Attack of the school supplies list POLL Kids aren’t stupid. They can sniff out the end of summer vacation from three weeks away, which to them smells a lot like oppressed serfdom sprinkled with bits of drama.

On the other hand, to parents, there’s nothing sweeter than the aroma of an approaching nine-month parental reprieve. Mom and Dad find themselves joyously standing at the corner of “Have a great day!” and “Thank goodness!” as overstuffed backpacks with legs head out the door and into the welcoming arms of free public education.

But what’s in those bulky backpacks? It seems that nowadays kids need to bring so much stuff to school that it appears they are preparing more for an assault on Mount Everest than an educational experience. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were hauling carabiners and grappling hooks amid their paper and pencils …

“Hey Steve, ready for math class?”

“Yep, got 50 feet of static rope and a belay device.”

Back in the day, things were a bit different.

To be sure, there were no backpacks, but we didn’t need them. We could carry everything we needed for the first day of school in an old cigar box. And when we got to class, the teacher actually GAVE us all a box of crayons, a pair of scissors, an eraser, a ruler and a jar filled with a glob of white paste that tasted like hummus-flavored mayonnaise.

We also were each given a No. 2 pencil.

The teacher said that this was the best kind of pencil for school, but I asked her that if it was so good, why isn’t it No. 1? She then moved me and my desk to a corner, took back my pencil and told me to play with my paste.

But today, things are different. Parents are now given lists of the supplies they must send with their children. Over the years these lists have grown until they resemble an inventory audit of Staples.

Take, for example, a kindergarten supply list for this upcoming school year. Now, this list is a bit of a culture shock coming from a former kindergartner whose only memories of that experience were drinking a carton of warm milk and taking naps on the linoleum floor cushioned by an old bath towel.

But, oh boy, are things different now! Here’s just a portion of the list …

Especially the two T-shirt part.

The only thing more overwhelming than the bewildering quantity of supplies is the cost.

Plus, in many cases, all the individual purchases are stockpiled into a classroom community socialist larder that resembles Savers on discount day.

Maybe I’m just a crabby old man, resistant to change and disgruntled with the way things are. But, then again, maybe I should rally around the idea of a supply list to submit to my wife …

New teacher, new technology plans as G-K kicks off new school year

Monday at Genoa-Kingston High School, and in addition to welcoming hundreds of students, the Cogs welcomed new math teacher Ethan Franklin.

“Mr. Franklin came pretty highly recommended from everywhere, so we’re excited to get him,” Principal Brett McPherson said.

Genoa-Kingston School District 424 is the first district in DeKalb County to start the 2016-17 school year. Districtwide, more than 1,700 students were welcomed back to classrooms in five school buildings.

Monday also marked the first day

of Superintendent Joe Burgess’ final year with the school district. He is set to retire next spring after nine years of leadership.

At the high school, Franklin will be teaching pre-calculus and trigonometry. This will be his second year teaching, after graduating in 2009 from DeKalb High School and getting his degree in math education in 2015 from Northern Illinois University.

He taught last school year at Byron Middle School in the Ogle County town of the same name. Franklin said he’s glad to be back home.

“Now that I’m, kind of, making an impact on the community that I grew up in, it’s really kind of a cool and humbling experience for me,” Franklin said. “I want to make an impact and set them up for college. When

I was teaching eighth grade, it was to set them up for high school. Now, in high school, I want to make sure I’m setting these kids up for the real world.”

Franklin also was a shooting guard at Kishwaukee College for two years and will bring his love for that game to GKHS, too. He spent part of the summer getting to know members of the Cogs squad, he said, and he will be the head freshman basketball coach and an assistant coach on the varsity team, “I got to know a lot of the kids I’m already going to have in class and on the court before school started. So that was great for me,” said Franklin, who wouldn’t mind being called “Coach.”

In the classroom, Franklin and

his colleagues will get teaching aid starting this school year from the district’s expanded technology program.

The high school students, for the first time, will be issued Chromebooks as part of their instruction experience.

The Google-based laptops were previously given to elementary and middle school kids.

“We’re just trying to give our kids every opportunity to succeed in life after high school, and it seems like using technology will be a big part of that for them,” McPherson said.

The principal said another new thing this year will be transitioning from ACT preparation to SAT. The state board of education has switched to using that college entrance exam for all the Illinois public school districts after decades with ACT.

2 deaths reported at home on Old State Road DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – Officials released little information Monday night about an investigation at a home on Old State Road east of Sycamore.

The road was blocked for part of the evening, but officials couldn’t be reached for comment about what was happening or if there was a danger to

the public.

Rockford TV station WREX, citing Illinois State Police officials, reported that “Northern Illinois law enforcement agencies have been put on notice from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office to be on the lookout for a car possibly involved in a double homicide.”

“According to ISP officials, a message alert went out at 6:45 p.m. Monday asking officers in the area to be on the look-

out for a white, 2010 Chevrolet Impala with four doors,” the station reported.

Local radio station WLBK reported that police were investigating the deaths of two people at a home on Old State Road.

DeKalb County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan told WGN that police were investigating a double homicide.

It reported that deputies and Sycamore police responded to a home at 16058 Old

State Road.

DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller said he had no information about what had happened when reached at home at 9:30 p.m. Monday.

DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office officials couldn’t immediately be reached for comment late Monday night.

A dispatcher said a news conference was scheduled for this morning, but couldn’t provide further details.

Teachers, D-428 to vote on tentative deal this week

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – While members of both the teachers union and the DeKalb School District 428 Board believe a strike is unlikely after a tentative deal was reached Friday, the union still filed an intent to strike notice – just in case.

“Even more so than before, we should make very, very clear that it’s just a precautionary measure. Especially now with the tentative agreement in place, it seems very likely that we’re going to avoid [a strike] all together,” said T.J. Fontana of the DeKalb Classroom Teachers’ Association, which represents 430 teachers and other professionals in the school district.

Contract negotiations stretched well into the night Friday after earlier in the day – and even in the weeks be-

fore – the DCTA and the district both reported being far apart. Just before midnight, the two sides emerged with a tentative agreement for a three-year contract.

“I couldn’t tell you for sure what the logjam was or where it really opened. It just all of sudden started to work, which happens,” said Jim Bormann, District 428 human resources director, who was part the school board negotiating team.

The teachers’ existing contract expired Monday.

Each side has said no details of the new deal will be released until after teachers and the full school board have voted to accept it. Bormann said the school board won’t discuss it in open or closed session during Tuesday’s regularly scheduled meeting.

“Both sides showed the ability to compromise and come together,” Fontana said. “I think we got something

that accomplished both some of the board goals and what DCTA was hoping to accomplish.”

Bormann said Tuesday’s school board meeting still will take place at DeKalb High School because the contract deal came too late to change the meeting venue. The location was changed in the first place because the district expected a crowd.

Teachers are scheduled to hold a meeting Wednesday evening to ratify the proposal, Fontana said. District 428 Superintendent Doug Moeller said in an email to parents over the weekend that the school board would meet to vote on the offer after the teachers hold their session.

The school board and the union reached an impasse weeks ago, with each side unable to come up with a suitable plan the other would agree on, related to salary increases, benefit payments, classroom size contain-

ment and other issues.

“We were far apart,” Bormann said. “But you think you’re going nowhere and then all of sudden, it’s done.”

Fontana said the union filed a 28day notice of intent to strike July 27, as part of meeting mandatory deadlines so it could retain its strike rights. He also said that, although a tentative deal has been reached, the union filed a 10-day intent to strike notice Friday in case teachers don’t approve the proposal.

“They did go ahead and follow the process,” Bormann said. “It was handed to me personally, and [union representatives] made a point of saying ‘this was just to protect our rights.’ ” School district officials and ones from the union expect that both sides will approve the tentative agreement and that school will start on time Aug. 24.

Back Country Roads has played at events such as Country Thunder and opened for national acts such as Phil Vassar, Darryl Worley, David Lee Murphy, Neal McCoy, Steel Magnolia, Keith Anderson and Easton Corbin. They play mostly current Top 40 country hits, with a few older selections and some originals in the mix as well.

Johnny & The Boomers will open the festival playing Chicago blues and rock ’n’ roll favorites. And DJ Toxic will play tunes in between the two bands.

Nathan was an avid Green Bay Packers fan, loved riding his motorcycles and spending time with his family, children and his friends at Lake Louise. He was looking forward to his upcoming wedding, set for March 2017, to his beautiful fiancée, Kathleen Brust. The downtown DeKalb staple has been reincarnated by several owners over the past decade. It was most recently owned by Cortland couple and longtime cafe patrons Brian and Alex

DeKalb Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Matt Duffy said it was tough to lose a business, especially one that attracted such a diverse crowd to downtown DeKalb.

The House Cafe, he said, had helped fill a void in the area by offering all kinds of music and open mic nights. He said he hopes to see the business return as it has in the past.

Firefighters responded to a 4 a.m. call for a fire at 1120 Varsity Boulevard in DeKalb, according to a fire department news release.

Smoke was coming from a front door in the building when firefighters arrived, according to the release, prompting the

evacuation. They went on to discover the fire on the first floor of the building.

After extinguishing the fire, an investigation revealed it was an electrical fire started by a fan motor that was in a heater located in the building’s entryway. There were no injuries and

residents were not displaced, according to the release.

The fire caused about $20,000 worth of damage, fire officials indicated. Fire departments from Sycamore, Cortland, Malta and Genoa-Kingston assisted.

Plans for propane facility draw concerns

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Residents have raised safety concerns about a Morris-based company’s proposal to build a propane distribution facility at the northeast corner of Route 64 and Five Points Road.

Dibble Family LLC is seeking a special-use permit from DeKalb County to allow a propane distribution facility at 25330 Five Points Road on agricultural land in unincorporated Mayfield Township, about a mile from Sycamore and two miles from DeKalb, according to county documents.

During a public hearing on the request earlier this month, eight people spoke in opposition to the proposal. Most cited safety concerns.

Dibble Family LLC wants to renovate the existing building on the 2.77-acre site and build two 30,000-gallon propane tanks on the northeast corner of the property. A fence would be built to enclose the tanks and office areas. The facility would be used to serve the company’s existing DeKalb County customers. About 90 percent of the company’s customers are farmers and agriculture businesses, according to the proposal.

Hearing Officer Ronald Klein has recommended the company’s petition for a special-use permit to allow the facility be denied. He cited safety concerns, including a recent seven-alarm fire at a propane facility in Gurnee, along with the proposed use hurting neighboring property values, among other reasons, in his Findings of Fact report from the public hearing.

Ron Dibble, principal of Dibble Family LLC, said the proposed facility meets the county’s zoning requirements and should be granted. He estimated that he planned to invest $300,000 to $400,000 in the facility. He also said that many homeowners’ concerns would be assuaged by additional education regard-

“We want to invest in DeKalb County,” he said. “We’re going to be a good neighbor.”

Nearby property owners have opposed the plan. Lorri Thrower, who lives on Old State Road, said her main concerns were safety and property values.

“There’s got to be a better place for it,” she said. “Having it by all these houses isn’t a good idea.”

Klein’s recommendation for denial next goes to the DeKalb County Planning & Zoning Committee. The committee is scheduled to consider the matter at a meeting at 7 p.m. Aug. 24. The committee can recommend to the DeKalb County Board approval, approval with conditions, or denial. The full board would have the final say on the project, county Planning Zoning & Building Director Paul Miller said.

The County Board could consider the matter at its Sept. 21 meeting, Miller said.

DeKalb County Board Vice Chairman Tracy Jones, a Republican from District 1 who serves on the Planning & Zoning Committee, said it would be difficult for him to support the proposal in light of the recommendation of the hearing officer and after hearing from constituents.

Jones, who lives 100 yards from an 18,000-gallon propane tank that is serviced by Dibble, spoke in favor of the project at the public hearing. He said the company has an impeccable safety record. Furthermore, he said the county needs to diversify its tax base. However, he also said he understands the concerns of those who live near the proposed facility.

“It’s a tough situation. DeKalb County needs to be business-friendly, but we keep saying ‘no,’ ” Jones said. “But the big problem was safety concerns. I pay attention to what people want. It would be difficult to vote in favor when all these people are opposed to it.”

The Chicago Tribune reported that the $1.5 million in payments started coming in shortly before this year’s fair started last week and as Gov. Bruce Rauner tries to put a greater emphasis on the annual agriculture celebration.

Last year, more than 850 vendors who do tasks such as providing first aid, judging sheep shearing, shooting off fireworks and running the tractor pull contest weren’t paid. The stopgap budget means vendors are scheduled to be paid on time this year.

CHICAGO – A federal magistrate judge said Monday that he will not immediately rule on a dispute at a suburban Chicago school district over transgender student access to girls’ locker rooms and restrooms.

Although the timeline is unclear, U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeffrey Gilbert said he will eventually issue a report with his recommendation on an injunction to U.S. District Judge Jorge Alonso.

The conservative group Students and Parents for Privacy filed a lawsuit on behalf of dozens of parents with links to Palatine-based Township High School District 211. The lawsuit argues federal authorities forced the district to adopt a policy that tramples on the privacy rights of other students.

Fremd High School in Palatine drew attention to the issue in November when she complained to the U.S. Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights that she was denied access to facilities for the gender she identifies with. In response, federal authorities found the school district in violation of Title IX, the federal law that bans discrimination based on gender.

The district in December allowed the student access to restrooms and locker rooms to settle the complaint. The settlement allowed the district to keep millions in federal funding and forgo possible legal action.

Trooper’s vehicle strikes, kills man on highway

EAST PEORIA – Authorities said an Illinois State trooper’s vehicle struck and killed a Freeport man who was walking in the middle of a highway in East Peoria.

Illinois State Police said the incident happened early Saturday on Route 116.

The Tazewell County Coroner’s Office identified the man as 44-year-old Jarett J. Simons of Freeport.

Authorities said a preliminary inves-

tigation found the trooper was driving in the left lane when the vehicle struck Simons. The highway isn’t illuminated in that area.

Officials said the trooper didn’t have time to react before the vehicle struck Simons. The trooper wasn’t hurt. He wasn’t identified.

Simons’ brother, Greg Simons, said he last saw Jarett Simons on Thursday and didn’t know why he was in East Peoria.

The case is under investigation.

Illinois crew battles forest fires in Idaho, Oregon

WILMINGTON – A northern Illinois firefighting crew that was deployed to fight a blaze in the Boise National Forest has now moved to work on a fire in Oregon.

The Midewin Interagency Hotshot Crew is on its eighth two-week assignment this year. The fire near Burns, Oregon, will be the group’s last mission for 2016.

The 20-person crew uses helicopter operations, chain saws, pumps and engines to fight fires. They have battled blazes already this season in Montana and Arizona.

The group is hosted by the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie in Wilmington, located about 60 miles southwest of Chicago. The team is administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Crew members typically work 16-hour days while on assignment, returning home for two days off before heading back to work.

E. St. Louis school replaces windows after vandalism

EAST ST. LOUIS – A Catholic school in East St. Louis has raised $100,000 to replace windows that were broken by vandals a year ago.

The Belleville News-Democrat reported that Sister Thea Bowman Catholic School raised the money after windows were broken in the science and computer labs.

School officials said the new windows will provide more security, be energy efficient and provide shade control.

Roberta Trost is a director at the school.

Trost said the school also is raising money to replace all the other windows at the school.

Trump wants ‘extreme vetting’ of immigrants

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Donald Trump on Monday called for “extreme” ideological vetting of immigrants seeking admission to the U.S., vowing to significantly overhaul the country’s screening process and block those who sympathize with extremist groups or don’t embrace American values.

“Those who do not believe in our Constitution, or who support bigotry and hatred, will not be admitted for immigration into our country,” Trump said in a foreign policy address in Youngstown, Ohio.

“Only those who we expect to flourish in our country – and to embrace a tolerant American society – should be issued visas.”

Trump’s proposals were the latest version of a policy that began with his unprecedented call to temporarily bar foreign Muslims from entering the country – a religious test that was criticized across party lines as un-American.

The Republican nominee has made stricter immigration measures a central part of his proposals for defeating the Islamic State, a battle he said Monday is akin to the Cold War struggle against communism. He called for parents, teachers and others to promote “American culture” and encouraged “assimilation.”

Trump’s address comes during a trying stretch for his presidential campaign. He’s struggled to stay on message and build a consistent case against Democrat Hillary Clinton, repeatedly roiling the White House race with provocative comments that have deeply frustrated many in his own party.

Russia and the U.S. have been discussing greater coordination in Syria, where IS is part of a volatile mix of groups fighting for power. But they have been unable to reach an agreement on which militant groups could be targeted.

Trump also vowed to end “our current strategy of nation-building and regime change” – a criticism that extends to policies of both parties. Trump’s most specific anti-Islamic State proposals centered on keeping those seeking to carry out attacks in the West from entering the U.S. He said attacks involving “immigrants or the children of immigrants” underscore the need to implement “extreme vetting.”

The shop hosted its grand opening July 13, but Foster said he believes Northern Illinois University’s student body could help further the message of creativity and acceptance he is working to establish.

“I want to see the creative kids touched and find mentors for them,” Foster said. “I’m thinking we’ll develop that after school starts, maybe with some students who are ready to graduate. They can come and plug in and talk to seventh- through 10th-graders, for instance, and encourage them.”

Common Grounds also serves as one of the area’s only book sellers.

Customers are free to browse or buy the new and used books, ranging in price from $1 to $15. Anyone who buys a book will receive $1 off any drink purchase or $1 off three drinks if they bring a friend to the shop.

World Robotic Olympiad

There’s really never a dull moment in the DCCVB office. We are the first point of contact for leisure visitors, business travelers and event planners. Most of the time we are working with event organizers anywhere from six to 18 months in advance of their arrival to ensure they have a successful event.

Currently, we are working with the Wong Foundation, the national organizer for World Robotic Olympiad-USA. They have selected the NIU Convocation Center as the site for their National Championship. We are expecting 100 to 150 families from across the United States on Sept. 2 through 5.

Planting seeds as school year gets underway The last half of the calendar year is not typically a time one thinks about starting anew – that mentality is usually associated with the spring and the growth that comes with it.

But August is truly a time of planting seeds – at least in the minds of local students.

The first districts in Will and Grundy counties area head back to class Monday, with others starting throughout the week and a few next week. The signs of that are everywhere: From the school supply displays in area stores to the teachers who have been setting up classrooms in buildings recently cleaned by area custodians, it’s evident we’re on the cusp of a new academic year.

Whether you’re a parent wondering how your child will do this year, an educator aiming to plan that perfect first day or a student hoping they will be seated next to a best friend, there likely is some anxiety as that first day approaches.

But there also is a sense of excitement, as a new school year also comes with the hope that this could be the best grade level yet.

That hope can be realized if all involved takes on a team mentality, with every member committed to providing a successful educational experience.

Teachers have to plan engaging lessons and provide opportunities for all students to explore different ways to learn. Administrators need to implement goals that can be met. School boards need to be good stewards of tax dollars. State lawmakers need to make sure any new laws they pass do not add any more unfunded mandates to already taxes districts.

Parents need to partner with educators by making sure their child does homework, is attentive and respectful in class, and encourage them to do their best.

And the students themselves are more than just passengers along the way – in many ways, they should be the drivers on their educational journey.

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.”

That is sage advice from the incomparable Dr. Seuss. Students have the power to have a great school year be investing in their education by participating in class, engaging in extracurricular activities and setting personal goals to continually add to their body of knowledge.

Our wish is that the excitement and hope that permeates that first day of class remains throughout the year, and the seeds planted now yield a great crop when students hear the final bell of the 2016-17 academic year.

Strongmen blame foreign ‘enemies’ for troubles One of the enduring rules of autocracy is that a strongman must not admit something is amiss inside the kingdom.

Instead, troubles come from enemies outside.

This is often used to distract people from genuine woes at home, and while hardly new, it has been embraced with fresh enthusiasm by the latest generation of political strongmen. It betrays a paranoia and insecurity among those who boast of power and control.

In Turkey over the past few weeks, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has reacted to the failed July 15 coup attempt by looking for enemies abroad. He has pinned the revolt on his one-time ally, the Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen, who lives in Pennsylvania and denies being behind it. Erdogan has also blamed the CIA and the U.S. government, which deny any role. Erdogan has arrested hundreds of journalists, thousands of military officers and others in a massive crackdown that goes well beyond the coup plotters and seems certain to further cement his hold over Turkey’s future.

Inspired by Erdogan, the Turkish media have intensified a hunt for coup plotters. The latest spate of news articles ludicrously pointed the finger at Henri Barkey, director of the Middle East Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. Barkey had organized a small conference at an island near Istanbul on the theme of Iran and the region.

The conference invitations went out in the spring, long before the coup attempt, and it brought Turkish and other scholars together at a hotel just as the revolt unfolded. Recently, the Turkish media published wild stories claiming

that this meeting was somehow a clandestine command center for the coup attempt. The newspaper Yeni Safak declared that Barkey “was the second top American figure who orchestrated the coup attempt in Turkey.” The other was former commander of the NATO force in Afghanistan, Gen. John Campbell, the paper proclaimed.

These charges are wrong, and ridiculous. They represent a dangerous scapegoating, a practice also favored by Russian President Vladimir Putin, with whom Erdogan met this week. In February, Putin, who Wednesday seemed to be fomenting more trouble in Ukraine, told his security services that “foes abroad” are “getting prepared” to disrupt the parliamentary elections next month and any attempts “must be upset.” Putin still holds to the fallacy that Hillary Clinton, while secretary of state, sparked the mass street protests against him in 2011 and 2012, conveniently overlooking the fraudulent attempt to steal that election by his party.

In China recently, the human-rights lawyer Wang Yu was seen, after being in detention for a year, answering questions in a videotaped “confession.” She claims to have been led astray by foreigners whose aim was to attack and smear China. “I won’t be used by these people again,” she said in the video, which was probably scripted by the authorities.

No doubt, more foreign “enemies” will appear as democracy continues to retreat around the world. There is only one remedy – to call out illiberal strongmen on their fictions and, wherever possible, counter them with the truth.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Nationalism not necessarily a bad thing Google “Donald Trump” and “nationalism” and you’ll get more than 1 million results, the large percentage of which are, to judge from the top hits, negative. “Nationalism” is deemed to be bad stuff, maybe even akin to Nazism.

But is nationalism always so bad?

Not, it seems, for the millions of people around the world watching the Olympics. They watch as the TV networks keep track of the medal count – and they root for the men and women they see representing their nations.

Americans were thrilled to see Michael Phelps propel the U.S. team to gold in the freestyle relay and excited to watch 19-year-old Katie Ledecky destroy the field in the 400 meter freestyle.

People who watch gymnasts at only fouryear intervals were amazed at the skill of the 4-foot 9-inch Simone Biles.

News coverage in other countries has focused on their own athletes.

British front pages flashed pictures of record-breaking breaststroker Adam Peaty, mouthing the words of “God Save the Queen” as he held his gold medal.

Brazil’s TV Globo showed judo medalist Rafaela Silva, who grew up in a Rio favela, bow down on her knees to Brazilian fans in the stands.

Sports nationalism easily embraces ethnic and racial diversity, not only from historically biracial America and

VIEWS Michael Barone Brazil (which abolished slavery in 1865 and 1888) but also from European and other nations. One Olympic table-tennis match featured a Japanese-descended Brazilian and a Chinese-descended Congolese. People from nations with sharply divisive politics (not least our own) and suffering from economic setbacks and pervasive corruption, such as host Brazil, nonetheless find themselves united in rooting for their country’s athletes.

An elite globalist may scoff at the arbitrariness of national border and style himself “a citizen of the world,” as Barack Obama described himself before a massive crowd in Berlin in 2008. But most people don’t think of themselves that way. Nation-states inspire loyalties in a way the United Nations or the European Union have failed to do.

Nationalism, properly understood, can be a positive force, welding otherwise disparate people together to build a decent society, secure a competent government and rally to defend themselves against attack. Each nation has developed its own particular culture, its own manners and mores, its own rules,

written and unspoken.

An intelligent nationalist can respect the strengths of other nations, while preferring his own, just as an Olympics fan can appreciate the superb performance of athletes from other countries even while keeping an eye on the medal scoreboard.

The social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, writing in The American Interest, notes that as nations grow more prosperous, their elites become more globalist in outlook, and consider nationalism as blind prejudice or even racism. But, as he writes, “having a shared sense of identity, norms and history” – e.g., nationalism – “generally promotes trust.”

“Nationalists feel a bond with their own country, and they believe that this bond imposes moral obligations both ways,” he goes on. “Citizens have a duty to love and serve their country, and governments are duty bound to protect their own people.”

This is a principle that Donald Trump, in between off-the-cuff gaffes and self-harming diversions, affirms.

Nations have boundaries and owe greater duties to their citizens than to foreigners. They have no obligation to open their borders entirely. It is not racist, Haidt argues, to bar those “whom they perceive as having values that are incompatible with their own, or who (they

believe) engage in behaviors they find abhorrent, or whom they perceive to be a threat to something they hold dear.”

Hillary Clinton takes a different view.

She would not deport any noncriminal illegal immigrant, which amounts to a permanent open borders policy – as extreme a position as Trump’s now discarded ban on Muslim immigration.

Even Democrats at their national convention found it useful to sound nationalist themes, decrying Trump’s “dark” picture of America in his acceptance speech as somehow unpatriotic and, after conservative bloggers noted their supposed absence on the Democratic Convention’s first day, installing more prominent American flags on the stage.

And former Treasury Secretary and Obama adviser Lawrence Summers has called for “a responsible nationalism” which recognize government’s responsibility “to maximize the welfare of citizens, not to pursue some abstract concept of the global good.”

Evidently, nationalism, like rooting for your nation’s Olympians, is not necessarily a bad thing.

Overseas vacations become Trump apology tours

Are you suffering vacation envy?

I am. There’s the friend posting her photos from a cute villa in Provence. The neighbors sailing on a lake in Switzerland. The teacher hiking high above Cape Town. The former boss hanging out in Greece and Cuba with her students.

But guess what? Turns out they aren’t having as much fun as we thought. And it’s thanks to one man – Donald Trump.

Yep, this summer, an overseas vacation has become a relentless apology tour, and just about every American with a passport is being interrogated by the rest of the world about our bizarre presidential candidate.

“Two weeks abroad and I lost count of how many baffled Europeans asked us to explain Donald Trump,” tweeted Sherry Stern, a California magazine editor who found herself Trumpsplaining in London, Cambridge and Budapest.

Add another thing to the list of things Trump has stained.

Daunelle Wulstein, a childhood friend of mine from California who makes frequent trips to France for

business and pleasure, said the Trumpsplaining is especially intense this year because so many French admire President Obama.

“Obama helped gain our reputation back on the global stage,” Wulstein said.

The Donald, by comparison, isn’t sure about NATO and keeps expressing his admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Not good.

Heading across the Pacific instead of the Atlantic doesn’t help.

“The worst part about being abroad for four weeks is having to explain to people that most Americans are not like Trump. It’s embarrassing,” Californian Tom Pawlicki tweeted as he was returning from Hong Kong.

A Washington neighbor of mine who recently travelled to India, Vietnam and Cambodia said she was questioned about our election everywhere she went.

“People abroad seem afraid for themselves if Trump is elected,” she said. “In Cambodia or Vietnam we got a lot of questions about our love of guns. We met not a single person who thought Trump would be a good candidate.”

Even our neighbors up north – the ones who seem just like us except for

guns, poutine and good manners – are baffled by the meteoric rise of the real estate magnate and reality TV star.

“On vacation with Canadian friends,” reported Travis Bonnette-Kim, a United Methodist pastor from Massachusetts, on Twitter. “Trying to explain America’s obsession with Trump is hard. Mainly because I don’t understand it either!”

Of all those staycation summers, this one may not be so bad.

I already fulfilled my Trumpsplaining duties earlier this year on a family trip to Mexico.

“How are you going to come back for vacation if that Trumpman builds his wall?” asked one of the charming hotel employees we met in Yucatan, who taught us to say good morning (Ma’alob k’iin) and thank you (Ni’bo’olal) in his native Mayan.

Merrit Drucker was so mortified by the way Trump has talked about Mexico, he didn’t even leave the United States to launch an apology tour.

He lives in the nation’s capital so he wrote a letter to Mexico’s ambassador and had it notarized, trying to make it part of an official record to the Mexican people.

“I wish to extend an apology to you, your family, and the Mexican people for the unkind and inaccurate statements about the Mexican people, made recently

by Mr. Donald Trump, a Republican candidate for the President of the United States. These were unwarranted, gratuitously insulting, and not the hallmark of a Statesman,” wrote Drucker, 65, who once worked as a D.C. economic development official.

I checked with the embassies from other countries (long list) that Trump has insulted. None said they’ve received similar, official letters of apology from the U.S. citizenry. But folks in the diplomatic corps said they are often greeted by “I’m so sorry” from Americans they meet.

And they’re all working double-overtime, of course, trying to Trumpsplain for all their folks back home.

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Despite being the No. 2 seed heading into the Mid-American Conference Championship in 2015, the Ohio volleyball team got to play at home when it knocked off top-seeded Northern Illinois for the conference crown.

It was the Bobcats’ reward for winning the MAC during the 2014 regular season.

Now it’s the Huskies’ turn. Entering the 2016 season with plenty of returners from last year’s team that won the MAC’s regular-season title, they know they will be hosting the MAC tournament if they are one of the top eight seeds in the league.

“This is the first time that I’ve been here, that we’ve earned the right to host,” said NIU coach Ray Gooden, the reigning MAC Coach of the Year who is in his 15th season with the Huskies.

“When I first started, it was host institutions, but it was by bid. We went neutral for a while because that was the thing to do, then we went back to host institutions based on how you finished. Now it’s cool and this group accepted that. They’ve been really busting their butts and working hard this summer.”

The Huskies won the regular season in 2015 by going 14-2 during conference play, giving them the right to host the MAC tournament for the first time since 2001 – when they topped Ball State for the title. Against Ohio in the championship match in Athens last year, the Huskies fell in straight sets in front of a large Bobcats crowd.

“We’d go to Ohio and play the championship match and there’s 2,800 people there,” Gooden said of the crowd of 2,736. “It’s a big deal.

“They’re either going to play separately or together,” Gooden said. “It has to be in their hands, literally. That position is like the quarterback, so the more we can find stability in that spot, the better our team can be.”

The Huskies open the season with the NIU Invitational against DePaul at 7 p.m. Aug. 26, before hosting Loyola Chicago at 7 p.m. Aug. 27 and Iowa at 2 p.m. Aug. 28.

“He snuck up behind me and gave me a hug,” Miller said.

Quarterback Jay Cutler, of course, didn’t have a similar encounter. He didn’t share a moment with Bennett.

“No, I missed that opportunity,” Cutler wryly said. “Maybe tomorrow.”

RIO DE JANEIRO – The runner who blew the whistle on the doping scandal in Russia fears for her safety and has switched residences after hackers breached a database that records her whereabouts.

Yulia Stepanova and her husband, Vitaly, were the informers who detailed a state-run doping system in Russia that led to the ouster of the country’s athletes from the Olympic track meet.

Recently, their email was hacked and the password stolen for Stepanova’s account on a database controlled by the World Anti-Doping Agency. Like hundreds of athletes, Stepanova accesses

the WADA system to enter her whereabouts, so doping-control officers can find her if she’s selected for out-of-competition testing. The database contains personal contact information, such as phone numbers and addresses.

“If something happens to us, you should know it’s not an accident,” she said Monday in a videoconference with reporters. “We are trying to take every measure possible to keep ourselves safe, which is why we moved. At the same time, we realized if somebody really wanted to do something to us, they would probably succeed.”

Stepanova was part of the Russian doping system for years, but after being cast aside by the country’s track team, she and her husband,

a former worker for the Russian anti-doping agency, approached WADA with their information.

They moved to the United States, fearing a stay in Russia could lead to harm.

It took years for WADA to respond to their account. After an independent investigation, both that agency and track’s governing body, the IAAF, recommended Russia’s ouster from the Olympic track meet, but also said Stepanova’s own doping ban should be set aside so she could be eligible to compete in Rio de Janeiro this month. But the International Olympic Committee said no, ruling that because of her role

The Stepanovs said they don’t regret taking the whistleblower role. They didn’t spare criticism of the IOC and its president, Thomas Bach. Vitaly Stepanov labeled the committee’s offer to bring them to the Olympics to watch the games as VIP guests “a bribe.”

“They never tried to understand our situation,” Stepanova said. “They simply say whatever is going to serve them. Yes, I admitted I was part of that system. However, I decided I no longer wanted to be part of that system and I told the truth.”

Stepanova, 30, said the Olympic snub does not mark the end of her career. She will continue training with hopes of competing in races this winter.

In the meantime, she served up a chilling reminder about the stakes involved in being a whistleblower. WADA said only Stepanova’s password was stolen, and that it is monitoring the database to make sure the information is secure.

“I started getting anxious, wondering who needs this information,” she said. “So we decided it would be safer if we relocate.”

RIO DE JANEIRO – Seven people were injured Monday when an elevated TV camera plummeted more than 60 feet to the ground Monday in the Olympic park outside the basketball venue in the latest in a string of mishaps at the Rio Games.

The large camera is one of several suspended on cables to provide aerial views of the main Olympic Park. The Olympic Broadcasting Service said two guide cables on its camera snapped, causing it to fall to a lower concourse that feeds into the basketball stadium.

Chris Adams, a gymnastics fan from Britain, said he heard a cable snap and then watched as the camera fell and hit two women.

“It looked like a flying saucer coming through the air when it hit these two women,” Adams said. “This thing is big, and it shot through the air. It came down at such a speed that they wouldn’t

Felix edged by diving Miller American denied a record 5th gold

The Associated Press RIO DE JANEIRO – For beating Allyson Felix, Shaunae Miller gets a gold medal. Maybe they should give her a cape, too.

It took a head-first dive, Superwoman-style, for Miller to spring an Olympic upset Monday over America’s top female sprinter in the 400 meters and deny her a record fifth gold medal.

Miller, a 22-year-old from the Bahamas who finished second to Felix at the world championships last year, took an early lead, then held off her charge along the straightaway.

Neck-and-neck with two steps to go, MillShaunae Miller er sprawled, dove and tumbled across the line to win by .07 seconds.

Now, instead of a coronation for Felix, it’s a celebration for Miller, whose dive will go down as one of the most dramatic images Allyson Felix we’ve seen at these, or any, Olympics.

“This is the moment I have been waiting for,” Miller said. “I just gave it my all.”

And she didn’t even get the evening’s biggest roars. Those went to pole vaulter Thiago Braz da Silva, who gave Brazil its first medal in track and field by setting an Olympic record (19 feet, 91/4 inches) to upset world-record holder and defending champion Renaud Lavillenie of France.

But outside of Brazil, they’ll be talking about The Dive.

Starting from Lane 7, Miller expanded the lag, instead of getting gobbled up the way most women do when Felix is on the track.

Stride for stride they ran down the last 100 meters, until the last few steps.

Felix, classically trained by Bobby Kersee, made a textbook lean into the finish line. Miller tried something else. The dive is something no coach ever would teach. Then again, amazing things happen with a gold medal on the line.

“I was just focused on myself,” Felix said when asked about the dive. “I didn’t really have too many thoughts on it.”

As Miller lay on her back, gasping for breath and maybe even stunned herself at what she’d done, Felix sat on the ground stone-faced. Ten seconds passed. Then 20.

While Miller jumped with her arms flailing forward, the rules say the win is determined by which athlete has any part of her torso cross the line first. The photo finish showed the negative image of Miller’s sprawled-out body. Her shoulder barely beat Felix to the line.

The result popped up on the scoreboard: Miller won in 49.44 seconds. The bronze went to Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson.

What a finish. What a race.

It marked quite a disappointment for Felix, whose season just didn’t turn out the way she planned it.

“I don’t think I ever quite had a year this tough,” Felix said, as her eyes welled with tears.

She was one of those rare athletes who had the cachet to get the Olympics

to change the schedule. After winning the world championship at 400 meters last year, she put the 200-400 double in her sights for the Olympics. The schedule as it originally was written made it impossible: The 200 heats were scheduled for the same evening as the 400 final.

Felix asked, and she received: The 200 heats were moved to the morning to give America’s best female sprinter a chance for the two-fer.

But she never got to the starting line in the 200. She landed awkwardly on a medicine ball while doing core work in the gym during the spring and her ankle swelled up like a balloon.

Suddenly, what once was a quest for two golds transformed into a struggle to simply make the Olympic team. She did in the 400 but not in the 200. Then, Miller showed up and handed Felix her third Olympic disappointment. This silver goes with the pair she won in 2004 and 2008 in the 200.

Brazil is a step closer to gold, but Sweden comes first

The Brazilians are a step away from a shot at Olympic gold, and nothing could make the host nation’s fans happier.

Women’s soccer has not traditionally been popular in Brazil, but Marta and her teammates have been capturing hearts as they’ve traveled across the country en route to a semifinal match against Sweden on Tuesday.

But although Brazil is a win away from the gold-medal match, the team first will have to overcome a pumpedup Sweden team that knocked off the three-time defending champion United States in the quarterfinals.

The loss sent the top-ranked Americans home without a medal for the first time at the Olympics. The World Cup champions were vying for their third straight gold.

No one, Hernandez included, imagined she’d be part of it – a member of the 2016 U.S. Olympic gymnastics team, leaving Rio with a team gold medal in one pocket and an individual silver medal on balance beam in the other. Hernandez was still competing in the junior ranks in summer 2015, although she was a shining light in her peer group, with potential that caught everyone’s eye.

Hernandez progressed apace once elevated to the senior ranks, wowing U.S. national team coordinator Martha Karolyi with a third-place finish at nationals this summer and claiming silver at U.S. Olympic trials in July.

In Monday’s beam final, Hernandez was the sixth of eight gymnasts to compete.

“You got this! Just stay calm,” Biles whispered in her ear.

And with a wide smile to the judges, Hernandez hopped on the beam.

“Nice! Nice!” Karolyi cawed from the stands.

Shouts of “Yeah!” “You got it!” rained down from her family and friends on the U.S. men’s and women’s gymnastics teams.

“I think this is one of the best routines that I’ve showed in Rio,” Hernandez said afterward. “I’m just happy I could perform the way I do in practice and stay calm through the whole thing.”

Biles had an off-day, at least by her elevated standards.

“She is human,” said Aimee Boorman, Biles’s coach since she was 7. To Boorman’s eyes, Biles’s “save” on the somersault was a heroic feat and her performance, a triumph.

“She won a bronze medal on beam at the Olympics,” Boorman said. “That’s huge, and she should be proud of that.”

At last, the U.S. men’s volleyball team is playing the very brand of volleyball the Americans knew they had in them to make a special run at the Olympics. It just took a few days longer than expected to get going and find a winning groove.

They reached the quarterfinals Monday after that slow start, victors in their third straight match to conclude pool play by dominating Mexico, 25-23, 25-11, 25-19. Taylor Sander’s kill from the left side on match point sealed it.

He is one of several among the team’s eight first-time Olympians to make vast improvements the past three matches.

Wlodarczyk breaks hammer WR using friend’s glove

RIO DE JANEIRO – Every time Anita Wlodarczyk throws the hammer, she has a reminder right there with her of the friend she lost.

Wlodarcyk broke her own world record to win Olympic gold medal on Monday and she did it using the old, gray and tattered left glove of former champion and close friend Kamila Skolimowska.

Skolimowska, gold medalist at the 2000 Sydney Games as a teenager and the brightest star of hammer at the time, died in 2009 at the age of 26 after suffering a pulmonary embolism at a Poland team training camp in Portugal.

RIO DE JANEIRO – From the moment Simone Biles first stepped onto the floor 10 days ago at Rio Olympic Arena, she has been competing against herself. Such was the gulf between Biles’s skills and the rest of the gymnastics world that she graded herself in relation to her potential, happily leaving scoring to the judges.

Monday, after a strong, stylish start to her balance-beam routine, Biles, a two-time world medalist on the apparatus, didn’t get quite enough height on a front somersault. She under-rotated, as a result, hit one foot on the 4-inch-wide plank, wobbled precariously and managed to stay on by grabbing the beam with both hands to steady herself.

“Wow, Simone!” She thought to herself. “That was five-10ths” of a point-deduction. She quickly settled herself and completed the routine, earning a score (14.733) almost a full point lower than her qualifying mark (15.633).

No tearful outburst followed. She hugged her coach, took a seat and proceeded to cheer on her U.S. teammate and Rio roommate, 16-year-old Laurie Hernandez, the sixth beam competitor in the field of eight.

Only one year removed from gymnastics’ junior ranks, Hernandez sped through her difficult tumbling moves and connecting leaps and spins with a veteran’s poise. She was more solid than Biles – and better than all but Sanne Wevers of the Netherlands, who won gold (15.466). Hernandez (15.333) claimed silver. And Biles, who hadn’t even bothered to change into the long pants gymnasts wear to ascend the medal podium, so sure her marks didn’t deserve a medal, took bronze.

With it, Biles kept her Olympic medal-streak intact: four events, four medals. But it spoiled gymnastics’ most publicized pre-Olympic storyline: that the 19-year-old phenom from Spring, Texas, would leave Rio with five golds.

Asked whether she were disappointed that the much ballyhooed “Drive for Five” had fallen short, Biles said, “Not necessarily.” Then she put the horde of journalists who crowded around her, tape recorders and microphones outstretched, in its place.

“It’s something you guys shove into my head,” Biles said with a smile, “and at 19, I can’t put that much stress on myself because I am only 19. I think

CHICAGO – What the Cubs are calling an inadvertent musical choice has brought the team a public-relations headache, resulting in the firing Monday of a DJ at Wrigley Field.

The song “Smack My Bitch Up” by English band Prodigy was played in the middle of the ninth inning Sunday night at Wrigley Field after Cubs’ closer Aroldis Chapman, who was suspended this season for 30 games for an alleged domestic-violence incident involving his girlfriend, struck out the side.

The Cubs said in a statement Monday that they have terminated the employee responsible. The Cubs hired two DJs in 2015 to select music that is used during home games.

The NFL still is seeking an audience with the four linebackers it’s investigating for an alleged link to performance-enhancing drugs.

The league’s latest message to James Harrison, Clay Matthews, Mike Neal and Julius Peppers came with an ominous and onerous threat: Answer our questions in the next 10 days or start your suspension.

NFL senior vice president of labor policy and league affairs Adolpho Birch sent a letter Monday to the NFL Players Association detailing a plan to suspend Harrison, Matthews, Peppers and Neal if they don’t speak with the league by Aug. 25.

Their punishment would then start the next day on an indefinite basis, to be ended at the discretion of Commissioner Roger Goodell once an interview has been completed.

26 Lifestyle changes can improve low energy Dear Dr. K: I often feel quite tired. My doctor says this fatigue might be caused by my low-normal testosterone level. I’d rather not go on testosterone therapy. What are some other ways to enhance my energy?

Dear Reader: Research studies have not demonstrated a clear value in giving testosterone therapy to men who might be experiencing symptoms of low-normal or slightly low blood levels of testosterone.

In fact, some studies even have indicated such treatments may raise the risk of heart trouble. So I certainly can understand if you’d rather avoid testosterone therapy to relieve your fatigue.

The good news is lifestyle changes can go a long way toward improving your energy and overall health. I’ll describe some of them here.

• Eat for energy. Caffeine and sugar can give you a temporary lift. But when you eat a diet packed with vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains, healthy fats and lean protein, you not only consume the finest energy-boosting foods, but you also promote good health. That’s an energy booster in itself. And don’t forget water. If your body is short on fluids, one of the first signs is a feeling of fatigue.

• Exercise regularly. Exercise is a proven way to increase your vim and vigor. Aim for 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week or 75 minutes of vigorous activity, or a mix of the two. You’ll also want to engage in two to three strength-training sessions a week. Allow at least 48 hours between these muscle-building workouts to give your body time to recover.

• Get a better night’s sleep. Nothing saps your energy faster than a poor night’s rest.

Most ordinary sleep difficulties can be solved with simple behavioral changes. For example, use your bed only for sleeping or

And go to bed and get up at the same time every day, including weekends.

To get better sleep, avoid coffee or other caffeinated beverages or foods after noon; their effects in disrupting sleep can last for 12 to 16 hours. Also avoid more than one alcoholic drink after dinner. While alcohol can be an effective “nightcap,” helping you nod off more easily, later in the evening it acts as a stimulant, keeping you from getting enough deep sleep.

Finally, if you know or think you might suffer from sleep apnea or another sleep disorder, a doctor who specializes in sleep can improve your own – and with it, your energy.

• Control stress. The most common cause of persistent fatigue is stress and the emotional response to it. You can’t eliminate stress from your life, but you can learn relaxation techniques that work as an antidote to it. Deep breathing, meditation, progressive muscle relaxation and visualization can evoke a state of rest and release. These relaxation exercises lower blood pressure and slow heartbeat and respiration.

Paying attention to these lifestyle changes can do a lot more for your energy than drinking “energy drinks,” which are artificial and temporary. You want the real thing.

have a problem with my two younger sisters.

Neither one can have children. I have three.

Recently, one of my sisters turned my sweetest daughter against me by telling her I had “abandoned her” when I moved to Ohio with my oldest son and divorced their father. Not true. I left my daughter with my sister so she could experience raising a teenager since she couldn’t have a child of her own.

After telling my daughter I had abandoned her, my sister advised her to tell me she never wanted to talk to me again. My daughter is very sweet and gullible. She has taken her aunt’s side and says she wants nothing to do with me.

However, South can handle either defense, getting to his hand with the diamond queen (or a club ruff) to draw trumps and run the diamonds for an overtrick.

Note that five diamonds can be defeated. East leads a low spade.

West takes that trick and shifts to a heart to disconnect the North-South hands.
