5 takeaways from state of D-428 teacher talks

Things are starting to get serious in the contract impasse between DeKalb School District 428 and its teachers union.

Although the two sides say that they’ve moved some since the “final offers” detailed online by the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board, it’s pretty clear they’re far apart.

Maybe they’ll get closer in negotiations set for 10 a.m. today.

Here are five takeaways from what we know about the state of things: 1. Teachers have a short workday. For most full-time working people, 6 hours and 45 minutes isn’t a full day’s work. While it might be true that teachers go home and work some more on some days, that’s a choice. Their workday is what the contract requires: 6 hours, 45 minutes for elementary and middle school teachers, 7 hours for high school.

2. DeKalb school officials are worried about the future. That makes sense considering that they’ve got a mountain of debt to refinance from the last round of school construction. We’ve detailed before how growth projections used to sell the community on borrowing $110 million in 2008 haven’t materialized, and as a result, property owners could see steep increases in their property taxes starting in 2017.

It looks as if the administration wants teachers to make some of the sacrifice that the community’s taxpayers will be called upon to make; the union isn’t keen on that.

3. District administration is targeting some sacred cows. They want to abandon the pay scale that guarantees raises each year based on seniority, scale back health insurance subsidies for teachers and end the off-pay-scale, 6 percent pre-retirement raises that teachers receive in their final four years in order to boost their pension payouts.

District officials are offering only raises tied to the consumer price index. They also don’t want to negotiate on issues such as class size.

4. Past choices make it harder to cry “poor.” District 428 has spent more than half of a $21 million grant it received in 2010. Administrators also have gone ahead

with a one-to-one technology program that will provide computers for all students at a cost of $8.5 million over five years. By comparison, the district said the teachers’ latest contract proposal would cost $5.2 million over three years.

Maybe it’s a coincidence that when you divide those numbers, they both come out to about $1.7 million more a year. But I’ll bet you this point has been made during negotiations.

5. The school year should start on time.

State law states that no work stoppage can begin until both sides’ “final offers” have been posted for 14 days by the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board. The board posted them Aug. 9, which should put the first day for a strike on Aug. 23 – the day before students are to start school.

A strike at the earliest possible date is unlikely, however. If nothing else, it would look bad. Usually it’s better to wait at least a week or two, if not longer, then walk. At least that way, teachers can tell the public, “We’ve been patient.”

The union gets more value from the threat of a strike and the leverage it provides than they do from the division and damage that can occur in a walkout.

Take the teachers strike in DeKalb in spring 1985 as an example. Teachers seeking a 4 percent raise for the school year walked out April 16 and did not return until two weeks later. In the end, they got a 2.5 percent raise, lost several days pay, and after two weeks’ lost class time, students had two extra school days added to the year, according to Daily Chronicle reports from the time.

Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that this year.

Sycamore hosts 60th annual Steam Power Show and Threshing Bee

news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – People from all over the Midwest can take a step back to the early 1900s at the Northern Illinois Steam Power Club’s 60th Steam Power Show and Threshing Bee, which runs through Sunday.

The annual tradition, which is held for four days the second weekend every August by the Northern Illinois Steam Power Club, features steam engines, tractors and other equipment that was used by farmers generations ago.

The show typically draws a crowd each year, that comes to the showgrounds on the Taylor Marshall Farm, near the intersection of Plank and Lukens roads to marvel at 18 full-size steam engines, 300 tractors and about 150 hit-or-miss gas engines.

The showgrounds also feature an antique display, flea market, scale railroad, bake sale and plenty of food vendors. Visitors can check out the parade of steam engines, gas tractors and other antique machines every day.

Nick Atkinson of Sycamore was displaying a 1916 Frick that was made in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. He said he’s been coming to the show since he was a young boy and loves to show off the unique engine.

“You don’t often see this in the Midwest,” he said. “It’s a twin-cylinder, and this is the only one like it here. It’s fun to see how things worked back in the old days. It’s a part of our history.”

Samantha Shepard, 25, said she has been coming to the bee since she was born. Visiting the show has been a family tradition for decades, she said.

“This is a generational thing,” Shepard said. “We all come, hang out, peruse the flea market and eat good food. We always have a great time.”

Harry Klimek III of St. Charles has been coming to the show for almost 20 years. He said he likes to look at the antique machinery, while his wife and daughter enjoy the flea market.

“All this stuff has an interesting, almost artistic, design,” Klimek said.

“There’s a lot of uniqueness. It’s a part of American history.”

His son, Harry Klimek IV, 19, said he likes the old engines and learning about their history.

“I absolutely always have fun,” he said. “It’s important to see this stuff and see how it was made. You can see how dangerous farming once was.

Sparky Holze of Hampshire was showing his 1970 International 656 tractor.

He said he grew up on tractors, and although this is only the second time he brought his machine, he’s been coming to the show for many years.

“It’s important for youth to see how we used to farm,” Holze said. “This is educational for them, because it’s how America was built: on farming and hard labor.”

This was the first visit to the steam show for Tim Clark of Lisle. He said he was blown away by all the equipment, especially the steam engines.

“The technology back then was amazing,” he said. “It was genius, just what they had to work with and what they created. My grandson loves trains and I wanted to bring him. We’re having fun and will be back.”

Farming equipment isn’t all that’s on display at the show.

Ken Slade of Malta was demonstrating a gas-powered Maytag washing machine from 1935. He said people always have an interest in it.

“I always hear stories from people about how they remember their grandma had one when they were kids,” he said. “This was the single-biggest reason for womens’ liberation. If they had a lot of kids and just a washboard and pail they spent a lot of time washing clothes. This freed up their time.”

Chuck Malsch, president of the Northern Illinois Steam Power Club, said the show is important because it educates people on how farming was done in the past. He said people keep coming back in part because it brings back memories.

“A lot of people come because their grandpa brought them, and it’s just a tradition that’s carried down for gen-

“A lot of people enjoy this every year.”

Jack Duchaj, the club’s treasurer, attended the first show in 1957. He was raised on a farm and said the event brings back memories of his childhood.

“We’re all good friends, and we work well together, ” he said. “There’s a fantastic, dedicated group of people who work hard all year to put this on.”

Kinzinger visits VAC after agency misses out on federal grant again

rgillespie@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, learned on Thursday’s tour of the Voluntary Action Center that the agency is doing more with less, and could have to keep that practice going since the nonprofit wasn’t awarded a coveted federal transportation grant.

VAC applied this year for the highly competitive Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery grant, administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The money funds capital projects, and VAC asked for $18 million to build the DeKalb County Multimodal Transportation Facility.

“Ultimately, it comes down to the amount of resources and the amount of grants available,” said Kinzinger, whose 16th District includes DeKalb and parts of 13 other Illinois counties. “What it comes down to is, we’ve

got to look long-term at the budget issues in this country and figure out how to fix them.”

The proposed 83,500-square-foot facility was to be built along Barber Green Road near Peace Road in DeKalb, and provide room to store and maintain VAC’s bus fleet and create more office space.

The Daily Chronicle spoke with the three-term congressman, who is running unopposed for re-election in November, after he toured the VAC facility where officials explained the need for a new, bigger transportation hub.

Ellen Rogers, VAC executive director, led Kinzinger through the agency’s cramped quarters where staff are squeezed into work spaces to do jobs that affect thousands of DeKalb County residents.

“We’re obviously disappointed,” she said about the TIGER grant. “We need something new. We’re dealing with some major maintenance [is-

sues].”

She has turned her hopes to a $15 million state grant application that still is pending.

Still, Rogers and Pam Blickem, who is on the VAC board and was present for the tour, continue to praise the local community for supporting the nonprofit.

“We have great community partners,” Blickem said.

Rogers pointed out that most of the grants VAC applies for, including the TIGER, require some local support.

“We happen to surpass it [the minimum requirements] far more than a lot of other areas,” Rogers said. “We don’t simply rely on the government for our funding because that would be unrealistic.”

Kinzinger said he doubts that the state’s fiscal mess had any bearing on VAC not getting the TIGER funding. But he said he isn’t 100 percent sure about that.

Illinois went all of fiscal 2016 without a state budget, and has only a stopgap appropriation plan in place for the current fiscal year.

In fact, when the city of DeKalb submitted the TIGER application on behalf of VAC, the state was in the throes of an impasse that saw nonprofit organizations – especially social service ones – bear the brunt of it.

“It was a disappointing year, frankly, for Illinois – outside of Chicago. We’re going to look into what’s going on and why that’s the case and see what we can do next time,” Kinzinger said.

But the congressman pointed out that there is no shortage of projects, nationwide, seeking financial backing.

“There is federal funding. There is federal support,” he said. “The problem is the needs grow, and the federal support is not necessarily growing with it.”

JAMES LEE ELLIOTT Born: Jan. 1, 1935 Died: Aug. 10, 2016

James Lee Elliott, age 81, graduated to Heaven on August 10, 2016, surrounded by his loving wife and family. Being a man of great faith and love for his Lord he is now experiencing eternity with his Saviour.

His journey through life began in a small town where his father was the manager of Lindewwod Coop Elevator and later farmed and also had owned an insurance agency.

Jim was born Jan. 1, 1935, to Arthur and Daisy Elliott in the town of Lindenwood, IL. Jim had two siblings, Gordon Elliott and Bob Elliott. He married his wife, Roxie on April 15, 1978.

Jim worked on the DeKalb police force and served as Northern Illinois security director during the 1970s and 1980s. He pastored Harvest Time Fellowship for many years before handing it over to his stepson, Pastor Michael Schumaker. He was loved by all at his church and served faithfully with all of his heart until he retired.

He is survived by his wife, Roxie Elliott; his children, Craig (wife Joyce) of DeKalb, Valerie Warber (husband Yogi) of Charleston, SC, and Rodney of Branson, MO; his stepchildren, Cindy (husband Brandon) Solomon of Portland, OR, Michael Schumaker of Sycamore, IL, and Rob (wife Robyn) Schumaker of Sycamore. Jim is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom he loved and adored.

Jim served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He loved to travel, especially the times he would vacation with his wife in Florida. Jim loved the dogs he had through the years and had a great love of opera. His greatest love was to serve as pastor of his church and to care for his wife. He also enjoyed taking his sons on fishing trips to Wisconsin.

He was a man of great integrity and honor and served at all he did with all of his heart and strength. He will be deeply missed for all that he gave.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m.

Sunday, Aug. 14, 2016, at Harvest Time Fellowship located at 203 S. Sacramento St, in Sycamore.

In Lieu of flowers, a memorial donation can be made in Jim’s honor to Harvest Time Fellowship.

Born: July 22, 1932; in DeKalb, IL Died: Aug. 10, 2016; in DeKalb, IL

Mildred “Millie” Sulaver, 84, of DeKalb, IL, died Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2016, at Oakcrest DeKalb Area Retirement Center.

She was born July 22, 1932, in DeKalb, the daughter of Mitar and Marie (Brunnhuber) Sulaver.

Mildred was employed by the DeKalb Ag for 47 years and 90 days. She was a member of the Kishwaukee Community Hospital Auxiliary, Barb City Manor Auxiliary, Friends of DeKalb Public Library, DeKalb County Farm Bureau Prime Timers, and a Hospice volunteer. Mildred was an avid Cubs, Bears, Bulls and Blackhawks fan. She bowled in leagues until she was 82 years of age.

Former Kingston village president heads to trial

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Kingston’s former village president is set to go before a jury next week on felony and misdemeanor charges related to misuse of a village credit card.

John Munro, 50, was charged in October 2014 with unlawful possession of a credit card, theft and official misconduct. He was also charged with misdemeanor theft. He is accused of using a village credit card dozens of times to pay for about $4,000 worth of gasoline for his personal use, according to court records and his attorney, Clay Campbell.

If convicted of official misconduct, a Class 3 felony, he could be sentenced to two to five years in prison.

Munro served on the Kingston Village Board for four years and was village president for 12 years. He resigned from that elected position in December 2014.

At a hearing Thursday, Munro told Judge Robbin Stuckert that he had rejected an offer from prosecutors that would have allowed him to avoid a criminal conviction if he successfully completed his sentence. Terms of what that sentence might have entailed weren’t discussed at Thursday’s hearing. Assistant State’s Attorney Howard Oestry said the offer had

been withdrawn because the case was going to trial.

Munro has maintained his innocence since his arrest. Campbell said that he planned to call several witness at trial who would testify that Munro was in Jamaica when some of the charges were made.

“The allegations here are that there’s dozens and dozens and dozens of separate occurrences, during which time the defendant allegedly used a gas card to take gas from the village,” Campbell said. “In combing through those, there was about a week’s time back in 2013 where Mr. Munro was in Jamaica at his son’s wedding.

“They are simply able to state – as Mr. Munro will state when he testifies – that during those particular transactions that he allegedly committed, it wouldn’t have been possible for him to have done it during that week as he was in Jamaica at the time.”

Earlier this month, Stuckert ruled that prosecutors couldn’t bring up any evidence at trial related to criminal allegations for which Munro was never charged. Specifically, the motion sought to bar evidence related to allegations that Munro took property and used property from the village without permission. Oestry didn’t object at the motion hearing.

Munro’s trial will begin Monday.

DeKalb to revive economic development committee

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The city is looking to restore the virtually defunct economic development committee, turning it into a citizen’s commission that would support efforts to spur more interest in DeKalb.

The existing five-member committee hasn’t met regularity since at least 2014, residents and city leaders acknowledged during Monday’s City Council meeting. The group is scheduled to meet every on the third Tuesday of every other month. But most meetings for at least the past two years had to be canceled because there were never enough members present for a quorum, city officials said.

This latest incarnation, however, would change from a committee to a commission and would have seven members instead of five, with each serving three-year terms. Aldermen gave a nod to establishing the new commission with a 7-0 vote Monday, on first reading.

“The main goal of the commission is to identify ways to help build the business community and, in turn, build the equalized assessed value of the city, helping with the tax burden for our residents,” said Ellen Divita, the city’s community development director. “We would look for a representation among the membership to represent all of the sectors of industry across this city.”

That includes agribusiness, banking, finance, education, industrial, medical, tourism and hospitality, and retail, she said. Arts and nonprofits would also be represented on the commission.

While aldermen readily agreed that the commission was needed, they held a lengthy debate on requirements for it. Residency was the major issue.

They agreed and voted that the head of the commission must be a DeKalb resident.

Some aldermen were OK with not making it mandatory that any of the other appointed commissioners live here. Others wanted most of members to be residents.

“While I understand there is some benefit and some value in having nonresidents be on the commission, I think that opens up the door to some pretty scary things,” 1st Ward Alderman David Jacobson said. “This is our opportunity to have residents give us some input.”

The alderman said he didn’t want to extend that to people who don’t live here.

Fourth Ward Alderman Bob Snow wasn’t a stickler about members being residents.

“I guess I understand why people think [commissioners] need to be residents. But I think it’s more important to get the right people on the committee,” he said. “We have a lot of people who have businesses in DeKalb, that are very active in DeKalb, but don’t live inside the city limits, for whatever reason.”

Fifth Ward Alderwoman Kate Noreiko pointed out the attendance issues with the existing committee and suggested residency requirements could affect the reconstituted commission.

“It seems to me that there’s been enough difficulty getting anyone to step forward and serve. And for us to restrict the membership seems like it would be complicating,” Noreiko said.

Aldermen ended up giving initial approval for a commission where the five members must be residents and there will be a City Council liaison appointed to the group, as well. The issue is expected to come up for a final vote at the Aug. 22 meeting.

Pastors sue over gay conversion therapy ban

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – A group of pastors is suing Illinois over a law that bars therapists and counselors from trying to change a minor’s sexual orientation, saying in a Thursday filing that the prohibition violates free speech and religious rights.

The federal lawsuit seeks to exclude clergy from the ban that took effect Jan. 1, arguing that homosexuality is “contrary to God’s purpose” and a disorder that “can be resisted or overcome by those who seek to be faithful to God and His Word.”

Illinois is among five states with bans on so-called gay conversion therapy for youth younger than 18, a practice critics have decried as psychologi-

cally damaging. The laws in California and New Jersey have withstood legal challenges, but an attorney for the pastors said the prohibitions in those states did not include clergy.

“The law in Illinois is broader than the other laws, which were aimed at licensed counselors,” said John Mauck, who added that his plaintiffs are not seeking to overturn the entire ban, but want a ruling stating it shouldn’t apply to clergy.

Vermont and Oregon are the other states with bans, and President Barack Obama expressed support for such laws last year.

The Illinois Attorney General’s office, which will handle the lawsuit on behalf of the state, had not received the lawsuit yet and couldn’t comment, spokeswoman Annie Thompson said.

Illinois’ law applies to therapists and other licensed counselors, but the portion of the law that concerns pastors makes anyone liable for consumer fraud if they practice or advertise conversion therapy that portrays homosexuality as a mental disorder.

“We want to make sure that young people in particular have access to pastoral and Biblical-based counsel if they want it, and that pastors are able to provide Bible-based counseling without any fear of legal repercussions,” said Steven Stultz, a Chicago pastor who is part of the lawsuit. Four other pastors are also involved, as well as Pastors Protecting Youth and Civil Liberties for Urban Believers.

Feds: Two CEOs indicted for stealing $2.5M from N.Y. firm

ALBANY, N.Y. – Two executives of a firm that was hired to raise funds for a northern New York aircraft repair facility have pleaded not guilty to conspiring to steal $2.5 million from their client.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Albany said Eric Jergensen of Salt Lake City and 52-year-old Debashis Ghosh of Chicago entered the pleas in federal court Wednesday. The men are CEOs at Verdant Capital Group.

Authorities said the men had agreed to maintain $2.5 million in a bank account, but quickly spent the funds provided by a firm not identified by prosecutors.

Plattsburgh media outlets identify the company as the Laurentian Aerospace Corp.

Prosecutors said all of the money had been transferred out of the account within four months and used to pay Verdant’s expenses.

The attorney for the two men declined to comment.

Carbondale police said in a news release that the three men were arrested Sunday and Monday in Saline County, Kansas.

They are charged with conspiracy to commit capital murder and booked into the Saline County jail on $1 million bond.

The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan reported a team led by Illinois State Police is continuing to investigate the July 31 shooting of officer Trey Harris, who was released from the hospital last week. The team is cooperating with investigators in Kansas. The Kansas investigation led to a sealed indictment associated with Harris’ shooting.

CHICAGO – A Muslim woman is suing the city of Chicago and six officers who falsely singled her out as a potential terrorist July 4, 2015, as she left a subway station wearing a headscarf, face veil and carrying a backpack.

Itemid Al-Matar’s federal lawsuit filed Thursday said officers pulled off her religious garb, arrested her and later strip-searched her. The 32-year-old was acquitted of obstructing justice.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations says “blatant xenophobia, Islamophobia and racial profiling” motivated the arrest.

A public police report said officers “were on high alert of terrorist activity” on the national holiday and that Al-Matar was exhibiting “suspicious behavior.”

The CPD declined to comment but said in a statement that police “strive to treat all individuals with the highest levels of dignity of respect.”

NEW YORK – A federal appeals court said Thursday that it wouldn’t be a bad idea to erase the criminal records of some people who’ve been successfully rehabilitated, and it recommended that Congress take a look at the possibility.

Still, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned a decision by a Brooklyn federal judge to do just that for a health care worker who lost jobs repeatedly after employers checked her criminal history and discovered a 1997 crime that led to a 2001 health care fraud conviction. She served five years of probation.

The three-judge Manhattan appeals court panel said the judge, John Gleeson, had no authority to wipe out her criminal record in May 2015 after she said the conviction was preventing her from getting or keeping a job as a home health aide.

Clinton knocks ‘outlandish Trumpian ideas’ in speech The ASSOCIATED PRESS WARREN, Mich.– Her political fortunes flourishing, Hillary Clinton attempted to undercut Donald Trump’s claim to working-class voters Thursday, portraying her Republican rival as untrustworthy on economic issues and pushing policies that would benefit only the super-wealthy – himself included.

The Democratic presidential nominee sought to seize momentum as Republicans – including Trump – struck an almost defeatist note about their Election Day chances.

As Republican leaders sounded alarms about Trump’s unconventional approach, Clinton attacked was she dubbed “outlandish Trumpian ideas” that have been rejected by both parties.

“Based on what we know from the Trump campaign, he wants America to work for him and his friends, at the expense of everyone else,” she said, at a manufacturing company.

Appearing in the county known for the so-called Reagan Democrats – working-class Democrats who voted Republican in the 1980s – Clinton tried to seize the opportunity to win back some of the blue-collar voters who’ve formed the base of her rival’s support, making the case that she offers a steadier roadmap for economic growth and prosperity.

“I can provide serious, steady leadership that can find common ground and build on it based on hard but respectful bargaining,” she said. “I just don’t think insults and bullying is how we’re going to get things done.”

Hoping to keep the pressure up on Trump, Clinton is also planning to release her 2015 tax returns in the coming days. Trump has said he won’t release them until an IRS audit is complete, breaking traditional with every presidential candidate in recent history.

A source close to Clinton said she soon would release the return, supplementing the decades of filings she and her husband already have made public. Her running mate, Sen. Tim Kaine and his wife also will release the last

10 years of their taxes. The source spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the plans in advance.

Her appearance followed Trump’s own speech on the economy, which he delivered in Michigan on Monday. But his scripted remarks were quickly eclipsed by the latest in a series of blunders and controversial statements that appear to have handed Clinton’s campaign a boost in the polls, particularly with Republican women and college-educated voters that make up a key piece of the GOP base.

Just hours before her address, Trump unleashed another round of attacks on Democrats, calling Obama the “founder” of the Islamic State militant group – and Clinton, its co-founder.

The Republican presidential nominee brushed off conservative radio commentator Hugh Hewitt’s attempt to reframe Trump’s observation as one that said Obama’s foreign policy created the conditions in Iraq and Syria that allowed IS to thrive.

“No, I meant he’s the founder of ISIS. I do,” Trump said, using another acronym for the extremist group that has wreaked havoc from the Middle East to European cities.

GOP: IS intel reports were manipulated

WASHINGTON – Intelligence assessments approved by senior leaders at U.S. Central Command exaggerated the progress of anti-terrorism efforts they ran against Islamic State militants, a House Republican task force said in an initial report released Thursday.

The report detailed what the task force described as “persistent problems” in 2014 and 2015 with the command’s analysis of U.S. efforts to train Iraqi forces and combat the extremist group in Iraq and Syria. Central Command, based in Tampa, Florida, runs the U.S. military operations in the Middle East.

The task force’s investigation isn’t yet complete. A separate investigation by the Pentagon inspector general also is underway.

The task force focused on the command’s intelligence directorate. The office underwent structural and management changes in mid-2014 that resulted in intelligence that was “consistently more opti-

mistic regarding the conduct of U.S. military action” than the judgments of many senior, career analysts at the command, according to the report.

The command’s intelligence on the Islamic State group also was “more optimistic” than that of other U.S. intelligence agencies and what actual events warranted, the task

force said. “Additionally, many (Central Command) press releases, public statements and congressional testimonies were also significantly more positive than actual events,” according to the report.

House Republican leaders formed the task force after lawmakers learned that an unnamed analyst assigned to the command had filed a formal complaint alleging that intelligence about the Islamic State group had been manipulated.

The Republican chairmen of the House Intelligence and Armed Services committees and the Appropriations defense subcommittee established the task force.

The report said leadership at the command and within its intelligence office “deteriorated significantly” after Marine Corps Gen. James Mattis departed as senior commander in 2013. Army Gen. Lloyd Austin replaced Mattis as the command’s top officer.

Roughly a year after Austin took over, several new senior

intelligence officials arrived in Tampa to replace holdovers from Mattis’ tenure. After the fall of Mosul, Iraq, to Islamic State militants in June 2014, the new officials, who are not named in the report, increased their involvement in the review and editing of various intelligence products.

The officials “regularly performed line-in/line-out edits and wording changes which were perceived by analysts as more frequent than previous intelligence directorate leadership,” according to the task force.

Dissatisfaction with the new way of doing business is reflected in an internal survey of command analysts that described the leadership as toxic, according to the report. Forty percent of the analysts who responded to the survey, which was conducted by the office of the director of national intelligence, said they had experienced an attempt to distort or suppress intelligence in the past year, the report said.

As governor, Blago gave leniency the cold shoulder News coverage of Tuesday’s resentencing hearing of Rod Blagojevich certainly tugged at the emotions of those who both support and oppose leniency for the disgraced former Illinois governor.

In a Chicago courtroom, Blagojevich, white-haired, subdued and wearing prison garb, appeared via closed-circuit TV from the Colorado federal prison where he has been an inmate the past four years.

He looked quite different from the dark-haired, brash, nattily-attired Chicago politician who won Illinois gubernatorial elections in 2002 and 2006, only to be impeached and convicted by the Legislature in early 2009 for political corruption, and later tried and convicted on 18 federal corruption charges for attempting to “sell” or “trade” an appointment to President Barack Obama’s vacated Senate seat.

Five of those convictions eventually were tossed, thus prompting the new sentencing hearing on the 13 remaining counts.

Also tugging at the heartstrings were touching statements by Blagojevich’s wife and two daughters, ages 20 and 13, all of whom supported a reduction in his prison term from 14 years to five years, not to mention more than 100 letters from Blagojevich’s fellow prisoners who painted Blago as a model inmate.

U.S. District Judge James Zagel would have none of it.

Thirteen felony counts of political corruption still constitute a serious enough offense to warrant the continuation of Blagojevich’s 14-year sentence, Zagel ruled.

Unless Blagojevich mounts a successful appeal, he’s stuck in prison until at least 2024, taking into account an expected two-year sentence reduction for good behavior.

We’d be tempted to feel sorry for the former governor, except for the fact that while Blagojevich was in office, he seldom felt sorry for the hundreds of Illinois inmates and ex-offenders who sought leniency from him.

At least, not sorry enough to act on hundreds of petitions for clemency that he basically ignored during his six years in office.

When Blagojevich took office in January 2003, 10 clemency requests awaited his consideration.

When he was booted from office in January 2009, the backlog had grown to more than 2,800. Those documents represented more than 2,800 people who sought pardons, paroles and commutations of sentences.

Their applications had been reviewed by the state’s Prisoner Review Board, whose members made recommendations and forwarded the petitions to Blagojevich’s desk.

And there they sat.

It’s the governor’s responsibility to act on petitions for clemency.

For whatever reason, Blagojevich irresponsibly let that part of the job slide.

He could have chosen to take the time and effort to plow through all those clemency requests and render decisions on them. His successor, Pat Quinn, acted on more than 4,900 clemency requests during his six-year term – so it can be done.

But Blagojevich apparently had other, more important items on his agenda – such as “selling” a Senate seat, perhaps?

When Rod Blagojevich’s plea for leniency fell upon deaf ears, some might said it was a case of poetic justice.

They would be correct.

What goes around, comes around.

Sanders sells out his revolution

To the Editor: I didn’t agree with his ideas about this country, but candidate Bernie Sanders helped to wake up a generation of potential voters.

But now, I have to ask, what was the point of him running?

It was confirmed, not alleged, but confirmed that the DNC undermined his candidacy to ensure that Hillary Clinton would win. It is that type of “establishment” that Sanders himself was aligning himself to fight against. Now? He has stepped in line, completely abandoning the countless followers and supporters that he had, and now wants Hillary Clinton to win.

That isn’t a “revolution,” Mr. Sanders, that is called a “sellout.”

Also, you’ve got to love the fact that the head of the DNC resigns because of confirmed rigging of the Democratic nominee and shortly after resigning she receives a job to help the Clinton campaign. Amazing.

To the Editor: Just heard on the news that health insurance coverage next year will increase 25 percent to 45 percent because companies are losing money.

Not sure how they can be losing when being subsidized by the government and no one is going to them because you can’t afford to go. At this moment, you can afford the policy, but not the care.

You have a deductible of $5,000 to $10,000 per person, and then no one goes to the doctor. Also interesting you have to have the health coverage or get fined, but the ones that make the rules don’t have to have coverage.

Trump speaks, children listen Earlier this summer, I was walking through the Miami airport with my 8-year-old grandson when I looked around and noticed I suddenly wasn’t.

I whipped around and spotted him standing a few feet away, his eyes glued to the cable show blasting on a monitor overhead. Twice I called his name.

Twice he didn’t hear me.

I walked over and looked up to see a familiar CNN clip of Donald Trump’s interview with Jake Tapper. Trump was ranting against U.S. District Court Judge Gonzalo P. Curiel, who was born and raised in Indiana.

“Now, this judge is of Mexican heritage,” Trump said. “I’m building a wall, OK? I’m building a wall. I am going to do very well with the Hispanics, the Mexicans. ... Look, he’s proud of his heritage.

I’m building a wall. ... I think I’m going to do very well with Hispanics, but we’re building a wall. He’s a Mexican. We’re building a wall between here and Mexico.”

I placed my hand on my grandson’s shoulder to urge him along. He resisted.

“Why is he saying that?” he said, his face furrowed with worry.

My grandson is one-fourth Latino – his maternal grandfather is Puerto Rican – and he lives in a community where most of the people are black.

Many in his town speak one language at home, and English when they are with people like him. These people are his neighbors and classmates. Many of them are his friends.

Until we walked through that airport, my grandson had not heard much from Donald Trump. His parents limit his TV viewing, which had insulated him from the hateful rhetoric of Trump’s campaign.

As we walked to our gate I acknowledged that it was upsetting to hear such language from a presidential candidate.

He was full of questions we all should be asking: Why did people vote for him?

Do people clap when he says those things?

What happens if he becomes president?

What happens to his friends, he means.

I think of that discussion with my grandson a lot these days because of the increasingly incendiary rhetoric coming out of Donald Trump’s mouth. I worry for children like him who are old enough to recognize hateful language, but too young to know what to make of

Many children have adults in their lives who know to intervene and explain why hate, at any age, against innocent people is wrong. What about all those children who do not have those adults to guide them?

We know from history that our worst impulses can catch fire when a prominent person chooses to ignite them. This is as true for adults as it is children. If you are an American claiming to be a Christian and yet looking for permission to hate all Muslims and immigrants, mock women and terrorize people of color, Donald Trump is your sign from God. As of this week, add violence against the president to Trump’s list of permissions granted.

Speaking at a rally in Wilmington, North Carolina, Trump said, about Hillary Clinton, “If she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks.” After some in the crowd booed, Trump added, “Although the Second Amendment people – maybe there is, I don’t know.”

After the election is over. After the voting is done. What else could he mean except to suggest that gun zealots could turn to violence?

The Trump campaign and his dwindling number of supporters tried to cast the outrage as a deliberate attempt to misinterpret the candidate.

Sen. Chris Murphy would have none of that. He represents Connecticut, where 20 children and six adults were slaughtered in Newtown.

“Don’t treat this as a political misstep,” he said via Twitter. “It’s an assassination threat, seriously upping the possibility of a national tragedy & crisis.”

How many children are seeing that clip of Trump urging gun owners to take the law into their own hands? How many of them are wondering what the consequences might be?

The better question, perhaps: How do we talk our children out of the same fear gnawing at our own grown-up hearts?

Thaw between Turkey, Russia causes concern The European Union and NATO face a significant challenge from the unfolding diplomatic rapprochement between Russia and Turkey.

For centuries, these two countries were implacable enemies and efforts a decade ago to forge a strategic partnership were undone by the Syrian civil war.

While Moscow propped up Bashar al-Assad, Ankara either stayed out or supported his enemies. Relations hit a low point in November when Turkish jets shot down a Russian Su-24 bomber near the Syrian border for violating Turkey’s airspace. Russia imposed sanctions and a freeze descended once more.

But even before the attempted military take-over last month, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had decided he could no longer afford a cold war with Moscow and began making overtures to the Kremlin.

The failed coup appears to have expedited matters: yesterday Erdogan met with Vladimir Putin to agree to normalize relations between the two countries.

For Putin, the opportunity to drive a wedge between Turkey, NATO and the EU is a small price to pay for abating Russian anger over the jet incident. He must recognize in Erdogan a leader cut from the same cloth – a democratically elected nationalist behaving more

like a despot.

The Turkish leader’s purge of opponents after the thwarted putsch has alarmed EU leaders who had encouraged Ankara to believe it could join the Union at some point in the future and had promised to introduce visa-free access for Turkish travellers to the Schengen area.

But no date has been given for either and several EU countries have made clear they would veto Turkey’s accession.

Europe has been desperate to keep both options open in order to stop Turkey reneging on a deal to keep Syrian refugees from crossing into Europe.

But Erdogan seems to be cooling toward Europe, none of whose leaders have been to Ankara since the failed coup, and is seeking alliances elsewhere.

The implications of an improving relationship between Russia and Turkey are significant both for policy on Syria and for NATO itself.

The U.S. nuclear base at Incirlik is a key part of western defenses; were Turkey to leave the organization, its loss would be a serious blow. Perhaps a weakened Erdogan needs a thaw with Russia more than Putin needs him.

But the Russian leader has grabbed at the chance to cause fresh consternation in the capitals of Europe and in Washington.

Women of the Word in Waterman is getting ready to kick off its 18th year of interdenominational Bible study.

This year will begin with a study on “The Armor of God,” by video teacher Priscilla Shirer.

Participants will develop an action plan for putting on a “spiritual ar-

mor” to secure victory in life.

It will be followed up by “The War Room” movie and the DVD study about the powerful weapon of prayer.

WOW offers classes for interested women from 9 to 11:30 a.m. or 6:45 to 9 p.m. Thursdays.

The year will begin with a Growing in Godliness Kick-off event for all interested men and women at 7 p.m.

“We’ve been fortunate enough to bring in some good competition,” said reigning MAC Coach of the Year Ray Gooden, who said his goal in scheduling is to get a strong RPI. “It’s nice to play against teams from every league, but it’s really nice to play from somebody from the Big Ten or the big conferences. It’s good for a team like Iowa to be willing to do that, because not every school is willing to.”

Adrian Myers is in his second year as the head coach of the women’s cross country team. The Huskies don’t have their first meet until Sept. 2 at the Illini Challenge in Champaign, but Myers said he’s hoping that having the Olympics going on right now – along with the success from track season – will help boost his runners.

“I hope to piggy-back on the Olympics – specifically the track part – but also piggy-back on the success we had in the spring with the track and field program finishing third, the highest the program has ever finished and returning most of the roster,” Myers said. “That’s something we’re excited about moving the program forward.”

Duffy (9-1) limited the Sox to seven singles, struck out six and walked none.

DeKALB – For the fall athletic programs at Northern Illinois, the start of the season is fast approaching.

For the women’s soccer team, the Huskies already have one exhibition under its belt. The start of the regular season for the volleyball, women’s cross country and men’s and women’s soccer teams is less than a month away.

“I really couldn’t tell you what day it is now,” women’s soccer coach John Ross joked at the Huskies’ media day Thursday. “Probably can’t tell you what day it is for the next three months. It’s always the same thing – we’re getting after it and putting in a lot of work.”

The women’s soccer team, which finished 3-12-3 last year, opened exhibition play with a 3-1 loss to Drake on Wednesday – getting back into town at 4 a.m. Thursday.

The men’s soccer team, which was 7-7-1 in 2015, gets its exhibition play going at 5 p.m. today at home against Olivet Nazarene. “[Today] is honestly like another practice,” men’s coach Eric Luzzi said. “In my head, I’m not even keeping score. I’m telling the guys that no matter what the score is, the mentality has to be that it’s 0-0. We’re just starting to implement some of the things that we did the first two days.”

RIO DE JANEIRO – Michael Phelps waggled four fingers, recognizing another historic achievement.

Now, he’s the first swimmer to win the same event at four straight Olympics.

Ryan Lochte was left in his wake every time.

In what was billed as the final showdown between two of America’s greatest swimmers, Phelps blew away Lochte – and everyone else – to win his fourth gold medal of the Rio Olympics and 22nd overall with a victory in the 200-meter individual medley Thursday night.

Phelps finished a full body-length

ahead of the field on the breaststroke and freestyle legs, finishing in 1 minute, 54.66 seconds.

A 12-time Olympic medalist, Lochte didn’t even make it to the podium this time, after taking two silvers and a bronze behind Phelps at the past three Olympics in this event.

Leading at the midway point, Lochte faded to fifth – nearly 3 seconds behind the winner.

Japan’s Kosuke Hagino took the silver, while China’s Wang Shun claimed the bronze.

But Phelps was in a league of his own.

As usual.

He’s got one more individual event at what he insists will really be his final Olympics – remember, he already retired once – and will be looking to add a fourth straight gold in the 100 butterfly to his staggering resumé.

Then, he’ll close out these Olympics in the 4x100 medley relay.

There seems little doubt he’ll go 6 for 6.

Led by Phelps, it was quite a night for the powerful American team, which picked up two more golds when Ryan Murphy completed a sweep of the men’s backstroke events in the 200 and Simone Manuel tied 16-year-old Canadian Penny Oleksiak for the top spot in the 100 freestyle, stunning world-record holder Cate Campbell of Australia.

With the win, Manuel became the first black woman to capture gold in swimming.

Her fingernails painted red, white and blue, Manuel broke down in tears when she recognized her historic achievement in a sport that still struggles to attract people of color.

Campbell and her younger sister, Bronte, were hoping to battle for gold after teaming up to lead Australia to a victory in the 4x100 free relay.

Neither one made the podium by themselves. Cate was under her own world-record pace at the turn, but had nothing coming back and fell all the way to sixth. Bronte was second at the turn and slid to fourth at the finish.

“It made me not think about things too much and made me more confident,” Raisman said. “I knew going into tonight I was going to get the silver medal because I was going to hit four events.”

That’s because gold has been out of reach for everyone but Biles for three years and counting. She arrived in Brazil with 15 world championship medals – 10 of them gold – with routines astonishing in their mix of ambition and precision.

One last test awaited in Rio, a contest not so much between Biles and the rest of the field but between herself and the outsized expectations her dominance has created.

Anything less than heading back to her family’s home in Spring, Texas, with a fistful of golds would be seen as a disappointment. Biles earned the first one Tuesday while serving as the exclamation point to retiring national team coordinator Martha Karolyi’s going away party.

Although Biles insisted she’s never looked ahead during her long run at the top, that’s not exactly true.

A portion of her floor exercise routine – the one that includes her signature tumbling pass – is set to Brazilian music that would fit right at home in the street right outside Olympic Park.

It’s not a coincidence.

The girl adopted along with her younger sister by their grandparents as toddlers and discovered by coach Aimee Boorman’s mother during a field trip to the gym is a wonder, even if it always didn’t seem that way.

Biles’ talent is unmistakable, but it took time to harness. At one point Boorman pulled Biles aside and gave her a choice. Biles could continue to work out 20 hours a week, attend high school and eventually become a college gymnast or she could explore the elite level, a move that included more intensive training and being home schooled.

Boorman asked more than once.

And every time the answer came back the same: let’s go for it.

“I wanted to see how far I could go in this sport,” she said.

A decision that led to years of sacrifices and, ultimately, the biggest night of her life.

Five trips to the top of the podium in one games is something gymnastics has never seen.

Then again, doing things gymnastics has never seen is what Biles does best.

Osea Kolinisau and his rugby sevens teammates can call themselves Fiji’s first Olympic champions, capping their domination the past two years with an emphatic 43-7 win over Britain in the gold-medal match.

Both teams were unbeaten going into the final, but only one has rugby sevens as a national sport. It was all but over at halftime, with the Fijians scoring five tries before the break to 29-0.

Kolinisau scored the first of those, reaching back over his head to touch down. Rugby is back in the Olympics for the first time since a 15-a-side tournament was played in 1924.

World Anti-Doping Agency says it’s a target of hackers

The World Anti-Doping Agency and Court of Arbitration for Sport said it has been targeted by hackers.

WADA communications coordinator Maggie Durand told The Associated Press in an email that the agency was notified of a YouTube video claiming WADA’s website had been hacked.

She said an investigation “was quickly able to determine that the website had not been compromised, although we continue to monitor activity.”

She said WADA can confirm that its data base of doping results “has not been compromised.” Meanwhile, CAS secretary general Matthieu Reeb told the AP “there has been an attempt to hack the CAS website. It is not the first time, and certainly not the last time.”

Biles soared to the all-around title Thursday night, putting the gap between herself and everyone else on full display for the world to see. Her total of 62.198 was well clear of Raisman, who finished her remarkable comeback with a silver medal, and Russia’s Aliya Mustafina.

“It doesn’t even feel real,” Biles said. “To me I’m just the same Simone. ... But I feel the same. I just feel like I did my job tonight.”

One that she does better than anyone else.

Biles became the fourth straight American woman to capture the allaround and fifth overall. She and Raisman joined Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson in 2008 as the only U.S. gymnasts to win gold and silver in the same Olympic final.

“I told her before today, ‘I want you to win and I want second,’ ” Raisman said.

Bears vs. Broncos: What we learned

CHICAGO – The Bears’ starting defense gave up a touchdown on its opening drive, and the offense got only one first down on three drives, culminating in a shaky start to the preseason.

Here are the four things we learned from Thursday night’s preseason opener against the Denver Broncos: 1. Alshon Jeffery is back: The best news the Bears received, and the most important, was getting their top receiver on the field. A hamstring injury kept Jeffery out of a few practices and limited in the final two sessions in Bourbonnais, but he was healthy and on the field for the first three drives, catching the one pass thrown his Alshon Jeffery way, a 12-yard gain on the Bears’ first play on offense.

It’s a good sign that the hamstring strain wasn’t something the team felt would become worse from Jeffery playing in the preseason opener.

Neither Jeffery nor the Bears can afford for him to have lingering injuries again.

2. The offense needs work: Yes, tight end Zach Miller and receiver Eddie Royal remained out with concussions, but that’s not enough of an excuse for the first-team offense to manage 13 net yards. Quarterback Jay Cutler was sacked twice and running back Jeremy Langford averaged 1.8 yards on his four carries. This came against a Broncos defense that was without its four best players: linebacker DeMarcus Ware and Von Miller and corner backs Aqib Talib and Chris Harris Jr. With a new play-caller, three new offensvie linemen and new starters at several skill positions, it’s going to take time, but this was not a good debut. The second team didn’t fare much better, with QB Brian Hoyer getting sacked three times in the second quarter.

3. Mixed bag for starting ‘D’: The firstteam defense was without defensive back Tracy Porter and linebacker Pernell McPhee and gave up a touchdown on a 10-play, 76-yard drive to open the game. Broncos receiver Demaryius Thomas caught a 32-yard touchdown on third-and-9 when the Bears blitzed and cornerback Bryce Callahan got turned around.

Callahan made a nice play on the next drive, however, coming off his man to deflect a pass that linebacker Jerrell Freeman intercepted.

Linebacker Willie Young was active and had a QB hit and Freeman had a tackle for loss.

4. Veterans-laden special teams units: General manager Ryan Pace made a concerted effort to bring back players who were core special teamers last season, and they all were active with the kicking units.

Rookies Deiondre’ Hall and Deon Bush, and fullback Paul Lasike were the only players not on last year’s active roster to get reps with the starting kicking return and coverage units.

It’s early, however, and it eventually will become a numbers and money game to fill the roster, so more and more rookies might start getting chances in the third phase.

Bears come up empty It’s only preseason opener, but O-line needs lots of work

CHICAGO – The most important thing to remember about the Bears’ exhibition opener Thursday night at Soldier Field against the defending Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos is that other than injuries, none of it really matters.

Fortunately, as far as we could tell, no one was seriously hurt.

That said, for as much time as these Bears have spent fighting and playing tough guys in Bourbonnais, it sure would have been nice if any of them had at least tried to throw a block at someone from Denver.

Through three quarters, while there were still a few guys on the field with a chance of making the team, the Bears were outgained, 297 yards to 79.

That’s right, 79 yards of total offense – 25 rushing and 54 passing – on 37 plays, 2.1 yards an offensive play, 1.4 yards a rush and 2.8 yards a pass, in an exhibition game for crying out loud.

“We’re restricting him some, like we would anybody, but he’s looked really good and we’re restricting him more of getting him back into rhythm than worrying about his injury,” he said of Thomas, who started 10 of the 11 games he played in 2015.

Last season, the Huskies allowed 4.0 yards a rush and 174.1 a game – compared with 243.6 passing yards a game. Lee said the defensive line has been working on the pass rush, saying they’re “pretty good at stopping the run,” and that the pass rush has been a weakness for the Huskies in the past.

The Huskies also have a pair of junior college transfers in Alton Meeks (Iowa Western) and Joe Sanders (Highland in Kansas). Meeks was with the Huskies in the spring, and Sanders recently joined the Huskies. Carey said he likes their effort and attitude and that they still have some catching up to do.

On Thursday, Carey highlighted true freshman Ben LeRoy from Wilmette Loyola Academy as somebody who could see some time on the field this season, and that former offensive lineman Nathan Veloz has handled the transition to the defensive line solidly.

“I think he has an opportunity to help us there, given his size and skill set and strength,” he said of the 6-foot4, 316-pound Veloz. “It was more opportunity for the young man than anything else.”

The Huskies do lose their starting defensive ends in Cameron Clinton-Earl and Perez Ford. While Ford provided a yelling-and-chest-pounding energy to the line, Lee said the defensive line as a group has come together with a strong bond.

“We don’t really have anybody in the room that’s like how Perez was,” Lee said with a laugh. “The guy loves to talk, but we’ve bonded a lot and we’ve been going to events together – going swimming, eating together, fellowship-type of things. We’ve really bonded together.

This is probably the closest the D-line has been in the past few years since I’ve been here. I think we’ll be pretty good.”

The University of South Florida football team’s trip to DeKalb originally planned for 2017 is getting kicked down the road a bit.

Northern Illinois athletic director Sean Frazier confirmed Thursday that the Huskies’ meeting against the Bulls at Huskie Stadium will be moved to 2025, as South Florida agreed to a homeand-home matchup with San Jose State in 2017 and 2018, which was reported

by ESPN. Sean Frazier The Huskies still will play Sept. 10 at South Florida.

Frazier said the move was mutually agreed upon by NIU, South Florida and San Jose State. The Huskies are slated to host Boston College and play at Nebraska and San Diego State in 2017, and Frazier said the empty slot hopefully will be filled with an in-state FCS school.

“Boston College, Nebraska and San Diego State? That’s a [heck] of a schedule,” Frazier said. “It’s good to have some balance (with an FCS school), because when it comes to the Group of 5, beating all those schools – that will get people’s attention.”

Frazier said there was no contract locked in for the South Florida game to be played in 2017 and said he likes to keep the scheduling as fluid as possibly, especially with the chance at getting a Power 5 school to play the Huskies.

As far as which FCS team would fill the empty void, Frazier did not give a specific team. The Huskies are hosting Western Illinois in the final nonconference game Sept. 24. In coach Rod Carey’s first full year as NIU’s head coach in 2013, the Huskies edged out a 4339 win over Eastern Illinois when the Panthers were led by Jimmy Garoppolo.

The Huskies last played Southern Illinois in 2007 (34-31 loss for the Huskies) and Illinois State in 2000 (52-0 win for the Huskies).

28 Teens need sleep for brain development Dear Dr. K: My teenage daughter stays up late, then has a hard time waking up for school. I don’t think she’s getting enough sleep. What can I do to help her fall asleep at a reasonable time?

Dear Reader: Not getting enough sleep can have serious consequences. This is especially true for children and adolescents, whose developing brains are very sensitive to insufficient sleep. Teens need as much sleep as do adults, maybe more.

They need eight to 10 hours for optimal function, but studies have found few get this much sleep.

Studies also find most teens tend to be “night owls”: They want to go to sleep late and get up late. But school doesn’t allow this. So they stay up later than they should, and get up before their inner clock would have them do so.

Teens also have a tendency to “crash” on the weekends, sleeping in late when they can. This adjusts their inner clock in a way that makes it harder for them to awaken on time Monday morning.

Because I’m not a pediatrician or a sleep expert, I sought advice from my colleague Dr. Dennis Rosen, associate medical director of the Center for Pediatric Sleep Disorders at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Rosen cited a recent study published in the journal Sleep. In the study, researchers compared two groups of high school students. During the week, half the kids were chosen at random to sleep nine hours a night and the other half only five hours a night. Not surprisingly, the sleep-deprived kids demonstrated impaired cognitive function, alertness and mood during their week of five-hour nights as compared with their peers. It also took them more than two nights of

One way of helping kids get the sleep they need is by eliminating things that tempt them into staying awake. The most common reasons are electronic devices in the bedroom: TVs, computers, tablets and smartphones. Using such devices before sleep not only reduces the amount of time the kids sleep, but also causes poorer quality sleep.

Another strategy to help your daughter fall asleep more easily is to remove stressors from her bedroom and encourage her to relax before bedtime. This means, for example, she should not do her homework in the bedroom (and never in bed). Have your daughter do her homework at the dining room table instead.

This creates a distinct boundary between the pressures of the day and the comforting space of the bedroom.

Likewise, encourage your daughter to end her day with 20 to 30 minutes of mindfulness practice, yoga or quiet reading. This can help your teen redirect herself to a different plane as she gets ready to sleep.

Ideally, your teen will stick to a regular sleep schedule, going to sleep and waking up at the same time seven days a week. But I don’t need a sleep expert to tell me that’s probably a pipe dream.

been divorced for a year and have two boys, ages 8 and 9. During this time, my ex-husband has introduced three different women to my children and recently introduced them to a new girlfriend he has been seeing for a few weeks. I do not find this appropriate. When I confronted my ex, he insisted there is no problem with it. West can see three defensive tricks: one spade and two hearts.

Where is trick four?

West must count the high-card points. Dummy has six, and West holds 13, leaving only 21 for South and East. Clearly, East doesn’t have a winner. Somehow, East-West must take two trump tricks. When the defenders have taken every possible side-suit trick, give a ruff-and-sluff. It cannot cost and might gain.

Here, West should cash his heart king, then play a third heart. Declarer will probably ruff on the board and play a trump to his king. West takes that trick and leads a fourth heart.

When East ruffs with his spade 10, it uppercuts South’s queen and promotes a trick for West’s jack.

If you can count only one thing, track the high-card points.
