Keeping green monster at bay At times, jealousy has to do with monetary “stuff.”

Sometimes, it even has to do with love.

There have been times where I think situations are unfair.

I have often wondered why one person gets the short end of the stick and the other receives the entire branch with leaves.

This time my jealousy has nothing to do with money or love.

Succumbing to the ugly green monster has left me struggling with my choices. For nearly two and half years, I have had to deal with this monster.

It creeps up in early August.

You see it has to do with me being a teacher also known as a working mother. This year, the green slowly emerged while I was browsing through Facebook.

Seeing posts of the stay-at-home moms having every opportunity to do as they please with their children really started to irk me.

I saw an entire mothers club planning a trip to Jonamac for opening day. Advertising the fact that they get to eat apple doughnuts and slurp apple cider slushies while their kids play.

Oh, how I wish that was me. Seeing photos of toddlers napping on the couch or in their mothers’ arms.

Mothers and fathers able to take their kids to their first day of school. Taking photos and crying as they leave their side.

These types of moments I will not get to experience.

I am so envious that it is not my daughter and me. All of these posts get to my tender heart.

My heart hurts even more because Hannah Jo also realizes that I am a working mom. While getting ready in the morning, she will either say, “Mama and Daddy going

to work,” or “Why do you go to work?”

My heart crumbles into tiny pieces. A 21/2-year-old doesn’t understand why we have to leave her at the baby sitter while we go to work, but I sure do.

I question how life would be if I didn’ t work. Would life be better or worse? I mean I would be able to have those moments I have seen captured on Facebook. Hannah Jo wouldn’ t be saying those sad statements before heading off to day care. And I would get to sleep in.

But who am I kidding?

Life would be rough. We wouldn’t be able to do anything but literally survive. Paying off college loans, a mortgage, credit card bills and car payments.

I need to work so my family can thrive.

I would really like to whoop the ugly green monster back into its cave. Although I realize that ugly green monster really needs a hug!

It needs to understand that I am teaching because I want to make a difference. It needs to understand that I am working so that my family can achieve goals.

I need to understand that even though green looks good on me, I have to remember the big picture.

Experts: About 3 times as many cases as normal seen this summer Signs a raccoon is sick

eolson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – An ailment known for making raccoons act like zombies is spreading among the local population, specifically in DeKalb, local wildlife experts said.

Raccoons have contracted distemper at about three times the normal rate this summer, experts said.

In July and August, DeKalb County Animal Control wardens captured 20 raccoons afflicted with the disease, which is a viral illness, said Greg Maurice, director of health protection with the DeKalb County Health Department.

“This year we’re running about three times the number of raccoons we would normally have euthanized at this point for distemper,” Maurice said.

There are both canine and feline forms of distemper, and raccoons can contract both strains. Regardless of the strain, the symptoms of the disease are generally the same: the usually nocturnal animals will be active during the daytime. They lose their fear of people and may stagger, seem disoriented and suffer from convulsions, tremors or fits, according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

Local animal experts said distemper cases tend to come in waves, with particularly severe years coming when the population in an area reaches a critical mass. Raccoons have few natural predators, so distemper is one natural way the raccoon population stays in balance, said Peggy Doty, environmental and energy stewardship educator at the University of Illinois Extension.

“When you get more (distemper cases) it’s because they’re closer together, they’re getting more contact,” Doty said. “When the population gets too dense, they come into contact with each other more, and the virus spreads more.”

Berres has seen a recent increase in calls about raccoons in the area suffering from distemper, an untreatable disease that has symptoms similar to rabies. wild animal rescue, they also have seen a higher-than-usual number of raccoons with the disease. In August, about eight to 10 animals brought to the wildlife rescue outside Sycamore have been euthanized because they had distemper, said Carly Stadie, co-director of animal care at Oaken Acres.

“This time of year is so popular

for distemper because it’s a lot of the juveniles who are getting it,” Stadie said. “There’s a six- to 16-week period for a raccoon where they’re going into the wild exploring and the immunity from their mother’s milk is wearing off. They’re really susceptible to getting sick.”

There’s no cure for the degenerative disease, so the sick animals have

to be euthanized, experts said.

“There’s the potential they’re going to live a little longer with us than they would out in the wild, but it really is an unpleasant disease,” Stadie said. “The most humane option for us is just to euthanize them.”

Distemper poses no threat to humans, but it spreads freely among raccoons, gray foxes, coyotes and skunks. Pet cats and dogs also can be susceptible to the feline and canine forms of the disease if they are not vaccinated.

Almost all of the distemper cases seen this summer have been in DeKalb, Maurice said, and in addition to the live animals they have caught, there have been other calls where the animals have died before an animal control warden arrived.

Maurice said anyone who encounters a raccoon or other wild animal that seems to be sick should keep their distance and alert their local police through a nonemergency number, or call DeKalb County Animal Control at 815-748-2427.

Stadie said people comfortable with trapping the animals themselves can bring them to Oaken Acres, or should just notify animal control.

It is important, however, that people keep themselves, their children and their pets away from a raccoon behaving strangely, Doty said.

“Humans are in no danger of distemper,” Doty said, “but humans are in danger of getting bit by thinking they can pet a raccoon.”

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – The city once again has an operating book store with independent retailer Book World’s grand opening.

The store will open at 10 a.m. today in the Junction Shopping Center, 858 W. Lincoln Highway, according to a Facebook post and sign on the door.

It occupies a 7,000-square-foot space between Laundry Lounge and Fushi Yami Restaurant.

Appleton, Wisconsin-based Book World has 45 stores in Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota. The family-owned company offers hardcover and paperback books.

Book World fielded several requests from people in the area for locating one of its stores in DeKalb and visited the area several times to see

whether the Junction location would work, Gregg Belonger, vice president of store operations for Book World Inc., told the Daily Chronicle in May. The Junction Shopping Center is a multi-tenant strip center with 17 storefronts. For more than 20 years, it was home to the Junction Book Store, which opened in 1969, the year the shopping center was built.

The Junction Book Store closed in 2002, not long after Borders Books & Music opened in November 2001 and Barnes & Noble announced plans of its own for a bookstore across the street. After the Junction Book Store, the space was occupied by Dollar General.

Since Barnes & Noble closed its 21,000-square-foot space at 2439 Sycamore Road at the end of 2014, DeKalb had been without a general-interest bookstore.

DeKALB – Visitor spending in DeKalb County hit an all-time high of $91.3 million last year, bringing in $7.47 million in state and local tax revenue.

It was the seventh consecutive year that visitor spending has increased, said Debbie Armstrong, executive director of DeKalb County Convention & Visitors Bureau.

“Tourism continues to make a significant impact on our economic wealth in DeKalb County,” she said in a statement. “$91.3 million in visitor spending shows just how im-

portant investing in tourism marketing is to our local economy.”

Visitor spending was up 3.3 percent from 2014, when the total was $88.39 million.

By comparison, visitor spending in DeKalb County in 2013 totaled $81.58 million. In 2011, it was $78.62 million.

The figures, provided by the U.S. Travel Association, are preliminary. Final visitor statistics will be available later this year, according to a news release.

Statewide, the Illinois Department of Commerce’s Office of Tourism said travelers spent $37 billion, a 2.6 percent increase from 2014.

Christine Auler, 80, of Peru, IL, died peacefully at 9:57 a.m. Monday, Aug. 29, 2016.

Prayers for Chris will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 2, 2016, at the Barto Funeral Home, Spring Valley, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 2, 2016, at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church (Mautino Drive location) in Spring Valley. The Rev. Robert Spilman will officiate. Burial will follow at Peru City Cemetery. Visitation for Chris will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, at the funeral home, as well as a half hour before prayers, Friday at the funeral home.

Chris was born June 21, 1936, in Spring Valley, to James P. and Irene Travers Barto.

She married Al Auler on July 12, 1969, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Spring Valley. He died Nov. 4, 1990.

Chris was a graduate of Hall High School, Class of 1954. She had been a volunteer for the I-READ literacy program at Illinois Valley Community College. She was a former coach for Peru girls softball and CCD teacher at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She also provided housing for Central States Tournament baseball players for many years.

Chris loved attending her grandsons sporting events and programs.

Survivors include two daughters, Susan (Jon) Arbisi of LaSalle and Mary Beth (Jeff) Hess of Dekalb; a brother, James R. Barto of Spring Valley; two sisters, Norma Maurer of Torrance, California and Dorothy Maurer of Roseville, California; and five grandsons, Evan and Drew Arbisi, and Kyle, Hayden and Seth Hess.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the LaSalle-Peru High School Foundation for Educational Enrichment or to Horizon House.

Survivors include her husband, Onnie Gulley; children, Jean Ann Farris (Judy). Linda Reshel, John Farris (Donna), and Sheila Cantrell (Tom); stepchildren, Dale Bochlund, Kevin Gulley, Debbie Gulley, Jimmy Gulley, and Vicky Hagerman; one brother, Calvin Brown (Barbara); her sisters, Colleen Johnson and Shirley (Ken) Montavon; and by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Jody, Sue, Mary and Donie; and her ex-husband, Buster Farris.

A special thanks to Sheena Cantrell, who acted in her Grandma’s best interest as her medical powers of attorney functionary. A special thank you to Linda Fisher for her acts of kindness.

Her funeral service will be from 11:45 a.m. to 12:05 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at First Baptist Church, 530 W. State St. in Sycamore, IL, with the Rev. Calvin Brown delivering the service.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11:45 a.m. Saturday at the church.

SYCAMORE – A Sandwich man has been sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to a reduced charge for having multiple convictions for driving under the influence.

Steven K. Smethurst, 59, of the 1700 block of Doris Road, Sandwich, pleaded guilty earlier this month to aggravated driving under Steven K. the influence, a Class 2 Smethurst felony. He had initially been charged with a Class 1 felony because he had five prior DUI convictions, according to court records and a news release from the Somonauk Police Department. A Class 1 felony is typically punishable by four to 15 years in prison.

In exchange for a guilty plea to the reduced charge, prosecutors dropped a driving with a revoked license charge, court records show.

Smethurst is serving his sentence at Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill near Joliet. His projected parole date is Aug. 17, 2018, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Somonauk police arrested Smethurst after a motorcycle crash in June 2015 on East LaSalle Street just west of Holiday Drive at 1:30 a.m.

Smethurst told police he had swerved to avoid hitting a deer.

He also told police that he had six beers to drink while watching the Blackhawks game.

Somonauk police had previously seized a 2003 Dodge Dakota pickup truck from Smethurst when he was arrested for driving under the influence in 2005.

SPRINGFIELD – Invasive weeds have long threatened to erode dunes on a portion of the Chicago lakefront, but the area recently had to contend with a virtual invasion: “Pokemon Go” characters.

The game sends players into the real world in search of digital monsters that appear on smartphone screens to be caught, and hundreds of people have been flocking to the Loyola Dunes restoration area to find the hard-to-get “Lapras.” But in their quest to find the rare creature, players have been walking over native grassland critical to protecting the dunes from erosion.

The heavy foot-traffic became so worrisome to environmentalists that proposed legislation seeks to get certain sites removed from the game so players are only disturbing the virtual Pokemon characters and not ecologically sensitive areas in their quest to catch them.

“It should not be trampled and stampeded in that way,” said state Rep. Kelly Cassidy, a Chicago Democrat who is sponsoring the bill.

Cassidy’s bill would require app developers to remove locations in augmented reality games within two days of receiving a request to do so or face a daily fine of $100.

“We just want to make sure that the imaginary animals can co-exist with the real wildlife in our parks and natural areas,” said Jack Darin, director of the Sierra Club’s Illinois chapter.

The proposal is one of the first of its kind in the country, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

In New York, lawmakers are considering legislation to restrict sex offenders’ use of augmented reality games.

Chicago’s case is not the first time ingame locations, known as “Pokestops,” have disrupted the real world.

Pokestops at the atomic bomb memorial park in Hiroshima, Japan, and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington are among the sites that

have been removed from the game after complaints.

Niantec, the San Francisco-based developer behind the game, has removed the Pokestop that was frustrating conservationists in Chicago, but Cassidy said it took several requests and the introduction of her bill last week.

“We regret the delay in removing the site which was due to the unusually high usage of the game and subsequent requests for both removal and addition of game locations,” Niantic founder and CEO John Hanke said in a statement. “We want to emphasize that we are supporters of public space and believe that our cities and communities are healthier when citizens make use of public space, bringing us into contact with the outdoors and with one another.

Yes, even when that use is motivated by capturing Pokemon.”

The earliest the bill can be heard is November, when state lawmakers return to the Capitol for a brief fall session. One small-government group has already expressed opposition, saying

it’s an instance of government interfering with innovation.

“It’s trying to tell people to who develop a brand-new product how they have to design it,” said Jacob Huebert, senior attorney with the Chicago-based Liberty Justice Center.

Cassidy said she has nothing against the game, which she also plays, and she applauded the fact that it’s getting people to explore the city and the dunes.

She even named her bill after “Pidgey,” one of the more common birdlike characters from the game.

But environmentalists say the area, which volunteers have spent years trying to restore by pulling weeds and planting indigenous plants, was not meant to handle the amount of traffic it has received.

“There’ll be 100 or 200 people there, just like rushing on to the site to get a rare Pokemon, and a lot of them at one time,” said Jen Walling, executive director of the Illinois Environmental Council. “The site can have visitors, but that many is just too much.”

With beauty and grace she humbly opened her heart and home to many in need.

Ex-Gov. Quinn unveils redistricting reform plan

CHICAGO – Former Gov. Pat Quinn is pitching a redistricting plan he says will meet constitutional muster because it’s simpler than previous plans.

The Democrat said an 11-member commission appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court should draw political boundaries. He said there should be no more than six members from a political party and at least seven must sign off.

He presented the plan Tuesday, days after the high court rejected a petition-driven ballot measure that would’ve also given allowed a commission to draw legislative boundaries instead of elected officials. The Independent Maps’ coalition proposed a redistricting system including the auditor general.

A divided court said their plan went beyond the scope of what’s constitutionally allowed. However, justices didn’t rule out redistricting for future ballots.

Quinn said he wants to work with Independent Maps for 2018.

USDA spokesman Matthew Herrick said the department had received “several anonymous messages” late Monday that raised concerns about the safety of USDA personnel and facilities.

He said offices in six locations in the five states were closed Tuesday morning until further notice.

Herrick said the threat was one email message sent to multiple employees at all of the locations.

Hopes for criminal justice overhaul fade

WASHINGTON – Hopes for overhauling the nation’s criminal justice system have faded in Congress this year, undercut by a rash of summer shootings involving police and the pressure of election-year politics.

Republicans, including Majority Whip John Cornyn of Texas and Utah Sen. Mike Lee, had joined forces with Democrats in hopes of revising the 1980s and ’90s-era federal “tough on crime” laws by reducing some mandatory sentences for low-level drug offenders and giving judges greater discretion in sentencing. The goal is to reduce overcrowding in the nation’s prisons and save taxpayer dollars.

In 1980, the federal prison population was less than 25,000. Today, it is more than 200,000.

The bipartisan group encountered fierce opposition from some Republicans who argue reform could increase crime and pose a greater danger to law enforcement. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump hasn’t commented on the pending legislation but has dubbed himself the “law-and-order candidate” for what he calls a country in crisis, with terrorism in cities and attacks on police.

With Republicans deeply divided, one man could break the legislative deadlock: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who has not indicated whether he supports the effort. If inaction is telling, McConnell so far has declined to put the legislation to vote, suggesting he doesn’t want a messy intraparty fight before the November election.

An unusual coalition – President Barack Obama, the American Civil Liberties Union and the conservative Koch Industries – says the system is broken and supports changes. Obama has made it a priority in his last year.

But Ryan and Obama have a tough job in winning over McConnell, who must deal with opponents such as Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and a handful of other Senate Republicans.

Supporters are also battling the calendar; Congress is only in session a few weeks before Obama leaves office. Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton supports the effort, but if she wins, it’s unclear whether there would be momentum for the overhaul in her busy first year in office.

Cotton calls the Senate bill “a dangerous experiment in criminal leniency” that would let violent criminals out of prison.

Supporters say the legislation would do the opposite, making communities safer by focusing on rehabilitation and preserving police resources. Mark Holden of Koch Industries, which has backed the Senate and House bills, points to states that have successfully put similar reforms in place.

Proponents argue that there’s no direct connection between the overhaul and this summer’s shootings of black men in Minneapolis and Baton Rouge – or the shooting of police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge – since the measures would primarily deal with incarceration of low-level drug offenders and rehabilitation programs. Opponents counter that reducing mandatory minimum sentences could further endanger law enforcement.

“If you talk to actual officers on the street, almost all of them will tell you their job has gotten more dangerous,” said the Hudson Institute’s John Walters, who was drug czar under President George W. Bush. “The current debate about this isn’t going to give them a voice.”

Don’t give up on redistricting

One vote is all that stood in the way of the Independent Map Amendment being approved by the Illinois Supreme Court for placement on the Nov. 8 ballot.

On a party-line ruling Thursday, the four Democratic Supreme Court justices struck down the proposed redistricting reform amendment, while the three Republican Supreme Court justices favored allowing it to go before the voters.

The Supreme Court, by its 4-3 vote, sided with a Cook County judge who had ruled the proposed constitutional amendment unconstitutional.

Thus, the second attempt in two years to reform a secretive redistricting process, controlled by politicians with little public involvement, which is unfair to minorities, skews election results, stifles competition, and thwarts the will of the people, has failed.

We disagreed with Cook County Judge Diane Larsen’s ruling in July.

We disagree with the Illinois Supreme Court’s ruling from last week.

Justice Thomas Kilbride, writing an opinion for the majority, centered the court’s argument on an extremely narrow interpretation of the citizen initiative portion of the Illinois Constitution.

More than 563,000 Illinoisans who signed petitions supporting the Independent Map Amendment have every right to suspect that the institutions of government, run by self-serving politicians, or those beholden to them, want to stifle the public’s input.

Indeed, the proposed 11-member citizen redistricting commission would have been required to be open and transparent, while removing politics and incumbency from consideration when new legislative districts are drawn every 10 years.

The current redistricting process, for three of the past four decades, was controlled by House Speaker Michael Madigan, D-Chicago, who used it to promote his personal political agenda (Democratic supermajorities in the House and Senate), not the interests of the public.

The latest result of Madigan’s maps will be seen by voters in the Nov. 8 election, where in election after legislative election across the state, there are no competitive races.

Dennis FitzSimons, chairman of Independent Maps, said the court’s ruling was “extremely disappointing” and that drafters of the Illinois Constitution “would not recognize the interpretation” made by the Supreme Court.

So what’s next?

FitzSimons said a rehearing of the case might be sought.

If not, redistricting reform is officially dead for 2016.

The good news is that this effort very nearly made it across the finish line.

With elections in 2018 and 2020 ahead before the next redistricting cycle, a revised redistricting reform amendment might yet be possible.

Justice Kilbride wrote, “Our decision is not intended to reflect in any way on the viability of other possible redistricting reform initiatives.”

We hope the Independent Maps group, which very nearly succeeded in 2016, will remain together, retool its proposed amendment, and push ahead for needed redistricting reforms in

But make no mistake. “Hillbilly Elegy,” the new best-seller by J.D. Vance, is, in a very real sense, about Donald Trump. More to the point, it’s about the people who have made his unlikely run for the presidency possible.

It is also, not coincidentally, a book about being invisible. Not H.G. Wells invisible, with objects seeming to float in mid-air. Rather, Ralph Ellison invisible, when you are right there in three dimensions, but somehow, unseen.

First and foremost, though, Vance’s book is a memoir about growing up hardscrabble and white in clannish, insular communities in Kentucky and Ohio. It was a tough, unstable life.

Vance was in and out of his mother’s house – she was a drug user with a procession of boyfriends and husbands – and was raised mostly by his grandparents – “Papaw” and “Mamaw.”

Mamaw was no June Cleaver. A gun-toting “lunatic” with a menthol cigarette forever dangling from her lips, she was rumored to have once

VIEWS Leonard Pitts almost killed a man who stole from her family. Her favorite descriptive term was the verb form of the F-word. But her love for her grandson was iron.

That grandson did a hitch in the Marines, went to college, went to law school at Yale. But he never lost a certain tough-minded pride of people and place.

“I may be white,” writes Vance, now a Silicon Valley investment executive, “but I do not identify with the WASPs of the Northeast.

Instead, I identify with the millions of working-class white Americans of Scots-Irish descent who have no college degree.

“To these folks, poverty is the family tradition – their ancestors were day laborers in the Southern slave economy, sharecroppers after that, coal miners after that, and machinists and mill workers during more recent times. Americans call

them hillbillies, rednecks, or white trash. I call them neighbors, friends and family.”

In other words, Vance’s people are Trump’s base. And the book is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand Trump’s appeal. “Hillbilly Elegy” is a compelling and compassionate portrait of a people politicians seldom address and media seldom reflect.

They love Trump because he sees them.

Yes, he’s a racist clown. Yes, he appeals to their lowest selves, to their hatreds and fears. But he sees them and speaks to them, something neither Democrats nor Republicans do.

When you feel yourself forgotten, when work and hope have fled, when you live by a tough-minded pride of people and place, yet also by a whisper of embarrassment that your people and place are so often sick, unschooled and hungry, the simple fact of being seen and spoken to is powerful.

The one great flaw in Vance’s book is a disingenuous near-silence on his kinsmen’s attitudes about race.

And a passage wherein he claims their antipathy toward Barack Obama has “nothing to do with skin color” but rather, with the fact that he is “brilliant, wealthy, and speaks like a constitutional law professor” is flat-out intellectually dishonest.

Obama is hardly the first politician to be smart, rich and well-spoken.

He is, however, the first to be hounded into producing his long form birth certificate.

Still, that flaw does not outweigh Vance’s triumph, which is to give substance and dimension to those America has made invisible.

Democrats, Republicans and media struggling to comprehend the forces that have upended politics should be asking themselves a question.

Donald Trump shattered the paradigm because he sees J.D. Vance’s people.

Why is he the only one who does?

Voters deserve more insight into candidates’ health

Like all of us, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are going to die.

Will it be in the next four years?

Probably – ideally – not. But for voters, that’s a reasonable question, especially given that Clinton is 68 and Trump, 70. Unfortunately, the candidates have refused to divulge the kind of information that would enable anyone to arrive at an informed opinion about their health.

Citizens weigh many factors when selecting a president, and health is a legitimate one.

If a candidate is pushing past the traditional retirement age, and especially if voters have concerns about his or her vice-presidential pick, health may weigh heavily. That was the case for some Americans in 2008, when Sen. John McCain – who

was 72 on Election Day – chose Sarah Palin as a running mate.

McCain, however, allowed reporters to see eight years and more than 1,000 pages of his medical records.

The public learned details about his bouts with skin cancer, kidney stones, an enlarged prostate and other conditions. That level of transparency was unusual, but given Clinton and Trump’s age, it should be their model.

Instead, both have released only perfunctory letters from their personal doctors, lacking in detail. Clinton’s doctor provided at least some information on her medical history and current vital signs, similar to what Barack Obama released in 2008.

But Obama was then only 46. And just four years ago, Clinton suffered

“a terrible concussion that required six months of very serious work to get over,” her husband said.

Trump’s doctor issued an even shorter letter calling Trump’s blood pressure and unspecified lab results “exceedingly excellent.” He ended the letter by declaring, “If elected, Mr. Trump, I can state unequivocally, will be the healthiest person ever elected to the presidency” – giving new meaning to the term “spin doctor.” Trump has tweeted that he has “no problem” releasing detailed medical records, but so far has not done so.

Voters have learned to take doctors’ notes with a dose of skepticism, ever since a doctor who had treated Paul Tsongas, a 1992 contender for the Democratic presidential nomina-

tion, withheld information about his history with cancer.

By the time Bill Clinton took the oath of office the following year, Tsongas was back to battling cancer.

He died days before Clinton’s first term expired.

That prompted calls for an independent committee of medical experts to review candidates’ medical records and release summary reports.

Nothing came of it – although it remains a good idea, if still unlikely to happen.

Mandating such disclosure would be a step too far; it might not even be constitutional. But voters should demand that Clinton and Trump be more forthcoming.

Senior finally takes over as starting middle linebacker

After patiently waiting as a reserve for three seasons, the Northern Illinois senior is taking over as the starting middle linebacker as the Huskies open the season at 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Wyoming.

“It feels great, man. A long time coming,” said Payton, a 6-foot, 228-pounder from Proviso West High School in Bellwood. “It’s something I’ve been prepared for and something that I’ve been mentally preparing myself for throughout the years.”

For the past three seasons, Payton found himself behind Boomer Mays, a three-year starter who capped his decorated career by being named first-

team all-Mid-American Conference.

He also was named the team MVP. Payton, meanwhile, has started in three contests during his time at NIU – including two at outside linebacker his freshman year and against Bowling Green in the MAC Championship in 2014.

However, now he is the man in the middle for the Huskies defense.

“It was a hard process, but I think it taught me a lot of things about my character and how to deal with myself and things that will prepare me for life,” Payton said about being a reserve for most of his career. “The biggest thing I learned was patience, endurance, perseverance. There’s days it would hurt, especially being a talented player watching a talented player. ... It’s hard. One of the things you really grow out of is having that bias perspective. Your perspective is always somewhat blurred when you’re looking at yourself. It’s hard to step away and be like, ‘OK, he’s probably better than me.’ ” In 14 games last year, Payton finished with 42 tackles – 4.5 for a loss – and a sack. He had a season-high

seven tackles in the blowout win over Eastern Michigan and also had five tackles, including two for a loss, and his sack in the season-opening win over UNLV. For NIU defensive coordinator Kevin Kane, Payton’s patience is admirable in a world of college football in which some athletes simply transfer instead of come off the bench.

“He’s definitely paid his dues and he’s earned where he’s at right now,” Kane said. “He’s a rarity in college football as somebody who will actually pay their dues and wait to play. A lot of guys will get frustrated and go someplace else and play. I think he’s shown great resolve and is able to take advantage of his spot right now.

He’s had competition and he’s not going to let anybody take this from him.”

Kane said Payton brings athleticism and agility in the middle – along with an ability to deliver punishing tackles to opponents. With that ability, Kane said, it gives the opponents something to think about crossing the field against the Huskies defense.

Payton also was a bruising running back in his days in high school, rushing for 1,002 yards and 25 touchdowns as a senior, along with his 150 tackles.

When it comes to his physical play, he gave an apt comparison.

“Regardless of the position, I was always going to be the hammer,” he said. “I was never going to be the nail.”

Now the Hammer has become the Starter. Payton said because he has started games for the Huskies in the the past, the excitement he feels for Saturday is more about finally playing a game than finally getting to start.

However, if he has his way, Payton will announce his presence early against the Cowboys.

“I love being that first big hit – the first thing to make the crowd go wild,” Payton said. “As you mature, I don’t think it means as much. You appreciate just playing and being out there more. The starting position is great, but even my role as a second string was always fun because I made big plays. Just playing your role is fun, but starting, you just feel like you’re that guy. I’m that guy.”

DeKalb’s Ryzhov finishes in 4th

sports@daily-chronicle.com DEKALB – The Sycamore boys cross country team took second place at its own invitational Tuesday at Afton Forest Preserve in a race that saw a few familiar faces in the top 10.

Kaneland junior Matt Richtman finished second, posting a time of 16 minutes, 2.8 seconds. Richtman finished 18.6 seconds behind Rock Falls’ Brayden Hamblen.

“I felt good through the first couple miles,” Richtman said. “We had a nice pack going for the first few miles before things broke up. There’s a couple hills on the first mile that make this course difficult. We did a good job of walking the trail before we ran and were well prepared.”

Kaneland finished sixth as a team.

Coach Chad Cleary said he knows what his runners have to do to improve.

“We have to finish stronger,” Cleary said. “Our goal today was to get out a little bit quicker to set a tone for the season. If we paid a price at the end of the race because we started out faster, we will improve as the season goes on.”

DeKalb senior captain Mitchell Bishop was sixth with a time of 16:38.3, leading the Barbs to a seventh-place team finish. Senior Thomas Wuchte finished 13th with a time of 16:53.5.

Barbs coach Mike Wolf is optimistic for his boys team.

“We tried to run smart,” Wolf said.

“We talked about being in the top 30 at the first mile and moving up from there. Our goal was to get two in the top 10, and we just missed. Looking at last year, Thomas (Wuchte) was 24th and Mitchell (Bishop) was 28th in this race. We’ve definitely improved.”

Sycamore had a great showing, amassing 97 team points. Dixon was a little bit better, though, beating them by a point. Spartans junior Stephen Poorten finished ninth. It was a neckand-neck finish between him and Dixon senior Sean Masterson. Masterson finished with a time of 16:42.1, edging out Poorten by .9 seconds. Poorten finished with a time of 16:43.

“I ran 15 seconds faster here about a month ago,” Poorten said. “After a solid month of training, it is a bit of a letdown. An even bigger letdown for us was losing by a point and for me, losing by a second to a kid from the team that beat us. It was a very rough first race.”

kind of teammate that [Poorten] is,” Spartans coach Mike Lambdin said of Poorten’s postrace comments. “The fact is that this isn’t on him. The one point could have come from anyone else in our lineup. I thought we ran a great meet today. Not only were we second at the varsity level as a team, but we won the frosh/soph race, too. I think we’re really solid up and down our program.”

On the girls side of the meet, DeKalb sophomore Christina Ryzhov came in fourth, running a 20:38.2. She was about 44 seconds behind the winner, Jenna Lutzow, a senior from Belvidere North.

Grasu, Shaw go on IR; roster down to 75

kfishbain@profootballweekly LAKE FOREST – The Bears trimmed their roster to 75 players Tuesday, starting by placing two players on injured reserve – center Hroniss Grasu and quarterback Connor Shaw.

Grasu tore the ACL in his right knee at practice Aug. 6. Shaw broke his left leg in Saturday’s preseason game against the Chiefs.

Rookie outside linebacker Roy Robertson-Harris was placed on the reserve/non-football illness list. He missed much of camp with an illness and was out of practice Tuesday with an illness, as well. The former UTEP edge rusher had a tackle for loss and QB hit Saturday.

Former Notre Dame linebacker Jarrett Grace was waived, and veteran linebacker Lamin Barrow was waived/ injured. Barrow, a special-teamer who injured his foot last week, would revert to injured reserve if he clears waivers.

The Bears have until Saturday afternoon to cut the roster to 53 players.

Nickel swap: To add depth to the corner position, the Bears claimed former Browns cornerback K’Waun Williams off waivers and waived undrafted rookie Kevin Peterson.

Williams was Cleveland’s slot corner last season, making 39 tackles and two passes defensed in 13 games (six starts).

He started four games in 2014.

Injury report: MLB Danny Trevathan (hamstring) and DB Harold Jones-Quar-

tey (illness) missed practice, along with CB Kyle Fuller (knee), DB Tracy Porter (concussion), DB Deon Bush (head, neck), DB Bryce Callahan (hamstring) and OL Kyle Long (shoulder). OL Ted Larsen and DL Akiem Hicks returned to practice after missing Monday’s session.

Coach John Fox said Long could be practicing next week.

Royal, Miller ready to provide boost to offense: The offense has been ineffective

in two out of three preseason games, but that was without receiver Eddie Royal and tight end Zach Miller. The two key pass catchers for the Bears’ offense spoke to the media Tuesday about the offense after being cleared from the concussion protocol.

“I think it takes a lot of hard work to get to where we want to be,” Royal said.

“We’re always a work in progress, always trying to get better. The preseason was great to let us know that we’ve got some work to do. We know that we’ve got a great team. We’ve got guys that can make a lot of plays on the offensive side of the ball, and we know that. We’ve just got to go do it.”

Miller said fans shouldn’t panic over the offense’s issues this month.

“We were disappointed, too. Stick with us. That’s what I would say,” he said. “Nobody is in panic mode, yet.”

Solo decides to quit Seattle Reign: Goalkeeper Hope Solo has decided to end her season with the Seattle Reign.

As if getting shut out by IC Catholic in the season opener wasn’t bad enough, the defending Class 3A state champion was dealt some major blows on the injury front.

None was bigger than the thumb injury suffered by receiver Chris Bell.

The Western Michigan commit was set to undergo an MRI Monday with a timetable for his return not yet set.

Bell compiled 11 touchdowns and 684 yards last fall and was expected to be a key piece in McNamara’s title defense.

The Fightin’ Irish, who were ranked No. 1 in the Class 3A preseason poll and fell to No. 7 this week, also had quarterback Giavion Mason and running back Ariez Andrew exit during the 34-0 loss at IC Catholic. Bishop McNamara will host 8A stalwart Bolingbrook on Friday.

sports@daily-chronicle.com The Genoa-Kingston volleyball team stormed back against former conference rival Burlington Central for a 16-25, 26-24, 2516 win Tuesday night in Genoa.

The Cogs trailed, 20-16, with no timeouts in the second game before pulling off the comeback and rolling in Game 3.

“It was a nice win, a pretty cool win,” Cogs coach Keith Foster said. “We had lost, 16-25, and were looking uphill at 16-20, but the girls persevered, and that really carried over.”

Jeannette Brann had 11 kills and Cally McPherson added 22 assists as the Cogs (1-2) picked up their first win of the year. Alissa Lacko had 14 digs, and Madison Wagner added 12 in the win over the Rockets, who left the Big Northern Conference for the newly formed Kishwaukee River Conference.

“It would have been nice if it were a conference win, but it was still an awesome win,” Foster said. “It was nice to see them so excited. It was a thriller, for sure.”

DeKalb did not post a team score as it finished the race as an incomplete team. Sophomore Katherine Olsen went down with about 400 meters left in the race. Coach Mike Wolf, who also coaches the Barbs boys team, said that Olsen should be fine.

Hinckley-Big Rock only has one runner in its program, senior Audrey Harrod. She was able to crack the top 15, coming in 12th. Harrod finished with a time of 21.20.5. She is coached by her mother, Kristy Harrod.

“Honestly, it’s a work in progress,” Kristy Harrod said.

“We’ve worked it out over the years and it’s been working. I understand what she needs, and she understands what I need.”

Huntley still stout on ‘D’

Huntley sported the most dominant defensive unit in the Fox Valley Conference last season, including several players who went on at NCAA scholarship schools. Although there are mostly new starters, the Red Raiders proved formidable in the opener as they shut out Jacobs, 35-0.

Defensive ends Olalere Oladipo had a pair of sacks early, celebrating his commitment to Illinois the day before.

And the other end, Caleb Jones also sacked Golden Eagles quarterback Chris Katrenick once.

The Raiders opened the season at No. 1 in Class 8A and face a tough Prairie Ridge team in a key FVC game this week.

No. 8 Johnsburg defeated No. 10 Plano, 32-20, in its opener Friday, a meeting between a pair of ranked teams in Class 4A. Johnsburg moved up two spots to No. 6 in this week’s 4A poll, while Plano is unranked.

Johnsburg has six third-year varsity starters and looks like the favorite in the new Kishwaukee River Conference. Running back Alex Peete had 22 carries for 128 yards and a pair of touchdown runs. Receiver Nico LoDolce caught seven passes for 112 yards.

Final 11.3 seconds last 40 minutes in Seneca

Seneca rallied from a 14-0 deficit to stun visiting Dwight in Week 1, but they had to wait awhile to close out the comeback.

A 40-minute lightning delay came with 11.3 seconds remaining, the Irish leading 20-14 and the Trojans facing fourth-and-goal from the Seneca 4-yard line. After all that waiting, Seneca’s defense stuffed Dwight on the first play back to seal the upset.

Rockford Lutheran might not have had the weapons it had last year, but the Crusaders still were riding a 24-game home winning streak into its season opener Friday against Genoa-Kingston.

But the Cogs, under second-year coach Bill McCarty, came away with a statement win, 32-30.

The Crusaders missed a field goal in the closing seconds that would have given them the win, but the Cogs were in position to win because of a 78-yard touchdown pass from second-year starting quarterback Zach Butler to senior Zach Miller with two minutes left.

Butler was 11 for 18 with 209 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions – plus he returned a kick 92 yards for a touchdown and had 77 rushing yards and two scores on the ground.

He even played at safety for G-K in the win.

The Cogs’ next two games are against teams that finished last year with losing records – North Boone, which was 4-5 last year and is 0-1 this year, and Rock Falls, which was 0-9 last year but beat Rockford Christian in its opener.

Prairie Ridge turned in a solid allaround performance in its 26-14 victory at Cary-Grove, a matchup of teams tied at the No. 3 spot in The Associated Press’ preseason Class 6A poll.

The Wolves (No. 2 this week) were good on defense, holding C-G fullback Tyler Pennington to 48 yards, and controlled field position with punter Derek Greiner, who put two second-quarter punts on C-G’s 3. The Wolves scored after both of those kicks.

Wolves quarterback Samson Evans was limited to 62 yards rushing, but hit tight end Austen Ferbet for a pair of touchdowns, and also hit Ferbet with a hook-and-lateral play for another touchdown.

So many ways to make a great gazpacho

MADRID – In Spain, there are as many gazpachos as there are Spaniards. Every family here has its own recipe with its own little changes.

I much prefer gazpacho made in a food mill, as that allows for some texture, and that is the way it was made when I was young. Nowadays it is done in a blender, but it does not turn out exactly the same. Machine-blended gazpacho with bread and olive oil is more like a salmorejo, but without that soup’s creamy smoothness.

The main difference between gazpacho and some of its variations lies in texture and emulsion. In a classic Spanish gazpacho, olive oil is simply stirred in at the end; in salmorejo, porra and other soups, the olive oil is emulsified, resulting in a brighter orange color and a smooth, creamy texture.

Gazpacho is a sophisticated dish that takes to a multitude of variations.

But with all its versatility, it still requires a certain balance of components. In particular, too much sherry vinegar or garlic can ruin it.

In Spain, gazpacho can be a drink, an appetizer, a tapa, a dip, a sauce or seasoning, a starter, a main dish, even a dessert. It is eaten at any time of the day and at any time during a meal.

Nothing is more delicious than a piece of toast smeared with a little gazpacho or salmorejo for breakfast.

Babies in Spain do not eat gazpacho because of the soup’s vinegar content and use of raw tomatoes, which are not recommended for infants. But by age 4 or 5, children begin to get used to gazpacho. How much they like it depends on the amount of garlic and vinegar you put into it. Teenagers, on the other hand, generally love gazpacho and never seem to tire of it.

For one of my daughters, gazpacho was a late taste acquisition. She never wanted to eat anything red because she thought it looked too much like blood. I used to make green or white gazpacho for her. Then again, her brother never ate anything green: He thought it was like grass and did not want to be fed like a cow. Children.

When we were young, if there was no gazpacho during the week, we felt terribly disappointed. Today, I have to make a bowl of it almost every day.

Even if the refrigerator is empty, as long as there is gazpacho, salmorejo or a similar soup, everyone is happy.

We typically serve it in a consomme cup and saucer and keep it on the side throughout the meal.

To make the soup the traditional way, mash all the ingredients in the bowl. Place a fine-mesh strainer over a separate bowl, then, working in batches, use a flexible spatula to push the mashed mixture, including its liquid, through the strainer. After you have extracted as much moisture as possible from the solids, discard them.

Faster ways: Process the marinated mixture through a hand-cranked food mill (using its Classic Gazpacho smallest-holed screen); or place the marinated 4 servings (makes 5½ cups) vegetables and their liquid in a high-powered blender and puree on the highest speed for Generous 2½ pounds tomatoes and their about 1½ minutes, then strain through a finejuices, hulled and chopped, plus diced mesh strainer.

(Discard the solids afterward tomatoes for garnish for both of those methods, too.)

1 small (3½ ounces) seeded, chopped red Stir the oil into the strained gazpacho. Taste; bell pepper, plus diced red bell pepper for add salt and/or vinegar, as needed. I like to try out new ways of making gazpachos, and I love to experiment with different tomatoes, different extra-virgin olive oils, different vinegars.

We make a lighter or more substantial gazpacho, depending on the mood we are in or how hungry we are. If we are having guests over, it is a must, and everyone loves to share their home recipes or their gazpacho memories.

1½ teaspoons kosher or sea salt, or more as needed 1½ tablespoons Jimenez or other good-quality Spanish sherry vinegar, or more as needed Small pinch ground cumin (optional) 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil, preferably picual olive variety, plus more for optional drizzling (see headnote) Diced white onion, for garnish Diced green bell pepper, for garnish Combine the chopped tomatoes, red bell pepper, cucumber, garlic and bread, if using, in an earthenware or glass bowl. Add the salt, vinegar and cumin, if using, tossing to coat.

Cover and refrigerate for at least a few hours

Nutrition information per serving: 320 calories, 4 g protein, 18 g carbohydrates, 29 g fat, 4 g saturated fat, 0 mg cholesterol, 480 mg sodium, 4 g dietary fiber, 9 g sugar.

••• This is akin to gazpacho but made creamy and thicker with cooked egg yolks and day-old bread. It is inexpensive to make yet refined – and a beautiful color.

6 to 8 servings (makes 4 3/4 cups)

5¼ ounces crustless day-old bread or firm

bread 2 hard-cooked eggs, separated into yolks and whites 2½ pounds hulled, peeled, seeded tomatoes 2 to 3 cloves garlic, chopped 1 teaspoon kosher or sea salt, plus more as needed 2 to 2½ tablespoons Jimenez or good-quality Spanish sherry vinegar 1 cup extra-virgin olive oil, preferably hojiblanca or arbequina olive variety 3½ ounces minced Iberian or cured ham, for garnish Place the bread in a mixing bowl; barely cover it with water and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes, then drain it and squeeze out the excess moisture.

Transfer the bread to the blender along with the cooked egg yolks, tomatoes, garlic (to taste), salt, vinegar (to taste) and oil; puree to an almost mayonnaise-like consistency. Divide among individual small bowls or glasses.

Mince the remaining egg whites, then top each portion with a bit of them, and the ham.

Season lightly with salt, as you like.

NOTE: To peel the tomatoes, score a shallow X in the bottoms. Submerge them in a bowl of just-boiled water for 20 to 30 seconds, then immediately transfer to an ice-water bath. The skins will slip off easily. Seed the tomatoes by cutting them into wedges, then removing the pockets of gel from each one.

Variation: Add 1 cooked beet (3 ounces; about the size of an apricot) to the blender and an extra small pinch of salt.

DAILY CHRONICLE The Kishwaukee College Continuing Education department is once again offering the short-term Phlebotomy Technician training program.

Class meets at Kishwaukee College from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 12 to Dec. 21.

The course will be taught by Corie Thibeault.

The cost of the program is $2,045. There is a registration deadline of Sept. 4.

Phlebotomist technicians are health care professionals who obtain and prepare specimens for

laboratory processing. Traditionally, phlebotomist technicians are associated with drawing and preparing blood in hospitals, clinics or physician’s offices.

However, phlebotomists can be employed in a wide variety of fields that work with any bodily fluids that can be laboratory tested.

Thibeault will be teaching the course for the fourth consecutive semester at Kishwaukee College this fall. She has been a phlebotomist for more than 10 years and still works in the field in addition to teaching. She is an independent contractor in phlebotomy, doing exams for insurance companies.

Class teaches adults how to learn online DAILY CHRONICLE Northern Illinois University’s new Take 5 program is designed to make adult learners comfortable in today’s online learning environment.

Designed and taught by a leader in the field of online education, this one-of-a-kind program will teach students how to navigate discussion boards and virtual classrooms. It will prepare them to engage in the sort of online learning that can make learning new skills – or earning a degree – more convenient than ever.

Like many online classes at NIU, the program will be delivered in a “blended” manner, with three in-person sessions at NIU Naperville, and two online ses-

sions. Classes will meet at 6 p.m.

Tuesdays, for five weeks starting Sept. 27. Through Labor Day the cost of the program will be $29, but will increase to $49 after that date.

As a bonus, while learning to navigate the virtual classroom, students enrolled in the class will get a bit of career counseling. To familiarize students with the online learning environment, exercises will include completing an online interest inventory, and getting feedback on their answers.

Another session will be dedicated to hosting a panel of career experts who will discuss pathways to career development.

Preschool begins 47th year DAILY CHRONICLE Federated Preschool in Sycamore will reopen for the 2016-2017 school year after Labor Day. This will be its 47 year, making the school the oldest continuous-operating preschool in the area.

Summer renovations included the installation of new fire walls and doors to meet current fire and safety codes, and the school is now fully up to code as required by the state fire marshal.

Federated Preschool was started in January 1969 with 13 children attending that spring semester. Located in the Federated

Church at 612 W. State St., it was the first established preschool in Sycamore.

Classes are offered for 3- and 4-year-olds with two-day and three-day sessions, and a five-day option for 4-year-olds.

The preschool has only had two directors in its history, along with a host of dedicated and caring teachers and teacher assistants.

Over the years, students have come from five counties (DeKalb, Ogle, Kane, Boone and McHenry) and more than 13 towns within those counties.

The club distributed Farm and Fleet gift cards to local schools to help defray the sometimes unexpected high cost of the first year of school. Laser allows precise cataract surgery Dear Dr. K: My husband had cataract surgery 10 years ago. Now it’s my turn.

Have there been any advances in the past decade I should know about?

Dear Reader: A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye. It commonly causes poor vision and blindness among older adults. But cataracts can be surgically removed and replaced with artificial lenses.

In fact, cataract surgery has become fairly routine. The vast majority of people who undergo this procedure have excellent outcomes.

I spoke to my colleague Dr. Christian Song. He is a cataract and refractive surgeon at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He noted advances in imaging and measuring, and of the lenses themselves, are making cataract surgery even better.

Typically, cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure. To remove the cataract, the surgeon makes a circular incision around the eye’s lens. Then he or she uses ultrasound to break up and remove the cloudy lens. After that, a new lens is slipped into the eye.

Some surgeons still use a scalpel for the incision. But more and more, surgeons are using an ultra-short-pulse laser.

This allows doctors to make more precise incisions than they can by hand, and softens the cataract for easier removal. The laser also helps to ensure better centering of the implanted lens. Another advance: These days, 3D imaging is used with the laser, allowing still greater precision.

Once the cataract has been removed, a device attached to a microscope measures the total refractive error of the eye. (A refractive error occurs when the shape of the eye prevents light from focusing directly on the retina. As a result, vision appears blurred.) A sophisticated new

This has been especially helpful for people who have had previous laser vision correction, such as LASIK. This technology also has improved the ability to reduce or eliminate the effect of astigmatism. This is an imperfection in the shape of the cornea or lens, causing images to appear distorted or blurry.

Despite these advances, cataract surgery is not without risks. Complications are rare, but they can include severe vision loss, bleeding and infection.

That may sound scary, but the important thing to remember about rare complications is they’re rare. I’m not being flip; I’m having cataract surgery in a few weeks, well aware of the possible complications. But I’ve balanced the benefit from the surgery against the risk – and it’s an easy call for me.

Cataract surgery won’t necessarily give you the vision you had when you were much younger. I’m not expecting that, and neither should you. But it is very likely to improve the vision you and I have now.

Cataract surgery today is so much more successful, and complications are so much rarer, than when I went to medical school. You and I can look forward to a very good outcome.

DEAR ABBY have been dating a married man Jeanne for 30 years. Our Phillips relationship started a few months after he got married. I know it was wrong to begin the relationship, but it started just as a way for me to get sexual experience.

For him, I think he was infatuated with the idea a younger woman found him attractive.

I asked him out knowing he was married, thus safe from expecting a commitment. I don’t think either of us expected our so-called relationship to last this long. I have dated other men (who knew nothing of him) and gave birth to a child (not his), so it’s not like he’s the only man I see. (Of course, he knows I date other men.) Many times I have thought about ending our affair because I feel guilty, and sad for his wife. My problem is our conversations are intoxicating, our kisses, touches and lovemaking are like no other. Must I stop seeing him? Making three no-trump in this deal does require a strange-looking play, but anyone who has met this guideline before should clear the hurdle.

After West leads his fourth-highest heart, and East puts up the jack, what should declarer do?

Declarer starts with seven top tricks: two spades, two hearts (given trick one) and three diamonds. Obviously, he will attack clubs for the extra winners, and if West has that queen, overtricks are going to roll in. But if East has the club queen and West the ace, the contract is in some jeopardy.

Suppose South takes the first trick and runs the club 10. East wins with his queen and returns his remaining heart, which establishes West’s suit while he, West, has the club ace as an entry.

As declarer might lose the lead twice before being able to run for home, the critical play is to duck at trick one -- let East take the trick. East will lead his second heart, but South can win that trick and attack clubs.

Then, when East is in with his queen, he will not have another heart to lead; or, if he does, the suit is splitting 4-3, and declarer will lose only two hearts and two clubs.

With two stoppers in the suit led and two high cards to dislodge, it is almost always right to duck the first trick.
