Looking back on changes in local media POLL Editor’s Note: After “retiring” about 10 months ago, Barry Schrader is returning to the Daily Chronicle with his bi-weekly column DeKalb County Life. He was editor of the Chronicle from 1969 through 1972 when he left for the West Coast, then returned to his roots in DeKalb County in 2006. He first began writing this column in 2007.

Daily Chronicle Editor Eric Olson rekindled a simmering “fire in my belly” when he recently wrote about all the past editors of the newspaper and said I was the only one still writing here.

Since I have tried “retiring” from my column twice in recent years, he is willing to give me one more shot at it – but there is a “three strikes law” that says once you swing and miss a third time you are “out.” So here I am, back at bat in the bottom of the ninth, hoping to go extra innings, as they say in baseball.

Anyway, his column listing all the editors back to our godfather Clinton Rosette, circa 1879, really puts into perspective how times have changed and editors come and go more frequently from the 1970s on into this new century.

One reason for the turnover is that back in the “early days” editors usually owned or co-owned the newspaper, so had a vested interest in continuing in the job as long as their health permitted. That is why the first generation of editors-owners at the Chronicle “died with their boots on” so to speak, keeping their positions until the day they died. Then their offspring took over, in this case Bob Greenaway and the Raymond brothers – Chuck and Eddie.

When they finally sold the paper in early 1969, it was purchased by Scripps-Hagadone, based in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho, so the publishers and editors since that time, through three more changes in group ownership, have been employees of the parent company, not the owners. As employees, they felt freer to change jobs, move on to other papers or even change careers. A few were

At the present time we find the Chronicle and its sister paper The MidWeek owned by a privately held company, Shaw Media, which began with the Dixon Telegraph 165 years ago and has expanded to owning dozens of papers in the region. Most recently they named a “known local” publisher Karen Pletsch, whose husband, the late Lloyd Pletsch, was editor here from 1981 to 1995 while Karen worked in advertising.

By my count there have been only three local people named publisher since the chain ownerships began in 1969. The first was Ray Robinson, advertising manger who became publisher in 1972, and then Roger Warkins, formerly circulation manager who was publisher of another Scripps-Hagadone paper before being moved back to DeKalb as publisher.

Coincidentally, my old college classmate on the campus paper, Jerry Smith, just shared with me a 1970 newspaper photo of us while we were competing editors. He was editor of the fledgling DeKalb County Journal owned by John Castle and company, while I edited the Chronicle.

In the photo are a young Barry Schrader, panel moderator Joanne Frisch from the League of Women Voters, the late Russ Pigott, news director of WLBK radio for about 20 years (remember him on Party Line?) who later owned his own camera store, Northern Illinois Photography, until his death in 1994, and a very young-looking Jerry Smith, the aforementioned editor, who is now a good friend.

DeKalb School District 428 welcomes students to new year

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The new school year began Wednesday for the more than 6,300 DeKalb School District 428 students amid an early morning rainstorm, but teams of staff at the district’s 11 schools helped make sure the kids got off to a positive start.

It had been a tense few weeks before the start of school, with the threat of a teachers strike. But negotiations that went late into the evening Aug. 12 yielded a deal that teachers signed off on five days later, and the school board approved it Saturday.

So, school bells rang on time Wednesday.

“The schools are ready, the teachers are ready,” said Superintendent Doug Moeller, who began the day at DeKalb High School. “I just hope they all have a positive attitude and look forward to a good year.”

Some parents at Founders Elementary weren’t aware of the new process for dropping students off who arrive by vehicle. But a slew of staff and the bright markings on the newly redone and painted pavement helped with navigation – especially with the rain.

Kids hopped out of cars and were immediately led into the building and off to their new classrooms.

“Our expectations are for (everyone) to be responsible, respectful and be ready. So we’re really just going to focus on those this year,” Founders Principal Connie Rohlman said. “If we do those things then we’re going to do lots of learning.”

Rohlman is new at Founders this year. She came to the school from Malta Elementary, a school half the size of Founders, and replaced Kristen Smith.

The new principal also welcomed several new teachers to the school, a few of whom were hired within the past week.

Founders has one of the largest student counts among the district’s eight elementary schools. Rohlman said the school has 22 sections of classes: Kindergarten through second grade and fourth grade each have four classrooms of students; so far, there are three rooms each of third- and fifth-graders.

“At this point, we’re not concerned.

But we’ll see if more students register how we’ll handle that,” said Rohlman, who has been with the district for 26

years, 10 of them at Malta.

Class size was an issue for teachers as they negotiated their new contract. They had asked for caps on the number of students per class, but the school district prevailed on that issue with no limits being placed in the contract.

Founders and other schools also received a bunch of new students as a result of new address boundaries.

Last spring, the school board redrew the boundaries that schools serve. Moeller said the change still kept about the same number of students in each school building.

Starting this year, eight students get to attend school a bit closer to home as the district reconstituted its deaf and hard of hearing program. The students faced having to move with their previous program to another school building that would have been a one-hour-each-way commute.

Administrators decided last spring to bring the program and the students back to Tyler Elementary School and Clinton Rosette Middle School. Cristy Meyer, head of special education for the district, said six new staff were

It also was a big day for Michelle Albano, DeKalb High School’s new principal, and at least 19 new teachers.

She was hired in April and officially started July 1, and welcomed students

Police seek information on abandoned 53-foot trailer near Shabbona Grove DAILY CHRONICLE

SHABBONA GROVE – The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public for help after finding an abandoned 53-foot trailer that appeared to have struck a railroad trestle in southwestern DeKalb County.

Deputies were called to Shabbona Grove Road west of Johnson Road after a report shortly after 5 a.m.

Tuesday that a trailer was parked on the road. Deputies found the 53-foot trailer about 400 yards from the underpass, according to a news release

from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies believe the semitrailer had detached the 53-foot trailer after hitting the railroad trestle. The 53foot trailer had extensive damage, according to the release.

Representatives for Union Pacific Railroad inspected the bridge and railroad trestle and deemed them safe, according to the release.

The incident remained under investigation as of Wednesday afternoon. Investigators are asking anyone who may have seen the driver to call the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department at 815-895-2155.

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Some local roads will be closed Saturday morning for the 35th annual Corn Classic 3K and 10K events.

Registration still is available for the races, both of which begin near Huntley Middle School, 1515 S. Fourth St., DeKalb. The 3K run begins at 7:55 a.m., while the 10K run starts at 8 a.m. The cost is $35 to participate in the 10K, and

$25 for the 3K. For children younger than 10 participating in the 3K the cost is $5.

Register online at the race website, www.dekalbcornclassic.org.

There will be temporary road closures while the race is in progress, notably of Barb Boulevard and part of South First Street near Interstate 88. It typically takes about 2 hours for all runners to finish the 10-kilometer course.

Donations sought for Louisiana flood victims DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Boy Scout Troop 33 in DeKalb is accepting donations for flood victims in Louisiana through Wednesday, Aug. 31.

There are two drop-off locations where people can leave donations.

One will be at Corn Fest in downtown DeKalb at the volunteer tent at the corner of Third Street and Lincoln Highway. Items can be dropped off any time during the festival.

The second drop-off location is at First Lutheran Church, 324 N. Third St. in DeKalb. Drop-off times are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday until Wednesday.

Whatever is collected will be delivered to Louisiana during the Labor Day weekend.

The donation list is limited to baby items, toiletries and cleaning supplies, all of which are in critical need. Gift cards also will be accepted.

Baby items: Disposable diapers, baby wipes, baby food, baby formula,

sippy cups and bottles.

Toiletries: Hand sanitizer, shampoo, conditioner, bar soap, hand soap, deodorant, maxi-pads, adult diapers, disposable razors, shaving cream and toilet paper.

Cleaning supplies: Heavy-duty latex gloves, buckets, mops, bleach, cleaning detergents, scrub brushes, breathing masks, Shockwave for mold, garbage bags, paper towels and plastic storage tubs with tops.

No used clothing: Used clothing is not being accepted. It’s not a great need at this time.

Louisiana flooding has created disaster areas in 20 parishes this month and has displaced thousands of people in and around Baton Rouge. Items donated will be delivered to critical areas to serve those victims displaced.

The Louisiana flood is considered the worst natural disaster since Hurricane Sandy. Boy Scout Troop 33 has responded to hurricane, tornado and flood disasters in the past. A group of Troop 33 Scouts will go to Louisiana to work over Christmas break.

OBITUARIES JOSEPH S. HURSH Joseph S. Hursh, died suddenly on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016.

Joseph was born in DeKalb, graduated from DeKalb High School and received his undergraduate degree from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. He graduated with his MBA from Western Governor’s University.

Joseph lived and worked in St. Louis for the past four years. He loved to travel and had the opportunity to travel abroad regularly in his role as international franchise trainer for Build-a-Bear Workshop. Joseph enjoyed scuba diving, kayaking and just about anything having to do with the ocean and water.

He was an avid photographer and writer.

The homes on the market weren’t selling as quickly either. The average number of days on market until sale was 77 days in July, up 13.2 percent from 68 days in July 2015. For the year, sales are moving at a faster clip.

Through July, the average number of days on market until sale was 72, down 12.2 percent from 82 days during the same period in 2015.

Statewide, sales were also down, but prices were up, according to IAR. Statewide home sales last month totaled 16,108 homes sold, down 6.8 percent from 17,291 in July 2015.

DeKALB – Home sales in DeKalb County fell 1.6 percent last month as the inventory of homes on the market decreased by double-digits and prices slipped.

There were 123 existing homes sold in DeKalb County in July, down 1.6 percent from 125 sales in July 2015, according to figures released Wednesday by the Illinois Association of Realtors.

Closed sales were down 1.6 percent to 690 sales during the first seven months of the year, compared with 701 sales during the same time period in 2015.

The median sales price in the county decreased 3.4 percent to $157,500, down from $163,000 in July 2015. However, prices remain up so far this year compared with last year. The median sales price at the end of July was $151,000, or 4.1 percent higher than the median sales price of $145,000 during the same time period in 2015.

Single-family home median sales prices rose 1.8 percent to $168,000 in July while condo prices fell 1.4 percent to $137,000. The IAR report notes that activity for one month can look extreme because of small sample size.

A: If you want a 19th century sofa you should buy from a knowledgeable dealer.

So little of the frame shows, and it is difficult to tell a 19th-century sofa from an early 20th-century one. We once told the boss at a house sale that we would pay the asking price for a sofa if we could slit the back upholstery to be sure the frame was old. The marks from old tools said it was old, and we bought it. Smell any old upholstered furniture. Often, the smell will not leave. Decide if the upholstery is a color and condition you want to live with. Re-upholstering furniture is very expensive. Sit on the sofa to be sure it is comfortable. Some seats are low, bumpy, too narrow or much harder than most modern pieces. Some of that can be fixed with decorative pillows. Be sure you can get it in your van or car. If you want to use it in a basement or secondfloor room, the stairs may have too low a ceiling or a turn that makes it impossible to take it inside. But if all looks OK, you will have a sturdy bargain.

Q: I’d like some information about an iron lamp marked “Goberg.”

A: “Goberg” was made by Hugo Berger in Schmalkalden, Germany, beginning in 1895. He was part of the Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) movement in Germany. Candelabras, lamps and other decorative objects were made in iron and brass.

Some pieces were covered with varnish to prevent rust. Most Goberg items were sold in department stores in Europe. *** Q: I have some of Russel Wright olivegreen glazed dinnerware, including large platters. I’d like to sell them. Is there a market for these? Where can I sell them and what price range would they sell for?

A: Russel Wright (1904-1976) was an American designer of domestic and industrial wares, including dinnerware, glassware, furniture, radios and interiors. He made several dinnerware patterns in modern shapes for different manufacturers. The most popular is his first line, American Modern, which was made by Steubenville Pottery Co. from 1939 until 1959. It was made in several solid colors. Matching glassware and linens also were made. Sets of dinnerware are hard to sell. First, you should find which pattern you have. Check to see what pieces are selling for online.

Serving pieces sell for more than plates or cups and saucers. A perfect platter could be worth about $50 and a dinner plate $5, depending on the color. *** Q: My childhood teddy bear is, I am told, a Steiff and valuable. What determines the price?

A: Some Steiff teddy bears sell for thousands of dollars but many things influence the price. A real Steiff should have a button in the ear that says Steiff.

The high-priced bears are old and have mohair fabric in a rare color. White, lavender, black or red is best. Older bears are stuffed with straw, kapok, excelsior or sawdust, not polyester. Any nylon or plastic part suggests a newer bear, worth a lower price. Very large and very small bears are expensive. “Well-loved”

All in excellent condition in a leather, velvet-lined case. We are wondering if the set has any value, other than sentimental.

A: Your silver-plated flatware is not as old as you think it is. The pattern name is Lady Betty and was introduced by International Silver Co. of Meriden, Connecticut, in 1940. The company was formed when some independent silver makers merged in 1898. Silver plating by electricity began (in the U.S.) in 1847, earlier in England. By the 1880s, more than 40 firms, mostly centered near Meriden, made simple to elaborate silver-plated tableware until the 1980s. Silver-plated items generally have a modest value unless they are either very fancy or very rare. Your flatware is not worth muchunder $100 - and places that buy silver to melt are looking for sterling silver, not silver plate.

In the unsanitary world of the 18th and 19th century, bad smells were everywhere. There was no garbage pickup, no indoor flushing toilets and no refrigeration to keep food from spoiling. In the 1800s, a special lamp was used to remove the strong odors in hospitals and mortuaries. It was a catalytic lamp that burned an alcohol-based fuel. A cotton wick burned for a few minutes to heat a stone. After the flame was out, the heated stone turned odors into carbon dioxide and water. In 1897, a Frenchman improved the lamp by adding perfume to the fuel to make a scented room. Many lamps were made in figural shapes suitable for a living room or bedroom. Today, perfume lamps heat with electricity. The best 20th-century perfume lamps were made by French makers Robj, Aladin or Etling. A perfume lamp shaped like an Art Deco chorus girl sold at a Skinner auction in 2015, in Boston for $1,968. The 10-inch lamp was marked “Meu Bach Aladin.”

CHICAGO – Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration says a pending move

by Illinois’ largest public-pension fund would increase the state’s required payment by hundreds of millions of dollars, potentially leading to higher taxes or massive cuts to education and social services already suffering amid a budget crisis.

The board of the Teachers Retirement System, which serves more than 400,000 teachers outside of Chicago, is scheduled to vote Friday on whether to lower its expected rate of return on investments. A reduction would trigger a larger contribution from the state, where the Republican governor and Democrat-led Legislature have gone more than a year without agreeing on how to close a multibillion-dollar budget hole or address a $111 billion unfunded pension liability.

CHICAGO – Higher prices and fewer choices on the Illinois marketplace under President Barack Obama’s health insurance law will make choosing a plan for 2017 a potentially frustrating experience for families who buy their own coverage, according to information released Wednesday by the Illinois Department of Insurance.

Statewide, an average price increase of 43 percent is ahead for a popular type of middle-tier coverage used as a benchmark under the health law, the department said. The price of that benchmark plan – the second lowest cost Silver plan – will increase by as much as 71 percent in Madison, Monroe and St. Clair counties.

Lack of choice is another problem. In eight counties, only one company – Blue Cross Blue Shield – will sell individual coverage for 2017. Major insurers such as Aetna and UnitedHealthcare have left the health law’s marketplaces in Illinois and

The possible board action comes as pension systems nationwide are reporting lackluster returns for the most recent fiscal year, and analysts and credit rating agencies are increasingly pressuring them to lower assumptions to ensure there’s enough money to pay benefits. While retirement systems set their estimated rate of return based on 20 or 30 years of projections, some an-

alysts predict the coming years won’t meet many systems’ expectations.

Several funds already have dropped their projections, including the $185 billion New York State and Local Retirement System, which lowered its assumed rate from 7.5 percent to 7 percent in September. Other major pension systems have said they’re considering it.

Illinois’ Teachers Retirement System reported a 4.6 percent return for the 2015 fiscal year. It will release preliminary returns for the fiscal year that ended June 30 on Friday, Urbanek said.

Illinois’ pension problems go back decades, however, due largely to state lawmakers voting for years to skip or short the annual payment. Illinois now has the worst-funded pensions of any state, with the accounts holding about 42 percent of what’s needed.

To cover benefits as promised and make up for years of missed payments and investment returns, Illinois’ contribution to its five pension funds this year will be about $7.8 billion – roughly one-fifth of its general revenue fund.

Republican state Senate leader Christine Radogno, a key Rauner ally, said she agreed the system should lower its rate when it did so in 2014, and it may need to do so again. But she took issue on Wednesday that the board could vote within minutes of receiving a briefing from its actuaries on Friday, and without discussing it with Rauner or legislative leaders. She said they were briefed in 2014.

“I just think that needs to happen again because of the impact on taxpayers,” said Radogno, who wants the board to delay its vote.

Urbanek said the board has historically taken the vote in August of every other year because of a deadline to provide the information to state budget officials.

The 13-person board includes six people elected by system members.

Muggy weather could yield bountiful harvest

ROCKFORD – Crop experts said the recent heat and humidity that has hit Illinois is ideal for the state’s soybean and corn crops.

Chicago Board of Education OKs $5.4B budget amid protests

CHICAGO – The Chicago Board of Education unanimously approved a $5.4 billion budget Wednesday that relies on increased property taxes and additional state funding that is far from certain.

The vote by Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s hand-picked school board followed protests by teachers and parents in the nation’s third-largest school district who say the plan calls for too many layoffs and cuts.

Advocacy groups also have expressed concern that the budget calls for additional borrowing for a cash-strapped district that has seen its credit rating slashed to “junk” status has borrowed to pay day-to-day bills.

The Civic Federation, a business-backed watchdog, says the school board must account for how it would close a funding gap if state lawmakers never approve $215 million to help cover the cost of teacher pensions.

CHICAGO – Federal agents have joined Chicago police and fire investigators in trying to determine the cause of a suspicious fire that killed four, including three children.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office said Wednesday the youngest victim, 3-month-old Melanie Watson, died of injuries suffered when her father leaped with her from their burning thirdfloor apartment. Her death was ruled a homicide.

Officials said the autopsies of the two other children, ages 7 and 4, are complete but results are being withheld pending formal identification.

The death of the fourth victim, 56-yearold Kirk Johnson, was also ruled a homicide.

Officials said Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents joined the investigation after findings thought to pinpoint the cause of the blaze were inconclusive.

Chicago police said they’re questioning a person of interest.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Astronaut Jeffrey Williams has a new record for NASA under his space belt.

The commander of the International Space Station marked a U.S. recording-breaking 521st day in orbit Wednesday, a number accumulated over four flights. That surpasses the 520day record set by Scott Kelly, whose one-year space station mission ended in March.

By the time Williams returns to Earth in two weeks to close out his latest half-year trip, he will have logged 534 days off the planet for NASA.

Yellowstone tourists face detour because of fire

Some tourists heading to Yellowstone National Park during the busy summer season were facing an hourlong detour Wednesday as a wildfire in neighboring Grand Teton National Park kept a highway closed.

Major tourist areas in both parks are open as the National Park Service holds events to celebrate its 100th anniversary this week.

A route leading into Yellowstone’s South Entrance was shut down, so visitors coming from the south through Wyoming had to take a detour into Idaho. But

firefighters hope cooler weather slows the flames over the next couple of days.

Judge delays sentencing in foiled bomb plot

WICHITA, Kan. – A federal judge delayed a sentencing decision Wednesday for a Kansas man who admitted aiding a wannabe Islamic State jihadist’s plan to detonate what they thought was a bomb at Fort Riley.

Alexander Blair has admitted his role in a foiled plan to kill or maim as many U.S. service members as possible at the Kansas military post. Blair has said that “nobody is perfect” and blames a genetic disorder for allowing others to take advantage of him.

U.S. District Judge Daniel Crabtree is weighing that and other factors as he calculates how much prison time, if any, the 29-year-old Topeka man should serve. But after hearing testimony from a psychologist Wednesday, the judge concluded he wanted some time to go over the material before handing down a sentence, the U.S. attorney’s office said.

No new sentencing date was immediately set.

Blair pleaded guilty in May to a conspiracy count that carries up to five years’ imprisonment.

Clinton maintaining stay-the-course strategy on foundation, emails

WASHINGTON – Hillary Clinton is sidestepping new questions about nearly 15,000 recently discovered emails or her family’s charitable foundation – a stay-the-course strategy sure to be tested in the sprint to Election Day. Clinton has no immediate plans – in an interview or a news conference – to explain the FBI’s discovery of another batch of emails or personally clarify how her administration would wall off the organization founded by her husband, former President Bill Clinton, if she’s elected president.

Instead, her top campaign officials and allies are playing defense, arguing that the foundation has helped millions of people around the globe while Trump’s business interests carry their own blind spots.

“Hillary Clinton doesn’t have a conflict of interest on charitable work – that’s all it is,” Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook said in an interview Wednesday with MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “We need to look a lot more closely at Donald Trump.”

The Clinton campaign figures her late-summer advantage gives her few incentives to personally push back against the email criticism or allegations of pay-for-play.

Trump, helped by a revamped campaign team, has called for a special prosecutor to investigate the foundation and said it should be shut down immediately. The Republican nominee, who donated to the Clinton Foundation, has repeatedly charged that his opponent, while secretary of state, provided access to foundation contributors in exchange for donations to the charity at the heart of Bill Clinton’s post-presidential legacy.

Clinton leads Trump in national and state polls, leaving many of her aides and supporters to conclude that addressing the issue isn’t worth the risk to her electoral standing. But the issue is one that ties into voters larger questions about her trustworthiness – a problem that will follow her into the White House should she win.

Traveling in California, the Democratic nominee has kept out of the public eye for days, spending most of her time wooing celebrities, financial titans and technology moguls at private fundraisers. On Tuesday alone, she raised more than $6.2 million at four events in Southern California and the Bay Area.

Her last full-blown news conference was December 2015 in Iowa, more than 260 days. But the questions about emails and the foundation keep piling up, and she is certain to be chal-

On Monday, the State Department said it was reviewing nearly 15,000 previously undisclosed emails recovered as part of the FBI inquiry, which was closed after investigators recommended against criminal charges.

On Tuesday, an Associated Press report found at least 85 people from private interests who met with or had phone conversations scheduled with Clinton while she led the State Department donated to the Clinton foundation.

Combined, the donors contributed as much as $156 million to the charity.

Pushing back, Clinton spokesman Brian Fallon said the AP report relied on “pretty flawed methodology” and said in an interview with MSNBC on Wednesday that Clinton was being held to a different standard than other politicians with charitable work.

“It is only now because she is running for president that the work of the Clinton foundation is being tarred,” Fallon said. “If any American voter is troubled by the idea that the Clintons want to continue working to solve the AIDS crisis on the side while Hillary Clinton is president, then don’t vote for her.”

The former secretary of state addressed questions about her use of a private server only in passing this week, joking with late night talk show Jimmy Kimmel on Monday that, “My emails are so boring,” she said. “We’ve already released, I don’t know, 30,000 plus, so what’s a few more?”

Turkish tanks are stationed Wednesday near the border with Syria in Karkamis, Turkey.

Turkey’s military launched an operation before dawn Wednesday to clear a Syrian border town of Islamic State militants, and a private Turkish TV station reported that a small number of Turkish special forces crossed into Syria as part of the operation.

First, it marks Turkey’s most overt incursion into Syria. It also put Turkey on a path toward potential confrontation with Kurdish fighters in Syria who the United States is supporting in their fight against Islamic State militants and have been the most effective force battling IS in northern Syria.

U.S. officials were aware of a Turkish fear that a group of those U.S.-backed Kurdish forces, fighting as members of the Syrian Democratic Forces, might

be preparing for a “jail break” from their American advisers to the Turkish border, according to a senior administration official traveling with Vice President Joe Biden, who was visiting Ankara on Tuesday.

A few days ago the Turks fired artillery across the border as warnings to the Kurdish fighters. “That’s a big problem” because the U.S. does not want a direct clash between the Turks and the Kurds, the U.S. official said, speaking

WASHINGTON – The U.S. military picture in Syria is getting more chaotic and complicated by the day, putting new strains on the Obama administration’s strategy of partnering with a hodgepodge of local fighters against the Islamic State group without getting pulled deeper into Syria’s civil war or rupturing relations with Turkey.

Developments in recent weeks illustrate the fine balance the U.S. is trying to strike. For example, the Pentagon may get drawn into cooperating with Russian forces in Syria even though it believes Moscow’s military intervention has only undermined the U.S. goal of defeating IS. And just last week the U.S. was compelled to respond when Syrian warplanes struck in an area not far from where U.S. troops were operating on the ground.

Adding to the volatile mix Tuesday, Turkish forces allied with Syrian Arab rebels and backed by U.S. air power pushed into Syria to retake Jarablus, a border town held by the Islamic State.

In addition to helping with intelligence and aerial surveillance, the U.S. conducted airstrikes with A-10 and F-16 planes.

This is significant on several levels.

Biden told reporters that the U.S. backed Turkey’s demand for limits on Kurdish expansion. He said Kurdish forces “must move back. They cannot, will not, under any circumstance get American support if they do not keep that commitment.”

Turkey is particularly sensitive to Kurdish advances in northern Syria because the Turks have a long-running fight against Kurdish insurgents on their side of the border. That is why Turkey has been upset with U.S. empowerment of a Kurdish militia known as the YPG, whom the Turks consider to be terrorists. They are the predominant element in the umbrella group the U.S. has created and called the Syrian Democratic Forces.

The U.S.-Turkish relationship has been under severe strain since a failed military coup in July. Turkey accuses a U.S.-based Muslim cleric, Fethullah Gulen, of masterminding the attempted putsch. Gulen has denied any involvement, but Turkey has demanded his extradition from the U.S. In addition to being a longtime U.S. ally in NATO, Turkey has allowed the U.S. to fly attack missions against IS from Incirlik air base in southern Turkey.

We should change the payout formula for video gambling revenue Here’s a way to cut down on the number of video gambling parlors operating in Illinois: change the revenue split prescribed by state law.

That’s a more effective way of changing the business model than, as has been talked about in the city of DeKalb, putting a cap on the number of video gambling licenses issued.

We understand the desire. We think that these gambling ventures don’t serve much purpose other than to separate people from their money. We opposed the state law that legalized these gambling machines and established the revenue-sharing formula that has made them so attractive.

However, the people who would benefit most from a cap on video gambling licenses in the city of DeKalb likely would be … people who already hold video gambling licenses in DeKalb.

When government artificially restricts the ability to provide a certain good or service through licensing quotas, the value of those licenses automatically increases. Take New York City’s taxi medallions, which are now worth in some cases more than $1 million apiece. In Wisconsin, licenses for tavern businesses are limited by a quota system. A key backer of that law: The Tavern League.

New York put its medallion system into place in the 1930s because it had more cab drivers than available passengers, causing safety and other issues in an industry that verges on a public utility there.

It’s clear from the continued interest in obtaining video gambling licenses that DeKalb is not in such a position now.

It bears noting that state law requires any gambling establishment to also possess a liquor license, but we have heard no talk of the city choosing to limit the number of liquor licenses it will issue.

So long as the city is fielding new applications for liquor licenses and video gambling, it should not artificially cap them and create a small group of “winners” (those who got their gambling licenses early) and “losers” (the people who have yet to apply).

The number of these gambling parlors could more easily be winnowed by changing the state formula that determines who gets how much of the proceeds. The law as written allows the company operating the terminals and the owner of the establishment where they are located to split 70 percent of the “net terminal income” from their machines. State and local governments take the remaning 30 percent.

This has proven so lucrative that businesses are opening merely to operate these machines. They seek liquor licenses mostly to satisfy the requirement in state law that they have one, although we’re sure that patrons like to enjoy a beverage while they play.

Changing the law, perhaps incrementally, to an eventual profit split where 60 or 70 percent of the revenue went to the state and the rest went to the terminal operator and the establishment would change the dynamic.

The machines could still generate cash to help businesses’ bottom lines, but no longer would be so attractive as an establishment’s raison d’etre.

Zika virus is now here in the states Ground zero for the Zika virus in the United States is now South Florida.

The virus, which can cause severe fetal birth defects and other neural disorders, is spreading in a 20-block area of Miami Beach and another section of Miami known as Wynwood. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a warning to pregnant women to avoid both areas and to people more generally to be aware of the risks.

Zika is a mosquito-borne virus that can also be transmitted through sex and blood.

Although the symptoms may be mild in most people, a new report suggests that it may also affect adult brain cells.

In the U.S. and its territories, chiefly Puerto Rico, there are now more than 10,000 reported cases of Zika, including 1,220 pregnant women with lab-confirmed infections. Many of these were brought into the U.S. by travelers, but local transmission is underway in Florida. The children of pregnant women who contract Zika may develop a severe form of brain damage called microcephaly, and in adults the virus may lead to Guillain-Barré syndrome.

For months, experts have not been shy about calling this a public-health emergency, which should be a clarion call to change behavior. For individuals, that means avoiding mosquitoes, and possibly postponing pregnancy. For Congress, it should mean providing the resources to combat the virus.

Local governments and public-health agencies are scrambling to control the spread, provide diagnostics, educate the public and search for a vaccine.

But instead of acting, Republican majorities in Congress have taken the emergency as another occasion to grandstand and squabble.

After President Barack Obama asked in February for nearly $1.9 billion in additional federal

funding to fight the virus, or about $5.80 per person in the U.S., a partisan fight broke out on Capitol Hill that stalled legislation.

Republicans delayed, then approved a far smaller amount with conditions they knew Democrats would not accept. Then Congress went on its long summer recess. Without the new money, the administration has been reprogramming existing funds intended for other vital public-health purposes.

The delays on Capitol Hill are evidence of deep dysfunction. Could not a Congress that annually votes $580 billion a year for defense, and more than $40 billion for homeland security, approve a small fraction of those sums for the health and welfare of thousands of pregnant women and their babies? Isn’t health security part of national security?

The money will be particularly important for vaccine development, which requires clinical trials that can be costly and take time. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases this month launched a Phase 1 clinical trial on an experimental DNA vaccine; the results are expected in January and, if all goes well, a Phase 2 trial in Zika-endemic countries could begin next year.

D.A. Henderson, who led the successful drive to eliminate smallpox, and who died last week, attributed his success to the development of a stable, freeze-dried vaccine that could be easily administered, and a strategy of focusing vaccinations in a ring around an outbreak, rather than a more expansive mass vaccination. His innovative thinking and determination saved millions of lives. His legacy ought to inspire researchers now racing to develop a Zika vaccine. And Congress ought to be embarrassed for starving the Zika budget in a purely political tiff.

Yes, I know: Most people have photo identification and use it in lots of places, and they’ll argue that even if this kind of fraud is rare, there’s no harm done by asking voters to show a driver’s license or other acceptable card. Yet quite a few people do not have the forms of identification required in these Republican-backed laws. And those who don’t strongly tend to be African-Americans or others who have, over the years, been victims of discrimination at the ballot box.

Republicans who have pushed the tighter laws know exactly what they will do – reduce black and Latino voting – as a U.S. Court of Appeals found in a recent North Carolina case. No court that has looked into it has discovered any factual record of in-person voter impersonation fraud.

Just as it would be appalling – and illegal – to have shorter voting hours in black precincts than in white precincts, it’s appalling and illegal to figure out anything that will make voting more difficult for one group and enact such measures.

Meanwhile, unsubstantiated accusations of crooked elections – claims both parties have been known to foment, but which Trump has made a rallying cry – are dangerous in themselves, as Brendan Nyhan explained at the Upshot.

If you’re sincerely worried about election fraud, then focus on absentee voting. And if you’re sincerely worried about the future of democracy, you know that low voter participation, not voter chicanery, is the real threat.

Welfare reform, the great bipartisan success story Welfare reform may be the last great bipartisan success story. It wasenacted in 1996 by a Republican Congress led by Newt Gingrich and by Democratic President Bill Clinton in response to decades of public frustration with the U.S. system of aid to the poor. At the time, the law had liberal enemies, some of whom resigned from Clinton’s administration in protest of his signing it.

Those enemies have grown in number in recent years. In part that’s because the Democratic Party has moved leftward generally and decided that past compromises can now be revisited.

Liberals have also grown more and more convinced over time that welfare reform was a material disaster for the poorest among us and therefore a moral disaster for the nation as a whole. For their side, many conservatives have pronounced the system a failure as well, claiming that its safety-net features have done little to affect poverty rates.

The good news is that claims on both sides are almost certainly wrong. Scott Winship, a careful researcher at the conservative Manhattan Institute, has a new report arguing that welfare reform deserves to be remembered fondly.

Winship concludes that child poverty has fallen since its enactment and is now at an all-time low. He finds similar trends for households in “deep poverty,” defined as having less than half the income that puts you at the poverty line.

His most provocative claim concerns “extreme poverty,” defined as having less than $2 a day to live on.

A 2015 book by sociologists Kathryn Edin and Luke Schaefer reinforced liberal opinion against welfare reform by arguing that it had led to a sharp increase in the percentage of children living in such a condition. Not only does Winship provide data denying that this increase has occurred: He finds that practically no children in the U.S. live in such extreme poverty, or did so at the time welfare was reformed.

The Census Bureau’s official measurements, it is true, show only modest improvement in child poverty since 1996. Winship argues that a more accurate measure of

trends should take account of noncash benefits that poor households receive, such as food stamps. We should also place some economic value on these households’ healthcare benefits. He makes a strong case that the inflation measures of the Congressional Budget Office and the Federal Reserve are superior to the one used by the Census Bureau. Because the Census Bureau overstates inflation, it understates improvements in poor people’s purchasing power.

When he adjusts the data in these and other ways, Winship finds that 13.1 percent of children lived in poverty in 1996 while 7.8 percent did in 2014 (the most recent year with available data).

The families that Edin and Schaefer profiled are living in harrowing conditions, as Winship acknowledges. But he provides evidence that very few households have to get by on less than $2 a day.

It’s a situation so rare as to make it impossible to determine reliably whether it has grown more or less prevalent, let alone whether welfare reform caused whatever change occurred.

Winship notes that the deep-poverty trends – again, that’s for households at half the poverty line – improved more for children of single mothers than for other

groups. Since welfare reform disproportionately affected children in single-mother households, that pattern adds to the evidence that the law did not cause deep poverty to rise – and makes it less plausible that welfare reform caused extreme poverty to rise.

While the paper undermines the liberal conventional wisdom on welfare, it also casts doubt on some conservative talking points.

Many on the right like to say that we had a war on poverty, and poverty won.

Winship’s data suggests that poverty would have been significantly worse without the safety net.

Winship also stresses that welfare reform was enacted alongside an expansion of the earned-income tax credit, which made work pay more for many households.

There is certainly room to argue that we should be doing more to fight poverty in America and doing a better job of allocating public resources. But Winship’s paper makes a powerful argument that to do so, we should build on the success of welfare reform rather than try to reverse it.

When he talks about “rigged” elections and calls for voter-identification laws to prevent fraud, Donald Trump is squarely within the Republican mainstream. The party has made passing those laws one of its highest priorities in state after state.

Yet as the evidence continues to show, the type of fraud that voter ID laws could prevent is basically non-existent.

Now there’s more documentation of this. News21, a nonpartisan investigative-journalism education project, studied cases from 2012 to 2016 in Texas, Georgia, Arizona, Kansas and Ohio – all states where Republicans have complained about fraud. It found hundreds of allegations. But most turned out to be spurious. There were few prosecutions and a total of only 38

convictions.

When fraud is found – yes, there is election fraud in the U.S. – it almost never involves in-person voter impersonation. As election-law expert Rick Hasen has noted, the weak point in the system is the potential for fraud in absentee ballots, a problem voter ID wouldn’t prevent.

Similarly, voter ID is irrelevant when the cases involve corrupt election officials, who are rare but certainly exist.

Only four of the 15 convictions in Texas were of voters, News21 found.

And even in instances when people try to cast ballots more than once, they are often beyond the scope of voter ID laws. For example, an Arizona resident voted both in that state and in Michigan, leading to a 2015 prosecution. But she was registered in both states; the problem she (and a handful of others) exploited is that no national

WATERMAN – The Indian Creek soccer team lost to the Woodstock Blue Streaks 7-1 on Wednesday night.

The Timberwolves (0-2) were simply outmatched by Woodstock, a school roughly five times larger than them. However, Timberwolves coach Eric Schrader was able to find a few positives from the game.

“We got to play a really good Woodstock team and we got to see what they do well,” Schrader said. “The things they do well are things that we need to work on.

They were really good at passing and spacing.”

Schrader also had kind words for his rookie junior goaltender, Michael Hill.

“He’s made some really good progress. I wouldn’t say that he was clueless coming in because I could tell when he showed up the first day that he had a lot of po-

tential. He has been working on it since later in the summer. He wasn’t supposed to be our starting keeper coming into this season. Our keeper broke his collarbone. He was kind of our backup plan but now, he’s turned out to be a good backup plan. He played really well Monday, too (a 3-2 loss to Streator).”

Hill, who is also a basketball player at Indian Creek, came out for the team because he heard that they were short on manpower. Hill praised his teammates for the help that they’ve given him during his journey in becoming a goaltender this summer.

“The callouts have been tough,” Hill said. “I don’t know a whole lot about soccer so guys who are more experienced help position me and are teaching me how to read angles during play.

Everyone’s been there for me.

ERA leader Hendricks pitches Cubs past Padres

The Associated Press SAN DIEGO – Kyle Hendricks has another weapon, although it’s not a pitch.

It was on display when the Cubs beat the San Diego Padres, 6-3, to complete a three-game sweep on Wednesday.

“It’s confidence,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “The biggest thing from last year to this year is the confidence thing. I think he believes he is one of the best right now.”

Hendricks, the major league ERA leader, pitched six effective innings to pace the Cubs.

“Maybe he wasn’t as sharp as usual, but he was really good,” Maddon said.

Hendricks (12-7) gave up two runs and four hits, striking out eight and leaving with a 2.19 ERA. He has allowed no more than three earned runs in 17 straight starts.

Over that span, Hendricks has pitched to a 1.70 ERA. “Today I had some bad at the beginning and some good at the end,” he said. “I had both ends of the spectrum there.

“At the beginning my command was a little off. I finally started getting the ball down and found the movement on my two-seamer and started spotting that better. I was one roll from there.”

Three Cubs relievers took over for the NL Central leaders, with Aroldis Chapman pitching the ninth for his 29th save in 32 chances.

Willson Contreras homered and Ben Zobrist drove in two runs as the Cubs won for the 22nd time in 27 games. At 81-45, they are 36 games over .500 for the first time since ending the 1945 season at 98-56.

“That was really loud,” Maddon

said of Contreras’ blast. “You knew that was a home run when he hit it.”

The Padres have dropped nine of their past 12. Paul Clemens (2-3) took the loss.

“Some guys have lanes you can pitch through, some hitters have small little holes. Kris Bryant has small holes.”

Zobrist then hit a two-run triple and scored on Soler’s sacrifice fly.

“That’s been the story of the last two outings, that first inning,” Clemens said. “Maybe I just got to wind myself up more in the bullpen.”

Maddon said jumping ahead was a key.

“We came out nicely in the first inning and that gave us the edge,” he said. “And Kyle ran with it from there.”

CHICAGO – Tommy Joseph and Cesar Hernandez homered to back Jerod Eickhoff, and the struggling Philadelphia Phillies beat the White Sox, 5-3, on Wednesday night.

Philadelphia showed some spark at the plate and on the mound after getting outscored a combined 18-1 over the previous two games against St. Louis and the Sox. The Phillies came away with the win after dropping five of seven and salvaged a twogame split in their first trip to Chicago’s South Side since 2004.

Joseph and Hernandez both had

two hits and went deep against James Shields (5-16). Aaron Altherr added two RBI singles.

Eickhoff (9-12) did his part, allowing two runs and four hits over six innings.

Jeanmar Gomez worked the ninth for his 34th save in 38 chances. He gave up an RBI single to Avisail Garcia before Dioner Navarro grounded out with runners on first and third to end the game.

The Sox announced hours before the game that their ballpark is getting a new name. U.S. Cellular Field will be called Guaranteed Rate Field starting in November under a 13-year deal with the mortgage company.

But while a major change is coming, things basically remained the same for a team with a losing record this year and one playoff appearance since winning the 2005 World Series.

Shields set a career high with his 16th loss.

The veteran right-hander gave up four runs and seven hits in six innings.

The home runs by Joseph and Hernandez brought his total to 31 this season and 22 since the Sox acquired him from San Diego on June 4.

Shields is 0-4 with a 13.95 ERA in five starts this month after posting a 1.78 ERA over five outings in July.

Cutler working with another shuffled O-line; Langford returns to practice

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Jay Cutler has gotten more accustomed than he would probably like working with different offensive linemen over the past few seasons. That made Wednesday’s practice no different, with his starting right side of Kyle Long and Bobby Massie both out.

“From last year we should be used to it,” Cutler said. “We had a lot of guys coming in and out. I think through training camp we saw a lot of different faces coming in and out of the huddle. So I think the comfort level kind of grew a lot with a lot of guys.

It’ll be a test. It’s preseason. It’s a good time to do these things.”

With Long out, it was another day of work for Cornelius Edison at the center position. It could mean for the second year in a row, Cutler will at some point take snaps in a game from a center in his NFL debut.

“He’s a good kid. He’s trying to do everything we ask him to do,” Cutler said of Edison.” … “I think Ted [Larsen]’s been helping him a lot. I think he’s come a long way just in these last two days.”

Cutler said Wednesday’s practice was Edison’s best since taking over the role with the first team, and that he’s being vocal with the first-year player out of Portland State.

Long is normally the vocal player in that huddle, and Cutler didn’t mince words about what it means for

the O-line to be without its best player.

“You’re missing that big guy that can lock down the three-technique,” he said. “Whenever he’s in there, you know that side is pretty much going to be void. You don’t really have to worry about that. You’re going to have room to step up. He’s been a three-time Pro Bowler. He’s a heck of player for good reason. We’ll miss him this week, and hopefully we’ll get him back soon.”

Despite all the shuffling, a positive on the O-line is second-round pick Cody Whitehair, who has been entrenched as the starting left guard since minicamp.

“He’s done well. He’s a smart kid,” Cutler said. “He’s quiet, he kind of fits in with that group and he’s doing

exactly what we ask him to do. He’s really talented. You can see some stuff he does, the way he passes things off, it comes natural to him.”

John Fox lauded Whitehair for his football IQ. “How fast he’s adapted to the pro game has been pretty impressive,” Fox said.

Injury/illness update: Jeremy Langford returned from his foot injury and was limited. Danny Trevathan (hamstring) also participated in a limited fashion. Massie and Deiondre’ Hall missed practice with illnesses, and Leonard Floyd was held out with a leg injury. Jonathan Bullard was again excused for personal reasons, but Fox expects him back at practice Thursday.

Senior-heavy Spartans looking to not miss a beat

ecarifio@shamwedia.com SYCAMORE – Only four starters return on each side of the ball for the Sycamore football team.

But don’t confuse coach Joe Ryan’s senior-laden bunch as inexperienced.

“If you’re doing things right in your program, that’s what you do,” Ryan said. “Juniors who become seniors then turn to make their niche in the world – as far as football goes, I guess – and then you just keep moving on. It makes it a lot easier when you return a lot of guys, but then there’s some years you’re young. You just always hope to have experience playing, and you always get the most out of seniors.”

Although not a lot of starters are back, the starting lineup is loaded with seniors. Ty Sulaver – who started some last year when Brett Bemis was injured – will take over as quarterback. Ryan said that Bemis has improved dramatically from last year under center.

“You talk about it a lot of the time, how the game’s slowing down for him at the quarterback position.” Ryan said. “He’s more patient in the pocket as a passer and is much more patient as a runner. It just shows experience.”

Sulaver was a starter at safety for the Spartans last year, and Ryan said he may go both ways again this year.

“You don’t want to get caught with a guy who needs

to be in there on the sideline because you say ‘Well...’ ” Ryan said. “If he needs to go, he needs to go. If we need him back there he is going to go. ...

Hopefully the other guys can raise their level so maybe we don’t have to, but certainly we’re not going to be afraid to.”

The Spartans made the playoffs for the seventh straight year last year, finishing, 6-4, after losing in the first round of the playoffs for the first time since 2007.

Senior linebacker Jake Peloquin, who will be in the middle of the Spartans defense, said the team is hoping to improve off the past two seasons – a 7-5 mark in 2014 and a 6-4 showing last year.

“I think our hopes are really high this year, as they are every year,” Peloquin said. “But if we work really hard, we can achieve them.”

Senior Gareth Bond is in the middle of the Sycamore offensive line this year, leading the way for another returning starter, running back Chris Pawola. Now a senior, Bond ran for 703 yards on 147 carries in the regular season for the Spartans.

“We know that we have big games ahead of us and a tough schedule, but we’re playing against guys that can do the same thing,” Bond said. “We’re as capable to go to state as any other year.”

After opening the season with games against playoff teams in their first four games, the Spartans close the season with three games against teams with losing records – although no one on their schedule won fewer than three games.

“You don’t look at anybody our schedule and say ‘That’s one we got,’ ” Ryan said. “We better be good every week. When we started to turn things around here eight or nine years ago, that’s the philosophy we took.”

iffany became a teen icon and rose to pop stardom with her 1987 cover of “I Think We’re Alone Now,” originally recorded in 1967 by Tommy James and the Shondells. Her new album “A Million Miles” debuted March 31.

Tiffany will perform from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Corn Fest in DeKalb. Admission to the fest is free, but there is a $5 charge for admission to the sound stage.

Tiffany spoke to Shaw Media reporter Katrina Milton to discuss her “A Million Miles” tour, her passion for music and her upcoming performance at Corn Fest.

Milton: What have you been up to lately?

Tiffany: I have continued to do pop-based albums

through the years. I’m a musician through and through. I started at 9 and was influenced by country music. I’ve been in the music industry for more than 30 years. Now I’m a mom and wife. I’ve been real lucky. I’ve had the store [Tiffany’s Boutique in Nashville], songwriting, and I’ve been growing behind the scenes when I’m not touring. For five years, I have co-produced CDs. I live in Nashville, Tennessee. I still want to learn and inspire. It’s important to still be that person.

Milton: Tell me more about your current tour.

Tiffany: I’ve been taking things to the next level. I

co-manage myself and I have my own management company. I play at retro festivals, and I just returned from six weeks in England, playing for 20,000 to 25,000 people. I will have dynamic acoustic performances through February, from big concerts to tiny theaters.

Milton: Tell me about your “A Million Miles” album?

Tiffany: It’s the adult contemporary genre, pop

music. I put my heart into all my music, but this might be my favorite, because of the people involved and the stories I’m telling. It’s about my experiences: growing, finding yourself, losing family and friends.

Life can be very painful, and we all have to deal with that. The songs are very honest and real. There are also jamming songs, songs that make you feel that you have no cares in the world. As a vocalist, it allowed me to expand my voice and show my capabilities.

Milton: How are your new music and shows different?

Tiffany: I reworked the songs, and I worked hard

on production and rehearsals. I wanted to highlight the songs the way fans remember it. I have a band, and we have some wacky ideas, but we make it work. I think that I really shine as a live performer on stage. There’s nothing like being on stage, reacting to the crowd. It’s spontaneous. The smallest I’ve ever played for is about 200 people, and it’s intimate, like in a living room. I’ve also played for 60,000-people festivals. Those have huge energy, and it’s not

Milton: What do you like about your current music?

Tiffany: It’s fresh, a different style of show. I have

great band members. When you’re loving what you do, you never get burnt out. My fans allowed me to take years off, and now I’m a mom and wife. I have eight dogs, I do yoga, I rejuvenate. I toured a lot when I was young, and now I can settle into life. I’m always ready to go out there. It never gets boring, and I can be comfortable on stage.

Milton: Has being a songwriter changed your music?

Tiffany: “I Think We’re Alone Now” will always

be a part of me, as will all of those ballads. I still love them and sing them today. It has set a high bar for me as a songwriter. The biggest and best compliment is when people tell me, “During a hard time, your music spoke to me. The lyrics were exactly what I was feeling, raw, true and honest.” I like helping them heal, knowing that I’m not the only person that feels that way. It makes me feel not so alone as well.

Milton: How will your show in DeKalb be different?

Tiffany: Well, it will be an acoustic show with a

lot of tricks up our sleeve. It will be high energy. A few songs won’t be on any other shows. It will be tailor-made. I’m excited. People can request things.

My band wears many hats and are open-minded. It will be awesome. We’ll really rock it out.

Glidden Homestead hosts Art at the Barn DAILY CHRONICLE Whether you’re looking for that perfect art piece or just looking, don’t miss Art at the Barn on the grounds of the Joseph F. Glidden Homestead and Historical Center on Sunday, Aug. 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission to the art show is free.

From noon to 4 p.m. the same day, as part of the Homestead’s 2016 season, “Digging Up the Past,” visitors can tour the Joseph Glidden Home where barbed wire was invented, see a working blacksmith shop, and visit the 1870s brick barn being excavated by archaeologists.

Glidden developed barbed wire in DeKalb in 1873 and went on to patent numerous other inventions.

at the Homestead site through the winter of 1873 into the spring of 1874, when the operation moved into town.

‘Arabesque’ on display at The Art Box

The Art Box will in DeKalb host “Arabesque,” an exhibition of short suites by local artists who will display whimsical art typically unseen during the course of day-to-day frame shop production and solo exhibitions.

The exhibition will run from Saturday to Oct. 6.

The Kishwaukee Concert Band will resume rehearsals for its Oct. 23 concert on Aug. 31, in the Band Room at Huntley Middle School, 1515 S. Fourth St. in DeKalb.

Attendees should use the north parking lot off Barb Boulevard and enter through Door 32. The downbeat is at 7:15 p.m.

This is the 15th season for the all-volunteer band, which is made up of people older than 18 who have played a wind or percussion instrument in the past and enjoy playing. No auditions are necessary. Clarinets, trumpets and tubas are needed.

The directors for this season will be Dave Lehman and Deb Shofner. They will present a wide variety of music for each concert.

This is a good way to expand musical knowledge, have fun, and meet new people.

KC sets auditions for ‘Love Letters’

Auditions for Kishwaukee College’s fall production of “Love Letters,” by A. R. Gurney, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 14 and 15 in the Kishwaukee College Theatre (B1205).

Copies of the script are on reserve at the Kishwaukee College Library. Anyone interested in auditioning is required to read the script prior to auditioning.

The production will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9 through Nov. 12 in the Kishwaukee College Theatre.

“Love Letters” revolves around a 50-year relationship between Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III told exclusively by letters written to each other, beginning in childhood. The play’s seeming simplicity belies the power and emotion it conveys as Melissa and Andrew move forward through their lives, as the impact each age and experience has on the evolution of their relationship is revealed.

“Love Letters” was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 1990. A.R. Gurney is one of the most produced playwrights in the U.S. and is best known for works that examine the American middle class.

He has received the Drama Desk Award, Rockefeller Award, and two Lucille Lortel Awards for his works.

began military service. That’s important because exercise helps to reduce weight, and lower weight helps to protect against diabetes. This study shows exercise in teenagers – both aerobic exercise and strength training – reduces the risk of diabetes in later life, even if the exercise hasn’t led them to achieve a healthy weight.

Aerobic exercise and strength training cause several different chemical changes in muscle. These changes cause muscle to extract sugar from the blood more efficiently. That, in turn, lowers blood sugar levels. Regular exercise also decreases the size and number of fat cells. This leads to hormonal changes that reduce the risk of developing diabetes.

A weakness of this study is it did not measure again, later in life, the aerobic capacity and muscle strength of these young men. It theoretically is possible the ones who exercised the most as teens continued to exercise the most as older adults.

In other words, maybe the exercise when they were teens didn’t protect them, only the exercise later in life. That’s possible, but I think it’s more likely regular exercise in teenage and young adult years protects against diabetes many years later.

I hope that’s the ammunition you need.

It should be – if your son is a rational teenager. But I know rational teens sometimes can be hard to find.

Dear Dr. K: My teenage son doesn’t like sports or exercise. Diabetes runs in our family. You say exercise protects against diabetes and is valuable even in young adults. Can you give me some ammunition to convince my teenager to exercise?

Dear Reader: Perfect timing: A new study has been published that provides an answer. Most studies of exercise have been in adults, often older adults. Until this recent study, there wasn’t a lot of information about teenagers.

The new study looked at 1.5 million teenage men enlisted in the military in Sweden between the years 1969 and 1997. None had diabetes at the time they entered the military. Because military service is required in Sweden, these young men included more than 97 percent of all Swedish men aged 18.

Health records were available for all the men, for up to the next 40 years.

At the time they entered military service, their aerobic capacity, a reflection of the amount of aerobic exercise, was measured. So was their muscle strength, a reflection of the amount of strength or resistance training. Medical records over the next several decades also identified which of the young men developed diabetes (the common type, called Type 2 or “adult-onset” diabetes).

The research team then could compare the young men who were the least fit to those who were the most fit, with regard to the rate with which they developed Type 2 diabetes many decades later. Those who were the least fit (both in terms of aerobic capacity and muscle strength) were more than three times more likely later to develop diabetes.

This connection between fitness and reduced risk of diabetes was true regardless of how much the teens weighed when they

Sometimes, though, declarer needs a favorable split, but must still play carefully. In today’s deal, South is in four hearts. West leads the spade king and continues the suit when East encourages with his eight. How should declarer continue?

North’s three-club rebid was a double negative, showing a very bad hand. His three hearts was nonforcing. But South did not want to stop short of game and continued with four clubs just in case partner had considerable length there.

South starts with three top losers: one spade, one heart and one diamond. So, if trumps are 4-1, the contract has no chance. However, he should also count winners. Here, he has four hearts, two diamonds and three clubs. If diamonds are 3-3, that will permit an extra winner to be established, but that is against the odds. So, what can declarer do if hearts are 3-2 and diamonds are 4-2?

South must arrange to trump his last diamond on the board.

After ruffing the second spade, he can afford to cash one top heart, but not two (otherwise, West will remove dummy’s final trump when in with the diamond ace). Then declarer drives out the diamond ace, ruffs the third spade, cashes his second high heart, and returns to diamonds. West may trump the third, but then South can ruff his low diamond on the board.
