Kingston rape suspect enters not guilty plea

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A 19-year-old Florida State University student with no criminal record fatally stabbed a couple at random outside their house, wounded their neighbor and was biting the dead man’s face when deputies finally subdued him, authorities said Tuesday.

Austin Harrouff, a former high school football defensive lineman and wrestler, may have been on hallucinogenic drugs when he attacked Michelle Mishcon, 53, and John Stevens, 59, outside their home in Tequesta, Martin County Sheriff William Snyder said.

The sheriff said Harrouff had joined his family for dinner at a restaurant a short distance away when he stormed off, apparently agitated about slow service. His parents were so worried by his behavior

that they called police and some of his fraternity brothers in a futile attempt to find him before the attack. About 45 minutes later, he apparently targeted the couple at random, the sheriff said.

“It’s inexplicable,” Snyder said. “One of the first things we try to do at a crime scene is try to understand the motive of the offender, because it is the motive of the offender that gets us going in the right direction. In this case, we can’t establish a motive. It’s ‘I don’t know.’”

Snyder said late Tuesday that Harrouff’s condition deteriorated and he may not survive. Earlier, Snyder said Harrouff suffered bruises, dog bites and cuts, and had been jolted with a stun gun during his altercation with deputies. He is being held under guard at a hospital and has not been formally charged.

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A Kingston man accused of raping two girls at a party on his 18th birthday pleaded not guilty Tuesday in DeKalb County Court.

Brenton W. Cleveland, 18, of the 34700 block of Glidden Road, Kingston, is charged with unlawful restraint, aggravated criminal sexual abuse and criminal sexual assault. If convicted of the most serious charge, criminal sexual assault, he could be sentenced to four to 15 years in prison.

A grand jury returned a five-count indictment against Cleveland earlier this year.

On Tuesday, Judge Robbin Stuckert read the charges aloud and explained Cleveland’s rights. Cleveland told the judge he understood his rights.

Authorities appeal to public for tips on suspicious behavior, stolen Chevrolet

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A home invasion that led to the killing of an elderly mother and her son in rural Sycamore left friends and neighbors shocked and detectives working around the clock searching for suspects on Tuesday.

Police received a 911 call around 6 p.m. Monday from a family member who had found 85-year-old Patricia A. Wilson and her son, Robert J. Wilson, 64, inside the home they shared at 16058 Old State Road east of Sycamore, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan said.

Police said it appeared the suspect or suspects forced their way into the home, which is set back at least 100 yards from Old State, nestled amid soybean fields.

Police said there were signs the Wilsons suffered blunt force trauma, which would suggest they had been beaten.

Afterward, police said the suspect stole Patricia Wilson’s white, four-door, 2010 Chevrolet Impala with Illinois license plate 903 0980. Police were searching for the stolen vehicle but had not found it as of Tuesday evening.

“Our hearts go out to the family,” Sullivan said. “This is a terrible crime perpetrated on an elderly mother and her son. I can assure you that the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office will do everything possible to find who is responsible for this crime.“ Almost 24 hours after the two were found slain, police had little more to share on the investigation beyond details they released at a Tuesday morning news conference. As many as 20 detectives from the DeKalb County Major Case Squad were working on the case, and Sullivan appealed to the public to come forward with any information.

“We’re working pretty much around the clock right now,” he said. “We’re going to follow up on leads that come in.”

He declined to give details about how the home had been entered or what, if anything, had been stolen. However, he said that there were signs that someone forced their way into the home.

DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller’s office was to perform autopsies on the victims and could release details of his findings Wednesday, Sullivan said.

The Great Western Trail, which begins on the outskirts of Sycamore and continues for miles into St. Charles, runs close behind the house, and Sullivan said one aspect police are investigating is whethr the perpetrator could have approached the home from the path.

“If anyone has seen anything on the bike path, any suspicious behavior, we ask them to talk to us because we want to talk to them,” Sullivan said. “If anyone has been on the bike path and found anything suspicious, please call us.”

At least one local sighting of a white Chevrolet Impala wound up leading nowhere Tuesday. After a tipster reported spotting the vehicle driving east on Route 64, police from the DeKalb and Kane County sheriff’s departments, along with Sycamore police, searched but came up empty, Sullivan said.

Although the suspects might have fled the area, Sullivan said residents should take basic precautionary measures, such as locking doors and win-

dows, using outside lighting, walking in pairs and remaining aware of surroundings.

“Certainly an important question is whether or not our citizens are safe,” Sullivan said. “While we have no indication that the individual responsible for this is still in the area, we are encouraging citizens to be extra vigilant.”

WILSONS WERE LONGTIME RESIDENTS

The Wilsons seemed an odd target for a violent crime; they had lived in the area for decades and Sullivan said investigators had no sense they had any real enemies.

Patricia Wilson’s husband, James, died in 2014.

Robert Wilson won $1 million in the Illinois Lucky Million Instant Lottery game after his name was drawn at the Taste of Chicago in July 1988, reportedly receiving a lump sum cash payment of about $700,000. He worked as a machinist at Barber Greene in DeKalb for many years and at the time said he had been there 16 years and didn’t plan to retire until he had at least 20 years of service.

He said he was shocked at the news his friend, a happy-go-lucky guy whom Baie called “Smiley,” had been killed.

“It’s terrible,” said Baie, who said he had known the victims for decades.

“Whoever did it, they should be beaten half to death.”

Robert Wilson usually stopped by Baie’s place on Old State Road every other day. He had missed church on Sunday, which was rare, Baie said.

Orrin Vandeburg, 78, who lives near the Wilsons’ home on Old State Road, was saddened by the deaths. Patricia Wilson was “very nice,” Vandeburg said.

“It shouldn’t have happened,” he said.

D-428 board OKs before-school care plan Kishwaukee YMCA will administer the elementary school program

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The DeKalb School District 428 board approved a proposal from Kishwaukee YMCA to have the nonprofit offer before-school care to the district’s elementary school children.

“The before-school program is just an extension of our after-school program, as well as our No School No Problem program,” said Lesley Feyerherm, head of youth development for the Kish Y. “Over the past couple of years, we’ve had some requests from parents in the district to have that program.”

The seven-member board voted, 6-0, to approve the plan. Vickie Hernan-Faivre, board vice president, abstained from the vote.

Kish Y has previously offered after-school care to students in the district, including on half-days and early dismissals. Similar to that program, the before-school one will operate at four elementary schools – Brooks, Founders, Cortland and Malta – but will serve students at a total of eight schools.

The care is available for a fee.

Feyerherm said the morning program will offer students a snack and

workers will check to be sure students’ homework is completed – as is done after school too, she said.

The before-school program was approved Tuesday as part of the board’s nonbusiness consent agenda, where several other items were part of the affirmative vote.

At least one board member questioned some of the logistics that could be part of the program. Founders Elementary is set to be the morning care site for students attending that school as well as nearby Lincoln and Tyler elementary schools. Students who attend Jefferson or Littlejohn schools will

likely go to Brooks.

Board member Kelly Mellott wanted to know how the students would get to their respective schools. Kish Y’s proposal asks for the students to be picked up by the district’s school bus service and transported to their school building.

But Superintendent Doug Moeller, in responding to Mellott’s question, said that part of the program hasn’t been settled yet.

“That’s something we’re working on,” Moeller said.

District 428 schools are scheduled to start Aug. 24.

Born: August 6, 1957; in Göppingen, Germany Died: August 13, 2016; in Kingston, IL John R. Ackerman, 59, of Kingston, IL, died in his home Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016.

He was born on Aug. 6, 1957, in Göppingen, Germany, to Melvin and Inger (Pederson) Ackerman. He married Donna DeGraaff on Sept, 2, 1989, in Elburn, IL. John lived his life fully and had a flare for being well-versed in many things. He was very sociable and he loved people and had many friends. He was an outdoorsman, and loved to hunt and fish. John was also a nature and animal lover. Although he could be dramatic at times, he still had a heart of gold and was generous and unique for his whole life.

John is survived by his wife of 26 years, Donna; his brother, Niels (Shelley) Ackerman; one aunt, Dorothy Pollock; one brother-inlaw, Gary DeGraaff; six nieces and nephews, Josh and Matt Ackerman, Laury, Richie and Skylar Cordell; multiple cousins, Debby and Barry Schwartz, Curt, Shari and Chole Carlson; and one pet, Smiley Miley.

There will be a Celebration of Life at 1 p.m.

Born Feb. 22, 1943, she was the daughter of William and Verna (Cunningham) Roberts.

Betty moved to Genoa in the late 1960s from her home town Spencer, WV. That is where she met the love of her life. They shared 31 wonderful years together.

She worked at Greenlee Textron in Genoa for 31 years before retiring at 65.

She enjoyed working in her yard, even receiving an award for yard of the year. Betty spent countless hours with her grandchildren and later her great-grandchildren. Her favorite pastime was going to bingo with her friends or the occasional trip to the casino.

Betty was like a magnet that drew you in, whether it was her great sense of humor, her infectious laugh, her ability to love and accept everyone for who they were or her kind heart.

Anyone who had the privilege of knowing her always wanted to be where Betty was.

Among the officers whose emails CNN is seeking are Officer Jason Van Dyke, who shot McDonald 16 times, and Deputy Chief David McNaughton, who approved the report that the shooting was justified and who abruptly retired Monday.

The binding opinion last week by Democratic Attorney General Lisa Madigan follows quickly on a May Cook County Circuit Court ruling that Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s emails about separate issues aren’t automatically exempt from disclosure even though sent on private devices.

SPRINGFIELD – Safety and insurance industry experts said Illinois traffic fatalities are expected to pass 1,000 this year for the first time since 2008 because of higher speeds, more miles driven and an increase in the number of younger drivers on the road.

As of Friday, 629 people had died in vehicle, motorcycle, pedestrian and bicycle crashes in Illinois this year, The State Journal-Register reported. The number is up 50 from the same period in 2015.

In 2015, there were a total of 998 traffic fatalities, which was the highest number since 1,043 died in 2008.

Itasca-based National Safety Council statistics manager Ken Kolosh said much of the rising toll has been on rural interstates.

“That’s where the larger part of fatalities occur,” Kolosh said. “It’s higher speeds.

CHICAGO – When Illinois voters head to the polls in November, their first ballot question won’t involve U.S. presidential candidates, but a measure aimed at preventing transportation-related funding in the state from being used for other purposes.

Transportation-related funds – generated in part by tolls, license fees and the gas tax – have been targeted by state government for unrelated spending over the years. The Transportation for Illinois Coalition, made up of business groups and unions, estimates that since fiscal 2003, more than $6.8 billion set aside for transportation projects was spent elsewhere.

Treasurer sets hearings on life insurance practices

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs is launching a series of public hearings to explore how life insurance companies avoid paying death benefits.

The first hearing is set for Wednesday morning in the city council chambers in Normal.

The state treasurer’s office said Monday that it has identified more than $550 million in unpaid death benefits owed to families in Illinois and that $7.4 billion has been identified nationally.

Frerichs supports legislation to require insurers to use federal death records to identify deceased policyholders whose life insurance proceeds remain unpaid.

The bill awaits Gov. Bruce Rauner’s signature. A spokeswoman for the governor says the bill is under review.

Court slashes damages to Illinois riverboat casinos

CHICAGO – An appellate court has sharply reduced a jury’s damages award to several Illinois casinos from $78 million to $26 million in a case tied to imprisoned former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals otherwise backed the jury’s findings in a lawsuit brought by riverboat casinos against a racetrack company.

But the three-judge panel concluded in a ruling posted earlier this month that there was insufficient evidence to support the finding of a conspiracy. So it required the damages award be reduced.

The trial focused on a pay-to-play deal prosecutors said involved Blagojevich and one of the racetrack company’s top executives, John Johnston.

The casinos paid millions in an effective tax imposed by the Blagojevich-era Legislature. The money went to support financially struggling, politically well-connected tracks.

Clinton continues spree of fundraising in August

WASHINGTON – Scranton isn’t a standard stop on the Democratic fundraising circuit. Yet Hillary Clinton put the working-class Pennsylvania town on her itinerary – several times.

The Democratic presidential nominee and her family have made four visits to Scranton donors since launching her campaign last August, raising millions of dollars in a former industrial city more known for needing economic aid than giving it out.

“Last July, we were all pinching ourselves and saying it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but then she came back,” said Grace McGregor, whose parents hosted an event Monday at their home.

Clinton is leaving no fundraiser behind as she crisscrosses the country scooping up cash. She’s already been to 10 fundraisers in the first half of the month, and some of the biggest events are yet to come.

In fact, she is on track to top the $90 million she raised for her campaign and Democratic allies in July.

August has always been one of the best months to raise money because voters tend to be more focused on their summer vacations than politics, giving candidates more time to woo donors.

Clinton definitely got that memo.

Donors can rock out to Cher at a Cape Cod “summer celebration” on Sunday and close out the month by dancing with Jimmy Buffett in the Hamptons. Clinton has made ample use of campaign finance limits

that have loosened considerably in the past six years.

Although donors can give a maximum of $2,700 to the candidate’s campaign, they can give far more to the party through new accounts that Congress opened up. And a Supreme Court ruling in 2014 lifted the overall cap on what donors can give in an election year – meaning Clinton and the party have no reservations about asking for as much as they can.

At least five August events have hit the seven-figure benchmark. Among them, a 60-person dinner where the minimum gift was $33,400 in an “estates only” area of Greenwich, Connecticut.

Last week, Clinton’s cash express stopped in Miami Beach for two events. The larger one included 100 attendees donating at least $2,700. Later that evening, Clinton hosted a more intimate group of 30, each of whom gave at least $50,000.

Clinton’s labors on the fundraising circuit have kept her ahead of Republican rival Donald Trump. But he unexpectedly came close to rivaling her haul in July, raising more than $80 million for his campaign and supportive Republican Party groups.

While the GOP business mogul has vowed to project strength and decisive action against terror, the former secretary of state has pointed to her deep foreign policy credentials and warned that Trump could plunge the nation into another war.

Trump has previously called for an unprecedented temporary ban on Muslims entering the U.S., and said in his Ohio speech that he would overhaul the nation’s screening process and block those who sympathize with extremist groups or fail to embrace American values.

The Republican nominee has made changes to the nation’s immigration system and the construction of a wall along the Mexican border a key part of his fight against terrorism and the Islamic State group, which he compared to the struggle against communism during the Cold War.

Careful on the road as school’s back in session If you can believe it, summer break is over and DeKalb County school children have begun heading back to school.

Students in Genoa-Kingston District 424 returned to class on Monday, classes began at Indian Creek District 425 on Tuesday, and students in Sycamore District 427, Hiawatha District 426, and Hinckley-Big Rock District 429 return today.

By Aug. 24, when DeKalb schools have their first day of class, all local public schools will be back in session.

The return to the classroom means summer vacation is winding down for thousands of local youngsters.

Many also are returning to area bus stops.

That means morning and afternoon commuters must be especially cautious. It’s a change in your driving routine and habits, and an abundance of caution is recommended.

Remember there will be plenty of children – including younger ones – crossing streets and gathering at neighborhood street corners near your driving route, which has been less crowded for the past couple of months.

Children, of course, don’t always make the best decisions. They are more apt to run inattentively into the street and without notice.

Children also are smaller, so they can’t be seen as easily. Remember that while near bus stops and in school zones. Remember, too, it’s against the law to talk on a cellphone while driving in Illinois.

We’re going to repeat that: stay off your cellphone while driving anyway, but especially while you’re in a school zone. Even if it’s handsfree, that call can wait until you’re through the school zone.

And remember it’s against the law to pass a school bus that is stopped at drop-off or pickup locations. If you see the retractable stop sign sticking out from the school bus in front of you, please stop and wait for the arm to retract before hitting the gas pedal.

Buses need more time to come to a complete stop, so don’t follow too closely.

Of course, these are common-sense warnings.

You’ve probably heard them before. Most people follow them as a part of their regular driving routine. But it’s important that everyone follow through.

We want a safe school year for students and motorists.

The fire this time is in Milwaukee

Another black man has been shot to death by police, triggering an angry eruption and feeding cable news with fresh images nearly indistinguishable from those of Ferguson, Missouri, and Baltimore. Once again, an American city is seized by rioting, flames, gunshots and fear – an exclamation point on this long, blistering, toxic summer.

This time, maybe not just coincidentally, the violence has convulsed the nation’s most segregated city, Milwaukee, which a city alderman calls “the worst place to live for African-Americans in the entire country.”

That probably is not a great overstatement given the dysfunction of Wisconsin’s biggest city, where the familiar elements of inner-city decay – poverty, joblessness, hopelessness, crime and toxic relations between the police and the black community – are exacerbated by racial disparities that are among the more pronounced in the nation. African-Americans, who make up 40 percent of the city’s residents, contribute to some of the nation’s deepest state achievement gaps, highest rates of

high school suspension, and worst poverty gaps. It’s no bargain to be black in Brew City.

To understand why Milwaukee’s black community is seething is not to justify the riots that erupted Saturday after the death of Sylville K. Smith, 23. Nor is it to excuse Smith himself, who had an extensive arrest record. According to police, he was holding a semiautomatic handgun with 23 bullets when, seconds after fleeing on foot following a traffic stop, he was shot to death in a fenced-in area when he turned toward the city police officer who was chasing him.

If that account holds up – and video from the officer’s body camera may settle the question – then the officer, a three-year veteran, was justified in opening fire.

Desperate to quell the rage and destruction, Milwaukee’s mayor, Tom Barrett (D), has imposed a 10 p.m. curfew for teenagers as the city braces for a continuation of the weekend’s violence. And he has asked that the body-camera footage be released immediately.

If the footage depicts what the police say it does, it could help

restore order and put out the fires that have so far consumed an auto parts shop, a gas station, a liquor store, a supermarket, cars and other property in the city’s heavily black Sherman Park neighborhood. Police officers have been injured, though none seriously, as have civilians.

A possible saving grace is that a 2014 Wisconsin law mandates that an independent state agency take charge of investigations in police-involved killings.

That could dampen suspicions among African-Americans that accountability and impartiality are unlikely, or that real justice is impossible.

Still, the city and especially its black community are often regarded with thinly concealed contempt by state officials, a problem that has worsened under Republican Gov. Scott Walker.

Smith’s death has lit a fuse. It will take sensitivity on the part of authorities, plus a healthy dose of transparency and a commitment to work on entrenched problems, to ensure that the destructive force is contained.

So this thing most of us believe to be true is empirically and demonstrably false. Check it for yourself by perusing the Uniform Crime Reports at FBI.gov.

Not that I think that will change many minds. Those who are ideologically invested in the notion of a nation where crime is spiraling out of control will likely round file those statistics in the same mental receptacle where they and others store President Obama’s citizenship, global warming and the fact that vaccines do not cause autism.

This happens often enough that there’s a name for it: confirmation bias.

It was quantified in a 1979 Stanford University study which found that confronting people with facts proving a belief wrong does not change their

minds. Rather, people tend to disregard the proof and harden the false belief.

Later research has found similar results. In 2004, Drew Westen, a psychology professor at Emory University, ran a study which showed that, given weak evidence confirming their view or strong evidence refuting it, most people will give greater weight to the former.

I’m as guilty as anyone. As someone who considers the Indian-themed name of Washington’s professional football team to be offensive, I was vexed a few months ago when a Washington Post poll found that the vast majority of American Indians are not insulted by it. My instinct was to discount the poll and question its methodology.

And yes, maybe the methodology was, indeed, flawed. Or maybe that was just how I defended myself from an unwelcome truth.

This question of how and why we believe as we do is not abstract. As Westen told me in 2004, “The scary thing is the extent to which you can imagine this influencing jury decisions, boardroom decisions, political decisions.”

It gets scarier when you factor in the cynical manipulations of demagogic politicians, internet hoaxers and putative news organizations that use our confirmation biases to steer our opinions – and our fears. It becomes easier to understand why America now feels like one nation cleaved in two, a people living in alternate realities governed by separate and unequal “truths.” And it brings to mind what Lincoln – quoting Jesus – said about a house divided.

The divisions of this house argue for a renewed scholastic emphasis on critical thinking, for a principled tearing down of ideological silos and, maybe, for a little self-reflection. They also suggest that maybe John 8:32 isn’t so far off the mark. After all, it says that before the truth can set you free, you must first know it.

Apparently, that part is easier said than done.

Despite audacity, Trump lets Obama, Clinton off hook

Bloomberg View How would Donald Trump assess Donald Trump’s candidacy? As he might put it: A lot of people are saying his campaign is an operation on behalf of the Democratic Party to destroy the Republicans.

“A lot of people are saying”? That’s not a very high evidentiary standard.

What else?

Well, to start there is the photo.

You know the one, where Trump and his new bride Melania are rubbing elbows with the Clintons. Bill Clinton spoke with Trump right before Trump announced his candidacy.

Trump has, of course, contributed to Clinton campaigns in past years as well. This doesn’t even get into the fact that Ivanka Trump and Chelsea Clinton are friends.

All of that adds up to a lot of conjecture and coincidence. It’s more likely there is a less sinister explanation for Trump’s obvious political errors in the general election: An isolated egomaniac rejects the advice of political professionals.

And yet the “Trump is a plant” theory has more compelling evidence than Trump could amass for claims such as “Obama founded ISIS” or his

allies could muster for “Democrats murdered a DNC official because he leaked emails” (which, by the way, most security experts say were pilfered by Russian intelligence).

The Republican candidate’s wild lunges and errors in recent weeks, particularly on national security, certainly do more harm to his own adopted party than to those he purports to target.

This is not just because Trump’s comments about the Islamic State, the Iraq War, and the Khan family (to name just three) are comically false. They also let President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton off the hook. It’s easy to dismiss a crazed accusation about Obama being the founder of a jihadi organization; it’s much harder for the administration to respond to serious and pointed criticism of its foreign policy.

Let’s start with the Iran deal.

The Wall Street Journal reported this month that $400 million in cash arrived in Iran just as the Iranians were releasing Americans they had detained. Republicans in Congress are now following up. On Friday, Senators Mike Lee and Ted Cruz wrote a scathing letter to Obama, asking him whether the payment to Iran violated U.S. prohibitions against financial in-

teractions with Iran. This is the kind of fodder that a typical Republican presidential campaign would seize upon. Trump’s campaign doesn’t even seem to be trying.

Then there is a report released last week from House Republicans on the Intelligence, Armed Services and Appropriations Committee. It didn’t get much airtime because the political conversation was dominated by Trump giving Clinton and Obama the Islamic State group MVP award and musing about the “Second Amendment people.”

The report found that in 2014 and 2015, U.S. Central Command intelligence analysts’ accurate and pessimistic assessments of Obama’s new war against the Islamic State were often edited out of the finished product.

“I believe the reporting out of U.S. Central Command, which showed a rosier picture about U.S. efforts against IS, led the United States to inadequately provide resources to take on the threat that has now grown and metastasized against the U.S.,” Rep. Mike Pompeo, an author of the report and a Republican member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, told me.

This falls into a pattern. Obama,

like most modern presidents, engages in selective disclosure of state secrets.

Filmmakers are provided extraordinary access to research a movie about the raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

At the same time, the White House slow-rolled House oversight committees in their investigation of the 2012 attack at Benghazi.

So far, the few documents released from the 2011 bin Laden raid to the public paint a picture of an antagonistic relationship between bin Laden and Iran. Former officials who have studied them, like former Defense Intelligence Agency Director Michael Flynn, said there are still classified documents from the raid that show Iran and al-Qaida enjoyed a much cozier relationship.

This critique of Obama is not as bold as calling him the founder of the IS. But it has the benefit of being true.

Trump’s current approach has the benefit of helping his political opponents. So again, it’s worth asking who in the end really gains from Trump’s paranoid, fact-free campaign style.

After all, a lot of people are saying it’s Hillary Clinton.

Far be it from me to correct Jesus, but to survey the modern political landscape is to see precious little evidence of the truth setting anyone free. Indeed, it is to become convinced that a great many would not know the truth if it bit them on the nose. They prefer the soft comfort of lies to the hard challenge of facts.

In that sense, a new poll by the Huffington Post and YouGov only illustrates again something we already know. It says that most Americans – 61 percent – believe crime is on the rise over the last decade. Which is just not true. The violent crime rate for 2014, the last year for which full statistics are available, was 365.5 per 100,000 people. To find a time when crime was lower, you’d have to go back to when Richard Nixon was in the White House, “Room 222” was on TV, “One

DeKALB – While sophomores dominate the Northern Illinois men’s soccer team roster – 11 in total – the defensive side of the field is still run by the older guys.

Despite having to rely heavily on younger players, the Huskies enter the campaign returning several of their key upperclassmen on defense as they look to become the Mid-American Conference champions for the first time since 2011.

“It needs to be (our strength),” Huskies coach Eric Luzzi said about the defense. “The fact that we’ve spent a lot of time to get our defense sharp and solid and tight and the fact that these guys know how we do things for what will be their fourth year, yeah, I think the expectation is defensively, we’ll be a very sound team.”

The Huskies, who went 7-7-1 overall and 1-3-1 in MAC play in 2015, return junior defender Luke Read, who tied for the lead on the team with five goals and made second team all-MAC last season. Also back is senior defender Richard Hall, who scored a goal and an assist in 10 starts.

Junior defender Jerome Roche, who was fourth on the team with 1,359 minutes, also returns – along with senior midfielder Albert Levett, junior midfielder Giovanni Garcia, sophomore forward Giovanni Pacheco and senior defender/midfielder Cody Witkowski.

Sophomore midfielder Kevin Rodriguez is the reigning MAC Freshman of the Year, after scoring two goals in 13 games and 11 starts for the Huskies.

“He’s starting to almost come out of his shell as a person,” Luzzi said of Rodriguez. “He’s a pretty quiet kid. We noticed so far (recently), as a person, he’s not as quiet. I’m hopeful and confident that will help raise his game to another level.”

While the Huskies were strong in set pieces last year, Luzzi acknowledges that they’ll need to find some source of offense this season. Out of the

“Obviously, we know the goals will have to come from somewhere,” Luzzi said. “I don’t think we’ll have one guy that scores 10-12 goals. It’ll have to be by committee, but I’ve been impressed by a handful of guys that will play attacking positions. ... There’s a lot of guys that have impressed me so far.”

Luzzi said that he expects some of the four incoming freshmen to play an important role on the team, and freshman Christian Molina scored the Huskies’ lone goal in the 2-1 exhibition loss

to Olivet Nazarene on Friday.

The Huskies looked primed to have their first winning season since 2011 after going 7-3 to start the 2015 campaign, but the young Northern Illinois team struggled down the stretch – going 0-4-1 in the final five matches.

“I think part of it, the freshman class – the grind factor sort of caught up with them,” Luzzi said. “Every single point, every single game, every single minute of the conference games is such a war and there’s so much on the line, the intensity level in those games are on another level.”

Maddie moving to WR

jseverson@shawmedia.com Beginning on Monday, Northern Illinois senior Anthony Maddie has switched to practicing and taking reps as a wide receiver, Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey said on Tuesday.

Maddie has spent his entire time with the Huskies as a quarterback – including training camp up until this week – but his season-ending back injury last year, coupled with a strong performance by backup Ryan Graham during the 2015 season, has sent him down the depth chart.

“He’s a senior and he wants to get on the field and we felt this was the best way for him to get on the field,” Carey said.

Carey called it a mutual decision between Maddie and the coaches and that he will likely be full time at wide Daily Chronicle File Photo receiver for the time being, although Northern Illinois’ Anthony Maddie runs with the ball during the Huskie Bowl at Huskie Carey said it’s possible later in the seaStadium in 2014. After missing the 2015 season due to back surgery, Maddie has recently son for him to split reps between quarterback and wide receiver and that switched to wide receiver.

Maddie knows the playbook enough that he can be put back in quarterback if needed. During team drills on Tuesday, Maddie had at least two catches while being used as a slot receiver and also participated in the kickoff team.

The 6-foot-1, 203-pound Maddie redshirted in 2012 at Western Michigan – where Carey said he played some wide receiver – in his first year out of Aurora Christian, before transferring to Northern Illinois. After sitting out the 2013 season, he played in nine games during the 2014 season, going 20 for 33 with 227 yards, no touchdowns and one interception and rushed for 201 yards and one touchdown.

With Maddie out with back surgery in 2015 and starting quarterback Drew Hare suffering a season-ending Achilles injury midway through the season, Graham completed 54 percent of his passes for six touchdowns and three interceptions in four starts. During training camp, Graham has emerged as the main backup to Hare.

DC police chief stepping down to head NFL security

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Washington police Chief Cathy Lanier, the first woman to lead the department permanently and one of the nation’s longest-serving and most popular big-city police chiefs, announced Tuesday that she is stepping down to become head of security for the National Football League.

Lanier, 49, started her career with the Metropolitan Police Department as a patrol officer and rose through the ranks. She served as chief for nine-anda-half years, under three mayoral administrations, overseeing reductions in crime as the nation’s capital experienced an influx of wealth that transformed once-troubled neighborhoods.

Lanier said at a news conference that she has rejected numerous offers to lead other big-city police departments, but she saw the opportunity to handle security for the nation’s “favorite sport” to be too good to pass up.

“To women who think that there are limitations to what you can do and where you can work, the NFL reaching out to me for this position says that there are not limitations for where you can work because of your age, your

race or your gender,” Lanier said.

In her new job, Lanier will oversee the security of all 32 NFL teams and their venues, working with federal, state and local law enforcement and handling security for the Super Bowl.

“We are excited to welcome to our team an individual of Cathy’s talent and extensive record Cathy Lanier of accomplishments,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. “Cathy joins us with a well-deserved reputation of being a tremendous communicator, innovator and relationship builder.”

Lanier, a Maryland native who dropped out of high school in ninth grade and became a mother at age 15, was an inspiration to many as she rose to the department’s top job. She came from a family of police officers and joined the department after earning a high-school equivalency diploma. She later earned a bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees.

Lanier was head of homeland security and counterterrorism for the department when then-Mayor-elect Adrian Fenty called and offered her the job

of chief, without an interview.

“This city gave me an opportunity when many would not have,” Lanier said. “I owe my life to this city, to the residents and to the department. ... It’s bittersweet, it’s heartbreaking to leave the city I grew up in.”

Polls consistently ranked her as the most popular public official in the city, and she had a frank, easygoing manner on television and in testimony before the D.C. Council. She was an early advocate of officers wearing body cameras, saying they would increase transparency and promote good policing. The department is in the process of outfitting all patrol officers with cameras.

Washington was dubbed the nation’s murder capital during the crack epidemic of the 1990s – with more than 300 slayings a year in the city of roughly 600,000 – but violent crime had already decreased significantly by the time Lanier became chief amid the city’s booming post-9/11 economy. Homicides continued to drop to a low of 88 in 2012, although, slayings increased last year by more than 50 percent, and killings this year are continuing at 2015’s pace.

Lanier said she was most proud of

restoring the department’s commitment to community policing.

“The most important legacy is we have a community that supports us,” she said. “People will talk to us now and give us the information we need.”

Lanier clashed periodically with the city’s police union, particularly over a wave of retirements that some officers said left the department – which now has 3,700 officers – dangerously understaffed. Union treasurer Gregg Pemberton said nearly 1,000 officers had “fled” the department in the past two-and-a-half years.

“Lanier should be ashamed that she’s leaving the department in disarray,” Pemberton said. “Morale has never been worse.”

Lanier’s last day will be Sept. 17.

Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser said she will appoint an interim chief in the coming days, and she said it’s possible the next permanent chief will be promoted from within.

Lanier made $253,000 annually as police chief. Because her departure is considered a retirement, she will receive an annual pension of roughly $177,000. She declined to disclose what her salary with the NFL will be.

With Lackey hurt, Cahill goes strong

The powers of Trevor Cahill on the mound for the Cubs were so impressive Tuesday in a 4-0 victory over the Brewers that they might expand to healing powers by next week.

Cahill quickly became the key to the John Lackey Recovery Plan after allowing just two hits over five innings in his first start as a Cub – leading the Cubs to their 12th victory in 13 games in the opener a doubleheader.

“The fact that he pitched as well as he did, and he’s stretched out as he is, just opens up possibilities,” manager Joe Maddon said. “He obviously gave us something to talk about.”

Lackey was still sore two days after leaving Sunday night’s start in the seventh inning because of shoulder tightness, and the Cubs are looking at options for pushing his next turn back a few days, if not skip it entirely.

Maddon, who said the club will have a decision Wednesday, did not rule out the disabled list – although Lackey hasn’t had an MRI and the Cubs appear to be trying to avoid that.

“We’re absolutely looking at different scenarios,” Maddon said.

Cahill (2-3) faced just two over the minimum in his first start since April of last year when he was with Atlanta. Until activated for his start, he had been on the DL with a knee injury since the All-Star break.

Cahill was allowed to be added to the roster as a 26th man Tuesday because of the doubleheader, giving the Cubs a deadline of Wednesday’s game for finding a corresponding move to keep him on the roster.

Recently acquired reliever Joe Smith, who walked two of the three he faced in Tuesday’s opener, has struggled in six appearances with the club and could be the odd man out if the DL isn’t used.

Cahill, who also made a highlight-reel play covering first for an out in the fifth after bunting for a safety squeeze and RBI in the fourth, said he doesn’t know what’s next for his role. And he won’t guess.

“I don’t want to speculate,” he said.

“Whenever I speculate, it always seems like it ends up completely different. But I felt a lot better today, and whatever they want me to do, I’ll work hard and go out there and compete and do the best I can.”

Cahill, a 2010 All-Star as a starter when he won 18 games, was acquired by the Cubs a year ago this week after being released by both the Braves and Dodgers in 2015. He became a significant part of the Cubs’ playoff push as a reliever and made six postseason appearances for them.

What would it mean to be able to pitch his way into another important role down the stretch for a transformed staff this time around?

“A lot,” he said. “I like the guys in the clubhouse; I respect them all. Whatever they have me do, I’ll just try and go out there and do my best. Beyond that, whatever happens, happens.”

Her father, never short on imagination, laid a red blocking pad on the turf and pulled Jett, who’s almost 2½, around by the rope attached to the back.

For 40 minutes, at least 50 sets of eyeballs – and maybe half as many cameras – watched from afar. They tried to gauge if Fox’s brief, upbeat conversation with him was polite or showed genuine affection. They wanted to see how Bennett interacted with Bears staffers and players – Sam Acho sat down on the grass – that stopped by to say hello.

Then it was time to speak to Bennett himself, five months after the Bears decided his sizable talent wasn’t worth his outsize locker room impact and dealt him to the Patriots for a fourth-round pick.

Only the tight end kept walking.

Bennett knows how to court media attention when it benefits him. After the Bears-Patriots joint practice, he refused to do so.

One day after Jay Cutler’s chilly response to whether he’d chatted with Bennett – “No, I missed that opportunity,” he deadpanned – Fox was warmer.

He played with Bennett’s daughter and gave wife Siggi a hug.

“In this business, people change cities,” Fox said. “Coaches do it. Players do it. It’s part of this business. And so there is no ill will. And there is nothing like that.

“Sometimes it doesn’t work out. There’s a business side.

There’s a football side. There’s a bunch of things that happen over the course of a football career, so I still wish Martellus nothing but the best.”

When a Patriots staffer tried to get him to conduct interviews, Bennett told him he’d speak after

Thursday night’s exhibition. He should: Questions remain about his Chicago exit.

A truncated list: Why did he and brother Michael feel compelled to rip Cutler to ESPN? Does he regret sitting out last offseason and getting off on the wrong foot with GM Ryan Pace and Fox? After a murky finish – he stayed home from the Packers game on Thanksgiving night and later said he didn’t watch it live, and spent the last four weeks on Injured Reserve with a ribs injury – does he wish things had ended differently? Did he feel chastened by the trade?

The answers could reveal why the Bears decided to move a talent they haven’t come close to replacing.

Tuesday, Bennett flashed the same athleticism that intrigued his three previous employers, who nonetheless allowed their relationships with him to spiral toward divorce.

He also exuded the same nonchalance that used to cause former Bears coach Marc Trestman to run alongside Bennett after plays, hoping the tight end would decide to hustle his way back to the huddle.

Working one-on-one with quarterback Tom Brady near the goal line, Bennett did his best John Wayne mosey back toward the Hall of Famer after each catch.

The duo totaled maybe five catches in three minutes. A frustrated fan, not yet aware of Bennett’s quirks, screamed at him to hustle up; a Bears linebacker did the same two years ago in camp.

Bennett was even involved in a fight. He wasn’t body-slamming Kyle Fuller this time – he did that to the rookie two years ago – but instead got his helmet knocked off and yapped at Bears outside linebacker Lamarr Houston.

Thus far, the Patriots seem pleased with Bennett, who is playing out the final year of his deal.

“It looks like he can do pretty much everything you want a tight end to do,” coach Bill Belichick said.

That includes being insightful, thoughtful and self-aware.

That is, when he wants to be.

Most impressive about White in Tuesday’s practice was the route-running and physicality he displayed in matchups with Patriots starting corners Butler, Logan Ryan and nickel Justin Coleman.

Running primarily inside slants, short curls and button hooks underneath, for arguably the first time this summer, White looked more like a receiver than an athlete against one of the league’s better defenses.

Make no mistake, White still has a great deal of work to do to demonstrate he’s grasped the whole route tree, but the consistency with which he made plays in traffic vs. Butler and Logan should not be ignored.

It is also hard to imagine after watching practice No. 2 between the Patriots and Bears that Josh Bellamy hasn’t already secured a spot on the roster.

Bellamy proved himself an invaluable special teams presence last year, has had a very good summer to date and for whatever reason he’s been consistently behind the secondary in training camp more than any other receiver.

Bellamy did it again vs. the Patriots, getting wide open deep twice for two touchdowns on Tuesday.

The two other receivers who’ve stood out throughout camp are Marc Mariani – wide receivers coach Curtis Johnson says, “I love, absolutely love him” – and seventh-round pick Daniel Braverman, although Braverman has looked more like a seventh-rounder here in New England.

Beyond so much good news for Jay Cutler and Dowell Loggains, the upshot of all this could be bad news for Eddie Royal.

Mariani appears to have made the team, and as much as the Bears would probably love to sneak Braverman through to the practice squad, it seems unlikely they could.

The Bears aren’t going to keep three slot receivers and having missed over two weeks and counting with concussion issues, the veteran Royal is looking more and more like the odd man out.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Saying the 2016 Chicago Bears offense is a work in progress is kind of like announcing Bill Belichick is a good football coach.

No kidding!

But while the offensive line will be a question mark well into the regular season, there’s no real telling what they have at running back until the O-line improves and tight end just isn’t going to be a strength, there is something happening to the wide receiver corps in Foxborough.

Forget that Alshon Jeffery actually showed some emotion in a “baseball fight” with Malcolm Butler on Monday, through two full days of practice he has been the best player on the field from either team, with the exception, of course, of Tom Brady, and perhaps even Kevin White.

Jeffery has gone strong and hard through two full, physical practices with no soft tissue concerns, and has been unstoppable for the Pats.

But you know Jeffery could, you’re just never sure if he will.

The bigger revelation here at “Camp Belichick & Fox” has been White. You can argue that the second-year player selected with the seventh overall pick in last year’s draft is seeing his first legitimate NFL test facing one of the NFL’s best teams here in what have been surprisingly physical and extremely competitive practices.

On Tuesday, White won the day, as he did a lot of the dirty work underneath, while Jeffery challenged the secondary, and White looked like a seasoned pro.

John Fox was reserved in his praise, saying, “They’re both very, very talented players. Being out here practicing where they get that timing with the quarterback and the rest of the offensive teammates, the better.”

Referring to their health issues, Fox added, “We’ve had a little bit of a string there, knock on wood. But when healthy they’re both very capable.”

This was one of those days, though, where Foxy’s quotes didn’t do justice to the gleam in his eye.

Talking specifically about the impact of White’s lost rookie season, Fox added, “I think there’s some rust.

I think anytime someone doesn’t practice and play, we have to bring the WD40 out and spray the rust off.

Biles wins floor exercise for record-tying 4th gold

The Associated Press RIO DE JANEIRO – The Simone Show went out in style. And gold.

Again.

Simone Biles put the finishing touches on one of the greatest Olympics by a gymnast, capturing her fourth gold of the games with an electric performance in the floor exercise on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old American completed an extraordinary stretch that included a team gold for the “Final Five” as well as individual golds in the all-around and vault and bronze on balance beam. Her five medals tie the most for an American female gymnast in a single Olympics, and her four golds tie an Olympic record shared by four others.

“It’s been a long journey,” Biles said. “I’ve enjoyed every single mo-

ment of it. I know our team has. It’s been very long in competing so many times. It got tiring. But we just wanted to end on a good note.”

Biles embraced her longtime coach shortly after her routine – which includes a tumbling pass named in her honor and a Brazilian-themed segment intended to play to the crowd in Rio – and beamed when her score of 15.966 was posted.

Teammate Aly Raisman followed with a 15.500 to give her a third medal during Rio and six overall in her Olympic career. The 22-year-old team captain – who was second in the all-around to Biles last week – waved to the stands as she walked off the floor, likely for the final time as a competitor.

The medals gave the American women nine during the meet, the most ever by the U.S. at an Olympics.

While she admitted she was a bit tired on Monday after her only one real mistake of the games – a wobbly landing on beam that cost her a shot at gold – Biles didn’t look it during her signature event.

Buoyant in a glittery red, white and blue leotard, Biles spent 90 seconds showcasing her talent. She doesn’t tumble so much as fly, her 4-foot-8 frame soaring over the white mat as if she was trying to touch the video board three stories above. She plans to take a break following the closing ceremonies and try to adjust to a life that will never be the same after nine days that elevated her from gymnastics’ best-kept secret to star.

Shaky U.S. faces Argentina again, only now in quarters

RIO DE JANEIRO – In the past three Olympics it was a semifinal matchup, the penultimate step on the winner’s climb to the gold-medal podium.

Now the U.S. men’s basketball team meets Argentina in the quarterfinals, and the stakes couldn’t be clearer.

The Americans win, or suffer their greatest Olympic failure ever.

The Argentines win, or say goodbye to their Golden Generation.

Manu Ginobili and Luis Scola did the punching when the U.S. was knocked down to its lowest point 12 years ago, and the Americans, who’ve handled them every time since, expect their proud opponents to have one last good fight in them.

“Guys like that, they’ve been together and so well-coached and they’ve helped international basketball take giant steps forward, and we know that’s what we’re playing” today, U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski said.

It’s the third game of quarterfinal Wednesday, which opens with Australia playing Lithuania. Rivals France and Spain play next – with the winner getting the U.S.-Argentina winner – and

Croatia faces Serbia in the nightcap.

Any of those teams should believe in its chances after the Americans were challenged like never before under Krzyzewski in the preliminary round, winning their last three games by 10, three and three points.

It’s a far cry from last month, when the U.S. beat Argentina 111-74 in an exhibition game in Las Vegas, back when even rival teams seemed to be conceding gold to the Americans.

Nobody is doing that now.

“When we played them a month ago, I said what I thought it was. We weren’t there, we couldn’t compete,” Scola said. “A month went by, I don’t know, maybe they didn’t play that well this month, they got a little comfortable and play a little worse. Maybe we got better this month and the difference is much smaller. Maybe.

“It’s just one game, anything can happen. But we don’t think it’s going to be easy.”

Nor do the Americans, still thinking of what Argentina used to be, instead of the team it is now.

Ginobili is 39 and Scola 36, almost certainly playing in their last Olympics, and the aging Argentines looked out of gas Monday when they were

blown out by Spain, two days after needing two overtimes to outlast Brazil, 111-107. They lack size to match the Americans’ tandem of DeMarcus Cousins and DeAndre Jordan – the 6-foot-8 Scola often has to play center – and at times in the exhibition rout it appeared the U.S. could keep grabbing offensive rebounds until it finally scored.

But inside Carioca Arena 1, which has been filled with so much light blue and white during Argentina’s games that it resembles clouds in the sky, the Americans believe their undersized opponents will stand tall.

“They match up with anybody in that they will put their heart, their soul and their bodies out on the court against you, and anybody that does that has a chance to win,” Krzyzewski said. “And I’ve never seen an Argentina team go on the court not thinking that they could win and we expect that from them.”

The U.S. teams that won gold in 2008 and 2012 overpowered Argentina in the semifinals, but those teams were loaded with All-NBA players. This is just an NBA team, not an All-NBA one, not after players such as LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Russell Westbrook stayed home.

With good reason: It had a diamond ring in it.

Moments after earning a silver medal Tuesday, Claye bounded into the stands, dropped to a knee and proposed to his longtime girlfriend, hurdler Queen Harrison.

She said yes.

A medal and a marriage proposal – now that’s quite a day.

“When I woke up this morning I was like, ‘Today is going to be the best day of my life,’” said Claye, who finished behind good friend Christian Taylor, as the two Americans went 1-2 for a second straight Summer Games. “I’m going to go out there and do what I have to do on the track first and I am going to make her my fiancée after that.”

RIO DE JANEIRO – Robson Conceicao couldn’t step up onto a medal podium without thinking about where his climb began.

His mind is never far from his impoverished neighborhood, where he discovered and honed a boxing talent that finally lifted him all the way into Brazilian sports history.

The lightweight won Brazil’s first Olympic boxing gold medal Tuesday night, delighting a frenzied home audience with a unanimous decision over France’s Sofiane Oumiha.

That’s how the quest began for his final individual sprint gold at the Olympics – a jog through the sunshine in the opening round of the 200 meters and a stress-free victory in the ninth heat of Tuesday’s qualifying.

He finished in 20.28 seconds, a time that means nothing. More importantly, he coasted into the finish line after triple-checking on Nigeria’s Ejowvokoghene Oduduru simply to make sure nothing crazy was happening.

Granola bars help kids power through first week back to school AP photo

Once upon a time, my Indian grandma was left in charge of packing school lunches for my sisters and me.

We were sent off to school with some potato curry and a garlic chutney so fierce my eyebrows twitched on the bus all the way to school and I couldn’t bear to open the Tupperware in fear of what might be unleashed on my friends.

After that, I outlawed traditional Indian food in my packed lunches, setting my mother free to get creative with Anglo-Indian dishes that became family favorites.

This granola bar using dates, coco-

nut and peanuts is among the recipes she created. It doesn’t use sugar, instead relying on dates and honey as sweeteners. The dates add a lovely fudgy texture and the oats and peanuts give slow release energy which will keep your kids (and you) going for a few hours. Cinnamon and ginger, in a nod to India, are used in small amounts to add a hint of warmth and extra flavor.

Mum used to make it in big batches on a Sunday and fill the house with the most divine smells, which would creep under the door while I was doing my homework. For the rest of the week, I’d look forward to packed lunches knowing what I was going to get.

Date, Coconut and Peanut Granola Bar Start to finish: 40 minutes Servings: 16

1¼ sticks butter, unsalted 1 cup dates, pitted and chopped 1/3 cup honey, plus more to drizzle 1½ teaspoons ground ginger 1 cup desiccated coconut 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 2 cups rolled oats 1/2 cup roasted unsalted peanuts, chopped

ginger and cinnamon to a deep saucepan and heat over a low flame until butter and honey melt, stirring occasionally.

Stir in the oats and chopped peanuts until mixed, then spread evenly into the baking pan. Pat the top down with a spoon to smooth the top and drizzle with honey.

Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until brown and firm on top. Cool before cutting into squares.

These bars will keep for up to a week in an airtight tin.

For the salsa 12 ounces grape tomatoes or ripe Roma tomatoes 1/2 to 2/3 cup diced or chopped red onion (from 1/2 medium onion), rinsed in cold water and patted dry 1/2 cup seeded, diced or chopped red bell pepper (from 1/2 pepper) 1/3 cup chopped fresh pineapple 2 cloves garlic (germ removed), minced

For serving Corn tortillas or romaine lettuce leaves (for wraps) Shredded lettuce (romaine or iceberg; may substitute shredded cabbage) Hot sauce

For the salsa: If you’re using grape tomatoes, cut each one into quarters. For larger tomatoes, hull them, cut them in half then cut them into large dice.

Toss the tomatoes and whatever juices are on the cutting board into a mixing bowl. Add the red onion (to taste), red bell pepper, pineapple, garlic, jalapeño, lime juice and the salt; toss to incorporate; taste and add more jalapeño, lime juice, salt and hot sauce, if using.

For the avocado mash: Combine the lime zest and juice in a medium bowl, then stir in a pinch of salt and the jalapeño.

Add the avocado and press with a fork to form a chunky mash, making sure the juice is well distributed.

For the shrimp: Toss together the shrimp, oil, Old Bay Seasoning or chili powder, salt and lime juice in a medium bowl.

Heat a large skillet, preferably nonstick, over medium-high heat. Add the shrimp mixture; cook, turning the shrimp once, just until they are pink, opaque and cooked through, 3 to 6 minutes (depending on how cold they were). Turn off the heat.

Wash and dry the bowl the raw shrimp were in; return the cooked shrimp to that bowl and squeeze a little lime juice over them.

When ready to serve, put separate bowls of the salsa, avocado mash, shrimp, tortillas or romaine leaves, shredded lettuce and hot sauce on the table. Just before serving, stir the cilantro into the salsa.

For healthy back-to-school cooking, try a foil pack in the oven

Social media tells me in part of the country, kids already are back to school. And so we are teetering between the lazy days of summer and the impending promise of crisp cool air, long sleeves and the desire to fire down the grill and turn on the oven instead.

This is the perfect time to talk about one of my favorite shoulder-season cooking strategies: the foil pack. Place thinly sliced veggies with a little marinade or vinaigrette (even store-bought will work) in a large sheet of heavy-duty aluminum foil and fold shut into a packet, pinching the edges, and this handy little guy will be equally delicious whether cooked on the grill if you have

a hot fall day, or in the oven, if you’re already in pumpkin latte weather.

Add some fish or chicken, and you’ll have a full meal, all packaged and pretty in individual servings, a presentation which thrills dinner party guests and kiddos alike.

Foil-Pack Fish Tacos Start to finish: 30 minutes Servings: 4

Juice of 1 lime, about 2 tablespoons 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon chili powder 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon granulated garlic 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 4 fillets of Alaskan cod, frozen

1 yellow onion, sliced thinly (about 2 cups) 2 sweet peppers (red, yellow or orange), sliced thinly (about 2 cups total) Spicy slaw topping: 2 cups chopped or sliced cabbage 1/4 cup plain Greek lowfat yogurt 1 tablespoon mayonnaise 1/2 teaspoon chipotle chili powder 1 tablespoon lime juice 1 chopped green onion 1/4 cup chopped cilantro Chopped tomatoes, for garnish (optional) Salt and pepper 8 corn tortillas, for serving Cubed avocado, for garnish Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. In a large bowl, mix together the lime juice, olive oil, chili

powder, cumin, garlic and salt. Cut four 12-inchby-12-inch pieces of heavy duty foil. Dip the fish into the marinade and set aside. Toss the onion and peppers in the marinade to coat, and divide among the foil squares. Place the fish on top.

Close the foil into packets, crimping the edges together. Place on a baking sheet and bake until fish is cooked through and vegetables are tender, about 30 minutes. (Subtract 10 minutes if using fresh fish).

Meanwhile, mix together all the ingredients for the spicy slaw topping. Serve one foil packet a person, along with corn tortillas, slaw for topping and avocado if desired.

I probably serve salsa twice a week, particularly in warmer weather. I make mango salsa for chicken and roasted salmon, avocado salsa for all kinds of grilled fish, strawberry salsa for beets and mozzarella, and bell pepper-celery salsa for just about everything. Those are all what I think of as pick-up dishes: I pick up whatever’s in the refrigerator or ripening on the counter; cut it into small dice; add onion, tomatoes, seasonings, herbs if I’ve got them, a little oil and a lot of citrus juice or vinegar. I never measure. I always taste as I go. And I never make the same thing exactly the same way twice.

I also have never made salsa’s fresh and less-juicy cousin, pico de gallo, which is Spanish for “rooster’s beak.” Or if I did, I didn’t know I was doing it. In fact, I hadn’t thought about the fresh relish since forever, and then I had it three days in a row and wanted to have it every day thereafter.

At home, I put my latest salsa over freekeh, of course, and also over quinoa and brown rice. All good. But my favorite combo was grilled corn tortilla, shredded cabbage or lettuce, avocado mash, shrimp sautéed with Old Bay Seasoning and lime, with the pineapple salsa.

Whatever you do, do it casually. You could make up the tortillas or wraps in the kitchen, but I wouldn’t. Put out all the colorful ingredients on the table and get messy. It’s part of what makes this dish so appealing and family-friendly.

$12,000 goes to those pursuing careers in health-related fields DAILY CHRONICLE The Valley West Hospital Auxiliary recently awarded $12,000 in health care career scholarships to deserving students in the area.

The following students received a Valley West Auxiliary Healthcare Scholarship: Kaitlyn Rexford, from Earlville, attending Aurora University, pursuing a degree in nursing; Margaret Fraser, from Sandwich, attending Concordia University Wisconsin, pursuing a degree in occupational therapy; Megan Malone, from Newark, attending Illinois Wesleyan University, pursuing a degree in nursing; and Blair Wright, from Sandwich, attending University of Illinois Chicago, College of Medicine, pursuing a degree in medicine. Wright also received the James Henry, MD, Award.

In 1987, Dr. James Henry, an anatomic pathologist who now practices in Fairfax, Virginia, received a health care scholarship from the Sandwich Hospital Auxiliary.

Earlier this year, he donated $2,000 back to the Valley West Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship Fund as a way to pay it forward to assist another health care student.

28 Blood sugar can be too low in older diabetics Dear Dr. K: I’m in my early 80s. I recently was put on a new type of medication for Type 2 diabetes. Since then, I’ve felt lightheaded a few times and also have fallen twice. Could my blood sugar be dropping too low? What should I do?

Dear Reader: Yes, your blood sugar could be dropping too low. If you’re in your early 80s, you might be at extra risk, because people at that age often have multiple chronic medical conditions.

It’s impossible for the doctor to predict exactly how an individual will respond to a new medicine. It may be this new medicine is having a stronger effect in you than it does in most people. So you absolutely should contact your doctor.

There’s something else to consider. For many years, the goal in treating diabetes has been to get blood sugar as low as possible. The stronger the medicine, or the stronger the dose, the more likely it is the sugar may go too low.

New studies in recent years challenge the value of trying to push blood sugar as low as possible, particularly in older people with the most common type of diabetes, Type 2. The studies find less benefit from having blood sugars as low as possible in older people. Why? Because health benefits from tight control come many years later.

In contrast, the dangers from blood sugar dropping too low (hypoglycemia) start right away. Those dangers include falls, fractures, head injuries and even problems with memory and thinking if hypoglycemia occurs often.

am a 40-year-old man, divorced with teenage children, and have been exclusively dating a woman who has a 4-year-old daughter. There have been no clashes between our children.

We have yet to have sex. When I’m over at her place, I sleep on the living room floor either on an inflatable air mattress (her idea) or in a sleeping bag (my response when I just couldn’t take the air mattress any longer). Either way, I feel like I’m left to sleep on a dog bed – not great for my self-esteem, as you can imagine.

My girlfriend uses her daughter as the reason, suggesting the girl just wouldn’t understand me sleeping in Mommy’s bed. I personally don’t see it as being a big issue for her daughter, given how long we have been together. We have discussed the subject, and she makes reference to perhaps planning some sort of rendezvous, but it never seems to go from theory to practice.

There are no religious issues here. My girlfriend did have a promiscuous and troubled past as a young adult, so I’m sensitive to the issue. But this is driving me nuts. Any suggestions would be appreciated. – On Hold In New

I am writing this column straight after Roger Federer lost to Milos Raonic in the semifinal of Wimbledon last month. Federer was another commentator victim. At 5-6 in the fourth set, Federer was ahead 40-0. A commentator said that this was just what Federer wanted, an easy service game to get into the tiebreaker. A couple of minutes later, Raonic had won the game and set, then he ran away with the fifth set.

By now, you would think commentators would know not to make an observation like that.

In today’s deal, one analyst said that six spades could be made if West leads the diamond queen, but not if he chooses the heart eight. Is that correct?

When North replied five hearts to South’s Blackwood inquiry, East made a lead-directing double.

If East had not doubled, West would surely have led the diamond queen, which would have given South an easy run. He would have taken the trick, drawn trumps, and run the club queen. The finesse would have lost, but declarer would have had the rest of the tricks.

It does seem as though the heart lead is fatal, but not if South plays carefully. He wins East’s heart queen with his ace, draws trumps, cashes his diamond ace, plays a diamond to dummy’s king, and ruffs the last diamond on his hand. Then he exits with his remaining heart. East takes the trick but is endplayed, having either to lead away from the club king or to concede a ruff-and-sluff (on which South discards a club).
