DeKalb Corn Fest has road closures planned SUBMITTED REPORT Some downtown DeKalb roads will close at 4 p.m. Thursday in preparation for Corn Fest, which runs Friday through Sunday.

The carnival will be located in the Ellwood and Haish city lots, which are located between Oak and Locust streets off Second and Third Street.

The carnival also will be in the parking lots of Finch Funeral Home, DeKalb Public Library and Frontier Communications.

The parking lots will close at 6 p.m. Tuesday and will remain closed until 7 a.m. Aug. 29 for carnival set-up and take-down.

Closures for 4 p.m. Thursday are as follows: • Lincoln Highway between First and Fourth streets • Second and Third streets from the railroad tracks to Oak Street • Locust Street between Second and Fourth streets.

The Embrey parking lot, behind the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce, between

First and Second streets will close at 5 p.m.

Thursday.

A limited number of parking spaces will be available for customers of Barb City Bagels.

The street parking on Locust Street between First and Fourth streets will close at 9 p.m. Thursday.

Traffic from First State Bank will be allowed to exit onto Third Street until the bank closes at noon Aug. 29.

Bank traffic will be directed to Locust Street and over to Fourth Street. Locust Street will close completely from noon Saturday until 9 p.m. Sunday.

There will be signs posted by the City of DeKalb in advance as a reminder. Any vehicles in violation will be towed at the owner’s expense.

The city lots at Fourth and Grove and at Second and Grove streets will remain open throughout the festival.

There will also be street parking available on Locust Street on the east side of Fourth Street.

Samba, reflections and pride in final Rio Olympics party

RIO DE JANEIRO – Shaking to samba and expressing a sense of longing with uniquely Brazilian words, Olympians and fans said goodbye to the Rio Games with one last big bash that was both revelatory and a sigh of relief.

The closing ceremony Sunday celebrated the 16-day spectacle that was the Rio Games, which combined numerous highlights with ugly and even bizarre episodes that sometimes overshadowed competition. Cariocas – as Rio’s residents are known – weren’t swayed by the issues that led up to these Olympics, and braved rain and strong winds on the final night to cap their moment in the worldwide spotlight.

While South America’s first Olympics are over, safely and with a grandiose finale, many problems remain.

Still, Brazil showed Sunday it still definitely knows how to party.

“These were marvelous Olympic Games in the ‘marvelous city,’ ” International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said, playing off the “cidade maravilhosa” nickname of Brazil’s postcard city of inviting coastlines, year-round sun and lush tropical vegetation.

While the stadium erupted in applause at that declaration, a few minutes later there were boos of sadness when Bach announced: “I declare the Games of the XXXI Olympiad closed.”

The closing ceremony in iconic Maracana Stadium also was meant to take care of some business – formally signaling the transition to the 2020 Summer Olympics in Japan.

But Sunday’s party was all about Brazil, designed to be more low-key than the opening, which focused heavily on Rio. The ceremony featured original footage of Alberto Santos Dumont, the man that Brazilians recognize as the inventor of the airplane. The theme, “Brazilians can do with their bare hands,” was a nod to the emerging economy of the world’s fifth most populous nation.

Samba legend Martinho da Vila, whose tunes make their way into many popular telenovelas, sang “Carinhoso,” or “Affectionate.”

Olympians poured in under light rain, waving their flags while many shook their bodies to samba-infused pop that made the stadium feel like a Carnival parade. Britain’s athletes wore shoes with soles that lit up in changing colors of red, white and blue, while Tongan taekwondo athlete Pita Taufatofua danced onstage in a grass skirt as a DJ performed, reprising a moment that captured attention when he carried the flag for his country during the opening ceremony.

The show widened its lens to greater Brazil, a massive country with a land mass slightly larger than the continental United States. There was a tribute to cave paintings of some of the first inhabitants of the Americas, in Serra da Capivara, in Northeastern Brazil, today one of the nation’s poor-

est regions.

Spectators watched performers shake it to frevo, a frenetic dance that – if it’s even possible – makes high-octane samba seem like a staid ballroom affair. Holding small umbrellas, dancers jumped and marched while performing acrobatics.

They shook it to “Vassourinhas,” which means “small brooms,” a popular song that also was the name of a famous club in the northeastern city of Recife.

The show also built performances around “saudade,” which means anything from longing for someone to sadness to remembering good times. It is one of the most important words in Brazilian Portuguese. Lights flashed translations for the word in many languages, and a group of women sang “Mulher Rendeira,” or “Lace-making Woman,” a nod to the country’s African heritage. Brazil was the last country in the Americas to outlaw slavery, in 1888.

The games had many memorable

moments, both for Brazilian competitors at home and athletes from around the world.

Soccer-crazed Brazil got partial payback against Germany, winning gold two years after a 7-1 World Cup semifinal shellacking that left Brazilians fuming.

American gymnast Simone Biles asserted her dominance with four golds, swimmer Michael Phelps added five more to up his staggering total to 23 and the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, put on his usual show with three golds just days before turning 30 years old.

But there also were ugly episodes, such as American swimmer Ryan Lochte’s fabricated story about a harrowing robbery that was actually an intoxicated-fueled vandalism of a gas station bathroom, and bizarre issues such as Olympic diving pools going from crystal blue to gunky, algae green – at a time when Rio’s water quality in open waters is one of the biggest local environmental issues.

Ribs, Rhythm and Brews Fest attracts nearly four times as many participants as the previous year

Shaw Media correspondent SYCAMORE – Vendors for Ribs, Rhythm and Brews Fest learned from last year s success and ensured more than 8,000 people would not go hungry Saturday in Sycamore.

The annual festival, now in its second year, experienced a groundswell of participants – up from 2,000 last year. In addition to a rise in attendance, space was expanded into the city lot off Somonauk Street and two more ribs vendors competed for the title of Ribs Fest Champion.

BBQ and HyVee. The festival’s first year was met with higher than anticipated numbers, leading to a shortage of food, but that was not the case this year, said Rose Treml, the executive director of

the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce. ”We were completely unprepared last year, but we expanded. If we have to, we’ll expand again next year,” Teml said.

Catering took the title of Ribs Fest champion from Tom and Jerry’s Catering by Diann. The two vendors had been friendly rivals after last year’s competition.

“We’re all good with it,” said Diann Beaulieu of Catering by Diann.

“We’re all friends and we all enjoy it.”

Ribs, Rhythm and Brews attracted people from all walks of life, including Bob and Vicky Tanke of Sycamore, who came to try out the festivals vegetarian options and beer, which was provided by Forge Brewhouse.

“They have excellent coleslaw, excellent macaroni and cheese, excellent grass potatoes,” Vicky said.

Music, as the festival’s name implies, was as abundant as the food.

Johnny & The Boomers and Back Country Roads bands played throughout the night.

Vicky Tanke said that if she had to choose between ribs, music or beer, she would go with music.

“I’ve been trying to put into words what this is, but music just sustains people,” she said.

Dispute in street leads to shooting in DeKalb

eolson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – An early morning confrontation between a group of people blocking the street and occupants of a vehicle ended with a person being shot Sunday in the 100 block of John Street, police said.

Friends drove the wounded man to Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb.

His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, DeKalb Deputy Police Chief John Petragallo said.

Police were called at 2:15 a.m. to the area, when a 911 caller reported a large crowd blocking the street and a problem developing.

A subsequent call shortly after reported that the crowd had scattered after a shot was fired.

Police in the area when the shot was fired did not hear it, Petragallo said. However, while they were investigating the incident, they received a call from staff at Kishwaukee Hospital reporting that they had received a man with a gunshot wound, Petragallo said.

“As best we can figure, it was in the middle of Locust and Lincoln in the 100 block of John Street,” Petragallo said.

Officers from the DeKalb, as well as the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, Northern Illinois University police and the Illinois State Police assisted in the investigation, Petragallo said.

There were multiple parties on Saturday night into Sunday morning in the area, which is just across the

Kishwaukee River from the Northern Illinois University campus and is primarily rental housing for students and other tenants.

Witnesses told police that a vehicle traveling north on John became frustrated when people blocking the road refused to let them pass, Petragallo said.

“The horn started to honk on the vehicle, which created more interest from the group to the car, an argument ensued and then some of the folks from the group in the street started jumping on the vehicle,” Petragallo said. “It was at that point that one of the subjects in the vehicle displayed a handgun and fired a round.”

Upon learning there had been a shooting, police taped off the area and interviewed witnesses, Petragallo said. Although they have not found a shell casing, they have received good information from witnesses.

“Some people did see what happened,” Petragallo said. “We got several people who had a very consistent statement as to what they observed, and the victim was able to speak to us.”

The shooting suspect was riding in a dark-colored sedan with tinted windows, police said. The vehicle had not been located by police as of Sunday evening.

Donald Roy Hanson, 65, of DeKalb, Illinois, died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2016, at Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb.

Born May 3, 1951, in Mendota, Illinois, the son of Wilbur and Jean (Gittens) Hanson, Donald married Carla M. Knoll on Dec. 28, 2001, in Sycamore. Donald was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was employed by Virgil Cook and Son, Service Gas and Northern Illinois University. Donald was a member of the DeKalb Elks Club, The American Legion, a season pass holder at River Heights Golf Course, and a former member of the DeKalb Eagles Club.

He is survived by his wife, Carla; his brothers, Ed (Kate) Hanson, Willie (Sandy) Hanson, Steve (Virginia) Hanson, Jerry (Sally) Hanson and Joe (Laura) Hanson; his sisters, Sue (Chuck) Schoenholz, Kathy (Charlie) Mackin; sister-in-law, Renee (Jim) Voorheis; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Chuck and Dave Hanson.

The memorial service will be at 6 p.m.

Sandra R. Lang, 78, of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, passed away Friday, July 29, 2016, in Good Samaritan Rehabilitation Center.

She was born March 4, 1938, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Ivan and Kathryn (Henney) Rinehart and married Gerald Lang on Sept. 12, 1959.

A graduate of DeKalb Illinois High School, class of 1955, Sandra attended Purdue University, and Swedish American Hospital in Rockford, where she received her credentials in medical technology and proceeded to work for several health clinics in Wisconsin.

She enjoyed traveling, reading, playing mahjong, coordinating the weekly mahjong group for several years. Before moving to

The union wouldn’t release results of the teachers’ ratification vote.

ed to approve the new contract, 5-2, Saturday during an morning meeting at the school district’s Education Center. School board members spent more than an hour in closed session discussing the deal, before voting in open session.

The two “no” votes on the contract came from school board members Howard Solomon and Kerry Mellott.

The pair objected to several specific terms in the agreement, especially one where retiring teachers will continue to get a special raise in their last four years with the school district.

“I’m glad it passed, but at the same time, I can’t fully support some of the terms of the contract,” Mellott said.

He added that the raise at retirement “sends the wrong message” considering the state’s and school district’s fiscal situations.

An agreement didn’t seem imminent early on during the Aug. 12 negotiations, both sides indicated. But none of the representatives can point to any one event that led to the tentative agreement that emerged from that marathon session.

“I think we all realized we were coming to the start of school, we both … wanted to get something accomplished, and we had some very good discussions that day that kind of got the stalemate moving,” Newport said.

Students’ first day of the 2016-17 school year is Wednesday.

CHICAGO – Left out of federal labor law written decades ago, nannies, housekeepers and private caregivers are gaining legal protections in a growing number of states, with Illinois becoming the latest to establish a domestic workers’ “bill of rights.”

The Illinois rules, signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner this month, extend sexual harassment protections as well as minimum-wage pay and a guaranteed one day off in a seven-day work week to the domestic workforce, which is mostly female and immigrant heavy.

Six other states have similar laws, but Illinois is now the first in the Midwest, and advocates said they hope to expand their efforts into the southern states.

Backers said the laws are needed because domestic workers are particularly vulnerable to exploitation: They work alone at odd hours and often live where they work. The pay can be measly and for immigrants, language and legal status can complicate things.

Feds in terror case want max term for ex-Illinois guardsman

CHICAGO – Prosecutors want a federal judge next month to impose the maximum 30-year prison sentence on a former Illinois National Guard soldier who plotted to attack a military armory in his home state, saying in a new filing that “betraying one’s country while in its service is a particularly grave crime.”

Special meaning for honorary highways in central Illinois

PEORIA – Nearly two dozen stretches of roadways across central Illinois are designated to memorialize someone.

An Illinois Department of Transportation report said there are 22 such designated pieces of roadway in the 12 counties of the department’s Fourth District, which runs from south of the Quad Cities to the McLean County line.

The honors often go to military members or public safety workers who have died in the line of duty or community leaders, the Journal Star reported. During the last several months, state lawmakers have voted five times to name a section of a state-controlled road for an honoree.

A third are bridges. Others are on state roads running through the towns, and some are on interstate highways.

“We didn’t think about anything else,” she said. “We were scared we were going to lose the (housekeeping job) and lose the money.”

She’s since obtained legal status and said the new law will make things far easier.

CHICAGO – Illinois State Police officials said a trooper shot and wounded a teenage boy who was inside a fleeing stolen vehicle on Chicago’s South Side.

State police told The Chicago Sun-Times that the vehicle was reported stolen at gunpoint earlier Saturday. A trooper later spotted the vehicle and tried to pull it over about 6:50 p.m. The vehicle sped away, but eventually was caught in traffic at the northbound Chinatown ramp.

Illinois State Police said a 17-year-old girl has been arrested in the weekend stabbing of a 16-year-old girl at the Illinois State Fair.

A statement from the agency said the stabbing occurred Saturday night in the carnival area of the fair in Springfield.

The statement said the girl was expected to be released from the hospital Sunday. It describes the incident as “isolated.”

Suspect’s ex-girlfriend lived at Alabama home where 5 slain

The Associated Press ATLANTA – The suspect in the killing of five people at a home in Alabama attacked them while they slept and then abducted his estranged girlfriend and an infant – both of whom were found alive, authorities said Sunday.

It could take investigators days to sort out the grisly murder scene in Citronelle, a small town 30 miles northwest of Mobile. Authorities said the dead were found Saturday afternoon inside the home and included a pregnant woman.

The crime was of a magnitude rarely if ever seen in this corner of rural, southern Alabama, Mobile County sheriff’s Capt. Paul Burch said.

“It’s unprecedented here,” Burch told The Associated Press.

Earlier, Burch told reporters at the scene that investigators expect to be at the scene for a couple of days. “It’s obviously a horrific scene,” he said.

Mobile County District Attorney Ashley Rich told reporters near the scene that in her 20-year career as a prosecutor, she’s never encountered a crime “where there were five people who were brutally and viciously murdered, and that’s what we have here.”

She said “multiple weapons” were used.

Derrick Dearman, 27, of Leakesville, Mississippi, was taken into custody after he walked into the sheriff’s office in Greene County, Mississippi, about 20 miles west of Citronelle, Burch said. Dearman was accompanied by his father when he showed up at the sheriff’s department and surrendered Saturday afternoon, the Alabama sheriff’s office

said in a statement.

Dearman has confessed to the crimes, Burch told the news site Al.com.

“He’s been cooperative,” Burch told the AP on Sunday.

Dearman will be charged with six counts of capital murder, Mobile County sheriff’s spokeswoman Lori Myles said Sunday. Five counts stem from the killing of the adults, and the additional count is because one of the slaying victims, 22-year-old Chelsea Marie Reed, was five months’ pregnant, Myles said.

The other four killed were identified by sheriff’s officials as Shannon Melissa Randall, 35; Justin Kaleb Reed, 23; Joseph Adam Turner, 26; and Robert Lee Brown, also 26.

Prosecutors have already begun the process of trying to extradite Dearman from Mississippi to Alabama, Burch said on Sunday. The sheriff of Greene County, Stanley McLeod, could not be reached for comment Sunday.

Though connections between Dearman and the five people killed were not immediately clear, investigators have determined that his ex-girlfriend, Laneta Lester, had gone to the home on Aug. 19 to get away from an abusive relationship with Dearman, the sheriff’s office said in a statement. Lester was staying with a relative there.

Around 1 a.m. Saturday, someone inside the residence called 911 and reported that Dearman was on the property, the statement said. Citronelle police came to the house, but Dearman had left before the officers arrived, sheriff’s officials said.

Later, sometime between 1:15 a.m. and daylight Saturday, Dearman returned to the home and attacked the victims while they were sleeping, the statement said.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Five days after an explosive wildfire in Southern California drove thousands from their homes, authorities lifted all evacuation orders on Sunday to allow them to return.

About 82,000 people were ordered to leave their properties Tuesday when the fire broke out 60 miles east of Los Angeles.

Most of those residents are returning to find their homes intact, though not all. A preliminary damage assessment found 105 homes and 216 outbuildings destroyed across the rural, mountainous terrain where large swaths of open land have been turned black.

“This fire did not go through a dense community, like some fires do,” fire spokesman Costa Dillon said Sunday. “Almost all of this area is sparsely populated.”

The once-fast-moving and erratic blaze that burned nearly 58 square miles was 85 percent contained. Firefighters were going property-to-property in the areas most heavily hit to quell any lingering flames and hot spots.

“You don’t want somebody to come

able to return to save anything.

That fire has destroyed 34 homes and burned 43 square miles since it began Aug. 13. It remained 35 percent contained. Fire spokeswoman Jaime Garrett said the fire was growing in the opposite direction of the Hearst Castle. The castle is a popular tourist attraction and houses a large art collection that belonged to media magnate William Randolph Hearst.

In rural Santa Barbara County, a 33-square-mile wildfire that forced the evacuation of two campgrounds was 20 percent contained.

Is Obama fiddling while Aleppo burns?

“Devastating and overwhelming.”

Those are the conditions in the ancient and once-great metropolis of Aleppo, according to the head of delegation for the International Committee of the Red Cross, Marianne Gasser, who was in the Syrian city recently.

“We hear that are dozens of civilians are being killed every day and scores more are injured from shells, mortars and rockets,” Gasser said.

“The bombing is constant. The violence is threatening hundreds of thousands of people’s lives, homes and livelihoods.”

War crimes appear to be near-constant also. The air forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his chief backer, Russian President Vladimir Putin, target apartment buildings, bakeries and – this is their specialty – hospitals and clinics.

The United Nations is investigating credible reports that Assad again has used chemical weapons, in this case chlorine gas. Water has been cut off from hundreds of thousands of people.

The last surviving physicians in the rebel-held half of Aleppo a few days ago begged President Obama to help. “The world has stood by and remarked how ‘complicated’ Syria is, while doing little to protect us,” they wrote. “The burden of responsibility for the crimes of the Syrian government and its Russian ally must therefore be shared by those, including the United States, who allow them to continue.”

Why would these brave, forlorn doctors look to Obama for rescue?

Perhaps one of them, through the terrible din of war, remembers hearing the president promise to stand by the Syrian people as they were being “subjected to unspeakable violence, simply for demanding their universal rights.”

Obama made his pledge during an address at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in April 2012.

THE FIRST

AMENDMENT

He boasted that he had decreed, in a first for any U.S. president, that preventing mass atrocities “is a core national security interest and a core moral responsibility of the United States of America.” That did not mean that the United States would “intervene militarily every time there’s an injustice in the world,” he cautioned. But when it came to Syria, Obama was clear.

“The Syrian people have not given up, which is why we cannot give up,” Obama said. “And so with allies and partners, we will keep increasing the pressure, with a diplomatic effort to further isolate Assad and his regime, so that those who stick with Assad know that they are making a losing bet.”

Alas, that was many atrocities ago. According to the Red Cross, more than 12 million Syrians – half the prewar population – have been forced from their homes, with millions more under siege. Hundreds of thousands have been killed.

Well over 1 million have been wounded. Iran and Russia continue to place their bets on the Assad regime.

And Obama no longer pledges to stand with the Syrian people, though he remains clear-eyed about what they are facing.

“The regime and its allies,” Obama observed at a Pentagon news conference this month, are engaged in “vicious attacks on defenseless civilians, medieval sieges against cities like Aleppo, and blocking food from reaching families that are starving.”

But the administration’s response has not changed: a combination of halfhearted support for the rebels, who increasingly gravitate by necessity to more extremist groups; requests to the Russians to behave better; and finger wagging.

“It is deplorable,” the president said during his visit to the Pentagon. Small comfort to the people of Aleppo.

The Washington Post The Question: How should the next president address wealth inequality?

Prize-winning economist, put it well: “There just isn’t a striking, simple relationship between inequality and growth; all the results depend on doing fairly elaborate data massaging, which might be right but might also be teasing out a relationship that isn’t really there.”

To be sure, all this research provides little reason to think that marginally reducing inequality would worsen any of these outcomes.

But it probably would not improve them either. Studies consistently find that the U.S. tax system is already among the most progressive in the world. Prioritizing inequality betrays indifference to policy outcomes and pure antipathy toward top earners.

In truth, nothing helps the poor and middle class like economic growth, and that is best pursued by policy reforms that ignore inequality.

To promote growth, the next president should abolish corporate taxes and reform individual taxes to keep the overall burden of taxation the

same across poor, middle-class and rich Americans. She should promote state and local reform of occupational licensing and land-use regulation.

She should reform entitlements, including Obamacare, and reorient immigration policy in favor of admitting more higher-skilled and less lower-skilled immigrants. She should pursue a deregulatory agenda and nominate economists to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors who favor nominal GDP targeting, which prioritizes achieving desired growth rates over inflation targets and would tend to allow more wage growth.

Unfortunately, the distraction of inequality – or nationalism – makes it unlikely the next president will pursue any of these policies, and the poor and middle class will be worse off for it.

A reminder that not every police shooting is unjust If the violent eruptions in Milwaukee earlier this month were familiar, it’s because they seemed to follow a script that, by now, has become numbingly routine. A Milwaukee police officer shot and killed a young black man. Protests and condemnations followed. Police were accused, once again, of treating black citizens as target practice.

In the last two years, police violence against unarmed black Americans has rightly claimed public attention, launching a new civil-rights movement by a loose-knit collection of young activists cooperating under the banner of “Black Lives Matter.” Aided by ubiquitous cellphone cameras, they have helped to bring much-needed scrutiny to police tactics that are dangerous, unfair and probably racist.

Their calls for greater police accountability have echoed through this political season.

But that familiar script – the one in which citizens appropriately protest a needless police shooting – may not be the one that played out in Milwaukee earlier this month. (And rioting and arson are never justified, in any event.) According to city officials, 23-year-old Sylville Smith, who fled police after a traffic stop, had a gun

VIEWS Cynthia Tucker in hand when he turned to confront a police officer. The officer, in turn, shot him dead.

There were no bystanders to record the episode, no eyewitnesses coming forward to claim Smith had his hands up. There is no independent video footage available. But Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett told reporters that a still image from the police officer’s body camera shows Smith holding a gun as he turns toward the officer.

It’s hardly surprising, then, that the officer reacted by firing his weapon.

Not every police shooting of a black man is unjustified.

Sometimes law enforcement authorities have no choice but to shoot a criminal suspect who behaves in a way that poses risks – both to police personnel and to civilians.

There are plenty of cases wherein police officers have escalated confrontations, threatened violence needlessly, and even killed black men and boys who posed no risk. Those

victims deserve to be held apart from the street thugs whose confrontations with police necessarily end violently.

They deserve the protests and demonstrations, the news conferences and demands for new tactics that have come from Black Lives Matter activists. Think Eric Garner and Alton Sterling. Think Tamir Rice and John Crawford III. Think Walter Scott and Samuel DuBose.

Don’t think Michael Brown. I still chafe at the mention of his name.

Brown’s 2014 shooting death, paradoxically, became the cause celebre that fueled the birth of Black Lives Matter, but he was no innocent. A U.S. Justice Department investigation found that Brown, who had just stolen cigars from a convenience store, likely struggled with the police officer who tried to arrest him. Forensic evidence suggested that he didn’t have his hands up when he was shot, despite witness testimony that he did.

Yes, yes, civilians have every right to hold law enforcement officials to a higher standard, to insist that police officers learn to de-escalate conflicts, to demand that police who recklessly target unarmed civilians are not only prosecuted but also convicted.

Citizens in places such as Mil-

waukee, where systemic racism still thrives, also have every right to demand better schools, equal employment opportunities, and a criminal justice system that does not disproportionately incarcerate black men and women. Those unjust conditions – and crushing poverty – helped fuel the rage that lit fires in the wake of Smith’s death.

But those of us who insist on reforming a criminal justice system still plagued by racism must also acknowledge that even police officers who do everything right will sometimes end up firing their weapons. That’s the nature of their work. And much of that work takes place in dangerous neighborhoods, where the law-abiding citizens are most at risk.

Sylville Smith was no Philando Castile, the well-liked cafeteria worker shot dead in suburban St. Paul, Minnesota, during a traffic stop in July – killed, his girlfriend said, as he reached for his ID. It stretches credibility to act as if their deaths were equally unjust.

Changes to the tax code certainly could reduce inequality, but the real question is whether we should try to reduce it. There is little evidence that we should.

Are American levels of inequality harmful? Some analysts claim that they hurt middle-class incomes or increase poverty. But child poverty is at an all-time low, and middle-class incomes are also at historic highs.

Across developed countries, those with higher inequality have slightly higher middle-class incomes and less poverty.

Others argue – based on mobility measures constructed to look worse when inequality rises – that higher inequality causes lower economic mobility or leads to political inequal-

ity. In fact, research claiming that the rich get their way in Congress over other voters has been debunked; in truth, across most issues, rich, middle-class and poor Americans have similar policy preferences.

And in the United States, mobility has remained flat while inequality has risen over the past generation.

Areas of the United States with more income concentration at the top have no worse mobility than areas with low inequality. The same is true across countries – the best research indicates that low-inequality Sweden is no more mobile than the United States.

Still others, such as Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz, claim that higher inequality saps economic growth.

The research on this question is all over the map, but studies by experts including Thomas Piketty and Emmanuel Saez indicate that countries with higher inequality growth tend to have higher economic growth too. Paul Krugman, another Nobel

Walnut Grove Vocational Farm sets Fall Open House DAILY CHRONICLE The Walnut Grove Vocational Farm, a program of DeKalb County Community Gardens, will host its second annual Fall Open House from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

The farm at 33600 Pearl St., north of Kirkland, is the only farm and greenhouse operation in northern Illinois where individuals with special needs learn about agriculture and horticulture while raising vegetables and plants.

DCCG is partnering with DeKalb County high school transition programs to provide horticulture and agriculture training for individuals with a variety of handicaps. The goal is to provide them with skills that can lead to employment with area growers such as Midwest Ground Covers in Virgil, or other greenhouse operations. Also others will be able to

eventually grow their own vegetables in their own gardens, which can lead to having their own small businesses.

This is an innovative program that combines growing food for the food insecure with training individuals with special needs.

On Saturday, there will be tomato and garlic tastings and music provided by Kayla’s DJ service, operated by an individual who lives with special needs. Farm tours will be led at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Mums, fountain grass and flowering kale, as well as u-pick vegetables, will be available for sale.

Tours of the 10-acre savannah prairie restoration project will be provided by Ron Cress, lead prairie steward.

Visitors can see the second greenhouse under construction, the newly finished packing shed, the pumpkin patch and more.

The Gurler Heritage Association will present a new event this year during Corn Fest – Heritage Skills Day. Bring the family a short walk from downtown to 205 Pine St. on Saturday for talks and hands-on demonstrations of practical and artisanal skills from days gone by.

Activities will include timber frame construction similar to methods used to build the Gurler House, spinning wool and other textile arts, food preservation, primitive fire-making by friction, prairie management, acoustic music performances and more.

Attendees are invited to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy around noon.

Baked goods and beverages will be available for sale to help raise money to maintain the house. The event is free but donations will be accepted.

The DeKalb Police Department is partnering with Target to offer a child safety seat checkup event from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Aug. 30.

The event will be in the Target parking lot at 2555 Sycamore Road in DeKalb.

Certified child safety seat technicians, including police officers, will be on hand to answer questions, inspect seats and assist motorists with proper safety seat installation in their vehicles.

The DeKalb Public Library will reopen the much anticipated Haish Memorial Library building at 9 a.m.

Saturday, Sept. 10.

The day will complete the two-year, $25.3 million expansion and restoration project that began in June 2014.

In order to prepare for the big day, the library is closed through Sept. 9.

Patrons are asked to make different arrangements for holds to be picked up at other local libraries.

The Haish building will house the new Teen Room, Local History Room, KishHealth System Computer Lab, four adult study rooms and the Nancy D. Castle Collaboration Studio. It also will be home to the large-print, graphic novel, teen and local history collections.

The Nancy D. Castle Collaboration Studio, the most technology savvy room in the library, will have three 3-D printers, an Access Share sys-

tem for group projects, and Vydeo, a program designed to allow for virtual interviews and conference calls.

On Grander Opening Day, the ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. It will consist of keynote speakers, a time capsule dedication and the symbolic ribbon-cutting.

After the ceremony, the remainder of the day will be dedicated to programming for all ages. The Local History Room will feature two genealogy programs, “Who’s been sleeping in my house?” at 11 a.m. and “Beginning Genealogy Research” at 2 p.m. Both programs will be led by local historian Steve Bigolin and local history librarian Teresa Iversen.

The Friends of the DeKalb Public Library will register members and sell books and other materials. The library will sell merchandise, including T-shirts, blankets, e-reader covers and more.

SYCAMORE – Sycamore has the chance to make noise in the post-season and it starts with the leadership of David Schmitt, the 2015 Daily Chronicle Boys Soccer Player of the Year.

Schmitt is returning for his senior year and he will again be the anchor on defense and for the Spartans as a whole.

“I would expect the same leadership qualities I saw last year,” Sycamore coach David Bachta said.

“He has enthusiasm, heart, motivation and toughness. He is a genuine young athlete and the other players on the team feed off that.”

Schmitt said that he can continue to be a good defender for his team by keeping good position and winning balls in the air.

“Honestly, I don’t have many personal goals for myself this year besides just being a good defender for my team,” Schmitt said. “I just want to be a good leader on and off the field. That starts with the mental side in warmups and in practice and making sure that everyone is doing their jobs and doing what they need to do for the team, even if they’re tired.”

Schmitt is a member of a senior class that won only three games three years ago and he has endured the growing pains during the rise of the program. In the two previous seasons, Bachta has been the head boys coach, the varsity team has increased its season win total every year so far. Bachta took over the team in 2014, and led the Spartans to the Northern Illinois Big 12 championship in 2015.

Bachta said a big part of that turnaround for the program is the players that have gone through the transformation into an annual

“Not to sound cocky, but I expect us to win our conference again this year,” Schmitt said. “On top of that I want to advance a lot farther in the postseason than we did last year.”

The lowdown: Tate is fortunate to have a large number of athletes trying out for the boys soccer team this year and he expects about half of them to make the varsity squad.

Having the luxury of such a large number, Tate feels that he can use that depth as an advantage against the rest of the conference.

Genoa-Kingston will play each team in the conference once in the Big Northern’s new one-division format and he is confident he has a chance against every team.

Hinckley-Big Rock

The Lowdown: Paul Taeuber is entering his

ninth season as the Hinckley-Big Rock boys soccer coach and is coming off two consecutive regional championships. He believes the 2016 he has is very athletic and can find ways to score even after losing his top scorer from last year to graduation. The team shows athleticism and speed, and he will be looking for a good chunk of scoring from younger players specifically Koda Gum and Tate Sanderson, who have both started on varsity last season.

Coach Eric Schrader’s comments: “I feel like we can be a really good team and compete at the top of our conference, but it’s going to come down to staying healthy.

As far as numbers, we are very low and right now I’m looking at 12 or 13 guys on the team.

I feel very confident in the 11 guys that will be on the field, but when those games come when we have to use a lot of subs it could get interesting.”

The Lowdown: Indian Creek will be bringing a small team to 2016 that is leaving them with only a few substitutions available for matches. Coach Eric Schrader thinks that if the pieces fall into place his team can still contend for a conference championship even with a limited roster. Those big pieces include the overall health of the team and senior Trevor Guerra, who broke the school scoring record in 2015. It would be hard to break the school record again, but Schrader believes that Guerra has the ability to do so again.

“I think if Addison played here right now, he’d probably have at least 25 homers and be approaching 100 RBIs,” said Maddon, who took Russell out of the game after the second homer to give him a breather in the blowout. “In his brief major league career, he’s playing at the top of his game right now. That was not an anomaly. He’s got that kind of power.”

Beyond that, Maddon and the Cubs will take little of that game with them to San Diego as the nine-game trip continues.

season: A mental flush and a renewed focus on the final 39 games of the regular season and the playoff reset to follow.

“I’ve already said it, but numbers aren’t going to mean anything to me at this point as an individual,” said Heyward, whose .225, no-power slump this season has deepened since the All-Star break (.170, one homer).

“Wins and losses and what I do to help this team win, like I can, that’s it. That’s the bottom line,” he said.

“And in October, if we keep doing what we can, right now, keep playing the way we’re capable of after that point, nobody looks up and sees what the regular season looks like. Nobody cares. That’s the fortunate thing about playing in October.”

Whatever might become of his playing status by then.

“I’m going to do what I can right now,” he said, “and go out there and relax, have some fun and help this team. And if we get to October, go from there.”

Abreu, defense help Quintana get 10th victory

CHICAGO – Backed by enough runs and some nifty defense, Jose Quintana finally reached a personal milestone he’s been craving.

Quintana pitched into the eighth inning to earn a career-best 10th win, and Jose Abreu homered for the second straight game to lead the White Sox to a 4-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Sunday.

“This was really special for me,” QuinJose Quintana tana said. “When the year started, (winning 10) was my first goal.

“All my guys, teammates, celebrated with me.”

Todd Frazier had three hits and drove in two runs, and Justin Morneau added an RBI double in a threerun first as the Sox took the final two games of the series and handed Oakland its seventh loss in eight games.

Tim Anderson also had three hits.

Khris Davis hit his 32nd homer, a two-run shot, off Quintana (10-9), who finished with nine wins in each of the

previous three seasons. The left-hander struck out six and walked one while allowing eight hits, and improved to 5-1 with a 2.25 ERA in his past nine starts.

Frazier said the normally reserved Quintana was “just yelling and screaming like a little kid” when the Sox re-entered their clubhouse.

“He deserves it,” Frazier said.

“Sometimes you gotta get like that in this game.”

Quintana, who entered with a run-support average of 3.31 per nine innings pitched – second lowest in the AL – got more help than usual from his teammates, both offensively and defensively. Center fielder J.B. Shuck made two great catches, including a running grab of Ryon Healy’s hard-hit line drive with two outs in the first and runners on second and third.

The Sox staked Quintana to a 3-0 lead in the bottom half.

“It helps a lot ... with the lack of run support he’s had over a period of time,” manager Robin Ventura said. “After that point, he was pretty strong.”

Quintana got two quick strikes on Jake Smolinski to lead off the eighth, but walked him and then was replaced

DENVER – You couldn’t blame this one on Jason Heyward.

The Cubs’ struggling right fielder spent Sunday’s 11-4 loss to the Rockies as he did the previous three games – taking manager Joe Maddon’s prescription to “chill” and watch the other guys play.

But by the time he packed his bag in the clubhouse Sunday afternoon, he was back to doing what the rest of the team was doing after their series loss at Coors Field: “Right now it’s just all about trying to hit the reset button for me,” said Heyward, who resumes his starting role in right field Monday when the Cubs open a three-game series against the Padres in San Diego against ex-Cub Edwin Jackson.

“It’s about going forward,” he said. “The goal was just to come in and relax and watch a baseball game and not overthink it. And understand

that I can help this team in a lot of ways coming back from it.

Kim wins Wyndham Championship Rain postpones IndyCar race at Pocono until Monday for 1st PGA Tour title GREENSBORO, N.C. – Si Woo Kim had a productive week at the Wyndham Championship. He claimed one tournament record, a share of another – and, most importantly, his first PGA Tour trophy.

The 21-year-old South Korean player closed with a 3-under-par 67 for a fivestroke victory Sunday. He had a 21-under 259 total at Sedgefield, tying the event 72-hole record set eight years ago by Carl Pettersson.

Kim matched Pettersson by sinking an uphill 14-foot birdie putt on the final hole, then said through an interpreter that he “never expected any course record.”

Kim set a tournament record with a 60 in the second round. He earned 500 FedEx Cup points and $1,008,000 in prize money in the regular-season finale.

LONG POND, Pa. – With rain pelting the garage roof at Pocono Raceway and knowing he’d have to wait another day to race, Mikhail Aleshin just shrugged.

“Just one more day sitting on the pole,” Aleshin said Sunday. “That’s life. I just want to win this race. For me, it doesn’t matter if it’s going to be today, tomorrow, or next month. I’m still on the pole.”

IndyCar officials acted quickly Sunday and postponed the race at the triangular 2.5-mile track until 11 a.m. Monday because of persistent mid-afternoon rain.

With no lights to allow for night racing and no quick end to the downpour in sight, drying the track in time to get in 101 of the 200 laps to make the race official was not possible.

LAKE FOREST – The Bears practiced at Halas Hall for the first time in a week, and 20 players were held out of practice, including first-round pick Leonard Floyd.

Coach John Fox said the rookie outside linebacker has a slight hamstring injury, and keeping him out was precautionary. The Bears will not practice Monday before getting into “more of a game schedule” during the week before Saturday’s preseason game against the Chiefs, which gives the injured players two days before seeing whether they can return to participation Tuesday.

“We’ve now broken camp. We’ll treat this a little bit like it’s a Sunday game, even though it’s a Saturday game, as far as how we try to simulate in-season days when we get into that,” Fox said.

“So we try to simulate that as much as we can, even with game planning and things like that.”

Rookie DL Jonathan Bullard was absent for personal reasons, while DB Tracy Porter and MLB Jerrell Freeman had the day off. OL Kyle Long (shoulder),

RB Jeremy Langford (foot), MLB Danny Trevathan (hamstring) and DB Bryce Callahan (hamstring) highlighted the players on the sideline. Langford was not wearing a walking boot.

With Porter resting and several corners – including Jacoby Glenn and De’Vante Bausby – still hurt, rookies Deiondre’ Hall and Kevin Peterson saw some extra reps.

“Again, [Peterson’s] been out there.

He’s been here all through the offseason and into training camp,” Fox said. “He hasn’t had a lot of opportunity until we got nicked up at the position. So this will be a big opportunity for him, as well as the final preseason game against Cleveland.”

WR Alshon Jeffery said he’s been impressed with what Hall has done on the other side of the ball.

“He’s been pretty active in practice, and in the game he played pretty well,” Jeffery said.

Looking to end Hawks’ 29-year playoff drought

ecarifio@shawmedia.com KIRKLAND – Jason Keneway knows what his goals are for the Hiawatha football team. They’re 29 years in the making.

The first-year head coach said he feels this is the year the Hawks make the playoffs for the first time since 1987.

“The big one is one that hasn’t happened in a long time,” Keneway said. “It’s been 29 years since we made the playoffs. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – that’s unacceptable. With the talent we have here, and the depth of guys we have, it’s got to happen. We have a big junior class that’s full of a bunch of athletes, as well as real strong role players in the senior class. Everything is in line, we just have to meet that potential that hasn’t been met in quite a long time.”

The lowdown: In his senior year in high school in 2009, Keneway played for the last Hiawatha team that finished with a winning record. Although the team has gone 4-5 the past two season, Keneway said the team has much more potential and said he feels this is the year they realize that potential. Keneway said he’s been impressed with the improvement of a pair of juniors in Barbers and Dunbar.

Dunbar had an “incredible” offseason in the weight room according to his coach, and Barber brings a strong technique to both sides of the ball.

first time in a long time, I think everything is in place for total team success.”

Senior Edwin Yockey, who plays on both the offensive and defensive line, said the team has put in a lot of work during the offseason.

“I’ll tell you, this team is far different in the past three years,” Yockey said. “We’ve all had high expectations, but this team is different. We are really resilient and we bounce back. If we have a bad practice – it’s happened a few times – and we’ve picked it up every time. Last year, we had slumps of a week at a time almost, and it’s a lot different this year.”

Keneway said that although the Hawks will run a spread offense, they will run the ball out of it a lot. Senior Braden Watson and junior Alex Barbers return in the backfield, while sophomore Ethan Hoffman takes over at quarterback.

For Watson, getting to the playoffs has extra meaning.

“My dad (Nathan Watson) was on the playoff team, so I want to add onto that,” Watson said. “I don’t want to be the one to not make it into the playoffs.”

U.S. men romp to gold

RIO DE JANEIRO – The trip wasn’t always easy, although they arrived at their expected destination.

The players on the U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team never doubted they would be standing on the gold-medal platform, even after some close calls in Rio and criticisms they lacked the usual big names and bigger wins.

“I know there was kind of a lot of buzz around us not playing well a couple of games, two, three games in the early round,” Carmelo Anthony said, “but the way that we locked in and the way that we focused in to be able to have this gold medal around our necks was special.”

Saving their best for last in a tournament that had been tough, the Americans convincingly won their third straight gold medal, beating Serbia, 9666, on Sunday.

“We came here and despite what people are saying about this group, being less talented and not blowing teams

out, we did a good job of bottling all that up and unleashed it on Serbia,” forward Paul George said.

Kevin Durant scored 30 points in the final game with the national team for Mike Krzyzewski, who took the Americans back to the top and leaves with them there after becoming the first coach to win three Olympic gold medals.

“To go home as gold medalists and leave Coach K off with another gold was one of our main goals as well,” Durant said.

Anthony also picked up his third gold to go with a bronze, becoming the most decorated male in Olympic basketball history.

The U.S. beat Serbia by just 94-91 in pool play, holding on when Bogdan Bogdanovic missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer. This rematch looked nothing like that meeting, but it did resemble the final of the 2014 Basketball World Cup, which the Americans won, 129-92.

“To come out there and play as well as we did against a team that had stepped up their play as well, it showed that we came together at the right

time,” Durant said.

Anthony checked back into the rout in the final minutes so he could grab a seventh rebound, passing David Robinson for the U.S. record with the 125th in his Olympic career. He had already become the leading scorer earlier in the tournament, capping an Olympic career that began with disappointment as a member of the U.S. team that finished third in 2004.

The Americans haven’t lost since, winning 25 straight in the Olympics.

A few of the victories were more difficult than usual in this tournament, where half the Americans’ eight games were decided by 10 points or fewer.

Krzyzewski said it didn’t matter how the Americans won, that there would be no questions as long as they did.

And there was no doubt they would Sunday once Durant heated up.

He had also scored 30 in the 2012 gold-medal game, after he poured in a U.S.-record 38 in one game en route to the MVP of the 2010 world basketball championship. He is already the Americans’ No. 2 career scorer in the Olympics in just two appearances.

“I over-exaggerated the story,” Lochte told NBC in an interview that aired Saturday. In a separate interview with a Brazilian network, he blamed the mess on his “immaturity.”

Whatever additional scrutiny U.S. athletes faced after the swimming episode didn’t seem to hurt their performance.

“Hopefully the lesson learned more than anything else is you’re representing your country, you’re representing your sport, you’re representing a movement,” Blackmun said. “So you need to conduct yourself in a way that makes us all proud.”

There were plenty of those examples.

Michael Phelps won six medals in Rio, sprinting star Allyson Felix increased her Olympic gold collection to six and gymnast Simone Biles won five medals plus got the honor of being the U.S. flagbearer for Sunday’s closing ceremony. Phelps carried the flag into the opening of what he says will be his final games, and now the bearer role – as well as maybe the role of being the face of the U.S. Olympic team – belongs to Biles.

“It’s a huge honor,” said the 4-foot8 Biles, though she noted she’s a bit

worried about handling the weight of the flag.

Stories like hers and many others were the ones the USOC would have preferred to see dominate discussion as the Rio Games end, instead of incessant talk about a mess that could have been easily avoided.

“The things that you do are going to be magnified and the mistakes that you make are going to have a light shined on them in a way that’s going to make it very difficult for you to overcome,” Blackmun said.

USA Swimming and the IOC both could sanction Lochte. IOC member Anita DeFrantz of the U.S. said it’s possible that Olympic officials could simply decide to let the USOC handle the matter.

DeFrantz made no effort to hide her disdain for the incident.

“They have forever put themselves on the kind of list that you don’t want to be remembered for,” she told The Associated Press. “I wish I could feel sorry for them. Instead I feel that they should have been honest from the beginning. What they did was wrong, but what was even more wrong, it was ridiculous that they didn’t stand up and tell the truth.

“Who would have it hurt to tell the truth? No one. And who did it hurt not to tell the truth? It insulted a whole nation.”

RIO DE JANEIRO – Two Mongolian wrestling coaches stripped off their clothing to protest the result of a bronze medal match, a bizarre turn in a day where officiating was highly criticized.

The scene began after Uzbekisatn’s Ikhtiyor Navruzov appeared to have lost to Mandakhnaran Ganzorig, 7-6, at 65 kilograms Sunday.

Uzbekistan challenged the scoring, believing that the Mongolian was fleeing instead of fighting because he was running around in celebration with less than 10 seconds left. Navruzov – whose quarterfinal match resulted in the dismissal of all three officials involved after a questionable late call – won his challenge and the match on criteria.

Ganzorig, who had already started celebrating, fell to his knees in disappointment. The Mongolian coaches went much further. Byambarenchin Bayaraa took his shoes and shirt off and threw them to the mat in disgust in front of the officials. Tsenrenbataar Tsostbayar stripped all the way down to his blue briefs. The Brazilian crowd started chanting “Mongolia! Mongolia!”

Kenya’s Kipchoge wins gold in men’s marathon

RIO DE JANEIRO – Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya smiled as he crossed the finish line and later directed cheering fans from the podium. The one color of Olympic medal he lacked in his illustrious career finally is his.

Kipchoge grabbed the lead in the marathon Sunday around the 21-mile mark and finished off his first Olympic victory in this event in a time of 2 hours, 8 minutes and 44 seconds.

Feyisa Lilesa, of Ethiopia, won the silver medal and American Galen Rupp, running only his second marathon, added bronze to the silver he won in the 10,000 meters in London.

Snyder becomes youngest U.S. Olympic wrestling champion

RIO DE JANEIRO – American wrestler Kyle Snyder won gold on Sunday, becoming the youngest Olympic wrestling champion in U.S. history.

The 20-year-old Snyder beat Khetag Goziumov of Azerbaijan, 2-1, for gold at 97 kilograms during the men’s freestyle tournament Sunday.

RIO DE JANEIRO – Whatever celebration the U.S. Olympic Committee has planned for its return home after a wildly successful Rio de Janeiro Games on the competition front will likely be short-lived.

USOC CEO Scott Blackmun promised Sunday that “further action” will be coming, perhaps soon, against 12time Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte and three of his U.S. swimming teammates after the story of an armed robbery following a night of partying unraveled and led to Lochte acknowledging he embellished the tale.

Blackmun stopped short of suggesting what any discipline might be, including whether Lochte should ever be allowed to swim for his country again.

“We all understand that they let down our athletes. They let down Americans,” Blackmun said. “And they really let down our hosts in Rio who did such a wonderful job, and we feel very badly about that. I think we ended up in the right place in terms of being able to shine a light on what really happened there.”

Blackmun said he did not think that the story involving Lochte and the three teammates – all were gold medalists in Rio as part of U.S. swimming relay teams – should be the lasting image of a games where Americans dominated the medal count. Add up all those golds, silvers and bronzes, and no U.S. team ever won more at a fully attended Olympics.

But even USOC chairman Larry Probst said the scandal overshadowed some successes.

“It’s really disappointing that this took place, completely inappropriate,” said Probst, who also is an International Olympic Committee member. “I think the four swimmers are well aware of that now. And unfortunately it has overshadowed some really amazing performances by a lot of great athletes.”

Antiviral meds ease shingles pain Dear Dr. K: I’ve been diagnosed with shingles. What can I take for the pain?

Dear Reader: Shingles, also known as herpes zoster or just zoster, is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It is the same virus that causes chickenpox. Once you have had chickenpox, the varicella-zoster virus remains in your body’s nerve tissues. It is inactive, but it can be reactivated later in life. This causes shingles.

When the virus reactivates, it causes a burning or tingling sensation in the affected areas. A few days later, the virus causes a blistery rash. Your affected skin may be so painful and sensitive that you cannot even stand having your clothing touching the area. One patient of mine with shingles on his forearm switched for several weeks to wearing a short-sleeved shirt to the office, something he never had worn to work before.

If you’re over age 50 and have had shingles pain for less than three days, the current recommendations call for doctors to prescribe antiviral medicine to kill the virus that causes shingles. (If you are younger than 50 and very uncomfortable from shingles that began in the last three days, your doctor may still prescribe antiviral therapy.)

The two medicines recommended most often are famciclovir (Famvir) and valacyclovir (Valtrex). These antiviral medications not only help shorten the days of pain that you have, they also help reduce the risk of long-lasting shingles pain, a condition called post-herpetic neuralgia.

The pain that accompanies shingles can be intense. If the antiviral medicine does not provide enough relief, you can take additional pain medicines. Start with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and acetaminophen. If necessary, your doctor will prescribe more potent pain medicines; these include codeine, tramadol and (when the pain is very severe) oxycodone.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Some studies led doctors to add corticosteroid drugs such as prednisone to the treatment of shingles. However, as more studies of this treatment have been completed, it looks as though these medicines may offer more risks than benefits.

You should also gently rinse your skin rash and blisters once or twice daily with cool water. Your doctor may suggest that you use antibiotic ointment on open areas.

Shingles usually takes seven to 10 days to run its course. Blisters may take several weeks to disappear completely. The duration of pain is highly variable. Most people’s pain decreases within two or three months.

However, a small number of people develop post-herpetic neuralgia and continue to have pain for many months, or even years. Different medications from those used during the attack of shingles are effective.

These include tricyclic drugs, gabapentin and pregabalin. These drugs alter the way your central nervous system perceives pain signals. If the pain is severe, then the more potent drugs used for the pain of shingles may also be helpful. These include oxycodone, morphine and methadone.

Other treatments for post-herpetic neuralgia being evaluated, but as yet unproven, include capsaicin, topical lidocaine and acupuncture. A shingles vaccine is recommended for most adults age 60 and older. Even though treatment is effective, nothing beats preventing the condition in the first place.

Dear Abby: For DEAR ABBY health reasons, I had been Jeanne walking during Phillips my lunch break at work. That ended last summer when someone unleashed his dog between his house and his car. The dog saw me on the sidewalk, charged, jumped on me and bit me. Thankfully, I put my arm up, so it only got my arm, but now I’m terrified to walk outside for fear of being attacked again.

The bite was nothing compared to the trauma. I’m afraid the fear will be with me for the rest of my life. No one thinks their dog would hurt someone, but I learned the hard way it’s not always true. It was reasonable for North to use Stayman, despite his poor spades. If South also had four spades and weak diamonds, four spades could have been the best contract.

South starts with seven top tricks: one spade, one heart, one diamond and four clubs. He has finesses available in both rounded suits, and it is logical to start with the diamonds, because if that finesse wins, declarer is home.

South should duck dummy’s heart ace twice and take the third round.

In this way, he learns the good news that hearts are 4-3, not 5-2. Then he takes the diamond finesse. What happens next?

Many Wests would win the trick to cash the last heart. But then South will get into the dummy with the club queen and, perforce, take the spade finesse, and with this layout he would collect two spades, one heart, two diamonds and four clubs.

A genius West will duck the first diamond. Then declarer would surely cross to the club queen and repeat the diamond finesse. Now West produces his king, cashes the last heart, and exits with a club. Then South cannot get into the dummy to take the spade finesse and will end down one.
