Teachers OK new contract; READER POLL D-428 board to vote Saturday

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – After weeks of wrangling and the threat of a strike, teachers in DeKalb-based School District 428 approved a new three-year contract Wednesday evening, with the school board expected sign off at a special meeting Saturday morning.

“We did have an authority level that [the school board] gave the bargaining team,” said Jim Bormann, District 428’s human resources chief and a member of its collective bargaining team. “We are within that, so I expect the board to very pleased with the final result.”

The school board will meet at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Education Center Board Room, 901 S. 4th St. Classes are scheduled to start Wednesday.

The district’s 430 teachers and other professionals are represented by the DeKalb Classroom Teachers Association. A spokesman for the union declined to comment on the teachers’ ratification vote or the terms of the contract until after the board votes.

Bormann said the District 428 board meeting, which had been scheduled for Thursday, was changed after someone accused the district of potentially violating the Open Meetings Act by not posting the tentative contract with the legally required meeting notification and agenda.

The agreement, which remains tentative until the school board votes on it, indicates some wins for teachers in the bargaining. While the school board had proposed raises based on the Consumer Price Index, the union successfully bargained for raises of 1.1 percent the first year of the con-

tract and 2.12 percent in each remaining year of the three-year deal.

The three-year contract length also was a win for the union, which wanted that time frame rather than the one-year agreement the school board wanted. The board also lost its battle to totally overhaul teachers’ pay structure, which currently will be based on a union pay scale, with educators earning “step” increases based on their years of experience.

The practice of pulling retiring teachers off the salary scale and awarding them 6 percent raises in each of the four years before they retire – boosting their pension payouts – also will remain.

Benefits in the new contract also remain similar to what teachers currently have: The district pays 95 percent of teachers’ single-plan health insurance premiums and 50 percent for a plan with dependents. In a letter to parents in July, the school board had called those “gold-plated” health benefits.

Bormann said the dependent plan adds “just a little bit of cost” to the district.

Teachers’ work day will increase by 10 minutes, after the school board wanted half an hour.

Currently, teachers start their day at same time as the students. They now will be required to arrive five minutes before the first bell and stay five minutes after the last one. District 428 had proposed 15 minutes before and after.

But the union will not have input on classroom size. Teachers wanted caps on the number of kids in a classroom, but lost out on that.

The total contract could cost the district about $2 million over three years.

BOISE, Idaho – A young Hunter S. Thompson went to Idaho to write about Ernest Hemingway and decided to take a piece of his hero home with him – a set of trophy elk antlers.

More than half a century later, the gonzo journalist’s wife has returned the antlers to Hemingway’s house in the mountain town of Ketchum.

“He was embarrassed that he took them,” Anita Thompson told The Associated Press on Thursday, noting the deep respect her husband had for Hemingway’s work. “He wished he hadn’t taken them.

He was young, it was 1964, and he got caught up in

the moment.

“He talked about it several times, about taking a road trip and returning them,” she said. She gave back the antlers Aug. 5 to Ketchum Community Library, which helps catalog and preserve items in the residence where the author took his own life.

It’s now owned by the Nature Conservancy.

In 1964, Hunter Thompson, then 27, came to Ketchum when he was still a conventional journalist. He had not yet developed his signature style, dubbed gonzo journalism, that involved inserting himself, often outrageously, into his reporting and that propelled him into a larger-than-life figure.

Resource Bank opens new Sycamore branch in rehabbed garage

news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – The historical fieldstone structure at 351 N. Main St. has had many uses over the past 111 years.

It began as a garage, later was used as a filling station, and then was home to a series of restaurants. This week, it reopened in its latest incarnation as the new Sycamore branch of Resource Bank.

Bank officials decided to restore the building to its original look, and invited the public to celebrate the building’s preservation and repurposing Sunday afternoon. Richard Katz, Resource Bank president, explained the Richard Katz structure’s history to those who had gathered president both to tour the buildof Resource ing and meet branch Bank manager Kathy Meyer and her staff.

Katz spoke of how F.B. Townsend, a wealthy businessman who also was mayor of Sycamore, built the Queen Anne-style mansion next door in 1882 and then added the stone garage structure in 1905 to house his new motor car and the motor car of his brother-in-law, Elmer Boynton.

There had been problems housing what were commonly called “benzene buggies” in wooden barns because of the fire hazard, so Townsend used uncut boulders from his various farm properties in the area to construct this fireproof building.

Katz said that, coincidentally, Townsend joined with other businessmen to form the First National Bank of Malta, where he became president.

The Malta bank later became Resource Bank, and so it is fitting that the new branch now is located next to the home of its founder.

By 1926, Townsend sold his residence and garage, and the building was converted into a service station, which continued under several owners and different names for 57 years.

At one time, it was a car dealership where Sycamore resident Raymond Larson said his father, the late Walter Larson, bought his first Studebaker in 1942.

with names such as Carriage House, Gramma’s, Town Square and, most recently, Willow’s Hometown Cafe.

After the last diner closed, Resource Bank bought the property and spent the past year restoring it to its original look, installing decorative antique pumps out front and decorating the interior with local historical photos, signs and other early 20th-century artifacts.

Katz said they took pains to preserve its character “to honor Sycamore’s past and be a part of its future for many years to come.” The proper-

ty along North Main is the northern gateway to the Sycamore Historical District, which is part of the National Register of Historic Places.

Katz and Resource Bank have made a habit of preserving historic buildings.

Funerals are set for slaying victims as county investigators chase leads

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Funeral services for an 85-year-old woman and her son found beaten to death inside their home near Sycamore will be Monday.

Visitation for Patricia A. Wilson and 64-year-old Robert J. Wilson will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. John, 26555 Brickville Road, Sycamore. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. The burial at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb will be private.

Patricia Wilson was born Jan. 2, 1931. She married James Wilson in 1950. For many years, she worked at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, said Sycamore Mayor Ken Mundy, who knew the couple well through church. While quiet, both were “very nice people, willing to help anyone who needed it,” he said.

James Wilson died in August 2014; they had been married for 64 years.

Patricia Wilson graduated from Hinckley High School in 1948.

She attended regularly, Mundy said. She and her late husband had many friends, he added.

Robert J. Robert J. WilWilson son, born July 12, 1952, worked for Barber-Greene Co. in DeKalb for many years. He later worked for Caterpillar and Agco. He lived in Tennessee for two years, where he graduated from high school. He later attended Kish-

waukee College in Malta. At the age of 35, he won $1 million in the Illinois Lucky Million Instant Lottery game after his name was drawn at the Taste of Chicago in July 1988, reportedly receiving a lump sum cash payment of about $700,000.

Since the age of 18, he had served as an election judge, never once missing an election, according to his obituary.

“He was a proud and loyal member of the Moose Lodge, which was like family, where he was dedicated to helping others,” his obituary said.

The Sycamore lodge website lists him as treasurer of that organization.

Police received a 911 call around 6 p.m. Aug. 15 from a family member who had found the bodies inside the home they shared at 16058 Old State Road east of Sycamore, police have said. There were signs that someone had forced their way into the home, and Patricia Wilson’s car was miss-

ing. Investigators were still searching for the car – a white, four-door, 2010 Chevrolet Impala with Illinois license plate 903 0980 – as of Thursday afternoon, DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said.

Investigators had no new information to release about the case Thursday, Scott said.

Preliminary autopsy results released Wednesday confirmed that both victims died of blunt-force trauma.

Anyone who might have seen the vehicle or any other suspicious behavior in the area is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 815-895-2155 and ask to speak to a detective. Tips also can be made anonymously by calling DeKalb County Crime Stoppers at 815895-3272.

The DeKalb County Major Case Squad, with a team of 20 detectives, is investigating the double homicide.

Born: June 25, 1936; in Freeport, IL Died: Aug. 15, 2016; in Rockford, IL Monsignor William J. Clausen, STL, died Monday, Aug. 15, 2016, at Presence Cor Mariae Center, Rockford, IL, where he was a resident. Monsignor was born June 25, 1936, in Freeport, IL, to John Thomas and Cecilia Margaret Pettit Clausen.

Monsignor Clausen was ordained to the priesthood June 2, 1962, by the Most Rev. Loras Lane. He attended St. Thomas Catholic High School, Rockford (1950 to ’52), and Sacred Heart, Geneva, IL (1953 to ’55).

He then attended college at Sacred Heart Seminary in Hales Corners, WI (1954 to ’55) and St. Mary of the Lake, Mundelein, IL (1955 to ’58), and seminary at St. Mary of the Lake, Mundelein (1958 to ’62). Monsignor was first assigned as Parochial Vicar at St. Joseph Parish, Harvard, IL (1962 to ’64); St. Mary Parish, Pecatonica, IL (1964 to ’65); St. Joseph Parish, Elgin, IL (1965 to ’69); St. Anne Parish, Dixon, IL (1969 to ’71), St. Patrick Parish, Rochelle, IL (1971 to ’74).

He was Superintendent of St. Vincent/St. Joseph Homes, Freeport, IL, while serving as Pastor of St. Catherine Parish, Freeport (1974 to ’75). Monsignor was then Associate Chancellor for the Diocese of Rockford (1975 to ’76); Parochial Vicar at Holy Angels Parish, Aurora, IL (1976 to ’79); Pastor of St. Charles Borromeo Parish, Hampshire, IL (1979 to ’86); Rector of the Cathedral of St. Peter, Rockford (1986 to ’90); Parochial Vicar at St. Peter Parish, Geneva, IL (1990 to ’94) while he furthered his studies. He then became Pastor of St. Mary Parish, Maple Park, IL (1994 to ’06). He was named Prelate of Honor (monsignor) by Pope John Paul II in November 2000. Monsignor was a member of the Diocesan Board of Consultors (1995 to 2006) and Vicar Forane of the DeKalb Deanery (1999 to 2006). He retired July 1, 2006, but continued to assist in parishes.

Monsignor Clausen became a certified alcohol and drug addiction counselor in 1991 and has assisted many of his brothers with that counseling.

Monsignor is survived by brothers, Paul, Robert (Rose), Larry (Jean), sister-in-law Modelle Clausen; 33 nieces and nephews; 74

SYCAMORE – DeKalb County’s building inspector quit after being denied a raise, but the same County Board members who said no to a wage increase for the position months ago reversed course Wednesday.

The board voted, 22-0, to increase the starting salary for the building inspector position from a range of $22.84 to $32.84 an hour to a new scale of $25.85 to $35.84 an hour. The new rate equates to a salary range of $49,632 to $68,813 annually, without overtime, based on a 40-hour work week.

“Before, I didn’t agree with the fact that we had just hired the person at that rate and then immediately give them a raise,” said board Chairman Mark Pietrowski, D-District 3.

The person Pietrowski referred to is now-former county building inspector Dave Reynolds. He resigned in May after not receiving a raise, said his boss, county Planning and Zoning Director Paul Miller.

Miller said he fought to get what would have been a $3.50-an-hour increase, about $9,000 a year, for Reynolds, who joined the planning and zoning department in July 2015 and was paid $24.88 an hour, according to county employment data.

“He and I had an understanding [when he started] that I would do everything that I could to get him a raise commensurate with his experience. And I did,” Miller said.

Miller spoke up for the raise during fiscal 2016 budget considerations and got the nod from the county’s planning and zoning committee.

But at the full County Board meeting November 2015, when the budget came up for a vote, board members quickly moved to amend the budget to exclude the raise, and did so on a 16-8 vote. The budget was adopted unanimously without the pay increase.

Several board members said Reynolds knew the salary when he started, and they were loath to give one of the newest employees a sizable raise when workers with more years of service would not be getting the same.

Judge acquits Kingston’s ex-leader in corruption case

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A judge has acquitted former Kingston Village President John Munro of corruption charges after a three-day trial during which his defense attorney attacked the financial and accounting practices of the village government.

Judge Philip Montgomery found Munro not guilty of all charges late Wednesday afternoon. Munro, 50, wept after hearing the verdict.

“I cried like a baby,” Munro said Thursday in a phone interview John Munro from his home in Colorado. “It was quite a relief. This has been awful for our family.”

Munro was charged in October 2014 with unlawful possession of a credit card, theft and official misconduct. He also was charged with misdemeanor theft. He was accused of using a village gas card scores of times to pay for more than $4,000 worth of gasoline for his personal use.

Much of the case fell apart during the second day of trial when the judge dismissed the felony theft charge, saying prosecutors Howard Oestry and Brian Papo had failed to prove that more than $500 was at issue.

On the stand, Munro said he never viewed the village gas card as a perk of his elected position as village president. He also testified that he never used the card for personal use or his personal vehicle. He said he felt personally obligated to cover charges on the gas card that were clearly not for village use, including when the village-owned card was used to buy gas at a Casey’s in Colchester, a small town near Macomb.

The gas card charges, which didn’t have supporting receipts, had been incorrectly approved by the Village Board, Munro said.

Munro wrote two checks to the village, both for about $150, to cover the out-of-town charges. One of the checks bounced, and Munro never made an effort to pay the money back, a fact prosecutors jumped on.

“To this day, the defendant has not made good on the check he wrote,” Papo said during closing arguments.

Noting criticism of the village’s policies during 2013 and 2014, Papo said that “the village of Kingston is not on trial here” and “their policy and procedure manual isn’t on trial here.”

Munro’s attorney, Clay Campbell, made much of the village’s poor financial oversight in 2013 and 2014 during the trial. During his closing argument, Campbell called the former village treasurer “a fraud.” The judge interrupted at that point, saying the comment was “over the line.”

On Thursday, Campbell said he was pleased with the verdict and praised the “astute observations” of the judge. He was critical of the police investigation in the case and said prosecutors never should have brought charges against Munro.

“It’s baffling to me how the case ever got charged,” Campbell said.

DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack said the charges against Munro were supported by probable cause and evidence from an investigation by the Illinois State Police. He also noted that Munro was indicted by a grand jury.

“When a case is supported by substantial evidence, it should go forward,” Schmack said. “It’s important for public integrity.”

Before the trial, prosecutors had offered a plea deal that would have allowed Munro to avoid a conviction.

Munro said that although it cost him more to take the case to trial than if he had taken the deal, he said, “I was never going to admit to something I didn’t do.”

SYCAMORE – The lawyer for a Kingston man accused of raping two girls at a party on his 18th birthday wants prosecutors to turn over records related to one of the victims.

Brenton W. Cleveland, 18, of the 34700 block of Glidden Road, Kingston, is charged with unlawful restraint, aggravated criminal sexual abuse and criminal sexual assault. If convicted of the most serious charge, criminal sexual assault, he could be sentenced to four to 15 years in prison.

Both of the alleged rapes happened May 14 at a party at Cleveland’s home, police said. Police have said that alcohol was present at the home during the party.

A 15-year-old girl and a 16-year-old girl contacted police May 26 and said Cleveland raped them at the party, which was held the day before Cleveland graduated from Genoa-Kingston High School.

Cleveland pleaded not guilty Tuesday in DeKalb County court.

Cleveland’s attorney, R. James Haule, filed a discovery motion this week seeking additional discovery related to the 16-year-old victim.

It requests the name, address and phone number of a person the girl “said she was with who kissed her, causing her to recall all of the events she is alleging against” Cleveland, according to court documents.

It also seeks the names, addresses and phone numbers “of all people who sent text messages to [the girl] saying the defendant had ... told them she had sex with the defendant,” according to the motion.

The 16-year-old girl went inside Cleveland’s house the night of the party to use the bathroom, according to a statement from the girl’s father included in a request for an emergency order of protection. Cleveland pushed his way into the bathroom and closed and locked the door before raping her, the father’s statement said.

Court records show that the state already has provided evidence including the police reports and a download of the victim’s phone.

Chicago police seek to fire 7 cops for false reports

CHICAGO – Seven Chicago police officers should be fired for filing false reports in the fatal shooting of black teenager Laquan McDonald in 2014, the police superintendent said Thursday, in a move aimed at repairing the reputation of a department dogged by decades of cover-ups and scandal.

The release last year of official police reports that directly contradicted video evidence of McDonald’s shooting by a white police officer turned a spotlight on longstanding concerns about a “code of silence” in Chicago’s police force, in which officers stay quiet about or conceal possible misconduct by colleagues.

Superintendent Eddie Johnson said in a statement Thursday that after reviewing documents, video and other evidence, he was accepting the recommendation of the city’s inspector general to fire seven officers because of their accounts of the incident.

Rauner signs law setting new rules for treating sepsis

URBANA – Gov. Bruce Rauner has signed legislation named for a 5-year-old Illinois girl that will require hospitals to be better prepared to treat patients with sepsis or septic shock.

Dean Angelo Sr., the head of the Chicago police union, defended the officers. He said their interpretation of what unfolded may have been accurate from their perspective, noting that perceptions can be affected in high-stress situations, such as shootings.

“That’s what humans go through,” he said. “And contrary to popular belief, police officers are human beings.”

Chicago drafts vision for trails, swimming along 3 rivers

CHICAGO – The city of Chicago has drafted expansive recommendations for more trails and recreational options on its three rivers.

The program, called Our Great Rivers, includes detailed renderings and maps and a timeline extending to 2040. But it offers no answer to the question of how to pay for the work, saying any recommendation would be premature.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office called it the first unified vision for the Calumet, Chicago and Des Plaines rivers.

In a first, Trump says he regrets painful comments

WASHINGTON – For the first time since declaring his presidential run, Republican Donald Trump offered an extended apology to those who may have been hurt by his caustic comments, saying that he regrets some of what he’s said “in the heat of debate.”

“Sometimes in the heat of debate and speaking on a multitude of issues, you don’t choose the right words or you say the wrong thing.

I have done that,” the GOP nominee reading from prepared text, said at a rally in Charlotte, N.C. “And believe it or not, I regret it, particularly where it may have caused personal pain.”

He added: “Too much is at stake for us to be consumed with these issues.” As the crowd cheered, Trump pledged to “always tell you the truth.”

The remarks came as Trump makes significant changes to a campaign that has struggled since the Democratic and GOP nominating conventions from self-created distractions. Earlier Thursday, Trump moved to invest nearly $5 million in battleground state advertising to address daunting challenges in the states that will make or break his White House ambitions.

He also shook up his campaign in recent days, tapping a combative conservative media executive, Stephen Bannon, as campaign CEO. The New York businessman’s campaign reserved TV ad space over the coming 10 days in Florida, North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania, according to Kantar Media’s political ad tracker. While Democrat Hillary Clinton has spent more than $75 million on advertising in 10 states since locking up her party’s nomination, Trump’s new investment marks his first of the general election season.

Election Day is 81 days away, with early voting in the first states to begin in five weeks.

The step into swing-state advertising, which came after Trump’s second staffing shake-up in as many months, did little to alle-

viate the concerns of Republican officials frustrated with Trump’s refusal to adopt the tools of modern-day political campaigns.

“We may have reached the point of no return for Donald Trump,” said Republican strategist Alex Conant, a senior aide to Florida Sen. Marco Rubio’s presidential campaign.

In addition to Bannon, Republican pollster Kellyanne Conway filled the campaign manager position left vacant since Trump fired his former campaign chief almost two months ago.

But Trump struck a new, inclusive tone on Thursday, as he worked to improve his dismal pole numbers among nonwhite voters.

“I will not rest until children of every color in this country are fully included in the American Dream,” he said.

Conway insisted Thursday that the new team would help re-focus the nominee, without sacrificing the authenticity that fueled his successful primary campaign.

“We’re going to sharpen the message,” Conway told CNN. “We’re going to make sure Donald Trump is comfortable about being in his own skin – that he doesn’t lose that authenticity that you simply can’t buy and a pollster can’t give you. Voters know if you’re comfortable in your own skin.”

Rarely do presidential campaigns wait to advertise, or undergo such leadership tumult, at such a late stage of the general election.

Yet Trump has struggled badly in recent weeks to offer voters a consistent message, overshadowing formal policy speeches with a steady stream of self-created controversies, including a public feud with an American Muslim family whose son was killed while serving in the U.S. military in Iraq.

He now trails Clinton in preference polls of most key battleground states. And his party leaders, even at the Republican National Committee, already have conceded they may divert resources away from the presidential contest in favor of vulnerable Senate and House candidates if things don’t improve.

Panic at NYC’s JFK could have been avoided

New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport – simply a bore to pass through on most days – descended into chaos last weekend.

Waves of confusion rippled through its terminals when passengers, thinking a terrorist attack was underway, stampeded haphazardly in search of refuge. It was all for nothing.

There was no attack, no “active shooter.” Evidently, a crowd watching the Olympics on Sunday night had been cheering, and some mistook the clapping for gunshots and fled. As they did, they knocked over security cordons, which sounded like yet more shots. Soon, the airport was gripped by a cascading panic, with mobs rushing, alarms blaring and rumors spreading.

In this horrifying nonevent, many of the errors the U.S. has made in response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks – 15 years ago next month – were exemplified.

Start with security. According to a gripping account by David Wallace-Wells in New York magazine, communication from security personnel was essentially nonexistent. No one in uniform could explain what was happening, many were themselves panicking, and crowds were allowed to dash dangerously about the airport without direction. It’s a wonder no one was hurt.

That airport officials were unprepared for such a situation – after Brussels and Istanbul and Paris and Nice and Dallas and Orlando – boggles the mind. According to Wallace-Wells, about the only thing security guards did do was order people off the tarmac where they had gathered for safety – and back into the building where a shooter was rumored to be on the loose. After all, civilians aren’t allowed on the tarmac. It was exactly the kind of exasperating box-checking that’s been a hallmark of security after Sept. 11.

Certainly, there are ways to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again. Better communication between authorities and the public – in person, over the intercom, on electronic signs, through social media, all of the above – is an obvious one.

On Wednesday, state and city officials pledged a review of the response.

But that leaves a deeper question: Why was this crowd so susceptible to panic? Anxiety is understandable in such a situation, and in such apprehensive times. But members of the public bear some responsibility for remaining calm – which is possible, as Wallace-Wells’ account shows. Government officials could help by not being so quick to invoke fear over resilience, and to opt for security theater over sensible risk assessment, as they too often have in the past 15 years. Doing so erodes the public’s ability to put terrorism in perspective, and to think logically when faced with a threat.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but this is precisely the point of terrorism: to induce perpetual anxiety, compel costly overreactions, and provoke a liberal society into curtailing its freedoms in the vain hope of perfect security. The answer to this grim dynamic must be vigilance and fortitude, not fear. If the panic at JFK demonstrated anything, it’s that terrorism can succeed even when no one is killed.

Attacks on police officers not hate crimes Should the law treat attacks on police officers as “hate crimes” in the same way it does attacks on racial and religious minorities? A movement known as “Blue Lives Matter” – an unsubtle answer to “Black Lives Matter” – believes so and, unfortunately, it’s gaining converts.

Especially after the killings of police officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Dallas, this campaign is likely to continue to gain adherents.

But it’s based on a misunderstanding of what hate crime statutes are designed to do.

Every violent attack on a human being is hateful, but as originally conceived, a hate crime also is rooted in a pervasive and especially pernicious prejudice that infects society at large. The paradigm of such prejudice in this country is racism, the toxic taproot of both racial violence against minorities and day-to-day discrimination.

Hate-crime laws deal with bias-motivated acts of violence in one of two ways: either by making them crimes in themselves (as the principal federal hate-crime statute does) or by providing harsher punishment for someone convicted of a traditional offense such as assault and battery if the defendant chose his victim on the basis of a characteristic such as race. In either case, the evil addressed by the law extends beyond a specific criminal act.

Of course, no one should tolerate attacks on police officers or object to punishment for those who attack them. But it’s specious to equate distrust of – or even hostility to – law enforcement with the sort of pervasive racial or religious prejudice hate-crime statutes are designed to address.

Moreover, it is possible to provide additional penalties for attacks on police officers without declaring them hate crimes. Even before Louisiana amended its hate-crime statute, state law provid-

ed for longer sentences for those who committed attacks on a “peace officer.”

As much as we disagree with the campaign to add police officers to the list of groups covered by hate-crime laws, we understand why the idea has gained traction. In recent years, hate-crime laws at both the state and federal level have evolved, expanding to include an increasing number of categories of victims. That creates the temptation to expand the coverage further to encompass “our” group.

The federal hate-crime statute allows for the prosecution of acts of violence motivated by the victim’s race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability. Yet reports of bias-related crimes in some of those categories is vanishingly small. (In 2014, according to the FBI, only 1.5 percent of single-bias incidents – those in which only one trait was targeted – involved disability.) State hatecrime laws have been expanded to include crimes targeting not only the physically and mentally disabled but also the elderly and the homeless.

This overbroad definition creates two impressions in the popular mind: that an act of violence isn’t being treated seriously unless it is designated a “hate crime,” and that inclusion in the list of categories is itself a mark of respect. “Black lives matter” because crimes motivated by racism are hate crimes; therefore, the thinking goes, attacks on the police must be declared a hate crime to send the symbolic message that “blue lives matter.” By that logic, every crime of violence would have to be declared a hate crime.

Police need to be protected, and those who attack them must be punished severely. But the issue is safety, not “hate.”

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

She regrets her visit almost immediately. Nobody lucky to be alive is paying attention to all that she misses.

She can’t bear to watch any longer, she tells the stage manager.

“I can’t. I can’t go on. It goes so fast. We don’t have time to look at one another.

“I didn’t realize. So all that was going on and we never noticed. Take me back – up the hill – to my grave.

But first: Wait! One more look.

“Good-by, Good-by, world. Good-by, Grover’s Corners ... Mama and Papa.

Good-by to clocks ticking ... and Mama’s sunflowers. And food and coffee.

“And new-ironed dresses and hot baths ... and sleeping and waking up.

Oh, earth, you’re too wonderful for anybody to realize you.”

If ever there were a time when I needed this reminder, it is now. I’ve let too many hours of my days be consumed with fear and loathing for the presidential campaign of Donald Trump, and all the angriness it fuels.

The best antidote, the only one I can figure, is to see all that is good around me.

I’ve never before worn lavender polish on my fingernails. It’s a bit risky at my age, or so the magazines say. Best to stay with neutral colors to avoid drawing attention to my aging hands. As if people are fooled by the lines on my face, maybe, or don’t see the little gray hairs escaping the dye job like sea oats waving “hi.”

This week, it occurred to me anew that there are consequences to thinking that wearing “Grape Gatsby” nail polish is a brushstroke too far. That kind of thinking creeps up on you like Georgia kudzu. Next thing you know, you’re telling your girlfriends over

coffee that maybe you’ll plan ahead and move now to a house with no stairs.

It’s harvest time in our garden, which my husband tends as if our meals depend on it. He walks through the door, our dog’s tail flapping against his pant leg, and lifts up yet another basket full of the biggest, brightest tomatoes.

“Look!” he yells, but all I see is that big smile of his. That’s what I want to remember.

I stack the tomatoes in a bowl we’ve had since the day we married and slide it next to the batch of wildflowers I picked from my garden that morning. They swoop and sway in the hand-painted pitcher that belonged to my parents from the day they were married.

It’s enough, these small moments, this joy all around me. As long as I can see them, the days are good, and the year is a blessing.

“I love you all, everything,” Emily said after she had died. “I can’t look at everything hard enough.”

The U.S. recovery is not what it seems

Economists regularly point out that the U.S. has recovered from the recession of 2007 to 2009 much more strongly than other countries. If only it were so.

True, the U.S. stands out if one looks only at gross domestic product.

For example, The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development pointed out recently that U.S. GDP has expanded by more than 10 percent in inflation-adjusted terms since the end of 2007, while the euro area and Japan economy have stagnated.

It’s important, however, to take ac-

count of population growth. The U.S. population is growing much faster than those of either Europe or Japan, so its economy should almost automatically grow faster as well. Yet what really matters for individuals is how much output per person has changed.

The U.S. is still ahead, but not by much. Even in the euro area, cumulative growth in per capita, inflation-adjusted GDP falls only about 4 percentage points short of the U.S. And within the euro area, Germany actually exceeded the U.S. by 5 percentage points.

If we focus on jobs, the U.S. looks worse. The fraction of those aged 25 to 54 with a job was about 2.5 percentage points lower in 2015 than in 2007. This

shortfall is roughly the same as in the euro area.

In the U.K. and Japan, however, the prime-aged employment-to-population ratio already exceeds its 2007 level – by about one and two percentage points, respectively. In Japan, the level is about five percentage points higher than in the U.S. There are some useful lessons here.

For one, if the U.S. recovery actually hasn’t been so comparatively strong, then it’s hard to argue that the Federal Reserve’s unconventional monetary-policy measures – such as large-scale asset purchases – have been more effective than those of other central banks.

Perhaps the Fed should be more

cautious in regarding asset purchases as a substitute for more conventional monetary policy tools.

Second, there’s clearly more the U.S. can do to get people back to work.

The prime-age employment data suggest that it has done about as well since 2007 as the euro area, a region that includes high-unemployment economies such as Spain and Greece.

That can’t be described as a desirable outcome.

The annual cicadas have barely begun their end-of-summer evensong in the trees behind our house, but children in the neighborhood already are headed back to school.

Twice this week, I’ve had to pull my car to a stop and wait until the school bus door opens with the familiar wheeze, releasing the rhythmic stomp of little feet marching down to the pavement.

Last year at this time, I often met this delay in my busy day with the fingertip drum of impatience on my steering wheel. This, however, is no ordinary year, and rather than tap my fingers, I decide to fan them and admire the fresh coat of lavender nail polish. A scandalous nail color for me.

More on that in a moment.

Last week, my husband and I made our annual trek to Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario, Canada, for the Shaw Festival, named for George Bernard Shaw.

We stayed at the same B&B, walking to each of the three plays we chose to see. The last one we saw – “Our Town” – shook me awake, much the way it surely has for countless others since its debut in 1938, when its playwright, Thornton Wilder, won the Pulitzer Prize for drama.

Mission trip helps teenagers grow in faith DAILY CHRONICLE More than 120 teenagers and 28 adults traveled to Rochester, New York, the week of July 24 to 30 through Life Missions, a ministry of Sycamore United Methodist Church.

The youth and adults served at people’s homes, doing projects such as painting the interior and exterior, fixing stairs and completing minor repairs to porches and decks. Along with that work, they built stronger relationships with their work group, with the residents of the homes they worked on, as well as with God.

The goal of Life Missions, as stated

by SUMC Youth Director Joe Munro, who started the program eight years ago, is for youth to grow on their journey with God. “We want to help them to become stronger and bolder in their faith,” Munro said in a news release. “The goal of Life Missions is to build a community of brothers and sisters in Christ with youth throughout DeKalb County where they can have a network of people to grow in fellowship with and lean on as they navigate through their teenage years.

“These trips are a nine-month com-

mitment and when done, they have learned to trust more in each other, in the adults with them and with God,” he said in the release.

“When I first signed up to go on the trip, I did it for the social aspect,” Cameron Carani, a freshman at Sycamore High School, said in the release.

“Since going, I feel I am truly devoted to God and the trip was life-changing.”

He said he made new connections and now has a strong network to lean on.

Sycamore High School graduate Natilee Morey went on her third trip this year. As she prepares to leave for college in a few weeks, she said that

since her first trip she is “more confident in herself, her relationship with God and with other people. She now is better able to express herself since that first trip, and Life Missions has given her leadership skills that will last a lifetime.”

Life Missions members will share their experiences from the trip at services at 5 p.m. Saturday and 8:30 and 10 a.m. Sunday at Sycamore United Methodist, 160 Johnson Ave. The services are open to the public, and all are encouraged to attend. There will be a picnic after the 10 a.m. service.

Attendees should bring a dish to pass.

The title of these periodic events is taken from a book she is working on titled “Fresh: New Ways of Experiencing God.” The theme of the evening is “The Surprising Power of ?????.”

Part of the inspiration for this theme came from a newspaper article in the Daily Chronicle last fall. The presentation will weave together the story of the daughter of a German immigrant named Elsa, an unexpected car deal, a stolen dress and more.

In simple terms, he is the commander of Illinois for the Forty and Eight, a nonprofit national veterans organization.

Originally, the Forty and Eight was established in 1920 by members of the American Legion. The founders based the organization on their experiences in World War I. The box

The Federated Church in Sycamore hosted its annual “filling of the backpacks” Aug. 7.

Members of the congregation gathered after worship to lend helping hands to their School Supply Pantry Project. Now in its 14th year, each August this project provides new back-to-school backpacks filled with school supplies to children who are served by the Hope Haven homeless shelter in DeKalb, Safe Passage domestic violence shelter in DeKalb, the Department of Children and Family Services of DeKalb County and other local groups as needed. Various Photo provided church activities provide funding and Sharon McKee and Sherry Jones, organizers of Federated Church’s annual School Supply donations for this ongoing project.

Pantry backpack-filling event, double-check backpacks before distribution. More than Backpacks, pens, pencils, crayons, scissors, notebooks, paper and other 200 backpacks were filled this year and will be given to local children in need.

supplies were organized by type and grade level on tables in the church’s fellowship hall.

Members were given a supply list for a specific grade level, and they walked an assembly line, collecting the needed items and putting them in the backpacks as they went.

When full, the backpacks were double-checked, then sorted by the color-coded lists and stacked in groups by agency to await distribution.

Congregation members enjoy this annual event. It is a way to contribute to their community, and it also is a time of fun and fellowship. It usually takes about an hour to fill all the backpacks on Sunday morning thanks to the organization and setup the night before. This year, more than 200 backpacks will go to local area children in need of assistance.

DeKALB – Northern Illinois safety Brandon Mayes took over the jersey number of former teammate Marlon Moore.

Not only is he now No. 2, Mayes also is taking over the graduated Moore’s role as the elder of the Huskie safeties this season.

“You have to come out here ready to practice because the group feeds off your energy,” Mayes said. “You’ve been here the longest, you have to be the most energized, you got to know what you’re doing. It’s a bigger role, but with it comes more responsibility.”

Now a redshirt junior, Mayes has played in all 28 games since being a redshirt freshman – including starting all 14 contests in 2015. He finished the year with 87 tackles and three interceptions, both of which were thirdbest on the team. Now he becomes the standout safety for the Huskies with the loss of Moore, who was first in the team in tackles (99) in 2014 and second (105) last season.

“It’s kind of a funny transition to go from a younger guy to an old guy, and sometimes you have to know when to speak and when not to speak,” Northern Illinois first-year defensive coordinator Kevin Kane said. “I think he’s learned that. At the same time, when guys ask questions, he knows all the answers, which is good – and he better. I think he’s learned our playbook and knows what we expect, which helps the safeties.”

One benefit of Moore’s graduation, however, was it opened up Mayes to switch back to No. 2 – his number during his playing days at Aurora Christian, where he helped the Eagles win back-to-back Class 3A state titles in 2011-12.

“It was my number back in the day in high school and I was wanting for a minute (earlier in his NIU career) but Marlon took it so I just stayed with 24,” Mayes laughed about Moore switching from No. 21 to No. 2 in 2014.

working on little things and working on being “2 percent better” than the previous day. More than likely, the safety next to Mayes will be Mycial Allen, a redshirt junior from Detroit who played in all 14 games last year, finishing with 25 tackles and two interceptions.

Allen was out during Thursday’s morning practice, but Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey said it was because of rest.

Taking over with first-team duties Thursday morning was Trayshon Foster, a 5-foot-11, 192-pound redshirt freshman from Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Redshirt freshmen Trequan Smith – 5-foot-11, 187 pounds from Boynton Beach, Florida – and Corey Kennedy – 5-foot-8, 185 pounds from Oswego East – took reps with the second team.

“We got four or five guys that we’re running, and they’re doing a good job,” Northern Illinois new safeties coach Josh Homolka said. “We’re starting to get our legs back under us.

We’re looking crisp and as a secondary, as safeties, we came in in good shape. We’re looking good mentally, we’re looking pretty sharp – we aren’t missing a lot of calls.”

The Huskies will be without redshirt junior safety Jackson Abresch for a while after he suffered an ankle

injury. Carey said he is likely to be out for four to six weeks.

With only six healthy safeties on the roster, the Huskies have moved wide receiver Adam Buirge over to safety this week and the 6-foot, 194-pound redshirt freshman from Minneapolis got plenty of reps during team drills on Thursday.

Buirge also played in the secondary in high school, collecting 142 tackles, nine interceptions, three fumble recoveries and scored five touchdowns on defense during his days at Park Center High School.

“He’s only been out here a couple days and he’s learned it pretty quick,” Kane said. “As more reps and scrimmages come up here in the next few days, we’ll see what he can do. ... He has some tools where he can help us out.”

Brazilian police say Lochte, swimmers were not robbed The ASSOCIATED PRESS RIO DE JANEIRO – Brazilian police said Thursday that swimmer Ryan Lochte and three U.S. teammates were not robbed after a night of partying, and the intoxicated athletes instead vandalized a gas station bathroom and were questioned by armed guards before they paid for the damage and left.

The robbery that was or wasn’t has become the biggest spectacle outside of the Olympic venues in Rio, casting a shadow over American Olympians amid an otherwise remarkable run at the Summer Games. The ordeal was also a blow to Brazilians, who for months endured scrutiny about whether the city could keep athletes and tourists safe given its long history of violence.

“No robbery was committed against these athletes. They were not victims of the crimes they claimed,” Civil Police Chief Fernando Veloso said during a news conference.

The police account came in direct contrast to claims from Lochte’s attorney earlier in the week. The attorney, Jeff Ostrow, had insisted the swimmer had nothing to gain by making up the story. He, as well as Lochte’s father and agent, did not return phone calls seeking comment.

The swimmers could potentially face punishment – probation, suspension, a fine or expulsion – under USA Swimming’s code of conduct. It was not clear if the swimmers would face criminal charges, although police said the athletes could be charged with destruction of property, falsely reporting a crime or both.

Two of the swimmers – Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger – checked in to a flight out of Brazil late Thursday after a judge lifted the order seizing their passports and keeping them in the country.

They had testified about the incident earlier in the day, and Brazilians chanted “liar” as they left the police building.

“They did not lie in their statements. They never lied to journalists.

They only stayed quiet. They did not know what was going on,” attorney Sergio Riera said.

Lochte initially said that he and Conger, Bentz and teammate Jimmy Feigen were held at gunpoint and robbed several hours after the last

Olympic swimming races ended. But police then said they didn’t have evidence to substantiate the claim.

Their passports were ordered seized so the investigation could continue, but Lochte already had left the country.

Although some details in the official account of the story changed on Thursday – police first said no guns were involved, then said two guards pointed weapons at the swimmers – security video confirmed the athletes vandalized parts of the gas station, leading to an encounter with station employees.

The closed-circuit video shows one of the swimmers pulling a sign off a wall and dropping it onto the ground.

A gas station worker arrives, and other workers inspect the damage. Veloso said the swimmers broke a door, a soap dispenser and a mirror.

The swimmers eventually talk with station workers as their cab leaves.

As they talk, two of the swimmers briefly raise their hands and all four sit down on a curb. After a few minutes, the swimmers stand up and appear to exchange something – perhaps cash, as police said – with one of the men.

The footage doesn’t show a weapon, but a police official speaking on the

condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing said two guards pointed guns at the swimmers.

Veloso said the guards did not use excessive force and would have been justified in drawing their weapons because the athletes “were conducting themselves in a violent way.”

A station employee called police, and the guards and employees tried to get the swimmers and the taxi driver to stay until authorities arrived, some even offering to help interpret between English and Portuguese, Veloso said. But he said the athletes wanted to leave, so paid 100 Brazilian reals (about U.S. $33) and $20 in U.S. currency and left.

Conger and Bentz told authorities that the story of the robbery had been fabricated, said the police official who spoke to the AP about the guns. Feigen’s whereabouts – and if he would give a statement – were not known.

Police said the swimmers were unable to provide key details in early interviews, saying they had been intoxicated.

The police official said officers grew suspicious when security video showed the swimmers returning to the athletes village wearing watches, which likely would have been taken in a robbery.

Bolt takes Olympic 200 but comes up short of the record

The Associated Press RIO DE JANEIRO – Usain Bolt tilted his head backward and screamed. He plaintively raised his palms to the sky, tugged hard on his shirt, then tore off the No. 6 sticker stuck to his right hip and threw it to the ground.

It had the look of an unthinkable loss in the Olympic 200 meters.

But there’s only one opponent who can really beat Bolt: Time.

The Jamaican superstar romped in what he says is likely his last Olympic individual race Thursday night, but finished in 19.78 seconds, .59 short of his own world record – the one he said he really wanted to break.

“I’m always happy for the win,” said Bolt, who turns 30 on Sunday, in a postrace interview with NBC. “But I wanted a faster time.”

Hard to argue with a win, though, and Bolt has Olympic gold medal No. 8, and a third straight 200 title to go with the same trifecta in the 100 . His run for No. 9 comes Friday in the 4x100 relays.

All good stuff. But that expression as he crossed the finish line told the

real story.

Bolt was leading before the legs on his 6-foot-5 frame had even powered him through the first curve. The field chased him through a thin mist that started about 30 minutes before the race. Andre de Grasse of Canada finished .24 behind and Christophe Lemaitre of France squeaked out bronze by .003 over Adam Gemili of Britain. You could’ve driven a truck through the gap between first and second place.

Way up ahead, Bolt gave every ounce of effort – no hot-dogging or celebrating early as was his wont in some of his best 100s – his arms pumping hard, face twisted with pain and effort as he hugged the left edge of his lane and approached the line.

He glanced to his left to check out the clock. The time came up, and when Bolt saw it, the reaction looked more like that of someone who’d lost than won.

At least the after-party was great.

What’s new?

With chants of “Usain Bolt, Usain Bolt” ringing out across a mostly full stadium, Bolt paraded around the track with his Jamaican flag while the reggae

music blared in the background. The once-in-a-lifetime sprinter dropped to his knees and kissed the track before giving his iconic “To The World” pose.

His record in his favorite race still stands, though, at 19.19. He set it in 2009 at the world championships, breaking the mark he’d previously set the year before (19.30) when he burst into the Olympics in Beijing.

He’d even suggested he could break the 19-second barrier – who will ever do that now? – in the race Bolt has always called his baby. It’s the sprint he worked on from the very beginning.

His coach wanted him to double in the 400, but that went out the window when he set his first world record in the 100 meters about two months before the Beijing Games.

So, the 100 was his hobby, the 200 was his day job, and when he started talking about goals for the Games, he said immortality was the main one.

“What else can I do to the world to prove I am the greatest? I’m trying to be one of the greatest. Be among Ali and Pele,” Bolt said after the race. “I hope after these games, I will be in that bracket.”

U.S. women’s volleyball fights back to force 5th set, falls short

Serbia’s players cried in triumph after the biggest win in their program’s history. They reached the Rio de Janeiro championship, guaranteeing the country’s first women’s volleyball medal after a 20-25, 25-17, 25-21, 16-25, 15-13 victory over the U.S. Foluke Akinradewo’s teammates took over after the U.S. star was sidelined by an apparent left knee injury late in the opening set after beginning the match brilliantly. She tried to give it a go, but the leg didn’t let her. Akinradewo will undergo tests to determine whether she might play Saturday.

The Americans are knocked out of title contention, and two-time defending Olympic champion Brazil was ousted in a stunning five-setter by China in the quarterfinals. That means Serbia will face a young Chinese squad led by former U.S. coach Jenny Lang Ping, which beat a Netherlands team that is back in the Olympics for the first time

Eaton defends decathlon title

Ashton Eaton defended his Olympic decathlon title, equaling the games record with a surge on the last lap of the 1,500 meters – the last event in the two-day competition.

The 28-year-old American finished with 8,893 points to match the Olympic mark set by Roman Sebrle of the Czech Republic in 2004.

The U.S. will be playing for a sixth consecutive gold medal in women’s basketball after beating France, 86-67, the closest contest of the Rio Games for the Americans.

Diana Taurasi scored 18 points as the U.S. won Thursday night without the services of Sue Bird. The U.S. turned up its defense to make up for not being as crisp offensively after routing opponents by an average of 41.7 points.

The Americans, who won their 48th straight game, will play Spain in the final Saturday.

Bird, the Americans’ starting point guard and team captain, was sidelined with a sprained right knee. The U.S. led only 40-36 at halftime but outscored France 25-8 in the decisive third quarter to finally get some separation from the team that they beat in the 2012 gold medal game.

France will play Serbia for bronze.

Faivre leads way for Indian Creek boys Lyons posts best score for H-BR girls

sports@daily-chronicle.com SHABBONA – The Indian Creek boys golf team enjoyed a 201-206 victory over Hinckley-Big Rock on Thursday at Indian Oaks Country Club.

The Timberwolves were led by junior Louis Faivre’s 44. Faivre struck the ball well, including an estimated 280-yard drive right down the middle of the second fairway. Faivre ended up with par on the hole.

“My putting wasn’t the best today,” Faivre said. “I had a couple of threeputts today. I could have been better.

Other than that, everything worked out.”

Faivre acknowledged that to keep improving, he has to avoid the blowup hole. That sentiment was shared

by Indian Creek coach Dave Olson.

Olson’s squad graduated eight seniors last season. This year, their varsity team is made up entirely of juniors and freshmen.

“We have to cut down on the mistakes,” Olson said. “One of our freshmen shot a 49, but we also had a couple of 54s on the day. If you have a blow-up on a hole, you just need to forget it and move on.”

The Royals were led by Brian Bohanan, who shot a personal-best 48.

Bohanan said that although he didn’t feel any different going into the match, he executed well and had fun.

“The guys at Indian Creek are nice guys and they’re fun to play with,” Bohanan said. “The key is to play smart and have fun, and that’s what I did today.”

Royals senior Taylor Ruh shot a 50, down a stroke from his last round.

Ruh started the day as the No. 1-listed golfer for the Royals.

“I need to work on my short game,” Ruh said. “My chipping was a little rough. You just have to stay positive and hope for the best.”

Royals coach Kyle Donka echoed Ruh’s statements.

“We’re trying to get used to where everyone will play,” Donka said. “We took in a lot of moral victories today.

A lot of our kids are new and they’re getting the hang of basic things like having good golf etiquette. We saw improvement, even if it wasn’t on the scorecard.”

On the girls’ side of the meet, the Royals were victorious by disqualification, because the Timberwolves only have three players. The Royals were led by senior Erin Lyons, who shot a 46. Lyons was disappointed, but not discouraged.

“I have to work on my short game,” Lyons said. “I need to work on my sand wedge and my putting. I added a few strokes to my score today with bad work around the greens.”

The Timberwolves were led by senior Kathrine Nolan. Like Lyons, she was disappointed with her team-leading 49. However, Nolan said she knows what to work on to improve and is taking it all in stride.

“My driver is going in a different zip code right now,” Nolan said with a laugh. “I’m not keeping my head down and I open my hands sometimes. Easy things to fix, but easy things to forget, too.”

The biggest challenge for Timberwolves girls coach Duane Farnsworth is recruitment. Farnsworth does have two girls joining the team next week, though. Having five players means they will be able to post a score and not be disqualified from meets.

“Trying to get the girls who have played before to come back out and finding interested girls who haven’t played before to come out has been challenging,” Farnsworth said. “The biggest thing is to be encouraging and setting goals that we can accomplish.”

The Timberwolves boys team will play Saturday at the Sandwich Invite.

The Timberwolves girls team will play Saturday at the Rock Falls Invite.

Both the girls and boys teams for the Royals will play Friday at Somonauk.

Bryant homers twice; Cubs sweep Brewers The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Kris Bryant came to the plate in the eighth inning a triple shy of the cycle.

The Cubs slugger was trying for a little more.

“My last at-bat I was thinking home run,” Bryant said.

“There aren’t too many games you can hit three home runs.”

Bryant settled for an RBI single to cap a 5-for-5 day with two homers, a double and five RBIs. He helped the Cubs overcome a career-high seven walks by Jake Arrieta to beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 9-6, Thursday for a four-game sweep.

“I don’t feel like this too often,” Bryant said, “This was just one of those days when I was really locked in.”

Bryant tied Colorado’s Nolan Arenado for the NL lead with 30 home runs.

And as the Cubs won for the 18th time in 21 games and improved the best record in the majors to 77-43, the only

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Brandon Bolden bounced his inside run to the right, headed for the pylon. The Patriots running back tucked the ball in his left arm – the wrong one – and lowered his left shoulder, like a cyclist leaning into a turn.

Tracy Porter saw it, and pounced.

The Bears cornerback put both arms around Bolden and yanked the ball out of the crook of his elbow with his left.

The ball fell to the ground at the Bears’ 4; Porter landed, jumped up and fell on it.

The play wasn’t indicative of the final score – 23-22 Patriots – but it was a reminder, after a week of fretting, that the Bears can be competent. Even capable.

After a 22-0 loss the week before, the Bears led the Patriots, 11-0, before they started sprinkling in second-stringers on both offense and defense.

Combine that with a relatively healthy four days at Patriot Place – no Bears player was felled by, say, a pair of scissors – and Week 2 of the preseason was decidedly better for the Bears than the first.

What was so disturbing about the exhibition opener defeat was which players on the Bears were beat. The Bears’ flaws are rooted in their young depth, not necessarily the talent of their best 11 players.

Still, the starting offense had 13 yards on 10 plays against the Broncos. Thursday night, the Bears had 34 yards after two plays and 46 after three.

Jeremy Langford’s eight carries for 55 yards topped the entire team’s rushing total of 17 carries for 48 yards the week before.

After being shut out seven days earlier, the Bears scored three points on Robbie Gould’s 36-yard field goal, six points on Langford’s 5-yard run, and two more on Rob Housler’s 2-yard catch – all within the game’s first 10 minutes.

Jay Cutler completed 8 of 12 passes for 83 yards; it would have been more were it not for Kevin White’s drop.

Receiver Alshon Jeffery’s two catches for 41 yards counted for about half of that, and completed perhaps one of the receiver’s best weeks ever; he dominated the Patriots’ secondary during the week, and did the same with the lights on Thursday.

Facing Rolling Meadows High School alum Jimmy Garoppolo – the surprise starter after, reports said, Tom Brady accidentally sliced his thumb before the game – the Bears were gifted a three-and-out when Aaron Dobson dropped a third-down pass to end the first drive.

The second drive ended on Bolden’s fumble – not that it had been pretty for the Bears. The Patriots marched 81 yards on 12 plays, aided by two poor Porter plays. He took a bad angle on LeGarrette Blount’s 21-yard run and, on the next play, committed a blatant pass interference penalty on receiver Chris Harper for 11 more yards.

By the time the Patriots got the ball back, the Bears were playing backups.

That’s when the Patriots started their comeback, scoring 17 second-quarter points and kicking two more field goals in the third. By the time Garoppolo left with a 23-11 lead, he’d completed 16 of 21 passes for 181 yards and a touchdown to tight end A.J. Derby. The Patriots’ offensive starters began the second half, however, playing against the Bears’ secondand third-team defense.

Perhaps the league’s deepest team, the Patriots predictably were dominant against Bears backups. Upon entering the game with about four minutes left in the first half, Brian Hoyer immediately threw an interception to Cyrus Jones, who jumped Josh Bellamy’s comeback route. The Bears ran four more plays in the half, losing 1 yard.

Before Jordan Howard ran for 11 yards on the last play of the third quarter, Hoyer’s offensive unit had gained 4 yards on six plays during the quarter. Hoyer’s 52-yard completion to Rob Housler early in the fourth quarter set up first-and-goal from the 6, but the Bears came away empty after an incompletion on fourth-and-2.

Judge to Ex-NFL star: Can’t ignore the damage you inflicted

NEW ORLEANS – Former NFL star Darren Sharper was sentenced Thursday to more than 18 years in prison for drugging women to rape them – double the sentence recommended by prosecutors.

One of Sharper’s victims – the only one to speak at his sentencing hearing – rebuffed his display of contrition.

“For the list of people you’ve done this to: Go to hell,” she said. Her name was not given in court, and The Associated Press does not identify victims of sexual abuse by name.

The former New Orleans Saints safety, jailed since February 2014, apologized and appeared chastened by his fall from grace.

“I would like to apologize a thousand times,” the 40-year-old Sharper said. Later, he said, looking down and sighing, “I’m still trying to figure out why I made some of these choices.”

His voice quivered and choked with emotion when he apologized to his parents.

U.S. District Judge Jane Triche Milazzo, in sentencing Sharper, told him she couldn’t understand how he did what he did, because he was college educated and

obviously had grown up “in one of the most loving households.”

“We can never ignore the damage you inflicted on those women and society at large,” she said.

Steelers’ Harrison willing to talk PEDs after NFL’s deadline

PITTSBURGH – Steelers linebacker James Harrison is willing to meet with the NFL to discuss an alleged link to performance-enhancing drugs – but only five days after a deadline the league has imposed while threatening him and three other players with indefinite suspensions.

NFL Players Association attorney Heather McPhee sent a letter to the NFL on Thursday, accusing it of trying to “bully and publicly shame” Harrison without offering evidence beyond a brief mention in TV interview last year that was recanted by the accuser.

Green Bay’s Clay Matthews and Julius Peppers, and free-agent Mike Neal also were threatened with suspensions. It was not immediately known if a similar meeting was being proposed by the union.

Hormone therapy can fight prostate cancer

before and continued during radiation treatment. The other half got that treatment plus two additional years of hormonal therapy.

The results were presented last November. They showed after following the men for an average of 20 years, men who got the long-term treatment had a 40 percent lower risk of the cancer spreading. They also had a 33 percent lower risk of dying from prostate cancer. This was compared with men who were given hormonal therapy for just four months. In men with the highest-risk prostate cancer, long-term hormonal therapy dropped the odds of cancer spreading and death even further.

These results seem to weigh the scale heavily in favor of long-term hormonal therapy. But because of the side effects, the optimal duration of treatment remains an open question.

It’s obviously very important to know the best treatment to prevent a cancer from spreading and causing death. Every patient with cancer wants their doctor to know the answer.

This study demonstrates how tough it can be to get answers. Almost 1,500 people needed to agree to participate in the study, and they needed to continue participating for almost a quarter century. A research team needed to remain intact for that same quarter century. Research requires time and money. It’s the only way to get answers, and we need more answers.

Dear Reader: Androgens are the family of male sex hormones that includes testosterone. When prostate cancer develops, testosterone contributes to the growth and spread of the tumor. Androgen deprivation therapy deprives cancer cells of this stimulation.

Also known as hormonal therapy, it can be a powerful weapon in the fight against prostate cancer.

Hormonal therapy once was reserved for prostate cancer that had spread beyond the prostate. These days, doctors also combine it with radiation to treat locally advanced tumors. Hormonal therapy reduces the chance a tumor will progress or return. And it makes radiation therapy more effective at controlling prostate cancer.

The downsides? Some types of hormonal therapy have known cardiovascular risks.

The treatment also causes weight gain and bone loss.

Still, studies consistently have shown the longer a man receives hormonal therapy, the better his chances for extended survival.

Results from a recent clinical trial add to this evidence. They show the survival benefits of long-term hormonal therapy outweigh the risks.

The study was launched in 1992. It enrolled about 1,500 men with cancer confined to the prostate, or cancer that had spread into nearby tissues, such as the bladder.

From the appearance of prostate cancers under the microscope, doctors can estimate which cancers are likely to behave aggressively. The patients in this study had cancers that ranged from just slightly aggressive to highly aggressive.

During the study, half the men got only four months of hormonal therapy. It started

If you are not interested in meeting women on the internet, I won’t force you, even though that’s how many – although not all – relationships start these days.

There are other ways to meet nice women, among them participating in activities you enjoy or volunteering for a cause you believe in. Of course, that necessitates being open to having a relationship with someone and believing you deserve one. From the tone of your letter, I’m not sure you’re there yet. Not having been a good husband the first time is no excuse if you have learned from your mistakes.

Which should he select? South is in six hearts. West leads a trump from a low doubleton. East takes the trick and returns his remaining spade.

How should South continue?

South opened with a weak twobid. North, trusting that his partner would have a good suit at the prevailing unfavorable vulnerability, jumped straight to six spades. This had the side advantage of keeping East out of the auction.

South starts with 10 top tricks: five spades, three hearts and two clubs. It looks so obvious to take the second trump, cash the heart queen (the honor from the shorter side first), and play a heart to dummy’s king. Here, though, when the suit splits 5-1, the contract is in tatters. It doesn’t work that way.

Instead, declarer should play on clubs first. He takes dummy’s two tops. Are they 5-1? If so, South shifts to hearts, hoping for a 3-3 or 4-2 break. Here, though, everyone follows suit. Now declarer ruffs a club (West discards a diamond), cashes his heart queen, plays a heart to the king, ruffs another club, returns to the dummy by ruffing a diamond, and cashes both the last club and the heart ace. South takes five spades, three hearts, three clubs and the diamond ruff.
