good,” Ware said. “We just have to execute and have our young guys step up.”

Kaneland holds off G-K in 2 Indian Creek rallies in game

sports@daily-chronicle.com MAPLE PARK – Kaneland defended its home court successfully in a straight set volleyball victory over Genoa-Kingston, 25-21, 25-14, Thursday night.

Judging by the first set, the match between G-K (5-4-1) and Kaneland (11-3) appeared likely to go to a third set. The Cogs and the Knights traded points for the first half of that set, until Kaneland crept away as the teams closed in on the 20-point mark and ultimately resulted in the four-point victory.

“I think we came out kind of slow at first,” Kaneland coach Cynthia Violett said. “It’s hard when you’re playing against good competition like Genoa and it’s hard to keep that stamina going for a while. Obviously, the heat we had in this gym tonight doesn’t help, but I’m pleased with them.”

Kaneland looked to shift to a higher gear in the second set of the match.

Throughout the set, the Knights held sizable leads, including by as many as 12 points. The Cogs couldn’t string together any consistent scoring streaks to match the level that the Knights were playing at.

Missed hits and failed returns off Knight serves proved to be debilitating to the Cogs in their 11-point loss in the second set. Outside hitters Chloe Filipski and Jessica Weber both led the Knights with five kills each while Cameron Wyant earned two blocks.

“We didn’t play that well today and that’s all I can really say,” G-K coach Keith Foster said. “We had an uphill battle especially in that second game and we

Jeanette Brann led the way with the Cogs with six kills and six blocks.

At the beginning of the season, Violett was concerned with her team’s net defense, but so far this season her team has shown enough improvement in that area to alleviate that concern.

“I thought at the beginning of the year we would have trouble with our blocking,” Violett said. “We’ve really been working on that in practice lately and that’s been coming along for us. I noticed tonight we had some really nice blocks.”

HINCKLEY – The Indian Creek volleyball team rallied from an 1813 deficit in the second game to defeat the Hinckley-Big Rock Royals in straight sets, 25-20, 25-23.

The Timberwolves (4-4 overall, 1-0 Little 10 Conference) managed to stay cool under pressure, although they trailed most of the second game.

They went on a late run to tie the Royals at 23 when H-BR took its last timeout of the game.

Timberwolves coach Stephanie Crutcher said that her team practices for situations in which they trail.

“They don’t get nervous,” Crutcher said. “I think we were down by eight points at one point today and it didn’t faze them. When we do practice games, we play up to five, rather than 25. We break it down in to smaller games and that might be helping us mentally.”

Indian Creek got a huge boost on the attack from junior setter Katie Schilling. Shilling was dishing out assists left and right, totaling 15.

Shilling attributes the big night to experience with her hitters.

“You really have to know your hitters,” Shilling said. “After years of working with these girls, I know where they like to hit the ball and when they like to hit the ball. You just have to square up and connect

with your hitters. We spend about a quarter of our time doing hitting drills in practice.”

For the Royals (1-5, 0-1), there were positives that coach Joanne Weirich found in the loss.

“We started to get a little rattled at the end,” Weirich said. “However, I am very proud of how my team played. They played tough and they never gave up. Sometimes, we get a little bit bunched up, but that’s because I have been preaching awareness on the floor. Our communication is getting much better and we are learning who should be getting the ball in certain situations.”

Royals senior setter Julia Hanacek enabled a Hinckley-Big Rock attack that was able to open up a lead in the second game. Hanacek says that it all comes down to focus and drive later in games.

“A lot of the time, our game is situational,” Hanacek said. “I think it comes down to getting to the ball and making plays. Our practices are very consistent. We work on a lot of passing and getting that first pass up will really help us. We have to work hard and show that extra bit of desire in practice if we want this to be a great season. We all want to win.”

Indian Creek will host LaMoille Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. H-BR will host Newark at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday

Angel Escontrias finished his hat trick off with 1:12 left in the soccer match to give Kaneland a 4-3 win against Sycamore on Thursday.

The Knights scored the first two goals of the match – the first by Escontrias in the 29th minute on a penalty kicks, then Brian Bartholomew eight minutes later.

Sycamore got on the board with a minute left in the half, but Escontrias scored on another PK in the 48th minute.

But then the Spartans mounted their comeback, with a goal on a penalty kick in the 60th minute and the equalizer two minutes later.

Escontrias’ final goal in the 79th minute gave the Knights the win and pushed their record to 3-3-1 overall and 2-0-1 in

the Northern Illinois Big 12 East.

Barbs start fast to beat Morris: Leo Marquez scored in the second minute and DeKalb won, 3-0.

Tristan Bujarski added a pair of firsthalf goals for the Barbs (3-2-1 overall, 1-0 NIB 12 East).

Genoa-Kingston rolls past Sandwich: Oscar Pizano had three goals in the first half, including one 14 seconds into the match and two in the first 2 minutes, as the Cogs won 8-0.

Damen Tijerina scored twice, with Carson Riggs, Jesus Lara and Nick Uecker adding one each as the Cogs improved to 6-2 overall.

“We’ve had some slow starts this season, but tonight was not one of them,” Genoa-Kingston coach Randy Tate said.

“Our ball movement was good, but we really looked good in the air. At least

three goal were off headers. I was really pleased with the start of the game and the way we were combining on the field.”

There’s also a concern constant smartphone use adversely may affect a teen’s ability to learn. The most obvious basis for concern is simply from the distraction posed by smartphones. It’s hard to lay down new memories and learn new material when you are distracted.

A theoretical concern is constant multitasking by teens (whose brains still are not fully formed) adversely may affect their ability to focus and think deeply in the future. That is, some experts fear constant multitasking, particularly in the developing brain, may “re-wire” the brain in unhealthy ways.

Smartphones used under the covers after teens go to bed can cause inadequate sleep time and quality. This, in turn, can have an adverse impact on both mental and physical health.

And obviously, obsessively checking the smartphone at times when full attention must be directed elsewhere – while driving or crossing the street, for example – is a great threat to health.

The bottom line is these devices need to be used thoughtfully. Talk about this issue as a family and make some ground rules.

Dear Dr. K: My teenage daughter jokingly said she’s “addicted” to her smartphone.

I didn’t find her remark funny because there’s too much truth to what she said. Do I have a valid cause for concern?

Dear Reader: Real addiction – such as to narcotics – causes changes in brain chemistry. I’m not aware such changes have been shown for smartphones. But regular users of smartphones (of any age) surely can become very dependent on their phones – and very anxious when they are not able to use their phones for even a few hours.

Since your question is about your teenager, I turned to my colleague Dr. Claire McCarthy, assistant professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. We discussed a report recently released by Common Sense Media, based on a survey it did on 620 parent-child pairs. The organization reported: • 50 percent of teens feel they are addicted to their mobile devices; • 59 percent of parents think their teens are addicted to their mobile devices; • 66 percent of parents feel their teens spend too much time on their mobile devices – and 52 percent of the teens agree with them.

This is pretty powerful. Parents and teens agree their devices have a hold on them. That doesn’t mean constantly checking Instagram is the same as having a drug addiction. But there is real cause for concern.

Why? Because smartphones compete for our time and attention and constantly distract us. We have only so much time, and can be only partly attentive when we are multitasking. When you pay less attention, there can be consequences.

For teens, these consequences may affect social relationships. It’s hard to build or maintain them, and to hone social skills, when you are on your phone. It’s true smartphones allow teens to “meet” many

I emailed the mother asking if I had offended her, or if her daughter no longer wanted to be friends anymore. Mandy’s mom indicated there was no offense; they just have been super-busy.

Clearly, I can’t force the woman to be more responsive, but how should I handle this? And what should I tell my daughter, who misses her friend so much? – Not That Far Away Dear Not That Far: Not knowing Mandy’s mother, I can’t render an opinion about whether she’s leveling with you about her schedule.

She may be super-busy, experiencing family or health problems or simply not want to drive her daughter 10 miles for a play date. As I see it, you have no choice other than to let her know Mandy is always welcome.

Tell your daughter what her mother told you – she’s extremely busy, and you are sorry it has limited the time she gets to spend with her friend. At the same time, make a point of getting your daughter involved in new activities, so she can meet other girls and develop new interests.

P.S. Have you offered to take your daughter to Mandy’s house so her mother won’t have to do all the driving?

Dear Abby: My husband of seven years has always placed Wife No. 1 (I’m his second) on a pedestal. He often calls her to drive him to doctors’ appointments, take care of his finances – he even puts some of our bills in her name.

He also talks to her about our marital problems and what we do in the bedroom.

I’m the mother of his children, and I have always stood by him. I even made an extra effort to befriend the ex, only to find out she used it to her advantage to get more buried into our personal lives.

South pushed himself into seven spades. After West led the heart queen, what did declarer do?

I agree with North’s three-club response, which immediately hinted at a slam. When North raised to four spades, South might have started to control-bid, but opted for two doses of Blackwood. His last bid was a gamble because if North had the club ace and king, South could have had an unavoidable diamond loser. Still, he anticipated that the grand slam would be at worst on a finesse, which made it a reasonable bet.

Declarer realized that he would make the contract if either the clubs broke 4-4 or the diamond finesse worked. So, after trick one, South carefully overtook his spade seven with dummy’s eight, ruffed a low club with his spade jack, led the spade nine to dummy’s 10, ruffed another club high, played the carefully conserved spade two to dummy’s three, and pitched his low diamonds on the club ace-king.

When the clubs proved to be 4-4, declarer discarded his diamond queen on the club six and claimed.

But if the clubs had been 5-3, the diamond finesse was still available. The chance of success was an acceptable 66.35 percent.
