Celebrating work on Labor Day weekend Type “find your purpose in life” into a web search engine and you’ll find no shortage of suggestions.

There’s a “wikiHow” page that offers a very detailed plan, complete with illustrations that look like something out of the pamphlets they used to hand out at church, with pictures of people meditating, going down waterslides, immersed in thought.

I guess it makes sense that a how-to on such a deep question would require a lot of steps, if one agrees with the premise that it’s something you really can get to the bottom of in that way.

One thing about me, I tend to see things in pretty simple terms, and apply myself accordingly. Sometimes that’s a weakness, sometimes a strength. My prescription – and admittedly I’m not writing a self-help book here – is straight ahead: • Find work you love and do it all out.

• Find people you love, and love them.

• Exercise once in a while.

There are other days to talk about those last two, but it’s Labor Day weekend. My wish for anyone out there is to find work that means something to them.

Maybe it’s work that when you’re done, you’ve built something you can touch, or that made someone happy. Maybe you just get to come home at the end of the day tired but satisfied.

You don’t have to build the pyramids or perform brain surgery to matter. Doing something well can make a huge difference in ways we might never personally learn about.

Meaningful work isn’t just the means by which we survive. It sustains us.

When I think about Labor Day, I think of the principle that all of us can do something that matters, that “God don’t make

I’m now the oldest working man in my family line. My father worked overnights for decades with FedEx at O’Hare Airport, and I know it mattered to him. He liked to talk about the intricacies of the operation using acronyms and terms I couldn’t understand, about what they’d have to do when there was an ice storm or how he got the men and women on his crew to perform to their potential.

My grandfather was a pressman who printed the Chicago Tribune, Chicago SunTimes and the old Chicago Daily News. I have the last edition of the Daily News on the wall in my office. He helped print it.

He walked a picket line before he retired in the early 1980s. At his funeral, the pastor said, “He was a proud union man.”

My hope for me, and for you, is that the work that so many of us spend so much time at is something you can look back on with pride. If you’re not doing what you love now, may fate lead you there soon.

But not too soon. Let’s all enjoy this long Labor Day weekend. I don’t know about you, but I could use some time off.

Reward of $25K still offered; victim’s car caught on video headed for Chicago

eolson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The Sycamore mother and son who were found dead in their home were killed sometime between 7:45 p.m. and midnight Aug. 14, almost a full day before their bodies were found, investigators have determined.

Patricia A. Wilson, 85, and her son, Robert J. Wilson, 64, were found dead in their home at 16058 Old State Road east of Sycamore about 6 p.m. Aug. 15. Police have said there were signs of a break-in at the home; an autopsy showed they were beaten to death with a blunt object. Police believe the killer or killers fled in Patricia Wilson’s white 2010 Chevrolet Impala.

DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said a comprehensive, ongoing police review of video footage taken along Route 64 that night has shown the Impala with a license plate registered to Patricia Wilson driving through West Chicago on the night of Aug. 14. Patricia Wilson was last heard from about 7:45 p.m. Aug.14, when she had a phone conversation with a family member, Scott said.

“We knew that the last time [they] had a phone conversation when everything was well was at 7:45 p.m. that Sunday night,” Scott said Friday. “And then, through the investigation and reviewing a lot of the video we’ve talked about previously, the vehicle was spotted.”

A $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the killings remains, and Scott said investigators are hoping a more specific time frame and area in which the vehicle was seen could help generate information.

Anyone with information on the killings is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 815-895-2155, or call DeKalb County Crime Stoppers at 815-895-3272. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous.

Scott said the vehicle is visible on multiple video recordings, making its way through West Chicago and other communities along Route 64 that night.

“We anticipate the perpetrator or perpetrators did not want to drive on the tollway, so they Robert J. took a somewhat longer Wilson route timewise to take Route 64,” Scott said.

Since Patricia Wilson’s car was found, investigators with the DeKalb County Major Case Squad have been

working to find video records that might show its path, Scott said. The major case squad has retained its full complement of investigators from the sheriff’s office, Roger as well as from DeKalb, Scott Sycamore, Sandwich and Northern Illinois University police departments and the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office. Police have followed up on more than 700 leads, Scott said.

Much of the focus has been on obtaining and reviewing video footage from the vehicle’s suspected path that night, he said.

“It’s been very intensive work as we continue to do that. That’s been one of the prime focuses of the manpower over the last couple weeks,” Scott said. “We

have had to obtain some search warrants for certain areas, but other than that, we’ve had a lot of cooperation from people.”

Scott declined to reveal the exact time the vehicle was seen traveling through West Chicago, or whether investigators have been able to discern whether there was more than one person inside. It’s common for police to withhold some details in an investigation in order to determine whether tips from the public are genuine.

“We want to let the public know that we are obviously still working hard on the investigation,” Scott said. “Another benefit is that maybe [this information] will help someone think about something maybe they’ve just ignored.

“Maybe they’ll have seen something or known something, since it’s not so wide ranging now.”

County incubator’s new tenants ready to grow

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A writer, technical artist, head of an award-winning local nonprofit organization and an attorney make up the first crop of tenants at DeKalb County’s new business incubator – where officials hope to foster their growth and look for the business owners to pay it forward.

“I hope to get my business started and off on the right foot,” said Kate Wiegele, a Northern Illinois University anthropology professor and one of the first four tenants in the county’s business incubator.

A resident of DeKalb, Wiegele runs her startup, A Write Place, out of the incubator. The business offers support to local writers as well as manuscript editing for authors.

The county opened the area’s first shared workspace, located in the Community Outreach Building in the county health complex at 2500 N. Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb.

It is one of a few of its kind in the country to be government-owned. The incubator is patterned after existing ones in Chicago and Arizona where aspiring entrepreneurs – and even those that have been around for a while – could have space to operate and grow. Work space and other resources are made available to the small business owners at reduced rates.

“This is an open door to so many positive things,” said state Rep. Tom Demmer, R-Dixon. “Incubators are a great place to try to grow businesses, from the local community, that have ties, that have connections.”

Early on in the planning for the incubator, members of the County Board’s Economic Development Committee, where the working space was conceived and born, wanted a venue where entrepreneurs could have a lowcost space to work and possibly receive mentoring.

Those are some of the main reasons Samantha Brown scrambled at the last minute to meet the application deadline for tenancy. The Sandwich Township resident said she learned about the incubator through the Sandwich Chamber of Commerce, on the last day that applications were accepted.

“I thought it sounded like an awesome opportunity. I’ve been in business for about a year, but just kind of struggling [with] where to put my energy and staying accountable,” Brown said.

She rents the cubicle in space E1 in the incubator. That’s where she operates the business side of Fox River Renderings, a company she started in April 2015 that she said uses 3-D modeling and illustration to show ideas for such things as

Brown said initially, she struggled to sort out the business side of her enterprise, including what to focus on and how to set priorities. She’s hoping that, in addition to office space, the incubator will provide mentorship that will prove helpful to her in that regard.

“Being able to have somebody, kind of, invested in my success, and hopefully [me] being able to give back to the community later on, sounded like a great opportunity,” said Brown, who graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago with a degree in media arts and animation.

Wiegele sought the incubator with

the hopes of getting help sorting through the process for starting a business, and getting her enterprise further off the ground.

“The main reason that I was attracted to the incubator was the idea of business assistance, business planning and development. I don’t have a background in business,” said Wiegele, who also is an author and writer. The cubicle she rents for A Write Place is near Brown’s.

In total, the incubator has 15 offices, with rents ranging from $250 to $500 a month, and 27 cubicles that cost $75 monthly for singles to $500 each month for a bank of them. Renters also have ac-

cess to common areas, which include a conference room with TV monitors, and have use of Wi-Fi and fiber optics, among a menu of other amenities. Additionally, renters are able to use other rooms in the building for a fee.

Dan Kenney recently moved business operations for DeKalb County Community Gardens into the incubator. He and his staff of five full-time employees and one part-timer had been meeting in coffee shops and even the kitchen table in his home, he said. Public meetings were held wherever affordable space might be available, he said.

The nonprofit organization started in 2012 as an effort to increase access to fresh, locally grown vegetables for people with limited means of getting it. Now, DCCG, which has gardens in 55 locations throughout the county, has a more centralized place to conduct business, until the organization can afford another space of its own.

“As a new nonprofit, any overhead expenses are difficult to deal with,” Kenney said. “The idea of being able to have a small office space where we can interact with the public and have meetings ... was very appealing.”

A fourth tenant, Omar Salguero, runs his immigration law practice out of the incubator.

Tenants moved into the spaces in July, but the county held the ribbon-cutting last month. There, several elected officials or representatives speaking on their behalf, praised the county for offering the rental space, calling it jolt of support for small business.

WILLIAM T. SHOTT Born: August 12, 1960 Died: August 31, 2016

William “Bill” T. Shott, of Phoenix, AZ, died Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at his home with his wife by his side. He was born August 12, 1960, in Sycamore, IL. The son of Richard and Betty (Swedberg).

He married Crystal Engelsen on June 18th, 1983. He was a graduate of Genoa Kingston High School and honored to be a team-mate of the 1977 Illinois State Championship Team.

He and Crystal moved to Phoenix Arizona in 1984. In 1992 he started his own successful commercial construction company, “Shott Construction, LLC”. He loved fishing, football and baseball, especially going to the Arizona Diamondbacks games. A season ticket holder since day one, 1998.

Survivors include his wife, Crystal; his children, Jeni (Tim) Maijala, Sam (fiance Andrew Crow) and Taylor; one grandson, Jackson; and one grand-daughter, Violet on the way. His parents, Dick and Betty; brothers, Jay (Gloria), Jeff (Carol), John (Diana), Dan (Kara); and many nieces and nephews; Mother-in-law, Charlene Engelsen; and sister-in-law, Jennie (Nate) Comer.

He is preceded in death by grandparents, Henry Shott, Helen Shott-Fant, Samuel and Olen Swedberg; Father-inlaw, Everett Engelsen.

The celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday, September 7th from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Friday’s Front Row at The Arizona Diamondbacks Stadium, 401 E. Jefferson Street, Phoenix, AZ. Please wear a Diamondbacks shirt or your favorite sports team attire.

DeKalb council seeks economic development commissioners

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The city is accepting applications from people interested in serving on the newly reconstituted Economic Development Commission, but at least one alderman has expressed concern that the mayor may be preselecting members.

The City Council voted unanimously at its Aug. 22 meeting to approve the ordinance that would get the volunteer, citizen commission going again. Input from the commission is expected to help the city enhance the local business community and expand the local tax base.

Commission members are sought who represent several business sectors, including the agribusiness, industrial, medical, education, construction, real estate and banking fields.

Before the council vote, Mayor John Rey said he had been meeting with potential applicants for at least the previous two weeks.

“My thought was to prime the pump,” Rey said, “to start identifying individuals, to approach individuals that I wish to see representing those industry sectors.”

That didn’t sit well with 1st Ward Al-

derman David Jacobson.

“I have a slight issue with that,” Jacobson said. “I think that’s the fear, that you have predetermined who you want on this board. You’ve just made it very clear that you’ve been meeting with people before we’ve even passed [the ordinance].”

Rey denied steering the process.

“That’s not to say I’ve preformed the commission, far from it,” Rey said.

Rey will appoint people to the seven-member commission, five of whom – including the person selected to be the chairman – must be DeKalb residents.

Although two appointees could live outside of DeKalb, they are required to work here, according to the approved plans for the commission. Each commissioner would serve a three-year term.

Aldermen would have to approve the mayor’s nominees.

City officials announced that one of the first things the commission with do is help create a written economic development plan for the city.

Applications for the commission are available on the city’s website, www. cityofdekalb.com, and the application process includes submitting a letter of interest.

DeKALB – Julie Craig was at the Walnut Grove Vocational Farm in Kirkland on Friday, watching and helping as seven local people with developmental disabilities spent the morning cleaning garlic and beets, and picking tomatoes, leeks and carrots.

Craig is the co-program director of the Gracie Center, a local initiative that helps some DeKalb County disabled residents find opportunities for job and life-skills training after they age out of the public school system. She said that her organization’s partnership with the DeKalb County Community Gardens, which operates Walnut Grove, has been invaluable.

“We wouldn’t be here without them,” Craig said. “We definitely use their service.”

Local efforts to provide access to fresh produce and opportunity for developmentally disabled people will get a $15,000 boost after DeKalb County Community Gardens emerged

as one of three North American groups to prevail in a grant competition.

The funds will come from Richmond, Canada-based organic food company Nature’s Path, which selected three community gardening projects from more than 100 entries in its Gardens for Good contest. The community gardens organization was one of three winners, with another in Madison, Wisconsin, and the third in Canada.

An online vote from June 20 to July 5 helped winnow the field from almost 100 to nine. A panel of judges then evaluated the work done by each of the remaining nine projects and selected three winners.

Since it began in 2012, the nonprofit community gardens project has raised more than 70,000 pounds of fresh food for food pantries and community meal sites, with the help of more than 300 volunteers a year, Executive Director Dan Kenney said.

offerings on the property in hopes of starting a pick-your-own business, as well as teaching disabled people more skills, he said.

In addition to the Gracie Center, the community gardens partners with Sycamore-based Opportunity House and Genoa-Kingston and Sycamore high schools to introduce young people to agriculture.

Gracie Center, which was founded in 2012, is known for its PopUp shop, a big purple trailer from which participants and supervisors sell gourmet popcorn.

The group also uses a quarter acre of the Walnut Grove property to grow its own popcorn, and is planning to partner with the community gardens to obtain vegetables for a future pizza-making enterprise, Craig said.

Along the way, participants are learning about agriculture and horticulture, making them employable, she said.

“They’re teaching them different skills out here that they can then transfer to jobs elsewhere,” Craig said. “I know there’s other greenhouses that have offered to hire people that are trained out here.”

“It’s a good example of a real community project, where people of all ages and all backgrounds have been involved one way or another,” Kenney said.

The funds are unrestricted and will be used to cover operating costs for the program as it seeks to expand its efforts to provide fresh produce from area garden plots for local food pantries, as well as to the public through farmers markets and a community supported agriculture program, Kenney said.

The Walnut Grove farm is on 20 acres in Kirkland. It includes an orchard, gardens and greenhouses on 10 acres, with the other half an oak savanna the group is working to restore, Kenney said. Plans for next season include expanding the orchard and fruit

News from across the state Illinois agrees to $450,000 settlement in prison rape suit

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Corrections has agreed to pay $450,000 to a man who said prison officials punished and humiliated him after he reported his cellmate raped him.

The man’s attorneys announced the settlement of his federal lawsuit Friday.

He was imprisoned for eight months for a minor drug offense, and was housed in a cell at the Logan Correctional Center in Lincoln with a gang member serving 22 years for armed robbery.

The lawsuit said the man’s cellmate raped him in August 2011. It alleges prison officials failed to give him proper medical attention, threatened him with

The Chicago Police Department responded in a statement that making the city safer will depend on strong partnerships with the community and help to keep repeat gun offenders off the streets.

“We will continue to target the gangs that drive the majority of violence,” department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. “But with nearly half of those we arrest for murder being repeated gun offenders, we need help to ensure these individuals stay off our streets after repeated arrests for guns.”

Darwin Sorrells Jr., 26, and Derren Sorrells, 22, are being held without bail on a first-degree murder charge in Aldridge’s death. The brothers have extensive criminal histories and were parolees.

CHICAGO – Chicago Public School students are being offered free rides on buses and trains on the first day of school.

The free rides on Chicago Transit Authority routes are intended to encourage school attendance. The school district’s first day of the academic year is Tuesday. CPS students and adults accompanying them that day will get to ride CTA buses and trains for free.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel launched the “First Day, Free Rides” program in 2011.

ISU school seal designed by student installed

NORMAL– Illinois State University installed a new school seal Friday to replace a 30-year-old predecessor.

The seal was designed by ISU graduate student George Barrecca under the direction of Albion Stafford. Stafford is associate director of the ceramics program at ISU’s school of art.

The 5-foot-diameter seal replaces one affixed to the wall of Bone Student Center as a gift from the Class of 1984.

Workers found damage to the seal could not be repaired.

“My boys are afraid of police just the same way I was when I was growing up,” Wade said. “Not all police, obviously. But my boys hear everything that’s going on in the world, all the harassment, all the murders that’s going on and they pose the question back to me. And what answer do I have for them?”

Wade will hold an event Sept. 17 in Miami to promote cycling safety and unity in the community, and Miami police officers plan to pedal alongside him on the 6-mile bike ride.

Lovelace attorneys want new trial date, new venue

CARTHAGE – Attorneys for a former Illinois prosecutor who faces a second murder trial in his first wife’s death have asked for a new trial date and for proceedings to be moved.

Curtis Lovelace’s defense attorneys filed motions Thursday in Adams County Circuit Court asking that the Oct. 24 trial be moved and that it be outside Adams County.

The Quincy Herald-Whig reported Judge Bob Hardwick could set a new trial date as early as Sept. 8 when a status hearing is scheduled. Lovelace’s change of venue motion wouldn’t be considered until Sept. 30 when other motions are scheduled to be heard.

Lovelace’s attorney said a new venue is necessary because their survey results show Adams County residents have prejudice in the case.

Prosecutors want the trial held in Adams County.

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Brock Turner, whose six-month sentence for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman at Stanford University sparked a national outcry, was released from jail Friday morning after serving half his six-month sentence.

The one-time Olympic hopeful swimmer walked out the main entrance of the Santa Clara County jail shortly after 8 a.m.

Turner, who kept his head down and didn’t acknowledge the media, was carrying a large packet of hate mail sent to him during his incarceration. The tall and lanky Turner appeared to be wearing the same shirt and pants he wore during his June 2 sentencing hearing, carrying his suit jacket under an arm.

A local television station followed the rented SUV that picked him up to a nearby hotel where he checked in with his parents. He plans to head to his native Ohio to live with his parents. The 21-year-old must register as a sex offender for life and faces three years of supervised probation.

Holt, Wallace among debate moderators

NEW YORK – NBC News chief anchor Lester Holt will moderate the first of three scheduled debates between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump on Sept. 26,

with ABC’s Martha Raddatz, CNN’s Anderson Cooper and Fox News Channel’s Chris Wallace lined up for the others.

The third presidential debate, to be moderated by Wallace on Oct. 19, and first will be traditional question-and-answer sessions with the journalist choosing the topics. Melania Trump story retracted after suit filed

LONDON –The Daily Mail newspaper and its website retracted a story about Melania Trump on Friday after she filed a lawsuit accusing the Daily Mail Online and a Maryland blogger of falsely accusing her of involvement with an escort agency during her modeling career.

The retraction, published on page 14 of the Daily Mail tabloid and on its popular website, said the newspaper regrets any “misinterpretation” of the Aug. 20 article. It said the story wasn’t intended to suggest that Melania Trump had been involved in escort work, but rather to raise questions about whether allegations about her past could hurt her husband’s campaign for the White House.

Hermine slams Florida, threatens the East Coast

The Associated Press DEKLE BEACH, Fla. – The first hurricane to hit Florida in more than a decade wiped away beachside buildings and toppled trees onto homes Friday before plowing inland on a path that could send it rolling up the densely populated East Coast with heavy rain, high winds and flooding.

Hermine quickly weakened to a tropical storm as it spun through Georgia and the Carolinas. But the National Hurricane Center predicted it would regain hurricane strength after emerging over the Atlantic Ocean.

The system could then lash coastal areas as far north as Connecticut and Rhode Island through Labor Day. “Anyone along the U.S. East Coast needs to be paying close attention this weekend,” said Dennis Feltgen, a spokesman for the National Hurricane Center.

In Florida, Hermine’s main impact came in the form of power outages and damage from storm surges. A homeless man south of Gainesville died when a tree fell on him, Gov. Rick Scott said.

An estimated 325,000 people were without power statewide and more than 107,000 in neighboring Georgia, officials said.

At 5 p.m., the storm was centered about 30 miles southwest of Charleston, South Carolina, and moving northeast at 20 mph, according to the hurricane center. Maximum sustained

winds were 50 mph. The system was forecast to strengthen back into a hurricane by Monday morning off the Maryland-Delaware coast before weakening again as it moves north.

Tropical storm watches and warnings were posted up and down the coastline.

Amtrak said it has canceled or altered some service on the East Coast as the storm approaches.

Back in Florida, a storm surge at Dekle Beach damaged numerous homes and destroyed storage buildings and a 100-yard fishing pier. The area is about 60 miles southeast of St. Marks, where Hermine made landfall at 1:30 a.m. in the Big Bend area, where Florida’s peninsula and panhandle meet.

Nancy Geohagen walked around collecting photos and other items for her neighbors after the storm scattered them.

“I know who this baseball bat belongs to,” she said plucking it from a pile of debris.

An unnamed spring storm that hit the beach in 1993 killed 10 people who refused to evacuate. This time, only three residents stayed behind. All escaped injury.

In nearby Steinhatchee, a storm surge crashed into Bobbi Pattison’s home. She wore galoshes and was covered in black muck as she stood in her living room amid overturned furniture and an acrid smell. Tiny crabs darted around her floor.

“I had a hurricane cocktail party last night and God got even with me,” she said with a chuckle.

WASHINGTON – Two months before Election Day, early voting kicks off next week in North Carolina, the first in a run of key states where minority voters and young adults who cast ballots in advance could give one of the White House contenders a decisive advantage.

For Donald Trump, it’s a major test of whether his recent outreach to nonwhite groups is translating into votes. In the increasingly diverse battleground states of North Carolina, Colorado, Florida, Nevada, Arizona and Georgia – all must-win states for Trump, except Colorado – it’s minorities in particular who can tip the scales.

Early voters are expected to make up between 50 to 75 percent or more of all ballots in the six states, based on 2012 figures. That’s compared to a national average of 35 percent, up from 22 percent in 2004, according to election data compiled by The Associated Press.

Mail-in ballots are popular among older, white Republicans, and party officials are betting they can bank plenty of their votes. But in several swing states, Hispanics, blacks and first-time voters typically have been more likely than whites to cast ballots early – and cast them for Democrats. Therein lies the challenge for team Trump.

Said Marlon Marshall, Hillary Clinton’s director of state campaigns and political engagement: “We can’t say this will be locked up with early voting, but it can absolutely make a huge difference.”

“Every early voter we get is one less person we need to mobilize on Election Day,” he said.

The Trump campaign says it is taking early voting very seriously – with 133 field offices and plans to add 24 more.

The campaign also is leaning heavily on the Republican National Committee to identify reliable white Republican voters in battlegrounds to mail in absentee ballots and keep his numbers up.

WASHINGTON – Hillary Clinton told the FBI she relied on her staff not to send emails containing classified information to the private email server she used as secretary of state.

The revelation came Friday as the FBI, in a rare step, published scores of pages summarizing interviews with Clinton and her top aides from the recently closed criminal investigation into her use of a private email server in the basement of her Chappaqua, New York, home.

The Democratic presidential nominee told the FBI she never sought or asked per- Hillary mission to use a private Clinton server or email address during her tenure as the nation’s top diplomat from 2009 to 2013. A prior review by the State Department’s internal watchdog concluded the practice violated several polices for the safekeeping and preservation of federal records.

The latest developments highlight competing liabilities for Clinton. Either she made a conscious effort to prevent a full public accounting of her tenure at State or she was nonchalant about decisions with national security consequences and risks. The first scenario plays into Republican arguments and voter concerns about her trustworthiness and transparency, while the second casts doubt on her pitch as a hyper-competent, detail-driven executive.

Clinton campaign spokesman Brian Fallon said Friday the campaign was pleased the FBI had released the documents.

“While her use of a single email ac-

count was clearly a mistake and she has taken responsibility for it, these materials make clear why the Justice Department believed there was no basis to move forward with this case,” Fallon said.

GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump countered that Clinton’s “answers to the FBI about her private email server defy belief.”

“After reading these documents, I really don’t understand how she was able to get away from prosecution,” Trump said in a statement.

Clinton has repeatedly said her use of private email was allowed. But over a 3½-hour interview in July, she told investigators she “did not explicitly request permission to use a private server or email address,” the FBI wrote. Clinton said no one at the State Department raised concerns during her tenure, and she said everyone with whom she exchanged emails knew she was using a private email address.

The documents also include technical details about how the private server was set up. It is the first disclosure of details provided by Bryan Pagliano, the technology staffer who set up and maintained Clinton’s IT infrastructure. Pagliano secured an immunity agreement from the Justice Department after previously refusing to testify before Congress, invoking his constitutional right against self-incrimination.

Large portions of the FBI documents were censored. The FBI cited exemptions protecting national security and investigative techniques.

Previous government reviews of the 55,000 pages of emails Clinton returned to the State Department found that about 110 contained classified information.

HONOLULU – Opening his final trip to Asia, President Barack Obama is expected to join Chinese leader Xi Jinping in announcing their countries are formally taking part in a historic global climate deal. Yet thornier issues such as maritime disputes and cybersecurity shadow Obama’s visit.

The president departed Friday for Hangzhou, China, where he will meet on Saturday with Xi ahead of a summit of the Group of 20, a collection of industrial and emerging-market nations. Environmental groups and experts tracking global climate policy said they expected the two leaders would jointly enter the sweeping emissions-cutting deal reached last year in Paris. Unlikely partners on addressing global warming, the U.S. and China have sought to use their collaboration to ramp up pressure on other countries to take concrete action as well.

Entering the climate agreement has been an intricate exercise in diplomatic choreography. The deal was reached in December, and the U.S., China and many others signed it in April, on Earth Day. Even the third step – formally participating in the deal – doesn’t bring it into force in the U.S. or China.

That won’t happen until a critical mass of polluting countries joins.

Aiming to build on previous cooperation, the U.S. and China have also been discussing a global agreement on aviation emissions, although there’s some disagreement about what obligations developing countries should face in the first years. The aviation issue is expected to be on the agenda for Obama’s meeting with Xi, along with ongoing efforts to phase out hydrofluorocarbons, another greenhouse gas.

The alliance on climate has been a rare bright spot between the U.S. and China in recent years, a relationship otherwise characterized by tensions over China’s emergence as a key global power. Washington has been deeply concerned about China’s territorial ambitions in waters far off its coast, while Beijing looks warily at Obama’s efforts to expand U.S. influence in Asia, viewing it as an attempt to contain China’s rise.

Obama, in a CNN interview, said he’d told China’s leaders repeatedly that with more global power comes more responsibility.

Before the deal takes effect, 55 countries representing 55 percent of the world’s emissions must formally join. Entrance by the U.S. and China will get the deal to about 40 percent of emissions.

Trump doubles down on illogical, un-American immigration plans It’s useful that Donald Trump has clarified his plans for Larissa Martinez, who started classes this week as a freshman at Yale University, having graduated in the spring as class valedictorian at her Texas high school. After weeks of waffling, and suggestions that his views on immigration might be “softening,” Trump has set the record straight: Martinez has no future in America.

The recipient of a full scholarship to Yale, Martinez is hoping for a career as a neurosurgeon. As it happens, she’s also a top-notch student, a compelling public speaker and, according to Trump’s policy, a high priority for deportation.

Discarding his dalliance with fairness and compassion, the Republican presidential nominee this week tossed red meat to the xenophobes in his base by reaffirming his intention to launch a crusade of mass deportations that would target, according to an analysis by The Washington Post, at least 6 million people. Among them, he said, would be immigrants who have overstayed their visas. That category would sweep up Martinez, who, at age 11, accompanied her mother and sister to the United States on a tourist visa; they stayed after the visa expired, having fled an abusive home in Mexico.

Of course, there is no place in Trump’s cramped mental universe for someone such as Martinez. To Trump and the crowds who egg him on, undocumented immigrants are criminals, murderers, rapists, carriers of disease and drug smugglers, fit to be rounded up by deportation agents and shipped far, far away.

Just why Trump would prioritize visa-overstayers for deportation, and not those who entered the country illegally in the first place, is unexplained. Logic is hardly the point of his policy. He asserts that illegal immigrants have stolen jobs from Americans and triggered a crime wave. In fact, they have met a labor market demand for low-wage workers and been a catalyst for economic growth.

Although there undoubtedly are instances of terrible crimes committed by unauthorized immigrants – as there are by authorized immigrants, and green card holders, and, it goes without saying, citizens – they are hardly the rule.

In fact, young immigrant males are incarcerated at roughly half the rate of native-born Americans. Illegal immigrants, like legal ones, generally are law-abiding and extremely hard-working.

To the GOP nominee, illegal immigrants are a useful instrument with which to whip his supporters into a froth of nativist agitation. He would hire thousands more immigration and Border Patrol agents; he would create a “special deportation task force;” he would round up the criminals whose countries refuse to accept them. He would do it all on Day One, in the first hour, the first minute, in the first fleeting seconds of his administration – by fiat, presumably, because he makes no reference to Congress or legality or judicial precedent. It all will be so fast, so beautiful, so efficient.

Believe him.

The self-contained imposter who called briefly on Mexican President Enrique Peña Nietoon on Wednesday was masquerading as Donald Trump. In fact, the real Trump is the man who has been on TV all these months, playing on hatred and fear, threatening people such as Martinez, who represent American values more truly than Trump ever could.

A difficult, but necessary, outcome in Brazil

The spectacle in Brazil’s Senate chamber Wednesday was no demonstration of high-minded civics. Dozens of lawmakers who have been charged with personal corruption voted to remove President Dilma Rousseff, who in five years in office never was accused of self-enrichment. A bitter Rousseff called it “an irony of history.” Her departure was nevertheless probably the best available outcome for a country reeling from political scandal and the worst recession in a century. It was legal; it was politically legitimate; and it opens the way for reforms that Brazil desperately needs.

Rousseff, 68, who rarely shies from populist demagoguery, has been claiming that her impeachment was a “coup” comparable to the removal by the military in 1964 of another leftist president, João Goulart. Her protestations have their own irony, in view of her government’s stout defense of Hugo Chávez’s dismantling of Venezuela’s democracy and its sweetheart deals with the Castro regime in Cuba. But they also are false. Prosecutors presented substantial evidence that Rousseff violated a fiscal responsibility law in order to keep up government social spending before her 2014 re-election. As one prosecutor put it, “we are not dealing with a little accounting problem. ... The fraud was documented.” While law professors debated whether the infractions were sufficient grounds for impeachment, the Supreme Court ruled that it was up to the Senate to make the judgment.

It is doubtless correct, as Rousseff’s defenders argue, that her fiscal violations were not the main cause of her removal. Some legislators may hope to stop the corruption investigations, which have implicated hundreds of politicians, including Rousseff’s much-lionized predecessor, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Yet what really sunk the president was her disastrous mismanagement of the economy, which included not just overspending but also a dogmatic policy of restricting contracting by the state oil company to domestic firms – the trigger for the massive outbreak of graft. As the recession deepened, polls showed that Brazilians favored Rousseff’s ouster by a wide margin.

The president’s replacement, 75-year-old Michel Temer, is not much more popular. But he has encouraged the Brazilian business community with talk of sensible reforms, including cuts in state spending and in a pension system that rewards Brazilian seniors more than their counterparts in rich Japan. Temer’s problem will be persuading the fractious Brazilian Congress, which resisted milder spending trims by Rousseff, to go along. In nearby Argentina, voters have shown a willingness to accept painful fiscal measures by a new government because they promise to stabilize an economy wrecked by leftist populism. Brazilians and their leaders will need the same fortitude if the country is to reclaim its position as one of the world’s emerging powers.

Scientists cannot say categorically that climate change caused a particular disaster, but its fingerprints are everywhere and it is almost certainly an accomplice.

The Midwest, too, is feeling the effects of climate change, although not on so grand a scale as Louisiana’s floods and California’s fires. Spring arrives sooner and winter is warmer. Perhaps we like that. But we also have killer heatwaves, destructive storms and economic shocks to agriculture from storms, droughts and late-spring freezes.

Moreover, we all pay the costs of climate change. Victims, businesses, insurance companies, and all of us taxpayers are picking up the exorbitant and growing tab for these disasters, only to do it again when the next one comes along. Wouldn’t it be smarter to address the cause?

We can reduce our personal carbon footprint, bike or walk whenever possible, switch to energy-efficient appliances and LED light bulbs, good things like that.

Many individuals, industries, cities and

states are switching to green energy because it already makes good economic sense. It can be done.

But if we are to dump fossil fuels fast enough to save the climate, we need the federal government’s help. Washington should maintain and increase incentives for green-energy innovation and use. It should end subsidies and other favors to fossil fuels and ban new exploration and production. It should discourage fossil fuel use by pricing carbon commensurate with its real cost to level the playing field for green energy.

If revenue is returned to taxpayers, a carbon fee-and-dividend is a market-driven way to accomplish the goal without regulations.

Congress is beginning to acknowledge that climate change is not a political issue, but one of survival. It is starting to search for nonpartisan solutions.

We should tell our congressmen and candidates we expect effective action and we support the fee-and-dividend as a win for the economy, environment, public health, climate and future.

Neither dictator nor king It was refreshing to moderate a “town hall” with the Libertarian presidential and vice presidential candidates last week because Govs. Gary Johnson and William Weld respect limits on presidential power.

On Sunday, when Fox’s Chris Wallace challenged Johnson’s plan to replace the IRS with a consumption tax, Johnson pointed out that he’s “not getting elected dictator or king.”

Wallace suggested that means, “Don’t take my policies seriously because they won’t get through.”

I disagree.

It means that Johnson understands that America is a constitutional republic and there are (and ought to be) checks on what presidents can do.

In response to Wallace’s comment about Johnson not taking his promises seriously, Johnson said, “Take them very seriously. Count on certainty that we’re always going to support taxes going lower ... being in business being easier, rules and regulations not getting worse.”

Trump changes positions even faster, sometimes day to day. After saying he’ll deport millions of immigrants, now he says he won’t if they pay taxes and fill out paperwork – roughly the same position Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio held when Trump trashed them.

Libertarians don’t shift to fit the whims of the day, because we have core principles. One is: On most every issue, less government involvement is better.

“Government doesn’t create jobs!” said Johnson when a young woman asked what Johnson and Weld would “do about jobs.” The Libertarians said jobs get created when government gets out of the way, imposing only a few clear and predictable rules.

While Trump makes vague promises about making government “great” and Clinton about making it “fair,” Johnson and Weld talk about getting rid of as

much of it as they can.

“There are constitutional limits to that,” Johnson said. “But if you were to wave a magic wand, there are a number of departments that come up: Commerce, Housing and Urban Development, Education, Homeland Security.”

Unlike Trump and Clinton, Johnson specifies cuts – and he’s willing to go after sacred cows such as defense spending: “You can’t balance the federal budget – something we’re promising to do in the first 100 days – you can’t do that without cutting military spending. ... The BRAC Commission, set up by the Pentagon, says that we’ve got to eliminate 20 percent of those bases, but that hasn’t happened.”

Where markets thrive, people thrive.

Weld understands that.

“When the GIs returned from World War II, they had two sets of needs, education and health care,” he said.

“Education was handled through the GI Bill, which was essentially a voucher system. You could go wherever you wanted, the most successful program in domestic political history of the 20th century. Health care was the ... opposite approach: command and control, one size fits all, the government is going to do this.”

The GI Bill vouchers allowed soldiers to enroll at a school they chose.

But for health care, they must wait in long lines at government-run veterans hospitals, sometimes dying for lack of adequate care.

Applying these free-market lessons across a range of policies, Johnson and Weld would roll back the drug war, decrease our involvement in foreign wars and give individuals more control over how their Social Security funds are invested.

When an audience member suggested that voting for a third party is a “wasted vote,” Weld replied, “We’re fiscally responsible. We’re socially inclusive and tolerant, (but) if you agree with us and you want to go waste your vote on Trump or Clinton, be our guest.

We’re Libertarians.”

Johnson and Weld don’t promise they can get rid of the Washington leviathan overnight, but taking a few steps closer to liberty sounds like a good start to me. It’s a lot better than the path the two major parties want us to take.

Spartans lose heartbreaker Come up short in 4th quarter in attempt to tie score

sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – The Sycamore football team lost its second straight game to start the season, losing to Grayslake North, 27-20, Friday night.

The Spartans (0-2) threatened late after rolling the dice and kicking the ball deep with 4:13 left trailing by seven instead of going for an onside kick. They called their last timeout, forcing fourth-and-inches from the Knights’ 47-yard line with 2:32 left in the game. The Spartans received a gift from the Knights when an offensive lineman moved prematurely as they lined up to try to convert the fourth-down play. The Knights ended up punting, netting only 19 yards on the kick.

Sycamore senior quarterback Ty Sulaver was able to lead the Spartans to the Knights’ 41-yard line before turning it over on downs. Sulaver went 9 for 24 with 138 yards passing and a touchdown – and added 10 rushes for 33 yards and a score – showing flashes of down-field throwing ability, averaging 15.33 yards a completion. However, he was erratic at times, missing an open receiver in the last drive that could have tied the score.

“Any time it’s a close game, it’s always the little things,” Spartans coach Joe Ryan said. “We have some inexperience, but at some point, that becomes more of an excuse than a reason. We don’t want excuses.”

Special teams proved to be a catalyst for the Knights. David Perez kicked two field goals – from 32 and 39 yards – and made every extra point he attempted, while also providing power on kickoffs. He had one touchback, and each of his other kicks landed inside the Sycamore 5.

“He’s great,” Knights coach Steve Wood said of his kicker. “He’s 4 for 4 on the year and good off the tee. They say everything wins championships, but special teams win championships. When you have kids on special teams selling out and working hard, it changes the game. They popped up their first few kicks and we were starting at the 45. They were starting at the 19. That’s a huge difference.”

DeKALB – History has not been kind to the Northern Illinois football team when the Huskies have opened the season on the road.

However, the Huskies look to buck a trend that has dated back more than two decades when they open the 2016 season at Wyoming at 9:30 p.m. Saturday in Laramie.

When the Huskies won, 30-27, at Iowa to open the 2013 season, it snapped a 14-game losing streak starting the season on the road that dated to 1991. However, since 2000, seven of the losses have come against Power 5 opponents.

NIU coach Rod Carey, who was in his first year when the Huskies won at Iowa, said there are advantages and disadvantages to opening a season on the road, as well at home.

“Depends if you go up there and win or lose,” he joked during a news conference Tuesday. “There are probably some advantages both times. The advantages of going on the road in your first game are you don’t have the distractions

of a home game, right? The advantages of being at home are you don’t have the distractions of, for some guys, maybe it is their first time on a plane, things like that.

Although, in this case, I don’t think it’s anyone’s first time on a plane.

“Yeah, they are different, things like that, so there are positive and negatives to both sides.

I know us, as a staff, we enjoy going on the road. We get everyone away and getting them all in one place is a nice thing. Each team is different how they take to that.

We have had good success on the road with our routine, so, overall, I’d say it’s a good thing.”

Not only are the Huskies going on the road, they also are climbing a mountain by playing at War Memorial Stadium, which is the highest-altitude FBS stadium in the country at 7,215 feet above sea level. Carey, who said he never played anywhere near that altitude during his playing days at Indiana, said there is no way to prepare for it other than additional conditioning. He

said there wouldn’t be any oxygen tanks on the sideline and that the players will be able to handle it.

Although the Huskies have been 22-4 in road games since midway through the 2011 season and the Cowboys are coming off a 2-10 campaign, Wyoming traditionally is tough at home in season openers. The Cowboys are 11-2 in their previous 13 home openers, although most of those wins came against FCS opponents.

As far as the slightly later start time, because of it being broadcast on CBS Sports Network, Carey said it wasn’t a concern.

“It will matter in the fact the guys will be anxious to play, but I don’t think it will matter when they’re ready to go to bed, because 9:30, college kids are just rolling out of bed,” he quipped. “For you and me, I’m usually in bed. But for them, I don’t think it matters.”

MUNDELEIN – For more than a year, teams have been avoiding kicking the ball to Cole Turner on special teams.

The senior receiver for the DeKalb football team gave opponents a reminder why Friday at Carmel, returning a kickoff and punt for scores in a four-touchdown performance that powered the Barbs to a 38-10 win.

“I figured they might punt to me the first time just because I haven’t gotten the ball on a kickoff or punt in a while,” Tucker said. “The second time I was kind of shocked they kicked it to me.”

The Barbs defense – dominant for the second week in a row – held he Corsairs (1-1) to a three-andout on their first possession. Tucker returned the ensuing punt 47 yards for the Barbs (2-0).

Carmel didn’t have the opportunity to kick again until the second quarter after connecting on a field goal to bring the score to 7-3 with 1:32 left in the half.

Again, they kicked the ball to Tucker, who went 89 yards this time to put the lead to 11.

Corsairs coach Andy Bitto said the plan was not to kick the ball to Tucker either time.

“I did not want to kick to him, either – let’s just put it that way,” Bitto said.

The field goal kicked off a crazy 71-second stretch in which the teams scored 24 points after scoring only seven in the game’s first 22 minutes.

After Tucker’s score, the Corsairs answered when quarterback Myles Tramill hit Joel Basara for an 8-yard scoring pass after Rondel Jamison had a 53-yard kick return that would have been a touchdown if not for a tackle by Tucker.

After the Carmel score with 44.4 seconds left, the Barbs needed only 22.2 seconds to answer. A squib kick set up the Barbs on their own 44, then quarterback Derek Kyler hit Shepherd Stapleton for a 38yard gain. A couple plays later, Kyler found Tucker for the first time on a 14-yard fade in the corner of the end zone, putting DeKalb up, 21-10.

“The end of the first half was a roller coaster of emotion,” Bitto said. “They score a big kick return after the field goal, then we make it 14-10. And if we go into halftime 14-10, we’ve got some life. Then they converted on a scramble.”

The Barbs got a field goal from Connor Tierney to start the third quarter. Then on Carmel’s second play, DeKalb’s Daniel Baggett recovered a fumble. Six plays later, Kyler hit Tucker on a slant pass over the middle into Tucker’s outstretched arms for a 31-10 lead.

“Games like this are special because we preach how special special teams are,” DeKalb coach Matt Weckler said. “That led to our early scores. When

MAPLE PARK – Kaneland quarterback Jack Douglas found four different receivers for touchdowns and then breathed a huge sigh of relief as he watched time run out on Geneva during Friday’s nonconference game.

The Knights survived for a 26-23 victory as the former Western Sun Conference foes met for the first time since 2009.

Geneva (1-1) had beaten Kaneland (20) six consecutive times dating to 2004, but the Knights were able to hold on this time, making a huge defensive stop as time expired.

Douglas had connected for a huge 36yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Alstott with 4:21 left in the game to give the Knights a 26-16 lead.

With so little time remaining, the game appeared to be weighing heavily in Kaneland’s favor, but Garret Sneed returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to pull the Vikings to within 26-23.

Geneva’s defense did its part to shut down the Knights and get the ball back, but simply ran out of time.

The Vikings appeared destined to rally for the win as they had a third-andgoal from the 4-yard line with less than 30 seconds remaining, but were stopped just inches away from scoring the goahead touchdown.

Second-half push puts G-K at 2-0

sports@daily-chronicle.com GENOA – The Genoa-Kingston football team ran away from North Boone in the second half to seal the 36-20 Big Northern Conference victory Friday night.

The Cogs (2-0, 2-0 BNC) used their strong running attack to wear down the Vikings’ (0-2, 0-2) defense by using Aidan Simmons as their workhorse.

Simmons had big night, gaining 131 yards on the ground on 25 carries and three touchdowns.

Cogs coach Bill McCarty credits his offensive line for the success Friday.

“I thought our offensive line played extremely well tonight,” McCarty said.

“We gave the ball to Aidan Simmons a lot tonight, and it starts with our front five. It’s nothing I did as a coach.”

It’s the first time the Cogs have won their opening two games since 2010.

Dan Guardi added a rushing touchdown and finished with 107 yards on 11 carries.

While finding great success on the offensive side of the ball, the Cogs’ defense came up big in key situations, including an interception by cornerbacks Zach Miller. Justin McNeal also had a pick in the end zone.

Miller’s interception came on the first drive of the game after the Vikings drove the ball 43 yards to the Cogs’ 9.

North Boone’s offense was led by receiver Nathan Nelson, who had 93 yards on seven catches and one touchdown.

“We needed those big plays on defense, because they were moving the ball on us a little,” McCarty said.

“Their quarterback can really throw the ball for only being a sophomore.

You just have to be patient so you don’t give up the really big plays, and it worked for us tonight.”

Going into halftime, North Boone was holding its own and was behind only 21-14. But in the second half, the Cogs turned to another gear on offense, and the Vikings could not find an answer for their attack.

“I was proud of my team, and Genoa-Kingston is a very good football team,” North Boone coach Aaron Sullivan said. “We knew they were going to be very fast, athletic and physical, and they don’t have a lot of weaknesses.

They’re a senior-dominated team, and they just beat us up because they’re bigger and stronger than we are. We got better this week and we played them pretty tough, I thought.”

“He’s Cole. That’s what we do,” Weckler said. “But here’s the thing.

Cole made some plays on special teams, but our offensive line and Derek made some plays, too. And then Jim Sauter made some catches and Zuerek Day played well. It was a team effort. Cole might have scored the touchdowns, but there’s a lot of things inside we did really well.”

Bitto said he never saw a game quite like the one Tucker had. “(Tucker) made four huge plays,” Bitto said. “I don’t think in my career, 19 years as a head coach, I’ve given up two scores on special teams,” Bitto said. “It changes the outlook of the game. ... You can’t give up big plays like that and expect to win against good teams.”

Bitto said he was also impressed with the DeKalb defense, which held Jamison to 65 yards on 22 carries.

Weckler said the goal was to take him away from the Corsairs, who were without starting quarterback Jeremy Strutzel after an injury Wednesday.

“We’re coming in taking him away,” Weckler said. “We were making the other guys beat us. Our nose guard and defensive tackles did a great job doing that. ... We were able to use our defensive line to take a couple things away.”

Tucker finished with four catches for 49 yards and two scores. Kyler completed 9 of 13 passes for 114 yards.

Later in the day, the Huskies also swept South Dakota State, 25-17, 26-24, 25-16 – giving Gooden 268 career victories at NIU. “In some sense, it’s a number, but it’s more importantly about all of those that wore the jersey and have been a part of the staffs here,” said Gooden, who passed Pete Waite, who

had 266 wins from 1988-98. “There have been some great names that have coached here.”

Short on memories and full of confidence, the Hiawatha football team posted a record-setting performance in a 62-0 win against River Valley on Friday in Varna.

It’s the first career win for coach Jason Keneway, and Hiawatha broke a record for points scored since at least 1996 that he helped establish. According to the IHSA archives, which date to 1996, the Hawks eclipsed their previous high of 58 points, set in 2009 against Woodlawn, when Keneway was the Hawks’ starting quarterback.

Although he joked he “wasn’t as sweaty” after Friday’s win, Keneway had the same vibe as the Hawks scored on offense, defense and special teams.

He felt last week’s blowout loss to Marquette was an aberration, as the Crusaders are a team he said is a Class 1A state title contender.

Against River Valley, the Hawks flashed the form of a team that could play late into November.

“A quick lead was essential to this game, “ Keneway said. “We wanted to jump out fast and score early and often.”

Which Hiawatha did, as Braden Watson, who switched from receiver to running back after an injury to Josh Hakes and the season-ending ACL tear on Alex Barber, made a smooth transition. Labeled the “ultimate utility player” by Keneway, Watson had 144 yards on eight carries.

On the Hawks’ first offensive play, Watson turned a simple running play into a 70-yard touchdown. One drive later, Watson had an 11-yard TD run and Hiawatha (1-1 Northeastern Athletic Conference) was up 14-0 on the Falcons (0-2, NAC).

“Even though he was pulled from running back two minutes into the second quarter,” said Keneway, who chose to protect Watson’s health with a big lead. “He still had 144 yards. He showed again how slippery he is on multiple plays. He just doesn’t give up.”

Hiawatha quarterback Ethan Hoffman rushed for two touchdowns and had a 12-yard scoring pass to Riley O’Hern. A blocked punt by Cole Dunbar was recovered for a touchdown by Harry Barrett, and the Hawks had a 27-0 first-quarter lead.

Any lingering effects of the injuries to the Hawks’ starting running backs and a season-opening loss to the NAC’s premier program vanished quickly as Hiawatha posted a 35-point second quarter – highlighted by Jacob Edwards’ interception return for a touchdown.

On defense, Hiawatha had five interceptions and five sacks.

“I’m very proud of our guys and the way they responded to last week,” Keneway said. “We are on track and we face another tough opponent with South Beloit next week. Tonight we played that quality football we’ve been looking for.”

Frazier, Sox end 4-game skid

The Associated Press MINNEAPOLIS – Todd Frazier homered for the second straight game, Adam Eaton had four hits and the White Sox pulled away to beat the Minnesota Twins, 11-4, Friday night.

Carlos Rodon (6-8) tied a season-high with seven innings pitched for his career-high fourth straight win as the Sox ended a four-game losing streak.

Brian Dozier homered for Minnesota, which ended a 13-game losing streak Thursday. The Twins have the majors’ worst record at 50-85.

Rodon wasn’t as sharp as his previous five outings when he was 3-0 with a 1.47 ERA, with each one a quality

start. He allowed seven hits, four runs – three earned – and hit two batters, but was more successful later in the game, retiring eight of the final nine hitters he faced.

Twins starter Kyle Gibson (5-9), who had given up one earned run in 122/3 innings against the Sox this season, allowed five in 52/3 innings. The righthander has allowed 30 earned runs in 392/3 innings over his past seven starts to push his season ERA to 5.31.

Leading 5-4, Jose Abreu singled up the middle on a less-than-full swing to score two runs in a three-run eighth.

Eaton had an RBI single and Melky Cabrera a two-run single in the ninth.

The Sox tied a season-high with 16 hits. They had 15 in Thursday’s 8-5 loss.

CHICAGO – When Anthony Rizzo found out the eight-year anniversary of him being declared cancer-free fell on the same day fellow cancer survivor Jon Lester was pitching, he told Lester he was going to throw a no-hitter.

He came close.

Lester pitched 72/3 innings of no-hit ball and settled for his second complete game of the season, helping the Cubs beat the San Francisco Giants, 2-1, Friday to move a season-high 40 games over .500.

It coincided with a Major League Baseball initiative that had players and umpires wearing gold sweatbands to raise awareness for childhood cancer.

“It’s a little more special for me and Rizz, just with our foundations and what we’ve been through,” said Lester, who overcame lymphoma a decade ago. “He did say the other day I was going to throw a no-hitter on the kids’ strike out cancer day. It would have been pretty cool, but glad we got the win instead.”

Hunter Pence ended Lester’s bid for a second no-hitter with a homer to left on a 1-2 changeup that cut over the plate. Brandon Crawford followed with a double, and Lester (15-4) got Eduardo Nunez to line to third. He then worked around Trevor Brown’s one-out double

Juicing not all it’s cracked up to be Dear Dr. K: Are the benefits of juicing as great as I’ve heard?

Dear Reader: Juicing – extracting the juice from fresh fruits and vegetables – appears to be the latest trend for anyone looking to detoxify, lose weight or just get healthy. But does research support the claims juicing can reverse chronic disease, jump-start weight loss and “detox” the body?

First, let’s discuss “extreme juicing.”

To cut to the chase, I don’t know of any evidence that justifies a juice cleanse or a fast in which a person drinks only juice for several days to months. Particularly if you do it for more than a few days, you could be getting insufficient amounts of protein and other nutrients.

Now let’s talk about juice. A juicing machine removes the pulp of fresh fruit and vegetables and extracts the juice. Fresh juice has been shown to have advantages over commercially packaged juice – even those that claim to be “all natural” or have no added sugars. So if you’re going to drink lots of juice, it’s best to prepare it at home, from fresh fruits and vegetables.

You safely can store fresh juice up to 24 hours in an airtight container in the refrigerator, but it’s best to drink the juice immediately, before it gets contaminated with bacteria.

Fruit and vegetable juices certainly have some possible health benefits. For example: • Kale juice may improve cholesterol levels.

• Tomato juice contains plenty of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that may lower cancer risk.

• Citrus-based juices and carrot juice may reduce heart disease risk.

But juicing removes the skin and insoluble fiber from fruits and vegetables.

The vitamin, mineral and antioxidant content of a whole fruit, such as an apple, is decreased significantly when you peel the skin.

• Insoluble fiber can promote bowel regularity, lower cholesterol, stabilize blood sugars and promote a sense of fullness. But insoluble fiber is lost in the juicing process.

• Drinking too much juice may cause weight gain.

• Excessive juice intake can be dangerous for people with diabetes because juice is a concentrated source of calories, primarily sugar.

A few words about detoxifying: What “toxins” supposedly are being removed from your body? How is juicing supposed to remove them? What’s the evidence it works? None of the websites advocating juicing I’ve visited answer these questions.

Suppose a person has lead poisoning. I can’t imagine how that toxin, or any other heavy metal, would be removed from the body by juicing. Or when advocates talk about “detoxifying,” do they mean the treatment washes “bad bacteria” out of the gut? There surely can be bad gut bacteria, but what’s the evidence that juicing eliminates them?

I have nothing against drinking freshly prepared juice from vegetables or fruits as part of a healthy diet. However, I think it would be better for your health to eat lots of fruits and vegetables every day – unjuiced.
