How potty training was an epic fail POLL YESTERDAY’S Tons of books explain the art of potty training. Mothers, grandmothers and friends all suggest the method they used. God bless all of them for trying to help me potty-train 2-yearold Hannah Jo. There are certain skills we have to teach our children. They need to know how to feed themselves. Walking and talking are a must. They need to behave and mind their manners by themselves and around others. Learning to read is up there, too.

So far in my parenting journey, most of these skills have been pretty easy. But so far, teaching my daughter to use the toilet has been an epic fail.

This potty training thing is freaking hard!

I wish my daughter would just wake up one day and – “poof!” – she would just know.

From what the books and advice-givers say, Hannah Jo has all the signs of wanting to use the bathroom. She will tell me she needs to have her wee wee changed. She will use the potty seat before going into the tub.

She hides in other rooms to poop. Last, but not least, Hannah Jo will eagerly go to the bathroom at the sitter’s.

So, I ask myself, what is wrong with this equation? I have come to the conclusion that I am the problem. I am lazy! Also, with more reflection, I just want to keep my daughter a baby forever. Then I go back to the fact that I am just lazy.

Diapers are easy. The kids just go, and you don t have to worry about accidents.

Students are headed back to school. Did you have a good summer?

The only thing that is pushing me forth in the epic journey is the fact that diapers are expensive. And, of course, my daughter needs to be potty-trained to enter preschool.

Please understand I don’t leave my child in a filthy diaper. Hannah Jo doesn’t have a diaper rash, nor is her cleanliness a question.

But I feel the guilt with every diaper I change I do. My baby is growing up, and I need to set her free from diapers. Kids need to stop growing so fast. I want to keep her little as long as possible.

How can I motivate myself to get this skill nailed so I don’t feel like a bad mom? I am hoping that when school starts back up I will lose this laid-back approach. I want my daughter to be happy and successful in this world, and I know she needs to be potty-trained to do this.

Eventually, I know I’ll help my child accomplish this skill.

TODAY’S TALKER The beat and heat goes on – NOAA says July hottest on record

WASHINGTON – More federal scientists have confirmed we just sweated through Earth’s hottest month on record.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration calculates that last month’s average global temperature was 62.01 degrees. That beats the old record set in July 2015 by a ninth of a degree and is 1.57 degrees above the 20th century average. July is Earth’s hottest month.

It’s the 15th consecutive global heat record.

Records go back to 1880.

January through July also is beating out 2015 for hottest year-to-date by .34 degrees.

NASA and Japan’s weather office earlier proclaimed July 2016 the hottest on record. The British meteorological office hasn’t calculated the number yet. A University of Alabama Huntsville team that uses satellites, not ground measurements, said it was the second warmest.

D-428 leader says schools will build on last year’s successes

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Superintendent Doug Moeller said schools in DeKalb-based District 428 made academic strides last year that he hopes they will duplicate or surpass in the 2016-17 school year.

Speaking at Wednesday’s seventh annual New Teacher Welcome and State of the District event in the DeKalb High School cafeteria, Moeller touted the professional development time logged by teachers and the district’s commitment to serving all of its students. Classes resume Aug. 24 at District 428 schools.

“Our work this past year, which will continue for the next few years, is with a single goal: That is, improve instructional excellence in the classroom,” Moeller said.

At the event – staged with help from presenting sponsors including the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce, Hy-Vee, First Midwest Bank and KishHealth System – 54 new principals, teachers, school psychologists and other staff were introduced one by one. As a display of the district’s ties to the business and residential community, food was served and the newbies received stuffed goodie bags compliments of the chamber and several of its members.

Moeller said in his address that teachers put in a combined 4,160 hours of professional development over the summer break. Schools such as Malta Elementary have seen capital improvements such as roofing and a new HVAC system, while the entrance of Clinton Rosette Middle School has been repaved. The district won awards for its fiscal ethic, and several local government and higher education partnerships were strengthened last school year, Moeller said.

The goal for this year will be to build on those things, he said.

“Continue the work we’ve done with regards to our Common Core standards ... get our curriculum aligned,” he said.

“And start moving the dial in terms of student achievement.”

Among his boasts was that school likely will start on time Wednesday. The district and DeKalb Classroom Teachers Association, the union that represents 430 teachers and other professionals, emerged from a marathon negotiation session Friday with a tentative deal after weeks of rancor. The teachers were scheduled to vote on the three-year contract proposal at a ratification meeting later Wednesday.

“I’m ecstatic about that,” Moeller said of potentially not facing a teachers strike. “Quite often, [negotiations] come down to the last week or so.”

The only new principal this year is Michele Albano, at DeKalb High School.

She was hired to replace Tamra Ropeter, who parted ways with the district after a Black History Month assembly gone wrong.

Albano said she officially started July 1, but was in the school building a little before then to start getting acclimated.

She was introduced again at the reception, then welcomed her 19 new high school staffers.

“We do a lot of phenomenal things here [at DHS], but there’s a lot of room for growth,” said Albano, who came from Bolingbrook High School, where she was an assistant principal. “We’re really looking to systematize things that really haven’t been systematized.”

The school year will open with a fair amount of other newness in staff additions, infrastructure improvements and academic enhancements. The latter includes the Deaf and Hard of Hearing program’s move back into the district, after years of hopping from school to school in other districts.

The new program will operate at Tyler Elementary School and Clinton Rosette Middle School for the eight students in the program. Christy Meyer, director of special education for the school district, said two teachers and four interpreters were hired for the program.

“This program has moved several times. So I can absolutely respect the questions ... the concerns,” Meyer said.

“I feel the district and NIA (Northwestern Illinois Association) addressed those concerns and have put together a program that is supportive ... and a way to provide more stability for our families who have children who are deaf and hard of hearing.”

Also new for the 2016-17 school year, all DeKalb High School students will be issued Chromebooks as part of the school district’s expansion of its one-toone technology program.

District officials previously said they hoped to use the anticipated additional aid from the state – to the tune of about $2.4 million – to help pay for the extra Google-based laptops. But state Rep. Bob Pritchard, R-Hinckley, cautioned that the check might not be in the mail – for a while.

“That’s the problem we have in Illinois,” said Pritchard, who was appointed to the governor’s bipartisan commission charged with developing equitable plans to overhaul public school funding.

Summer break ends for Sycamore students

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – West Elementary School opened its doors Wednesday morning to welcome about 275 students – and many of their parents – back to school.

The Sycamore school’s First Day Celebration combines back-to-school night activities with the first day, and has been a tradition for years. Jim Weides accompanied his 9-year-old son, Dylan, to the morning event. Dylan Weides said he was excited about fourth grade at West.

“I’m looking forward to gym class because I get to exercise and run around,” he said.

For Jim Weides, the event was a chance to see other parents and support the school, he said. Principal Kristi Crawford said the celebration helps get the school year a strong start.

“It’s an incredible feeling,” she said.

“It unites us a school community and starts kids off with that community support.”

Second-grade teacher Betsy Brantner was unable to attend the first day of school after eye surgery, but made sure her class was in good hands at the start of the year. OBITUARIES ROBERT DEAN SKINNER Robert Dean Skinner, of San Francisco, passed away in DeKalb, on Aug. 15, 2016. He was 81 years old.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Margaret May (Pratt) Skinner and Wilbur “Bill” Skinner; his brother, Wilbur “Billy” Eugene Skinner; and sister, Ellen Margaret (Skinner) Piper and her husband Leo

“Jerry” Piper.

He is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins throughout the United States. His close friend and companion in his later years was Bambi Raven Littlefeather. Bob was never married.

In 1953, Bob graduated from Genoa-Kingston High School in Genoa. He attended the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, from 1953 to 1957. In Nov. 1958, he completed a 14 month course in physical therapy at Charity Hospital in New Orleans.

Two weeks after graduation, on Dec. 1, 1958, he went on active duty with the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) and was commissioned an ensign. From 1958 to 1972, he served as a physical therapist at several duty stations around the U.S., including, New Orleans, Miami, and San Francisco, with temporary duty stations in Philadelphia, PA, Memphis, TN, Mobile, AL, Savannah, GA, Galveston, TX, Los Angeles, CA, and San Pedro, CA, at the two federal narcotics hospitals at Lexington, KY and Ft. Worth, TX, and at the USPHS Leprosarium in Carville, LA. In 1973, he completed a one year USPHS sponsored master’s degree in administration at Northeastern University in San Diego and San Francisco. On Dec. 31, 1980, Bob retired from the USPHS as a captain (06). He made his home his last duty station, San Francisco. In 1985, Bob became a contract employee at Pacific Gas and Electric Company in San Francisco and worked there until he retired in December 1999.

Officials have released few details about what happened to the Wilsons, citing the need to keep information private as the investigation progresses.

“The sheriff’s office has no comments regarding the possible motivation for this crime,” Scott wrote in a news release regarding the autopsy findings Wednesday.

Police found the two bodies Monday evening after a family member called 911 from the home. They found

signs that someone forced their way into the home and that Patricia Wilson’s Chevrolet Impala, with Illinois license plate No. 903 0980, was missing.

Although the crime was reported Monday, a friend of Robert Wilson’s told the Daily Chronicle that Wilson had not gone to church that Sunday, which was unusual. Police have not said how much time they believe passed between when the Wilsons were killed and when they were found.

SYCAMORE – Two days after an elderly woman and her son were found beaten to death inside their home near Sycamore, investigators continued to search for the victims’ missing car.

The DeKalb County Major Case Squad used helicopters Tuesday and Wednesday to search for the white 2010 Chevrolet Impala that the killer or killers are believed to have stolen, DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said.

Illinois State Police helicopters searched over the area Tuesday, and the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System was used Wednesday, Scott said. However, the car had not been found as of Wednesday afternoon.

The sheriff urged anyone with information about the vehicle to call police.

“The vehicle is very important to the investigation,” Scott said.

Preliminary autopsy results released Wednesday confirmed that 85-year-old Patricia A. Wilson and her son, Robert J. Wilson, 64, died of blunt-force trauma. DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller said he could not provide further details about what caused the injuries.

Beginning, and ending, part of County Board return

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A ribbon-cutting for the first-ever county-run business incubator, and a farewell bid to the planning and zoning director, marked the return Wednesday of the County Board from its summer break.

Hours before their full board meeting was held in Sycamore, County Board members met at the Community Outreach Building at the county health complex in DeKalb to cut the ribbon for and officially open the business incubator.

The facility includes 15 offices and 27 cubicles for rent, aimed at helping small business get started – or existing ones to grow – without the often-costly overhead, county officials said.

“We wanted to reach out more to entrepreneurs and small business startups to create as many different types of programs to kind of reduce the intimidation of starting a new business,” said County Board Chairman Mark Pietrowski, D-3rd District. He also is a member of the economic development committee that helped establish the business incubator.

The incubator is one of a few in the country to be run by a government entity.

“This has bipartisan support.

This is something we are very careful to say is not to compete against private industry – this is to support private industry,” Pietrowski said.

A host of local community leaders attended the ribbon-cutting. The area’s elected leaders from various levels of government also were present. They gave kudos to the idea of the work space and what it could do to help bolster entrepreneurs, and praised it as an example of the Republicans’ agenda to thaw what they – led by the governor – have called the icy Illinois business climate.

“This is an open door to so many positive things,” said state Rep. Tom Demmer, R-Dixon. “Incubators are a great place to try to grow businesses, from the local community, that has ties, that has connections.”

After using oversized scissors to cut a red ribbon outside the entrance of the incubator, County Board members made their way to the Gathertorium in Sycamore, where they convened their monthly meeting.

It was Paul Miller’s last full County Board meeting, because the plan-

ning and zoning director is set to leave the post after 20 years. Aug. 31 will be Miller’s last day; he will head north to Dunn County, Wisconsin, where he will be its county manager.

“It’s bittersweet,” Miller said of his departure. “I’m excited about where I’m going, but DeKalb County has been my home for 20 years. A lot of work. A lot of projects that have come through. Some of them were very painful, some of them were very, very satisfying.”

County Board members passed a resolution Wednesday approving Kevin Hickey as the interim director. He previously worked for the sheriff’s department and is being plucked from retirement to head the department starting Sept. 1.

The resolution, passed on a 22-0 vote, allows Hickey to be in the position for up to 599 hours at $48 an hour, or until a permanent replacement is hired, whichever comes first, according to the resolution.

A: Schleissner & Son made silver in Hanau, Germany, in the late 1800s.

Johann Daniel Christian Schleissner started in business about 1817. After his son, Daniel Philipp August Schleissner,

*** Q: My 1928 etching is by Louis Icart, and it’s titled “Salome.” I need to know how much it’s worth so I can sell it.

A: Louis Icart (1880-1950) was a French printmaker, painter and illustrator known for his etchings of fashionably dressed women. The etchings were made on copper plates and reproduced in limited editions. Icart signed the prints in pencil. Beginning in 1926, prints also had a “blind stamp” made by raised seal.

Photographic copies have been made of Icart’s work. Original etchings are much more expensive than the later photographic copies. You need to have an expert look at it to determine its value. *** Q: My grandfather kept wooden matches in a strange vase near his pipe. One side of the colorful vase was a molded version of the mask for Comedy, the other side was the Tragedy mask. It is marked “Wedgwood,” but it doesn’t look like the blue and white pieces with the raised designs I usually see. It has ridges on the bottom. What can you tell me about it?

A: Your grandfather had a Wedgwood majolica match holder, also called a match striker. The ridges were used to strike and light the match. Today’s wooden kitchen matches probably would not light on this striker because they are safety matches, made to be less likely to light from accidental friction. Collectors sometimes confuse match holders with match safes. That name is for a small closed container, usually metal, that held the matches in a pocket or purse. Your majolica match holder was made in the 19th century of majolica. It could sell for $150. ***

Q: Are cereal boxes still a popular collectible? I remember reading about them in the 1960s and seeing a display of flattened boxes for sale at an antiques show.

A: Advertising collectors have been buying round oatmeal boxes since the 1940s. About 1910 to 1930, Kellogg put games and stories to be cut out on the back of boxes. But the rectangular boxes did not attract much attention until Wheaties began picturing athletes on boxes in 1935. It was the “Breakfast of Champions,” and there was a premium that could be cut from the box. By the 1940s, small pin-back buttons picturing comic characters were included with the cereal. Soon, other toys were included and were pictured and mentioned on the box. But it was the 1960s that pushed cereal-box collecting, and soon there were books about it and boxes were sold at most antiques flea markets. Many were destroyed when the Mickey Mouse mask or other toy was cut out. The most expensive today are the full flattened boxes of the 1950s and 1960s. Some sell for over $100. *** Tip: “Liquid silver” jewelry can be cleaned with a soft cotton cloth or rubbed with dry baking powder. Do not use dips. ***

Some of the most popular clocks made after 1944 in the mid-century modern style were designed by an architect and journalist. George Nelson (1908-1986) graduated with a degree in architecture in 1931. He went Europe and wrote magazine articles praising the famous designers and introducing their ideas and his to the U.S. He suggested the open-plan house, storage walls, and family rooms, which all are popular today. Herman Miller, the furniture maker, asked him to become the design director of his company. And that was the beginning of his many still-collected designs, like the “Marshmallow” sofa, “Coconut” chair and the “Ball” clock. Howard Miller Clock Co. produced over 30 different wall clocks based on his idea of an almostround face with geometric additions or subtractions and simple hands. Some were just a group of sticks with colored balls at the end that radiated from the center to form a circle. There was no frame, no glass and no numbers. Each design for a clock was made in many different colors. The “Fan” clock was designed in about 1954. It looks like a folded star-shaped cutout. A yellow Fan clock sold for $3,625 at the Los Angeles Modern auction in Van Nuys, Calif., in May 2016. A black version sold at the same auction brought only $2,250. The original clocks ran on electricity, but you can substitute a battery so no cord will show. Save and replace the old parts before you sell the clock or the value will be less.

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner and Illinois Republicans at the Illinois State Fair on Wednesday all but ignored the party’s bid to reclaim the White House, focusing on term limits, political map-drawing and loads of campaign cash to defeat “machine” Democrats who have a vise grip on the General Assembly.

The party’s presidential nominee, Donald Trump, was mentioned only sparingly during Governor’s Day festivities. Instead, the first-term governor got the crowd to chant “Term limits now!” even though the earliest the question could go to the ballot would be in 2018.

He also extolled the virtues of taking politics out of drawing legislative district maps. That question’s place on the November ballot is being challenged in court by Democrats.

Rauner promised that the GOP would outspend Democrats this fall to pick up seats in the House, where Democrats outnumber Republicans, 71-47, and the Senate, where the spread is 3920.

Autopsy: Chicago 18-year-old died from single shot by police

CHICAGO – An autopsy report released Wednesday shows that the black man shot and killed last month by a Chicago police officer during a chaotic chase died of a single gunshot wound.

The one shot hit 18-year-old Paul O’Neal on the right side of the back, the report said. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office reported that toxicology tests also indicate O’Neal didn’t have drugs in his system when he was shot July 28.

Feds want 10-year sentence in red-light camera bribery case

CHICAGO – Federal prosecutors want a 10-year prison sentence for a former Chicago official convicted of taking bribes to steer $100 million in red-light camera contracts to a Phoenix company.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that federal prosecutors, in a memo filed with the court Monday evening, asked U.S. District Judge Virginia Kendall to consider a 10-year sentence “as a floor” for John Bills. The former second-in-command at Chicago’s Department of Transportation was convicted in January of bribery, conspiracy and extortion.

Bills was accused of accepting envelopes stuffed with cash, along with gifts – including condos in two states and a Mercedes – to help Redflex Traffic Systems obtain contracts in a decadelong scheme.

Former central Illinois fire chief sentenced for theft

BLOOMINGTON – The former fire chief for Allin Township in central Illinois has been sentenced to 120 days in jail for stealing more than $19,000 from the fire district.

Thirty-one-year-old Josh Deterding of Atlanta, Illinois, also will serve 30 months of probation under the sentence a judge handed down Monday.

The Pantagraph reported that Deterding pleaded guilty in April to stealing from the fire district where he worked for 13 years before his 2015 arrest.

Authorities said that for several years, he would transfer money to petty cash accounts where he could access it.

Police said an investigation found that Deterding used the

fire district debit card at ATM machines in bars.

U of I developing models to test power grid protection

URBANA – The University of Illinois said it has received an $18.7 million federal grant to develop a way to test the United States’ response to and recovery from any attack on the country’s electric grid.

The university said Tuesday that the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency awarded the grant.

Tim Yardley, associate director for technology at the Information Trust Institute at Illinois, said the project’s aim is to take a “generational step forward” in proving that the tools being built to deal with such an attack are reliable.

The project will build models of the grid that are first run under normal conditions and then with disturbances that mimic both attacks and natural problems.

NEW YORK – Frustrated with his troubled candidacy, Donald Trump is hinging his presidential hopes on a risky bet: that the fiery populism and freewheeling style that won him the Republican nomination will give him a better shot at the White House than uniting his party and rallying moderate voters.

Trump underscored that conviction Wednesday with a staff overhaul at his campaign’s highest levels, the second shake-up in the past two months. The Republican nominee tapped Stephen Bannon – a combative conservative media executive with no presidential campaign experience – to serve as CEO of his White House bid.

Pollster Kellyanne Conway, who has known Trump for years and gained his trust during her brief tenure working for the businessman, will serve as campaign manager.

The moves are aimed in part at marginalizing campaign chairman Paul Manafort, a longtime Republican operative who pushed Trump to moderate his tone and improve relations with skeptical Republican officials. In breaking with that approach, Trump appears set on finishing the race on his own terms – win or lose.

Manafort’s past work for a pro-Russian Ukrainian political party also has become a potential liability for Trump. The Associated Press reported Wednesday that Manafort helped the party secretly route at least $2.2 million in payments to a pair of prominent Washington lobbying firms.

While Manafort maintains his title, Trump allies made clear that Bannon will oversee the campaign staff and operations.

“He believes he should stay true to what got him this far,” said David Bossie, the leader of a pro-Trump super PAC. “It’s essentially, ‘Dance with the one who brung ya.’ ” Rarely do presidential campaigns undergo this level of tumult at this stage of the general election. Wednesday’s announcements come fewer than three months before Trump’s Election Day faceoff with Democrat Hillary Clinton, and roughly six weeks before early voting begins.

Conway downplayed the notion of internal dissent at campaign headquarters at Trump Tower, telling the AP that the staffing changes are “an expansion at a critical time in the home stretch.”

In the aftermath of the shake-up, Trump spent the day in New York. He attended a breakfast fundraiser with Manafort, who subsequently led two staff meetings, and later convened a security roundtable attended by allies, including former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. While Trump’s first staff shuffle in June was driven by concerns among top Republicans, as well as the candidate’s children, this latest upheaval appears to come directly from the businessman. Republicans said he’s grown angry with his sinking poll numbers and frustrated that many GOP lawmakers remain skeptical of his candidacy.

Several Republicans discussed the personnel changes on the condition of anonymity, because they were not authorized to publicly disclose internal thinking.

Trump vented his frustration during a weekend fundraiser in the Hamptons. He was encouraged to bring Bannon on board by Rebekah Mercer, a member of a prominent GOP fundraising family that has close ties to the Breitbart executive. Conway also has ties to the Mercers.

Bannon has circled Trump’s orbit in recent years and has been in touch with aides to the billionaire throughout the campaign. Bannon’s website has been fiercely loyal to Trump for months and sharply critical of Republican leaders, including House Speaker Paul Ryan.

Disaster can bring a sense of life in limbo Above Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the sun struggled Monday to reclaim its rightful place in the summer sky, brightness alternating with persistent clouds. It was a mixed horizon for a mixed day, as south Louisiana grasped for the comfort of weekday routines in the aftermath of a national disaster.

That’s what we have ahead of us in the coming weeks and months – hints of returning normality here and there, occasionally assuring us with the pleasant illusion that this weekend’s news was just a nightmare, shrugged off with the return of dawn. And yet, beneath the basic rhythms of daily life, there remains the stark and vivid evidence of a tragedy still in motion, as rising waters threaten even more homes, businesses and lives.

One of the eeriest moments came Sunday, when many residents discovered their smartphones knocked out of commission by the flood.

The downed communications posed a safety hazard, limiting critical connections between those who needed help and those who could give it.

Even for those of us out of harm’s way, our silent cellphones compounded a sense of isolation that can visit anyone near ground zero of a disaster. There was a feeling of life in limbo, our concerns cut off abruptly from the wider world. It is our blessing and our curse that communication connects us umbilically to the rest of the planet each minute of the day; and when that link is lost, the hours can seem untethered, adrift in an alternate universe.

Away from the chatter of other souls, if only for an afternoon, we sensed a pregnant pause – a quiet, in other words, that gave birth to something else. What Sunday’s silence yielded, perhaps, was perspective – a sudden sense that the anxieties of last week, before the waters swallowed up so much we held dear, were small by comparison with the weight of what we now bear.

Looking out from south Louisiana right now can feel like peering into an inverted telescope, a view that makes so many of the world’s worries seem tiny and trivial. We have no patience at the moment for petty presidential politics, preening celebrity scandals, or Olympic doping disputes.

That’s the grim gift of this slow-moving catastrophe – that it has reminded us what really matters: faith, family, home, and community.

They are all worth fighting for, as we begin the long march to regain what’s been lost.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Teachers, politicians, everyone wants more

To the Editor: A couple of things caught my eye while reading Saturday’s edition of the Daily Chronicle.

The first was Sen. Dick Durbin demanding that Blue Cross Blue Shield reduce costs and be more competitive. I almost fell out of my chair. The senator has voted to raise taxes and increase the size of government time and time again.

He has voted to increase regulations that stifle growth and innovation in the private sector. What a hypocrite!

The second is about the school District 428 teacher contract negotiations. Neither side should reference the children. This is a contract negotiation – it’s about wages, benefits and working conditions.

Bringing the children into this, in my opinion, is using them as human shields to get what you want. Pretty low.

Teachers also should realize that they are not alone in working a long and stressful day. Talk to anyone who works in the private sector about their day – just don’t compare wages and benefits, or else you risk losing their sympathy.

My wife and I are retired living on a pension (although not as good as a teacher’s) and Social Security. The pension is fixed. Social Security didn’t give us a raise in 2016. We are going to get a fraction of a percent raise in 2017. Our taxes are sure to go up. Even with the pittance of an increase, we will have to do with less.

I get it, we all want more. So, teachers, can’t you wait till the economy is better? The rising property values that will result with a rising economy will justify the tax increase that surely will come. Can you tone down your demands and wait with the rest of us for more prosperous days? Or, are you going to say to us that it is “too bad for you”?

Teachers’ work is not a ‘choice’

To the Editor: On Aug. 12, Editor Eric Olson wrote about the state of teacher negotiations in DeKalb District 428.

As part of his editorial, Olson commented on the brevity of a DeKalb teacher’s work day by stating, “While it might

be true that teachers go home and work some more on some days, that’s a choice.”

Mr. Olson, it is not a “choice” for teachers to work “some more on some days,” but rather the norm. Teachers must plan for instruction on a daily basis, and that planning encompasses meeting the learning needs of children with vastly different skills.

A typical teacher in DeKalb works with a diverse student body that encompasses many languages, academic levels, learning styles and individual needs. Every single day of the school year, teachers take hours to prepare for instruction. Every day, teachers select books, grade papers, conduct or prepare for parent conferences, communicate with families, participate in special education IEP meetings, attend professional development sessions, or otherwise do parts of their jobs that only begin after the children have gone home at the end of their school day.

Teachers typically are dedicated to their profession and the opportunities they have to help students grow academically, socially and in all the areas of their talents. To do the work of teaching requires educators to extend themselves not only during their contractually mandated work day but also after school, in the evening, and on weekends.

It is on these “off the clock” times when teachers go about all the things that happen behind the scenes in order for instruction to occur. The comment that it is a “choice” to spend time working beyond the school day reveals a lack of understanding of just what goes into teaching. As a retiree, I am so grateful to the many fine teachers that my three children had the opportunity to work with during their school days at St. Mary’s in DeKalb and at DeKalb High School.

As a retired administrator who had the privilege to work for 17 years in District 428, I also want to thank the staff of the district for all the efforts and sacrifices they make on behalf of the children of our community.

These professionals do not have a “choice” when it comes to meeting the needs of children, and I am grateful to them for the work that they do.

Madigan makes millions in conflict of interest Chicago homeowners are getting crushed by huge tax hikes. Many now find their property tax bills to be higher than their home mortgages payments.

In Cook County and across Illinois, we have the highest property taxes in the country, with our average property tax bill nearly double the national average.

Our tax policies have been set

by House Speaker Mike Madigan, D-Chicago, and the Democratic legislative majority he has controlled in Springfield for more than 30 years.

Madigan said in a 1986 interview with Chicago Magazine that “Political people are driven by certain interests, quite often a personal self-interest.”

No surprise, then, that Madigan owns a law firm in the property tax appeals business. Madigan calls owners of large commercial properties around Chicago to retain his law firm to get their property taxes reduced through an appeals process. Madigan makes his money by appealing high taxes, negotiating reductions and taking a percentage of the cut. Whom does he negotiate with? Cook County Assessor and

VIEWS Margo McDermed Cook County Democratic Chairman Joe Berrios, who just happens to be an underling to State Democratic Party Chairman Mike Madigan.

What a conveniently rigged arrangement.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Madigan’s law firm scored $58 million in tax cuts for well-connected Chicago and suburban Cook County property owners from 2003 to 2013.

Madigan saved $3.4 million for the Citicorp Center at 500 W. Madison and cut the Prudential Plaza taxes about $6 million.

Madigan is not alone in this rigged appeals game. Long serving Chicago Alderman Ed Burke is also in the business of property tax appeals.

He famously saved Donald Trump $7 million in property taxes on the Trump Tower.

Chicago Public Schools desperately need that money to pay their

teachers. So where does CPS turn to pick up the tens of millions that Madigan and Burke take from the Chicago tax base?

To pay for schools and local government, the cost has to shift to other property owners – to you, your neighbors, to working families and small store owners around the city.

Madigan and Burke make millions from a property tax appeals scheme that’s rigged to lower property tax payments for downtown Chicago office buildings, while raising property taxes to record levels for homeowners and small businesses across Cook County.

Insiders and wealthy office owners pay less in taxes; and Madigan, Burke and others become millionaires. And Chicago area homeowners?

They are cut out of this sweetheart deal and forced to pay higher property taxes. Fair? Hardly. It’s a fundamental conflict of interest.

And yet voters continue to elect Madigan and Burke to office.

To fix this rigged system, we need term limits and a true property tax freeze, not one of the fake proposals Madigan recently put to a vote in

Springfield. He manipulated sham votes to claim the mantle of wanting a property tax freeze, all the while ensuring the tax appeals game and higher property taxes continue unchanged.

An honest property tax freeze prevents increases that then get appealed. It shuts down the game and relieves the crushing pressure on Chicago property taxpayers.

To bring true property tax relief to our homeowners and small businesses, we need a freeze, combined with elimination of mandates from Madigan’s Democratic Party majority in Springfield that force schools and local governments to spend more.

We need to take control of government costs away from Madigan, and give that power to the people of Illinois instead. Term limits and local control are the key to fix our property tax problem, and end once and for all the conflict of interest between our powerful politicians and our taxpayers.

Let the public see the Milwaukee police video already Nothing can justify the violence and rioting that has taken place in Milwaukee in the past 48 hours, not even a police killing of an innocent person – which, according to the mayor and police chief, is not what happened in that city Saturday afternoon.

Precisely because they make that claim, the state should release the video they say supports their view.

A traffic stop in Milwaukee turned deadly when a man fled the scene.

Based on footage from the officer’s body camera, the police chief asserts that the officer’s decision to shoot

“certainly appeared to be within lawful bounds.”

He noted that “the individual did turn toward the officer with a firearm in his hand.” The mayor said a still photo from the video shows the suspect carrying a gun.

If what they say is true, then releasing the video may help calm tensions in the city.

But their word will not be enough to begin repairing the distrust of police that led to the riots. By strongly implying that the video exonerates the officer, the city now has a responsibility to see that it’s released publicly.

The decision of whether to release it, however, is out of the city’s hands.

A state law designed to enhance police accountability mandates that any death occurring in police custody be investigated by an independent state agency. That makes sense, and that agency is now in possession of the video.

The agency should release the video. It’s possible, of course, that an inflammatory video will only make a bad situation worse.

It’s also true that, because police body cameras often don’t capture the full context of an incident, such footage can be deceptive.

All the same, once a police department has decided to equip its officers with cameras, it cannot be surprised when the public demands to see the footage.

This is especially so when police and public officials make claims about what the footage does or does not show in the midst of a public-safety emergency.

Strict rules about such footage are necessary to protect the due-process rights of both citizens and officers.

But when releasing a video could save lives and property, it’s hard to make the case for keeping it hidden.

The Huskies are gearing up for the 2016 season without their best player, junior midfielder Lauren Gierman, who tore her ACL in the spring after being named first-team all-Mid-American Conference in 2015. However, the Huskies have plenty of returners from last year’s team and have regrouped since the loss of their star player.

“They bounced back really well,” NIU coach John Ross said. “I think, obviously, the returners were there when it happened. I think there’s a day or two of, ‘Oh, Lauren’s down.’

Then they get through that and they

know they have to take a little bit of that rope that she was holding onto.

They all have to take a little piece of that to give a little more. They did that with their offseason training, and they came back in a really good place right now.”

Gierman totaled 15 points for the Huskies last year (six goals, three assists), and while the six-month recovery period for her ACL injury will happen during the season, Ross said it’s unlikely that she’ll play this year – instead, she will probably redshirt.

While the Huskies take a hit offensively with her loss, sophomore forward Taylor Sarver (two goals in 16 starts) was named to the conference’s all-freshman team – Ross called her one of the fastest players in the MAC – and Ross has praised the play of freshman forward Natalie

Yass, saying she’s made jaw-dropping plays in practice.

“She’s very dynamic, attacking-wise,” Ross said of Yass. “She strikes the ball well and applies pressure.”

Defensively, the Huskies return senior Alex Elias (team-high 1,627 minutes last year), junior Natalia Pena (13 starts) and junior goalkeeper Amy Annala, who started all 14 games she played.

“We’re going to be able to defend well and take some chances going forward and cause some trouble for the opponents we play,” Ross said.

NIU is looking for its first winning season since 2008, when it went 9-6-5 overall and 5-4-2 in the MAC. While the Huskies finished 3-12-3 overall and 2-5-2 in conference play last year, they had a strong end of

Hildreth returns with chance at MAC crown

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Coming down the home stretch of the Mid-American Conference women’s cross country championship meet last year, Northern Illinois runner Kelsey Hildreth had a shot to win it.

Instead, she took second – only three seconds from winning the conference title – then suffered a calf injury that kept her out of the NCAA Midwest Regional race.

“She’s put in a lot of miles this summer,” Myers said of Hildreth, who finished with a time of 20 minutes, 42.79 seconds in the 6,000-meter race. “My expectations are that she wins the MAC in cross country this year and goes on to be the first All-American in the program’s history, as well – which is a testament to the heart that was placed in such a small body with her.”

Hildreth, who already holds almost every record for NIU women’s cross country, was a major reason the Huskies finished seventh as a team –

the best in program history. Myers, who came to NIU from Purdue, said he was trying to instill a championship culture and to make the Huskies a program that could contend for the MAC championship.

While they finished seventh as a team, they were only 13 points from fifth-place Buffalo.

“It was something to get the excitement going,” Myers said. “Seventh is seventh, you can only be so proud of that, but any progress is good progress. The nice thing was it was with the same girls here that were getting ninth, 10th, or 11th. We’re doing something right.”

CLEVELAND – Adam Eaton’s ninth-inning grand slam off closer Cody Allen capped a five-run rally and lifted the White Sox to a 10-7 win over the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday night.

Cleveland was two outs from increasing its AL Central lead over second-place Detroit to seven games, but the Sox rallied to break a seven-game losing streak against the Indians.

With the Indians leading 7-5, Allen (2-5) retired the first hitter before the Sox loaded the bases on infield singles by Todd Frazier and J.B. Shuck, and a walk to Tim Anderson.

CHICAGO – Jorge Soler hit a threerun homer during a five-run first inning, Jon Lester pitched into the seventh and the Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 6-1, on Wednesday night for their 17th win in 20 games.

Soler’s shot capped the inning after RBI singles by Ben Zobrist and Addison Russell.

Lester (13-4) got his fourth straight win, giving up one run and three hits in 62/3 innings while striking out seven.

He hasn’t lost since July 3.

Brewers starter Jimmy Nelson (613) walked leadoff batter Dexter Fowler then hit Kris Bryant with a pitch to begin the first.

Soler’s homer on a 2-2 pitch was a convincing smash that landed just under the videoboard atop of the left-center field stands.

U.S. routs Argentina, moves into semifinals

RIO DE JANEIRO – The nail-biters ended for the U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team.

So did a golden era of international basketball.

Emphatically stopping a stretch of three straight close games, the Americans advanced to the semifinals by sprinting past Manu Ginobili and Argentina, 105-78, on Wednesday night.

In front of a chanting, flag-waving crowd of Argentines who came to throw a raucous farewell party for their Golden Generation, the Americans delivered their most complete performance in Rio. “What a remarkable run by Argentina and so we knew we had to match that energy tonight. I thought we did,” U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski said.

Turning a slow start into an early ending with a 27-2 run in the first half, the Americans put away one old rival and set up a meeting with another. They will play Spain on Friday in a rematch of the past two gold-medal games.

Kevin Durant scored 27 points for the Americans, who had played three straight close games for the first time under Krzyzewski, setting off a round of questions at home and in Rio de Janeiro about what was wrong with them.

The answer might be nothing. At least there wasn’t against Argentina.

“We wanted to come out and our whole thing was dominating,” forward Carmelo Anthony said.

The Americans eliminated Argentina for the third straight Olympics, this time ending not only a tournament run for the Argentines but also a couple careers.

Ginobili, 39, and longtime 36-yearold teammate Andres Nocioni retired from international competition after the game, 12 years after winning gold in Athens.

“We had a chance to grow up together and do some good things, win some games together. It was fun. It’s a lot of years,” said Luis Scola, who also is 36 but plans to keep playing.

Ginobili scored 14 points in his final game in Argentina’s blue and white, tearing up after receiving applause from his fans and warm wishes from his opponents.

“They congratulated me, and I’m very proud of their words,” Ginobili said. “They were very kind, very respectful and when legends of the game showed their respect, it has an extra value.”

The Americans have won 23 straight in the Olympics since Argentina beat them in the 2004 semifinals,

and this was how they usually do it: too much firepower, too much defense, and way too much talent.

It took a little while to get going, as Argentina opened a 10-point lead. The Argentines made nine of their first 10 shots inside the arc and led 19-9 when Nocioni drilled a 3-pointer. But the Americans finished the first period with a 16-2 run, getting the final six points from DeMarcus Cousins, to take a 25-21 edge to the second.

Three-point plays by Cousins and Jimmy Butler around Durant’s 3-pointer in an 11-0 start to the second made it 36-21 before Facundo Campazzo stopped the onslaught with a threepoint play.

Algonquin native Jager realizes dream with silver medal

RIO DE JANEIRO – Evan Jager knew in the final 100 meters he didn’t have a chance to win gold at the Rio Olympics.

Jager entered the final 100 meters of the 3,000-meter men’s steeplechase on Wednesday 25 meters behind Conseslus Kipruto. The Kenyan looked back at Jager, then showboated and played up to the Olympic Stadium crowd.

But that didn’t matter to Jager. He knew he was about to make history.

The Jacobs High School grad and Algonquin native came across the line with a time of 8:04.28, screaming and fist pumping his way through the last 10 meters.

His medal from the Rio Olympics: silver, the first U.S. man to medal in the event in 32 years.

“It was a lot of years of hard work and day dreaming about the moment all coming true,” Jager said. “It all just happens in five seconds time.”

Jager’s medal hopes never were in doubt from the start. Despite starting on the outside, the Portland resident quickly worked his way into the top five. He crossed the 600-meter mark in second.

Then he made his move, passing

Kipruto to take the lead despite plans not to set the pace.

“I wasn’t planning on taking the lead from that far out but in the moment it seemed like something I needed to do,” Jager said.

Jager led the next four laps as he, Kipruto and Ezekiel Kemboi built up a 50-meter gap to fourth. Kipruto sprinted by him at the start of the final lap, bringing Kemboi along with him.

But Jager found speed in the last 200 meters. He passed Kemboi, jumped over the second-to-last barrier and sought to close the gap. Jager ran out of room to catch Kipruto, but celebrated as if he had won.

“I didn’t know that I had a medal wrapped up until about 100 meters to go,” Jager said. “As soon as I got over the last barrier, I could fully enjoy it.”

His second-place finish put the United States on the podium for the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase for the first time since Brian Diemer took bronze in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

Since that medal, Kenya has won 18 medals in the event, including eight straight gold medals.

“Since I started steeplechase, it’s been one of my goals to be in the mix with the Kenyans and beat some of

them on the day at the championship races,” Jager said.

The result was no surprise for Jager.

He finished sixth in the 2012 London Olympics and scored a second, third and fourth place finish in the 2014 and 2015 Diamond League seasons. He entered the race Wednesday as one of the favorites to medal.

But his calmness surprised him.

Jager said he stressed before the 2012 U.S. Olympic trials, but this time he and his teammates stayed more relaxed, even as the race started and his chance at history arrived.

“Myself and a bunch of teammates, we didn’t feel the pressure of it being an Olympic year,” Jager said. “Somehow, I was able to carry that all the way here.”

Seconds after crossing the line, Jager paraded around the stadium, a U.S. flag in tow. He posed for photos as the sparse crowd cheered him and the Kenyans.

His smile and joy beamed as he took a victory lap.

“I know how big of an achievement it is,” Jager said. “But I don’t know if it’s hit me yet.”

Walsh Jennings-Ross rally to take bronze medal

Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross have won the beach volleyball bronze medal, coming back after losing the first set to beat the host Brazilians at Copacabana.

The win comes less than 24 hours after Walsh Jennings lost on the Olympic beach for the first time in 27 matches over four Summer Games.

Walsh Jennings, a three-time gold medalist, delivered a pair of blocks for the final two points Wednesday night to win 17-21, 21-17, 15-9.

Rollins leads U.S. sweep of 100-meter hurdles

American Brianna Rollins started out fast and never looked back.

Rollins lead the U.S. sweep of the 100-meter hurdles at the Rio Games on Wednesday night, winning with 12.48 seconds.

Although Rollins was unreachable, it came down to hundredths of seconds for the other two medals.

Nia Ali had silver with 12.59 and Kristi Castlin had 12.61 for bronze.

The United States had such strength in depth this year that they could leave world record holder Kendra Harrison at home and still sweep the race.

The U.S. Olympic Committee said two American swimmers were taken off their flight from Brazil by local authorities amid an investigation into a reported robbery involving Ryan Lochte and his teammates.

USOC spokesman Patrick Sandusky said Wednesday night that “Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz were removed from their flight to the United States by Brazilian authorities. We are gathering further information.”

Lochte said he was with Conger, Bentz and another teammate when they were robbed at gunpoint in a taxi as they returned to the athletes village from a party, several hours after the last Olympic swimming events were held. Police have found little evidence so far to support their accounts.

Lochte’s father told The Associated Press that his son had arrived back in the United States.

Playing in the Super Bowl was an achievement in itself for former Bears cornerback Nathan Vasher. When he looks back at the game now, he can see the extra significance the matchup had in the form of the two coaches, Lovie Smith and Tony Dungy, the first African-American head coaches to meet in the Super Bowl.

“The sky’s the limit. If you want to be a coach, keep working on your craft, you can be in the Super Bowl also. Coach Dungy, Lovie, that was a monumental year for minority coaches to be on a stage like that,” Vasher said during training camp. “Just to see that it started with a program like this, it’s huge.”

That program is the NFL’s Bill Walsh Minority Fellowship, held every year to allow former players or current college coaches an internship working with NFL teams in a coaching capacity during training camp.

Vasher took part this summer, returning to Bourbonnais to help coach the Bears’ defensive backs.

“It’s been great,” Vasher said. “The NFL provides a great opportunity with the minority internship to where you can get more guys into coaching, and you get an up-close look at it.”

Vasher worked with Bears assistant defensive backs coach Sam Garnes, who spent two summers in the internship program after a year in NFL Europe. He played for John Fox in New York and has been an assistant coach under Fox since 2010. “[Fox] does a great job with it. It’s great to see him give a lot of opportunities to guys to get their feet wet,” Garnes said. “Sometimes, you learn that it’s not what you want to do. It’s a tough road.”

Fox sees extra value, too, in the networking aspect of the program. In addition to coaching Garnes and then hiring him after his internship, Fox recalled having Ricky Manning as an intern in Denver – Manning was recently hired in Seattle as an assistant DBs coach in March, and Fox gave Pete Carroll a phone call as a reference for his former player and intern.

“It opens up their network and gives them a chance to meet people that can help them get into NFL coaching,” Fox said.

The Bears had four interns through the program during camp, and there were 134 in the league last summer; and while the opportunities are important, the minority coaching hiring numbers are not improving. ESPN’s

Mike Sando recently went in-depth on the issue and pointed out that of the 22 first-time head coaches hired from 2012-16, only one was a minority: Todd Bowles.

Garnes said there’s “no doubt” he pays attention to the minority coaching statistics.

“Anybody who says no, that’s a lie.

Of course we do,” he said. “All you could do is do the best you can with your opportunity. Hopefully, when you get your opportunity, you can bring someone along with you.”

The Rooney Rule, which requires teams to interview at least one minority candidate for head coach, hasn’t translated into more minorities with head-coaching jobs in recent years.

“Can’t force anybody to hire anybody,” Garnes said. “There’s a lot of good people that gives everyone a chance. The Rooney Rule gives people a chance to get in front of somebody, and still no matter what, the best man should get the job. … If people qualified for a job get the job, that’s the only thing that matters.”

Vasher’s ultimate goal is to get into coaching, and before the internship he worked at his alma mater, Texas.

He hasn’t seen minority coaching numbers from Garnes’ perspective yet, but he knows that the Bill Walsh program is valuable.

“I think it’s great,” he said. “Chicago has done an awesome job of getting a great group of coaches from all walks of the country, different programs, putting us all in the same spot where we can learn from each other, even put you in a situation to learn from other coaches and about their journey and how they navigated it.”

Fox referenced Dan Rooney and said, “the more assistants, in my opinion, that you get in the game that know the game, prospered as players in the game, have a good identity of the game, the better.”

The minority internship program is the starting point for those who want to get into coaching, and like Vasher and Garnes, they can look back at that Bears-Colts Super Bowl as a reminder of the potential.

“That was a great experience. To see that, it’s almost like having a black president,” Garnes said. “It’s something you never thought you would see in your lifetime because there’s not that many black head coaches. If you only have four or five and for two of them to make it, that shows that we’re definitely qualified and we’re past that point.”

ne thing Kim Wilson, co-founder and lead singer/ harmonica player of The Fabulous Thunderbirds, can guarantee to his audiences is that they’ll never see the same show twice.

That’s because Wilson improvises every show and never relies on a set list.

“It’s spontaneous,” he explained.

“It keeps things fresh for me and fresh for the audience. People don’t realize I’ve been doing that my whole career. I just call songs out. So I can do whatever I want and whatever the crowd wants. If they want more blues, I give them more blues. If they want more rock ‘n’ roll, I give them that. Nothing is written in stone.”

The Fabulous Thunderbirds, who are best known for their hits “Tuff Enough,” and “Wrap It Up,” will headline Corn Fest at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 28. The

band has been touring extensively over the years, and Wilson said the crowds have been especially fantastic on this tour.

“Everybody really loves this new incarnation of The Fabulous Thunderbirds, probably because they’re all such great musicians,” Wilson, 65, said. “They’re incredible players and there’s just a chemistry here that’s pretty amazing.”

Corn Fest attendees can expect a rocking, high-energy performance that includes the band’s popular hits mixed in with some deep cuts and cover songs.

“There’s no dead air. We go right into the next songs without a break.

That’s how I like to do it. People just want to hear us play,” Wilson said. “A lot of big stars have to play the same songs in the same order every night.

Wilson, who has been playing harmonica and writing songs since he was 17, credits blues great Muddy Waters as one of his biggest influences. He’s recorded with Waters, as well as blues legends B.B. King and Bonnie Raitt. He formed The Fabulous Thunderbirds in October 1974 and has been fronting the band ever since. They originally started as a straight blues band, but have morphed to include

other genres, including rock ’n’ roll.

The group just signed a new record deal with Sony, and Wilson said he’s “sitting” on about 300 tracks, but only 14 will appear on the band’s upcoming album.

“This is how I’ve made my living since I was a teenager. It hasn’t been easy but I’m doing something creative, something that’s satisfying to the soul,” Wilson said. “There are a lot of people who make a lot of money who can’t make that claim. I want to do what I love, but I have had to make a lot of sacrifices.”

Wilson is excited to come to DeKalb for Corn Fest, and said the band will “rock” the audience.

“I love good music. I love real music. What it does for me I can’t put into words,” he said. “It’s very satisfying to have a great crowd that’s into what you do and to be able to play at a really high skill level that you’ve worked your whole life for.”

Bread & Roses DeKalb Municipal Band set to perform chorus rehearsals its final concert of the season Tuesday set to begin Sunday DAILY CHRONICLE

DAILY CHRONICLE Bread & Roses invites area women who are interested in joining a women’s community chorus and have a desire to help others to come see if this chorus is what they’ve been looking for.

The chorus, which rehearses from 5:45 to 8 p.m. Sundays at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 830 N. Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb, will start rehearsals Sunday in preparation for their upcoming fall concert Nov. 20 at the church.

Prospective members are invited to attend Sunday and Aug. 28 before making the commitment to join the group. No auditions are held, though it is expected that members will be able to at least match a pitch given to them.

Members of the DeKalb-based chorus come from as far away as Huntley and the Fox River Valley to develop and share their music with each other and the community. They are a group with a mixture of musical experiences and abilities. The message of their music – peace, justice, protection of our fragile environment, women’s empowerment, and diversity and acceptance for all – is conveyed not only through a variety of musical styles, but in their selection of a local nonprofit organization to benefit from the concert proceeds each semester.

Having just completed their 21st year, Bread & Roses will be sharing this concert with a local women’s African drumming group, UKB (Underground Kpanlogo Band). Each group will perform pieces on their own and they will do several pieces together. In addition, many of the other selections will involve a variety of rhythms and various percussive accompaniments.

The final concert of the season for the DeKalb Municipal Band, directed by Kirk Lundbeck, will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Dee Palmer Band Shell in Hopkins Park, 1403 Sycamore Road in DeKalb.

Guest vocalist Mike Williamson of Rockford will perform “It’s Only a Paper Moon,” “Georgia,” by Hoagy Carmichael and one of Nat King Cole‘s last hits, “L-OV-E.” Williamson started his singing career with The Proud Americans. His friends, The Lettermen, inspired him to start a career in music and he has sung with them on stage many times. As pro- Mike Williamson ducer and performer, Williamson has released 14 record albums including his new “Now You’re Here” CD, which contains original songs he wrote with keyboardist Bruce Warden.

In 2015, Williamson received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rockford Area Music Industry, along with Composer of the year with collaborator Bruce Warden. He also received the Margaret Sheldon Award from the American Cancer Society for “Magic Monday,” his benefit at the Rockford Metro Centre, which ran for 16 consecutive years and was endorsed

by Presidents Reagan and Bush.

His radio program, “Mike Williamson & Friends,” airs daily on WTPB, 99.3 FM, in Rockford and features music from many of his musical friends, and he sings regularly with his group at The Butterfly Club in Beloit, Wisconsin, and at Rockford’s Stockholm Inn. Traditional and patriotic music are highlights of the band’s season’s finale. Eric Osterling’s “Bandology,” a brightly paced concert march with interesting harmonies and fanfare rhythms, will open the concert. Second on the program is Tchaikovsky’s “Finale from the 4th,” which is filled with a haunting Russian folk melody, exciting rhythms, wild scales running up

and down and the sound of lightning bolts created by crashing cymbals.

“Chicago – The Musical” is a satire on Chicago’s corruption and wild living styles in the Jazz Age of 1920s after World War I. American composer Ferde Grofe’s most popular work is “On the Trail” from his 1931 “Grand Canyon Suite.” The movement depicts a trip to the bottom of the canyon with the braying theme, and works it into a lurching melody depicting a donkey climbing down to the bottom. The donkey knows there’s food ahead, and gallops to the end and the piece ends with a final outburst from the donkey.

Edwin Bagley’s “National Emblem” is a standard in American march repertoire. John Philip Sousa once said it is the third most effective street march ever written – that is, after two of his own.

Robert Jager’s “Esprit de Corps” was written as a tribute to the United States Marine Band and “Manhattan Beach” is Sousa’s briefest march. The military march “The Chimes of Liberty” is Edwin Franko Goldman’s greatest hit. It is considered one of the most lively and tuneful marches ever written.

Dimitri Kovalevsky’s “Comedian’s Galop” has a highly technical xylophone melody. Principal clarinet Larry Krey will be showcased in “Benny Goodman: King of Swing.”

The music of George M. Cohan, a leading Tin Pan Alley composer, has become synonymous with America and the Great White Way of Broadway. His “Star Spangled Spectacular” has become connected with Fourth of July celebrations nationwide and represents a nostalgic medley of Americana.

As per tradition, the DeKalb Municipal Band will close its 162nd season with “America the Beautiful” and “The Stars and Stripes Forever.”

Admission is free. Bench seating is available or bring a lawn chair or blanket. Weekly postings and pictures can be found on the band’s Facebook page.

KVAL hosts arts and crafts event for children The Kishwaukee Valley Art League sponsored an outdoor arts and crafts event for children at the recent Ellwood House Ice Cream Social using a garden theme to represent the beautiful Ellwood gardens. Kids had a choice of painting rocks, free style paintings, two types of birds in bird nests, and two types of dragonflies as craft projects. The budding artists were very busy and enjoyed taking home their creations. This was the first year for this children’s program.

KVAL, a nonprofit organization, holds meetings at 7 p.m. the first Thursday of the month in the Club Room at HyVee, 2700 DeKalb Ave. in Sycamore.

The “Harry Potter” author has completed a series of short digital works, Pottermore Presents, centered on the school where Potter and friends honed their magic. Three collections will be released Sept. 6 through Rowling’s Pottermore website, pottermore. com, which announced the books Wednesday.

The upcoming works include “Pow-

er, Politics and Pesky Poltergeists,” “Short Stories from Hogwarts” and “Hogwarts: An Incomplete and Unreliable Guide.”

Rowling already is having a busy year. In May, she was honored by PEN, the literary and human rights organization.

The stage production “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” opened in July and the film “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” for which she wrote the screenplay, is coming out in November.

DeKalb High School alum Erika McCall, class of 2000, will return home to host a fundraiser at the Egyptian Theatre.

The “Go for Yours Comedy Show” will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, to raise money to bring a Go for Yours Leadership Conference to local students in the spring. The conference will feature various individuals sharing how growing up in DeKalb helped shape their success.

In addition to the comedy show, DeKalb natives will be honored for accomplishments in their dedicated careers.

Honorees include Michelle Cho of the Los Angeles Humane Society, writer Melissa Blake and Jonathan Thompson, owner of Roc’s Barbershop.

McCall is the author of “Go for Yours,” a compilation of stories about young people who were brave enough to follow their dreams. Since its release, she has inspired individuals across the country and the “Go for Yours” message has been shared with students living in London, Mexico and Honduras.

First Lady Michelle Obama wrote a letter to McCall stating, “people can draw inspiration from stories of courage, strength and perseverance.”

McCall shares the importance of the black woman’s vote on the Centric TV series titled “Designed for You.” McCall is the executive director of actor and author Hill Harper’s Man-

ifest Your Destiny Foundation in Los Angeles. The foundation provides a one-week summer enrichment program for rising ninth-graders.

The program focuses on the development of critical thinking, reading comprehension, life skills, self-awareness and quality interaction between youth and mentors. In her role, McCall has expanded the foundation’s programs and services to Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Maryland.

Recently, McCall was selected as one of nine Los Angeles Urban League Young Professionals 2016 To the Nines honorees. The event honors nine emerging professionals younger than 40 innovating creatively or in business, academia or the community.

As someone who grew up as a minority student in DeKalb, McCall is most excited about bringing programs to help at-risk students in her hometown. She plans to serve as an example to kids that you can live in a small town and have big dreams.

28 Follow these tips to avoid COPD flare-ups Dear Dr. K: I have COPD. What can I do to avoid symptom flare-ups?

Dear Reader: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, is a long-term condition that makes breathing difficult. Breathing is a lot easier if you take your medicine and do any other therapy as directed.

Several types of medicines reduce the risk of flare-ups. Inhaled corticosteroids that reduce inflammation in the breathing tubes are one kind. Long-acting bronchodilators that keep the breathing tubes wide are another kind. A third kind are long-acting anticholinergics, which also act to keep the breathing tubes wide.

Other types of medicines are used to treat flare-ups. These include bronchodilator and anticholinergic drugs that act rapidly and do not last as long as the drugs used to reduce the risk of flare-ups.

Besides using the medicines as prescribed, there are other important things you can do to avoid symptom flare-ups: • Prevent respiratory infections. Sudden worsening of COPD often is triggered by a respiratory infection. Any respiratory infection – even a common cold – can cause a flare-up. Do whatever you can to avoid catching whatever is going around. That includes: • Washing your hands frequently with soap and water or alcohol-based instant hand sanitizers.

• Staying away from people who have colds or other respiratory infections.

• Getting a flu shot every year.

• Getting vaccinated against pneumonia as needed.

You also may benefit from an antiviral medication, such as oseltamivir (Tamiflu), for reducing your risk of getting influenza during flu season. An antiviral medication can help speed the resolution of the flu, if you get it. And this, in turn, reduces your risk of a flare-up of COPD.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff There is one flu medicine you should not use, however: zanamivir (Relenza), an inhaled powder antiviral. The powder can irritate the lungs of a person with COPD. • Exercise regularly. Aerobic exercise, which increases heart rate and breathing rate, is the most beneficial. Examples include walking and swimming. If you want something less aerobically challenging, try yoga or tai chi. Aim for at least 20 minutes of exercise a day on most days.

• Practice pursed-lip breathing. This technique will help you pace yourself through physical activities. Before you start moving, inhale through your nose so deeply your abdomen expands. Then, as you begin to move, exhale through your mouth with your lips pursed to slow down the airflow.

Your exhalation should last twice as long as your inhalation. When you finish exhaling, rest for a moment, then inhale and start the process again.

• Avoid lung irritants. An important way to prevent flare-ups is to keep your airways from becoming irritated. Many things can affect the airways, including exhaust fumes from your stove, smoke from your fireplace, dry air, molds and mildew. If you have allergies, try to avoid exposure to whatever causes them – pollen, pet dander, house dust, mold and so on.

If you follow these tips, I think you’ll find you have fewer episodes of severe difficulty in breathing.

DEAR ABBY I’m a 21-year-old college student.

Jeanne Recently, my Phillips cousin (also 21) moved in with my parents and me because her mom is verbally and mentally abusive. Lately, I’m having issues with her being here.

She constantly barges into my room, leaving me no time for myself. Most days she ends up napping in my bed instead of hers, leaving drool on my sheets.

When she comes home from school, she drops all of her things in my room. My parents cleared out a room for her, yet most of her stuff is in mine.

She gets ready in my room instead of hers and talks on the phone with her boyfriend loudly while I’m studying or reading.

She’s constantly complaining about school, her boyfriend, work, etc. If I get invited somewhere, she tries to tag along.

I don’t know what to do. I need time for myself. I can’t bring these issues up to her because she’s extremely sensitive and will see it as an attack.

I don’t know how much longer I can take it because she is stuck here until November.

The final contract of two notrump did not go well. After West unimaginatively led fourth-highest from his longest and strongest, South cashed out for down one, taking one spade, one diamond and five clubs.

North-South can make one notrump, and South can succeed in two clubs. (Two clubs by North fails after the spade-jack lead. East ruffs the third round of the suit with his club jack and shifts to the diamond queen.) But West can make two spades (with an overtrick if the defenders do not play trumps quickly enough to stop a club ruff in the East hand) for plus 110 (or 140). So the par contract is two no-trump doubled

by North-South or three clubs doubled by South, which would be minus 100.

South should respond one notrump. It is a slight underbid, but better than two clubs (or the weird two diamonds). Then, whatever West does, North passes. If you use twoover-one, South bids one no-trump, and, if West passes, North rebids two clubs (natural, or a three-card suit in a minimum balanced hand). After that, South can raise to three clubs to invite game. If West intervenes with two spades, which is highly likely, North passes, and South might well do likewise.
