Georgetown to give descendants of slaves priority for admission

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University will give preference in admissions to the descendants of slaves owned by the Maryland Jesuits as part of its effort to atone for profiting from the sale of enslaved people, the president of the prominent Jesuit university in Washington announced Thursday.

University President John DeGioia made the announcement as he released the recommendations of a school committee that was created last year to study Georgetown’s ties to slavery. The university also plans to establish an institute for the study of slavery, and to create a public memorial honoring slaves from whom Georgetown benefited.

“We must acknowledge that Georgetown University participated in the institution of slavery,” DeGioia said at a campus gathering on Thursday. “There were slaves here on this hilltop until emancipation in 1862.”

In 1838, two priests who served as president of the university orchestrated the sale of 272 men, women and children for $115,000, or roughly $3.3 million in today’s dollars, to pay off debts at the school. The slaves were sent from Jesuit plantations in Maryland to

Louisiana, “where they labored under dreadful conditions,” and families were broken up, according to a report issued by the school committee.

The transaction was one of the most thoroughly documented large sales of enslaved people in history, and the names of many of the people sold are included in bills of sale, a transport manifest and other documents.

Genealogical research conducted by Georgetown and other organizations, including The New York Times, has identified many living descendants of the slaves.

The university will reach out to those descendants and recruit them to the university, and they will have the same advantage in admissions that’s given to people whose parents or grandparents attended Georgetown, DeGioia said. Universities around the U.S. have taken various attempts to atone for their participation in slavery, but several historians said the establishment of an admissions preference is unprecedented.

“We provide care and respect for the members of the Georgetown community: faculty, staff, alumni, those with an enduring relationship with Georgetown. We will provide the same care and respect to the descendants,” DeGioia said.

Facility will be closed this month to renovate the original structure

gillespie@shawmedia.com MALTA – There wasn’t enough money to pay for renovating the old Malta Township Public Library building nine years ago when the addition was put on, but recent generous donations have raised enough cash so that the work may now be completed.

The library at 203 Adams St. is scheduled to be closed all of this month so that the old library building, which was built in 1923, can get a makeover to become a bit more spacious and as aesthetically appealing as the addition that was built in 2007.

“The original thought was that everything was going to cost $500,000 to complete,” said Peggy Wogen, the library director since 2003. “But costs skyrocketed and [the addition] ended up costing $650,000.”

With that overrun, rehabbing the original 1,100-square-foot library building was put on hold – until now.

Wogen said that among the local funds donated to rehab the old building, Resource Bank gave the library some land that was auctioned this summer.

Those proceeds, together with the other money, were enough to cover the estimated $16,000 to $19,000 renovation.

Wogen said that when the addition was built, the library purchased extra carpeting in anticipation of renovating the old building. So, as part of the project, that portion of the library will have carpet installed that is identical to what’s in the new space. Energy-efficient lighting also will be installed.

Shelves and walls will be taken down and new ones installed and an employee-only work area will be rehabbed. Also, a bathroom will be reconfigured and there will be more space for the library’s computer servers. The library now offers eight public-use computers, but that will drop to six because of space, Wogen said.

Wogen said the reason for the old building’s rehab is simple: “It needs it.”

Some work already has been done, including one of the original entry doors to the old building being converted to a window. Some brick work was also done on that portion of the library.

mon to see 100 or so youngsters in the library throughout the day. With school back in session, the director estimates now that about 50 patrons

per day use the library, with several of the kids visiting after school.

The Malta library is an integral part of the small town, Wogen said.

It boasts a collection of about 20,000 books, magazines, music items and more. The staff includes seven parttime workers, including Wogen, who is a former Kishwaukee College instructor.

“It is the place to be,” Wogen said of the library. “It’s kind of like the town hangout.”

Grace Martin, the library’s tween/ teen coordinator, said the library means different things to the many different people who use it. She pointed out that for some senior citizens, the Malta library is their only connection to the outside world. Job hunters use the library’s computers to draft résumés and browse online want ads, while their children make use of the games and youth activities available, Martin said. She said that the library also is a resource for the 20 or so local families that home-school.

The library is scheduled to reopen Oct. 1, and all 3,600 square feet of it is expected to look shiny and new.

Gas prices on upswing for Labor Day

fsarver@shawmedia.com Gas prices are expected to be on the rise as usual for Labor Day weekend, but nevertheless drivers nationwide are paying 27 cents less than they did at this same time last year.

They’re also on track to pay the lowest prices for the holiday weekend since 2004, according to the American Automobile Association.

In Illinois, gas prices ticked up slightly over the past month but should come down. As of Thursday, the average price for regular gas statewide was $2.33, about a 17-cent increase from a month ago.

Prices rose in Illinois and the rest of the Great Lakes region because of issues at the largest refinery in the region, the BP facility in Whiting, Indiana, according to AAA. The issues at the refinery have since been resolved, AAA spokeswoman Beth Mosher said.

“We really expect prices to start coming back down,” she said.

Besides gas prices, Illinois Tollway officials said in a news release

NIU wrestler suspended after sex abuse arrest

eolson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A Northern Illinois University wrestler arrested this week on charges of criminal sex abuse and aggravated unlawful restraint has been suspended from the team indefinitely, a university spokesman confirmed Thursday.

McCoy Kent, 19, of the 800 block of Spiros Court, DeKalb, was arrested by DeKalb police after a warrant was issued for his arrest Tuesday on charges of aggravated unlawful restraint and criminal sexual abuse by force, according to DeKalb County court records.

The most serious charge, aggravat-

ed unlawful restraint, is typically punishable by two to five years in prison.

Kent, whose hometown was listed as Modesto, California, McCoy Kent on the NIU wrestling roster, was arrested in connection with an incident that occurred about 3 a.m. Aug. 19 at his apartment, DeKalb Deputy Police Chief John Petragallo said.

Kent had some people at his home that night but was alone with the victim, a female, when the incident occurred, Petragallo said.

“I guess what occurred was some inappropriate touching or fondling,

to which the female did not consent,” Petragallo said. “He became more forceful, and she made contact with her friends, who were able to get to where she was and get her away to safety.”

Police needed several days to investigate the incident before prosecutors with the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office approved charges against Kent, Petragallo said.

Kent appeared to have been released from police custody after his arrest, but there was no information provided on his bond amount or his next court date. A sheriff’s deputy at the DeKalb County jail said Kent was not there and had not been taken there.

NIU spokesman Joe King confirmed that Kent had been suspended indefinitely from the team, but declined to acknowledge criminal charges against a specific student, citing federal student privacy laws.

A student facing such charges would be referred to the university’s Title IX office and could ultimately face suspension or dismissal from the school, King said.

Kent redshirted last year, his first year at NIU. College wrestlers can compete on a limited basis while redshirting, and he led all redshirts last year with a 22-8 record, wrestling at 141 and 149 pounds, according to the NIU athletics website.

She loved gardening, downhill skiing, watching her grandchildren’s sporting events, making latch hook rugs, jigsaw puzzles, quilting and sewing and playing canasta and Kings Corners card games.

She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary through the Genoa Vets Club and was their treasurer for many years.

The family would like to thank the Visiting Nurses Association and Help at Home.

Frank is survived by his brother, Walt of Dallas; sister, Beverly of San Francisco; and many friends and extended family.

DAILY CHRONICLE Thomas G. Doran, Bishop Emeritus of the Catholic Diocese of Rockford, died Thursday at his home.

Doran was 80, and living at Presence Cor Mariae Center for Independent Living in Rockford, according to a news release from the Diocese of Rockford.

The diocese consists of DeKalb County and many neighboring counties.

Doran was appointed Bishop of the Rockford Diocese on April 19, 1994, and served until his March

2012 retirement.

Doran’s successor, Bishop David J. Malloy, said in a statement: “… I wish to express my own sorrow at the loss of my predecessor and friend. I express as well my sympathies and condolences to the family and friends of Bishop Doran, especially his sister Susanne. At the same time, this is a moment to thank God for the gift of such a faithful servant to Our Lord, the Church and the Diocese of Rockford.”

Doran was ordained as a priest in 1961, and had also worked as a high school teacher, according to

the news release.

Services will be held for Doran from 4 to 8 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Cathedral of St. Peter, 1243 N. Church St., Rockford.

Public viewing will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Sept. 9. His funeral Mass will be celebrated by Malloy and Bishop priests of the Rockford Diocese at 11 Thomas G. a.m. Sept. 9 at the Cathedral of St. Doran Peter.

Bishop Emeritus Doran of the Diocese of Rockford dies

No link is suspected between missing woman and Sycamore murders

eolson@shawmedia.com Illinois State Police investigating the disappearance of a Bureau County woman earlier this week announced they had found her vehicle.

Police discovered a 2007 gray Buick LaCrosse that belonged to Deborah K. Dewey, 62, of Ladd, “neatly parked” in the lot at the R-Place Family Restaurant and truck stop Monday in Morris, police said this week. Deborah K. Her keys and purse Dewey were found inside the unlocked vehicle, The Times of Ottawa reported.

The case has some surface similarity with the Sycamore murders of Patricia Wilson and her son, Robert, in which police say it’s likely the killer or killers stole a victim’s car from the house at 16058 Old State Road in rural

Sycamore and legally parked it about 60 miles away near Lincoln Park Zoo on Chicago’s North Side.

But investigators with the DeKalb County Major Case Squad, who are working to solve the killings of the Wilsons, who were found in their Sycamore home on Aug. 15, do not think the two cases are related, Patricia DeKalb County Sheriff Wilson Roger Scott said Thursday.

“From everything that we’ve seen from that case and what we know about ours, there seems to be no connection at all,” DeKalb Robert County Sheriff Roger Wilson Scott said. “But we always have an open mind about that.”

to work toward identifying a suspect in the Wilson murders, and so far they have followed up on about 700 leads, Scott said. A $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest has been offered, but police have yet to make one, Scott said.

Police found Patricia Wilson’s 2010 white Chevrolet Impala on Aug. 24, nine days after discovering the crime.

They later combed through the vehicle for evidence, which has been sent to a state crime lab for processing.

Illinois State Police are leading the investigation in Dewey’s case, which has involved an extensive search by police and volunteers by air, on foot, on the internet and in the water. But she remains missing after last being heard from through a 7 a.m. text message on Aug. 22. Although Dewey’s property was found in her vehicle, police do not know if she was the person

who drove it to the truck stop, and no people or cameras spotted Dewey in Morris, police said earlier this week.

Police have said there’s no evidence of foul play in Dewey’s disappearance, but her family members say she’s not the type to just disappear.

Family members are skeptical Dewey would have driven all the way to Morris, however, and certainly not on Interstate 88. (Although U.S. Route 6 runs through Ladd, a town of about 1,300 just northwest of LaSalle-Peru, and continues east straight to Morris about 45 miles away.)

Her son, Chris Dewey, has said he thinks she was abducted.

Deborah Dewey is 5 feet, 5 inches tall. She has gray hair and wears glasses. The family is offering a cash reward for locating her; however, they have not disclosed the amount.

Questions raised about fairgrounds group The ASSOCIATED PRESS

SPRINGFIELD – When he announced the creation of a nonprofit foundation designed to help upkeep the state’s fairgrounds, Gov. Bruce Rauner indicated last month it would be “all private money, all private management, all private control.” But records obtained by Lee Enterprises show that the administration and the Illinois Department of Agriculture played a large role in its formation.

“This is not going to be a government agency in any regard,” Rauner said in announcing the foundation on Agriculture Day at the fair.

ed that emails and other records released to the Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises newspapers under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act show that state officials have been meeting since early June to discuss the foundation and played a role in assembling the organization’s board. State officials also put together a document detailing how the foundation would function and set the agenda for a conference call with board members days before the effort was publicly announced.

“Thank you for your consideration to service on the Board of Directors of the soon to be established Illinois Fairgrounds Foundation,”

Grant Hammer, chief of staff for the Department of Agriculture, wrote in an email to board members Aug. 9, a week before the announcement.

According to the records, Hammer invited board members to an Aug. 11 conference call, and the agenda for that meeting, with “Illinois Department of Agriculture” printed at the top, begins with introductions from the governor’s office and the department.

Hammer did not comment because he said he is not authorized to speak to the media. Department spokeswoman Rebecca Clark didn’t respond immediately to a request for comment.

Chicago police: Homicides in August highest in 20 years

CHICAGO – Chicago saw its deadliest month in two decades in August, recording 90 homicides for the month, the city’s police department said Thursday.

The last time the city recorded 90 killings in a month was August 1996, according to Chicago Police Department data. Last month, there were 384 shooting incidents and 472 shooting victims, police said.

Chicago is on pace to have more than 700 homicides by the end of the year. The city hasn’t had more than 600 homicides in a year since 2003, and not more than 700 since 1998, according to records.

Ninety miles north of Chicago, police in Milwaukee said that city, which was roiled by violence recently after the police shooting of a black man, had its deadliest month for homicides in 25 years.

Milwaukee had 24 homicides in August, the highest total since July 1991. The police department said the city’s per capita rate was higher than Chicago’s in August.

Murder charges to be filed in girl’s 1991 death

MARKHAM – A 58-year-old man was to be charged Thursday with murder and kidnapping in the 1991 killing of a 14-year-old suburban Chicago girl, prosecutors said.

More than two years ago, five men reached a $40 million settlement with Illinois State Police after they were cleared of all charges in the death of Dixmoor teenager Cateresa Matthews.

The men, known as the “Dixmoor Five,” spent a decade or more in prison before DNA evidence pointed to Willie Randolph, not them, in Cateresa’s killing.

Police team up to stop holiday impaired driving

SPRINGFIELD – State and local law enforcement officials are warning motorists to “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” during the Labor Day weekend.

The Illinois Department of Transportation and the Illinois State Police are teaming up with nearly 200 local police agencies to reduce fatalities on the heavily traveled weekend.

Police officers will be conducting roadside-safety checks, patrolling for impaired drivers and setting up seat belt-enforcement zones.

Priscilla Tobias is director of the Transportation Department’s office of program development. She said fatal crashes on Illinois roads often occur late at night. Many involve drinking or failure to buckle safety belts.

Last year’s holiday weekend cost 13 people their lives. Three involved drivers with alcohol in their systems.

MIAMI – Florida has found the Zika virus in three groups of mosquitoes trapped in Miami Beach – the first time this has happened in the continental U.S. – and authorities are blaming a particular flower for making mosquito control much more difficult.

One of the traps that tested positive was at the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens, where bromeliads bloom. The plants trap standing water in their cylindrical centers, providing excellent breeding areas for mosquitoes amid their colorful flowers and pointy leaves.

“Everyone should know by now that bromeliads are really problematic for us. These are probably the No. 1 breeding area for mosquitoes,” Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez said.

Explosion at launch pad destroys rocket, satellite

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – A massive fireball and explosion erupted Thursday at SpaceX’s main launch pad, destroying a rocket as well as a satellite that Facebook was counting on to spread internet service in Africa.

There were no injuries. The pad had been cleared of workers before what was supposed to be a routine prelaunch rocket engine test.

SpaceX chief Elon Musk said the accident occurred while the rocket was being fueled and originated around the upper-stage oxygen tank.

“Cause still unknown,” Musk said via Twitter. “More soon.”

The explosion – heard and felt for miles around – dealt a severe blow to SpaceX, still scrambling to catch up with satellite deliveries following a launch accident last year. It’s also a setback for NASA, which has been relying on the private space company to keep the International Space Station stocked with supplies and, ultimately, astronauts.

Clinton Foundation gets high marks from group

WASHINGTON – A charity watchdog with an ongoing relationship with the Clinton Foundation gave the former first family’s nonprofit high marks Thursday, after an evaluation prompted by heightened interest in the organization.

The Clinton Foundation received four out of four stars – the highest rating that Charity Navigator gives after a close look at a charity’s finances. The rating is based on annual federal tax documents and an objective algorithm. It was not intended to reflect whether Hillary Clinton kept donors to her family’s foundation at appropriate arm’s length or provided favored access as secretary of state.

Some Hispanic leaders feeling misled by Trump

Some Hispanic leaders who have been advising Donald Trump say they feel betrayed after his long-awaited immigration speech that definitively ruled out a pathway to legal status for people living in the country illegally.

Trump stopped short of calling for the mass deportation of millions of people who have not committed crimes beyond their immigration offenses. But he also ruled out what he dismissed as “amnesty,” saying those who want to live legally in the U.S. will need to leave and head to the back of the line in their home countries.

“People will know that you can’t just smuggle in, hunker down and wait to be legalized,” Trump declared in his hardline speech Wednesday night.

“Those days are over.”

The language caught off guard a group of Hispanic faith and business leaders who have been advising him, often in the face of criticism from their own communities. In closeddoor meetings, phone calls and in public statements, Trump and his aides had given many the impression that he was prepared to soften his stance on immigration as he tries to court more moderate, general election voters and boost his standing with Hispanics and other minorities.

Now, some feel Trump misled them.

“There’s several of us who have gone out on a limb, if you will, to try to at least be at the table of reason with him, and that’s left us confused and disappointed,” said Tony Suarez, the executive vice president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference.

He’s been among those pushing Trump to moderate his stance.

Alfonso Aguilar, president of the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles, had prominently endorsed Trump after initially opposing his candidacy. He, too, said Trump had signaled a willingness to moderate some of his immigration plans, including limiting his call for deportations to those convicted of crimes.

“At this point, I just don’t see how I can support him. So I’m withdrawing my support,” Aguilar said. “I was expecting something very different last night. I’m not naive, I knew who I was dealing with. I knew this could happen. It was a risk.

“From a political perspective, this is the end of Donald Trump. I really think now he’s definitely going to lose.”

Trump’s campaign, however, insisted the billionaire businessman never had wa-

vered.

“Mr. Trump has been consistent in advocating for an end to illegal immigration and he will continue to reach out and work with voters from all communities to defeat Crooked Hillary Clinton this fall,” said Jason Miller, the campaign’s senior communications adviser.

Those speaking out against Trump also included Jacob Monty, a Houston-based attorney and member of the candidate’s National Hispanic Advisory Council. In a Facebook post, Monty said he was finished supporting Trump after hearing the speech.

“I gave Donald Trump a plan that would improve border security, remove hardened criminal aliens and most importantly give work authority to the millions of honest, hardworking immigrants in the US. He rejected that tonight, and so I must reject him,” he wrote, adding that Trump had at one point been moving toward a “compassionate immigration plan.”

“Tonight, he was not a Republican but a populist, modern-day Father Coughlin who demonized immigrants,” he continued, referring to an anti-Semitic priest who gained prominence as a radio personality in the 1930s. “He must want to lose. He can do that without me.”

Shifting school calendar lessens Labor Day’s importance

Labor Day might mark the traditional end of summer, but changing school calendars may have diminished its significance in that regard.

Local schools will have been back in session for more than a week as the three-day weekend begins, making the holiday more of an early break than a last hurrah for summer.

In fact, the three-day weekend at the start of September no longer rates with Thanksgiving, the Fourth of July and Memorial Day in the pantheon of big travel holidays, according to AAA Motor Club.

The national AAA organization last year discontinued travel estimates for the Labor Day holiday, concluding it is the least popular travel period of all the major U.S. holidays.

However, the fact that fewer people are traveling out of town actually might increase the probability that they will be driving on local roads – and odds are, some of them will make the ill-advised decision to do so while drunk.

During the Labor Day holiday weekend last year, which law enforcement counts as 6 p.m. Friday through midnight the following Monday, 13 people were killed on Illinois roads, according to the Illinois State Police. Three of those deaths involved a driver who tested positive for having alcohol in their system at the time of the crash.

State and local police say they will be looking for impaired drivers on local roads this weekend, with officers out in force and looking for impaired drivers or people who are not wearing seat belts.

Police in Sycamore, in conjunction with state police, will be conducting a roadside safety check in town this weekend, looking for drivers who are impaired, transporting open containers of alcohol, driving with suspended or revoked licenses, or driving unsafely, according to a press release.

An arrest for driving under the influence can really ruin a holiday weekend, as can even a ticket for failure to wear a seat belt, or the worst-case scenario, a traffic crash in which one or more people lose their lives.

Even if you’re among the growing number of people who elect to stay home this Labor Day weekend, don’t forget to take basic precautions to ensure you travel safely and protect yourself from others who might not be.

If you’re going to drink, don’t drive. If you’re riding in a vehicle, make sure you and others with you wear their safety belts. If you see a driver on the road who is impaired, call 911.

The end of summer is upon us – don’t let it end on a tragic note.

U. of Chicago takes stand on free speech It shouldn’t qualify as news when a university says it strives to be an intellectually unsafe space that encourages unrestricted discussion. Yet the current climate on American campuses virtually guaranteed that a letter from the University of Chicago’s dean of students to the incoming Class of 2020 would generate controversy.

“Our commitment to academic freedom,” reads the letter, revealed last week, “means that we do not support so-called ‘trigger warnings,’ we do not cancel invited speakers because their topics might prove controversial, and we do not condone the creation of intellectual ‘safe spaces’ where individuals can retreat from ideas and perspectives at odds with their own.”

Admirable sentiments all, yet the backlash was swift – including from the university itself, which issued a qualifying statement pointing out that professors maintain discretion in advising students about “difficult material,” while emphasizing that the college seeks to maintain “welcoming venues” for discussion. It is certainly true that professors have the right to say what they want in class, and alerting students to content that might be personally painful needn’t be more than a simple expression of empathy.

At the same time, the classroom belongs to the university, not the professor. And

while empathy is an essential human quality, attempts to institutionalize it can be ruinous.

Once rules are established, they acquire logic and momentum of their own, leading to ever more rules erected to honor ever more sensitivities. Honest intellectual debate can survive only so many roadblocks.

The situation at Chicago is reminiscent of one at Yale two years ago, when no less than the university president welcomed the incoming class with a speech about the importance of free expression. The very next year, however, the university’s institutional hypocrisy was exposed – with Yale embroiled in a pointless controversy over, among other things, the political correctness of Halloween costumes.

The fight for free speech on campus clearly has a way to go. The goal of the college experience should be to expose students to different cultures, experiences, viewpoints, even cuisines. That means universities need to exert more control over what happens not only in the classroom, but also in the dormitory and the dining hall.

Then, once they graduate, students will be better equipped to understand both their country and their place in it. The more Americans practice the art of respectfully engaging their differences, the better off America’s civic life will be.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

VIEWS Connie Schultz tributes have similarly depicted Karen Webb Boyer, his wife of 25 years, as a footnote in Gene Wilder’s life. A common sentiment on social media in the wake of his death is that finally, Gene and Gilda are together again.

I understand why this happened.

Many of us of a certain age adored Radner from her “Saturday Night Live” days. We shared a collective cheer when she married the funny, neurotic guy who charmed us in “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory” and made us howl in “Young Frankenstein” and “Stir Crazy.”

They were Gilda and Gene, those two funny, funny people we’d never met but knew so well. We want to freeze them in time, if for no other reason than it keeps us younger, too.

But it is neither accurate nor decent to diminish Karen Webb Boyer’s loss during what is surely one of the saddest times of her life. It also, quite simply, isn’t a fair accounting of Gene Wilder.

In the wake of unspeakable grief, he found hope among the ruins and the courage to love again. That, too,

is who he was – and who doesn’t need to hear that story?

In his memoirs, Wilder describes sharing with his therapist his angst over falling in love with Karen: “If the tabloids start printing stories like, COULDN’T WAIT; GENE’S HOT NEW LOVE AFFAIR! – and they will – I’ll feel terrible,” he told her. “I don’t want to soil Gilda’s name, and I don’t want to soil Karen’s name with that garbage. It’s been almost a year since Gilda died, but everyone – on the street, in supermarkets, in cabs – still asks me about Gilda and my life with her.

“They keep saying, ‘Poor Gene – we love you both.’ I’m not poor Gene; I’m lucky Gene – to have found someone at this stage in my life.”

Fortunately, Wilder’s heart was bigger than his fear. He married Karen on Sept. 8, 1991.

They wrote and recited this at their wedding: “We both believe in music and painting and the truth that we can see all around us in nature. We also believe that something, some fate, brought us together at this exact point in both of our lives. With appreciation for these exquisite insights, and with the love and respect we both feel for each other, we think we have the foundation for a happy life ... so long as we keep laughing.”

ing lessons, and she was with him throughout his cancer treatment, kissing him through surgical masks.

She was by his side during his final illness, too, when Alzheimer’s clawed him away from her.

For as long as his mind was able, he seemed never to cease marveling over the love he had found with Karen.

“As I was nearing the end of this book,” he writes on the final page, “recalling the tortures that Gilda had gone through and how she screamed and pounded on the bed, scaring the daylights out of (her dog) Sparkle and me, I remembered how I had begged her to treat me at least with the kindness that she showed to every stranger she met. With Karen, because of some accidental beneficence, which I still don’t understand, loving her each day feels almost the way it did when she and I first met.”

That right there.

That’s a love story.

First step to solve debt crisis: Stop digging

We need to control our national debt and leave a strong economy for the next generation. Yet there are no policy ideas from the campaigns to do so. We are on course to add $9 trillion to our debt over the next decade, yet neither candidate has a plan to reduce that by even one penny.

If the next president’s priorities are to help grow the economy, to preserve public investments and important safety net programs or to ensure that we are prepared for the next economic downturn, this is a huge problem.

He or she will face significant fiscal challenges. Annual budget deficits – which had come down in recent years as we climbed out of the recession – are back on the rise. Our national debt stands at 75 percent of

gross domestic product – the highest it has been since World War II – and it’s projected to keep growing indefinitely. The baby boomers are retiring, we have failed to update our entitlement programs, and interest payments are the fastest growing part of the budget. As debt keeps growing, it will slow wage growth, increase interest costs and crowd out important government investments.

In June, the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimated that Hillary Clinton would keep the debt on its currently unsustainable track – allowing it to rise from 75 percent of GDP today to 87 percent within a decade – while Donald Trump would explode the debt to 127 percent of GDP by 2026.

So, how can both candidates reverse course?

First, agree to stop digging. There should be no spending or tax reduc-

tions that are not offset. The next president should make a promise to the American people to stick to payas-you-go budgeting and not support any legislation that would make the debt situation worse. (Members of Congress, by the way, should make that promise, too.)

At the same time, neither candidate should take policy nor tax reforms off the table.

Trump has made counterproductive promises not to touch Social Security, while Clinton has made a no-new-tax pledge for families making less than $250,000. But we need to make Social Security solvent to avoid the potentially devastating, across-the-board 21 percent cut that the program is projected to face in 2034. As a starting point, the next president should look to a recent bipartisan Social Security proposal – Save Our Social Security Act – and

the recommendations of the Commission on Retirement Security and Personal Savings at the Bipartisan Policy Center. Likewise, we need tax reform that makes us more competitive, grows the economy and raises revenue – but that is not the same as tax cuts that would worsen our fiscal situation.

Political candidates find it difficult not to pander, but presidents have to lead.

The more honest a discussion they have with voters now about the types of challenges that lie ahead, the more able they will be to steer the country toward dealing with our fiscal problems as part of a sustainable and comprehensive economic plan.

Actor and writer Gene Wilder’s 2010 memoirs, “Kiss Me Like a Stranger,” begin with this author’s dedication: “To Karen, without whom I would be floating like a cork in the ocean.”

If you’ve been reading some of the many obituaries this week about Wilder, who died at 83, you might be tempted to ask: Who is Karen?

Consider this two-line reference to her in the lengthy New York Times obituary for Wilder: “In 1991 Mr. Wilder married Karen Boyer, a hearing specialist who had coached him in the filming of ‘See No Evil, Hear No Evil,’ in which his character was deaf and (Richard) Pryor’s was blind. She survives him ...”

Or this single-line description of her in The Atlantic, after the author details the death of Wilder’s previous wife, comedian Gilda Radner, from ovarian cancer in 1989: “Wilder was, by his own admission, so devastated that he largely withdrew from acting, spending his later years painting watercolors and pursuing charitable efforts largely geared toward ovarian-cancer awareness. In 1991, Wilder married Karen Webb, a clinical supervisor in lip reading who consulted with him on the film ‘See No Evil, Hear No Evil,’ and the two were together until his death.”

Church offers ‘Just As I Am’ class DAILY CHRONICLE

Kristen Lash, an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, a library specialist at Northern Illinois University, and a candidate for graduation in LGBT studies from NIU, will present a five-part class titled “Just as I Am: the Church and LGBTQ+Integration” at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in DeKalb.

Lash serves on NIU’s Presidential Commission on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and also is the co-coordinator of Transitions, a group for students and community members who are trans, gender nonconfirming, or questioning.

Each class session will be from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. Sundays, Sept. 11 to Oct. 9, in the Parish Hall at St. Paul’s.

These sessions will examine common terminology, the history of the

LGBTQ+ movement in the church, biblical interpretation, issues currently faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, and encourage discussion of how the congregation can be affirming of the LGBTQ+ community.

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, a member of the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago, recently became a Believe Out Loud Congregation, a place of inclusive welcome to LGBTQ Christians and friends.

Shively takes over at center after graduation of 4-year starter Andrew Ness

DeKALB – When Northern Illinois offensive lineman Luke Shively was red-shirted in 2014, he knew he someday could replace legendary center Andrew Ness.

Well, someday is here.

Now a red-shirt sophomore, Shively takes the reins from Ness, a graduated four-year starter, as the starting center for the highpowered Huskies offense when it opens the season at 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Wyoming.

“It definitely crossed my mind,” Shively said of the possibility of starting when Ness still was around. “I was watching him and making sure I asked if I had any questions for him. By the time he was gone, I was able to get all the knowledge from him that I could and step into this job.”

It will be the first collegiate start for Shively – Ness recorded 56 consecutive starts in his four years – and his parents, Wally and Paula, are making the trip to Laramie for the occasion. NIU offensive line coach Joe Tripodi said it’s sort of understood that there will be nerves making the first start of his career in the season-opener, but that they go away the first time he collides with a defensive lineman.

“It’s there,” Tripodi said. “I remember my first start and all the other guys – Levon (Myers), Max (Scharping), (Josh) Ruka, Lincoln (Howard) – those guys around him, that’s a good base around him. They’ve played a lot of football.”

Myers, a senior left tackle, said he wasn’t nervous when he made his first start in the 2015 season opener because of the experience he gained in 2014.

However, the main adjustment was the conditioning of playing nearly the entire game.

Since taking snaps with the first string during spring ball, Shively said the biggest improvement from then to now has been getting physically stronger. It’s

something noticed by Tripodi and coach Rod Carey.

“He had a good eight-week training cycle in the winter, and then came out for spring ball and then had another good eight-week training cycle in the summer,” Carey said of the 6-foot-2, 285-pound Shively. “He took advantage of it. Even the time off in May, he went home and you could tell he was really dedicated to the weight room. His strength is better, and that correlates into quickness being better for O-linemen and pad level being down. Pretty pleased with him right now.”

The Huskies’ offensive line isn’t only having to replace Ness and his 56 starts, but also the graduation of left tackle Aidan Conlon, who also had 56 starts.

However, both Myers and Scharping started all 14 games last year, Howard had six starts in 14 games, and Ruka – who dealt with injuries in 2015 – started in seven of the eight games he played.

Despite being the only one on the line who doesn’t have a start under his belt, Shively still has to be a leader because of his position.

“The center, out of all five of us, has to know the most because he directs us where we’re going on a play,” Myers said.

“He tells us which backers we’re blocking and that kind of thing. The center has to know the most. Ideally, we all know it as well as the center does, but since I’ve been here, the center has always been on top of everything the defense can do.”

Shively played in seven games last year, but didn’t see any action in seven of the final eight contests of the season.

He acknowledges that Ness left some big shoes to fill – he was a two-time first-team all-Mid-American Conference offensive lineman – but that the two of them are different kind of players.

He spent two years picking the brain of Ness, knowing that a time would come in which he finally would become the starter.

That time starts Saturday.

“It’s real now,” Shively laughs. “It’s mind-blowing to know it’s gone by this fast. It’s my turn, I guess.”

Scouting the Corsairs: Since making the playoffs every year between 2000 and 2011, the Corsairs have been back only once – a 2014 trip that got them two rounds deep.

DeKalb coach Matt Weckler said the team runs a triple-option offense.

“They’re a very good football team, probably one of the best we’ve played against in the last couple years in terms of size and athletic ability,” Weckler said. “They’re a very disciplined program from a very tough conference (East Suburban Catholic).”

What’s at stake: The Barbs did what they’ve done for the past couple of years on offense in the opener – put up a lot of points.

They scored on their first six possessions in the rout.

It was the defense, however, that really stood out. The starters pitched a shutout, with Dwayne Lacey (two sacks) disrupting

things all night in the Moline backfield.

But Weckler said the Maroons and Corsairs are in two very different places, so it’s hard to have any lasting effect in terms of confidence or momentum, he said.

“Our opponent this week is an established program, and Moline is still in a building process,” Weckler said. “For us to be successful against those guys, everyone will have to know their responsibilities and beat their blocks.”

Weckler said the Corsairs defense likes to put an emphasis on stopping the outside run.

Weckler said his team will have to establish its inside running game first.

Jelante Young carried the ball eight times for 94 yards against Moline, while quarterback Derek Kyler had 40 yards on seven carries and two touchdowns.

Kyler and Cole Tucker connected on the first offensive play of the game for the Barbs on a 35-yard touchdown pass. Kyler finished with 105 yards in the air (63 to Tucker). Kyler also threw for three TDs, two to Tucker.

“I think we have to play one of our best games we played as a program if we’re going to compete,” Weckler said. “We have to be able to create turnovers and execute on offense. We definitely have to be disciplined.”

“We knew Willowbrook was going to be good,” Grayslake North coach Steve Wood said. “We got off to a rough start, but we finished strong and were happy to get away with a victory.”

The school opened in 2006, winning one game total in its first three season. However, it has made the playoffs each year since 2012 under Wood, the only coach in the program’s history and an assistant football and wrestling coach at Sycamore almost 19 years ago.

What’s at stake: Sycamore needs a win to avoid a 0-2 start. Last week, the Spartans opened with a 99-yard scoring drive, but didn’t score again.

“It’s going to be a tough battle,” Wood said.

“They had a tough game against a really good Sterling team. They’re coming off a loss, it’s their home opener and it’s going to be really tough.”

Sycamore coach Joe Ryan said his team had issues running the ball and will have to improve – lead back Chris Pawola carried the ball only six times for 28 yards and was the

team’s leading rusher.

“The big thing is ball control,” Wood said.

“We have to create turnovers for the chance at victory. Their quarterback likes to run and he throws well. We’re definitely going to need an effort like we had last Friday if we’re going to win this thing.”

Ryan and the Spartans are looking to improve off their effort in the loss to Sterling.

“I’m not going to sit here and say it’s all because we didn’t do things good,” Ryan said. “Sometimes teams force you to do bad things, and they forced us to do bad things.

We certainly need to be better up front on both sides of the ball.”

Particularly, Ryan said, the team needs to preform better in key situations.

GENOA – Snapping Rockford Lutheran’s four-year home winning streak gave the Genoa-Kingston football team some momentum to start the year.

Heading into Week 2 against North Boone, the Cogs are looking to keep it up.

“I think we’ll be able to maintain that,” quarterback Zach Butler said.

“I know we’re capable of playing at a high pace like that. Just keep practicing hard and we’ll be able to do that.”

Butler had a huge game for the Cogs in a 32-30 win over the Crusaders in Week 1, rushing for 77 yards and two scores, plus throwing for 209 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions – not to mention a 92-yard kick return for a score.

“I just wanted to play like I know I could,” Butler said. “That couldn’t be possible without my teammates playing like I know they can, too. We all came out and played a great game.”

Coach Bill McCarty agreed with his QB about it being a total team effort.

“I think Zach will be the first one to tell you, Zach has a nice supporting cast,”

don’t go into a game saying we’re going to have to pass a lot or we’re going to have to run a lot. It’s just feel.”

McCarty said Butler put in a lot of extra work in the offseason, and it’s paying off now.

“It’s not just the offseason weight room,” McCarty said. “He went to Chicago and did a lot of throwing and working on his mechanics.”

Butler said the defense should be able to step up this week, and he hopes the offense plays as clean as it did in the opener.

“The offense, we didn’t have any turnovers or stuff,” said Butler, who also plays safety. “We just kept playing as a team, playing solid defense, and I know we gave up 30 points, but we got key stops when we needed to and kept fighting on offense.”

A 2-0 start would be the Cogs’ first since 2010, and they go against a Vikings team that lost its opener, 42-37, to Stillman Valley. Also, the Cogs beat the Vikings, 47-14, on the road last year.

“We just have to never be satisfied with how we’re playing and always try and strive to be better every week,” Butler said.

Spartans look to bounce back

ecarifio@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Usually, Sycamore football coach Joe Ryan said he’s able to point to either his team’s offense, defense or special teams as a particular bright spot, even in a loss.

He said that wasn’t the case after his team’s 38-6 loss at No. 5 Sterling (Class 5A) in the season opener last week. Now the Spartans are heading into their home opener against Grayslake North (1-0) looking to avoid a 0-2 start.

“We talk about being sound in all three areas, and I felt like it was the first time in a long time we got beat in all three areas,” Ryan said. “There are times we lost games because we lost an area over another, but we got beat in all three areas and we need to be better in all three segments of the game.”

The Spartans have lost their season opener three straight seasons, but in 2014 and 2015, they bounced back with wins in Week 2 and eventually made the playoffs.

The Spartans struggled on the ground against the Warriors, rushing 17 times for 49 yards. After marching 99 yards on the first drive of the game, they didn’t score again.

“We have to be able to run the ball better,” Ryan said. “We didn’t run the ball well last week. In part, that was due to us, but in part because Sterling has a good team. They played like the experienced team, and we played like an inexperience team.”

Sulaver said the team knows the importance of picking up the win against Grayslake North.

“You have to have five wins to make the playoffs,” Sulaver said, “and every win counts.”

Scouting the Vikings: Lance Arni ran for 202 yards and 19 carries and a score, plus Troy Tand and Mason Branson had interception returns for touchdowns last week.

Since Rob Wicinski took over the program in 1999, they went from a team with sporadic playoff berths – and a 0-9 campaign in his first season – to a perennial playoff team. The Vikings have qualified 11 of the past 12 years, including picking up a playoff win last year.

“We’ve seen, and having played them a few years back, we know they’re a great program and well-coached,” Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly said. “Looking at film, we know they’re another good team. They run the ball well and have a good defense. They’re special teams is good, as well – they’re good in all three phases.”

What’s at stake: Even though it’s only one game, the Knights have the area’s top rusher, passer and receiver. Sophomore Jonathan Alstott ran 22 times for 110 yards and two scores, while quarterback Jack Douglas completed 21 of 30 passes for 241 yards and two scores despite throwing one interception.

But Wicinski said he was impressed by junior receiver Josh Marczuk, who had nine catches for 133 yards and two scores.

“That receiver they have seems really

special,” Wicinski said. “The quarterback managed to get him the ball well. When he is in trouble, he went to him. And when he wasn’t in trouble, he went to him. He knew where his bread was buttered.”

Fedderly said he thought the win over Brooks was a solid start. Although the team fumbled four times, he said he hopes that is in the past.

“We worked on it,” Fedderly said. “Hopefully, well see the problem fixed Friday.”

North Boone at Genoa-Kingston

Last meeting: The Cogs rolled to a 47-14 win on the road last year.

Scouting the Vikings: They actually had a late lead against the Cardinals when Britton Morris connected with Ethan Rydell on a 10-yard scoring pass for the Vikings. North Boone reached the Stillman Valley 20 in the closing minutes, but couldn’t get any closer.

The Vikings have made the playoffs twice in coach Aaron Sullivan’s 11-year tenure. They qualified in 2012 and ’14. Between 1990 and 2005, they made the playoffs 13 times.

“They lost a lot of kids from last year, but I was very impressed with North Boone’s offense and defense,” Cogs coach Bill McCarty

said. “They could have come away with a win.

They had the ball, they just ran out of time.”

What’s at stake: The Cogs handed the Crusaders their first home loss in four years last week, and want to follow that up by taking care of business in their home opener against a Vikings team they easily handled last year.

“Hopefully, they’ll respond well because you only play nine games,” McCarty said. “It’s not like you can play 20-some and have a bad night. You have to be ready to play, and you have to bring your A game.”

Hiawatha at Midland

Hiawatha coach Jason Keneway said he had a chance to scout the Timberwolves in person because they played Saturday.

“I think this is a winnable game for us,” Keneway said. “We’re trying to redeem ourselves after our showing last week. We want to show people who we are and what our identity is, because it never really came out against Ottawa.”

What’s at stake: The Hawks will have to try to make that statement without their top two running backs – Josh Hakes still is expected to be out another two or three weeks, and Alex Barber was hurt in the first series of the opener, tearing his ACL. He’s out for the year.

“It was rough news for the kids and for Alex,” Keneway said. “It’s tough on a small team, but it’s also tough cause he’s such a good kid and he worked his tail off all offseason. He stepped into a leadership role coming from being a sophomore to being a junior this year, and it’s tough as a coach and his friend to see him go down. But there’s not an ounce of quit in his body.”

Braden Watson will move from receiver to running back. The senior rushed for 84 yards on 13 carries out of the slot last week.

Keneway said he thinks his team is better than it showed last week.

“Like I said, the score doesn’t show it, but we were one or two small mistakes away on a large handful of plays from being successful,” Keneway said. “They are such a good team with such good athletes that they expose all of those mistakes. I feel very positive this week.”

GENOA – Up eight points and three away from a sweep, the Genoa-Kingston volleyball team let Woodstock back into the match Thursday night.

But Alison Kramer came up with a kill, then a Blue Streaks hitting error gave the Cogs the win to close out the 25-19, 25-23 nonconference victory.

“We always believe in their ability to finish, and when they don’t, they’re always learning from it,” Cogs coach Keith Foster said. “But they’re gritty, and I’m really proud of how they finished that last set. Woodstock came back real strong against us, they’re a real good team.”

The Cogs (2-2) had their own 8-0 run earlier in the second game, pulling away after a back-and-forth first few points, with the Blue Streaks (3-3-1) leading as late as 4-3. The run pushed the lead to 11-4, but Woodstock got to within 12-10 and then 17-14.

The Cogs rolled off five straight points – powered by Jeanette Brann, who had a kill and two blocks on the run – to go up 22-14, but Woodstock unleashed its streak, which included four unforced errors by the Cogs.

Foster said he thought about calling timeout, but wanted to see how the girls responded. He eventually called for a break at 22-21.

“I was considering calling timeout, I had some advice from the bench, but you want to encourage them to push and see if they can do it without taking a break,” Foster said. “We’re trying to teach that mental part of the game. But they’re good there, too.”

Brann had five kills and six blocks to pace the Cogs.

“I think we played really hard and played with a lot of energy,” Brann said. “That let us push through the second set when it was close.”

The Blue Streaks featured a 6-foot3 attacker in Alex Muschong, but the 6-2 Brann helped keep her relatively in check, allowing five kills.

“Her blocking defense is so tough to get around,” Foster said. “You see the other team making hitting errors, a lot of time that’s the result of her big presence, and trying to move it around her.”

The Cogs earned their second straight win – they dropped the first game to Burlington Central on Tuesday, then stormed back to win the last two games. This time, after trailing 1-0, the Cogs scored seven straight points in Game 1 and never led by less than four.

“We had been harping on the team to come out strong, come out with momentum,” Foster said. “I thought they did just that. They had energy, they supported each other and communicated, and that’s really the foundation to our success.”

Knights’ duos sweep

sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – The strong doubles performances pushed the Kaneland girls tennis team past Sycamore in its 4-1 win Thursday.

Kaneland (1-1, 1-0 Northern Illinois Big 12) and Sycamore (2-2, 0-1 NI Big 12) had split results in their singles matches, but the Knights took care of business in doubles play – sweeping all three matches against their conference rival.

The Kaneland duo of Lauren Kardewicz and Marley Schultz defeated Sycamore’s Kiyas Kousoulas and Ellie Wilson, 6-3, 6-0, in the No. 1 doubles match. Kaneland’s Erin McMullen and Abby Purnell played a closer match against Brooklyn Scott and Kate Majerus, but still won comfortably, 6-4, 6-3. In the No. 3 doubles match, Ava Mandele and Anna Carlson squeezed out a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Sycamore’s Sky Gonia and Haley Spiewak.

“We’re very happy to get the win, of course,” Kaneland coach Tim Larsen said. “This is our conference rival and we’ve always felt that way. Sometimes they’ve had the upper hand with talent and sometimes we have, so I feel like this result could’ve gone

either way. I think, overall, we’re still looking for our sea legs, so to speak, and knock some rust off because we haven’t had a lot of matches so far.

We’re looking for some weather cooperation so we can get more matches in and get our rhythm going.”

Sycamore’s bright spot of the day came from Laurynn Mize in the No. 1 singles match. Mize cruised to victory, 6-1, 6-1, against Haley Plach. The second singles match went to Kaneland’s Liz Towell, who beat Emily McConnell-Hatch, 6-1, 6-1.

Sycamore’s struggles Thursday were narrowed down to one specific thing, according to first-year coach Jen O’Sullivan.

“We really just need to play the right points at the right time,” O’Sullivan said. “We need to hit our shots in the right spots at any given point in the match like we work on in practice.”

Although his team came out on top, Larsen shares a similar concern as O’Sullivan.

“Strategywise and positionwise, we need to tighten up,” Larsen said.

“They’re very smart girls and they’re getting to the spots quickly, but I told them, we just need to take those small successes and make them into bigger successes and run with it.”

Study links insomnia, weight gain Dear Dr. K: I’ve been suffering from insomnia for the past year or so. I’ve also gained 15 pounds over the same time period. Could the two be connected?

Dear Reader: I spoke about this with my colleague Dr. Stuart Quan, professor of sleep medicine at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He confirmed there is growing evidence of a link between obesity and insufficient sleep. The growth of this country’s obesity epidemic over the past 40 years, for example, correlates with a decline in the amount of sleep reported by the average adult. And in large population-based studies, obesity has been linked to less sleep.

But how might sleep deficiency be related to weight gain? A recent study published in the journal Sleep provides some clues. Researchers studied a group of young, healthy adults over the course of four nights. One group was restricted to 4.5 hours of sleep a night; the other group got 8.5 hours of sleep a night.

At the end of the study, the researchers measured two hormones responsible for hunger: ghrelin (which increases appetite) and leptin (which reduces appetite). In the sleep-restricted group, the ratio of the two hunger hormones was altered to favor greater appetite.

Other studies have observed the same thing. However, this study measured something more. Snack consumption – particularly items with more fat and protein – was higher after sleep restriction. And, strikingly, levels of appetite-stoking chemicals such as ghrelin were higher at the time of greater snack consumption. These chemicals also stimulate reward centers in the brain.

So not only does sleep restriction make you hungrier, it also makes the act of eating more satisfying. In the face of this one-two punch, your willpower doesn’t stand much of a chance.

Not getting enough sleep regularly is also associated with many health problems besides obesity. Difficulty thinking and depressed mood are two consequences. So is an increased risk of accidents and resulting injuries. Heart problems are more common.

Inflammation in the body is encouraged by sleep deprivation.

The immune system is affected. For example, people do not get the same protection from vaccines when they are chronically sleep-deprived. Finally, the risk of getting Type 2 diabetes may be higher – even if chronic sleep deprivation does not result in obesity.

How much sleep do we need? People are different: Some need more sleep than the average person, and some need less. For adults ages 26 to 64, seven to nine hours are recommended. For adults aged 65 or older, it’s seven to eight hours.

So I do think there is likely a connection between your insomnia and weight gain. The former could be leading to the latter – and both of them could be caused by depression and anxiety. Talk to your doctor; there could well be a treatment that would improve your mood, help you lose weight – and give you a good night’s sleep.

One of my relatives has become incontinent.

She leaks badly.

Most of the time her pants are wet. When she comes to visit, she doesn’t hesitate to sit on my furniture, and when she stands up, she causes a spot on my carpet. I’m worried my house will start to smell. After she leaves I have to go around spraying and mopping. I’m sure she wears adult diapers because after she leaves we find them in our trash. They are soaked, so I think she probably needs to change more often.

How do I ask her nicely not to sit on my furniture? I would love to suggest having her get medical help, but am afraid she would be insulted, and I don’t know how to address it.

Declarer ruffs the fourth diamond with his heart nine, plays a heart to dummy’s ace, returns a heart to his jack, cashes the heart king, and claims.
