Visitor misbehavior abounds as U.S. parks agency turns 100

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. – Tourist John Gleason crept through the grass, four small children close behind, inching toward a bull elk with antlers like small trees at the edge of a meadow in Yellowstone National Park.

“They’re going to give me a heart attack,” said Gleason’s mother-in-law, Barbara Henry, as the group came within about a dozen yards of the massive animal.

The elk’s ears then pricked up, and it eyed the children and Washington state man before leaping up a hillside. Other tourists – likewise ignoring rules to keep 25 yards from wildlife – picked up the pursuit, snapping pictures as they pressed forward and forced the animal into headlong retreat.

Record visitor numbers at the nation’s first national park have transformed its annual summer rush into a sometimes dangerous frenzy, with selfie-taking tourists routinely breaking park rules and getting too close to Yellowstone’s storied elk herds, grizzly bears, wolves and bison.

Law enforcement records obtained by The

Associated Press suggest such problems are on the rise at the park, offering a stark illustration of the pressures facing some of America’s most treasured lands as the National Park Service marks its 100th anniversary.

From Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountains to the Grand Canyon of Arizona, major parks are grappling with illegal camping, vandalism, theft of resources, wildlife harassment and other visitor misbehavior, according to the records obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.

In July alone, law enforcement rangers handled more than 11,000 incidents at the 10 most visited national parks.

In Yellowstone, rangers are recording more wildlife violations, more people treading on sensitive thermal areas and more camping in off-limit areas. The rule-breaking puts visitors in harm’s way and can damage resources and displace wildlife, officials said.

Often the incidents go unaddressed, such as when Gleason and the children approached the bull elk with no park personnel around.

Gleason said he was “maybe” too close but felt comfortable in the situation as an experienced hunter who’s spent lots of time outdoors.

Mixed weather doesn’t turn away large turnout to 39th annual Corn Fest

dezjournalism@gmail.com DeKALB – The rain didn’t go away this weekend, but neither did festivalgoers as Corn Fest wrapped up its 39th year in DeKalb.

“More than twice the amount of people attended the annual festival on Friday compared to the same time last year, despite the fear of rain showers in the evening,” event organizer Lisa Angel said.

Instead, the inclement weather broke with tradition and came a day late during performances by Tiffany and 7th Heaven on Saturday evening.

“It’s funny, because the joke was ‘Every Friday night, we’ve had a downpour,’ and we didn’t have it this year. So Saturday had to make up for it,” Angel said Sunday afternoon, moments before receiving an update that a storm was about an hour away. ”Don’t jinx it!” she said into a radio hanging from her shirt collar.

Festivalgoers not only tolerated the rain that came, but also danced in it.

“The energy from this community, from this town, is crazy, and when somebody puts out that energy, it’s infectious,” Angel said. “We re not scared of getting a little wet.”

An addition to Corn Fest this year was an area in which local crafts were sold. Angel said she wants to expand the music lineup for the festival’s 40th year and hopes to see a steady growth of volunteers.

Regular Corn Fest visitors Jaimie and Peter Nellessen said that what keeps them coming back to the festival is the variety of local vendors, as well as the country rock band Back Country Road, which played Sunday afternoon.

“Corn Fest helps bring support for the small businesses in town and introduces people to the area,” Jaimie Nellessen said.

Special days make Sandwich Fair special

news@daily-chronicle.com SANDWICH – Whether it’s the scent of cotton candy, the sound of mooing dairy cattle, the taste of homemade pie or seeing older folks seated on benches in front of the Home Arts Building, it all brings back memories of the Sandwich Fair.

The 129th annual Sandwich Fair, known as the Grandmother of Fairs, will start Wednesday, Sept. 7, and play host to thousands of visitors through Sunday, Sept. 11. It’s still held on the Sandwich Fairgrounds, nearly 200 acres of oak-shaded land with plenty of free parking.

Many of the food stands and booths are operated by area churches and organizations, bringing a hometown atmosphere to the fair. It often is a place where old-timers meet, and younger folks get acquainted.

The commercial buildings and grassy areas are friendly places to look through displays of the newest RVs and campers, compare lawnmowers and check out landscaping designs.

Livestock exhibits are on the west end of the fairgrounds. Exhibition halls for horticulture, home arts, arts and photography, and antiques and collectibles are in the center of the grounds and will be filled with items entered by competitors.

The first day is Children Free Day, with children ages 12 and younger having free admission at the gate. There will be open and junior show judging all day of all exhibits, along with a Western Horse Show starting at 9 a.m. in the livestock area.

Culinary competitions will be at 2 p.m. for bountiful yeast treats, at 3:15 p.m. for junior pizza, and at 4 p.m. for pasta possibilities on the Home Arts Stage.

There will be a tented area for the audience, which will be entertained by Sherri Farley playing her hammered dulcimer before and after the contests.

Unlimited carnival ride wristbands will be $25 each from 5 p.m. until closing Wednesday, all day Thursday, and from noon to 5 p.m. Friday. Ride wristbands will be $15 and gate admission $6 from 3 p.m. to closing Sunday.

On Sept. 8, it’s Senior Citizen Bargain Day, with gate admission costing $6 until 5 p.m. Open show livestock judging continues all day.

Culinary competition continues with pumpkin bread at 11 a.m., cooking demo by Chef Darrel at 12:30 p.m., beef bonanza at 2 p.m. and celebrate chicken at 4 p.m. on the Home Arts Stage.

A Draft Horse Show starts at 9 a.m.

Sept. 9, in the livestock arena. It also is Bargain Day, when everyone is admitted at the gate for $6 until 5 p.m. Individuals with military identification can enter for free.

Culinary competitions will be chocolate lover’s dream at 11 a.m., pork extravaganza at 2 p.m. and comforting chili at 4 p.m. on the Home Arts Stage.

The junior show livestock judging begins 9 a.m. Sept. 10 and continues throughout the day.

Free shows that day are: Steve Sharp from 1 to 4 p.m. on the Ag Land Stage, the Northern Illinois Outlaws performing “Showdown in DeKalb County” at 2 p.m. in the livestock area, Phoenix from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on the Home Arts Building Stage, and Whiskey Romance from 7 to 11 p.m. on the Ag Land Stage.

On Sunday, Sept. 11, attendees are invited to worship at the fair at 8:30 a.m., with services provided by area churches on the Home Arts Building Stage. Local military veterans are in charge of the 9/11 Remembrance at 10 a.m. at the Ag Land Stage.

The Sandwich Auto Show will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring antique and classic vehicles, in the center of the racetrack.

Hot seats, reserved seats and infield seats are $20 each for the 12:30 and 6:30 p.m. Sept. 10 tractor pulls, with infield child seats priced at $5. Infield seats are $15 for adults and $5 for children for both the 1 and 3:30 p.m. Demolition Derbies on Sept. 11.

CHICAGO – Two brothers who were on parole for prior criminal activity have been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of the cousin of NBA star Dwyane Wade, Chicago police announced Sunday.

Darwin Sorrells Jr., 26, and Derren Sorrells, 22, also were charged with attempted murder in Friday’s shooting.

They appeared in court Sunday and were ordered held without bail.

Nykea Aldridge, a 32-year-old mother of four, was pushing her baby in a stroller near a school where she’d planned to register her children when she was shot in the head and arm. She wasn’t the intended target, Cmdr. Brendan Deenihan said at a news conference Sunday, but rather a driver who had just dropped off passengers in the neighborhood.

Studies: Illinois’ fixed-tuition law drives up others’ costs

CHAMPAIGN – The Illinois law that locks in tuition rates for in-state students appears to have the unintended effect of driving up tuition for out-of-state students and fees for all, according to a pair of studies from University of Illinois researchers.

The law, which took effect in 2004, guarantees a freshman at a state university will pay the same tuition rate for four years. Only three other states – Oklahoma, Texas and, as of this summer, North Carolina – have similar laws. But lawmakers in places like Utah and Idaho recently have considered or at least discussed fixed-rate tuition laws.

Such laws around the country, however, increased student fees between 2000 and 2012 by 40 percent and tuition rates for out-of-state students by 28 percent, according to a study published in the September-October issue of the Journal of

AMATRICE, Italy – Italian authorities are vowing to investigate whether negligence or fraud in adhering to building codes played a role in the high death toll in last week’s earthquake in Italy.

They also called for efforts to ensure organized crime doesn’t infiltrate lucrative construction contracts to eventually rebuild much of the picturesque towns leveled in the disaster.

Meanwhile, rescue workers pressed on with the task of recovering bodies from the rubble, with hopes of finding any more survivors virtually vanished more than four full days after the powerful quake.

Over the past two days, they found six more bodies in the rubble of Hotel Roma in Amatrice, the medieval hill town in mountainous central Italy that bore the brunt of destruction and loss of life in the powerful quake. They recovered three and by late Sunday were still working to retrieve others that were hard to reach.

It wasn’t clear whether those six were included in the overall 290 death toll given by authorities. The Civil Protection agency, which combines the figures it receives from different provinces affected by the quake, said the number is lower than the previous toll of 291 dead because of a correction in the numbers from the province of Rieti, where most of the victims died.

The quake that struck before dawn Wednesday also injured almost 400 people as it flat-

tened three medieval towns near the rugged Apennines. Prosecutor Giuseppe Saieva, based in the nearby provincial capital of Rieti, said the high human death toll “cannot only be considered the work of fate.”

“The fault lines tragically did their work and this is called destiny, but if the buildings had been built like in Japan they would not have collapsed,” Saieva said in comments carried by Italian media.

Investigations are focusing on a number of structures, including an elementary school in Amatrice that crumbled despite being renovated in 2012 to resist earthquakes at a cost of $785,000. With schoolchildren’s summer vacations in their final weeks, the school wasn’t yet in use. Many were shocked that it didn’t withstand the 6.2 magnitude quake.

After an entire first-grade class and a teacher were killed in a 2002 quake in the southern town of San Giuliano di Puglia, Italian officials had pledged citizens that the safety of schools, hospitals and other critical public buildings would be guaranteed.

Questions also surround a bell tower in Accumoli that collapsed, killing a family of four sleeping in a neighboring house, including a baby of 8 months and a 7-year-old boy. That bell tower also had been recently restored with special funds allocated after Italy’s last major earthquake, which struck nearby L’Aquila in 2009.

Italy’s national anti-Mafia prosecutor, Franco Roberti, vowed to work to prevent organized crime from infiltrating public works projects that eventually will be begun to rebuild the earthquake zone.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Threat assessment teams’ secretive record-keeping

To the Editor: College students should be aware that secret records may be maintained about them in spite of the intent of the Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) to protect them from such abuse by administrators.

After the 2008 shooting at Northern Illinois University, the Campus Security Enhancement Act was passed, requiring each higher education institution in Illinois to form a campus violence prevention plan and campus threat assessment teams. NIU calls theirs the Student Threat Assessment Team (STAT) and its manual mentions a database used for recording cases.

The STAT is not widely publicized on the NIU website, the manual is not available there, and the Faculty Senate minutes even show one administrator claiming it’s important that we not necessarily have lots of conversations with students about the fact that there’s a Student Threat Assessment Team.

Three other public universities have limited information about their threat assessment teams on their website: Southern Illinois University – Carbondale, University of Illinois – Springfield, and Western Illinois University.

How can a student request access to their records if they are unaware they exist? If they make a request for all of their education records it would hopefully be included in the response. When I tried that, however, general counsel denied that such a broad request can be filled.

I suspected the STAT database would have records on me and requested them. What I received back shows that STAT was compiling information about me, including my veteran medical records and whether I possessed a FOID card. These records also mention the lawsuit I filed against the student association and a complaint I submitted to the Office of Civil Rights.

Neither of those are threatening or concerning behaviors and are entirely acceptable actions within the legal system to protect my rights. Some records are as accurate as rumors, so I worry how they might affect future decisions against me.

There’s a legitimate interest in threat assessment, and determining whether a potentially threatening student has a FOID card is probably appropriate. Obtaining access to medical records might also be, but that seems like a gray area. However, there appears to be little control over what information is available to threat assessment teams and providing it only on a need-to-know basis, or on how to redress any unwarranted invasions of privacy.

I believe there should be significant review of these plans by student and privacy advocates.

While the experts rarely link a single event to global warming – and climate scientists have not said that it caused the devastating Louisiana floods – they point to increased rainfall and flooding as a likely result of a warmer climate.

As president, Obama has done more to mitigate climate change than any of his predecessors. Unable to budge a recalcitrant Congress, he nevertheless has managed to push through tightened vehicle emissions standards as well as stricter regulations for coal-fired power plants.

He also helped lead the successful effort to secure a global agreement to reduce carbon emissions.

Trump, by contrast, has joined up with the flat-earth Republican chorus that insists climate change is a “hoax.” As the imaginative GOP nominee once tweeted: “The concept

of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.”

Tell that to the Californians who are suffering through the fifth year of a severe drought -- with not only acute water shortages, but also devastating wildfires. Tell that to the Brazilians and Central Americans who are living through the Zika epidemic, believed to be spread by mosquitoes, which breed more easily in a warming climate. Tell that to the leaders of the Marshall Islands, who worry that their nation may not exist in a few decades because of rising oceans caused by warmer temperatures.

Climatologists say the 10 hottest years on record have all occurred since 1998. Last year took the medal for all-time high, but scientists now believe 2016 will best that record.

Warmer temperatures lead not only to more devastating droughts, but also, counter-intuitively, to more rainfall in certain areas.

That’s because warmer air is capable of holding more moisture.

By any measure, the rainfall and resulting flooding that struck a wide swath of southern Louisiana earlier this month was historic. The storm occurred over several days and didn’t attract the attention that me-

teorologists give to major weather events such as Hurricane Katrina.

But experts are calling it the worst natural disaster in the United States since Hurricane Sandy hit the Northeast in 2012. (The damage from Sandy was also exacerbated by climate change, which created more flooding because of rising oceans.)

Neighborhoods believed to be safely outside the floodplain were inundated with water. Tens of thousands of people have been left homeless, and more than a dozen were killed.

And while Louisiana has seen the worst flooding of late, it’s not the only state that has suffered. Five other states – Texas, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Maryland and Virginia – have all experienced severe flooding in the last 15 months. Those hundred-year events are coming with increasing frequency.

Trump, like his fellow Republicans, will continue to deny that climate change has anything to do with the severe weather events that just keep on coming. His visit to Louisiana, then, is much like the rest of his campaign: an episode from an un-reality show.

If Hillary wins the presidency, she should close the Clinton Foundation The latest bunch of Clinton-era State Department emails released this week provide a host of instances in which donations to the Clinton Foundation netted the donors access to the secretary herself on an expedited basis.

It was a shocking system, even by Clinton standards.

The latest group of previously undisclosed emails released by Judicial Watch, which obtained them through a court order, showed that Clinton’s top aide, Huma Abedin, served as a facilitator between the foundation and the State Department.

The documents included 20 Hillary Clinton email exchanges not among the 55,000 pages turned over to State – yes, likely among those “wedding plans” deleted from her personal server.

Many of the exchanges document how Clinton Foundation executive Doug Band had only to shoot a quick email to Abedin about, say, how much trouble Crown Prince Salman of Bahrain ($32 million donor to the Clinton Global Initiative plus at least $50,000 from the Kingdom to the foundation) was having getting in to see “hrc.” Well, would tomorrow be

soon enough?

And then there’s the exchange about Slimfast tycoon S. Daniel Abraham (donor of between $5 million and $10 million to the foundation) who just wanted 15 minutes of the secretary’s time. No problem, even if her plane had to be kept waiting. St. Louis political power broker Joyce Aboussie (between $100,000 and $250,000 to the foundation) wanted to bring by an executive from Peabody Energy. “Working on it,” Abedin responded.

The newly released emails also show that the effort to put Rajiv

Fernando ($1 million foundation donor) on the sensitive International Security Advisory Board, despite an utter lack of experience, dated back to June 2009. Appointed in 2011, he was later forced to resign.

Bill Clinton’s pledge to ban foreign and corporate donations to the foundation should Hillary be elected leaves way too much wiggle room for precisely the kind of access-buying that ran rampant during Mrs. Clinton’s State Department years.

Nothing short of closing up shop will do.

President Barack Obama’s visit to flood-ravaged Louisiana didn’t assuage those critics who lambasted him for his failure to come earlier, but he didn’t expect it to. As he noted while there, “This is not a photo-op issue. This is, how do you make sure that (months) from now, people still are getting the help that they need?”

The president has learned to live with the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune – as well as the outrageous accusations of his arrow-slinging detractors. It goes with the territory.

Still, it’s no surprise that Republican nominee Donald Trump attempted to gain electoral advantage over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, an Obama ally, by visiting Louisiana before the president did.

Trump gained positive press coverage and accolades, not only from his GOP allies, but also from a stalwart Democrat, Louisiana native James Carville.

“Donald Trump came – thank you, Donald Trump. He gave $100,000 to a church in Greenwell Springs. It was very effective,” Carville said in an appearance on Fox News.

But those who are genuinely concerned about the catastrophe in southern Louisiana ought to be

Marlyn Majorettes and Drum Corps topic of presentation DAILY CHRONICLE One of Sycamore’s living legends is Maryln Burkart, and she will share her memories of the Marlyn Majorettes and Drum Corps along with several of her former students as part of the Sycamore History Museum’s Sept. 1 brown bag lunch.

Marlyn’s Majorettes and Drum Corps were seen in parades throughout the country and won more than 1,000 honors in international, national and state competitions. Those who participated quickly learned that hard work, commitment and high expectations were an important part of their experience with Marlyn Burkart.

Competing throughout the country and taking first place many times, including in the World Championship in 1975-76, this group performed at the Orange Bowl, the Indy 500, the Grand Ole Opry, the Chicago Christmas Parade,and New York’s World’s Fair.

Joining Burkart will be Joy Bougren Nelson, a former majorette; Maxine Maness Scott, a member of the “Original 12;” and Tom Hackler, who was in the drum corps.

Burkart is one of the 50 people featured in the Sycamore History Museum’s “Faces of Sycamore.”

This exhibit highlights the stories of people that have made a difference in the community.

This brown bag lunch will be at noon at the Sycamore History Museum, 1730 N. Main St. The program is free and open to the public; donations are welcome. Coffee and cookies are provided.

Public star-viewing party set at Afton Forest Preserve DAILY CHRONICLE

The Northwest Suburban Astronomers, in cooperation with the DeKalb County Forest Preserve District, will host a public star party Sept. 3 at the Afton Forest Preserve (north entrance) in DeKalb County.

Look at stars, galaxies, nebulae and star clusters with the help of NSA member telescopes. Observing highlights may include the planets Saturn and Mars, the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), nebula M57 (Ring Nebula), galaxies M81 and M82 (Bode’s Galaxy and the Cigar Galaxy), and globular clusters M22 (Sagittarius Cluster) and M13 (Hercules Cluster), among others.

Dress for a chilly evening and bring a flashlight covered with red plastic or cellophane (red light preserves everyone’s night vision), as well as insect repellent. Arrive around 7 p.m. (sunset is shortly after 7:15 p.m.). Attendees can bring their own telescope or binoculars. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be canceled. There is no cost to attend and no registration is required.

Illinois AMVETS Post 90 will host a day of activities Sept. 10 to honor local heroes.

Both Patriot Day and MIA/POW Day fall in the month of September. To recognize these heroes, Post 90 will host a blood drive and Honors Ceremony at the post located at 421 Oak St. in DeKalb.

The blood drive will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Honors Ceremony will be at 2 p.m. and feature a flag presentation and rifle salute. Stroker Red will play from 2:30 to 6 p.m.

‘I have to give the offense a spark’

Versatile on offense, Turner becomes game-changer on kick returns

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – After nearly every time the Toledo football team scored against Northern Illinois last season, Aregeros Turner responded with a strong kickoff return for the Huskies.

Turner, who would end up being the Mid-American Conference Special Teams Player of the Year, gave the offense life to help Northern Illinois stay in the game until the Huskies came away with a dramatic 32-27 road win over their rival after losing starting quarterback Drew Hare.

“Whenever I’m back there, it’s because the [opposing] offense just scored; so when I’m back there, I have the mentality that I have to give the offense a spark,” Turner said. “Even if it’s a nice 30-yard return, if I make the sideline excited, then hopefully the offense will come out with some juice.”

Against the Rockets, Turner had five returns for 168 yards – including ones of 58 yards and 37 yards, both of

which resulted in field goals for the Huskies.

However, Toledo wasn’t the only team Turner torched on special teams last season. He had 172 return yards against Boise State (including a 96yard touchdown), 117 returns yards against Boston College (including an 86-yard touchdown return), 152 yards against Buffalo and 90 yards on only two returns at Central Michigan.

“I was surprised that they still kicked it to me, but I wasn’t complaining,” Turner said.

Opposing teams kicked it to him a lot, too. He finished the year leading the FBS with 1,181 kick return yards (26.2 per attempt) – although his 45 attempts were three more than anybody else in the nation. Only three players had 40 or more returns on the year – Turner, Rutgers’ Janarion Grant (No. 5 in the nation) and East Tennessee State’s Domenique Williams (No. 10).

However, Turner was far from being pigeonholed as a kick return specialist.

He also was one of the Huskies’ most

valuable pieces on offense. He finished with 39 catches for 343 yards and a touchdown and 24 carries for 152 yards (6.3 per attempt) and a touchdown.

“He can do a lot of things,” Northern Illinois first-year offensive coordinator Mike Uremovich said. “He can catch the ball; obviously, he can run with it.

He’s really good on special teams for us, so we try to get our best players the ball, and he’s definitely one of our best players. It creates problems for the defense because they have to figure out who’s covering him and whether they really want to put a linebacker on him or not.”

Turner’s versatility was a major asset for the Huskies offense, which averaged 31.1 points and nearly 400 yards of offense a game. A running back out of Copley High School (Ohio), Turner has emerged as a wide receiver for the Huskies, playing both on the outside and at slot – and even lining up as a running back and out of the wildcat formation at times, too.

“You have to know more of the de-

fense – because, you know, when you’re outside, you have to know how the corners are going to play you; but when you go in the slot, you have to know about the linebackers and the safeties over the top,” Turner said. “Really, it’s film study. You have to study more film to play more positions and know the playbook more than other players who only play one position.”

It doesn’t matter where he lines up, as long as he gets the ball, Turner said.

He said he’s been working to clean up his route running, and Uremovich praised not only what he can do on offense, but also the value he brings on special teams.

Although Turner said he was both surprised he won the MAC Conference Player and the Year but also felt he earned it, he has his eyes on a different conference honor this season.

“I was surprised, but I also felt like I deserved it after the numbers I put up,” Turner said. “But Special Teams Player of the Year? I’m trying to be Offensive Player of the Year.”

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – The Northern Illinois University volleyball team lost in straight sets Sunday afternoon to the Iowa Hawkeyes, 25-20, 25-22 and 2523.

Although the Huskies managed to create leads in the second and third sets, they were not able to hold to them.

“A lot of it is just execution,” Huskies coach Ray Gooden said. “There were a lot of positives today, though. Understanding key situations as the game went on, we threw up a lot of good blocks and turning the right play at the right time.”

The Huskies’ net front presence was big in keeping them competitive with the Hawkeyes, especially in the second and third games. They outblocked the Hawkeyes, 116, through three games. Junior outside hitter Taylor Krage led the team in hitting percentage with nine kills and two errors on 22 attempts, a percentage of .318.

“We have to make sure that we keep pushing them,” Krage said. “When you’re up a couple of points late and the other team starts to get frantic, you have to stay heavy on them.”

Junior setter Chandler Kinley was all over the floor for the Huskies. She had 17 assists and five digs. At one point, she leapt into the NIU bench in an attempt to save a point, covering at least 35 feet of floor in the process.

“Aggression has always been a part of my game,” Kinley said. “I know my teammates would do the same thing for me, so it comes with it.”

For the Hawkeyes, coach Bond Shymansky was excited to see his team play so relentlessly against a what he called a great NIU program.

“Playing here at NIU is like playing in a sweat-box/noisebox. It is one of the hardest environments to play in. Our chemistry and culture is really starting to come along here in Year 3 [of Shymansky’s tenure], and it really helps us in tight moments.”

Iowa junior libero/DS Annika Olsen spent much of her day on the hardwood, amassing 22 digs. She also gave the Huskies problems in the second set with a serve that is best described as akin to a knuckleball in baseball. Her serve is extremely slow, high in the air and has no rotation, causing the ball to knuckle and take unpredictable flight paths off the hands of the receiving team.

“I stand really far back in the corner and just launch it,” Olsen said of her serve. “The way our team plays, a ball will not hit the floor without one of us hitting the floor after it.”

The Huskies still have a few more tournaments left to go before they are headed into Mid-American Conference play. They will be traveling to North Dakota, Hawaii and Washington, D.C., in the coming weeks for different invitationals.

Gooden said the Huskies need to build on their experience.

“We have players that are playing in new roles. We’ll be working on cohesion and getting used to having players in new spots. That will get us

MAPLE PARK – In the middle of a densely wooded forest preserve, there is a narrow clearing of prairie grass and a storm shelter that the Kaneland boys cross country team comes to to get better – not just at running, but also at battling the elements.

One afternoon, as coach Chad Clarey explains the rules for an intra-squad scrimmage, the sounds of slaps intermittently break up the cadence of Clarey’s words against the ambient noise of the forest.

The bugs are that bad.

And with that, they’re off on a run of about 2.5 miles. Clarey goes on to work on getting the finish of the course ready for when the first of his runners cross the finish line.

“All of these teams are evenly comprised,” Clarey said to his runners as they took off.

“Every team is within one or two points of one another. Anyone can win this scrimmage.

Every single runner in this program should be able to challenge for a spot in a top seven.”

The runner who breaks out to an early lead is Kaneland’s best, junior Matthew Richtman.

Richtman is a two-year varsity runner going into his junior year, running a 15:04 as a sophomore.

“He is a very intellectual runner,” Clarey said. “That allows him to challenge himself internally. As an individual, he challenges himself to get better every day in practice. That sort of self-motivation is huge when you don’t have guys like Austin Kintz, William Kuipers and Sean Spaetzel [graduated members of last season’s Kaneland team] to push you.”

Richtman has been putting that internal fire to good use. He has been working on stretching himself out longer distances over the summer.

“Longer miles, longer training and more difficult workouts,” Richtman said of his summer itinerary. “Our top seven is really close together. We should have a great pack split this year. Hopefully, we will make some magic happen this season.”

Richtman’s 15:04 at the IHSA State Championship meet was good for 18th overall (39 seconds off the state champion Jack Aho of Grayslake Central). Richtman is looking to improve upon that for his junior season.

“I’m hoping to go down there and just get better,” Richtman said.

Clarey’s team is very deep. With Richtman leading the way, there are several quality runners on the Kaneland squad.

“So far, I would say that some of the greatest leadership that we have gotten this year is from a runner who doesn’t really get a whole lot of the spotlight,” Clarey said. “That runner is [senior] Anthony Messina. He has been all in since we started in June. He’s not afraid to call out any runner that isn’t pushing to his

Kaneland wins WN tourney: The Knights went 3-0 to win the Wheaton North tournament.

The Knights beat Glenbard West, 25-17, 25-22, for the title. The Knights beat Wheaton North, 21-25, 25-16, 25-22, in the semifinals and opened with a 25-19, 25-18 win over Yorkville.

Katie Jablonski had 35 kills on the day, with Jessie Weber adding 22. Hannah Nauert had 84 assists, and Jessica Nguyen added 21 digs to earn a spot on the all-tournament team with Jablonski.

Indian Creek loses at Ottawa: The Timberwolves lost in straight sets to Coal City and in three to Flanagan-Cornell.

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – After winning three straight Barb Cups from 2012 to 2014, the DeKalb boys soccer team now has lost two straight Barb Cup finals, as it was defeated Saturday

by Yorkville, 1-0, in DeKalb.

The first half was back and forth, with both teams struggling for offensive chances, and the game still was scoreless at the half. In the second half, the Foxes came out and put consistent offensive pressure on the Barbs, which culminated in Bobby Reichert scoring for the Foxes in the 21st minute. The Barbs sought an equalizer, but were turned away on two corner kick chances in the final few minutes,.

“Yorkville’s got some size and experience on us,” Barb coach Brent McIntosh said. “We knew they would have those in their favor, and we wanted to take away some of their numbers. But I think

Yorkville now has started the season 4-0 and looks to be a formidable opponent for the Barbs in upcoming conference play. But Fox coach Andrew Johnson said his team doesn’t take anything for granted from this early-season victory.

“I’m more of a big picture kind of coach,” Johnson said. “The victory is nice, and we know we can beat them; but at the same time, we’ve given them some ammunition now.

We’ve got the championship, and that’s nice, but we’re going to need to stay focused when we come back to this field. We always play tight ball games with these guys – we never blow each other out. So it’ll be tough coming back, but we look forward to it.”

The Barbs suffered their first loss of the season after starting 2-0, but McIntosh said he is pleased with the maturity his team has shown in the first three games, and he looks forward to seeing players such as juniors Lincoln Draper and Trevor Espy step up into leadership roles.

“We’re going to use this loss as fuel for conference, and we’re going to come back stronger than ever,” Espy said. “I want to see us all mature more, and really start playing as a team. It’s tough early in the season, but I’d like to see us all on the same page.”

The Barbs’ next match will be Tuesday in DeKalb versus Hononegah.

Jesus Lara seemingly connected on a penalty kick for the Genoa-Kingston boys soccer team Saturday in the championship game of the Stillman Valley tournament against Galesburg, but it was called off for hesitation.

Galesburg won in the next round, topping the Cogs, 1-0.

Coach Randy Tate said the hesitation is a new rule.

“It was unfortunate for us, but in a shootout, anything can happen; and this time, we came out on the short end of the stick,” Tate said.

Zach Edwards notched the shutout for the Cogs (3-0-1).

IC splits a pair: The Timberwolves beat Marengo, 3-2, after losing to Orion, 4-2.

Trevor Guerra and Austin Sommerfeld had the goals against Orion, which scored two goals in the first three minutes, then added two late after Indian Creek (1-4) could have taken the lead on a penalty kick.

Against Marengo, Michael Gaston ended up with the game winner after Danny Cassidy scored two in the first half.

Talk to your teenager about sex or somebody else will Dear Dr. K: I’m the parent of a teenage girl. I know it’s time to talk to her about sex, and I’d appreciate any advice.

Dear Reader: Many parents feel anxious or uncomfortable talking with their children about sex. But remember that if you don’t, somebody else will.

Teens get lots of information (and misinformation) about sex from their friends, the internet, television, magazines, books and movies. It’s up to you to make your child understand what it really means to have sex, both physically and emotionally.

Don’t worry that you will be “putting ideas” into your teen’s head. Many parents I’ve talked to are concerned having the conversation will encourage their kids to try it. In fact, teens who talk openly with their parents usually wait longer to have sex – and they are more likely to use birth control when they do.

Whether to have sex outside of marriage is a personal question, and I’m not going to weigh in on that. But it is important you state your own views regarding at what point in a relationship sex is appropriate. At the same time, don’t insist your child share your views. My colleagues who specialize in adolescent medicine tell me teens often are naturally rebellious and resist attempts to tell them what to do.

It is very important to teach your child how to say no firmly. Coach your daughter to say “no” while looking her partner in the face. Again, it’s one thing to talk to your daughter about how to say “no,”

I wouldn’t describe all of the sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in detail.

That can come across as scare-mongering and cause some kids to tune out. But I would list all of the STIs: Most kids don’t realize how many there are.

By the same token, I wouldn’t stress that some of them, if unrecognized and untreated, can be fatal. I would emphasize some of them can make it hard or impossible for a woman to bear children.

I would describe the facts about birth control. The points I’d be sure to make are no birth control is 100 percent effective, and many types of birth control will not protect against STIs. The only way to be entirely safe is not to have sex.

Finally, I’d explain sexually active females need to have a pelvic exam every year. Offer to take her to a gynecologist or pediatrician if and when she decides to have sex.

Most important, be there for your teenager. Listen to her questions and try to answer every one. Let her know that whatever choices she makes, she will always have your love and support.

Clearly, America is in a state Jeanne of turmoil. I am Phillips horrified and ashamed of the senseless death occurring daily.

I deal with anxiety, particularly regarding fear of death. As a result, the only thing I’ve found I can do to cope with current events is to scan headlines, and ask my understanding husband for a synopsis of events that doesn’t include major triggers.

However, I feel serious guilt I may not be fully educating myself on recent events. Am I wrong to prioritize my mental well-being over the gravity of our country’s current situation? – Serious Guilt Dear Serious Guilt: Wrong? Absolutely not.

According to The Journal of the American Medical Association, 13 percent of Americans now use antidepressants to combat depression and anxiety. Our news media feed so many salacious details into our homes in the interest of high ratings it’s a miracle the majority of Americans aren’t in need of them.

If you are getting the news you need to know, do not feel guilty for using your husband as a filter. You are only protecting yourself, and that’s not wrong. It’s healthy.

Dear Abby: My sister-in-law “Dani” and my brother have been married almost three years. I recently discovered Dani has created a fake social media page. She posted some nude photos on it and acts like she’s single.

Declarer seemed to have 10 easy tricks: two spades, six hearts, one diamond and one club. In addition, there were chances for extra winners in the black suits. However, South could not resist the temptation to try to win the first trick. But when East ruffed the diamond ace and shifted to the club jack, declarer could not recover. He tried the club finesse, but West won, cashed the diamond queen, and continued with the diamond jack. A moment later, when the spade finesse lost, South was down one.

Since West’s overcall had announced an eight-card suit, declarer should have played low from the board at trick one ... and at trick two.

East can ruff away the diamond ace at trick three, but South overruffs, draws trumps, and runs the spade jack to take three spades, six hearts and one club.
