Kishwaukee College keeping it local

In just three short weeks, the fall semester will be upon us, and Kishwaukee College will once again be bustling with students.

While enrollment is down slightly for fall, we had a strong summer session, which helps the college financially going into the fall term. The Board of Trustees has set three thematic goals for the year, based on the feedback heard at community and business listening sessions.

These include reducing the college’s dependency on state financial aid, building the philanthropic support for the college, and reconfiguring athletics to emphasize recruiting district high school graduates.

From these goals, employees will begin to set their goals for the year at in-service Aug. 24. We need to continue to look at opportunities to meet the needs of our constituents now and in the future. One of the most interesting things we heard from a business leader recently is that Kishwaukee College not only needs to prepare students for current jobs, but help prepare them for the jobs that don’t yet exist.

We need to teach our students to be lifelong learners who are able to learn new skills as technology changes.

This past year, 84 percent of the students attending Kishwaukee College were residents of the college district at the time of application. Some of our unique programs, such as Diesel Power Technology, Horticulture and Truck Driver Training, attract students from outside our district.

We are happy to serve students and businesses on a regional basis, but our primary focus continues to be on our local students and those who pay the property taxes that support Kishwaukee College.

The Board of Trustees is committed to ensuring we continue to focus our efforts

GUEST VIEW Laurie Borowicz on serving local students, and one of the college goals for the year is to change our athletics program to one that primarily recruits local athletes. We want Kishwaukee College to be a place where our talented local high school athletes have an opportunity to continue to play sports in college.

Having more local students on our team rosters will support community engagement and the success of our athletic teams.

In the past three years, 155 area businesses have hired a Kishwaukee College graduate. Meeting the needs of the local business community has long been a goal of the college, and we are working to make this connection even stronger during the coming school year.

By developing a strategic workforce plan, the college will enhance its customized training for businesses, continuing education for working individuals, and additional internship and other work-based learning opportunities for college students.

It is by listening to our stakeholders that we will enhance the sense of community we are striving for at Kishwaukee College.

Illinois race could determine which party holds the U.S. Senate

kcraver@shawmedia.com The race between Republican incumbent U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk and Democratic challenger Tammy Duckworth is an interesting and important one, even against the backdrop of one of the most unusual presidential races in recent memory.

Illinois voters will have a significant say in whether the GOP keeps control of the Senate and, should Hillary Clinton win the White House, the makeup of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Kirk, despite having repeatedly broken with his party and tacked leftward on a number of issues, is considered by many pundits to be the most vulnerable Republican in the Senate this election. The seat he is trying to win for a second six-year team was that of President Barack Obama before Kirk won as part of the 2010 tea party wave that returned the congressional majority to the GOP. What’s more, the race could be a historical first in that both major-party candidates are disabled veterans.

Kirk, who served 22 years in the Navy Reserve as an intelligence officer, is recovering from a debilitating stroke he suffered in 2012. Duckworth, who flew Black Hawk helicopters in the Illinois Army National Guard, lost both her legs and suffered other serious injuries in 2004 when her helicopter was shot down in Iraq by a rocket-propelled grenade. Both retired at the same officer grade – Kirk a commander, and Duckworth a lieutenant colonel.

While Kirk has called his regular departures from the GOP platform a matter of putting principles before party, Duckworth’s campaign has called it an attempt to pretend he’s a Democrat in a blue state that tends to vote even bluer in presidential elections. Twenty-four of the 34 Senate seats up for election this year are held

by Republicans.

But this doesn’t mean that Kirk and Duckworth see eye-to-eye on a lot.

Kirk has steadfastly opposed plans

by Obama to settle refugees in the U.S. from the Syrian civil war until a more thorough way to screen out terrorists hiding among them can be implemented. Duckworth, like many of her fellow Democrats, supports resettling with the current level of scrutiny. While Duckworth signed on to a letter supporting bringing in 100,000 refugees

– 10 times what Obama first suggested – her campaign has steadfastly denied Kirk’s allegations that she wants to bring in 200,000 refugees.

Duckworth supported the Iran nuclear deal, saying that the U.S. could not walk away from the agreement drawn up among its allies and attempt to negotiate alone. Kirk has been among the loudest critics of the Tammy deal, which he alleges Duckworth gives Iran a path toward developing nuclear weapons.

Among Kirk’s breaks with the GOP are his support of giving Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland hearings for the position, and for Democratic gun-control initiatives supported by Duckworth, most recently with expanding background checks and preventing terrorism suspects from

buying firearms in the wake of the Orlando nightclub shooting. He is the only Senate Republican with an “F” rating from the National Rifle Association.

Kirk, who said earlier in the presidential race that he would back whichever Republican candidate emerged as the nominee, changed his mind when that turned out to be Donald Trump. Kirk has publicly distanced himself from Trump and said he had not “demonstrated the temperament” for the presidency in the wake of comments in which Trump said that a Mexican-American judge could not fairly try a lawsuit filed against Trump University. Kirk did not attend the Republican National Convention.

Both Senate candidates enter the race with some past and present political baggage. Duckworth was named in a lawsuit alleging workplace retaliation during her time as the head of

the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs – the case, which had been scheduled for an August trial, was settled in June. While Kirk has repeatedly blasted Trump’s comments, he is himself prone to gaffes and misstatements, such as a statement last year in which he called an unmarried fellow senator a “bro with no ho.” And while Duckworth’s campaign has repeatedly tried to tie Kirk to Trump, she had ties with former governor and now federal inmate Rod Blagojevich, who appointed her to the veterans’ affairs post.

Kirk served five terms representing part of the north shore in the U.S. House before his 2010 election to the Senate. Duckworth was elected to the House in 2012 after defeating one-term Republican firebrand Joe Walsh, whose district, like others, was redrawn after the 2010 census by the Democrat-dominated Illinois General Assembly.

Family, friends raise money for crash survivor

eolson@shawmedia.com Kathleen Brust barely survived the motorcycle crash that killed her fiancé last Saturday outside Sycamore, and now family and friends are raising money to help her family as she begins a long recovery.

Brust, a 29-year-old mother of two, was riding on a motorcycle driven

by Nathan Pasholk, 32. They had attended a friend’s wedding in Michigan the night before, and were just a few miles from their home in Kingston when their bike collided around 5 p.m. with a truck in the 8800 block of Old State Road outside Sycamore, police said.

On Thursday, Brust was scheduled to have surgery on one of her legs at OSF St. Anthony’s Medical Center in Rockford. That’s where she was flown after the crash, having sustained a litany of injuries including broken bones in her legs, knee, pelvis, vertebrae, ribs, skull and jaw, said her younger brother, Jonathon Brust.

Kathleen’s lungs were punctured, her pancreas was bruised, and she suffered internal bleeding in areas including her brain.

“When she got to the hospital, she was airlifted there, and doctors basically said she was in the worst possible condition she could be and still be alive,” Jonathon Brust said.

in the coming days, Jonathon Brust said. Presley is Pasholk’s biological son, Jonathon Brust said. Pasholk also had a son, Harrison, from a previous relationship, he said.

Brust had been the office manager at DeKalb Dental Group the past seven years, and she and Pasholk were planning to be married in March 2017, according to the GoFundMe campaign page.

The campaign had raised more than $9,949 as of Friday evening and should only gather steam.

Brust is expected to be hospitalized at least for six months, her brother said. He said doctors are optimistic she will make a recovery, although she can communicate only by moving her hands and feet, and does not know all that has happened, he said. “[On Wednesday] the nurse asked if she can move her hand, and then she moved her hand, so she’s able to listen and hear and follow commands,” Jonathon Brust said. “…

The biggest concern right now is brain injury and making sure that she’s able to move things, function properly and hear, things like that.

She’s scheduled to have surgery on her leg and jaw.”

Brust has health insurance, but the family is expected to incur many expenses including for child care.

Pasholk’s funeral is scheduled for next week, Jonathon Brust said.

In their news release last Saturday, police said no one had been charged in connection with the crash, which also involved a 17-yearold DeKalb girl. There has been no change since then, police said Thursday.

1 year later: NIU diversity chief to continue dialogues, awareness push

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Northern Illinois University’s first diversity chief has checked a few things off the to-do list that led to her job being created in the first place, but a year into her job, Vernese EdghillWalden said more work remains to be done.

“I feel good about the work that we’ve already done,” said EdghillWalden, NIU’s chief diversity officer, a new cabinet position in the university president’s office. “We can always do better in terms of our reach, who we’re reaching, so we will continue to strive to do that.”

Her position was born out of the same task list she is working from to bring diversity and inclusion aware-

ness and initiatives to the campus – and surrounding community. In 2014, a task force composed of NIU students, faculty and staff recommended establishing the diversity position, among other suggestions.

Edghill-Walden started at NIU on Aug. 1, 2015, and since has moved to DeKalb.

The task force said the school’s outreach to minorities, women, people with disabili- Vernese ties, international stu- Edghilldents and members of Walden the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community had long been splintered. It suggested that more cohesiveness be brought to better incorporate these group into the greater NIU community.

“Dr. Edghill-Walden has brought a great deal of cultural awareness and leadership to both NIU and our community,” said her boss, NIU President Doug Baker. “Building upon NIU’s Diversity and Inclusion Task Force Report recommendations, she has successfully worked to strategically focus and coordinate our broad array of diversity programming, initiate a compelling and engaging dialog series, and develop strong relationships amongst students, faculty, staff and DeKalb.”

It would take only a semester after her arrival for her planned diversity and inclusion events to take off.

Among the activities that emerged this past spring semester, EdghillWalden’s office kicked off the community dialog series in March. The events were free and open to the pub-

lic. In April, her office collaborated with DeKalb School District 428 to offer a six-week diversity and inclusion training session that led to the participating teachers and staff being certified in social justice.

Diversity and inclusion events for the 2016-17 academic year will kick off with a Sept. 14 unity march and community conversation on campus.

Two weeks later, there will be a play co-sponsored with the law school where the audience will act as the jury in a mock case centered on race, religion, class and gender.

Events in October and November round out a semester of community engagement her office will be a part of.

“This is our attempt to continually create resources and space for open dialogue,” Edghill-Walden said.

Irene married Walter Johnson, the love of her life, on January 17, 1953 and shared life together for 39 years, vacationing together in the earlier years of marriage in Wisconsin and Florida, and then settling in to living life in the city until Walter’s death in 1992.

She loved home life and being with family and friends sharing stories more than anything along with reminiscing over old family photos. Irene enjoyed playing UNO with her second family, Ruth, Rosann Chris and CariAnn. Chinese Checkers were a great pastime with her sister Dorothy and husband Ron. Playing the lottery was a must for Irene and she was a lucky winner a few times.

Irene is survived by her sister, Dorothy and husband (Ronald) Razniewski of Sycamore, Illinois; She is also survived by her loving nieces, Dawn (of California), Cheryl, Darlene, Karen; Great Niece, Dominique (of California); and nephews, Tom & Jim, whom she loved and cherished so very much. Her other close extended family (cousins) and many friends too numerous to mention express their love for Irene, the sweetest and most thoughtful little lady around town. Irene will be sorely missed but never forgotten.

Sycamore City Council to consider Developer plans 5-year garbage contract extension to build senior

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The City Council is expected to consider extending its refuse contract with Waste Management for five years under terms of a deal that could make it easier to recycle electronics.

The proposed five-year extension “maintains the same level of service while immediately addressing the need for properly disposing of household chemicals, paints, automotive fluids and electronics for every residence,” according to city documents.

The City Council will meet at 7 p.m.

Monday in the Council Chambers of the Sycamore Center, 308 W. State St., Sycamore.

After complaints from residents about the difficulty of recycling electronics such as TVs and computer monitors, the city sought to ease the burden by modifying its contract with Houston-based Waste Management.

“When approached about the possibility of extending the current agreement, staff insisted that a solution be provided at no additional cost to residents,” according to city documents.

If the contract extension is approved, Waste Management will begin offering its “At Your Door” service in Sycamore starting Oct. 1.

“The ‘At Your Door’ program allows residents to schedule collection of electronics and other eligible materials. The way it works is that the resident calls in or submits a collection request online,” according to city documents. “WM will send a kit that includes a pickup date and a plastic liner for liquid or certain materials that may be deemed hazardous. Once the kit arrives, the resident packages or labels the materials to be disposed of and sets it outside the door or in the designated spot for collection.

WM will send a vehicle on the scheduled day to collect the items being disposed of or recycled.”

Other terms of the contract include increasing the per unit/per month charge by 3 percent to $20.24 in 2017. There would be subsequent 3 percent increases in each of the following years of the contract, according to city documents.

Sycamore Mayor Ken Mundy said the city has been working with Waste Management for many years. He called it a “fair proposal,” but said the decision will be up to the council.

Brian Grainger, owner of Solid Construction Services and Somerset Farm Sycamore LLC, recently brought a concept plan for the 8.59-acre property to the Sycamore Plan Commission. He is seeking permission to build 12 four-unit buildings arranged similar to Somerset Farm off Bethany Road just east of Somonauk Street.

Grainger’s property, directly north of Old Mill Park, is zoned for commercial use. If Grainger’s plan is to go forward, the city would need to rezone the property for residential use.

The neighborhood for residents 55 and older would have units that would be a “slight upgrade” from Somerset Farm, said Steve Nelson, a member of the Sycamore Plan Commission and the Sycamore School District 427 board. All would have basements, Nelson said.

The Plan Commission gave the proposal positive feedback, Nelson said.

“We all agreed that that’s been sitting as commercial for a long time,” Nelson told the school board at a meeting Tuesday.

The completed development would have an estimated equalized assessed value of $13 million, Nelson said. He added that it would be built out over three to four years, with construction starting next summer at the earliest.

Grainger also is eyeing property to north of the proposed development for building something similar if the first project goes well, Nelson said.

Grainger has built more than 400 homes in DeKalb County, according to his company website.

Nationally, active-adult communities are one of the brighter spots for homebuilders, Grainger said. He said Somerset Farm Sycamore, which only has three basement units left for sale, has shown that demand for this type of housing remains strong.

“The demographic is one of the busier segments nationwide,” he said.

“That’s partly due to the sheer number of baby boomers.”

The units in the concept plan will range from about $240,000 to $270,000, depending on options, Grainger said.

The floor plans will be similar to those at Somerset Farm Sycamore, but there will be some additional masonry options, he said. He said the property’s proximity to downtown Sycamore will be a key attraction for buyers.

The Sycamore Plan Commission gave Grainger some constructive feedback about the concept, City Manager Brian Gregory said.

To proceed, Grainger will have to return to the Plan Commission for a zoning change. At that point, the Plan Commission would provide a recommendation to the Sycamore City Council. The City Council would have the final say on approval, Gregory said.

by Mable Glidden in 1936, celebrating its 80th anniversary this year.

The floral shop is one of the earliest woman-owned businesses in the area and boasts a deep history and relationship with the community. Almost three decades before that, Annie Glidden broke ground as one of the leading agricultural innovators in this area.

From noon to 4 p.m. the same day, as part of the Homestead’s 2016 season, “Digging Up the Past,” visitors can tour the Joseph Glidden’s Home where barbed wire was invented, see a working blacksmith shop, and visit the 1870s brick barn being excavated by archaeologists.

Joseph Glidden developed barbed wire in DeKalb in 1873 and went on to patent numerous other inventions. Barbed wire production continued at the Homestead site through the winter of 1873 into the spring of 1874, when the operation moved into town.

SYCAMORE – A DeKalb man faces a number of felony drug charges after police said they found more than 11 ounces of marijuana along with liquid LSD and other drugs in his apartment.

Camden Luther, 24, of the 600 block of Lincoln Highway, was charged with multiple counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver within 1,000 feet of park, possession of a Camden controlled substance and Luther possession of equipment used to make marijuana-based products.

If convicted of the most serious charge, a Class 1 felony, Luther could face four to 15 years in prison.

Officers from the DeKalb Police Department, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department and Northern Illinois University Police Department searched Luther’s apartment Thursday evening after obtaining a warrant. Inside, police said, they found about 1 gram of liquid LSD, seven paper and gummy hits of LSD, 327 grams of marijuana, Xanax pills, Adder-

all pills and half a pill of oxycodone, an opioid pain medication.

In addition, police said they found butane, metal pipes, fittings, glass dishes containing suspected butane hash oil residue, knives, wax paper and marijuana wax, a concentrated form of marijuana.

Police also found a spring-assisted switch blade, cocaine residue and used needles, according to court documents.

Police believe Luther was making marijuana wax based on what they found in the apartment, DeKalb Police Sgt. Steve Lekkas said. The case was the first in which the department has charged a suspect under a provision recently added to the Cannabis Control Act. The law, which also decriminalized possession of small amounts of marijuana, created the offense of unlawful use of cannabis-based product manufacturing equipment.

Luther’s apartment is located 631 feet from Moudy Park, hence the enhanced charges, according to court records.

Over an objection from Assistant State’s Attorney James Walsh, DeKalb County Judge Philip Montgomery set Luther’s bond at $5,000 on Friday. Luther posted $500 bail Friday afternoon and was released.

He is next due in court Aug. 30.

Study finds ongoing education could reduce risk of dementia

Heading back to college can mean more than a new career path, it can also help adults reduce their risk of developing Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia by boosting their brain’s cognitive capacity, according to a study published by the American Psychological Association.

The study, called the Tasmanian Healthy Brain Project, observed participants between 50 and 79 years old who completed at least a year of a full-time or part-time college course. Cognitive tests were taken both before and after finishing the course, and participants were reassessed for three years after.

More than 90 percent of the participants displayed a significant increase in cognitive capacity, compared with 56 percent in a control group who didn’t take any college courses. None of the participants in the study had dementia.

A number of adults who intended only to do a minimum number of units went on to graduate with a full bachelor’s degree and one participant even completed a doctorate. Another common remark from participants was how much they enjoyed the inclass interactions with younger students and that they felt their life experiences were appreciated by younger students,” Lenehan said.

Prior research has shown that college study earlier in life may increase cognitive capacity, and it appears the same may be true for older adults, Lenehan said.

“It is possible that any mentally stimulating activity later in life may also enhance cognitive capacity, such as other adult-education classes or programs to increase social interaction,” she said.

The main challenge to a number of participants in the study was the use of technology, such as online delivery of content and submission of assignments online, Lenehan said.

“Utilizing the resources and support offered by the university as well as asking fellow students to gain assistance in this area seemed to be useful,” she said.

CHICAGO – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin is taking the rare step of weighing in on the state’s handling of a hefty health insurance rate increase request, asking Illinois regulators to press the state’s leading insurer of families and small businesses to reduce costs and be more competitive.

Blue Cross Blue Shield has proposed increases for 2017 ranging from 23 percent to 45 percent for individual health plans sold on the Affordable Care Act insurance exchange. The Illinois Department of Insurance, which has until Aug. 23 to review the proposed rates, can’t reject them outright but can negotiate.

The request prompted Durbin – the Senate’s second-highest ranking Democrat and a vocal supporter of the health care law – to issue a sharply worded statement. It gave a peek into federal involvement in Illinois’ insurance market and put pressure on Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration to show that it’s protecting consumer interests.

Durbin, the state’s senior senator, has been mentioned as a possible candidate for governor in 2018. He has said

Illinois Republican state Sen. Murphy resigns seat

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Republican state Sen. Matt Murphy is resigning his seat to take a job in the private sector.

Murphy is one of GOP’s top lawmakers in the Senate and has been one of the lead voices in budgetary issues as well as one of the governor’s biggest allies.

The Palatine lawmaker said in a letter Friday that his resignation is effective Sept. 15.

Murphy said in the letter the job he is taking “allows me to better meet my family obligations” but did not specify where he is going. He thanked his constituents for “giving me the chance to live out this dream.”

Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner said he was surprised and disappointed by

“The Illinois Department of Insurance is now reviewing the Blues initial big number request for a rate increase,” Durbin said in a statement last week. “I trust that the Illinois Department will hold BCBS to an honest standard which requires reform of their practices reflecting the Dick Durbin new health care marketplace, professional management of their company, and a sensitivity to the costs to be borne by businesses and consumers in our state.”

Department of Insurance spokesman Michael Batkins responded, saying the agency is “working vigorously on behalf of consumers in order to maintain a competitive choice in the marketplace and ensure consumers are protected.”

While many Illinois residents qualify for a tax credit to pay a portion of their premiums, many do not. There are no subsidies for individuals who make more than $47,520 a year or for families of four making at least $97,200

a year.

Mike Moyer, a 45-year-old entrepreneur in Lake Forest, Illinois, pays $1,397 each month for Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance to cover himself, his wife and their three children. Meeting the $6,000 deductible is pushing his total health care costs this year well over $20,000.

With a household income that’s too high for a federal tax credit, an increase in premiums next year would mean he would save even less for emergencies and retirement, Moyer said. But he’s grateful for the coverage because old health problems flared up this year.

“It’s been confusing, frustrating and expensive, but this year it’s been totally worth it,” he said. “Blue Cross has been very helpful.”

Other Illinois insurers are proposing double-digit rate increases. But Durbin is focusing on Blue Cross, urging state regulators to hold the company accountable.

Durbin said he met in April with the “highest ranking officials” from Health Care Service Corporation, which runs Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois. They “told me they were losing money and considering pulling out of Illinois,” Durbin said.

Blue Cross spokeswoman Kristen Cunningham confirmed the meeting, but declined to answer whether the company was considering leaving the state’s marketplace.

“During the meeting, we shared that we are working hard toward continuing to provide health insurance options for consumers,” Cunningham said in an email to The Associated Press. “We will continue to work with state and federal regulators and health policy makers to help ensure a stable and sustainable insurance marketplace for Illinois.”

Durbin said that after the meeting, he asked U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell “to look into Illinois personally, and she sent a team to Chicago to try and understand why there was a greater problem in Illinois than in other major states served by the Blues.”

The Department of Health and Human Services made recommendations “that Illinois BCBS could be more competitive, reduce costs, and still maintain quality care in our state and the other states they serve,” Durbin said.

Cunningham declined to comment on the federal recommendations mentioned in Durbin’s statement.

QUINCY – State officials have confirmed a third new case of Legionnaires’ disease at a western Illinois veterans’ home since an outbreak there last year killed 12 people and sickened 54.

The directors of the Illinois departments of veterans’ affairs and public health said in a statement Thursday that three residents have tested positive for the disease at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy, including two who state officials announced were sickened last month.

Of two dozen veterans who have been tested since the reports of new cases in July, 21 have come back negative, Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Nirav D. Shah and Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs Director Erica Jeffries said. The Quincy facility houses about 400 residents.

Wisconsin man charged in stabbings of 4 people, dog

BUFFALO GROVE – Authorities said a Wisconsin man was charged in connection with the stabbings of four people and a dog during a break-in at a suburban Chicago home.

Buffalo Grove police said Friday morning that 29-year-old Jacob William Beeman of Arkdale, Wisconsin, was charged with attempted first-degree murder, home invasion and aggravated animal cruelty. He was scheduled to appear in court Friday in Rolling Meadows.

The department said Beeman also is wanted in Wisconsin for charges related to resisting a peace officer. Police said more charges are likely.

Police said Beeman believed there were large sums of cash and drugs in the home.

Chicago restoring bronze George Washington statue

CHICAGO – The city of Chicago is restoring a 112-year-old bronze statue of George Washington that sits near Martin Luther King Drive.

The city said Thursday that the sculpture will be removed, laser-cleaned, examined for corrosion and restored.

It will then be set on a reconstructed pedestal about 25 feet from its current location near the northwest corner of Washington Park. The project is expected to be finished later this year.

The statue depicts Washington astride a horse with his sword pointed to the sky. It is a replica of a statue unveiled in Paris in 1900. It was created by renowned American sculptors Daniel Chester French and Edward Clark Potter.

French is known for the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, and Potter designed the lions outside the New York Public Library.

ERIE, Pa. – It’s the media’s fault. That’s out of context. Never said it in the first place.

Donald Trump’s claim Friday that he was merely being “sarcastic” in accusing President Barack Obama of establishing a terrorist group was his latest attempt to blame others for the uproar over what he says. It’s an instinct that Trump’s opponents say a president can’t possess. Some Republicans seem to have the same concern.

This time, it followed two days of critical headlines and Democratic outrage over Trump’s claim that Obama was the “founder” of the Islamic State group. As Trump repeated the claim more than a dozen times, interviewers sought to ensure Trump wasn’t being misconstrued. Surely, they offered, he meant Obama’s policies had enabled the extremist group’s rise.

“No, I meant he’s the founder of ISIS. I do,” Trump said, using one acronym for the group.

Then an about-face Friday. “THEY DON’T GET SARCASM?” he tweeted.

Or was he being sarcastic about the sarcasm? Hours later, he told a rally in Pennsylvania he was “obviously being sarcastic – but not that sarcastic, to be honest with you.”

That it took Trump two days to walk back his widely debunked remark – and then walk back the walk-back – was worrying for Republicans who see such missteps as playing to Democrat Hillary Clinton’s advantage.

Equally worrying for some was the fact that he again would not take responsibility for his words.

Minutes after releasing her returns, Clinton tweeted that it’s possible Trump paid no tax at all.

Trump worked to profit on the fuss over his Islamic State remark. In an email to supporters asking them to donate, Trump accused the “liberal media” of telling “outrageous lies about me.”

It’s no surprise that the media are Trump’s go-to scapegoat. Just 6 percent of Americans said they have a great deal of confidence in the media in a Media Insight Project poll earlier this year.

Almost never does Trump admit error. One exception came this month when he acknowledged a video he said showed a plane carrying U.S. cash to Iran was actually a plane carrying U.S. hostages who were being released.

TOPEKA, Kan. – The huge Kansas City, Kansas, waterslide on which a 10-year-old boy died was built in a state known for its light regulation of amusement park rides, and the company lobbied legislators to help ensure that it remained responsible for its own inspections.

Kansas mandates annual inspections of permanent amusement park rides but allows private inspectors to do the checks, rather than requiring a state inspection. The state does only random audits of operators’ records, and there are no additional local safety regulations for the Schlitterbahn Waterpark in Kansas City.

Before Kansas considered imposing inspection requirements for amusement rides in 2008, a Schlitterbahn lobbyist urged state lawmakers to allow large parks to handle their own inspections.

The resulting Kansas law and regulations contain provisions that the author of an older and tougher Florida

law called “absurd.”

States’ regulations of waterslides and other amusement rides are facing scrutiny following the death Sunday of Caleb Thomas Schwab on the 168foot “Verruckt” at the Schlitterbahn park. He was the son of state Rep. Scott Schwab, an Olathe Republican.

“I would assume and hope that the Legislature would spend significant time in looking at the issue, and we will, as an administration,” Republican Gov. Sam Brownback told reporters Friday. “I think that all needs to be looked at now in light of this tragedy.”

Authorities have not said exactly how the accident occurred. Schlitterbahn has said Verruckt – German for “insane” – will remain closed for the rest of the season.

Permanent rides in Kansas must be “self-inspected” annually by a qualified inspector, with the state conducting random audits of the resulting inspection records.

A document released this week by the state Department of Labor showed all of Schlitterbahn’s rides passed private inspections June 7.

WASHINGTON – A government report finds that the cost of expanding Medicaid to millions more low-income people is increasing faster than expected, raising questions about a vital part of President Barack Obama’s health care law.

The law provided for the federal government to pay the entire cost of the Medicaid expansion from 2014 through the end of this year.

Obama has proposed an extra incentive for states that have not yet expanded Medicaid: three years of full federal financing no matter when they start.

But the new cost estimates could complicate things.

In a recent report to Congress, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said the cost of expansion was $6,366 per person for 2015, about 49 percent higher than previously estimated.

The new estimates could be a warning light for Democrat Hillary Clinton, who has promised that, if elected president, she would work to expand Medicaid in the remaining 19 states that have not done so. Higher costs would make it harder for a President Clinton to sell Obama’s full-financing plan to Congress.

Under the law, people making up to 138 percent of the federal poverty line – about $16,390 for an individual and $33,530 for a family of four – are eligible for Medicaid at little or no cost to them.

An estimated 9 million to 10 million people are covered by the Medicaid expansion, and many of the remaining uninsured are likely to be eligible if their states accept. Most of the new Medicaid recipients are low-income adults.

Thumbs-up to the Americans dominating at the Olympics in Rio Thumbs-up: To Americans dominating at the Olympics in Rio. This week, Michael Phelps added to his record medal total, seemingly untouchable in every swimming final. Simone Biles showed the world why her peers say she is the greatest active gymnast in the world – and maybe the best of all time. Collectively, Team USA has won more medals, including more gold medals, than any other country. Our country’s athletes have put on a wonderful, entertaining show so far.

Thumbs-down: To another missed grant opportunity for the Voluntary Action Center. Although VAC is clearly in need of a new building – and local government has been ready to contribute land and cash to the effort – the federal government can’t be convinced to go along. U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, who represents the area in Washington, D.C., visited the VAC transportation hub Thursday – but we can’t help thinking it might have been more helpful if he’d visited and advocated for the project when it still had a chance at being funded in Washington.

Thumbs-up: To the return of football. Local prep football players hit practice fields Monday at schools around the area, Northern Illinois football held its first practices of the season this week, and the Bears held their first preseason contest of the year Thursday against the Denver Broncos at Soldier Field. Sports fans no doubt are ready for the return of local football on Friday nights, where DeKalb is the defending Northern Illinois Big 12 East Division champion; on Saturdays, where NIU is the six-time defending Mid-American Conference West Division champion; and on Sundays … when the Bears (and Green Bay Packers) play.

Thumbs-down: To bad behavior at the Olympics. There have been some cases of fans booing, which is rare to hear at the Olympic Games. More disturbing was the scene after a Friday men’s judo match, in which Egypt’s Islam El Shehaby refused to bow to or shake hands with Israel’s Or Sasson. The murders of 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 games are not so long ago that we have forgotten, and there is no place for this kind of behavior in what is supposed to be an apolitical exhibition of sportsmanship.

Thumbs-up: To those working to help provide school supplies for local children in need. Several community groups have come together to help provide new clothes and school supplies, and the DeKalb County Health Department helped this week to provide low-cost physicals for local children. We’re pleased that those families that can’t afford to provide their children all they would like have some help at this time of back-to-school shopping.

Thumbs-down: To escalating labor unrest at DeKalb School District 428. This week, the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board posted the final offers from both the district and its teachers union, showing a gulf between the two. Union officials said they planned to file an intent-tostrike notice Friday, a necessary step toward a walkout but not a guarantee one will take place. More negotiations are scheduled for next week, and we hope the two sides can find common ground that won’t saddle taxpayers with an undue property tax burden.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Time between bells only part of teacher’s day

and parents who are depending on them to be the best teacher they can be and give the best education they can give with the resources they have. The teachers are in the schools long before the school year starts (unpaid days) to prepare for their students. There is no other way to do it. It is not a frivolous “choice.” It has to happen.

They are bringing in boxes and bins of supplemental materials they have purchased with their own money. Yes, I guess you could say that is a choice as well. But if they don’t make that choice, their students will not have the environment and experiences that are optimum.

I encourage members of the public who actually believe that teachers only work bell-to-bell to spend even half a day with an elementary school teacher. I encourage you, Mr. [Eric] Olson, to spend at least half a day with an elementary school teacher.

Teachers make that “choice,” as you say, because they know that is what it takes to be an excellent teacher for their students. The public would not want it any other way.

To the Editor, I am writing concerning your editorial suggesting that teachers have a choice whether to work a longer school day than the bell-to-bell school day.

There is no choice but to work longer – much longer. A teacher does not prepare lesson plans, grade papers, collaborate with other staff, communicate with parents, prepare learning stations, manage IEP caseloads, and many other day-to-day tasks on a bell-to-bell schedule. It just doesn’t happen that way.

To say that is the choice of the teacher is nonsense. Those essential tasks occur way before and after that bell rings. An elementary teacher has from 20 to 26 students in their class, and many of them do not speak English. The preparation to teach those students does not happen when the first bell rings.

I am a retired elementary teacher from the DeKalb district, and I have lived next door to an elementary school for 45 years. Teachers are rolling into the parking lot as early as 7 a.m., and it Carol Naylor is not by choice. It is because they have children DeKalb

Corruption not half as bad as what’s legal I don’t want Hillary Clinton to be president. She’s a liar.

But I can’t vote for Donald Trump.

He lies almost as often.

Trump denies he ever said things, claiming he never used terms like “fat pig” to describe women, that he never was open to using nuclear weapons against ISIS, that he never mocked Jon Stewart for changing his name.

Smears big and small – Trump just denies he said them.

He’s also a bully. He intimidates weaker people by suing them. In business deals, he refuses to pay some of what he owes and then tells creditors: Go ahead and sue me! Creditors often take partial payment because they can’t afford to fight Trump in court.

Trump even filed a $5 million lawsuit against a Miss USA contestant who criticized his pageant. She can’t afford to pay defense lawyers, so she has to shut up.

Trump’s supporters are convinced he’ll shake up the system, but they ignore the evidence that Trump is just one more manipulative member of the rich political class. Plenty of photos show Trump proudly golfing alongside George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and other political insiders whom he now mocks.

But all that matters less than the

VIEWS John Stossel policies he proposes – it’s the policies that will hurt us.

Trump’s tariffs, sold as protecting the American little guy, actually help big businesses by protecting them from overseas competition. Then they can jack up prices, making life harder for poor American customers.

The Obama administration tried tariffs on tires from China such as the 45 percent ones Trump wants to impose, and the results were higher prices – Americans had to spend about $1 billion more to buy tires. Favored (usually unionized) businesses got protection from competition, but other businesses died or never started because imported supplies were suddenly much more expensive.

Of course, we don’t really know what Trump’s positions are. He’s for gun control, then against it. He was against the minimum wage but now wants to raise it.

Hillary Clinton flip-flops, too. She was for trade pacts, but she’s now against them; against gay marriage,

now for it; for the Iraq war, now against it.

Clinton lies even more than Trump.

She lies about her emails, running from sniper fire, making $100,000 from a $1,000 investment in cattle futures, etc.

This column doesn’t have room for all her lies.

But with Clinton, too, it’s not the lies that will do the most damage, it’s the policies she’ll push – higher taxes, involvement in more foreign wars, endless regulation that will stop innovation.

Most of the time, the danger isn’t politicians’ personal corruption. The real cost to our prosperity and freedom comes from what the politicians do legally.

Although President Barack Obama is a paragon of honesty compared with Trump and Clinton, he has done sleazy things, such as secretly sending $400 million in cash to Iran and lying to people about details of Obamacare.

But even when he tells us the truth, Obama does plenty of damage.

His Federal Communications Commission has imposed new rules that will stifle internet innovation. His overtime rules will limit employer flexibility and stunt job growth.

Obama’s “stimulus” spending

diverted trillions of dollars from better investments the marketplace would have chosen. His limits on internships hurt business and deprive young people of opportunities. His doubling of our deficit will burden us forever.

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton may be more corrupt than Obama, but it’s not the corruption that hurts us most. It’s the political culture of buying votes by spending taxpayers’ money on special interests. That culture grows when government spends $4 trillion every year and makes so many rules that any almost regulator can crush a disfavored industry or help a favored one.

As the old joke goes, it’s not the corruption that matters. “The real crime is what’s legal.” How do we improve a system like that?

Here’s one solution: Shrink government – limit its power. Then there will be less reason for politicians’ cronies to bribe them, for politicians to lie about it and for all of us to fear the state.

The smaller government is, the less we need to fear the bad things it will do.

Chinese show trials cast U.S. as enemy

Chinese authorities turned last week’s show trials of four legal activists into a multimedia sensation, with forced confessions airing nightly on prime-time news and propaganda videos online.

Beyond vilifying the four men, who advocated for dissidents and religious minorities, the trials had a broader purpose: to paint the United States as China’s enemy.

The courtroom drama was highly choreographed, with four trials over four days, each lasting a few hours.

The accused, who couldn’t use their own lawyers or have family in the courtroom, were arrested during last year’s sweep of nearly 300 lawyers and legal activists. When they surfaced in a courtroom in the port city of Tianjin after more than a year incommunicado, they denounced themselves, praised their jailers and condemned overseas influences for leading them astray.

“We must see clearly the ugly faces of those hostile foreign forces, and those within the country with ulterior motives,” declared defendant Zhai Yanmin.

Zhai was affiliated with the Fengrui law firm, which represented artist Ai Weiwei, members of the Falun Gong

religious sect and parents of children poisoned by tainted baby formula.

“Don’t be hoodwinked by the rhetoric they parade about ‘democracy,’ ‘human rights’ and the ‘public good,’ ” Zhai warned the public, echoing official talking points. He was convicted of subversion and given a suspended threeyear sentence.

“I never grasped that Western ‘peaceful evolution’ of China was so serious,” said fellow defendant Zhou Shifeng, founder of the Fengrui law firm. “Xi Jinping’s rule of law has made China ever stronger.” His sentence is seven years.

Hu Shigen, a longtime democracy and religious-freedom advocate sentenced to 7½ years, confessed to being “influenced by bourgeois liberalism” and working with “foreign anti-China forces” for sending fellow defendant Gou Hongguo to an interfaith conference in Taiwan.

The conference was hosted by Initiatives for China, a U.S.-based group that promotes “a peaceful transition to democratic governance in China” and is supported by the U.S. National Endowment for Democracy. The NED is an increasingly frequent target of

Chinese condemnation. When authorities detained a Beijing-based Swedish legal activist for 23 days early this year, his interrogators cited internal NED documents.

For decades Beijing handled dissident trials delicately, with few if any cameras in the courtroom and brief mentions in official media. Today state agencies compete to amplify saturation news coverage.

The Central Committee of the Communist Youth League last week posted a video on social media accusing U.S. and other diplomats of orchestrating protests by defendants’ wives outside the Tianjin courthouse. “Truly, these were well-trained performers,” the video says as two wives are seen screaming and crying. It also slams former U.S. Ambassador Jon Huntsman for political meddling, citing his walk past a protest in Beijing in 2011.

The office of China’s chief prosecutor also circulated a video accusing the U.S. of trying to turn China into another Syria by fomenting unrest in Hong Kong, Tibet and Xinjiang. “The central government under the leadership of the party is crystal clear about the dangers of ‘color revolution,’ ” it said. “We are

extremely confident that China will not become the next Soviet Union.”

Anti-Western agitation is on the rise within the Communist Party. In 2013, a secret Party directive known as “Document No. 9” exhorted cadres to battle “false ideological trends” including “Western constitutional democracy”; the belief that “freedom, democracy and human rights are universal and eternal” values; “the West’s idea of journalism”; and “rejecting the accepted conclusions” on events such as the 1989 Tiananmen massacre. Targets to combat included “Western embassies, consulates, media operations and nongovernmental organizations.”

China’s Communists no longer may be Marxists, but under Xi Jinping they take their Leninism seriously. This is a tragedy for the victims of state abuse, growing numbers of whom languish in prison for speaking up – as do lawyers who dare to defend them. It’s also dangerous. As in Russia and Iran today, official propaganda that paints America as a villain can incite nationalist passions that erupt in unpredictable ways – and not always peacefully in the rest of the world.

Despite having his playing days in the past, the former dual-threat quarterback used both Thursday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Scheduled to throw out the ceremonial first pitch for the Kane County Cougars, Harnish was stuck in the passenger seat during pregame traffic and simply got out and ran to the field in time to deliver a strike to a cheering crowd at NIU Night.

“I was incredibly nervous,” Harnish said. “I hadn’t thrown a baseball in years, so I was incredibly nervous walking out there, but it seemed like it went OK. ... I was literally sweating, and I’m not a sweater by nature. I’m out there and I couldn’t even breathe, barely.”

Harnish said he was planning on going with a group of friends to NIU Night and laughed that a couple of friends suggested his name a few weeks ago to the Cougars staff to throw out the first pitch.

There were plenty of fans and well-wishers for Harnish on hand, some congratulating him on a perfect throw as he walked back up the stands. NIU alum Pam Kluber sat in the front row on the first-base side and smiled as she talked about seeing Harnish play quarterback for the Huskies from 2008 through 2011.

“I just remember him being awesome,” said Kluber, who graduated in 1981. “He’s very approachable. When there’s an approachable athlete, it’s nice. Some of them get on their high horse and forget where they came from, but not him.”

It’s the second or third time Harnish has thrown out a first pitch, he said – however, his hometown Fort Wayne TinCaps had him throw a football instead.

“It’s more my element, so I’m not as nervous,” he said with a laugh. “I think tonight might have been the first baseball throw.”

Harnish, 28, now is adjusting to life after football. He’s living with former NIU teammate and ex-Atlanta Falcons linebacker Pat Schiller and is working in business and sales with Pinkston-Tadd, Inc., an industrial roofing company in DeKalb. However, although his playing days are done,

he still keeps his foot in the water by coaching.

“I train quarterbacks on the side, it’s sort of a hobby for me. It allows me to stay close to the game and another excuse for a workout,” Harnish said.

However, asked if he would be interested in coaching in college – perhaps NIU – he laughed.

“I don’t think coaching for a profession is in the cards for me. I think coaching at the younger levels – whether it’s youth football or at high

school – I think my platform, I think the Lord gave me the chance to affect younger people through sports and athletics and just making the world a better place. ... That’s kind of the plan right now.”

However, he put his fingerprints on DeKalb with his play as the star quarterback for the Huskies when they began their stretch of six consecutive Mid-American Conference West championships. He still is the all-time leader in passing yards (8,944 yards) and passing touchdowns (68) – to go along with 2,983 rushing yards and 24 rushing touchdowns.

He led the Huskies to a combined record of 22-6 in his final two seasons, earning the Vern Smith Leadership Award for the best player in the MAC his senior season.

After being selected with the last pick of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts, he spent three years with the team before being released.

“Then you started to realize the business side,” he said. “I had the dream come true for a few years, then you realize it’s a business.”

He still bounced around for a few teams – he joined the Minnesota Vikings midseason in 2014, even living with former teammate Trevor Olson, who was coaching at the University of Minnesota, but Harnish got hurt, signed with the Cardinals and eventually was released.

By then, he said he knew it was time to fall back on Plan B – using his business degree and returning to DeKalb.

“By that point, moving around and living out of a suitcase got real old,” he said. “That’s when I had the realization and it came to an end when they released me in the preseason, and that’s all she wrote. I have no regrets.”

DETROIT – For six straight seasons, Northern Illinois has played in the Mid-American Conference Championship game. The Huskies haven’t always won, but they always have made it there, no matter how strong a challenge they’ve faced from others in their division.

This year it’s Western Michigan that looks ready to provide the sternest test. The Broncos were overwhelming favorites to win the conference in the preseason media poll, but WMU coach and Kaneland alumnus P.J. Fleck was quick to steer attention back toward NIU, his alma mater.

“We have a team in the West that’s won six straight championships and they don’t get picked. You got to be kidding me. They’ve won six straight,” Fleck said. “I don’t understand that.”

Western Michigan went 8-5 last season and returns quarterback Zach Terrell and receiver Corey Davis. WMU lost only two conference games in 2015 – against NIU and Bowling Green, the two teams who played for the MAC title.

NIU has won the conference three

times during its streak of six title-game appearances. Bowling Green beat the Huskies for the championship last season and in 2013. In fact, Bowling Green is working on its own streak of three trips to the title game in Detroit.

Western Michigan hasn’t played in the MAC Championship game since 2000, and hasn’t won the conference since 1988. Fleck has been WMU’s coach for three seasons, and P.J. Fleck the Broncos improved quickly after going 1-11 in 2013.

Phelps beaten by 21-year-old Ledecky handily breaks 800 free world record

RIO DE JANEIRO – A stunner at the Rio Olympics: Michael Phelps was beaten.

Rather handily at that.

The most decorated athlete in Olympic history couldn’t pull off one of his patented comebacks in the 100-meter butterfly, easily held off by a swimmer a decade younger.

Twenty-one-year-old Joseph Schooling of Singapore got off to a blistering start, building a lead that not even Phelps could overcome.

After winning four gold medals at these games and looking unbeatable, Phelps finally ran out of steam in what was the final individual race of his career, unless he decides to come out of retirement again.

The 31-year-old Phelps still has a chance to leave Rio with 23 golds in his career. But he’ll have to do it with some help from his teammates, swimming

in the butterfly leg of the 400 medley relay on the final night of swimming Saturday.

Phelps wound up in a three-way tie for silver along with two longtime rivals, Chad le Clos of South Africa and Laszlo Cseh of Hungary. They all touched in 51.14 – a half-body length behind Schooling’s winning time of 50.39.

“A three-way tie is pretty wild,”

Phelps said. “Joe is tough. Hats off to him, he swam a great race. It’s kind of special and a decent way to finish my last individual race.”

Phelps quickly swam over to congratulate Schooling, who seemed stunned by what he had done.

“It hasn’t really sunk in yet,” Schooling said. “I’m sorry if I don’t seem like I’m full of emotions right now. I don’t know what to believe, like, whether I actually did it or I’m still preparing for my race.”

Phelps, he added, is “a guy that will go down in our history books as the greatest of all time of any sport. I’m just honored and glad to have that moment and that privilege to race alongside Michael and Chad and all those guys.”

Although Phelps’ loss left the crowd in shock, Katie Ledecky got them on their feet again with another dominating performance, handily breaking the world record in the 800 freestyle.

And two other Americans won gold, too. Anthony Ervin capped a remarkable personal journey with a gold in the 50 freestyle – 16 years after he won his first individual gold in the same event at the Sydney Games. And Maya DiRado knocked off the Iron Lady in the 200 backstroke, pulling off a furious rally on the final lap to beat Katinka Hosszu. Bronze went to Canada’s Hilary Caldwell.

RIO DE JANEIRO – Ethiopia’s Almaz Ayana opened the Olympic track meet Friday by winning the 10,000 meters in 29 minutes, 17.45 seconds to shatter a 23-year-old world record by more than 14 seconds.

“This was not my plan,” Ayana said.

How impressive was this race?

The 24-year-old Ayana, who had limited experience running 10Ks on tracks and is really considered a 5K specialist, won by more than 15 seconds. She was halfway through her victory lap while the largest pack in the field of 37 women was making its way across the finish line.

After a scoreless first half, Stina Blackstenius scored in the 61st minute to give Sweden a 1-0 lead. Alex Morgan netted the equalizer in the 78th, and the match went to extra time.

Lloyd then had a header called back for offside in the 115th minute, and Lotta Schelin was offside on her attempt

against Solo a minute later – although replays appeared to show otherwise.

The reigning World Cup champions, who are also four-time Olympic champions, had not dropped a match this year.

“Really just heartbroken right now for the girls and the federation. It’s unfortunate,” said Morgan, who missed the first penalty in the shootout. “I feel like we were prepared, but so were Sweden. I felt today could go either way.”

The Americans won their first two matches in Brazil before a surprising 2-2 draw in Manaus against Colombia, which already had been eliminated.

Sweden had won only five prior matches against the United States. At last year’s World Cup, the two teams played to a scoreless draw. The last time the two teams met in the Olympics was at the 1996 Atlanta Games. Sundhage was a player on the Sweden team that fell 2-1 to the Americans.

Ranked sixth in the world, Sweden had struggled in its Olympic group with a 5-1 loss to host Brazil and finished 1-1-1.

The crowd at Mane Garrincha Stadium was sparse but continued to jeer Solo every time she touched the ball.

The local fans still are upset about her posts on social media about the Zika virus. Solo posted a picture of herself in mosquito netting and armed with insect repellent.

RIO DE JANEIRO – Kyrie Irving scored 15 points and the U.S. men’s basketball team survived its second straight strong challenge in the Rio Games, edging Serbia, 94-91, Friday.

The Americans won their 48th consecutive international tournament game, but it was anything but easy.

Serbia’s Bogdan Bogdanovic missed a 3-pointer from the left wing with 2 seconds left that would have tied it, and Kevin Durant grabbed the rebound to keep the Americans unbeaten. They barely escaped against Australia on Wednesday.

DeAndre Jordan scored 13 and Carmelo Anthony 12 for the U.S., which will close pool play Sunday against France.

Nikola Jokic scored 25 for Serbia.

Stenson in hunt for golf gold

RIO DE JANEIRO – British Open champion Henrik Stenson is close enough to think about adding an Olympic gold medal to his silver claret jug.

It just required a long and wild route to get into contention Friday.

Marcus Fraser of Australia got off to a quick start, stretched his lead to four shots at one point and wound up with a 2-under-par 69 for the 36-hole lead in the first Olympic golf competition since 1904. At 10-under 132, he had a one-shot lead over Thomas Pieters of Belgium, a former NCAA champion at Illinois who closed with three straight birdies for a 66.

Stenson shot a 68 to go into the weekend at Olympic Golf Course two shots behind and in the final group.

BRASILIA, Brazil – Taunted by local fans since the Olympics began and stinging from a surprising loss, Hope Solo called Sweden a “bunch of cowards.”

The U.S. goalkeeper criticized the Swedes for the way they played Friday in beating the Americans in a penalty shootout – a result that means the world’s top-ranked team will miss out on a medal in women’s socPia Sundhage cer for the first time.

“I thought we played a courageous game,” Solo said.

“I also think we played a bunch of cowards. The best team did not win today. I strongly and firmly believe that.”

The Swedes beat the U.S., 4-3, on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the quarterfinals. They will next face either Australia or host Brazil.

“It’s OK to be a coward if you win,” responded Sweden coach Pia Sundhage, the same woman who coached the United States to back-to-back Olympic gold medals in 2008 and 2012.

A few hours after the match, Solo posted on Twitter and seemed to feel some remorse, but she stopped short of apologizing.

“Losing sucks,” Solo tweeted. “I’m really bad at it.”

Tied after three rounds in the shootout, Sweden captain Caroline Seger shot past Solo. U.S. forward Christen Press’ attempt then went over Hedvig Lindahl’s net. And with the next kick, Lisa Dahlkvist beat an outstretched Solo for the win.

“Sweden dropped off. They didn’t want to open play,” Solo said, explaining why she criticized her opponents.

“They didn’t want to pass the ball. They didn’t want to play great soccer.”

Sundhage knows the U.S. team well, having coached the Americans for five years and led them to a pair of Olympic golds.

“I was itching and ready to go,” he said.

Floyd lined up as if he was going to rush from the inside on a third-and-4 play, and the Broncos false started. They threw a touchLeonard Floyd down on the next play, but Floyd got his run in the first quarter, finishing with two tackles coming in pursuit of the ballcarrier.

“I made a couple plays back-side, that probably was my highlight of the day,” Floyd said. “Tried to get my rush going. Me and coach, we were talking throughout the whole game on different types of rushes I could use, and we’re going to go and look at the film and see how I can do the rush as well.”

Floyd wasn’t surprised by the speed

The No. 9 overall pick was pleased with his hand placement in the pass rush, but said he needs to be faster.

Floyd and the coaches can use his reps Thursday night to figure out what’s next as he gets ready for the regular season.

For Thursday night, Floyd can be pleased that his athleticism showed up against the run, even if he didn’t get to the quarterback.

“I always want to showcase my speed and make plays,” he said. “It comes from effort and wanting to get the ball.”

MIAMI – Carlos Rodon pitched six innings to record his first victory since May as the White Sox beat the Miami Marlins, 4-2, Friday night.

Adam Eaton tied a career-high with four hits for the Sox, who had four players drive in a run in their first game in Miami since 2004.

Rodon (3-8) had been winless in his previous nine starts after a May 22 win against Kansas City. Rodon, who spent his early childhood in Miami, allowed one run and three hits while striking out four and walking three in a 122-pitch outing.

CHICAGO – For each of the six times he boomeranged between the Cubs and the minor leagues last season, Matt Szczur considered each trip a double-edged sword.

He desperately wanted to be part a push for a National League pennant.

But Szczur also understood each trip back down offered him playing time and the opportunity to improve.

Although he’s not yet an everyday player, Szczur has become a pro’s pro at rising to the occasion. So when manager Joe Maddon inserted Szczur into the leadoff slot designated to fuel the rest of the Cubs’ offense, Szczur answered the call Friday.

And then some. “(I thought) give this guy the opportunity and he’s going to do whatever he possibly can to take advantage of it,” Maddon said. “He pretty much stirred it up for the entire group today.”

Szczur responded with the first career multihome run game of his career as the Cubs slugged five homers to back Jake Arrieta and won their 11th straight game by drubbing the Cardinals, 13-2, at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs improved to 32 games over .500 and extended their lead in the NL Central over the Cardinals to 14 games.

They widened their lead with starters Dexter Fowler, Jason Heyward and Ben Zobrist all on the bench. Szczur and his fellow fill-ins never missed a beat.

“Twenty-five guys are here and 25 guys are going to produce every day no matter what position you’re in,” said Szczur, who went 3 for 4 with the two home runs and a double. “Joe mixes and matches, and today he pretty much gave all the starters a day off, and we were still able to put up 13 runs.”

Friday’s positional mash-up resulted in each of the Cubs’ outfielders contributing to the home run parade.

Rookie Willson Contreras, who started in left field, gave the Cubs a 5-0 lead in the second inning with a three-run blast that helped chase Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright after only two innings.

The lower the number, the higher the chances of leg pain while exercising or of limb-threatening low blood flow.

The ABI also offers information about your general cardiovascular health.

An ABI result under 0.90, for example, also indicates an increased risk of heart attack, stroke or dying of heart disease. That’s because people with severe atherosclerosis of the arteries of the leg usually also have atherosclerosis of the arteries of the heart and brain.

A recent study estimated about 20 percent of adults older than 55 have blockages in the leg arteries, although not all of them have symptoms yet.

Not surprisingly, the problem is even more common in people who have risk factors for atherosclerosis. That includes smoking, untreated high cholesterol, untreated high blood pressure, diabetes, or people in your family with a history of heart attacks, strokes or blockages in the arteries of their legs.

Dear Dr. K: My right calf starts aching when I exercise. My doctor said she wants to do a test that is like taking my blood pressure in my leg instead of my arm. Does that make any sense?

Dear Reader: I can understand why that seems confusing, but your doctor is right. She probably is worried the arteries to your right leg have blockages from plaques of atherosclerosis. When you exercise, your leg muscles need more blood; it provides the nutrition they need to work. When blockages prevent your leg muscles from getting the blood they need, they scream in pain.

The leg pain caused by atherosclerosis usually is felt in the calf, though sometimes it is felt in the thigh. Typically, the pain starts only after a person has been exercising his or her legs for a while.

When a person stops exercising, pain caused by atherosclerosis typically goes away over the next minute or two.

Of course, many different conditions can cause leg pain when we exercise. In particular, injuries to leg muscles or to the hip, knee, ankle or foot can cause exercise pain. Just from your symptoms alone, it is hard to be sure what is causing leg pain when you exercise.

A key test for problems in peripheral arteries is the ankle-brachial index, or ABI. An ABI compares blood pressure readings from the ankle and the brachial artery, which is the major blood vessel in the upper arm. The test is done using a blood pressure cuff and an ultrasound probe.

Normally, blood pressure is similar whether it is measured in the legs or in the arms. If blood pressure is lower in the legs, it usually means fatty buildup inside the leg arteries is interfering

Dear Abby: I am DEAR ABBY recently engaged, and both my Jeanne fiancé and his Phillips mother keep trying to set up “play dates” between his mom, my mom and me.

I understand this may be a social norm so the mothers of an engaged couple can get to know each other during the engagement. However, my mom wants nothing to do with these dates.

Mom works long hours in the medical field. When she isn’t working, she’s frequently baby-sitting my sister’s children. When she has free time, she enjoys being alone and reading a good book. This is her ideal way to spend her time, and she doesn’t want to “hang out” with anyone but my dad. I have explained this more than once to my fiancé, yet he and his mom still try to set up meetings.

In defense of my mom, she and my fiancé’s mother have known each other longer than my fiancé and I have known each other. They live about a mile apart and have met many, many times. I don’t understand why more meetups are necessary.

It’s getting to the point where I wish they’d stop asking my mom to do things. Must I drag Mom somewhere I know she’d rather not be, or should my fiance let this go? – Too Much Togeth-

What would South hold in each case? Well, if the jack is a singleton, South started with king-queen-fifth of spades. Surely with that he would have opened one spade, not one heart. (South is mega unlikely to be 5-6 in the majors, especially as he did not try for a slam.) So, East should assume his partner has led from a doubleton. Since East has no outside entry card, he should signal encouragement with his spade nine. West will get in with the heart king, lead his second spade, and receive a spade ruff to defeat the contract.
