Today’s anthem controversy tame POLL YESTERDAY’S RESULTS compared with 1971 in DeKalb

Here in DeKalb, there was a time when the controversy over playing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at sporting events extended well beyond one backup NFL quarterback.

In December 1971, with the Civil Rights Act less than 8 years old and young men still being drafted for military service in Vietnam, the song had become the source of much dissent among fans at Northern Illinois University men’s basketball games in what is now called Chick Evans Fieldhouse.

In response, Roger Nelson, who had begun as NIU’s president that August, decided that the anthem no longer would be played during the pregame ceremonies because it was causing racial tension.

Some black fans were raising their fists in a salute during the anthem, as Olympic 200-meter dash medalists Tommie Smith and John Carlos had done on the medal podium at the 1968 games. Some wanted to sing the Black National Anthem, a song called “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” after the anthem played.

“These actions, I was told, provoked counter-actions from other spectators,” Nelson said in a written statement, according to a report in the Dec. 16, 1971, edition of the Daily Chronicle.

Black and white student leaders had approached him, concerned about the potential for trouble, Nelson said.

Playing the anthem “should be inspirational, and a symbol of unity for all those who hear it,” Nelson said. “If … it becomes a symbol of divisiveness and has a potential for doing harm to the overall well-being of the university community, I believe it serves no purpose for it to be played.”

State and national media picked up the story, which became a national controversy.

The next day’s banner headline in the Daily Chronicle featured Republican Gov. Richard Ogilvie slamming the decision while on a trip to Washington, D.C. “There is something fundamentally wrong in a situation which is allowed to block an act of respect for this country,” Ogilvie said.

Nelson said the point of suspending the playing of the anthem was to keep it from being a distraction from what was expected to be an excellent men’s basketball squad. In his “Sportin’ With Stan” column on Dec. 20,

Despite the hoops squad returning home going 4-1 after a five-game road trip, the “decision to stop the playing of the national anthem before the home basketball games has gotten more ‘ink’ than the team,” Shalett wrote.

Shalett disagreed with Nelson’s decision.

He said he thought that those protesting the anthem were a minority group “no larger than the NIU-intercollegiate sports group” and that the song should be played again.

After consulting with student leaders and the Board of Regents, the pep band once again played the anthem at the fieldhouse on Jan. 4, 1972, before the Huskies upset No. 5-ranked Indiana in what ranks as one of their best basketball wins ever.

Photos from the game show a group of black students sitting together seated as it was played. A reporter at the game noted that some walked out. Many others stood.

But the students who chose to sit were doing exactly what Shalett had said they ought to do.

“If anti-establishment sentiment is so great that people refuse to stand for the national anthem,” he wrote, “those who feel that way should demonstrate their feelings by sitting.”

Forty-five years later, that’s exactly what the 49ers’ Colin Kaepernick has chosen to do. His reasons today are little different from those of the black students of decades ago, unfortunately.

We need not agree with him to acknowledge that his stance is not unprecedented, and that it’s his right to express himself – and yours to criticize him, if you choose.

DeKalb area had been without a general-interest bookseller for about 2 years

gillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A customer walked into the grand opening of a local bookstore Wednesday and shouted “hallelujah,” prompting several others to respond by clapping and cheering.

It’s a sign of just how happy some residents are to have such a bookseller back in their community.

“Book World is a very community-central company,” said Michael Scott, manager of the new store in DeKalb. “So we hope to really get to know the community in a very personal way.”

Appleton, Wisconsin-based Book World has 46 stores, including the DeKalb location now open at 858 W. Lincoln Highway, in the Junction Shopping Center. The independent retail chain also has stores in Freeport and Sterling, as well as others in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Dakota and Iowa.

Book World’s opening ends an almost two-year stretch in which the area was without a general-interest bookstore.

Barnes & Noble, which was the last previous bookseller, closed its location in the Oakland Center shopping plaza along Sycamore Road in December 2014. Before that, The Junction Book Store closed in 2002. Borders Music and More also is no longer around.

After at least a year of looking into locating here – including literally counting passing cars along Lincoln Highway, Scott said – Book World officials settled on the location in the shopping center, joining other restaurants, a wellness shop and a hair salon. The bookstore opened with 12 employees.

Book World executives “felt the traffic was high enough. Plus, we get a lot of people just walking from [Northern Illinois University] campus. So it’s nice and close for them,” Scott said.

The bookstore features more than 2,000 magazine titles and tomes – paperback and hardcover – in pretty much every major genre, Scott said.

A rewards program offers customers a discount after they’ve purchased 12 books.

Scott said that almost half of the store is dedicated to children, birth to teens. In addition to youth books, he pointed to the games and stuffed animals available. Book World also

sells music CDs and a variety of gift and novelty items for all ages.

Allia Burkhart browsed the children’s section of the bookstore, with her 6-month-old son strapped to her in a cloth baby carrier, in search of classic stories she could introduce to him.

“Reading to my baby every day is a part of what we do. To not even have a place to browse books was devastating,” said Burkhart, who lives in DeKalb with her husband and remembers when the last bookstore here closed.

She said buying books online is not quite the same as being inside a store.

“We were driving out to St. Charles to visit a bookstore, because I think you need the feel of [books] – you need to touch books and look at them,” Burkhart said.

As Sharon Green wrapped up her visit to the store, she couldn’t help but remark to other customers about how much she loves having this kind of establishment nearby. She is part of a book club, but for Green the experience of browsing the aisles of racks and racks of reading material was priceless.

“I’m delighted to have a bookstore here again,” said Green, who lives in DeKalb. “It’s a lovely store. It kind of runs the gamut – there’s everything here that you could imagine.”

Maple Park Fun Fest is a celebration to cap off summer

news@daily-chronicle.com MAPLE PARK – The Maple Park Fun Fest will hit the ground running this year.

Romp in the Park kicks off the festival activities at 8 a.m. Saturday.

Check-in time is from 7 to 7:50 a.m. for both the 5-kilometer and the 2-mile races, starting at the Maple Park & Countryside Fire Protection District, 305 S. County Line Road.

The first 100 entrants will receive T-shirts.

The annual festival, which is centered on Main Street in Maple Park, also will feature a fireworks show at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, along with live music, games, vendors and other family-fun activities.

The Men’s Slo-Pitch Softball Tournament, held on the Civic Center fields at County Line Road and Willow Street, will begin at 8 a.m.

Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

About 30 crafters and vendors will take part in a crafter/vendor show, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday along Summer Street.

Items for sale will include merchandise from Pampered Chef, Thirty-One Gifts, Bath Fitter and LeafGuard, as well as handmade crafts such as knitted and crocheted items, greeting cards and bird feeders made from collected glass, coordinator Cathy Lay said.

The third annual Mel’nBall contest, sponsored by the Maple Park Lions Club, will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday on the Community Center lawn. Judges will award winners at 11:30 a.m. The melons will be on display all day Saturday and Sunday. This year’s theme is TV shows.

The Randy Little Memorial Bags Tournament will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at North Park, a block east of County Line Road on Washington Street. Participants must be 18 or older.

Organizer Brittany Altepeter said she hopes for a great turnout again this year for the bike decorating contest and Bike Parade, open to children 14 or younger. Last year, a record-breaking 45 children partici-

Decorating begins at 11:30 a.m.

Saturday, with the bike parade starting at noon from the corner of Main and Summer streets. Ice cream from Cream King will be served afterward, and cash prizes for the most patriotic and most creative entries

will be awarded.

The parade down Main Street begins at 6 p.m. Saturday. Participating in the parade will be several high school bands, the Waubonsee Community College cheerleading team and the Beth Fowler School of Dance, as well as several car clubs and state Rep. Bob Pritchard. The parade will be held rain or shine.

Car show organizers Jason and Melissa Brady said this year’s allwheel show, held Saturday, will have 125 to 150 vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, semitrailers and a few tractors. The show is open to any class of car. Featured this year will be a Pink Heals fire truck, which

travels across the country to bring awareness about illnesses and needs that can be cured or supported by keeping fundraising money within a specific community.

Live music, food and drink will be available throughout the weekend, with Midnight Chaos and Hi Infidelity on the main stage Saturday, and the The Party Doctors performing Sunday.

The Tower Hill Stables petting zoo, face painting and a balloon animal artist will deliver children’s entertainment Saturday. The Spectacular Fireworks Show by Maple Park’s own Roger Kahl is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

OBITUARIES MARJORIE ELEANOR LEHAN Born: June 14, 1926 Died: Aug. 27, 2016

Marjorie Eleanor Lehan, age 90, of DeKalb, died peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. She was born June 14, 1926, in Compton, IL, the daughter of Henry and Mabel (Henry) Chaon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; as well as her brothers, Arthur, Wellington, Cletus; and her sister, Beatrice.

She is survived by her loving husband, James and their seven children, Timothy (Ann) Lehan of DeKalb, Teresa (Don) Hettel of DeKalb, Patrick Lehan of DeKalb, Michelle (Dennis) Freidel of St. Charles, Maria (Edward) Paine of Bakersfield, CA, Barbara (David) Hazama of Kailua, HI, and Thomas (Brenda) Lehan of DeKalb. She also is survived by 26 grandchildren, (Timothy) Kathleen Lehan, Jonathan Lehan, James Lehan, Kristy Gorsage, Patricia Lehan and Karen Lehan; (Teresa) Donald Larson, Robert Larson; (Michelle) Marie Merry, Paul Freidel, Jesse Freidel, Jeremiah Freidel, Phillip Freidel, Anna Freidel, Ruth Freidel, Timothy Freidel, Michael Freidel and Dennis Freidel; (Maria) James Paine, Raechel Paine and Elliott Paine; (Barbara) Dara Rolfe, Darci Hazama and Danielle Hazama. (Thomas) Elizabeth Lehan and Sarah Lehan. She also leaves behind 24 great-grandchildren.

Marge attended school in Compton and graduated from Mendota High School in 1944. She graduated from St. Teresa College in Winona, MN, where received a degree in business as well as a teaching certificate.

Upon graduation, she returned to Compton to work in her father’s general store. Later she moved to DeKalb and was employed by Schultz Auto Dealer.

Marjorie played an integral part at Lehan Drugs for more than 50 years, a proud member of Haish School Board, Catholic Daughters, Junior Women’s Club and This -N-That Club, all of DeKalb. With beauty and grace she humbly opened her heart and home to many in need.

The family would like to thank all of you for sharing in the wonderful life of Marjorie Lehan. And for the health care provided by Dr. Feldman, Dr. Nguyen and Kishwaukee Hospital.

Kingston man receives probation for trying to frame wife with drugs

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A Kingston man who paid others to plant drugs and a handgun in his estranged wife’s SUVin 2014 was sentenced Wednesday to three years of probation.

Nicholas T. Krengiel, 37, of the 9400 block of Wolf Road, tried to frame his wife in a plot to gain the upper hand in divorce proceedings.

He pleaded guilty to delivery of a controlled substance as part of a Nicholas T. plea agreement with Krengiel prosecutors.

Judge Robbin Stuckert sentenced him to 36 months of probation. He was further ordered to get a psychological evaluation and follow all recommendations of that evaluation, according to court records.

DeKalb police arrested Krengiel

in October 2014 after he agreed to pay a Rockford man $2,500 to put crack cocaine and a gun in his estranged wife’s Buick Rendezvous. Police received an anonymous phone call in August 2014 from a woman who said there were drugs and weapons in the Buick, which was parked in the 800 block of Regent Drive in DeKalb, court records show.

The SUV belonged to Krengiel’s estranged wife, who told police that Krengiel may have planted the 4 grams of crack cocaine and the unloaded handgun in the vehicle to discredit her.

Investigators discovered Krengiel’s friend, Raymond Delagarza, had bought the cellphone used to make the anonymous report.

Delagarza told police that he conspired with Krengiel and two others – Jamie Bork and Angel Muriel – to put the drugs and gun in the vehicle.

PLANO – U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren visited the Casey’s General Store on Route 34 in Plano on Wednesday morning as part of a campaign organized by a convenience store trade association.

Hultgren, a Republican from Plano whose 14th Congressional District includes eastern DeKalb County, including Sandwich and Sycamore, toured the gas station and kitchen area of the store and worked the counter, serving a couple customers, while talking with representatives of Casey’s about their concerns and issues.

Talking with the media, Hultgren also voiced support for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. “... My choice is I’m going to support Trump,” Hultgren said.

The Arlington, Va.-based National Association of Convenience Stores organized the event, called NACS In Store.

“This is something I love to do, to get out and see what’s going on in

the community, learn about different businesses, hearing from employees,” Hultgren said. “We heard from (NACS) that this is a program they have to allow congressmen to come in and tour, talk to some management but also with local staff, get a chance to serve some customers.

“And hear what’s working well, what are some of their frustrations that they’re facing, what are the challenges a store like this has to run, to be competitive, to really have what customers want and need.”

Hultgren said he often hears complaints from local businesses he visits about the number of government regulations they face, and that the Casey’s owners have similar issues.

have different doughnut options or different sandwich options or specials during the day. And just to hear how challenging that is and costly that is and oftentimes, how the regulation is very punitive, so it’s not just, ‘Hey, let’s work together to make sure customers have good information.’

“Boy, the store wants to do that, but a lot of things are written in a way that it’s just a ‘gotcha’ – that’s what I’m hearing from the companies or the stores I’m going to. They want to comply, they want to do the right thing, but it’s piling on where it’s regulation after regulation.”

Hultgren also reflected on his choice for president in the November election: Donald Trump.

Before the Republican National Convention, he said he was “warming” to Trump, but was not committed to voting for him.

“To me, it’s a binary choice,” he said. “There’s two choices: It’s Hillary Clinton, it’s Donald Trump. I’m not supporting Hillary; I’m not going to do anything to help her. I don’t trust her. I think everything she’s doing is about herself and her foundation and her family and her friends.

“So, very frustrating to me.

New stuff every single day, more untruth, more things that she said that are just not true. So, I’m not going to support her. My choice is I’m going to support Trump. Do I agree with him on everything? No, I don’t. But I also realize, I don’t know if there’s any other candidate, other than myself, that I agree with all the time.

Give and take, hopefully we’ll work through some of that stuff. I think he’s getting better on some things.”

Referring to the Republican nominee for vice president, Hultgren continued, “I really like (Indiana Gov.) Mike Pence, I think he’s a great choice for vice president. I really like the process Trump is going through of how he’s going to select Supreme Court justices. To me, that’s hugely important, maybe the most important thing this president is going to do, whoever it is, is Supreme Court picks.

“It will be at least two, maybe three, maybe four Supreme Court justices, and I really respect the process that he’s going through much more than Hillary Clinton. So, just in those two reasons, that’s enough for me to vote for Donald Trump.”

He also told police that Krengiel had given him the keys to the SUV along with typed instructions on how and when to plant the items.

In addition to the promise to pay $2,500, Delagarza said, Krengiel gave him $500 to buy the drugs and gun, according to court records.

Krengiel initially was charged with unlawful calculated drug conspiracy, armed violence, unlawful delivery of a controlled substance and obstructing justice, court records show. Unlawful calculated drug conspiracy is typically punishable by between six to 30 years in prison.

In exchange for Krengiel’s guilty plea to a lesser charge, prosecutors agreed to drop the most serious charges, including the drug conspiracy charge, according to court documents.

Assistant State’s Attorney Alicia Caplan said Krengiel will have to report to probation and pay fines and other costs.

SYCAMORE – Lawyers for three men charged with selling LSD to a Northern Illinois University student who later fell to his death from a dormitory window plan to meet this month with prosecutors and a judge to discuss the pending criminal cases.

The meeting is scheduled for Sept.

28, just more than a year since the death of 19-year-old NIU geology major Oluwarotimi “Timi” Okedina.

Okedina fell from the 11th floor of the Stevenson Towers residence hall Sept. 26, 2015. Toxicology reports showed he had LSD and marijuana in his system.

Michael Kielhack, 20, of the 600 block of Woodbridge Drive in Elgin; Thomas P. Quirke, 20, of the 200 block of Oakhurst Drive in Aurora; and Michael Z. Montgomery, 20, of the 1800 block of Abriter Court in Naperville, were charged with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance.

All three were arrested in November 2015, days after the final ruling on Okedina’s death and an announcement that NIU police would investigate how the student got the drugs.

The DeKalb County coroner had ruled Okedina’s death accidental last month, after a monthlong investigation by NIU police and after receiving the final autopsy information.

The three men, who were NIU students at the time of their arrests, are out on bond pending trial. Lawyers for all three declined to comment on the pending criminal cases.

Prosecutor Alicia Caplan also declined to comment on the case.

Police previously said the death was accidental and “that the presence of LSD and cannabis in his system impaired his judgment and caused him to ignore the risk of exiting the room through the window.”

The police investigation included talking to all 18 people Okedina came in contact with that day. However, Okedina was alone in the dorm room with the hallucinogenic drug in his system when he fell from the window.

Police were called to the 12-story Stevenson Towers C building – one of four that make up the complex at the south end of the university’s student housing area – about 10 p.m. Sept.

Muriel, 28, of the 700 block of Belmont Boulevard, Rockford, who police said was a part of the conspiracy to frame the woman, was sentenced to five years in prison in July. Muriel pleaded guilty to delivery of cocaine. Prosecutors dropped four other charges in exchange for his guilty plea, court records show.

In court documents, prosecutors said that Muriel organized a group of people who conspired to plant the drugs and gun.

Krengiel’s attorney, Gary Johnson, could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday.

Krengiel’s divorce proceedings were delayed, in part, by his criminal case.

The divorce case, which was filed in February 2014, is next due in court Sept. 30. Both Krengiel’s divorce attorney and his wife’s attorney could not immediately be reached for comment on the status of that case Wednesday.

CHICAGO – A judge on Wednesday dismissed a lawsuit brought by social service providers who wanted the court to force payment on contracts with the state of Illinois, saying the issue belongs in a higher court.

After brief oral arguments, Cook County Judge Rodolfo Garcia tossed the lawsuit.

Nearly 100 social service providers, called the Pay Now Illinois coalition, sued in May over fallout from the state’s unprecedented budget stalemate.

They argued the state breached its service contracts and they were owed roughly $160 million collectively for services, including health care and programs to fight homelessness.

The lawsuit named Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, who has been deadlocked on a full year budget with the Democratic-controlled Legisla-

Group asks state high court for redistricting rehearing

CHICAGO – A group that has led an effort to change how political boundaries are drawn in Illinois asked the state Supreme Court on Wednesday to reconsider its ruling that a voter referendum on the issue is unconstitutional.

The Illinois Supreme Court ruled 4-3 last week that the Independent Maps coalition’s ballot initiative seeking to give legislative mapmaking power to an independent commission instead of lawmakers didn’t meet constitutional muster. That made the measure ineligible to appear on the state’s November ballot.

However, justices didn’t rule out redistricting for future ballots. It’s the second failed attempt to overhaul redistricting by petition in two years.

The Aug. 25 ruling took place the day before an election deadline to certify fall ballots. The group needs four votes for a rehearing. They collected about 563,000 signatures for the measure.

Addiction services featured in Ill. Medicaid proposal

CHICAGO – Addiction treatment and support for long-term recovery are included in a new proposal to restructure Illinois’ $18 billion Medicaid program.

Twelve Illinois state agencies and Gov. Bruce Rauner’s office will host two public hearings next week on the proposal. It would bring in $2.7 billion in new federal money over five years if approved by Washington.

The proposal includes housing and employment services for vulnerable people, and it would strengthen prerelease services for prisoners. A pilot program would provide an injectable relapse-prevention drug called naltrexone

Prison term sought for Ill. man in photo hack case

CHICAGO – Federal court records show that prosecutors are seeking a nine-month prison sentence for an Illinois man accused of hacking into email and electronic accounts of 30 celebrities and stealing private information, including nude videos and photos.

Edward Majerczyk pleaded guilty in federal court in Los Angeles last month to one count of felony computer hacking.

Prosecutors said the 28-year-old used a phishing scheme to illegally access more than 300 email and other online accounts between November 2013 and August 2014.

His process entailed sending emails to victims that appeared to be from security accounts of internet service providers and asked for the victims’ user names and passwords. He then illegally accessed the email accounts of those who provided that private information and obtained private photos and videos.

Fire marshal probes after 2 killed in house explosion

FAIRMOUNT – The Vermilion County Coroner’s Office said two people found dead after an explosion leveled a home were a 77-year-old woman and 64-year-old man.

Coroner Peggy Johnson said in a news release Wednesday that Delores Sapp and Floyd L. Walton were killed by the force of the blast Tuesday at the house in Fairmount. The town of 620 people is about 25 miles east of Champaign.

Fairmount Fire Chief Dave Ferber said the blast “blew the house completely apart.”

Ferber said the explosion left little of the home but debris and a basement that was 5-feet deep in rubble. A column of smoke could be seen for miles.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause.

Trump vows to remove people illegally in country The ASSOCIATED PRESS PHOENIX – Seeking to end confusion over his aggressive but recently muddled language on immigration, Donald Trump vowed Wednesday to remove millions of people living in the country illegally if he becomes president, warning that failure to do so would jeopardize the “well-being of the American people.”

Yet the Republican presidential nominee failed to outline what he would do with those who have not committed crimes beyond their immigration offenses – a sharp retreat after promises during his primary campaign to create a “deportation force” to remove the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the country illegally.

Trump instead repeated the standard Republican talking point that only after securing the border can a discussion begin to take place about what to do about those who remain, ducking the major question that has frustrated past congressional attempts at remaking the nation’s immigration laws.

Yet the fiery speech was filled with applause lines for Trump’s loyal supporters, including his insistence that immigrants in the country without permission who wish to seek legal status or citizenship must return to their home countries in order to do so.

He also drew cheers when he outlined plans to create a special task force that would prioritize the deportation of criminals, people who have overstayed their visas and other immediate security threats.

“Anyone who has entered the United States illegally is subject to deportation,” Trump charged in the highly anticipated speech, which took place hours after Trump met with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto. At 12.9 percent, the U.S. now has its highest percentage of foreign-born residents since 1920. Trump argues the high levels of immigration, both legal and illegal, have injured American workers by depressing wages.

“We have to listen to the concerns that working people, our forgotten working people, have over the record pace of immigration and its impact on their jobs, wages, housing, schools, tax bills and general living conditions,” Trump said.

The aggressive tone in Phoenix marked a shift from earlier in the day, when a much more measured Trump described Mexicans as “amazing people” as he appeared alongside Pena Nieto in Mexico’s capital city.

It was his first meeting with a head of state as his party’s presidential nominee.

Shortly after the joint appearance, a dispute arose over the most contentious part of the billionaire’s plans to fight illegal immigration – his insistence that Mexico must pay to build a physical wall along the

roughly 2,000-mile U.S. southern border.

Trump told reporters during the afternoon appearance that the two men didn’t discuss who would pay for a cost of construction pegged in the billions. Silent at that moment, Pena Nieto later tweeted, “I made it clear that Mexico will not pay for the wall.”

With the meeting held behind closed doors, it was impossible to know who was telling the truth. But the clash cast a cloud over the meeting and threatened to overshadow the evening address.

Trump told the rowdy Arizona crowd that he respects the Mexican president. “We agreed on the importance of ending the illegal flow of drugs, cash, guns and people across our border and to put the cartels out of business,” he said.

Yet, standing on American soil, he addressed directly a question he sidestepped when asked in Mexico.

“Mexico will pay for the wall, 100 percent,” the New York businessman said. “They don’t know it yet, but they’re going to pay for the wall.”

The Mexican president, however, said on Twitter that the subject was among the first things the men discussed.

“From there, the conversation addressed other issues, and developed in a respectful manner,” Pena Nieto wrote.

Clinton pitches policy to American Legion

CINCINNATI – Portraying a vote for her as a patriotic act, Hillary Clinton made a vigorous appeal to Republican voters Wednesday, arguing that she would best uphold American values, care for the military and protect national security interests.

At the American Legion’s annual convention in Cincinnati, the Democratic presidential nominee called the United States an “exceptional nation,” and accused Republican rival Donald Trump of thinking that approach is “insulting to the rest of the world.”

“When we say America is exceptional, it doesn’t mean that people from other places don’t feel deep national pride just like we do,” Clinton said. “It means that we recognize America’s unique and unparalleled ability to be a force for peace and progress, a champion for freedom and opportunity.”

She said America must be a leader in the world, “because when America fails to lead, we leave a vacuum.”

The speech came as Trump made a last-minute trip to Mexico hours before he was to deliver a long-expected immigration speech. Clinton questioned the move, saying it “takes more

than trying to make up for a year of insults and insinuations by dropping in on our neighbors for a few hours.”

Clinton, who has an edge in many state and national polls, has been aggressively courting Republicans and independents who won’t vote for Trump but are still discomfited by her campaign.

She stressed to the American Legion her experience on the Senate Armed Services Committee and as secretary of state and noted her role in advising President Barack Obama on the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden,

saying she was “deeply honored” to take part.

The speech was touted as one that would emphasize “American exceptionalism,” an idea that the U.S., as an “exceptional” world citizen, has a moral obligation to advance democracy in the world rather than imposing it against another country’s will. The speech largely hewed to the theme of a country with a strong military and one that cares for its veterans – red meat to the American Legion audience.

Offering insight into her foreign policy, Clinton said that “we can’t cozy

up to dictators; we have to stand up to them. We can’t contain ISIS; we must defeat them, and we will.”

Clinton promised to invest in the military and support veterans, pledging not to privatize the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. She said the United States must modernize the military and embrace new tactics, noting that the country should “treat cyberattacks just like any other attacks” and respond through economic, diplomatic and military means.

Emphasizing her respect for service, Clinton noted her work with Sen. John McCain, of Arizona, a former prisoner of war in Vietnam, and said she would never insult prisoners of war or families of soldiers killed in combat as Trump has.

More than once, Clinton explicitly called on Republicans to get on board – both to support her plans and to defeat Trump.

“I hope you will join the growing number of Americans – Democrats, Republicans and independents – who are supporting our vision for the kind of future we want for our country,” Clinton said. “It truly is about who has the experience and temperament to serve as president and commander in chief.”

Getting tough on gun runners Sometimes, there’s no good alternative to a tough approach to crime.

Gov. Bruce Rauner and a large, bipartisan group of legislators have collectively decided that too many people are being held in state prisons and that the numbers should be reduced.

That may well be true, although one would have to go over each individual case to know for sure.

But the ugly reality of life on the murderous streets of big and small cities, such as Chicago and Champaign-Urbana, has a way of upending even the best legislative intentions and prompting elected officials to take action that appears contradictory.

Here’s an example. Last week, Gov. Rauner signed legislation passed by large bipartisan majorities to get tough on gun runners.

Blamed by law officers in Chicago for their role in the ongoing slaughter in minority neighborhoods, gun runners are those who buy guns legally in other states and then pass them to outlaws in this state.

Authorities said that more than half the firearms recovered by police in Illinois come from another state.

Indiana, Mississippi and Wisconsin are the top three states whose firearms sales affect Illinois.

This is a deadly business, one that requires a strong public response. Whether the new legislation meets the standard of effectiveness necessary to address the problem remains to be seen.

But it appears to be a serious attempt. Whether it is depends on how aggressive police and prosecutors are in taking advantage of this new tool.

Under the old law, gun runners could be charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm or not having a permit.

Under the new law, individuals found to have the “intent to deliver” face a sentence of from four to 20 years for a first offense and up to 30 years for a second offense.

What’s also important about this legislation is that it represents common ground for those on both sides of the gun issue.

Pro-Second Amendment people have no sympathy for those who buy firearms for the purpose of selling them to criminals. Gun-control advocates want to see effective criminal penalties put in the place for the same reason.

The new law won’t have any impact on what occurs in other states. But it puts real bite in the effort to discourage and penalize those who choose to traffic in firearms.

It would be nice to think that legislation of this kind would put a major dent in the problem. But no one should be so naive as to expect grand results.

This represents a small step forward on a monumental problem.

Beyond this year’s campaign rhetoric We’d like to interrupt this Illinois campaign season before it shifts into high gear with a public service message.

After November, the state still needs to be run.

The stopgap budget passed at the end of June was a Band-Aid, at best, on the state’s fiscal gaping wounds. Lawmakers still must figure out what to do to stanch Illinois’ current state of spending more than it’s taking in, and those resulting choices aren’t going to be pretty. The state’s pension obligations still are ballooning.

Think one party, either party, can fix it alone? Think again. Don’t forget that the stopgap came after lawmakers and Gov. Bruce Rauner went to the brink again after a yearlong standoff that left the state without a budget at all.

Compromise will be needed, but voters can be forgiven if the campaign rhetoric flying at the state fair’s political days has them a little disheartened about whether that can happen.

Antagonists Rauner and House Speaker Michael Madigan were at it again, with the same themes.

Rauner didn’t mention Madigan by name, but made it clear whom he meant when he hammered about a “political machine.”

“It doesn’t care about people, it only cares about power. ... That machine has taken over

the Democratic Party,” Rauner said. “That machine has taken over the General Assembly.”

Madigan, the next day, returned the favor.

“The national Republican Party under [Donald] Trump and the Illinois Republican Party under Rauner is a Republican Party of extremism.

And Illinoisans are prepared to reject extremism,” he said.

Make no mistake. While the political season is underway, no substantive work toward actually fixing the state’s problems appears to be getting done. And that is where the voters are the losers, no matter the outcome in November.

Campaigns always involve rhetoric meant to stir up the faithful. We get that. But after Nov. 8, the people saying bad things about each other still have to try to come up with solutions.

Here’s what voters can do: If you interact with a candidate, see whether he or she can come up with talking points beyond the evils of the other party. Elections are job interviews – demand that your candidates explain what they can do and how they’ll seek solutions, instead of just telling you why the other guy messed things up.

The voter’s go-to question needs to be “Why?” Candidates should be prepared to provide evidence for their positions beyond “trust us” talking points.

‘Alt-right’ has dubious claim on conservatism Hillary Clinton recently gave a speech denouncing the “alt-right,” which is news that must have a lot of you asking, “What’s the alt-right?” The answer is less important than either Clinton or the members of this group would have you believe.

They call themselves “alt” to distinguish themselves from conservatives, whom they consider weak, out of touch and boring. They find the mainstream conservative fixations on free markets, limited government, the Constitution and the sanctity of unborn human life beside the point.

Their own fixations are racial. A lot of them are pretty forthright about that.

In one of the earliest essays to identify and defend an “alternative right,” in 2010, Richard Hoste explained that the chief defect of mainstream conservatism is that it fails to take a natural racial hierarchy, “with whites and Asians at the top and blacks at the bottom,” as its organizing principle. Both government policy and, even more, our public discussions of race have to begin from that premise, he wrote.

Hoste mentioned other ideas that have continued to dominate the altright. Affirmative action unjustly subverts the racial hierarchy; “low-IQ Mexican immigration is the greatest threat to America;” whites are unjustly denied the positive racial identity that U.S.

Not surprisingly, such Republican efforts as there have been to appeal to nonwhites come in for scorn from the alt-right, which places its political hopes in a strategy of raising white racial consciousness. Also unsurprisingly, race-mixing is not very popular in these circles.

Why is Clinton taking on a group that seems so marginal? Because lately it has seemed to become a little less so. Alt-righties rejoiced over Donald Trump’s victory over mainstream conservatives in the Republican primaries –and rejoiced even more when Trump appointed Stephen Bannon as his campaign’s CEO. Bannon has been running Breitbart.com, a publication he describes as “the platform for the altright.” Critics despaired that his hiring represented an alt-right takeover of the Republican Party.

But there’s less to the alt-right’s new prominence than meets the eye. Even though both Bannon and his foes describe Breitbart.com as an alt-right site – and even though alt-righties clearly like the site more than they do, say, the

Illinois Supreme Court vote defies common sense SPRINGFIELD – “Commonsense justice” took a blow last week when the Illinois Supreme Court ruled Illinois voters can’t have a voice in amending the state constitution when it comes to how legislative districts are drawn.

The decision was written by Justice Tom Kilbride, who first was elected to the high court in 2000 with a platform of “commonsense justice” – and the support of House Speaker Mike Madigan.

I’ve known Kilbride for more than 20 years, have read many of his decisions and have found them almost universally well-reasoned – even the ones I disagreed with. And he is a genuinely nice person. I remember when my brother was dying, he told me he was praying for him. That meant a lot to me. But, man, I believe he was wrongheaded in his decision on legislative redistricting.

Madigan is a master of the dark art of drawing legislative district boundaries to ensure he hangs onto a Democratic majority in the House – and his hold on power.

For decades, he and his minions have drawn legislative districts so craftily that in most races it’s a foregone conclusion which party will represent a given area.

VIEWS Scott Reeder In fact, at my request earlier this year, Ballotpedia analyzed 2016 Illinois election filing data and found in 67 percent of Illinois legislative districts, the candidate, usually an incumbent, will run unopposed in November. In the remaining one-third of districts, the opposition is usually nominal.

Candidates don’t run because they know a person of their political party can’t win in the district where they live.

And this is how Madigan has hung onto power.

And the only way this system can be altered is by amending the state constitution.

Usually, the Illinois General Assembly has to put measures on the ballot to amend the constitution.

But drafters of the state constitution didn’t think it was a good idea to leave reforming the Legislature in the hands of, well, the Legislature itself. So they empowered voters to place measures

to reform the Legislature on the ballot through a petition drive.

And this year, almost 600,000 Illinoisans signed the petitions to allow voters to decide whether the redistricting process should be taken out of the hands of politicians.

Splitting along partisan lines, four Democratic justices ruled voters won’t get to vote on the measure.

The decision was a blow to democracy in the state of Illinois. And it gives voters yet another reason to lose faith in their state and become cynical about government.

Republican Justice Robert Thomas dissented, writing, “The Illinois constitution is meant to prevent tyranny, not to enshrine it.”

Democrat justices blocked the measure going on the ballot on technical grounds.

In its decision, the majority held that the plan to turn over the remapping process to a group mostly composed of non-lawmakers was improper because some of the power to select the re-mappers would be given to the state’s auditor general.

And, gee, the responsibilities of the auditor general are covered by a differ-

ent part of the constitution than the one being amended.

Yeah, that seems like a good reason to slap nearly 600,000 petition signers in the face.

Justice Thomas wrote in his dissent, “The majority’s ruling in this case comes at a particularly unfortunate time. In Illinois, as throughout the United States, there is a palpable sense of frustration by voters of every political affiliation that self-perpetuating institutions of government have excluded them from meaningful participation in the political process.”

Amen, Brother Thomas.

Folks are angry with the political process, and they are demanding change. Look no further than the insurgent candidacies of Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump.

The demand for change is palatable.

And yet, the Illinois Supreme Court voted not only against democracy – but against common sense.

In a democracy, voters should decide.

games and the Toledo contest gives a quasi-marquee MAC game to display – not to mention that scheduling with the White Sox made it the only real possible game to play since the Huskies final two regular season games are on the road.

The season kicks off Saturday against the Cowboys, but luckily fans have the luxury of looking ahead a little bit.

There are plenty of questions to be had for the Huskies’ nonconference schedule – which features a home opener against defending Mountain West Conference champion San Diego State – but the goal of the season is to get back to Detroit for a seventh consecutive Mid-American Conference Championship game.

Despite the label of being the MAC West champion for six consecutive seasons heading into 2016, NIU is not predicted to win the division – both by the sports media and by coaches.

With the season almost ready to be kicked off, let’s take a preseason look around the MAC.

Can Eastern Michigan shock the nation and make a run to become the MAC West champions?

No.

Can NIU figure out how to take care of Central Michigan?

The Broncos are the popular favorite to finally break the stranglehold the Huskies have had on the MAC West and Davis is a major reason why.

The 6-foot-3, 213-pound receiver from Wheaton finished with 90 receptions for 1,436 yards (110.5 per game) and 12 touchdowns last year. He’s the only returning first team all-MAC receiver and he’ll be getting plenty of attention from opponents now that Daniel Braverman (109 receptions, 1,377 yards, 13 touchdowns) is gone.

Against the Huskies last year, Davis had seven catches for 123 yards and a 72yard touchdown reception. Would you like a chance to see Davis and NIU star cornerback Shawun Lurry battle for an entire game? Yes, please.

Carey lauded Rush’s ability in the pocket and the quarterback showed why.

During the 2015 season, he threw for 3,848 yards (296 per game, second in the MAC) and 25 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. In a third quarter that swung the game against the Huskies, Rush threw a pair of touchdown passes as the Chippewas outscored the Huskies 23-3 in the quarter to open MAC play with a 29-19 home win over NIU. The Chippewas are seen as the fourth team in the MAC West behind the trio of NIU, Toledo and Western Michigan, but if they make a run for the MAC Championship, Rush will be the reason.

There was speculation if Hunt would forgo his senior season and go to the NFL, and his decision to return must have been met with groans from everyone else in the MAC. Despite playing only nine games last year, Hunt finished with 973 yards and 12 touchdowns – leading the MAC with 108.1 rushing yards per game. Hunt certainly did damage against the Huskies last year, rushing 25 times for 140 yards and two touchdowns.

Part of what makes Hunt so difficult is the Rockets’ No. 2 guy, Terry Swanson, is also pretty dang good – 923 yards (83.9 per

gaudy numbers for the defense and was named first team all-MAC for his efforts.

On the season, he finished with 144 tackles – 11 for a loss – and two interceptions. His 144 tackles were the most in the MAC, but his average of 10.3 per game was fourth in the conference.

Against the Huskies in the MAC Championship, he had 13 tackles for a Falcons, who forced five NIU turnovers.

FIVE BURNING QUESTIONS Will we see another year in which tie-breakers come into play?

Will NIU regret taking the Toledo game away from Huskie Stadium?

Field – is the Huskies topple Toledo again and NIU athletic director Sean Frazier is rewarded with a large crowd that shows his attempt to cater to the Chicago area fan base has paid off big time.

However, if the Huskies happen to lose and it allows Toledo a leg up in the race to Detroit, fans will most likely point out that they should have never taken that game away from Huskie Stadium.

The problem with that is there will be no way to prove that moving the game even affected the final score. It will instead become an easy thing to point to and blame.

The gamble is definitely worth it considering down attendance for weeknight

Since Carey took over as head coach, he is a perfect 6-0 in games against Toledo and Western Michigan. However, he is 1-2 against the Chippewas – one of two teams he has a losing record against, the other being Bowling Green – which has won two of three MAC Championship meetings.

The Chippewas snapped NIU’s 28game home winning streak at Huskie Stadium in 2014 and then added a 29-19 win over the Huskies last year in Mt. Pleasant.

The game last year was a bit wonky, with NIU quarterback Drew Hare suddenly losing the ability to hold onto the football – like a scene out of a football version of Space Jam. Central Michigan took advantage and won the game essentially by winning one quarter – 23-3 in the third. It was hard to say if the Chippewas were better since Hare doesn’t usually fumble an inexplicably three times.

It is silly to say that NIU is going to really want to beat Central Michigan this season because, guess what, every team really wants to win each game. It won’t come down if the Huskies really want to win. It will come down to if they can just play better.

Is Bowling Green still a factor?

After winning two of the past three MAC Championships, the Falcons are still the favorite to win the MAC East, but can they contend with whoever comes out of the West?

They lose some of the best offensive players in the conference – Vern Smith Leadership Award-winning quarterback Matt Johnson (4.946 yards, 46 touchdowns), running back Travis Green (1,299 yards, 15 touchdowns) and receivers Roger Lewis (85 receptions, 1,544 yards, 16 touchdowns) and Gehrig Dieter (94 catches, 1,033 yards, 10 touchdowns). That is a lot of firepower gone.

New head coach Mike Jinks takes over a program that will likely see their out-ofthis-world offense come back to Earth, but the Falcons are still the champs until somebody knocks them off the throne.

Barbs roll in victory over Belvidere

DeKalb’s record improves to 2-2

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – The DeKalb girls tennis team evened its overall record after a 4-1 nonconference victory over Belvidere on Wednesday night.

DeKalb’s record was improved to 2-2 after strong performances from singles players Hui Zhu and Karissa Olsen. Top player Zhu won her match in two sets by scores of 6-0 and 6-3 against Alondra Venegas. Olsen also cruised to victory in two sets as well, winning 6-1, 6-0.

“The girls played really well and looked good today,” DeKalb coach Brad Bjelk said. “There were some close matches in there but overall as a team everyone played really great today.”

The three doubles contests were closer than the results show, with DeKalb taking two out of three of those matches. In the top doubles match, the team of Meghan Hanson and Alyse Mommer took the first set, 6-2, against Belvidere’s Bri Williams and Nat Cortez, but dropped the last two sets by scores of 6-4 and 7-5. Emma Young and Helene Collin earned the first of two

doubles victories, beating Luzia Hernandez and Gabby Bluege in two sets, 6-1, 6-2.

The Barbs duo of Joy Kewih and Lorena Robles dropped the first set against Ivonne Aguilar and Anahi Rodriguez, 7-5, but rallied to win the final two 6-3, 6-1.

Despite only losing one match on the day, Bjelk said there’s one aspect in particular that he wants to see improve in the Barbs next match against conference opponent Yorkville.

“Definitely our first-serve consistency needs to improve and our consistency with the ground strokes,” Bjelk said. “You can’t serve to the pin and win a point. I saw too many second serves and several dou ble faults and you can’t give away points like that.”

Belvidere had a few factors that were working against them, but coach Sue Thomas would still like to see improvement from her doubles teams.

“We’re a young team with only two seniors and a number of girls absent today after getting the flu,” Thomas said. “We do need to do a better job of covering our half of the court in doubles, but we did what we could with what we had today.”

sports@daily-chronicle.com The IHSA Baseball Advisory Committee is bringing a recommendation that would put restrictions on pitch count and mandatory days of rest and it could go into effect for the 2017 baseball season.

The recommendation would put a soft cap of numbers of pitches thrown in a day to 115 – allowing players to finish an at-bat if they pass the limit in the middle of that at-bat. It also requires certain amount of rest, depending on how many pitches were thrown

in the day – with 76-115 pitches requiring four days of rest. Even after that required four days off from the mound, pitchers would only be allowed to throw 90 pitches.

“Illinois has gone above and beyond any other state in the nation,” Dr. Preston Wolin, who worked with the committee on the recommendation, said in an IHSA press release. “Not only by recommending pitch count limits with days of rest in between, but the proposed rules also provide a weekly cap on the number of pitches thrown.

The reason this is important is that while many of the models used by oth-

er states protect the pitcher, there is a potential for overuse by throwing the pitcher on multiple consecutive days even at the allowable number of pitches.”

The recommendation now heads to a committee of athletic administrators for a vote on Sept. 14, followed by a discussion and vote by the IHSA staff in September or October before finally going to the IHSA Board of Directors on Oct. 12 – which, with a simple majority vote, would become a rule for the 2017 season.

All of the pitch counts will be applied for each day, meaning a pitcher could

throw in both games of a doubleheader and his total number of pitches would be how many he threw combined in the two games. Also, according to the recommendation, coaches for both teams will meet after the second, fourth and sixth innings to compare pitch counts for each team’s players.

Postseason pitch count guidelines are identical to the regular season, except for that there is no maximum number of pitches in a pitcher’s next appearance. While the varsity pitch count would be soft capped at 115, non-varsity pitch counts would be limited to 95 in a day.

Cubs sweep Pirates with victory

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Kris Bryant hit his 36th homer and made three solid plays at third base, helping Jason Hammel and the Cubs top the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 on Wednesday night for a three-game series sweep.

Addison Russell had two RBIs and an outstanding sliding catch as The Cubs equaled the best August in franchise history with a 22-6 record, also accomplished in 1932. It was the Cubs’ first time with 22 wins in a month since it went 22-10 in September 1945.

Heading into the final stretch of the season, the Cubs (85-47) are rapidly closing in on their first division title since 2008. They begin September with the majors’ best record at a season-high 38 games over .500 and a whopping 15game lead over second-place St. Louis in the NL Central.

Pittsburgh (67-64) closed out a 4-3 trip that began with a sweep in Milwaukee.

It trails the Cardinals by 2 1/2 games for the second NL wild card.

Hammel pitched six innings of onerun ball in his first start since he was pulled in the third inning of a 3-2 loss at the Dodgers on Saturday, prompting the frustrated right-hander to meet with Joe Maddon to discuss what he felt was a quick hook by the manager.

No problems at all this time around.

Hammel (14-7) allowed three hits and struck out six after dropping his previous two starts.

The Pirates traded LHP Kyle Lobstein to the Baltimore Orioles for LHP Zach Phillips. The 29-year-old Phillips was 9-3 with one save and a 4.45 ERA in 49 appearances for Triple-A Norfolk this season. He will be assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Lobstein was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Tuesday. He was cut again by the Orioles later in the day when they claimed outfielder Drew Stubbs off waivers from Texas.

The Associated Press DETROIT – JaCoby Jones is the latest youngster to give the Detroit Tigers a boost in their push for a postseason spot.

Jones doubled twice in his second major league game, then dashed home for the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Collins in the ninth inning to lift the Tigers over the White Sox, 3-2, Wednesday.

After a day after doubling, singling and driving in two runs in his debut, Jones scored twice to help the Tigers complete a three-game sweep.

The Tigers acquired Jones last year when they traded Joakim Soria to Pitts-

burgh. Around the same time, they also traded David Price and Yoenis Cespedes, receiving pitchers Daniel Norris, Matt Boyd and Michael Fulmer in those deals.

Fulmer has become a front-runner for rookie of the year this season, and Norris and Boyd also have made contributions.

Now Jones is in the majors and off to a fine start.

Jones hit a leadoff double in the ninth against David Robertson (4-3) and advanced to third on Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s deep flyball.

Collins came up as a pinch-hitter and was able to lift the ball to left-center.

Avisail Garcia made the catch, but his throw bounced before it even reached the mound.

Francisco Rodriguez (2-3) pitched the ninth.

Jose Abreu and Alex Avila homered on consecutive pitches in the fourth for the Sox. Sox ace Chris Sale allowed two runs and eight hits in eight innings against a Detroit lineup that was without Miguel Cabrera. The slugging first baseman sat out because his right ankle had been acting up.

The Sox were without Melky Cabrera, who missed the game because of stomach discomfort.

Verlander allowed two runs and three hits in seven innings for the Tigers, striking out nine.

“I thought both of them, Justin and

[Sale], this is the kind of matchup that you expected it to be,” Sox manager Robin Ventura said.

Verlander retired the first eight hitters he faced, striking out six of them.

With two outs in the fourth, Abreu connected for his 19th homer of the year.

Avila followed with a drive to the bushes beyond the wall in center, giving the Sox a 2-0 lead against his former team.

Verlander did not allow another baserunner after Avila’s home run. Detroit scored a run on Andrew Romine’s single in the fifth, and J.D. Martinez tied it with a two-out RBI single in the eighth.

NEW YORK – NFL stars James Harrison, Clay Matthews and Julius Peppers can start the regular season without having the specter of a league investigation over whether they used performance-enhancing drugs hanging over their heads.

The NFL cleared all three players Wednesday, saying there was “no credible evidence” the players were guilty of any of the claims made in a documentary by Al-Jazeera America in January.

An NFL statement said “the investigation involved witness interviews, a review of relevant records and other materials, electronic research, and laboratory analysis and review.”

At this time a year ago, DavId Fales fended off Zac Dysert – who was signed two days before the fourth exhibition – by playing the game of his life. Against the Browns, he completed 14-of-18 passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns, finishing with a quarterback rating of 134. Fales started the season as the Bears’ third quarterback and finished it as their backup, but still never threw an NFL pass.

He has the same opportunity to stick this year, but with far less momentum.

He seemed a likely cut candidate – he didn’t play in the second or third exhibition games – until Connor Shaw suffered a grisly broken leg Saturday.

The Bears didn’t sign a fourth quarterback just for the week this time around, meaning Fales will get most of the snaps against the Browns.

The lack of playing time was “obviously frustrating,” said the third-year quarterback who didn’t even enter Saturday after Shaw was hurt.

“It’s nothing I can control,” he said.

“All I can worry about is myself, and focus on what I can do and keep trying to get better. It is frustrating. You want to go out there and play and get an opportunity.”

The lesson he learned from last year: relax.

“Just have fun and be decisive,” he said this week. “At that point, I kind of knew how the situation was panning out and I really didn’t care, and I just went out and had fun.”

He let go of his worries.

“I was enjoying the game,” he said.

“It was an opportunity to play and put myself on tape. I was just excited.

Didn’t overthink it. Didn’t make it bigger than it was.”

Do well, and Fales could stick as the Bears’ third quarterback, be it as an inactive player on Sundays or a practice squad player.

Chris Stapleton, Maren Morris, Eric Church lead with five CMA nods; Blake Shelton shut out

The Washington Post Can this year’s Country Music Association Awards do for Maren Morris what last year’s awards did for Chris Stapleton?

Morris, the 26-year-old breakout artist from Texas, tied longtime singer/songwriter Stapleton and the unstoppable Eric Church for five nods each on Wednesday morning, when nominations for the CMAs (country music’s most prestigious awards show) were unveiled on “Good Morning America.”

Stapleton, as country fans know, had a career-changing night at the 2015 CMAs, as the industry favorite stunned everyone by beating out more mainstream acts in picking up three awards – and then performed a duet with Justin Timberlake that went viral and helped send Stapleton’s music sales soaring. While a repeat of that is a tall order, Morris has a real shot to make an impact, with her hit debut single, the soulful “My Church,” nominated for single and record of the year. The Top 10 hit is from her also-nominated album, “Hero.”

Though viewers should expect big things from Stapleton again, as he’s nominated for the coveted Entertainer of the Year prize. He goes up against Garth Brooks, Luke Bryan, Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood – who, after a decade of co-hosting the CMAs with Brad Paisley, was finally recognized in its biggest category for the first time.

Though Church was left out of that race, he’s up for male vocalist, along with single, song and music video noms for his emotional track “Record Year. Not to mention an album of the year nod for “Mr. Misunderstood,” which made a surprise drop just before last year’s CMAs and was totally overshadowed by Stapleton.

Meanwhile, stars including Underwood, Tim McGraw, Keith Urban and Dierks Bentley weren’t far behind the nomination leaders, each picking up four nods. McGraw had a smash this year with the Lori McKenna-penned “Humble and Kind,” a quiet ballad that stood out among the many party songs on the radio and was nominated

DAILY CHRONICLE The Egyptian Theatre and TAILS Humane Society will welcome “America’s Got Talent” semi-finalist Todd Oliver and his “talking dog” Irving to the theater in DeKalb on Saturday, Nov. 12.

Irving, with a little help from his friend, ventriloquist Todd Oliver, will “talk” up a storm, giving a dog’s comedic take on life. The show will feature audience participation, music and comedy.

Oliver grew up loving dogs and ventriloquism. As a young boy he studied piano, guitar, voice and ventriloquism. Along the way he created some wooden headed characters and performed around the world.

Todd Oliver and Friends have been featured on “Late Show With David Letterman,” “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno,” “The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson,” “The Today Show,” and a couple episodes of “Walker, Texas Ranger,” and in 2012 they were semi-finalists on “America’s Got Talent.”

Oliver is now touring, bringing his brand of family fun to towns across America.

Erika McCall, DeKalb High School Class of 2000 alumna and author of the motivational book, “Go for Yours,” will host a comedy special on Friday, Sept. 9, at the Egyptian Theatre to raise funds to bring her Go for Yours Leadership Conference to DeKalb.

The Go for Yours Comedy Show lineup will include appearances by Rashida “Sheedz” Olayiwola, Eljae Brown and DC Ervin, with music by DJ Rated AG. The show will honor fellow DeKalb natives for accomplishments in their careers, including Michelle Cho, an executive with the Humane Society of the United States, writer Melissa Blake, and Jonathan Thompson, owner of Roc’s Barbershop. Honorees will share how growing up in the heartland helped shape their success.

McCall is the executive director of actor Hill Harper’s Manifest Your Destiny Foundation in Los Angeles. MYD provides enrichment programs for young people and focuses on the development of critical thinking, reading comprehension, life skills, self-awareness, and quality interaction between youth and mentors. In her role, McCall has expanded the foundation’s program and services to Washington, D.C. and Baltimore.

The Ellwood House Association will host Wine on the Terrace from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10.

Inboden’s of DeKalb, a local specialty food market and wine merchant, is again partnering with the Ellwood House for this event and will serve an array of fine wines and unique appetizers on and around the Ellwood mansion terrace. As visitors linger on the terrace sipping a selection of wines, they will enjoy music performed by classical guitarist Quentin Dover.

Guests can take a self-guided first floor tour of the Ellwood mansion, view the exhibits on display in the Visitor Center (where desserts and coffee will be available), or tour the gardens. A silent auction and raffle of elegant offerings and gift certificates will take place throughout the evening.

Fall Literacy Conference features children’s authors DAILY CHRONICLE The Northern Illinois Reading Council will host its Fall Literacy Conference from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Sept. 15, at Kishwaukee College in Malta.

This is an opportunity for area educators, preservice teachers, librarians and community members to hear two award-winning children’s authors.

The featured speakers are Candace Fleming and Sally Walker and their presentations will focus on nonfiction.

Fleming is the author of more than 30 books for children, including “The Lincolns: A Scrapbook

Look at Abraham and Mary” and “The Great and Only Barnum: The Tremendous, Stupendous Life of Showman P.T. Barnum.” Her newest nonfiction book, “Presenting Buffalo Bill,” will be published in fall 2016. Fleming’s interactive presentation is titled, “Hook, Hold and Haunt: Writing Great Nonfiction with Kids.”

Sally Walker is the author of more than 50 award-winning nonfiction books for children, including “Secrets of a Civil War Submarine,” “Written in Bone” and “Blizzard of Glass.” Her newest book, “Winnie,” tells the true story of the Canadian bear who inspired A.A. Milne to write “Winnie-the-

Pooh.” Walker’s presentation is titled “Worms and Burned Thumbs: Making Research Fun for Kids.”

In addition to the presentations, there will be raffle prizes, shopping at the Anderson’s Bookstore exhibit and an autograph session for both authors.

Symptoms of mumps infection may include fever, headache, sore throat, muscle aches, poor appetite and malaise (a general feeling of sickness). As I mentioned, the mumps virus causes pain and swelling of the parotid glands in front of the earlobes; the swelling is called parotitis. This can make chewing and swallowing very uncomfortable.

Mumps parotitis can occur very rapidly.

I know, and not just because I’m a doctor, but because I’ve had it. One afternoon I felt lousy: my muscles ached, my energy was poor and I didn’t feel much like dinner. I went to bed early. Sometime in the middle of the night I woke up because it felt like my face was resting on a walnut someone had placed on the mattress. The “walnut” was my parotid gland. Fortunately, I recovered without more serious complications.

By getting the mumps vaccine, your son has greatly reduced his risk of ever getting the mumps. The vaccine is not perfect, and so his risk is not zero. But you can tell him from me: Be grateful there’s a vaccine. The virus got me before there was a vaccine – and it was no fun.

Dear Dr. K: A few students at my son’s college have been diagnosed with mumps. My son has had all of his vaccines, including the MMR. Could he still get mumps?

Dear Reader: Mumps is an infection that causes swelling of the parotid glands in front of each ear. It is caused by a virus that spreads from person to person through coughs, sneezes and saliva. It also can spread through contact with contaminated items and surfaces. Once the mumps virus enters the body, it passes into the bloodstream and can spread to many different glands, as well as the brain.

People with mumps are contagious during a period that begins 48 hours before and ends six to nine days after the beginning of symptoms.

Thanks to the mumps vaccine, which was introduced in the 1960s, the number of annual cases has decreased by more than 99 percent. The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is given in two doses.

The first dose is given at 12 through 15 months of age. The second dose is given at 4 through 6 years of age.

The vaccine prevents most, but not all, cases of mumps and complications caused by the disease. People who have received two doses of the MMR vaccine are about nine times less likely to get mumps than unvaccinated people. However, some people who received two doses of MMR still can get mumps, especially if they have prolonged close contact with someone who has the disease. Still, a vaccinated person who gets mumps will likely have less severe illness than an unvaccinated person.

In about 15 to 20 percent of patients, mumps does not cause any symptoms.

Each suit in a deck of cards contains five honors: ace, king, queen, jack and 10. It also has nine spotcards, the 10 doing double duty. The honors win most of the tricks, but having useful spot-cards, especially those 10s and nines, may be critical to success for one side or the other.

In this deal, North barrels his partner into six spades. How should South plan the play after West leads the heart jack to dummy’s ace?

North’s auction was unscientific, but could you and your partner have checked the club situation?

When the dummy came down, declarer realized that he had to hold his club losers to one, which looked difficult with no useful spot-cards. It was unlikely that West had the king and queen, because he probably would have led the club king, not the heart jack. South hoped that East had a singleton or doubleton king or queen. (Yes, West might have had doubleton king-10 or queen-10, but South would have had to guess correctly if West unblocked his royal on the first round of the suit.)

Declarer cashed dummy’s spade ace and took his three red-suit winners. Then he played a club to dummy’s ace. No honor appeared, but South returned to his hand with a spade and led another club, covering West’s 10 with dummy’s jack. Yes, it lost to East’s king, but on his red-suit return, declarer sluffed his last club and ruffed on the board.

Since the 19th century, candy containers have been made to attract buyers. Figural glass bottles were first made in the shape of the Liberty Bell in 1876.

Papier-mache animals with removable heads and hollow stomachs, and lithographed tin boxes, pails and even figural tins were used later. All of these are collected today and some sell for hundreds of dollars. Canco is the name found on a series of lithographed tin pails that held candy by Lovell & Covell, a candy company in Fulton, Mass. The pails are decorated with nursery-rhyme figures. The Queen of Hearts, Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood and Peter Cottontail are the easiest to find in the series. In excellent condition, they retail for over $100.

The Canco mark was used from 1910 to 1921 by the American Can Company, a 1901 firm. If vintage candy containers are not modern enough to be of interest, consider the most popular candy container collected now, the container and dispenser for Pez. The first ones were made in 1949 and thousands of different heads have been used on other Pez dispensers. *** Q: I have an old kerosene lamp, only used when we had power outages, and not used for a long time. The oil burner needs to be removed to fill with the kerosene. The kerosene seems to have jelled and the burner can’t be easily unscrewed.

The glass bowl seems to have a brown stain inside. Any recommendations for solvent or cleaner to safely dissolve the jell and clean the interior?

A: Kerosene will leave a waxy residue if left too long in a lamp that isn’t used frequently. You can use gasoline to dissolve the “jelled” deposit, but first you have to be able to unscrew the burner. Try wiping the part where it connects to the font with a rag dipped in gasoline. Then fill the lamp with gasoline and leave it overnight. In the morning, swirl the gasoline around and empty it (Don’t pour it down the sink drain.

Put it in a closed container and take it to a place that does oil changes. They can dispose of it safely.) Make sure the lamp is dry before refilling it with kerosene. You may be able to clean the bowl by filling it with very hot water.

They went out of business in the 1970s, as cufflinks slowly lost popularity until the early 2000s. Costume jewelry and curvy links are very inexpensive, often selling for about $10. A: Ivorex plaques were made by the Arthur B. Osborne Co. in Faversham, Kent, England. The company was in business from 1899 to 1965. The plaques were made of a material he called “sterine wax.” Plaster of Paris was poured into clay molds to make three-dimensional pictures, which were hand-painted and dipped in wax to finish them. W.H. Bossons Ltd. bought the company in 1971 and made plaques from 1980 to 1996, when that company closed. They are not popular with collectors in the U.S., but some sell in England.
