County unemployment rate falls to 5.1 percent DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – DeKalb County’s unemployment rate stood at 5.1 percent last month, down from 6 percent in July 2015, according to preliminary figures released by the Illinois Department of Employment Security and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The jobless rate in the city of DeKalb was 5.5 percent in July, down from 6.6 percent during the same month in 2015. The unemployment rate identifies those who are out of work and looking for work. It is not tied to collecting unemployment insurance benefits.

Statewide, 12 of Illinois’ metropolitan areas had decreases in the over-the-year unemployment rate and eight of the metro areas had increases, according to a news release from IDES. “Our job growth rate is still half that of the rest of the country,” IDES Director Jeff Mays said in a statement. “Most of our job growth is concentrated primarily in the northeast corner of the state, while downstate job growth continues to lag.”

Eastern gorilla gets added to critically endangered list

HONOLULU – The world’s largest living primate has been listed as critically endangered, making four of the six great ape species only one step away from extinction, according to a report released Sunday at the World Conservation Congress in Hawaii.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature, cited illegal hunting in downgrading the status of the eastern gorilla on its Red List of Endangered Species.

The list contains more than 80,000 species, and almost 24,000 of those are threatened with extinction.

“To see the eastern gorilla – one of our closest cousins – slide toward extinction is truly distressing,” Inger Andersen, IUCN director general, said in a statement. “Conservation action does work and we have increasing evi-

increases in Elgin (2.1 percent, 5,300), Rockford (1.9 percent, 2,900) and Lake-Kenosha (1.6 percent, 6,800). Total nonfarm jobs in the Chicago-Naperville-Arlington Heights Metro Division increased 1.2 percent, or 44,900.

Illinois businesses lost jobs in five metro areas including Carbondale-Marion (minus-2.5 percent, minus-1,400), the Quad Cities (minus-2.3 percent, minus-4,200), and Decatur (minus-1.5 percent, minus-800).

Statewide, the jobless rate was 5.6 percent last month, compared with 12.2 percent at its peak in this economic cycle in January 2010.

Nationally, the not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.1 percent last month and 10.6 percent in January 2010 at its peak, according to IDES.

The organization said an estimated 5,000 eastern gorillas remain in the wild, a decline of about 70 percent over the past 20 years.

Of all the great ape species – the eastern gorilla, western gorilla, Bornean orangutan, Sumatran orangutan, chimpanzee and bonobo – only the chimpanzee and bonobo are not considered critically endangered. But they are listed as endangered.

For the gorillas of the Congo, where the majority of the population lives, conservation will be a struggle because of political instability, said primatologist Russell Mittermeier, executive vice chairman of the Conservation International environmental group and chairman of IUCN’s primates specialist group.

Rauner’s agenda has been stymied in first 2 years – would it work anyway?

McHenry County Board vote last year to approve a symbolic resolution to support Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s “Turnaround Agenda” became a major legal weight around the board’s neck.

Local labor unions that call Rauner’s support for right-to-work laws an assault on the working class protested the vote, and one union took the County Board to court, alleging that board members who met with Rauner before the vote violated the Open Meetings Act. While the County Board settled the lawsuit and revoked its symbolic resolution, another headache continued in the form of a state investigation, sparked by that very same union, into whether board members work enough to qualify for their pensions.

Of all the facets to the agenda on which Rauner ran in 2014, the ones seeking to curtail collective bargaining and reform prevailing wage laws are by far the most contentious, especially in a state like Illinois where public-sector unions wield tremendous political clout.

That clout, and the Democratic Party holding supermajorities in both houses of the General Assembly, make these proposed changes problematic at best.

Politics aside, would these proposals work and provide tax relief, and do they have a chance of approval? The answer, of course, depends on whom you ask.

What it means

Rauner’s proposal would allow for the creation of right-to-work laws at the local level through “employee empowerment zones” that would give workers – public sector, private or both – the right to voluntarily join or refrain from joining a union, and would forbid requiring joining or paying union-related dues as a condition for employment. The zones either could be approved by the local government or by referendum. It also would allow local governments to exclude a number of topics from collective bargaining.

Another proposal would repeal the state’s prevailing wage law, a minimum hourly wage set by the Illinois Department of Labor, based on trade,

To Anders Lindall, spokesman for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31, Rauner’s initiatives aren’t about helping taxpayers, but gutting organized labor and lowering wages.

The council represents about 75,000 employees statewide.

“Having a voice at work through their union allows public service workers at the city and county level to advocate for enough resources to serve their community, to have a voice to keep political interference out of public service, and to have the tools they need to do their jobs, whether it’s responding to emergencies, protecting public health and safety, or teaching kids. If you’re talking about silencing the voices of public service workers in these helping professions, that is what’s at stake,” Lindall said.

Others see it differently. Michael Lucci, vice president of policy for the

conservative-leaning Illinois Policy Institute, said that data conclude that right-to-work laws have increased wages in the three neighboring states – Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan – that have implemented it. About half the states in the union have right-towork laws.

“The normal criticism of right-towork says, ‘If you adopt right-to-work, then boom, wages just fall.’ There’s absolutely no evidence of that, and in particular, in the three states around us that have enacted right-to-work, personal income increased faster than in Illinois,” Lucci said.

Besides the long shot that a Democratic legislature would even entertain the idea, there are legal roadblocks. Attorney General Lisa Madigan ruled that federal labor law allows only states and not local governments to enact such policies. The Lincolnshire Village Board created a right-to-work zone anyway and was promptly sued by a number of unions.

The lawsuits are still ongoing – the

village is getting free legal representation from a law firm funded by the Illinois Policy Institute.

Many of the 24 members of the McHenry County Board, all Republicans, have cited both union contracts and prevailing wage as roadblocks when it comes to cutting costs and reducing the overall budget. The board and its associated bodies, a sliver of the 7,000 units of local government in Illinois, make up about 10 percent of a resident’s property tax bill.

More than half of county government’s workforce, which has steadily decreased since the Great Recession, is unionized through 10 bargaining units. Besides giving those employees benefits and raises, board members give their non-unionized workers a level of parity, lest they be persuaded to organize as well. In Illinois, public employees are automatically unionized if a majority of workers in an office fill out the authorization forms, a process known as card check.

As for prevailing wage, board members allege that it jacks up the cost to taxpayers for projects. For the past three years, the County Board has symbolically voted against accepting the annual prevailing wage list mandated by the state. But while rejecting the schedule carries no penalty, willingly paying workers less than prevailing wage carries a Class A misdemeanor and fines – under the law, the elected officials face the charge, while the body, meaning the taxpayers, pay the fine.

Prevailing wage is no joke, said County Board member Michael Walkup, who is the Republican candidate for board chairman. During the April 2015 debate about supporting the Turnaround Agenda, Walkup brought up a project during his time on the Crystal Lake Park District Board to build a brick restroom at Veterans Acres Park that ended up costing $250,000. To put it in perspective, Walkup said, the quote he got to rebuild his entire home after a fire came in about the same.

“Prevailing wage probably doubles your labor costs. A true prevailing wage would be what the overall price is in the marketplace when you consider everything, but we’re not allowed to consider everybody – we only can compare union scale,” said Walkup, R-Crystal Lake.

World Robot Olympiad U.S. comes to NIU Convocation Center

news@daily-chronicle.com Although she admits that building robots can be frustrating, 11-year-old Amber Rinker loves using her imagination to build and program a robot to accomplish a goal.

The Aurora resident’s robotics team, Star Darlings, was one of 43 teams from across the country to compete at the World Robot Olympiad U.S., which was held Sunday at the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center.

“It’s the hardest fun I’ve ever had,” Amber said. “The competition is really hard and our program has to be almost perfect. But the building and programming are fun.”

This is the third time the WRO has been held in the U.S., and the first time the WRO has been held at NIU. The winner from each of the three divisions, elementary, junior high and senior high, will travel to India in November to compete in the world competition. Children and teens from across the country had 21/2 hours to build a robot and program it so it completeed a specific challenge.

Each of the divisions had different challenges.

Pettee Guerrero, NIU Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Outreach associate, was instrumental in bringing the competition with NIU. She said the organizers approached her and asked to come to DeKalb, and she was more than happy to have NIU host the event.

“This helps to put NIU on the map. We want to get kids involved in STEM at an early age,” she said.

“The kids have been working really hard today,” Guerrero said. “This gives them hands-on experience with team-work and other skills that they don’t necessarily get in school. We’d love to get DeKalb County students involved with this competition.”

William Wong, WRO USA national organizer and an Aurora resident, wanted to come to NIU because the university has a big STEM outreach program, which directly relates to robotics competition.

Abdul Anad Barkat, 11, described the competition as “stressful,” but said he still loves to work with robots because there are so many things they can do.

“I love the competition because it has an engineering part to it because you build the robot and then program it,” said the fifth-grader at White Eagle Elementary School in Naperville.

His brother and teammate, Aadil Barkat, 8, said he likes learning about robots because they are really useful.

“You can make a robot to clean your room, and you can even make a security system with it,” he said.

Jensie Coonradt, 10, of Naperville, won the national championship

as a fourth-grader last year. The fifth-grader at Wheatlands Elementary School said she loves the competitive element of robotics.

“I’ve done quite a few competitions, and I love all the problem-solving involved. I like doing puzzles and other things to challenge myself,” she said.

Rohan Satapathy, 11, said his favorite part of the competition is learning what the robot is supposed to do and then trying to get his to work properly.

“It’s fun when you get your robot to work, but we still have some kinks to work out,” he said about his team’s robot.

His teammate, Amogh Shetty, 11, said his favorite part is programming the robots to make them complete the challenge.

“I like to think of the design and then think of how the motors can manipulate the movement of the robots,” said the sixth-grader at John C. Dunham STEM Partnership School in Aurora.

Claus Christensen, secretary general of the World Robot Olympiad Association, hopes to get more American children involved in the WRO, and in robotics in general.

“This is hugely important for kids because it’s a wonderful platform to learning. Kids work with all kinds of disciplines and merge them together into these projects,” he said. “They learn to apply skills in math, programming and science into a fun and engaging competition. This competition is small in the U.S., but huge worldwide, so the U.S. is our focus market.”

With about two-thirds of General Assembly seats uncontested in this election, he does not see the current political calculus changing in a way that would favor either Rauner or House Speaker Michael Madigan by giving him enough of a cushion to override a gubernatorial veto and take the governor out of the equation entirely.

“I think they’re going to have to come to some agreement with the governor. I just don’t see a situation where the Democrats have either the numbers or the discipline to completely ignore the governor and think they

can override vetoes,” Yepsen said.

There are, of course, other aspects of the Turnaround Agenda, such as workers’ compensation and tort liability reform, a statewide property-tax freeze, term limits and redistricting reform.

But many of those are just as politically unpalatable to many General Assembly members. The Illinois Supreme Court last month slapped down a citizen initiative for a constitutional amendment to take the power to draw legislative districts away from lawmakers.

An outcome of this, Yepsen said, could be that the temporary budget deal that ended a yearlong budget impasse between Rauner and Democratic lawmakers expires, and turns out to be nothing more than an intermission.

“With all the spending and rhetoric, we could be right back in the same gridlocked position,” Yepsen said.

Same-day voter registration at issue in lawsuit

CHICAGO – A federal lawsuit has raised questions about whether Illinois’ new Election Day voter registration rules are constitutional, a situation that could complicate how polling sites are run in November.

Illinois tested same-day registration in the 2014 governor’s race, with all election authorities required to offer it in at least one location. It was popular, with long lines on Election Night, particularly in Chicago. When lawmakers made same-day registration permanent the next year, they expanded it, ordering highly populated areas to make it available at all polls.

That change is at the heart of a federal lawsuit brought by Republicans, who argue it is an unfair and unequal system because voters in less populated and GOP-leaning areas don’t have equal access. They’re asking a judge to end all precinct-level Election Day registration, which would affect voters in 21 of 102 counties and five cities: Chicago, Aurora, Rockford, Bloomington and East St. Louis.

“It seemed obviously unfair to skew election results in this way,” said Jacob Huebert, an attorney with an organization representing a north-cen-

Off-duty officer grazed by bullet on Chicago street

CHICAGO – Authorities said a Chicago police officer is in good condition after being grazed by a bullet after work.

Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the officer was shot at from a car around 5 a.m.

Sunday.

The officer had finished his overnight shift and was driving when he noticed another vehicle speeding up behind him. The officer slowed to let the vehicle pass. The vehicle instead pulled alongside the officer’s car.

Olympic medalist Ryan Held thanks Springfield backers

SPRINGFIELD – Olympic gold medalist Ryan Held has returned to the central Illinois YMCA where he got his start as a swimmer.

The State Journal-Register in Springfield reported that the 21-year-old Held got a warm welcome Saturday at the Springfield YMCA. More than 500 fans cheered Held celebrating his win last month at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Held wore his gold medal and

His tearful response during the medal ceremony was a memorable moment. Held said Saturday he was thinking of all the people who had supported him and that the symbolism of the American flag added to his emotions.

University of Illinois increasing salaries to avoid overtime

URBANA – The University of Illinois will spend $3 million in salary increases for about 400 postdoctoral research associates to avoid overtime charges the school otherwise would pay under a new federal rule.

The Illinois Policy Institute’s legal arm, the Liberty Justice Center, is arguing the lawsuit. First-term Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s foundation has donated to the group, and some in his administration previously worked there. Rauner’s spokeswoman didn’t return a request for comment.

Law professor Ann Lousin at John Marshall Law School in Chicago called it a “very good” constitutional case but with an “odd” twist as it seeks to end same-day registration at all polls instead of expanding it statewide.

“They don’t usually ask the court to take away the benefit from the other guy,” she said.

Dec. 1 means the annual salary threshold at which companies can deny overtime pay will be doubled from $23,660 to nearly $47,500.

The News-Gazette reported Sunday that interim Provost Edward Feser told faculty it would be impractical and costly to track researchers’ hours and pay them overtime. He said other universities are also adopting the new minimum salary for researchers.

Campus spokeswoman Robin Kaler said the average pay of research associates is $39,600.

Kaler said the money for the raises will come from existing research grants, in some cases.

Gang leader gets 12½ years in prison on heroin charges

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A man accused by federal authorities of being the Michigan leader

of a Chicago-based gang has been sentenced to 12½ years in prison after being convicted of heroin distribution and conspiracy.

The Grand Rapids Press reported that assistant U.S. attorneys in court documents described Kenton Taylor as the highest-ranking member of the Black P Stone Nation gang in Michigan. They said the gang used religion to “gloss over” its actual mission of trafficking in drugs and guns.

Taylor and three others were charged with conspiracy to distribute more than 100 grams of heroin and heroin trafficking.

The others took plea deals. In addition to the prison sentence, U.S. District Judge Janet Neff on Wednesday also ordered Taylor to serve eight years on supervised release after being released from prison.

OMAHA, Neb. – The parents of the toddler who was killed by an alligator at Walt Disney World in Florida say they will always remember their sweet little boy.

Melissa and Matt Graves spoke to a group of several hundred people gathered at a high school football stadium Saturday to remember Lane Graves on what would have been his third birthday, The Omaha World-Herald reported.

Lane died June 14 after an alligator pulled him into a lagoon at Disney’s upscale Grand Floridian Resort. He was gathering sand for a sand castle when the alligator bit his head.

The final report on his death said the boy died from a crushing bite and drowning and that his dad reached into the alligator’s mouth to try to save the boy.

After Lane’s death, Disney made changes to restrict visitor contact with alligators on the property. Fences and other barriers were built around some of the lakes, and “No Fishing” signs were installed around waterfront areas. Disney World also limited fishing to excursions.

PARKMAN, Maine – The converted turkey coop that a co-founder of Burt’s Bees once called home in Maine is going to be saved and displayed at the company’s headquarters in North Carolina.

Burt’s Bees has bought the structure where Burt Shavitz once lived and has moved it to Durham, where it’s going on display this fall.

The 300-square-foot shelter with no running water is where Shavitz lived before finding fame through Burt’s Bees. He ended up back there when his house was damaged by fire in February 2015.

G-20 summit opens amid sluggish growth, trade

HANGZHOU, China – The American and Chinese presidents are calling on major economies to defend free trade at a summit held as sluggish growth and disputes over steel and other imports fuel demands in the United States and Europe to protect local industry.

Opening the Group of 20 meeting, Chinese President Xi Jinping appealed Sunday for governments to resist pressure to raise trade barriers. At the same time, a European leader highlighted the conflicts looming over the summit by calling for action on China’s bloated steel industry.

China made trade a theme of the gathering in this lakeside city southwest of Shanghai even as it faces complaints a flood of low-cost steel exports are threatening U.S. and European jobs, fueling demands for trade curbs.

“We should build an open world economy,” Xi said before an audience that included U.S. President Barack Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister Theresa May and leaders from Japan, South Korea, India and other governments.

Governments should “avoid taking new protectionist measures” and “take effective action to promote trade growth,” Xi said.

Xi called for innovation to spur growth and reforms to global financial and economic management. He appealed for cooperation in taxes and fighting corruption, and for measures to “improve the ability of the world economy to resist risks.”

China hopes its status as this year’s G-20

leader will increase its influence in global economic management. Chinese officials want the G-20, created to respond to the 2008 financial crisis, to take on a longer-term regulatory role.

Other leaders have called for “inclusive growth” - a reference to efforts to spread the benefits of closer global integration to millions of people who have been left behind by wrenching change.

Obama stressed that theme at a separate news conference with May. “We must all work together to spur economic growth, to boost free trade and build a fairer economy that truly works for all,” said Obama.

Also Sunday, the president of the European Union’s governing body, the European Commission, called for action on China’s bloated steel industry.

The G-20 meeting “must urgently find a solution” to excess steel production, said JeanClaude Juncker. He called on Beijing to accept a monitoring mechanism for overproduction that Beijing’s trading partners blame for low prices and job losses.

China, the world’s biggest steel producer, has committed to reducing its production capacity by 100 to 150 million tons by 2020, a pledge Xi repeated Saturday.

“Free trade must be fair trade,” Juncker said at a news conference with Donald Tusk, president of the European Council.

Another prominent issue at the summit is G-20 member Britain’s June vote to leave the 28-nation EU, seen by some analysts as the first in a wave of moves by other nations to retreat from free trade.

Celebrating a splendid idea – Labor Day More than 100 years after the first federal observance of Labor Day, there is still debate about who first pitched the idea of a holiday to celebrate workers.

We have no intention of contributing to that debate today, but what a great idea it was, regardless who deserves the credit.

For the lucky ones, today is a day off. It is a day to celebrate the social and economic achievements of American workers. Regardless of what industry you’re in, everyone who works deserves recognition for the contributions they bring to the economy and to the many services provided by government that our taxes help pay for.

A day off that honors workers seems the least the country can do.

Granted, those who aren’t working – but who are actively looking for a job – deserve a day to be recognized, too.

While Illinois’ unemployment rate dropped to 5.8 percent in July, the lowest since 2008, that doesn’t necessarily tell the whole story.

Since the Great Recession led to hundreds of thousands of Illinoisans losing their jobs, many simply have stopped looking for work. They aren’t counted in the unemployment rate.

And because of Illinois’ dire fiscal condition, high taxes and corrosive political climate, many others decided to find jobs – and homes – out of state. We’ve been sorry to see them go.

There is much that needs to be done to improve the working climate in Illinois – and we should be pressuring our lawmakers to take action.

Unfortunately, we expect the taxes we pay on the incomes we earn through our hard work only to go up after the Nov. 8 election. State government for years has been spending more money than it brings in. The cowards and the crooks in Springfield are waiting until after the election to reach into our pocketbooks and take more.

There is a little something we can do. We can become informed voters and make sure we vote for the candidates who best represent our values in every election, year in and year out.

When and where appropriate, we can let our elected officials know regularly how we feel about their inaction, or their incompetence.

But today – Labor Day – let’s relax and celebrate American workers. They – we – deserve it.

GUEST VIEW Rosemary Feurer they have help to set nonunion workers’ pay at higher levels – the union differential – as the EPI study shows. The same is true for workers in states that have the highest union density – those states have the higher rates of pay for members and nonmembers alike.

But the role of unions is broader than wages. Unions give democratic voice and the power to set an agenda in society. In fact, unions have been critical in establishing a “moral economy” regarding fairness, political and policy milestones, establishing standards we now take for granted. That explains why unions have been subject to relentless attack in recent years by those with wealth and power.

Many Northern Illinois University faculty stood aside as unions were attacked in the private sector, thinking that they were immune

from these same forces because of professional status or educational attainment. As the same ideological forces that decimated private-sector unions attacked our pensions, nonunion faculty were the beneficiaries of the collective efforts of Illinois public-sector unions that saved our pension rights by filing the successful lawsuit against unconstitutional changes, to name one example.

We’ve benefited from unions without recognizing it or helping with that defense.

We’ve wised up as we’ve seen our power and numbers decline and the number of administrative positions increase. One professor at NIU recently compared her life at NIU with the kind of whipsawing that her grandfather experienced as an autoworker.

Many of us have concluded that if we are to save the mission of the public university, we have to use legal and moral collective rights, not only for collective bargaining for wages and fairness, but to act politically to affect policy in and

beyond the university. We need to democratize the university in order to protect our rights, help our students and benefit society.

We have seen too much administrative bloat while faculty numbers continue to erode. We have seen our local and state political representatives vote against our interests.

Getting back to a public education model will require our union to keep that bigger picture in mind as we pragmatically address the specific concerns of our faculty and their sense that their voice is not directing the mission of the university. We have an opportunity to be proactive in achieving a broadly constructed agenda that keeps students, faculty and the public foremost in our mindset.

NIU faculty have organized, we have a voice, and we intend to use it to benefit ourselves and the community.

Fearful Trump supporters hold us all hostage On Aug. 31, Donald Trump delivered a mind-boggling speech on immigration, striking for its anger, its mendacity, its hostility, its cruelty and its frank bigotry. Trump has once again defied the expectations of longtime political observers with behavior that sets the bar for presidential candidates ever lower, that veers wildly outside the mainstream, that competes with history’s most dangerous dictators in its audaciousness.

Even as Republican strategists have advised a more welcoming attitude toward voters of color, Trump has cemented his party’s reputation as the home of racially resentful white people. He has virtually guaranteed that the Republican Party will struggle to attract Latino voters for the next generation.

So the matter of whether the GOP nominee can “pivot” to a style of campaigning that more closely resembles the conventional – and that doesn’t scare the socks off most reasonable voters – ought to now be settled: No, he cannot. This is, in the language of his Twitter handle, the real Donald Trump. He is hateful, bullying and vile. Period.

Moreover, Trump’s noxious views likely will set back the cause of comprehensive immigration reform even

Bush tried to push forward a reasonable solution to the plight of 11 million or so undocumented immigrants living in the shadows, congressional Republicans have balked, afraid of a backlash from the far-right precincts that can determine GOP primary elections. Given the way that Trump’s bashing of Mexicans and Muslims has resonated with the ultra-right, mainstream Republicans are unlikely to sanction even a mention of immigration reform.

That’s despite the fact that most Americans disagree with Trump’s proposals. According to a July CBS/ New York Times poll, 61 percent of Americans believe illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay and apply for citizenship. Fifty-seven percent oppose Trump’s “beautiful” wall.

But there is a deep partisan cleavage here. While 83 percent of Democrats oppose Trump’s wall, as well as 56 percent of independents, only 27 percent of Republicans do. According to a Bloomberg poll, 73 percent of Dem-

ocrats oppose Trump’s plan for blanket deportations, but only 54 percent of Republicans do. It’s no wonder, then, that Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., faced with opposition from the right-wing fringe, fled from his previous support for sensible policies to legalize the illegal immigrants already here.

That cowardice hurts not only the Republican Party, but also the country.

Our refusal to pass comprehensive immigration reform has cut off opportunities for countless bright, hard-working young immigrants who’d like to go to college but can’t afford it because they don’t have the papers that would allow them to get scholarships and reduced tuition.

Our failure to act has stifled countless illegal workers who would like to own homes and start businesses.

They are Americans in virtually every way. It makes no sense to leave them in limbo.

But Trump has managed to persuade many working-class whites that illegal immigrants destroy neighborhoods, peddle drugs, murder innocents and drive down wages.

They take well-paying jobs, he says, from citizens who deserve them. (To be fair, most of those claims aren’t original to Trump. They’ve been

bandied about on the right for decades now.)

Much of that is simply not true. The population of criminals among illegal immigrants is lower than the percentage among native-born Americans, according to criminologists. As for the economic competition, there is no doubt that low-wage workers can be hurt by an influx of undocumented workers. The biggest burden falls on those without high school diplomas, who may see their wages fall by anywhere from 0.4 percent to 7 percent, research shows. That is certainly cause for worry.

But the answer to that is to make those undocumented workers legal, which would force their employers to pay them a higher wage. Too many employers get away with paying illegal workers less money and placing them in dangerous conditions.

If the solutions are all too obvious to most Americans, they represent a bridge to a treacherous new world order to many Trump supporters.

And, for now, we are all held hostage to their prejudices and fears.

There’s a new union in town, the United Faculty Alliance-NIU, and Labor Day is a good time to think about the potential positive change this will bring to our community.

Unions have been the most effective instrument for raising the pay of members who pay dues, but also elevate nonmembers pay and benefits.

A recent study by the Economic Policy Institute (Rosenfeld, Denice, Laird, “Union decline lowers wages of nonunion workers,” Aug. 30) shows that where unions are strong in specific industries or economic sectors, there is a ripple effect. In the 1950s almost a third of workers were union members and that ripple effect helped to create the middle class. In order to attract workers and stave off unionization, nonunion employers have to match those wages and benefits.

Since the 1970s, this effect has been in decline and accounts for a good deal of the wage stagnation that has increased inequality. But where unions still have a significant sector in an area or industry,

The Sycamore Park District will host a Good Tymes Revival from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the district’s maintenance building, 435 Airport Road in Sycamore.

The event will feature Howl at the Moon’s traveling all-request dueling piano show, heavy snacks, activities and a cash bar. It promises to be a night full of fun and surprises.

Tickets cost $50 and include one complimentary drink.

All proceeds from the event will support the district’s fundraising campaign, Leaf a Legacy, which hopes to raise $1 million for its long-range projects.

The event is for ages 21 and older.

BRIEFS NIU annuitants celebrate ‘back-to-school’

DAILY CHRONICLE Kite enthusiasts of all ages are invited to the Northern Illinois University’s North 40 field on Sunday to enjoy a day of kiting and kids activities.

The 11th annual DeKalb Kite Festival will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the field at Lucinda Avenue and Kishwaukee Drive, adjacent to Anderson Hall. Admission is free; parking is $3, cash only.

The festival will offer kite-making for kids, a candy drop and games. Spectators are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets to watch the kites take flight.

“Many of the kites are more than 100 feet in length, are all shapes and sizes and will fill the skies over DeKalb,” Debbie Armstrong, Kite Fest co-chairwoman, said in a news release. “One of my favorite kites is a little bear that leads the kids onto the field for kite candy drop. The kids look forward to that every year.”

The featured kite pilots are recruited by Dave Zavell from Chicago Kite.

“Many of them return to our festival year

after year to showcase their beautiful kites for our community,” Armstrong said in the release.

Food will be available for purchase from Sweet Dream Desserts and Catering and Cream King. Other organizations participating include Art Attack, A-TEC Ambulance, DeKalb Park District, NIU Athletics and NIU STEM Outreach.

DeKalb Kite Fest offers plenty of space for participants to fly their own kites. Bring a kite, make a kite or buy a kite from Chicago Kite, which will be on site.

Festgoers will be entertained by 15 Wisconsin-based fliers and Team Sky-FX, a quad team from Ohio.

“The types of kites flying will depend on the weather, but we’re planning to fly kites of all different shapes and forms, including two line controllable kites, stunt kites and quad-line kites,” Zavell said in the release.

September is Family Meals Month Are family meals a lost art? In our world today, with fast-paced lives, busy work schedules and extracurricular activities, drive-thru meals and takeout food have become the norm. What impact does this have on our kids, our families and ourselves? As the trend moves toward simplicity and convenience, let’s not overlook the fact that preparing and eating meals together stimulates communication, creates memories and establishes healthy eating behaviors that have a long-lasting impact.

Research shows that when families eat meals together on a regular basis, they have greater unity and closer relationships. Children in families who eat together are better adjusted to the pressures of society. These children are more comfortable and confident in their own skin. The long-term nutritional benefits for individuals who have grown up eating family meals are clear too. The percentage of family members who are overweight, or abuse alcohol or drugs, is significantly lower in families who eat meals together on a regular basis than those who don’t.

Historically, traditional family meals were part of an everyday ritual, like brushing teeth. Homemade meals were prepared from scratch, dinner was served at the same time every night, and family members had assigned seats. Lessons and wisdom were shared over the dinner table. Children grew in their character, learning manners, self-discipline and gratitude.

While Wyoming running back Brian Hill (33 carries, 125 yards, two touchdowns) bulldozed his way against the NIU defense, the Huskies struggled mightily to run up the middle against the Cowboys.

The leading rusher on the day for the Huskies was senior wide receiver Kenny Golladay, who ran six sweeps for 82 yards and a touchdown. Taking away the yards of Golladay, who only had 14 rushing yards last year, and the Huskies finished with 36 carries for 51

yards – an average of 1.4 per attempt.

Senior running back Joel Bouagnon, who had 1,285 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns in 2015, had 10 carries for 16 yards. During the first overtime, the Huskies were on the 2-yard line on third down – a situation in which the Huskies would have had Bouagnon plow in for a touchdown last season.

Instead, they fumbled the snap over to Wyoming and had to be bailed out when the Cowboys missed their field goal attempt.

Despite the inability to run up the middle on the run, Carey declined to

say that they struggled to run the ball – citing Golladay’s runs on the outside.

“It doesn’t matter ... running the ball is running the ball,” Carey said of the Huskies, who were outgained 243-133 on the ground. “If you want to sit there and say, ‘Running up the middle didn’t work, so you need to get better at that,’ – yeah, no doubt. But running the ball is running the ball. End of story.”

A major positive for the Huskies moving forward, however, was the play of senior quarterback Drew Hare, who was playing in his first game since tearing his Achilles against Toledo on Nov. 3. He finished 24 for 39 with 329 yards and three touchdowns. In the first Huskies drive of the game, he went 6 for 6 for 72 yards and hit Golladay (10 catches, 144 yards) for a 39-yard touchdown along the right sideline.

When NIU trailed 27-20 with 3:12 left to go, Hare was sacked on first down to put the Huskies facing a second-and-20 from their own 13. After that, he went 6 for 9 with 87 yards and a 19-yard touchdown pass to tight end Shane Wimann to force overtime.

“He had some mistakes, but overall I think it was pretty good for his long layoff,” Carey said. “But we have to get some things cleaned up – with him too, because there were some plays where he had that he could have made there.

But overall, pretty good.”

LARAMIE, Wyo. – Most Northern Illinois football fans woke up Sunday morning to find the sky was falling.

The Huskies opened the season with a 40-34 loss at Wyoming, but the heartbreaking, triple-overtime defeat was filled with several moments in which NIU was its own worst enemy.

There were missed extra points and field goals, a fumble on the 2-yard line and several costly penalties – 12 in all after having a season-high of eight last season.

“Too many mistakes to win a football game,” Huskies coach Rod Carey said. “The kids played hard, but we’ve got a lot to correct. I think there’s enough blame to go around with all the sloppiness there was. Good football team, give Wyoming credit. We knew they were going to be improved, and they were everything we thought they were.”

However, the Huskies, who had 12 penalties for 108 yards, weren’t the only ones to have critical miscues during the season opener that lasted four hours, 14 minutes. Wyoming committed 10 penalties for 100 yards – including ones that negated a kick return for a touchdown and a punt return for a touchdown.

The Cowboys, who went 2-10 last year but bring back 17 starters, also missed a pair of field goals that would have won the game – from 48 at the end of regulation and a 37-yarder that would have won it during the first overtime.

Regardless, Northern Illinois (0-1) had plenty of chances that went unfulfilled.

Two plays after the Huskies took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, NIU sophomore linebacker Renard Cheren intercepted a pass and returned it deep into Wyoming territory but NIU star cornerback Shawun Lurry was called for holding. In the second half, Lurry had a chance at a pick-six, but couldn’t haul in the interception.

With the game tied at 20 late in the third quarter, the NIU defense committed three penalties on a Wyoming drive – holding, personal foul and pass interference – that helped result in a touchdown pass by Cowboys quarterback Josh Allen, who returned from an early season-ending injury in 2015 by going 19 for 29 with 245 yards and two scores and also rushed for 70 yards and the game-winning 7-yard scamper in triple overtime.

“The game slowed down for me as it went on,” Allen said. “I came out a little nervous, eager to play, calmed down after halftime. The offense didn’t give up any sacks and I felt comfortable in the

Bizarre game leaves Huskies with tough start to season VIEWS Jesse Severson LARAMIE, WYOMING – During the Northern Illinois football team’s marathon season-opening loss at Wyoming, somebody told senior receiver Kenny Golladay that it was 1:40 a.m.

That was during the fourth quarter.

“It was new for me, just like probably everybody else, I’ve never done that. I don’t know who has,” said Golladay, who was a main bright spot for the Huskies’ offense with 10 catches for 144 yards and two touchdowns, along with 82 rushing yards and a score. “It was a fun game. It just didn’t come out in our favor.”

The whole night felt like watching a football game in the Twilight Zone. The game started with a twohour delay because of heavy rain and lightning. The Wyoming-based radio station had cut to a talk show after regulation – at 2:08 a.m. MST. The person using the PA inside the media room greeted press row coming out of halftime with a literal, “Good morning,” when the clock had got past midnight.

“It was weird,” NIU offensive lineman Josh Ruka said about playing in the wee hours of the morning.

Weird is an understatement.

It was such a unique situation.

One that college football probably won’t see for a long time, aside from maybe a game being played at Hawaii. When Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen finally scored the game-winning 7-yard touchdown run – scrambling around and avoiding an exhausted NIU defense, the clock struck 2:34 a.m.

“Never been a part of a game like that with so many plays and three overtimes along with the final play with the bootleg play by Josh (Allen),” Wyoming coach Craig Bohl said. “There were a lot of great plays in the game, so it was a great win for the program.”

The game already was on the fast-track to being a long night when the pregame storm came through and sent each team to their locker rooms for two hours. NIU linebacker Sean Folliard said the team essentially sat around, and some Huskies took to Twitter to post their thoughts.

When asked if the two-hour delay – which affected both teams – had any impact on the Huskies, NIU coach Rod Carey simply said, “No.

Not at all.”

For as goofy as the whole night was – by the way, huge props to the Huskies fans who stayed up until 3:34 a.m. to watch the game – it all amounted to a tough blow to start the season. It was a four-hour, 14-minute punch to the solar plexus.

However, Carey and the Huskies stuck with the motto of moving on and looking at the big picture – absorbing the punch and getting ready to fight during Week 2.

“You fall back on the morals you set yourself on in camp,” Folliard said. “This is a strong team. This is

family. We’re going to stick together through this. ... This sucks, but we’re going to come out stronger and we’re going to come out ferocious and win our next game.”

Had the Huskies won, they could have exhaustingly laughed about the absurdity of playing football only a few hours from sunrise.

Instead, they quickly showered and solemnly walked back to their bus to catch their flight home.

Regardless of the outcome, it is likely a scenario we might not see for a long time. It’s hard to believe that there’s a situation in which the game would be in triple overtime and fans would be struggling to keep their eyes open. It made me appreciate what those sleeping babies during Game 7 of a World Series are going through.

It can be hard to just let go of a game like this, but the Mid-American Conference title is the longterm goal of this team and South Florida isn’t going to be shedding any tears for the Huskies when the teams face off Saturday in Tampa.

I just hope the game ends on Saturday, too.

SYCAMORE- The Sycamore boys soccer team pulled out a 2-1 win over Hononegah Saturday, despite being down 1-0 at halftime.

It was a pair of goals- within a minute of one another- by senior forward Phillip Maillefer that was the deciding factor in the match.

“I was given the God given gift of speed,” Maillefer said. “I was able to out run the defenders, see the corners and capitalize. I give God all the glory for it.”

The Spartans (4-3) started the game rather sluggish, allowing for Honoegah to control the ball on the Spartans side of the field. After Honoegah scored their first goal and threatened a few more times on corner kicks and free kicks, the Spartans settled down.

Sycamore head coach David Bachta appreciated his team’s resiliency as he fired them up from the sidelines.

“I’d rather not yell,” Bachta said with a laugh. “Sometimes, high school

kids live in five or ten minute windows.

I just want to remind them of what they should be doing in the moment. I thought we started slow today, but we ended up picking up our game as time wore on.”

Hononegah (0-3-1) coach Vee Jevremovic didn’t mince words with his club.

In his postgame meeting with the team, he challenged them to remain focused and composed for an entire 90 minutes.

Honoegah was given three yellow cards during the game, with two of them coming for unsporting conduct. Jevremovic told his team that he didn’t have much patience for what he called “stupid” cards.

“They have to understand that they can do it,” Jervremovic said of his team’s ability to be mentally tough.

“They’ve done it for 55 and 60 minutes at a time. They have to support each other and understand that their backs will be up against the wall sometimes.”

The Spartans will open up Northern Illinois Big 12 play hosting Yorkville on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Sources: Bears release all-time points leader Gould

ajahns@suntimes.com It’s Robbie Gould and then everybody else. Even the most famous Bears kicker of all time, Kevin Butler of 1985 Bears fame, sees it that way.

When Gould was on the verge of breaking Butler’s all-time points record with the Bears last season, Butler showered Gould with compliments.

In doing so, Butler even mentioned Gould in the same breath as Bears legend Walter Payton.

“He’s representing one of the best franchises in professional sports and certainly in football,” Butler said in an interview with the Sun-Times in October 2015.

“And when you can have your name

at the top of any list that has Walter Payton on it, you’ve got something special.”

On Sunday, “something special” came to an abrupt and unceremonious end. League sources said the Bears have informed Gould of his release.

Gould will be replaced by veteran kicker Connor Barth, who officially will join the Robbie Gould Bears on Monday.

Gould’s release came down to a matter of recent production and economics.

His struggles in training camp carried over into preseason games. It included missing two extra points in the Bears’ final exhibition in Cleveland.

season, including a potential game-winner against the 49ers.

From a financial standpoint, Gould was entering the third year of a fouryear, $15 million extension he signed under former general manager Phil Emery in 2014. It included $4.9 million guaranteed.

He was slated to have the highest salary-cap hit among kickers this season at $4.1 million. Releasing Gould saves the Bears $3 million. The Bears had salary-cap space, but they did sign All-Pro guard Josh Sitton to a three-year contract late Sunday.

Still, nothing diminishes the Gould’s place in Bears history.

Gould holds franchise records for career points (1,207), field goals made (276) and field goals of 50 yards or more (23).

He was set to begin his 12th NFL season the ninth most accurate kicker in NFL history (85.4 percent, 276 for 323).

Butler always marveled at how well he kicked on the lakefront at Soldier Field.

“The bottom line is that his consistency in that environment really ranks among the top of the NFL,” Butler said in last year’s interview with the SunTimes. “It’s just uncanny.

“I couldn’t be more proud of Robbie to do what he’s done in his career at Chicago. He’s just been consistent to a new level.”

Bears players trusted Gould. It was a surprise whenever he missed. He also had a certain edge to him. He knew every detail of special teams. And he excelled under pressure.

Anderson pushes Sox over Twins

The Associated Press MINNEAPOLIS – Jose Abreu hit two three-run homers and drove in a career-best seven runs, and the White Sox used Tim Anderson’s two-run double in the 12th inning to beat the Minnesota Twins, 13-11, on Sunday Abreu, Anderson and Melky Cabrera had three hits apiece, helping the Sox overcome four homers for Minnesota. The teams combined for 18 homers while splitting the four-game series.

Juan Minaya (1-0) earned his first major league win. He pitched a scoreless 11th but walked the first two batters in the 12th. Tommy Kahnle then came in and earned his third career save, retiring Eddie Rosario with the bases loaded for the final out.

Byron Buxton hit his first career grand slam for Minnesota, and Brian Dozier, Miguel Sano and John Ryan Murphy also went deep. The Twins hit 11 homers in the four-game set.

With one out and runners on second and third, Anderson doubled to deep left against Pat Dean (1-6). It was the

rookie’s 18th double of the year.

Abreu opened the scoring with a three-run shot in the first. He added an RBI single in the fifth and another three-run drive in the seventh, trimming Minnesota’s lead to 9-7.

Abreu is batting .370 with 11 homers and 30 RBIs in his past 31 games.

The Sox took the lead on a two-run single by Avisail Garcia in the ninth off Brandon Kintzler, who blew his second save in 15 chances.

But Minnesota came back in the bottom half. Pinch runner Logan Schafer scored on pinch hitter Kurt Suzuki’s double to the left-field wall, handing David Robertson his seventh blown save in 40 chances.

Buxton had three hits, and Dozier connected for his 35th homer. Sano hit his 22nd and Murphy added his first for the Twins after being recalled a day earlier.

Dozier leads the majors with 21 homers since the All-Star break. He has the most home runs of any Twins player since Josh Willingham also hit 35 in 2012. Only Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew has hit more homers in a single season in Twins history.

CHICAGO – Jason Heyward tied it with a single in the ninth inning and his liner to left-center in the 13th won it as the Cubs beat the San Francisco Giants, 3-2, on Sunday to take three of four games in a possible playoff preview.

Anthony Rizzo led off the 13th with a single off Matt Reynolds (0-1) and went to second on Ben Zobrist’s sacrifice. Addison Russell, who had three hits, was walked intentionally before Heyward drove in his third run of the game.

Trevor Cahill (4-4) worked a perfect inning in a series in which all four games were decided by one run.

The Cubs were staring at a secondstraight loss when Russell led off the ninth with a double against Santiago Casilla. He went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Heyward’s single up the middle to hand Casilla his seventh blown save.

Each team had chances earlier in extra innings. Cubs closer Aroldis Chapman worked two scoreless innings, striking out Brandon Belt on a 102 mph fastball with two on to end the 11th.

The Giants’ Cory Gearrin struck out Russell looking on a questionable call with a runner on second to end the 10th.

The Giants appeared on their way to the win in regulation despite managing two hits thanks to seven strong innings from Johnny Cueto and a perfectly executed suicide squeeze.

Eduardo Nunez doubled in the fifth, stole third then broke for home as Ehire Adrianza put down a soft bunt in front of the mound that forced John Lackey to throw to first and snapped a 1-all tie.

In his first start since Aug. 14 because of a shoulder strain, Lackey trailed 1-0 after 31/2 innings despite not allowing a hit.

Heyward was charged with a twobase error in the second when he couldn’t make a running catch of Hunter Pence’s fly to right-center. Pence scored the unearned run on Nunez’s groundout.

After the Cubs tied it when Heyward’s single scored Anthony Rizzo in the fourth, the Giants got their first hit an inning later on Nunez’s one-out liner to the gap.

Lackey, on a pitch count, was lifted after 76 pitches, one earned run and one hit.

Meet Ana, a 4 month old black mouth cur. She’s considered a special needs puppy. Daily care, including walks, obedience training and potty training may be more difficult than with the average puppy.Heradoptionfeehasbeenreduced($225total,$150adoptionfeeplusthat$75obedience class deposit). She was born with problems to her Central Nervous System. Balance issues and backendweaknessareevident,butthatdoesn’tstopher.She’s oneof themostpreciouspuppies ever. A good quality of life is expected, but an owner must properly accommodate for the balance issues and weakness, and know that this is a life-long condition that will not improve. She has shown some fear behaviors and is not recommended to live in a home with young children, as quick movements seem to scare her. Use caution if any children live in/visit the home. She will likely do best in a calm, consistent household (few people living in the home, minimal visitors to the home, no loud/rambunctious people in the home). She may need a longer time to adjust in the new home than the average dog. Giving her a crate as a safe place in a quiet location in the new home may help with the adjustment period. Obedience classes should be started as soon as possible after adoption once they have had a couple weeks to adjust to the new home.

Help doctor find time to treat Dear Dr. K: I like my doctor and I trust his judgment, but I don’t feel he really listens to me or explains things. What can I do, besides look for another doctor?

Dear Reader: Like every doctor, I am a patient as well as a doctor. I think I can see things from both perspectives. Let me respond first as a patient.

If you like and trust your doctor, I’d recommend you put him to the test before looking for another. At your next visit, gently but firmly make certain things clear: Suppose he says something you don’t understand. Tell him you’re sorry, but you don’t understand. Ask him to explain it again.

Suppose he recommends a particular diagnostic test or treatment. If you’re concerned about the risk, the cost or something else, tell him that, and explain why. If he mentions risks, be sure he tells you how likely the risks are.

(Don’t expect a precise answer, but ask for a rough estimate: one in 10, one in 100, one in 1,000?)

Suppose, after hearing the answer, you don’t like the doctor’s recommended test or treatment. Then ask him whether there are any other options you both should consider.

Suppose you’re dealing with a potentially serious illness, or a test or treatment that has serious risks – a diagnosis of cancer, or a major operation, for example.

DEAR ABBY I am a retired librarian who Jeanne lives in Texas. I Phillips am what around here is called “Anglo,” meaning white and not Hispanic. I speak four languages, with varying degrees of proficiency.

Recently, a friend who is Hispanic told me if an Anglo speaks Spanish to a Hispanic person, it’s considered an insult because it implies the Hispanic person is “too stupid” to learn English. I had never heard of this before, so I asked a retired college-level Spanish teacher who is also Anglo. She informed me Hispanic people use the language difference as a “boundary,” and my speaking Spanish to them was a violation of their boundaries.

It came as a complete shock. This happened more than a month ago, and I’m having a hard time dealing with it. I spent a lifetime developing language skills. I always considered speaking another language to be a sign of respect and friendship. Now I’m being told it’s insulting and intrusive? I can’t believe all Hispanic people feel this way, but I don’t know what to do with this information. What should I do? – In Shock In San Antonio Dear In Shock: After reading your letter, I polled a focus group of Spanish-speaking friends about it. Some said it didn’t bother them, but the majority explained the reaction may depend on how long the family has been in this country. If it has been several generations, the people you are addressing might identify more as English speakers than Spanish speakers, and consider your addressing them in Spanish to be condescending because it implies you don’t think they have learned English.

So the rule of thumb would be: Assume everyone speaks English; then if it turns out they don’t, use their language.

He has a third possibility. He wins with dummy’s club ace, ruffs a club in his hand, draws two rounds of trumps ending on the board, ruffs the last club, and plays off his spade winners. Then he exits with a trump.

Here, East must lead a diamond away from the queen, so the slam makes. But note that if East can safely play a spade or a club, declarer still has the diamond finesse available.
