kcraver@shawmedia.com FOX LAKE – If Melodie Gliniewicz is convicted and still gets her disgraced late husband’s police pension, several General Assembly members want this incident to be the last of its kind.

A new effort is under way to pass a law that would allow for the forfeiture of survivor benefits for anyone convicted of a felony related to the service of any public employees hired after the law’s effective date. An effort earlier this year by state Sen. Pam Althoff, R-McHenry, stalled in the Senate, but state Rep. David McSweeney, R-Barrington Hills, is attempting it through a House bill.

He filed House Bill 6602 last Wednesday, almost one year to the day that Lt. Joe Gliniewicz was found shot to death responding to a call that turned out to be an elaborately staged suicide meant to hide his criminal dealings.

The bill, if passed by lawmakers during the fall veto session, will not be applicable to Melodie Gliniewicz, who faces felony charges of money laundering, conspiracy and misusing charitable funds relating to the village’s Police Explorers youth program, which her late husband ran.

While state law prevents convicted felons from receiving a pension if their criminal activity is related to their public service, Gliniewicz’s alleged crimes did not surface until after his death.

“Because Lt. Gliniewicz had passed away, there was no mechanism to prohibit his wife and family from receiving his pension benefits – there’s no statute that identifies this circumstance,” said Althoff, whose district includes Fox Lake.

Melodie Gliniewicz has pleaded not guilty – she faces a maximum of seven years in prison if found guilty on all charges. The village’s Police Pension Board is delaying its decision regarding granting her the pension until after her trial, which is scheduled for mid-November. Melodie Gliniewicz is eligible under the law for up to 75 percent of her late husband’s $96,000 salary.

dous manhunt for the alleged shooter, a nationwide outpouring of grief and a hero’s funeral for the 30-year veteran that locals nicknamed “G.I. Joe.” But investigators concluded in November 2016 that Gliniewicz killed himself and staged a crime scene out of fear of getting caught stealing from the Police Explorers Post 300.

Investigators concluded that he used the money for personal expenses such as personal loans, gym memberships, travel and adult websites, and attempted to put a hit out on the new village administrator who he feared would uncover his misdeeds. Gliniewicz also illegally accumulated thousands of dollars in federal military surplus.

Documents released in the months after his death revealed that he was steadily promoted and given increased responsibilities, despite allegations of sexual harassment, threatening behaviors and problem drinking.

Although Fox Lake is not in McSweeney’s district, he said he wanted to prevent this kind of situation from happening elsewhere. Althoff already has pre-filed in the Senate to sponsor the bill should it pass the House.

Lawmakers have a small window to pass legislation during the veto session that begins after the Nov. 8 election. The bill can be refiled with the new General Assembly when the spring session begins next January.

Fox Lake disbanded the Explorers program, and currently has no interest in resurrecting it.

‘Grander reopening’ of DeKalb library set for Saturday

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – As the city prepares for Saturday’s “grander opening” of the public library, a search is also underway to find a new director to lead it.

The library closed last month for the final work on the two-phase, $25.3 million construction and redevelopment project. The first half of the work saw a brand-new 45,500-square-foot building constructed. As part of this latest work, the old building – called the Haish Memorial Library – was restored. The combined work will leave the city with a 65,000-square-foot library, which is nearly triple its former size.

The Haish Memorial Library was originally built thanks to a $150,000 bequest from barbed wire baron Jacob Haish and is listed on the National

Register for Historic Places, library spokeswoman Edith Craig said.

As part of the renovation, the reference room was scheduled to be converted into a teen area where youth can gather. It will include a sitting room, teen-oriented collections, and a gaming system. The old fiction room is expected to house items about the area’s history, among the many changes, Craig said.

Additionally, she said, the back office space and the main floor are set to become the Nancy D. Castle Collaboration Studio. The area is also going to be home to The KishHealth Computer Lab. “It (the renovated building) has cork floors in the same pattern that it had in the ’30s when it opened,” Craig said. “The skylight has been cleaned.

The project started in 2014. At the beginning of this year, the newly constructed building was opened to the public. If featured bright lighting and open entry and lobby areas, meeting rooms and children’s and adult materials area.

Construction was on hold last year after the state failed to have a budget in place. Without it, payments on an $11.6 million grant for the construction work were stopped.

The rest of the money for the project came from a $500,000 increase in the library’s property tax levy, $2 million in tax increment financing funds, loans from at least three area banks and private donations, according to city documents.

The mayor and others are looking forward to the grand opening.

“I think it will be a major attraction

to our downtown traffic,” Mayor John Rey said.

The word also is out that the library “seeks a creative and innovative leader as our next library director,” according to a post announcing the position being vacated by Director Dee Coover.

Coover is set to retire Dec. 31 after more than 20 years with the library.

According to the job posting, the director will be paid $85,000 a year for a role that manages the equivalent of 30 full-time staff and oversees a $2 million annual budget, among a host of other duties and responsibilities.

“The director must have the ability to work with the board of trustees, library staff and city government to advance the library as a keystone institution for DeKalb,” the job post reads.

The deadline to apply for the job is Sept. 23.

eolson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The park district is planning a big party Saturday, and there’s still time for those interested to get tickets and “Leaf a Legacy.”

The Sycamore Park District’s Good Tymes Revival will be from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Those who spring for $50 tickets not only will contribute to the district’s fundraising campaign, but also get the chance to hit an adult-size inflatable slide, play games like giant-sized Jenga, and enjoy dueling pianos, fun and games, and a cash bar with a signature park district cocktail.

“It’s a chance to celebrate being a kid, and all of the joy that the park district brings our community,” Sarah Rex, a recreation supervisor for

the district, said. “There’s a history of our community coming together to make things happen.”

That process already has begun anew in Sycamore. In November 2014, voters approved a $9 million bond sale referendum. The funds were to be used to pay for several public improvements including a new community center, dog park, sled hill, sports complex improvements, and increased tax bills about $80 a year for a home valued at $150,000.

The park district has involved residents in the process through advisory committees on each of the projects. In addition to the borrowed money, the district is hoping to secure $3 million in grant funds along with the $1 million fundraising campaign to help complete the projects in its “Action 2020” plan.

The Good Tymes Revival will mark the start of the public phase of that campaign, Rex said. On Friday, park employees placed another decal onto the sycamore leaf on the “Leaf a Legacy” sign at the Sycamore Golf Course, indicating the district is about halfway to its goal.

Proceeds from ticket purchases will go toward the legacy campaign, and in addition, an anonymous donor has agreed to contribute a 50 percent match, Rex said. So every $50 ticket sold will garner an extra $25 donation.

“They are going to come and help us transform [the maintenance building] into this great music venue,” Rex said. ”We’re going to have Howl at the Moon dueling pianos, we’re going to have a great backdrop, they’re going to have a big projection slide-show. “ Other event sponsors include Banner Up Signs, Provident Direct, OLT Marketing and WDBK-FM (B95) radio.

BRIEF Firefighters respond to early morning fire in Kingston

KINGSTON – A house fire in Kingston is under investigation after firefighters from several departments were called to

respond Monday.

According to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, police and firefighters responded around 2:40 a.m.

Monday to a fire at a home at 800 Thurlby

Drive, just off Railroad Street in Kingston.

No one was injured in the fire, which appeared to have started outside the house, the release said.

Firefighters from Genoa-Kingston,

Sycamore, Kirkland, DeKalb, and Marengo responded to the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, police said.

Observers: Monarch count very low this year The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Butterfly observers in Illinois are seeing a phenomenon this year that is playing out nationally: As the monarch starts its near-3,000mile winter migration from Canada to Mexico, their observed numbers are extremely low.

Chicago Academy of Sciences chief curator Doug Taron told The Chicago Tribune that the monarch is “the second or third most common species” of butterfly that observers record, but that this year, it’s the “seventh.”

Taron said this summer has been “pretty dismal” for butterflies in general in Illinois. Observers typically record 85 species a year, but current reports show 68 this summer.

Monarch Joint Venture co-chairwoman Karen Oberhauser said the monarchs’ difficult summer began March 9 in forested mountains near Mexico City, where tens of millions of them spend their winters. An intense storm lashed the area with rain, hail and snow, killing large numbers of the butterflies and inflicting heavy damage to their habitat.

Data from Monarch Larva Monitoring Project show the number of butterfly larva this year rivaled the level seen in 2013. That year yielded “the lowest number of monarchs ever seen in Mexico,” a Monarch Joint Venture report stated.

Since about 1996, the monarchs’ presence in their Mexico habitat has been shrinking, from almost 45 acres to 9.9 acres recording in 2015, accord-

Witness: Man shot after tackling suburban Chicago officer

ROUND LAKE – A suburban Chicago resident said a man suspected of breaking into homes had tackled a police officer before the officer fatally shot him Friday night.

RICHMOND, Va. – College applications and high school graduation are the biggest worries for most 17-year-olds. For Gavin Grimm, it’s waiting for the nation’s highest court to decide whether he can use the boys restroom.

Grimm, who was born female but identifies as male, heads back to Gloucester High School for his senior year this week as the U.S. Supreme Court considers whether to intervene in his case that challenges the county school’s policy barring him from using the bathroom of his choice.

For now, Grimm will have to continue using a private single-stall restroom or a bathroom in the nurse’s office. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sided in April with Grimm, but the Supreme Court recently ruled that the school board can keep him out of the boys restroom at least until the justices decide whether to hear the school board’s appeal.

Wave of IS-claimed Syria bombing kill at least 48

BEIRUT – Near-simultaneous bombings claimed by the Islamic State group struck in and around strongholds of the Syrian government and Kurdish troops Monday, killing at least 48 people in a wave of attacks that came a day after the militants lost a vital link to the outside world along the Syrian-Turkish border.

said the attacks included six suicide bombings and one remotely detonated blast. Most targeted security forces.

The Britain-based Observatory, which maintains a network of contacts in Syria, put the overall death toll at 53, although Syrian state TV said 48 were killed.

Jennifer Cafarella, a Syria expert with the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War, said it was too soon to say whether the attacks by the IS group were a reaction to its recent defeats along the border.

But she cautioned that setbacks for IS can lead to “a dangerous new phase” by the group, which sometimes resorts to “infiltration and spectacular attacks that exploit and widen rifts” between populations, groups and security forces in both western and northern Syria.

Faraway asteroid named after Freddie Mercury

LONDON – Queen guitarist Brian May said an asteroid in Jupiter’s orbit has been named after the band’s late frontman Freddie Mercury on what would have been his 70th birthday.

May said the International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Centre has designated an asteroid discovered in 1991 as “Asteroid 17473 Freddiemercury.”

Obama cancels meeting with Philippine President Duterte

VIENTIANE, Laos – President Barack Obama called off a planned meeting Tuesday with new Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, seeking distance from a U.S. ally’s leader during a diplomatic tour that’s put Obama in close quarters with a cast of contentious world figures.

It’s unusual for one president to tell another what to say or not say, and much rarer to call the other a “son of a b****.” Duterte managed to do both just before flying to Laos for a regional summit, warning Obama not to challenge him over extrajudicial killings in the Philippines.

“Clearly, he’s a colorful guy,” Obama said.

“What I’ve instructed my team to do is talk to their Philippine counterparts to find out is this in fact a time where we can have some constructive, productive conversations.”

Early Tuesday, National Security Council spokesman Ned Price said the meeting with Duterte was off.

Duterte has been under intense global scrutiny over the more than 2,000 suspected drug dealers and users killed since he took office.

Obama had said he planned to raise the issue in his first meeting with Duterte, but the Philippine leader insisted he was only listening to his own country’s people.

“You must be respectful,” Duterte said of Obama. “Do not just throw questions.” Using the Tagalog phrase for “son of a b****,” he said, “Putang ina I will swear at you in that forum.”

He made the comment to reporters in Manilla.

Eager to show he wouldn’t yield, Obama

said he would “undoubtedly” still bring up human rights and due process concerns “if and when” the two do meet.

The bizarre rift with the leader of a U.S. treaty ally was the most glaring example of how Obama has frequently found himself bound to foreign countries and leaders whose ties to the U.S. are critical even if their values sharply diverge.

In Hangzhou this week, Obama’s first stop in Asia, he heaped praise on Chinese President Xi Jinping for hosting the Group of 20 economic summit in his country, an authoritarian state long accused of human-rights violations.

His next stop was another one-party communist country with a dismal rights record: Laos, where mysterious disappearances have fueled concerns about a government crackdown.

And sitting down with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Obama made no mention in public of the roughly 35,000 people Erdogan’s government detained after the summer’s failed coup in Turkey. Instead, he worked to reassure the NATO ally the U.S. would help bring to justice whoever was responsible for plotting the coup.

Obama also spent about 90 minutes Monday with Russian President Vladimir Putin, another leader whose fate seems intertwined with Obama’s in all the wrong ways. On opposing sides of many global issues, the U.S. and Russia are nonetheless trying to broker a deal to address the Syrian civil war and perhaps even partner militarily there.

“President Putin’s less colorful,” Obama said, comparing him with Duterte. “But typically the tone of our meetings is candid, blunt, businesslike.”

Clinton blasts Russia; Trump softens immigration stance

CLEVELAND – Setting the stage on Labor Day for a critical month in their testy presidential campaign, Donald Trump softened his stance on immigration while Hillary Clinton blasted Russia for its suspected tampering in the U.S. electoral process.

In a rare news conference aboard her new campaign plane, Clinton said she is concerned about “credible reports about Russian government interference in our elections.”

“We are going to have to take those threats and attacks seriously,” Clinton told reporters traveling with her from Ohio to Illinois.

Clinton’s comments come after reports that the Russian government may have been involved in the hacking of Democratic National Committee emails just days before the party’s national convention. The emails, later revealed by WikiLeaks, showed some DNC officials favoring Clinton over her primary opponent, Bernie Sanders – who has since endorsed Clinton for president.

She said Russian President Vladimir Putin appears “quite satisfied with himself” and said Trump “has generally parroted what is a Putin-Kremlin line.”

Meanwhile, Trump extended a rare invitation to journalists to accompany him on his private plane from Cleveland to Youngstown, Ohio. The billionaire businessman appeared to pivot away from his hard-line position on immigration, saying, “I’m all about jobs now.”

Any immigrants who want full citizenship must return to their countries of

origin and get in line, he told reporters – but he would not rule out a pathway to legal status for the millions living in the U.S. illegally, as he did in a long-awaited policy speech last week.

“We’re going to make that decision into the future,” Trump said.

Clinton powered through a coughing fit at a Labor Day festival at a Cleveland

park, sharply criticizing Trump’s recent trip to Mexico as “an embarrassing international incident.” Unwilling to allow Trump to modify his immigration stances, she said his address later that night in Arizona amounted to a “doubling down on his absurd plan to send a deportation force to round up 16 million people.”

“He can try to fool voters into thinking somehow he’s not as harsh and inhumane as he seems, but it’s too late,” Clinton said.

Clinton’s 25-minute question-and-answer session was her first extensive availability with reporters since early December. Beyond Russia, she answered questions about the ongoing controversy surrounding her use of a private email server while secretary of state, which Trump has used to cast doubt over her ability to protect classified information.

“I take classification seriously,” she said.

Trump told reporters Monday that “on occasion,” he will invite journalists to travel with him.

The two campaigns arrived in Cleveland within hours of each other, underscoring Ohio’s quadrennial role in presidential campaigns. No Republican has won the White House without carrying the state.

Far-right activist Phyllis Schlafly dies

The Associated Press ST. LOUIS – Phyllis Schlafly, the outspoken conservative activist who helped defeat the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s and founded the Eagle Forum political group, has died. She was 92.

Schlafly’s family was with her when she died Monday afternoon of cancer at her home in St. Louis, her son John Schlafly said. Funeral arrangements are pending, he said.

Schlafly rose to national attention in 1964 with her self-published book, “A Choice Not an Echo,” that became a manifesto for the far right. The book, which sold 3 million copies, chronicled the history of the Republican National Convention and is credited for helping conservative Sen. Barry Goldwater of Arizona earn the 1964 GOP nomination.

She later helped lead efforts to defeat

the proposed constitutional amendment that would have outlawed gender discrimination, galvanizing the party’s right. She’d graduated from college while working overnight at a factory during World War II, her newspaper column appeared in dozens of newspapers and she was politically active into her 90s – including attending every convenPhyllis tion since her first in Schlafly 1952. She attended this year’s convention as a Donald Trump delegate.

Yet she told The Associated Press in 2007 that perhaps her greatest legacy was the Eagle Forum, which she founded in 1972 in suburban St. Louis, where she lived. The ultraconservative group has chapters in several states and claims 80,000 members.

“I’ve taught literally millions of people how to participate in self-government,” Schlafly said. “I think I’ve built a wonderful organization of volunteers, mostly women but some men, willing to spend their time to get good laws and good politicians.”

The Eagle Forum pushes for low taxes, a strong military and English-only education. The group is against efforts it says are pushed by radical feminists or encroach on U.S. sovereignty, such as guest-worker visas, according to its website, which describes the Equal Rights Amendment as having had a “hidden agenda of tax-funded abortions and same-sex marriages.”

The group said in a statement on its website announcing Schlafly’s death that her “focus from her earliest days until her final ones was protecting the family, which she understood as the building block of life.”

As momentum grew in the 1970s for the Equal Rights Amendment, Schlafly became its most outspoken critic – and was vilified by its supporters. She had a pie smashed into her face and pig’s blood thrown on her, and feminist Betty Friedan once told Schlafly, “I’d like to burn you at the stake.” She was chastised in a 1970s “Doonesbury” – a framed copy of which hung on her office wall.

“What I am defending is the real rights of women,” Schlafly said at the time. “A woman should have the right to be in the home as a wife and mother.”

Thirty-five states ratified the amendment, three short of the necessary 38.

Schlafly said amendment supporters couldn’t prove it was needed.

“They were never able to show women would get any benefit out of it,” she said in 2007. “It (the U.S. Constitution) is already sex-neutral. Women already have all the rights that men have.”

You grab the gallon of milk you forgot yesterday, pick up the cheapest toothpaste, and head over to the checkout line. Just when your quick trip to the grocery store is almost over, the employee at the register says, “Do you have a rewards card?

It’s free to join.”

From department stores to drugstores, retailers are asking consumers to enroll in rewards programs, also called loyalty programs, for access to better deals. But signing up may not be worth the hassle.

“First of all, you’re just going to be annihilated with emails,” says Kurt Jetta, CEO and founder of retail and consumer analytics firm TABS Analytics. “It’s not a weekly thing. It’s a daily thing for most of these retailers.”

The benefits of rewards clubs, however, include exclusive coupons, early access to sale events, and rewards points that can be redeemed for discounts or products.

That lures many shoppers to sign up. The 2015 Colloquy Loyalty Census found that the average U.S. household is enrolled in 29 loyalty programs, but actively participates in only 12.

Rather than signing up for several programs, it may be more beneficial to stick with one or two you’ll use frequently.

Some retailers, such as Nordstrom and Best Buy, structure their programs so that the heaviest spenders reap the greatest rewards. To reach the highest tier of the My Best Buy program, for instance, members have to spend $3,500 in purchases per calendar year. This unlocks a longer returns and exchanges window (45 days compared with the standard 15) and more points for purchases (1.25 points for each dollar spent compared with 0.5 points).

“The perks really go with people who spend the most with a certain brand,” says Bob Phibbs, CEO of consultancy firm The Retail Doctor.

Phibbs recommends looking over your credit card statement to get a sense of where your money is going.

If your spending habits show you’re already loyal to a particular store or brand, you could get the most from a membership there.

Jetta describes rewards programs as an agreement between the store and the shopper: Customers provide demographic or contact information to sign up for a program, and stores use the information to change programs in ways that could potentially retain more customers and increase spending.

In 2015, for example, Starbucks announced partnerships with Spotify and The New York Times to give members access to free music and content.

“They could’ve built a program that was strictly based on buy 10 coffees, get one free, but they’ve now extended it across the store,” says Jeff Berry, senior director of research and development at data analytics company LoyaltyOne. “They’ve really tried to create relevant benefits to their customers.”

So when should you add another store rewards program card to your already crowded key ring? Enroll only if you shop at a store frequently and you’ll actually use the benefits.

Betsy Hull, has been named finance director of the DeKalb County Community Foundation. Hull began her new role Thursday as the inaugural finance director and will be the eighth member of the Community Foundation staff.

As a certified public accountant, Hull brings more than 20 years of accounting and finance experience to the Community Foundation with more than 13 years of experience in the nonprofit sector with the Betsy Hull Northern Illinois University Foundation and the NIU College of Education. Out-of-state plates not cause for stops

In some police and other law enforcement jurisdictions, the concept of a pretext traffic stop is a practice that can lead to the arrest and interception of major criminals even though the initial stop was seemingly minor.

For instance, a person with a parking pass or air freshener attached to his or her rearview mirror might be stopped on that traffic possible violation and then be asked to allow a full search of the entire vehicle in hopes of turning up contraband.

Courts around the country have cast a dim view on this, but not always disallowed evidence that emerges from such dragnets.

However, a recent court ruling in a Kansas case should help to ease a civil liberties dispute for all drivers who travel to adjacent states.

In Kansas, a group of law enforcement officers have held the belief that merely having Colorado license plates is enough probable cause to prompt a full vehicle search. Their logic: Because Colorado allows recreational marijuana, and Kansas does not, any Colorado vehicle might be being used to commit a felony. There’s a monetary motivation, too, because if marijuana is found, Kansas can keep the car under civil forfeiture rules.

Nice try, Kansas. In the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling, the judges noted that recreational use of marijuana is allowed in four states and the medical use is allowed in about 20 more, meaning half of the country would fall under the profiling target set by Kansas law enforcement. That’s not good enough.

The use of out-of-state license plates to target marijuana use might seem appropriate here, but remember that only a couple of generations ago, law enforcement agencies in the Deep South targeted northern vehicles for their efforts to improve voter registration and civil rights for African-Americans.

In some instances, those drivers were assaulted and even murdered.

Taken to the extreme, interstate travel would be horribly compromised. Would all cars from Wyoming be stopped on the pretext that they had fireworks that are illegal in Colorado? Would alcohol and tobacco controls be the next battlegrounds?

The Court of Appeals was right to defend Coloradans’ Fourth Amendment rights regarding searches and seizures, in the same way that local law enforcement agencies should be respecting the constitutional rights of those residents of other states who might find themselves in this state’s borders.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Illinois giving away billions to gambling insiders

To the Editor: Illinois has not only given away billions to gambling insiders since 1990, but also proposes to continue giving away billions more.

The 1990 legislation authorizing 10 casinos in Illinois granted casino licenses worth a Wall Street value of $5 billion ($11 billion in today’s dollars) to political insiders for only $25,000 per license, including a political insider who subsequently went to prison for Illinois corruption.

Currently, the 2016 Illinois gambling expansion bills raise the license fees to only $100,000, constituting more billion-dollar giveaways to political insiders. Furthermore, two bills provide for $900 million in taxpayer dollars to subsidize construction of a Chicago casino.

These legislative proposals have included up to 13 to 14 new casino gambling licenses with a combined Wall Street value of as much as $14 billion. The millions of dollars paid recently for casino licenses in Pennsylvania and New York substantiate that the fair market value of a casino license is hundreds of millions of dollars.

It is noteworthy that instead of saving the cty of Detroit as they promised, the Detroit casinos actually facilitated the city’s financial decline.

As a point of reference, the average U.S. casino nets $1 million per day in pure profit. While most consumer

businesses may take 10 to 20 years to pay off their return on investment, one Illinois casino reportedly had a 100 percent ROI within 90 days after it opened.

The 2009 Illinois Video Gaming Act also highlights the millions of tax dollars being given away to gambling interests. Illinois now has more electronic gambling devices than Nevada, but Illinois has one of the lowest (if not the lowest) tax rates on these devices.

Under the Video Gambling Act, the owner/operators divide 70 percent of the revenues, while the State Treasury receives only 25 percent and local governments only 5 percent.

As former Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn often reminded the public, “You cannot gamble your way to prosperity.”

Gambling shrinks the consumer economy as consumer dollars are diverted into gambling and away from consumer purchases of cars, computers, and even life’s necessities – food, shelter, health care and education.

Via the tax system, Illinois should immediately reclaim the billions of dollars ethically owed to the states by gambling interests. For the future, all states need to become business friendly, expand the consumer base and grow the economy.

Three days without mail is abnormal

To the Editor: What is going on with the U.S. Postal Service?

In one week last month, I didn’t have any mail deliveries on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. I also haven’t received two issues of a weekly magazine: the June 10 and Aug. 12 issues.

No doubt, my magazines are lost in the same USPS black hole that swallowed up the rest of my mail for three days on the week of Aug. 15.

When I phoned the local post office to complain about the above, I asked to speak to the postmaster. In addition to acting as if he couldn’t care less about what I was saying, he told me the mail was “light” that week, so it was “normal” to not have any delivered for three days in a row!

Since when is it “normal” for there to be no mail deliveries on three consecutive mail delivery days?

In 65 years of being alive, I can’t remember more than a single day passing without having at least one piece of junk mail delivered.

If mail delivery only 50 percent of the time is the new “normal;” then, there should be a corresponding 50 percent reduction in the number of mail carriers being paid with federal tax dollars.

Anyone contemplating this year’s appalling presidential campaign may be tempted to explain what’s happening by applying the third rule of bureaucratic organizations, enunciated by the late poet and definitive scholar of Soviet terrorism Robert Conquest.

“The behavior of any bureaucratic organization,” Conquest said, “can best be understood by assuming that it is controlled by a secret cabal of its enemies.”

The Republican and Democratic parties aren’t exactly bureaucratic organizations; they just aspire to be. But their behavior this year certainly looks like it might have been scripted by their fervent foes.

Is it known, for example, just who whispered in Donald Trump’s ear that this was a good year to run for president? He’s been mulling it before, and accumulating national fame as a reality TV star.

In the process, to be fair, he’s had more genuine accomplishments than, say, Kim Kardashian. Moving the real estate family business from the outer boroughs, in a decade when they were losing a million people, and into Manhattan, just as prices there touched rock bottom, was a stroke of genius. Shrewd!

Shrewd also were Trump’s bombastic phrasings of his departures from

Republican orthodoxy on immigration and trade. Did a secret cabal of Republicans’ enemies put into his head the notion that making one outrageous statement after another could give him more airtime than the other 16 Republican candidates put together? If so, it worked.

The fact is that there was no more compelling reason for Trump to run than there was in 2000 or 2008. The word around Palm Beach is that he expected his campaign to be a lark and to add value to the Trump brand.

But to his surprise, the dog caught the car.

The vehicle could end up in the ditch. The Republican Party may face more problems if Trump wins than if he loses. In the latter case it adapts to its gains among the less educated and losses among the highly educated – a process ongoing for two decades.

If he wins he’d be called on to deliver on his promises on trade and immigration. A president can impose tariffs – and provoke a financial crisis.

A president can build a border wall and

Congress can require employers to use e-Verify. Experience with similar measures in Arizona suggests the effects will be real, but marginal. Frustrating!

One of the mysteries of the campaign, unexplored by the reliably anti-Republican but not reliably pro-Democratic mainstream media, is why Trump, who turned 70 in June, and Clinton, who turns 69 next month, decided to run at their ages. As Trump has noted, he could have had a comfortable life otherwise; so could Clinton.

The track record of presidents elected at about that age is mixed. Ronald Reagan showed that a septuagenarian, even after suffering a serious gunshot wound, could be an effective president.

The example of William Henry Harrison, who took office at 68 and died a month later, is less encouraging.

Clinton’s candidacy essentially squelched the chances of a generation of younger Democrats, who might have advanced more serious future-oriented policies than the unachievable promises of free health care and free college that she copied from the 74-year-old socialist Bernie Sanders. No other Democrat would be toting the barrage of a private email system and a pay-for-play operation with her or his family foundation.

If it’s true, as many political observers think and as primary season polls

suggested, that a Marco Rubio or a Ted Cruz would be leading Clinton in polls now by something like 50 percent to 43 percent, it’s equally plausible that an Amy Klobuchar or a Sherrod Brown (to name two plausible Democrats) would be leading Rubio or Cruz and with significantly more than Clinton’s current 42 percent. Clinton, like Trump, has her enthusiasts (most over 50 in both cases), but young women are clearly not enraptured by the notion of a female president.

And while Clinton must be haunted by the thought that she was almost elected president at age 60 and would have been in the White House the past eight years, that doesn’t mean she had to run again. Al Gore has led a lucrative and comfortable life after coming closer than she did. So did Samuel J. Tilden after the 1876 election was stolen from him.

The real question about this campaign, which may not be resolved until years after the election, may be which secret cabal of a party’s enemies has inflicted more damage on its target.

Peña Nieto in an impossible bind once Trump accepted. After news broke of Trump’s surprising plans to visit Mexico – just before his Phoenix immigration speech, no less – Mexican social media quickly condemned the historically unpopular president, questioning his judgment, political acumen and even his dignity.

The Mexican president’s controversial generosity, an ill-timed and unnecessary act of diplomatic hospitality, could only be reciprocated with a public apology from Trump, an unlikely outcome if there ever was one. Instead, Peña Nieto was left with something his administration has puzzlingly resisted from the beginning of Trump’s political ascendance: He fact-checked the Republican candidate on the benefits of the bilateral relationship and the contributions of Mexican Americans in the United States. But Peña Nieto stopped well short of demanding an apology or setting the record straight over who would pay for Trump’s wall. His promises to “defend” Mexicans rang empty when he stood silently as Trump quickly noted construction bills would be discussed in future meetings.

Peña Nieto intervened once during the question and answer session – but only to offer a bizarre rationale for Trump’s previous outbursts against Mexicans, what Peña Nieto called “misunderstandings.” “Mexican people have been hurt by the comments that have been made,” said Peña Nieto, who then, bewilderingly, immediately excused Trump: “I am sure that his genuine interest has been to build a relationship that will improve both of our societies.” Trump smiled, his bullying having received a presidential seal of approval.

A few hours later, Peña Nieto took to Twitter to clarify his position on the border wall. “In the beginning of my conversation with Donald Trump, I explained that Mexico would not pay for the wall,” Peña Nieto wrote.

On his way to Arizona by then, Trump didn’t reply. He had already had the last word, back in Mexico.

Sitton, Long could accelerate Bears’ rebuild Biggest weakness only 48 hours ago looks dramatically improved

LAKE FOREST – Heading into the season, the Bears clearly are still a rebuilding team that looks to be a notch below the legitimate playoff contenders. But with only one veteran signing and some promising medical news over the holiday weekend, general manager Ryan Pace and Co. appear to have seriously accelerated their construction project.

There still are significant questions to be answered in the secondary, at tight end, running back, with a pass rush missing linebacker Pernell McPhee and placekicker, but the Bears’ most glaring weakness before Labor Day was on the offensive line.

With the arrival of Pro Bowler Josh Sitton, from Green Bay of all places, and the return to practice of Kyle Long, three of the five spots on that line are dramatically better.

Why Sitton?

“First of all, the skins are on the wall,” Pace explained on Monday. “A three-time Pro Bowler, he’s extremely strong and powerful in the run game and pass pro. He’s one of those guys that just make it look easy – you never see him stressed or exposed.

“He’s in good position, smart, very intelligent player, and that shows up when you meet with him and all the

Long, who knows more than a little about being a Pro Bowl guard, agrees with his GM. “It’s an exciting time,” Long said.

“Obviously, bringing in a guy like Josh, who has done it for so long ... .

At the beginning of the year, when I think about guys I’ve got to beat out to be the guy, No. 71 is usually one of the two of three guys that I circle as guys I have to beat. Now he is on our team.”

The news of Sitton’s arrival also was celebrated with Long’s return to practice after missing two weeks with a bum shoulder.

Although his status for the Texans on Sunday and beyond still is uncertain, when Long is healthy, he, Sitton, Baltimore’s Marshal Yanda, Oakland’s Kelechi Osemele, Dallas’ Zack Martin and Pittsburgh’s David DeCastro usually are the top candidates in discussions of the best guard in the NFL. Before this weekend, the Bears’ starting guards were rookie Cody Whitehair and career journeyman Ted Larsen.

Although Whitehair was the top guard prospect in this year’s draft, the flip to Long and Sitton is like trading in your Ford Taurus for a Maserati.

Even better it seems, Whitehair now is destined to take over the starting center spot from Larsen and undrafted free-agent Cornelius Edison, who was waived over the weekend and re-signed Monday to the practice squad.

That move has not yet been confirmed, but coach John Fox told us Monday, “I think maybe right now looking at it I think it’s his best position.

“Unfortunately, prior to the acquisition of Josh (Sitton), we weren’t real fluid to put him there a whole lot, but he has had reps.”

There still are questions to be answered, as Bobby Massie and Charles Leno are anything but sure things at right and left tackle, respectively, but with two of the best guards in the game in the middle, Fox’s run-first offense is looking a lot scarier, and quarterback Jay Cutler should face little pressure up the middle in the pocket.

It is also worth noting that at 30, Sitton is the Bears’ elder statesment on the line. With Long at 27 and Leno, Massie, Whitehair and the injured Hroniss Grasu all 26 or younger, this group could be together for a while.

Fox professed pleasure with Grasu’s development at center before he tore his ACL, and many – including yours truly – still believe Long’s best position could be left tackle.

Should the Leno experiment fail and Grasu make a healthy return next year, with Sitton on board, the Bears could move Long out to Cutler’s blindside and Whitehair to guard.

That would render Fox’s ground game ambidextrous – how’d you like to run left behind Long and Sitton or right behind Whitehair and the massive Massie?

Sitton is just one man, but assuming the Packers don’t have knowledge on Sitton the Bears lack, his arrival is huge – both literally and figuratively.

Starters Long, Porter, Fuller return to practice

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com LAKE FOREST – The Bears are as healthy as they have been since the start of training camp, and it has come at the perfect time.

With six days to go before the season opener against the Texans, offensive guard Kyle Long, defensive backs Tracy Porter, Kyle Fuller, Bryce Callahan and Deon Bush and receiver Deonte Thompson all participated in the portion of practice open to the media.

Coach John Fox didn’t have to give out an injury report Monday, so we’ll learn more about those players’ statuses for Week 1 after Wednesday’s practice, but the team’s top two corners seem ready to return.

“Yeah, no question,” Porter said when asked whether he would play

Sunday. The veteran corner has been out since suffering a concussion Aug. 27 against the Chiefs.

“I remember the hit,” Porter said of the collision with teammate Harold Jones-Quartey. “I remember what happened. I remembered the formation. The tight end ran a skinny post. The thing is, I saw Harold coming in and I tried to adjust myself, but I didn’t do it quick enough.”

Tracy Porter Fuller, who has been out after a knee scope, said he has a “sense of relief” after trying to play through the pain during training camp and that it’s his goal to be playing Sunday.

Facing a Texans receiving corps that includes DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller, it’s paramount for the

Bears to be healthy at corner.

“When you have all of your ammunition heading into the season, that’s what you need,” Porter said. “You need all of your guys full-go and ready to go.

We seem to have that. We’re just looking forward to playing on Sunday.”

Long has been out since Aug. 20 with a shoulder injury.

“It’s been weird sitting out, but I haven’t had a smile on my face as big as when I went out there and was in practice today,” Long said. “Just trying to get as healthy as I can be. When I’m ready, I’ll go. But our training staff and our coaches have done a great job not rushing me back into anything.”

Pace on McPhee: Bears general manager Ryan Pace addressed the decision to place linebacker Pernell McPhee on the physically-unable-to-perform list to start the regular season.

“With the PUP decision with Pernell, let’s take a moment right now and honestly see where he’s at, get all our doctors’ opinions and do what’s best for him and what’s best for the club,” he said. “This delays it six weeks and allows him to continue to train. And you guys have seen him out there working every day. He’s working really hard. I still feel good about the path he’s on, but right now there’s not necessarily as much of a rush as there will be after Week 6.”

Roster update: The Bears oddly swapped long snappers, bringing back Patrick Scales, who they cut Saturday, and releasing Aaron Brewer. Scales snapped for the final five games of last season. The team also cut guard Amini Silatolu and added former Eagles, Cardinals and USC quarterback Matt Barkley to the practice squad.

Bench depth key to win, worth watching toward playoffs

That roster depth could create a numbers issue when playoff rosters are set and lefty bench bats such as Coghlan, Tommy La Stella (1-for-3 with a walk from the leadoff spot) and maybe even catcher Miguel Montero on a bubble.

Montero, who’s 7-for-16 over the past two weeks with the two-out double that led to that go-ahead run Monday, is starting to heat up after a season-long slump and sporadic playing time.

Maddon said he expects matchups to play a large role in how the roster is set for the playoffs.

“It can vary from round to round,” Maddon said.

Earlier in the season team president Theo Epstein described the 2014 14thround draft pick from Mercer University as “a magician with a bat in his hand,”

whose next step is developing more gap power.

Young, 23, had 25 doubles and four homers in 126 games.

Cubs rookie Willson Contreras won the Southern League batting title last year.

Notes: Maddon said the club has plotted as many as five or six chances for setup man Pedro Strop to pitch before the playoffs start, barring another setback. Strop, who has been on the DL since Aug. 11 because of a knee injury, suffered a groin injury last week during rehab work.

• Maddon made no secret over the weekend of his disdain for day games, in particular the especially early games, such as Monday’s 12:10 p.m. games. Then he saw the Mets went from a night game in New York on Sunday to a 1:10 start in Cincinnati on Monday. “Once I saw that, I stopped complaining,” Maddon said.

MILWAUKEE – As the Cubs try to amuse themselves against the likes of the Brewers, Reds and Astros these next few weeks on their scenic drive toward October, some of the few items of note – and possible intrigue – played out again Monday in the form of pitcher Kyle Hendricks.

For the fourth time in barely two months, the Cubs’ so-called fifth starter made a start the day after a bullpen-ravaging marathon, and for the fourth time got that game to the seventh inning and earned the victory, this time a 7-2 decision over the Brewers at Miller Park.

It may not sound like the stuff of tallbuildings-in-a-single-bound, but add it to the already impressive – and growing – resume, and Hendricks’ case gets just that much stronger in a National League Cy Young Award that’s starting to look like it could be his to lose.

That is, if he can keep defending winner Jake Arrieta at bay, and if their teammate, Jon Lester, doesn’t overtake both to win it.

“The way he’s been pitching, I don’t see anyone pitching as good as he’s been,” said catcher Miguel Montero, whose two-hit day included a two-out double in the seventh that started the go-ahead rally.

“He probably doesn’t have as many innings as the other guys [in the race], but that’s not his fault, put it that way,” Montero added, comparing the

Hendricks mostly stayed out of trouble, struck out Cubs killer Kirk Nieuwenhuis in a 1-1 game with runners at second and third to end the sixth, and along the way lowered his major-league-leading ERA to 2.07.

His 14th win puts him two short of Arrieta for the league lead, and he should have four more starts to make his Cy Young case – even with lefty Mike Montgomery scheduled for at least two more starts as a sixth starter.

Maddon said his Cy Young candidates are assured of getting their full complement of starts the rest of the season despite the extra starter.

Not that Hendricks or anyone else in the clubhouse is salivating over the final 25 regular-season games, with a 16½-game lead in the National League Central and a magic number for clinching that could be in single digits by midweek.

“Almost opposite,” Hendricks said.

“It’s at the point where we’re ready to go for the next level. These ballgames are still big for us. Everybody’s playing well, so it’s a lot of fun coming to the ballpark every day. We know where we’re trying to go. It’s just getting through this last month will be good.”

A lot remains at stake no matter how quickly they clinch. Hendricks got an up-close look at the Cy Young race with the Giants’ Madison Bumgarner and Johnny Cueto pitching well against the Cubs on Saturday and Sunday.

“That was a fun series, just having that playoff atmosphere almost,” Hendricks said of the Giants series. “But

No all-Williams Open rematch Venus out; Serena gets No. 308

NEW YORK – Venus Williams went from down and out to a point from victory, then back again. In the end, she couldn’t quite get past a woman a dozen years younger and never before at this stage of a Grand Slam tournament.

Williams failed to convert a match point and lost 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) to 10th-seeded Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic in the fourth round of the U.S. Open on Monday, despite vociferous support from the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd down the stretch.

“I really played the perfect point there,” the sixth-seeded Williams said about her chance to end things while up 5-4 in the third set, and Pliskova serving at 30-40, “and she managed to stay alive.”

At 36, Williams would have been the oldest woman to reach the quarterfinals at any major since Martina Navratilova was 37 at Wimbledon in 1994.

Williams made it that far at Flushing Meadows a year ago, before losing to her younger sister Serena. This time, they had been on course for an all-in-the-family showdown in the semifinals; Serena followed Venus in Ashe and beat Yaroslava Shvedova 6-2, 6-3 in the fourth round for her 308th Grand Slam match victory, breaking a tie with Roger Federer for most in the Open era, which dates to 1968.

Pliskova managed, just barely, to make it to her first Grand Slam quarterfinal at age 24. Until this tournament, she never had been past the third round in 17 appearances at majors.

“I was prepared that I’m going to play Venus – it’s going to be tough, because all the people are cheering for her,” said Pliskova, who leads the tour in aces in 2016 and produced eight in this match.

It took her awhile to finish off this one, despite going up an early break in the third set and leading 4-2. Just as it seemed she would run away with it, Williams turned things around enough to go up 5-4 and hold a match point. But Plis-

Then Pliskova broke to lead 6-5 and served for the match, getting three chances to close it at 40love. After Pliskova frittered away one with a double-fault, Williams

steeled herself and stepped up, smacking a volley winner, crosscourt backhand winner and two forehand winners to break back for 6-all.

“To be honest,” Pliskova said, “it was really difficult ... when I lost my serve.”

Somehow, though, she pulled herself together enough to get through the tiebreaker as Williams faltered.

“In the ’breaker, I went for a little bit more,” Williams said, “but I didn’t put the ball in enough.”

Now Pliskova will face No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska or Ana Konjuh.

Also reaching the quarterfinals with a victory Monday was 2014 French Open runner-up Simona Halep, who eliminated No. 11 Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2, 7-5. Now it’s 2014 French Open runner-up Halep’s turn to try to deal with the serve of Serena Williams, who reached a tournament-best 126 mph, delivered 11 aces and won 28 of 30 first-serve points against Shvedova.

In men’s action, 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro became the lowest-ranked man in the U.S. Open quarterfinals in 25 years, advancing when No. 8 seed Dominic Thiem stopped in the second set because of an injured right knee.

Del Potro missed 2½ years’ worth

of major tournaments because of a trio of operations on his left wrist, so he’s ranked only 142nd. Jimmy Connors was 174th when he made a stirring run to the semifinals in New York at age 39 in 1991.

The 2012 title winner at Flushing Meadows, Andy Murray, eased into the quarterfinals for the 22nd time in his past 23 majors, beating No. 22 Grigor Dimitrov 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 at night. Murray now faces 2014 runner-up Kei Nishikori, who advanced by beating No. 21 Ivo Karlovic 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (4). Murray defeated Nishikori in the semifinals of the Rio Olympics last month en route to an unprecedented second consecutive singles gold medal.

Del Potro has been playing as well as ever lately, winning the silver in Rio and picking up recent victories over Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka.

In the quarterfinals, del Potro’s opponent will be No. 3 Wawrinka, a 6-4, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-3 winner against Illya Marchenko.

“He will be the favorite to win in that match,” said del Potro, who beat Wawrinka at Wimbledon.

“But,” del Potro added, “anything can happen in this event for me. I got the power from the crowd in every match.”

NASCAR needs a spurt of new CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Jeff Gordon is mostly retired and Tony Stewart is almost out the door. Now Dale Earnhardt Jr. is sidelined for the rest of the year, exposing NASCAR’s glaring need for new stars to captivate the audience.

The three IN THE big names who have moved PITS the needle Jenna for NASCAR Fryer the past two decades have a combined seven championships, 168 career Cup wins and five Daytona 500 victories. More important, they are the household names for NASCAR, the ones who move the needle and make people pay attention.

But Gordon called last year his last, only to be called back to the race car in late July when a concussion knocked Earnhardt out for the season. Stewart, meanwhile, has just 13 races left in his NASCAR driving career.

He was in vintage form Sunday night at Darlington Raceway, where he seemed to intentionally wreck Brian Scott in a move that earned him a post-race sit-down with NASCAR’s

Continued from page 20 Kyle Larson is a week removed from his first Cup victory, a win that earned him a berth in NASCAR’s playoffs, and rookie Chase Elliott is a week away from securing his spot in the 10-race championship series.

Austin Dillon could also make the Chase for the championship in next week’s regular-season finale, as could Chris Buescher, last year’s Xfinity Series champion who used a win at rain-shortened Pocono to slide into title contention.

Ryan Blaney won’t make the Chase, but the 22-year-old has been competitive and part of a new generation of drivers that NASCAR will have to rely upon once its superstars are in street clothes.

The problem, though, is that none of these new faces are the complete package.

They seem fun on Snapchat and other forms of social media, but put them in a firesuit with a live television camera and all the sparkle is sucked right out of their personalities.

There are plenty of drivers with the talent of Erik Jones, William Byron or Daniel Suarez, but if they can’t make a fan base fall in love with them, then what does it matter?

Labor Day weekend has been celebrated the last two years in NASCAR as a throwback to its earlier days, when the racing was rougher and the men were tougher and drivers didn’t hide from fans or media in million-dollar motorhomes. They didn’t complain about packed schedules, crowded garages or too many interview requests.

They called everything like it was and fear of sponsor backlash didn’t stifle many personalities.

So it was fitting to see Smoke mete out his own justice on Sunday, and to hear Kevin Harvick succinctly blast his crew after yet another race was lost in the pits. Across the border, on a road course in Canada, two teenagers waged a furious drag race to the checkered flag with a bid in NASCAR’s playoffs on the line for Cole Custer.

But John Hunter Nemechek didn’t care, bumped Custer’s Truck from behind, then the two bounced off each other’s doors

as their trucks hurtled through the grass and to the finish line. As if that old-school finish wasn’t wonderful enough for every NASCAR fan who wistfully remembers the good ol’ days, Custer used a running start to leap into the air and knock Nemechek to the ground as Nemechek tried to collect the checkered flag.

Now watch, Custer will be punished by NASCAR for his post-race WWE impersonation, and future displays of raw emotion from young drivers will be throttled. It’s not that NASCAR needs the drama, the theatrics, the fisticuffs, to be successful. It’s just that people need a reason to care, and listening to a driver reel off a list of sponsors between praising downforce and tire wear isn’t the sexiest sell.

NASCAR needs new superstars, and NASCAR needs them to be engaging, entertaining and excited to be part of the show. Somehow, that message needs to be conveyed to these young drivers before the fan base leaves with Gordon, Stewart and all the other stars from that romantic time when NASCAR was fun.

Sale strong as fading Sox fall to Tigers in 11th

CHICAGO – Chris Sale isn’t enjoying the stretch run despite once again being one of baseball’s top pitchers.

“It’s hard to look at stuff like that when we’ve been going through what we’ve been going through,” the White Sox left-hander said. “I don’t really get too far into personal stats. Somebody’s got really bad stats on a World Series winning team, I’ll trade with him.”

Justin Upton hit a three-run home run in the 11th inning to lift the Detroit Tigers to a 5-3 victory on Monday and their 11th win in 14 games. The Sox have dropped six of eight and matched a season-low at seven games under .500.

Miguel Cabrera homered twice and had four hits off Sale, and Justin Verlander struck out 11 in seven innings as the Tigers stayed tied with Baltimore for the second AL wild card.

Chris Beck (1-1) issued consecutive two-out walks to Victor Martinez and J.D. Martinez before Upton crushed a 1-2 fastball to right for his 21st home run. It was his second game-winning homer in two days after connecting in the eighth inning Sunday against Kansas City.

“That’s what you live for, man,” Upton said. “That’s what you play the game for, the big moment when you can help your team out. I’ve just happened to come through the last couple

days.”

Cabrera became the fourth player to reach 300 homers with the Tigers with a liner to right in the first. He secured his fifth multihomer game of the season with a drive to left-center in the third, his 31st of the season.

Cabrera also singled and doubled for his sixth four-hit game of the season. He had all but two of the hits allowed by Sale, who struck out eight and walked none in eight innings.

“He’s still one of the best hitters on the planet,” Detroit manager Brad Ausmus said. “He’s probably one of the most elite right-hand hitters in the history of the game. He continues to hit. He’s got a tremendous, mechanically-sound swing and he’s extremely strong.”

Alex Wilson (2-0) gave up one hit in the 10th and Francisco Rodriguez gave up a run in the 11th before securing his 39th save. He moved past John Franco for fourth on the career saves list with 425.

Verlander allowed eight hits and saw his chance for a 15th win dashed when former Tigers catcher Alex Avila tied it with a solo homer in the seventh.

It marked the second Verlander-Sale matchup in a week. Neither ace factored in the decision in Detroit’s 3-2 win Wednesday, either. The Sox again failed to support Sale and fell to 2-8 in his last 10 starts.

The Sox also are likely headed to their fourth-straight losing season.

‘Feel good’ foods reduce anxiety Dear Dr. K: I suffer from anxiety but would rather not take medication. I already exercise and practice relaxation therapy.

Could dietary changes help further quell my worries?

Dear Reader: To help answer your question, I turned to my colleague Dr. Uma Naidoo. She is a psychiatrist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital and a professional chef. She noted the relationship between food, mood and anxiety is garnering more and more attention.

When thinking about dietary strategies to help relieve anxiety, start with the basics. That means eating a balanced diet, drinking enough water, and limiting or avoiding alcohol and caffeine.

But there’s a lot more. Many other dietary considerations also can help relieve anxiety. For example, complex carbohydrates are metabolized more slowly and therefore help maintain a more even blood sugar level.

Why is that important? When blood sugar levels swing from high to low, the heart begins to beat faster and more forcefully.

The hands can start trembling. People start to sweat. All these physical changes often produce anxiety. Anxiety, in turn, makes all of these changes more prominent – leading to more anxiety, and a vicious circle.

So, maintaining a more even blood sugar level creates a calmer feeling. The takehome? Choose whole grains, vegetables and fruits over highly refined or processed foods to help keep blood sugar – and mood – more stable.

When you eat also is important. Don’t skip meals. Doing so may result in a drop in blood sugar that causes you to feel jittery, worsening underlying anxiety.

Specific foods and nutrients can reduce anxiety. They spur the release of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopa-

These “feel good” foods are a safe and easy first step in managing anxiety. They include: • Foods naturally rich in magnesium, including spinach, Swiss chard, legumes, nuts, seeds and whole grains.

• Foods rich in zinc, such as oysters, cashews, liver, beef and egg yolks.

• Foods, like fatty fish, that contain omega-3 fatty acid.

• Foods rich in B vitamins, such as avocado and almonds.

Anxiety also may be linked with lower levels of antioxidants in the body. It stands to reason, then, that enhancing your diet with foods rich in antioxidants may help ease the symptoms of anxiety. Foods containing high levels of antioxidants include: • Beans: dried small red, pinto, black, red kidney • Fruits: apples, prunes, sweet cherries, plums, black plums • Berries: blackberries, strawberries, cranberries, raspberries, blueberries • Nuts: walnuts, pecans • Vegetables: artichokes, kale, spinach, beets, broccoli • Spices: turmeric and ginger.

Dear Abby: I DEAR ABBY have been married to my soul Jeanne mate for 25 years.

Phillips We get along great – she’s my best friend and a good mother to our three kids.

(She takes care of my mom who lives with us, too.) The only problem is, she loves to sleep.

She will do anything for us except wake up a few hours early without being mad at the world.

She gets our kids off to school with no problem, but then returns to bed. I run a small construction company and need someone to answer the phones and do secretary stuff. Our books are a mess, the house is decent, but she won’t let me hire a part-time secretary.

She gets up at noon and spends the rest of the day “catching up.” It’s driving a wedge in our marriage. My friends and their wives do things together on weekends, but not mine. She sleeps until 2 or 3 p.m. on the weekends.

I work a lot of Saturdays, and when I go to customers’ homes and see the wife outside gardening, it breaks my heart. I have threatened to leave, and she works on it for a couple of days and then falls back into the same old habits.

Help. – Hurting Husband In California Dear Husband: Not everyone requires the same amount of sleep to function. Some folks may be fine with five hours, but others need eight, nine or even 10. If your wife needs more than that, there may be an underlying problem of some kind she should discuss with her doctor.

In marriage, there needs to be compromise.

If you are experiencing stress because you don’t have enough help in your business, then you need to hire someone because your wife already is doing all she can taking care of three kids and your mother. And you shouldn’t need her permission.

Dear Abby: At a pool party recently, I complimented another woman on her “good figure” (she was wearing a bikini and looked great in it), but I was told later by a different woman who had been there how “hurtful” my compliment had been to everyone else present because I complimented only the bikini-wearing woman. I felt coerced into apologizing to the second woman for not offering a compliment of some kind to everyone else at the party – which seems artificial and unnecessary (actually stupid) to me.

The woman looking for the apology left me feeling steamed, and now I’m thinking maybe I apologized for something I didn’t need to. Is it true you shouldn’t compliment one person if you can’t manage to do the same for everyone else present? – Pool Party Compliment Dear P.P.C.: No, it’s not. I have never heard of that rule of etiquette. Following her logic, you would be compelled to compliment every male at an event if you told one the tie or shirt he was wearing was nice. I suspect the woman was less hurt than jealous, and I doubt the other women at the pool party were paying much attention to what you said.

A harder problem can be knowing which signal partner would like to receive: attitude, count or suit-preference.

How should the defense have gone?

In the auction, North used the Unusual No-trump to show at least 5-5 in the minors. When South sensibly settled for three diamonds, East competed with three spades, arguing afterward that the Law of Total Tricks says to compete to the three-level with a nine-card fit. However, the prevailing vulnerability and his balanced pattern should have suggested caution. Three spades doubled could have gone down two, minus 500. But three spades worked in theory when South went too high.

West led the club ace, hoping to cash the first four tricks. Since the club queen was on the board, East correctly gave count by playing his two -- lowest from an odd number.

West, judging that his partner would have bid three spades on round one with a singleton club, now cashed the spade ace. This denied the king, because you should lead king from ace-king after trick one. East encouraged with his four, but that looked low to West. When he took the club king and shifted to a heart.

South claimed.

East should not have been parsimonious; he should have signaled with his spade nine, playing as high as possible.
