Fall enrollment down 5.5 percent at NIU; freshman enrollment drops 20 percent

eolson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – With official enrollment for the fall semester showing a decline of more than 5 percent – the largest percentage drop in more than three decades – Northern Illinois University President Doug Baker vowed Wednesday to put the school back on a path to growth.

Total enrollment was counted at 19,015 on the 10th day of classes this year, down 5.5 percent from fall 2015, according to data released by university officials.

“Our largest decline is in the freshman class, while smaller declines took place among transfer and graduate students,” Baker said Wednesday in a letter sent to faculty and staff. “We are clearly not where we need to be.”

Total undergraduate enrollment declined to 14,079, down 6.2 percent from 2015, according to data provided

by NIU. Graduate school enrollment fell 3.7 percent to 4,672. Enrollment at the law school increased 4.3 percent to 264.

“Certainly we continue to face challenges that all Illinois higher education institutions confront,” Baker wrote, “most notably Illinois’ continued population decline and the state’s continued and persistent status as the nation’s second-largest exporter of high school students to other states for higher education.

“These are ongoing trends, which means we need to focus on increasing our market share of those students who remain here in the state.”

NIU was not the only Illinois public university to report a steep drop in enrollment this fall. Western Illinois University in Macomb reported enrollment was down 7 percent to 10,373; Southern Illinois University, with its main campus in Carbondale, saw enrollment fall 7.5 percent to 15,987.

At Illinois State University in Normal, enrollment increased 1.1 percent to 21,039. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is set to release its enrollment figures today. Eastern Illinois University in Charleston also had yet to release its enrollment count.

This is the sixth consecutive year that enrollment has declined at NIU, which had an enrollment of 25,313 in fall 2006 and once had a goal of reaching 30,000 enrollment by fall 2020.

“Our high school guidance counselors saw what was happening in the state, and the headlines about universities not sure if they could open this fall, and they were advising students to go to out-of-state schools,” Pritchard said.

At NIU, where administrators including Baker emphasized the school

was in no danger of closing, this year’s incoming freshman class shrunk 20.2 percent from last year, dropping to 1,802, according to data provided by the school.

It was April before public colleges and universities received any state funding for the past school year, with NIU receiving $26 million – less than half the $63 million it had budgeted.

Lawmakers approved a six-month “stopgap” budget beginning July 1, which appropriated $1 billion for state universities.

NIU received $48.3 million in general aid, along with $15.5 million to complete the ongoing renovation to the Stevens Building and a portion of the statewide total for the Monetary Assistance Program for low-income students.

DeKalb seeks feedback for STEAM learning center

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Local governments and nonprofits are teaming up with Northern Illinois University to explore a collaboration that could lead to the construction of a state-of-theart science, technology, engineering, art and math learning center.

But first, organizers want to hear from the public through an online survey.

The city of DeKalb is in the process of studying the potential and strategy for a collaboration with Northern Illinois University’s Center for P-20 Engagement, Proudly DeKalb Inc. and the DeKalb Firefighters Historical Foundation that would provide DeKalb with a community learning center, according to a news release.

The project team wants to build a learning center that will be a destination designed to bring visitors to DeKalb.

“The STEAM Learning Center is an exciting project for the community and aligns with many of the vision statements and goals of the DeKalb 2025 Strategic Plan,” Mayor John Rey said in a news release. “The project team is very interested in hearing from the community about their thoughts for the learning center and encourages all interested parties to complete the survey.”

The project team wants to better understanding the needs of the community via a survey.

The survey is available on the city’s website at http://bit.ly/2bQF4ps.

The survey will be available until Sept. 23.

Two charged with pointing gun at people during altercation

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Two brothers face felony charges for allegedly pointing guns at several people, including a 2-yearold, during an altercation in DeKalb early Tuesday morning.

Wykeem J. Pickens, 25, of the 800 block of Edgebrook Drive, DeKalb, and Willie Pickens, 29, who also had been staying in DeKalb, are both charged with unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, Wykeem J. according to court doc- Pickens uments. If convicted of 25, DeKalb the most serious charge, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, a Class 3 felony, the men each could face two to five years in prison.

Witnesses told police that one or both of the men, along with a third suspect, were involved in an incident where they pointed handguns at people during at altercation shortly before 2 a.m. Tuesday in the 800 block of Russell Road.

Police were called to the area after receiving a report that three people were pointing guns. Officers arrived as the suspects were running away.

Witnesses told police that the suspects were running and a witness was running after them, according to court records.

DeKalb police officers arrested Wil-

lie Pickens and Wykeem Pickens near the scene of the altercation. One witness told police that Wykeem Pickens had a gun and was pointing it toward several people, including a 2-year-old.

Another witness said both brothers had guns and were pointing them.

That witness chased the third suspect and recovered a vest he had been wearing along with a silver Ruger handgun, according to court records.

He told police that the brothers gave the guns to the third suspect as police arrived at the scene.

Willie The gun that was Pickens recovered was loaded with five rounds of am29, DeKalb munition, according to court records.

The nature of the altercation wasn’t described in the court records.

Both brothers told police that they had been at the scene, but denied having guns, according to court records.

Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert set Willie Pickens’ bond at $60,000 and Wykeem Pickens’ bond at $25,000 during a hearing Wednesday afternoon. DeKalb County Public Defender Tom McCulloch told the judge that Wykeem Pickens had more ties to the community and was considered to be at less of a risk to commit a crime if released.

Both men remained at the DeKalb County Jail as of Wednesday afternoon.

DeKALB – 3M’s Community Support Group is hosting a golf outing to benefit Family Service Agency of DeKalb County, a nonprofit organization that operates the Children’s Advocacy Center, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Center for Counseling and Senior Services.

The 3M group will host Swing for FSA on Saturday at Sycamore Golf Club.

The first tee-off will be at 9 a.m. It is open to the public, according to a news release.

It will be the Community Support Group’s third year hosting the charity event and its first time supporting Family Service Agency of DeKalb County.

“I’m hoping we can get policymakers to really start looking at the quality of our workforce and skill developers. The workforce has always been one of the attractors to Illinois,” Pritchard said. “… Clearly we’ve got to get state leaders focused on this issue. I’ve been talking about this for some years, but we’ve got lots of priorities in this state, and it just hasn’t resonated with the people that are making the decisions and signing off on what the budget proposals are going to be.”

Students’ cost rising

The cost to attend NIU also has continued to grow at a brisk clip, data shows. Since the start of the Great Recession in 2007, annual in-state tuition has increased 70 percent to $9,466 for this year’s freshman class, according to data from the Bursar.

The health plan, which is optional, saw about a $490 jump in annual cost for the school year, data shows.

Costs for upperclassmen are lower because of Illinois’ Truth-In-Tuition law, which requires tuition levels be the same for students in their freshman through senior years. Critics say the law forces incoming students to shoulder more of the load for budget shortfalls than their upperclass peers.

The percentage cost increase over a 10-year period was not out of line with historical trends. Data shows that in-state tuition at NIU increased 78 percent from 1997 to 2006, and the total cost increased 73 percent.

But enrollment grew by more than 3,000 students from 1997 to 2006, reaching a recent high-water mark of 25,313 in 2006.

University officials have tried to stem rising costs by not charging students more for credit hours they take beyond 12, and trying to keep a lid on other fees, Baker said.

Bright spots

Baker pointed to enrollment growth at the university’s law school, which welcomed 11 new students, as well as gains in student retention among the bright spots in the data.

In his letter, Baker noted there had been “major gains in several graduate and undergraduate engineering programs, undergraduates in computer science, and graduate programs in our nationally ranked Master of Public Administration program, College of Education and English.”

Baker said that student retention was at its highest level since 2009.

In terms of prospects for attracting future students to the school, Baker pointed to the restarting of the Stevens Building renovation, which was halted for more than a year for lack of state funding.

Architectural plans for a renovation of the Holmes Student Center also are in the works, Baker wrote, and these developments will help to revitalize the campus.

“Again, the challenges remain – and some efforts will yield results sooner than others,” Baker wrote.

“But we are working aggressively on a variety of fronts to get back to where we need to be.

“When we focus on an issue, as we have with retention, we know that great things can happen.”

The comic character has remained popular since the 1950s because of television reruns. has a donkey. I can’t find any numbers or markings on them and I am wondering if you can tell me when they were made and what they might be worth.

A: Light bulbs with glowing figural objects inside were first made in the 1930s. They were invented by Philip Kayatt, founder and president of Aerolux Light Corp. of New York City, who patented the first novelty filament glow light in 1935. From 1938 until the early 1970s, Aerolux made gas-discharge light bulbs with small figures in the bulbs.

Called “cheer lights,” the low-wattage bulbs could be used in standard electric lamps. When the lamps were turned on, the figures glowed orange, pink, green or purple. The filaments were made in various shapes, including animals, flowers, comic characters, zodiac signs and the Trylon and Perisphere from the 1939 New York World’s Fair. Dogs were made from about 1938, and donkeys were made between 1940 and 1950. Other companies made similar bulbs. The value of glow bulbs can go from $15 to $65. *** Q: I found an old post office box door in a box of things that were in my uncle’s barn. It looks like it’s bronze. The door has an eagle holding a bunch of arrows above a glass window. There is a combination lock dial above the eagle. Is this collectible?

A: There are collectors interested in old post office box doors. They have been made of bronze, gold-painted aluminum and other metals. The window is so the customer could see if there was any mail in the box. Doors with an eagle holding arrows that were first used in about 1906 are fairly common. Some old doors have been made into a box-shaped bank. The price of an old post office box door depends on the material, decorations, condition and rarity.

Many comic book, movie and TV heroes are so popular that they inspire hundreds of different collectibles. Often, interest in the characters dies about 25 years after the last new episode of their shows are shown. Some have continued to be popular because of TV reruns and their rebirth in new movies, comics or even plays. “Underdog” was one of the characters created in 1959 for television cartoons selling General Mills cereal. He formerly was Sunshine Boy, who went into a phone booth to take a pill that turned him into the super-powered Underdog. He always damaged the booth and spoke in rhymes. In 1969, the show lost its sponsor, but 62 shows continued in syndication. They can be seen on TV, and other syndicated shows with Underdog as the hero were edited, rewritten and re-bundled to remain on TV until the late 1990s. Many years on the air have helped “Underdog” collectibles remain popular and expensive. A 1974 child’s metal “Underdog” lunchbox and thermos sold at a Hakes.com auction in fall 2015 for $2,296.

Other undiscovered “Underdog” memorabilia still is waiting in garage sales and flea markets, usually without the history that gives it value. *** Q: I have an old blue leather rocking chair with horse-hair stuffing and fringe around the bottom. I was told it was my grandmother’s and that she brought it over from Germany.

The only marking on it is a round button on the back that I believe reads “Karpen Furniture.” Can you provide any information and maybe a value?

A: Your chair was made by S. Karpen & Bros. of Chicago, Ill. Solomon Karpen, along with his nine brothers, started the company in 1880, and by 1900, it was the largest manufacturer of upholstered furniture in the world. By 1927, Karpen had also built factories in Long Island City, N.Y., Michigan City, Indiana and Los Angeles, employing 1,800 workers. The company made an endless variety of chairs for every need, budget and decorating plan. As leather furniture became more popular, many different Karpen styles were made. Karpen was in business until 1952. Your chair is in very distressed condition and it would be very expensive to recover. Any value it has would be sentimental. *** Q: My sister was given a black Couroc serving tray with 37 presidential coins in it. The coin representing President Gerald R. Ford is in the center. It’s 18 by 12 1/2 inches. What can you tell me about it?

A: The Couroc Co. was founded in Monterey, California,

by Guthrie Courvoisier in 1948. The name is derived from the first four letters of his last name, “Cour,” with “oc” added to make it sound like “rock.” Most Couroc items were made of black resin and embedded with coins, wood, metal or objects from nature. Courvoisier died in 1963 and the company closed in the 1990s. The value of your tray is about $30. *** Q: More than 20 years ago, I purchased three electric light bulbs that are not just light bulbs. Authorities to build up presence at protest site

BISMARCK, N.D. – North Dakota authorities are recruiting law enforcement officers from across the state to guard the site of a protest in anticipation of an impending federal ruling on whether to block the construction of the four-state Dakota Access oil pipeline.

CHICAGO – A federal judge said current Illinois law that sets limits on how much political action committees can give candidates but allows political parties to give as much as they want is constitutional.

Wednesday’s ruling follows a two-day bench trial in a civil lawsuit brought by the conservative Illinois Liberty PAC. It argued that letting parties and their legislative leaders contribute as much as they want to candidates while limiting what PACs and individuals can contribute violates rights to free speech.

Earlier, the same judge in Chicago dismissed other claims in the lawsuit.

Baby delivered after mother shot in Chicago doing well

CHICAGO – A baby who was delivered after his mother was shot in the abdomen over the weekend in Chicago is doing well.

The baby was nearly full term when he was delivered shortly after Monday’s shooting in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.

The newborn’s grandfather, Tyler Thomas, told the Chicago Sun-Times on Tuesday evening that “the baby is doing good.”

A spokeswoman for Stroger Hospital said the mother and father, 23-year-old Crystal Myers and 24-year-old Albert Moore, were listed in critical condition Tuesday night. Moore was shot in the neck.

Pumpkin harvest in ‘good shape’ after 2015 shortage

MANITO – Illinois farmers said 2016 is shaping up to be a much better year for growing pumpkins.

The [Peoria] Journal-Star reported growing conditions have been favorable for the pumpkin crop, whether the pumpkins are being grown for consumption or carving for Halloween.

In 2015, heavy June rains drowned pumpkin vines around the state. That led to a dismal harvest and a shortage of processed pumpkin.

COLLINSVILLE – Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site in southwest Illinois is hosting two days of cultural presentations by Native Americans.

Native American artists, storytellers and dancers will display clothing, demonstrate crafts and discuss customs and beliefs Saturday and Sunday at the site’s Interpretive Center.

The event is sponsored by the American Indian Educational Resources of St. Louis.

Cahokia Mounds is eight miles from downtown St. Louis in Collinsville.

The site is home to the largest Native American earthworks north of Mexico. It was the location of a large city of thousands of residents from the Mississippian culture, which flourished 1,000 years ago in the Midwest and South.

Female WWII pilot has finally been laid to rest

ARLINGTON, Va. – After flying military planes during World War II, raising a family, visiting all seven continents and bungee-jumping in New Zealand at 83, Elaine Harmon had one final, seemingly simple wish: to be laid to rest at Arlington National

Cemetery.

Harmon got her wish Wednesday, at a funeral with military honors and a flyover, but it took a lobbying campaign by her family and an act of Congress.

In the process, the campaign helped bring to light the long-forgotten exploits of the fearless female pilots known as the WASPs. Harmon, who died last year at 95, was a member of Women Airforce Service Pilots, who flew military aircraft on support and training missions during World War II so that men were freed up for combat.

PHOENIX – Less intense remnants of Tropical Storm Newton brought rain, powerful winds and uncharacteristically high humidity to desert cities in Arizona on Wednesday after pummeling the Mexican resort city of Cabo San Lucas and killing four people.

About 2½ inches of rain fell in the border city of Nogales and nearly an inch in Tucson. In both cities, dozens of people picked up sandbags faster than they could be filled in anticipation of the storm. Trump: U.S. generals are ‘reduced to rubble’ The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – Leveling unusually harsh criticism against the military, Republican Donald Trump said Wednesday night that America’s generals have been “reduced to rubble” under President Barack Obama and suggested he would fire some of them if he wins the presidency in November.

Trump’s comments came during a televised national security forum where he and Democratic rival Hillary Clinton each fielded 30 minutes of questions about their experience and judgment to be commander in chief.

While the candidates never appeared on stage together, their back-to-back sessions served as a preview of sorts for their upcoming debates.

By virtue of a coin flip, Clinton took the stage first and quickly found herself responding at length to questions about her years in government. She reiterated that she had made mistakes in relying on a personal email account and private server as secretary of state and in voting for the 2003 invasion of Iraq as a senator. But she defended her support for U.S. military intervention to help oust a dictator in Libya, despite the chaotic aftermath.

“I’m asking to be judged on the totality of my record,” said Clinton, who grew visibly irritated at times with the repeated focus on her past actions.

She vowed to not send American ground troops into Iraq or Syria to fight the Islamic State group. Trump did little to counter the criticism that he lacks detailed policy proposals, particularly regarding the Islamic State. He both insisted he has a private blueprint for defeating the extremist group and that he would demand a plan from military leaders within 30 days of taking office.

Asked to square his request for military options with his harsh criticism of the current crop of generals, Trump said simply: “They’ll probably be different generals.”

Trump renewed his praise of Russian President Vladimir Putin for having “great control over his country.” He stood by a previous comment that appeared to blame military sexual assaults on men and women serving together, but added he would not seek to remove women from the military. And for the first time, he opened the door to granting legal status to people living in the U.S. illegally who join the military.

“I think that when you serve in the armed forces, that’s a very special situation,” Trump said. “And I

could see myself working that out.”

As a businessman with no substantial national security experience, Trump was vague about how he is preparing for the enormous array of complex issues that would land on his desk as commander in chief. He cited his team of military advisers, but also said he has “a common sense” that will help him make decisions on foreign policy.

With just two months until Election Day, national security has emerged as a centerpiece issue in the White House race. Both candidates believe they have the upper hand, with Clinton contrasting her experience with Trump’s unpredictability and the Republican arguing that Americans worried about their safety will be left with more of the same if they elect Obama’s former secretary of state.

While GOP candidates are often seen by voters as having an advantage on military and national security issues, Trump is far from a traditional Republican. He has no military experience and has repeatedly criticized the skill of the armed forces.

WASHINGTON – The House is moving toward a showdown vote this month over whether to impeach IRS chief John Koskinen. But with no chance the Senate would actually remove him from office, Republicans stood divided over the effort’s wisdom in the shadow of this fall’s presidential and congressional elections.

“It warrants that kind of action for the behavior the IRS and Mr. Koskinen used,” said Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, leader of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, whose members have pressed the effort.

The House has voted only 19 times to impeach federal officials: Two presidents, 15 federal judges, a senator and a Cabinet member. Only eight, all judges, have been convicted and removed from office by the Senate.

House GOP leaders have shown meager enthusiasm for impeaching Koskinen, and its prospects are uncertain.

DeKalb could have monitored power deal If you can’t ensure a contract is honored, why sign it?

That’s our question about the value of the electrical aggregation agreement approved by the DeKalb City Council in 2014, and any similar agreements the city might approve in the future.

Thousands of power customers in DeKalb have been overbilled since July 1 after the electrical supplier failed to honor terms of an agreement negotiated and approved by DeKalb city officials.

At least one citizen – Mark Charvat of DeKalb – pointed the billing problem out to city officials, which set in motion the process of getting the problem fixed.

Once the matter was brought to their attention, city and company officials worked quickly to resolve the problem within a matter of hours Tuesday.

Homefield Energy, a subsidiary of Houston-based Dynegy Inc., was supposed to reduce the rate that about 5,800 DeKalb customers were charged for electricity on July 1, but it didn’t.

A company spokesman said the rate change was not entered into its billing system; the company plans to make it up to customers by either issuing rebates or providing credits on upcoming bills.

Were it not for the vigilance of a couple of customers who remembered the terms of the original agreement passed in March 2014, and checked their power bills, this mistake on the part of the company could have gone unnoticed for the length of the agreement.

City officials, including Mayor John Rey and Public Works Director Tim Holdeman, said there was no way for the city to ensure that the supplier honored the agreement, and that it’s not the city’s affair because the power supply deal is essentially between the customer and the company.

Although the billing is between the company and customer, city officials made themselves part of the equation when they negotiated the deal on residents’ behalf. Those who did not actively “opt-out” of the agreement became party to the bargain by default.

If city officials are going to take on the responsibility for negotiating power agreements for thousands of families, they also bear some responsibility to enforce them.

After all, the people who negotiated and approved the agreement are far better positioned to know its terms and ensure compliance than a homeowner who was automatically included two years ago because they failed to opt out.

If it truly was impossible for city officials to ensure this contract was honored, they shouldn’t have agreed to it.

The main culprit here is the Dynegy subsidiary, Homefield, which had an obligation to customers and failed to honor it.

Would they have made the same mistake had the rate been scheduled to increase?

City officials could have enforced the agreement, however.

Surely, someone at City Hall lives in DeKalb and buys power from Homefield.

They could have checked that person’s bill to ensure the rate was reduced on schedule. Or they could have notified residents to check their bills themselves.

Like almost everyone else, they just didn’t think to do it.

To the Editor: Being alone does not necessarily mean you are lonely or unfriendly.

We all need to be alone from time to time.

Some early risers prefer predawn, or dawn, when the world is not upon us yet. Everyone has a clean slate with yesterday gone – except in our memory bank.

The peace and tranquility of early morning is missed by late sleepers. Birds chirping at the bird feeder, the cracking sound as they open sunflower seeds, these are sounds many city dwellers miss.

Rather than being alone, we sometimes desperately seek any kind of companionship and don’t find it. One such early morning, I looked up various sayings about being alone and found this one: “Better to live alone; with a fool there is no companionship.”

There are all sorts of lyrics to songs, poetry and quotes by famous people about preferring solitude, and it is not a vice to wish to be alone.

Even the most gregarious person seeks solitude now and then. It’s almost a luxury on our overcrowded planet.

And yet, I recall John Donnes’ poem “No man is an Island,” in which he wrote of how all people are connected to and dependent on other people, closing with the famous line, “And therefore never send to know for

whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee.”

Never more true than in our declining years. Old friends and devoted children are luxuries some are not privileged to enjoy.

At times we may attend a movie with empty seats all around us, and someone thoughtlessly intrudes on our space, sitting very close. Or maybe they sit next to us in a restaurant with room elsewhere. Perhaps they are lonely.

The animal world seeks companionship, too, as seen by elephants who travel in packs and our feathered friends, with a gaggle of geese in V-formation, the ones in back honking encouragement.

Alone time is good to gather our thoughts, shutting out the world. Sadly, solitude is often forced on us with the death of a spouse, so we must learn to adapt.

I ran across this meaningful definition of the difference between loneliness and solitude.

Loneliness is to express pain of being alone.

And solitude to express the glory of being alone.

Today, we can be in instant touch with anyone anywhere, or simply disconnect for a time to enjoy our solitude. Finding the right balance is the key.

But state sales tax rates aren’t calculated that way, and most people will get the wrong idea when they hear Johnson say he’s for a 28 percent tax, and when reporters repeat it. And many of the claims for the national sales tax are overblown. In a Republican presidential debate last year, Mike Huckabee promised that pimps, prostitutes and drug dealers would not be able to avoid sales taxes the way they avoid income taxes.

Maybe that would be true for the things they buy. But they’re unlikely to charge the sales tax to their customers, so the same transactions that go untaxed now would keep going untaxed.

Actually, the underground economy would almost certainly grow much larger as people try to avoid the new sales tax. European countries try to minimize this problem by relying on the value-added tax, levied at each stage of production, rather

than using retail sales taxes. (The VAT has other administrative advantages.) But even those countries have lower rates than Johnson is considering. The average VAT rate in the European Union is 22 percent. We should expect much more tax evasion under Johnson’s 39 percent tax.

Johnson treats the sales tax as a free lunch. Today’s taxes raise the price of everything, he says. He says that if you got rid of those taxes, a $1 can of Coke would cost 72 cents. Add 28 cents for his new tax, and you’re right back at a dollar.

“It’s actually, in theory, not going to add cost to products,” Johnson said. You may be wondering, then, who pays the tax? Good question.

The answer is that if the price of everything falls, that has to include the price of labor. So either prices rise and people pay the tax as consumers, or prices stay flat and they pay it as employees. The cost of the tax has to come from somewhere.

Senior citizens would be hit hard.

If prices go up because of the tax, then any of their savings that aren’t shielded from inflation will fall in value. Future retirees’ Social Security benefits would be lower, too, since those benefits are based on wages,

and the tax would reduce the value of those wages.

Johnson says that his 28/39 percent sales tax would raise as much money as the current tax code. If that’s right, then it has to sock the middle class: The poor mostly are protected by the prebate, and rich people come out ahead from the abolition of the progressive income tax.

His revenue projections are almost certainly too optimistic, however, because a rate that high would cause so much tax evasion.

The best feature of the sales tax is that it would remove the tax code’s bias against saving and investment, meaning we would get more of both.

But there are better ways to move in that direction. One would be to keep the income tax but exempt the return to savings from taxation.

That would pose problems of its own, of course. But it would avoid the serious administrative problems a national sales tax would involve.

And you wouldn’t have to amend the Constitution to get there.

Chinese government repression backfires once again in Hong Kong President Barack Obama has frequently predicted that the aggressive policies of Russia and China in places such as Ukraine and the South China Sea are destined to be self- defeating because of the blowback they generate.

It has been, at times, an all-too-convenient theory for a president reluctant to embrace robust counteraction by the U.S. But an election in Hong Kong last weekend provided strong evidence that, in the case of that quasi-autonomous Chinese territory, Beijing’s growing repression and nationalism under President Xi Jinping have backfired.

Two years ago, the Communist regime touched off mass protests in Hong Kong by refusing to allow fully democratic elections for the city’s chief executive. It then refused to compromise with students and other

pro-democracy activists who peacefully occupied major streets in the city for 79 days, and instead brought criminal charges against some of them. Since then, Beijing has further eroded the independence of Hong Kong media and universities and launched an extralegal campaign against a critical book publisher, abducting its principals and confining them in China.

The response of Hong Kong’s electorate was to turn out Sunday in record numbers to hand pro-democracy forces a decisive victory in elections for the Legislative Council. Most important, six candidates favoring consideration of independence from Beijing swept to victory.

None were older than 40, and several were leaders of the 2014 “Umbrella” protest movement. Because most of the council’s members are not chosen by popular election, the

opposition will not have a majority, and real power still lies with the pro-Beijing chief executive. Nevertheless, the opposition’s ability to frustrate legislation with vetoes and filibusters has been strengthened.

Moreover, the cause of Hong Kong independence – a direct response to Beijing’s past repression – has been legitimized for the first time. The regime tried to squelch that, too, requiring legislative candidates to sign pledges supporting Hong Kong’s incorporation in China and banning six who either refused to sign or were regarded as insincere.

A student-founded party called Demosisto, which calls for a referendum on Hong Kong’s future status, was denied a bank account and permission to distribute its election materials; two of its leaders were sentenced to community service last month for their actions in 2014.

No matter: One of them, 23-year-old Nathan Law, won election.

The rebuff confronts Xi with a dilemma: conciliate with the opposition, including those who still favor Chinese sovereignty over Hong Kong, or crack down still harder.

There is a deal to be made with the moderates, who seek only to compel China to fulfill its own promises about democracy in Hong Kong.

But the four-year record of the Xi regime strongly suggests it will double down on repression, especially on the new pro-independence crowd. That would risk engendering a still greater backlash: According to one recent poll, 40 percent of Hong Kong youths between ages 15 and 24 support eventual independence.

As Obama might observe, the arc of history in Hong Kong is not bending toward China’s Communists.

Gary Johnson, a former governor of New Mexico, is running for president as the Libertarian Party’s nominee to draw attention to his ideas.

One of those ideas is a 28 percent national sales tax to replace the federal income, payroll and corporate taxes. He would repeal the 16th Amendment, which authorized the income tax, to make his plan stick.

But the more attention his idea gets, the less attractive it will be.

Johnson is advancing a modified version of a proposal called the “FairTax.” That proposal addresses one obvious potential problem with a national sales tax by adding a “prebate” to it: a check from the government to all households that has the effect of exempting the poor from the new tax.

But the tax rate is higher than it appears to be. Let’s say Johnson’s tax ideas prevailed, and a Kindle sold for $139 – with $100 going to Amazon and $39 to the new federal sales tax.

Advocates of a national sales tax would say that’s a 28 percent tax rate, because 39 is 28 percent of 139. That method makes for a clean comparison to the income tax rates that the sales tax would replace. Income tax rates are “tax inclusive,” too, if you

After two years of being a reserve safety – including missing all of 2014 with a knee injury – the redshirt junior led the team in tackles and is increasingly becoming a leader of the Huskie defense.

“He did a lot of good things in the sense that he made a lot of tackles and was around the ball a lot,” Northern Illinois defensive coordinator Kevin Kane said. “He’s one of our leaders so he gets our guys up on the sideline.

There’s a lot of stuff he can get better at, too. Nobody was perfect on defense.

While he played well, there’s still stuff he can get better at.”

Detroit opened the 2016 season with 13 tackles – including eight solo. He didn’t have any interceptions – he had two last year as a backup – but he provided stability in the back of the defense.

However, despite the 13 tackles, which were a game-high, Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey said there’s still room for improvement for Allen.

“He played a real good game,” Carey said. “He got himself in some trouble a couple times, with some bad positioning and alignments pre-snap. I think Mycial played a really good game. I was really excited to see that. Unfor-

tunately, we needed him to play a little bit better, just like we all needed to. I was happy overall.”

In terms of first starts, there couldn’t have been a more unusual game for Allen to make his debut. The game was delayed nearly two hours and finished with a triple overtime 40-34 loss that ended at 2:34 a.m. MST. However, Allen said he was far from sleepy during the game.

“I was just feeding off the energy of my teammates and just flying around and making plays,” he said. “I was just really focused on playing, getting the calls and making the right checks.”

Kane expects a lot from his safeties – including Allen and the other starting safety, junior Brandon Mayes. When it comes to the NIU defense, which allowed 433 yards during regulation compared to the 418 per game it aver-

aged in 2015, the safeties are the end of the rope.

“A D-lineman can be out of his gap and a linebacker can make him right,” Kane said. “A linebacker can be out of his gap and a safety can make it right.

Nobody can make a safety right, so we put a lot of trust in those guys and when we recruit safeties here, it’s a big deal to see how smart they are and mentally and physically tough they are to make sure they can fit into what we do.”

As a first-year starter, Allen said that the role has changed now – he has younger players looking up to him.

Carey lauded him for the maturity he’s shown since last year – translating into the field and his ability to perform as one of the two “quarterbacks of the defense.”

However, when the Huskies travel to Tampa to face South Florida, he will face the true safety’s temptation – a running quarterback.

The Bulls feature 6-foot, 209-pound junior quarterback Quinton Flowers who has been a headache for defenses. Last season, he threw for 22 touchdowns and rushed for 991 yards and 12 touchdowns. In 2015, he ran for a conference record 201 yards against Southern Methodist University.

“We just stay back until we know for sure he’s across the line – if not, we just let the D-line and linebackers handle him,” Allen said of handling a running quarterback. “We just stay back and make sure he doesn’t throw the ball over our head. Basically, we’re the last line of defense, so we can’t have anything get behind us.”

Kane said the Huskies are going through scrambling drills in which the scout-team quarterback will make sure to roll out in a dual-threat position to test the defense. There will be tweaks here and there, Kane said, but he trusts the speed of the NIU defense. As for making sure the safeties don’t bite on the run only to be beat deep on the pass, Kane said he trusts the junior safety with the responsibility.

“He’s a smart enough football player to understand what his role is back there,” Kane said. “He’s 30 yards deep, he doesn’t need to come up and tackle the quarterback at the line of scrimmage. He’s the last line of defense; hopefully, it doesn’t get that far.”

This week: at No. 22 Oklahoma State (1-0) 4 – NIU (0-1) Last week: lost 40-34 (3OT) at Wyoming Time will tell how good Wyoming is and how bad the season-opening loss really is, but the Huskies have built enough capital over the years to get the benefit of the doubt.

11 – KENT STATE (0-1) Last week: lost 33-13 at Penn State The Golden Flashes held their own for a half against Penn State, only trailing 16-13 after halftime. If they’re going to have any success, it will likely come in low-scoring games.

8 – OHIO (0-1) Last week: lost 56-54 (3OT) against Texas State Losing a triple overtime game to start the year is tough enough, but the Bobcats got even more bad news with star running back AJ Ouellette being out indefinitely with a foot injury.

12 – BUFFALO (0-1) Last week: lost 22-16 against Albany Losing at home against an FCS team to open the year is not ideal – especially against one that went 3-8 last year. On the plus side, we learned that Albany’s mascot is the Great Danes.

Hard to say Bears are better than last year BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush I’ve stalled as long as I can, but sometime between now and noon Sunday I guess I have to put my name on my best guess as to how the Bears will finish this season.

I know, it’s about as meaningless as Donald Trump’s comb-over and Hillary Clinton’s pants suits in the grand scheme of things, but it’s something we do for fun every year, and how can you analyze a team’s performance at the end of the season if you don’t establish your expectations at the start?

I have been on a world-class roller coaster with this team dating to the beginning of the new league year in March, disappointed in some free agency decisions and thrilled by others and wild about several draft picks while being underwhelmed by some.

It starts with the schedule, and although it is usually a huge mistake to base your predictions on how good or

bad other teams you haven’t seen play yet are in the “Not For Long” league of instant turnarounds and multiple worstto-firsts, the 2016 Bears slate is clearly not a murderer’s row.

Philadelphia, Dallas, Detroit, Tennessee and San Francisco are absolutely all winnable games, and Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Tampa Bay and the New York Giants look beatable right now.

That’s 10 wins should the Bears win all of them, which they absolutely won’t.

On the other hand, while Green Bay, Minnesota, Houston and Washington – the only 2015 playoff teams the Bears will face – probably will be favorites over the Bears, it’s unlikely they’ll lose all six of those.

I love the free agency signings of Danny Trevathan, Jerrell Freeman, Akiem Hicks and, of course, Josh Sitton, although I’m a great deal less ebullient with the arrivals of Bobby Massey, Ted Larsen and Connor Barth.

It was clear to all of us that Shea McClellin, Martellus Bennett, Antrel Rolle and Jarvis Jenkins had to go, I’m ambivalent about the Matt Forte decision, disappointed that Matt Slauson is gone,

and although I can’t argue that Robbie Gould earned the right to stay, I can’t find any rationale to suggest swapping him out for Connor Barth makes sense or was handled in the right way.

I am not disappointed by the Leonard Floyd pick – I want to see him play before I go there – but I am disappointed he was taken with Laremy Tunsil still on the board.

I am perhaps more optimistic than I should be about the futures of Jordan Howard, Cody Whitehair, Jonathan Bullard, Nick Kwiatkowski, Deon Bush and Deiondre Hall.

Throw all that in the blender and what does it mean?

I think the Bears right now are a better football team than they were at the end of last season, a 6-10 season against what for now looks like it was a tougher slate.

They are better principally because they are dramatically improved in the front seven on defense with the arrivals of Trevathan, Freeman and Hicks, good health and year’s experience as outside 3-4 linebackers for Willie Young and Lamarr Houston and because I really think

Eddie Goldman can be a Pro Bowler as he continues to grow and mature.

But that doesn’t guarantee they’ll win more than six.

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio appears to agree with me when he tells us, “I think we are improved up front, in the front seven.

“We’re basically a very similar group on the back end right now. That hasn’t changed a whole lot.

“I think we’ve gotten better in spot,s but it still has to be a better all 11.”

The Bears won’t be worse on offense – replacing Forte’s and Bennett’s production is iffy – but being better depends on receivers Alshon Jeffery, Kevin White and Eddie Royal all staying on the field.

Does it all convert to more than six wins? I’m going to ruminate while I still have a couple of days left before I put my name on that one.

DEKALB DEFENSE OFF TO HOT START

DeKalb has established itself as an offensive team the past few years, but coach Matt Weckler said the defense for the Barbs this year would be just as good, if not better, than the offense.

Through two games, it seems as if he may be right.

The Barbs’ offense is as high-powered as ever, scoring 78 points in racing out to a 2-0 start. But they’ve surrendered just 22 so far – and all 12 against Moline in Week 1 came with a running clock and the backups in.

Moline is still in rebuilding mode, but the Barb defense didn’t let down in Week 2 against Carmel and running back Rondel Jamison, a three-star recruit according to Rivals with an offer from Purdue. Jamison had 155 yards on 19 carries in Week 1, but the Barbs held him to 65 yards on 22 carries Friday. He didn’t have a run of over 7 yards until the fourth quarter.

Dwayne Lacey shined in Week 1, picking up a couple of sacks. In Week 2 against the Corsairs (1-1), Eric Letterer had a couple of open-field tackles and a fumble recovery.

After four lost fumbles in Week 1 against Brooks, Jack Douglas threw four interceptions against the Vikings on Friday. But he also had four touchdowns and 183 yards as the Knights jumped out to a 13-0 lead. After Geneva tied it at 13, Kaneland scored in the third and never trailed again.

The Knights were outgained 379-248 in the win, plus gave up a kick return for a score. They also gave up 21 first downs while getting just 12 and lost the time of possession battle 28:07-19:53, but stayed perfect heading into their Week 3 match– Eddie Carifio, Daily Chronicle up against Rich Central, which lost 56-19 to St. Rita on Friday to fall to 1-1.

The league won’t crown a champion in 2016 because it can’t. With 13 members it is impossible for everyone to play one another, but what it might do after a fast start in the nonconference schedule is place the most members in the IHSA Playoffs from one free-standing conference ever.

The league is off to an 18-8 collective start after two weeks and it looks entirely possible there’s at least eight playoff teams in the 13-team grouping. With a few breaks, it’s possible that the league could net as many as 10.

And while the winning percentage of the league is certain to go down in the coming weeks as most of the teams are playing one another, a three or four loss team in the Southwest Suburban will be as battle tested as anyone come playoff time.

Prairie Ridge took a huge step toward the Fox Valley Conference title with its 31-20 victory over Huntley Friday night.

The Wolves – 2-0 and No. 2 in The Associated Press Class 6A poll this week – jumped out to a 17-0 lead early in the third quarter and did not let the Red Raiders get closer than 10 points after that.

Quarterback Samson Evans carried 24 times for 203 yards and two touchdowns, while throwing for another score. The Wolves’ defense turned in another solid performance, almost holding Huntley (1-1) to 13 points. The Raiders scored their final touchdown with eight seconds remaining.

Prairie Ridge now has beaten CaryGrove (26-14) and Huntley, which were expected to be the other two top teams in the FVC. “It’s a matter of keeping the guys focused now for the next seven weeks,” Wolves coach Chris Schremp said. “Every team in our conference seems to have a D-I player, and those players can turn games around. We just have to keep level-headed.”

OSWEGO SCHOOLS FINDING WAYS TO WIN

The School District 308 football teams could not look more different through two weeks of the season. The Oswego East offense has put up 97 points in its 2-0 start, most recently with a 48-14 win over Romeoville. Ivory Kelly-Martin had 161 yards on nine carries for four touchdowns – by halftime. The Oswego East senior transfer now has 383 yards on 33 carries and has scored eight touchdowns for the Wolves.

In contrast, Oswego had just 15 yards of offense and no first downs at halftime in Friday’s home opener against Plainfield North. Most notable through two weeks has been Oswego’s defense, which recorded three interceptions and a fumble recovery against the Tigers in the 12-0 shutout win. The Oswego defense has allowed six points in two games in part to lineman Noah Shannon (2 sacks) and linebacker Dayne Millard (14 tackles) as well as the pass coverage from Kyle Keeton and Julian Bell, who combined for three interceptions against Plainfield North.

A little further west, Plano’s Tyler Ward continues to maintain a steady command at quarterback. He threw three touchdown passes to Israel Adeoti (4 catches, 100 yards) in Plano’s 42-12 win over Harvard. Ward finished 8 of 12 passing for 135 yards and a total of four TDs. The Reapers will have to maintain that high offensive output when Plano travels to Herscher for Week 3. Herscher has scored 111 points in its opening two games – and has allowed just six.

The junior middle hitter had 38 kills in the four-game tournament. A physical education major, the junior from DeKalb’s best game was in a 3-1 loss to Bluffton where she had a team high 14 kills and a .407 attack percentage with four blocks.

In a sweep of Lincoln and Joliet Junior College on August 27, Grider had 14 digs, while Fedderly had 24 assists.

• • • A junior on the Augustana women’s golf team, Katie Thurlby averaged 93.2 strokes per round in 2015.

But the Genoa-Kingston grad will miss the fall portion of the Vikings’ schedule because she is headed to an international study term.

Zack Martinelli kicked off his senior year with a wild season opener.

The Central College football team traveled to Washington and beat Whitworth 50-49 in overtime on Saturday.

The Kaneland grad had eight catches for 99 yards with a touchdown. His longest reception of the day was a 29 yard pass from quarterback Riley Gray. Martinelli also had 54 kickoff return yards and 13 punt return yards. He still holds the Dutch record for longest reception, a 99 yards touchdown on September 12, 2015 against Monmouth.

Abreu stays hot, White Sox rally past Tigers

CHICAGO – Slugger Jose Abreu looks like his old self again, which is good news for the White Sox, even if it’s a bit too late.

Abreu had three more hits, Avisail Garcia hit a go-ahead single against his former team in a fourrun eighth inning and the Sox beat the Detroit Tigers, 7-4, on Wednesday.

The Tigers wasted a chance to move into a tie with Baltimore for the second wild card. The

teams begin a three-game series Friday in Detroit.

Abreu raised his batting average to .298, the highest it had been since April 9. The first baseman has hit .342 since the AllStar break, 65 points better than in the first half. “(The coaches) have worked with me on the right approach and corrected some things in my offense that I hadn’t been doing before,” Abreu said through an interpreter.

“You work hard and make adjustments, and the results, you can find them at the end of the day.”

“They just said, ‘please tell our story, because nobody has told it.’ ” Kirk Wolfinger, filmmaker on such a project – “and by that I mean one that didn’t deal with conspiracy theories,” he said.

“They placed no restrictions on me,” he said. “They just said, ‘please tell our story, because nobody has told it.’”

The movie features interviews with military personnel who were near the crash, first responders, the building’s assistant operations manager and its structural engineer. Stories of what happened on the ground are interspersed with accounts of what happened in the sky, thanks to the memories of an FAA air traffic controller.

The tales are harrowing: people crawling through rooms pitch-black with smoke; workers trying to break through shatter-proof windows that had been installed during a recent ren-

ovation; staircases so hot they burned people’s feet through their shoes.

The question remains: Is the American public interested in what happened at the Pentagon on 9/11?

Retired Navy submarine captain Bill Toti, who survived the Pentagon attack and is featured in the movie, says he can understand why many people focus on New York. But “just like Korea is the forgotten war, the Pentagon is the forgotten 9/11.”

He offered up a couple of theories why during a phone conversation last week. The first is the one he’d prefer to believe: New York happened on live TV while the world watched, and it was visually shocking in ways the Pentagon wasn’t. The Pentagon, though it housed as many people as the World Trade Center, proved to be a less vulnerable building; many more people walked away from the Pentagon than did from the Twin Towers.

He has another theory, too, though it leaves him less comfortable: “I’ve had some indication that there

Friendship that lasts forever. How blessed anyone is who has this in their life – let alone five friends who are all tied together in a lifelong bond.

This is the story of “The Dixie Swim Club,” the next production of Stage Coach Players, with life’s ups and downs, turns and twists, laughter and sadness we all experience.

The five women, who met as college swim teammates, continue to meet annually for a long, beachside weekend to reminisce, commiserate and celebrate the year gone by. The action revolves around inedible hors d’oeuvres and beverages, career and marriage choices, cosmetic surgery and chronic injuries and how everyone’s lives unfold during four of these reunions over the course of 50 years.

The small, tight-knit cast consists of Maria Boynton, Terri Crain Goodman, Teresa Haish, Amy Whelan and Marykim Whiteside, all of whom are well-known Stagecoachers. Most of

these actresses have been onstage in musicals, so a dramedy like “The Dixie Swim Club” has been a challenge and a welcome change of pace.

David Booth, the director whose last production was “The Lion in Winter” three years ago, is enjoying the growth and dedication that everyone is experiencing. He’s impressed with the depth of the character – they are not stereotypical girlfriends – and how they are all woven together so skillfully.

“Everyone will identify with their struggles and joys as love keeps them together for life. We are all very lucky to have those relationships ourselves,” Booth said in a news release.

By the time the play ends, the audience will feel like these women are their friends, too.

are people in the country who think: At the Pentagon, they’re military, so it’s kind of their job to die,” he said.

“Although nobody has ever said that to me straight-out, I do sometimes think that the loss of life of a civilian who’s not a combatant is more profound than somebody who is a combatant.”

And yet, ironically, most of the people who were killed at the Pentagon were civilians. That was one of the big surprises for Wolfinger. This wasn’t a military story at all. About 20,000 people work at the Pentagon, and a lot of them aren’t in uniform.

“There are civilian secretaries and administrators and building superintendents, private contractors doing electrical and plumbing,” Wolfinger said. “All those people were in the building that day and they are part of our story.”

One of the non-military voices in the film is Ed Hannon, then the Arlington County fire department captain. In one of the movie’s most powerful moments, Hannon describes kneeling in prayer along with many others in a courtyard in the center of the Pentagon. The FAA had alerted those on the ground that another airplane was within minutes of delivering a second assault. There was no

way to make it out of the serpentine facility fast enough, Hannon knew, so he prepared to die as the sound of a jet engine grew louder and louder.

“Then, almost instantaneously, all these military guys are starting to cheer,” Hannon recalled. What they were hearing was a friendly fighter plane that dipped its wing as it passed overhead. “Then all we had was a fire to fight,” he said.

This was Toti’s story: On the evening of Sept. 10, he had stuck a letter in his boss’s mailbox announcing that he’d decided to retire. The next morning, he escaped the crash vicinity unscathed, and spent the day carrying the wounded to ambulances and helicopters. He was easy for Wolfinger to spot in old news footage.

The Navy ended up designating him its lead for the recovery effort.

One of the first things he did when he returned on Sept. 12 was retrieve the letter and tear it up.

That same day, the Naval Historical Center begged him to use his access to rescue some paintings from the wreckage. While collecting a piece from a conference room, he heard a knock on the window. It was a firefighter warning that the ceiling above him was still on fire.

He has a lot of other stories, too.

So does everyone else who was there.

Tragic tales and heroic ones. Stories you wouldn’t believe. If only someone would ask.

ALPHA to host lecture on ancient Greek art DAILY CHRONICLE

ALPHA: Friends of Antiquity will begin its 2016 Fall Lecture Series on Sept. 15 with “Masterpieces of Greek Art,” presented by Professor Emeritus Dimitri Liakos.

The free lecture will take place at 7:30 p.m. in room 102 of the Jack Arends Visual Arts Building on the Northern Illinois University campus in DeKalb.

Liakos taught art history and archaeology at NIU for more than 40 years and has lectured at archaeological sites and museums in Europe, Africa and Asia, as well as countless universities in the United States.

Liakos will clarify a misconception that Greek art started in Classical times (480-330 BC). The truth is that Greek art was born many centuries earlier. A discussion and explanation will deal with prehistorical, proto-historical and historical Greek art in the

areas of sculpture and vase painting.

Future lectures in the series will be “Greek Temples, Theaters and Sanctuaries” on Oct. 13 and “Masterpieces of Greek Architectural Sculpture: Meaning and Symbolism” on Nov. 3, both presented by Liakos.

Since its founding in 1971, ALPHA has offered more than 400 free lectures and continues its purpose to educate the public on the importance of learning about Roman, Greek, Egyptian, Etruscan, Byzantine and all ancient civilizations. Everyone is invited to attend.

This year, the lectures are dedicated to the memory of Eva Marie Leonard who died March 17. She was a longtime, dedicated member of ALPHA. DeKalb artist featured in New York exhibition DAILY CHRONICLE

Artist Dale Osterle of DeKalb will open an exhibition of hand-painted etchings, titled “A Sense of Place,” today at the National Association of Women Artists in New York City. The exhibit runs through Sept. 30.

Osterle grew up in New England with an affinity for winding paths trees and woods. These landscapes are

romantic and expressionistic portrayals of places she has traveled and lived in.

After visiting Provence, France, in late 1980s she started using strong, simple lines and sweeps of color in long and vertical slices. Osterle’s etchings are done with fine layers of oil paint.

The images are limited editions and unique because of the hand painting.

Osterle received her BFA from

Rhode Island School of Design and later became interested in printmaking, studying with David Dreisbach.

Numerous galleries and art consultants have represented her nationally.

Corporate collections include IBM, McDonald’s, Reader’s Digest and Borg Warner, and she has had the honor of showing at the Kennedy Center, The National Museum for Women in the Arts and the United Nations.

‘Barbed Wire Pioneers’ screening set for Sept. 22 DAILY CHRONICLE The DeKalb Area Agricultural Heritage Association will host the 18th anniversary screening of “Barbed Wire Pioneers” at 6 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Egyptian Theatre in DeKalb.

This award-winning documentary, directed by Professor Jeff Chown of Northern Illinois University, depicts the achievements of Isaac Ellwood, Jacob Haish and Joseph Glidden,

the first successful manufacturers of barbed wire. Find out how these men changed the world and shaped the future of DeKalb, NIU and the American West with their technology.

A panel discussion following the film will feature Chown, Brian Reis, director of the Ellwood House and Museum, and Rob Glover, director of the Glidden Homestead.

Doors open at 6 p.m. with time for attendees to learn how they can become involved with efforts taking place in DeKalb County to end hunger and food insecurity. September is Hunger Awareness Month.

The movie will begin at 7 p.m. and a short panel discussion will follow the showing at 8:30 p.m. The panel will be made up of individuals who are working daily to end food insecurity in DeKalb County. The panel will be moderated by Dan Kenney, executive director of DeKalb County Community Gardens.

Other local organizations involved in the evening include: The DeKalb County Local Food Security Council; KishHealth System, now part of Northwestern Medicine; Barb Food Mart; Voluntary Action Center; Hope Haven; Safe Passage; DeKalb County Health Department; Live Healthy DeKalb County; DeKalb County Community Gardens; DeKalb County Community Foundation; and Northern Illinois University.

In Illinois, one in seven people struggles with hunger. In DeKalb County, 20.3 percent of children live with food insecurity, according to the Feeding America website, and statistics provided by the Northern Illinois Food Bank. More than 13,000 people in DeKalb County live without knowing where or when they may eat their next meal.

In the film, directors Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush examine the issue of hunger in America through the lens of three people struggling with food insecurity: Barbie, a single Philadelphia mother who grew up in poverty and is trying to provide a better life for her two kids; Rosie, a Colorado fifth-grader who often has to depend on friends and neighbors to feed her and has trouble concentrating in school; and Tremonica, a Mississippi second-grader whose asthma and health issues are exacerbated by the largely empty calories her hardworking mother can afford.

When I urge my patients to consider strength and power training, they understand the merits of keeping muscles strong as they age. But they often ask if strength and power training are as good as aerobic exercise in reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. There is growing evidence they do, although the evidence is not yet as strong as for aerobic exercise.

I’ve adopted an exercise program of aerobic exercise four to five days a week and strength training twice a week. If new evidence causes me to change my mind about what’s best for me, I’ll change my routine.

Dear Dr. K: What’s the difference between strength and power training? Is one better than the other?

Dear Reader: Your muscles enable you to carry groceries, climb stairs, get out of a chair and swing a golf club. The stronger and more powerful your muscles are, the easier all of these everyday tasks and others will be. But weak muscles turn seemingly simple tasks, such as walking, into a chore. They are a primary reason why many people lose their independence as they age.

Strength and power training can curb or even halt these changes. They help your muscles function at a high level as you get older. And there are additional benefits.

As you strengthen your muscles, you tone your arms and legs. You also burn more calories, since muscles require energy (calories) to function.

You even can help control various medical problems. For example, you can reduce your risk of heart disease, slow the advance of osteoporosis, ease arthritis pain and help manage or prevent Type 2 diabetes.

So exactly what are strength and power training?

Strength training is a popular term for exercises that build muscle by harnessing resistance – that is, an opposing force that muscles must strain against. Strength training sometimes is called resistance training or weight training. Resistance can be supplied by your body weight, free weights such as dumbbells and weighted cuffs, elasticized bands or specialized machines. No matter what kind of resistance you use, putting more than the usual amount of load on your muscles makes them stronger.

Power training is aimed at increasing power, which is the product of both strength and speed. Power reflects how

In yesterday’s deal, East failed to cover dummy’s spade jack with his queen because he believed it would save declarer a guess in the suit.

However, he should have realized that declarer knew the layout and not played low. This deal is a tougher example of the same theme.

South was in four spades. What happened after West led a diamond?

East took dummy’s diamond jack with his queen and cashed the club king. (Remember, lead king from aceking and king-queen after trick one.)

When West discouraged with his club three, East cashed the club ace and tried to take the setting trick with the diamond ace, but South ruffed.

Now declarer had to play the trump suit without loss -- how, though?

It looked like he should hope for a doubleton queen somewhere, or for West to have the singleton queen.

But who had the queen?

South was sure that it was West.

Why? East had produced 13 high-card points and seemed to have a balanced hand. If he had the spade queen also, he would have opened one no-trump.

Then, somehow sensing the position, South led his spade jack. West knew the situation, so he covered with his queen. Declarer won with dummy’s king and had to decide if East had started with 10-doubleton (cash the ace) or two low (return to hand in a minor and run the spade nine).

As you can guess, South guessed correctly.
